With my academic background in engineering (B.S. in civil engineering from National Central University, Taiwan), I excel in logical problem-solving in the design processes, such as user experience research, data analysis, and especially, the organization of the mechanical structures of products—which is key to product success. With my designer’s training and sensibility (currently a third-year master student of industrial design at National Chiao Tung University, NCTU, Taiwan), I have strong design skills and ability to capture nuanced feelings and emotions and gain insights from user’s psychology to develop innovative products. In addition, I am confident in my solid foundation of appearance design and material application that I have built by attending the one-year intensive course to at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology during the first year of my master's study. I also enjoy active learning, associative thinking, and exploring resources to gain inspiration for the development teams I join. Up-to-date, I have acquired solid design training and accumulated an abundance practical experience in design development. In 2017, I presented my study of the user experience of Taiwan's Palace Museum at the TAICHI workshop, one of the largest multidisciplinary workshops on HCI in Taiwan. Also in 2017, I interned at NetDragon, China, taking responsibility for the appearance design of its interactive table. Then, in 2018, I joined early UX/UI design team at Adventech, Taiwan, and participated in the development of an e-paper application, winning the Gold Award in the company's innovation competition.

Why do you wish to study at CTU in Prague
All of these experiences enhanced my integral and pragmatic design ability, further urging me to seek advanced design training and explore more design possibilities. I am drawn to study at CTU by the Atelier Karel at CTU’s Industrial Design Institute, especially its interdisciplinary approach to integrate new technologies with art and design. Among CTU faculty, I hope to study with Prof. Marian Karel, whose works explore the relationship between glass material, light, and space. Such a relationship is also the core issue of my Master's study at NCTU. AS you can find from my enclosed portfolio(page06-35), the design works “LUCID,” “MISTING MOSS,” and“COLOCK,” focus on probing into emotional problems and help people feel comfortable by the variation of light, shadow, color, and odor. For example, in LUCID, I use the light and shadow of leaves made by rolled glass to create a private and comfortable space in the public area of a house to maintain a stable and peaceful relationship among family members. From these three works, I found my interest in transparent materials (glass and acrylic), light, shadow, emotions, and the relation between people and space. In my ongoing graduation design project, I will continue in this direction by applying emotional design to develop a series of interactive furniture or home decorations to arouse soothing feeling. In addition to traditional materials, I am searching for more technologies to expand the scope of my project. In my search, I decide to study abroad, broadening my horizons of design and aesthetic inspiration. I choose the CTU's Industrial Design Institute because of its emphasis on the combination of technology applications and humanistic art, which is exactly the value of my master's training. During my study at CTU, I hope to closely collaborate with its faculty and student in developing my graduate project and explore innovation by combining material and technologies. Ultimately, I believe my experience at CTU will guide me to become an interdisciplinary, creative designer with outstanding collaborative and communicate abilities to work with people of different backgrounds and needs.
What can I learn at CTU in Prague
In details, there are three objectives of my exchange at CTU. Firstly, to acquire Interdisciplinary learning and knowledge integration capability to balance traditions and technologies. The Industrial Design Institute has five studios devoted to the innovation of material, traditional product design, application of new technology and media, and interactive design. The Institute's diverse courses on applying modern technological tools to expand traditional product design will help me to capture the latest design trends and strengthen my interdisciplinary capacity. Through coursework and studio participation, I will acquire the unique design thinking and techniques to my graduation project. Secondly, I hope to expand my designer's vision from a wide range of courses under the Design Academy, including architecture, landscape design, art, and industrial design. Design is a multidisciplinary field, and it is important for designers to nurture creativity at different design scales. To be specific, architecture and landscape are the larger scales under which a product is located and used, therefore, by studying the features of these scales, I will gain a deeper understanding of the relations between human and space, as well as to make my design more suitable to the environment. Additionally, by taking the course History of Applied Art and Design, I can dig more deeply into the specific context of each design work, studying how they were made to meet different social and cultural demands. Finally, during my stay at CTU, I hope to gain critiques for my works from my international instructors and classmates. I wish to learn a variety of different design methods, tools, and studies, all of which will help me to develop new approaches to design thinking and become key references for my own design in the future. Finally, in addition to experiencing different education system, I will also attend exhibitions to gain a rich understanding of the design in different cultures. I believe the experience at CTU will lead to a breakthrough in my designer’s career. Together with this proposal, I enclose my design portfolio and resume as evidence of my strong qualification to succeed in the exchange program. If accepted, I will make the best use of this opportunity to enrich my design training and devote my time to exchange with my future classmates, exploring new design opportunities altogether. In the meantime, I will do my best to keep sharpening my English ability to take the challenges of studying in an international environment. Thank you for your kind consideration.
