Los barriletes, una tradición ancestral Kites, an ancestral tradition

Durante este mes los cielos de Guatemala tienen visitantes especiales: los barriletes gigantes de Santiago y Sumpango Sacatepéquez, los cuales miden hasta 16 metros y vuelan durante el 1 de noviembre, pero usted puede disfrutar de la exposición durante 30 días.
Una tradición
Según cuentan los habitantes, la elaboración de estos cometas dio inicio porque los espíritus malignos rondaban el cementerio para molestar a las almas, por lo que los ancianos decidieron “volar papeles” para que su sonido los ahuyentaran .
Mientras, otra leyenda describe que los barriletes son una manera de comunicarse con aquellos que ya han partido y que en su cola se suelen escribir mensajes que son leídos por dichas almas.
Con el tiempo, la tradición fue creciendo y así se formó el Festival de Sumpango; además, los barriletes se elevan en otras comunidades. Incluso, se ha expuesto nuestra tradición en Estados Unidos y Francia. ¡Guatemala es asombrosa!

During November, the skies of Guatemala have a unique visitor: the giant kites of Santiago and Sumpango Sacatepéquez. Measuring up to 16 meters, they fly on November 1st., but you can enjoy the exhibit for 30 days.
Interestingly, the Ministerial Agreement 139-2022 declared the Manufacturing Technique of the Giant Kites of both municipalities as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
A tradition
According to the townspeople, manufacturing these kites began when evil spirits haunted the cemetery and disturbed the souls. Then the elders decided to “let pieces of paper fly” in the wind to make noise and scare them away.
Another legend describes that the kites are a way of communicating with those who have departed. The tails carry written messages and are read by those souls.
Over time, the tradition grew to form the Sumpango Festival. Kites are flying in other communities. Our tradition has even been displayed in the United States and France. Guatemala is amazing!
