Hello From the City Manager

From the City Manager

Wrapping up Temple City’s Centennial Celebration

The holiday season always tends to make time fly. We hope that you enjoyed the holiday season with your families and cherished every moment the season has to offer. This past Fall and Winter were very eventful in our City and staff was differently kept on their toes! At the beginning of Fall, we saw many of you with your families at Movies in the Park. There is no better feeling than eating popcorn by the gazebo and munching on snacks while enjoying a good movie! At the end of September, we had our long-awaited Centennial Celebration and Parade. The day was filled with so much history and community pride. We kicked off the celebration with a parade of members of our town, students from our local schools, and other community lead groups. The parade then leaded everyone to Temple City Park, the core of our celebration. The day was filled with music, live performances, games, activities, silent auctions, food trucks and endless fun. It was such a nice way to honor 100 years of history for Temple City.

Spooky season creeped up on us in October and before you knew it, it was time for our Halloween Carnival. Thousands of families and trick-or-treaters roamed Live Oak Park during our biggest event of the year. There were so many creative costumes this year, but I must say, my favorites were the “homemade” costumes. Towards the end of the year, we honored our troops during our Veteran’s Day Celebration. It was a day filled with pride for our country and acknowledgment for those who have served. Lights on Temple City wrapped up 2023 with lots of holiday fun. The snow areas and the sleigh rides are always a hit at our event. It’s a good feeling to be able to gather after a post-pandemic world. We are excited to welcome the Spring and close off the 100th Centennial celebration of our town this coming May. Thank you for being part of such a special year and we are excited to have a successful and eventful 2024! Cordially,

Bryan Cook City Manager

Town of Temple Centennial 2023 is an incredibly special year for Temple City! This year we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Temple by Walter P. Temple. Temple was the tenth of eleven children born in 1869 to Antonia Margarita Workman and her husband F.P.F. Temple. Walter P. Temple married Laura Gonzalez in 1903 and they had five children. While living in the Montebello hills Temple’s 10-year-old son, Thomas, discovered crude oil on their property. By 1917 there were twenty-five oil wells drilling on Temple’s property, and they generated tremendous profits for the family. Temple’s new-found wealth allowed him to purchase 285 acres of land from Lucky Baldwin with the goal of establishing a community for middle-class people. The property he purchased was fifteen miles east of Los Angeles and bordered Encinita Ave. on the west, Baldwin Ave. on the east, Garibaldi Ave on the north and Azusa Ave. (later renamed Live Oak Ave.) on the south.

TOP: This photo from circa 1923 shows the offices of the Temple Townsite Company in the foreground. In the background is the Temple Pacific Electric Red Car Station that was located on Kauffman Ave. where city hall is today. The row of trees in the background were reported to have been planted along Baldwin Ave. by Lucky Baldwin. The Temple Townsite building was located on the east side of Temple City Blvd., south of Las Tunas.

On May 26, 1923, Walter P. Temple, along with his business partners, Milton Kauffman, Sylvester Dupuy and George Woodruff formed the Temple Townsite Company to sell residential/ business lots and encourage the growth of the community. The business district for the Town of Temple was at the intersection of Temple City Blvd. and Las Tunas Drive. (In 1923 the streets were known as Sunset Ave and Main Street.) The first businesses were a hardware store and pharmacy in the building on the northwest corner. There was a park, Temple City Park, and the Temple Townsite Company funded a church building on the corner of Woodruff and Golden West. Key to the planned community was an extension of the Pacific Electric Red Car line from Alhambra running down the center of Las Tunas Drive, with a station building where city hall is now located.

The History of Temple City Schools Have you ever wondered where the early settlers of Temple City sent their kids to school? Or why are the boundaries of the Temple City Unified School District different from the boundaries of the City of Temple City? At the Historical Society of Temple City Museum you can find the answers to these questions and much more information about Temple City schools.

Palo Solo School was the first school in Temple City. It was established in 1908 in a two-room wooden building, 13 years prior to Walter P. Temple subdividing the Town of Temple. By 1911 the school had changed its name to South Santa Anita School. The school served students grades K–8 and, upon promotion, the students attended Pasadena schools for high school. By 1946 South Santa Anita was a K–6 school and the name was changed to Longden School. Cloverly School opened for K–5 students in 1947, and Emperor and Temple City Junior High School (now known as Oak Ave. Intermediate School) opened in 1950. In 1954, 6 years before the incorporation of the City of Temple City, the voters agreed to the formation of the Temple City Unified School District. Temple City Junior High School, which had been part of the Pasadena School District, became Temple City High School while the new high school was under construction. La Rosa Elementary School opened in 1955. Throughout history Temple City schools have been famous for offering students an excellent education, and for parent and community involvement, especially by the members of PTA. Famous alumni include professional athletes, judges, the first blind physicist, an astronaut and many other accomplished people. The Historical Society of Temple City Museum offers visitors interested in the history of Temple City schools an opportunity to view many photos, newspaper articles, memorabilia, as well as every TCHS yearbook.

Centennial Celebration On September 30, 2023, hundreds of Templecitians gathered to celebrate the Centennial year for our town. With the collaborative efforts of City Staff, Temple City Unified School District and numerous stakeholders, this event was nothing but pure Camellia pride. The sounds of the Temple City High School Marching Band began the start of the parade. The vibrations of the brass and wind instruments flowed through Las Tunas Drive. The people cheered and clapped as the band marched by. The parade was adorned with students from Longden Elementary, Cloverly Elementary, members of the Historical Society of Temple City, elected officials, the Woman’s Club of Temple City, the 2023

Classic Car Show & Parade Recap Camellia Court, and many other groups. The parade ended at the corner of Kauffman Avenue and Las Tunas Drive, leading everyone to Temple City Park, where the celebration was being held. The celebration had so much to offer: inflatables for children, bounce houses, arts & crafts stations, games, food trucks, photo booths, silent auctions, live performances, and music. The Homestead Museum was on sight and provided informative historical presentations throughout the day that were really enjoyed by the members of the public. We thank the community for attending this historical celebration and being part of our town’s historical pride.

New Park Playgrounds Coming to Temple City On April 8, 2023, over 400 community members visited our community outreach booth during the city’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Pancake Breakfast to provide staff feedback on the needs and wants of our future park structures. This feedback was then collected, analyzed, and taken into consideration when designing every element within the play structures. Here is what’s coming ahead and we hope you are as excited as we are about this long-awaited project.

LIVE OAK PARK

Space Station The evolution of the Space Station theme into a final concept design is the combined product of community input, recognition of Temple City’s past, creating a generational bridge to the future, Council and Ad Hoc guidance and the design creativity of SWA. The playground features six distinct play zones, three seating areas, seven independent shade structures and a relocated fitness zone next to the Live Oak Park walking path. The playground components all incorporate the space theme, and each play zone is tied together with a dynamically designed safety surface. The highlight of the playground features a four-level rocket with attached control tower and space station. Revolving around the rocket structure are the comet zone group spinner, blue giant zone 2–5 year old play structure, meteor shower zone mounds, climbing and rover, planet zone spinners and swing orbit zone swings. The design incorporates 7 independent shade structures, strategically placed to maximize effectiveness. The shade design takes on other worldly shapes that provides a canopy for play and seating areas.

TEMPLE CITY PARK

Bamboo Forest The bamboo Forest theme was selected as a complimentary design specifically for Temple City Park, to blend with the existing structures and evoke feelings of calm and nature. In addition to the playground area, a landscape buffer is included in the design to provide a visual and physical separation to the north parking lot. The main playground structure incorporates a net climber, slide, spinner and overhead climber. Swings and sensory panels are included in the project with a custom designed safety surfacing complementing the theme. Included in the renovation project for Temple City Park is a refresh of the playground adjacent picnic shelter. The picnic shelter refresh includes “Thunder Brown” support posts, “Mountain Forest” shade covering and updated LED lighting. The color selection for the picnic shelter is meant to compliment the nature inspired playground as well as the natural park environment.

Playground Renovation Project Timelines The final concept designs are first reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Commission and then to City Council for final review and approval on September 5, 2023. Due to the extended production timeline for playground equipment, the sooner the concept designs are approved the quicker the project can be completed. The projected production timeline for the Temple City Park playground equipment is 6–10 months and the Live Oak Park playground equipment is 10–12 months.
