q News/Entertainment Orthodox Issachar stays close to roots
COUNTLESS trips to Ethiopia have made the East African country a second home for roots singer Orthodox Issachar. His travels there inspired the song Kuch Bel. The diminutive artiste first visited Ethiopia in 1986. Because it is the home of Emperor Haile Selassie I, spiritual leader of Rastafari, it is a special place for members of that faith. “Reading the Bible a chapter a day, I take heed and realise that this is the land we as a people should return to,” said Orthodox Issachar. Produced by Sangie Davis, Kuch Bel is recorded in English and Amharic, a traditional Ethiopian language. It is a guide of sorts as it mentions the country’s transport system (Makenia) and alphabet (fidel). Kuch Bel was recorded two years ago at Tuff Gong in Kingston with guitarists Dalton Browne and Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, drummer Cliff Ellis, bass player Dale Brown and O’zoune on keyboards. A video for the song, filmed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and the town of Shashemane, has also been released. Shashemane has been home to many Jamaicans since the late 1960s. In 1948, Selassie pledged land in that region to people from the Caribbean interested in settling in Ethiopia. Most of the Jamaicans in Shashemane are members of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Orthodox Issachar, who has lived in Canada for 40 years, is part of that organisation. Born Patrick Spence in Montego Bay and raised in east Kingston, Orthodox Issachar has been recording since 2000. He has done three albums to date, all produced by Davis, a ‘Twelve Tribes’ stalwart. His previous set, Rastaman, was released in 2009. -JAMAICA OBSERVER
Buju to serve full sentence - pressured into an agreement Rosemary Duncan, coordinator of the three-member Buju Banton Defense Support Committee, says the incarcerated reggae artiste was “pressured into an agreement” to drop any further appeals. Buju Banton (given name Mark Myrie) is currently serving a mandatory 10-year sentence in a Georgia correctional facility on cocaine charges. Last Thursday, the reggae singer said he would be halting any further appeals, while the US Attorney Office announced it would be dismissing firearms charge against the singer. “The court had thrown out the gun charge twice. However, the prosecution still had the option of pursuing a new trial ... and if convicted, he would get an additional five years,” the St Lucian-born, US-based Duncan told the Jamaica Observer. Buju Banton -- who was arrested in 2009 -- was convicted in February 2011. He is scheduled to be deported to Jamaica in 2019. The support committee coordinator said the decision to discontinue the appeals came from the artiste himself. “It was his own decision, based on his own analysis. He realised that every time there is hope, the court would say something else. He said he’s done 5 1/2 years and could do 3 1/2 years more. It had nothing [to do] with legal cost, as he always paid his lawyers,” she explained.
Slated for April 15 , just in time for 420 Celebrations EP’s Featured Artists Stick Figure, Fortunate Youth and Raging Fyah Currently Touring U.S. Until End of April Dub Rockers/VP Records presents Reggae Dubs & Dabs, a seven track EP of uplifting ganja tunes, to be released April 15, 2016 just in time for the 4/20 celebrations. Dubs & Dabs brings together international reggae superstars from the United States (Stick Figure, Fortunate Youth, Soul Rebel Project, The Movement, The Green, Bobby Hustle) Europe (Alborosie) and The Caribbean (Mystic Revealers Collie Buddz, Chronixx, Raging Fyah, Marlon Asher), who all support global legalization of cannabis. The set opens with Italian-born reggae star Alborosie’s “420 Fly” feat. Sugus on this EDM reggae banger professing their love for cannabis. The Golden state represents throughout the collection with anthems from Fortunate Youth and Stick Figure. Fortunate Youth rallies Hawaiian band The Green and Trinidadian reggae artist Marlon Asher on “Pass The Herb,” while Stick Figure brings in Bermudian reggae star Collie Buddz on “Smokin’ Love.”
East Coast rockers Soul Rebel Project enjoy a “Good Burn” on their superb jam, while South Carolina reggae band The Movement talks about their favorite past time with Collie Buddz and Bobby Hustle in “Habit 2016.” Kingston’s rising reggae band Raging Fyah delivers straight “Raggamuffin” style, expressing their preference for steaming chalice and natty dreadlocks, on the hard hitting track off their upcoming studio album Everlasting (Dub Rockers / May 27). Jamaican heritage band Mystic Revealers teams up with one of reggae’s new leaders Chronixx for a powerful anthem advocating for the worldwide legal use of the plant. Chronixx and Raging Fyah both got their start at Mystic Revealer’s frontman Billy Mystic’s Jamnesia. This surf, skate and music hub located on the coast of Bull Bay (just miles away from Kingston) became the local hang-out spot for these young “reggae revival” artists to cultivate their sound. Currently, EP’s featured artists Raging Fyah, Stick Figure and Fortunate Youth are on the road together for a 30-city U.S. tour until the end of April. Track listing: 1. 420 Fly - Alborosie feat. JO MERSA MARLEY, BOB MARLEY’S GRANDSON & STEPHEN MARLEY’S SON, RELEASES FIRST SONG IN OVER A YEAR “BURN IT DOWN” FEAT. YOHAN MARLEY The Unapologetic Track Rallies for Social Change and Justice. Jo Mersa Supports UB40 on Summer 2016 Tour.
The entertainer’s legal team comprises Harvard professor Charles Ogletree and Max Stern. In January, Ogletree told the Observer he would be pulling out all the stops to free his client.“We will be fighting for Buju Banton’s freedom. We will present our arguments for a reversal of his conviction to the entire court in an en banc hearing later this spring,” he said.
Jo Mersa Marley, Bob Marley’s grandson and Stephen Marley’s son, carries the torch for this generation on “Burn It Down,” his first single for 2016 featuring vocals from his brother Yohan Marley.
Duncan, who said the support group was formed in 2011 to champion Buju Banton’s cause, said despite the decision, he remains positive.“I spoke with him today. He’s the same person, in terms of spirit. He’s writing great music for his fans,” she said.
From the South Carolina church burning and Trayvon Martin’s murder in the United States to the innocent lives of his friends taken by the police in Jamaica, Jo’s call-to-action anthem touches on topics of racial violence and tension plaguing our globe and our need for social change.
Days after his 2011 conviction, Buju Banton won a Grammy Award for his album Before Dawn. His other albums include ‘Til Shiloh (1995), Inna Heights (1997) and Unchained Spirit (2000).

Hair Piece Written By: Ebony Payne-English
My hair is an enchanted garden A bouquet of trinkets and cowrie shells An outcast spell It is black girl magic tucked intently beneath gele (gaylay) It is the freeway that forms down my back It adorns my crown chakra It is the saga that continues a tribal tradition Between me and ancestral kin It tends to be an ice breaker It knows no chill Can and will spark hours of conversation The next time you’re on vacation to Napa Give them some straightening Train them on tracks, corn rows and black joy Laugh loud and infectiously Until you and yours sisters are quarantined Sip your wine Find a good attorney Make them pay homage to your journey My roots are relearning their original curl pattern They are taut and secure as a mountain climbers rope And when I let them loose All that’s on my mind to do is hope, pray and meditate My hair hangs hugging my shoulders like a safety net It spreads long and wide across my spine Just as the Nile slithers up North Africa
The ‘Rasta-Rapunzel’: Florida woman with the world’s longest dreadlocks finds love with a hairdress - Asha Mandela’s hair is 55 feet long and weighs a staggering 42 pounds - The 50-year-old business woman found love with a Kenyan Rastafarian - Husband Emmanuel Chege spends two days a week treating Asha’s hair - He said he now wants to get the world record for a man’s dreadlocks The woman with the world’s longest dreadlocks has found love with a hair stylist whose massive dreadlocks rival her own. Real-life ‘Rasta-Rapunzel’, Asha Mandela, has locks that measure a lengthy 55ft - longer than a London bus. Now the 50-year-old, from Florida, has found a match made in heaven with new husband, Emmanuel Chege, a qualified hair stylist from Kenya. The smitten couple mutually worship each other’s bountiful barnets and say that their beautifully maintained dreadlocks are their crowning glory. Asha said: ‘It’s really added spice in the bedroom and it does not get in the way of anything at all. There are times when my hair will be on the bed with us and we can use it for whatever or we put it on the floor if we want it out of the way.’ Asha and Emmanuel met online three years ago after he was struck by pictures of her famous dreadlocks on hair websites. He decided to contact Asha, and when she visited Kenya on business eight months later, the chemistry between them was undeniable. And after adoring Asha’s locks from a far, Emmanuel was eager to get his hands on her famous tresses. He said: ‘It was so amazing to see all this amount of hair. It was more than in my imagination. ‘At first I thought maybe her locks were almost to her knees or to the ground, but the first glance when I saw her hair, it was so long, so it was so amazing and her beauty was so amazing too.’ A whirlwind romance followed, and within eight months of meeting, Asha and Emmanuel were married in America. Now, almost two years later, Asha has entrusted the care of her precious dreads solely to Emmanuel.Emmanuel, who has worked as a hair stylist for 15 years, spends his days lovingly grooming Asha’s three-stone dreadlocks. They take two days to wash and dry and require fulltime care and Emmanuel devotes countless hours to their upkeep. He is also growing his own dreadlocks and hopes to become the male record holder in the future. Asha said: ‘My husband helps me with everything with my hair. Asha often carries her hair in a handbag to prevent it trailing along the floor, but when she wears it loose the couple receive a lot of attention. Asha said: ‘The reaction is always a Kodak moment, it’s always a conversation piece, especially when it’s out. They always want to take pictures. ‘The reaction is always really positive, I’ve rarely had any negatives.’ Asha, who owns her own hair product business, was told by doctors her dreadlocks would paralyse her if she kept on growing them as the weight of her hair is affecting her back. Now Emmanuel is training her at the gym to strengthen her back muscles and Asha has already lost 65lbs. But although Asha admits her hair can be a hindrance at time, the couple says the positives far outweigh the negatives - especially in the bedroom. Emmanuel said: ‘In some instance maybe it adds up to some spices you know in our love life. ‘There are some days she will sleep on the bed and put it on the ground, some days she will feel like letting it sleep on the bed with her so sometimes you might feel like it is three of us in the bed.’ The couple have talked about having children in the future, and hope their child will continue their dreadlocks legacy. Asha said: ‘If we are blessed with children, no comb is going to go on their head. ‘There will be locks straight from birth, however long that takes to come in.‘If we going to be lucky enough to be blessed with a child, it’s going to be a cute little Rasta baby.’
A Trinidadian man, Bajan man, and a Jamaican man went for a round of golf and their wives went along as caddies. While walking around the course the Trinidadian wife caught her foot in a rabbit hole, tripped, and fell. Her skirt was over her head revealing that she wasn’t wearing any panties. The Trinidadian man angrily demanded to know why she wasn’t wearing any underwear. “Well, dahlin,” she explained, “you give me so little money that I hav’ to make sacrifices. Usually nobody does notice.” The Trinidadian man pulls $100 out of his pocket. “Tek dis nah, go Victoria Secrets and buy yourself some underwear” Two holes further along the Bajan wife caught her foot on a molehill, tripped and fell. Her skirt was up over her head revealing that she wasn’t wearing any panties either! The Bajan man, obviously upset, asked his wife why she isn’t wearing underwear. “Well, honey,” she explained, “you give me so little money I cahn afford to buy any underwear.” The Bajan man pulls $20 out of his pocket. “Cho, go a K-mart an’ buy some draws.” Three holes further on, the Jamaican man’s wife caught her foot on an exposed root, tripped and landed with her skirt over her head revealing that she too wasn’t wearing any panties. Her explanation to her vex husband was the same as the others. The Jamaican man put his hand into his pocket and said, “Here’s a comb. The least you could do is to keep it neat.”
Perfume vs. Calaloo An old Jamaican lady is in an elevator in a high rise apartment building in New York, going to visit some relatives. A beautiful young woman gets in smelling like very expensive perfume. She turns up her nose at the old woman and says arrogantly, “Giorgio, Beverly Hills, $120.00 an ounce.” The old lady with a deadpan expression says nothing. Another young, beautiful, expensive-smelling woman enters the lift, turns, looks down her long pointed nose at the old lady and says “Chanel No.5, Paris, $200.00 an ounce” The lift is now filled with the aroma of the magnificent scents of the combined perfumes. One floor later, as the Jamaican lady approaches her destination, she quietly eases out a long silent fart, which quickly overpowers the combined expensive perfumes and leaves the other two women with watery eyes. As she steps out of the elevator, she turns and says “Calaloo, Jamaica, $40 a bunch”

taking care of it and I’ve got totally lazy. ‘He will massage my scalp, groom my hair or twist or wash it. He does a really good job of taking care of it so that’s a plus.’ Despite dedicating their lives to maintaining their locks, Asha and Emmanuel insist that their efforts are not a pursuit of vanity. Emmanuel said: The purpose of me having locks is spiritual. I’m a Rastafarian, and locks symbolizes a lot. ‘I gives me a lot of positive energy and a lot of positive vibration - it’s like my antennas to the spiritual world. ‘It’s part of my creation and it’s part of my body.’
Hoping to pick her up, he leaned towards her and said, “Love to fly and it shows?” She gave him a blank, confused stare and he immediately thought to himself, ooh shit, she doesn’t work for Delta. A few seconds later, another slogan popped into his head. He leaned towards her again, “Something special in the air?” She gave him the same confused looked. He mentally kicked himself, and scratched American Airlines off the list. Next he tried, “I would really love to fly your friendly skies?” This time the woman barked at him “Man, what de bloodclatt u want?” The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair, “Ahhh, Air Jamaica”. Jo, who co-produced “Burn It Down” with his father Stephen Marley and Llamar “ Riff Raff” Brown, unveiled a snippet of the track last week, which had the internet buzzing. “Carlton Grant Jr. a.k.a. Carlyle (Spragga Benz’s son) and a good friend of mine Sonico were both innocently gunned down in Jamaica by the police within two years apart. Then two years later in 2012, Trayvon Martin’s murder happened. It hit home to me. The potential they all had was taken away from them, for no reason. We are humans whom all have a purpose. My people and my generation are fed up. From my grandfather, grandmother, Martin Luther King Jr. and many people before us to the young activists today like Ashley Yates and Tory Russell, we will fight for justice. Burn out this wickedness and step outta Babylon,” Jo proclaims. Jo will take his message on the road. This summer, he will be supporting with the multi-platinum selling band UB40 on their cross country U.S. tour. Now, fans can listen to the song in its entirety: https://soundcloud.com/ghettoyouthscrew/jo-mersa-marley-burn-it-down-feat-yohan-marley Jo Mersa Marley As the eldest son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley, Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley was born in Kingston, Jamaica on March 12, 1991 and moved to Miami at age 11. Jo grew up surrounded by music. By the time he was four years old, Jo was appearing onstage alongside his father, his uncle Ziggy and aunts Cedella and Sharon (a.k.a. Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers) and their children as part of the group’s rousing concert finales with Jo often taking the mic and chanting the lyrics to the Melody Makers’ biggest songs. He keenly observed his father and his uncle Damian as they created music in Stephen’s Lion’s Den studio in Miami. Back then school was the priority for Jo; traveling with Ziggy and the Melody Makers was reserved for school breaks and summer vacations, yet those experiences provided first hand opportunities for Jo to expand his musical aspirations beyond the performance stage. He started making beats when he was about 11 and then began focusing on his songwriting and vocal delivery. He released his debut EP Comfortable in June 2014 on Ghetto Youths International, which spanned pop, hip hop, EDM and dancehall influences while showcasing his deft vocals, clever songwriting and flourishing production skiills. In support of EP, Jo Mersa has landed national coverage in Rolling Stone, PEOPLE, VIBE, Complex, The FADER and toured extensively in U.S. and Europe alongside acts like Stephen “Ragga” Marley, Slightly Stoopid and more. He joins UB40 this summer on tour and gears up for his first full-length debut. 2016 TOUR DATES w/ UB40: Jul 27 @ The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA Jul 29 @ Robert Z. Biography – WARRIOR KING Like a bolt of lightning from the sky, Rasta messenger Warrior King has burst upon the scene, utilizing his gift of song to spread Jah truth throughout the world. Warrior King was born on the 27th of July, 1979, in Kingston’s Jubilee Hospital, soon moving to Clarendon and then settling in the growing city of Portmore at age eleven. “From birth I’ve always loved music, but it was not until I attended high school at the age of thirteen that I thought about it as something I could do myself,” Warrior King explains. “At that time I followed Bounty Killer’s style, but then my friends said “You have the potential. You have the talent.’ From there I started increasing my own thing, and with encouragement from my peers and divine inspiration, the music started to flow.”
Warrior King’s debut single, “Virtuous Woman,” was an international smash hit, its righteous lyrics prompting the Jamaica Observer to declare the singer “one of the artistes who has made a difference.” Since his auspicious beginning, Warrior King’s compositions have consistently charted not only in his native Jamaica, but throughout the entire Caribbean, New York, California, London, Tokyo, and beyond. “A Friend Indeed” received heavy rotation in Jamaica, while “Jah Is Always There” was a summer smash on Atlanta’s More Fire chart. The inclusion of “Never Go Where Pagans Go” on VP Records’ compilation set “Reggae Gold” further raised the artist’s pubic persona. Tracks like “Virtuous Woman,” “Can’t Get Me Down” and other compositions have built the foundation of Warrior King’s reputation. Warrior King has now released four internationally acclaimed albums, entitled “Virtuous Woman, Hold the Faith, Love is in the Air, Tell Me How Me Sound”.

Like many successful Jamaican entertainers, Warrior King gained his earliest stage experience in talent shows. “I started out with school concerts at first,” he says. “At the time when I just came into music, I used to do some combinations with a youth named “Likkle Blacks” Marlon Stewart. We used to do Tastee’s Talent Shows, etc so we could really start getting exposure and gain experience. When he first started out, Warrior King chatted in a hardcore deejay style like his original hero and mentor, Bounty Killer.
