STRENGTHENING OUR INDUSTRY: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2023/24 FINANCIAL YEAR
As I reflect on the 2023/24 financial year, I am really proud of what our team has collectively achieved
It has been an exciting and rewarding time for the Association, with continued growth, stronger connections with our members, and some significant wins for the industry.
Representing an industry of 50,000 businesses and 300,000 workers, and directly supporting our 3,000 members through advocacy and valuable business services brings daily challenges, but it is a privilege to champion such a dynamic and innovative sector. Our successful year spanned a wide variety of activities, events, and advocacy that made our members stronger and our sector more resilient.
Key to our continued impact is our steadfast commitment to government relations and advocacy, addressing the industry’s biggest challenges.
We made our views very clear through formal submissions to major government inquiries relating to our sector: the industry skills shortage, the EV transition, skilled migration, apprenticeships, and autonomous vehicles.
Our reactive advocacy was equally robust, with prompt action on issues such as ROVER, AIS (QLD), Repairer Classes (NSW), GCM (WA), Engineers Registration (SA), Vehicle Modification and ADAS (NSW), and Certifier Audits (NSW).
In a demonstration of our ability to swiftly mobilise against bureaucratic roadblocks, we led a delegation of members involved in second-stage manufacturing to Parliament House, Canberra, for urgent discussions to remove impediments to our local manufacturing industry. This successful action highlighted our commitment to defending and promoting our sector.
The Australian Auto Aftermarket and Collision Repair Expo, our industry’s flagship event and our Association’s biggest activity, was a resounding success, with record attendance. It provided invaluable training, showcased top brands, and resulted in high satisfaction among exhibitors and
attendees. Financially, the Expo was profitable, setting a strong foundation for future initiatives, including the Autocare skills and training convention in Brisbane (20-21 June 2025).
Meanwhile, this publication (AAAM) has continued to play a vital role in keeping the industry informed, up-to-date, and inspired, and remains a highly successful AAAA enterprise.
Our business support services for members grew stronger, with enhancements to our market intelligence offerings, such as the improved Car Parc Data Portal, updated industry dashboards, and wage benchmarking tools. Our Legal and HR Hotlines guided hundreds of members, while many accessed our direct advocacy support.
Mandatory data sharing remained a high priority, and we are proud that the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority (AASRA) continues to grow, with 3,260 subscribers, 900 registered for vehicle security credentials, and 800 qualified to access EV information. These numbers are increasing daily, demonstrating the value of this new law to independent workshops across the country.
Leveraging our experience and expertise, we supported New Zealand’s choice of repairer advocacy campaign, facilitated an industry leaders’ group, and secured funding for their activities.
The exciting Auto Innovation Centre (AIC) experienced significant growth, launched a highly anticipated Vehicle Scan Data Portal, and introduced a new Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) testing service, further establishing its role as a unique provider of critical services and innovation for the industry.
I always look forward to meeting our members across the country at our networking events, which saw strong support and attendance throughout the year, offering valuable opportunities for industry professionals to connect and share insights.
Our team demonstrated their industry commitment with participation in dozens of industry events, delivering keynote presentations, representing the Association, and engaging with stakeholders across the sector.
Our marketing activities provided regular and timely updates to our members and the broader industry. Tailored information helps our members better understand changes in the market, make informed decisions, and recognise our advocacy efforts.
The relaunch of the Performance Racing and Tuning Council (PRTC) sparked renewed interest from this dynamic sector. I look forward to seeing this diverse and passionate segment of our industry progress forward.
From a group financial perspective, the Association’s revenue grew by 11 percent, with the addition of 277 new members, reflective of the value AAAA represents to businesses across our industry.
I wish to extend my gratitude to the AAAA Board for their visionary leadership and to our dedicated teams at both AAAA and AIC for their outstanding contributions throughout the year.
Our members are the foundation of this Association. Your unwavering support and encouragement inspire us daily, and our efforts are always driven by a commitment to your success.
As we move forward, the AAAA is well-equipped to continue advancing and safeguarding our industry, delivering sustainable growth and meaningful outcomes through leadership, advocacy, and highvalue member services. I remain optimistic about the future and eagerly anticipate the prosperous times ahead.
Before I sign off, if you are wondering how the upcoming National Vehicle Emission Scheme (NVES) will impact the car-parc and the automotive aftermarket, I encourage you to visit https://youtu.be/8QmxcJAm_AY to check out an explainer video we have put together about the scheme’s key effects and how the AAAA is working to protect and support the industry through this major shift. AN UNWAVERING MISSION
Capricorn’s whole reason for existing is to help its Members
build stronger businesses
In our cooperative’s 50 years of operation, that vision has never changed. We might have changed the way we say it, we might have expanded our range of Members, but the truth of it hasn’t changed.
David Fraser Group CEO, Capricorn Society Ltd
It is something I’m really passionate about, which is why I’ve been personally so heavily involved with Australia’s peak body for cooperatives like ours, the Business Council of Cooperatives and Mutuals (BCCM), and its predecessor organisations, over the years. Late in October, Capricorn’s Chief Experience Office Jacky Mills and I presented at the BCCM’s Leaders Summit, which this year was held in Perth.
It brought together executives and directors from the C-suites of cooperatives and mutuals across Australia, so we could share ideas, network, and discuss best practice initiatives and policies. A hugely diverse range of sectors were in attendance, all of them with a mission just like Capricorn’s.
I was present at the founding of BCCM more than a decade ago, so it was a nice opportunity for me to say thank you and bid farewell to an organisation that is doing so much to make cooperatives stronger, including being our collective voice to government.
Our 50 Years Strong celebrations also continue, with new Member, Supplier and employee stories being posted regularly to cap.coop/50 It was great to see Members and Suppliers celebrating together at the NSW Gala and I look forward to seeing more Members and Suppliers celebrating at the Galas in the coming weeks.

INTERNATIONAL SECTOR ASSOCIATIONS CALL FOR INDEPENDENT OPERATORS’ ‘RIGHT TO REPAIR’
The Associations came together for a Global Meeting during Automechanika 2024
Thirty associations representing the multi-brand vehicle aftermarket in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, India, South Africa, the USA, and from almost twenty European countries, as well as European associations representing their sectors at the European Union’s level, gathered in Frankfurt during Automechanika 2024 for the Right to Repair Global meeting (R2RG).
Over the years, the R2RG meeting has increasingly become a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration among the associations representing the multi-brand Automotive Aftermarket worldwide. More than just a gathering, this forum actively shapes the future of the industry. A central focus includes addressing common challenges, particularly those arising from unclear practices by vehicle manufacturers.
A significant challenge facing repairers, parts distributors, and suppliers is the need to maintain unrestricted access to Repair and Maintenance Information (RMI), technical information, and the freedom to use tools and spare parts.
With the advent of digitalisation and the emergence of ‘software-de fined vehicles,’ new concerns have arisen, including access to in-vehicle generated data, the vehicle’s operational functions and resources, the growing absence of repair information for electric vehicle batteries, and the increasing issue of parts captivity.
In this context, vehicle manufacturers gain a competitive advantage by controlling the data generated by vehicles.
This control impacts the volume and quality of information available to independent service providers, ultimately limiting digital opportunities for the businesses and restricting the freedom of choice for the consumers.
The participants agreed on the urgent need for a fair playing and robust legislative backing to address
these challenges across various regions of the world.
Effective enforcement measures are essential to ensure that vehicle manufacturers adhere more closely to automotive regulations.
“Associations representing independent repairers around the world face powerful and well-funded adversaries in the form of global car makers who seek to maximise profits by using their technological advantage and market power to direct consumers into their authorised dealership networks,” Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
“It is therefore vital that the global aftermarket community gather together to share their experiences and best practice under the Right to Repair Global banner to assist them to advocate for sector specific Right to Repair legislation to level the playing field and ensure all car owners have the right to choose their preferred repairer.”
Auto Care Association President and Chief Executive Officer, Bill Hanvey, echoed Stuart’s comments.
“Our global aftermarket associations are aligned to support regional legislation that ensures our industry has access to real-time repair and maintenance data,” Bill said.
“While many regions have Right To Repair initiatives at different stages of execution and development, our global symposium offers an opportunity to share best practices and to ensure a collective voice around the world on this issue that threatens consumer choice.”

LET’S DRIVE THE ADAS CALIBRATION CONVERSATION FORWARD
The noise around Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) calibration is getting louder, and it is time we address it together
In workshops across Australia, we are caught in a struggle between conflicting opinions.
On one side, there are those who insist that even the smallest job on a vehicle requires ADAS calibration. On the other, some dismiss the need for calibration altogether.
Both extremes miss the mark, leaving many in the independent automotive service and repair industry grappling with misinformation. This confusion creates frustration for repairers and uncertainty for vehicle owners.
We need to bridge the knowledge gap to ensure workshops are making informed decisions about when to invest in equipment and when to use that technology to calibrate ADAS-equipped vehicles. That is why it is a significant step forward that the Automotive Repairers Council of Australia (ARCA) has formed a Technical Working Group dedicated to crafting a voluntary industry framework for ADAS diagnosis and calibration.
Here’s the bottom line: these safety systems will save lives and by 2030, over 40 percent of our car parc will be comprised of vehicles equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking.
Ensuring the ADAS features are working as intended is a critical service that we now provide to our customers.
As more vehicles come equipped with ADAS, understanding these systems has never been more important, and our industry is more than capable of rising to that challenge.
However, as we flagged at the start of this article, we are often bombarded with conflicting advice. Some say calibration is mandatory for every small
repair, while others argue that these advanced systems can self-calibrate or rarely need attention.
But like many things in our field, the truth lies somewhere in between. Not every job will require a recalibration, and yet these systems aren’t magic –if something is out of alignment, they aren’t going to correct themselves. So, where’s the balance?
The answer isn’t in blanket recommendations but in applying technical knowledge, experience, and clear protocols.
That’s where ARCA’s Technical Working Group comes into play. This TWG has been tasked with drafting a comprehensive Industry Code for service, repair, and maintenance procedures that will impact or affect the ADAS.
The experts within this group, professionals who have generously volunteered their time, represent the very best of our industry.
Their work will give workshops and technicians the practical guidance they need, based on real-world scenarios and solid engineering principles. These individuals are the unsung heroes navigating a rapidly evolving landscape. They know that the right approach isn’t about overreacting or doing nothing; it is about addressing the complexities of modern vehicle systems with thoughtful, informed strategies.
A voluntary framework will provide clarity amid the confusion we often face. This isn’t just “safety theatre” – it is about genuine safety.
We all recognise the risks of getting it wrong. If an ADAS system is misaligned and not calibrated correctly, it could present serious issues for drivers and create liability concerns for repairers.
Lesley Yates, AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy info@aaaa.com.au
At the same time, we must consider the costs of unnecessary calibrations – both in terms of time and money for the workshop and the customer. Finding the right balance is essential, and that is exactly what this framework aims to achieve.
The independent auto service and repair industry is filled with skilled, knowledgeable professionals. We understand our craft, and part of that is knowing when we need to seek more information. With this new framework, we are reclaiming the ADAS conversation and putting it back in the hands of those who truly understand it.
It is time for the independent repair sector to rise above the noise and take ownership of the ADAS calibration process.
Let’s step up with our expertise and engage in a conversation grounded in facts and technical wisdom.
Our efforts are focused on helping the industry confidently navigate the ADAS landscape, ensuring we maintain our customers’ trust and uphold the integrity of our work.
In closing, I want to send a big shoutout to the TWG members for leading this initiative. With their guidance, the road ahead is looking clearer, and together, we can drive the industry forward.
ON POINT FOR NEXT GENERATION SERVICING
Melbourne workshop joins global network
Allpoint Automotive, in Melbourne’s inner west, has been selected as the pilot site for the Australian launch of the global NexDrive service network.
Providing ‘next generation service, for next generation vehicles,’ NexDrive is being rolled out by automotive giant Genuine Parts Company (GPC), the parent company of Repco and NAPA, to assist leading independent workshops keep pace with the advancements in vehicle technology.
Industry representatives recently joined GPC executives to get first-hand insights into the NexDrive model, with a workshop tour and an opportunity to meet with key partners, including ADAS Solutions and battery supplier Infinitev.
Allpoint Proprietor, Kris Degenhardt, is excited by the opportunity to partner with GPC and align his business with a global brand and network.
“I’m always looking to evolve our business and make sure that five or 10 years from now, we are just as profitable as we are today,” Kris said. “To do so, we need to stay on top of things like driver assist technologies, telematics and new generation power trains, and NexDrive fits perfectly with what we want to achieve.”
GPC Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Bryant, echoed the future focus sentiment and GPC’s commitment to the automotive industry.
“At GPC, we’re driven by a purpose to ‘Keep the World Moving’ and NexDrive, with its focus on future-proofing automotive care, is a great example. Together with NexDrive, GPC’s growing partnership with ADAS Solutions, our investments in new state-of-the-art distribution facilities and the recent acquisition of Australian Parts Group (APG) will all play a critical role in fulfilling this vision.” Wayne said.
“We are also deeply committed to keeping our world sustainable, and we see NexDrive playing a
lead role in supporting workshop owners as they evolve their businesses to service a fleet powered by low emission drivetrains, and new technologies.”
NexDrive is already operating from more than 300 sites across North America and Europe, with expansion into the Australian and New Zealand market currently underway. The Australian arm will operate in conjunction with another GPC workshop partnering network in Repco Authorised Service (RAS) and according to National Manager, Peter Rogers, this will further enhance the support that RAS provides to its membership.
“NexDrive provides forward thinking workshops within our network an opportunity to gear up as advanced vehicle technology and new generation power trains penetrate the Australian Car Parc,” Peter said.
“Combining the global backing of GPC with our local expertise, we have the resources, experience, warranty support and cutting-edge digital platforms to ensure our members can offer unparalleled service to owners of the next generation of vehicles.
“And through workshops like Kris’, we are proud to be delivering a premium experience to drivers,
focusing on safety, reliability, and technological expertise.”

AAAA calls for government support
After taking part in the workshop tour and Australian launch of NexDrive, Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates, applauded the NexDrive initiative as an excellent example of industry working together, whilst stressing the need for ongoing government support.
“Our industry provides an essential service to the Australian public, not only in ensuring an efficient transportation system, but also saving lives and reducing our overall greenhouse emissions, both of which are being aided by sophisticated vehicle technologies,” Lesley said.
“It is therefore imperative that government supports our workshops with continued investment in vocational training and financial subsidies to assist them to gear up with charging equipment and specialised tooling.
“By coupling government initiatives with the private sector to upskill training and support programs like NexDrive, we can ensure vehicle owners continue to receive expert care, tailored to modern automotive needs, while ultimately protecting the Australian consumer’s choice of repairer by building and supporting our local independent workshops’ capabilities.”

AAAA WELCOMES HISTORIC AUSTRALIA-UAE TRADE AGREEMENT
The agreement is set to boost opportunities for Australian Automotive Manufacturers
The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), the peak body representing Australia’s automotive manufacturing industry, has welcomed the recently concluded Australia-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
This milestone trade deal, the first of its kind between Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), provides Australian businesses with unprecedented access to the UAE market.
Under the agreement, 99 percent of Australian products, including manufactured goods, will benefit from reduced or eliminated tariffs when exported to the UAE.
This significant reduction in trade barriers offers Australian automotive manufacturers – particularly those producing 4WD and high-performance vehicle upgrades and accessories – an opportunity to expand their reach into the UAE and the broader Middle East region.
“The UAE is an important market for Australia’s automotive sector, and this agreement provides our industry with the confidence to explore opportunities on a larger scale within the region,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
“We commend the Federal Government, and in particular Senator the Honourable Don Farrell,
Minister for Trade and Tourism, for delivering this landmark deal.”
The UAE already represents a key market for Australian automotive exports, with nearly 20 percent of all Australian automotive manufacturing exports destined for the UAE.
The removal of tariffs will further strengthen this trade relationship, benefiting local manufacturers and creating new growth opportunities in the region.
Nigel Bishop, AAAA’s 4WD Industry Council Convenor, also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the positive impact on Australia’s 4WD aftermarket industry.
“We’re especially excited for our 4WD manufacturing members, whose products are highly regarded in the UAE for their durability and engineering excellence,” Nigel said.
“The timing is perfect as we prepare to lead our regular trade mission to Automechanika Dubai.”
In line with the AAAA’s commitment to promoting Australian innovation, the Association will host an Australian Pavilion at Automechanika Dubai – a premier event for showcasing Australian-made products to international markets.
The AAAA will bring a delegation of innovative
companies to Automechanika Dubai, including REDARC, Powerdown Australia, Zeder Corporation, Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes, and Leisure-Tec Australia.
These businesses will showcase a wide range of products, from high-performance transmission components to heavy-duty 4WD/off-road electronics, accessories, and suspension systems.
“This agreement marks a significant milestone for Australia’s automotive manufacturing industry,” Stuart said.
“We’re proud to help our members take advantage of these new opportunities and look forward to supporting their growth in the UAE and the broader Middle East region.”

AAAA CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE PAUSE OF QUEENSLAND AIS SCHEME MANDATORY TRAINING
The Association is urging the future Queensland Government to reconsider this policy and work collaboratively with the industry
The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) is calling on the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to pause the implementation of mandatory training for Approved Inspection Station (AIS) scheme members.
This policy was developed without any industry consultation or feedback from AIS scheme members and lacks a clear cost/benefit analysis to justify its introduction.
AAAA says the timing of this announcement – during a caretaker period – raises serious concerns about governance and transparency from both TMR and the Minister for Transport and Main Roads.
By rolling out the policy now and setting cut-off dates for subsidised training, AAAA says TMR is bypassing essential processes for industry input. AAAA believes this approach undermines the credibility of the policy and its supposed benefit to Queensland motorists.
“We are deeply concerned by how the department
has handled this,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
“The decision to push through the policy during the caretaker period, with little regard for industry feedback, is unacceptable.
“While we welcome subsidised training, the rushed timeline and mandatory nature of the training are inappropriate for the majority of workshops.
“The AIS Roadworthy system in Queensland has fundamental issues.
“Some of our best-approved inspectors are considering leaving the scheme because they feel unfairly targeted, while operators who exploit the system can simply take a training session and continue to undermine road safety.”
AAAA has received a commitment from the Queensland LNP to review this implementation and engage with industry if they are elected.
The AAAA will continue to push for genuine consultation and an evidence-based approach to any changes affecting the AIS scheme.
“I welcome the commitment from the Opposition – it is a very clear statement that the Opposition was not briefed on TMR’s strategy,” Stuart said.
“Importantly we are now confident that should the LNP form government after the election they will seek urgent briefings from the department and will seek further engagement with the industry.”
The service and repair industry plays a critical role in ensuring road safety for all Queenslanders.
AAAA urges the future Queensland Government to reconsider this policy and to work collaboratively with the industry to find solutions that benefit businesses and protect the community.
AIS scheme holders with concerns or questions are invited to email advocacy@aaaa.com.au
HONDA PAYS PENALTY FOR ALLEGED BREACH OF MVIS
Honda Australia is the exclusive importer and distributor of Honda-branded vehicles in Australia and a data provider under the MVIS scheme
The ACCC is responsible for enforcing the MVIS scheme under the Competition and Consumer Act (CCA).
Honda Australia has paid a penalty of $18,780 after the ACCC issued it with an infringement notice for an alleged breach of Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme (MVIS scheme) information sharing requirements.
The ACCC alleges that from 1 July 2022 to 6 May 2024, Honda Australia offered to supply the software only by yearly subscription, and did not give independent repairers the option to purchase less expensive subscriptions on a daily or monthly basis.
“We allege Honda breached the requirements of the MVIS scheme, which is designed to make vehicle servicing and repair more competitive by giving independent repairers access to the same technical information, including software, that dealerships have,” ACCC Acting Chair, Catriona Lowe, said.
“Providing repairers with flexibility and choice in how they access information under the MVIS scheme is fundamental to increasing competition and consumer choice.
“Making the information available on a daily, monthly and annual basis allows independent repairers to select the access period that is most appropriate for them.
“This in turn enables them to be in a position to offer more competitive prices to consumers.”
This is the first ACCC enforcement action for an alleged contravention of the MVIS scheme.
“We are continuing to conduct compliance checks and we will take appropriate enforcement action for non-compliance which is detected,” Catriona said.
“In appropriate circumstances, this may include commencing proceedings in the Federal Court, where contraventions of certain MVIS Scheme provisions may attract a penalty of up to $10,000,000 per contravention.”
The ACCC will also release updated industry guidance in the coming months about the MVIS scheme.
Further information is available at www.accc.gov.au
AAAA CONFIDENT IN MVIS INTEGRITY
In the wake of the ACCC fining Honda, the AAAA has been reassured the scheme is functioning as intended
The Motor Vehicle Information Scheme (MVIS) is the first data-sharing law of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and was championed by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), the peak body for the automotive aftermarket industry.
Introduced in 2022, the MVIS was a groundbreaking law with far-reaching implications for Aussie car owners, making it illegal for car companies to withhold information from qualified independent mechanics.
Motor vehicle manufacturers selling vehicles into the Australian market are required to provide information for conducting diagnostics, servicing or repair activities to repairers at a price that does not exceed the fair market value.
Subscriptions for repair and service information from the car makers must also be offered on daily or monthly basis. Failing to comply with the main obligations of the scheme can result in penalties.
“This game-changing law has been critical for Australian consumers and independent service and repair workshops, but to maintain its integrity, it must be continually monitored and upheld, with compliance ensured for any breaches,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
The AAAA says the ACCC’s recent enforcement action underscores that the law is being closely monitored, and a proper compliance process is in place.
“This ACCC decision should remind manufacturers that they must comply with the legislation. While most car makers are doing the right thing, a few outliers, in our view, are not fully operating within the spirit of the law,” Stuart said.
Stuart also acknowledged the vital role of the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority (AASRA) and the ACCC’s Motor Vehicle Information Scheme (MVIS) Unit in ensuring competition and consumer choice within the Australian automotive repair industry.
The ACCC MVIS Unit oversees the mandatory sharing of service and repair information between car manufacturers and independent repairers, and AASRA is the body responsible for the law’s day to day implementation.
“AASRA has worked tirelessly to administer and improve the operationalisation of the law for technicians, and resolve issues, and I also want to acknowledge the dedicated professional technicians across the country for reporting alleged MVIS breaches for investigation,” Stuart said.
As reported elsewhere on this page, Honda Australia paid a penalty of $18,780 after the ACCC issued an infringement notice for allegedly
breaching the MVIS information-sharing requirements by failing to provide independent repairers the option to purchase more affordable daily or monthly subscriptions.
“This law is vital to our industry. It is making a real difference to consumers and workshops across the country, and the ACCC’s compliance actions ensures its continued relevance and success,” Stuart said.
“As the peak automotive industry body, we care deeply about this Law, and we will always advocate for strong competition laws that support a level playing field and give consumers the choice.” Tuning up our world leading data sharing law
While confident in the integrity of the MVIS, the AAAA is calling for amendments in response to concerns from independent workshops regarding the accessibility and cost of manufacturer diagnostic tools.
As discussed by Stuart Charity in the September 2024 edition of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine, independent repairers currently need to subscribe to over 60 different car brand portals, each with its own unique process and costly brandspecific tools.
The AASRA Portal, which allows a single credential to log in to over 30 OEM portals, has simplified this process for subscribers – however, it does not address the challenges and expense of having to purchase specific diagnostic hardware for every brand.
To address this, the AAAA is seeking to amend the MVIS to require all manufacturers to adopt the SAE-J2534 protocol, which would allow workshops to use a single tool across all vehicle brands, reducing costs and simplifying the repair process.
The AAAA is encouraging its members to participate in consultations about the MVIS and is already in communication with the Honourable Andrew Leigh, Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities, and Treasury, requesting a dialogue about minor improvements which could have a significant impact.

AUTOMECHANIKA SHOWS THE WAY FORWARD
The leading trade show provided a forum for innovation, showing the way forward for the mobility transition
From 10-14 September, Automechanika Frankfurt showed once again in 2024 why it is the leading international trade fair for the automotive industry.
The slogan of this year’s Automechanika was ‘Driving Transformation’ and organisers state this was evident throughout the trade fair in forwardlooking presentations on key topics like the digital transformation, sustainable mobility and artificial intelligence, in practical training workshops, in the ‘Workshop of the future’ special showcase and in lively panel discussions, stating that never before were so many innovative technologies presented as in 2024.
Presenting their very latest products and innovation solutions for workshops, industry and retail at the show were 4,200 companies from 80 countries.
Over an area of 320,000 square metres and 26 hall levels, trade visitors from 172 countries were able to discover pioneering technologies and even try some of them out in the outdoor exhibition area.
This year’s trends were electrification, vehicle connectivity, driver assistance systems and digitalisation.
Show organisers report the expanded supporting programme was a hit, with 108,000 visitors from 172 countries taking advantage of this chance to find out what matters in the industry today.
“Even in the midst of the digital transformation, the industry once again demonstrated its wealth of innovation, providing countless highlights over the course of the five-day event,” Messe Frankfurt Member of the Executive Board, Detlef Braun, said.
“Together with our exhibitors, we were able to find the right players to present the most important topics – including alternative drive systems, sustainability and the use of AI and robotics in the automotive aftermarket – on the stages and in the exhibition halls.
“We are also delighted by growing demand from both German and international visitors.”
A total of five stages played host to discussions of trends and developments in various industry sectors.
In the Future Mobility Park and the corresponding expert forum Innovation4Mobility, visitors had the opportunity to experience vehicles with alternative drive systems up close – including electric, hydrogen and hybrid – and even to get behind the wheel themselves.
There were also new event formats, like an exciting rally, for even more highlights.
Ninety four percent of trade visitors – 70 percent of whom came from abroad – reported they were happy with the event, both with what the trade fair had to offer and the achievement of their goals.
“Never before has Automechanika in Frankfurt had a supporting programme and range of events like this,” Messe Frankfurt Vice President Mobility and Logistics, Michael Johannes, said at the conclusion of the show.
“Our roster of presentations and practical workshops covered a wide range of topics, including bodywork and paintwork, electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, caravan repair, 3D printing, detailing and much else besides.
“These were very well received by the professionals, and students and pupils took advantage of the opportunities on offer to find out for themselves what some of the automotive trades and professions are like.
“One of this year’s new additions was a programme and area devoted especially to Generation Z.
“We wanted to draw their attention to the professional opportunities that are available in the fascinating world of the automotive industry – and we were very successful.”
The special area for Gen Z was titled ‘Ambition’ and was located in Hall 3.1, featuring brief and captivating presentations, panel discussions and live acts designed to interest young people in the automotive trades.
Show organisers explain this was done due to the well-known shortage of skilled staff in the automotive industry, stating that new concepts are needed to attract the next generation.
“Ambition was the innovative hotspot for Gen Z,” Automechanika Special Events Director, Wolfgang Weyand, said.
“Several content partners such as Eintracht Frankfurt, the congress organiser Copetri, the Myle car festival, Econ and Holm contributed greatly to the success of the content section.
“Communication for this new format took place almost exclusively via social media; the most successful reel on TikTok has one million views.
“In the evening, the programme seamlessly transitioned into a party atmosphere in the visually and technically very appealing venue.
“One highlight was the show by US hip-hopper ‘Rich The Kid’ on Thursday evening, which attracted over 1,000 young people to the Ambition area.”
Sustainable technologies, products and solutions were also a particular focus of this year’s Automechanika.
The stage in the new Sustainability Court in Hall 5.0 hosted numerous presentations on remanufacturing and on strategies for the circular economy.
The next instalment of Automechanika Frankfurt will be held from 8-12 September in 2026.

VACC CEO TO RETIRE
Geoff Gwilym has announced he will step down from the role
Following 10 years of leadership at the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), Geoff Gwilym has said it is time for a change.
“It is particularly timely given a new Executive Board is being formed through a member ballot,” Geoff said.
Having spent most of his working life in the industry, Geoff brought much talent and capability to VACC, with government and industry linkages extending nationally and internationally.
Since returning to VACC in 2014, having previously worked there in the early 2000s, Geoff worked closely with the Board to restructure VACC’s governance arrangements, build a viable commercial income stream and ultimately create a new home for VACC in its new North Melbourne premises.
Working closely with members, the Association has grown its membership while delivering on a range of state and national policy initiatives.
Geoff will complete his term at VACC in the view that the Association has the capability and resources to advocate and lobby for the industry for the next 100 years, and more.
Geoff extends great thanks to the VACC Executive Board for their trust in his management and direction and also the staff at VACC, who he says have been the catalyst for many of the changes that have been won for the industry.
Geoff hopes his mantra for workplace ethics at VACC will be assumed by his successor: “if the work you are doing doesn’t have a direct and positive impact on a member, stop doing it.”
VACC President Chris Hummer extends his thanks and appreciation to Geoff for his immense contribution to the chamber and automotive industry more broadly.
“Geoff has been an outstanding CEO,” Chris said. “On behalf of the VACC Board, I would like to acknowledge and thank his tireless work advocating for the automotive retail industry.

THE LION BRAND LIVES ON
The year 2017 marked a pivotal moment for the Australian automotive industry with the closure of Holden’s manufacturing plant in Elizabeth, South Australia
While this was a bittersweet farewell, the presence of Holden on Australian roads talks to the brand’s enduring legacy.
The Australian car parc is evolving with the rise of electric vehicles and more modern technologies, but iconic models like the Commodore still remain a staple.
From an aftermarket perspective, the longevity of these vehicles, combined with strong consumer loyalty (and the closure of the Holden dealer network), ensures that Holdens are still frequently seen in workshops across the country.
Enduring market share
With nearly two million vehicles on Australian roads (out of a total car parc of around 20 million passenger and light commercial vehicles), Holden still holds an impressive 10 percent share of the total car parc. This makes it the second most common in the country after Toyota.
This includes around half a million in each of VIC (approx. 552k) and NSW (approx. 477k), highlighting Holden’s dominance in these major markets during its heyday, and ensuring continued business for service and repair shops nationwide.
Looking at the data though, we can see that just under half of the remaining vehicles are pre-2010 models, with the wear and tear over time meaning that those vehicles are likely to need more complex servicing or repair work (for example, suspension / steering issues, transmission issues, brake system wear, and so on).
Given this, workshops will need access to technicians with the relevant training and experience to keep them in peak condition.
One name, one legacy
Although Holden has offered a wide range of models over the years, none have left a mark quite like the Commodore.
First launched in 1978, there are still more than 785,000 units on the road, standing as a testament to Holden’s appeal to both private
and fleet buyers throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
While the Commodore is the clear leader (with around 40 percent share), a number of other models are also still present in significant volumes.
The Rodeo and Colorado both still operate in the crowded ute market, while smaller models like the Astra and Barina once performed well in the competitive small passenger car segment. For any workshop looking at the opportunity though, Commodore has to be top of the list.
For Australian workshops, Holden remains a symbol of reliability and opportunity.
With nearly two million Holdens still on the road, and the iconic Commodore leading the charge, servicing and maintaining these vehicles offers substantial business potential.
As the Holden fleet ages however, these workshops will need to ensure their teams have the technical expertise to handle these models alongside their newer, more technologically advanced counterparts.
Ultimately, despite newer technologies taking a growing share of the market, there remains a strong case for investing in the skills needed to maintain Australia’s beloved Holdens well into the future.

FLASHLUBE GOES GLOBAL WITH US OPENING
On 1 October 2024 the Don Kyatt Group of Companies launched its largest overseas branch, opening its doors in Stockton, California
The California branch is the 19th company-owned branch for the Don Kyatt Group of Companies, and its ninth outside of Australia, allowing it to expand its operations while effectively creating a large home base for the Terrain Tamer and Flashlube brands in North America.
While Flashlube has been shipped into the US for over 25 years to various customers and smaller distributors, the brand has never had its own warehouse to help establish the brand, and truly take its fuel solutions and product offerings into the large American automotive market.
Flashlube’s journey has been one of continuous growth, since the brand’s first product, Valve Saver Fluid, was developed in 1986 by German CSIRO Scientist Wolfgang Kluenner, working from Melbourne’s Monash University.
He recognised the problem of Valve Seat Recession in his own Gas converted vehicle and knew it couldn’t be just his engine that was suffering, so he devoted his time to researching and inventing a solution.
LPG and CNG are dry burning fuels that combust at a higher temperature than petrol and the damage they cause to engine valves can lead to valve burning, lack of performance, loss of compression and premature engine failure.
Wolfgang’s Valve Saver Fluid was created to form a protective coating, separating the two metals by a film of lubricant preventing contact and stopping Valve Seat Recession.
The accompanying Flashlube Valve Saver Kit was created to inject the fluid directly into the vehicle’s fuel system.
The formulation was also developed to give a more complete burn in the combustion chamber, reducing emissions and fuel consumption, and improving power, as well as utilising concentrated cleaning agents to allow deposits to blend with the gases burned in the combustion chamber, maintaining efficiency without causing harm to catalytic converters or oxygen sensors.
Flashlube Pty Ltd was formed by the Don Kyatt Group in 1995 to take Wolfgang’s technology to the world.
Five years later the Australian Government announced it was removing all leaded petrol from the market and local demand for Valve Saver Fluid exploded, as the formulation provided a solution for vehicle owners needing a product which would minimise the damage in older model engines, unprepared for unleaded fuel. The product remains popular with vintage car clubs and owners, even today.
As a few years passed and more vehicles were to run on unleaded fuel, there was less need for a lead replacement solution in the local market and demand tapered off, however the popularity of Flashlube’s international growth was about to get its first real boost.
After having been exported in minimal amounts to around 20 European countries via a stockist in the Netherlands, which earned the brand a AAAA Gold Award in Export, Flashlube’s international distribution got a lucky break when the German Government passed a law in 2008 stating that mechanics would need to guarantee any work done in fitting an LPG system to a vehicle for 12 months.
Faulty work would cost them thousands in warranties, and Flashlube explains that its Valve Saver Kit was “the only solution available that could perform and last beyond the guarantee period, so it became a must-have item and, very quickly, the world leader in its field.”
After an exhausting year of Flashlube’s Melbourne Head Office team working basically around the clock to ensure European orders were met, filling containers full of Valve Saver Kits that were essentially already sold before they even left the docks, the Don Kyatt Group had the opportunity to open a warehouse in Aix-en-Provence, in the South of France.
In a whirlwind fortnight, the company’s upper management travelled to France to sign paperwork and organise all that was needed to get the French warehouse up and running, allowing for local Flashlube stock on the ground and faster fulfillment of orders into the region, and skyrocketing sales. During this time, Flashlube says its Valve Saver Fluid also became the only
product in the world to be granted TUV approval in a road test for valve seat protection.
When the fuel industry began to modify the availability of Diesel Fuel and supply only Low Sulphur Diesel Fuel, and Flashlube says it was once again at the forefront.
Although environmentally beneficial, the new fuel standard caused concern for those running older Diesel vehicles and engines, and a solution was sought after.
With thorough and lengthy research behind it, Flashlube Diesel Conditioner was introduced into the market, offering a sulphur free formulation that lubricates just as well as original diesel fuel. This period of product development also included the addition of other additives and lubricants, such as Oil Stabiliser, Injector Cleaner and Winter Fuel Formula – a cold diesel fuel flow improver developed to combat gelling in diesel fuel, which can occur in cold temperatures and results in the plugging of fuel lines and filters causing the engine to run rough, hard starting, and complete shutdown.
But Flashlube says it was the Diesel Conditioner, along with the introduction of accompanying preventative maintenance hardware in the form
of a Diesel Pre-Filter and Catch Can, as well as Design Protected, vehicle specific fitting kits, that made the biggest impact and were launched as Flashlube’s “next generation” of products.
Addressing the issues of dirty diesel fuel and the dangerous and costly damage it can cause, these products received large amounts of media attention as well as awards for innovation and quickly became essential tools for 4WD operators running a common-rail engine.
These diesel products also helped Flashlube to further expand globally as the Don Kyatt Group opened branches in locations such as South America and Africa, where the 4WD car parc and the required engine solutions are extremely similar to that of Australia.
Flashlube Oil Stabiliser has been a welcomed edition to the various African countries, allowing more longevity out of their vehicles. It combines with the 1HZ engines popular in this market to reduce wear, reduce oil leaks, and also smoke. These environments are also the ultimate testing ground for the quality of greases. Here, with many mining customers driving their vehicles in and out of water holes, the Flashlube High Temperature Grease has a proven track record with wheel bearings and Flashlube says its Moly Grease has become a staple with every CV change.
This continued product development and consistent growth across the almost 40 years since Wolfgang’s Valve Saver Fluid was first taken to market has seen Flashlube grow into a truly global brand today, sold into more than 80 countries around the world, including as far away and exotic as Peru, Iceland, Poland, and Thailand.
Now, with a dedicated base for distribution into the United States, it is set to continue reaching even more vehicle owners, each with their own unique set of needs for their vehicle’s engine. The geographical growth of Flashlube is also complemented by the expansion of the brand’s product range, with the recent addition of products such as both Concentrate and Pre-Mix Radiator Coolant, Dot 3 and Dot 4 Brake Fluid, Silicone Oil, and AdBlue.
Along with a relaunch of the brand’s High Temperature and Moly greases, and further projects nearing the end of the research and development stages, Flashlube’s range is no longer the single product that Wolfgang developed all those years ago, but is able to be used in
applications across most motor vehicle, farming, industrial, transport and motorbike markets across the world.
Flashlube explains that today’s Diesel vehicles come with a host of environmental protections placed upon them which can be limiting to the vehicle’s performance if not addressed.
For example, the DPF (Diesel Particular Filter) found in many modern diesel vehicles, can block prematurely if the vehicle is only driven on metro roads without the ability to regenerate on a freeway and burn excess carbon.
It says Flashlube’s Diesel Conditioner addresses this need in many ways by ensuring a complete burn in the combustion chamber, keeping the fuel system clean of carbon build up and greatly reducing the DPF blocking tendency.
A blocked DPF is not only expensive to clean but can be a substantial cost to be replaced. By addressing this large diesel problem, Flashlube says its Diesel Conditioner has become a “must have” product in the market and one that is sought after by diesel drivers all over the world.
“The customer who has mechanical sympathy for his vehicle, knows the challenges and the benefits of applying preventative maintenance,” Flashlube Product Manager, Sam Maio, said.
“The beauty of the product is that it not only prevents costly repairs, but also allows the vehicle to reach its full potential in power, fuel economy and longevity by cleaning the system and lubricating the fuel system’s seals and pump.”
A new generation of Flashlube users, who can remember their parents requiring the use of Flashlube’s earliest products, now have vehicles of their own – often more modern vehicles with
dramatically different needs to those of 30 or 40 years ago.
Today, each of Flashlube’s products is carefully researched, designed, and formulated to carry on that legacy and give the same everyday advantage to mechanics and vehicle owners alike, equipping them with the reliability and expertise that has been of the utmost importance, ever since Wolfgang created his Valve Saver Fluid.
“The Flashlube story has been an amazing journey. It has found demand right across the globe,” Don Kyatt Group General Manager, Brent Hutchinson, said.
“I remember when we were resetting up our distribution in Europe, at Automechanika Frankfurt.
“We had a small stand and for five days, distributors were lined up five wide and five deep wanting to sign on, in different markets.

ZF USES AI TO DEVELOP CLOUD-BASED ADAS AND AD SYSTEMS
Modern, automated driver assistance systems require a large number of sensors in order to precisely analyse the vehicle’s environment and derive safe driving manoeuvres
To further advance the development of these ADAS and AD solutions, technology group ZF has developed its cloud-based and AI-enabled validation service ZF Annotate, which was unveiled at the ZF Global Technology Day in June. Precise and reliable data is essential for the development of advanced assistance systems in vehicles.
Cameras, radar, lidar, or ultrasonic sensors continuously supply information from which the vehicle creates a three-dimensional image of its environment.
The systems must recognise a wide variety of objects in real time, including vehicles, people, lanes, and traffic signs, for example.
This sensor data must be processed digitally correctly so that the vehicle always receives the “absolute truth” – known in the industry as “ground truth” – to calculate and implement a driving function based on it.
Comparing the collected sensor information with a reliable and high-precision reference sensor set increases accuracy, and this is where ZF says ZF Annotate comes in.
AI for more speed and increased safety
Based on the customer’s own vehicle data and additional ZF sensor data recordings – the reference measurement – the cloud-based service solution provides the “ground truth.”
ZF Annotate acts as a redundant setup that is independent of the sensor set to be checked and is confronted with the same information while driving on the road.
The recorded data is then uploaded to the cloud and analysed. Thanks to artificial intelligence, ZF says all relevant objects are accurately marked, classified, attributed and assigned unique ID numbers and moving objects are tracked. This object information forms part of the complete description of the environment model, the ground truth. After this “annotation” the software provides a highly precise comparative measurement.
ZF says this makes ZF Annotate a state-of-theart, AI-supported validation solution for testing
and training modern ADAS/AD systems from Level 2+ to Level 5.
“ZF Annotate combines the advantages of a robust and independent reference sensor set with a scalable cloud service that uses intelligent 2D and 3D tracking algorithms,” ZF Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr Holger Klein, said. Previous comparable systems mainly relied on 2D annotation for the validation of reference data and thus map the environment in distance and horizontal angle. The 3D-capable ZF Annotate adds height information to the data.
“This makes our solution a unique, intelligent ‘cloud factory’ in the industry, which optimises a previously labour-intensive, costly service in several respects,” Dr Klein said.
ZF says this system is up to 10 times faster and 80 percent cheaper
ZF says the precise and reliable data from ZF Annotate’s reference measurements can therefore significantly accelerate the development and finetuning of complex ADAS and AD systems.
Until now, the validation of such systems involved a great deal of work and was correspondingly timeconsuming and costly, as the reference data was traditionally annotated manually by humans.
“Thanks to artificial intelligence, we can speed up the validation process by up to 10 times and thus reduce an annotation from 12 to two months. This saves our customers time and money,” Dr Klein said.
“With ZF Annotate, we are able to generate a ‘ground truth’ in the shortest possible time,” ZF Head of Research and Development in the Driver Assistance Systems and Electronics Division, Klaus Hofmockel, said.
“With the ability to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our cloud-based service completes the validation of reference data in a remarkably short time compared to the market, without any loss of quality.”
Develop once, roll-out everywhere: flexibility in every respect
Depending on customer requirements, the reference sensors are either used on the test vehicle itself or in “Pursuit” mode, which is a sensor set mounted on a separate reference data vehicle.
Pursuit mode can be used without major adjustments to the vehicle being tested – for example, when evaluating parking scenarios in public spaces.
This flexibility in application makes ZF Annotate independent of specific sensor manufacturers. The otherwise cost-intensive modification of customers’ high-tech test vehicles is also no longer necessary, says ZF.
Customers can therefore also include the service in development projects that have already been started.
In this way, ZF says ZF Annotate “supports the validation process in the most effective way and thus the goals of every developer on the way to a flawless product.”
Furthermore, the reference data recorded is not just limited to a front view.
Depending on customer requirements, the reference sensor set can provide a comprehensive
360-degree view, providing a detailed and precise representation of the vehicle’s surroundings.
ZF says it is known for developing new technologies for various application areas, and states ZF Annotate can be used across all vehicle classes in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors.
“Reliability and efficiency are significant when it comes to validating reference data in the development of increasingly popular advanced driver assistance systems,” Dr Klein said.
“ZF Annotate offers both in a scalable system. With our solution, ZF is delivering another building block on the road to the software-defined vehicle.”

FIX CVT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
Burg Design says its X-1R Premium CVT Transmission Treatment can help
The idea behind the Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) is pretty easy to understand: a heavy-duty belt or chain runs between two grooved pulleys with a system of hydraulic actuators allowing the effective ratio to be ‘infinitely’ varied within a range of ratios seamlessly.
Unlike conventional transmissions or most automatic ones, there is effectively no gears. Most big manufacturers are adopting some form of CVT to help them meet targets for overall fleet fuel consumption as stipulated by governments around the world.
However, says Burg Design, there have been problems. It says these continuously variable automatic transmissions keep the engine in its sweet spot for acceleration (or fuel-efficiency), but this is often to the detriment of noise and vibration, leading to complaints of a disconnected, ‘motorboating’ feeling when accelerating, in which the note of the engine isn’t connected to a sensation of speed. At their worst, CVT transmissions can feel sluggish, or as if something is uncertain or slipping.
One of the main problems a lot of manufacturers
are having is the low mileage at which the CVTs are failing.
Burg Design says the primary cause of failure is wear and tear on the belt system due to the ever-changing position of the belt/chain – this can result in a loss of power, slipping, delayed gear engagement, improper shifting, bad odour, hesitation and shuddering.
Burg Design even says it has heard unconfirmed reports that Nissan have been particularly hard hit by complete failures and that many Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda and Subaru CVTs experience excessive juddering.
The company says that as it has identified a potential problem in the marketplace, it has also created a solution, stating that its formulators and chemists have created a product which is specifically designed to alleviate the sorts of wear problems that lead to shuddering, seal leakage and complete failure of a CVT.
The X-1R Premium CVT Transmission Treatment product is a fully synthetic CVT fluid Treatment which has been specifically formulated to exceed the performance requirements of a wide range of vehicles that have either a push-belt or chain CVT.
Key features and benefits:
• Extend oxidation stability of transmission fluid
• Increase CVT life
• Improve fuel economy
• Dramatically reduce friction
• Reduce transmission wear and tear
• Recondition seals for better leak protection
• Increase torque capacity
• Increase anti-shudder protection

OPPOSITE LOCK BULL BARS
Fully ADR compliant
Australian Design Rules (ADR) are the national standards for road vehicle safety, anti-theft and emissions, covering a wide range of areas, including vehicle protection, structure, lighting, braking systems and more.
A particularly important component of ADR is airbag compatibility, especially for vehicles equipped with airbags that must comply with ADR69 and ADR73 regarding occupant protection.
For these vehicles, aftermarket accessories, such as bull bars, can only be fitted if they are certified by the vehicle manufacturer as suitable or demonstrated by the bull bar manufacturer to not adversely affect compliance with these safety standards.
This ensures that the installation of accessories does not interfere with airbag deployment, maintaining the safety of passengers in the event of a collision.
Opposite Lock says it understands the importance of adhering to ADR standards and as such, its bull bars – specifically the Opposite Lock, Raxar, and Oxley ranges – are designed with a commitment to quality and safety.
“We ensure that each bull bar complies with the necessary ADR regulations, providing our
customers with peace of mind that their vehicle modifications will not compromise safety features,” Opposite Lock Marketing Coordinator, Yoksan Tang, said.
“We believe that vehicle enhancement should not come at the expense of regulatory standards; instead, it should promote a safe driving experience.
“To further enhance the quality and durability of our products, we have our bull bars independently tested to exceed industry standards.
“We E-Coat our bars before applying a powder coating, ensuring they are not only tough but also resistant to corrosion and wear.
“Additionally, we ensure that our bull bars are suitable for new vehicle radar systems and tech packs, meeting the technological demands of modern vehicles.
“In addition to our commitment to ADR compliance, Opposite Lock offers a two-year warranty on our Opposite Lock, Raxar and Oxley bull bars.
“This warranty reflects our confidence in the durability and reliability of our products, assuring our customers that they are investing in accessories built to withstand the rigours of the Australian environment.

MACNAUGHT BATTERY OPERATED PUMP
Macnaught says this product can revolutionise your workshop
In today’s competitive automotive market, efficiency is key.
Service managers, from large dealerships to small workshops, are constantly seeking ways to streamline their operations.
One area that often requires improvement is the time-consuming task of manually pumping oil from drums.
Macnaught says its BOP Battery Operated Pump offers a solution to this challenge.
Designed for 20 and 60/205-liter drums, it says the BOP provides a more efficient and safer way to handle oil, achieving this in two distinctively integrated ways.
The first way is by employing powerful 18V Lithium Ion battery technology.
Using this technology gives the ability to provide on-demand power for the accurate delivery of specialised oils up to SAE90.
Battery power is common in the modern automotive workshop as the BOP’s Lithium Ion rechargeable battery is complemented with a desk charger to provide a full recharge in just one hour.
The second way is through a portable, selfpriming pump which is capable of single handedly dispensing oils from 3/5/10L oil cans to 20 and 60/205 litre drums, on-demand.
The on-demand feature comes from an internal pressure switching mechanism that senses the fluid pressure when the control nozzle is closed –thereby interrupting the pumping process.
Flow resumes when the control nozzle is opened due to the pressure drop in the delivery hose detected by the pressure switching mechanism.
An additional and distinct innovative feature of the BOP reflects the fact noted above regarding the increasing variety of oil pumps to support the multitude of oils required by automotive works and mitigating their cross contamination.
Macnaught explains the BOP is suitable for engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil (oils up to SAE140 viscosity), automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and engine coolant. A single BOP Pump stem can handle multiple fluid types.
Designed and manufactured in Australia, the
Macnaught BOP is a portable, rechargeable, 18-volt battery operated oil pump, designed to improve workshop efficiency and reduce the fatigue inherent in the operation of manual oil pumps.
The BOP is available from 3L oil cans to 205L oil drum variants as both Starter Kits and Stem Packs.
ADRAD INTRODUCES JRONE TURBOCHARGERS
ADRAD’s range of Jrone Turbochargers suit popular passenger, 4x4 and light commercial vehicles
ADRAD explains that Jrone turbochargers are produced by a world leading original equipment and aftermarket turbocharger manufacturer with accreditation to ISO 9001 and IATF 16949.
It says stringent quality control is implemented at every step of the manufacturing process to ensure these turbochargers provide reliable operation and long service life.
ADRAD states that Jrone’s fully assembled products feature higher tolerance, and a more precisely balanced Centre Housing Rotating Assembly (CHRA) compared with some found in OE parts.
It explains that a superior CHRA produces less vibration at high RPMs, which means reduced accumulated wear to the turbocharger over the course of its service life.
Further, high quality design and construction includes the use of nitride-hardened actuator components which also contributes to extending the product service life, says ADRAD.
Jrone turbochargers also feature aluminium compressor housing and cast-iron turbine
housing, while elastic sealing gasket material in high temperature areas utilises a special alloy which is resistant to fatigue, heat, oxidation and corrosion. Gaskets are included with each turbocharger.
A number of turbochargers in the range feature rotary electric actuation (REA). This allows the vehicle’s ECU to control airflow in the turbocharger, offering faster response times than its pneumatic counterpart.
ADRAD says overall turbo control is also more precise due to on-board position sensing, stating that both of these factors combined help to improve engine performance, fuel efficiency and emissions control.
Other turbos in this range are Variable-Nozzle Turbochargers (VNT). Used predominantly in diesel applications, the VNT function uses small shifting vanes around the turbocharger’s turbine wheel that adjust the speed and direction of turbine gasses.
ADRAD says this is effective for minimising turbo lag, providing responsive throttle and improved
torque at low speeds − and for preventing overboosting at high speeds.
ADRAD’s range of Jrone Turbochargers suit popular passenger, 4x4 and light commercial vehicles and are available at ADRAD warehouses across the country. They are backed by a 12month warranty.
ADRAD – which is quality accredited to ISO9001:2015, covering both manufacturing and distribution – says its ever-expanding range of automotive parts are becoming increasingly popular with mechanics and vehicle repairers; with its product selection chosen based on strong customer interest and high vehicle population. TRANSMISSION FLUSH V TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGE
In this article, the experts at MEYLE take a look at which is needed, and when
Despite many manufacturers still claiming, ‘lifetime filling’ or ‘maintenance-free,’ MEYLE says the reality is quite different, stating every vehicle which is supposed to function trouble-free in the long term needs a professional service.
Transmission oil is no exception, as it fulfils several important functions that can be lost with growing age and lack of care.
Particularly in automatic transmissions with wet clutches, where the friction lining floats in the transmission oil, an accumulation of various types of abrasion can occur in the oil.
To prevent damage to the transmission, MEYLE says the oil should be changed, or the transmission flushed at this point at the latest, but ideally after 80,000 – 120,000* kilometres.
Signs that the ATF needs to be changed can be starting difficulties or vibrations – an oil change then becomes essential.
As soon as you experience bumpy and delayed gear changes, it may already be too late, and a transmission flush becomes necessary.
However, neither maintenance procedure is a
substitute for repair, which may be required if symptoms persist, or performance remains the same after the change or flush.
MEYLE says the transmission oil change is the normal and recommended maintenance procedure for an automatic transmission and includes draining the old oil, changing the filter and other components (magnets, seals, etc) and filling it with the correct amount of new oil.
A transmission flush, on the other hand, removes the oil completely, ensuring the optimum removal of wear particles and impurities from the transmission. The old oil is drained either by compressed air or by changing the transmission oil, for which the circuit is flushed with additional new transmission oil until the colour of the incoming and outgoing oil matches.
MEYLE explains that automatic transmission fluid (ATF) refers to a specific type of hydraulic oil. This special oil is usually coloured red, yellow or light green to avoid confusion with other fluids. In addition to lubrication, it is also responsible for power transmission and cooling the transmission components. Moreover, it also hydraulically
transfers signals in the mechatronics and controls shift elements.
MEYLE notes this also means that any change in the ATF properties not only has a direct impact on the function of the automatic transmission, but also on its service life.
In conclusion, MEYLE says it can be said that regular servicing is not just a ‘nice to have’ when it comes to changing automatic transmission oil, but an absolute must.

INNOVATIVE ‘PEOPLE FILTER’ RANGE WINS RYCO FIRST PLACE IN AFR AWARDS
The recognition follows five years of the company placing within the top 10
Ryco’s innovation has been recognised once again in the Australian Financial Review’s (AFR) BOSS Magazine ‘Most Innovative Companies’ awards for the Manufacturing and Consumer Goods sector. After five years of placing in the top 10, Ryco has now come first in 2024 for its N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filters range for commercial vehicles.
Ryco explains the range of cabin filters was designed with drivers in mind with it reportedly being the only filter that does not directly affect the engine of a vehicle, serving as an important addition in trucks that are at times fitted with a basic leaf tray.
In commenting on the BOSS Magazine award, RYCO General Manager of Engineering, Innovation and Quality, Alastair Hampton, said the company was determined to develop something that served their customers in a way that hadn’t been considered previously.
“For a lot of truck drivers, their cabin serves as their office, their bedroom, and their main living space while on the road,” Alastair said.
“With that in mind, it is critical that they have the cleanest environment possible while on the road, and the best way to achieve that is with efficient filtration in the HVAC system.”
Developed to remove down to 0.3 micron at 99.7 percent efficiency, its construction is comprised of three layers: the first is a pre-filter with anti-viral agent eliminating airborne H1N1/H3N2 virus from the air flow; the second is an activated carbon layer that acts as an odour barrier; and the third is an electrostatically charged layer for optimum particle filtration.
The 360° air-tight seal also prevents air bypassing
the filter, which Ryco explains is a common issue found in some OE cabin filters.
“People are most often certain that the only percentage of polluted air they’re comfortable inhaling is 0 percent,” Alastair said.
“We are proud to have designed something that gets as close to that as possible, unseen elsewhere in the market.”
Ryco’s N99 MicroShield Cabin Filter range is now available for over 500,000 trucks on Australian and New Zealand roads.

MANN-FILTER FRECIOUSPLUS CABIN AIR FILTERS
These MANN-FILTER filters combat mould, pollen, and particulate matter in car cabin air
Global filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL warns that every third vehicle interior is contaminated with bacteria, mould, particulate matter, pollen, and harmful gases.
An air conditioning system is indispensable for many people when they are driving in hot weather. To ensure clean air flows into the vehicle interior, both the evaporator and the cabin air filter must be serviced or replaced regularly.
Dirty cabin air filters and poorly maintained air conditioning systems can cause health risks. However, service intervals are often not adhered to since most car drivers are not aware of them.
“It is really essential to regularly change the cabin air filter once a year or every 15,000 km,” MANN+HUMMEL Biofunctional Filter Materials Expert, David Keerl, said.
“And it is best to replace it with a highly efficient cabin air filter, such as our biofunctional MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus.
“By filtering out mould, germs, bacteria and pollen, it generates clean and healthy air for
passengers in the vehicle and also protects the air conditioning system from contamination.
“This extends the lifetime of the air conditioning system because it prevents deposits from forming on the fine structure of the evaporator and also maintains the system’s full cooling and heating capacity.”
A timely filter change improves performance
The heart of a cabin air filter is the filter medium. Over time and with increasing contamination, this medium slowly clogs and a “filter cake” forms in the pleats.
In heavily contaminated filters, the moisture present in the material also increases. This creates a breeding ground for germs and contaminates the filter and the immediate surroundings, even when the air conditioning system is not active.
The air flow rate also increasingly drops. If this affects the blower output, the risk of accidents increases because the windows fog up more quickly, and a dangerous blinding, greasy film forms on them.
Cabin air filters can only perform their meticulous
cleaning work flawlessly if they are promptly replaced at the recommended service interval.
MANN+HUMMEL says it provides effective protection against contaminated air with its highquality MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus cabin air filters in original equipment quality.
Every cabin air filter comes with detailed and easy to understand installation instructions.
MANN+HUMMEL says many vehicles can be easily upgraded with biofunctional FreciousPlus cabin air filters, stating that when changing the filter, the mechanic simply inserts the FreciousPlus in place of the previous cabin air filter.

Amidst the growing cost of living crisis, mycar is acutely aware of the impacts this situation is having on consumers and their ability to prioritise vehicle maintenance, which is putting vehicle and consumer safety at risk.
While mycar says it has always worked hard to ensure vehicle maintenance is accessible for consumers, it says this is now more important than ever, as its inaugural mycar Mobility Index has revealed just how dramatically cost-of-living challenges are reshaping mobility in Australia.
The research surveyed 2,004 car or vehicle owners on their thoughts around EVs, vehicle servicing and maintenance, the role of technology in cars, and the future outlook for mobility in Australia.
After summarising the key findings in the September issue of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine, in this article we dive deeper into the findings and their implications, with the help of mycar Managing Director, Adam Pay.
Vehicle maintenance and protection habits changing
• Three in five Australian car/vehicle owners (60 percent) have adjusted their vehicle maintenance habits amid economic pressures.
• Nearly a quarter (24 percent) have extended intervals between regular maintenance services.
• A fifth (21 percent) have opted for lower-cost maintenance services or repairs when available.
• 77 percent are undertaking some form of car maintenance themselves, with nearly a fifth
(17 percent) claiming to handle complex tasks like brake pad replacements or brake system maintenance themselves.
• Financial pressures are prompting half (49 percent) of vehicle owners to adjust their insurance coverage, with over one in ten (11 percent) dropping it entirely, and over a quarter (27 percent) opting for cheaper policies while maintaining some level of coverage. 14 percent missed or struggled to make a vehicle insurance payment due to the rising cost of living.
“It’s clear from the research that the current economic climate is causing customers to delay repairs or even carry out repairs themselves,”
Adam said.
“We all know that cutting corners, ignoring minor issues, or attempting to carry out repairs that are ordinarily carried out by a highly trained technician, can often become major and costly in the long run.
“Our trained technicians have the technical expertise to provide high-quality servicing and repairs and are always ready to answer any questions our customers have when they visit.
“We want to help our customers be as safe as possible on the road through regular servicing and clear guidance on the best ways to care for their vehicle in between visits.
“While we have a series of ‘how to’ DIY videos on our social channels, which are received well, they’re focused on less complicated tasks; ones that are good for drivers in general to know.
Managing Director, Adam Pay
“We also offer clever tools like ‘Auto Translate,’ a useful tool we created for car owners – from beginners to car enthusiasts – to explain car language in a way that’s easier to understand, using simple analogies to explain different car terms.
“Incorporated in these are messages regarding the need for regular servicing, along with the message that things wear over time, so regular maintenance is essential to keep your vehicle roadworthy, while also saving time and money in the long run by improving things like fuel economy. And addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from becoming significant, expensive repairs in the future.
“People often cut corners in areas that may not seem immediately critical but can lead to bigger (and more substantial) issues over time. We recommend servicing every 10,000 km, every 12 months, or in line with the manufacturer’s logbook recommendation – whichever comes first.”
Adam further explained that mycar offers a range of options to support customers to get their car serviced at the required intervals.
“We pride ourselves on being customer obsessed and putting our people first,” Adam said.
“We understand that a car service should be easy on our customers and their budgets, which is why we aim to provide a range of options for everyone.
“Our fixed-price service, and clear communication from our technicians, means there aren’t any surprises on the final bill, and we offer car maintenance packages depending on our customers’ needs and budgets.
“Zip Pay and Afterpay are payment options we also provide for our customers, allowing them to stagger their payments, offering improved convenience and cash-flow management options for customers to pay for their service.
“In addition, whenever customers purchase tyres, servicing or repairs, they can receive one Flybuys point for every $1 they spend.
“The mycar team is always on hand to support our
customers to choose the best package that is best suited for their car, taking into account vehicle age and kilometres driven.
“For those unexpected issues that customers may have with their car, it’s never been more important for our team to take the time to communicate clearly, carry out detailed, accurate inspections and make clear recommendations, to help the customer make the right decision about how to spend their money.
“For customers considering their next vehicle, we also offer pre-purchase car inspections that help prospective buyers understand the vehicle condition, what needs to be repaired and the cost to fix it to help our customers negotiate better.”
EV enthusiasts still outnumbered by sceptics
• Cost-of-living concerns are making EVs more appealing, with savings on maintenance and fuel (32 percent) making them attractive, and the rising cost of fuel (40 percent) also a factor.
• Close to a fifth (18 percent) of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) drivers would consider switching to an EV due to concerns about their carbon footprint.
• However, the majority (88 percent) of those surveyed still rely on petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles.
• Close to half (46 percent) of those ICE owners cite the servicing and maintenance of EVs as one of the major barriers for entry, alongside the limited range of EVs and limited availability of charging infrastructure (40 percent) and high upfront costs for EV, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles (38 percent).
• This contrasts with the majority (82 percent) of current EV owners who report high satisfaction with their vehicles’ reliability and durability.
“It is really interesting to note that there’s such a big difference in opinions of EV drivers versus non-EV drivers,” Adam said.
“Eighty-two percent of people that drive EVs are confident in the reliability and durability of EV; while
just under half those who don’t currently drive one, cite the opposite.
“It demonstrates that those who drive EVs love them; with 78 percent of EV drivers appreciating potential for lower associated costs and less complicated servicing.
“On the other hand, cost-of-living concerns certainly make EVs more appealing to petrol and diesel drivers given the savings they offer on maintenance and fuel.
“However, less than one-fifth (14 percent) of Aussies are planning on switching to these types of vehicles for their next car purchase.
“In our research we found the key roadblocks are the perceived lack of proper charging infrastructure in local communities, and high upfront costs of EV/ hybrid vehicles. Similarly, new technologies such as autonomous vehicles and AI-assistants being used within vehicles are creating concerns.
“The difference in opinions between petrol and diesel drivers and the actual experiences from EV drivers, highlights the importance of education and firsthand experience in shifting attitudes towards EVs.
“It is clear that the auto industry and government need to work together to build customer trust in what is an exciting future for mobility.
“The successful transition to sustainable vehicle options will need a clear and comprehensive public education initiative to clarify misconceptions, address current concerns and highlight the benefits of car tech innovation.
“The team at mycar is working to bridge the gap by providing reliable information, expert services, and promoting benefits of EV ownership; to help more drivers transition with confidence.
“We’re preparing our customers for the future of mobility by focusing on care beyond the car, equipping our team of auto-experts with the latest training and tools to service and repair both today’s vehicles, EVs, and connected cars of tomorrow.
“With an expanding mobile network, and a growing number of EV-ready stores we are dedicated to supporting Australians through this transition.” When it comes to the evolving nature of vehicles, survey respondents were also asked for their thoughts on digital distractions, with the survey finding drivers are apprehensive about the integration of emerging technology such as autonomous driving (44 percent), in-car data collection/monitoring for personalised services (36 percent), biometric recognition (26 percent) and virtual assistants such as ChatGPT (24 percent) or Amazon Alexa (26 percent).
Further, around nine in ten vehicle owners (88 percent) claimed to have witnessed other drivers being distracted by in-car technology, although only a quarter (24 percent) admitted to being distracted by notifications on their smartphones or by workrelated calls, messages or emails on their phone. Government and industry need to work together
• Over a quarter of Australian drivers (27 percent) want more government policies and initiatives in support of sustainable transportation.
• Nearly half (45 percent) of drivers believe a mobile EV servicing provider for future maintenance would be great.
• Over a third (36 percent) believe advancements in EV technology will lead to more efficient and convenient servicing options in the future.
As cars and vehicles continue to evolve, meeting Australians’ changing needs will require tackling key challenges.
“The government needs to work in tandem with industry when considering new initiatives related to decarbonisation plans, fuel efficiency regulations and electric vehicle incentives,” Adam said.
“This will be crucial to educating consumers through addressing misconceptions and providing clear information about the benefits, risks and costs of vehicle transition.
“Continued investment is needed across the board to ensure a strategic and unified approach. This includes expanding the charging network, especially in rural and remote areas, which will be critical to alleviating concerns about range and accessibility and should be a priority.
“Industry also will need to continue to provide value and affordability while providing high-quality solutions as consumers navigate cost-of-living challenges.”

Filpro Automotive says these filters have been trusted since 1934 for performance and reliability
Whether you have heard of FRAM Filters before or it is a name you are hearing for the first time, those behind the products say their “world-class quality filtration” is backed by more than 91 years of experience, research and development, making them “a market leader in filter technology.”
FRAM explains that its products are designed, engineered and manufactured in-house, with multimillion-dollar test rigs, giving them the capabilities to test OEM-ISO/SAE/JIC specifications. The constant research, testing and development that is invested into FRAM filtration reportedly keeps these products up to date and relevant in the advancing technologies within the industry; and is a means of manufacturing filters that meet or exceed Original Equipment Manufacturers’ filtration specifications.
FRAM says the key to filter performance is the quantity and quality of the material used in the filter media, stating that it ensures that all incoming raw materials meet quality standards before production. The filter media is made of cellulose fibres,
synthetic material or a blend of both, to provide an ideal balance of efficiency and flow, allowing the correct flow of oil, air or fuel to pass through to maintain the needs of the engine.
When testing oil filters, FRAM uses a method that passes contaminated oil through a test filter multiple times, until the pressure differential across the filter reaches a pre-determined level.
The test equipment also uses optical particle counters that count the number of solid particles in the oil before and after it passes through the filter, and based on this test, an oil filter is assigned a B, or Beta Ratio.
Giving further testament to its commitment to quality, FRAM says it has designed and manufactured its air filters to withstand Australia’s demanding climate, where it is too dry to keep highly abrasive silicate dust from being lifted into the atmosphere by high winds.
FRAM says its air filters provide superior protection, with rigorously tested filter media and increased
“Our in-house research and development process is a major part of the success of both our ClutchPro range as well as our performance brands, Xtreme Clutch and Xtreme Outback, which are exported around the world,” Simon said.
“We are focused on quality, range and value with our ClutchPro program and we are always focused on providing the ultimate aftermarket solution for trade customers who require availability of clutch kits and also the associated components.
“ACS has been in operation for over 30 years, and we understand the importance, now more than ever, of having the stock available for customers to access as quickly as possible.”
The ClutchPro and entire ACS range of products are available through an extensive distributor network throughout Australia, backed by ACS warehouses in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville, Darwin and Perth.
ACS says these distribution locations allow its team to provide prompt service and get customers’ cars back on the Australian roads.

PRECIOUS METAL SPARK PLUGS
NGK says its spark plugs offer superior ignitability and lower emissions
As emission regulations become increasingly stringent, the pressure on vehicle manufacturers to reduce emissions and improve efficiency has risen significantly.
Niterra says it is the world’s largest Original Equipment manufacturer and OE supplier of NGK Spark Plugs and as such, says it is continually growing its range of precious metal spark plugs. It states that NGK’s precious metal spark plugs deliver superior ignitability, when compared against conventional spark plugs, and are designed to meet and surpass the modern requirements of vehicle manufacturers.
“We have developed a series of innovative techniques that allow us to include precious metals such as Iridium and Platinum in our spark plug manufacturing process,” Niterra Australia Product Manager, Chantra Kriv, said.
While a number of spark plug manufacturers produce a precious metal range, Niterra says it is driving this technology further to improve performance, longevity, and to lower emissions.
Precious metals such as the ones described by Chantra have much higher melting points over traditional metals such as nickel.
“Incorporating precious metals into our spark plug range allows centre electrode diameters to
reduce from 2.5mm using nickel, to 0.6mm using iridium or 0.8mm using platinum, which reduces the quenching effect and improves ignitability” Chantra said.
Quenching occurs when heat energy is lost from the hot flame kernel to the cooler electrodes, as the flame attempts to expand and combust the air/fuel mixture. Reducing the centre electrode diameter decreases this effect.
Niterra says the results are impressive and installing precious metal spark plugs delivers improved acceleration, smoother idling, and improved fuel consumption.
“In addition to using Iridium and Platinum in our precious metal range, we also manufacture with high-grade alumina silicate ceramic,” Chantra said.
“This creates a stronger insulator, reducing dielectric punch-through, which is caused by the spark exiting through the side of the ceramic.
“To complement this, our cores are manufactured using 98 percent pure copper to increase heat dissipation for reliable starts and to prevent the spark plug overheating.”
To ensure quick, easy and precise fitment each and every time, all NGK spark plugs feature coldrolled threads that prevent cross-threading and
damage to cylinder heads and trivalent metal plating that negates the use of anti-seize during installation.
Niterra has an extensive range of spark plugs to meet each OE manufacturer’s requirements.
“It is important to remember that even though many plugs with similar part numbers may look the same, each part number has its own characteristics, with some changes not physically visible,” Chantra said.
“These differences are imperative to the operation of the engine and straying from the recommended plug can result in some loss of performance or even severe engine damage.”
For peace of mind, Niterra says you should always ensure you use a plug recommended to meet the OE specification, stating this will avoid any damage and ensure peak performance of your vehicle. For technical inquiries, call Niterra on 1300 554 059 or visit www.ngk.com.au

COOL MAVERICKS RELEASED
The book celebrates the Australian larrikins who showed the world how to air condition anything on wheels
Those behind a book called ‘Cool Mavericks,’ just released in Australia, say it reveals for the first time how colourful characters, fired with goldrush zeal in America and Australia and also in Japan, worked out how to air condition every car ever made, leaving the top car makers out of the game for almost half a century.
The buyers of the vast majority of air conditioned Australian cars from the 1960s to the 1990s had their aircon fitted, not by the new car dealership, but by an independent, private installer around the corner.
It wasn’t until almost the turn of the century that air conditioning became the default accessory in every vehicle on the assembly line.
Large private aftermarket innovators emerged in Australia to design and make the systems used in the Australian-made and assembled cars.
Many of the design standards and purpose-built machinery conceived by these companies are still being used by OEM suppliers today, but, like the car makers, most have left Australian shores.
In the hot states of America and Australia, it led to an exciting, innovative and lucrative period for those workshops that took a punt and started building and installing air conditioning in all kinds of mobile vehicles, including trains, tractors, boats and troop carriers.
Industry leaders say Cool Mavericks is the first attempt to give long-overdue credit to the real pioneers of mobile air conditioning, an unsung sector of the vehicle aftermarket who defied all the odds and fired up an industry that was never anticipated and so never planned.
The air conditioning systems devised by these entrepreneurs became the blueprint for all future mobile air conditioning.
The product of a ten-year research project in which more than a hundred pioneers in air conditioning were interviewed globally, Cool Mavericks exposes how mechanical tinkerers in often small, backyard workshops, took control of this opportunistic industry and dominated it throughout the second half of last century.
Cool Mavericks was published by the peak training and stewardship body in mobile air conditioning, VASA (Automotive Air Conditioning, Electrical and Cooling Technicians of Australasia).
Its authors are VASA’s Foundation President and industry pioneer, Mark Mitchell, and VASA’s Chief Executive Officer for its first 20 years, journalist Ken Newton.
In the foreword of the weighty 700-page hard
cover book, past-president of Mobile Air Climate Systems Association (MACS) USA, Peter Coll noted: “The history of motor vehicle air conditioning is a fascinating journey that spans the oceans and relies heavily on influences outside of the engineering departments found in the car makers’ factories.”
Current VASA president Brett Meads said the book would appeal to anyone with an interest in the Australian spirit of innovation, as well as automotive history.
While Australia’s pioneer role in mobile air conditioning development dominates the book, many of its pages are devoted to the early patents and vital discoveries that needed to be made before a cooling system based on refrigeration would ever work in a moving vehicle.
For example, those behind the book explain that the early refrigerants used in the first waves of stationary refrigeration in America were so toxic that if used in a vehicle, one leak and everyone in the car would die – and rigid lines used to carry refrigerants in the vehicles of the 1950s and 1960s didn’t last on poor road surfaces. The physical componentry of air conditioning had to be thought out and patented. Finally, somebody had to figure out how to stuff all this gear into a machine that was never designed to be mechanically air conditioned in the first place. The car air conditioning industry in Australia was full of characters. There were larrikins, opportunists and true entrepreneurs, but all of them in their own way were explorers working with nothing more than an idea of how to cool the biggest variety of vehicles on the planet in one country, and most of them worked out of a tin shed.
The book is available to purchase at www.vasa.org.au

AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER UNIT ALL GASSED UP?
That’s only half the story, says Davies Craig
We are coming into a very hot Summer which will produce some harsh environmental conditions, so it is time to check your vehicle’s air conditioning (AC) unit.
Is your AC unit properly gassed up and functioning correctly? Do you receive the occasional warm or hot shot of air when you turn on your AC unit?
If so, Australian-owned and operated cooling technologies company, Davies Craig, says chances are your AC system needs attention in two areas: regassing the condenser, and/or the electric fan may need replacing.
The re-gassing of your AC Condenser is a very specialised job and should only be undertaken by a qualified technician.
Davies Craig says the other vital and important component to your AC system is the Thermatic Electric Fan.
The Thermatic Electric Fan effectively pushes or pulls air through the air conditioning condenser to assist with heat transfer thus providing refreshing, cool air into your cabin.
The AC condenser is the major component and functions as a heat exchanger for the AC system, converting the refrigerant from gas to liquid so it can flow through the AC system.
Davies Craig says the heat generated can only be
expelled if a strong efficient Thermatic Electric Fan is installed, stating that a strong Thermatic Electric Fan with a high wind force (CFM Cubic Ft/Min = ft3/min) is essential to keeping the AC condenser cool so it can continue to efficiently convert the gas into liquid and keep the AC system functioning as designed. The stronger the air flow across the condenser, the cooler the air which can be generated inside the driving compartment. A defective or inefficient electric fan will be detrimental to your entire AC system.
Davies Craig warns that a proliferation of imported fans has emerged over recent years which are very similar in appearance while having dubious performance.
Consequently, Davies Craig says these units are not fit for purpose as they do not generate sufficient, effective CFM required to produce sufficient cool air flow through your vehicle’s air conditioning system.
Davies Craig has been manufacturing high performance Thermatic Electric Fans for more than 50 years and offers a wide range of Thermatic Electric Fans manufactured from strong, heatresistant 66 Nylon/glass, offering high air flow, low profile and low current draw. They also now have a three-year warranty.
Davies Craig says every one of its Thermatic Fan models have been put through exhaustive durability
and certified wind tunnel tests to ensure each delivers high, accurate air flow and CFM (ft3/min Cubic Feet per minute).
Every model can be installed in either ‘pusher’ or ‘puller’ configuration by simply reversing the blade and polarity for bi-directional air flow.
Davies Craig also recently introduced four High Power and four Brushless Thermatic Electric Fan models to complement the existing Thermatic Electric Fan range.
It says each of these models delivers a 40 percent higher CFM than their standard equivalent models and importantly, enjoy the same mounting profile. Models are available to suit 12V and 24V electrical systems.
All Davies Craig’s Thermatic Fans offer reverse polarity allowing each fan to be installed either in front (pusher) and/or behind (puller) the condenser. For more information, visit www.daviescraig.com.au

TRIDON HEATER FAN RESISTERS AND AC PRESSURE SWITCHES
Beat the heat this summer with Tridon
Tridon says its extensive range of Heater Fan Resistors and Air Conditioning Pressure Switches will ensure your customers’ car is ready to hit the road this summer.
Heater fan resistors are designed to operate the air conditioner and heater fan speed inside the vehicle by controlling the current flow to the fan motor, in turn changing the speed of the fan.
Faults with heater fan resistors are common –Tridon says to look out for a lack of air flowing; working on high or low speeds only; running constantly; or not working on a particular speed. In some cases, a defective fan resistor can cause a heater fan to stop working completely.
Continuous adjustments to the fan speed generates wear and tear on the resistor’s terminals, which in turn leads to shorting, or the resister being burnt out, resulting in an eventual failure.
Air conditioning pressure switches also require replacement over time as the air conditioning may cease to function or a vehicle fault code may appear. These are a safety device fitted to all modern air conditioning systems – placed in line with the cooling pipes, they monitor the air conditioning system pressure.
If the pressure rises to dangerous levels, or if there is a sudden drop in pressure, it will shut off the compressor to prevent damage to internal air-conditioning components and also to the compressor.
Tridon says its range of air conditioning switches has been extensively researched to provide a broad coverage of high quality OEM replacement parts. It states these have been developed to meet or exceed original equipment manufacturers specifications, making them suitable for direct replacement of the original switches in the vehicle. Live application data is available for all Tridon parts on Tridon Part Finder, and all applications are also available on major trade electronic catalogues. For more information, visit www.tridon.com.au or call 1300 362 263.
AIR CONDITIONING
THE ROLE OF CABIN FILTERS IN MAINTAINING AC
With Summer on approach, the importance of functional vehicle air conditioning becomes more apparent
A well-maintained air conditioning (AC) system not only ensures comfort during hot drives but also plays a crucial role in maintaining air quality inside the cabin.
Often overlooked, a vehicle’s cabin filter plays an integral part in maintaining the AC, explains Sakura Filters Australia.
Cabin filters are designed to trap dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants, preventing them from entering the vehicle’s interior.
By doing so, they enhance air quality and protect passengers, especially those with allergies and/or respiratory issues.
A clean cabin filter also helps the AC system work more efficiently, improving airflow and prolonging the life of various components.
Sakura Filters Australia explains that it offers a comprehensive range of cabin filters, including its activated carbon range and its advanced Bio-Guard series.
Bio-Guard Cabin Filters
Sakura says its Bio-Guard cabin filters stand out due to their advanced technology. These filters incorporate a specialised layer designed to capture not only larger particles but
also microscopic pollutants, including bacteria, allergens, and some viruses.
It says this added protection is particularly beneficial for urban drivers exposed to higher levels of air pollution.
These Bio-Guard filters also feature activated carbon, which effectively neutralises odours and harmful gases, enhancing the driving experience by ensuring a fresh and pleasant cabin environment.
Sakura says its commitment to quality is evident in its rigorous testing and adherence to industry standards.
Each filter undergoes comprehensive evaluation to ensure it delivers maximum flow while effectively filtering out harmful particles.
Additionally, the filters are designed for easy installation, making it simple for vehicle owners to replace them and maintain optimal AC performance.
Sakura says regular replacement of cabin filters, particularly the Bio-Guard series, is essential. Under ideal circumstances, Sakura says it is recommended to change the cabin filter every 20,000-30,000km or annually.
MAHLE PROVIDES KEY COMPRESSOR TIPS
When it comes to servicing and replacing electric air conditioning compressors, the experts at MAHLE have the following advice
Electric air conditioning compressors used in electric and hybrid vehicles differ significantly from traditional belt-driven compressors.
MAHLE explains these compressors require specific handling and care to ensure optimal performance and to avoid costly repairs.
Key features of electric compressors
One of the main differences between electric compressors and traditional belt-driven models is that electric compressors are hermetically sealed. Without a drive shaft, there is no risk of refrigerant leaking through shaft seals, which makes the system more reliable and efficient.
Inside the compressor, an electric motor drives the system. Since this motor comes into direct contact with refrigerant and compressor oil, it is crucial to use oil with insulating properties.
Using the wrong oil can lead to a short circuit if moisture enters the refrigerant circuit.
For this reason, MAHLE says nonhygroscopic oils like PAO multigrade oils are preferred because they do not absorb moisture from the air.
MAHLE recommends that you always follow
the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications when selecting refrigerants and oils, warning that incorrect oil choices or irregular servicing can lead to system failures and reduced efficiency.
It also states regular air conditioning system services are crucial to ensure electric compressors run smoothly and safely.
Replacing electric compressors
Replacing an electric air conditioning compressor requires special care and should only be performed by technicians certified to work on high-voltage systems, says MAHLE.
Electric compressors don’t have an oil drain plug, which means you can’t adjust the oil level through the compressor itself.
Therefore, the entire air conditioning system must be flushed to remove any old oil before a new compressor is installed.
MAHLE explains this ensures the system is free from oil residues and prevents overfilling, which could damage the new compressor. Any components that cannot be flushed, such as the drier, must also be replaced, it says.
However, similar to an engine air filter, Sakura explains the replacement interval can vary greatly based on the conditions it is subjected to. Therefore, it may be beneficial to change cabin filters earlier if deemed necessary.
Vehicle air conditioning plays a vital role in driver and passenger comfort, while cabin filters are essential for maintaining air quality distributed by the AC system.
Sakura says its range of cabin filters, particularly the advanced Bio-Guard series, provides an effective solution for cleaner air and a more efficient AC system.
For anyone looking to enhance their driving experience, Sakura says investing in high-quality cabin filters like those which it offers to the market is a smart choice.
For more information, visit www.sakurafilters.com.au
Additionally, many manufacturers use specialised software to safely commission a new compressor. This software, accessed through a diagnostic tester, ensures a slow and steady start-up, preventing a sudden intake of oil that could cause damage, such as hydraulic shock.

PAUL FRANKS HITTING FULL BOOST IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET
GCG Turbochargers Australia stands tall as an industry leader in the highly competitive forced induction product category
Spearheading the charge is Paul Franks, the General Manager of GCG Turbos and JLM Lubricants Australia.
For more than eight years, Paul has steered GCG’s continued growth while staying true to the Lloyd family’s core values of passion and quality upon which the company was founded more than four decades ago.
Moving to Australia from southeast London at the age of 15, Paul brought with him a deep enthusiasm for all things automotive – something instilled by his father, who was heavily involved in racing.
“I grew up in motorsport,” Paul said proudly. “My dad raced short circuit ovals in the 70s and started a company with his engine builder called Boss Racing. That company still operates and races today.”
This early exposure laid the foundation for Paul’s future career.
Determined to work in motorsport, he pursued an apprenticeship as an auto electrician, following his father’s advice that “one day cars will have computers on them.”
This vision proved true, with Paul stating it has given him a unique edge which still resonates in his leadership of GCG, which began in 2016 – although his relationship with the company was actually born long before he officially joined the team.
In the late 90s, Paul was instrumental in advertising deals for Fast Fours and Rotaries Magazine, where he helped bring GCG’s name into the spotlight. Years later, when the opportunity arose, joining GCG as Operations Manager seemed the perfect fit.
“We’ve created a culture where people stay because they love what they do,” said Paul, reflecting on the culture of GCG.
“We’ve got a guy who started in the warehouse packing boxes when he was 18, and now he’s a 35-year-old gun salesman. They stick around because they’re car guys, and they’re into it.”
GCG Turbochargers isn’t just about selling products; it is about expertise, says Paul.
“We are the turbo experts,” he said.
“We have made it our mission to cultivate a culture where every team member understands turbochargers and lives and breathes the technology – as you can’t make that claim and have them uneducated.
“We invest heavily in our employees, sending staff to Europe for specialised training with Garrett and to the Netherlands to understand the chemical intricacies of JLM products. The result is a knowledgeable team that customers can trust.”
GCG holds weekly sales meetings to foster collaboration and continuous improvement, a practice that Paul introduced when he joined the company.
“Every Wednesday morning, we start work early, and our entire sales team dial in for our weekly meeting before the phones start ringing,” Paul said.
“These meetings aren’t just about reviewing sales figures. They provide an open forum for the team to share insights and problem-solve together.
“There’s no hierarchy in that meeting because we
rotate the facilitator weekly, ensuring that everyone in the team gets to run the meeting at some point.”
Paul says this open environment encourages honest feedback and collective growth and further concretes GCG’s reputation as “the experts in the field.”
GCG Turbochargers has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1979, when three friends, Graham, Colin and Gary, banded together to launch the company.
Today, GCG has branches across Australia, including a recently opened office in Brisbane, and continues to expand to meet market demands.
Paul believes that attracting the right talent is critical to GCG’s success.
“One of our successes is attracting the right people. We’ve got guys who’ve been building turbos for 35 years. Our workshop foreman did his apprenticeship here, and now he’s 40. The culture we’ve built keeps them here,” he said.
Paul further explains that GCG’s approach to sales is built around adding value and being consultative rather than transactional – explaining they are committed to providing real solutions to their customers’ problems, with GCG’s sales team working with customers to diagnose problems rather than just replacing broken parts.
This approach helps build trust and long-term relationships with their clients.
“In automotive parts, the turbocharger is the commodity. Anybody can look up a part number, but we know what goes wrong with each application,” Paul said.
“We have scripts in place, it is not just, ‘How soon do you want it?’ It is about understanding the actual part number, the issue, and what might have caused the problem in the first place.”
Moreover, GCG has diversified its approach to meet customer needs at multiple levels, whether selling
to large resellers or dealing directly with workshops and end-users.
This versatility in distribution allows them to reach a wider audience while maintaining quality service, positioning them as a one-stop shop for all things turbo, says Paul, who states that while the automotive industry is changing rapidly, GCG Turbochargers knows the opportunities and challenges ahead.
“People always ask me, what about all these electric cars? You sell products for internal combustion engines,” Paul said.
“The answer is easy. Every year, vehicle manufacturers reduce the capacity of internal combustion engines and offset this by adding a turbocharger.
“In addition, more and more hybrid vehicles are being manufactured with an OE turbocharger.
“As these vehicles age, those turbos will need to be rebuilt or replaced, so we are far from feeling an impact from the growing number of electric cars in the Australian car parc.”
Paul is confident that the Australian automotive aftermarket will continue to adapt and thrive, no matter the industry’s changes.
“Everyone was saying that the whole industry would die because of new car modification laws, but I knew that wasn’t the case,” Paul said, citing an example from an industry event held around 12 years ago.
“The automotive aftermarket will always find a way to adapt. If they have power units or flux capacitors or whatever, I’m going to sell it to you.”
Beyond turbochargers, GCG also manages JLM Lubricants Australia, which has grown into an essential part of the business.
“JLM complements the turbo business, but it also stands alone. We have DPF cleaning solutions, ranging from a $20 can of ReGen Plus to a full DPF cleaning system,” Paul said.
The ability to offer a wide range of products that fit within the broader turbocharging ecosystem has helped GCG maintain a competitive edge.
Paul says JLM’s product range, which includes prelube for turbochargers, diesel fuel system cleaners, and DPF cleaners, adds significant value to GCG’s core offerings.
For Paul and GCG, the next five years are about expansion and focusing on core competencies.
“We’ve set up a branch in Brisbane and attracted the right staff,” Paul said.
“Victoria and WA definitely have the population and turnover to put GCG branches there. Having inventory and staff on the ground is always good as you see sales immediately.”
Paul also sees continued opportunity in mastering distribution for the brands they trust while reducing complexity.
“We’ve actually dropped some brands and are focusing more on the ones we know and trust, and keep more inventory of those selected brands,” he said, while noting that GCG Turbochargers Australia remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the turbocharging world.
“Our focus on cultivating expertise, nurturing a strong workplace culture, and staying ahead of industry changes has set us apart as a leader,” Paul said.
“We question ourselves; we question each other. Nearly every week, I say to myself, no other turbo company is doing what we do.
“This relentless pursuit of excellence drives GCG forward, and it is why we remain the trusted experts for all things turbocharged across Australia.
“Whether providing the latest turbo technology or ensuring every customer leaves informed, we are prepared to meet today’s and tomorrow’s challenges head-on.”
GCG Turbochargers is also a member of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), which Paul considers essential for maintaining a strong industry voice.
“There is a need for a conduit between the industry and government or legislators,” Paul explains, stating he believes the Association’s role as an unbiased mediator and technical collaborator is crucial.
“If you are in the industry, you want a gateway to talk to a legislator or get companies together to test and measure on a new model. That’s why we need the AAAA.”
Speaking with Paul, it quickly becomes apparent that his passion for the automotive industry goes beyond business – he genuinely loves cars, racing, and the engineering that makes high performance possible.
Quoting an Olympic gold medallist, he said, “if you find a job where you’re doing what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. I still go home thinking, I talked to people about cars and turbos today. There’s no better job.”

WCS CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
After beginning life as a service station, West Coast Suspensions is celebrating its centenary in 2024
What was first known as the WA Spring Service Station was established by William Jenkins at the corner of Wellington and Milligan Streets in Perth at the Motor House building (which still stands today) some time prior to 1924.
The then Jenkins W.H. Spring and Axle Service Station was incorporated in 1924 by William, with the company set up at its own address in Adelaide Terrace in Perth, directly opposite the old Ozone Hotel.
At that time, the company offered spring manufacture and repair services along with axle and alignment services. William was also a Perth City Councillor and ran the business at the Adelaide Terrace location up until his passing on June 13, 1944.
William’s wife Olive Jenkins took over administration of the company after his death, while James McCully – who was a registered accountant and set up office above the Ozone Hotel in Adelaide Terrace after returning wounded from the war – was the accountant before purchasing shares in what was by then known as Jenkins Springs sometime after William’s passing. This was followed by the remaining shares of Olive Jenkins being purchased in the early to mid1950s by James and Thelma McCully. At about that same time, the land at Adelaide Terrace was compulsorily acquired by the City of Perth and the company was re-located to a new premises at 188 Railway Parade Bassendean, where operations still continue to this day.
In 1984, Don and Hester McCully – the son and daughter-in-law of James and Thelma – bought the pair out before handing over the running of the company to their 21-year-old son, and James and Thelma’s grandson, James McCully Jnr.
James had been a part of the business for six years at that point after having joined at 15 in 1978 as an apprentice blacksmith, completing his trade certificate in November of 1980 before undertaking some studies at Curtin Night School in Small Business Administration.
Around 1996, Jenkins Springs purchased what was at the time the largest spring maker in Western Australia, Metro Baldock Springs, from Metro Industries. This made Jenkins Springs the largest spring maker and suspension supplier in WA.
During this time, the Jenkins Springs company transitioned to the name by which it is known today – West Coast Suspensions – to reflect its evolution from a spring maker to a full suspension specialist in 1997.
Due to increased competition from other spring and suspension companies in Australia importing overseas product and also BHP’s phasing out of spring steel production, the Metro Baldock facility was shut down in June of 2007, with the land and buildings sold.
Along the way, various renovations were undertaken to the old shed and office at 188 Railway Parade to allow for expansion before eventually a second site was purchased at 20 Durham Rd Bayswater in 2014 for extra warehouse space.
In 2020 4,200sqm of land (formerly Wesfarmers Insurance) was purchased adjoining the rear of 188 Railway Parade to build a dedicated 2,000sqm warehouse facility, with construction completed in July 2021.
In October 2022, 20 Durham Road was then sold to fund the purchase of 2 Vincent Street, Bassendean that same year, providing another 2,500sqm of land and 1,000sqm of warehouse space.
“We couldn’t let this important milestone go by without recognising our dedicated and long term team here at WCS who have been instrumental in bringing the business and our innovative product offering to where it is today and also our loyal and long term customers who have been pivotal to our growth and success, and have stuck by us for many years,” Jim McCully said.
“Thank you to you all for being a part of the West Coast Suspensions story as we get ready for an exciting future ahead!”

SUPERCHEAP AUTO SET TO BECOME SUPER TRADE PLAYER
Trade just got ‘super’ for Supercheap Auto and its trade customers
The Australian and New Zealand automotive company has officially launched a major initiative which it says cements its position as a serious player in the auto trade.
The recent public launch included the unveiling of two brand-new, purpose-built websites – one for Australia and one for New Zealand –designed for automotive workshops, businesses in the automotive trade, and other trade-based industries.
“The Supercheap Auto Trade websites are one of the most important initiatives that we have undertaken and the public launch is a very special moment for us,” Supercheap Auto Managing Director, Benjamin Ward, said.
“We have spent several years researching and investing into a trade platform that represents just how serious we are about trade.
“For workshops and other trade businesses, we have used the very latest in technology to make buying auto products not only easy but efficient.
“We know our customers are extremely busy so saving them time was our biggest priority.”
Amongst a host of new features is something which Supercheap Auto believes to be the first of its kind for the automotive industry.
The Supercheap Auto Trade websites will offer a Barcode Scanner facility where customers can scan any product, whether in store or at their workshop and it will provide full product information, including the tailored trade price.
From there, customers can add products directly to the shopping cart and have them delivered or use the rapid 30 minute Click and Collect now available at Supercheap Auto locations.
“We have also developed a full Account Management section that allows workshops to control their purchases and spending limits as well as view past invoices and apply for increases on 30-day credit accounts,” Benjamin said.
“What is particularly impressive is the ability to give access to all employees and even apprentices so they can have the benefit of exclusive trade pricing whilst the Account Holder is in full control.”
Supercheap Auto says there’s plenty of smarts behind the new e-commerce platform that integrates with all the key attributes of the website.
It says repeat and large orders have become ‘super’ easy and fast with a dedicated area to order bulk products and a re-ordering system for those items that are purchased on a regular basis. This means that customers can quickly reorder from a previous invoice or utilise the new Quick Order Form that’s designed to save time when placing a large order or stocking up on common items.
“In total, trade customers will have access to over one million products online from all of the biggest brands and the Supercheap Auto Trade team have ensured that pricing is not only ‘super’ competitive but is shown clearly and accurately on the new website,” Benjamin said.
The new website was not the only part of the Supercheap Auto Trade initiative announced at the launch.
“Our commitment to automotive businesses doesn’t stop at just a cutting-edge website,” Benjamin said.
“We have built a dedicated team of Trade Experts that are available seven days a week. So, if our customers need help, want to make a payment or place an order, specialised advice and assistance is only a phone call away.
“All in all, the new Supercheap Auto Trade offer is about saving our customers time and providing the very best value. Trade just got super.”

MAZDA LIABLE FOR AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAW BREACH
The Federal Court has found Mazda liable for failing to comply with the ACL, imposed significant penalties and ordered compensation payments, in addition to non-monetary penalty obligations
The Federal Court of Australia (Court) recently delivered its final decision regarding Australian Consumer Law (ACL) breaches by Mazda Australia Pty Ltd (Mazda) in Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) v Mazda Australia Pty Ltd (No 3) [2024] FCA 83.
How did Mazda breach the ACL?
The Court found Mazda breached ACL section 18 (misleading and deceptive conduct) and section 29(1)(m) (false or misleading representations), multiple times in respect of representations made to consumers regarding the ACL consumer guarantees.
The Court noted that forty-nine false representations were made to consumers in breach of the ACL in respect of seven vehicles purchased from Mazda dealers.
Broadly, the false representations were made in relation to two categories, as follows:
• false representations regarding the existence and effect of the consumer guarantees, and the rights and remedies available in respect of the consumer guarantees; and
• false representations regarding whether Mazda had reasonable grounds for forming the opinion that a consumer was not entitled to a remedy (in this instance the remedy of a refund or replacement vehicle at no cost), when Mazda had no reasonable grounds to form such an opinion.
What were the consequences of the breaches?
As a consequence of the breaches, the Court imposed substantial penalties on Mazda, amounting to $11.5 million dollars.
The amount of the penalty was based on several factors, including the size and profitability of the company, and the need to achieve general deterrence.
Due to Mazda failing to cooperate with the ACCC at the outset, the Court did not reduce the amount of the penalty.
In addition to the penalty, the Court ordered that compensation was payable to the consumers in various amounts representing the difference between any amounts they were paid by Mazda, and the amount they would have received for a refund or replacement (being the remedy sought by the consumers). This amount was a total of $82,291.
The Court also imposed non-monetary obligations on Mazda, including the implementation of compliance programs to facilitate future compliance with the ACL and issuing public notices acknowledging the breaches and informing consumers of their rights.
What can your business do to reduce risk?
Although Mazda is a vehicle manufacturer and large company, the ACL applies to both small and large businesses. It follows that it is prudent for a business to identify ways to reduce the risk of breaching the ACL.
A business can take steps that may help reduce the risk of breaching the ACL including, for example:
• ensuring that all staff understand the ACL consumer guarantees (including when and what rights and remedies are available) and receive training to help them avoid making false or misleading representations;
• remember that a warranty offered by a business does not replace the ACL consumer guarantees;
• implement a process to address customer complaints aimed at facilitating compliance with the ACL, for example:
- nominate a person who is familiar with the ACL to address customer complaints;
- implement a process to assess customer complaints aimed at complying with the ACL (including assessing if the business is liable and having a reasonable basis for denying liability); and
- ensuring staff do not make any false representations regarding the consumer guarantees (including availability of consumer guarantees, rights and remedies)
• seek advice on compliance with the ACL.
Key Takeaways
• A business will breach the ACL if false or misleading representations are made regarding consumer guarantees;
• A business will breach the ACL if they fail to comply with the consumer guarantees;
• The penalties imposed for a breaching of the ACL may be significant and encompass compensation, financial penalties and nonmonetary obligations; and
• It is prudent for a business to take steps to reduce the risk of breaching the ACL.

HPP LUNDS GOES TO THE AID OF NEXT GEN ENGINEERS
A desire to support the engineers of tomorrow has driven HPP Lunds to support a motorsport team for the first time
For many years the Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A) has been conducting its Formula SAE-A event, which is a yearly competition where university students design, build and compete in their very own Formula-style openwheeled racing car.
These are the young engineers of tomorrow who will work in fields such as mechanical and electrical, designing and developing new and innovative products and systems.
This event helps them develop the skills they will need for their upcoming employment and HPP Lunds says it recognises that these students are our future.
As such, the company has moved to make a positive contribution to assist with their efforts by sponsoring the Melbourne University team, MUR Motorsports, which is made up of 72 student engineers.
By supplying products from its wide range, including JB Weld adhesives and epoxies, grinding and cutting wheels, tools, equipment and accessories, HPP Lunds has provided consumables and tools which ease the financial pressure on MUR – after all, this is a student team.
“This is the first time that we have become involved with a motorsport team,” HPP Lunds Marketing and Sales Manager, Ben Leonard, said.
“It is the fact that the team is made up of eager young engineers that swayed us – we want to be a part of ensuring that Australia has these young people in our industry in the future.
“We are a relatively small company compared with the sponsors of major local motorsport teams, so we wanted to assist teams that mirrored our size.
“We came across MUR at this year’s Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo and decided this was something which we wanted to become part of our indirect marketing.”
Ben explained that the benefits for HPP Lunds boiled down to having experienced and capable engineers designing for the automotive aftermarket in years to come.
“As a distributor, HPP Lunds relies on engineers to develop Australian market ready products that suit local conditions,” Bend said.
“These young engineers will be able to do that once they complete their studies.
“For our customers having engineering students use the products means that they will be familiar with them and perhaps in the future be in a position to design some themselves.
“As an example, we carry a range of 4x4 parts and accessories under the Lunds banner, and we know we need to provide parts that will withstand the rigours of the Australian offroad environment.”
The partnership also offers additional benefits to HPP Lunds.
“Not only will our products assist the team to fulfill its ambitions in Formula SAE-A, but it will also ensure these future engineers become familiar with
HPP Lunds products and the value they bring to the automotive environment,” Ben said.
“MUR has already reported to us that the products we have supplied have contributed massively to their car project across many areas.
“The team has said that such a big project like building a car takes a lot of consumables, and HPP Lunds providing products has alleviated some of the financial pressure on the team, thus freeing up funds for important tasks such as track testing days.
“For instance, grinding wheels, cutting wheels and microfibre cloths have been essential in nearly every garage task.
“Meanwhile, the chassis team has used products to help clean and prepare the chassis and jig for welding; and the low voltage team has used products in line with its component manufacture.
“Other tools have been helpful with vacuum pump, oil changes, brake fluid changes and composites manufacturing, and our JB Weld products are always in great demand.
“We are proud to play a role in supporting the next generation Australian automotive engineers, and look forward to seeing how they excel into the future.”

Other experiences included kids’ face painting and activity zones, and raffles and door prizes, while a complementary barbeque kept the masses fed.
Bendix states that it is the only remaining brake manufacturer in Australia, and in his first visit to the Bendix facility, Nick Percat said he was impressed with the level of research, development and quality assurance that goes into every set of brake pads.
“Good braking plays a huge role on the race track, but it is even more important on public roads where conditions are not controlled and choosing the right brake package is paramount to overall driving safety,” Nick said.
“Many people probably don’t give much thought to brake pads, rotors and related, but it is comforting to know the effort that Bendix goes to in developing its range – there is a huge focus on local engineering, local testing and of course, local manufacturing which I saw firsthand (at the open day).”

AUSSIE F-SAE TEAM COMPLETES EUROPEAN COMPETITIVE TOUR
Motorsport is an unforgiving and addicting passion, leaving you always wanting more
It is this knowledge which inspired the team at Monash Motorsport (MMS), a Formula Student team based in Melbourne, to compete in four Formula Student competitions in Europe recently.
MMS’ latest car, M24, is completely student designed, built, tested, and raced, and the team was excited to compete overseas for the first time since 2018 to show the Europeans what Australians can do.
Starting the journey in Karlsruhe, MMS met its host team, KA-Raceing, which had offered to share its workshop.
Becoming quick friends, both teams were out on track almost every day preparing for the first competition at TT Circuit Assen; Formula Student Netherlands.
Competition was fierce with many teams bringing new innovations and well tested cars. However, MMS was able to put down consistent results across the competition, finishing the Endurance race and taking home fifth place overall.
With no time to rest and only one day until the next competition, the team set their sights on the Red Bull Ring and headed to Austria.
Considered the most competitive in the World Rankings tracker and the most fun by the teams, MMS says FS Austria lived up to expectations.
MMS had to push its car to the limit to stay competitive with the other teams, and this intense racing resulted in a mechanical failure halfway through the 22km endurance event, revealing a flaw in the team’s design that they were able to identify and fix before the next competition.
The team then headed to the ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Grounds in Hungary to compete at FS East, with MMS reporting it was a historic moment for the team as this was the first competition that included Driverless events.
Two bolts, a switch and some parameters is all that is required to change M24 from driven mode to autonomous mode, where it drives without human assistance.
When in autonomous mode the car maps out the track using a LiDAR sensor and navigates using a steering motor.
The team completed three out of the four driverless events successfully, however had a DNF in the most difficult driverless event: Trackdrive.
Securing its first podium in Europe by coming second in the Engineering Design Event, the team was excited to see its hard work paying off.
Finishing the endurance and improving its scores in all static events placed the team in sixth overall in both the Electric and Driverless Categories, out of a total of 32 and 13 teams respectively. With one competition to go, team morale was high with the goal of finishing the European Campaign strong.
A week of testing and maintenance work meant the car had never been in a better position to compete at the Hockenheimring in Germany.
Eighty four teams and more than 2000 students attended FSG, making it one of the largest competitions in Europe.
MMS reports it put up its best performance yet in the driverless events, being one of only three teams to finish all four events successfully.
Achieving first in the Cost and Manufacturing event, a first in the team’s history, and third in the Business Plan Presentation event, MMS had never been in a better position to go for the overall podium.
On a soaking Sunday afternoon, the wet tyres were on as M24 headed out to the Endurance track. Through heavy rain the drivers battled through their most difficult race yet.
Purposely designed to test the limits of cars, the FSG track incorporates a notorious “bump” which in turn found the limits of M24. Causing a DNF in the 14th out of 18 laps, the team did not finish the final Endurance.
While this was a heartbreaking outcome for MMS, the team reports it did not overshadow the incredible experiences, friends made, and valuable lessons the team learnt during their journey.

SUPERCARS LEGEND DRIVES FOCUS ON DEMENTIA
Dementia Australia was thrilled to be back for a second year as the nominated charity for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500
The Repco Supercars Championship, Penrite Racing, and Penrite Oil, the major sponsor and partner of the Sandown 500, nominated Dementia Australia as their charity partner as a tribute to Dementia Australia Patron, Supercars Legend, Hall of Fame inductee, and four-time Bathurst 1000 winner, Allan Moffat OBE, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Thank you to Penrite Oil, Penrite Racing, Supercars and most importantly to Allan Moffat and his network of supporters for continuing to give back to the racing community and helping all racegoers to know that if they are impacted by dementia – they are not alone,” Dementia Australia Chief Executive Officer, Professor Tanya Buchanan, said.
“I also thank Steve Grove of Grove Racing who partners with Penrite for his support and generous donation to Dementia Australia in honour of a close family member. The Grove family like so many Australians, has been impacted by dementia.
“Allan Moffat as our Dementia Australia Patron and his support network have been so generous in sharing his diagnosis and experience of living with Alzheimer’s disease to raise awareness in the community and vital funds for Dementia Australia at www.fundraising.dementia.org.au/allan-moffat.
“Allan first talked about his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in September 2019 and with his support network he has continued to raise awareness about dementia as a Dementia Australia Patron.”
Racing enthusiasts were treated to a tribute of the 1974 Ford XB Brut 33 Falcon on the 50-year anniversary of Allan’s win at Sandown, featuring the Dementia Australia logo.
“We were so pleased to be working again with Allan Moffat and Dementia Australia,” Penrite Oil Brand Manager, Jarrod Harding, said.
“It’s a privilege to be able to show our support for Allan, one of my heroes, and for Dementia Australia.
“With more than 421,000 Australians estimated to be living with dementia and more than 1.6 million people involved in their care, it is an important cause for everyone and especially close to our hearts here at Penrite Oil.
“As an Australian family-owned business with strong community values, we feel it’s important to give back and support those who need it most.
“As part of the partnership, Penrite Oil will be working with Allan Moffat and his support team to promote Dementia Australia’s work and to encourage community support for the charity’s activities.”
ELEVATE YOUR EVO’S PERFORMANCE
PPG says its new first-fifth Helical Cut Synchro Set is a smart solution
For owners of the Mitsubishi Evo 4-9, which first entered production in 1996, finding replacement parts for gearbox rebuilds is becoming increasingly challenging as many original Mitsubishi components are now obsolete.
Pfitzner Performance Gearbox (PPG) says it offers a practical solution with its Helical Cut Synchro Set, specifically designed for the fivespeed gearbox in the Evo 4-9 platform.

BILSTEIN EXTENDS B6 CAMPER PRODUCT RANGE
The shock absorber upgrade is now also possible for motorhomes based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
The booming camping market is opening up profitable additional business for workshops – especially as the OE suspension quickly reaches its limits with fully loaded motorhomes and camper vans.
Many campers complain about lacking ride comfort, poor stability in bends or annoying noise on long holiday trips.
Bilstein says it has developed the special B6 Camper shock absorbers that noticeably improve the ride comfort and safety of motorhomes and camper vans. This upgrade is now also possible for motorhomes based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, with the shock absorber expert Bilstein supplementing its camper product range by specially adjusted dampers for the Sprinter series 906, 907 and 910, covering another popular base vehicle for semiintegrated motorhomes and camper vans.
More damping force for safety and comfort
The Bilstein B6 Camper high-performance shock absorbers significantly improve handling of the van suspension, which originally had been designed for different loads.
To this end, the damping properties were extensively
adjusted to the parameters of motorhomes in road tests on the premises of ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg.
These are usually packed to the payload limit, have a higher centre of gravity and other protrusions or wheel bases.
When using special dampers, the optimum grip results in increased safety in crosswinds and bends as well as a more intense driving experience due to high traction and precise handling.
At the same time, campers can look forward to a more comfortable driving experience after a shock absorber upgrade: the reduction of driving noise through better damping contributes to this just as much as the optimised rolling behaviour on cobblestones and at level crossings, says Bilstein.
Additional business with the Bilstein B6 Camper
The new product line launched in 2022 was previously available for motorhomes based on the Fiat Ducato (from model year 2006) and identical vehicles from Citroën, Peugeot and Opel. Bilstein says its extended product range for more recent Sprinters from model series 906 to 910 with
front-wheel drive offers workshops the opportunity for even more additional business.
Bilstein says its Camper shock absorbers can be installed easily and without registration by vehicle professionals at a reasonable price, stating the installation effort is the same as for conventional shock absorbers.
Bilstein, which says it is the shock absorber expert, supports workshops that want to prepare themselves for Camper customers with special training sessions. For more information, visit www.bilstein.com

NEW FRONTIER WINCHES
From Ironman 4x4
Ironman 4x4 says its Frontier winch range is a dependable winch utilising a refined yet proven design that its customers have relied on for over a decade.
Synthetic and Wire Rope Option
Steel rope winches are as tough as they come; offering low maintenance and a line that is resistant to damage in the harshest conditions.
Synthetic ropes meanwhile are a fantastic alternative to steel rope as they are lighter and more pliable which makes them easier to handle and operate in a recovery situation.
The rope is designed to float and also reduces the weight on the front of your vehicle.
9,500lb and 12,000lb Options
Matching the right size winch to your vehicle is about more than just choosing horsepower.
To ensure you have the safest and most appropriate winch for your 4x4, Ironman 4x4 says the Frontier winch is available in both 9,500 and 12,000lb; synthetic and wire options.
Submersible to one metre
With an IP68 rating the winch can be submerged to one metre for up to 30 minutes without water getting into the mechanics, you can drive through rivers until your heart’s content knowing that your winch will be just fine, says Ironman 4x4.
Built-in Breather
Ironman 4x4 says this is a unique feature, with the one-way breather allowing air from inside the winch to escape when a hot winch gets cold. There’s a science to it, but Ironman 4x4 says the simple fact is this little feature will save the seals on your winch and stop water getting inside, even when a little mistreated.
Wired/Wireless Remote
Having a wireless remote adds great practicality and safety to a recovery, until you forget to charge it. It is at this point that a wireless remote that you can plug in, can’t be beat, says Ironman 4x4. Other key benefits include a five-year mechanical warranty, Three-Stage planetary gears, and up to 34ft per minute line speed.

TRADING THE OFFICE FOR ADVENTURE
The Airbag Man team put their products to the test in a special trip recently
Airbag Man recently took its R&D to another level, trading the office for adventure as a few team members headed up the East coast for every 4x4 enthusiast’s bucket list trip: Cape York.
It was an opportunity for field testing in some of Australia’s toughest terrain, pushing vehicles and products to their absolute limits over two weeks on the road.
Airbag Man Design and Applications Engineer, Matt Searle, said that from a tech perspective, it was about seeing all the small things in action.
“With our products, there’s so many little things that may not be noticeable to the general public, but that we spend so much time on, to make the experience and operation reliable and effortless,” Matt said.
“It was also great to see the products constantly operating in such harsh rocky and muddy conditions. This is something most of our customers won’t experience on a day-to-day basis, but it was great to be able to demonstrate the true capabilities of our products.”
For Marketing Manager Rhiannan Canfyn, it was an awakening about just how frequently they’d be reaching for the on-board air controls.
“I probably wasn’t expecting just how often we’d use the Intelliride: hitching and unhitching frequently, increasing our departure angles, site levelling with a rooftop, lowering to make loading/ unloading easier,” Rhiannan said.
“We literally had a different load every single day – trailer/no trailer; fully stocked with food, fuel and water for a week to completely unloaded; anywhere from two to four passengers; different amounts of camera gear, and so on.
“It is one thing to know about the features and promote them as part of my job, but to actually live it and see the benefits in action, brought home for me just how much of a game-changer on-board air control is when towing and off-roading.”
Meanwhile, Sales Manager Aaron Smith got to experience what it was like taking trucks from sealed road to off road.
“I’ve driven in plenty of trucks with different suspension setups but mostly on the highway,” Aaron said.
“When the chance came to ride in the All Terrain Warriors’ Isuzu I jumped at it, as these are no ordinary trucks and we were definitely not tackling ordinary roads.
“To experience firsthand how well they handled the different types of terrain with ease and how comfortable they were was just unbelievable.
“These trucks were loaded with gear plus towing a heavy trailer, and to see how well our leaf assist kits complimented these trucks was just amazing.”
Airbag Man has been a leader in air suspension in Australia since 1995, designing and manufacturing more than 1,200 vehicle-specific air suspension systems.
Airbag Man Air suspension is adaptable to existing factory suspension setups or aftermarket suspensions.
It says this versatility allows you to upgrade your suspension system without major modifications.
So, whether you are seeking to enhance your stock suspension or improve aftermarket components, Airbag Man says its air suspension seamlessly integrates and offers customisable solutions for your specific needs.
Airbag Man’s range of products also goes beyond the light commercial sector, with solutions on offer for Heavy Truck and Bus, Agriculture, Industrial, Custom Applications, Caravans, Trailers, and more.
