All Artistic compositions are an attempt by their composers to present a personal view of their world.

Irrespective of the medium, it is the lyrical narrative in a work and how that moves the responder that matters to an artist; whether through an exploration of the transient beauty of a moment or the harsh realities of histories.

Creative 4 invite you to consider the patchwork of human landscapes presented in these creations and in doing so, consider where your and their worlds converge.

TheEyrieis a slightly abstract mixed media painting portraying a hidden place of beauty that is only visible to a quiet mind. Playing with a mixture of Inks, Pastels and Acrylic, it was fun creating an image of a magical place I would like to go when my mind is in a whirl, somewhere to contemplate nature’s beauty.

I am constantly struck by the breathtaking beauty of the varied landscapes of Australia. Whether it be the inland deserts, the red iron soils, the hilly patchworks of the central west or the rainforests and beaches, they are exquisite to me. This study was inspired by a drive through Western Australia into an area of coastline north of Broome where the sand is red.

The desire to find elemental meaning through the physical ties some of the work to a sense of place.

Cockatoo Island, convict penal establishment, naval ship dockyard. Glenrowan, Kelly’s last stand. “Armed,he lurchesthroughthemist, hulking, swaying, clanging, taunting-thelegendisborn”. (Ian Jones - Last Outlaw).

The people, the places they existed in tell many stories.

The garment form has been repeated as a narrative space; a reflective space, a space that invites engagement between the object and the viewer. Human absence occupies a very special presence in places that humans have abandoned.

There is an intriguing dichotomy between the undeniable nature of life’s impermanence and our need to grasp what the Romantics termed, ‘the eternal moment’. For me the perpetual movement of light through sky and water epitomises this binary opposition.

In water and sky and light we are gifted a visual reminder that the memories, the experiences we grasp as true, are constantly shifting and changing, becoming ideas of a fleeting moment; mercurial, phantasmal images, depending on the experiences we bring to the reminiscence.

Like shards of light piercing the surface of the water or flickering on a wave or breaking through clouds…

And yet, the paradox is not lost on me that through my painting I am also trying to give permanence to fleeting moments and fix them into an unchanging form. Perhaps an attempt not to make time stand still as to make it vanish altogether.
