Lot 1 PUT THE KETTLE ON

The first lot into the ring, Put The Kettle On has been no stranger to firsts in her illustrious career on the track: the first mare in history to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the first mare since Analog’s Daughter to win the Arkle Challenge Trophy and the only mare alive to have won an open Grade 1 Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The daughter of Stowaway also numbers victories in Cheltenham’s Grade 2 Schloer Chase on an impressive race record. Still only an eight year old, Put The Kettle On is one of the most exciting broodmare prospects ever to be offered for sale at public auction. The last word should perhaps be left to her regular rider Aidan Coleman, who had this to say following their famous success in the Champion Chase: “If you could bottle what she has I would never have to ride again because I could sell it. I’d be a rich man”.

Lot 2 IMONLYSAYING

An excellent debut by this son of the great Shantou. He showed slight inexperience after the second last but quickly found his way and locked into a battle with the more experienced and talented Way Out. It was a terrific battle and the depth of the pair ensured it was a long gap back to the third. At the line it required the judge to study the result closely before finally confirming a winning margin of a head against this five year old but he had done enough to confirm his enormous promise and his winning days are sure to be many and in top company based on this exceptional debut. He is out of a Presenting own sister to Doctor Harper and represents something which could well be unique at this stage which is the opportunity to secure a proven and talented young son of the late and great Shantou.

He had asserted on the run to the last in any case and had shown his superiority over his rivals and it was run in a time thirteen seconds faster than the average time on the day. By the great Presenting he is from the family of Royal Regatta and Three Musketeers along with the hugely talented Strong Flow.

A debut winner of his maiden at Nenagh this youngster showed all the right signs to suggest there is a lot more to come. He set off in mid division but there was no doubt in Derek O’Connor’s mind that he could apply a change of tactics early in this contest and he soon went to the front. A thoroughly uncomplicated individual he was very professional in front and looked set for clear victory going to the last where he made his first notable error. It is to his credit that he managed to retain balance and momentum and retain the lead all the way to the line when challenged by a very promising runner up. His dam won a seventeen runner bumper for Paul Nolan on what was her final start so can be considered a talented sort and she is also a sister to Cloone River. A very likeable start to this fellow career and a big future undoubtedly awaits.

Lot 5 IORENS

An impressive debut winner of her maiden at Rathcannon on Sunday. There have been few opportunities for mares this season with some fixtures falling by the wayside so it must be assumed that the mares that are turning up to run are doing so in very competitive company indeed. From the bottom of the testing hill in Rathcannon this mare always seemed to have good control of her rivals and whilst they notably quickened to the line this mare had at least one gear too many for her rivals. She is a smart sort who clearly stays but the speed she showed and high cruising speed was notable also which should be no surprise given that her dam was placed on the level. Her page also points to more speed so she should turn out to be a very versatile and classy sort.

Having unseated at the first fence on debut at Farmacaffley this fellow effectively made his debut at Portrush where he ran out a convincing seven length winner from the well touted Gordon Elliott trained favourite Ellis Boyd Redding. Having been ridden off the pace he made his way strongly through the field leaving the back straight to race clear in the closing stages. He showed a lot of speed when called upon and looks a smart sort with a big future. The speed may well be explained by the proximity of some smart sorts on the page such as Sound Man, Master Of The Hall and Samcro. He is one with a big future.

A fine individual who was tucked into a pocket on the turn for home at Dromahane but once a gap appeared behind the leading trio he quickly went to the front at the second last and showed the gears he had available once required. This fellow impressed all judges as a store costing 150,000 and his effort here further confirms his likely future path. He ultimately went away to win by two lengths producing the better jump when the pressure was on showing he has the constitution to compete and deliver in the most testing of circumstances. In a maiden once won by the great Best Mate this son of Court Cave ran out a most convincing winner. The time of this race was an exceptional seventeen seconds faster than average so it is of particular note the power of the final surge from this winner. He stayed on very strongly between the final two fences and continued to widen the gap all the way to the line. It was a very informative effort as it showed he is very much comfortable off a strong pace and also holds the stamina required to contest top class prizes in the future. The acceleration he showed between the final two fences suggests he has the attributes to compete at the very top of the national hunt table. His dam won a bumper from only three outings for Tom Cooper suggesting there is ample talent in the pedigree to afford this fellow a very bright future indeed.

What was admirable is how generously he found reserves once joined and still held a very live chance but for a notable error at the last where he did well to recover as well as he did. He clearly has a high cruising speed as he was travelling strongest on the run to the second last and his resolution for the game is certainly not for question given how he responded once challenged. He is a brother to a black type performer in Baily Cloud and his dam is a sister to Alcapone while he hails from the family of one of the all-time great NH talents in Carvills Hill who, like this fellows damsire, was by Roselier.

Faced two potentially smart rivals when making his debut in a four-year-old maidens’ race at Edgcote in Oxfordshire on Sunday, but prepped by Britain’s champion trainer of pointers, clearly knew his job and duly won in good style. Having been prominent or leading for much of the race, he appeared to be in command when producing a fluent jump at the final fence. One rival fell at that point, hampering the other contender, but they were under pressure at the time and it is hard to believe this horse did not win on merit. A graduate of Goffs’ Land Rover Sale, he has become the first winner for his dam, who herself won a point-to-point and was a half-sister to the smart hurdler/chasers Benrajah and City Heights.

There was only a half-length separating the pair at the line and this fellow lost little in defeat. He raced a little immature and will have learned a lot from this contest as he lost position on the final circuit at a key time in the race but his ability to recover and return to a challenging position speaks volumes for both what he learned on that day and moreover what he is likely to be capable of in the future. This daughter of Malinas finished second on debut at Ballyragget to the exciting Fancy Girl. This was a notable effort as she lost her place at a key point in the race with a couple of errors which can be attributed to inexperience. The way she has managed to move back into the race when plenty were competing at the end of the back straight. She quickened through the field and her jumping improved as the race progressed as she stayed on strongly to the line. The very ethos of pointing is to allow time to educate youngsters for a bright future and this almost happened mid race for this mare. She learned in the early part of the race and even though this left her out of position her raw ability brought her right into the mix in the closing stages. There can be little doubt about her ability based on this early evidence.

A debut winner of her maiden at Loughrea where she fended off a very short priced favourite in the Emmett Mullins trained Time Was. With a steady early gallop speed was key for this contest and this mare was clearly able to utilise her natural speed to win by a narrow margin. She also had to battle to hold off a very determined late challenge and she did this admirably. She has posted a terrific debut effort and is an ideal candidate to maximise the many mares opportunities which the programme now includes.

Look To The West carved out a smart reputation for herself when she recorded an emphatic ten-length victory at Dromahane just last Sunday. The Westerner mare had already caught the eye when her connections elected to pitch her in against geldings at Lingstown for her debut last month, and it was no ordinary maiden that she contested in very testing conditions for her introduction. That was evident by three four-year-old maiden winners already emerging from the race, and Look To The West more acquitted herself in that company. Making much of the running, she was still very much in contention when coming down at the final fence. The tactics remained unchanged on her return to action as she made all at Dromahane, jumping just as well as she had done on debut, to easily come out on top on extensively watered holding ground. Not only did she record such a widemargin success at the same venue that Champion Hurdler Honeysuckle also opened her account, but she did so in the quickest time on the card, 11 seconds quicker than the geldings equivalent.

Encouragingly, when the runner-up tried to close at the last, he picked-up once again to win going away, demonstrating a very likeable winning attitude in the process.
