AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY REVELS IN HUGELY SUCCESSFUL EXPO

The Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo and Collision Repair Expo have returned in spectacular fashion

Held across three days (April 7-9), the shows proved to be milestone events for the aftermarket industry as it launches into a new era. Thousands of trade visitors travelled from across Australia and New Zealand to experience all that the country’s premier industry event had to offer. For many, it was the first chance to connect and network in person in nearly three years, and for the first time, Expo-Saturday saw the public join trade visitors to experience the best of Australia’s $25 billion aftermarket industry. “The Auto Aftermarket and Collision Repair Expo exceeded our expectations,” Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said. “There was an incredible buzz across the Expo having the industry back together. The quality and variety of exhibitors was exceptional and to see the enthusiasm of trade visitors networking face-toface was truly appreciated by all. “The feedback about the Expo has been overwhelmingly positive from exhibitors and visitors.” With the theme ‘The Future Is Here’, the Expo’s features were designed around the most comprehensive seminar program in the Expo’s history. Sessions focused on the most important industry topics including Mandatory Data Sharing, the skills shortage and electric vehicles. Other sessions covered business development, digital marketing, customer service, technical topics and much more. “The event set a new benchmark in delivering the most comprehensive and interactive education program ever, which included speaker panels featuring technical experts, workshop owners, politicians, educators, international guests and the new Workshop of the Future sessions,” Stuart said. “We delivered an unprecedented gathering of expertise and experience to help trade visitors prepare for their future.” The all-new Workshop of the Future Pavilion took the education program to a new level, with daily sessions to help fast-track the automotive industry’s understanding of and transition to, servicing and repairing the future generation of vehicles, covering the ICE and EV car parc. The Expo was officially opened on Thursday the 7th of April by Senator Deborah O’Neill, a longtime supporter of the aftermarket industry and the campaign for mandatory data sharing. Senator O’Neill was joined by Stuart Charity, AAAA Board Chairman, Mark Pedder, and Allin Towbars Managing Director, Penni Donato. Over 270 of the industry’s leading brands exhibited at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, showcasing the latest vehicle repair and servicing equipment, parts, tools and accessories, new technology and trends. The Expo is also where the industry celebrates and recognises excellence in the automotive aftermarket industry across a wide range of award categories. Taking place on Thursday evening of the Expo, the Australian Auto Aftermarket Awards banquet was a record-breaking event, with more than 880 industry guests enjoying an unforgettable evening at Crown’s Palladium to celebrate the magnificent achievements of industry champions and innovators. The Expo had no shortage of entertainment for visitors across three days, including the new 4WD Innovation Zone, appearances by many of the biggest names in Australian motorsport, Supercar champions, race car displays, tool and equipment demonstrations and interactive activities. “Opening to the public on Saturday alongside our trade visitors was a new initiative, which added an exciting vibe and allowed us to showcase the best of the industry to the next generation of automotive technicians,” Stuart said. “Seeing young attendees utterly enthralled by the stands and demonstrations and hearing their commitment to joining our pool of talent in years to come was very uplifting. “I want to thank everyone involved in making this Expo one to remember. Our exhibitors, visitors, industry experts who presented across the weekend, the IEC event team, the AAAA Board, the AAAA team and everyone in our industry who has supported the AAAA and the Expos. “I’d like to acknowledge the support of Auto Aftermarket Expo Major Sponsor Repco, and Collision Repair Expo Major Sponsor SAPE Group, and all of our valued partners and sponsors who helped us run this amazing industry event. “We are already looking forward to 2024.” For more information, visit www.autoaftermarketexpo.com.au

LABOR BACKS INDUSTRY AT AAAE

Senator O’Neill played an important part in the opening events for AAAE

Labor Senator Deborah O’Neill played a proud role on the opening day of the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo, speaking at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Innovation Awards Breakfast before just hours later cutting the ribbon to officially open AAAE. At both functions, she outlined Labor’s support for the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Industry and outlined Labor’s plans if elected. “I believe in fairness in business just as much as I believe in fairness in the workplace. You have my word that I, along with my Labor colleagues, will always stand up for domestic businesses, for Australian apprentices, and for local manufacturers. You are vital to our nation’s capacity and shared future,” Senator O’Neill said at the breakfast. “This is a big market, it makes money, but it also gives joy, and it builds communities of enthusiasts and innovators. I know it is your world, and the government has a part to play in making that world sustainable and improving it. “One in four Australian businesses are now experiencing critical skills shortages, yet we know there are still millions of Australians who are looking for work or for more work. Labor hears you. We need to fix this crisis and that is why Labor will invest $621 million over the next four years to create 465,000 fee-free TAFE places. “It is not just young Australians looking for work that will benefit from our policy, it will be all of your businesses that will benefit. We know that hiring the right person is tough, but Labor’s plans will mean there are more and more skilled graduates and apprentices coming through so there will be a greater pool of labour to pick from. “Nine out of 10 jobs in the future will require a VET qualification or a university degree. Labor’s policy will help future proof our country by investing now into our own people because we believe Australians are up for that task and will seize the opportunity. “Labor will also revitalise the manufacturing sector. We cannot be a nation of only finance, agriculture and mining. We have the talents, we have the resources, and we have the right kind of attitude to rebuild manufacturing in Australia and Labor has the policies to do just that. “Labor will support domestic manufacturing and a future made in Australia. An Albanese-led Government will supply up to 15 billion dollars in capital to invest in job creation projects. That is real, tangible support to kick start manufacturing in Australia once again. “Labor will deliver stability in the energy portfolio and help industry unlock the possibilities of a net zero future. And it is with that certainty that your businesses and this sector can plan and thrive. We need to work alongside industries like yours as we transition our economy and transport infrastructure to hit that net zero target by 2050. “Labor will get this country moving again. We want to deliver more jobs; we want to train more apprentices. Labor will back you. “I thank you for your endeavours as business owners and workers in those businesses who deliver such joy into the Australian community and also deliver fantastic jobs and the successes that flow from business into the community.” For more on AAAE, visit www.autoaftermarketexpo.com.au

A major highlight of the Expo, the Awards banquet evening saw an all-time record of more than 880 industry guests come to celebrate and recognise excellence in the automotive aftermarket industry across a wide range of award categories. The evening also marked the opportunity to honour a number of worthy individuals, through the Outstanding Service to Industry Award and the Kim Aunger Young Achiever Award, along with two new inductions into the AAAA Hall of Fame. DAVID FRASER INDUCTED INTO AAAA HALL OF FAME

David’s career includes more than 36 years in the automotive industry

Group Chief Executive Officer of the Capricorn Society, David Fraser, was announced as one of the latest inductees into the AAAA Hall of Fame at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet. David has held senior sales, marketing and general management roles over the past two decades. Prior to his appointment as Capricorn’s Group Chief Executive Officer in July of 2019, he was Chief Executive Officer of the co-operative’s Automotive Division from 2013. In 2019 David received an Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award in recognition of his leadership, innovation, vision, work ethic and integrity which has made a positive and measurable impact to the ongoing development of Australia’s Automotive Aftermarket Industry. He is a current Director of various Capricorn subsidiary Boards, Director of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals, Deputy Chairman of the Co-operatives Federation of WA, and a Director of the Western Australian Motor Industry Foundation. He is also a former Director and past President of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association. David holds a Master of Business Administration, is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has completed Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. He is a Fellow of each of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Institute of Management and the Governance Institute of Australia. “I am a little shocked and surprised and I feel very honoured and very privileged to be receiving this award,” David said. “Thank you to the aftermarket association for recognising what I have been able to achieve throughout my time in the industry. It has been a privilege. “I think we should never forget we live in exciting times. In the next decade or two what is going to happen in the industry we have chosen to work in is going to be one of the most exciting times a number of us have experienced and I think from that perspective, we should be looking forward to some of the challenges that are going to come. “Certainly, in my journey with the AAAA national council, one of the most challenging but also rewarding periods was the 13 years that we did spend working towards the choice of repairer campaign. “I have been very fortunate – I joined the council in 2001 and stepped down in 2018 and throughout that period I had two employers that were very supportive, and my current employer, the Capricorn Society, have always been supportive of my time and involvement on the council. “It is a big commitment, but I encourage anyone who has an interest and a passion for helping shape the future of our industry to never be frightened to put your name up when the opportunity comes along and to take the opportunity to join the board of the AAAA. “Thank you to my wife and my two kids who have always supported me. When you take on those kind of roles, that is time you spend away from your family, and I have been very fortunate that my wife and two children have always supported that. Thank you also to Stuart and the Association, I do feel very humbled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.” The AAAA Hall of Fame Award was established to honour people in the automotive aftermarket industry whose creativity and accomplishments have contributed to the stature and development of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Industry. Since 1977, the AAAA has recognised individuals whose vision, work ethic, integrity and character have made a positive and measurable impact driving the ongoing development of Australia’s Automotive Aftermarket Industry. HSP CELEBRATES AT AAAE

The HSP Roll R Cover Series 3 was awarded as the Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product in the Accessories category

After three years HSP has returned to the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo. With so much time away from any trade stands, the HSP team was eager to display its new suite of products and show what it has been up to. HSP’s hero product, the HSP Roll R Cover Series 3, was also nominated for the Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product (accessory) for 2022, taking out the win – the second show in a row at which HSP has won this award (the first being for the HSP Tail Lock in 2019). The HSP Stand included four displays that covered its whole suite of products including the award-winning Roll R Cover Series 3. The team at HSP states they had been working on the Series 3 Roll R Cover since 2016 and had only released it in 2021 during the Pandemic. The key differences between series 2 and 3 are the whole unit is a lot more modular, it has more advanced water drainage, a universal track built into the side rails and of course, the triple operation (being a mobile app, touchpad and factory remote integration). These features are not only a step-up from the series 2 cover but are very individual to HSP as there is reportedly no other cover in the world with all these features. On the stand was also HSP’s new sports bar named ‘Armour Bar’ which was showcased for the first time, prior to its anticipated release in May. The new sports bar is a different style of product for HSP as they have mainly concentrated on covers and tub accessories, however the team says the product was very well received by the crowds and was a great way to show the industry and public the product and get some hype around it. The team at HSP has managed to keep all manufacturing of its core products in Australia and has recently built its third manufacturing facility in Victoria, which is set to open in the next month. “The new purpose-built facility will help HSP keep up with current demands as well as expand our products internationally,” HSP Director of Development, Max Aimaq, said. “We are so excited to see what the future of manufacturing in Australia will mean for HSP.” If you are interested in working with or for HSP, please contact info@hsputelids.com

OUTSTANDING SERVICE REWARDED

Stephen Bird has been announced as the winner of the 2022 AAAA Outstanding Service to Industry Award

The AAAA Outstanding Service to Industry Award is the most prestigious of the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards, and its winner is also inducted into the AAAA Hall of Fame. 2022 winner Stephen Bird started his career in the Automotive Aftermarket on the 4th of February 1974 under the Repco Management Cadet program. He quickly developed a passion and love for both the company and the industry which set his career on a journey through the ranks at Repco and GPC Asia Pacific. He is now enjoying his wellearned retirement after a distinguished and highly successful career. “I feel very privileged to have worked for a fantastic company in such a strong industry and with some great people,” Stephen said. “For 43 years I just loved going to work. The thing I love most about the Automotive business is that it is truly a people business. Building healthy relationships both internally and externally is critical for success and something I loved to do. It is an industry filled with exceptional people. “I spent over 20 years in the store and distribution network and met some amazing people. I don’t have time to thank all the people who mentored and assisted me during my operations journey, but I would like to thank Wayne Bryant, Douggie Smith and Mal Dunning for their support over the past 30 years. “Moving into Merchandise was a challenge I really enjoyed. Being a supplier in our industry isn’t always easy but we do have a resilient and enthusiastic supplier base who help us to look after our customers. Some people in the supplier community stand apart from the others through their proactiveness and willingness to go the extra mile – a big thank you to John Zhao and Ron Brooks, Gino Ricuitti, Chris Hatton and Kevin Holmes, Boo Khoo, Gerry Nabarro, Toby Dymond and John Firth. “Throughout my career I worked with some great teams but can say the Automotive Merchandise team was the hardest working and most fun team I have worked with. Again, there are too many people to thank but a big shout out to David Cattunar, Gareth Robinson and Daisy Balcombe. “Thanks also go to our team in NZ. Many years ago, the business made the decision to merge the Merchandise and back office departments of the Australian and NZ businesses. It was a bumpy road at times but with the support of Jonathon Maddren, Louise Sixton, Allister Hughes and Andrew Barry we successfully achieved all our goals. And thanks guys for making my team and I welcome in NZ and also for introducing us to Danny Doolans. “My thanks also go to the Merchandise Leadership team and in particular, Graeme Heine, Linh Chieng and Brett Jennings. There were some hard times, good times, ups and downs but we nearly always delivered our numbers and had many laughs along the way. “During the journey I have worked under numerous Managers, EGMs and CEOs, but special thanks go to Gary Dunwell, John Moller, and Rob Cameron for all your encouragement and support and for letting me be me. “But my biggest thank you goes to my wife and children. Their understanding and support allowed me to build my career. Thanks to Claire, Jemma, and Riley. “The AAAA does a fantastic job in representing and championing the industry and I believe it has gone a to a new level over the past 10 years. Thank you to the AAAA for this prestigious award. It is a huge honour and I really appreciate it.” For more information about the awards, visit www.aftermarketawards.com.au

AUSTRALIA-FIRST NISSHINBO BRAKES LAUNCH AT EXPO

The 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo was special for several “firsts”

It was the first time the event had run since COVID19, and it was also the first time Adrad had shown brake products on display, but the big “first” for Adrad was the availability of Nisshinbo braking parts in Australia. If you visited the Adrad stand and saw the Nisshinbo products on display, you were part of a historymaking moment for Australia’s aftermarket parts industry, as this was the first time these products were shown in Australia, says Adrad. Adrad offers both the Nisshinbo and Mintex ranges of braking products and says these OE quality products are expected to be well-received by the market, based on the “excellent pedigree” of the TMD Friction group. Adrad explains that like many other products available from Adrad, these are supplied by globally recognised manufacturers. Not only does Nisshinbo supply parts to the new car industry, but the company also has a history harking back to 1943, before Australia even started making cars; while the history of Mintex dates back even further to 1908. These may be very old and established names, but Adrad says their designs employ the very latest technology. Some of the clever product design features include floating shims that help isolate vibration, or a “J-Chamfer” that reduces squeal throughout the life of the brake pad. New generation Non-Asbestos Organic friction material that incorporates “Strong Ceramic” material also delivers better performance for light commercial and heavy SUV applications.

A historic moment with Nisshinbo brakes shown for the first time in Australia on Adrad’s Expo stand.

Adrad reports that its other existing product ranges have also expanded, with new additions to its collections of Radiator Packs, Fan Clutches, EGR Coolers, Compressor Kits, Ignition Coils, Gas Struts and of course, Crash Packs for collision repair workshops. For product enquiries or to learn more about Adrad’s everexpanding range, call 1800 628 723. Account customers can also go online to shop for Adrad parts.

ANTHONY KITTEL INDUCTED INTO AAAA HALL OF FAME

The REDARC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director was celebrated on the first night of AAAE

At the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet, REDARC Electronics Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Anthony Kittel, was announced as one of the latest inductees into the AAAA Hall of Fame. REDARC is a South Australian based electronics manufacturer currently employing more than 300 people. Established in 1979, the multiaward winning REDARC manufactures a range of Power Conversion Products including Battery Management Systems, Power Supplies, DC/DC Voltage Converters and Inverters. “I am absolutely surprised and shocked to be honest,” Anthony said upon being announced as an inductee. “It has been a wonderful 25 years of owning REDARC and developing a business from eight people in Adelaide to a business of more than 300 people today; and revenue of less than 1 million to more than 150 million,” Anthony said. “It has been an exciting journey. As everyone knows you have to have a great team of people and a great family to support you in this journey and I really appreciate everyone that has backed me and given me this opportunity to succeed. “A belief in manufacturing in Australia is my passion and I believe this country can do and can continue to do much better than we have in the past. I have been glad to see a lot more focus on manufacturing, particularly during COVID, and a lot can happen in this country, commercialising IP and taking products to the world, and that is what REDARC’s aim is. “I have always had a goal to have the REDARC brand be known internationally, and we are slowly but surely succeeding by breaking into the North America and European markets which was really pleasing, and we still have a long journey to go. I hope to see many more years to come in that success. “I would like to thank our staff, they are a really committed bunch of people – you know when you are in the trenches, and you look alongside you and have a great team to support you, that is when you know you can do amazing things and we have really had some great successes over the years. “The customer is the foundation of our business, and we have some magnificent customers in the room tonight, people that love our brand, people that support our brand and support us as a team, and I really appreciate everything everyone has done for us and our business and hopefully we are able to show that in spades back in the support we have been able to provide you. “This is a continuous journey – people come to me and say REDARC is a great overnight success story but as you know, it is the result of those one percenters, those little things you do each and every year getting better and better, and we continue to strive to be a global company and a local success story. “This industry supports us, and we are very thankful for what you have done for us and thankful for the results we have been able to achieve. “I am just amazed and delighted to be a recipient tonight and be in such great company and I am very, very humbled to be accepting this award.” The AAAA Hall of Fame Award was established to honour people in the automotive aftermarket industry whose creativity and accomplishments have contributed to the stature and development of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Industry. Since 1977, the AAAA has recognised individuals whose vision, work ethic, integrity and character have made a positive and measurable impact driving the ongoing development of Australia’s Automotive Aftermarket Industry. GATES AUSTRALIA CONCLUDES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL AAAE

The Gates Australia stand was a real crowd-pleaser at the Expo

The Gates Australia stand at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo (AAAE) showcased Gates’ latest products in automotive power transmission and fluid power. Gates says this was not the only reason the stand attracted many attendees, with giveaways and hundreds of fresh Gates donuts (all individually wrapped to be COVID-safe) also featuring. Attendees also played on two Gates Retro Arcade Game Drums on the stand and the Gates sponsored V8 SuperUte was on display in the Expo foyer. Visitors to the Gates stand had the chance to enter to win the Retro Arcade Game Drums simply by scanning the QR codes printed on the donuts. Other prizes included the Gates retro mini fridge and $350 worth of Penrite Racing Merchandise. Four lucky winners were contacted after the event, and all were very excited with their win. The primary focus of the stand was the Protect the Ride campaign, consisting of three operating systems of the vehicle, accessory belt drive, timing, and cooling. The Protect the Ride campaign advocates for a full system replacement which ensures more profitable jobs for workshops and less customer comebacks. The Gates Modular Hose was also featured, as with the growing trend towards hybrid and electric vehicles, the more complex modular hoses are becoming more prominent in modern day vehicles. Gates says its Modular Hoses offer great sales opportunities for distributors, resellers and workshops alike. The Gates stand also had two special guests from Gates Denver, Global Product Line Director, Drew Conkling; and VP Aftermarket Global Marketing and Product Management, David Miller, to assist over the three days. Gates yet again sponsored the Expo’s very popular Happy Hour on the Friday evening from 6.00 to 7:30pm, with many flocking to the Gates stand to collect a free beverage and enjoy the great networking opportunity with other attendees and exhibitors from all over the expo. The Gates Sponsored Penrite Racing drivers Lee Holdsworth and David Reynolds – who was hot off his podium placement at the Grand Prix earlier that day – also came in for a meet and greet and to sign autographs. Accompanying them was Gates’ very own V8 SuperUte Driver, Dean Brooking. Gates would like to congratulate and thank the AAAA on another great Expo, which showcased the strength and resilience of the automotive aftermarket in Australia. YOUNG ACHIEVER CELEBRATED

Brendan Sorenson has been awarded the Kim Aunger Young Achiever Award

Brendan Sorensen was heralded at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet as the Kim Aunger Young Achiever Award recipient. The Kim Aunger Young Achiever Award is presented in honour of one of the founders and former Presidents of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, Kim Aunger, who tragically lost his life whilst still in his prime. First presented in 1992, this Award recognises the achievements of an individual in the industry who is under 35 years of age and has demonstrated through their work, their leadership and in their community, all the attributes of a future leader in our industry and society. Completing his apprenticeship in 2010 under the watchful eye of his father at Steve Sorensen Mechanical, Brendan Sorensen soon realised if you could diagnose a car that others cannot, you can win a customer for life, which led him down the path of self-learning as a specialty diagnostician. Embracing the emerging technology connecting technicians around the globe, Brendan set a schedule to study 12 hours spread across the week, after his daily workshop duties, joining seminars and forums from all over the world. This learning was complemented by attending various night and weekend tradesmen level technical classes on emerging vehicle technologies and repair. In 2015, Maurice Donovan, winner of the 2019 AAAA Outstanding Service to Industry Award, begun a mentorship, and friendship, that inevitably introduced Brendan to a progressive group of likeminded learners, thinkers, and sharers – ‘The Automotive Technician.’ During this time, Brendan established his own YouTube and Facebook presence, firstly on the Sorensen Mechanical page to display their capabilities, then later on ‘The Automotive Technician’ page, teaching innovative diagnostic techniques, accruing millions of views and thousands of subscribers worldwide. His day-job at Steve Sorensen Mechanical incorporates the role of lead diagnostician where he focuses on troubleshooting vehicles and guiding his fellow staff technicians through their own skills growth in the area, as well as the Workshop Manager/Owner role. This leadership mindset certainly led to Brendan’s directorship invitation to TaT, and he has thrived within the website-based company, with Brendan mostly dedicating evenings, to implementing forward thinking ideas to add value to TaT members. With an official role of ‘TaT Technical Team and Training Director,’ Brendan now heads a handpicked group of team members, consisting of some of the best and brightest in their respective automotive fields across Australasia. Brendan is one of the more recognised trainers on the Australian circuit, praised for his dynamic, practical teaching style; and is also focused on succession planning for his transition into owner of the family business as his parents, Steve and Robyn, plan retirement over the coming years. “What a surprise, thank you very much. I am not an extraordinary person, I am just a hard-working person who had the right people around me; a lot of leaders that are in this room tonight, and a lot of mentors, including Maurice, my parents, and the fellow TaT directors,” Brendan said. “There are young people out there that want to succeed, and they want to see the industry succeed, so if you can take someone on as a mentorship that is the way we are going to get over this skills shortage. “Every one of us has a role. I will be taking some younger guys under our wing, and I urge you to do the same. “I think we have a long and prosperous industry ahead of us.” For more information, visit www.aftermarketawards.com.au

MARKETING EXCELLENCE CELEBRATED

The Terry Mahoney Excellence in Marketing Award recognised three leading companies

At this year’s Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet, the Terry Mahoney Excellence in Marketing Award celebrated Zeder Australia for Whiteline (Bronze), Fulcrum Suspensions (Silver) and Valvoline Australia (Gold). Terry Mahoney was one of the driving forces in the formation of the AAAA. He served eight years on National Council, including two years as President and was awarded the Outstanding Service to Industry in 1998. An accomplished businessman and marketer, this award is dedicated in Terry’s memory and is open to all Australian manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers of automotive replacement parts, accessories, tools and equipment who are members of the AAAA. Valvoline Australia was awarded the Gold Terry Mahoney Marketing Excellence Award for its ‘The Original Engine Oil’ and ‘You Know’ campaigns. Valvoline states that it is the first American branded engine oil, explaining that in 1866, Dr John Ellis discovered the lubricating benefits of crude oil and founded the company that became Valvoline. “The rich history of Valvoline marked the launch of The Original Engine Oil campaign proclaiming the company’s status as America’s first engine oil brand internationally in over 50 countries back in 2019,” Valvoline Marketing Manager for ANZ, Kate Phillips, said. “In 2021, Valvoline ANZ evolved to The Original Engine Oil, returning to our local historical roots, but with a modern twist. “Welcome to You Know – it is short, punchy and harkens back to the heritage of the ‘People Who Know’ and ‘You Know What I Mean’ campaigns. “You Know is a modern conversational term used very naturally by much of the Australian and New Zealand populations. The campaign also honours the longstanding innovation of the company. “Touting the world’s first racing oil, first synthetic blend and first high mileage engine oils, Valvoline has consistently shown its focus on innovating and reinventing engine oil for the evolving automotive, commercial, and industrial customer needs. “It’s an honour for Valvoline to receive such recognition from the automotive aftermarket for the campaign. “Valvoline has always strived to be at the forefront on innovation with a rich history, including being The Original Engine Oil – that’s one of the key messages of the campaign and why Valvoline have been trusted for over 150 years”. LED AUTOLAMPS SHINES AT EXPO

The lighting designer and manufacturer showcased its latest products at AAAE

LED Autolamps said it was proud and excited to showcase its latest in lighting products, active and on display in all their glory at the recent 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo. LED Autolamps explained that the person-toperson networking missed throughout the last two years is best for securing and strengthening business relationships rather than phone or video conferencing; noting that the response received from visitors to its stand was “beyond belief,” highlighting the importance of this opportunity for brand exposure. LED Autolamps featured its new 385X range of dynamically lit rear combination lighting, stating that the year 2020, which most people would prefer to move forward from and forget, was a time at LED Autolamps when it saw an opportunity that spurned a creative revolution in its lighting design. The 385X range currently offers eight distinctive designs, which LED Autolamps says gives its customers a choice for almost any application, something it says its customers continually ask for when considering their trailer or vehicle designs. The 385X range on display and fully activated at the show allowed LED Autolamps’ customers and potential customers to see the brilliance in lighting design and the ingenious use of multiple options on a one size-based platform, added LED Autolamps. “The response received was nothing short of overwhelmingly positive and following many 4x4 or adventure social media channels over 2021, we can see the encouraging reviews from consumers,” LED Autolamps National Sales Manager, Ashley Piper, said. “This simplistic format paves the way for almost endless variations in style, size, and design, offering design choices in nearly unlimited ways, including exclusive opportunities for OEM manufacturers.” LED Autolamps explained that it had also brought back, by popular demand, its original range of Rechargeable pocket lights, head torches and Workshop Inspection Lamps, which are outlined briefly below. • PL170 Penlight: slim and compact, this penlight is small enough to fit neatly in your pocket and bright enough for instant convenience. It includes a top torch function. • PL190 Pocket Light: super-bright and heavy-duty for all situations with top torch function and a high and low main light. • HT70 Head Position Lamp: no task will be left unlit with an incredibly bright high-power mode and a battery-saving economy mode with a tilt-adjustable head, including a non-slip elastic headband and an on/off motion sensor. • HH190 and HH190-1 with charging dock: perfect for general workshop inspection lighting, a super-strong rear magnet and magnetic base, including a 180-degree seven-position adjustable body. Also hidden away is a swivel/pivot hook for hanging the light if necessary. • HH340 Workshop Inspection Wand: a super-strong magnetic base with a 120-degree five-position adjustable head that is thin enough to reach into tight spaces where the others can’t. LED Autolamps states that the flexibility built into these lamps ensures your hands are on the task with the light exactly where you need it. They are perfect for a workshop, breakdown, vehicle, 4x4, marine, camping, home or anywhere you need instant lighting, added LED Autolamps. LED Autolamps also mentioned that its latest 2022 catalogue didn’t arrive in time for the show, but is now available to add to your next LED Autolamps order. The new catalogue contains 232 pages of new and existing products with comprehensive and concise information, a handy Function and Application contents page, and a part number Index for easy navigation. The catalogue is also available on LED Autolamps’ website to view or download. “The uncertainty felt by all over the last two years is now eclipsed by the success of the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo,” Ashley said. “The refreshing change of showcasing our latest products in person and on full display was not only exciting but a positive move forward for our future. “The Best Stand Award was also a nice surprise and recognition for all our hard work.” For further information, visit www.ledautolamps.com for the details of your local distributor or call LED Autolamps on 03 9466 7075.

MINISTER SUKKAR RECOGNISED

The AAAA Board has conferred upon Minister Michael Sukkar a special recognition award for achieving national legislative reform for the benefit of the automotive industry and Australian consumers

At the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet, the AAAA took a moment to formally acknowledge Federal Assistant Treasurer, the Honourable Michael Sukkar. Minister Sukkar was celebrated for his instrumental role in the passing of the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Bill. The Bill was passed by the Senate into law in June last year and the new scheme will take effect from 1 July this year. The law will make it illegal for car companies to withhold information from qualified independent mechanics. This will keep the cost of replacement parts, vehicle maintenance and repair affordable and create fair and open competition in our industry. “Interestingly it was at this very dinner in 2009, that we launched the Choice of Repairer Campaign,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said. “After 13 long years of fighting for this outcome we should congratulate ourselves as an industry for our vision, for our commitment and our resilience. “We never lost faith throughout the campaign and despite how big the battle and how hard the fight, we kept going. “And we have collectively created a legacy that will help secure the future of our great industry. “But we must also recognise that this Law wouldn’t have been possible without political leadership to make it a reality. “Right from the beginning, Minister Sukkar was a champion of this issue – he had supported his local independent mechanic for decades and in his own words – it didn’t matter which car he owned, he always took it to the same repairer because they were trusted by Michael and his extended family. “He knew this was about consumer choice, about supporting small business and eventually of course, about keeping car service and repair affordable. “And that is no small feat – lots of MPs struggled to understand data sharing. “We met with so many from all sides of politics and worked with eight different competition or small business Ministers – and while many were supportive, Michael Sukkar accepted that the system needed fixing and he championed the cause. “We cannot, and should not, underestimate how hard this was to guide through the political and bureaucratic hurdles of government. “It took a great deal of courage and commitment - firstly, to get the Morrison Government to commit to legislation, then to get it drafted and finally to argue the legislation through Cabinet requiring the sign off of 12 other Ministers. “We give our political leaders a pretty hard time, but we do need to recognise and acknowledge outstanding vision and leadership when we see it. “The AAAA Board of Directors felt strongly that it was time to recognise that we wouldn’t be where we are today if not for the leadership of Michael Sukkar.” The Minister’s Chief of Staff, Barmak Amini, accepted the award on behalf of Michael Sukkar while the Minister addressed the audience through a video message. “Thank you for this very special recognition award,” Minister Sukkar said. “In accepting this award, I would like to acknowledge the crucial role of you, the AAAA and the independent service and repair sector have played in getting these reforms across the line, particularly to Stuart Charity and his team for the outstanding work that they have done in supporting me. “You made it clear that the previous voluntary policy arrangements with manufacturers around sharing service and repair information just weren’t working. “Independent repairers were being left without the information they needed to able to do their jobs, and around one in 10 cars being taken into repair workshops were being affected by a lack of access to service and repair information. “It was a long road, but we are close to the finish line with the mandatory scheme set to commence on the 1st of July this year. “The new mandatory scheme is world leading legislation which will require car manufacturers to share service and repair information with independent repairers at fair market price. “Under these reforms, car owners will be able to go to the repairers of their choice without worrying about whether they have the information to do the job. “It will level the playing field for independent repairers and give Australians ultimately more choice over where they service and repair their car. “I was also pleased to recently announce the appointment of the newly established, industry led, Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority to administer the scheme and a $250,000 grant to the Authority in order to establish an online portal to facilitate access to the information. “The success of this scheme wouldn’t have been possible without the industry support, and I want to thank all of the industry leaders for their support to make this happen and to have the reforms in practice. “Thank you again, I am very grateful for this award.” For more information about the Awards, visit www.aftermarketawards.com.au

MICHELLE VIZZUTTI HONOURED AT AAAE

Michelle has been recognised for her 30 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the AAAA

At the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet, the AAAA was pleased to announce a special recognition award for one of its most dedicated and long-serving staff members, Michelle Vizzutti. “The Board, staff and members of the AAAA were very, very fortunate that 30 years ago Michelle Vizzutti made the decision to take on a casual role helping out at the business where her sister Kelly worked,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said. “Back then the AAAA was led by David Wright and leased office space at Monash University in Clayton. We were a pretty small affair then with the Executive Director the only full-time employee supported by part time administration and bookkeeping staff. “Once Kelly decided to move on, Michelle took over her role, and the rest as they say is history. Michelle grew with the AAAA business, moving from part time to full time in 1998, being promoted a number of times over the years with her current role being Manger Administration and Major Events. “Everyone that knows Michelle absolutely adores her. She is such an amazing, selfless, dedicated and giving person that genuinely cares about people. She has taken so many of our staff over the years under her wing to mentor them in work and in life and many of those relationships remain strong even after people move on. She is also loved and admired by the Board and membership and works tirelessly to ensure the AAAA ship remains on course, no matter what is being thrown our way. “Put simply, Michelle is the heart and soul of the AAAA. I have worked alongside her for 16 years and I can say confidently that we wouldn’t have achieved what we have without her. Not only does she keep the office running efficiently, but she also is the person that works night and day for months to enable events such as this banquet, this morning’s breakfast and the entire awards program and Expo to run so seamlessly. It really is an amazing achievement.” As part of the Award, Michelle received a travel voucher for $4,000 so she can finally take a welldeserved holiday. “Being recognised for something like this is right out of my comfort zone,” Michelle said. “Under Stuart’s management I have been extremely lucky to have been given great opportunities including managing the Australian pavilion at Automechanika Frankfurt. “I am also very fortunate to be part of a hardworking and professional team past and present. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to say that they love coming to work most days.

The product received the Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product Award in the 4WD category

CoolDrive Auto Parts’ Hulk 4X4 Adjustable Vehicle Door Step was named as one of the Most Innovative New Aftermarket Products at the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo (AAAE). At the Expo – where CoolDrive displayed its expansive offering and expertise across multiple stands – the Hulk 4X4 Adjustable Vehicle Door Step stole the show, claiming top honours in the 4WD category. “We are thrilled that the Hulk 4X4 Adjustable Vehicle Door Step has been recognised by the aftermarket industry for its innovative features and functionality,” CoolDrive Auto Parts Product Manager, Ben Fraser, said. “The Hulk 4X4 Adjustable Vehicle Door Step is a product that was engineered to innovate. Our team saw a product commonly used by off road enthusiasts and improved on it in nearly every aspect. “Since its launch, it has quickly become one of the most popular lines in the rapidly expanding Hulk 4X4 range.” The Hulk 4X4 Adjustable Door Step is the only patented product of its kind that universally works on both the front and back doors of most vehicles, giving its users more access to the roof. With its long extendable platform, it allows for a safe, flat grip, all while being strong, yet compact and easy to transport. The team at Hulk 4X4 are said to be enthusiasts themselves, understanding what the industry wants and needs, ensuring the product range responds and expands in line with the latest trends and customers’ needs. CoolDrive almost took home a second accolade from AAAE, with its stand one of the finalists for the “Best Stand Over 36sqm” award. The expansive stand had dedicated displays for each of CoolDrive’s own brands – Hulk 4X4 outdoor accessories, Jaylec electrical and rotating products, Jayair air conditioning products, Jayrad engine cooling components, AFI engine management components, Aunger automotive accessories, Bremtec Brakes and Ignite lighting. CoolDrive also had a dedicated Racer Industries stand, where it showcased the motor racing parts and components available from Australia’s leading motorsport store. GUD IMPRESSES AT AAAE

The GUD team brought all of its brands together at AAAE

When GUD made its latest acquisition of AutoPacific Group in January 2022, the challenge was laid down: showcase the GUD portfolio journey and demonstrate the power of bringing all brands together at the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo. In April this is exactly what the team from across the GUD network presented at the Expo – sixteen iconic and instantly recognisable brands in the GUD stable and over 50 products on display were all anchored around a brand-new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series that was decked out and tricked up for the show and connected to a Cruisemaster trailer fitted with an Auto Ride Hide system. Among the “new news” on the stand was: • Four new bull bars from East Coast Bullbars, all specifically designed for the LC300. • The new Rola Ridge Mount system for mounting flat trays to the roof of vehicles as well as a prototype on fully equipped canopies. • A brand-new Uneek 4x4 Crawler Bar designed for the LC300. The frontal protection steel bumper was accessorised with two pairs of

Narva Driving Light as well as an integrated

Narva Light Bar and DRLs. • Upgraded brake disc rotors from Disc Brakes

Australia which had been made specifically for the new LandCruiser. The stand was not all about “new news” either, with GUD stating the impact and inherent strength the collective brands have and how they complement each other was clear. From all around vehicle protection, to lighting, power management, trailer manufacture and maintenance and cargo, there were products everywhere. There were still more aspects that were either not on the vehicle or not visible. Upgraded clutches, although not relevant to the Landcruiser 300, were very relevant to the 70 Series LandCruiser and Clutch Services Australia showcased the popular Extreme Outback Extra Heavy-Duty Upgrade, which it says is the clutch system of choice for a modified 70 series. Similarly, Ryco provide filters for a variety of uses throughout the vehicle. Although not obvious from the outside, they play a critical role in the ongoing running of the vehicle. Ryco filters are developed and tested in Australia to withstand Australian conditions. The back of the stand showed off a CSM Service Body that had been effectively accessorised with Narva Work Lamps, a Projecta Invertor and Rola Ladder Rack, demonstrating the ultimate service body. STAND-OUT STANDS TURN HEADS

The AAAE exhibitors turned plenty of heads, with the stands of two companies in particular singled out for recognition

As part of the Australian Auto Aftermarket Excellence Awards Banquet, Awards were bestowed for Best Stand 36sqm and under, and Best Stand 36sqm and over. These awards, recognising the best and most innovative stands of the Expo, were presented to LED Autolamps and ZF in Oceania respectively. In deciding the winner, the judges considered the overall presentation of the stand including design, construction, layout of product, use of colours, lighting, signage and attention to detail. LED Autolamps National Sales Manager, Ashley Piper, explained that LED Autolamps’ stand required an all hands on deck effort. “It is nice to have the recognition, we put a lot of work into the stand. Our stand builder had shut down – it has been hard the past couple of years for the stand builders, so when we found we had no stand builder we had to put a lot of work in to get it up and running,” Ashley said. “Our product range moves quite fast, so we had to update all of the lighting which is a big job. Everybody came together to make this all happen. “(Being at the Expo) has been like a bit of a family reunion; it is really good because you get to see all of your customers in the space of three days which would usually take you about six months to see that amount of people. “Being a member of the AAAA helps give us a lot of access to industry knowledge, and support programs within Australia and overseas,” Ashley added. Head of Oceania for ZF, Mark Lowe, said it was fantastic to be back at AAAE to showcase ZF’s commitment to and expertise within the Oceania region. “What a fantastic honour for the ZF Oceania stand to be named Best stand over 36sqm at the recent AAAE,” Mark said. “With all stands automatically entered into the Best Stand categories, and with over 210 exhibitors at the event, we are thrilled that ours stood out and was recognised with this accolade.

Best Stand 36sqm or less: LED Autolamps (Aust) Pty Ltd

Best Stand over 36 sqm: ZF Services Australia Pty Ltd

“The ZF team worked incredibly hard when planning out the stand to ensure that not only did it clearly communicate our brands and products, but that it was also visually pleasing and welcoming to visitors.” For more on the Awards, visit www.aftermarketawards.com.au

COLLISION REPAIR EXPO CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

The leading industry trade show for the smash repair sector was a must attend event for all workshops

The 2022 Collision Repair Expo brought together the best of the collision and repair industry under one roof at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Expo, co-located with the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo, featured the nation’s most comprehensive exhibition of body finishing materials, crash repair equipment and tools all in one location. The collision repair segment of the Australian automotive aftermarket industry is constantly dealing with emerging technologies and repair techniques along with new and exotic materials. With this in mind, a strong focus in the event’s planning was on ensuring that visitors were able to experience the latest innovative products and services in the industry as well as high quality education and networking opportunities. With the theme ’The Future of Collision Repair is Here’, and debuting a range of fantastic new initiatives and features, the Expo was an unmissable event. Visitors saw the latest collision repair equipment, body finishing materials, tools and accessories, new technology and trends. In addition to viewing the industry’s best products and talking to Australia’s finest suppliers, repairers were also able to attend valuable seminars designed to help grow their businesses. For the first time, the Expo incorporated a standalone seminar stage on the CRE show floor, which delivered a free comprehensive training and education program sponsored by I-CAR and displayed incredible live demonstrations from the onsite Lowbake Spray Booth via a big screen. The show was sponsored by SAPE Group, a leading Australian distributor for Glasurit and Baslac paints for BASF Australia and also supplies a vast array of collision repair equipment and consumables to vehicle repair facilities around Australia. SUPERCAR STARS ENTERTAIN AT AAAE

On the Friday afternoon of the Expo, a trio of star Supercar steerers visited the Expo

Tickford Racing’s James Courtney and Thomas Randle were joined by Tim Slade of the CoolDrive/ Blanchard Racing Team for a special panel hosted by Paul Marinelli on the Friday afternoon of the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo. As part of the panel, the trio discussed a range of topics including James Courtney’s 500th round milestone, the outcome of the 2021 F1 Championship, the incoming Gen 3 Supercars, the return of the Adelaide 500, and racing at the Australian Grand Prix – which was being held in Melbourne that same weekend “It has been amazing,” said James of his milestone, “there are so many amazing stories throughout that time and people have been asking me what is the one thing that stood out and for me, it is all the relationships there have been with some amazing people and opportunities I wouldn’t have been able to do or people I wouldn’t have been able to meet if I wasn’t doing what I do. “I still wake up every morning and pinch myself. I still can’t believe I get paid to race a car; I have never had to work a day in my life really.” Also enjoying a special milestone at the AGP was Thomas Randle, who celebrated his birthday on the Thursday by sharing his Supercar with none other than two-time World F1 Champion, Fernando Alonso. “It was pretty cool to be driving a Supercar at the Grand Prix on my birthday, but the big highlight was that I got to have Fernando Alonso drive my car and take me for some hot laps,” Thomas said. “It was really cool, and it was the first time he had driven a Supercar.” On the incoming Gen 3 car, Tim Slade and James spoke about the progress and reasons behind its introduction. “There are a number of reasons why we are going to what we are going to. Essentially one of them is to make the racing better as at the moment it is quite hard to follow close on fast tracks because you lose the aerodynamic grip you have on the front of the car when you are close to a car in front and the front tyres get hot and you drop off, so it is hard to pass. So, they have changed some things with this new spec car to try and fix that,” Tim explained. “Cost is another big thing, to try and get the cost lower and the running cost lower too so it is more cost effective to the teams and also more road relevant as well. If you look at the current Mustang it looks quite different to the road going version so the new gen cars, the Camaro and Mustang, will basically look the same as the road car.” “It is a lot lighter as well which will be good. It is also a bit wider and looks a bit meatier and beefier and I think it has a better look to it. It looks like the road car, so that is good for ‘racing on Sunday, selling on Monday,” added James. Also discussed was the impending comeback of the Adelaide 500 – a topic close to Tim’s heart as a South Australian. “South Aussie or not, I think the whole industry is super excited to have that back on our calendar. I think it is the best event of the year, and the State really gets behind it. It is a mega event, at its prime (it had) 270,000 people over four days,” Tim said. “We all love going there, the track is super fun and I guess it is physically taxing as well. It will probably be a bit easier having it at the end of the year after a full year of racing rather than as the first race of the year. “The location of the event being in the heart of the city is pretty amazing, and for me being a South Australian I have a lot of memories of gong to the track with my dad as a little whippersnapper, so it probably means a little bit more to myself and the other South Australian drivers.” For more on the activities that were undertaken at the Expo, please visit www.autoaftermarketexpo.com.au

VERY SUCCESSFUL AAAE FOR BURSON AUTO PARTS

Australia’s Burson Auto Parts has enjoyed another highly successful Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo

Burson Auto Parts welcomed thousands of trade customers to its huge and well-equipped stand across the three-day event in April. With areas allocated to Burson Equipment, including the latest in diagnostic and general workshop equipment, the stand also provided examples of service parts along with abundant product information. This combined with advice from what equated to several hundred years of experience from the Burson teams manning the stand, ensured that every visit was a worthwhile one. The stand also featured examples of the world leading Burson Auto Parts range of Hunter wheel service equipment, high tech inspection lanes, along with a selection of the company’s ever growing, high quality private brand automotive parts ranges. Adding a racey theme to the stand was the Burson Auto Parts Peugeot TCR car that enabled motorsport fans to get a good close up look at this state-of-the-art international race car as raced by Ben Bargwanna in the TCR Australia Series. The Burson Auto Parts stand also offered customers a good place to relax while walking through this huge trade fair, with supplies of refreshing filtered water and a full barista service on duty throughout the event to keep energy levels high. Ranking as a finalist in the AAAA Most Innovative New E-Commerce Solution Award for 2022, the Burson EzyParts online ordering and quoting solution was also on display at the Burson Auto Parts stand, which proved to be of major interest to many trade customers. “It was very clear to all of us that our customers have been eager for face-to-face trade exhibitions to return given the numbers of customers we welcomed throughout the three days,” Burson Auto Parts General Manager, Frank Petrucelli, said. “It was good to see so many people from the smallest independent workshops to the largest chains at the AAA Expo, along with so many of our local and international suppliers. It had been too long and it is full power ahead from here. “It was also a privilege to address the Gala Dinner attendees and deliver a message on behalf of myself and the entire Burson team.” To contact your local Burson Auto Parts store, call 1300 BURSON (287 766) or visit www.burson.com.au

NEW-FORMAT SEMINAR SERIES A HIT AT AAAE

For the first time, many of the Expo’s seminars were brought down to the show floor

The comprehensive and free-to-attend seminar program held over the three days of the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo (AAAE) provided unparalleled education opportunities for automotive businesses. For the first time, the Expo – proudly sponsored by Repco – incorporated a stand-alone seminar stage on the show floor in a move which proved hugely popular with show attendees and exhibitors. A hand-picked selection of respected industry experts offered practical knowledge on the topics that matter most in engaging and thoughtprovoking seminars which were designed for everyone from workshop owners and managers who wanted to gain an edge in business, through to automotive technicians looking to upskill their knowledge and further their careers. Amongst the line-up was the highly anticipated “Our skills shortage: attracting great staff and keeping them” seminar which featured a solutions-focused panel discussion by AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates; mycar Chief Executive Officer and AAAA Board Member, Adam Pay; Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer, David Fraser; and the Automotive Dealer Association’s Chief Executive Officer, James Voortman. Another topic that inspired workshop owners was the “How high performing workshops use data to boost performance” presentation by Ben Selwyn of ACA Research and AAAA Head of Membership and Marketing, Tiffany Conway. Providing insights into how workshops can use data to make better decisions to improve their performance, this seminar proved popular and included the demonstration of a number of the AAAA’s data tools, which attendees also had the opportunity to try for themselves throughout the show at the AAAA expo stand. Another banner topic was the new Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme, which will become Law on 1 July 2022. AAAA’s Lesley Yates presented the ‘Fair and Open Competition in the Automotive Industry’ seminar, explaining how the new law will work, how it will increase competition and choice for consumers, and how it will guarantee fair and open competition in the industry. Meanwhile, NASTF Executive Director, Donny Seyfer, provided an exclusive firstlook demonstration of the new secure data release model that will be used by Australian automotive businesses come July 1 in the ‘Demonstrating Australia’s Mandatory Data Sharing Release Model’ seminar. In keeping with its theme, ‘The Future is Here,’ the Expo also presented a number of educational opportunities around Electric Vehicles, including the “Electric Vehicles Trends and Opportunities” presentation hosted by AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity. This seminar discussed the answers to a wide array of questions in this space, such are EVs a business opportunity or will they result in a smaller independent repair network? Are EVs the end of our industry as we know it or a new beginning? When will customers start asking if you can work on their EV? What should you do to prepare? And what can government do to support you and future EV owners? Workshop success and customer service was also addressed as part of the seminar schedule, with ‘The Workshop Whisperer’ Rachael Evans presenting “Five steps to workshop success” addressing the biggest mistakes workshops make and providing the action steps you need to take to grow a profitable auto repair shop. Each seminar ran for approximately 45 minutes and entry was free of charge to all registered visitors for the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo and Collision and Repair Expo. MANDATORY DATA SHARING LAWS A REALITY

AAAA explains new laws at AAAE

After years of presenting seminars at various Expos and Conferences about the AAAA’s campaign for mandatory data sharing laws, the Association’s Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates, was excited to explain how the newly passed laws would work to an enthusiastic audience at the recent Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo. Lesley outlined that the new law was introduced into Parliament on the March 24, 2021, and that the House of Representatives passed it in May before the Senate ratified it in June. She told the audience that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) can enforce it and penalties of up to $10 million apply for car manufacturers and importers in breach of the law; and that auto manufacturers and importers must abide by the law from July 1, 2022. She explained the new law amends the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 to “establish a scheme that mandates that service and repair information provided to car dealership networks and manufacturer preferred repairs be made available for independent repairs and registered training organisations to purchase at a fair market price; and Copyright Act 1968 to provide that the statutory licensing scheme for educational institutions does not apply to such information.” Lesley highlighted that the principle is to provide fair competition in that independent repairers get access to all information required to diagnose, service and repair a vehicle. The scheme includes access to security information and Electric Vehicles. She said there is a clear definition of fair and reasonable commercial terms and also a statement about accessible format, meaning “real-time or today.” Lesley also told the audience that the law outlines the establishment of an industry body to ‘operationalise’ the scheme, explaining that the Government has appointed the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority Limited (AASRA) as Scheme Adviser for the mandatory scheme. Lesley outlined AASRA’s core functions as providing information about the operation of the Scheme such as where to access repair information as well as subscription costs; and facilitating access to safety and security information for Australian repairers and registered training organisations (RTOs). She said vehicle manufacturers obligations are: • Offering to supply information used for conducting diagnostic, service or repair activities for scheme vehicles to all Australian repairers and scheme RTOs; • Charging no more than the fair market value for the information;

EXPERT UNVEILS AASRA PLATFORM

Donny Seyfer took the covers off Australia’s Mandatory Data Sharing Model at AAAE

Donny Seyfer, Executive Director of the Americanbased National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF), travelled from the US to unveil the new portal of the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority Limited (AASRA) at the recent AAA Expo. Donny has more than 40 years of automotive experience as a technician, manager and service consultant. For the past five years Donny has held the role of Executive Director of the NASTF, which is a cooperative effort among the automotive service industry, the equipment and tool industry and automobile manufacturers to ensure that automotive service professionals employed outside the OEM franchise system in the US and Canada have the information, training, and tools needed to properly diagnose and repair today’s high-tech vehicles. Across two seminar sessions, Donny shared his considerable experience from the US, and demonstrated the system that will support Australia’s soon to be released Secure Data Release Model (SDRM). The Australian platform will be based on the NASTF model, a tried-and-true SDRM system that has been effectively facilitating the secure transfer of diagnostic and reprogramming information between US vehicle manufacturers and independent repairers for over a decade. The new SDRM will also provide repairers with access to immobiliser, pin and keycode information plus electric and high voltage vehicle repair information. “The NASTF platform was chosen because, over many years in service, the system has been continually improved to make the process more streamlined, easier and secure for technicians who use the platform regularly,” Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said. Australia’s Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme will come into effect on July 1 this year after a tireless campaign championed by the AAAA on behalf of the country’s independent repairers. • Supplying scheme information (immediately in most circumstances) once the repairer has paid the agreed price; and • Restricting access to safety and security information to individuals who meet specified access criteria. She said AASRA would work as per the following: • AASRA members will pay a fee to be validated as “fit and proper” with the definition of such included in the scheme rules. A validation fee will also be required for ‘EV professionals.’ • The AASRA registration process will be recognised by participating carmakers – their system will ‘know’ what level of information you are validated to access. • Carmakers will earmark a small portion of their new revenue stream back to AASRA to assist with operating expenses, system updates, and maintenance. For more information visit www.aaaa.com.au

Donny’s presentation, led by a clever Star Wars themed video to bring the audience up to date with Australia’s recently passed laws, took participants through how the NASTF model will be adapted to fulfill the needs of the Australian scheme. His 25-minute presentation was followed by a lively question session where audience members had their concerns answered. Complimenting Donny Seyfer’s sessions were further education opportunities surrounding the forthcoming law, including a Mandatory Data Sharing seminar by Lesley Yates, AAAA’s Director of Government Relations and Advocacy (see separate story above). THE NEXT BIG CHALLENGE

With the Mandatory Data battle seemingly won, the Aftermarket industry’s next fight will be tackling skill shortages

Addressing the issue of skills shortages is looming as the next big challenge for the Automotive Aftermarket. AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates, says that the top concern on every recent survey that the AAAA has commissioned is the problem of not enough skilled technicians to fill available positions. Lesley led a panel discussion at the recent AAA Expo to address the issues surrounding skills shortages. She explained that the skills shortage is an industry wide issue and that on average every automotive business in the country has at least one vacancy. “It is particularly bad in WA and Queensland. Automotive jobs are constantly the most advertised in WA and Queensland, which is good data that we can use to show Governments because we have a hard time convincing them that we have a problem in our industry,” she said. David Fraser, Group Chief Executive Office of Capricorn, told those in attendance that they can download the State of the Nation Report off the Capricorn website for useful data on the topic. “Over 2,000 people participated so it is a good sample of the workshop community. It revealed that 53 percent of mechanical workshops are saying that this is the number one issue in their business today, that is up from 44 percent in 2020. There is a huge leakage of skilled labour and businesses are struggling to attract new talent into their businesses,” he explained. “That means businesses are having to turn work away which has a significant impact on profitability. It is causing the business owner to have to do more himself or herself. “It also means that your existing employees become fatigued and that leads to other issues around mental health.” James Voortman, CEO of Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), does not always see eye-to-eye with the AAAA, but skills shortages is one thing that the two organisations are united on. “Statistics we have show that 97 percent of dealers are suffering with a shortage of technicians,” James said. He indicated that it is taking between six and 12 months for his members to fill those positions. “I think that it is important to note that we are not the only industry going through this and that makes this skills crisis worse because we are competing with other industries,” James said. “We are really going to have to do a better job of telling governments not only how important technicians are to this industry but also to the country and to the safe fleet that we pride ourselves on.” Adam Pay, Managing Director of MyCar, believes that lack of government action around skills shortages is not the only factor contributing to the problem. “We talk about under investment from a government, but we have kind of done this to ourselves a little bit too,” Adam said. “I have heard workshop owners actually ask the question, what if I pay an apprentice and they are not productive for the first six months… I just can’t believe that attitude.” He said the MyCar staff turnover rate usually runs at around 28 percent and at the moment it is in the mid-30s, with a vacancy rate of 10 percent. He stressed that stealing technicians from opposition businesses was not a long-term solution to the problem. “Every time we hire a technician at MyCar somebody else, somewhere is hurting and that is not great for the industry,” Adam said. He said that while the industry is adaptive and able to cope in the short-term, he sees it coming to a head down the track. “Without a full complement of staff, we struggle to reach customer expectations and the team members that are left in store are feeling the pain every day. It’s not sustainable. I have seen statistics that show there are 27,000 more positions available than there are skilled people. “It’s going to take all of us in the industry to do something about it; it is not just a MyCar issue. If we all do something about it then we will make a difference.” All of the panelists believe that education and changing the perception of the industry to an exciting career path is a big part of the answer in the long-term. “The future is about EVs and computers. We need to get the future generation and their Mum’s and Dad’s to understand where the industry is going and why it is such an exciting time to be a part of it,” David Fraser said. Adam Pay says it is also about making sure staff are adequately rewarded, which means you must be charging your customers the correct rates. “It comes down to educating business owners to make sure that they are running profitable businesses… then they can pay competitive rates and they should, because if they don’t someone else will,” Adam said. James Voortman says the solution is not just up to governments. “Businesses themselves need to be proactive and work with their communities and local schools to encourage the next generation to get excited about the industry,” James concluded. INEOS SHAKING THINGS UP WITH GRENADIER

Justin Hocevar outlined how INEOS Automotive is doing things differently at AAAE

The concept for INEOS Automotive’s Grenadier was driven off the announcement that Jaguar Land Rover was ceasing production of the LandRover Defender. The INEOS Grenadier is a rugged and uncompromising off-roader, built from the ground up to meet the most extreme demands of INEOS customers. It was created to fulfil the vision of adventurer and INEOS Group Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Inspired by legendary working off-roaders, the Grenadier will offer no-frills utilitarianism and be a capable, durable and reliable working tool to conquer the world’s harshest environments. The Grenadier is consciously counter-trend, a vehicle defined by its job description in a world of ever more homogenised SUVs – whether that job is in Kenya or Colorado, or right here on home turf in the Australian outback. The design of the Grenadier is a clear exercise in ‘function over form,’ with everything designed to reflect the utilitarian functionality of the vehicle. The primary focus of the design is to provide the highest levels of off-road capability, class-leading towing and payload capacity. The purpose-built Grenadier is expected to appeal to a broad audience across the world, unified by their need for a vehicle that will do a job of work and be capable of tackling the toughest environments. INEOS Automotive Head of Region – APAC, Justin Hocevar, spoke at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo’s combined APMEC, 4WD Council and PRTC cocktail function, outlining to presentation attendees how INEOS and its Grenadier vehicle are working with the aftermarket in a departure from OE norms. “The vehicle fulfils the needs of everything from landowners and forestry workers to ski operators and tradespeople, those with dependence on a utilitarian, uncompromised 4x4. On the other end of the scale, the vehicle is used for leisure to tow boats, caravans and the like, through to diehard 4x4ers and overlanders,” Justin said. “Of course, there will be a range of OE accessories, but we don’t expect to service the vast requirements of all of these customers. “As such, what we are hoping to do is provide the blank canvas that aftermarket partners can work with to provide ultimate solutions for customers. “We have already started working through agreements with a few aftermarket companies in Australia and also overseas, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be formal agreements, we are also looking at informal relationships where we can collaborate together. “We want to put our cards on the table and say, this is what we are doing, and here are maybe some areas that you the aftermarket want to work on, and tell us if there is anything else you want to do. “And if that means you need access to our production tryout before we release our final production car, let us know and we will do our best. “If it means working together on a specific customer requirement that you have, let’s do that. We would love to hear from you.” Another area INEOS is steering away from the norm is in its retailing model. “INEOS retail partners will be responsible for the display of vehicles, facilitate test drives, support customer deliveries and importantly provide the necessary aftersales care,” Justin said. “Partners will receive a straight-forward commission from INEOS Automotive which ensures pricing consistency and limits the financial investment of a partner to engage with INEOS Automotive.” INEOS aims for the majority of customers in Australia and New Zealand to always be within a reasonable distance of an official sales and service location. The retail partners will form the backbone of the service network in the country, with additional geographical coverage provided by a selection of hand-picked INEOS-accredited Bosch Car Service outlets. PREPARING THE INDUSTRY FOR EVS

Liberal party politician says governments should support EV infrastructure and let the vehicle market growth take care of itself

Victorian Shadow Minister for Energy and Renewables, Craig Ondarchie – a strong ally of the automotive industry and the Aftermarket in particular – believes that governments need to focus more on supporting the automotive aftermarket industry to transition to EVs. “This whole discussion to date has been about the environment and it’s not just about the environment, it’s about the automotive sector and how you deal with that,” Ondarchie said. Ondarchie announced at the recent AAA Expo that should a Matthew Guy-led liberal party come to power in the Victorian November election that he will grant the AAAA $3 million to oversee a panel designed to progress EV training for the service and repair and aftermarket industry (see News story on page 7). Also at the Expo he further outlined his belief of what governments – both at a state and federal level – need to be doing on the EV scene to facilitate its introduction. “There are four things that governments have been talking about to increase the take up of EVs in this country, one is incentivise the front end, let’s subsidise people buying electric vehicles to increase the sales. That looks good for government, but the problem is that argument is being driven by bicycle-riding bureaucrats and it is not always the right answer,” he said. “I don’t know that anyone who can afford a $170,000 vehicle should get a tax subsidy for that. “The second option is about encouraging and preparing the backend to be able to deal with EVs. I’m talking about ensuring we have the right infrastructure, like ensuring that we have enough power as we move away from coal-based electricity, ensuring that the network can cope with it. “We need to make sure we have infrastructure around charging stations, and we also need to think about what we do with batteries as they drop their efficiency and come out of their useful life for EVs.” “How do we ensure that our road network is more efficient to optimise the value of EVs? “The third thing that government could do is get out the way and allow the market to take care of itself. I think that governments have two roles – they can either help you or get out of your way. “Or finally, governments could disincentivise people from buying ICE vehicles and as the owner of some nice vehicles I am certainly not an advocate of that!” Ondarchie says that it is inevitable that governments will get involved in the EV sector. “It is a hot topic and they get to open a charging station at the MCG. They are going to get involved, but the key is what are they going to get involved in,” he said. He believes that governments need to assist in the building of infrastructure and should let the actual vehicle market take care of itself. “I think they should be focusing much more on the backend, the infrastructure, rather than driving people to purchase these vehicles. The market will take care of itself,” he said. “The challenge is that if governments incentivise people to keep buying EVs, then the infrastructure just won’t cope with it. “For example, the peak electricity use of the day is currently midday when business and industry are operating. That is going to shift to 5.00pm in the afternoon when everyone gets home and plugs their EVs in. “Can the electricity infrastructure deal with that? I don’t know… there is a lot of work to do there. “The problem is that if governments go down the incentivising path and get caught up in a tailspin to reach their 2030 and 2050 targets, we are going to have some trouble right across this country. “Then we will go into a scenario where people will be trying to deal with that backend trouble. So, I think that there is something that we can do to deal with that now. My preferred option is that government, both state and federal, should focus on that backend sooner rather than later. “The government needs to look at the infrastructure of charging stations and where to put them. There hasn’t been a long-term plan. “What do we do with inner Melbourne, for example, where people are living in high-rise buildings that are 50 or 60 years old? “The government should spend money on infrastructure and training and in reducing tax in the backend, and let the market take care of itself in the rest.” Ondarchie is also flabbergasted with the current ALP-led Victorian Government’s tax on driving an EV. “There is an electric vehicle tax in this state and that is just bizarre,” he said. “We tax people who drive electric vehicles. Let me go on record as saying when I become the Minister later this year – that tax is gone! “We tax hybrid vehicles in this state as well. So, you get a tax on the overall kilometers that you travel, but you also pay the petrol excise! That just doesn’t make sense… let’s tax people who drive electric vehicles so that we can use the money to incentivise people to buy more electric vehicles. Someone has missed the point there!” He also indicated governments need to do a lot more in the training of future technicians for EVs and also in the re-training of existing mechanics to prepare them for the EV onslaught. “Another thing that government can do is to ensure that your market is ready from an education and training perspective,” he said. “Are you ready to deal with the onset of EVs, particularly in the Aftermarket? “The conversations I have been having at the Expo have been about trying to get skilled employees. If that is a problem now with the internal combustion engine, how are we going to deal with that when EVs start to come into the market in numbers? So, there is a fair amount of work to do. “There is a complete lack of collaboration between government departments and ministers. “I think that governments need to ensure that industry and education have a role in the decisionmaking.” He also warns independent automotive workshops need to put aside their competition with each other for the betterment of the industry as a whole. “Your industry should collaborate. If there is expensive equipment to be bought maybe we do this amongst a number of repairers, not just one. That can be achieved through the AAAA,” he explained. “Work things out together, even skills, and training. “The independents have an opportunity to lead this development through your organisation (the AAAA), particularly around skills and training, and particularly around R&D across the sector.” For more information, visit www.craigondarchie.com.au

IP EXPERT APPLAUDS AAAE

Professor Leanne Wiseman is lobbying for a mandatory data sharing scheme for agricultural machinery

Griffith University Professor of Law and ARC Future Fellow, Leanne Wiseman, has been a longtime supporter of the AAAA in its fight for fair competition in the automotive aftermarket. A long-time ally of the AAAA in the fight for this mandatory data sharing legislation, Professor Wiseman is not only a highly respected law Professor, but also Director of The Australian Repair Network and Associate Director of the Australian Centre for Intellectual Property in Agriculture (ACIPA). Professor Wiseman was in attendance at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo, paying particular attention to the presentations and education made available around the mandatory data sharing scheme for the automotive industry. “I decided to attend the Expo as I was very excited to hear Australia’s first right to repair law being presented by (AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy) Lesley Yates, and Lesley had also organised Donny Seyfer, the Executive Director of the America-based National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) to talk about America’s data sharing scheme,” Professor Wiseman said. “I was very interested to learn about the new scheme and the establishment of scheme advisor, the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Association (AASRA), at what is quite a monumental time for the industry with the scheme coming into force on July 1. “It was a really interesting expo, and it was the first in-person, large scale event I had attended for a couple of years since COVID. There were lots of opportunities to learn about the industry, the scheme with Lesley’s Open and Fair Competition in Australia seminar and Donny’s seminars on the American system, and also what is happening with electric vehicles and the challenges they are presenting. “It was a very informative visit, and extremely valuable to learn more about the Australian auto industry and how it has achieved the success it has in relation to having legislation passed and achieving regulatory reform in relation to fairer competition in the automotive aftermarket.” Professor Wiseman is championing similar reform for the farming industry. “The ACCC’s Agricultural Machinery Market Study Final Report was released on the 4th of May 2021 and recommended that agricultural machinery either be brought under the mandatory

data sharing scheme for automotive repair, or have its own standalone legislation to mandate the sharing of diagnostic software by agricultural machinery manufacturers to enable farmers to get the information they need to repair their tractors and farm equipment,” Professor Wiseman said. “On the 1st of December 2021, the final report of the Productivity Commission on the Right to Repair endorsed the ACCC findings that agricultural machinery should be brought under a similar data sharing scheme. “The National Farmers Federation also made a submission to the Productivity Commission showing its support for a right to repair scheme for agricultural machinery.” “So obviously it was helpful to gain a further understanding at the Expo of how the scheme is working and being developed in the automotive aftermarket, informing our work around what an agricultural right to repair scheme might look like, and how the existence of an independent authority such as AASRA would operate, as well as the overall merits and challenges associated with the scheme and how that would play out in respect to agricultural machinery. “Obviously, there is a lot of work to be done with the government as to how such a scheme will be implemented in the agricultural sector. “The Productivity Commission recommended that the scheme be introduced by the end of 2022, so it is important that the government starts to engage with these recommendations and starts to investigate a scheme around agricultural machinery repair. “The Australian Repair Network is bringing together stakeholders who are interested in right to repair to make sure these recommendations are implemented for the benefit of Australian farmers and the agricultural industry more generally. Anyone who is interested is invited to join or contact me with any questions.” For more information on The Australian Repair Network, visit www.griffith.edu.au/law-futures-centre/our-research/ repair-australia or contact Professor Wiseman on l.wiseman@griffith.edu.au

INDONESIA MINISTER VISITS AAAE

Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno was on-site at the Expo investigating partnership opportunities

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) was honoured that the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, took time out of his busy schedule while in Melbourne to visit the Indonesian Pavilion organised by the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia and Indonesian trade representatives in Australia at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo (AAAE). In speaking with Australian Aftermarket Magazine, Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno explained that Indonesia is keenly focused on the area of electric vehicles and renewable energy currently. “We are moving very rapidly into transitioning and pivoting to electric vehicles and eco systems and the supply chain from the raw materials for batteries; we have potentials all the way to the manufacturing,” Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said. “We are now having a lot of progress on electric motorcycles, and we are going to elevate that to four wheelers and also trucks and heavy equipment. “That is on the transportation side; on the energy generation side, the renewable energies, like neo thermals, wind, solar and also hydro plant, is really a huge area of focus. We are transitioning from fossil, hydrocarbon-based energy generators to more friendly and renewable energy. “We believe that our visions of making Bali only sell electric vehicles starting in 2030 will yield much faster conversion. I am now only using electric vehicles when I am in Bali. “More sustainable tourism will invite a lot of investments in the electric vehicles and electric mobility in general.” Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said he sees a lot of opportunities for Australia and Indonesia to work together in this space. “Australia has definitely strength in the technology part and the digital space, and we have the combined market of almost 300 million,” Dr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said. “We have the young demography, and I guess there is a lot of collaboration to create new jobs, and better-quality jobs, in the areas of new economy. “Post COVID there will be new economy that is focused on sustainability, and, in the past, we used to compete a lot, but now I think we need to pivot to collaborate, to have more collaborations and joint investments. “In the past Australian investors have come and invested in natural resources to export but now we invite Australian investors to invest in Indonesia not just to export, but also to develop local know how, technology transfers, knowledge transfers and also develop the market together so we can have a much higher value added. “I came (to the Expo) to support this country as an invitation for local businesses who want to open up market in Australia and other parts of the world. “Obviously small companies are local champions and government needs to be present and assist in opening up international markets. I want to acknowledge the key roles played by my colleague, the Minister of Trade of Indonesia and his team, in promoting trade with Indonesia. “We also are here to ensure that the bilateral trade, investment and tourism comprehensive partnership between Australia and Indonesia will continue to increase in the future.” For more information, visit www.kemlu.go.id/canberra/en
