Le bureau d’architecture Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés célèbre cette année le vingtième anniversaire de sa création. Fondé en 1993 à Lausanne, en Suisse, par Jacques Richter et Ignacio Dahl Rocha, il est le fruit d’une amitié née dix ans auparavant à l’Université de Yale où tous deux réalisaient leurs études postgrades. La direction du bureau est complétée dès le début par Kenneth Ross. Puis, Christian Leibbrandt, rejoint l’équipe peu après. Enfin, en 2007, Fabrizio Giacometti prend la responsabilité de l’équipe Réalisation. Le bureau défend une architecture dans laquelle la pertinence et la beauté d’une œuvre surgissent de son sens technique et fonctionnel, en harmonie avec le contexte historique et culturel. Il propose un modèle de pratique professionnelle qui recherche l’équilibre entre créativité et efficacité, associées à un même

The architecture office of Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. Founded in 1993 in Lausanne, Switzerland, by Jacques Richter and Ignacio Dahl Rocha, it is the fruit borne of a friendship which blossomed ten years previously at Yale University, USA, where the two undertook postgraduate study. The management of the office has been completely led by Kenneth Ross since the beginning. Then, Christian Leibbrandt joined the team shortly afterwards. Finally, in 2007, Fabrizio Giacometti assumed responsibility of the Realisation team. The office supports architecture in which the relevance and the beauty of a piece emerge from its technical and functional meaning, in harmony with the cultural and historical context. It proposes a model of professional practise which searches for a

En 2005, le groupe est complété avec la création de RDR Arquitectos dont le siège se trouve à Buenos Aires, en Argentine. Depuis, cette équipe travaille en étroite collaboration avec le bureau de Lausanne, favorisant ainsi un échange culturel et humain riche, ainsi qu’un transfert de connaissances et de technologies entre les deux pays.

In 2000, the development of activities in the latter field lead to the creation of the sister organisation of RDR Design. In 2005, the group was completed by the creation of RDR Arquitectos, which is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since then, this team has worked in close collaboration with the Lausanne office, thus favouring a rich, human and cultural exchange as well as a transfer of knowledge and technology between the two countries.

3 Le «Swiss Tech Convention Center» fait partie de la nouvelle organisation de l’EPFL, à Lausanne, qui s’achèvera en 2014. Il est composé d’un centre de congrès comprenant une salle modulable, d’un complexe d’habitations pour étudiants, de commerces, d’un parking et d’une nouvelle station de métro.
The “Swiss Tech Convention Center” forms part of the new EPFL organisation in Lausanne, which will be completed in 2014. It consists of a convention centre, comprising a modular room, an accommodation complex for students, businesses, a car park and a new metro station.

Artchitecture L’année 2005 marque le début d’expériences en commun entre les architectes Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés et l’artiste Catherine Bolle. Le fruit de cette collaboration constituait le thème de l’exposition «Artchitecture» qui fit partie des journées «Ecosuiza» organisées par l’Ambassade de Suisse en Argentine dans la « maison urbaine» des Dahl Rocha, à Buenos Aires. L’exposition se déroulait dans trois espaces: le premier dédié à l’œuvre de l’artiste, le deuxième à un diaporama de l’œuvre des architectes, et finalement le troisième espace présentait cinq œuvres réalisées en collaboration avec Catherine Bolle. Ce travail en commun a permis aux architectes de retrouver la finesse d’une sensibilité esthétique que les exigences de la profession peuvent éroder. En définitive, cette expérience les a incités à explorer les limites de l’horizon architectural sans recourir à la voie de l’arbitraire, de la rhétorique ou de l’extravagance. Pour Catherine Bolle, cette aventure lui a donné la possibilité d’approfondir la dimension du travail collectif. Elle lui a donné également l’opportunité de conquérir un nouvel espace public.
Artchitecture The year 2005 marks the beginning of the sharing of experience between architects Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés and the artist Catherine Bolle. The fruit of the collaboration formed the subject of the “Artchitecture” exhibition, which was part of the “Ecosuiza” days organised by the Swiss Embassy in Argentina in Dahl Rocha's “urban house” in Buenos Aires. The exhibition was spread over three spaces: the first dedicated to the œuvre of the artist, the second to a slide show of the architects' work, and finally the third space presented five pieces created in collaboration with Catherine Bolle. This collaborative work allowed the architects to recapture the subtlety of an aesthetic sensitivity that can be eroded by the requirements of the profession. At the end of the day, this experience encouraged them to explore the limits of the architectural horizon without resorting to the arbitrary, to rhetoric or to extravagance. For Catherine Bolle, this adventure has given her the possibility of broadening her scope of collective work. It has also given her the opportunity to conquer a new public space.

Villa La Hilaria, Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 2007 Dans cette autre maison d’été, la simplicité des murs enduits de blanc souligne l’omniprésence des pins maritimes qui l’entourent. La rusticité des planchers en ardoise naturelle, le bois de lapacho au niveau des ouvertures et du mobilier complètent la palette de matériaux. Le programme se développe en forme de «L» et réunit également les fonctions usuelles sur un seul étage. Seule la chambre principale est située à l’étage supérieur. L’expression sculpturale du volume est obtenue par le contraste entre l’impression de vide des espaces publics et le caractère massif des espaces privés. ■

Ce fut une riche expérience qui a permis d’appliquer la philosophie de travail du bureau dans un contexte bien différent notamment en matière de climat et de techniques de construction. Construite dans la station balnéaire de Punta del Este, en Uruguay, la villa Buenos Mares s’inscrit dans la tradition moderne et s’intègre dans son environnement naturel par une austérité formelle. La villa s’identifie à l’aridité du paysage par l’utilisation de murs en pierres locales. Dans cette maison au caractère introverti, la masse de la façade d’accès contraste avec la composition ouverte et perméable ouverte sur la mer.

Villa Buenos Mares, José Ignacio, Rocha, Uruguay, 2009 With the RDR Arquitectos team in Buenos Aires, the office had the opportunity to tackle the topic of individual housing, which up to now has been little broached in Switzerland. This was a rich experience which permitted the application of the office's working philosophy within a different context, notably on the subject of climate and construction techniques. Constructed on the coastal resort of Punta del Este, in Uruguay, the villa Buenos Mares falls within the realms of modern tradition and is integrated into its natural environment through its formal austerity. The villa identifies with the arid landscape through its use of walls made from local stones. In this introverted house, the weight of the entrance façade contrasts with the open and permeable arrangement opening on to the sea.
