There is something magical about a ticket to the Z. There, in your hand, you hold the key to the buzz of excitement, the company of friends, the golden muses, the chandelier, the moment when the lights dim, the anticipation you feel as the curtain rises and then, yes, and then the soaring begins - the music, the voice, the dance and the actor! It is that experience and the extraordinary artists we bring that together make a ticket to The Z magic. The stage is set and we are ready to go! The 2011-2012 season begins with laughter and a legend - Bill Cosby, then rolls full steam ahead from October to May with great music, hilarity, inspiration, breathtaking dance, great theatre and a big dose of the “Wow Factor”. From Bowfire to Bela Fleck and Spamalot to Drumline, the stars of The Jersey Boys, and the great Hugh Masekela, it’s a non-stop jaw-dropping ride to our spectacular Grand finale. The big hit “Stage Door Live!” and Block Parties are back along with brand new adventures! We’ve added “Encounters” and “Explorations” that open the door to fresh experiences and explorations.

A oneman performance by Conor Lovett, accompanied by original music by Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh on fiddle, viola and uileann pipes, the performance catches both the mischievous humor and the wisdom of Ishmael’s commentary. Lovett holds audiences spellbound during this classic tale of a mythic sea monster, the vengeful Captain Ahab, and their epic ocean journey aboard The Pequod. Beautiful. On June 26, 1956, a crowd of 35,000 roared a warm welcome to the stars of Warner Brothers world premiere of Moby Dick at the Zeiterion. For three days, New Bedford was alive with festivities. With Ahab beard growing contests to parades and parties, thousands celebrated the whaling heritage of the city and the arrival of Gregory Peck and John Huston. Join us for the 55th anniversary of the premiere.
Fun Fact! TWO NEW BEDFORDS: ONE FILM In 1954, John Huston filmed “Moby Dick” with the town of Youghal, Ireland as stand-in for New Bedford. The play “Moby Dick” premiered in Youghal’s Town Hall theater which served as the costume department for the film. That film had its world premiere at The Z. Gare St. Lazare will perform “Moby Dick” on The Z stage and we will welcome the Mayor of Youghal to celebrate the fantastic history of two sea towns linked by the film, performing artists and the on-going link between Ireland and the USA.* *Special thanks to the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for sponsoring the Mayor’s trip to New Bedford.

This is an extraordinary, provocative and moving experience for the boldest among you. Living in Exile is a radical retelling of Homer’s Iliad performed in a living room. Exile marries the technology of today to one of Western civilization’s oldest accounts of war to make the connection between past and present. The piece creates two contradictory worlds in collision - the comfort of our living rooms, our televisions and cell phones and, in the intimacy of the performance, a deeply personal and harrowing experience of the violence of war. Living in Exile challenges us to question our indifference and disengagement from the wars being waged. For this performance the audience is seated in a living room created by The Z in the Penler space adjacent to the lobby. TICKETS: $40

The experience of putting all of your trust and attention and affection toward an actor up close is really quite amazing – it is an experience in which the human connection between artist and audience is so intense as to wholly remove you from your world, for a little while.

One of Ireland’s best known theatre companies, Gare St. Lazare Players, brings to The Z a stunning stage adaptation of Herman Melville’s great American novel, Moby-Dick. A one-man performance by Conor Lovett, accompanied by original music by Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh on fiddle, viola and uileann pipes, the performance catches both the mischievous humor and the wisdom of Ishmael’s commentary. Lovett holds audiences spellbound during this classic tale of a mythic sea monster, the vengeful Captain Ahab, and their epic ocean journey aboard The Pequod. This production is everything Moby-Dick should be, freshly invigorated by artists from a fellow nation with its own rich understanding both of seafaring and of storytelling. Beautiful.
