DIAGNOSING AND RECTIFYING DISC BRAKE ROTOR ISSUES

In this article, Bendix offers advice on this important area

As a vital component of a vehicle’s braking system, discs or rotors are an item that should be regularly inspected for wear or damage, to ensure ongoing braking performance and safety. While this task will normally be undertaken by the local mechanic or brake specialist as part of a car’s regular servicing schedule, it pays for drivers to be mindful of the symptoms of brake rotor issues. Given the extreme conditions that brake rotors work under, including extreme heat, high loading and exposure to water, dirt and grit coming off road surfaces, it’s possible for these components to become compromised over time and in between servicing. An intuitive driver will likely pick-up some of the early indicators of rotor issues, allowing them to have the braking system checked by their workshop, to ensure optimum performance is restored as soon as possible. Bendix says the following is what you should look out for, along with detail on how to treat potential problems. Disc brake rotor warping

Warping is where the rotor surface becomes uneven – normally it is caused by excessive heat in the brakes. Through regular high-load braking situations, the rotors can become glazed from the brake pad materials rubbing off on the rotor at extreme temperatures. Extreme changes in temperatures can also cause warping, for example heavy braking followed by submersion in cold water, such as might be experienced off road when four-wheel driving. The symptoms of rotor warping could be as severe as brake pedal feedback during braking, jittery or inconsistent braking, vibration during braking, or more subtle indicators including excessive squealing when braking or a burning smell. Depending on the source of the problem, the rotors can be machined, a process that uses a lathe to refinish the surface of the rotor, returning it to a flat surface. If the warping is too severe or the rotor is too thin (in the case of previous machining), the rotor will need replacing. Cracked rotor

In short, causes that can lead to rotor cracking are similar to those that cause rotor warping: excessive heat and extreme temperature changes – but also throw another element into the equation, the quality of the materials used in making the rotor, as well as the manufacturing process. A rotor that does not have the correct metallurgy (the science of producing and purifying metal) will be more prone to cracking – a poor manufacturing process is also a major contributor to rotor cracks. Typically, cheap rotors that have had less development and manufacturing applied, will be more likely to crack. For the driver, symptoms to look out for include low frequency vibration during braking and more intense braking shudder, depending on the size of the crack(s). The solution for cracked rotors? There’s only one: replacement. The Bendix rotor range

As a specialist producer of braking systems and market-leader in this field, Bendix explains that it offers a range of rotor solutions to suit passenger cars and performance vehicles with its ‘Euro+ Disc Rotors’ and ‘Ultimate Sports and Performance Disc Rotor’. It says these quality products have been designed and developed to exacting standards, using high quality feed materials and the latest manufacturing processes, reducing the likelihood of rotor warping or cracking. High Carbon Metallurgy

Common to both ranges is Bendix’s Hight Carbon Metallurgy – this technology improves noise dampening characteristics and heat dissipation. The higher the carbon formulation, the better the rotor can withstand elevated operating temperatures; another benefit is higher wear resistance and durability, while reducing the chance of warping. SWIFTFIT protection

For efficiency of installation (no requirement for pre-cleaning), Bendix rotors feature ‘SWIFTFIT’ coating, an advanced protective zinc coating that helps to protect against corrosion. With uncoated rotors, corrosion can impact the rotor mating with the wheel hub face over time and create vibrations. Drivers who suspect that their rotors may be suffering from warping or cracking, should organise an inspection of their brakes by a professional as soon as possible. SMART SPARE PARTS FOR INTELLIGENT SUSPENSIONS

Bilstein explains the potential of the DampTronic variants

The things that surround us are becoming more and more intelligent – especially in automotive engineering. Bilstein says the keyword here is: active suspensions. “Depending on the situation or the driver’s wishes, they oscillate between dynamic and comfortable, sometimes with more or less intermediate levels or damping force spread. This provides the perfect driving experience and safety,” Bilstein Academy Global Training Manager, Dimitris Kouvaras, said. The other side of the coin is that if shock absorbers for active suspensions are defective or worn out, replacement is significantly more expensive than conventional “materials.” Owners of older cars in particular are therefore looking for affordable alternatives to original parts. Fair value replacements from the aftermarket are significantly cheaper, but rarely support active control, says Bilstein, which explains this turns an active high-tech suspension into a passive one. Bilstein says that garages that want to offer their customers a better solution can, however, fall back on the Bilstein B4 and B6 aftermarket shock absorbers with the DampTronic add-on. It explains these replicate all the features of the OE shock absorbers and are just as easy to install according to the plug-and-play principle. For vehicles with air suspension, Bilstein also offers its B4 air suspension modules. Bilstein says that unlike many remanufactured products (reconditioned old parts), they continue to support active suspension control. Bilstein B4 DampTronic and B6 DampTronic in comparison

Bilstein explains that its B4 gas pressure shock absorber is 100 percent the same as the factoryfitted components in terms of quality and functionality – but at a lower price. This applies to the actively controllable DampTronic variants just as much as to the basic product used for passive suspension systems. Bilstein says people who have to master particularly tough everyday conditions with their vehicle or simply want to increase its performance can opt for the Bilstein B6 DampTronic, stating that it represents improved OE replacement in combination with active suspension systems. Going beyond the original, Bilstein says it offers a noticeable plus in safety and performance – without lowering or changing springs. Its higher performance reserves are particularly effective in the following scenarios: on poor or winding roads, in dynamic driving, in dangerous situations, when towing a trailer, when transporting external loads – such as bicycle racks or roof racks – and generally with heavily loaded vehicles. Bilstein B4 air suspension modules

Defective air suspension modules are often replaced by relatively inexpensive remanufactured parts. However, Bilstein says the price advantage comes at the price of various disadvantages in terms of performance and functionality. It asserts that Bilstein B4 air suspension modules, on the other hand, are a real alternative to expensive original parts. As one of the few aftermarket options, they are completely brand-new, while remanufactured old parts include used shock absorbers with uncertain wear status. In addition, Bilstein warns that manufacturers of remanufactured components often disable the electromagnetic control valve instead of replacing it, which turns a high-end system with active control into a passive one. With Bilstein B4 air suspension modules or Bilstein B4 DampTronic and B6 DampTronic shock absorbers, on the other hand, Bilstein says cars drive like they did on day one. Garages with little experience of active or air suspension systems can not only get the right spare parts from Bilstein, but also a wealth of know-how, receiving support from the YouTube channel “BILSTEIN Technical” at www.youtube.com/user/bilsteinde and valuable installation, diagnosis, and repair tips at workshop.bilstein.com or www.repxpert.co.uk as well as interesting training opportunities. These are available free of charge as face-to-face training, live events in the digital classroom or – brand new – in the form of e-training that can be carried out independently. CONTINENTAL TYRES UNVEILS NEW EXTREME E RACING TYRES

The new tyres are made from one-third recycled materials

Continental Tyres recently announced the launch of a new high-performance tyre for the second season of the all-electric Extreme E racing series. The company has unveiled a complete redesign of the tread compound and carcass of the secondgen CrossContact Extreme E – with its core focus being on using sustainable materials. Engineers and materials experts at Continental Tyres have developed the new tyre model to improve both performance and sustainability, placing particular emphasis on utilising a high proportion of sustainable materials. The new CrossContact Extreme E is made from approximately one-third recycled and renewable materials. An example of these new innovations is the use of silica obtained from the ashes of rice husks (a waste product from agriculture) used in the production of tyres. In addition to reprocessed steel and carbon black, Continental Tyres is using polyester yarn made from recycled polyester PET bottles to produce the tyre carcass – the first time this has ever been done for an Extreme E tyre. Thanks to the use of plastic bottles, conventional polyester has been fully substituted in the CrossContact Extreme E tyre. Continental Tyres is supplying 30 tyres to all 10 Extreme E teams – these contain recycled polyester made from approximately 60 reprocessed PET bottles. Further, the technology will be integrated into the volume production of various Continental Premium Tyres later this year. Sandra Roslan, who supports the Extreme E racing series at Continental Tyres, is confident that the tyre developers’ efforts will also have an effect on the future of conventional tyres. “With Extreme E, we test our latest technologies and developments under particularly extreme and unique conditions. These results help us introduce sustainable solutions for our volume production,” Sandra said. The second-generation CrossContact Extreme E tyre will be used in all five races of the 2022 season and is reportedly optimised for maximum performance in all climate zones and terrain conditions. The tyre features an all-terrain pattern consisting of big blocks and an off-shoulder design which Continental Tyres says makes it perfectly optimised for hot and soft surfaces like sand and gravel. It also incorporates a “stone bumper feature” to bump out the stones that occasionally get stuck in the tyre during a race. “With the wealth of new knowledge gained during the first season, we have been able to enhance the next generation of CrossContact Extreme E and have placed an even greater focus on the use of sustainable and recyclable materials,” said Nels von Schnakenburg, the Technical Manager for Extreme E at Continental Tyres. Extreme E brings electrically powered vehicles to the most remote corners of the world, in an effort to raise awareness around climate change among motor racing fans.
