MAGICAL BODIES: ART, TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNIQUE GUEST SPEAKER: HEIDI HENDERSON

How is the body transformed by the technical wonders of lighting and costume? How do artistic collaborators create ideas, and then how do the trained bodies, the dancers fit into these ideas? What comes first? Come hear a bit of history about collaboration between visual artists and choreographers starting with Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe, including Cunningham/Cage/Rauschenberg, and headed toward Momix. Heidi Henderson is a choreographer on the faculty at Connecticut College, and a New York City dancer with the companies of Bebe Miller, Nina Wiener, Peter Schmitz, and more. A four-time recipient of the Choreography Fellowship from the RI State Council for the Arts, she is a frequent contributing editor and writer for Contact Quarterly. elephantJANEdance.com

DOES WATCHING MODERN DANCE HAVE TO BE BORING? GUEST SPEAKER: SYDNEY SKYBETTER

Modern dance performances have a reputation for being alternately boring or pretentious, but this conversation with choreographer Sydney Skybetter proves it doesn’t have to be that way! Featuring clips from recent modern dance performances, and by introducing participants to the choreographic process, this session will illustrate just how fascinating, topical and frankly badass modern dance can be.

Sydney Skybetter is an award-winning choreographer, producer and lecturer on dance history and cultural futurism, most recently seen at Harvard University, South by Southwest Interactive, and TEDx. He is a Public Humanities Fellow and faculty member at Brown University and the founder of the Conference for Research on Choreographic Interfaces. www.skybetter.org
