I found this piece on the internet coincidentally. It instantly reminded me of the ancient egytienne beds, with the decoratif footboards instead of headboards, here applied in a different, modern way with a fleetscreen attached to the board. It does not stand on feet but being low ot the ground it resembles the form of the bed shown above.

egypt ancient

This piece I found in the Abrams Guide to Period Styles for Interiors. The chair represents the ancient greek klismos form. It has paw feet, saver legs and the back comes up and curves around. This chair is more decoratif than the ancient greek chairs, but both have a cushion to provide comfort. The unique shape of the klismos chair is not as distinct which makes the chair rather timeless.

greece ancient

This boat shaped bed resembles the roman lectus. I found this also on the Abrams Guide to Period for Interior. it stands on pawed legs and you can easily see that the roman furniture relied on the greek design. However the ancient rome design was more elaborate and decoratif in its appearance. I can imagine this piece in a roman housing without effort.

The mackintosh chair I found in the book: Interior Design Illustrated. Due to its high narrow back it has a gothic touch to it. The vertical emphasis shows one of the most important aspects of the gothic era. In a certain way we could talk of a tracery (ladder-back), a geometric tracery, resembling the gothic way of decoration. To me the shape of the chair seems slightly exaggerated which is most likely intended.

This chair I came across in a german magazine called: Schöner Wohnen. Again one can see traces of the gothic design in the vertical emphasis, the acuate tapered branches and the „tracery“ composed by the branches. I found this chair rather original and interesting due to the most uncommon way the material wood is used here (in its native state) and it still represents the gothic so clearly.

Although this is not a piece of furniture I wanted to show this bottle as an example of the gothic. I saw it on a website for glass products. Even if the material´s properties itself do not allow one to see the gothic too distinct one can still make out the vertical emphasis due to the structure in the glass, as well as the elaboration of the glass which makes the bottle rather angled than round creating vertical slender views. Here again the bottle is atypical acute tapered. for me it suggests the idea of a gothic motif.

gothic

I designed this barstool to fit in the gothic period. The obvious emphasis is focused on the vertical. The three tubes build a pointed angle that you can compare to the common pointed archs used during that time.

I chose this cupboard because it reflects the perfection to which the italiens drew perspectives in the renaissance. The drawings add depth to the surface to the degree where you think it´s real. This piece of furniture I found in the germanmagazine: Häuser.

This wall resembles a modern italien renaissance wall painting. The furniture is kept simple and minimal because of the richly ornamental, decoratif wall, to keep the focus on the surface and to emphasize its appearance and not minder it by putting in interior which are also highly decoratif. This was a contradictive situation during the renaissance. Also the symmetry is distinctive on the wall as well as on the floor. I found this picture on the Internet on the Homepage of: Domicil, a german furniture store.

I spotted this piece of furniture at the milan furniture fair 2009. Just like in the italien renaissance parts of the wood of this sideboard is cut out and replaced by another material, commonly with ivory or bone, in this case the inlay is fabric, so modern version of the „certosina“ creating the same surface appearance.

renaissance italien

This bed is supposed to resemble the italien renaissance. The form of the bed a contemmporary but you have the space between the matrace and the edge, offering space for people to sit. The pattern is kept symmetrical and richly ornamented.

This table whose legs can fold in and out and whose inner boards will swing upward to make the table bigger is obviously a descendent of the late english gate-leg table from the jacobean style. You can clearly see the resemblance to the gate-leg table above. The modern one has stretchers, just like almost all tables, chairs and stools in the english renaissance did. There´s less ornamentation but we can find the typical symmetry which was common in that era.

renaissance england

This table is rather technical in its appearance compared to the richness of ornamentation during the french renaissance. Due to the period of adjustment (Francios l) to the renaissance the resmeblance to the gothique table is still obvious. We are looking at two bases, and crosspieces just like in the gothique era. I came across this table at the milan furniture fair 2009.

T

Here we see the cabriole legs, some kind of marquetry. Very symmetrical and ornamental. A modern version of a small commode. Even with this piece we can tell how thoughtful the furnitures were or are built. It is meant to be pushed against the wall for a special purpose. This furniture meant to be moved around.

This is a modern version of a baroque commode. The common ormulu is placed onto the middle of the furniture and serves also as handle. The ormulu is symmetrical and well proportioned since during that time the concern for deign and comfort evolved.

This is pretty much the typical fauteuil of the french baroque. The back is attached to the seat, the pattern is symmetrical and the seat is upholstered. It as open arms and cabriole legs. This piece seems really solid and heavy, not a chair that was meant to move around a lot. Its appearance is noble, elegant, precious and decoratif. It represented the owners standards. I found the fauteuil on the internet.

baroque france

This piece is meant to put your feet on. It is upholstered and has wooden legs. Like in the baroque period the pattern is distinctively symmetrical. Although it is a small piece it still seems heavy and solid, common for that era.

This mirror reflects the caracteristics of the rococo style. As a reaction to the baroque style we see the asymmetry. It appears very feminine with curved and ornamented wood. The importance of mirrors during that time is emphasized by the shape of the mirror and its frame. There are no straight lines and no straight angles. Again this piece seems really solid and heavy. I came across it on the internet.

I visited a friends house when I saw this piece standing in front of her fireplace. Instantly it reminded me of a french rococo piece. Ormulu ontop is ornamental, with birds and plants and it is asymmetrical. there are curved, feminine lines and the cabriole legs.

This is a modern interpretation on the fauteuil. It has asymmetrical ornamental decoration. Its shape is overall feminine and organic. We see no straight lines, everything is curved. the seat is polstered. Also the typical cabriole legs are used here. As a contrast there is a glossy synthetic used instead of fabric (silk or velvet) for the seat. This chair I found in the german magazine: H채user.

rococo france

This candleholder emphasizes the asymmetry of the rococo style. richly ornamented and decoratif. Even in this piece you see the feminine influence during that time.

Clearly the focus here is the ancient influence. In front there is the ancient roman lectus in the neoclassical interpretation with straight angles and lines and less ornamention. In the back you can see the ancient cross-legged stools here used to put your feet on. Still the neoclassical feature are not to be overseen and fit perfectly in this modern interior setting, creating an unique harmony.

The bathroom in the same house as the example before, with the simple, straight lined furniture, reminds me of the neoclassical style. This is combined with modern features and still dsitinct. Especially the washing tables resembles the neoclassical features, the straight legs, the lightness of the piece and the importance it expresses. Also the color in this bathroom is rather vivid, although not white and blue.

On a website of a designer I came across this interior setting and columns got my attention right away. A typical neoclassical feature, ancient doric columns against a mirrored wall. A lot of straight lines and light furniture. Also the table resembles the neoclassical period here in a acrylic finish. The acrylic klismos chairs as well find a space in this elgant, calming, spacious setting, where we find the popular color white as the main color.

neoclassical france

The neoclassical emphysizes the classical influence. Again the focus lies on the symmetry. The bed consists of straight lines and right angles. The ornamentation is almost gone, only the fabric, which encloses th bed shows some decoratif, symmetrical pattern.

This is a somewhat odd example of the wingback-chair. The original idea was to mask the face form the fireplace, so it would not get to hot. This modern version has the „wing“ only on one side shielding you form the warmth of the fire. It has s-shaped legs, and a stretcher ( which is actually the second leg spinned around) to add stability. You can sit on it in two different ways, one way you have a back to lean on, the other way you have a wing to protect you. During this time the secretary became popular, converting furniture for different purposes.

w+m england

The resemblance to the queen anne style is unmistably obvious when you look at this piece. The straight legs, the lower back and even seat, and the stretcher. It does not seem to be very comfortable as comfort was not really an issue during that period yet. Also the other chair is very slender and elicate, simple. None of these chairs have decoratif elements. a very symmetrical appearance. The back curves around to fit the body. I found those two pieces on the internet, on a homepage that promotes different designers.

queen anne england

Sheraton This is a somewhat odd version of a sheraton chair. His caracteristic are his square backs, that we can see in this chair. There is a vertical emphasize and decoratif elements.

Hepplewhite his chairs is known for the heartshaped-shield backs. In this modern chair we see ornaments and the round caracteristic of the back.

Chippendale This chair reminded me of the chippendale design. The resemblance to the his chair is obvious. You see the open back and the stretchers. I found this piece in the german magazine: H채user.

georgian england

During this period there is a higher interest in comfort and intimacy. Also furniture is no longer placed on the wall but in the middle of the room. This chest has decoratif elements on the back which indicates that it was not supposed to be pushed against a wall. It is well proportioned and it is richer in ornamental elements. The legs end in a ball and claw. Like the knee-hole desk above this chest is more elaborate earlier periods. Also we see the symmetry which is arising again.

georgian england

In this interior setting the floor reflects the design of the ceiling. A caractericstic of adam that you can find in almost every room designed by him. The room is symmetrical and wel proportioned.

The carved pine chimneypiece resembles the rober adam style. It is unique piece with high symmetry, flanked by floral decoration on the side.

robert adam england

A far relative of the klismos chair I chose this piece as an exmaple of the revival of the classical styles During the regency period. there is not many ornamental elements but a classical symmetry. This chair combines straight lines with curved lines. I came across this piece on the internet.

This round table is related to the drum-table of the regency style. Three legs emphysize its resemb lance to the classical ancient styles. The wood is painted in a bright color, during this period lively colors were used. You can see elaborate decoratif legs, slightly bold in appearance with a heavy pedestal base, yet less weighty than some other styles.

I chose la chaise by eames because of its unique form, that reminds me of the daybeds of the regency style. Asymmetrical, emphasizing the light side of the regency design. I found this picture in the book: 3000 chairs.

regency england

I designed this piece to fit into the regency period. The shape of the armrest resemble the ancient crosslegged curule chair which became popular again during the Regency era. The chair is upholstered and and elegant in its appearance. It reflects the ancient shape and roman decoration.

The chest on chest was a popular furniture piece during the colonial period. more elaborate than the pieces of the queen anne style. There are applied several cheerful colors used, again painting the furniture used to be common during that time.

This chair is a typical example if the colonial style in america. There is an obvious resemblance to the queen anne stale, only more elaborate and carved. the seat is uphostered and the legs end in the ball and claw.

colonial america

This interior setting reminded me of the federal style. As mirrors were very important during this time., this room obviously reflects that feature, adding balance and symmetry to the interior. I came across this interior situation in the german magazine: H채suer.

The shape of this upholstered sofa resembles the classical form of the roamn daybeds and therefore fits into the empire style. This modern version of the lectus I found in the book: 3000 chairs.

Here we go back to the originnal classic shape of the crosslegged curule stool. It has animal feet and carved woodwork. The seat is upholstered and the fabric shows a simple symmetrical ornament. I found this example on the internet.

federal/empire

america

I chose this room as an example of the Federal style because of the popularity of oval and round shapes during that time. It is a half circular room,a bathroom and the round and oval forms are continued in the interior setting.

The biedermeier caracteristic of pure and simple line is clearly visible when looking at this example of a chair. You can recognize the savor legs, originated from the klismos chair. No carving can be found on this chair, it is only the shaoe of the piece itself that defines it., creating a smooth surface. I found this chair on the internet.

Here again we ar confronted with the biedermeier caracteristics. There is the savor legs, no further carving in the wood and simple and distinct lines that define the sahppe of the chair. In its appearance this chair seems solid and heavy. This piece of furniture I found on the germany magazine: H채user.

I came across this piece on the internet and I found it rather interesting. It reminded me of the biedermeier style. The unique shape itself served as its decoration . There is no other carving or ornamentation. The piece seems solid and bold. Again we are looking at simple clear forms and lines, like common during that period.

biedermeier germany

With this chair I tried to interpret the Biedermeier style in a modern way. The structure consists of light wood and the back curves around the back. It´s simple in appearance, practical and symmetrical. There is no further decoration/ornamentarion, only the shape of the piece itself makes out its elegance.

I found this setting on a website of an interior designer who combines victorian interiors with modern furniture. We see the green paint, which parts of the walls have been coated with and the rich ornamention. There are the typically slender high doors. Because it is a modern setting there are no draperies, to open up the space and make the contemtporary furnitture pievces fit into the interior.

I found this laptop on the internet and it reminded me instantly of the victorian era, as was obviously designed to do. This is a very colorful example of a laptop. There is the ornamentation and dark „woodpaneling“. Typically this laptop also is slightly exaggerated in his design.

I chose this fabric bacause of its pattern. The name is LLForal, indicating the floral ornamentation, which was common during the victorian era. The designer is the company „sibu“, which is located in switzerland.

victorian america

This wallpattern was designed according to the Victorian era. Floral patterns were comfortable and here I used real flowers but edited them with different colors to create a more contemporary look. There is lively colors and a richness in shapes. Due to the ancient revivals during that time symmetry played a important role.

For the Thonet style there were a lot of pieces that fit into his idea of woodworking, or shaping of furniture. The one below is made of wood and than varnished. The wood is bended and shaped in to the piece of furniture. It is made to look like I consists of one piece of wood only. The piece above indicates bended wood in a different manner. There is many sticks of wood that are bended to create a comfortable chair.

This lamp consists of one piece of wood. It is bended into an elegant, yet simple shape. Like in the Thonet design we see a minimum of material, creating the maximun outcome in its elegant appearance and design. I found this piece at the milan furniture fair 2009.

I came across this chair at the milan furniture fair 2009. It looks like this piece is made of one piece, but actuallly it is two pieces of bended wood that has been varnished white. Again it is a simple composition but creating an expression of unique design, given the impression of a simple complexitiy.

thonet germany

This piece is made of one piece of wood. It is bended to create a unique form of the chair. Thonet was famous for his bended wood furniture and I designed this chair to reflect this in a modern way.

This wood burning stove was inspired by the Shaker furniture design. It is simple, yet elegant and strong. No descoration is applied, only the shpae of the piece itself defines it´s appearance. This fireplace is again multifunctional, you can sit by the fire. I found this fireplace on the Internet.

The design of the box and materials were inspired by the simplicity of traditional Shaker furniture and boxes. The wooden hinges and clean lines reflect this influence. Furthermore it is multifunctional and honest. The only variation or alternation in those pieces is the geometric sections, being a functional purpose, sonce ornamentation not related to the function was despised.

I found this piece in the Internet on a website for different designers. This is Offi´s Ovum Bassinet. simple yet special in appearance this piece is both multifunctional and practical. You know how to use it by looking at it, and you can tell it´s structure and what it´s made of, therfore indicating a honest architecture without further ornamentation, just what the Shakers valued.

shaker america

The Shaker were famous for their build in furniture. I designed a build in closet with sliding doors. There is no decoration added and in this case no handles. Still it is not boring in its appearance. It is simply efficient and that propertie makes out the product.

This lamp reminded me of the arts&crafts design. I found it on the internet. It has clean , geometric and bold vertical lines. There is different materials used like wood and inlays with shagreen.

I saw this piece at the milan furniture fair 2009. Since it was common during that arts&crafts period in europe to make furniture more elaborate and beautiful on the inside if it was plain and simple on the outside I found this piece a good example. The way it opens creates an even more special appearance when it is left open.

The geometric shape of this sofa and the high back reminded me of the arts&craft movement. It is plain and simple but still elegant and comfortable in its appearance.

arts&crafts eu/a

I designed this floorplan as en example of the arts and crafts movement , and especially Frank Lloyd Wright. The open floorplans reflects the periods style and maximizes the squarefootage. Then there is the advantage of natural light that reaches everywhere. Big windows allow the outside to get inside and vice versa.

I chose the Wiggle Side Chair (Vitra) as an example of the art nouveau design due to it´s curvy lines that resemble a whiplash. That shape was a motif during the first phase of the art nouveau movement. The chair in itself has unique forn and there is no more ornamentation or decoration necessary to underline its elaborate appearance (art nouveau in glasgow).

This bed reminded me instantly of the art nouveau. As nature was the single most important source during that time you can clearly see that the headbord og this bed was inspired by naure. In this case the branches of a tree. Also the color scheme is nature related with earthy tones. I found this piece on the internet.

This sidetable clearly states the relationship to nature once again. A unnique caracteristic of the art nouveau period. The legs of the table are supposed to give the impression of the branches of a tree supporting it (primary structure). Also glaswork was played a big role. Agian the color are kept in earthy tones.

art nouveau eu/a

The design of this side table is supposed to reflect the art nouveau movement in glasgow. It has distinct clean ans straight lines, and a vertical emphasis and a strong geometric appearance, resembling the mackintosh designs. The table of made of wood, and painted black like common during that time.

I chose those tube lamps because of their vertical ermphasize. They reminded me of the lamp by gerrit rietfeld. right angles and geometric forms and verical lines are all indicators of the de stijl movement and are provided in this piece. I came across this lamp at the world furniture fair 2009 in milano.

This bookcase clearly fits into the destjil movement . It is a beautiful composistion of geometric elements and straight vertical and horizontal lines, creating a furniture that make a strong impression. I found this piece on the internet and it s one of my favorite pieces in this journal.

A better example of 2 geometric form put togather to create a strong furniture piece is hard to find. It is made of glass , stone and tubular steel, connected to biuld this composition of a furniture piece with right angles vertical and horizontal lines and geometric shapes.

de stijl netherlands

I designed this table to fit the de stijl period. I used the primary colors that were common during that time. The piece consists of straight lines and simple geometric forms, that are linked to gather to create an overall proportional aesthetic. The construction method is shown and the structural elements are clearly visible.

I saw this pieces at the world furniture fair 2009 in milano. Due to their functionality, the simple, straight lines and the geometric form it reminded me of the international style. Also the mutlifuncionality was an indication for me. There is no ormanentation or other decorational elements.

This simple design reminded me instantly of the international period. Such a simple straight forward design and still so beautiful in its appearance. No further elements are needed to create a strong impression, consisting only on geometric forms. This says it alland fits perfectly in an international environment with a lot of glass and concrete walls. I found this piece on the internet.

This chair resembles the chairs from the international style. I found it on the internet. The piece expresses a simple design, made of geometrci forms and modern materials. Steel was widely used during that time and indicated stength and lightness.

international international

This sofa is meant to blend into an interior setting in the international manner. earthly tones, no pattern , and no further ornamentation or decorative elements. The fabric is leather which was used during that style period. It contains straight lines and a simple design deriving from a rectangle. Tubular steel is used as a structural element.

I found this piece on the internet. Due to its lack of decoration and ornamentation I thought of the bauhaus stil. Straight lines, and simple design emphasize this. It is made of glass and steel, both being materials used during the bauhaus. The table is strictly functional and provides a light impression.

During the bauhaus is usage to tubular steel evolved. This is why I chose this chait and table, which I found on the internet. Again we look at a simple design, indicating strength, lightness and subtleness. This set is functional with straight and clean lines and no desocrational elements.

I found this piece on the internet. Made of tubular steel it reminds me of the bauhaus stil. It concists of simple straight lines lacking any ornamental indication. It appears to be strong and light, and receives its shape and form from the purpose it was designed, therefore this piece is strictly functional.

bauhaus germany

I designed a simple bed, where the structural elements are tubular steel. No further onrmantation or other elements to create a nice aesthetic. Plain, functional.

As an expample of the scandinavian design I chose this chair from the IKEA catalgue. It refers to the bent wood chairs that alvar aalto designed. Light wood is used with this chair, as it was typical in the scandinavian design.

Theis stool I found on the internet and it reminded me of the alva aalto designs. Again bent, light wood is used and a simple design is applied.

This silverware by henning koppel reminds me of the scandinavian design due to its organic and swung lines.

scandinavian scandinavia

I found this piece at the world furniture fair 2009 in milano. I think it fits into the art deco due to its unique and precious appearance and shape. The design of the lamp is made of glass, a desirable material during the art deco.

The facade of this house is obviously linked to the art deco design. Geometric lines and shapes emphasize this. A lot of glass is used to let in the natural light, also a characteristic of the art deco period. I found this building facade on the internet.

This chair reminded me instantly of Eileen Gray´s Bibendum chair and therefore of the art deco design. Again the unique and distinct shape is obvious. This piece also I found on the internet.

art deco france

The extraordinary bathtub is designed to fit the luxury style. It is made out of marble . And I used the stairs motif to emphasize its origin. Again a lot of clean lines and a simple composition combined with an expensive material.

This lamp fits into the midcentury modern. Simple, straight lines and modest form. It consists of bend wire which was common during that time. It is a really open design which indicates the connection of the outside and the inside. I saw this piece at the world furniture fair in milano 2009.

I chose this washing table because if its straight and simple design. Again I saw this piece at the world furniture fair in milano 2009. Due to its open and accessible design it it remined me of the midcentury pop and it could easily be used a such a home.

The wire is a characteristic in midcentury modern design. It resembles the work of harry bertoia who used bend wire for its chairs as the main material. I found this chair at the world furniture fair 2009 in milano.

modern america

I chose to design a kitchen that emphasizes the fact that it becomes more and more a central point of the house. This kitchen is integrated in an open floorplan and is situated in the middle of the first floor, right between the living room, the hall and the dining area.

I saw this piece at the milano world furniture fair 2009. It fits into the pop design because it is made of pastic, organic shaped, ergonomically formed and unique. Looking at this chair it reminded me instantly of the pop because of its magnificant difference to regular furniture.

This chaise resembles the pop design due to its unique, distinct shape. It is formed to fit the human body and the upper panel will give in according to the person lying on the piece. It is made of plastic and topped with a vivid green color to ensure comfort not only in its form but with upholstery. This piece was exhibited at the milano world furniture fair 2009. below is an image of the panton chairs as well as the elephant (eames) in a different finish, designed especially for the world furniture fair 2009 in milano.

The organic form of the chair reminded me of the op design and i chose it because of its vivid bright color, and unique and organic forms and the comfort it expresses. again the seat and the back is movable according to the person sitting in it to ensure maximum comfort and ergonomic characteristics. I found this chair at the world furniture fair in milano 2009.

pop usa/gb

This chaise longue fits into the pop design. I chose a vivid lively color to match the pop color prefernces. It is made from plastic and two sheets of plexiglass hold it togeather. Both materials being used during the pop era. the form is slightly exaggerated and ergonomically desirable for the human body as vertical panels will move according to the person lying on it.
