Une gare de télécabine, c’est grand, c’est froid, c’est bruyant: le royaume des courants d’air. En faire un hôtel chaleureux, accueillant et doté du plus beau panorama dont on puisse rêver, c’est la gageure qu’Actescollectifs Architectes et l’entreprise SD Construction ont tenue à Crans-Montana.

Au départ, une gare d’arrivée d’une télécabine désaffectée à 2100 mètres d’altitude, équipée d’un restaurant. Dans un premier temps, le propriétaire transforme le restaurant en un établissement de haut de gamme, puis il décide de compléter l’équipement en créant un hôtel d’une quinzaine de chambres.

Les démarches administratives sont longues puisque seule la volumétrie existante a permis à la commune de Lens d’accorder le changement d’affectation : élever un édifice neuf à cet endroit n’aurait pas été autorisé. Techniquement ensuite, il a fallu rendre le bâtiment étanche avant de pouvoir y travailler en hiver. Sans compter le problème de logistique puisque les accès sont réduits à leur plus simple expression.

Véhicules tout-terrain en été. En hiver, les hôtes du restaurant et de l’hôtel qui vient de s’ouvrir sont « condamnés » aux skis, à une marche à pied de quinze minutes depuis la télécabine de Cry d’Er ou aux chenillettes affrétées par l’hôtel.

Cabane, mais de luxe La transformation respecte la répartition des espaces et exploite au mieux les volumes existants. Sur la partie est, seize chambres et, sur la partie centrale, le lobby et la réception de l'hôtel. Sur la partie nord, une extension a permis l'implantation de nouveaux sanitaires pour le restaurant et l'hôtel ainsi qu'une salle de conférence et un espace wellness comprenant hammam et sauna. Sur le toit, une piscine s'implante au milieu du panorama alpin. L'espace de l'ancienne gare de télécabine respecte le caractère du lieu en conservant les grands portiques en béton. Au sud, l’ancienne ouverture où entraient les cabines est fermée par une grande baie vitrée.

La fosse est devenue le lieu du petit déjeuner.

Les murs extérieurs sont réalisés avec de la pierre sèche qui évoque inévitablement les cabanes alpines et contribue à asseoir le bâtiment dans le paysage. Sous l’habillage de pierre, l’isolation thermique est un des éléments qui permet à l’ensemble de bénéficier du label Minergie qui garantit que le bâtiment est autonome en matière d’énergie.

Si un énorme travail a été réalisé pour conserver les volumes d’origine de la gare, un défi encore plus grand a été de rendre chaleureux et accueillant cet ensemble où les structures de béton dominaient. C’est au bois que les décorateurs d’intérieur ont recouru en priorité pour transformer la froideur du béton en un ensemble chaleureux où il fait bon vivre. Planchers, murs, plafonds et meubles, le bois clair réchauffe, enrichit les volumes et fait contraste avec le gris des structures porteuses héritées du passé câblé.

A l’extérieur – et c’est là qu’on jouit du panorama le plus large – des terrasses sur trois niveaux accueillent les visiteurs avec une vue à couper le souffle sur la vallée du Rhône et les Alpes, du Cervin au Mont-Blanc. Chetzeron, en patois valaisan, la crête ronde, n’a pas volé son nom, il se situe sur la crête tant par sa situation que par son offre hôtelière. n >>> Pour plus d’informations www.chetzeron.ch

Crans-Montana: high altitude luxury at Chetzeron A ski lift station converted into a hotel A ski-lift station is typically a large, cold, noisy and drafty place. The firms of Actescollectifs Architectes and SD Construction have ingeniously converted it into a warm and cosy hotel with outstanding views over the ski resort of Crans-Montana.

with its large concrete girders has been preserved. To the south, the former entrance of the ski-lift station has been closed off by a large bay glass window. The cable car trench has been turned into a breakfast room.

The site was originally a disused cable car terminal and restaurant located at an altitude of 2,100 meters. The owner first converted the restaurant into a fine cuisine eatery and then decided to add a hotel with fifteen guest rooms.

The outside walls are built with dry stone in the style of local alpine chalets and contribute to blending the building into the surrounding landscape. The building has received the Minergie quality label thanks to its heat insulation system under the stone clad structure, thereby guaranteeing its self-sufficiency in energy.

It took a long time to complete the administrative formalities since the Lens District Council only authorised the re-use of existing surface areas but not the construction of a new building. The next step was to make the building air and leak tight to be able to carry out the conversion work during the winter months. Logistics was the next concern since access to the site is very limited. While all-road vehicles can reach the site in summer, the restaurant and hotel, which recently opened, are «cut off» in winter and are only accessible on skis, by walking fifteen minutes from the Cry d’Er ski-lift or via tracked vehicles chartered by the hotel.

A mountain cabin with a touch of luxury The conversion respects the distribution of space and maximizes the use of existing volumes. Sixteen guest rooms have been built on the eastern side while the hotel lobby and reception areas are located in the central section. In the northern part, an extension wing includes new toilets and wash-rooms for the restaurant and hotel, a conference room and a wellness centre fitted with a hammam and sauna. Major work was undertaken to preserve the original structures of the skilift station. However, the real challenge facing the architects was to make the building, with its mainly concrete structures, warm and friendly. The interior decorators chose wood to transform the impersonal concrete structures into a hospitable and inviting environment. The floors, walls, ceilings, furnishings and light-coloured reheated wood all enhance the building’s existing volumes and contrast with the supporting structures of the original cable car station.

Visitors can enjoy outside terraces on three levels which offer stunning views over the Rhone Valley and Alps, from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. Chetzeron, which means round summit in the Valais Canton dialect, fully lives up to its name since it lies at the top of a mountain and includes a top-grade hotel. n
