HOTELS & SPAS

Brand image is the collective perception of a brand by consumers David Ogilvy

TT

he portfolios of most top designers and architects include projects for premium hotels and spas, where the goal is to find the perfect blend of comfort and aesthetics. When working on hotel and spa interiors, designers carefully consider every detail and strive to add bespoke touches to the space at hand. A recent trend in contemporary bathroom design is the selection of a single bold feature that sets the tone for the design as a whole. Leading global brands compete for the right to furnish the interiors of elite hotels and spas. Hansgrohe, Axor, Roca, Laufen, Bisazza and Duravit all offer collections and individual items to complement any luxury project. Sanitary ware and ceramics manufacturers can raise their profile by being featured in the interiors of world-class hotels, gaining a major boost for their brand. Contemporary design demands unconventional solutions. When searching for new ideas, designers often look to the past, when wood and paper wall coverings were widely used in bathroom interiors. Technological advances have allowed designers to replace impractical materials with new and improved versions: thanks to modern production and treatment technologies, wall coverings, accessories and bathroom fixtures made from wood have now acquired durability, damage resistance, and most importantly, water resistance, restoring them to their rightful place among other quality bathroom finishing materials. Their aesthetic value and broad potential for application within interior designs has given wallpaper and wood a ticket to the most prestigious bathroom design projects. Marcel Wanders, Frank Gehry, Laura Kirar and Raymond Morel assemble hotel and spa interiors like a mosaic, selecting choice items from various leading manufacturers. By earning a place in the interior design of a luxury hotel, accessories brands add "five stars" to their own brand image, thus demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between hotel brands and manufacturers of finishing materials, bathroom fixtures and accessories. & Bathroom

Digital technologies are transforming the world beyond recognition and finding application in every corner of our lives. Everyday bathroom fixtures are now being equipped with sensor panels and digital displays and taking on marvellous new forms. In this way, the relentless progress of high technology is constantly redefining the designs of the future.

6

1. This high-tech bathroom for technophiles comes with a phone, MP3 player, computer and television. All of these integrated gadgets are activated via touch screens and remote controls. The bathroom also fulfils all the usual functions and is equipped with hydromassage bathtub, shower unit and other ergonomic fixtures and accessories, right down to digital scales.

Designer Robin Levi for Ideal Standard

2. The Moxie wireless showerhead is Bluetooth enabled and allows you to listen to music or the news as you shower. The waterproof device with integrated speaker provides up to seven hours of uninterrupted sound and comes in a range of colours.

KOHLER

3. This mixer from Jado comes with a digital panel and chrome detail that complete its futuristic look. Water temperature and pressure are controlled using the sensor panel located on the unique E-vision screen. In addition, Jado's smart technologies remember personal user settings.

Jado

4. The essence of modern design and innovative technologies has been distilled into the SMA WASH digital mixer tap. This cutting-edge design features a hollow glass panel with an elongated opening that turns a stream into a waterfall. A sensor-activated soap dispenser is located below the panel, while a hand dryer is integrated into the underside. The sensor display is used to control water temperature and dispense soap.

Designer Su Jian Xiong

5. The VITEO designer shower works like a sprinkler. Jets of water arc up to four metres in the air, like a fountain, creating the effect of gentle summer rain. The device is activated by the weight of a human body – to take a shower, the user merely has to step onto the circular foot plate, which is 80 cm in diameter.

Designer Danny Venlet for VITEO OUTDOORS

The model possesses all the capabilities of a computer with internet access, including smartphones. The innovative device is voice-activated and saves individual settings, recognising each user by sight. The mirror is made with special glass used in computer electronics. In terms of flexibility, innovative glass panels can rival any wall covering.

Corning

7. With the ergonomic Quantum Tap, the amount of water to be dispensed is set in advance. The head is raised in increments to measure the amount, like a syringe. Turning the head left or right controls the water temperature.

Designers Dennis Kulage, Michael Scherger

8. US company Sloan was one of the first to apply solar energy to the design of sanitary ware and mixer taps. The Solis collection includes mixers with infrared sensors that are powered by solar panels located on the side of the product. The product generates power from both solar rays and artificial light from any type of bulb.

Sloan

9. This 2-in-1 mixer with integrated dryer removes the need for extra equipment and paper towels. When vertical, the device is activated with a single touch and functions as a tap, and when horizontal it becomes a powerful hand dryer.

Designer Jiwei Zhang

10. The Duo tap boasts a striking futuristic design as a half-ring that appears to float above the washbasin. The water inside the product flows in a circle and its two openings streamline the washing process, making this innovation especially relevant for public buildings. Water temperature is controlled by turning the rings on the tap body and is displayed via integrated blue and red LEDs.

Designer Berkan Taskin

8

11. The Slide Tap mixer takes full advantage of modern sensor technologies. The tap opens when the top panel moves, while the water temperature is set using the sensor display on top. The panel includes two touchpads to control water temperature and a screen which displays the result.

Designer Zeyu Zeng

12. Solar technology was used in the creation of this sensor-activated flushometer equipped with a solar panel. The model can automatically select the volume of water used for flushing based on the amount of time spent by the person in the bathroom. This total approach to bathroom fixture design from Sloan allows for considerable water conservation: water flowing into the basin passes through two filters and is directed to the toilet's tank for flushing.

Sloan

13. Le Penseur innovative WC with sunken seat provides a comfortable position for users of any age. The raised handles on the sides aid sitting and standing up, while the raised front forces the body to adopt the optimal squatting position. The numerous options are activated remotely via a touchscreen console. The device regulates temperature, water supply and even provides musical accompaniment. Le Penseur is particularly suitable for elderly people.

Designer Peter Codling

14. The concept of the SMART WATER control system marks the start of the era of digital bathing. This smart device from Dornbracht allows users to set the temperature, pressure and volume of water with a single button. SENSORY SKY shower technology imitates natural rain. Its water treatments are accompanied by fragrances, which help to fully recreate scenarios from nature. The system features three modes: RELEASE – a refreshing summer rainstorm with a subtle tropical fragrance; READJUST – light mist and warm rain accompanied by the scent of wild flowers; REJOICE – rain that sparkles with all the colours of the rainbow combined with an invigorating, sensual fragrance. Dornbracht showers are controlled with a single touch on the high-tech SMART TOOLS system.

INNOVATIVE CERAMICS: LIVING WITH TILES THAT TALK

When it comes to contemporary design, ceramic tiles take centre stage. Tile manufacturers continue to experiment and discover new capabilities of this versatile material, regularly offering innovative products that break with convention in both their design and functionality. 10

1. DAMASK GOLD The gold tile from Dune's (Spain) Damasco collection will make an indelible impression in any setting. These long, rectangular, gilded tiles are offered in over 1000 different designs with a gloss or matt finish, so you're sure to find something here to suit your dream interior. 2. PRECIOUS TILE The LuxTouch collection from Pietra Firma (UK) unites classic elegance and stylish design. Each element in the series masterfully weaves together intricate details in black marble tile encrusted with 95 brilliant cut diamonds and mother of pearl.

The centre of each of these luxury tiles is made from black agate with a mother of pearl inlay and mother of pearl petals radiating out from it. Each petal is studded with a large precious cut diamond. 3. BRIGHT IDEA Sometimes the best ideas are also the simplest. Designers from Graniti Fiandre (Italy) created the Light Shape collection, where tiles are illuminated through a cut-out shape in their surface. The collection will add an touch of individuality and a hint of magic to the surrounding space.

5 4. PATCHWORK TECH Industrial designer Shane Crozier (Australia) combined the traditions of patchwork quilts and home-made stained glass windows to create a tile equipped with OLEDs. During the day the tile appears completely ordinary, but at night it can be switched on and illuminate the room. The tile collection is composed of acrylic squares that can be easily removed from the frame and washed in warm water. The tile can be used in home interiors on both walls and windows. 5. TILE DARTBOARD THOUT UtiliTILE (Canada) presents Forked Up – a series of easyto-install varnished wall tiles, which serve as an unconventional storage space for cutlery. This

12

saves space and gives the interior a fresh, quirky look: the wall resembles a dartboard pierced with knives and forks. The product is made from maple laminate MDF and lacquer. The utensils are held in place by magnets. 6. SMART FLOOR TAU Ceramica (Spain) together with the inventor Pep Torres have developed a "diet" ceramic floor with an integrated weight sensor and microchip that monitors various parameters. This slimming aid can recognise specific individuals listed in its database and record their activities. The most interesting thing about this floor is that it can make various announcements based on specific diet goals. For

6 7

8

example, if the floor detects that you frequently stop in front of the refrigerator, you are sure to hear it shout, "Stop eating!" The CafĂŠ Time tile, on the other hand, can monitor coffee breaks in the workplace. 7. NORTHERN LIGHTS Designers from MOVING COLOR (USA) have developed the unusual Northern Lights glass tile that changes colour according to temperature. At room temperature the tile is black, but when exposed to a stream of warm water, the tile surface begins to gleam with all the colours of the rainbow.

9

10

8. PERSONALISED DESIGN ImageSnap (USA) can print any image on ceramic tile. The method is based on a scientific phenomenon called dye-sublimation. Personalised tiles from ImageSnap are available with a gloss or matt finish and can be installed as a decorative element on a wall or placed separately, even on the fridge (the tiles come with magnets on the back for this purpose). 9. TETRIS TILE The Tetris collection comes from the company Tetris Tiles (UK), whose designers decided to make tiled walls a little more interesting. The idea was inspired by one of the most popular video games ever and offers an alternative to conventional tile squares. Each pattern is made to order and the customer decides how to assemble the shapes and fill the space – just like playing Tetris. 10. CONCRETE WITH A SECRET Using the wondrous effect of invisible ink, designer Frederik Molenschot (Netherlands) together with Susanna Happle (Germany) created this concrete tile with a hidden design. Solid Poetry is a concrete tile with a unique floral design that only appears upon contact with water.

MODELS

The word "bathroom" itself indicates the main component of this essential space and a bathtub can easily serve as the central element of the room's interior design. The functions of the humble bathtub are becoming ever more complex as technical breakthroughs continue to be made and the cutting edge of bathtub design and fashion progresses to match. As a result, leading market brands are developing unconventional bathtubs with a focus on style, form and comfort.

1. The BATHSPHERE bathtub from designer Alexander Zhukovsky creates a space within a space. The little world of the BATHSPHERE consists of a glass orb, inside which users can experience imitation rain and control the temperature, moisture, light, sounds and smells. Adding to this otherworldly effect, the suspended glass bathtub evokes a feeling of weightlessness. 2. The Encore is a king-size bathtub made from acrylic that has been polished to a high gloss. The model comes with a chrome drain and outflow to prevent overflowing. 3. In the GreenLint shower, water streams from four directions simultaneously, with water pressure controlled by valves inside the shower enclosure. This indulgent experience is accompanied by soft lighting.

4. The Drop collection has been created by Benedini Associati for Agape Srl. The bathtub allows users to relax in whatever position is most comfortable and is even suitable for two. The product is manufactured using Cristalplant eco-friendly artificial stone. 5. This hanging bathtub made from carbon is designed by Splinter Works. The bathtub's foam core helps keep water warm for longer. The bathtub is 2.7 metres long and can be finished in a variety of colours.

6. The Thais model from Blu Bleu is a timeless design. The technologies and comfort it provides fully correspond to the physiology of the user, making it suitable for all ages. 7. The Kali' Color 170 Blu Bleu bathtub is equipped with the latest tech including digital control, ozone system and hydromassage functionality. Clad in resin-coated panels, the model is offered in 192 colours and five different finishes. 8. The defining feature of the Italian Glass Idromassaggio bathtub is invisible, like the bath itself. This unique design is made from completely transparent glass, leaving the bathtub hidden in plain sight. The Glass Idromassaggio is equipped with a post only on one side, while the second is wall-mounted. 9. This bathroom system from designer Arina Komarova combines a shower with hydromassage and whirlpool bathtub, but the most memorable thing about this conceptual piece is that it resembles a giant egg. It has a built-in lighting system for relaxation, which enhances the action of the hydrotherapy treatments.

16

10. The technique of blending – creating a product from seemingly incompatible elements – is now being applied to bathroom interiors. This bathtub makes use of LEDs to deliver a striking design and a softly-lit ambience. LEDs are safe to use in the bathroom as they are made entirely from non-conducting material. 11. The free-standing Amanpuri bathtub comes with built-in oak shelving. The tub itself is made from eco-friendly quartzite. 12. This high-tech bathtub is one of several designs from Karim Rashid. The TV Tub with built-in television was developed for Korean company Saturn. The streamlined bathtub is made from liquid acrylic resin, which not only provides durability and shine but also possesses antibacterial properties. 13. The Yuma-Art 190 oval bathtub from Blu Bleu comes finished in elegant teak or wenge wood panels. The finish allows the bathtub to be placed in the centre of the room, in a corner, or in an alcove.

THE IMPERIAL:

A STORY OF SINGULAR CERAMICS 18

Nestled in the centre of Europe, Prague became a popular tourist destination at the beginning of the 20th century. Not wanting to miss a business opportunity, entrepreneurs of the time strove to expand the fledgling travel industry. In 1914, Prague's fairytale image was further enhanced with the opening of the stunning Imperial Hotel. The project was led by investor Jan Kolář and Emil Sommerschuh, the director of several ceramics factories, who decided from the outset to use only the most durable materials for the hotel's construction, so as to "pass on to future generations a creation untouched by time and unfading in the vivacity of its colours."

g The unique charm of the Imperial's interior comes from the moulds created by sculptor Josef Drahoňský

19

20

The hotel interior is clad in Egyptian-style mosaic panels, while the columns and walls are decorated with ceramic reliefs based on Middle and Far Eastern motifs. All of the ceramic tiles used in the hotel are hand-painted. The ground-floor café is finished in a bespoke mosaic and tiles designed by Professor of Decorative Arts Jan Beneš. The ceramic finishing materials were manufactured in the royal Lichtenstein factory for ceramic goods in Rakovník – the future manufacturing base for Lasselsberger– which is evidenced by the factory's mark on one of the hotel's central reliefs.

g Even the hotel's staircases are covered in bespoke mosaic

The room interiors are decorated in elegant fabrics and furniture made from prized varieties of wood. The bathrooms in the hotel are finished in natural marble. In 2006-2007, under the expert supervision of a heritage body, Lasselsberger participated in the reconstruction of the ceramic interior, which is unique in Central Europe. The reconstruction process included the production of a whole host of replicas of original details, resealing joints, and the restoration of lost decor elements to their rightful places. This Prague landmark was fully restored to its original glory after two years of work. The hotel's unique combination of Art Deco and Cubism was once again on display for visitors, forming such an integral part of its new character that it became part of the hotel's name – Art Deco Imperial. Under this name, visitors in the 21st century and beyond will be able to enjoy this splendid masterpiece of decorative art and ceramics manufacturing.

CHAVANEL

in Paris

The Hotel Chavanel is located on a bustling street in La Madeleine quarter, the French capital's historic centre. After several months of construction work overseen by architects Anne Peyroux and Emmanuèle Thisy (Peyroux & Thisy), the building was completely transformed and reopened to the public. The renovation endowed the hotel with a much more elegant appearance, thanks in no small part to the choice of materials. A sophisticated selection of colours and materials creates a calm and comfortable ambience. The eclectic leitmotif draws its inspiration from quality fabrics and lacework, which is in evidence in each of the hotel's rooms. Sumptuous netting immerses guests in a world of refinement, while the contrasting elements highlight the creative approach taken to the overall design.

All of the furniture and decor pieces in the Hotel Chavanel are either exclusive or unique. Not a single detail has been overlooked. The hotel interior strikes the perfect balance between feminine and masculine qualities, easily captivating guests. The hotel boasts 25 rooms and 2 top-floor suites. Guests entering the hotel are greeted by the impressive reception desk designed by the architects specially for the Chavanel. It is made from Krion® — a "state-ofthe-art solid surface" from Systempool that defines the unique character and modern style of the lobby. A whole grove of tree trunks suffuses the space with light, creating a cosy yet wholly contemporary feel.

STYLE & LUXURY

The St Regis New York opened its doors in September 1904. It was the first hotel skyscraper in America and instantly stole the spotlight from other famous hotels around the globe. Exquisite interiors with elegant sculptures and mouldings, silk, marble, extremely rare tapestries, crystal candelabras and exclusive furniture – the decor of the Edwardian era made an indelible impression on New York's financial elite. The St Regis New York immediately became a unique private club where the great and the good were inclined to spend their time. To this day the hotel is one of the city's major sights, where guests can experience the sumptuous decor of the rooms and luxury interiors of the designer suites.

28

In 2013 HDC design bureau redesigned all of the hotel's interiors. Creating an aesthetic based on a "timeless is modern philosophy, HDC preserved the legacy of the original design while introducing modern accents. Luscious marble, richly coloured fabrics and leather details – all of this was made anew using modern technologies. The designers paid special attention to the decoration of the bathrooms, where modern refinement is combined with bold bespoke details. Famous for its progressive ideas in the realm of sanitary ware, Kohler presented several innovations from world-renowned designers for the hotel's bathrooms. Bill Sofield is rightly considered one of the brightest creative minds of our time. His inimitable style is born of mixing pop culture with traditional artistic elegance. Inspired by the classical architecture of the early 20th century, French interiors and haute couture, the designer created the Jeton collection to reflect the chic sensibility of the period. The Tuxedo collection from Barbara Barry – star of the interior design world, idol for designers across the globe and darling of the American elite and Hollywood celebrities – is striking in its elegant simplicity and is ideally suited for a classic bathroom whose interior is decorated in tile and marble with modern, minimalist decor. Aside from its resplendent interiors, the hotel is also renowned for its Remède Spa and Fitness Centre, one of the most exclusive spa centres in New York – an alluring island of tranquillity presented in supreme style and luxury.

CONTRASTING DESIGN The stylish Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht boutique hotel is located in the heart of Amsterdam. The hotel's design was developed by noted Dutch designer Marcel Wanders and was inspired by the urban concept of Amsterdam itself, one of the most creative and tolerant cities in Europe.

32

Marcel Wanders: "Amsterdam is the capital of democracy. There is a lot of freedom here and the city's residents often combine seemingly incompatible things. This is why the principal design theme is ‘combining contrasts’ and more specifically, pairs of separate, completely unconnected elements. When it came to creating the hotel's interior space, Wanders drew inspiration from various sources, integrating the cultural and historical heritage of the Dutch capital. His interpretation of the Dutch character is a striking feast for the eyes: the rooms, common areas, spa and restaurants are decorated with made-to-order furniture, traditional delft pottery, and hand-painted ceramics. The combination of blue and white can be found throughout the hotel interior, but it is especially noticeable in the guest bedrooms. On one wall

Whales are combined with combs, fish with spoons or vases – the "polarities" are conjoined with a cross stitch that doubles as a reference to Amsterdam's coat of arms. The famous Bisazza Bagno collection is on show in the bathrooms, giving the interiors a touch of stately chic. Here the collection's imperial affectation blends wonderfully with the sinks and wash stands, as well as with the ultramodern mixers. The restaurant and spa interiors are decorated using Bisazza mosaic palettes. A key detail of the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is the elevator area: a "corridor into infinity" glitters with numerous objets d'art like celestial bodies. URBAN Resort 38

One of the first urban resorts in the world, the Murano Resort Paris is part of the Design Hotels chain and offers a serene blend of classic luxury and modern design. The hotel is the culmination of two years of concept development, over 500 plans and drawings, 15 months of construction and ceaseless effort by designers Christine Derory and Raymond Morel and the team of decorators. The Murano Resort Paris is a small building located in the heart of one of the French capital's oldest and most stylish districts. The five-star hotel offers an unparalleled environment for both carefree leisure and highlevel business. The hotel has been completely outfitted with the latest technologies: its standard rooms and deluxe suites are all equipped with a lighting control system that allows guests to adjust the lighting level as well as the colour scheme. The spa and fitness centre as well as the individual terraces and pools come complete with cutting-edge equipment that guarantees guests an unforgettable stay.

The hotel's facade is a fascinating example of architectural blending: the upper stories preserve the classic 19th century style, while the lower stories are dressed in steel and thick matt glass. The Murano Resort Paris is, without a doubt, one of the most original hotels in the world, surprising and delighting guests with its exterior facade and interior decor. The use of the famous Italian brand Murano in the hotel's name becomes immediately clear when one takes in the hotel's interiors: elegant mirrors, sculptures, decorative teardrop-shaped elements and impressive chandeliers made to order by talented Italian craftsmen. The decor unites modern touches and Baroque features, making every detail look utterly original. The pop art style drapes and upholstery gracing the multi-coloured walls, flat-screen panels in the bar and stalactite lights in the restaurant – all of this visibly demonstrates that this is not simply a hotel, but a love letter to Art Nouveau. The design implemented in the common areas and guest rooms is continued in the bathrooms, which are presented as more than simply

REACHING FOR THE MOON

The Mira Moon Hotel in Hong Kong is a true work of art. Together, Marcel Wanders and Yoo Design Studio have succeeded in creating a symbiosis of high technology, modern materials and Chinese precision in the hotel's interiors. 42

Designer Marcel Wanders

"The hotel's philosophy is a feeling of celebration and magic," says Wanders. "The Wan Chai district where the Mira Moon is located is dynamic and possesses a unique exotic aura that serves as a fabulous backdrop for the hotel. I wanted to create interiors where a Western aesthetic was mixed with Asian sensibility. Ultimately the idea was to impart an effect that was romantic, inspiring and poetic. Yoo Design Studio has a distinct design vision similar to my own, which is why we decided to join forces." The name Mira Moon is linked to the traditional Chinese Moon Festival. In many ways, the hotel is the embodiment of this enchanting celebration. In adherence to ancient beliefs, at this time of year incense is lit to appease the moon goddess Chang'e and her companion the Jade Rabbit, who is forever pounding out the elixir of life in a mortar and pestle.

“This sense of folklore and mythology is an important one for me, says Wanders. "We have to remember the stories and fairy tales we were told as children: they taught us how to dream. I spin a tale like a writer and later bring that story to life as a designer. We can unite the world of dreams and reality. I love these little moments. They are always welcome in my world! The mythological theme is carried over into the design of all the hotel's interiors: in the lobby and foyer, as well as in all the rooms and suites. The richly patterned ceiling and wall panels are a tribute to the mastery of Chinese woodcarvers. Stone carving, ceramics, textiles, and red and orange accents also demonstrate the close link between contemporary design and traditional crafts. "All the furniture pieces and accessories have been specially developed and decorated in the traditional style," explains Wanders. "For example, the lanterns in the foyer are symbolic, embellished with gold balls

and embossed with the characters from the Chinese myth. The idea was to have these lanterns move up and down in sync with the daily motion of the moon. The elongated Tulip Armchair in the lobby area imitates the flower bud and is a reinterpretation of the classic armchair. The peony motif, which is a key element in this story, also appears in a whole host of decorative items (screens, carpeting and walls). In Chinese mythology, the peony is the king of flowers and a symbol of wealth and honour." The floral patterned mosaic panels in the bathrooms draw the viewer's attention to interesting details. The use of mosaic in interiors is a trend with a rich history. Its durability and water-resistance make it essential when decorating bathrooms, pools and spas. The floral theme is continued in the Axor mixers from Hansgrohe selected specially for the hotel's bathrooms. The mixers are the work of talented Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola and resemble elegant plant stems. Their smooth lines and broad surfaces create a harmonious ensemble with the decor

of the bathroom, whose expansive windows look out onto the stunning Victoria Harbour. The best way to enjoy this view is while relaxing in the free-standing bathtub, allowing the comfort and luxury to soothe away mundane cares and concerns. Marcel Wanders: "The hotel's 'heart' beats to the same rhythm as the city around it. We found a balance between old and new, starting with classic items. This work teaches you to respect the past. Back then, people didn't talk about style, but about what the old masters called ‘manner’. When someone looks at the Mira Moon interiors, I want them to say: 'Oh, I know, this is Wanders.'"

WATERPROOF KNOW-HOW

Collections Brands Technologies Production

In the last few years, the classic ceramic tile has gained a worthy rival in the form of waterproof wallpaper and other rolled wall coverings. These alternative materials are not only impervious to water and steam, but also simplify the application process and, most importantly, allow designers to carry out ambitious, bespoke projects.

1

48

2 High-tech developments in finishing materials provide designers with ever greater choice when it comes to bathroom interiors. Manufacturers of wallpapers for use in bathrooms reduce the hydroscopicity (ability to absorb water) of the covering as much as possible, as this is the primary cause of peeling and swelling. With cutting-edge technologies at their

fingertips, today’s designers have a whole range of materials that can circumvent these problems. Primarily, this means water-repellent coatings – waterproof polymer coating, soaking, waxing, or fibreglass in the sheet structure. The varieties of wall coverings with a waterproof coating can also include metal sheeting and photographic wall coverings. The former

l TRENDS are made by applying a thin layer of foil to a base, after which the surface is embossed or covered with a pattern. The latter is produced by printing photographic images onto a water-resistant covering. Modern liquid wallpapers are also suitable for decorating rooms with increased moisture. These innovative wallpapers take the form of a water-based plaster, and their application requires careful priming of wall surfaces and sealing with a coat of water-repellent varnish. Fibreglass wall coverings are almost ideal for bathroom interiors. The material's structure is made up of woven fibres that have been stretched at temperatures of 1200°Х and that come from natural non-toxic minerals such as quartz sand, sodium, lime and dolomite. The strands are woven into a textile that is completely resistant to moisture and temperature variations. Fibreglass wall coverings are notable for their robust fire retardant properties, while the absence of any breeding ground for microorganisms prevents the growth of fungus and mould. The fabric structure of the material allows air to circulate freely, preventing condensation. In addition, the sheets are waterproof and acid and alkali resistant. Modern colouring technologies mean that fibreglass wall coverings can be painted virtually any colour. Profideco mesh wall covering from German company MOHR can be listed among these top-end innovations. Its resistant coating is made up of a non-woven cellulose base to which a decorative layer of cellulose foam is added. This creates a steam-diffusing material that draws out excess moisture without losing its shape or colour. Mesh wall coverings closely imitate large and small structural plasterwork and can also recreate over 60 types of patterns. The combination of cuttingedge technologies and bold design ideas helped create the covering from 3D-CyberTex. It can light up in the dark, turning any room into a futuristic space. The covering is moisture-resistant and boasts numerous design possibilities. Modern manufacturing technologies enable the production of a

50

whole range of wall coverings suitable for use in rooms with increased moisture. Thanks to this, wallpaper has become a popular bathroom finishing material around the world. The use of wallpaper in design projects is a reflection of the global progressive trend in decor: sheets ensure simple application and use, offer a faster and more cost-effective solution and expand the design possibilities for interiors, making them almost infinite.

WOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER

Bathtubs Basins Showers Decorative finish

O

ne must only look to Japan to be convinced that wood is much more than merely a practical solution for bathroom decoration. The traditional bath found in Japanese homes – a deep wooden tub – demonstrates that wood is also an ideal material for manufacturing sanitary ware. The impetus for the creation of the ofuro originated in Buddhist philosophy, which forbids the killing of animals, and consequently, the use of soap. Hot water and natural wood create the right conditions for warming, relaxing and cleaning the body without breaking Buddhist principles. Today's designers draw inspiration from Japan's bathing traditions.

The intricate details are fitted tightly together, polished, and then secured with adjustable rims made from stainless steel bands. In order to impart all the benefits of the traditional Japanese bath, sawdust is usually added to the water when bathing in the BLUMENBERG tub. As a result of the action of the water and the high temperature, the sawdust secretes therapeutic oils, making the process especially effective and enjoyable. 2. An important aspect of the hotel's offering is its protection of the surrounding environment. When still in the construction phase, the Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort was the first and only candidate for the international LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificate in Turkey. The hotel's construction was overseen by Turkish company Regnum, part of the Öztürk Group. The interiors and furniture were designed and implemented by Profil Mimarlık in collaboration with Arketipo, which has been praised for its numerous projects within Turkey and abroad.

Master of Architecture Mert Yanpal (Profil Mimarlık): "The starting point for our architectural design was the desire to immerse guests in a natural environment. By using a town-style layout for the hotel, with main buildings and single-storey villas for guests who crave peace and tranquillity, we forged a link between the interiors and nature. Using natural finishing materials such as stone, wood and ceramics, we achieved a unique design experience that is inextricably linked to the comfortable, natural and relaxing environment."

Taking inspiration from the nature around the hotel, the project's designers selected the Carya illinoinensis as the interior’s main element. Regarded as the ancestor of the humble walnut, it served as the source for various decorative details in the hotel that use the texture and macro images of this exotic tree. Carya trees can reach 65 metres in height. The feeling of such height is stunningly conveyed in the impressive scale of the hotel's lobby. Expertise means selecting what's best, what's

new, and what's good for the body. All the products used in GreenDoor Spa & Wellness are organic and fully certified. FIVE-STAR

Theatre

The interior designers of the RENAISSANCE Hotel in Moscow took their inspiration from the Ballets Russes, who mesmerised audiences in 1920s Paris

68

Marcel Bequillard and Paul Brigido from MBID have recreated the luxury of an ornate theatre interior with a combination of mosaic gold and ebony, architectural lighting, ceramics and textiles. The fluidly curving ceiling in the lobby, the reception desks and the staircase all come together to create an exquisite whole. The central decorative element of the main lobby is the dramatic chandelier with its shade

of overflowing crystals, set against the backdrop of the gold and silver mosaic wall. The floor of the lobby, hallways and stairs are laid with KERAMA MARAZZI ceramic granite, with the designers choosing the Passing and Oxford collections as well as the Spicery tile. The Andreevsky Ballroom, one of the most luxurious conference halls in Moscow, is located on the first floor of the hotel. The ball-

room’s high ceiling is studded with contemporary crystal chandeliers, whose lustre is reflected in the gleaming wall coverings. The hall leads into the foyer, where the richly patterned carpeting and streaming chandelier of overflowing crystals contribute to the vivacious design. The hotel's winning feature is its bespoke bronze lights with their precise, geometric lines. Each bathroom is equipped with cutting-edge sanitary ware, but

the Presidential Suite stands out for the impressive variety of spa treatments it offers, including aroma- and colour therapy. The RENAISSANCE's wellness zone has been designed with particular care and attention. KERAMA MARAZZI ceramic granite was also used in the finishing of the swimming pool, changing rooms and showers, where the designers

opted for pastel hues with a nonslip surface. The ceramic granite on display throughout the hotel is produced using dry press technology, which ensures uniformity, eliminates fissures and provides enhanced durability. In the production process, dry, hard pigments are applied at high temperatures and pressures, which achieves exceptionally subtle and smooth colour gradients and natural tones.

Hotels today are complex organisms with specific requirements not only for their design, but for their finishing materials as well. The restrained luxury and refined elegance of the RENAISSANCE have been achieved thanks to the painstakingly selected interior components and the thoughtful composition that ties all of these details together.

The Italian specialists from Wellness Today (Happy Sauna Group) who built the club, as well as the project's designers – architects from Studio D73 – strove to give the club the appearance of a chic holiday resort where elite clientele combine indulgent spa treatments with salubrious exercise. The project's architects, Marco Vismara and Andrea Viganò, are graduates of the Politecnico di Milano who work in their native Italy as well as in Tunisia, Russia and other countries. Their projects include commercial centres, hotels, spas and fitness centres, and in 2007 they were awarded the international Metra prize, followed in 2013 by the MosBuild ArchCeramic Ceramics and Architecture prize in the category "Artistic Interior Finishing of Public or Residential Buildings using Ceramic Tiles". SHADOWS

esigner Dima Loginov lives and works in Moscow. He creates interiors, furniture, ceramics and lights for world famous brands such as Artemide, VitrA, Elle Decoration, Studio Italia Design and Axo Light.

Loginov recently won a contest organised by Artemide with his impressive street lamps concept. Shadow takes centre stage in his new Nulla collection, becoming more important than the object itself. The soft and delicate illumination of objets d'art creates captivating, contrasting shadows that enhance any space. Dima Loginov: "The Fail Époque light from the Nulla collection is a play on 'Belle Époque'. For inspiration, I drew on the form of objects used in the table settings of this incredible period. But only the form – in content this is far from a classic design. It is a modern, minimalist object that is, in a way, incorporeal. What results is an interplay of modern design and Belle Époque forms, where the memory of this grand era is just a hint, just a wonderful remembrance of what we have almost forgotten and almost lost in the modern world."

IN THE SPIRIT OF

Neoclassicism

A

t the heart of Teuco's new Autoritratti collection lies a balanced combination of material and shape in the spirit of neoclassicism. With the Autoritratti concept, Teuco has rethought the limits of its design and united it with the best examples of Italian craftsmanship. Autoritratti is a journey that begins with the selection of the raw materials and ends with the selection of exclusive finishes, transforming a bathroom into a work of art. Carlo Colombo: "In this project we hoped to engage with an international audience and selected the more traditional style of neoclassicism, which allowed us to suit the tastes of Americans, Russians and Arabs. We selected our materials on the same principle. We used onyx, which suits tastes both in Europe and Asia."

irko Bosio was born in Italy, where he spent his childhood surrounded by products from the best architects and designers, paving the way for the emergence of his own creative nature.

He actively uses the latest technologies and new materials, offering today's consumers tomorrow's products. The PAINI HYBRID collection, dubbed one of the ten most stylish collections in the world, boasts a perfect combination of extravagance and functionality, as well as countless surprises thanks to its hidden technical innovations. SOFT MINIMALISM

A

ntonio Bullo is an Italian designer specialising in ceramics who has gained global recognition for his collection of unique bathroom fixtures. His four gold medals at the Faenza International Ceramic Competition and two Design Plus awards at ISH Frankfurt have solidified his status as master designer, but his work truly speaks for itself.

Today one of his most popular ranges is his collection of highly original wood sanitary ware. His Next Step and ABBY bathtubs hark back to traditional Japanese wooden baths, while the combination of straight lines and smooth angles in each model epitomises Antonio Bullo's own unique style, which can be fittingly described as "soft minimalism". The collection is designed for interiors with a zen, eco or classic style. The items are manufactured from teak or cedar and are treated using an ecofriendly soak to protect the wood against wear. They are finished with a modern exterior incorporating glass and metal details. Over the course of his long career, Bullo has consistently experimented with material and form. He has created designs for brands such as Villeroy & Boch, Ideal Standard, Ceramica Dolomite, Colombo Design, Hatria, Roca, Valli&Valli, Caleido, but he has mainly produced work for his own company, Plavisdesign. Bathtubs, basins, showers and mixers designed by Antonio Bullo are striking in both their provocative design and their soft forms.

he history of design is full of objects that capture the imagination and establish new trends. To this number we must now add the elegant collections of Tord Boontje, a London-based designer whose work delights the eye and soothes the soul.

Straddling the divide between design and handicrafts, Boontje creates exquisite glass items, ceramics, furniture and lights, combining cutting-edge technologies with traditional artisanal production methods. Tord Boontje: "For me, advanced technologies offer a way of creating new objects and a means of self-expression. Aside from this, I am also interested in items from the 17th-19th centuries that demonstrate a rich, sensitive use of materials and surfaces." In 2000 the designer's life underwent a major but wonderful change – his daughter was born, which inspired him to seek out softer forms. He began by researching decorative handicrafts, after which he became captivated by teddy bears, bunnies, flowers and other charming designs.

The Primavera Colore ceramic tile collection comprises 12 distinct decals applied by hand to brilliant and matt white tile. This splendid floral collection symbolises the first day of spring, its delicate and subtle patterns helping to create a beautiful and sensuous interior.

BATHROOMS A bathroom is more than just a space for personal hygiene. It is a place of rest, relaxation and solitude that helps us recharge after a long day. The room’s powerful effect on the mind and body comes not only from the water that washes away our daily cares, but from the habitual serenity and comfort it provides.

1

PANORAMIC WINDOWS

An expanse of glass is always a thing of beauty. The Constructivists first put forth the idea of living in houses with glass walls, where it represented a technocratic solution that reflected the triumph of man's reason over the laws of nature. Today, innovative developments have made panoramic windows a practical solution even in countries with harsh climates – a striking example of how progressive technologies and modern materials allow designers to realize unconventional interior and architectural designs.

GUIDING LIGHT

Interior designers believe that the bathroom should always be the best lit room in the house. Whether big or small, the bathroom is a space where we spend a sizeable portion of our day, which makes lighting a key element. Even if a bathroom is blessed with an abundance of natural light, this cannot be relied upon in the evenings. The main rule for intelligently placing light sources is to distribute them across three levels – low, middle (task lighting) and overhead.

3

BATHROOM WITH FIREPLACE

Throughout history, humanity has been drawn to two elements – fire and water. There is nothing we need more than these two building blocks of life. An authentic wood-burning or bio fireplace can help unite these two elements in a romantic interior in any bathroom. Only your imagination and the practical capabilities of your building will limit the possibilities of this striking addition to your bathroom interior.

OPEN PLAN

A combined bathroom and bedroom space is a tempting prospect for anyone who loves being at home. Open plan bathrooms have grown in popularity as we place ever greater value on time spent together. We are evolving to live without walls, making open bathroom spaces no longer a luxury, but a necessity.

5

ROOM WITH A VIEW

Windows enliven and enhance any interior, and bathrooms are no exception. Natural light is a crucial component here, opening up an often small space to make it feel light and airy. When deciding between a calculated interior aesthetic and a scenic view – the choice is clear. A natural backdrop also enhances the positive effect of hydrotherapy treatments and aids stress reduction.

COLOUR SCHEME

Colour plays a huge part in any bathroom, both in the decor as a whole and in the placement of accents, minor detailing and the combination of tones. Designers are right in thinking that colour can single-handedly enhance the style of a room and change the visual perception of a space, altering the impact of an entire design concept.

7

FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

This severe bathroom style is very popular among dynamic personalities who prefer a touch of individuality and extravagance in their home interiors. The style is continued in the sanitary ware and accessories: a careful selection of items made with cutting-edge materials that reflect the harsh yet flamboyant aesthetic of the interior. But the focus remains, as ever, on superior functionality.

CLASSIC FINISH

Classic bathroom design means a practical approach. Fashions are fleeting, tastes change, but the classic look is timeless. When it comes to bathrooms, “classic” means a certain maturity of thought and a drive for stability and perennial values. Classic is the desire to embrace in one's own family values the best of humanity’s shared cultural heritage.
