From the Helm

Hi from chilly Christchurch! As the days get shorter and colder, it means it must be time to start thinking about sailing North for winter! Cecile, Gemma and I have been busy over the last month with all the Pacific Rally preparations for the upcoming season! With over 160 vessels now registered - all going in various different directions and on different dates, it is going to be lots of fun up in the Islands this season!

OMG!!!! are you the ONLY boat going to the Pacific this season that isn’t on the rally?! There is still time to join us and be part of all the fun! :)

Cecile has been busy working with lots of our fabulous partners on some fun & social predeparture events for our rally participants to connect with each other before they set off this season

Thanks so much to the Boatworks in the Gold Coast, Marsden Cove Marina and Bay of Islands Marina & Opua Cruising Club for hosting us and all our rally partners for putting on some fantastic events for the rally participants to enjoy.

And thanks to our generous partners, we also have some incredible inclusions & discounts for our rally participants I think if you take advantage of all the great deals, going on the rally would work out a lot cheaper than doing it yourself!

So you save time, save money, save lots of hassle, get masses of information, have lots of fun and get connected with everyone else heading up to the Islands this season!

With Tonga’s 7.3 earthquake and tsunami warning yesterday morning, also got me thinking about the benefits of being on the rally and having someone (us!) you can call for support and advice when things go wrong The riots in New Caledonia last year, the boarding & searches of vessels in Fiji last season were a good example of this too Stuff can and does often happen in the Islands and when you are on the rally, you know that we’ve always got your best interests at heart and can do lots of things to help support you when things don’t quite go to plan!

If you are a member already, login now to read our latest update with some tips on how to deal with a tsunami threat here.

(Or you could just be all by yourself, missing out on all the action, missing all the fun events, wondering what is going on, struggling with the paperwork, upsetting the locals with your accidental cultural faux pas, struggling with all the paperwork and formalities, not knowing about all the best anchorages, and spending loads of time on your computer researching stuff when you could have had it all provided, and paying way more than you need to for marina fees and other boat gear along the way!) :)

You can still sail independently - the dates and destinations are all flexible, or sail with the various groups going in different directions - the choice is yours! It really is a no-brainer! If you aren’t on the rally you are doing it the hard way Join us on the Pacific Rally here!

If you are planning on heading up to the Islands in future years, and are keen to make a start on your preparations, join us as a member for just NZD$129.00 per annum, and you can tap in to our fabulous training, resources and learning material to help you start getting prepared.

Or how about joining our CrewSeeker page and getting some offshore experience to add to your Sailing CV? There are lots of opportunities that come up all the time.

I was also honoured last weekend to speak at the Women Who Sail Australia Gathering on the Bay event. This is a fantastic sailing conference that takes place in Port Stephens every year, where some incredible women sailors can connect and encourage one another in all kinds of sailing adventures Thanks to Shelley and her team for putting on another fantastic event.

I am also super excited to be partnering with SeaKeepers & Citizens of the Sea again this season. Some of the Pacific Rally boats will be volunteering to collect Ocean eDNA samples as they sail across the oceans to help scientists to study what is out there Last year our sailors have been able to send richer data more cost effectively than has ever been possible We have demonstrated that citizen scientists can generate data at an unprecedented scale, identifying 1 billion DNA sequences from 600 samples across 1.5 million square kilometres of ocean. This is one of the biggest data sets ever collected! Join us on the Pacific Rally to be part of this fantastic program! Full training & all the equipment is given and you’ll be part of a really fun program of events throughout the season

Further to our advocacy work on updating the Pacific Nation’s officials with the movements of yachties through the Pacific, this month, we have got NZ Customs updating us on Maritime Crime issues in the Pacific and things to look out for this season. They are presenting a webinar for our members this month. If you aren’t a member and would like to be part of the the discussion, you can join us here!

The South Island Rally participants have been having lots of fun all around the South Island. Catching fish, meeting the locals, going on some awesome hikes, doing some epic sailing. Some have completed their NZ circumnavigation and are heading home now. The cover photo is one of our favourite spots in Stewart Island and there are lots more pics of their adventures in the sailing social pages

I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine. I love putting it together each month, and thanks to all our fabulous contributors. If you’ve got a story to share or a great photo you’ve taken, please send it through! I’d love to include it in the next edition

Henri-Lloyd Returns to New Zealand and Australia: A New Era for Performance Sailing Gear

After a five-year absence, Henri-Lloyd, the legendary British sailing brand, is making a triumphant return to New Zealand and Australia. The Chandlery, based in Russell, Bay of Islands, is at the forefront of this exciting revival, bringing Henri-Lloyd’s highperformance, stylish, and sustainable sailing and lifestyle apparel back to the region’s passionate marine community.

For over seven decades, Henri-Lloyd has been synonymous with innovation in the sailing world, setting the benchmark for technical excellence and durability. The latest collection continues this legacy, featuring cutting-edge advancements such as PFCfree waterproofing, four-way stretch fabrics, 100% recycled materials, ergonomic designs, high-visibility detailing, and UV protection. Designed to meet the demands of sailors, teams, and marine enthusiasts, Henri-Lloyd remains the brand of choice for those who demand both functionality and style.

Australia and New Zealand’s deep connection to the ocean makes the return of HenriLloyd particularly meaningful. The brand’s commitment to safer, faster, and more sustainable sailing perfectly aligns with the values of the region’s thriving boating community. The Chandlery, a key player in this reintroduction, is proud to support the resurgence of Henri-Lloyd, ensuring that Kiwi and Aussie sailors once again have access to this world-class gear.

Henri-Lloyd’s presence will also be felt within the cruising community as they partner with Island Cruising and the Down Under Rally this year. This collaboration underscores the brand’s dedication to supporting sailors at every level, from weekend cruisers to professional racers. Whether on the water or ashore, Henri-Lloyd’s latest collection is designed to keep you performing at your best while embracing the freedom and adventure of life at sea.

The Chandlery, in collaboration with Henri-Lloyd Australia are leading the charge on Henri-Lloyd’s return to New Zealand and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. For sailors and marine enthusiasts, this is more than just a brand revival it’s a reaffirmation of the spirit of exploration, innovation, and the timeless pursuit of excellence on the water.

Wet Weather Gear for Passage Sailing: What Actually Works

At the end of March, Warren (CEO of The Chandlery & Swell Marine) took a passage from Opua, New Zealand, to Fiji aboard a Powercat in glorious conditions—flat seas, sunshine, and just enough breeze to keep things interesting.

Now, before the true sailors start tuning out yes, we know, a Powercat isn’t a sailboat. No sails to trim, no tacking angles to debate, and no “earning” your miles the traditional way. But before you write this off as a powerboat story, stick with us—because the lessons from Warren’s trip (and his experience as a commercial skipper aboard traditional sailing yachts) apply just as much to offshore sailing as they do to motoring through.

What became very clear on that passage was that good conditions don’t mean you can skimp on proper gear. Even in calm weather, the sun is brutal, the salt gets everywhere, and the occasional squall can catch you off guard real fast. Warren found that a Dri-Fast long-sleeve tee was an absolute essential—light, breathable, quickdrying, and, most importantly, it kept the UV off without turning him into a portable sauna. Plus, let’s be real you don’t want sunscreen all over your boat, staining the gelcoat, do you?

Then there was the Breeze Gilet, which turned out to be the unexpected MVP of the trip. Not just because it kept his core warm when the wind picked up, but because of the four pockets that meant no more digging through the cockpit for essentials. Phone, headtorch, pen, personal EPIRB—all within easy reach. And, as he put it, "it also kept the white tee white"—which, let’s be honest, is a solid win on any passage.

That was a cruisy island passage—but what about when you’re crossing oceans, battling squalls, or dealing with 2am sail changes in 30 knots? Hopefully, you get champagne sailing, but let’s be real—you still need the right gear.

Seven pockets, including double fleece-lined handwarmer pockets, so you’re not stuffing freezing fingers into damp gloves.

Chunky zips that don’t jam up with salt. For some extra care, you could spray them afterwards with SaltAway, just to ensure longevity. Double storm flap—because there’s nothing worse than a leak right where you don’t want it.

15k waterproof rating so you’re not sitting in a puddle by sunrise And for the ladies—the Hi-Fit salopettes have a drop-seat design with heavy-duty Vislon® AquaGuard® zips. That means no awkward stripdowns at 2am just to take a quick trip below the deck

Offshore Sailing: What to Wear to Be

Prepared

For passages like New Zealand to Fiji at this time of year, you’re dealing with a bit of everything—cold nights at the start, very warm tropical air at the finish, and a good chance of some proper wet weather in between (Warren got a last-minute downpour on his otherwise tranquil journey, too). So, what should you actually wear?

You’ve got a couple of solid approaches, depending on how you like to layer up:

1. Biscay + Hi-Fit: The Set-and-Forget Option

For those first 2–3 nights offshore, when the wind’s still got some bite and you’re smashing through the first 100–200Nm, you need proper protection. The Biscay Jacket + Coastal Hi-Fit combo is built for the job:

This setup works well if you prefer to keep it simple—pull it on, stay dry, get through the night.

2. The Layering Approach: The Future of Sailing Gear

If you like versatility and gear that adapts, then the Dynamic Range is where it’s at. Waterproof, stretchy, lightweight—it moves with you, keeps you dry, and breathes like a dream, with 20k waterproofness that rivals hardcore offshore gear.

Start with a base layer (NTS Aktiv Lite Pants & Top)—so you’ve got moisture-wicking warmth underneath.

Throw on an Aktiv Stretch Jacket— for those first few cold nights, this adds insulation without bulk.

Top it with the Dynamic Jacket & Salopettes—these handle spray, rain, and everything in between, while still letting you move freely.

This system is game-changing if you like freedom of movement while helming at 3am.

3. Breeze Jackets & Gilets – For When It’s “Wet But Not That Wet”

Not every sailing day requires a full offshore kit. Sometimes it’s just a misty morning, a bit of spray off the bow, or a squally rain shower that passes as fast as it arrived. That’s where the Breeze series comes in—it’s lightweight, quick-drying, and just enough protection without feeling like you’re wearing a storm suit for a drizzle.

Ideal for island-hopping, afternoon squalls and throwing on over a tee when there’s a bit too much breeze for comfort—whether on deck or exploring ashore.

Final Thought: Get Gear That Works (And Keeps Working for Years)

At the end of the day, whether you’re crossing oceans or cruising the islands, having the right wet weather gear makes all the difference. You want to be dry, comfortable, and not regretting your choices halfway through the passage. And if it packs down small, dries fast, and doesn’t stink after three days at sea? Even better.

Luckily, Henri-Lloyd has finally landed back in NZ and AUS, thanks to The Chandlery and Henri-Lloyd Australia. So if your wet weather gear is older than some of your crew members and doesn’t play the ball anymore, maybe it’s time for an upgrade.

Western Australia Cruising Guide

The Western Australian Cruising Guide is regarded as the coastal cruising bible for WA, covering the coast from Darwin to Eucla, including the Christmas and Cocos Islands. This book is a definite “must have†, especially for cruising the Kimberley, with over 650 pages, 230 chartlets and many interesting colour photos The main source of information for this guide is feedback from the hundreds of sailors who have shared their knowledge of this largely unexplored part of the coast.

The 5th edition, now in its fifth update (v5.5), was a major revision of the 4th edition published in 2014. It includes dozens of new diagrams and several hundred new items of information. The first part of the guide covers weather, tides, passage planning, communications, emergency services, marine animals and government departments. The second part contains specific pilotage information on many anchorages, showing suitable spots to anchor, dangers, the amount of protection, tidal information, places of interest, history of the area, and local contact details

The guide is available in two electronic formats, downloadable without charge:

The upcoming 2025 Island Cruising Pacific Rally, due to depart New Zealand next month, marks a significant milestone for the 14 female skippers among its 125 registered vessels.

This is the most female skippers the Pacific Rally has seen in its 40-year history.

This upward trend has been building steadily, from two female skippers out of 42 boats in 2022, to six out of 93 in 2023, and six out of 160 in 2024.

The 2025 rally’s numbers represent not just a statistical jump, but a shift in inclusiveness of a previously male-dominated sport.

"Each individual skipper has her own unique story," Viki Moore, the director of Island Cruising New Zealand, explained.

"Often the women are the ones who’ve had the dream, they’ve got the boat, and their partner is along for the ride – just as you see in many male-skippered boats, with their partners as firstmates."

Moore, who took on the Island Cruising Rally business after obtaining her offshore yacht master qualification in 2021, has witnessed the evolution of attitudes first-hand.

Meet our Members - Mel Yeomans

DeckHardware are distributors of Sailing Marine and Industrial Brands in Australia and the region We are a family owned business with my Parents and I purchasing DeckHardware in December 2006 My name is Mel Yeomans and this is a little glimpse into our journey - The DeckHardware Story

Back in 2006 my Mum Robyn had worked for the previous owner Carl Crafoord for well over a decade I began doing part-time work on their website and marketing in 2005 I did this while working in retail as I needed to help cover the costs of being a boat owner of a 10m yacht in my 20's

In 2006, the company went through some changes and I talked with my parents about the idea, next thing we knew we were the proud owners of DeckHardware! Sadly my yacht has since turned into stock but reading stories from the likes of Island Cruising certainly has me more than keen to keep working on the goal of buying one again in the future

So who are we and just how did we go from working at DeckHardware to being owners? I guess it starts with growing up in a family where both my Grandfathers owned yachts One was built for racing, the other cruising so there was always a choice. I don't remember learning to steer, or call the breeze as we spent so much time on the water it was second nature

Of course growing up once old enough I was put straight into a dinghy which my grandfather's built together that could be used for rowing and sailing before heading into Manly Juniors and Flying 11's

Needless to say both my parents grew up sailing and going away on boats and Ocean Racing was just normal for us My Dad Phil is a former boat builder having built several thousand Lasers in the 70's as well as a few Trailer Yachts

I would listen to stories of the races overseas my Grandpa Peter did who became known as a great marine artist and my Mum's younger brother Jaime Dibble who went off to sail around the world My Uncle Jai's longest part of the journey in one stretch was 18 days onboard

My parents would always talk about how my personality would change whenever they would get me near the water Give me the helm of a boat and I was always confident

By my teenage years I was sailing 4 days a week as I managed to go Wednesday sailing instead of taking part in organised school sport This was approved by the school and it was during these Wednesdays I learnt valuable lessons including how to strip a winch. Dad also taught me how to fix my Flying 11 with gelcoat during the build process

It was at this time during the 90's that mum worked for David Bray at his yacht brokerage on Pittwater, before heading to work for Carl at DeckHardware

When we purchased DeckHardware in 2006 we started with Four brands, that are still with us Today We have worked hard to grow DeckHardware and are very proud of this As many would know being small businesses owners we don't get the time off and work strange hours outside our warehouse hours but what we do get to enjoy is seeing so many new people being introduced to the sport and the chance to talk to sailors on a daily basis

I spend time with suppliers visiting them at the Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam As well as having the opportunity to visit the London, Dusseldorf and Annapolis Boat Shows outside our region over the years and I hope to get back to Dusseldorf as it was amazing.

This approach ensures that our customers receive valuable insights and knowledge along with the products from well-known marine brands By providing as much information as possible, we empower customers to make informed decisions, enhance their understanding, and foster a deeper connection with our brand Our website used by end users as well as our trade customers evolves daily.

Growing up in Sailing many in the industry have known me for decades or grown up with me It is just a part of what makes this special

As a distributor, we take immense pride in fostering strong and beneficial relationships with a diverse array of partners in the marine industry. Our Stockists include Chandleries, Riggers, Sailmakers, Boat Builders and more. Our Trade customers are essential in not only the DeckHardware business but the marine industry Skilled trade and knowledgeable people within the industry are vital to boat owners and the future of those who spend time on the water

Servicing Your Windlass

Windlasses are quite simple machines and the service check is relatively straightforward and shouldn’t be feared, it’s just hard work in sometimes awkward location.

More than likely very little service is needed however if something has gone wrong, it’s definitely required. If possible, find someone who has done one before and enlist their help. Karl from SV Salsa was our hero and saviour

Here's how to go about it:

Decide if you need to take the windlass off or are able to service it in place

You need to see inside the covers for a start.

Check for wear on the shaft for the gypsy. If no wobble… it’s all good.

Clean up clutch plates and very lightly lubricate surface if needed

Check inside the electric motor, any sign of oil means the oil seal through to the gearing has been compromised and needs replacing.

These can be pushed / tapped out fairly easily once you remove the electric motor - unbolt and slide out.

Oil seals are standard sizes and can be bought easily from engineering seals and bearing shops, much cheaper than kits.

Check the bushes for wear on the electric motor. These pop out after releasing the spring tensioner.

Check internal oil, if possible, for water. It will be milky if compromised, drain and replace if needed.

My windlass is very old original windlass and it was a long time between services We discovered it had a broken oil seal and water had got inside the windlass housing. The electric motor was soaked in oil and required a big clean up and new seal only.

The gearing block / bearings was fine so just needed oil.

Corrosion due to salt water getting in meant I needed to replace and re-tap some bolt holes as well as carefully apply sealant when reassembling.

As bad as it was, the gearing was fine

I'm confident this old windlass is good for years to come however will be servicing much more regularly now.

You should service your windlass every two years but I will check ours again in a year or sooner to double-check the seals that we replaced as the shaft had got so worn.

Thanks to Karl from Salsa - another Pacific Rally participant for his guidance and support in this project!

Sue & Ron are kiwis and were on the Pacific Rally 2024 and are now cruising the East Coast of Australia on board their yacht Eudora.

VHF & MMSI

We often answer questions about radio licences and MMSI numbers, so I've included some information below to provide some of the most commonly sought after information.

Recreational Boating

A qualified operator must be on board if the vessel carries a marine radio. This applies both in Australia and internationally.

In Australia, the appropriate qualification for marine VHF radio is the Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP), which is also valid for international use. If the vessel carries an MF/HF and a VHF radio, the operator must hold the Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP).

(in New Zealand it is called the MSROC or MRROC)

International Boating

If you need to provide an International Certificate of Competence (ICC - for those going sailing in Europe), you will usually be asked to submit a copy of your marine VHF radio licence (SROCP). The marine radio licencing process with Above and Beyond Boating is valid globally, and you don't need to be an Australian citizen or in Australia to complete the qualification.

MMSI Numbers

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on your VHF Radio will not work without a MMSI Number. To obtain an MMSI number, you need a marine radio licence (either an SROCP or LROCP qualification in AU or MSROC or MRROC in NZ).

Australian vessels should have an MMSI number starting with 503... New Zealand vessels should have an MMSI number starting with 512...

Some older or overseas qualifications may be accepted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as long as they include DSC in the training and certification process. This should be confirmed with AMSA on an individual basis.

Australian Commercial Boating

Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal (NC) or Sailing Master Coastal - The SROCP meets the minimum marine radio qualification requirements.

Sailing Master Offshore NC, Master <24 m NC, Master <45m NC, and Master <100 m NC - The LROCP is the required qualification for marine radio operation.

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean - The SROCP is the required qualification for marine radio operation; however, to use the qualification commercially, you will need an LROCP in Australia. For most of the rest of the world, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore can be used commercially with only an SROCP.

While an SROCP suffices for several of these qualifications, as you progress toward commercial certifications, the LROCP becomes mandatory. In most instances, obtaining the LROCP from the beginning is more practical when pursuing commercial maritime qualifications. Book

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australian non-commercial Vessel Survey

Overview of results:

We received a total of 120 responses covering a broad range of views, which is exactly what we were hoping for.

Overall, we received general support for options to manage marine biosecurity risk that will help protect Australia's marine environments.

Responders preferred the option to ‘Clean all biofouling prior to arrival’ with 74% noting they were ‘highly likely’ or ‘somewhat likely’ to adopt it

‘Biofouling management plan and record book’ was the second preferred option with 50% responding ‘highly likely’ or ‘somewhat likely’.

Other responses included suggestions for amended and alternative options to manage biofouling and also raised other issues.

These include issues related to antifouling coating and haul out facility availability, and alignment with other countries’ requirements.

There was a lot of feedback to make the options as simplistic as possible with clear instructions.

We will be considering all the feedback and taking on board suggestions that were practical and align with Australia’s biofouling management objectives.

We will keep you updated with any changes for recreational vessels as they come to hand. In the meantime - Island Cruising recommends you practice good hull hygiene - always have a clean hull before setting off to your next destination!

Meet Our Members CrewSeeker

Laura Prickett

Ever since I was little I was fascinated by boats and sailing. I grew up sailing a variety of dinghies and reading books such as ‘Swallows and Amazons’. Sailing adventures were a huge part of my childhood. However, there was one dream I had always wanted to do, but seemed so out of reach. I dreamed of sailing out into the ocean until there was no land in sight. The idea of sailing from one country to another was fascinating and exciting. Last year, I finally got the opportunity to crew on a variety of boats across the Pacific thanks to the Island Cruising CrewSeeker service.

I am happy to say I did not have the crazy adventures my child self expected, with pirates, cyclones and getting lost at sea. However, even without these crazy adventures the ocean is a beautiful and diverse place. If you gaze at it long enough, it will reward you with amazing experiences.

There was a surprising amount of life out at sea. We were never alone as there were always birds darting across the waves. In FIji I watched flying fish skimming through the air while tuna leaped after them from below, turning (mostly) perfect flips. On my way into Coffs harbour (Australia) I saw the first whale only a meter away from me. After that there were so many whales that I stopped bothering to count them. For two days they waved their fins at us as we sailed through.

My favorite time at sea had to be night watch. Distant lightning storms hinted that various islands were just over the horizon. Spectacular star scapes filled with shooting stars. Nightly phosphorescence reminiscent of fairly lights scattered through the waves. I always loved it when my watch aligned with the moon rise or set as it was always so large and orange! I will never forget the sunrise at the end of one night watch on our way into Australia. To my surprise, instead of the usual bright yellow sun, an extremely baby pink sun rose instead! We assumed this was due to red dust from

I was so lucky to be able to go on such a great adventure. If you are wondering weather you should go on the Pacific Rally in the future, I highly recommend it. Not only was the sailing great, but the information and support given by Island Cruising was fantastic. Thank you to all of the boat owners who let me crew for them, and to Viki and her team for creating such an awesome event.

The tragic loss of the HMNZS Manawanui has made headlines in the last year, but there is another Manawanui moored in Opua and her story is a more positive one.

Let me explain:

In October 2023 cyclone Lola flattened the remote Island of Tikopia in the Te Motu province in the Solomon Islands. Cyclones are of course not an unusual occurrence in the tropical Islands and the Tikopians , in their 3000- year history, have learned to prepare themselves for these events. The preparation of underground food storage is very much part of their cultural heritage. Sago palms and breadfruit trees are needed for these emergency rations that need to last until other crop , like taro bananas or cassava have the chance to regrow.

But in the last few years cyclones have been more frequent and more violent The important trees do not have the time to recover and when Lola hit there was no emergency food available.

The Bay of Island Marina dock master Monika and her partner Martin have been twice to Tikopia and have forged lasting friendships with some of the islanders and in particular with the young chief Ariki Kafika. Aware of the path of Lola and deeply worried about the fate of her friends, Monika established contact with a yacht , equipped with Starlink, in Vanuatu and convinced the owners to sail to Tikopia. This brought not only the first pictures from the destruction of Tikopia to the outside world, but also allowed Ariki Kafika and the other chefs on Tikopia to deliver a handwritten letter to Monika, Martin and other friends asking for un bureaucratic help.

The concept of long lasting help towards climate change adaptation for the affected communities became increasingly urgent as the initiative to collect funds and send these to the Solomon island end in the loss of the collected money in some obscure promises

What if the locals of other Island in the Temotu group could help each other in the event of a disaster If they had their own small sailing cargo vessel, and if they had means to communicate with each other, would they be prepared to come to the help of their neighbours

Very quickly this idea gained support within an international group of friends and in August of this year, the local charter boat, the 22m ketch with the fitting name SV Manawanui ( big heart) will set sails , bound for Temotu The Manawanui Project was born Her crew has already arranged discussions with many of the chiefs on all the island of the group

Should the idea of self help to become more resilient against climate change find the support among these chiefs, then the Manawanui Project will , under the watchful eyes of the ex police commander of the Solomon island , Luke Vaikawi ,train a team of locals to man and maintain the SV Manawanui. After two more voyages in the following years the newly formed charity The Manawanui Project will hand the vessel over to a local team. This local team will then have the means to offer fast and efficient emergency help. This might not only save lives, but it will help to keep the local traditions of food preservation alive and it will also offer opportunities for trade, employment and small ecotourism.

Catherine Rocheteau is the Director of the Polynesian Directorate of Maritime Affairs (DPAM). Her role is to oversee and coordinate all projects related to the management of maritime activities in Polynesian waters.

Passionate about the sea and committed to preserving our natural heritage, I strive to balance the development of boating with the protection of the marine environment and the needs of local communities. Through the ESCALES initiative, our ambition is to provide a clear, respectful, and harmonious organization for an activity that is rapidly growing.

As Director of DPAM, her mission is to oversee the implementation of the new regulations in collaboration with various stakeholders. This initiative goes far beyond a simple legislative framework— it involves rethinking how we welcome sailors while respecting the unique environmental and cultural balance of Polynesia.

These new regulations are not just restrictions—they represent an opportunity to create a sustainable framework. The goal is to anticipate future challenges by establishing a system that manages maritime traffic while enhancing Polynesia’s natural and cultural heritage. Protecting the lagoons means preserving a vital part of Polynesian identity and ensuring that future generations can also enjoy these wonders.

The growing number of boaters in Polynesian waters has made structured management of stopovers essential.

You can read all the details of the regulations on the Navily website here.

PREDICTWIND DATAHUB NOW HELPS BOATIES AVOID

Leading Marine Weather Forecaster Introduces Whale Watch Technology. PredictWind, a leading provider of marine weather forecasting solutions, has announced a new feature for its DataHub platform: Whale Watch. This innovative tool, a version of Over the Horizon AIS, helps boaties identify and avoid whales, reducing the risk of ship strikes and contributing to marine conservation efforts.

Whale Watch uses data from Conserve.io’s Whale Alert database to display whale positions as diamond-shaped icons on compatible chartplotters and navigation apps. The DataHub downloads whale sightings reported in the last three days, by default, within a 100-mile radius of the boat, updating this information hourly. Sailors can also report whale sightings through DataHub to contribute to the database and help protect these magnificent creatures.

“We are committed to providing mariners with tools that enhance navigation and safety while promoting responsible ocean stewardship,” said Jon Bilger, PredictWind Founder. “Whale Watch is a significant step in supporting efforts to protect vulnerable marine species, including the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whales.”

Key Features of Whale Watch:

Continuously updated whale positions

Configurable range and update frequency

Integration with popular chartplotters and navigation apps

Ability to report whale sightings

Powered by the Whale Alert database, developed for NOAA and the IFAW

Near-real-time reports from NOAA’s automated drones

Requirements:

DataHub with Firmware 4.24 or later

A GPS connected to DataHub via NMEA2000 or built-in GPS in active status

Compatible chartplotter/app

High-speed internet connection (Starlink, 4/5G LTE, or GO exec)

Whale Watch underscores PredictWind’s shared responsibility to protect marine ecosystems for generations to come.

Faced with the dire warning of a possible catastrophic weather incident as Tropical Cyclone Alfred gathered pace offshore, The Boat Works swung into action, implementing their proven extreme weather strategy to secure the yards, vessels on land and water, and reassure tenants and boat owners.

From February 22 when the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) alerted the public to the tropical low that had begun gathering off Cairns, to 3 March when its effects were being felt in strong winds, record rainfall and high sea swells, the team at The Boat Works had adequate time to strategise and prepare. This advance warning allowed The Boat Works’ team of 30 staff and 100 tenants to take proactive measures in mitigating risks across both facilities, from the 150 in-water service berths to the 300 outof-water allocations, including sheds and hardstand areas.

As well as full-time caretakers on-site, The Boat Works has a full procedural plan that is enacted in extreme weather events: concrete blocking and strapping down boats on the hardstand, double tying vessels, communicating with tenants and owners, checking the River front, rigging inspections of all mast yachts, securing furlings and sail bags, additional fenders and ropes around the boats on water.

Owner, Tony Longhurst said the event brought into sharp focus the importance of “having the right infrastructure in place to securely accommodate over 450 boats in a safe haven, high and dry”. “The Boat Works has 100 on-site sheds so Captains and boat owners have peace of mind knowing their vessels would be hauled out and bunkered down, well-protected from the elements. “Those boats that remained on the water were securely tied with extra ropes and fenders, biminis and tenders were removed, and our team did everything possible to ensure they were safe from debris and collision with other boats moored in the River.”

Shane Subichin, The Boat Works General Manager, said that “communication was crucial”

“Keeping in touch with boat owners, Captains and our on-site partners about preparations was vital to reassuring them we had the procedures in place to take the best possible care of their boats.

“The team at The Boat Works kept in touch around the clock, in case conditions or road closures stopped us from getting to work, so we knew who was assigned to the different tasks.”

Fortunately, the marine trade professionals on-site who chose to carry on pre and during the cyclone were able to continue work in their workshops and sheds, protected from the elements, which ensured very little interruption to projects.

Five of the six travelift machines on-site were moved into place to protect yachts on the hardstand, as was the case for the Oyster 100, Maritimo.

Vessels were hauled out and safely secured on the hardstand and sheltered within the all-weather sheds. Across the facility a total of 400 boats were safeguarded during the extreme weather event, 275 out of the water in sheds and hardstands, and 125 in the water, including the community of liveaboard yachts and owners.

No damage was sustained and business was fully operational again by Monday 10 March.

Owners of vessels berthed at The Boat Works expressed their gratitude, one saying “Having lived through a number of cyclones they are not to be taken lightly. Preparation is key!

“This was our second cyclone on the boat and this time we had some idea of what to do. Being on the hardstand was different from experiences in the past up north in water. The concern for us being up on the blocks was that Wild Fire (a 57 Schionning catamaran) is lighter than most boats her size. We connected with The Boat Works’ shipyard operations and Micah assured us he would place one tonne cement blocks around the boat and strap her down, much to our relief.”

The owners of SV THOR, comment “As the weather forecast changed and the velocity of the wind was potentially up around 60 knots, we decided to try for a berth and staff responded immediately to our request,” they said.

“We were moved into the undercover Watershed berth on 3 March and began preparation, removing all loose items and tying or strapping those that could not be removed.

“As the forecast continued to evolve, it became apparent that 60 knot+ gusts were going to be due east, and as we were ‘nose-in’, this meant that the strongest wind would be from astern. Again, the crew from TBW responded to assist us in turning the boat around, which involved driving out, rotating and coming back in. The guys did a great job, and we re-tied without incident.

“In addition, they also offered us access to the Captains Lounge if the cyclone had made sitting it out on the vessel unbearable. We appreciated the constant contact with The Boat Works’ team checking on us.”

The Boat Works is accessed from the Broadwater and open waters by the Coomera River. The importance of the ongoing dredging program was highlighted in the capacity of the River to take on storm surge and rainfall of this magnitude without rising to the flood levels of previous years. Shane Subichin observed, “This is the fourth time in my 15 years at The Boat Works that we’ve had massive rain events and high tides. But this is the first time that the waters have subsided right on high tide, and that can only be attributed to the enhanced water flow of the Coomera River due to regular dredging. With that amount of rain, we could have had another half a metre here, so it’s been a real relief.”

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is to be commended for its commitment to a continuous dredging program every two years, with the next round of work set to begin this year.

Ben is excited to bring you an update on his upcoming sailing season in Europe, and to give you a closer look at the boat he’ll be racing: the Figaro 3.

Why the Figaro 3 is the Perfect Boat for Offshore Racing:

The Figaro 3 was specifically designed for solo off-shore racing, making it the perfect vessel to challenge the skill of any sailor who takes it on. Built by Beneteau and designed by VPLP, this boat is engineered for speed rather than comfort. At around 35 feet long, the Figaro 3 is built to go fast and handle the rough conditions of off-shore racing.

One of the standout features of the Figaro 3, Ben explains, is the sea-shaped foils. These foils help stabilize the boat and improve its performance. The foils can be moved forward and backward depending on the sailing conditions, giving the boat better control. They can also be retracted, but only when docking the boat, which makes the process much easier and more efficient. Unlike traditional boats that rely on water ballast for balance, the Figaro 3 uses its foils for stability. This system is almost like having five sailors on the rail, helping Ben steer more effectively while racing solo.

When the boat is sailing over 12 knots downwind, the foils help lift the bow, making the boat faster and more responsive. Ben notes, that this design truly transforms how the boat handles, especially in challenging conditions.

Unique Features of the Figaro 3:

The Figaro 3 is packed with practical features that make racing more efficient. One of the key features, according to Ben, is the cam cleats on the mast for the Jib and Kite. These cleats allow sailors to hoist sails directly from the mast. Once the sails are up, Ben can return to the cockpit to close the clutches and tidy up the halyards, saving time and making the process more streamlined.

What’s in the locker on a Figaro 3?

The Figaro 3 carries 7 sails in total:

Mainsail

Jib (reefable from J2 to J4) *as per the new class rule for 2025.

Code Zero

Storm Jib (rarely used)

Big and Small Gennaker

A sealed spare Gennaker (which can only be used in emergencies, and if used, a penalty is applied)

These sails are essential for racing, providing the flexibility to handle a wide range of conditions, from light winds to heavy weather.

No Comfort, Just Speed – And Expect to Get Wet!

While the Figaro 3 is a Beneteau, it’s important to note that this boat was not made for comfort— it’s made for speed. Racing on the Figaro 3 means getting wet. And Ben Beasley makes it clear — getting really wet. The ocean constantly sprays over the boat, and he and his fellow sailors have even resorted to wearing ski goggles to protect their eyes from the saltwater and wind. It’s all part of the thrill of solo offshore racing, but it’s certainly not a leisurely sail. For Ben, it’s all about pushing the limits and making the boat perform at its best, regardless of the conditions.

How to Secure a Figaro 3

for the Season:

Securing a Figaro 3 for the season depends on your budget and availability. Some skippers, like Ben, own their boats, while others rent them. However, it’s been particularly difficult this year due to the growing popularity of the Figaro 3 class in France. The demand for boats is high, making it harder to find a rental that fits a lower budget or only part of the season. Despite these challenges, Ben is working hard to secure a Figaro 3 for the upcoming events.

Thanks so much for following along with Ben’s journey! Your support is what keeps this campaign moving forward, and he is excited to bring you more updates as the season progresses. If you have any questions or want to stay more connected, feel free to reach out anytime. Keep up to date with Ben’s preparation for Europe by giving him a cheeky “like” on the his social media channels. See the links at the bottom on this e-newsletter.

Onwards and upwards!

Getting value for money on vessel cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your vessel, there are several things to consider to ensure you achieve good results, avoid constant maintenance costs, and pass regional hull inspections Regular cleaning and anti-fouling your vessel will save you money over time and give you peace of mind when travelling around New Zealand

1. Choose a cleaning method that aligns with your vessel’s maintenance schedule Depending on the product used, you should be applying new anti-foul every two years. Using a good quality product can be the difference between having to re-apply anti-foul earlier than expected, or constant cleaning, which leads to extra maintenance costs Regular haul out and water-blasting, is recommended to keep your hull clear of fouling for longer before the next application of anti-foul product

2. Decide whether to do it yourself, or hire a professional service. If you opt for a professional haul out and clean, ensure you can visually inspect the vessel after the job has been completed. If the vessel has not been properly cleaned, fouling can quickly rebuild in areas such as under the keel, around rudders and bow thrusters, and areas where the straps of the travel lift have held the vessel When it comes to professional anti-fouling applications, do some research on local companies and read reviews to find one that offers a good quality anti-foul and a track record of satisfied customers. Again, you will want to check the vessel before it is returned back to the water to ensure the job has been completed to your expectations. Be sure to assess the high-risk areas have been covered . Over time, a good anti-fouling application and regular cleaning can lessen your vessel’s maintenance and running costs. Less fouling means greater fuel efficiency.

3 Know the rules

Inadequate cleaning can lead to the rapid return of marine pests and may restrict the vessel’s ability to travel to certain regions around New Zealand.

When entering the Marlborough, Nelson, or Tasman regions, fouling on your vessel's hull and niche areas must not exceed ‘light fouling’ or Level 2 on the Level of Fouling scale, for example, small patches or isolated barnacles (1 - 5% coverage), unless:

You're entering for a haul-out, which must happen within 24 hours.

There's an emergency affecting the safety of the craft or people on board.

There's a declared state of emergency

To ensure these requirements are met, regular cleaning and antifouling at least every two years is recommended Failure to comply can result in the vessel being refused entry or asked to be hauled out and cleaned at the nearest haul-out facility This will come at a cost to the vessel owner, and may delay travel plans.

Marinas and ports can also impose specific requirements on visiting vessels and may refuse service if these requirements are not met. Many marinas follow the 6 or 1 rule. This means that boats must have been antifouled within 6 months of entering the marina or lifted and hauled out within 1 month It is recommended that you check with individual marinas before you plan to visit

Regular marina surveillance programmes may also flag your vessel as being non-compliant. If the vessel does not meet the requirements, or is harbouring marine pests such as Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii), you may be ordered to haul out and clean.

BLAKE Expedition set to depart for fourth voyage to New Zealand’s

In a venture to understand global climate dynamics, the 2025 BLAKE Expedition is set to depart on a research mission to the Auckland and Campbell islands.

Departing March 1st aboard HMNZS Canterbury, this two-week voyage will bring together a 23-strong crew including scientists, students, and teachers in a trip to what is regarded as one of Earth’s most pristine natural laboratories. The sub-Antarctic islands house some of the most unique wildlife globally, with many of the birds, invertebrates, and plants found nowhere else in the world

This trip will be the programme’s ninth voyage and the fourth to the Sub-Antarctic, in partnership with the Royal New Zealand Navy, and will see field work carried out across four projects which hope to develop an understanding of climate change and biodiversity in the Southern Ocean region.

The expedition features a new project lead by Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (SAEF) and Monash University, and will focus on springtails – minuscule, wingless land-dwelling invertebrates found throughout the sub-Antarctic islands.

This research will provide the first comprehensive update to springtail biodiversity data since the 1960s, as well as any recently introduced species Using modern genetic techniques, researchers will explore the evolutionary relationships between these island populations and their Southern Hemisphere relatives

The team will also conduct rock sampling for Chlorine-36 surface exposure dating, led by Professor Gary Wilson from the University of Waikato. The analysis will aim to reveal crucial data about historical glacier movements and climate patterns in the sub-Antarctic region.

“Understanding how climate change will impact various parts of the Earth requires us to refine global climate models and one of the more sensitive areas to climate change is the subantarctic – understanding how and when ice retreated from this part

The expedition will also advance two critical ongoing research streams; peat coring investigations led by GNS Scientist and Climate Researcher Greer Gilmer, which will investigate historical climate changes using preserved organic matter, and intertidal kelp surveys directed by the University of Otago’s Phoebe Chapman, monitoring marine ecosystem health in response to warming seas.

This mission continues the legacy of Sir Peter Blake, whose pioneering expeditions to Antarctica, Tierra Del Fuego, and the Amazon inspired global environmental awareness

BLAKE Head of Programmes Alice Ward-Allen will lead the 2025 Expedition, and says the trip provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for teachers and students.

“During the voyage they’ll encounter wildlife most people will never see in their lifetime They’ll work alongside scientists from GNS, University of Waikato, University of Otago and SAEF/Monash University, while gaining hands-on experience in scientific research and developing valuable leadership skills,” she says.

She emphasizes the importance of continuing Sir Peter Blakes legacy which is at the core of all BLAKE’s programmes, to experience the environment through adventure and participation.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our rangatahi There is always a sense of adventure and excitement in the air as these expeditions take place, as we know firsthand how lifechanging the experience will be for many, ” she continues. Since its establishment in 2012, BLAKE Expeditions has carried forward this vision through voyages to New Zealand’s most remote territories: Rangitāhua Kermadec Islands, Maungahuka Auckland Islands, Motu Ihupuku Campbell Island, and Te Rua-o-te-moko Fiordland.

The timing of this expedition is crucial, as the Southern Ocean emerges as a critical factor in global climate regulation This vast marine ecosystem serves as Earth’s primary heat and carbon exchange system between atmosphere and ocean, making the research findings vital for understanding and addressing climate change impacts.

Marina Community Rallies for Annual Clean Up Australia Day Event

Coral Sea Marina hosted its annual Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday, 2nd March 2025, in partnership with Tangaroa Blue Foundation An incredible turnout of 61 volunteers from the local community dedicating their morning to collecting litter from local beaches, parks, pathways, and beyond. The collective effort resulted in the removal of an impressive 250.5kg of waste from the Whitsundays environment

Litter collected was meticulously sorted and recorded in the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database, ensuring valuable data records which contribute to long-term source reduction programs as well as assisting to identify solutions for the reduction of marine debris

The Australian Marine Debris Initiative app, managed by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, plays a crucial role in tracking and identifying sources of pollution throughout Australia, which in turn informs future prevention strategies

“Another great turn out for our Clean Up Australia Day event again this year’’ explains Joscelyn O’Keefe, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Coral Sea Marina.

“Clean Up Australia Day is not just about removing litter it’s about fostering awareness and inspiring action to protect our beautiful marine environment for future generations.”

As Australia’s first Sustainable Tourism Certified marina, Coral Sea Marina is committed to environmental best practice and has implemented a range of initiatives and partnerships with conservation organizations to promote environmental stewardship.

For those looking to make a difference in their daily lives, simple actions such as reducing single-use plastics, participating in community clean-up events, and correctly disposing of waste can have a significant impact Individuals can also support sustainability by choosing eco-friendly products, educating themselves on local conservation efforts, and encouraging businesses they use to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Events like this highlight the power of collective action in safeguarding Australia’s marine ecosystems,” explains Ms O’Keefe, “On behalf of the marina team I would like to extend our gratitude to all those who attended and to the community for their continued support of this important initiative”

Ms O’Keefe concludes, “Every day should be Clean Up Australia Day – it doesn’t just need to be on 2 March!”

UPDATED CRUISING GUIDE FOR QUEENSLAND

Greg Luck has been a frequent contributor to the Down Under Rally Magazine He has released a new third edition of Cruising the Queensland Coast, his guide for yachts cruising from the Gold Coast to Lizard Island.

While cruising in 2023, Greg was struck by the number of cruisers who had adopted Starlink. The cheapest way to use it is on the Roam plan, designed to work over land. At sea, the very expensive Maritime plan must be used. Starlink “land” includes many islands and some reefs using a hexagonal tiling system. It can be hit and miss as to whether an anchorage or mooring is on “land” or sea for Starlink. New in the 3rd edition, each anchorage and mooring includes a Starlink icon to indicate land or sea.

Along with a print edition, the book comes as an eBook for tablets. However, the big players support a limited number of countries, and usually not the overseas territories of those countries such as Noumea or Tahiti. This has been a problem for some cruisers. The 3rd edition adds Rakuten Kobo, which supports 244 countries and overseas territories with excellent coverage for the Pacific.

The third edition is fully updated with:

•many new public moorings for the Townsville, Discovery and Cassowary coasts and the Whitsundays

•new anchorages, taking the total to 503 anchorages and moorings

•new public pontoons

•updates to the K’Gari Coast for the new Great Sandy Marine Park management plan

•Starlink land versus ocean status for each anchorage, mooring and marina along with the Telstra mobile reception

•digital TV reception strength for each anchorage

•latest marina changes including comprehensive information on super yacht berths and resultant marina berth layout changes

•S63 official Hydrographic chart references for each coast and how to use Australian

Hydrographic charts on apps and chart plotters along with other navigation data sources

•expanded coverage of the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay

•recalculated wave roses for recent Waverider buoy placements such as the Wide Bay Bar

•higher-resolution aerial images and photos in the print version

•numerous other changes and updates

Down Under Rally and Island Cruising members get a 10% discount on the print book and a 20% discount on the Google Play Books eBook. Contact Greg at book@curlewescape.com.au with your member number to get a discount.

HYDROVANE IS BOTH:

A Self Steering Windvane System:

A completely independent mechanical system (ie. non-electrical) that steers the boat on a wind-based course. Easiest to operate, with no lines in the cockpit, and excellent on all points of sail and in all conditions.

It is an Auxiliary Rudder type of windvane system – the Vane drives its own Rudder via a sophisticated Drive Unit linkage.

An Emergency Rudder/ Steering System

Inherently a second Rudder and Steering System for your boat.

It is the strongest Emergency Rudder and Steering System available today. Always in place, nothing to set-up – takes the fear out of losing your rudder or breaking your vessel’s steering mid passage or close to shore.

We are very proud to be a part of the South Pacific Sailing Network - a group of like minded businesses and countries around the South Pacific who are all committed to promoting sustainable yachting tourism and advocating on behalf of cruisers exploring the South Pacific.

Our Pacific rally is the pathway that connects the islands and sailors together

Read more about the aims of the SPSN here.

Dear Captain Jack,

BOATING BOATING ETIQUETTE! ETIQUETTE!

Got a question? Ask a Pirate...

I am having a few problems up in the Pacific, my boat has been searched, I stopped at one of the Islands in Fiji before I cleared Customs, I didn’t fill out the right paperwork, and I’ve upset the locals as I don’t know what Sevusevu means, and I got told off by the police in Tonga for not obeying the local protocols on Sunday I am experienced and independent cruiser though, and I know what I am doing, - I don’t need to join a rally.... so I thought I’d just contact Viki at Island Cruising and get her to sort it for me. What do you think?

Thanks Mr Hook

Ahoy there Mr Hook,

The team at Island Cruising love to help people, but if you want some assistance & advice, you really should be joining the rally! Don’t be a bludger Mr Hook... and definitely don’t disrespect local laws & cultural protocols We need to all do our best to protect the reputation of cruisers in the SW Pacific

Even independent, experienced cruisers can get lots of information out of the rally inclusions and you’ll save a HUGE amount of time and effort on all the research you’ve clearly not been doing for yourself If Viki doesn’t know the answer, she will go out of her way to find out There is no set agenda or itinerary you need to follow, you can still cruise at your own pace and just tap in to the numerous resources and great discounts from all the rally partners along the way.

Island Cruising has also been doing lots of work behind the scenes, advocating on behalf of all cruisers with the local authorities to ensure that everyone in the Pacific has a better understanding of some of the challenges out there, so it can be super handy to have them on side if you have any issues.

The aim of the rally is to give you all the information you need so that you won’t get yourself into trouble in the first place, you’ll learn about all the tricky bits, cultural protocols and the latest important news as it comes to hand for cruisers, and if rally participants have any issues along the way, the Island Cruising team are always on hand to help out Otherwise - Mr Hook - you really are on your own! Good luck with that...

Happy sailing

YoursCaptJack

East of the Lizard

The Sundeer & Deerfoot designed boats from Steve Dashew are regarded as the best short handed cruising boats in the world, bar none. With a solidly built GRP / Kevlar hull, easily managed sail plan, shallow draft and moveable water ballast they make 200+ mile days easy for a crew of 2 or more in comfort and safety. It is very rare for one of these boats to come on the market.

Hylas 46

AMARI is a stunning Hylas 46, masterfully designed by German Frers for blue-water cruising. Fully equipped for safety and comfort, this yacht is built to cross oceans with ease. Having been meticulously maintained and outfitted for long-distance passage-making, AMARI has already completed over 20,000 offshore miles with her current owners.

Visually, AMARI is striking. Her dark blue hull and teak accents create an elegant profile at sea. Below deck, the beautifully appointed teak interior features a high-gloss finish that exudes timeless sophistication The yacht offers two staterooms with ensuite heads: an aft cabin with a centerline queen-sized berth and a forward cabin with a pullman-style berth, both accommodating two guests each The salon provides additional sleeping space with a pull-out settee The galley is exceptionally well-equipped, capable of handling gourmet cooking with ease.

I have been based in New Zealand for the past 5 years after cruising on and off for 8 years, having sailed the East Coast of Africa, the West and East Coasts of Australia as well as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. My wife and I live on our boat and are still fully involved in the cruising lifestyle. I am a Licensed Immigration Adviser for New Zealand and, as a yachtie, have a particular interest in helping yachties with their immigration issues. Island Cruising NZ Members get a 30% discount
