The arrival of September is the beginning of a new season, which sees new plans, changes and improvements. In the new issue of MosBuild Magazine, we develop our ideas and projects, so this issue is an organic extension of the previous one.

There is a wide range of materials in the magazine: articles for reflection, for enriching experience and for discussion. The useful and current information contained in the issue will be interesting to a wide readership, offering opportunities for greater creative activities and effective cooperation.

The issue focuses on the international trends in 2013-2014 that have emerged in construction, architecture, design and decor.

The “Unusually” trend combines unusual properties and functions in conventional structures and materials, and demonstrates the amazing possibilities of protec-

tive glass, light transmitting concrete, facades that breathe and doors that are not visible.

All the personalities featured in this issue are unconventional and rather extraordinary people.

The winners of the annual international red dot design awards and Golden Compass, whose works are published in the magazine, represent the best in creative design.

In the industrial society it is becoming more popular not only to find an exclusive, functional and aesthetic form, but also to present it to the world under a brand name.

In line with this trend, the magazine presents just such a project: a unique five-star hotel with a reconstructed facade and new interiors, designed by Foster + Partners.

ARCHITECTURE Modern architecture should not simply provide a roof over one’s head, but also be comfortable, light, and use natural resources efficiently.

Today, technological innovations are enabling architects to increasingly choose glass as a building material. Glass is valued for its ability to, on the one hand, offer protection from environmental effects and, on the other, to unite an interior space, filling it with sunlight and increasing the sense of space.

LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE A new public library has opened in the centre of the Dutch city of Spijkenisse. The shape of the library is reminiscent of a classic Dutch farm, referring to the agrarian past of the city. The project includes a number of rooms "folded" into the foundation for platforms with bookshelves.

The platforms in the shape of a pyramid are in the centre of the library’s main hall, creating a real “mountain of books”, protected by an unusual glass case. The design community highly rates the work of the MVRDV studio, the creators of the library project. In 2013, the project was awarded a red dot design award.

GREEN OFFICE The energy-efficient Galeo office complex by the architect Christian de Portzampar was built near Paris. The complex consists of three buildings, one of which has an energy-efficient architectural design. The load-bearing facade of the building is lined with zinc and on the outside covered with a double layer of glass plates from AGS Glass. The structure completely isolates the interior space from the outside, significantly reducing energy costs for air conditioning in the offices. There are also weather and motion sensors in the office that control lighting and blinds depending on time of day, sunlight and presence of people. The number of partitions and supports is kept to a minimum, allowing sunlight to easily reach the internal space, which leads to energy savings. The hot water for the restaurant located in the complex is heated by solar panels. Thanks to the green technology, the Galeo complex consumes 20 % less energy than required by French standards.

GLASS PARASOL Glass dominates in the architecture of one of the largest business schools in Europe, BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo. The building of glass lets in lots of sunlight, and on the top two floors there are panoramic windows overlooking the Norwegian capital. The space between the buildings is transformed into a closed gallery with a glass roof and completely transparent walls. This architectural parasol unites the business school buildings in a single complex, facilitating movement between the buildings.

“LIVING� FACADES AT THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY

The results have been announced of the competition for the facade concept development of the new museum complex at the State Tretyakov Gallery.

SPEECH architectural studio has won the contest to design the new building of the State Tretyakov Gallery, which will house restorers, additional exhibitions and store rooms. The contest was announced by the Moscow Architecture Committee. The project is being supervised by the board of trustees of the Tretyakov Gallery, and the chief architect of Moscow, Sergei Kuznetsov. Acting as an expert is Andrei Bokov, head of Mosproekt 4 and the project creator of the new museum complex of the State Tretyakov Gallery. The winning concept fully meets the needs of the Tretyakov Gallery and conforms to the image of a museum of the new millennium, embodying modern styling while creating an association with the existing building.

SYMBIOSIS IN HIGH-TECH STYLE The Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa is known as a philosopher and founder of metabolism in architecture, and is the author of more than a hundred books, as well as the architect of many projects worldwide. His architectural style is unique. Japanese colleagues call him “sensei”, which translated means “teacher”.

Kisho Kurokawa (1934 – 2007) was born in the city of Nagoya in Japan. He graduated from Kyoto University in 1957 and in 1964 completed his PhD studies at the Graduate School of Tokyo University under Kenzo Tange. In 1962, he established Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates, which now has offices in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kuala Lumpur and St. Petersburg.

urokawa formulated the concept of metabolism in architecture, according to which cities and individual buildings should not ossify in their original form, but, on the contrary, develop with their surroundings. Over time, Kurokawa perfected this theory, extending it to symbiosis – the organic interaction and mutually beneficial co-existence of nature and cities. In 1987, the architect outlined his philosophical views in the book “The Philosophy of Symbiosis”, for which he later received an important Japanese literary award, one of many he has been awarded. Kurokawa’s projects have received many awards, not only in Japan but also in the UK, France, China and the United States.

According to Eastern philosophy, a concept is only living when it is backed up by real actions. The theory of metabolism in architecture is brought to life in the Nakagin Capsule Tower, which has become a symbol of the architecture of its time and joined the list of the world’s architectural heritage.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower has two rod-like cores, to which 140 ready-made capsule apartments are attached, forming adjoining towers of 11 and 13 floors.

Each capsule, which measures 10 m², functions as a complete apartment or office. The space has a wall panel with TV, radio and alarm clock, a minimalist kitchen, bathroom and bed under a large round window. Each capsule is connected to the core by four high-tension bolts. The capsules were made at a factory and taken to the building site, where they were fastened to the core shaft.

The project embodies the concept of metabolism in architecture: the capsules can easily be replaced and the existing blocks can be joined to create a larger space. According to the architect’s original idea, the

capsules should be replaced by more modern versions every 25 years, although no replacements have been made in the past 41 years. The classic design of the tower is eternal, but today the Tokyo authorities must address the issue of how to preserve the building’s concept, while at the same time modernising the Nakagin Tower Capsule.

In the nineties, Kisho Kurokawa became one of the founders of high-tech architecture, with buildings such as Wheelock Place in Singapore and Oita Stadium in Japan, which hosted the World Cup in 2002.

Oita became the Japan’s first Olympic format stadium with a closing roof. The size of the field is 105 x 68 m, and the stadium seats 43,000 people. Owing to its shape, the arena gained a nickname: the Big Eye. In this same period, Kurokawa created one of his most famous buildings, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia. The building is an example of the progressive ideas of architectural metabolism: the airport adapts to its inhabitants. In Kuala Lumpur International Airport there are high-speed lifts, moving walkways, and a driverless airport train, but with plenty of greenery and light penetrating through the building, which has numerous glass facades. Also this is an example of showing the method of Abstract symbolism; the symbiosis between cutting-edge technology and Islamic tradition.

Kisho Kurokawa and has also completed many projects in his own country, Japan. One of his most recent buildings was the National Art Centre in Tokyo.

any of the halls. The centre also houses a library, lecture room, restaurant, cafe and shop.

The first floor of the National Art Centre is 13,000 m², and total floor area is 50,000 m², making it the largest museum in Japan. In the atrium are two inverted cones, the upper part of which house a restaurant and cafe.

The building features an unusual solution to protect the exhibits and visitors from direct sunlight: outer horizontal glass louvers intercept UV light throughout the day and control the sunlight by combination of inside vertical mullion.

Kisho Kurokawa’s experience and innovation have also attracted customers from Russia, where the architect was invited to design the Zenit stadium on Kresto-

vsky Island in St. Petersburg. The stadium should be one of the key venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The project was approved in 2006, having impressed the Commission with its symbiotic combination of high technology and respect for the environment and architecture of St. Petersburg. The stadium – which features a movable field system and retractable roof with hot air-inflated membrane structure – will accommodate 67,000 people and fit seamlessly into the historical appearance of Krestovsky Island.

Given the extensive area of the air conditioned space, the originality of the design and the multitude of functions, the Zenit stadium promises to be the northernmost elite stadium n the world.

Construction of the stadium was due to be completed in 2011, but whenever it is finally finished, the architect will sadly not see it. Today the stadium needs a new mastermind, who, like Kurokawa, treats reverently not only his own project, but also the architectural face of St. Petersburg.

Kisho Kurokawa will be remembered by the world for his attempt to find a balance between nature and man, and for embodying it in architecture. Building on the traditions of Japan and using unique living forms and new materials, he worked for the future of global construction, providing architectural examples of harmonious interaction between the world of nature and man-made fruits of civilisation. His works will be specially mentioned as rare examples reflected and made symbiosis between the culture and society of the country.

WAVES OVER BELGRADE The British architect Zaha Hadid has created a master plan for wave-like complex in the capital of Serbia. Zaha Hadid Architects have proposed a flowing design for the reconstruction of Beko, an abandoned textile factory in Belgrade.

he British architect Zaha Hadid has created a master plan for wave-like complex in the capital of Serbia. Zaha Hadid Architects have proposed a flowing design for the reconstruction of Beko, an abandoned textile factory in Belgrade. According to the Beko Masterplan project, on the site of the former factory a multifunctional complex will be built. The complex will include residential apartments, shops, cafes, offices, a convention centre, five-star hotel and underground parking. The new Beko complex will occupy about 94,000 m².

The site is located in the heart of the city, by the walls of Belgrade’s fortress. An important task for the architect in this project was to preserve the historical landscape. The masterplan by Zaha Hadid Architects takes into account the region’s strong modernist traditions and continues its development in this style. The

The large-scale complex consists of buildings of different heights, shapes and areas. The buildings flow into one another, creating a single structure that combines harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

The project also provides green spaces, which are much needed in this former industrial quarter.

One of the most important design features of the project is the undulating ground scrape, which provides a link between the floors and makes it easier to navigate through the complex.

The Beko Masterplan offers an innovative approach to the functional zoning of the site: the architects have sought to erase the boundaries between the elements of the complex. The Beko interior is a series of connecting rooms that have no clear limits. This approach not only visually increases the space, but also expands the possibilities of its use.

The undulating topography of the site offers additional advantages: beautiful views towards the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, the Kalemegdan Castle, and, internally, to the other buildings of the complex.

The flowing architecture, which has become a hallmark of Zaha Hadid, helps the Beko multifunctional complex to blend in with the existing buildings, giving lightness and variety to the renewed urban landscape.

A FACADE AS A BUILDING’S BUSINESS CARD Light transmitting concrete, tempered glass, metal and composite panels - the facades of buildings today are made from the most modern materials. The evolution of technology allows us to make facade cladding more durable and easy to install, and opens up new architectural possibilities.

The CROCODILE system by ZERRINGER allows you to mount metal panels (cassettes) of any structure, composite or all-metal.

Laboratory tests and practice have shown that quick-mount profiles offer not only easy assembly, but also improved strength in the panel surface. The CROCODILE system has several options to reduce the number of vertical columns. Firstly, the option of mounting panels of different widths, wherein the number of vertical columns is not related to the width of the material; and

secondly using different types of mounting profiles (ZSS-13, ZSS-14, U-1, U-2) that provide stable resistance to both vertical and horizontal loads, even with a significant distance between the vertical supports. CROCODILE quick-mount profiles provide an even surface, and enable diagonal assembly of panels and their attachment to vertical rails, and the dismantling of the panel directly in the centre of the facade.

TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE German researchers have offered a truly unique innovative design for construction: translucent or, more precisely, light transmitting concrete. Lucem has already announced the start of production of the new material and the launch of the new development in the construction market. The light transmitting blocks are made of finegrained concrete with optical fibre, which allows the unusual effect to be achieved. The light transmitting concrete looks very light, almost weightless. In addition, according to experts, the concrete is no different from ordinary concrete: it is just as strong and durable. The concrete panels can be connected to a lighting control system with the help of modern computer technology. The system allows you to control more than 16 million colours, turning the usual facade of a building into a huge screen for a spectacular light show. According to the developers of the product, the introduction of innovative translucent concrete blocks in the construction market will provide an opportunity to expand the possibilities of modern design and architecture.

U-KON SYSTEMS is preparing to present its unique developments at MosBuild Fenestration 2014. One of them is a solution for mounting on ventilated facades cladding panels of tempered glass or photovoltaic modules. The cladding panels are ready-made cassettes consisting of a frame and flat tempered glass or photovoltaic module inside.

ALUTECH ALT F50 TX “hot-cold” facade system. The “hot-cold” facade system is intended for the glazing of buildings, where it is necessary to combine the translucent and insulating part of the facade with the cold part of a blank wall. The translucent part does not exceed 30-40% of the total area of the facade. The use of a standard rack and pinion system in such cases is not practical, because the size of the blank part of the building is much larger than the area of the translucent part, and the transition from blank part to translu-

cent requires labour-intensive thermal and hydro insulation operations.

The difference in the cost of materials using the ALT F50 TX can range from 15 % to 30 % cheaper, depending on the area of the cold zone. THE MODERN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY According to the National Agency for LowRise and Cottage Construction, to heat one square metre of housing in Russia an average of 13 litres of fuel is consumed per year. In Canada, which has similar weather conditions to Russia, the figure is 3.5-4 litres per year.

The energy saving potential in construction and public utilities alone is at least 400 million tonnes of standard fuel per year, or 30-40 % of the country’s total energy consumption.

Successful innovations open up more opportunities for further building of energyefficient houses in Russia. A clear example of the active promotion of Passive House technologies is a major order for the construction of low-rise buildings from the Moscow Regional Government.

“Our country has adopted a number of laws and other documents that promote the development of energy-efficient technologies,” said Alexander Elokhov, director of the Russian Passive House Institute, in an interview. “However, sometimes their implementation has been hampered by a lack of experience. And curiosity emerges from implemented projects. For example, federal and regional officials are interested in passive house project in Europe. Many have visited Germany and other countries, and seen projects that they liked.

But when it comes to the issue of fulfilling a plan, they say that need to understand that it is justified economically, they need the figures and to know specifically how the existing project works. Today we are just trying to create a community of people that are interested in this. We work with designers, architects and manufacturers, while architects and designers work directly with customers, awaking their interest and start-

ing to implement projects. Of course, you need to go to the ministries, to officials, and to work with different associations. When there are groups of interested people, and a number of implemented objects, it makes things easier. And we are now engaged in the development and execution of projects. Obviously we also want to create an association, but at the moment we have sufficient internal resources. There is also knowledge and experience sharing. For example, within MosBuild, in conjunction with the organisers, we successfully conduct a two-day international conference entitled “Technologies for the Design and Construction of Energy-Efficient Buildings (Passive House)”. Successful innovations open up more opportunities for further building of energy-efficient houses in Russia. A clear example of the active promotion of Passive House technologies is a major order for the construction of lowrise buildings from the Moscow Regional Government.

At the start of the 21st century the Russian economy is characterised by extremely high energy consumption, 2-3 times more than the energy consumption of the developed economies. For comparison: based on published data the specific energy consumption of the gross domestic product in Russia in 2010 was 1290 kg of standard fuel per $1000, while globally the average was 443 kg. However, during the significant economic downturn, the consumption of electricity and heat fell slightly. This is largely due to the increase of heat and energy consumption in the residential sector. Unfortunately, this process is not so much due to growth in housing stock, but rather to the increasing loss of thermal energy resources in housing and public utility networks. Given all this, it becomes clear how important it is for the country to improve the performance of buildings and to reduce energy consumption in homes.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUILD ENERGY-EFFICIENT AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN RUSSIA?

If you look at the long-term and highly successful experience of Western countries, then in modern construction, in terms of the level of energy consumption of finished projects, there are the following types of buildings: standard, averagely efficient, passive and active.

Let’s consider the features of passive – i.e., low consumption – houses, and find out what Russian builders and materials developers are currently offering the property market.

There are different ways to save energy. One of the most effective ways to increase energy efficiency is to use modern energy-saving technologies. An efficient and proven solution to this problem is offered by Mosstroy-31, which in cooperation with German experts and architects from the Passive House Institute, already has experience in realising such projects, with their subsequent certification according to European standards. “Housing must be affordable to operate, and this can be achieved by using energy-efficient technologies,” says Mosstroy-31 CEO Shota Khabelašvili. “Our company is always interested in energy-saving issues, we support and promote all the innovative technologies that help save the country’s ener-

For innovative thermal insulation of facades Neopor® is used, a material made from expandable polystyrene (EPS). Another product is extruded polystyrene foam, Styrodur® C, which is hard, and resistant to compression and water. In addition to the the multilayer outer thermal insulation ETICS, which uses Neopor® expandable polystyrene and elements of formwork from Styrodur® C, there are a number of new design solutions popular in the construction of passive buildings.

These include decorative sound-absorbing elements made from Basotect® expandable polystyrene, a lightweight, fire-resistant and easy to handle material, as well as solar collectors, for the thermal insulation of which Basotect is used. Even under high temperatures Basotect® maintains good heat insulating capability for a long time. In addition, this solution has a positive effect on air exchange processes in the collector under various climatic conditions.

The Elithis Tower in Dijon (France) produces more energy than it consumes. The architects, Arte Charpentier Architects, placed 330 solar panels on the roof and the facade of the ten-storey office centre. AN OFFICE IN MELBOURNE WITHOUT CARBON Today, from pixels you can create not only a picture, but also an actual building. This is the case in Melbourne (Australia), where the construction of the Pixel Building was recently completed. The project is based on the use of renewable energy. “Green protection” is planted along the “pixel” windows with special window sills, which neutralises the emissions of carbon dioxide. And on the roof of the tower are wind turbines and solar panels to generate electricity, as well as special tanks to collect rainwater. The Pixel Building project was awarded a perfect “green system” score; indeed, one of the achievements of the architects was to achieve carbon neutrality.

OLYMPIC ECO-TECHNOLOGY For the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), it is planned to build a tower that will provide electricity to the Olympic village and be an impressive spectacle for tourists. The project, put forward by RAFAA Architecture and Design, proposes equipping the tower set of solar panels that will generate energy during the day. This energy should be enough to pump water to giant reservoirs on the upper floors of the tower. The water will drop down to form a picturesque waterfall and simultaneously producing electricity at night. It will also be possible to enjoy panoramic views of the Ocean coast and artificial waterfall from the observation deck on the top floor of the tower. Nearby will be a restaurant and shopping centre.

TRANSPARENT “SWALLOW'S NEST�

The Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut, known for his eco-projects, has designed a shopping and entertainment centre for the city of Taichung (Taiwan). The complex is called Swallow's Nest. At the base of the glass structure is an elliptical Mobius strip of triangles rotated 80 times around the axis. The pillars that support the Swallow's Nest go under the earth, where they form underground floors with cafes and shops, workshops and archives, parking lots and a protection system against natural disasters. Thanks to the glass coverings of the underground floors, through which direct sunlight penetrates, energy consumption for lighting is significantly reduced.

Phototech includes a design bureau and production units, owing to which we have been able to develop an original way of making fire-resistant aluminium profiles by filling their central chamber with various heat resistant and heat-absorbing compositions.”

KNOW-HOW. The essence of the method used lies in the reinforcement of the aluminium profile with a fire-resistant filling, such as steel pipe, with a thermal protective coating.

When exposed to flame the external aluminium profile and the thermal protective coating hamper unilateral heating of the internal reinforcement tubes. The limited intensity of the heat flow on the on pipe reduces the temperature difference between

its walls and thus reduces the deformation of the structure under identical thermal loads compared with deformations of fire resistant steel pipe with no such protection.

Small bends in the unilateral heating profile lead to significant reduction of mechanical loads on fireproof glass. This allows you to install in the fire-prevention structures designed and manufactured by the company glass and glazing of over 2 m or glass of smaller thickness.

To ensure a higher limit of fire resistance, the steel pipe cavity can be filled with heat-absorbing materials.

Despite the fact that the aluminum alloy melts and flows down from the heated surface of the structure in 20-25 minutes after the start of testing, the structure itself, depending on the filling, may have fire resistance over 90 minutes.

SMART GLASS. Electrochromic glass is becoming more popular in the translucent structures market.

The secret of its success is that it can be either completely opaque or transparent in just a second. There is also the possibility of using any intermediate version, thanks to gradual voltage. This effect is achieved by supplying voltage of 65V to a multilayered liquid crystal film, part of a triplex, as a consequence of which the liquid crystals obtain the desired spatial orientation, and the glass is optically transparent. Energy consumption for such glass is extremely small, and the service life is long. Smart glass can be of any size and colour, and can also be included in normal, fire-resistance and protective glass.

FIRE DOORS. Tests were carried out recently at Russia’s FGU VNIIPO and the fire doors received a certificate of EI 60 fire resistance, and a fire safe structure with bent glass was prepared. The use

of special equipment allows you to fit glass on glass and not only in a straight line, but also at any angle to each other. Tests have shown the method and sealing materials are highly efficient.

CONCEALED TECHNOLOGY The invisible hinges already mounted on the door leaf are adjustable along three axes. There is a fourth setting with which, by tightening or loosening the frame screws, you can improve the fit of the door, making it perfectly flush. The gap between the door leaf and frame is minimised thanks to the exceptionally snug fit, and sound insulation is achieved by the use of foam rubber seal.

FIVE STARS IN LONDON

The new five-star hotel Me London has opened in the heart of the UK capital. The 1920s building, which has been fully renovated by the Foster + Partners studio, contains rooms, apartments and a luxury penthouse with panoramic views.

The shape and exterior of Me London echo the building next door, Marconi House, which is built in Edwardian style. The hotel’s windows are shaped like traditional prismatic “lamps”, and the facade is faced with slabs of Portland stone, a material that is typical for central London. The core of the ten-storey building is a corner tower topped by a glass dome. By its base is the building’s main entrance.

Reserved on the outside, the hotel is luxuriously finished on the inside, in line with its five-star rating.

The rich interior is done in a minimalist style based on the yin and yang principle, with a contrasting combination of white and black colours.

An atrium in the form of a hollow pyramid, with a small window above, serves as the main hall in the hotel. The design of the space contrasts the snow-white marble on the walls with the black on the floor. The furniture, which is in the same colour scheme and rectangular or round in shape, clearly demonstrates the combination of yin and yang in the interior. But the strongest impression is created by a play of light: a pattern of geometric shapes appears on the walls.

The interiors of the rooms are also decorated in light colours to contrast with the corridors of black marble with diffuse lighting. The effect achieved is that on entering or leaving the hotel the guests feel that they are moving from darkness to light.

The interior is given added variety by LED lighting that can fill the space with new colour. The highlight of the restaurant is the unusually shaped chandelier.

Most of the public areas in Me London are finished in more varied colours. Shades of ochre predominate in the lobby. The bar, chandeliers, carpets, chairs and sofas in the lobby have a soft, streamlined form. The space is zoned using partitions.

The restaurant has a similar interior design.

Shades of ochre are interspersed with rich chocolate and black colours. The interior is given added variety

by LED lighting that can fill the space with new colour.

The highlight of the restaurant is the unusually shaped chandelier. Seating for guests around the small tables is provided by chairs and round sofas. This arrangement creates an isolated island, allowing the guests to enjoy an intimate atmosphere.

In the bar, the Foster studio has combined textures of natural stone and wood. The marble floor contrasts with the board ceiling, and the furniture is again dominated by smooth lines.

The glass dome at the top of the tower is occupied by a two-story penthouse and by a bar with a terrace, which offers dizzying views of the centre of the British capital. The terrace is divided into two parts. One is furnished with round black and white chairs with tiny tables and heaters, and the other features lightly coloured rectangular sofas and wicker tables, which give the interior the coziness of a country house.

The rooms are decorated in a monochrome light palette. The minimalistic colours are more than compensated for by the rich textures of the luxurious natural fabrics and interior finishing materials. Natural leather, black varnished wood and onyx are used in the interiors of Me London.

Norman Foster, the Founder and Chairman of Fosters + Partners, is a life peer and was appointed by the Queen to the Order of Merit in 1997. In 1999 he became the twenty-first Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate.

Lord Foster has repeatedly proven his ability to combine tradition and innovation. When designing a new project, he always takes into account the individuality of the architectural environment. Explaining his approach, Lord Foster says: “My mission is to create a structure that is sensitive to the culture and climate of its place”.

By providing a new interior inside a traditional exterior, Me London will reinvigorate London, while maintaining its traditions. Buildings like Me London are needed to restore the West End to its former glory.

DEPTH OF WALLPAPER The Dutch designer Marcel Wanders is known for his versatile solutions. Be it creating interiors or carpet, tile or wallpaper collections, he mixes eras, giving a classic look to modern objects and a sense of history.

For Graham & Brown Wanders has created an elite wallpaper collection called Couture, which includes classic prints and unusual colour solutions. For interiors there are eight combinations of neutral and bright colours. For example, Isabella prints combine a soft pink pattern with a background colour of coal.

All the wallpapers are made on special Graham & Brown paper, which has a matt finish with metallic and glossy trims. The collection comprises single-layered and multilayered papers, Simplex and Duplex respectively. The complex structure of the latter allows you to see the depth of the pattern, and provides surprising optical effects. Duplex has an additional coating that protects the paper from external influences. Several of the designs by Marcel Wanders have been made using a special method of applying paint to the base, resulting in an embossed effect.

Graham & Brown also produce the Couture wallpaper range, with a sound and heat insulating layer. This makes the collection not only beautiful but also very practical.

THE FUTURE OF FAMILIAR THINGS Ora Ito, one of the most sought-after designers, creates models of current and future products for leading manufacturers.

Creating non-existent model of world brands and publishing them on the Internet is, it turns out, the shortest route to fame. This is exactly what the French innovator Ora Ito did, and in the process became very much in demand in the world of design. Today he creates models of present and future goods for leading manufacturers worldwide.

Together with the German company Parador, Ito created a collection of contemporary laminate, Edition1. The unusually bright colour solution of the products has no effect on their durability. The flooring is impregnated with the moisture-resistant coating AquaProof and equipped with a sound insulating composite underlay called Akustic. The laminate is made of wood and eco-friendly resins, giving an antistatic surface. The Edition 1 collection is suitable for retail and office spaces, but looks especially effective in high tech style interiors.

From designing laminate to carpeting. The Parquet Rug module collection imitates the parts of parquet, bringing together asymmetric modules of different thicknesses and textures. The products are made of 100% wool scraps.

The colour range includes anthracite, green, blue, purple and red shades. From the modules it is easy to assemble carpeting of the necessary shape and

shade. If necessary, part of the carpet can be replaced or assembled again, refreshing the interior design. ITO created the Parquet Rug collection for the Turkish company Stepevi, whose manufacturing traditions date back to 1919.

The focus on natural materials and innovative form has proved successful, and today carpets assembled from Parquet Rug modules grace many interiors.

The most comprehensive project by Ora Ito has been a monolithic kitchen for the company Gorenje. The kitchen is created from simple lines and enclosed in a cube with smoothed corners. A simple shape with complex content, the favoured approach of the designer, is used in this case: the elegant, minimalist Gorenje kitchen is equipped with the latest technology.

At the Moscow Design Week last year Ito presented the prototype of the “Savvinskaya, 23” cafe, named after the centre in which it is due to be located. The project features impressive smooth curving lines and a futuristically shaped bar counter. The bright colour also attracts attention.

Ora Ito can create a distinctive idea for almost any familiar domestic object. The designer defines his style as “simplexity”, the unity of simplicity and complexity. His designs - whether it's a mat, car or cafe - are always ergonomic and directed at the future.

An architect by training, Alain Berteau has devoted himself to industrial design, in which he has achieved international recognition. His products , from creative flash drives to pieces of furniture, are ergonomic and functional.

Berteau was one of the first to turn to designing glass objects. According to him, "Glass is an amazing material. It is a versatile and multi-functional product. It opens a lot of possibilities."Graphics and text printed on glass give individuality, even to mass produced goods. And Berteau fully applies this method. For AGC Glass Europe, he has created the line of unique designs for glass partitions, Functional Patterns, produced from Artlite Digital glass. The image is applied to the glass by ink printing on an enamel base, while varying degrees of transparency can be achieved by the colour applied. After the image is applied, the Artlite Digital glass is subjected to a hardening process, so the glass becomes more durable and safe. The paint is resistant to abrasion, moisture and UV rays.

NAMED COLLECTIONS The British designer Carl Robinson, the creator of the eponymous brand, is known worldwide as a designer of creative wall coverings and matching fabrics.

The culmination of the designer’s work has been the creation of his own eponymous wallpaper collections. Their design features a rich colour palette, three-dimensional images, unique coatings, and realistic imitations of various textures: tapestries, leather, vintage covers, and watercolours with images of delicate rose buds. To create the collections, Robinson, a third generation designer, revived pattern sketches by his grandfather: “Creating wallpapers has become for me an expression of inner creativity. Design is in the Robinsons’ blood”.

To make the unique collections of Carl Robinson requires complex technology and sometimes even work by hand. The production of the wallpapers involves individual embroidery, metal foil, and hand printing.

The designer creates wallpaper in collaboration with the major German manufacturer of elite wall coverings KT Exclusive, whose technologies make it possible to use a complex manufacturing process to bring the designer’s ideas to life.

1 ARCHETYPE LAMP Goodmorning Technology has developed for Luceplan a model in a functional minimalist style. The Archetype lamps are simply shaped with a soft diffused light.

2 BEHIVE LAMP The desk and bedside lamp Behive was created by Studio Aisslinger for Foscarini. The sculptural form and subdued light makes the model particularly suited to the bedroom.

3 COLIBRI FLOOR LAMP The Colibri floor lamp was designed by the Odoardo Fioravanti studio for Foscarini. A rotating lamp shade on a narrow stand makes it invisible in the interior, and the direct, but at the same time soft, light of the lamp is ideal for reading.

4 OTTO WATT DESK LAMP The head is the main part of the Otto Watt desk lamp by the designers Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto for Luceplan.

The lamp is fixed on a rotating element.

The side pieces serve as a decorative ornament, distributing at the same time the heat of the lamp and allowing it to safely rotate.

5 TUA LAMP The Tua lamp is made of a single piece of metal that serves as both the stand and lamp shade. The designer Marco Zito created the model for Foscarini.

6 YUMI FLOOR LAMP The Yumi floor lamp with spot light was designed by Shigeru Ban Architects for Fontanaarte. Its body is just 10 mm thick is extremely durable and practical.

1 URBAN BONFIRE Inspired by the flame of a bonfire, the designer Lee Young Hee has created Urban Bonfire, a modular heating system with lighting. The product generates heat through the top panel and is equipped with a light for operating the heater. With its built-in LEDs, the Urban Bonfire, if necessary, replaces a lamp. Its orange light recreates the tongues of a flame, and cylindrical panels imitate fire logs, creating the feeling of a real fire.

2 TWO IN ONE Specialists at National Taipei University of Technology and the Graduate Institute of Innovation and Design have created a compact device, Water Lock, which is both a water meter and automatic shut-off valve for bathroom taps.

The device allows you to specify the required number of litres and to leave an open tap unattended. As a result, unnecessary consumption of water is avoided. Water Lock works without energy consumption.

3 FIRE BARRIER The innovative fire-resistant soundproofing door PLANO from Porseg (Portugal) has a minimalist design, but provides maximum security. The door, which can withstand fire for an hour, is made of stainless steel, and is available in chrome or coloured versions. It also features a hidden locking device.

4 IN ONE LINE Formani Fold by Formani (Netherlands) brings together all the details of a handle in a single smooth line. The innovative design by Studio Tord Boontje creates the impression that the handle is floating on the surface of the door.

5 WATER CONTROL No one but the home owner will be able to use the LOCKO street tap. The product has been created for gardens or public spaces. Built into the tap valve is coded lock that prevents the consumption of water by strangers. The designer, Arman Emami, has effectively integrated the locking device into the ergonomic tap.

6 LIGHT NAVIGATION GO-IN lighting illuminates the main areas and darkened places in the home.

Located in a certain order, LEDs are mounted in plasterboard walls, leaving the surface virtually even. This ergonomic design project was developed by Jorge Herrera Moran for FLOS (Spain).

7 A DOOR HANDLE TO PROTECT YOUR FINGERS The designers Hou Gang, Hou Jianqin and Xie YaQi have created a handle which prevents fingers from being trapped. It is fitted with an extended rubber tip, thanks to which the door will not close if the handle does not rotate 90 degrees.

8 NOTHING SUPERFLUOUS For the LFensterCUBEflat window, with wood-aluminium profile, the designer Daniel Lehmann chose a minimalist style. The window from Lehmann Arnegg (Switzerland) is fitted flush on the inside and outside, which provides a smooth surface. The hidden fastening and smooth handle complete the ergonomic design of the rectangular window.

9 ITALIAN HANDLE The French designer Jerome Brunet has created for PBA (Italy) a door handle called Elica that can be used easily even by people with limited hand mobility. In addition, Elica’s wide flat surface with curved ends prevents accidental hooking.

10 MULTI-PURPOSE PLASTIC Benu FLOW Sheer Curtain is a new model in the Benu PET collection. For the first time, a flame retardant fabric is woven from recycled plastic bottles. The bottles are shredded into flakes, mixed with flame retardant and spun into polyester yarn. The curtain was developed by the Christian Fischbacher Co. (Switzerland) design studio, which managed to combine in the Benu FLOW curtain aesthetics, durability and safety.

ECOFRIENDLINESS AND ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENTS IN PROJECTS

BY YOUNG ARCHITECTS MosBuild Magazine continues to publish the winning projects from the 2nd MosBuild Architecture & Design Awards (MADA). This issue features projects by Diana Vatinyan (Russia), who was the winner among young architects in the category “Best Sustainable Architecture Project”, and Konrad Urbanowicz (Poland), who won the category “Best Architectural Solution for an Accessible Environment” for architectural students.

Diana Vatinyan submitted an eco-tourism project in Yerevan (Armenia). The city is famous for its spectacular scenery, fresh air and mineral water. All this attracts nature lovers and makes the Dilijan an attractive tourist centre. Unfortunately, at the moment, the city faces a shortage of hotels, a problem this project aims to address.

The site for the construction has been chosen at the entrance to the city, in a park on the shore of the river. The eco complex visually continues the outline of the cliff on which it is positioned, giving the impression

of a natural split rock. The flat roofs are covered with vegetation typical of the surrounding landscape.

The eco-complex includes a hotel, fitness centre, rest areas and spa – all under one roof. The hotel rooms are located on the second to seventh floors along the south and southwest sides of the building. The fitness centre is on the ground and first floors, and the spa centre is on the second floor. The rest areas are spread across the whole complex. The main building houses a winter garden, which occupies a joint space from the first to sixth floor. The natural microclimate of Dilijan will be recreat-

ed in a closed hall. All service and technical spaces are on the ground floor, where there are also parking spaces. The construction is expected to use only environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies.

All the work will be carried out in compliance with the environmental requirements of the region.

Such a big and multi-functional eco-project will, undoubtedly, contribute to the development of ecotourism, improving the economic situation in Dilijan.

But, most importantly, it will demonstrate to tourists the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.

Konrad Urbanowicz “BEST ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION FOR AN ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENT” among architectural students

Konrad Urbanowicz, a student from Poland, was the winner of the category “Best Architectural Solution for an Accessible Environment”. He designed an educational complex for a primary school.

The main idea of the project is the easy accessibility of any room. The entrances and seating in the classes are widened and equipped for students with disabilities.

The classroom buildings are arranged in a circle and connected by a closed gallery. At the centre is a green courtyard for games and rest during breaks and after class. This spacious and safe space will replace the traditional school corridors.

The complex comprises six classrooms, four rooms for specialised classes, a kitchen and dining area, an administrative building, a library, a hall for events and, the largest part, a sports sector with adjacent outdoor playgrounds.

All the buildings are connected to each other by a vast system of footpaths.

Due to the large number of windows not only in the walls but also in the roofs, the classrooms receive plenty of sunlight throughout the day. The scattered toy cubes bring variety to the interior of the classrooms and gallery.

Despite the fact that due to the uneven terrain the buildings are at different heights, almost all the exits to the courtyard are located on the same level. This avoids unnecessary raised areas, which is also important for children with disabilities.

Konrad Urbanowicz’s primary school project aims to provide equal opportunities and safety for young students. The layout and design of the complex transforms the school into an elaborate playground, reminding us that its users are principally children.
