are the reason we have trees, bushes, and flowers. Without honeybees animals would also be affected, as they would not have the grasses and grains that the bees pollinate. And without animals your steak, hamburgers and barbecue would all be gone, too. Actor and living legend Morgan Freeman even transformed his 124 acre ranch into a bee sanctuary. Early on I learned that bee-ing aware of nature is crucial, and how important bees are to maintaining our life. Each month PR companies, contributing writers, photographers and others bee-lieve we are making a great statement with the magazine. My momma taught me about the birds and the bees and now I understand more about bee-ing partners. It’s been my great pleasure to keep the buzz on golf all these years now. I love the polarization of the pollination in our industry. Let›s help others grow golf, travel, philanthropy, lifestyle and all the items that make our life on this glorious planet what it is. Listen closely…the Universe has spoken…. and I like what it says! All you have to do is BEE yourself.

Daytime highs soar into the 70s and even low 80s in April, transitioning to the 80s in May and June. July and August are consistently in the 80s, but cool mountain nights and lower humidity offer a reprieve from the south’s oppressive summer heat.

playing from the tips
To Make Golfing More Affordable in Retirement,
Consider a Golfing Community For active seniors
with a passion for playing golf, there are many golfing retirement communities located across the United States to consider as your primary retirement residence. Imagine living surrounded by beautifully-maintained green-grass vistas, just a short walk away from your community clubhouse. Picture the perfectly-sized home where your clubhouse dues, greens fees and cart fees may all be included in your monthly homeowner’s association dues. Nearly every state offers a 55+ community built around a golf course with many amenities. But there are
12
trade-offs to consider. While golfing retirement communities might be cheaper in some states, you may not find them cheaper when it comes to your actual lifestyle. For instance, you should consider the weather as a factor in your decision-making process. If you move to a state that has harsh winters and humid summers, your time on the green might be limited to spring and fall. For desert states with harsh summers, you might not want to golf in the 100+ degree temperatures possible from June through September. (Weather withstanding, keep in mind that most of these communities offer a host of other amenities too—even when you aren’t golfing. Fitness rooms, art classes, community dinners and events—there are all kinds of ways to get involved and get social with your active neighbors.) Besides the weather, ask yourself other questions which might affect your retirement budget as well as lifestyle and happiness. Such as, how close is the community to your
family and long-time friends? If you end up spending a lot of money on travel expenses, you could negate any potential budget savings you had planned. And if your family can’t afford to travel to be with you, you might end up missing your connection to them more than you had thought. Once you’ve settled on a golfing community in the right location for you and your family, you might be perfectly situated for an economicallyadvantageous golfing lifestyle, with lots of mild exercise, fresh air and a built-in friend network of likeminded retirees to spend your days with. It could be just the ticket for your health and financial wellness. The new symbol of a Champion at the Bay Hill Invitational. In honor of Mr. Palmers love for fashion and his favorite Alpaca Cardigan Sweater.
When the Sweater Fits… Wear It! Tyrrell Hatton, became the 2020 Champion of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, wielding his 5 ft, 9 in… 161 lbs. medium frame body around the extremely tough Bay Hill Golf Course set up, and battling some of the best players in the world… in an X-Large way. After 3-years on the PGA Tour, Tyrrell notched his belt with his first victory with a 2-over par 74 in the final round. Narrowly clipping runner-up Marc Leishman by one-stroke. From Marlow, Buckinghamshire,
England, Tyrrell took his knowledge of playing in winding, cool conditions and worked them to his advantage. He seemed to be in complete control until he came to the 11th hole, being bitten by a double-bogey. Getting re-focused, he reeled off seven straight pars on the way to the clubhouse and the championship.
By Hatton’s own admission, he is easy to poke fun after. “After all, I’m English… and I am tougher on me, than anyone else could be.” “I can literally beat myself up with no-one else’s help, it’s all the game I play in my own head,” Hatton explained. As we walked around the Bay Hills grounds, so many people were talking about course conditions. “Arnie would be proud how this course is set up.” “Arnie… always wanted it tough… he must have a smile on his face this week.” With scores this week well about average, the Arnold Palmer Invitational seemed like we were watching a Major like the U.S. Open with the length of the rough. Seeing a 9-iron hit into most greens that would bounce 6-feet high and roll of the back of the green… was a pretty good indication of what the best players in the world were fighting. The quote of the day came from – Harry Higgs, who shot 76, “Today was the hardest I’ve ever seen a golf course play. Hats off to anyone that shoots under par.”. Congratulations Tyrrell… with that new notch in the belt… you’ll be covering it up with that new sweater. “When the Sweater Fits… Wear It!” The Champion and his Sweater

A Return to Sawgrass by Holly Geoghegan
H
aving returned home from covering the first round of the PLAYERS Championship, I awoke the next morning to the news that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had announced the cancellation of the remainder of the tournament due to the Coronavirus — along with the next four PGA Tour events through the Valero Texas Open. The next day Augusta National postponed The Masters with no rescheduled date. While none of it really came as a surprise given the domino effect of so many major league sports organizations shutting down their seasons, it was nonetheless disappointing. Amidst all this dire breaking sports news, my iPhone prompted me the same day with my photo memories from last year’s PLAYERS Championship. I could only smile as these were happier moments indeed. Noah, my best friend Sara’s son, had given his dad, Brian, tickets to Sunday’s final round as a Christmas gift. The two flew into Jacksonville for the weekend and we played a congenial (aka: cut-throat, winner- take-all) round of golf at Hammock Beach Resort on Saturday afternoon. The competition was followed by a deli-
16
cious gourmet dinner and “awards ceremony” overlooking the ocean at the resort’s Atlantic Grill restaurant. Sunday was an epic day. As a member of the media, I was able to give Brian and Noah an insider’s view of what happens behind the scenes at a premier golf event like the PLAYERS -— the “5th Major,” “the Super Bowl,” “the Gold Standard” – as it is frequently described by the PGA Tour, the players and fans. We toured the media center, got a cool photo op, injected a few dollars into the golf economy inside the merchandise tent (making sure to buy a shirt for Mom back home), and spent most of our time walking the golf course. We experienced Pete Dye’s iconic design and sipped a few beers by the 17th
hole and its infamous island green while watching McIlroy on his way to claiming his first PLAYERS Championship. For McIlroy, it proved to be a pivotal moment in the 2018-2019 season. He went on to win the RBC Champi-

onship, the Tour Championship and his second FedEx Cup title, (the only player to win it twice, other than Tiger Woods) and who was named the 2019 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, beating out Brooks Koepka. For Brian and Noah, it was a bucket list father-son golf experience, a cherished memory that wouldn’t be forgotten. But it soon became a distant memory when Brian was diagnosed with throat cancer last October — oropharyngeal cancer to be exact. This came as a complete shock to family and friends in Rochester, NY. Brian, who despite recently turning 60, is an extremely fit, avid single-digit golfer and a die-hard hockey nut who played at Miami of Ohio University. He is also somewhat of a local legend having built a commercial-sized hockey rink, “Deer Bone Arena,” complete with lights and sound system, in the backyard of his home for local kids and neighbors to enjoy. This year marked Deer Bone’s

While oropharyngeal cancer has a remarkably high survival rate, the treatment protocol is brutal. Chemotherapy…radiation…burns and blisters on the throat…days spent on a feeding tube. Brian’s only respite was watching golf and his favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills, make
it to the NFL playoffs, albeit for only one game. (After all, it is the Buffalo Bills and you know what “Bills” stands for…Boy, I love losing Super Bowls!). I’m happy to report that a week ago Brian was declared cancer free. He rang the cancer bell in the hospital after hearing the news and took a mighty golf swing. While none of us will be watching any professional golf for the foreseeable future thanks to the COVID-19, I know one guy who isn’t bothered and is genuinely looking forward to his annual “buddies’ trip” next month. After all, he’ll be checking off another item on his bucket list by returning to the home of the PLAYERS Championship…only this time he’ll be the one teeing it up at TPC Sawgrass. What a difference a year makes.

LPGA International Undertakes Renovation Project
LPGA International, home of the highly acclaimed Jones and Hill courses, enters the New Year in better shape than ever following a renovation project that enhanced both layouts and the property’s renowned practice facility. New owner Fore Golf Partners took over the property in the fall and immediately began investing in Daytona Beach’s flagship facility. At the heart of the work was a bunker renovation project that restored the bunkers on both layouts to their original specifications and installed new drainage. Portions of the cart paths on both courses were repaved and the member driving range was resurfaced with TifTuf Bermudagrass. The work commissioned by Fore Golf Partners has LPGA International in prime condition as Daytona

Beach enjoys the heart of its winter and spring seasons. LPGA International, which counts World Golf Hall of Famer Karrie Webb among the women who have triumphed at the property, is one of Central Florida’s premier multi-course facilities. The Rees Jones designed course features yawning waste bunkers, mounding and natural marsh areas. The layout, home to some of the region’s best and most undulating greens, is challenging but with five sets of tees, it’s playable for golfers of all skill levels. The Arthur Hills design features fairways lined by stunning magnolia trees and native pines, conjuring
up images of North Carolina’s famed sandhills. With no parallel fairways or housing, the Hills Course is certainly worthy of building a trip around. While the courses at LPGA International are Daytona Beach’s most prominent, they are hardly alone. The area is home to more than 20 courses, including a pair of Donald Ross designs in the South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club and New Smyrna Golf Club. Victoria Hills, a Ron Garl course just a short drive west of “The World’s Most Famous Beach,” is the 15th best public course in Florida, according Golfweek. Talk about “Getting a Grip”
One arm up for the NAOAGA!
Chris Wood, South Africa
Mission Inn – Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida was the site of the 20020 Winter Region Championship of the North American One-Armed Golfer Association. The NAOAGA was created in October, 2000, to promote the game of golf among those that play “one-handed” for purposes of competition, recreation, physical and emotional rehabilitation. 46 one-armed men and women players competed this weekend in one of three categories, Assisted, with an extra hand or a stump on the club, Un-Assisted with only one hand on the club and Net, either player from above category but incorporating their GHIN handicap. There were 10 junior golfers, 8 from the Never Say Never Foundation joining the competition this year. Dan Aldrich, President explained, “the NAOAGA is member of the United State Adaptive Golf Alliance. Using that broader organization to speak and have a voice for all different disabled golf organizations in the 24

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our experience with NAOAGA and Never Say Never Foundation. Jackson has grown more emotionally from these events and being around these men and women. He looks people in the eye when engaged in conversation, speaks directly; he’s not as shy. NAOAGA Junior Div. needs more kids who play golf with one arm or could learn to play golf with one arm. This is a life changing experience for them. I promise!” – Todd Merriss United States. The NAOAGA is now 270 members strong and growing.” Nick and Dan met 2 years ago at the Para Long Drive. Dan saw how Nick and his Foundation were helping kids adapt to their disability and reached out to Nick and asked if they would join them in a competitive environment. “Now, there are other Adaptive Organizations that are having clinics to help kids with disabilities learn and experience the game… but as far as we know, we are the only organization in the world, that invites juniors to play competitively with us in the same environment,” Dan explained. “We agreed as a group (NAOAGA) to include the young players into our tour-
naments and we went as far as paying all of their tournament and lodging expenses. Nick’s organization helps the families with the travel expenses. Bob Gorman, tournament chairman, was instrumental in raising the funds for the kids to play as well as offsetting a lot of the money that the adult players would need to play,” Dan remarked. NAOAGA hosts an Annual Meeting & Championship for its membership each year at a different championship venue in North America. In its first 20 years of existence, events have been successfully staged from Las Vegas to Florida, New Mexico to Rhode Island, Chicago to Montreal, Kentucky to the Jersey Shore, & all the way to Prince Edward Island. STAY CALM & Keep Putting Putterball: the perfect social distancing tool for practice & fun. :
W
by Holly Geoghegan
hile the professional golf tours have put a pause on the 2020 season due to the Coronavirus and families are “sheltering in place” around the country, Putterball is experiencing an exciting spike in sales following its recent introduction at the 2020 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL. Golfers are rapidly turning to the New Jersey based golf company as a fantastic way to spend their social distancing time, while keeping their putting stroke sharp. Golf games can be as fun and entertaining as being on the course and it’s a great way to spend time with the family, especially during these uncertain times. Putterball is a unique game that combines golf and beer pong to create hours of fun that everyone can enjoy.
28
The rules of Putterball are similar to a standard game of beer pong — the objective is to make all six cups before the opposing team. Rule #1: To determine which team goes first, it’s simple: LADIES FIRST. Otherwise, flip a coin or consider a round of Paper, Rock, Scissors. Rule#2: Teams alternate trying to putt the ball into the cups. Each player attempts one putt per turn. Once a cup is made, a cover is placed over the hole to remove it from play. Rule # 3: If Team A makes all six cups, the opposing team (Team B) is given a chance at redemption.
If Team B is unable to make all of the remaining cups, Team A wins. With more than 1500 five-star reviews, Putterball has been featured in Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and was a Top 10 Best New Product pick at the PGA Merchandise Show by the Golf Insiders. PutterBall comes with everything you need - putters, balls, high density, durable foam mat and hole covers. It can be played indoors or out and will keep your game and your sanity in shape. To order your Putterball game, visit www.putterballgame.com.

Georgia Golf Trail's I-95 Corridor:
Ten Great Destinations
King and Prince
If you want an action-packed agenda with limited course-to-course travel for your next golf outing, there’s no finer destination than the ten golf courses on the Georgia Golf Trail along the I-95 corridor in southeast Georgia. And, when you consider the multitude of dining and accommodation options in Savannah, the beach access at Hotel Tybee on Tybee Island, and the historical sight-seeing opportunities on Jekyll Island, this part of Georgia can be a go-to destination on an annual basis and be just as appealing to non-golfers as it is to golfers. For golfers, there are four golf courses on Jekyll Island (Great Dunes, Indian Mound, Oleander, and Pine Lakes); the King and the Prince Golf Course on St. Simons Island; three golf courses (Seaside, Plantation, and Retreat) at the Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island; the Sapelo Hammock Golf Club in Shellman Bluff; and The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah. On their own, each golf course will provide every golfer with a wonderful, fulfilling, and enjoyable round of golf. When marketed as a destination within the Georgia Golf Trail, southeast Georgia becomes as appealing for golfers 12 months a year – just as 34
south Florida is popular in the winter, northern Michigan in the summer, and the Carolinas in the spring and fall. Exciting, trendy, and historical are three ways to describe these ten golf courses along the Georgia Golf Trail. “Our golf courses along the I-95 corridor are terrific golf destinations. They are incredible designs which are very well maintained and affordably priced,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, Georgia Golf Trail. “In Georgia, we are fortunate to have such high caliber golf courses for the general public throughout the year.” At Jekyll Island, you have access to four golf courses: the nine-hole Great Dunes course and three 18-hole layouts -- Indian Mound, Oleander, and Pine Lakes. Great Dunes, designed by Walter Travis and opened in 1926, has been used as a testing center by the USGA for clubs, shafts, and golf balls. Indian Mound, designed by Joe Lee, is the shortest of the three 18-hole courses, but has water hazards on 11 of the 18 holes. Oleander is such a great layout that it has hosted the Georgia Open on four occasions. Pine Lakes is peaceful, quiet, and tranquil as it meanders through ocean forests and natural marshes.
The King and the Prince, also designed by Joe Lee, is a seaside course where all 18 holes weave around towering live oak trees, across lakes and over lagoons. This golf course has a group of ‘signature holes’ – four salt marsh island holes, which are accessed by 800 feet of bridges. At Sea Island, Seaside, Plantation, and Retreat are spectacular and wellcrafted gems. Seaside can briefly be described as “a stunning classic.” Plantation was a 9-hole Walter Travis creation from 1928 that was redesigned and reconfigured into 18 holes by Mark and Davis Love III. The quality of the layout is matched by the phenomenal views of the Atlantic Ocean. Retreat has also been redesigned by the Love brothers. Dramatic, playable, and interesting best describe Retreat. Seaside and Plantation are now the host courses for the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic each November. Surrounded by tidal marshes, Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 11
Sapelo Hammock
Jekyll Island-Pine Lakes saw palmettos, and live oak trees, dripping with Spanish moss, Sapelo Hammock, located in McIntosh County, is in terrific shape and its greens are a reflection of its superintendent’s commitment to excellence. “Our course is in great shape
because of the many volunteer hours by our members in recent years,” said Chris Hankey, superintendent, Sapelo Hammock. “But, we also have a great crew. I’m only as good as my crew. As a super, I’m part-time plumber and part-time electrician.
Our members say our greens are the best in the coastal area of Georgia.” The Club at Savannah Harbor hosted the Legends of Golf event on the Champions Tour from 2003-2013 which means if it’s good enough for the Champions Tour, then you will enjoy it, too. For complete details on travel packages to all the destinations on the Georgia Golf Trail, please call 1-833-877-6988 or access GeorgiaGolfandTravel.com. A Landmark Locale in U.S. Golf
Bobby Jones - Municipal Golf Course Layout- Sarasota - Donald Ross 1925
The Bobby Jones Golf Club (1000 Circus Boulevard, Sarasota, Florida) exudes history and star power. Very few U.S. golf clubs can claim a legendary golf course architect (Donald Ross) and one of the game’s all-time greats (Bobby Jones) present at a grand opening. Yes, Ross -- the hall of fame Scottish golf course architect -- designed the first 18 holes at this golf club and Jones -- the legendary, hall of fame golfer -- was present for the opening round at the golf course which was renamed after him in 1927. The Bobby Jones Golf Club (www. bobbyjonesgolfclub.com; 941-365-4653)
was originally called the Sarasota Municipal Golf Course when it opened in 1926. The following year, the City of Sarasota renamed the course after Jones. On that special day in 1927, more than 1,000 people watched Jones shoot 73 around his namesake course. Of course, three years later, Jones completed the Grand Slam when he won the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, British Open and British Amateur -- in the same calendar year (1930). The City of Sarasota added to the star power of the Bobby Jones Golf Club when it renamed the street that leads into the Bobby Jones Golf Club. That roadway is now called Paul Azinger
Bobby Jones Golf Club ribbin cutting on 13 FEB 1927 sarasota - BJGC FB 13 FEB 2020
Way, to honor the local golfing great who won the 1993 PGA Championship. Azinger grew up in the Sarasota area and attended nearby Sarasota High School. Azinger, now a network TV golf analyst, is a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, who played on four U.S. Ryder Cup teams. Azinger captained the 2008 winning U.S. Ryder Cup team. Today, the Bobby Jones Golf Club has 45 holes. The expansion of the original 18 holes started when nine more holes were opened in 1952. An additional nine holes were added in 1967. That gave the Bobby Jones Golf Club 36 holes. In the late 1960s, Ross’ original 18-hole course was divided in half and matched with the newer nine-hole tracks. One 18-hole course was named the American Course – to honor Jones’s U.S. Amateur win at Merion (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and his U.S. Open triumph at Interlachen (Edina, Minnesota) in 1930. The other 18-hole layout was named the British Course, to recognize Jones’ two 1930 wins at the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club (Hoylake, England) and the British Amateur at St. Andrews (Scotland).
If you want to play the original Donald Ross-designed golf course, play the back nines of the American and the British. The last nine holes at the Bobby Jones Golf Club were added in 1977 when a nine-hole, par-30 executive course was designed by Lane Marshall and was named in honor of Scottish38

Bobby Jones Golf Club Sarasota TODAY - BJGC FB 5 FEB 2020 born Col. John Hamilton Gillespie. As you would expect for a golf course with many decades of history, the Bobby Jones Golf Club is part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail, which includes 53 golf courses from Pensacola to Key West. It’s one thing to have 45 holes of golf for the general public, but maintaining this facility 365 days a year to a high standard is no easy chore. When asked to compare and contrast the American and British
layouts, assistant PGA professional Christian Martin says the British Course is wider, longer, more forgiving, and more appealing to younger players, whereas the American Course is shorter and tighter with raised greens, which appeals more to older golfers. It’s worth noting that Sarasota’s golf history runs deeper than Ross and Jones, as golf was first played in Sarasota back in 1886 when Gillespie moved to Sarasota and built two greens and one long fairway. By 1888, there were
four holes plus a practice range. By 1906, there was an 18-hole course plus a clubhouse. But, in 1924 – Gillespie died in 1923 – the course was sold and developed. Gillespie’s role in bringing golf to Sarasota is why Sarasota is also known as “The Cradle of American Golf” – or at least one of them! When you are ready to experience true American golfing history, head to the Bobby Jones Golf Club and take your time traveling down Paul Azinger Way.

Finding a Diamond in the Rough! For David Talvin, his passion for golf, fueled his desire to make a bid to purchase the Sandpiper Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Florida. What was one a vibrant Country Club atmosphere, Sandpiper Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole course designed Steve Smyers, had seen better days and was growing worse by the minute. large jobs for the universities in Florida was the man taking on the mission. Dave told us the story at lunch… Hurricane Irma roared through three days after the purchase was finalized in September 2017, leaving the course a waterlogged, windblown mess. But Tavlin wasn’t fazed. He was determined to bring the little course back and make it an attractive option for recreational golfers once more. Dave himself had completed the plan for the redesigned golf course. Taking conversations from resident golfers of issue on the golf course, adding some design features not found on any other golf courses and changing

the existing course yardage to add 40 additional homesite to the community. “While shortening the course slightly to make it more playable, we have added some features to add the Risk Reward factor to the course,” Dave explained. A truly Stewart of the land… even an expired tree becomes art at the hand of Dave. Big hitters will overpower this golf course, but at the same time… unless you place the ball where it needs to be… you are going to pay the price. You’ll see a number of these around the course

With a little bit of progressive thinking on Tavlin’s part, Links at Sandpipper has a forward set of tees that allows even the beginner players to feel comfortable on the course. The forward tees comes down to White at 2,156 and Gold at 1,786, making these hole at par 3’s. This size course makes it perfect for the First Tee programming in the area. When you play the course for the first time… make plenty of notes, because you will find yourself in trouble (I did), but on the return visit it will feel like you are very comfortable making the decisions where to hit the ball. You will agree this is a true “Diamond” that has emerged back from the rough. Planning a trip to the Lakeland area… Plan a round at the Links of Sandpiper. After spending a week in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we are beginning to understand the lyrics of the song… “Sweet Home Alabama.” Beautiful sand beaches, friendly people, and the desire to relax and enjoy life. We have 3 simple priorities when we visit an area: 1.) Golf, 2.) Have Fun, and 3.) Eat good Food. Now we can tell you that the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area of Alabama, truly fit all those priorities. I forgot to mention… on any given day this list of priorities can change based on our mood. Our week began with 18-holes at Gulf Shores Golf Club. A beautiful setting and challenging golf course create a golf atmosphere for both the golf novice and enthusiast will admire. This traditional plantation-style club allows you to play the game without a tremendous amount of shot making challenges. This course is adjustable to fit your game:

Gold - 6,856 yards, Blue - 6,410, White – 6,006 yards, Red – 4,822 yards. Nothing better than residents of the area to talk about places to eat. We are in to trying multiple places based on what their specialty is. First stop… “The Gulf.” Who would even imagine that you can take cargo containers and create atmosphere for a lounge? Nestled next to the Gulf of Mexico, we watched the moon rise while sipping on a cool adult beverage, talked about golf and that set the mood for what was to come next. Stop two that first night… “Cosmos.” We heard that they were good… but these appetizers were “Out of this World.” Seemed like everyone else in town knew that also. For dinner… a tremendous restaurant called the “Perch” at the Gulf State Park Lodge. Talk about unique... an elegant location in the State Park along the Gulf of Mexico. The complex included a very modern ecologically built hotel and
convention center. We determined right away the residents that suggested the “Perch” knew what they were talking about. After dinner sitting on the deck discussing… “How are we going to top our first day.” Up the next morning and we were playing Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club. This is a Classic Course A 400acre Nature Preserve with 27-holes of generous landing areas and strategically placed greens… creates the “shot makers” style golf course. If you aren’t paired with a local… make sure you pick up a yardage book to know what lurks in front of you… what you can see… and may not see. A large practice range, chipping green, practice bunkers, and 10,000-square-foot practice green is the perfect location to work on your game. With 4 sets of tees and 3 different distinctly different 9-holes courses, Peninsula makes it easy to match the yardage to your game. The Marsh 2,488 to 3,579 yards, The Lakes 2,486 to 3,397, and The Cypress 2,475 to 3,606 We had a great late lite lunch at the “Hangout.” Talk about bringing back memories… The Hangout has the largest collection of Hot Wheel cars, PEZ Dispensers, and Metal Lunch Boxes. I was walking round saying… I had one of those, and one of those. Finally, someone said, “How old are you?” My Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 11
simple response was, “Pretty young today.” This is the TRUE “Fun Spot” on the Gulf Coast. Have you ever had dinner in a zoo? I can now say that we have. The Safari Club, inside the Gulf Coast Zoo was an amazing adventure and expedition through the menu of traditional foods. Okay… let’s set this straight… No endangered animals were harmed during our adventure. We got to meet the Chef of The

Safari Club and you could tell immediately that his passion for food quality and delivery was going to be a treat. So, how do you top off an incredible day? You guessed it… a stop for sweets at “The Yard.” Made famous with their appearance on the “Shark Tank,” The Yard, (if you watch that episode), constructs an ooey… gooey… mess of a milkshake. And, their claim of the greatest milkshake ever… well, I’m still looking for
someone to top this experience. There was even a sink to wash your face and hands, and your take-home glass, when you finished. Purposely booking a late tee time for

header the 3rd day, we were off to the Coastal Art Center, where our morning was going to be spent creating a piece of blown glass. Something we had never done and sounded very intriguing to say the least. I believe we did quite well for first timers. Then it was on to Kiva Dunes. Continually rated among the top-rated courses in Alabama. This was such a challenge to play. Kiva Dunes primarily layout East to West and with the prevailing wind from the South East there isn’t much that isn’t playing in to or with a cross wind, adding to your adventure. The course was designed by Jim Edgeman, the property developer and longtime friend and former U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate. The course is a superb Links-style golf course and has a distinctive blend of signature holes to enjoy. Gold - 7,092, Blue – 6,464, White – 5,849 and Red – 5,006 Time to take the challenge at Kiva Dunes. Our early dinner happened at one of the best sea food restaurants on the Gulf Coast. was an incredible choice. Their sign says it all… “Best Steaks on the Island and Fresh Local Seafood.” No complaints here. They lived up to their claim. What to do on the next to the last evening on the gulf shore? Yep… party and dance like no one is watching, at the famous Flora-Bama. 2 main stages with live entertainment. I lost track of how many places to indulge yourself with adult beverages… but here is a “Word from the Wise…” ONLY drink ONE Bushwhacker! It is the signature drink at Flora-Bama. Experience and 20/20 hindsight will reign supreme with that suggestion. Our final day was set with a tee time set for the Arnold Palmer designed, Cotton Creek golf course at Craft Farms. Mr. Palmer decided to build one of his first signature golf courses at Craft Farms Golf Resort the moment he stepped foot on this land; just north of the white sand beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. “There is something special about this place,” quoted Mr. Palmer. The pictures in the clubhouse tell an incredible story of the friendship that development between Mr. Craft and Mr. Palmer. Experience
the beauty of Craft Farms Golf Resort and play your best round of golf. Gold – 7,129, Blue – 6,617, White – 6,080, Silver – 5,438, and Red 5,160. Saving the best for last. Dinner the final night was scheduled at the Voyager, inside the Perdido Beach Resort. Oh My! Seated in a secluded dining room, this semi-formal dinner was truly going to be a special treat. There was no shortage of food. And the selection of Fresh Fish dishes was incredible. You know those times when the food is so good… everyone is quiet and just paying attention to their dinner? Well… this is the place. Experience the Voyager. l;;;;;;;;lWhat a tremendous experience to end our time in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Until we meet again, all the memories will return… every time we hear “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Getting on the Old Course in 2021 46
Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 11
It’s on every avid golfer’s “must play” bucket list – a pilgrimage to The Old Course in St Andrews. But like many iconic “Must Do/See” destinations, it too is in danger of being loved to death. In a normal year there are limited opportunities to play the great lady, due to tee time restrictions, daylight in the fall and winter, local club-university and ticket holder access, Sunday closure and tournament play. Once upon a time not so long ago Open Rota courses were taken out for a minimal amount of time. But in today’s golf world with TV viewing at a premium and the dollars involved - major courses are being taken out for ever increasing periods of time in advance of the event. This will be the case in 2021 when The Open Championship celebrates its 150th playing in the Home of Golf, St Andrews, across The Old Course July 1518. While the venue makes for fantastic spectator viewing and an incredible attendance experience – it also creates challenges in actually playing the course. “Course protection measures” requiring play to be off mats on the Old Course will be in place most of the peak season in the lead up to The Open and course closures from June 19th until after the championship. Detailed Information on all course closures (it will affect the New and Jubliee Courses as well) may be found on the official St Andrews Links Trust website at www.standrews.com. If the Old Course is a definite priority for 2021 it can still be done but will require prior planning and some flexibility. Here are several ways to secure your spot on the first tee.
Guaranteed Tee Times Use a tour operator such as DP&LGOLF.com, based in St Andrews, that are an Authorised Provider of Old Course Tee Times and can offer guaranteed tee times for the Old Course as part of a package to the St. Andrews area that include local accommodation, additional golf, local attractions and other extras. These times are very limited and any golfers who would like to secure one of these slots will need to note interest at least a year before they wish to play. For example, if you want to play during the high season, around AprilJune 19, 2021, they would need to hear from you at least 12 months in advance. Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 11
Annual Private Ballot The Annual Private Ballot opens for a two-week window in late August of each year and ends in early September. Check the St Andrews Links Trust website frequently for notice of the 2021 Annual Ballot details. The ballot is now open to single golfers as well golfing groups from 2 to 8 golfers. The tee times are allocated in a lottery style with those who are successful being notified by mid-October. Your entry into this ballot must include a second round on one of the other St Andrews Links courses such as the New, Jubilee or Castle and if successful you will pay the total cost of the two rounds in advance – depending on what other course you chose from around £320 (2021 exact prices will be announced later this spring) per person by the end of November. Tee times are also available in Low (01 Nov to 31 Mar) and Shoulder (1-14 April and 14-31 October) seasons. While a tour operator may not enter the ballot for you they may assist and also plan your additional itinerary around your secured time. Even if you are unsuccessful in gaining a guaranteed time there are other ways to play and a visit to Scotland for golf is still a fantastic experience without playing the Old Course.
Daily Ballot This ballot offers around half the available tee times daily for the Old Course to those who haven’t been able to book it in advance. The times are balloted two days (48 hours) in advance and a tour operator can assist in entering your request with the St Andrews Links Trust. Your ballot form needs to be submitted before 2PM two days before you wish to play the Old Course and you will be made aware if you have been successful or not after 5PM that day. Remember there is no play on the Old Course on Sundays, but it’s a great day to walk the hallowed fairways and plan your strategy for when you do tee it up. On this Daily Ballot please note that there is a two-golfer minimum and an eight-golfer maximum for the request. There is no premium or discount for green fees on ballot times they are charged at rack rate for the season. You are not required to pay to play another Links Trust Course when successful on the ballot. Staying several days in the area increases your success level. Many area courses too will work with you to adjust confirmed tee times should you be successful on the ballot. Please note
that ballot requests have increased in recent years and with limited availability in June and July the ballot will probably be oversubscribed most days.
Single Golfer Walk Up This method is the best for single golfers wanting to play the Old Course who have not been successful in the Annual Private Ballot as they are not eligible for the Daily Ballot process. For the best chance of getting a tee time it is advised that you arrive as early as possibly, even as early as 3AM during the summer high season! You are waiting for space in other peoples 2 balls and 3 balls, so be prepared to play golf with other people. This is the best method when you have a spare day during your trip and want to chance your luck. The price is the Old Course standard green fee. You may find you get onto the course reasonably quick or on the other hand you could wait all day to no success. Again, expect this method to be more crowded than usual in 2021.
Winter Package
(1st November to 31st March) A winter package guarantees you an Old Course tee time at a reduced rate. The dates for these packages run from the 1st November to the 31st March and the price depends on the dates and courses you wish to play. This method requires that you book tee times on two other Links Trust courses as well as staying in a local hotel. You should be aware that play will be from mats on all fairways, however, it is a fantastic value way to experience the Old Course. And yes Scotland does get some lovely sunny days throughout the winter however there are limited tee times due to limited daylight.
Sundays On a Sunday you can do just about anything on the Old Course but golf! Keep this in mind when you are planning your trip. It is a fantastic day to explore the Old Course at your own pace, walking and history tours are available. One unique experience is to walk the course in reverse (1st tee to 17th green, 2nd tee to 16th green, etc.) the way the course was originally played. Again, while playing the Old Course is for many a bucket list experience trust me when I say just being on any links in Scotland will satisfy the soul of the most avid golfer. 47

A Timeless Tradition Refreshingly pure,
fundamentally sound, and forever relevant. Those are three ways to describe the Belvedere Golf Club (5731 Marion Center Road, Charlevoix, Michigan) – located roughly 90 minutes north of Traverse City. Located not far from the shores of Lake Michigan, the Belvedere Golf Club -- www.belvederegolfclub.com; 231-5472611 -- was organized in August 1925 and opened for play on July 1, 1927. The course was designed by William Watson. In addition to being this golf course’s original designer, Watson was the course’s first professional. It’s worth noting that on July 7, 2017, Belvedere’s membership rededicated the course to the memory of Watson. The restoration of Belvedere, a private par-72 layout that encourages public play, was made possible when Watson’s long-lost original drawings were found in an early 20th Century building in Charlevoix. The pro shop at Belvedere is definitely worth a visit. In addition to showcas-

135 major titles to their names -- have played at Belvedere. “Only ‘major’ champions make it to the Belvedere pro shop wall,” says Belvedere Golf Club’s head pro Dennis “Marty” Joy, II. This golf course was also the summer golf home for Tom Watson when he was a young boy. When his family made their annual summer vacation trip to northern Michigan, the young Tom would spend many hours playing golf at Belvedere. According to Joy, Watson summered with his family at nearby Walloon Lake, starting when he was a little boy until after college. He would play the 9-hole Walloon Lake CC by himself, but when his father (Raymond) wanted to play golf, he would go to Belvedere Golf Club and take Tom with him. “Tom is still a member,” adds Joy. “To this day, Tom calls Belvedere Golf Club his third favorite golf club in the United States behind Augusta National and Pebble Beach.” The 2020 golf season at Belvedere will see a changing of the guards, so to speak, in the superintendent’s posiGolf Central • Volume 20, Issue 11

Caplan is prepared for the challenge of getting the course ready as soon as Old Man Winter finally goes away. “Winter in Charlevoix, at times, seems never ending,” says Caplan. “It’s not uncommon to see snow as late as the end of April. Nevertheless, it’s important for us to hit the ground running to prepare the course following a deep winter slumber.” To be successful as the super at Belvedere requires timing and teamwork. “There is a small window between full snow melt and golfers putting a peg in the ground,” states Caplan. “Preparing the course requires a plan of attack, proactive thinking, and willingness to adapt to a curveball or two. It’s our privilege to ready the historic Belvedere course each spring, as it has been done for almost a century now. The ultimate reward for myself and the team is the return of golfers and providing conditions for the
beautiful game to be enjoyed by all.” Everything about Belvedere makes sense and was designed with an efficient, conservative flair. While the terrain of the course is not flat, the hills and valleys are quite manageable. When you play Belvedere, avoid the creek that comes into play on three of the first

And, enjoy the 16th hole – a short, uphill, 364-yard par four featuring the smallest green on the course, where some putts actually will roll off the green, if you are too bold with your first putt. Another interesting aspect of Belvedere is its affiliation with hickory golf clubs. Every year, the Belvedere Hickory Open is contested at Belvedere. This event is one of five nationally recognized tournaments that the Society of Hickory Golfers selects as a “Major Hickory” championship. Belvedere is such a

popular hickory venue that it hosted the 2019 U.S. Hickory Open, the national championship for hickory golf. A record field of 120 players participated. When you play Belvedere, you’ll quickly see that William Watson was pragmatic with his decision making as this course remains a first-class and well-designed place to hone your shotmaking skills. The layout of Belvedere made sense back in the early 1920s and it continues to make sense today. William Watson was a visionary architect who was ahead of his time. As recently as 2016, the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association named Belvedere as the 2016 Michigan Course of the Year. Clearly, Belvedere continues to be refreshingly pure, fundamentally sound, and forever relevant.

Beman Award winners The Northeast Florida golf community has an annual Celebration of Golf banquet and there were 330 in the TPC Sawgrass ballroom in February for fellowship and to honor award winners in the various associations. The major recognition is the Deane Beman Award, which goes to a person who has made a longtime contribution to golf in the area and five recipients — past and present — were there. From the left: • Herb Peyton, a major force in the business community whose outreach includes sponsorships of the Gate Invitational and Gate Senior tournaments, the area's best golf events. • Former PGA Tour Commissioner Beman himself, who was the first winner. • Anne Nimnicht, the only person to chair an event on the PGA Tour's three major circuits. • John Hayt, who has been the major donor/cheerleader for the University of North Florida's very successful golf program. He led the effort to build a top-flight training center that's also open to the public. • This year's winner, John Tucker, who led the community effort to attract the PGA Tour to return to Jacksonville in the 1960s (Great Jacksonville Open) and, a decade later, the Tour itself and what is now the PLAYERS. Not present was Joe Louis Barrow, the former head of the national First Tee organization, who had an out-of-town conflict.

It was inevitable that the PGA Tour, like every other major sports organization, would have to dip its putters into the gambling world. But, it was a bit surprising — and smart — that they addressed the subject head-on with a comprehensive press release. Betting is coming to almost every state. Politicians will offer little resistance because a) this is more money to tax and b) the gambling interests are heavy campaign donors. It will be fairly clean, too, using the internet and existing parimutuel facilities. It isn't difficult to see that gambling will be part of our sports world and you'll be smart to approach it on your terms. That's what the Tour is doing. Oddly, one of the toughest states to crack is Florida, the Tour's home and a prominent state in most major sports organizations. The main opposition is an uncomfortable (but efficient) alliance of the Baptist Church (gambling is unholy,) the Seminole Indians (gambling is a major profit center as the state's only casinos are on Indian land) and Walt Disney (gambling is a very un-Mickeylike business.) But, all three have been bought off before. It will just take a little more time.
Media stuff: • If you know Peter Kostis, please tell him to zip it. His expiration time was long past. • Has the PGA Tour told CBS to play nice? The squeaky wheels of Kostis and Gary McCord are gone, Davis Love III is a vanilla milkshake and Amanda Balionis needs to order a cheerleader uniform. • In an era when businesses are moving south, it's hard to believe The Golf Channel is packing up its Orlando bags and heading for Connecticut. • Isn't Golf Channel co-founder Arnold Palmer banging his glassful of Ketel One on the Elysian Fields Country Club bar? And you'll hear the howl all the way down here if the PGA Tour shuffles his tournament to the fall purgatory. • You know daily newspaper golf writing is almost dead when you check the selection committee names for the World Golf Hall of Fame and the only print journalist is a guy from the Daily Mail in London. • We take TV golf for granted today but Deane Beman will remind you that, when he became PGA Tour commissioner in 1974, there was more live bowling on television than golf. • Recent poll asked, “Are you glad or sad that Johnny Miller retired ?” Two thirds: glad.

Experience Relaxing Golf in the North Georgia Foothills Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Clarksville, GA you’ll find Apple Mountain Golf Club, an 18hole mountain golf course that was nominated by Golf Digest as “Best New Public Course of 2000.” The course winds its way through the rolling foothills and features several elevation changes on the front nine. The back nine is a lot flatter and more wide open, with several streams and wetlands that come into play. From the back tees, Apple Mountain plays 6,903 yards to a par of 71, with a course rating of 68.8 and a slope of 114. From back here you’ll face several long forced carries off the tee and need to hit accurate approach shots into medium-sized greens with subtle breaks and undulations if you want to score well. In all, there are 4 sets of tees: White (5,902/66.9/108), Gold (5,105/63.4/104) and Red (5,003/67.6/110). Choose the distance that’s right for your game and you’re sure to have a great time. I had the opportunity to speak with Fred Williams, who’s been the Superintendent at Apple Mountain Golf Club since 2004. Fred said that the course is built on an old farm and the soil is rich and fertile which makes growing grass a breeze. He hasn’t been plagued with a lot of the insect and infestation problems some of the courses in the area have and - knock on wood – he doesn’t have them this year. Apple Mountain is one of the most talked-about golf courses in the area, with the picturesque North Georgia Mountains serving as a backdrop. At Apple Mountain Golf Club, you’ll find bent grass greens, Bermuda fairways, and lots of silver pine trees framing the fairways, helping you to create a golf adventure that is second to none! Once you realize this is a course, you’ll want 56
to play over and over, ask about their Frequent Golfer Card in the pro shop. With it, for every 5 rounds you play, your 6th round is free. It’s a great deal if you live in the area or visit frequently. There are several memorable holes at Apple Mountain Golf Club starting with the first, a par 5 that plays 490 yards from the back tees. It’s a slight dogleg right with a narrow fairway. Find it off the tee with a good drive and you’ll have a chance to go for the green in two and get your round started on the right foot. Anything left will likely be in the trees so favor the right side. Trees start to come into play on the right about 150 yards from the green. A single bunker guards the front right side of this small, undulated green. Although the 3rd hole is a long par 4 that plays 439 yards, it is downhill and could be a great opportunity to hit the longest drive of your life! There are no bunkers guarding the green so swing away! Number 6 is a long par 3 with perhaps the most daunting tee shot
on the course. It’s 185 yards from the back tees, uphill over wetlands with a deep, cavernous pot bunker in the middle. It’s all carry, so just choose the right club and trust your swing. The finishing hole on the outward 9 is a 479-yard dogleg right par 5. Play your tee shot downhill from an elevated tee box and then the rest of the hole is straight uphill. Those trying to go for the green in two will have to carry it on due to the two large bunkers in the middle of the fairway. With back to back par 5s at 9 and 10, it’s a great time to pick up a couple of shots if you can put a couple of good holes together. Number 10 is a short par 5 that plays 465 yards from the back tees; a good drive and a hybrid or fairway wood may be all you need. Again, there are no bunkers guarding the green; in fact, there are only about 15 on the entire course – so swing away! Number 11 is a long par 4 that plays over 400 yards from the back tees; the good news is that it’s downhill. With woods all down the right side and the fairway sloping right to left, your best play is down the left side. The green is well protected with grass bunkers; miss it and up and down can be a tough make. Number 13 is the first par 3 on the backside and although it plays downhill, it still plays long. The green is protected with a bunkers in the front guarding both sides. At 195 yards from the back tees, it will take a good tee shot to find the green and make par or better. Number 17 is a beast of a par 5, playing 514 yards uphill, from the back tees; it will take three good shots to get on the green. You’ll encounter pot bunkers and fairway bunkers along the way. The course at Apple Mountain Golf Club isn’t going to beat you up; it was designed to allow golfers to enjoy the game, not rush through and thoroughly frustrate them. One thing you’ll learn about mountain golf is that the scorecard may say it’s a 490-yard par 5, but odds are that it could play considerably more or less! Typically, the short holes play longer and the longer holes play shorter. At Apple Mountain, there is a good variety of both, so bring your best game! SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Mike Bellino My very first job was a cart boy at Wekiva Golf Club in 1984 when I was 14 years old. My best friend Ed Batcheller and I worked there until graduation high school. It was a great introduction to the golf industry working under Kayo Bowman a PGA Professional and a Class A Superintendent. We both decided then we would make a career out of it and went to Lake City to get our A.S. in Golf Course Operations. I have been in the golf business in Central Florida for over 35 years. I am very thankful for the people and clubs that I was lucky enough to be a part of. I am currently the Golf Course Superintendent at Heathrow Country Club proudly owned by Concert Golf Partners. I can’t think of anything else I would rather do than be a husband, father and a grass farmer. I have always had the support of my beautiful wife Debbie and our two awesome kids Sophia and Nick. I feel fortunate having Sunniland located less than 5 miles from our first tee. Billy G has been a great asset to Heathrow and me always having good advice and top quality fertilizer. 60

Green Spaces in Crowded Places an intense surveying period, lasting no more than a week, where golf clubs host a group of volunteers to inventory the living matter on their property - plants, fungi, insects and animals included. But the initiative doesn’t stop there; after the event, Audubon International analyzes the number of species seen, and identifies those that are considered threatened or endangered. One of our many goals is to show the world what a valuable resource sustainable golf courses are, all while collecting data that may be used for environmental analysis in the future. Participants can win one of three awards post BioBlitz – greatest biodiversity, greatest number of participants, and best photo from the event. Audubon International, a not-forprofit organization, focuses it efforts ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources by offering environmental certification programs where the natural world meets the built environment, also known as green space(s). The reaches of green space in an urban environment stretch beyond that of humans; this space also acts as a refuge for wildlife that would otherwise be limited within the confines of a developed area. These pockets of green space provide some of the richest species diversity known to exist in a built area. 64

Annual Bluegrass Weevil is an Expanding Problem Bayer solutions: •
Dylox® - (AMVAC) provides quick knockdown and control of both ABW adults and larvae. It is an effective rotational product with no documented cases of resistance in ABW.
•
Merit® - provides longer term control of ABW larvae as well as white grubs
• Adult Bluegrass Weevil more applications - targeted for adults, pyrethroids were once effective but now resistant ABW populations are common throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic. Now, several insecticide applications are required for maximum control of emerging adults, their offspring, and summer generations.
Tetrinilliprole™ (coming soon) – A new active ingredient from Bayer has shown effective control of ABW larvae at all life stages in research trials conducted over the past several years with key university cooperators. Tetraniliprole has also shown excellent long-term control of other important pests like white grubs, caterpillars, and chinch bugs. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting new solution. Tetraniliprole is not yet registered and not yet for sale.
Controlling
annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) is tough. Multiple generations, insecticide resistance, and infestations expanding southward and westward are three reasons why superintendents must stay on top of this pest.
ABW larvae under damaged turf
Multiple generations
– two generations are typical in the Northeast, only one generation causes damage farther north, and up to four generations are typical in more southern regions
Complex life cycles
– adults overwinter in surrounding wooded areas and move to turf, laying as many as 90 eggs, with larvae causing the primary damage to turf stands. Development is largely determined by temperature in microenvironments of the golf course causing asynchronous life stages over time
Control aimed at all stages – spring adults are targeted as well as first generation larvae to limit future generations Resistance to pyrethroids requires
