Master’s Project
Fall 2014 Professor Steve Cooke Thesis research began with the exploration of the way Western culture views death and the way people honor and remember their ancestors. Choosing to study precedents like Carlo Scarpa’s Brion cemetery in order to see sucessful projects in this subject. The main objective was to create an atmosphere that can bring people together to celebrate and honor life. What we are lacking as a society today is having funerary rituals. Having a reason that will bring us back to remember the person we once loved. The procession throughout the project is composed of experiential transitions by a main pathway for funerary rituals, as well as, grave gardens. There are multiple pathways to each section of the grave gardens to allow the public to explore through an undetermined sequence.

The Approach
The entrance is located on the east side of the site. The public would be at grade level and begin to descend into the lower levels. Entering into a tunneling effect with a heavy overhead condition to protect the users from the elements while creating a play of light and shadow throughout the procession. This tunnel is represents entry into a different world as the user submerges into the project to reach their final destination. 020
The Funerary Hall
T he funer ar y hall is lo cated at the end o f the procession where the funer ar y cerem o nies and wakes are held . T he f unerary hall f aces the P ug et S o und and is o p en to the s ky, creating a ce lestial atmosphere. The lo uv er walls p ro v id e p r iv acy,as well as fr am ing v ie ws to the sound ahead. 021

CHAIR This was a two week project to design and fabricate
a full scale chair. I
decided to design and build a bar tool prototype .The materials used for this bar tool are Sapele wood which has a reddish color to it, as well as an all steel structure for support. What makes this chair special is the specific notches that are made throughout the chair. This is made in order to create a harmonious relationship between the two materials. 026
