INTRODUCTION TO BIM PROJECT NAME:MR. RITUL PATEL RESIDENCE GUIDED BY: Prof. Jyoti Trivedi

Introduction • BIM or Building Information Modelling is a tool for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle. • One of the key outputs of this process is the Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset. This model draws on information assembled collaboratively and updated at key stages of a project. Creating a digital Building Information Model enables those who interact with the building to optimize their actions, resulting in a greater whole life value for the asset. • BIM brings together all of the information about every component of a building, in one place. BIM makes it possible for anyone to access that information for any purpose, e.g. to integrate different aspects of the design more effectively. In this way, the risk of mistakes or discrepancies is reduced, and abortive costs minimized. • BIM data can be used to illustrate the entire building life-cycle, from cradle to cradle, from inception and design to demolition and materials reuse. Spaces, systems, products and sequences can be shown in relative scale to each other and, in turn, relative to the entire project. • And by signaling conflict detection BIM prevents errors creeping in at the various stages of development/ construction.

LOD vs. LOS • For creating the Level of Development vs. Level of Schedule for your complete project all the drawings are studied in detail, ranked as per LOD specification on the basis of information given about each activity. • Here, the important point is to integrate the detail and the order in which the element will be constructed, thus the need to link LOD and LOS.

• This will enable us in creating the BIM constructability model.

Revit Modelling • To prepare the Revit model, the following were needed: 1.

LOD vs LOS

2.

MSP schedule

• In the Revit model, the elements were made in the same order as their LOS – only by doing this can the Revit model represent actual construction conditions and not merely be a 3D representation.

• Also, the foundation was not modelled.

Project Scope w.r.t BIM

1 Modelling architectural and structural dwgs and info into Revit model.

2 Quantity Takeoff and comparison of quantities and variations

3 Iterations for different materials to find the most economical option

4 Clash detection

5 4D stimulation

BIM Model STEPS:       

Select the architectural template and Making the grid lines . Importing the CAD file, choose level 1 for ground floor. Using wall command, draw the walls and column using column command. After that Select 3d view . Repeating the same procedure for first floor. Same way Door and windows can also be added to each floor. Thus, final output is obtained

CLASH DETECTION

Open Navisworks manage 2018 and then go to append on the home panel and click on Merge

When you click on Merge, select the Revit models – the basic bungalow and the structure model and click on open.

Then click on selection tree on the select and search tab.

Right click on Ground floor model and from the list click on unit and transform.

Now, click on clash detective

A pop up will open, click on add test

• Name the test as “final clash” • Go on to select both the Revit models in section A and B.

• Click on run test. • The following is the clash detection.

• Then go to report tab

• Then click on write report.

4D SIMULATION

In shared parameters, create group parameter called 4D simulation

Browse for shared parameter file in computer

Then click OK

After being done with the shared parameters, we need to link the MSP and the rivet model. So first, in MSP we add a new column as ID and in Revit select all walls on GF and in the construction head write the ID no.

Then, go to project parameters and in the pop up ‘project properties click on shared parameter, in the categories panel select all categories except areas, views and rooms.

Once the id no. have been linked, we add the MSP schedule. Go to time liner tab, in data sources click on Add Task and add the MSP file

Go to item tools, and click on sets, and click on ‘find items’. Now we select the element and enter the sequence of that element as per MSP.

The option will be asked to choose data source

Go to the sets and then click manage sets.

Select the element to be constructed in 4D simulation and select ‘Construction’ in task type

Go to Simulation Tab Click on Settings Checks the settings – interval size, Playback Duration, Start and End Date. choose ‘Planned’ as view option. Then, play the Simulation Video

Key Learnings • There was a huge scope of things to be achieved which was a task indeed ,but achievable with efficient groupwork. • Modelling errors tend to happen as it was our first hand at all of these software , which are tough to correct later on .Thus, it is best to organize data pre modelling and then start with modelling process. • It was evident from the quantity take off that are certain variation in the quantities but it was difficult to comprehend the reasons behind the variations from the Revit model. • Major of our clashes indicate modelling errors such as intersection of walls and windows, column and beams, slab and column, etc. This has affected the quantity derivation which was realized post clash detection. • Scheduling and constructability sequence go hand in hand from start to end. • In case of any design changes during execution can be incorporated with shear ease along with transparent visualization of the minutest details. • With in-depth analysis of the data time and cost overruns can be reduced/avoided.
