But it’s not about taking the fun out of things. There are many thrilling electric toys available, such as the electric surfboards and foils together with some stylish bikes and scooters for zipping around the quays on. Even non-powered toys are becoming more popular such as foldable dingies, paddle boards and water bikes. Once again, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, contributors, PR agencies and friends in the industry, that have helped us put this industry leading supplement together.

Welcome to our fourth annual edition of the Tenders & Toys guide. You’d think at this stage putting together this supplement would be getting easier! But, each and every year, there are more and more talented designers, innovators and manufacturers bringing more boats and toys to the market place. Of course the environment is becoming an important point of consideration, hence we find a new selection of electric and hybrid tenders appearing. It is our humble opinion, that, just as automotive innovation and development in the combustion engine, and budgets are redirected towards electrical powered units, the yachting industry will follow suit. If, as an industry, we wish to save our oceans, this is an obvious and necessary step we need to take.

I WANT ONE OF THOSE Captain Graham Bell is an experienced yacht captain with over 26 years of experience in the industry and with the past 20 years as a captain. Graham has in-depth knowledge of both the private and charter yacht business, as well as new builds and refits. ONBOARD asked him about his favourite superyacht toy, tender, ski boat and crew tender

BEST CREW TENDER

M

ore than 20years ago, as Graham was rising up the ranks, two brothers started building boats in their garden shed. Six years later Williams Jet Tenders delivered its first craft to a Fairline Targa 43. This development reshaped the industry and as they say, the rest is history. Proving big is not necessarily beautiful, Graham declares his best ever crew tender was a Williams Jet Tender. “Quick, nimble and great for beach landings, everyone jumped at the chance to take her out for a spin,” Graham

8 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

remembers. Over the past few years, the team at Williams has worked closely with major yacht builders, designers and crew to develop a range including; the EVO Jet, Diesel Jet, Sport Jet, Turbo Jet and Mini Jet. Each tender has its unique purpose and is suitable for any size of mothership. Trusted by crew as a reliable and flexible work-horse, within the vast range of Williams tenders there is a model for practically every use on board, from guest tenders to ski boats, to those suitable for smaller yachts around 30m.

MUST HAVE TOY

A

s an experienced charter captain, Graham has dealt with charter guests from every corner of the globe of all ages. Keeping guests entertained on board, one would think is an easy task, but as every experienced captain knows, there will always be a difference in how active the guests want to be. With the myriad of water toys available in today’s market, there is no shortage of choice but as Graham comments, “It always comes back to the old faithful jetski! For the guests, they just never get bored of

them, it’s just a constant turnaround for the crew, and every guest comes back with a smile on their face.” While giving a thought to the crew Graham tells us his favourite is the Sea-Doo range. “The new range is really light which makes it really easy for the crew to launch and bring back on board safely. They offer a great range of colours and sizes, are easy to maintain and never give us any trouble.” Indeed, Sea-Doo has been consistently providing the most innovative personal watercraft year after year.

BEST SKI BOAT

A

s we talked about before, charter guests are getting more demanding and are looking for that little bit extra in the form of tenders and toys. One area we’ve all seen tremendous growth in, is the specialist ski and wakeboats. These muscle boats have been extremely popular in the US for many years and the innovation in hull designs and creating the perfect wake has increased massively over the past two or three years. Graham found this one really easy to answer when asked about his favourite ski boat; “Mastercraft. Just brilliant, you can pack a load of guests on board these beasts and still hit some great speeds in total comfort, but for the guests who are into water skiing or wake boarding, these boats are just brilliant. They look great too and are a real head turner in the Mediterranean.” Indeed, we’ve found many ski boat brands working closely with superyachts these days, and thinking more practicably, about how they fit into the onboard tender garages and adding specialist lifting points. Our advice, certainly add this to your wish list.

BEST TENDER I’VE EVER HAD

T

hroughout a long career on both sides of the Atlantic, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Graham has had the chance to test and drive various tenders. In the early days of his career, the yachts were obviously smaller and there was therefore the need for a utility tender that could perform across a number of duties. As time went on and yachts became larger, the choice of tenders also expanded massively. As you can imagine, Graham has since had the pleasure of driving many RIBs, limo tenders, ski boats and a myriad

of crew and general purpose tenders. However, when asked about his all time favourite, he was quick to reminisce back to his days on Lady Mona K (previously Lady Ghislaine, built for the late media tycoon Robert Maxwell). Although a sizeable Amels yacht at 56m, Graham had a utility tender on board, the trusty Boston Whaler with a Volvo Penta inboard. Graham remembers, “It was tough, sturdy, easy to drive, and ticked all the boxes, never a problem. The guests and crew all loved it!”

MONEY NO OBJECT

A

s we have mentioned before, yachts are getting larger and the demands from owners and guests are getting higher. So, given a ‘money no object budget’ which toy would Graham buy? “Easy,” he quips. “It’s got to be a submarine. Anyone chartering a yacht obviously has an interest in the ocean (well, unless they just want to be seen sipping Cristal on the deck), so being able to discover the wonders that the ocean can offer is a given. What’s the point of going into space, when we haven’t even discovered the ocean properly!” Obviously not for every yacht, but the main players in the market like Triton, Seamagine, U-Boat Worx are bringing new subs to the market at quite a rapid rate. Partly driven by NGOs and other environmental organisations, discovering what the deep is hiding and learning how to protect and save these precious oceans is a global necessity. Today we find many yachts are doubling up and helping research companies across the globe. Graham adds, “These vehicles are getting smaller, lighter, stronger and well, maybe not more affordable, but I’d love one onboard.”

he new ROM 28 is the kind of boat you might expect to see centre screen in the latest James Bond movie. It’s certainly not the kind of average-looking RIB or workmanlike tender that you would expect to find inside the dark and gloomy recess of a yacht’s tender & toys garage.

hull and interior with that of the mother ship, oh no. The level of personalisation and uniqueness available with ordering a new ROM boat goes far, far deeper than that.

The original ROM concept for a beautifully hand-made, fast, glamorous, yet practical sports boat, that could realistically double as a practical tender was born out of company owner, Jorge Martins’ frustration from not being able to get what he wanted from a new production boat on the open market. A Portuguese national, Jorge recognised there was a gap in the market for a sports boat manufacturer willing to build small boats to a superyacht quality standard, yet with fair and reasonable starting prices and with the option for a fully customisable final spec if required. And here we are not just talking about colour-matching the

Prepare yourself for a life changing experience that combines the best in innovation and technology on the open waves

Apart from making some simple aesthetic changes to the hull colour, customers can impart their desire and influence upon nearly every other aspect, such as the cockpit seating configuration, the design of the helm station and driver’s console, all the way through to fit-out of the front cabin interior, the design, use and layout of the aft deck, in fact, almost every aspect can be discussed, evaluated and costed-out in terms of feasibility, design and final execution. Jorge’s own unique vision is expressed in the high-quality finish and deep lustre of the metallic paintwork used on the first ROM 28 hull, referred to aptly as the ‘Black Mirror’. Paired, in this case, with Mercury’s 6.2litre BRAVO 350HP Mercruiser engine, the ROM 28 accelerates effortlessly, smoothly and progressively up to 50 knots max speed, with 35 litres/hour fuel burn at max speed. With hull numbers 2 and 3 already reserved, never before have superyacht owners had this much freedom in the design of their next new tender or custom-made chase boat. HAVE FUN BUT KEEP IT SAFE I

f you are working on the water the chances are that you are not there due to your love for bureaucracy, red tape and government imposed regulation. Most of us accept that some level of regulation is necessary to ensure safety is maintained for both guests and crew. However, it is fair to say that our hope is that regulation is limited to that which is needed, rather than legislation merely for the sake of it.

How much legislation is too much legislation? Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, looks at safety in the yachting industry surrounding the use of Personal Water Crafts

Very few industries these days work without some form of legislative controls in place. Those that do, have generally managed to achieve a significant level of ‘selfregulation’. Put simply, where an industry can demonstrate that it is able to safely manage itself and its operation, government is far less likely to feel the need to step in, create a raft of draconian and unhelpful laws and then set about enforcing them. Step back to the early 2000s. Whilst vessels and crew within the yachting industry were already subject to various port and flag state maritime regulations, there was one aspect of the sector that was not. Personal Watercraft (PWCs) had continued to grow in popularity within yachting and by some fluke had, to date, managed to avoid becoming bound in red tape by the maritime world. As with most things in life that are neither regulated nor able to follow established guidelines or examples of good practice, it was only a matter of time until the train was likely to come off the rails. It is no great surprise that when you mixed high speed equipment and inexperience together, the outcome was a reasonably steady stream of serious incidents resulting in near misses, injuries and in some cases fatalities. The yachting industry, led by the PYA (now known as the Professional Yachting Association) approached the RYA to seek its help.

16 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

The industry was looking for a solution to a problem. It needed something that would allow safe and consistent PWC training on board yachts, whilst at the same time providing evidence that the training had taken place. The training and the associated evidence needed to be credible enough that it would be accepted by a range of port authorities all over the world. Most importantly, the training needed to result in a safe operating environment that greatly reduced the likelihood of accidents and unsafe or anti-social use of PWC’s associated with the yachting industry. The RYA already had a long history of training people in practical on-the-water activities for many different forms of craft. Some years earlier the RYA had created its own PWC proficiency scheme which had been well received, both in the UK and Europe. Discussions ensued, consultation across the industry was undertaken and in around 2007 the RYA PWC Safety Scheme was launched to the superyacht industry. Since 2007 the number of superyachts that hold RYA recognition for the delivery of RYA PWC courses has grown to more than 400. That number continues to grow as awareness of the scheme expands and the requirement for some form of evidence of PWC proficiency is enforced more rigorously around the world. What is the RYA PWC Safety Scheme and why is it so popular? The concept is simple. RYA-trained instructors, a structured training course for students, personal watercraft and supporting safety boat, established safety management systems, carefully controlled certification processes and an annual inspection regime by an RYA inspector. Hey presto! There you have a scheme that has simultaneously had a massive impact on the reduction of the number of PWC accidents, whilst at

the same time providing port authorities the world over with confidence that the holder of an RYA PWC Safety Certificate is sufficiently competent to operate the craft within their jurisdiction. The RYA Training Recognition process is all about quality. The most important aspect of any of the RYA Training schemes is the training that each and every RYA instructor must undergo before they are qualified to teach. Potential PWC instructors are no different. They should ensure they have adequate experience on PWCs themselves before putting themselves forward for training as an instructor. Once trained, the instructor can take charge of responsibility for the delivery of RYA PWC training on board the yacht. Prior to RYA Training Recognition status being granted to the yacht, the crew member on board who has been designated to take responsibility for the RYA Training activities will need to have carefully prepared risk assessments, operating procedures and various other documents to support the proposed training. Once all of this is done an application for RYA recognition can be submitted and an inspection arranged.

Since 2007 the number of superyachts that hold RYA recognition for the delivery of RYA PWC courses has grown to more than 400.

The inspection process is of course intended to ensure compliance with the necessary high standards of RYA Training. However, it is also intended to provide the opportunity for the on board instructors and any other relevant crew to seek input from and ask questions of the inspector, all of whom are RYA Instructor Trainers and have a wealth of knowledge to share. Following an inspection there may well be some further actions required to iron out details, but generally speaking RYA Recognition can usually be granted very soon after an inspection has taken place. From then on, training materials and certificates can be ordered and delivery of training for guests can commence. In order to maintain RYA Training Recognition status the yacht will need to undergo an annual inspection of its RYA PWC operation, during which time compliance is again assessed and the instructors provided with further opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from the inspector and, access updated materials on an ongoing basis. What does the guest see? The training is all about the guest and how to teach them practically what they need to know to safely use and enjoy a PWC in the context of the yacht from which they are operating.

Training will begin with a good explanation of the equipment whilst on board the yacht and a safety briefing outlining the key DOs and DON’Ts. From there it is time to go afloat with the instructor and a small number of guests to first demonstrate and then allow practice under supervision of the various key aspects of PWC operation.

longer depending on a variety of factors. The emphasis is on safety whilst at the same time keeping it fun. Once completed, the guest will be issued with a plasticised photo certificate that can be carried whilst afloat for presentation to authorities. The certificate is valid for the duration of the guests time aboard the yacht.

The instructor is able to use his or her discretion as to how long the session or sessions need to be, which will usually be determined by the number of guests involved and the speed with which they pick up the necessary information and skills. As a guide however, courses are a minimum of 1 hour but may take a little

LET THERE BE LIGHT Don’t let marine growth dim your lights. Leaders in anti-foul products Propspeed look at the solutions for protecting your underwater lights

T

he issue of fouling below the waterline continues to grow, with invasive species hitching a ride and spreading wherever a vessel goes. Not only does fouling damage marine ecosystems, but it also harms the performance of the marine craft. How to protect all underwater assets from marine growth and maximise performance? Using coatings to protect underwater assets is a vital part of boat maintenance. Biofouling, the accumulation of marine life on vessels’ running gear, increases drag and fuel costs. While growth on underwater lights and transducers negatively impacts their performance and can damage the delicate components.

Propspeed uses a two-component etching primer, which bonds to the metal substrate, and a clear silicone topcoat, which provides an ultra-smooth outer layer. Combined, they provide an integrated coating system that stays firmly adhered to metal substrates, dramatically reducing fouling.

What started with a simple propeller coating, Propspeed has grown into a company that now has solutions for all of the underwater assets on vessels.

Propspeed also protects underwater metals from corrosion, which occurs through electrochemical reactions with the metal’s environment. Quality coatings like Propspeed reduce the risk of corrosion by electrically isolating the metal, as well as limiting the exchanges between the ions and the gases contained in the water and in the metal. In short, if a reaction can’t occur, there will be no corrosion. It is also vital to ensure your protective coating is paired with the right anode to ensure efficient cathodic protection and the best coating performance and longevity.

Bay of Islands, New Zealand - Where it all began: Propspeed is the original running gear foul-release coating system. It is specially formulated to prevent marine growth from bonding to metal surfaces below the waterline. Propspeed protects precious underwater metal assets such as propellers, shafts, struts, sail drives, rudders and more.

Protect more than just metals: Lightspeed and Foulfree Underwater lights have become a highly desirable feature on boats. Lightspeed offers an easy and affordable solution to reduce maintenance, sustaining lighting system performance and protect underwater lights. Underwater lights generate light and heat, creating environmental conditions

that favour marine growth. The growth then interferes with underwater lights’ ability to emit light as it covers the lens. Efforts to remove this growth, barnacles, in particular, can damage delicate lighting components, given that barnacle glue is the most potent adhesive in nature and six times more powerful than any manmade glue. Conventional antifouling paint used on hulls and running gear is unsuitable for underwater lights as it is not transparent and interferes with light transmittance. This is where Lightspeed comes in. Lightspeed harnesses the science behind Propspeed to provide an effective solution for fouling on underwater lights. As it is fully transparent, it has zero interference with light transmittance. It also contains an adhesion promoter which ensures the coating lasts for 12-24 months, reducing maintenance time and costs. Foulfree Try the revolutionary foul-release coating that protects transducers from marine growth to ensure accurate signal transmission. Foulfree is certified by Airmar and has been tested to ensure it has no adverse effects on the performance of transducers. OUR FRIENDS ELECTRIC Reducing our impact on the environment has never been more important than it is now. The yachting industry is ramping up research and innovation to bring more electric boats to the market. Frances and Michael Howorth take a look at some of the very best electric tenders and discuss the challenges faced by the designers and engineers

T

he growth potential for fully electric and sustainable tenders is huge and the superyacht industry is showing a healthy appetite for the concept. Once you’ve tried out a boating experience in complete silence, without engine fumes or vibrations, it is almost impossible to go back. There is an increasing number of boat builders making moves in the electric tender space, meaning more and more boat lovers are coming into contact with electric boats. Once they do, it seems they’re hooked. If an incredible user experience and saving our planet is not enough, the fact that powering an electric boat through the water comes in at a fraction of the cost of a diesel or petrol engine. If that does not convince you then nothing else will!

charging an electric tender on a superyacht is a problem. When it’s running low you simply head back to the mothership and plug in the cable.

So what is holding things back? Last September we drove an all electric Tesla Model X from the UK through France in time to attend the Monaco Yacht Show. In the UK our run about, town car is a Nissan Leaf so while we hear the arguments such as range and charging infrastructure against electric vehicles we simply do not understand them. Neither range nor

Konrad Bergström the company’s President and Founder comments, “And while the industry has already made fantastic progress when it comes to speed and range, technology is evolving so quickly at the moment, that I predict the coming generation of electric tenders will not only be customisable, but also a lot faster and able to travel even greater distances.”

Oscar Fors the COO of X Shore believes the next big thing is super-charging up to 150 kW, similar to speeds available for advanced cars today. This will allow boats to charge in something like 30 minutes. “Today, most boats have onboard chargers that convert the AC-power from a regular 3-phase outlet to DC-power for the battery. Super-charging, or DC-DC charging, can remove the bottleneck of the onboard charger and charge the boat at a speed that is five times faster, if not more,” he says.

Joakim Hildén the CEO of Q-Yachts in Finland believes improved manoeuvrability and ease of use with the help of modern technology similar to implementations already seen in other fields is the next big thing for electric tenders. He continues, “The car industry has shown us the way with Intelligent Driving Assistance now it is up to the electric boatbuilder to be just as creative when it comes to waypoint following and joy-stick self-docking capabilities.” Not everyone has taken the all electric pill. Florian Helmberger, is Head of Sales at Frauscher. He says, “Contrary to some we don’t believe in huge jumps in capacity. For bigger boats and yachts as well as commercial vessels Diesel hybrid

the best technology available. One boat at a time we hope to make the electric propulsion the way for the future.” Paul Lavoie is the Co-Founder, CEO and brand visionary behind the Beau Lake Team. They build and hand-finish, electricpowered boats with a vintage luxury look about them. With part of all profits going towards providing clean water in developing countries they are also keen on cleaning up shorelines at home. It is Lavoie’s belief that design is always driven by aesthetics

and performance. He says, “We won’t compromise that to deliver the engine power and travel range our customers want.” As power and range are increased in an electric boat, bigger batteries are needed. And space and weight in a vessel is always at a premium. It’s a design challenge in any category. But for electric boats the effort delivers bigger rewards. Electric boats are able to convert 95% of its battery capacity to shaft power versus combustion craft at only 20%. The Beau Lake Tahoe 14’ electric is fitted with a Torqeedo motor and batteries. The size-to-output ratio is highly efficient. The world wants now a solid state lithium product. But that is about 4-5 years away. In the interim, the scientists at MIT are working on ways to come up with a different answer. Until then, in the consumer

watercraft world, Lithium batteries as we know them will continue to propel us. The good news is that the battery capacity to deliver the travel range boaters want, increases every year. And as result, the price per kilowatt is also decreasing. Tjasa Luin Peric is the CEO of Alfastreet Marine who have gained a strong foothold in the electric tender market with their 28 Cabin or 28 Open model. Based in Slovenija, they specialise in electric propulsion and offer a varied selection of electric engines and battery packages to assure the best performance on the water. Customers can choose between high and low-speed electric engines, as well as offering the semi-hybrid option for unlimited cruising. The largest of batteries is 50 kWh and offers cruising up to 10 hours, depending on the vessel speed and exterior conditions. Peric says, “It is always important to understand the usage and needs of the owner to put together

the right electric combination, due to this reason the first approach towards clients is always collection of the information. In the nautical industry we have the same problem as the automotive industry where everybody is looking for the range, but unfortunately today the market can’t offer any better solutions and it seems that we will have to wait for another couple of years to offer a better combination between the speed and range. At the moment this is the most challenging thing in the world.” The most challenging aspect for electric boat building for Stephen van den Berg the President and Founder of Ribbon Yachts in the Netherlands was design and weight. He says, “The shared challenge has been finding the magical tipping point where we achieve the most efficient engineering solutions and the best styling solutions without any compromises.” He adds, “For the weight challenge we made the Ribbon

A advantage of no smell, no vibration, no fire hazard created by fuels is a huge plus. The total noise free experience is really unique and an eye opener. Compare it to you driving an electrical car, and I am sure you will agree it’s a totally new experience.” He adds, “Certainly it offers more design options and with an open floor plan you can adapt a tender for different purposes; be it the transport of goods, a water taxi configuration or even enclosed limousine with a solar panelled rooftop to be able to charge the batteries. Our focus at Domani will always be on a more zen, onboard experience at reasonable speeds and opting for maximum efficiency, zero emission and a good feeling of being in harmony with the surroundings and environment.”

The move away from fossil fuels began long before the ongoing world instability and volatility in the oil market. The mainstream accepts electric vehicles today to an extent it did not have even a few of years ago. That acceptance has driven decisions by car manufactures, including the world’s largest: VW, to convert to electric. This is echoed in the boating world by the increasing number of players entering the electric category. All this activity and success continue to raise awareness, acceptance and appeal of the electric powered boat. The future is fully-electric and sustainable, and from the evidence before us today it would seem that this future is just around the corner.

HI-TECH HORSE POWER Petrol, diesel or electric? The outboard engineers continue to push the boundaries to deliver more powerful, lighter and more efficient engines

T

he past two years have seen a massive resurgence in the desire to strap a couple of outboard beasts on to the back of a powerboat. The USA has seen the greatest growth along with recreational boating, and much like their love for ‘muscle cars’, the bigger, louder and flashier – the better. Can you guess the largest market for SEVEN Marine and their 627SV engine? The other producers of outboard engines are all seeing growth and there are even new kids on the block. After an element of consolidation, we now have the main five petrol outboard manufacturers and they all deliver a diverse range with regular updates in tech and design. However, our new kids (or not so new) are concentrating on different fuel. Diesel outboard manufacturers mainly aiming at the military and more commercial markets such as the superyacht industry are ploughing millions in to RnD and leaning on the expertise from engineers originally working in the automotive sector. For the superyacht sector, weight and power are the two crucial elements with the added benefits of no extra fuel storage required. The major players are hitting the market heavy and let’s face it, if they stand up to the rigours of elite military use, then our delicate owners will surely love them – just keep the noise and smell to a minimum and with the limited maintenance you’re on to a winner. Lastly, we’re starting to see more powerful electric outboards hit the market, but as with their inboard cousins we’re still waiting to see more about the battery life, footprint on board and re-charge times.

DRIVEN BY ADVENTURE ARKSEN CONTINUE TO LEAD INNOVATION IN THE ADVENTURE SECTOR WITH THE LAUNCH OF THEIR PURPOSE DESIGNED EXPLORER RHIB TO ACCOMPANY THEIR 20-30M EXPLORER VESSELS

A

s more yachting adventurers seek out new destinations for remote exploration and experiences, explorer yachts and support vessels providing a platform for the tools to make this happen have increased in popularity. Tenders and ‘daughter vessels’ that offer the genuine capability to connect their owners to the environment, are in high demand. Since launching their range of Explorer Series 20-30 metre expedition vessels in January 2019, British technology and adventure company, Arksen, has become a strong force in the marine industry and continue to drive market change. The latest design is their flagship model in the new Adventure Series, the 13.35m metre Arksen 45, another unique and exceptional offering.

Arksen, founded by Jasper Smith, is built on three key elements, the Arksen vessels, the Arksen Foundation and the Arksen Explorers’ Club. The new Arksen 45 is built to be multi-functional, able to support leisure, research and commercial voyages by operating either as a tender/chase boat, or for independent adventurous excursions. Each boat is purpose-built to be functional and versatile. Once again, Arksen delved deep into the minds and intentions of owners, to design a product based on modern day wants and needs. Whilst retaining elements of luxury, the vessel combines explorer styling, rugged construction, generous interior and exterior space and large load carrying capacity with long range, high speed capability and exceptional seakeeping.

This is a boat designed to go further, for longer, and with greater capacity for toys and equipment to entertain even the most adventurous owner or guest. The Arksen Adventure Series are built in collaboration with renowned British powerboat and RIB specialists, Ring Powercraft. The Arksen 45 is based on their proven hull design, which is currently used in the defence and commercial sectors. A company with a racing heritage formed over five decades, their hull designs have proven themselves capable of handling even the most hostile and challenging of seas. Commenting on their design, Ring Powercraft’s CEO, David Jackson, said: “Ring’s proven hull designs, which have evolved throughout the brand’s 51-year history, combine high-speed capability with fuel efficiency, soft riding and exceptional rough water handling.” With fuel capacity delivering a range of up to 500 miles and a hull capable of sprint speeds over 50 knots, the Arksen 45 is available with a range of propulsion options to suit different users including outboards, stern drive and water jet propulsion systems, with petrol, diesel or hybrid power plants. The lightness of the structure, accredited to the extensive use of Honeycomb panels, combined with a fine entry ensures fuel economy is also a considerable advantage. The vessel is capable of multi-day independent adventures enabling owners and their guests to spend longer in their ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 41

chosen destinations, operating autonomously to the mothership. It can provide a safe and comfortable ride in some of the world’s more challenging locations and the separate forward cabin and full height shower room allow guests to freshen up in privacy after a dive or day at the beach. The large aft deck space, with adjustable track securing system and spacious storage above the pilot-house provides the ability to carry a significant amount of equipment. Modular configuration allows change of function, from leisure and relaxation to diving and watersports, to transfer of dive gear, kayaks or surfboards, motorcycles, research equipment and so on. It can be as amenable and flexible as your imagination! Matching the practicalities and features required for both polar and tropical adventuring, whilst remaining functional for the more well-trodden routes is a tough line to tread, but the Arksen team thrive on a technical challenge and have certainly succeeded with the ARKSEN 45 RIB.

Arksen has grown from a desire to challenge many of the old assumptions still prevalent in the marine industry; to move towards experiential ownership, combining boat ownership with epic adventures, science and philanthropy. Through the Arksen Foundation, Arksen has partnered with the newly launched ‘Yachts for Science’ platform, which links vessels and their owners with scientists and research projects, increasing worldwide capacity for vital marine research. Their ethos is to inspire everyone to find the true explorer within themselves by providing the tools and platforms to realise those dream adventures. Arksen endeavour to enable people to truly connect with the environment and achieve new experiences they never thought possible. It is the desire to unlock this potential which runs throughout both their Explorer and Adventure series. This belief comes from within. Arksen Founder Jasper is described by many as passionate, humble and genuine, the same credentials that run through the core of the company. He saw an opportunity in applying technology and new innovations to the superyacht industry to benefit ocean research and maximise the enjoyment of being onboard. Speaking at a superyacht event last year, Jasper described why he launched Arksen, “Our mission is to inspire a new generation of explorer, sailor, adventurer and scientist; motivating them to go further, for longer and in support of projects that empower global audiences to better understand, protect and nurture the world’s oceans. “The new Arksen 45 vessel has been designed from the ground up as the very best tool for marine adventure and one that could be used for leisure, research or commercial purposes.” For those owners and crews who are new to exploring higher latitudes, Arksen are also offering supported rallies starting in early 2022 which take in a number of routes, while offering once in a lifetime experiences at each location. CENTRE STAGE Driven by the desire to deliver flexible solutions to enhance the use of the yacht’s aft decks, the Nautibuoy team have created a balance between innovation and safety

T

he Nautibuoy platforms are now into their sixth year of production and sales after having won the prestigious DAME award in the Deck category back in 2015. Business has moved on at a fair pace over the past six years, with Nautibuoy bringing more ideas through from conception to build and market launch. They have 18 patents pending, 36 registered designs and 24 pending designs. Nina and Clay are from the crew side of the business so know the general day to day issues crew are faced with. The Nautibuoy products are all developed with this in mind – to make the yacht crew’s life easier and to bring more practicable solutions to the yacht’s operation. It all started with a single platform; designed to extend the aft area of the yacht to give the guests and owners a larger area to relax or to tie the toys and jetskis to. That one simple idea seems a long time ago now as the range of Nautibuoy platforms has grown year on year.

90 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

But it’s not just about patents and designs, there is also the important safety angle that the team take seriously.

platforms rather than one large custom platform also means they can be easily stowed.

The whole system is modular and very versatile. The unique Air Toggle connection system allows multiple platforms and docks to be connected in any number of configurations, depending on the requirements and water activities on any given day. The stability is produced by the four ballast bags on each platform with a unique patent pending quick and easy dump mechanism, which eases the recovery for crew members.

BUILD QUALITY Another important and practical element of the sturdy platforms is that they have no hard angles or cleats sticking out that could cause damage when being set-up or recovered. The anchor loops are made out of durable Dyneema (the world’s strongest fibre) with the stainless D-Rings on each corner reinforced with Kevlar. NautiBuoy mention this is actually over spec’d, but this means the connections can easily take the weight of jetskis and smaller tenders with complete confidence. The platforms can be anchored off beaches for guests to relax on and use as a base to snorkel from. Plus, they can also be towed, with the ballast bags emptied or in the upright position from one location to another.

The Air toggle means that there is a safe, entrapment free connection between the multiple platforms, free of any hard parts where you might stub a toe or attachments that might require polishing. Being modular the set-up and design of the platforms can be altered dependent on the guests’ needs on any given day, this flexibility in configuration is key, and when you create the jetski dock or attach the C-Docks for the seabobs. This extended adaptability is priceless. Having a number of the smaller

TEAK DECKS This is one of the product’s main selling points. The PE foam surface gives the appearance of real teak, which means

ADVERTORIAL

that the platforms are not just functional, they are a practical and stylish addition to the yacht when used as a beach deck extension. The other benefit that with a unique and fitted protection cover, the platforms can be used by crew as a maintenance or detailing platform in the water. But they’re not just pretty – they’re tough as well. NautiBuoy’s exclusive and extensively researched process of bonding the PE foam to the platforms ensures that there is no delamination and no bubbling in the heat. The foam is glued and stitched to prevent any peeling, even with repetitive knocking from watersports equipment. The platforms were tested in large ovens at 60 degree centigrade for six hour periods. As well as the PE foam being UV resistant, the foam remained at a comfortable temperature and did not absorb the heat, making them still usable even in the hottest of tropical climates. Initially, the platforms were presented to the market as a single flat bed extension to the after section of any yacht. Over the past few years after many discussions with captains and owners, the offering has lead to multiple additions. The platforms come in four sizes now and can all be interlinked, thus giving the users the ability to create any shape or size of extension that they wish. There are many additions for specific toys such as the C-Dock for seabobs, fliteboards, jetskis and even amphibious aircraft.

They have had a very positive impact on our ability to conduct water sports and general maintenance. Captain Frazer, M/Y Gene Machine The possibilities are endless, however, upon talking to Nina and Clay we find out it’s not all about developing new elements for the Nautibuoy range. “Of course safety and manufacturing processes are also very important to us,” Nina explains. “They say Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we go further than any other manufacturer in our space. After actually working on the yachts themselves, we know how important it is to have the very best in terms of durability and to concentrate on the minutiae. This simply delivers an A1product and that’s what we do at Nautibuoy. It has been a lot of work, but gaining Global ISO Safety Recognition was important to us. We’re not just talking about Europe, we comply to EVERY ISO regulation across the world. The platforms go through rigorous testing procedures and

have the second air chamber for safety, which is provided by the air toggle. After all the Nautibuoy platforms are used in every continent in the world.” INNOVATIONS The latest product launched in Dusseldorf 2020, was a special clamp fitted on to the side of a platform to hold an umbrella or sunshade. This innovation, once again extends the use of the basic platform. With the comfort seats already available as a popular accessory, the platforms can be used as a relaxation area, and an area for parents to sit in comfort and watch the children play in the water. But what about the blistering sun? Enter the latest improvement from the Nautibuoy Lab. The solid and durable umbrella holder. This device simply clips on to the outer edge of any platform, giving the ability to place a sunshade pole into a secure holder. Easily fastened, this accessory enables the platform users to sit and relax in the shade. A simple, but brilliant addition to the growing range platform accessories. To wind up, Nina and Clay warn us to watch out for new product launches later this year… For more details Tel: +44 (0)1364 643 921 or visit www.nautibuoymarine.com

PERFECTLY PACKAGED Is big always better? Josh Richardson looks at how to fill your tender and toys garage when you may be restricted by the design and amount of available storage

T

he media understandably tends to focus on the largest yachts in the world – those such as the spectacular REV expedition yacht in build. However, reviewing the global order book and planned deliveries for 2020 we can see that, whilst the media focus is on large yachts, the fastest growing segment of the market is in the smaller 24m – 45m yachts, with expedition style yachts also enjoying an increased market share. It is this size yacht that represents the largest market share of existing vessels and often introduces new owners to the industry and brands such as Sunseeker, Princess, Azimut-Benetti, the Feretti Group and San Lorenzo, who focus on this size bracket. This market share is now showing the busiest orderbooks with the largest number of current builds. It is this size yacht I would like to concentrate on in this article, as it is a key but often overlooked section of the industry when talking about tenders and toys, and one which invariably challenges us at Superyacht Tenders and Toys more than any other. Yacht garage space Large yachts usually have adequate garages, cranes and stowage for a variety of craft and toys. Generally when dealing with large yachts over 80m there are a number of tender options that can be proposed which are fit for purpose and fit within the space available and the work SYTT do is merely a matter of finding a match for the client in terms of budget, build time and preferred style. It is in the smaller yachts that our work becomes slightly more difficult as space is constrained and the decision is more critical as it has a very direct impact on owners’ living spaces and the way in which they use their yacht. Garage spaces are also designed by the shipyard from the outset of these more production orientated builds with a single preferred tender in mind. More often than not there is very little, if any, flexibility in this space and the shipyard often provides their standard tender as

94 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

part of the build contract. Typically, we see garages that are designed to fit this shipyard-specified tender, often leaving only about 100mm clearance around it so finding an alternative tender can be a challenge but is not impossible! Inboard diesel brands such as Williams and Castoldi have built a strong reputation and following in this market. Williams is popular with the UK yacht builders such as Princess and Sunseeker and Castoldi is favoured by their Italian counterparts but owners do not have to stick with the tender their yacht builder specifies. Focus on toys In the last 10-20 years the tender and toy package has become something that is a key decision for owners when choosing yachts, with many believing that the best moments in life are on or in the water playing with the toys. This has inevitably led to the increase in expedition style yachts and support vessels to whom we are providing consultation and supplying tenders and toys. With space being the priority and the challenge there are a number of innovations in the toy market to make life easier with limited storage space. Options such as inflatable toys, SUPS and docks which have a reduced stowed size create a better owner experience. Multi-functional toys are improving in quality so as to offer different sports within one item – for example, different fins, foils, rigs and sails can be purchased to utilise one board in a number of ways which all helps reduce the amount of storage space needed onboard.

The new owners Yacht charterers always seem to want to be able to have anything, anytime, anywhere. However, this simply cannot be achieved by smaller yachts as they do not have the space to carry everything all the time. Tender and particularly toy rental has helped fill this area and at SYTT we have a significant selection of rental toys and tenders available that can often be delivered the same day to many of the main yachting destinations. This has also given owners the opportunity to try before you buy, something that has been lacking in the superyacht toy supply traditionally. With many toys being of high value, this is a great opportunity for owners and crew to decide what they like before purchasing rather than buying new and then it sitting idle in the garage for years because the owner doesn’t like it or the crew find it too difficult/time consuming to deploy. It also means they can have the latest and greatest toy at any time ensuring that owners have the newest, fastest, lightest and most reliable equipment on board. Reliability, of course, is key to both owners and crew alike. A lot of the new electric toys such as Seabob, Lift eFoil, Radinn and others offer a zero-maintenance toy which offers a quick thrill but requires very low skill. The perfect addition for charters and family trips!

Options such as inflatable toys, SUPS and docks which have a reduced stowed size create a better owner experience. The must have toys package for smaller yachts: Inflatable SUPS These are now regarded by many as a better option than their rigid predecessors. With companies such as RED Paddle Co offering their new compact SUPs these pack down into less than half the space of competitors. RED also offer a 10’7 Wind Windsurf Paddleboard Package, which means you can also use one board to paddle on or windsurf. For beginners this provides a great multi-use toy. As a personal recommendation if a yacht is after a SUP then I would recommend a larger size, up to an 11’0 or larger so that the board has some length to it which means you can paddle further plus also put a child on the front. This also means the board is more seaworthy and are better able to maintain some speed through waves. Nautibuoy docks These transform watersports and interaction with the sea plus also look very sleek with their EVA foam teak top that has a much more premium feel than the cheaper alternatives. The docks offer a multitude of uses – they can be used for lounging with the leisure pack, cleaning the hull with the maintenance pack, and can be configured in a variety of ways to create jetski docks, tender berthing or even eFoil and Seabob berthing with the C-Dock. A great way to increase your waterfront real estate. Small PWCs PWCs have grown over the years and the largest Seadoo GTX 300 is now 3.45m long and weighs 385kg plus fuel. That is larger than some tenders in the smaller yachts! With this in mind the Seadoo SPARK and Seadoo TRIXX are popular. The Spark weighs 186kg plus fuel and is a much easier to store size of 2.79m. These skis are a lot of fun and are a lot more responsive and nimbler than the larger more powerful skis.

Inflatable Sailing Dinghies Sailing dinghies offer a great way for guests to enjoy yachting and often are large enough that multiple people can sail together. MiniCat is a class leader and one of the most popular inflatable catamarans in the market being known as the world’s favourite portable sailboat. There are 4 sizes and 9 models available for 1-4 people to sail. All models fit in 1-3 bags and take less than 30 minutes to assemble. The 420 Evoque is the most popular at SYTT and has various components in carbon and comes with fully battened mainsail, Jib and optional Gennaker. This is great for 2 adults and a child or can be sailed solo. Often crew will take kids out sailing and can be in the same boat training. Other popular dinghies that are easy to stow include the Tiwal, a single or two handed monohull dinghy and the Reverso, a singlehanded dinghy that has a rigid hull that separates into 4 sections for transport and storage. This only takes 5 minutes to rig and gives the best sailing experience of all options above. The Reverso can be customised to match the yacht. Folding bikes They provide a great option when ashore to explore. Montague bikes provide a range of mountain and pavement bikes. The company markets itself as ‘real bikes that fold’ and the Paratrooper Elite is a very popular yacht choice being the highest performance folding mountain bike in the world, with an aggressive hard tail build for technical single track. For folding ebikes few do it better than GoCycle. These have been the industry leader for a number of years and are lightweight and easy to handle weighing only 16.5kg. The bikes are very adjustable so can fit all size riders. The new fast folding GX model is ideal for yachts whether it is crew going to the shops or owners and guests cruising the local area. SYTT offer clients a full CAD modelling service to help arrange stowage and maximise the equipment to be carried. Utilising space efficiently and planning for places to charge electric toys is key. One area that is often overlooked is that tenders often have a lot of storage and a number of watersports toys can be stored in them, or under them in the chocks. In the past we have got involved in custom storage bags for inflatables and other toys which means they can be stored in open outside guest areas. Lack of storage space should not be an excuse not to have all the toys! For more details Tel: +44 (0)2380 016363 or visit www.superyachttendersandtoys.com

GET SURF’E E-Boards are taking the watersports world by storm. ONBOARD talks to Wayne Brooks about what to look for when buying a new board

W

ayne Brooks, founder of Jet Board Limited, former surfer and water lover, and known in the industry for his seemingly endless collection of jetboards, bought his first board in 2008. It was one of the very first invented: big, heavy and clumsy. He has come a long way since then, always with a smile after a session on one of his many boards. But that hasn’t always been the case. Often, Wayne would receive a new board only to find out the promised specs are not reality, or that the board isn’t actually saltwater proof, or to discover it is malfunctioning after one ride. Many a time he has come out of the water feeling great only to discover the board will not charge, or the battery is unsafe. Today, having mastered the art of choosing jetboards and matching people with their perfect board, he advises that before buying a board you ask yourself what you want out of your board. Most electric boards average at a 25-minute ride time, continuous full throttle with an 85kg rider on top. This is a good industry standard, and something you should be expecting, but remember that when you mix up the speeds the ride time increases. You also need to know where you are going to store your board. It is not recommended to leave it outside on the deck where salty winds and water can get to it. It’s also not recommended to store your battery fully charged, so consider a board that charges quickly. It is a common myth that buying directly from the manufacturer is beneficial, but this is far from the truth. While the price remains equal, factories are specialised in manufacturing, while dealers focus on customer service and after-care. Look for the latter; these boards can break, and you will be thankful to have the back-up service. Wayne also recommends caution with online shops: “Would you buy a boat from someone who has never been on one? Same goes for jetboards.” Look for dealers who offer a try-before-you-buy deal with multiple brands, and can give you honest and unbiased advice. Remember that when top speed and max riding time is mentioned online, it is usually measured without a rider, so when you add an 85kg weight on top these specs decrease.

98 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

Remember warranty! Dealers who also have service centres will be able to best help you should something go wrong with the board in the middle of summer. You do not want to be missing out on a whole season because the online shop you bought from doesn’t stock an impeller, or because the factory is at such over-capacity it cannot handle the warranty cases. Wayne has concluded after all these years that the best boards are modular ones. Rather than shipping boards back and forth, you can simply change the part yourself in a matter of minutes. Look for modular or be sure that you’re buying from a brand with incredible warranty capacities. The industry is still incredibly new, some even say at an early adopters stage, so as for the future we are still waiting to see the big players like Yamaha, or Seadoo enter the market, before this can happen though we still need to see the industry grow massively. This also takes us to consolidation, right now it’s an industry where players enter and drop out at fast rates. Battery capacity and safety is still a big issue. Right now everyone is using li-ion, but as soon as a battery with a lighter ion, and larger capacity that is affordable comes out, we should see some great improvements in the jetboard industry in terms of weight, ride time and performance.

JETBOARD LTD The EWave electric board is user friendly, eco-friendly, and reliable. The board even has a training tube to help beginners. It took 14 prototype designs and five years to develop the EWave hull. It is a perfect new watersports experience for the yachting industry. There are also many accessories available, or in development, that will enhance the EWave experience. Most importantly, EWave is the worlds’ first dual-propulsion board. There is a Foil attachment that easily replaces the jet-pump and converts the jet board into a foil board. For practicality, there are wheels that attach into the FCS Fin boxes and makes it easy to roll around and stored upright, it takes up very little space in the tender garage. www.jetboardlimited.com

BE MY BUDDY FOR THE NOVICE OR EXPERIENCED DIVER, ENTERING THE DEEP BLUE IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. SUPERYACHTS ARE THE PERFECT PLATFORM TO DISCOVER THIS ACTIVITY, BUT SAFETY AND GOOD EQUIPMENT IS ALWAYS PARAMOUNT. MAKE SURE YOUR CREW AND GUESTS ARE PROPERLY TRAINEDÂ

S

cuba diving provides a truly unique and unforgettable experience for you and your family, friends and guests. It is the only leisure activity that combines tranquillity, adrenalin, exercise and relaxation. You experience what it feels like to be weightless, witness intoxicating colours and delve into the underwater world; one containing a breath-taking variety of species such as dolphins, turtles and fish as well as historical wrecks. Scuba diving is a great activity for any one over the age of 10. Regardless of age, sex, sporting ability, social skills and intelligence, anyone can be a great diver and it’s a great activity for all the family to enjoy at the same time.

with a dive centre where the PADI open water course can be completed in as little as four days. To save on valuable holiday time many students opt to do the Open Water referral, where they can complete the theory and pool training before they depart which just leaves the four completion dives once you arrive on the yacht. GETTING GEARED UP Each scuba diver should have a good fitting wetsuit, BCD (buoyancy control device), fins, mask and snorkel, fins, wetsuit and regulators. Many yachts carry a range of sizes for all ages. Depending on the time of year you are diving you might like a range of wetsuit thicknesses or even drysuits to ensure that all the divers keep warm.

To get your yacht equipped to offer scuba diving safely is relatively simple but there are some basic health and safety necessities that you should consider. So we have teamed up with Oyster Diving, the UK’s premier PADI scuba diving and travel centre to offer you this advice.

Remember your scuba kit is a life-support system so keep your equipment serviced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions which for most brands is every 12 months or 100 dives whichever comes sooner.

PROPER TRAINING Scuba diving is regarded as a very safe sport, but without the proper training by a professional instructor, you could leave your self vulnerable. Plus, it’s likely that you won’t be covered by your insurance if an accident does occur.

Scuba cylinders can either be hired from a local dive centre but it is often easier and less restrictive to have your own. Cylinders will need to be hydrostatically tested, the time frame for doing this is dictated by local law, but Oyster Diving recommends getting them tested every 12 months.

Many yachts have a full-time instructor on board to train guests and keep an eye on them before they jump in and while underwater. If you don’t have an instructor then just tie up

To fill your cylinders you will need a compressor that can fill your tanks with filtered breathing air. There are many sizes and shapes of compressors available depending on how fast ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 103

you want to be able to fill your tanks, how much room you have to house it in the tenders & toys garage. The most important thing to remember is that your compressor needs to be installed by a professional technician. Oyster Diving work with the same team that look after and maintain the compressor for the Royal Navy amongst many other high-profile customers and they are able to meet any boat around the world. The air from the compressor should be tested every three months to ensure that there are no impurities such as carbon monoxide and oil residue. TIME TO GET WRECKED Once you have your equipment and are trained to use it, then it’s time to jump into the water. These are Oyster’s top dive sites for the Mediterranean. Malta together with its sister islands of Gozo and Comino have many fascinating wrecks, some from the second world war and others sunk on purpose to act as artificial reefs. They can be found at various depths so suitable for all divers. However our favourite is the Um el Faroud, a 110m Libyan oil tanker that suffered a huge explosion, it couldn’t affordably be repaired so in 1998 was scuttled and lies at a maximum depth of 34m. The Azores are for those who crave adrenalin with their diving. Various species of sharks including blues, makos and even hammerheads make this a true gem. Other large pelagics such as humpback whales, sunfish and turtles can all be found here. The Dalmatian coast off Croatia is rapidly becoming a hotspot for divers. With crystal clear water it has a vast array of fish species, nudibranchs and sea horses. Clinging to the underwater limestone cliffs are sponges and caves smothered in colourful soft corals.

In Cyprus, the 178m wreck of the Zenobia which sank in 1980, is one of the world’s most famous diveable wrecks. This large ship is suitable for all experience levels and you can impress your friends by having a selfie sitting in the cab of one of its cars or trucks that are still in its hold. For more advanced divers there is the engine room to explore! Illes Mede islands in Spain was the first marine reserve in Europe, home to large groupers, schools of barracudas and eagle rays. If you go at the right time of year (late spring) you may even find a large sunfish or two. Kas, Turkey is still in its infancy. It has rich marine life and clear blue, warm waters. A variety of dive sites include drop offs, caves and wrecks. There is a good chance of spotting moray eels, hawksbill turtles, octopus and amberjacks. Other favourites include; Island of Chios, Greece, Portofino, Italy with its national marine park and of course the Cote d’Azur. But wherever you are cruising, use professional equipment and get trained. For more information on any of the above then please get in touch with Oyster Diving. hen you are thinking about stocking up the toy cupboard on board, don’t forget about the fun your guests and owners could have on dry land. There are plenty of adrenalin filled vehicles for those of all ages to enjoy when anchored near the coast whether you’re looking for some transport into the nearest village or a speed fest on a deserted beach. One of the most common speed machines on board is the faithful motorbike. Whether it’s the boss’s favourite Harley or a pair of dirt bikes, there’s no shortage of choice. Our current pick is the three wheeled Can-Am Spyder. With 115hp and 130Nmoftorque, this muscley beast is tremendous fun. With an intuitive twist-and-go transmission with no gear shifting it’s easy to use while you’re zipping around those romantic coastal roads. But if you’re looking to be a little more ‘eco-friendly’, there is a massive range of cool looking electric bikes available. Our current dream machine is the Klak Or from Cake. Looks like a throw back to the hairy days of speed way, if you’re old enough to remember that, but great for zipping around town or taking on an adventure on the back country. 106 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

If you’re looking for a little more ‘off-road’ fun, then head over to the wide selection of ATVs and beach buggies. There’s a wide range to choose dependent on experience and terrain, but the team here have their eyes on the Sand Sniper dune buggy from BMS. For the youngsters (and adults), the electric scooter market is hot property right now. Easy to store, easy to use and reasonably (mostly) priced, this is the perfect addition to any on board toy cupboard. Of course, with the ever increasing global participation in cycling, what charter guest wouldn’t love the idea of peddling along the coastal areas of the stunning Mediterranean? And even if the kids are moaning, just chuck an electric bicycle at them and that should keep them quiet. Last but not least, for the real adrenaline junkies out there, we’ve got ‘Land Sailing’. It basically consists of a three wheeled go kart frame with a sail strapped on and all you need is a decent amount of beach and a little wind.

The Legend RIVA Super Florida L

aunched in 1959, Nounours (Teddy Bear), was a Riva Super Florida hull No 341. Film director and Brigitte Bardot’s former husband, Roger Vadim, purchased the Riva and gifted it to to Brigitte Bardot for her to keep at her St Tropez villa ‘La Madrague’, and would soon become a familiar sight, in the old harbour of St Tropez. The Florida, built from 1953 until the late 1960s, is the most successful of the mahogany Riva single-engine runabouts. In the late 1960s, Nounours 110 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

was sold to a chef at the restaurant at the Port Grimaud Marina. Some 20 years later, it was offered for sale at an auction held at Napoleon’s Chateau de Fontainebleau, where it was acquired by a young Swiss-born Monaco resident and passionate Bardot fan. In 2005, the boat was sold again and subsequently completely restored, including a Mercruiser V-8 engine by Riva specialists at Sportmer in 2007. The craft was last sold at auction by RM Sotheby’s auction in Lake Como, Italy for €146,250.
