I hope you have all had some fun adventures on the water over summer. The weather conditions have been a little challenging at times, with gale force winds in Northland NZ, big thunder storms in Sydney and breezy conditions further south made for many holidays turning out a bit more of an adventure than we’d have liked!
The South Island Rally participants are having a fabulous time, all scattered all around the whole Island and we also have one of our Australian boats on the way across the Tasman as we speak to join them.
You can check out some of their stunning photographs of their adventures later on in the Cruise News this month.
It was awesome to go along to SailGP earlier in January This time as a spectator instead of the organiser like previous years I was invited along to help train some of their course marshals the week prior which was lots of fun. Their next race is in Sydney next weekend and is well worth a look if you are in the area!
Another fun event coming up this month is the Australian Wooden Boat Festival and I know there are quite a few of our members sailing to Tasmania as we speak to attend.
For the Pacific Rally participants, we are about to kick off our pre-departure webinar sessions. We’ve got all kinds of topics
coming up to help with their preparationseverything to itinerary planning in Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu & New Caledonia, navigating using OpenCPN, documentation & formalities, weather, passage planning, safety, comms at sea and more! There is still time to join us here and take part in all the fun!
Our rally packs are coming together too and include a detailed 200 page Pacific Rally guide book, a chart, and lots of other goodies from our rally partners to ensure that they have a safe and fun time in the Pacific this season
We also welcome a number of new marine business partners to our cruising community this month! d’Albora Marinas, Dockland 5, Maintenance ROS, Caniwi Rigging, Voyage Vet, Ocean Sailing Expeditions, Project X, Deck Hardware, The Whangārei Marine Group and the Viking Explorers Rally - and a few more awesome ones in the pipeline! Thanks for joining us! We look forward to connecting and sharing more about all your fabulous marine products and services with our members.
This month I was also very humbled to have the Pacific Rally voted best Yacht Rally in the Pacific for the second year in a row by Lux Life Magazine. We also featured in Practical Sailor Magazine too - you can read the lovely article by Kathy Catton here.
I hope you enjoy the Cruise News magazine this month, if you’d like more cruising content in your inbox, please join us! For just NZD$129 00 per annum You get access to all our member content and cruising resources on our website, weekly email updates, inside tips on what is going on in the cruising community in the SW Pacific, access to some fantastic deals from our awesome and generous marine business partners, and connection with the other Island Cruising members.
We also have a fantastic CrewSeeker service, if you are looking for keen crew or are keen to get some offshore experience, this is a great way of making contact and sharing some fabulous sailing adventures this season.
Many thanks

EIGHT BELLS
Mark Gibbs from Waikawa New Zealand sadly passed away last week after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 67.
Mark was a great supporter & member of Island Cruising and spent many years as a Cat 1 Safety Inspector, helping fellow cruisers prepare their yachts to head offshore
Mark completed countless boat deliveries, sailed tens of thousands of ocean miles, and cruised his own yacht, Excel, through the Pacific and racing around New Zealand.
He was also very involved with the Waikawa Boating Club and the local Marlborough sailing community.
Mark was a larger than life character and someone I feel honoured to have known personally. He will be sorely missed by me and everyone else who had the pleasure of meeting him.
Geoff Taylor from the Copra Shed Marina in Savusavu Fiji passed away last week
Many of you would have met Geoff on your voyages through Savusavu and he always made me and the Pacific Rally participants visiting the area feel very welcome You’d often find him propping up the bar at the Copra Shed or up at the Planters Club.
Geoff lived in Fiji for over 50 years was a co-founder of the Copra Shed marina, set up the Savusavu Yacht Club teaching children to sail, and internationally regarded exploration geologist majoring in marine and economic geology.
He was also the Ocean Cruising Club Port Officer for Savusavu
Geoff also wrote a book about his adventures called Not My Fault - Memoirs of a Field Geologist in Fiji and is well worth a read
We send our sincere condolences to the Copra Shed team and to Geoff’s friends & family at this sad time

Controlled Area Notice in place at Waiheke Island
New biosecurity controls are in place over an area of Waiheke Island waters to prevent the spread of the invasive seaweed exotic caulerpa The controlled area notice (CAN) comes into force at midnight 16 December 24 and sets legal requirements for some fishing and boating activities in an area around Thompson’s Point and across Onetangi Bay This is the area of Waiheke Island where exotic caulerpa has been found
Within this zone people will still be able to anchor but must follow equipment cleaning directions before they leave the controlled area
The law requires boaties to check their anchor, anchor chain and any equipment used in the water for attached seaweed or plant material. This includes, for example, diving and fishing gear, wetsuits and fins.
Any seaweed found must be removed, bagged or securely contained, and taken ashore for disposal in a rubbish bin. If secure containment isn’t possible, it can be put back into the waters it came from. The important thing is that it is not taken to other waters outside the controlled area. The equipment should be washed down with fresh or seawater and, where possible, left to dry before being used in another area.
Launching vessels, including amphibious Sealegs-type craft is permitted, as is motoring or sailing through the waters of the controlled area.
The controls at Waiheke are not as restrictive as those for the Aotea and Te Rāwhiti CAN zones because the caulerpa is less dense at Waiheke
Out Chasing Stars
By David Alton
Sometimes the best adventures start with the hardest moments. When Amy's dad passed away suddenly at 50 from cancer, we had the classic “life has no guarantees” realization. If the opportunity comes up to chase your dream, you need to grab it with both hands. After a few years of chartering in the Caribbean and sailing our 30’ (9.14m) catamaran around our hometown of Houston, Texas, the chance arose for Amy to sell her business. It was a fairly simple decision to throw off the dock lines and go sailing around the world.
Enter Starry Horizons, our Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran that would become our home for the next 10 years. In 2014, she was launched in La Rochelle, France and we started a blog and YouTube channel called Out Chasing Stars. It’s hard to imagine now, but in those days sailing YouTube channels were pretty rare. We were inspired to start ours, partly to document our journey to look back on in years to come and partly to prove to our worried families that we weren't completely in over our heads.
I still remember the shocking moment when we realized that more people than just our parents were interested in what we were doing! The blog and videos grew into something much more than we ever dreamed. Both Amy and I feel an immense amount of pride when people share that we inspired their own cruising adventures or something we filmed helped them solve a problem on their boat.
One of our most impactful contributions was our series on OpenCPN. Many cruisers were struggling to understand this powerful tool, so we created detailed tutorials breaking down everything from basic chart plotting to advanced route planning. The series perfectly captured what we were trying to do with Out Chasing Stars - taking complex, technical information and making it accessible to fellow sailors.
From the beginning, we wanted to try and share the realities of boat life. When our noncruising friends pictured what we were doing, the images were mostly of crystal clear waters, tropical sunsets and drinks on the beach. And yes, there were magical moments that fit those descriptions. But as boaters know, those magical moments are mixed in among the challenging ones.
One day you’re watching the sunset in that pristine anchorage, thinking life couldn’t get better. The next, you’re hanging upside down in the engine room, covered in oil, wondering why on earth you thought this life was a good idea.
Our Pacific Ocean crossing is a perfect example of how the cruising life contains the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Getting through the doldrums, only to be rewarded with storms was tough. Having to go to the top of the mast to fix a fraying main halyard left me battered and bruised. Things broke (because boats…) but seeing the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia appear on the horizon made every challenging moment worth it.
Sometimes it felt like every day was a learning opportunity. And those opportunities started early. The learning curve when moving aboard was steep. We had a solid boating background and we both have our 100 ton US Coast Guard captain’s licenses. But still, there were new systems to understand, new equipment to maintain, and what felt like endless manuals to read through. Every manufacturer had different schedules, different requirements, and different ways of documenting everything. It felt like drinking from the proverbial fire hose.
Even before we moved aboard, I already knew how critical preventative maintenance would be to the success of our cruising adventures. From those first moments in La Rochelle, a lot of time was dedicated to figuring out what maintenance would be needed, when I’d need to do it and tracking everything. I started with paper logs to track maintenance before graduating to spreadsheets, but neither solution was ideal. The paper logs weren't so great at reminding me when tasks were due, and a spreadsheet to manage all the different systems plus inventory quickly became unwieldy. Not to mention there wasn't a great way to provide easy access to all the additional pictures, troubleshooting videos and documentation that I’d accumulated over the years.
I looked for digital solutions, but everything available seemed to be either designed and priced for super yachts with full-time crew or was just basic software repackaged for use on boats. Neither option addressed the unique challenges that come with managing a cruising boat's maintenance needs.
During our years of sailing we met countless cruisers who had amazing boats but struggled with the complexities of maintaining them. Some had paper manuals scattered across various lockers, others had elaborate spreadsheet systems, but almost everyone wished for a better solution. I had many conversations with owners who were struggling with a repair, only to discover they hadn't known that particular piece of equipment needed regular maintenance.
Finally, I came to the realization that if I wanted something better, I’d need to build it.
In March of 2020 we sailed into Antigua, crossed our wake to complete our circumnavigation and became the first YouTube channel to fully document a circumnavigation. Then of course, we promptly entered a several month COVID lockdown.
The perfect opportunity had finally come and Maintenance Right on Schedule was born. Starting a software company while living aboard wasn't exactly straightforward. Life on a boat is already pretty consuming between maintenance, sailing, and actually enjoying the amazing places you visit. Finding time to develop MaintenanceROS meant carefully balancing work with the lifestyle that inspired it. But the stubborn persistence I'd developed troubleshooting boat problems came in handy! The cruising community is incredibly helpful - we'd often share maintenance tips, spare parts, and creative solutions with other boaters. That spirit of community support heavily influenced how we approached developing MaintenanceROS. It wasn't just about creating better maintenance tracking; it was about addressing real challenges we'd faced during our decade of cruising.
We wanted to simplify gathering all the manufacturer maintenance schedules and documentation so we built a custom database with thousands of marine equipment. I’d lost track of the number of times I bought a spare part, only to discover another one hidden away in a different locker so we built a fully integrated inventory management system. The checklists we used on Starry Horizons for passage preparation and new port arrivals got incorporated into our checklist library. And on and on.
Before cruising, I was on the typical corporate career path. But living on a boat and seeing the world has a way of shifting your perspectives. MaintenanceROS has been a perfect way to work within the cruising community I've grown to love, hopefully making boat ownership a bit easier for others along
Having been on both sides of boat ownership now - from complete newcomer to experienced cruiserI understand how overwhelming maintaining a boat can be. Whether you're just starting your journey or have been at it for years, there's always room to make maintenance tracking a bit easier. That's what we aim for with MaintenanceROS. It's the tool I wish I'd had when we started our adventure, but still greatly simplified life aboard once I was finally able to ditch my spreadsheets for good.
Eventually, the time came last year for Amy and me to move off Starry Horizons in search of new adventures. I often talk about how our sailing plans were written in the sand at low tide. It’s good to have a plan, but sailing and the boating life require lots of flexibility.
Our journey from corporate life to circumnavigation to software development certainly wasn't planned, but it led us exactly where we needed to be. Those ten years aboard Starry Horizons gave us incredible experiences, lifelong friends, and ultimately, the inspiration for something that could help make boating better for others.

The Viking Explorers Rally 2025, on their way across the Atlantic
The eighth edition of the Viking Explorers Rally departed as scheduled, on January 6th from Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, towards the stunning shores of Grenada, the Spice Island of the Caribbean. Together, they will sail approximately 2,700 nautical miles across the Atlantic, with Port Louis Marina in Grenada as their final destination.
With an intermediate stop planned at Marina Mindelo in Cape Verde, the fleet set sail in very light wind conditions and would then experience some stronger north easterly winds on their way to Mindelo for the remaining days; a total of approximately 850-miles until the Island of Sao Vicente.
The fleet consists of 22 boats, 9 catamarans and 13 monohulls. The boats range in size from 12m to 20m. (40ft to 66ft). There are 86 sailors in total, including 2 children aged 5 and 7, as well as 1 cat and 4 dogs representing a total of 21 countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Australia, Sweden, Norway, the UK, Slovakia, France, the USA, Canada, the Philippines, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Denmark, Spain, and Lithuania.
In the weeks leading up to departure, participants engaged in seminars, webinars, guided tours, sundowners, dinners, and final preparations. On January 4th, the Skippers Briefing gathered all captains and first mates to discuss the route, weather updates, and marina approach procedures. After deliberation, the fleet unanimously decided to depart on January 6th, between 09:00 and 12:00 UTC, as scheduled.
Ahead of departure, the rally team then coordinated the testing of satellite communication systems and tracking to ensure all vessels could stay in contact with each other and the Onshore Tracking team. That evening, the crews enjoyed the Captains’ Dinner, sponsored this year by Seven Star Yacht Transport. The route between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde will take most of participants between 5-7 days.
The Viking Explorers Rally has established itself as a compelling alternative for Atlantic crossings. Unlike competitive races, this 2,700-nautical-mile adventure emphasizes camaraderie, safety, and enjoyment. Since its inaugural event in 2018, the rally has grown in popularity, attracting sailors from around the world. With a maximum of 25 boats allowed each year, the Viking Explorers Rally offers an exclusive experience, focusing on exceptional customer service and fostering strong connections among participants. The rally continues to stand out as a distinctive and memorable way to sail across the Atlantic.

Hutchwilco launches voluntary recall of Inflatable Lifejacket model
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and New Zealand leading lifejacket manufacturer Hutchwilco are proactively recalling a specific model of their popular Inflatable Lifejacket.
Customers with manual 170N lifejackets manufactured from June 2021 to May 2022 are potentially affected. The recall comes following an advisory from their American supplier, Halkey Roberts, of a potential failure during testing of the green/red indicator
This is reported as an occasional issue only affecting some units. Whilst the firing pin mechanism still functions, the indicator may show that the lifejacket is ready for use when in fact it isn’t due to, for example, the cylinder not being screwed in properly or the cylinder being damaged. The lifejacket may not inflate if this happens.
“Ensuring our customers have the right quality equipment to keep them safe while out enjoying the water is always our top priority That’s why it’s important for us to take these voluntary steps to get our customers sorted and back on the water quickly,” says Tim Ritchie, General Manager
Recalled inflators can be found on your Hutchwilco 170N manual lifejacket that’s fitted with a V96000 Halkey Roberts mechanism with a manufacture date of June 2021 through to May 2022 (this will be laser printed on the mechanism in the format MM/DD/YY).
“We’re asking boaties to help us maintain our top-quality standards and take the time to check the mechanism in their 170N Inflatable Lifejacket. If your mechanism is a Halkey Roberts v96000 please head to www.hutchwilco.co.nz/recall and follow our three simple steps to get your faulty lifejacket back to us at our cost. Our team are standing by to remedy the situation by either replacing the mechanism in affected lifejackets or coordinating a refund from the mechanism’s manufacturer, Halkey Roberts. Either way we want to get customers sorted quickly so they can continue to make the best of summer, ” says Mr Ritchie.
The large majority of Hutchwilco’s popular inflatable lifejackets are manufactured with an alternative branded mechanism and aren’t affected. Boaties can continue to have nothing but trust in New Zealand’s leading lifejacket and safety equipment provider. These are voluntary steps that are being taken to ensure customers aren’t impacted by an issue that’s outside of Hutchwilco’s control.

New Zealand’s festival on the water is back in 2025
Dates have been released for the Auckland Boat Show in 2025. Bringing a festival on the water to the heart of central Auckland, it will showcase all things boating from 6-9 March.
The Auckland Boat Show, scheduled to run as part of Moana Auckland, New Zealand’s Ocean Festival, is timed to allow boating enthusiasts to enjoy a feast of March marine activities
Making the most of an Auckland summer on the water, the show gathers together 2025’s latest releases from boatbuilders and brokers across New Zealand and the world It’s a show which has become known throughout the region for the spectacular sight of the central city filling with hundreds of boats
The Auckland Boat Show is one of the key events of Moana Auckland and runs after the NZ Millennium Cup superyacht regatta in February to give visitors plenty to enjoy on the water.
A large marina display will spread through Jellicoe Harbour, filling the space outside the former America’s Cup bases with newly-released yachts, motoryachts, multihulls, superyachts, amphibious vessels and trailer boats. On-land exhibits will complement the on-water component of the show, taking up a Viaduct Events Centre spot in central Auckland’s buzzing Wynyard Quarter.
“There’s nothing like an Auckland summer on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook.
“Which is why we stage the show in early March. It’s such a pleasure to showcase New Zealand’s marine industry where it’s at its best; on the water, enjoying the sun and lifestyle that boating brings ”
Uniquely in this part of the world, sea trials are a crucial component of the event With the Waitematā Harbour as the show’s neighbour, manufacturers and brokers are able to demonstrate vessels in their element to buyers, allowing them to bring performance, sea-kindliness and handling to the forefront
For 24 years the Auckland Boat Show has also provided an important stage for regional and international parts and services providers. With a large on-land component of the show, the event has become a launching point each year for annual releases of innovative products and new developments.

Get Ready — A planetary alignment is happening. Here's how to watch:
The much-anticipated planet alignment of 2025 has started To catch this celestial alignment, look toward the southwestern horizon as twilight gives way to darkness.
Venus and Saturn will dazzle together, with Venus shining as the brighter beacon. Above them, Jupiter, recently past its opposition, radiates as the second brightest point of light after Venus, offering an excellent opportunity for naked-eye observation
Mars, with its signature red glow, is unmissable near the eastern horizon. This January is a prime time for viewing the Red Planet, as it grows brighter ahead of its closest approach to Earth in over two years. That peaked on January 15, when it reached opposition. However, the views will be spectacular for a few more weeks.
For those with a telescope or binoculars, Uranus can be spotted near Jupiter, while Neptune sits close to Venus and Saturn, completing this celestial spectacle

Taking Your Pets Cruising
By Adam Newman
Hi, I’m Adam, a veterinarian and a travel addict. Luck, passion, and itchy soles have meant that I have lived and worked in the UK, New Zealand (twice), Singapore, and Australia, and have been fortunate enough to travel widely elsewhere too
From drafting pet passports and performing export checks in the UK, to dealing with quarantined imported cats in Singapore, and at various points moving my own animals internationally and spending prolonged periods travelling off-grid with them, I am well aware of how complex and stressful these processes have the potential to be!
Ocean cruising is a fantastic adventure, and one that you might want to share with your fluffy or feathered companions. Many dogs and cats (and other species) can adapt well to living on a boat, and if done correctly it can be a hugely rewarding experience for all involved, but it pays to paws for thought before packing up your pets for a passage.
Adjustment
Our pets are often creatures of habit If Doughnut the cat has spent the last 9 years getting up, stretching luxuriously, eating her biscuits, watching the birds out of the window, having a few naps around the house, then going back to bed for a proper sleep, she might be a bit miffed about finding herself bouncing around in a v-berth while beating to weather
Similar confusion and distress might afflict Gerald the goldendoodle if he has spent half a decade dutifully following his toilet training, then suddenly finds himself stuck on a fiberglass and teak island in the middle of the South Pacific without a single blade of the green stuff to aim his bottom at
Change can be stressful. Training should be gradual and regular, adjustment may take time, and some pets may never be happy at sea regardless of how much exposure they get
Book a consultation to discuss; Training approaches
Useful equipment
Sea sickness management
Medications and supplements
Safety
A crew member going overboard is a nightmare scenario, and it would be heartbreaking to lose a pet this way.
Ensuring pets are appropriately and safely contained while underway, with controlled and monitored visits to deck is the best way to avoid an inadvertent Meow-Overboard situation.
I am still working on training my dog Amos not to jump or fall off of any watercraft he is on, so appropriate safety protocols remain key for keeping him alive. Some pets are brighter than others.
As part of my consultation service we can go through your particular pet, plan, and set-up and discuss a risk management plan including;
Appropriate lifeline netting
Harness/life jacket use
Assessment of risk mitigation above and below deck
Implementing technological solutions
Health And Disease
There are a few aspects of health and disease that we need to consider when travelling overseas with our pets;
1. Disease prevention
2 Treatment of illness or accidents
3 Biosecurity adherence
All three of these ought to be prepared for in advance.
Prevention
Prevention is a case of knowing what precautions to take, which will vary depending on the pet’s species and your itinerary.
Different diseases are present in different parts of the world, and some of the potential infections your pet could encounter could be deadly, have lifelong effects, or stop them from being able to return home with you. Each pet’s plan should be specific to their intended route.
Preventative health strategies include;
Vaccinations (possibly different to your pets routine vaccinations at home)
Preventative medications
Avoidance strategies, including knowledge of risky areas and use of pet-safe bug repellents
Just following the medical entry requirements for various countries is not foolproof - these are typically prioritised to protect human health and agriculture from diseases carried by foreign animals entering their country. The nasty diseases your pet might encounter once cleared into the country are not a priority for biosecurity legislators Get in touch and I can develop your diseaseprevention plan in advance, based on your pet’s medical and travel history and your planned itinerary Pre-departure vaccinations with your ‘home’ vet can be arranged, and I can work with them to find the best options for prescription parasite prevention for your journey.
Illness or accidents can be more problematic when you can’t just pop down the road to the vet clinic.
A well-prepared crew will include people with first aid training, and a well-equipped cruising boat will contain a comprehensive medical kit. These can be very useful for dealing with many pet health concerns while afloat, but pet owners must be careful not to make things worse. Different species vary in how they react to human medications, and several over the counter meds can be deadly to our pets.
A pet first-aid kit should be in the locker next to your own
I can supply;
Comprehensive pet first aid kits
Supplementary kits to add in the pet-specific tools, consumables, and nonprescription medications to your existing off-shore kit
A custom-tailored list of recommended prescription medications (including pain relief, antibiotics, motion-sickness medications and more) that you can request your regular vet prescribe to you prior to an extended journey away from veterinary help
Instructions specific to your pet on how and when to use these.
With the advent of reliable and affordable satellite communication, real-time remote medical consultation is more viable than ever
If you find yourself needing veterinary advice while on a passage or in a location without a local veterinarian, line up a remote consultation with me via video or phone call. These consultations are most useful when I already know about your pet and their medical and travel history, so reach out to me before you depart on your travels.
Biosecurity adherence can be a real maze
Every country has their own stipulations on what they will or won’t allow through their borders. They can also vary in how they assess the health and disease status of other countries - one nation might view your pet’s travel history quite differently to how their neighbour did
The presence of an animal aboard your vessel may dictate which order you are best off visiting different countries in, and what your ports of entry will be. In-depth research of requirements and restrictions is necessary to avoid falling foul of the rules, sometimes with severe penalties including fines, criminal convictions, denial of entry, or seizure and euthanasia of the pet
If sailing a round-trip (for example, on the excellent Island Cruising and Down Under rallies!) you also have to consider the requirements to get your pet back into your country of origin.
NZ and Australia are two of the trickiest countries to get animals into, and while animals born there might have an easier time than those from further afield, advanced preparation is required to make sure the process goes smoothly. Infection with the potentially deadly blood parasite Babesia, the sexually transmitted infection Brucella (stop sniggering at the back), or the horror movie-esque Heartworm while in the tropics may mean that not only do you have an ill pet, but you are unable to bring them home with you. The risk of contracting these potentially deadly and border-blocking infections (and others!) can be easily mitigated with some advanced planning
While taking your pet abroad with you may seem like an intimidating prospect, it is often manageable with appropriate forethought and preparation. Get in touch via my website and we can discuss how best to keep your fuzzy mate safe while you have the adventure of a lifetime together.

UPDATED CRUISING GUIDE FOR QUEENSLAND
Greg Luck has been a frequent contributor to the Down Under Rally Magazine He has released a new third edition of Cruising the Queensland Coast, his guide for yachts cruising from the Gold Coast to Lizard Island.
While cruising in 2023, Greg was struck by the number of cruisers who had adopted Starlink. The cheapest way to use it is on the Roam plan, designed to work over land. At sea, the very expensive Maritime plan must be used. Starlink “land” includes many islands and some reefs using a hexagonal tiling system. It can be hit and miss as to whether an anchorage or mooring is on “land” or sea for Starlink. New in the 3rd edition, each anchorage and mooring includes a Starlink icon to indicate land or sea.
Along with a print edition, the book comes as an eBook for tablets. However, the big players support a limited number of countries, and usually not the overseas territories of those countries such as Noumea or Tahiti. This has been a problem for some cruisers. The 3rd edition adds Rakuten Kobo, which supports 244 countries and overseas territories with excellent coverage for the Pacific.
The third edition is fully updated with:
•many new public moorings for the Townsville, Discovery and Cassowary coasts and the Whitsundays
•new anchorages, taking the total to 503 anchorages and moorings
•new public pontoons
•updates to the K’Gari Coast for the new Great Sandy Marine Park management plan
•Starlink land versus ocean status for each anchorage, mooring and marina along with the Telstra mobile reception
•digital TV reception strength for each anchorage
•latest marina changes including comprehensive information on super yacht berths and resultant marina berth layout changes
•S63 official Hydrographic chart references for each coast and how to use Australian
Hydrographic charts on apps and chart plotters along with other navigation data sources
•expanded coverage of the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay
•recalculated wave roses for recent Waverider buoy placements such as the Wide Bay Bar
•higher-resolution aerial images and photos in the print version
•numerous other changes and updates

Owning a boat is not just about having fun and traveling to the most beautiful destinations in the world. While that is the main reason why people go into the boating life, there is also the same level of responsibility attached to it, as there is enjoyment.
As a boat owner or manager, you have to look after your vessel to ensure that it is in good shape and fully stocked to leave the dock and get you and your group to your next destination safe and sound. As such, you need to plan ahead and create a list of tasks to accomplish.
Use a task management software to help you navigate the maintenance system of a boat
The best boat management tool TheBoatApp, by Marine Data Cloud, is a boat management tool designed with task monitoring in mind What it does is provide you with all your boating life in one place Through the app you can have access to your marine life, fully cataloged and backed up so you never lose track of what is going on with your boat at any time of the day and year This information is accessible on any device, whether you have an active internet connection or not
Most importantly, this is a boat management software that allows you to plan, assign tasks to other members of your team such as skippers, marina personnel, or technicians, and place deadlines so you can be ahead of the game.
The advantages of TheBoatApp
The major advantage of using TheBoatApp is that you can always access information in real-time. So if a task has been completed you can just check on the app if it has been marked as such or if you need to assign someone else to help.
You can also register a task to be done on a certain date and get a notification when it is checked off the list If you are not the most organized person when it comes to remembering to do a task, just add a prealert to get notified ahead of time
Last but not least, share this information with whoever you believe needs to be in the loop and get your boat in good shape before a trip
Check out more features of TheBoatApp online and register for the free version to get a personal look at how the app may help you in task monitoring.
This is the new and most improved way of managing your tasks and helping you enjoy your boat as much as you can.

Banana and Peanut Butter Smoothie: Protein-Packed
Sarah Powell - Small Vegan Kitchen
As sailors, we know that mornings set the tone for the day, especially when the sea is unpredictable.
Whether you're preparing for a calm day of cruising or bracing for challenging conditions, starting with a nutrient-packed smoothie can make all the difference. That’s where this protein-packed Banana and Peanut Butter Smoothie comes in—a creamy, delicious blend that fuels your body and keeps you energized no matter what the ocean throws your way.
This recipe combines some of our favourite galley staples: bananas, peanut butter, chia seeds, dates, and plant milk. Together, these ingredients create a superfood powerhouse that’s quick to make and easy to enjoy, even on a busy morning.
HYDROVANE IS BOTH:
A Self Steering Windvane System:
A completely independent mechanical system (ie. non-electrical) that steers the boat on a wind-based course. Easiest to operate, with no lines in the cockpit, and excellent on all points of sail and in all conditions.
It is an Auxiliary Rudder type of windvane system – the Vane drives its own Rudder via a sophisticated Drive Unit linkage.
An Emergency Rudder/ Steering System
Inherently a second Rudder and Steering System for your boat.
It is the strongest Emergency Rudder and Steering System available today. Always in place, nothing to set-up – takes the fear out of losing your rudder or breaking your vessel’s steering mid passage or close to shore.
We are very proud to be a part of the South Pacific Sailing Network - a group of like minded businesses and countries around the South Pacific who are all committed to promoting sustainable yachting tourism and advocating on behalf of cruisers exploring the South Pacific.
Our Pacific rally is the pathway that connects the islands and sailors together

Dear Captain Jack,
BOATING BOATING ETIQUETTE! ETIQUETTE!
Got a question? Ask a Pirate...
I’ve been boating for many years My boat spends most of the year in the marina and then over summer I take it out for a couple of weeks along with the rest of the country who are on holiday. Trouble is, people just don’t get out of my way! I’ve got a big boat, shouldn’t all the smaller boats be the ones who move out of the way for me?
Thanks Mr Hook
Ahoy there Mr Hook,
Sadly there are lots of people out there who have been boating for ages, and think they know everything, but have never got round to actually learning the rules!
Have you heard about the COLREG‘s? This stands for the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. I suggest you have a read on the workshop on our website or take one of the many excellent courses available which will teach you how to understand when you should give way and when you should should ‘stand on’ If you are an Island Cruising member then you’ll also get a great discount!
It is essential that you and your crew understand the rules and know how to identify the different vessels - their lights and important day shapes and the different scenarios where you should give way.
And remember - even if you do know the rules, don’t automatically assume that others do - or that they are even keeping watch everyone has a responsibility to avoid a collision - so keep those eyes peeled, particularly at this time of the year when there are lots of crazy people like you on the water.
Happy sailing

Love great wine?
Say goodbye to heavy, breakable bottles onboard!
Greenskin Wine presents a premium wine experience in a convenient 750ml soft pouch, ideal for those who want to enjoy fine wine without the hassle of cruising with heavy, bulky, breakable bottles onboard.
With 8 varieties to choose from, they have a superb choice of whites and reds from the worldrenowned Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions of Western Australia. You can pre-order through their website and nominate to have your wine delivered anywhere within Australia for just $4.95 per 6-pack (3 or more cases FREE delivery).
Greenskin Wine pouches hold 750ml but are around half the size and weight of a standard bottle of wine, which will save on weight and loads of fridge and storage space onboard. They are also unbreakable, making them ideal when on the water. And once the joy is over, they fold flat, so you do not have to lug bulky empties with you!
Another fab bonus. If you just want a glass or two, simply squeeze all the air from the pouch and reseal, and your wine will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks, saving on wasted wine and money!
Sip Sustainably
Not only is the wine great quality, but Greenskin Wine pouches take 80% less energy to produce than a glass bottle, and due to their lightweight, compact nature, they take a lot less energy to transport.
The ultimate kicker is that the pouches are 100% recyclable. They even take care of the recycling. Every 6-pack comes with a postage-paid satchel, making it super easy to return your empties via AusPost for recycling.

For sale - Hydrovane windvane self-steering
New out of the UK 2016, been to the tropics and back to NZ 20182023 Was sitting unused over COVID period in Vanuatu from Nov 2019- Sept 2023 during which time it was covered, and the boat was on the hardstand The unit was mounted offset on a walkthrough transom Beale 33.
It is a very reluctant sale due to ill health and therefore no further offshore sailing for the boat. This extra crew named ‘Albi’ on our 2 handed adventures was our best investment for open water passage making, so simple and totally reliable.
This unit has a ‘stubby’ windvane which suited the backstay set up. We also had the autohelm able to be attached to its tiller for motoring.
‘Albi’ comes complete with pictured brackets and unit cover plus new spare pins and the original red Hydrovane vane cover which we didn’t use. Instead, I made one and kept this as a spare.
www.hydrovane.com are super supportive and will give advice all the way. You can also check out www.hydrovane.com/ourproduct/specifications/ for more details.
