Nakia has a range of disguises throughout “Black Panther” that make her particularly fascinating. “We see her in Nigeria in the beginning with ripped jeans; we see her at the Warrior Falls and she wears her River tribe costume; we see her in the CIA with leather pants and jean jacket; we see her in a casino and she portrays an African princess in a long gown. We covered the layers of women with their toughness and softness at the same time,” said Carter.

‘Black Panther’: How Costume Designer Ruth Carter Created a Colorful Pageantry of Afrofuturism t’s not too early to talk about a potential Oscar nomination next year for Ruth Carter. Her colorful costume designs for “Black Panther” represent a diverse celebration of African cultures — past and present — and take the Marvel superhero genre to a whole new aesthetic realm. Indeed, the way Carter mixes a panoply of tribal influences and Afropunk for the fictional Wakanda makes a beautiful and positive fashion statement. “Ryan Coogler and I discussed representing Africa in a beautiful way,” said Carter (Oscar-nominated for “Amistad” and “Malcom X”). “We had meetings about King T’Challa [Chadwick Boseman] needing to look magnificent. This was a place where people come together and represent their various tribal cultures, and they can wear a lot of traditional clothes. But we were very specific about not making it look like a documentary or anthropological.”

Tribal Eye Candy

The costume design was especially a feast for the eyes during T’Challa’s coronation ceremony, drawing on traditional tribal garments. It was a rich coming together of the five tribes (River, Merchant, Mining, Border, and Mountain). “During that scene, I seized the opportunity to represent the Tuareg as our Merchant tribe and wrap glorious turbans and accentuate them with lots of medals,” Carter said. “And then bring in all the beautiful tones of green for the River tribe and natural earth tones and leaves. It’s as majestic as the Panther suit.” Speaking of which, Carter’s aha moment for the Panther suit occurred when she learned that it has come to represent a habit because of its religious connotations. It was then that she came up with the idea of a triangle. “I infused a triangle pattern because, in a lot of African art you see throughout the continent, there is this sacred geometry. It’s a mystery what it actually means, but there is an equality inherent there, and mixing that with the Wakanda language that runs along the suit, provided a tribal look. In closeup or when T’Challa walks throughout the kingdom, it feels very noble.”

Dressing for Action

Dressing for the action sequence in the Korean Casino was multi-layered as well. In fact, it was Koogler’s idea to introduce T’Challa, Nakia, and Okoye in black, green, and red, signifying Black Nationalism. “For T’Challa’s dinner jacket that had the magical fabric that had a little gloss and sheen to it,” said Carter. “When I look at that fabric and how it photographed, it really feels like Panther fabric, but really is in context to the rest of the environment, which I worked out with [production designer] Hannah Beachler. Also, Nakia’s green dress and Okoye’s crimson dress represented their River tribe Dora connections. “It took a lot of R&D to develop that [crimson] dress because she had to perform in so many ways,” added Carter. “And Hannah thought we could do traditional Hambac on the servers. That was kind of like the in thing for kids to wear traditional clothes instead of making them your classic waitresses with little miniskirts and cute tops.”

Black Panther Face-Off

The most complex relationship, though, occurs between T’Challa and rival N’Jadaka/Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who challenges him as ruler of Wakanda. His wardrobe allowed Carter to incorporate an integral African-American dimension that ties it all together. “There are so many relationships, even among men, that are difficult, and metaphors about Africa and the African-American experience,” Carter said. “He represents urban America and wears balmain boots and drop crotch pants and jean jacket with shearling,” added Carter. “Part of his past is military with tactical vest, pants, and jacket. There’s so much Americana in his costume and it really does play him opposite of T’Challa. And they both end up wearing a Panther suit in the end. You can really latch onto any relationship: Biblical, mythological, primal.” (Continued on page 16)

Female Empowermen

Without a doubt, the force of Wakanda is undeniably female, as King T’Challa surrounds himself with powerful women, and Carter enjoyed dreaming up their wardrobes. They consist of Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), adviser on the legacy of his father; Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), his former lover, a War Dog, an undercover spy who’s part of the River tribe; Okoye (Danai Gurira), the leader of the Dora Milaje, the all-female special forces; and Shuri (Letitia Wright), his teenage sister and head of tech. All those layers of their relationships are represented in the costumes,” Carter said. “Mother/Queen, General/Girlfriend, Spy/Ex-Girlfriend, Sister/Genius. I think, in general, there’s a sense of royalty and esteem with the female uniforms. They have no past and we made them with a specific story in mind. It loops you into Wakanda. They are hand-crafted by the Merchant tribe or some other faction that only makes Dora red uniforms.”

Damian Marley takes his 8-year-old son Elijah Marley on a musical journey in his new video “Living It Up” starting from where Bob Marley grew up. If you have any doubts that Damian Marley is one of the greatest of all-time in the history of dancehall, then after listening to his Grammywinning album Stony Hill you will erase all doubts. The album is a masterpiece and Jr. Gong has been slowly releasing visuals from the project with “Living It Up” being the latest. Damian Marley and his son went to the heart of the ghetto in Trenchtown where Bob Marley grew while teaching his son about his ancestry and how far he himself is coming from to reach the top of the music world.

Parts of the video was shot at the Castle in Port Antonio while the ending was shot in Stony Hill where Gong himself grew up. “Trenchtown have a grandson / Growin’ up to be somebody / Gong to the zilly / Yo me flow phenomenally / I am the kind of thing that doesn’t happen normally / I’m a one in a zillion / Yo dawg, if you want some,” Jr. Gong deejays. Damian Marley told Billboard that it was his idea to include his son in the video. “It was actually my idea to include in the video,” he said. “We were playing around with some different ideas to bring this story to life and with or without the video, I always wanted to bring my son to Kingston. I wanted to bring him and document it so it can be a part of the video because it works with the concept of the song. The song is very personal and I just wanted to document my personal history for him because he was saying to me that things are going to great and he can’t wait to show his kids so now that history is documented.”

REGGAE ARTISTE I ATOM is generating a huge buzz with her new collaboration single, ‘Ganja Call’, featuring dancehall star Capleton which stresses the medicinal qualities and the healing powers of the marijuana plant. The song has been blowing up FM radio since its release on the Virtuous Voice Production label, on January 7th this year. “I did my version of the song first and I went to him to do a collaboration and he listened to the riddim and liked it, and he wrote and recorded his verse to the riddim same time. It was a spiritual connection (between she and Capleton), I just prayed about it and went up to David House to ask him to collaborate with me on the ganja song. But I didn’t believe it would happen because he is a veteran and his expectation is very high. So when I hear it on the radio, I feel overjoyed and blessed that this collaboration is a reality,” I Atom said. “The marijuana plant is very powerful and this song is not only to entertain and educate the public about the many medicinal uses of this great plant,” she said.

She thanked Capleton for his mentorship and guidance in the music industry. “I appreciate this collaboration song so much. Capleton is a person who look up to for advice and am so grateful for what he did. I consider myself blessed and highly favoured to have this great father-daughter relationship with King Shango,” the artiste whose real name is Careen Hanchard, said. Treats Arthritis One of the most celebrated uses of pineapple in terms of health is its ability to reduce the inflammation

of joints and muscles, particularly those associated with arthritis, a debilitating disease that affects millions of people around the world. Pineapple contains a relatively rare proteolytic enzyme called bromelain, which is primarily associated with breaking down of complex proteins and has serious anti-inflammatory effects. Bromelain is also positively correlated with reducing the signs and symptoms of arthritis in many.

Boosts Immunity A single serving of pineapple has more than 130% of the daily requirement of vitamin C for human

beings, making it one of the richest and most delicious sources of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C helps in reducing illnesses and boosting the immune system by stimulating the activity of white blood cells and acting as an antioxidant to defend against the harmful effects of free radicals. Free radicals are dangerous byproducts of cellular metabolism that can damage various organ systems and disrupt function, as well as cause healthy cells to mutate into cancerous ones. The vitamin C content of pineapple defends against this.

Speeds-up Wound Healing One of the commonly overlooked benefits of vitamin C is its essential role in creating

collagen. This is partly the reason why it is seen as a healing vitamin because collagen is the essential protein base of blood vessel walls, skin, organs, and bones. High vitamin C content in pineapple helps you heal wounds and injuries quickly, along with defending your body against infections and illnesses.

Prevents Cancer Pineapple has been directly related to preventing cancers of the mouth, throat, and breast, as it is rich in

various antioxidants, including vitamin A, beta carotene, bromelain, various flavonoid compounds, and high levels of manganese. Manganese is an important cofactor of superoxide dismutase, an extremely potent free radical scavenger that has been associated with a number of different cancers.

Aids Digestion Eating pineapple regularly can protect you from a vast amount of health conditions, including constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, atherosclerosis, and blood clotting, as well as high blood pressure. Pineapple, rich in fiber, promotes the passage of food through the digestive tract at a normal rate and stimulates the release of gastric and digestive juices to help food dissolve. It also bulks up the loose stool, which helps in treating diarrhea and IBS. Furthermore, bromelain in pineapple stimulates protein digestion, reduces gut inflammation, and therefore, treats digestive diseases. Treats Cough and Cold Pineapple is rich in both bromelain and vitamin C, therefore eating pineapple helps in preventing and treating respiratory illnesses, and eliminating phlegm and mucus from your body if you’ve already contracted an illness or infection. The immune system boosting property of vitamin C is well known, but that special enzyme, bromelain, is also connected with the reduction of phlegm and mucus build up in the respiratory tracts and sinus cavities. Improves Bone Health Although pineapple is not famous for having strong calcium content, which most people immediately associate with bone health, it does have an impressive amount of manganese. Manganese is another trace mineral essential for the strengthening of bones, as well as its growth and repair. It is the most prominent mineral in pineapple, and a single serving can provide you with more than 70% of your daily requirement of this mineral.

Back in the days, a yardie wnet to England and was boarding one of th edouble decker buses. Downstairs was full so the conductor sent him to the upstairs. f Island Humour

Pineapple is a storehouse of several health benefits due to its wealth of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, including potassium, copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, beta-carotene, thiamin, vitamin B6, and folate, as well as soluble and insoluble fiber, and bromelain.

A totally naked woman rushed into a taxi. The taxi driver turned and stared at her so keenly. The woman asked the taxi driver, “Why yuh a stare pon mi suh, a fuss yuh a si woman naked?” The taxi driver replied, “No but mi just a wonda a weh yuh have mi money.”

PASS OUT

A man walked into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Trinidad and “passed out” on the floor. People gathered around to help him by fanning and doing everything they could to help him regain consciousness. Someone peeled an orange and started squeezing the juice into his mouth, whereupon the man suddenly came back to life, pushed the person away and yelled, “if ah did want orange, ah woulda fall down in de market.”

That Fine Will Now Be $500 The Man Shout Fuck Man! The Judge Said $1000,The Man Began To Search His Pocket,The Judge Said What Are You Looking For Sir? The Man Looked Up And Said “Ah Making Sure Ah Have Enough Money To Tell yuh bout Ur Mother Cunt”

OLD MAN STARE

An old man sitting at the mall watched a teenager intently. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange and blue. The old man kept staring at him. When the teenager was tired of being stared at, he sarcastically asked, Whats the matter, old man? Never did anyting wild in your life?” The old man did not even wink an eye when he responded,”Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son.”

Improves Oral Health Along with the antioxidant compounds that

protect against oral cancer, pineapple also has astringent properties, which strengthen gums and teeth. Astringent agents help to tighten up tissues and tone the body so that tooth loss, hair loss, and muscle weakness or skin loosening do not occur. Pineapple is a very powerful astringent and is often prescribed as a natural remedy to fix the loosening of teeth or for the retraction of gums.

REGGAE SONGSTRESS ETANA’S NEW ALBUM REGGAE FOREVER ENTERS TOP 5 ON BILLBOARD REGGAE ALBUM CHART

she planned to read for a master’s degree in agriculture, and then to pursue a job as an agricultural engineer. But the music bug bit her.

2 weeks since its initial March 8th release on International Women’s Day, global reggae star Etana’s critically acclaimed 5th studio album Reggae Forever earned the “Greatest Gainer” honor by jumping 5 spots to #5 on this week’s U.S. Billboard Reggae Album Chart.

She was born in the Nine Miles area of St. Ann. As a teenager, she attended Ferncourt High in St. Ann before matriculating to the College of Agricultural Science and Education where she read for a degree in agricultural science. She did an internship at Rural Agricultural Development Authority and three months later, landed a job at the Ministry of Agriculture before divine intervention set her on the path to pursue a music career as a gospel and cultural reggae artiste.

Etana, often referred to affectionately by her fans as The Strong One, said humbly of the achievement, “My first independent project, Reggae Forever, is growing. It’s distributed by Tad’s Records. If you’ve gotten the album already, thank you for purchasing. Perfect love to everyone. I am because you are.”

“I have a lot of work to do in 2018 and beyond,” she said.

“Dread” Locks Roots

The Hon. Neville ORiley Livingston (Bunny Wailer) in his reggae classic Rastaman said, “…That’s the strangest man I’ve seen, that’s because he’s a Rastaman; having the mark of a Nazarene…” The connection between Biblical justification and the dread locks worn by the Great Ras Tafari Nation is quite profound. Oftentimes the single most accredited reason for wearing of dread locks is the Nazarene vow extracted from the Book of Numbers 6:5, KJV. Which states that “All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow”. The Old Testament also recounts the tale of Sampson and Delilah in which a man’s potency is directly linked to ‘the seven locks on his head’ and according to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have ‘hair like snakes’ Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too. In the West, the Nazarene is most widely known for developing Dreadlocks. In the East, Yogis, Gyanis, and Tapasvis of all sects are the most famous bearers of Dreadlocks. The history of dreadlocks predates these biblical accounts by thousands of years however. Spiritualists of all faiths and backgrounds incorporate into their paths a disregard for physical appearances and vanity. And so, throughout the world, such seekers often cease to comb, cut, or otherwise dress their hair: This is how “dreadlocks” are born in Ancient Ithiopia. As a matter of fact there is absolutely no connection with the biblical account regarding dreadlocks and the Kush, Kemit, Massi, or Oromo of Ancient Ithiopia that is the basis for Ras Tafari locks. Another misconception is that the dreadlocks that are associated most closely with the RasTafari Nation originated in India. Whereas the Semitic people of West Asia; Indo-European people of Europe and South Asia; the Turkic people of Anatolia and Central Asia; the ancient Spartan warriors of Greece, the Sufi malangs and fakirs of Pakistan; the Sufi Rafaees; and the Sadhus of India and Nepal all wore dreadlocks, And whereas the Hindu deity Shiva and his followers were described in the scriptures as wearing “Jataa”, meaning “twisted locks of hair”. None of these sects can be called original. Several ascetic groups within various major religions have at times worn their hair in locks, including the monks of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Nazirites of Judaism, Qalandari Sufi’s, the Sadhus of Hinduism, and the Dervishes of Islam, among others. The very earliest Christians also may have worn this hairstyle. Particularly noteworthy are descriptions of James the Just, first Bishop of Jerusalem, who wore them to his ankles. Pre-Columbian Aztec priests were described in Aztec codices (including the Durán Codex, the Codex Tudela and the Codex Mendoza) as wearing their hair untouched, allowing it to grow long and matted. In Senegal, the Baye Fall, followers of the Mouride movement, a sect of Islam founded in 1887 by Shaykh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke, are famous for growing locks and wearing multicolored gowns. It’s important to note that warriors among the Fulani, Wolof and Serer in Mauritania, and Mandinka in Mali and Niger were also known to have dreadlocks when old and cornrows when young for centuries. Maasai men found in the regions of northern Kenya claim that they have been wearing dreadlocks for as long as they have survived. According to their oral history, the Maasai originated from the lower Nile valley north of Lake Turkana (Northwest Kenya) and began migrating south around the 15th century, arriving in a long trunk of land stretching from what is now northern Kenya between the 17th and late

In Late December 2009, Banton was arrested for drug trafficking, according to reports Banton allegedly tried giving out money for cocaine from an undercover officer in Miami in the United States of America. After many years behind bars, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has announced the date of his release which is on December 8, 2018 instead of the earlier announced date of February 2019. This news has brought Joy to all the people in Kingston Town in Jamaica where he was born and to all those who love reggae music. The former manager of the Grammy award winner, ‘Donovan Germain’ said “Buju Banton is one of Jamaica’s most popular entertainers ever”, He also believes his release will make things new because he is someone who never gives up until he achieves what he wanted. “Him jus’ need to come out with another good album and introduce himself to a new generation of fans. Once him do a good album, things should get back to normal,” said Germain. He revealed that even in jail, the artiste has received his Master’s degree in Music Business Management from New York University. Buju told reporters, “I can do anything I put my mind to; you know that. People who know me know that I am very determined and will achieve my goals despite hardships. I will not allow the system to conquer me.” ‘Til Shiloh, Buju Banton’s 1995 album, is regarded by critics as one of reggae’s finest. It contains the songs Shiloh, Untold Stories, Murderer and Not An Easy Road. The album heard him taking a more spiritual direction and finding Rastafari. The 1997 followup, Inna Heights, followed a similar path. Germain who has also produced hits by Buju compatriots Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths and Wayne Wonder, notes that because Buju has an “excellent catalog”, his music is still fresh. “Yuh still hear his songs at every stage show an’ dance. The people love him an’ that doesn’t hurt.” Buju Banton, who turned 44 on July 15, won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2011 with Before The Dawn.

Buju Banton To Perform In Jamaica Before Post-Prison Trinidad Show Buju Banton will be performing in Jamaica before his planned performance in Trinidad and Tobago next year. Earlier this week a Trinidadian promoter announced that he booked the reggae legend for his very first show after leaving prison at the end of this year. While the Grammy-winning singer will indeed be performing in the Twin Island Republic, it certainly will not be his first show. A rep for Buju Banton confirmed with Urban Islandz on Tuesday that his team is currently in negotiations with a Jamaican promoter to host his first post-prison concert. “He wants to perform for his fans at home before going anywhere else so some big announcement will be coming out soon,” a representative for the singer told us in an email. “The show in Trinidad will happen also but I think the promoter jumped the gun in announcing that that will be his first show after leaving prison. The fans at home have been relentless in their support for Buju from the beginning and they never waiver in their support so we putting on something special for them.” Buju Banton’s manager Donovan Germain also confirmed the news about the Trinidad concert but declined to comment on the one planned for Jamaica since they’re currently in negotiations. He also added that the team has been getting calls from promoters all over the world wanting to book the reggae singer. “We getting calls from Africa, Europe, Central America, and even as far as Australia and Japan,” he said. Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie, was sentenced to ten years in prison for drug trafficking. His release date is set for December 8th, 2018, which means he could be performing in Jamaica for Christmas. Buju will be deported to Jamaica following his release from a Georgia prison. Will you be attending the Gargamel’s first post-prison concert?

LOC IT UP (Continued from page 20 18th century. Even today, Maasai men can be found donning their dreadlocks, with a tint of red color from the soil. Within the Great Ras Tafari nation dreadlocks reflects spiritual convictions, a political statement and a manifestation of ethnic pride. Ras Tafari traditions hold that bodily, mental and spiritual energies mainly exit the body through the top of the head and the hair. Ras Tafari conviction is that, if the hair is knotted, the energy remains within the hair and the body, keeping a person more strong and healthy. Dreadlocks are therefore more than just a symbolic statement of disregard for physical appearance. It’s a magnification of a means to detach them from physical vanity and aid them in the development of bodily strength and supernatural mental and spiritual powers. According to the ancient tradition, dreadlocks express a spiritual significance, which implies the wearer has special relations with spirits, is an immortal traveler between two worlds and the master over fire: In various cultures what are known as shamans, spiritual men or women who serve and speak to spirits or deities, often wear locks. In Benin the Yoruba priests of Olokun, the Orisha of the deep ocean, wear locks. Another group is the Turkana people of Kenya. Kinky hair, like that beautiful cloud, is not really kinky. Kinky hair is actually coily. That’s right coily. Each little hair is practically by way of being a perfect circle. Now these millions of coils on your head are all jumbled up, coiling around each other. That’s why it hurts you to comb your hair. You’re pulling in one direction, the coils often pulling in numerous other directions. But- and this is the main thing – while the coils are doing that, they are also forming air pockets. Now air pockets do several things. One, they keep your head warm in the winter. Two they keep your head cool in the summer. And three, they protect you from concussions by absorbing shock blows to the head. Therefore, kinky hair is certainly more useful than straight hair. It is obviously advanced hair. I mean the evolutionary wheel had to take a couple of wrong turnas before it come up with kinky hair. RasTafari however is entirely separate and unique. RasTafari was re-born in the 1930 when Negus Tafari was crowned Emperor Haile Sellassie 1st of Ethiopia. When the Emperor was living in Bath, England during the invasion and occupation of Ethiopia by the fascist forces of Italy, Ethiopian guerrilla warriors swore not to cut their hair until the Emperor was reinstated to the Ancient Throne of Kush. Locks on a Ras Tafari’s head are symbolic of the Lion of Judah as it was with the warriors and Batawe of Ethiopia, The dreadlocks one endure fire, the dreadlocks one endure poison of Babylon, and the dreadlocks one endure both worlds. The dreadlocks one is said to gaze full on heaven, the dreadlocks one is said to be that light ... Of, mere mortals, only the physical bodies do you behold. ...For him has the Noble of life churned and pounded the unbendable, the dreadlocks one, in H.I.M. Haile Sellassie 1st company; drank from the immortal cup. The first known examples of dreadlocks date back to Kush and the Horn of Africa and are the root of Ras Tafari consciousness. In ancient Egypt examples of Egyptians wearing locked hairstyles and wigs have appeared on bas-reliefs, statuary and other artifacts. Mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with locks, as well as locked wigs, have also been recovered from archaeological sites. It is known that many Pharaohs had locked hair, and on Tutankhamen’s mummy, dreadlocks can still be found intact. DARC must make a comment on one thing. You have probably heard this before, and we are not trying to beat a dead horse. DARC knows that we are all members of the human family, and as such we can choose to adopt for ourselves what we want from other cultures. H.I.M. Emperor Haile Sellassie teaches that, “This world was not created piecemeal. Africa was born no later and no earlier than any other geographical area on this globe. Africans, no more and no less than other men, possess all human attributes, talents and deficiencies, virtues and faults.” Nevertheless in regards to the history of locks it should be made known that the process of cultivating locks in the manner commonly known as dreadlocks is something that was started and developed in TO BE CONITNUED IN NEXT ISSUE OF YARDVIBEZ

Africa, by black people - period. Was it used later in other cultures? Yes. But as you well know, Africa is the cradle of civilization on this planet, and since we also know locks have been around since the beginning of human history, because that history started in Africa it stands to reason that the locking of the human hair originated there as well. Add to that the fact that Black hair texture is the most conducive to the locking process, and one can easily deduce its origin. The reason why we are elaborating on this is not to say that no one else but African should be wearing locks. Rather, DARC find it troubling that modern man always try to minimalize the impact that Ithiopia culture has had on the world throughout history. Oftentimes as soon as something that was inspired, cultivated, and developed by Ithiopia becomes desirable; it is immediately neutralized, in order to make it “OK” for other people to adopt it without having to give thanks and proper credit to the culture that fathered it. If one didn’t know any better, one would think that Africa never contributed anything to world civilization except slavery and negativity, and that everything good in the world came from the wisdom of the Asians and Europeans, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. We, as Ithiopia’s people, are being systematically erased from the history of the world. Originally, dreadlocks were the mark of spiritual status. Priests of diverse Deities were required, at least for a specific period of time, to have dreadlocks. For example, priests of Deities that are involved in the healing of the body and with procreation, such as Dogon, Wsr, Heru, Theouris and Sekhmet, are required to have dreadlocks. There is a period of seven to thirteen years that a priest of these Deities must let their hair grow freely and devote themselves completely to the Deity. During this time, the priest has a role of responsibility towards the God and the temple. After that time period, if they want to cut their hair, a ceremony is done and they can remove their locks if they choose. Interestingly, for other Deities, like Aishat, one must shave every hair on their body when serving that God or Goddess. It depends on which God and temple is being served. What is it about hair that is so important for priests and temples? It is a notion of purity. Hairs are huge emitters and receptors. When one is in an area, such as a temple, where the flow of energy must be tightly controlled, hair becomes either very helpful or very disturbing, depending on the energetic needs. Even when a hair falls off of the body, it does not lose its qualities, and it can become a big disturbance to the flow of energy. Even animals that are sacrificed are checked thoroughly for a specific type of fur. It is not every ram or cow that can be used in a ceremony - it is only a priest who can safely determine whether an animal is fit for sacrifice, and it is a heavy responsibility to do so. The untrained eye will think that any animal will do, but if there is one piece of the wrong kind of fur on an animal, it cannot be used! According to the ancient Ithiopia initiation, the oldest and most authentic spiritual system mankind has ever known, one must devote themselves to purity and follow the seventy-seven commandments at all times. This is a heavy responsibility! The seventyseven commandments are spiritual laws given to humanity from the Gods (ancestors) so that we can create the world that we want to see and come close to their world. Having dreadlocks helps a person spiritually because it causes the ancestors to notice them. They are a physical proof that the person has vowed to follow the seventy-seven commandments (regard-less whether the person knows of or follows the commandments, merely having dreads means they have vowed to follow them at all costs!), and all of the Gods will be more comfortable with that person because they have taken this vow. This helps the person in every way: with their spiritual growth, the development of their senses, their communication with the ancestors...but on the other side, if one breaks a commandment, there are heavier penalties to be paid. Having dreadlocks literally calls on every God that guarantees the seventy-seven commandments to take a serious look into their life. So, when they break a commandment, it has a huge consequence on their life. One does not have to take this vow of purity and of following the commandments, but when one has dreadlocks, he or she takes that vow, and the retaliation of the Gods is very heavy when a commandment is broken. They include not combing or altering the hair, not getting angry, not gossiping, and not hurting another being, human or nonhuman. How many of those in the modern societies who have locked hair does not eat meat? How many people with locks do not talk about people behind their backs, gossip, and have hot tempers? How many dreads out there can honestly say that they follow the seventy-seven commandments? Very few! Whereas traditional Ital RasTafari once shunned everything from Babylon, such as soda, alcohol and cigarettes, modern RasTafari are often seen smoking, wearing designer clothing, eating meat and drinking beer. Today wearing ones hair naturally has become more of a status symbol than a spiritual decision, and people often begin locking their hair so that they are seen as, Afrocentric, or different, rather than for honest spiritual and conscious reasons. Dreadlocks are not a fashion statement. They are not a political statement against the government or system, and they are not a symbol of vices and pleasures, such as smoking Ganga! Dreadlocks are a very serious spiritual commitment that cannot be taken lightly. One who wears dreadlocks must understand their vow and live up to it, for their own protection.
