There are lots of fantastic events for sailors happening at the moment, from the Australian Wooden Boat Festival earlier last month, the Auckland Boat Show & Moana Festival, the upcoming Women Who Sail Australia Gathering on the Bay and more! You can check out what is coming up later on in this month’s magazine
Earlier in February, I was invited to present to over 50 officials from Customs, Police, Navy and Fisheries in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Nauru, New Caledonia, Northern Mariana Islands, Vanuatu, French Polynesia and the Oceania Customs Organisation.
I spoke to them about Yacht movements in the Pacific, giving them an update on the benefits that sustainable Yachting Tourism brings to remote communities, and giving them some insights into what goes on behind the scenes with the Pacific Rally.
Pacific Nations have huge maritime borders to patrol with limited resources We can all do our bit to help make their jobs easier, by ensuring we complete all the correct formalities on arrival, keeping your AIS turned on while moving around, and understanding & adhering to each country’s local cultural protocols
If you need any help with this, join us on the Pacific Rally this season!
In the last month, the Pacific Rally participants have had training on OpenCPN and the use of the Project X tablet, a briefing on cruising through Tonga & New Caledonia, we had a presentation from the RCCNZ and Passage Guardian about rescue at sea and offshore communications, they’ve made a start on their Passage Plans, and they are about to get their rally packs sent out, which are packed with goodies from our rally partners, including a 200+ page rally guide book - which tells them everything they need to know about cruising the SW Pacific
In the next couple of months, we will be completing their Passage Plans, talking about sailing in Vanuatu & Fiji, South Pacific weather patterns & how to get the most out of their PredictWind subscription, and Documentation & Formalities.
Then they’ll just about be all set for their upcoming pre-departure events We’ve got some fantastic fun things going on in the Gold Coast, Marsden Cove & Bay of Islands before they set sail.
If you are planning on heading to the Pacific this season, you still have time to join us on the Pacific Rally and take advantage of all the great content, excellent advice and discounts from our rally partners. Click here for all the details.
The South Island Rally participants have been having a ball down in Fiordland and Stewart Island A kind person had repaired the secret canoe in the mountain lake so they were able to go for a paddle, and they’ve been warmly welcomed by all the friendly locals & fisherman along the way. We’ve already got people lining up for the South Island Rally next summer, drop me an email if you are interested, or keep an eye on the newsletter, and I’ll let you know when it is all ready to launch around mid-year.
I am currently back home in Christchurch, it has been great catching up with some of our Sail South to NZ rally participants who have been touring & driving around the South Island I love to be able to share some local tips on the best things to see while they explore this special part of the world.
If you’d like more cruising content like this in your inbox, please join us! New Zealanders’ love of boats goes supersize as large yachts debut at Auckland Boat Show More than 1.3 kilometres of boats on the water, and 200 more vessels on land mean this year’s Auckland Boat Show is lining up to be the biggest New Zealand’s ever seen.
When next month’s Auckland Boat Show kicks off on 6 March, it will be a celebration of New Zealanders’ love of being on the water. So much so that there will be more than 1.3 kilome-tres of boat on display on the marina alone. The show, in central Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre and Jellicoe Harbour, has become an annual release hub for new vessels and marine innovation. Once focused primarily on domestic releases, it’s grown into the region’s show of choice to release large yachts and other vessels from around the world as the New Zealand boating market increasingly seeks out the new, innovative, and luxurious.
“In the 24 years of the Auckland Boat Show, we’ve seen a distinctive increase in the size of yachts displayed at the show,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook.
“Not only are we seeing much larger boats on display, with this year’s largest vessel sitting at 29 metres, we’re also seeing demand for luxury charter yachts as New Zealanders take to the seas, both here and in international waters.”
Some of those large yachts now entering the New Zealand market are from the Greek brand, Omikron Yachts, which has recently been awarded the prestigious European Power-boat Award for its OT-60 and launched a new flagship OT-80 off the back of that success.
“We’ve recognised the need for bigger and bigger yachts to grace the sparkling Waitemata,” says Paul McDonald of McD Yachts, the brokerage house introducing both the OT-60 and OT-80 to New Zealand.
“People’s yachts are an extension of their lifestyle –so going from their spacious homes or holiday homes leaves them seeking a similar experience of comfort and space aboard their yacht. In addition, having a 60 ft plus motor yacht like the Omikron OT-60 gives the oppor-tunity of cruising Fiji or around the Pacific which gives a great winter vacation and also ex-tends the usability of the yacht throughout the year,” adds McDonald.
“This trend will only continue.” For the first time in New Zealand, two Sunreef yachts will be on display in a New Zealand boat show. At 23 metres, and with space for eight guests and three crew, Sunreef 70, Ginette is available for charter and of sale via Ocean Independence, and for charter comes complete with a full toy inventory, including a five metre Smuggler Marine RIB, two paddle boards, wind surfing, kite boarding, scuba diving, and game fishing equipment, plus a private chef to cook any catches.
“People are moving to bigger volume yachts and a catamaran suits that purpose superbly,” says Ocean Independence’s Blair MacLeod.
“A catamaran is also extremely stable and suits the new market of owners and charters who prioritise comfort, space, ease of handling and a strong connection to the water.”
For those who prefer to own, a Sunreef 80 ft motoryacht will be on show within the broker-age section of the show. A custom vessel, built for extended voyages, this yacht is spacious, luxurious and has four staterooms, an hydraulic swim platform and plenty of lounging areas to make the most of time on the water.
Another debut this year; European Marine will present the Sasga 55FB. This striking fly-bridge yacht is made for cruising with superb performance, excellent range, comfort, and ease of handling. Space onboard is well-suited to New Zealand conditions with a full fly-bridge, large sundeck and spacious interior to cater to any weather. For 15 years, Family Boats has brought BRIG RIBs to the New Zealand market with the lat-est model set to have its New Zealand premiere at the Auckland Boat Show. Recognised globally as a leader in innovation and design, BRIG continues to set the standard with the new Navigator 22. Featuring a reinforced deep-V hull, spacious console, ergonomic helm seating, and sharp design, this vessel delivers a thrilling, stable ride even at high speeds.
Tickets are on sale now for the Auckland Boat Show 2025, and visitors can expect growth on the 2024 show, which displayed 400 boats and a wide array of marine product and ser-vice companies. The event’s sea trial marina allows show visitors to not only learn about new products, vessels and services, but to also experience them on the Waitematā Harbour. companies. Known for that large sea trial area, and for providing a launching point for new marine releases, it is a favourite on the southern hemisphere marine calendar. The show also has a fast-growing reputation for being a hub for innovation releases, with new technologies and fine-tuned services released at the show from within New Zealand’s marine industry. “We’re a marine nation and it makes sense that we lead the world in creating better ways to be safer, faster, and more sustainable on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook. Tickets are on sale now. auckland-boatshow.com
On Saturday 25th January the Mahurangi Regatta kicked off. It was the usual exciting event, where an estimated 1000 people arrived to sail, cruise or watch the racing from spectator craft and the shore.
The stiff breeze from the west offered some exciting and sometimes challenging sailing. The predicted rain arrived in the evening but only slightly dampened the happy crowd who gathered for the CYA evening's entertainment.
The CYA put on a gourmet BBQ for 300, prepared and served by chefs, CYA members Tony, Andy and Jon with Corinne and Jane in support on the tables.
Alongside the BBQ was the jazz band with renown saxophonist, Nick Atkinson, who played through the evening on a raised platform while revellers listened, watched and danced. The site was adorned with flags from Iain and Glen from prize winning launch MEOLA, giving the event a very festive appearance.

I’m Lissa, a photographer based in Auckland, New Zealand and have been working in the industry for 15 years! I have helped crew on 8 sailing passages between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, sailed an epic mission around the outer Hauraki Gulf on my own tiny 22ft yacht and recently my partner Andrew and I took part in the South Island Rally on his catamaran!
Learning to sail:
Sailing hasn’t been in my family and I didn’t experience it growing up however I always loved being on and near the ocean. In my early 20s a friend and I went halves in an old wooden Sunburst sailing dinghy. We had no clue what we were doing so we were in for a steep learning curve, making many mistakes and trying to learn from them!
Learning how to rig the dinghy was our first big challenge, but thanks to Youtube we got there. We went out a few times just off the local beach staying close to shore. I found it terrifying, I hated when the boat heeled over, it felt so unnatural and uncomfortable and it was hard to know how far it could lean over before capsizing. Over time we slowly gained a bit of blind confidence and decided to get adventurous and launch at Te Atatu Peninsula and try to sail under the harbour bridge and back. It was amazing on the way there, a beautiful down wind sail, the boat stayed flat and stable and it was great. We went under the Auckland Harbour Bridge and felt like heroes.
After feeling like little legends we turned the boat around and pointed the bow back towards Te Atatu Peninsula. This is where it got tricky, all of a sudden it felt like the wind had strengthened, the boat was leaning over and we were sailing into choppy waves. Little did we know that we had mastered downwind sailing however sailing into the wind was a whole other story. We battled our way back up the inner harbour mostly sliding sideways, barely making any progress and at times even drifting back towards the bridge. We didn’t know what to do!
So after spending the majority of the afternoon trying to sail back to Te Atatu and not getting anywhere close, we decided to give up turn back towards the Harbour Bridge and sail into Westhaven.
Once turned around and sailing downwind again we were sweet. Slipped under the bridge and headed to the boat ramp at Westhaven and arranged to collect the car and trailer.
After that I enrolled myself into some sailing lessons to learn the basics of sailing, joined some boats during weekly racing, took any opportunity to jump on a yacht and learn from others leading to crewing on offshore passages and buying my own little yacht.
My own boat - Kiros:
I bought Kiros in 2020, a 22ft keeler built by Marlborough Fibre. Before I purchased Kiros I had been sailing on other peoples boats or had shared ownership of a boat so there was always another person to collaborate with and share the responsibility.
Kiros was another fast learning curve for me and helped me build up my confidence and trust my own decisions while sailing. She had a bucket for the toilet, fishing line and sinker for the depth sounder, mobile phone for weather updates, sitting room only down below, no anchor winch, shower or hot water, outside bbq used for breakfast lunch and dinner! Happy Days!
I was ecstatic to achieve my first solo overnighter on Kiros, it was a very special and rewarding experience! I sailed from Hobsonville Marina, under the Harbour Bridge (again), to Waiheke for the night. And even made it back! Sailing both upwind and downwind during the 2 day trip!
Over the summer break I decided to do a 2-3 week trip on her around the inner Hauraki Gulf! At the time, my mate Kodie was keen for an adventure and came along meaning that we could take Kiros further afield.
Offshore Passages:
My favourite times during passages are the sunsets/sunrises and seeing all the stars shining bright without the light pollution from land. I love losing sight of the shore and settling in to boat life as land life slips away and my whole world gets condensed to a small boat, bobbing around on the vast blue ocean. The highlight of a day can be as simple as a bird flying past breaking up the endless pallet of blue ocean and sky.
This is of course when everything is going well and the wind and sea state are behaving. I have also had passages where I’ve spent days up to my waist in water in the cockpit, getting knocked down (where the mast heels over so far that it almost touches the water), the wind howling so loud that we can’t hear each other on deck, getting thrown out of my bunk while trying to sleep, being severely sea sick, and wondering why the heck I am out there.
However there is something special about being out on the big blue ocean and I keep getting drawn back to it and absolutely love it!
Just a quick mention, Kodie is a legendary sailmaker and owns NZ Sails so if you are looking for some sweet NZ Sails be sure to check him out!
Being a little boat it took us a while to get anywhere but we made it to the Coromandel, then crossed the Coville Channel to visit Great Barrier Island and some friends for New Years! Once recovered from New Years we set off to the Mokohinau’s. The Mokohinau’s are a remote rugged group of rocks to the North of Great Barrier Island. They are only suitable when it’s calm as there are not many safe spots to anchor.
When we arrived another boatie asked us what we were doing all the way out there on such small yacht! The weather was calm enough for us to stay for a couple of days and soak it all in. Beautiful clear water, amazing birdsong, spectacular caves, epic views from the hike up to the light house (which was the only place we could get reception for the weather forecast). We kept a close eye on the weather as it would take us at least a day to get to a sheltered anchorage. Our next destination was the Hen and Chicks which also took a full day to sail to. Then it was off to Leigh for a burger and beer as we were running low on provisions. From there we spent a few days making our way back to Auckland! Definitely a special trip for a little yacht!
I had loads of help from my friends and family during my ownership of Kiros, teaching me lots, always keen to help out with boat jobs, and come out for sailing adventures. A special Thank You as I couldn’t have done it without them.
A few years ago my partner Andrew and I decided it was time to stretch the legs of his Lagoon 42.
We joined the 2023-2024 South Island Rally. Sailing from Auckland, rounding the top of the North Island, then down the West Coast arriving at the top of the South Island. We explored Abel Tasman, Pelorus Sound and Queen Charlotte Sound then headed back to Auckland the same way we came via the West Coast of the North Island.
Some highlights were being surrounded by Orca while anchoring for the night at the very top of NZ, North Cape. Experiencing the two oceans meet at Cape Reigna, exploring the top of the South Island and catching and eating the beautiful blue cod. However, the ultimate moment for me was choosing to alter our course on our way back up the West Coast of the North Island to do a drive by of Piha, Bethells and Muriwai Beach.
I spent much of my childhood at Bethells Beach fishing with dad, playing and exploring with my sisters, and in my adult years going for many walks and of course photoshoots.
During our drive by we had light wind and impressive ocean swells. Watching the big seas roll towards land bursting into towers of white water as they collided with the cliffs on shore. Muriwai had even closed the surf school because the waves were too big. We were conservative and kept a safe distance from the shore while soaking up the experience between getting calls from friends and family standing on the cliffs excited to be seeing us sail by.
In all the time I’ve spent on the West Coast I have never seen a sail boat go past those beaches let alone a cruising catamaran, It was powerful experience and one I will remember forever!
I love the variety of photography jobs I get to do. Throughout my career so far I have enjoyed photographing superyachts, hanging out of helicopters, photograph beautiful portraits, epic events, drone operations, and amazing projects that the building industry creates throughout NZ. All the while meeting wonderful people and businesses along the way!

Over two days last week, Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Naval Task Group 107 launched live-fire exercises in the Tasman Sea without any warning to the Australian or New Zealand governments. The exercises were directly under the flight path of one of the busiest routes across the Tasman Sea. As a precaution, for three days all flights across the Tasman were diverted to avoid the firing zone.
China’s aggressive act is a shot across the bow to New Zealand and Australia, but also to the countries of the wider Pacific It is a demonstration of China’s growing sea power in the Southwest Pacific
China now has the world’s largest navy, with 234 vessels to the U S Navy’s 219 The U S fleet is dated, and it would take decades to ramp up production China clearly has the capacity to rival U S military supremacy in the Pacific Combined, Australia’s and New Zealand’s naval fleets consist of only 12 vessels
China has also been using its People’s Armed Police Force Coast Guard vessels to establish a regular presence across the Western, Central and North Pacific Fisheries Commission Convention Area – in other words the whole of the Pacific. China’s maritime security forces are legally allowed to board any foreign fishing vessels on the high seas.
China is preparing to station a permanent presence in the Southwest Pacific. They have demonstrated over several years that it is blue-water capable. China has built dual-use port and airport facilities in Vanuatu and the Solomons, with more planned in Kiribati and the Cook Islands.

Every year, hundreds of people across Australia participate in annual Clean Up Australia Day events and Coral Sea Marina is once again rallying the Whitsundays community to take action by joining them on Sunday 2nd March for a clean-up of the region.
In partnership with the Tangaroa Blue Foundation and the ReefClean program, Coral Sea Marina are putting out the call to the Airlie Beach community to come and leave their mark in preserving the pristine waters and coastline of the Whitsundays.
Volunteers are invited to spend the morning collecting litter on the land, around the islands or from our waterways Debris recovered will be sorted and recorded by Tangaroa Blue and their passionate volunteers, contributing valuable data to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) This national data collection program helps identify sources of pollution and assists with the development of source reduction programs which protect our marine environment
“For the last few years we have coordinated a Clean-Up Australia event, firstly to engage the community to seek simple ways they can positively contribute to protecting the marine environment, but also to show our support for this important national initiative,” explains Joscelyn O’Keefe, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Coral Sea Marina.
More than 22 million Aussies have participated in Clean Up Australia Day activities in the last three decades and as Australia’s waste challenges continue to grow, there is an increasing need to step up and support solutions. With attendance at last year’s event of around 60 people, the marina is hoping to attract a crowd of at least 100 to this year’s event.
Ms O’Keefe continues, “The engagement we have had in the past, particularly from those with young families, is incredibly encouraging and a Clean Up Australia day event provides the community with a platform to make a difference in our own backyard ”
“By working together with Tangaroa Blue and ReefClean, we can ensure that items collected contribute to meaningful data records and positive change for our region. Last year we collected over 100kg of litter which was successfully removed, in some cases recycled, from entering our waterways and polluting the marine environment.”
The Clean Up Australia Day event starts at 8am with volunteers to meet at Meeting Point D, Coral Sea Marina. All volunteers are encouraged to be sun safe – wear long sleeved clothing, a hat, sunscreen and bring plenty of water Collection bags and gloves will be provided on the day
Following the clean-up, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about the impact of marine debris from the team at Tangaroa Blue and how to take ongoing action to protect our oceans
The marina’s Coral Sea Academy provides opportunities for visitors and the community to engage with environmental programs and participate in volunteer opportunities and community events The mission of the Coral Sea Academy is to educate and inspire people to ‘travel for good’ and leave the Whitsundays better than they found it, and the annual Clean Up Australia Day event is the perfect opportunity to locals and visitors to step up for the environment.
For more information on the event or to register your interest visit the Coral Sea Academy website: coralseaacademy.com
For those unable to attend this year’s event, Ms O’Keefe explains how easy it is to make an impact, “The next time you are at the beach, boating around the islands or walking along the waterfront, collect 5 pieces of litter and dispose of them correctly – encourage your family and friends to do the same. Every day can be Clean Up Australia day – it doesn’t just need to be on 2 March!”

Contracts have been awarded for three projects to drive improvements in technology to control exotic caulerpa seaweed.
The three projects share the $10 million funding injection announced last year and focus on methods that have previously shown promise.
Northland Regional Council (NRC) has been awarded the largest contract, with just over $6 million to progress its large-scale mechanical suction dredging technique that was trialled in Omakiwi Cove last year.
The first phase of the work, funded under the accelerated programme, demonstrated that the method can remove exotic caulerpa from sandy areas of the seafloor, and now the plan is to increase its effectiveness.
The project team is developing a new tool called a ‘submersible dredge planer’ which will operate remotely on the seafloor, rather than from a barge, and aims to remove caulerpa in a single pass. The new system will include a dredge head, pumping arrangement, GPS positioning system, dredge spoil processing plant, and disposal system.
Work is in the planning and development stage, with trials in the water expected to start later in the year.
The second project, receiving $2 million in funding, is developing an ultra-violet light (UV-C) irradiation tool to kill the pest seaweed.
This contract has been awarded to Advanced Aquarium Technologies Ltd who aim to create a costeffective option to treat exotic invasive caulerpa without needing to deploy SCUBA divers. It will require minimal labour, operate off a vessel, and be able to be used at any depth of water from intertidal zones to 40m depth which is important as exotic caulerpa can grow at this depth. The team expects to trial the technology in Omakiwi Cove, Northland, in March.
The third project, with $1.9 million funding, is a special underwater treatment ‘chamber’ with a frame which covers the area of caulerpa being treated and has curtains to contain chlorine within the specific treatment area.
This chlorine treatment chamber, being developed by Commercial Dive Specialists, will be able to hover over the seabed and pass over rocks and other obstacles without getting stuck. Work on this project also starts within weeks at Omakiwi Cove.
Exotic caulerpa has recently been detected at a handful of locations close to known affected areas in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel.
It has been confirmed present in three Bay of Islands sites outside of the main infested area at Omakiwi Cove - Paradise Bay on the western side of Urapukapuka Island, the southern end of Motukiekie Island, and at Army Bay on Motorua Island.
The three locations are close to, but outside of, the controlled area at Omakiwi Cove where legal restrictions on anchoring and fishing are in place.
Biosecurity New Zealand is working with Council and mana whenua to determine next steps which will include further surveillance to help understand the state of infestation at each site and whether control measures are feasible.
There have also been five further detections in the Auckland and Waikato regions since the last issue of this newsletter:
Repanga/Cuvier Island, between Aotea Great Barrier Island and Ahuahu Great Mercury Island, Waikato
Square Top Island, off the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato
Hakaimango Point, Waiheke Island, Auckland
Kaiaraara Bay, Aotea Great Barrier Island, Auckland
Katherine Bay, Aotea Great Barrier Island, Auckland.
There will be further investigation at these sites and, where feasible, treatment will be carried out.
New detection framework
Exotic caulerpa is a challenging pest with the ability to be easily spread, both naturally and by hitchhiking on vessels and equipment.
With the volume of caulerpa out there, and its propensity for spread, continuing to find it in new locations is disappointing but not unexpected. Biosecurity New Zealand and partners have drafted a framework setting out the process for responding to new detections that arise.
The process under this framework is to work with councils, mana whenua and the Department of Conservation to survey areas around new detections, understand the scale of the incursion, and where feasible, take action to remove the exotic caulerpa.
There is an $800,000 budget allocated for surveillance and, where feasible, taking quick action to remove exotic caulerpa.
Auckland University, in partnership with Ngāti Manuhiri, is conducting a long-term impact study to support research on the ecology and impacts of exotic caulerpa on marine ecosystems and the cultural impacts of exotic caulerpa incursions.
The project will assess the environmental drivers that support the establishment and growth of exotic caulerpa, the impacts of it on seafloor biodiversity and ecosystem function, and cultural impacts. There will be approximately monthly trips to focus sites (Mokohinau Islands, western Coromandel and Kawau Island) from now through to May, and a report is expected to be completed by 1 June 2025.
The aim of this NIWA project, started under the Accelerated Programme last year at Waiheke Island, is to significantly increase the rate at which effective surveillance for exotic caulerpa can be performed. The work also aims to operationalise and accelerate the development of automated detection technology for rapidly surveying large areas of sea floor in a culturally appropriate manner; and define critical parameters for effective visual and automated detection of invasive caulerpa.
The project had its completion deadline extended to the end of March, and the focus of this year’s work has been the use of remote operated vehicle (ROV) imaging so that this technology can be more widely used in the community.
The project team are also developing standardised surveillance plans and guidance for the wider use of ROVs and towed vehicles (TOVs) and AI.
NIWA is carrying out research following reports that exotic caulerpa had appeared to ‘die back’ in some areas.
Initial results showed there had been large reductions in the cover of exotic caulerpa at some sites, notably in Onetangi Bay, Waiheke Island and Okupu Blind Bay at Aotea.
The biggest areas of decline occurred in caulerpa on soft sediment or sandy seabed, however, it was still present in large amounts in rocky and intertidal areas and in deeper waters.
NIWA is continuing this study to further determine the extent and patterns of reduction and whether this is persisting. They are also attempting to identify the major drivers, environmental or biological variables associated with the exotic caulerpa biomass reductions.
This includes further laboratory work and gathering additional information from communities to contribute to the study.

New Zealand’s festival on the water is back in 2025
The Auckland Boat Show, scheduled to run as part of Moana Auckland, New Zealand’s Ocean Festival, is timed to allow boating enthusiasts to enjoy a feast of March marine activities.
Making the most of an Auckland summer on the water, the show gathers together 2025’s latest releases from boatbuilders and brokers across New Zealand and the world It’s a show which has become known throughout the region for the spectacular sight of the central city filling with hundreds of boats
The Auckland Boat Show is one of the key events of Moana Auckland and runs after the NZ Millennium Cup superyacht regatta in February to give visitors plenty to enjoy on the water
A large marina display will spread through Jellicoe Harbour, filling the space outside the former America’s Cup bases with newly-released yachts, motoryachts, multihulls, superyachts, amphibious vessels and trailer boats. On-land exhibits will complement the on-water component of the show, taking up a Viaduct Events Centre spot in central Auckland’s buzzing Wynyard Quarter.
“There’s nothing like an Auckland summer on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook.
“Which is why we stage the show in early March. It’s such a pleasure to showcase New Zealand’s marine industry where it’s at its best; on the water, enjoying the sun and lifestyle that boating brings.”
Uniquely in this part of the world, sea trials are a crucial component of the event. With the Waitematā Harbour as the show’s neighbour, manufacturers and brokers are able to demonstrate vessels in their element to buyers, allowing them to bring performance, sea-kindliness and handling to the forefront
For 24 years the Auckland Boat Show has also provided an important stage for regional and international parts and services providers With a large on-land component of the show, the event has become a launching point each year for annual releases of innovative products and new developments

For Ben, a solo offshore sailor from New Zealand, one date stands out in his mind; he will turn 25 years old the day he boards his flight to the U.K., marking the beginning of the next chapter in his offshore solo sailing journey.
That chapter leads him to the start line of one of the most prestigious races in the world – La Solitaire du Figaro.
Ben is only the second New Zealander to have completed this demanding race, a milestone that pushes him further in his pursuit of excellence in offshore sailing.
But what exactly makes La Solitaire du Figaro so prestigious?
What is it about this race that keeps sailors coming back year after year, despite the challenges and tough competition?
Founded in 1970, La Solitaire du Figaro has become the ultimate test for solo offshore sailors. Known as one of the hardest challenges in sailing, it is also celebrated for its history, prestige, and the high level of competition it attracts.
The race typically lasts for a month, starting in mid-August and ending in mid-September, with the course changing every year. Covering between 1500 and 2000 miles over three stages, it pushes sailors to the limit in often difficult conditions. With 35 to 40 boats on the start line, it is a true test of endurance, skill, and strategy.
It’s no surprise that every solo sailor aspires to compete in it.
Why is La Solitaire du Figaro So Tough?
Ben explains that there’s no denying it: La Solitaire du Figaro is tough. It’s not just the physical demands of solo sailing; it’s the mental strength required to stay focused around the clock, race against the clock, handle the elements, and push the boat to its maximum. Fatigue can cloud judgment, and one wrong decision can determine the outcome of the race.
What makes this race stand out is the fact that all the boats are identical. The Figaro fleet consists of onedesign boats, specifically built for solo racing. This means that the race isn’t about who has the fastest boat, but about who can get the most out of their boat.
These boats are lightweight, fast, and hard to manage in tough conditions. Sailors must rely on their skill, strategy, and decision-making to gain an advantage.
In La Solitaire du Figaro, the competition is intense. With identical boats and similar conditions, the race is a true test of sailing talent, where every sailor is constantly evaluating their competition and adjusting their strategy. It’s a nonstop battle where no one is ever out of the race until the very end.
As solo sailors, they thrive on the challenge of racing alone, testing their limits, and pushing themselves beyond what they think is possible. It’s not just about finishing – it’s about mastering the art of solo offshore racing.
They live, breathe, and sleep sailing during the race, constantly thinking about each move, learning, adapting, and overcoming setbacks.
La Solitaire du Figaro is often seen as the final step before moving into the bigger leagues, like the Class 40 or the IMOCA 60 – classes that are home to the stars of the Vendée Globe. any sailors who have raced in La Solitaire du Figaro have gone on to win some of the world’s toughest races, including the Vendée Globe, which is the ultimate test in solo offshore racing.
So Why is Ben doing the La Solitaire du Figaro? (Again)
For Ben, it’s about more than just the challenge. It’s about being part of something bigger than himself, testing the limits of his skills and his boat, and seeing how far he can go. In La Solitaire du Figaro, entrants are tested not just as sailors but as individuals. Every year, every race, is a chance to learn, grow, and keep pushing forward in the pursuit of excellence.
Ben notes “As I prepare for this years race, I look back at my first experience in this iconic event, in 2023. It was a tough one, but it taught me that to succeed, I have to be relentless – in my training, my mindset, and my passion for the sport. The race offers no shortcuts, no easy way out – just real competition and endless chances for personal growth.
So, why do solo sailors like Ben keep coming back to La Solitaire du Figaro?
“It’s simple - because it challenges us, tests everything we’re made of, and gives us the opportunity to be part of a legacy of great sailors. It’s not just a race – it’s a journey, one I’m excited to continue”. Keep up to date with Ben’s preparation for Europe by giving him a cheeky “like” on the his social media channels.

Greg Luck has been a frequent contributor to the Down Under Rally Magazine He has released a new third edition of Cruising the Queensland Coast, his guide for yachts cruising from the Gold Coast to Lizard Island.
While cruising in 2023, Greg was struck by the number of cruisers who had adopted Starlink. The cheapest way to use it is on the Roam plan, designed to work over land. At sea, the very expensive Maritime plan must be used. Starlink “land” includes many islands and some reefs using a hexagonal tiling system. It can be hit and miss as to whether an anchorage or mooring is on “land” or sea for Starlink. New in the 3rd edition, each anchorage and mooring includes a Starlink icon to indicate land or sea.
Along with a print edition, the book comes as an eBook for tablets. However, the big players support a limited number of countries, and usually not the overseas territories of those countries such as Noumea or Tahiti. This has been a problem for some cruisers. The 3rd edition adds Rakuten Kobo, which supports 244 countries and overseas territories with excellent coverage for the Pacific.
The third edition is fully updated with:
•many new public moorings for the Townsville, Discovery and Cassowary coasts and the Whitsundays
•new anchorages, taking the total to 503 anchorages and moorings
•new public pontoons
•updates to the K’Gari Coast for the new Great Sandy Marine Park management plan
•Starlink land versus ocean status for each anchorage, mooring and marina along with the Telstra mobile reception
•digital TV reception strength for each anchorage
•latest marina changes including comprehensive information on super yacht berths and resultant marina berth layout changes
•S63 official Hydrographic chart references for each coast and how to use Australian
Hydrographic charts on apps and chart plotters along with other navigation data sources
•expanded coverage of the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay
•recalculated wave roses for recent Waverider buoy placements such as the Wide Bay Bar
•higher-resolution aerial images and photos in the print version
•numerous other changes and updates

HYDROVANE IS BOTH:
A completely independent mechanical system (ie. non-electrical) that steers the boat on a wind-based course. Easiest to operate, with no lines in the cockpit, and excellent on all points of sail and in all conditions.
It is an Auxiliary Rudder type of windvane system – the Vane drives its own Rudder via a sophisticated Drive Unit linkage.
Inherently a second Rudder and Steering System for your boat.
It is the strongest Emergency Rudder and Steering System available today. Always in place, nothing to set-up – takes the fear out of losing your rudder or breaking your vessel’s steering mid passage or close to shore.
We are very proud to be a part of the South Pacific Sailing Network - a group of like minded businesses and countries around the South Pacific who are all committed to promoting sustainable yachting tourism and advocating on behalf of cruisers exploring the South Pacific.
Our Pacific rally is the pathway that connects the islands and sailors together

Dear Captain Jack,
I’ve been boating for many years My boat spends most of the year in the marina and then over summer I take it out for a couple of weeks along with the rest of the country who are on holiday. Trouble is, people just don’t get out of my way! I’ve got a big boat, shouldn’t all the smaller boats be the ones who move out of the way for me?
Thanks Mr Hook
Ahoy there Mr Hook,
Sadly there are lots of people out there who have been boating for ages, and think they know everything, but have never got round to actually learning the rules!
Have you heard about the COLREG‘s? This stands for the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. I suggest you have a read on the workshop on our website or take one of the many excellent courses available which will teach you how to understand when you should give way and when you should should ‘stand on’ If you are an Island Cruising member then you’ll also get a great discount!
It is essential that you and your crew understand the rules and know how to identify the different vessels - their lights and important day shapes and the different scenarios where you should give way.
And remember - even if you do know the rules, don’t automatically assume that others do - or that they are even keeping watch everyone has a responsibility to avoid a collision - so keep those eyes peeled, particularly at this time of the year when there are lots of crazy people like you on the water.
Happy sailing

Greenskin Wine presents a premium wine experience in a convenient 750ml soft pouch, ideal for those who want to enjoy fine wine without the hassle of cruising with heavy, bulky, breakable bottles onboard.
With 8 varieties to choose from, they have a superb choice of whites and reds from the worldrenowned Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions of Western Australia. You can pre-order through their website and nominate to have your wine delivered anywhere within Australia for just $4.95 per 6-pack (3 or more cases FREE delivery).
Greenskin Wine pouches hold 750ml but are around half the size and weight of a standard bottle of wine, which will save on weight and loads of fridge and storage space onboard. They are also unbreakable, making them ideal when on the water. And once the joy is over, they fold flat, so you do not have to lug bulky empties with you!
Another fab bonus. If you just want a glass or two, simply squeeze all the air from the pouch and reseal, and your wine will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks, saving on wasted wine and money!
Not only is the wine great quality, but Greenskin Wine pouches take 80% less energy to produce than a glass bottle, and due to their lightweight, compact nature, they take a lot less energy to transport.
The ultimate kicker is that the pouches are 100% recyclable. They even take care of the recycling. Every 6-pack comes with a postage-paid satchel, making it super easy to return your empties via AusPost for recycling.

The Sundeer & Deerfoot designed boats from Steve Dashew are regarded as the best short handed cruising boats in the world, bar none. With a solidly built GRP / Kevlar hull, easily managed sail plan, shallow draft and moveable water ballast they make 200+ mile days easy for a crew of 2 or more in comfort and safety. It is very rare for one of these boats to come on the market.

2. Coppins Sea claw -New Apr 2019. Carried on trans Tasman voyage. Also never used.
Both made in Motueka - the best sea anchor makers in the world! Price by negotiation.

New out of the UK 2016, been to the tropics and back to NZ 20182023 Was sitting unused over COVID period in Vanuatu from Nov 2019- Sept 2023 during which time it was covered, and the boat was on the hardstand The unit was mounted offset on a walkthrough transom Beale 33.
It is a very reluctant sale due to ill health and therefore no further offshore sailing for the boat. This extra crew named ‘Albi’ on our 2 handed adventures was our best investment for open water passage making, so simple and totally reliable.
This unit has a ‘stubby’ windvane which suited the backstay set up. We also had the autohelm able to be attached to its tiller for motoring.
‘Albi’ comes complete with pictured brackets and unit cover plus new spare pins and the original red Hydrovane vane cover which we didn’t use. Instead, I made one and kept this as a spare.
www.hydrovane.com are super supportive and will give advice all the way. You can also check out www.hydrovane.com/ourproduct/specifications/ for more details.
