STRATEGY
Assessment: The site comprises of intricate assembly of buildings forming two large courtyard spaces. The frontage of the school addresses the main street by the means of a small square used also for parking bicycles. There is an existing theatre/meeting hall at the front next to the main entrance and two smaller sports gymnasiums at the far back facing each other across the smaller courtyard. The larger courtyard has been recently remodeled and now has an external seating/amphitheatre like area connecting with the lower level of the building. Most of the buildings are connected either by covered walkways or internal corridors and stairs.
What are the main advantages of the existing masterplan? The complex is designed in a linear way making best use of the perimeter of the site. This interconnected assembly of long and thin buildings creates a natural link/circulation routes between the buildings as well as making best use of daylight. Although the overall building shape appears slightly unbalanced, its internal spaces offer great flexibility.
What are the main weaknesses of the existing masterplan? The front part of the complex feels rather unfinished. The existing assembly/theatre hall has very peculiar connection with the north wing both internally and externally. Its awkward location is also the reason why the south wing feels slightly detached. Why the new sports/meeting hall should not be located between the two gymnasiums? As it is, the existing masterplan is unbalanced. Its most complete parts are at the centre and the rear and most fragile/unfinished one is at the front. If any of the proposed new buildings are to be constructed at the back this would turn the unfinished but stable boat into precarious raft.
What is a feasible strategy for the competition brief? Build a new muiltifunctional hall addressing and furfilling all necessary requirements while refurbishing the existing gymnasiums in a playful way into new classrooms. By doing this, the rear of the complex will largely retain its appearence but also will add the new asset in much more integral way.
Proposed new multifunctional hall: The new building is situated over the basement of the existing meeting hall and extending across the main entrance external space. The basement of the existing hall is converted into changing rooms. The new hall is lowering the slab of the entrance foyer and also removing 50sq.m off the area of the south wing in order to create a free area of 1100sq.m for the proposed new flexible space. The new meeting/sports hall is reusing most of the existing circulation spaces adding some additional escape routes. The main objective of the space is to have clear headroom of 12meters above the basketball/volleyball pitch and to be able to host up to 960 people when not used for training. When used for sport, the hall offers six badminton courts, or three badminton and one volleyball or two volleyball or one basketball. When used for events, the proposed seating comprises of two retractable bleacher-seating units, located at each end of the hall with total capacity of 960 people. The larger unit has seating for 640, the smaller for 320. There location of the current gallery will be retained creating a bew balcony looking across the hall. The structure is designed in cantilevered laminated timber beams forming a large lightweight rooflight structure above the hall. The basement beneath the hall is to be a masonry plinth built in reused bricks from the existing meeting hall. The outer walls of the hall are divided into two. The lower part is designed in brick and the upper part and the roof clad in copper.
Proposed new classrooms in refurbished gymnasiums: The location of the existing gymnasiums at the back is ideal for additional classrooms. The two buildings are well connected with the main body of the school and have both south facing windows. Their refurbishment into classrooms would be more effective then building new once but also offers much greater scope for the use of reclaimed and recycled building materials in spontanious and playful way.
