Welcome back — another Christmas and New Year has come and gone! I hope you enjoyed a refreshing break and are ready to embrace all that 2025 has to offer
The start of a new year is always a great time to set goals, focus on priorities, and take aim at the opportunities ahead. For the AAAA, 2025 is shaping up to be another year where we won’t take our foot off the accelerator.
The upcoming federal election presents a critical opportunity to ensure our industry’s voice is heard. Advocacy remains a top priority, especially with the commencement of the National Vehicle Emissions Standards (NVES) trading scheme on July 1. The scheme is likely to have significant flow-on effects for our industry in relation to the price and availability of diesel and petrol 4WD and light commercial vehicles going forward.
While we support NVES in principle, the current targets and timelines are highly ambitious. You’ve probably read reports of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales plateauing in Australia. The fact is, infrastructure gaps and vehicle lifecycle concerns remain significant barriers to the take-up of this technology. Forcing EV adoption without addressing these systemic issues is not the answer. We’ll continue advocating for a balanced and sustainable transition that works for the entire automotive ecosystem.
A critical part of this transition will be the aftermarket’s pivotal role in the service and repair of EVs. Independent workshops have been servicing and repairing hybrid and electric vehicles for many years already. However, we need to ensure the pathways for training and gearing up at the workshop level are well established as these vehicles gain a larger share of the car parc. This includes lobbying for government investment in training infrastructure to future-proof our industry.
We’re also closely monitoring the economic environment. Rising living costs and cautious
consumer sentiment have led to car owners delaying servicing and non-urgent repairs — a pattern we’ve seen before. As interest rates moderate, we anticipate a return to regular servicing, as delays in maintenance inevitably lead to more costly repairs down the track. Similarly, the purchase of accessories and car care is being impacted by negative consumer sentiment and is likely to follow the same cycle.
Another major focus this year – and one that’s been high on our list for some time – is tackling the skills shortage. The inclusion by the Federal Government late last year of many essential automotive trades as a high priority on the Core Skills Occupation List for skilled migration is a positive step. However, we must also ensure a strong pipeline of local talent through diversity initiatives and ongoing industry promotion. On the advocacy front, we’re also continuing to challenge the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads’ mandatory training directive for all Approved Inspection Station (AIS) members. The rushed, heavy-handed rollout of this policy undermines a system meant to enhance road safety. We are fighting for a fairer, more collaborative approach that supports – not penalises – our skilled technicians.
Speaking of strengthening our industry, we’re full steam ahead with preparations for Autocare 2025, Australia’s largest automotive training event. Taking place on June 20–21 in Brisbane, this event will feature a Workshop Management program for business owners and a Technical Training program for technicians and apprentices. We’ve worked hard to bring you some of the biggest international names in automotive training to join Australia’s best trainers, all under one roof (read more on page 8). Together, they’ll deliver invaluable sessions covering advanced diagnostics, J2534 programming, and more. Programming will be a focus of the technical training stream – perfectly aligning with the growing number of workshops now accessing full OEM vehicle information through the mandatory data-sharing scheme utilising the AASRA portal. Whether you’re a technician aiming to upskill or a business owner seeking growth strategies, Autocare has something for everyone. With worldclass trainers, cutting-edge topics, a quality trade show, and excellent networking opportunities all in one place, it promises to be a highly productive and valuable two days. I highly recommend Autocare to anyone looking to advance their career or expand their business.
Running alongside Autocare is the National Light Vehicle Modifications Summit, an essential forum bringing federal and state regulators together with vehicle modifiers. With a review underway of VSB14 (the National Code for Light Vehicle Modification), the push for a workable Gross Combination Mass (GCM) code in several states, as well as a review of the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) about to kick off, this summit will ensure our industry remains at the forefront of shaping the future of vehicle standards and regulations. To learn more about Autocare’s training programs, to purchase tickets at early bird prices, or attend the Modification Summit, visit www.autocare.org.au
All our work is driven by our passionate AAAA team, and with the support of our members, we can and are achieving great things together. If you’re not yet a member, joining the AAAA will strengthen our efforts to serve our industry and provide you with exclusive benefits, including access to our HR/IR hotlines and the powerful Car Parc Data tool and much, much more – valuable resources to help you grow and succeed in 2025. Let’s crack on and kick some goals!

No one is more vital to a vehicle owner than their local mechanic, says the AAAA
As Australia accelerates toward a clean energy future, the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) says the spotlight must expand beyond wind turbine engineers and solar panel installers to include local mechanics, who are critical to supporting the growing fleet of hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs).
By 2030, the AAAA says projections indicate that over 3.4 million hybrid and EVs will be on Australian roads.
To meet this demand, Australia will require more than 21,000 EV technicians – over a quarter of the entire automotive technician workforce.
This demand stems from the anticipated service requirements for these vehicles, translating to approximately 5.98 million services annually, based on an average of 1.76 services per vehicle.
Recent government initiatives have highlighted the automotive aftermarket industry’s pivotal role in the clean economy.
New OSCA occupation codes have been introduced for emerging roles such as EV technicians and hydrogen energy specialists.
While these codes acknowledge workforce changes and document skill shortages, they do not address the immediate need for skilled technicians, says the AAAA.
The latest report from Jobs and Skills Australia underscores that EV technicians are among the most in-demand roles in the clean economy, reflecting the urgent challenges facing our industry.
Although efforts are underway to upskill workers, it is crucial for state governments to align with federal leadership to tackle these issues effectively.
“Earlier this year, AAAA contributed to an inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
“During my appearance before the Parliamentary Inquiry, I emphasised that investment in EV
infrastructure must encompass all services an EV owner requires – no one is more vital to a vehicle owner than their local mechanic.”
While federal efforts have made strides in addressing skill shortages, some state governments are considering the imposition of excessive mandatory training requirements. Proposals in NSW and WA suggest an additional two to three years of training for servicing EVs.
“These proposals are detrimental to our industry and perpetuate outdated stereotypes,” Stuart said.
“Our automotive technicians undergo extensive training to conduct diagnostics and repairs; suggesting they lack knowledge about EVs is absurd.”
The automotive industry urges the federal government to lead in harmonising skill requirements for the clean energy workforce. A fragmented skills landscape would harm consumers and hinder progress toward a sustainable future.

The vehicle modifications industry is the unsung hero of the Australian automotive aftermarket
Consumers love us because we transform their standard vehicles into powerful machines capable of tackling Australia’s harsh climate.
Businesses rely on us to ensure their fleets are efficient, practical, and protect employee safety. Yet, vehicle manufacturers often don’t share the same enthusiasm for our great industry.
Even in 2025, many cling to the notion that their vehicles are flawless and that any performance upgrade is meddling with perfection.
And then there’s the government, which has often viewed us as rule-breakers rather than a critical contributor to the economy and national interest.
Thankfully, not all governments share this view. While some remain deeply entrenched in outdated perspectives, others are constructively collaborating with our industry to achieve better outcomes.
Our industry ensures that vehicles on Australian roads meet real-world needs. We make cars better, more functional, and fit for purpose. But this doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
For our industry to thrive, we need to stand together, support one another, and advocate for policies that keep us doing what we do best.
It was this axiom that gave birth to the inaugural Modifications Summit in 2023. This isn’t just another conference – it is the event where our industry acts and shapes its future.
Returning in June 2025 in Brisbane, the Summit remains the only forum where the modification community and regulators come together to network, strategise, and tackle big issues head-on.
The impact of our first Summit was undeniable. Off the back of our 2023 Modifications Summit our
industry came together and influenced significant changes to how ROVER operates.
It was also the birthplace of what is now the VSB 14 Technical Working Group. But the job is not done.
This year, the stakes are particularly high. Regulators, including the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, will be attending to engage directly with our industry.
Policies like the rollout of the ROVER system and the long-awaited review of VSB-14 is also on the table.
These are the issues that will shape the future of vehicle modifications in Australia. These sessions are an opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and make sure our industry’s voice isn’t just heard, it is appreciated and understood.
At the heart of this event is the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) and our commitment to supporting the independent aftermarket modifications industry.
Through tireless advocacy, we push back against misconceptions and argue for practical, balanced policies that keep people safe as well as keeping this nation moving forward.
But advocacy only works when we’re united, and that’s why your attendance at the Summit means so much.
When we show up in force, we send a clear and undeniable message to government that this industry matters.
From the workshops to the boardrooms, we’re driving innovation and solving real-world problems. Our collective strength is what ensures we’re not overlooked or underestimated.
Lesley Yates, AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy info@aaaa.com.au
And it’s not all hard work. The Summit is also a chance to recharge, connect, and celebrate what makes this industry so special.
It’s about spending time with people who understand our shared challenges and victories. It’s about brainstorming ideas, swapping stories, and just enjoying the company of others who are as passionate as you are.
So, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendar for June 2025, book your ticket to Brisbane, and join us at the National Light Vehicle Modifications Summit.
Whether you’re coming to learn, to advocate, or just to hang out with like-minded people, you’ll leave inspired, informed, and ready to take control of policy that impacts your business. Together, we can prove that we’re not the underdogs, we’re the backbone of Australia’s automotive innovation.

The AAAA welcomes a review which will provide a path forward for Australia’s automotive industry
The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) says it welcomes the review of the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), stating it offers a long-overdue opportunity to address critical challenges faced by the automotive industry.
Announced by the Honourable Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government, and led by Dr Warren Mundy, the review provides a chance to tackle systemic flaws in the existing ADR framework.
For meaningful outcomes, the AAAA says Dr Mundy and his team must engage extensively with the aftermarket sector, which plays a crucial role in ensuring in-service vehicle modifications meet ADR standards.
While the review’s focus on international harmonization is important, the AAAA firmly believes the scope must be expanded to better address Australia’s unique needs.
“ADRs have long been influenced by European regulations, but they no longer reflect the realities of the Australian market,” AAAA Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates, said.
“Consumer preferences have shifted dramatically toward US-style 4x4s, utilities, and recreational vehicles, yet our regulations remain stuck in a
European-centric framework that doesn’t align with Australia’s needs.”
State-by-state inconsistencies in ADR application, combined with onerous and unnecessary compliance requirements, stifle innovation without providing meaningful safety benefits.
The aftermarket sector has been forced to adapt, but change is urgently needed to prevent further disruptions to trade and innovation.
“Our industry is conducting more ADR compliance testing than ever before – often exceeding that of OEMs – due to the surge in second-stage vehicle modifications,” Lesley said.
“This review must address jurisdictional inconsistencies, streamline compliance, and ensure any new measures are evidence-based and proportionate to the actual risks involved.”
The AAAA is the only independent national body representing and supporting the automotive aftermarket industry, which includes manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers of automotive parts and accessories, tools and equipment, and providers of service, repair, and vehicle modifications.
AAAA is urging the government to resist entrenching Australia’s ADRs exclusively within the European framework, advocating instead for regulations that reflect the country’s evolving
The AAAA welcomes the announcement that many essential trades in the automotive aftermarket will remain on the Core Skills Occupation List
In May of 2024, the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) submitted a detailed response to Jobs and Skills Australia’s consultation of the Draft Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
During this period there was a significant concern that essential automotive trades might be removed from the list.
The AAAA’s submission, supported by key research from Fifth Quadrant, underscored the importance of CSOL in facilitating the recruitment of highly skilled migrants into the aftermarket workforce.
It also highlighted the potentially catastrophic consequences for the industry if key trades were excluded.
“This is a significant win for the automotive aftermarket industry,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.
“When the government announced potential limits to skilled migration earlier in the year many of our members feared that key trades would be removed from the CSOL.
“While migration alone cannot resolve the labour shortages the automotive industry faces, maintaining access to skilled migration is crucial.
“Removing these critical pathways would have further constrained many small businesses already grappling with workforce challenges.
“Our submission forecasted the substantial impact this could have had on workforce capacity.
“In 2023, our members completed approximately 24 million service and repair jobs on Australian vehicles – a number expected to rise to 40 million by 2030 as vehicle sales continue to grow.
“While we are committed to encouraging more Australians to pursue careers in the automotive
vehicle demographics, which now closely align with the United States.
“The ADRs are overdue for a refresh that balances harmonization with local relevance. The rules need to support, not hinder, the diverse range of modifications that define Australia’s world-class automotive industry,” Lesley said.
Submissions to the ADR Harmonization Review closed in late January.
Further underscoring its commitment to regulatory reform, the AAAA explains that it conducts the National Light Vehicle Modifications Summit, a unique forum bringing together aftermarket leaders, manufacturers, and regulators.
This summit facilitates collaboration on national vehicle standards, supports innovation in vehicle modification, and ensures compliance with evolving regulations.
Tickets for the summit are available at www.autocare.org.au/modsummit
industry, the reality is that domestic training alone cannot meet this increasing demand.
“A multifaceted approach, including skilled migration, is essential to sustaining our industry’s growth and to meet the growing demand of Australian vehicle owners.”
The AAAA says it extends its appreciation to the Department of Jobs and Skills for recognising the value of skilled migrants and ensuring the automotive aftermarket workforce can continue to thrive.
Industry members are reporting scams which implicate their business
The Motor Trade Association SA/NT (MTA) says it has received reports from multiple industry members that innocent people are being targeted by online scams which implicate their businesses. Businesses, such as automotive wrecking, dismantling and recyclers in South Australia are being impersonated online by scammers who are deceiving prospective buyers into paying for automotive parts that do not exist.
The scam primarily uses Facebook to advertise and sell automotive parts, often at below market prices. The scammers send doctored invoices using the letterhead and branding of legitimate businesses with ABN, phone number and bank details altered.
MTA Member Just Wrecking Toyota, based in Wingfield, reported they receive on average four enquiries per week from people enquiring about parts that have been ‘sold’ by the scammers. These incidents have been reported to South Australian Police and the Australian Government’s Scamwatch.
“One victim contacted us after spending their inheritance on a diesel engine for their son and received an invoice with our logo on it. It was very upsetting to tell them that it wasn’t purchased through us and that they had been scammed,” Just Wrecking Toyota’s Rod Harris said.
“Our reputation as a business is affected by scammers using our name and logo. We noticed that the scammer was using our business name and logo on the invoices, but the ABN was for an interstate business.”
The MTA recommends that consumers are vigilant, independently verifying that the business and listing is legitimate by using the contact information on the public website of a business. Scams should be reported to police and also to www.scamwatch.gov.au
This guide makes clear that competition law need not be a barrier for those considering sustainability collaborations that benefit the public
The ACCC recently released its final guide on sustainability collaborations and Australian competition law.
The guide is designed to increase businesses’ understanding of where competition law risks are not likely to arise when collaborating to improve sustainability outcomes.
It also provides information on what exemptions are available for business collaborations.
As Australia transforms to a more sustainable economy, the ACCC recognises that there may be instances where businesses seek to work together to address sustainability issues more effectively and rapidly.
“Businesses are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental impacts as Australia transitions to a more sustainable economy,”
ACCC Deputy Chair, Catriona Lowe, said.
“While there are a wide range of sustainability collaborations that do not breach competition laws, where there is risk of a potential breach, ACCC authorisation can provide legal protection to businesses who wish to work together to achieve better environmental outcomes.”
The ACCC has already authorised a wide range of conduct which has led to sustainability-related public benefits.
This includes industry stewardship schemes, joint buying of renewable energy, a voluntary code to address working conditions in supply chains, and collaboration to manage disruptions to recycling systems.
In 2024, around one third of the authorisation applications that the ACCC released decisions on included environmental public benefit claims. This guide makes clear that competition law need not be a barrier for those considering sustainability collaborations that benefit the public.
“Generally speaking, the ACCC may grant an authorisation in situations where the likely public benefit resulting from the proposed conduct outweighs any public detriment,” ACCC Commissioner, Liza Carver, said.
“These guidelines do not change the law but are intended to provide greater clarity to businesses on the laws relating to collaborations.
“They also explain what the existing competition authorisation regime offers.”
The ACCC recognises that sustainability is not limited to environmental issues and includes social issues such as antislavery and governance initiatives.
The ACCC can take a range of sustainabilityrelated public benefits into account when undertaking authorisation assessments. The public benefits from collaboration can include anything of value to society.
In addition to incorporating more examples of sustainability collaborations, further information has also been provided regarding the range of exemptions available to small businesses, including the class exemption and notification processes for collective bargaining. Generally, these exemption processes are simpler and quicker relative to the authorisation process.
The final guide is also accompanied by a ‘quick guide’ and a five-step checklist to help businesses quickly assess their competition law risk and exemption options.
The new quick guide also provides a range of practical examples of low-risk sustainability collaborations, such as joint research and development, information sharing, and joint supply chain activities.
“There are many sustainability arrangements that are unlikely to breach competition law,” Catriona said.
“When a collaboration does raise competition concerns, an exemption may be available. If you are considering applying for an exemption, we encourage you to contact the ACCC at an early stage.”
The ACCC states that it recognises that sustainability initiatives are continually evolving and may seek to review the guidance in future to ensure that it is fit-for-purpose.

The fund supports EV charging infrastructure for independent auto repairers
Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, has welcomed the Federal Government’s launch of the DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream, a $40 million initiative aimed at increasing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at automotive dealerships and independent EV repairers across Australia.
The grant, part of the broader DRIVEN Program, offers up to $2,500 per eligible smart EV charger installed, with a maximum rebate of $20,000 per site.
The program is designed to ensure widespread adoption, including in regional and remote areas, and will run until April 2028.
“This grant program is a game-changer for independent auto repairers,” Stuart said.
“The AAAA has long called for support to help small and medium automotive businesses play a leading role in Australia’s EV transition.
“The DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream directly addresses key financial barriers that often prevent independent repairers from investing in EV charging infrastructure.”
The AAAA highlighted the program’s critical role in ensuring the independent sector remains competitive and prepared to service Australia’s growing fleet of EVs.
“The EV transition isn’t just about selling more low emission vehicles – it is about creating an ecosystem that supports EV owners everywhere,
from metro areas to the most remote parts of the country,” Stuart said.
“This initiative helps level the playing field for independent repairers, ensuring they can provide the same high-quality service as larger dealerships.”
Stuart also emphasised the importance of the grant program in addressing Australia’s ambitious decarbonisation targets.
“Expanding EV charging infrastructure is vital in building consumer confidence in EVs, particularly in regional and remote areas,” Stuart said.
“Programs like this demonstrate the government’s recognition of the pivotal role our industry plays in decarbonising transport and meeting net-zero goals.”
While welcoming the initiative, the AAAA called for continued collaboration with the Federal Government to address other critical infrastructure and policy needs for the independent automotive repair sector.
“We see this as an important step forward, but there’s still work to be done,” Stuart said.
“We urge the Skills Minister, the Hon. Andrew Giles MP, to lead efforts to address in-service training and skills mandates.
“Without a cohesive national approach, fragmented state-based regulations will complicate operations for repairers – particularly larger groups working across multiple states – and worsen the existing skills shortage.
The company has received Australia’s First NTRO Certification for the re-use of HBEV Batteries
In late 2024 Infinitev was awarded Australia’s first-ever NTRO certification for the re-use of Hybrid Battery Electric Vehicle (HBEV) batteries in Australia, making it a pioneer in the field of battery re-manufacturing.
The certification was presented to Infinitev’s General Manager, Dickson Leow, by NTRO’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Caltabiano, at a ceremony held at NTRO’s Port Melbourne headquarters.
This recognition follows a rigorous and independent evaluation of Infinitev’s process for battery reuse by NTRO, ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards.
As electric and hybrid vehicles continue to gain traction, the need for sustainable and reliable battery reuse solutions has never been more critical.
By setting a high standard for battery reuse, Infinitev says it is contributing to the broader effort to reduce battery waste and optimising the lifecycle of advanced battery technologies.
Infinitev says it has always been at the forefront of innovation in this space and states this certification underscores its commitment to supporting the circular economy by extending the life of critical resources.
By meeting NTRO’s stringent criteria, Infinitev says it has demonstrated that its processes are not only technically sound but also aligned with
“Notably, both New South Wales and Western Australia are actively considering state-specific regulations, further highlighting the need for national leadership.”
The AAAA also welcomed the government’s recent incentive program for apprentices but called for its extension beyond housing construction trades.
“If the goal is to encourage more Australians to pursue trade careers, support for automotive apprenticeships is a clear winner,” Stuart said.
“We need to see policy initiatives that reflect the critical role of the automotive sector in the economy and its importance in supporting the transition to EVs.
“The skills shortage is one of the most significant challenges facing our industry, and targeted apprenticeship incentives could make a world of difference.”
The AAAA encourages all eligible businesses to apply for the DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream. For more information, visit www.business.gov.au/grantsand-programs/driven-charger-rebate-stream
the broader goals of sustainability and circular economy principles.
This certification marks the beginning of a new chapter for Infinitev and the wider industry, with the company stating it is excited to continue its work with NTRO and other stakeholders to drive the adoption of high standards in (BEV) battery reuse.

A memorable Christmas luncheon marked the occasion for the group
The 7 Year Club celebrated its 51st Anniversary in style with a sold out luncheon that left a lasting impression on its attendees late last year.
For those readers who don’t know about this club, it gets the seven from the seven Aftermarket men who decided 51 years ago that there should be an annual Christmas luncheon where working and retired Automotive Aftermarket members could get together in a social situation and just enjoy the fellowship of others in the industry while also providing a function for those retired persons to catch up and meet old friends.
Following an article in the July edition of this magazine inviting members of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) and
their partners to join the celebration, the 2024 event garnered overwhelming support, with every seat filled and a waiting list of hopefuls.
Held in a festive atmosphere in the Conservatory at Carman’s Fine Foods in Huntingdale in Victoria, organisers state the luncheon was a testament to the camaraderie and shared history of retired Aftermarket professionals, including three past AAAA Presidents.
One of the highlights of the event was the keynote address by guest speaker Lyn Boyes KC, a retired judge with an illustrious career which extended beyond the courtroom to include time spent as a thoroughbred breeder, racehorse owner, and winery proprietor with interests in cattle farming.
Lyn’s address captivated the audience with engaging anecdotes from his legal career and adventures in horse racing, with his stories offering a unique blend of humour, insight and inspiration.
The event also celebrated the enduring legacy of the 7 Year Club with a special presentation to two founding members: Brian Davies, renowned for his contributions through the Brian’s Speed Shop chain, and fellow aftermarket pioneer, Chris Jones of Durable Auto Spares. Both Brian and Chris were appointed as life members of the club.
‘Finding Frank’ tells the inspiring story of a small Australian business made good
The origin story of the Terrain Tamer brand is one that has been told many times, but now the company is retelling the story in a new and unique way, through an illustrated children’s book. Those who know the brand, will be familiar with the story of how Frank Hutchinson started his business in 1969 with only $300 in his pocket, and how he started supplying 4WD parts to the likes of Bill King in the mid-1970s.
Bill, who started what is now the AAT Kings Tour Company, would purchase parts that had been strengthened by Frank, to help ensure a safe return for the passengers of his tours along the rugged tracks of central Australia.
The inspiring story of a small Australian business made good has been told throughout a national radio and television campaign throughout 2024, and now Terrain Tamer have turned it into a beautifully illustrated book, recounting the tale in a simplified language for younger minds to read and learn.
Written by Terrain Tamer’s Marketing Manager, Skye Kottachchi, and illustrated by Mandy Foot, who has an extensive portfolio in the storybook industry, the book is titled “Finding Frank.”
It was developed after several time-poor workshop owners mentioned in passing how important their nightly story time is in allowing them to reconnect with their young families after a busy day of work. The book tells the story of a man named Bill who is pointed in the direction of Frank by multiple

The Australian automotive market achieved a significant milestone in 2024, with a record 1,237,288 new vehicles delivered
Following a closely contested race, the Ford Ranger emerged as the top-selling vehicle, with 62,593 units sold, beating out Toyota’s SUVmarket leading RAV4 (58,718 units). This is despite the RAV4 topping the sales charts for seven out of 12 months.
Despite Ranger’s overall leadership, SUVs remained the standout category with a 57 percent market share.
Notably though, this was largely driven by the success of hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs, which posted impressive year-on-year increases of 89 percent and 107 percent, respectively.
At a brand level, Asian manufacturers continue to dominate the Australian automotive market, taking nine spots in the top 10.
While Japanese vehicles, led by Toyota, remain at the forefront, a significant shift is visible. Chinesemade cars have surpassed those from Korea for the second consecutive year. This marks a pivotal moment for the Australian market, with a range of other Chinese manufacturers having already announced plans for market entry.
Looking back though, we can see how the top brands have already shifted. While four of the top five (Toyota, Ford, Mazda,
and Mitsubishi) have held strong, new entrants, MG, Isuzu Ute and GWM have cemented their positions within Australia’s top ten by sales.
Among the brands they replaced, Holden’s market exit logically knocked it off the list, but Volkswagen and Honda are both still active at lower volumes (ranked 12th and 20th respectively in 2024).
Similarly, despite total sales increasing by 16 percent from 2019, just three brands have kept up with this growth rate, with the rest giving up share to newer entrants.
Looking to longer-term trends, Australian automotive preferences are gradually shifting away from internal combustion (ICE) vehicles, with growing adoption of vehicles powered by alternative fuel sources (hybrid, PHEV, BEV, etc).
In the span of five years, passenger vehicles have seen a significant drop in ICE sales (from 93 percent in 2019, to 62 percent in 2024). A similar trend is evident for SUVs from 98 percent ICE share in 2019, to 71 percent in 2024).
Light commercial vehicles are currently the outlier here; while internal combustion engines remain dominant, 2024 marked the first year sales of electric and hybrid light commercial vehicles surpassed 2,000 units, with further growth
predicted in coming years given the new models that have already been introduced or announced. Looking into the future: 2025 and beyond
As the market evolves, competition is set to intensify.
The entry of new, (largely) Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers will continue to disrupt the landscape, but it will take time for them to build significant share.
In the short to medium term, ‘traditional’ brands are likely to remain prominent, selling significant volumes of petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles.
From an aftermarket perspective, this knowledge can provide a level of certainty to those focusing on ICE power trains.
The EV revolution is accelerating, but it takes a long time for EV sales to translate into significant share within a 20M vehicle car parc.

Castrol has announced a new ‘Hybrid Horizons’ virtual business conference to explore the future of hybrid mobility
Castrol says ‘Hybrid Horizons’ will be a groundbreaking virtual conference focusing on the innovations, insights and emerging opportunities shaping the evolution of hybrid vehicles.
The free-to-join conference will run from 25 February to 1 March 2025, and is available for selected Castrol customers globally. It will feature contributions from leading authorities in hybrid technology, including representatives from major vehicle manufacturers, technology firms and top-tier motorsport teams.
Castrol says this carefully curated event will connect diverse audiences, from workshop owners to OEM strategists, sharing insights and expertise that will help drive hybrid mobility forward. The conference will kick off on 25 February with a live session hosted from Audi’s state-of-theart facility for the Formula 1 project in Neuburg, Germany, offering a behind-the-scenes sneak peek into the brand’s power unit development. Participants will then have online access to a comprehensive array of valuable on-demand conference content, available until 1 March 2025, which will include panel discussions, round tables and new market insights, allowing participants to build their own unique ‘playlist’ of conference sessions and materials most relevant to them.
Castrol is hosting the conference as part of its global hybrid product development strategy.
Last year, the company launched HYSPEC, a new technical standard for its range of engine oils for hybrid vehicles.
Castrol says HYSPEC is a new benchmark for measuring the performance1 of Castrol’s engine oils for hybrids across the critical areas of contaminants, engine intermittency and system efficiency.
Castrol Brand and Product Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Jan Willink, described the
conference as a unique opportunity for attendees to hear from industry leaders who are helping to drive the future of hybrid mobility.
“At Castrol, we are committed to ensuring our customers are well-informed and across emerging industry developments that could impact their business,” Jan said.
“‘Hybrid Horizons’ is a testament to this commitment and will provide attendees with unparalleled insight on hybrid technology from those who are shaping the future of the industry.
“Whether it is hearing from OEM’s, elite motorsport teams, or Castrol’s own expert technologists, the innovative customisable agenda is intended to entertain and most importantly, inform.”
The content ‘playlist’ for the virtual conference will be spread across four distinct zones: Insight, Innovation, Tech and Motorsport. Notable sessions and topic areas will include:
• An exclusive tour of Audi’s Formula 1 facility in Neuburg and an introduction to the people shaping power unit development.
• How a changing global regulatory landscape may influence the future development of hybrid technologies.
• How social media can be employed most effectively to inform and guide hybrid audiences.
• How Gen Z and women view the future of mobility, and the priority areas for them.
Castrol states it has spent more than 25 years researching, testing, and reporting on the characteristics of hybrids, as well as conducting a year-long road trial using mild, full, and plug-in hybrids to capture over two billion pieces of data.
Combined, the cars travelled over 300,000 kms for more than 7,000 hours – the equivalent of driving 24/7 for more than 42 weeks.
Additionally, Castrol has worked closely with
vehicle manufacturers to develop hybrid testing techniques to enable them to constantly refine their vehicles and improve performance, and has also worked closely with motorsport teams to test engine oils under the toughest conditions.
To validate its findings for HYSPEC, Castrol commissioned a third-party consultancy and external experts to conduct research with service centres, fleet operators and car owners to deliver a wider perspective on global markets.
The launch of Castrol’s HYSPEC standard comes at a time when the demand for hybrid technology continues to grow – by 2025, a quarter of cars sold globally are expected to have a hybrid powertrain2.
As such, Castrol says its HYSPEC standard will support both car workshops and their customers in identifying the most suitable Castrol engine oil for their hybrid car.
While Castrol’s portfolio already includes many hybrid-ready engine oils, the company explains that those badged with the new HYSPEC logo demonstrate at least 25 percent1 benefit against the HYSPEC standard, across the critical areas of contaminants, engine intermittency and system efficiency.

Autogroup Solutions says it is leading the way in this area
When it comes to driving functions of vehicles, safety is always top priority.
In support of this notion is vehicle software, which must process data from sensors such as cameras, automatic emergency braking systems, automatic navigational systems and blind spot detection in real time to make safe decisions around the control of the vehicle.
Calibrating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) correctly is of major importance, as the accuracy of calibration has dire consequences if not done to OEM standards.
The acquisition by the MotorOne Group in mid2024 of ADAS calibration specialist business, Autogroup Solutions, reportedly highlights the growing industry concerns over the impact of poorly calibrated ADAS on vehicle reliability and occupant safety.
“We’re talking calibration issues that can cause erratic vehicle behaviour such as unexpected stops and unexplained lane changes,” Autogroup Solutions General Manager, Gonzalo Haddad, said.
“Despite these risks, many in the motor retail industry remain unaware of the implications of incorrect ADAS calibrations, as few technicians possess the specialist knowledge to perform strict OEM standards compliance, let alone having a thorough understanding of the potential safety risks posed by improper adjustments.”
These concerns are at the very heart of the Autogroup Solutions business, which was founded in 2015 by Gonzalo and commenced operations out of a hi-tech installation/calibration centre in Melbourne’s southern suburbs.
Autogroup Solutions meticulously drills down
and genuinely diagnoses each vehicle to OEM compliant standards with what is still considered a niche skillset.
Gonzalo started out as an auto electrician working in the smash repair industry. Now backed by MotorOne Group with insurance companies as major clients, he and his team are considered experts in this field, having built a team of highly skilled technicians which now mans a fleet of 15 mobile vans, with each one equipped with sophisticated ADAS calibration systems.
With a blueprint expansion plan and MotorOne’s backing, the business has now expanded to Brisbane with a roadmap on the drawing board to move into New South Wales and Tasmania during 2025.
MotorOne also identified the overarching market need for ADAS calibration as a significant growth opportunity given the increasing number of ADASequipped vehicles entering the Australian market year on year and the gap in the required skillset at current repairers.
As such, Autogroup Solutions was an instant fit with MotorOne’s growing Autobody panel shop network that’s already established throughout the eastern seaboard and already handling a significant portion of calibration work for customers, who are primarily major insurers.
Unquestionably, vehicle repairs post accidents are becoming more and more complex and especially challenging for smaller repairers who may not have all of the required equipment to undertake repairs in this specialist field.
Gonzalo explained that more and more service technicians are struggling to diagnose and resolve these issues, leading to time wasting and increased costs at the dealership level and for repair shops.
“The complexity of ADAS systems requires specialised equipment, which can cost around $100,000,” Gonzalo said.
“There is significant importance on getting this right, given so many system issues that affect driver safety are linked to the failure to recalibrate systems after the panel repair process.
“ADAS calibration services typically range from $350 to $500 per vehicle and involve setting up laser sensors on a level floor to ensure proper alignment, followed by a test drive to verify the vehicle’s computer systems are correctly adjusted.
“In more complex cases, vehicles are taken to one of our workshops, where advanced diagnostic tools and connections to OEM systems enable technicians to access calibration codes and perform more detailed checks”.
The demand for these recalibrations is only growing and according to Gonzalo, 85 percent of new vehicles now feature technologies like lanekeeping assist, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
By 2025, that number is expected to be closer to 98 percent, notes Gonzalo, who says this illustrates that repairing post-accident what is now close to 90
percent of vehicles on the road requires significant expertise, as even small misalignments during repairs can lead to ADAS malfunctions.
As the automotive industry continues to integrate more advanced technologies, the importance of proper ADAS calibration will only increase, with businesses like Autogroup Solutions playing a key role in ensuring vehicle safety and functionality.
Examples of these technologies include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking Systems (AEB), Automatic Navigational Systems, Blind Spot Detection, Collision Avoidance Systems, Driver Drowsiness Detection, Electric Vehicle Warning Systems, Forward Collision Warnings, Lane Departure Warnings, Night Detection Devices, Parking Assistance Technology, Pedestrian Presence Warnings, Rain Sensors, Smart Speed Adaptation, Surround-View Systems, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and Traffic Sign Recognition. Each of these complex computerised functions, which are unique to each OEM, can be damaged in an accident and require specialist expertise to
properly diagnose and perform ADAS calibrations to reset and fine-tune settings.
When comparing Autogroup Solutions to other calibration business’, Gonzalo says the difference fundamentally comes down to two things.
“Firstly, our offering around ‘Remote Support,’ which essentially is a vehicle diagnostic system that leverages off advanced OEM hardware and software to connect vehicles via a cellular network (or the internet),” Gonzalo explains.
“This allows Autogroup Solutions to efficiently access and analyse diagnostic data from anywhere in Australia, providing swift and accurate solutions without the need for an on-site visit. This of course compliments our fixed site and mobile option.
“Secondly, we offer an ‘EV Battery Health Check.’
Experts estimate that the average EV battery ‘could last’ for around 300,000 kilometres, but some manufacturers promise a much longer lifespan.
“For example, it is said that Tesla claims to be close to developing a battery that can last for a million miles.
“Regardless, what’s important here is a consumer’s trust in having an accurate and credible battery health check which is of paramount importance, specifically in the case of buyers looking for reliable performance records when considering purchasing a pre-owned EV vehicle.
“Included in the testing procedure is a comparison of kilometres driven to estimated range, a battery discharge test (also known as capacity or load testing) and checks on voltage reading.
“On completion, Autogroup Solutions issue a certified and comprehensive written report, giving customers peace of mind they’re not purchasing a vehicle with severe limitations on battery endof-life.
“The bottom line is: at Autogroup Solutions, we are very much open for business. With our fixed sites, mobile service or on occasion, remote calibration services, we are experts in this field.”

These kits are new to the market, from Disc Brakes Australia
For both mechanics and drivers, reliable brakes are non-negotiable – especially when the stakes are high.
Whether it is towing a caravan packed with family gear, navigating steep mountain roads, or handling the unpredictable demands of off-road adventures, having confidence in your brakes can make all the difference.
Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) says it understands this and states its Drum-to-Disc Conversion Kit is “the ultimate solution for modernising outdated braking systems.”
Designed to meet the needs of mechanics and vehicle owners alike, DBA says this kit combines top-tier performance, durability, and ease of maintenance; ensuring safer, smoother journeys for everyone.
Why make the switch to disc brakes?
DBA says that while drum brakes may have been the standard on small cars and entry-level models for years, they’re no match for the performance and safety of disc brakes – especially when it counts.
With DBA’s Drum-to-Disc Conversion Kit, DBA says drivers and mechanics gain access to:
• Unmatched stopping power: imagine towing a fully loaded trailer down a steep descent and feeling complete control, knowing your brakes won’t let you down. Disc brakes generally deliver shorter stopping distances and consistent performance over drum brakes, giving drivers and passengers peace of mind on every trip.
• Enhanced heat resistance: long drives, heavy loads, and steep terrain can push brakes to their limits. Thanks to the enhanced metallurgy of DBA’s 4000 Series T3 Rotors and superior pads friction material, this kit resists brake fade, so you can rely on smooth, dependable stops no matter how demanding the journey, says DBA.
• Superior wet weather performance: rain, mud, or creek crossings? Unlike drum brakes that hold water and compromise braking ability, disc brakes shed water quickly, keeping you in control when conditions turn rough.
Whether you’re a driver looking to protect your loved ones or a mechanic wanting to offer clients the best solution, DBA says this kit is designed for confidence in any situation.
For mechanics, DBA says its conversion kit makes servicing vehicles faster and easier, while for drivers, it means less time in the shop and more time on the road, thanks to:
• Quick and simple inspections: disc brakes are far easier to check and service compared to drum brakes, with accessible pads that simplify replacements.
• Self-adjusting design: unlike drum brakes, which require frequent manual adjustments, disc brakes adjust themselves, saving time for mechanics and money for vehicle owners.
• Ease of installation: each kit comes with detailed installation instructions, simplifying the installation process thus saving workshops valuable time.
DBA says it isn’t just about convenience either, stating it is also about reliability and predictability. DBA’s conversion kits are fully compliant with Australian Design Rules (ADR), and it states mechanics can know they will save time on brake installation and servicing, while drivers can enjoy the confidence of knowing their brakes are built for the long haul.
An upgrade which brings confidence
Australia’s roads and trails are some of the most challenging in the world. Therefore, DBA says its Drum-to-Disc Conversion Kit isn’t just a brake upgrade – it is peace of mind; and it is the confidence of knowing your brakes will work flawlessly when towing the family boat, navigating unpredictable terrain, or simply getting through the daily grind.
DBA explains that “for mechanics, it is an easyto-install, high-quality solution which satisfies customers and builds trust. For drivers, it is a ‘life-changing improvement’ that ensures safety, reduces maintenance headaches, and delivers reliable performance day after day.”
“Don’t wait until outdated drum brakes hold you back. Upgrade to DBA’s Drum-to-Disc Conversion Kit and feel the difference every time you stop,” adds DBA.

The critical role of cooling system maintenance
Maintaining your vehicle’s cooling system is more crucial than ever to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
The cooling system’s primary function is to regulate engine temperature, preventing overheating that can lead to severe engine damage.
A well-maintained system helps to preserve engine power, improve fuel efficiency, and extend the lifespan of critical components.
The heart of any cooling system lies in its ability to manage temperature fluctuations. As the engine operates, it generates an immense amount of heat. Without an efficient cooling mechanism, MAHLE warns these temperatures can rise rapidly, causing parts to warp or seize, leading to costly repairs and vehicle downtime.
Regular checks and maintenance are essential to ensure the coolant level is sufficient, the radiator is clear of debris, and the thermostat is functioning properly.
Neglecting these aspects can result in reduced engine efficiency and higher operating temperatures, diminishing performance.
One of the key components in the cooling circuit is the water pump, which circulates coolant throughout the engine.
Over time, the pump can wear out or become clogged, reducing coolant flow and ultimately causing overheating.
The radiator plays an equally critical role by dissipating the heat absorbed by the coolant, preventing the engine from reaching dangerous temperatures. If the radiator becomes clogged or the coolant is not adequately maintained, the system’s ability to cool the engine effectively is compromised.
It is also important to note that coolant fluid itself needs to be replaced periodically.
Old or contaminated coolant loses its effectiveness, leading to corrosion inside the cooling system and a decrease in heat transfer efficiency.
“Our team consists of experts in the bearing and the automotive industry with extensive knowledge and longstanding partnerships with global suppliers.
“Built to meet the needs of mechanics and backed by trusted brands, our kits provide the ultimate solution for timing belt replacement, ensuring every job is done right the first time.”
BW offers an extensive range of Bearings and Driveline products specifically designed for the Australian and New Zealand markets. With a minimum warranty of two-years or 40,000 km for most BW products.
BW states that its products “are designed for direct fit and to perform as well as the original equipment part, if not better.”
For more information about the BW range, visit www.bwproducts.com.au
This can result in the need for expensive repairs or even premature engine failure.
MAHLE warns that routine cooling system maintenance should not be overlooked, stating that simple steps such as checking for leaks, flushing the coolant, and ensuring the radiator cap is functioning correctly can go a long way in preventing expensive engine damage.

With this point front of mind, Alemlube explains it has teamed up with a long-standing partner to design and bring to market a functional, aesthetically pleasing, new solution, and is now excited to present the Rewinda Series of hose, cable and barrier reels.
With proprietary mouldings and tooling, and a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship supporting the products, Alemlube says you can confidently install and use Rewinda Series Reels in your workshop or manufacturing facility.
The versatile lineup includes 20m compressed air reels, 15m hot wash reels, 15m high-pressure water reels, four different welding reels and 15m chemical, herbicide and pesticide reels, plus two 30m barrier reels and two handy cable reels – all part of the same family of products.
Keeping your workshop clean and uncluttered allows you to move around safely avoiding trip hazards and obstacles – with a clever variety of mounting systems, you can easily fix the reels to walls or ceilings, freeing up valuable floor space.
Rewinda reels can also be vehicle mounted. With sturdy locking pins, Alemlube says you can be sure that the reel will stay securely in place, making it perfect for all your mobile applications.
“Using Rewinda reels is a breeze, thanks to their clever design,” Alemlube Capital Workshop Equipment Product Manager – Australia and New Zealand, Stuart Grimwade, said.
“The heavy-duty steel swivel allows you to turn the reel up to 180 degrees, giving you great flexibility in how you work.
“Plus, with the new and innovative stop-at-anypoint latching mechanism, you can easily secure the hose at exactly the right length every time.
“Improvements to the main spring return have been made so you can count on safe operation year on year and with the spring assembly at the centre of the reel it is a critical component.
“The new speed rewind control system, as available on all models of the hose and cable reels, ensures
that they retract smoothly and steadily, keeping everything safe, manageable and WH&S compliant.
“With these ergonomic design features, using the reels is quick and easy; it helps you maintain safe work best practices and boosts your workshop efficiency.
“Enjoy a more streamlined workshop with Rewinda.”
Alemlube explains that Rewinda hose reels are equipped with Gen3 polymer hose assemblies that deliver “ultimate flexibility while staying completely kink-free under pressure.”
“This feature provides consistent compressed air flow and pressure without obstructions and with no interference to your optimal performance,” Stuart said.
“By keeping hoses free of kinks, you will also reduce downtime and minimise the need for repairs and replacements.”
Hose longevity is further enhanced through proper hose storage.
Another key feature is Rewinda’s sliding guide system which ensures the hose returns evenly on to the barrel assembly, reportedly eliminating the chance of hose bunching on one side of the reel and thereafter not being able to retract back on to the barrel assembly.
In the same family of reels are two danger and caution barrier reels, both storing and retrieving 30 metres of barrier creation fabric cloth.
“The demarcation between your workshop zones is easily managed with Alemlube’s Rewinda Barrier reels,” Stuart said.
“Temporary barriers identify dangerous areas to restrict access or limit foot traffic; these highly visible guides are essential in managing your workplace and employee safety.
“At 30m in length, the Rewinda barrier reels are also the optimum choice for large freight company receiving and dispatch docks, mine and quarry sites, workshops, building sites and even residential apartments that require safety barriers over larger areas.
“The reels are fitted with a hook so the system can be coupled to your existing fit out or use the durable eyelets to securely fasten the reel to masonry or wood.”
Third and finally, cable reels complement the Rewinda range.
“Retracting smoothly, these reels prevent tangling or damage to your electrical cables and minimise the trip hazards associated with loose cabling in a workshop or manufacturing facility,” Stuart said.
“There are 15amp 240V and 10amp 240V cable reels available, with both capable of storing and retrieving 20 metres of cable.
“Keep your workshop and fabrication facilities organised, and most importantly safe, for you and your employees.”
With longevity in mind, Alemlube says it designed and engineered the Rewinda Series of hose, barrier and cable reels in a modular design to make servicing and maintenance of the reels a simple and straight forward proposition.
“The reels can be easily inspected for quick upkeep, ensuring your workshop operates effectively and safely, and thereby minimising downtime and maximising productivity,” Stuart said.
“Also, as a focus on sustainability increases, Rewinda leads the way with eco-friendly reel covers made from recyclable polypropylene materials.
“By using a retractable hose system designed to minimise wear and tear, organisations can significantly cut down on unnecessary waste and the need for frequent replacements.
“With an unwavering commitment to quality, each Rewinda component is built for a long service life as confirmed by Alemlube’s 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship.
“When quality, performance and durability are priorities, Alemlube’s Rewinda Series of hose, barrier and cable reels are the perfect choice for your hose and cable storage and retrieval needs.”

ZF presented two remanufacturing initiatives at Automechanika Frankfurt
With the remanufacturing of used vehicle parts conserving resources and avoiding CO2 emissions compared to the production of new parts, ZF says it forms an essential part of its sustainability strategy.
With the new ZF REMAN label, ZF Aftermarket explains it has increased remanufactured product visibility across all its premium brands.
As the return of used parts is the decisive cornerstone for remanufacturing, ZF Aftermarket says it has also optimised a customer-friendly process for reverse logistics, ‘CorExpedia.’
ZF Aftermarket presented both solutions at Automechanika Frankfurt 2024.
ZF Aftermarket says the new ZF REMAN label reflects the increasing importance of sustainability for customers across the automotive aftermarket.
It says sitting behind this are industrial remanufacturing processes, which take place at ZF’s own plants worldwide to guarantee the same quality and functionality of new parts, but with avoided raw material consumption along the supply chain.
ZF Aftermarket says every remanufactured part undergoes tests and checks to ensure that it fulfils the same requirements and has the functionality of a new part.
The parts are not just cleaned and repaired, but are brought up to the current series standard; an industrial production standard.
ZF says its factories, ISO and IATF certified, bring the OE heritage and know-how to the reman facilities, where worn single elements are replaced and, if necessary, improved components are retrofitted to increase performance and service life.
The warranty period for ZF REMAN parts is identical to that for new parts or even longer, with ZF Aftermarket stating this gives workshops and end customers the certainty that they can rely on ZF REMAN parts in the same way as on new parts.
CorExpedia: an internet-based return platform for used parts
The basis for remanufacturing is the return of used parts (cores) from workshops via wholesalers to the manufacturer.
This so-called reverse logistics process must be as simple, fast, and as efficient as possible so that garages and distributors can easily use it.
ZF Aftermarket’s solution to meet these challenges is CorExpedia, which it explains is an intuitive and user-friendly online platform for returning cores globally.
Initially devised for returning WABCO branded parts in Europe, ZF Aftermarket says CorExpedia has already been proven to significantly improve return efficiency.
It states the tool is easy to use, and the process very fast, for example when it comes to deposit refunds.
And now, ZF Aftermarket is gradually rolling out the concept to its entire portfolio.
With the wider launch this year, selected SACHSbranded used parts can be returned via CorExpedia, for the first time.
The portal can be used on any internet-enabled device and only a few clicks are required to organise a return.
Clear user instructions can be found in the CorExpedia portal, including return guidelines and specified details about part return condition; and practical analysis functions of the portal make it possible to monitor the status of returns and create reports.
There is also clear information on deposit refunds. Of particular note, the functionality known as the ‘core bank’ clearly shows the number of parts purchased from the returned cores and enables users to determine at a glance whether they have already exhausted their return potential.
“With ZF REMAN and CorExpedia, we want to offer customers even easier access to our remanufactured products,” ZF Aftermarket Head of Remanufacturing Strategy and Business Development, Tomasz Galazka, said.
“Our goal is to continuously expand our remanufactured parts portfolio contributing more significantly to resource conservation and emission reduction.”

This ‘transparent tech’ from Continental monitors the vital parameters of passengers
In January, Continental presented a display novelty at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas which recently won a CES Innovation Award Honoree.
The Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display tracks the vital parameters of persons inside the vehicle using a camera and a laser projector installed behind the dashboard display to support a wide range of safety and comfort functions.
The technology detects the passengers inside the car through a high-resolution OLED screen, meaning it is completely invisible to the naked eye.
The innovative display offers a lot of other advantages also – for example, it features 3D distance mapping to optimise the deployment of airbags and other restraint devices and check the correct fastening of seat belts.
In addition, the Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display, which was developed together with trinamiX, a leading provider of biometric solutions and BASF subsidiary, enables contactless monitoring of vital parameters such as heart rate to identify stressful
situations or an impending medical emergency in the driver’s seat.
A corresponding safety feature installed in the vehicle can be triggered if needed to protect the occupants as well as other road users.
“Our expertise allows us to seamlessly integrate pioneering technologies into our display solutions and thus enhance the range of functions offered and create added value,” Continental Head of the User Experience (UX) business area, Pavel Prouza, said.
In the run-up to the Consumer Electronics Show, described as “the world’s preeminent technology trade show,” Continental received the CES Innovation Award Honoree in the “Vehicle Tech and Advanced Mobility” category for its intelligent display solution.
“The award underlines our extensive technical expertise in user experience,” Pavel said.
“By installing the camera and laser dot projector invisibly behind the display, we will unlock completely new creative possibilities for designers of car interiors and boost acceptance among users.”
The Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display captures a number of key data points that are relevant for interpreting driver monitoring systems. It therefore provides an innovative all-in-one solution that is invisible to the naked eye, says Continental.
A 1.5 MP near infrared camera and an eye-safe laser dot projector are embedded behind the highresolution OLED screen to monitor vital parameters.
The underlying biometric imaging technology was developed by technology partner trinamiX. The process captures the reflections of the light points emitted by the laser dot projector in the invisible light spectrum to derive results with the help of algorithms based on artificial intelligence.
The solution also provides other relevant information, including the distance of the driver to the cockpit or the classification of textile materials, which are needed to identify whether the seat belt has been fastened correctly.
“Our biometric imaging technology is ideally suited for use in car interiors,” trinamiX Director Consumer Electronics North America and Europe, Wilfried Hermes, said.
“The ability to monitor vital signs and other relevant passenger data without physical interaction and using just a single hardware module is unique on the market. We are delighted to be able to offer this solution together with Continental.”

BW presents the following information as “A Mechanic’s Guide”
Centre bearings are crucial for maintaining driveline stability, but when they fail, they can cause persistent issues which frustrate both mechanics and vehicle owners.
In this article, the experts at BW discuss how to identify common problems, understand their root causes, and explain how BW can support you with solutions tailored to your needs.
Key issues mechanics face with centre bearings
• Persistent vibrations: even after replacing components like U-joints, vibrations can persist if the centre bearing is overlooked. Worn rubber or internal bearing damage often leads to this issue. BW says its centre bearings feature high-grade rubber mounts which absorb vibrations “more effectively, ensuring a smoother ride and reducing stress on the driveshaft.”
• Clunking or misalignment: a damaged centre bearing can misalign the driveshaft, creating light clunking noises during acceleration or deceleration. Left unchecked, this can strain other driveline components, leading to costly repairs. Manufactured to precise OEM specifications, BW explains that its centre bearings ensure “perfect alignment, eliminating noise and enhancing driveline longevity.”
• Premature wear under load: vehicles exposed to heavy towing, off-road conditions, or rough Australian terrain often experience centre-bearing failure due to heat, vibration, and stress. Designed for Australian conditions, BW centre bearings use OE-quality replacement parts, ensuring vehicle safety and reliability.

Choosing a suspension kit for your 4x4 is more than just finding the best price or the biggest lift
Suspension is a genuine science, and Ironman 4x4 says it has been in the lab for some time now designing and developing its latest shock absorber; a 2.5” extruded aluminium monotube - the Ironman 4x4 IM2.5.
Ironman 4x4 says the IM2.5 has been designed and developed with one key focus in mind: ‘Ultimate Ride Comfort.’
Ironman 4x4 has been designing and manufacturing suspension components and systems in Australia since 1958, which equates to a level of expertise and experience that it says is unmatched by any other suspension company.
The IM2.5 is a 2.5” diameter monotube shock absorber which features a single-wall construction and increased internal capacity, allowing for a “massive” 57mm piston. Ironman 4x4 says it delivers greater level of tuning to achieve ultimate ride comfort.
At the heart of this velocity-sensitive monotube damper is a large-diameter, ported, billet aluminium piston.
Ironman 4x4 says the design of the IM2.5 is the ideal platform for ‘comfort’ valve tuning and is suited extremely well for lighter vehicles where comfort is prioritised.
While soaking up the bumps and offering a plush ride in daily situations, the velocity-dependant monotube design is also ready to respond to the unexpected and more harsh surface changes we all often encounter off-road.
Ironman 4x4 says the IM2.5 is the perfect suspension companion for 4x4 owners who really value all-day ride comfort and plush off-road performance.
The improved comfort tuning showcased within the IM2.5 has not compromised the overall performance and durability of this on- and off-road shock absorber.
A huge amount of consideration has gone into each and every element, to ensure a robust and well-performing 4x4, off-road suspension solution.
A key advantage of the monotube design is the direct cooling capacity. To take this one step further, Ironman 4x4 says it opted to manufacture the IM2.5 from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 Aluminium.
The company explains aluminium is known for its improved heat management, and it can perform up to four times more efficiently than steel.
Backed by Ironman 4x4’s Unlimited Km, four-year warranty, the IM2.5 is manufactured with class-leading NOK seals to withstand the performance pressure and features of a monotube shock absorber.
The IM2.5 height-adjustable strut and coil combination comes pre-assembled in the box. While historically, struts and coils have been provided separately, Ironman 4x4 says this application has been tuned to allow a single off-the-shelf solution that can be matched at the time of fitment to suit your vehicle’s setup.
The IM2.5 Shock absorbers retail for $350 while the IM2.5 Pre-assembled coilover struts are available for $631.
For more information, Google ‘IM2.5” or visit www.ironman4x4.com.au
The strong growth of the outdoor market in recent years has been driven mainly by young and leisureoriented people.
This trend is also reflected in the choice of vehicle: crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) are very popular in this customer segment.
They usually offer enough space for leisure equipment, are easier on the budget than the large SUVs, and are conditionally suitable for off-road use.
In order to improve the popular crossover models for off-road use, Bilstein says it has developed a special upgrade for CUVs: the Bilstein B8 TerraSport.
It says the shock absorber, developed specially for these vehicles, provides more ground clearance and thus significantly improved off-road capability.
Depending on the application, the Bilstein B8 TerraSport lifts the CUV by one to two inches.
With this additional ground clearance, Bilstein says even rough terrain in the outback is no longer a problem, meaning previously inaccessible destinations can now be reached.
Further, Bilstein says this advantage is not achieved at the expense of poorer road performance, which states it has adjusted the characteristics of the B8 TerraSport so that there is no rocking motion despite the higher centre of gravity.
This is possible thanks to a patented degressive valve setting which reacts immediately to changing surface conditions and adjusts the damping accordingly, seeing the wheels maintain optimal contact with the ground on asphalt as well as under off-road conditions.
Bilstein says the Crosstrek models from 4WD specialist Subaru, which are particularly popular in this segment, offer significantly improved steering and braking performance when equipped with the B8 TerraSport. The suspension does not bottom out and the damping is pleasantly firm when driving fast on the road.
Installation is said to be easy, as the Bilstein B8 TerraSport can be mounted on the factory fitted coil springs. Therefore, no additional lift springs are needed for fans of the outdoors to benefit from the off-road features.
important argument for workshops when they want to recommend CUV drivers to convert to Bilstein B8 TerraSport.
In any case, Bilstein says there is great additional sales potential for workshops, as the Bilstein B8 TerraSport range is available for many popular CUVs, such as Subaru Crosstrek/Subaru XV Crosstrek, Subaru Forester, Subaru Outback, and Toyota RAV4.
Like all Bilstein products, Bilstein says its B8 TerraSport shock absorbers are specifically tested and adjusted for each vehicle model; always with the optimum road performance in mind. For more information, visit www.bilstein.com
A top choice for classic vehicles
Fuel stabilisation is extremely important for people who own valuable and infrequently driven vintage, sports, racing or collectible cars along with motorcycles, boats, and any petrol powered equipment engines.
Those behind STA-BIL explain it is the American formulated and manufactured “world leader” in fuel stabilisation products.
It is important to note that Regular Unleaded Petrol (ULP) begins to break down in as little as 60 days, while High Octane Unleaded (98+) can start to break down in as little as 21 days.
Fuel breakdown reduces octane levels along with the formation of engine deteriorating gum and varnish.
Additionally, all Ethanol fuel blends are hygroscopic, meaning they attract and absorb moisture, resulting in reduced octane levels, contributing to fuel system corrosion and “white rust” within a vehicle’s fuel system.
STA-BIL is a blend of scientific additives which act together to prevent fuel from degrading and oxidising during prolonged storage.
It acts as a protective wrapper around the fuel
molecules so they cannot combine with oxygen or other contaminants to corrupt the fuel.
STA-BIL treated fuel will reportedly perform as though it had been freshly pumped into the fuel tank straight from the refinery pipeline.
Key features and benefits:
• Keeps fuel fresh for at least 12 months (or a double dose for 24 months of fuel protection), ensuring smooth engine starting.
• Protects the fuel system against corrosion and white rust.
• Protects fuel against moisture contamination.
• Protects engines against gum and varnish build up.
• Eliminates the need to drain fuel.
• Eliminates environmental issues with the disposing of bad fuel.
• Maintains optimum engine performance.
• Easy to use “Squeeze Measure” bottles.
• Metric bottle measurements for Australian applications.
STA-BIL is offered in three handy fuel stabiliser product bottle sizes, 118 ml to treat 38 litres,
236 ml to treat 76 litres and a 473 ml bottle to treat 150 litres of fuel.
A specific STA-BIL Marine Formula is also available to protect expensive boat engines in a 236 ml bottle that treats up to 300 litres of fuel.
STA-BIL also offers a small engine range of protective products including a Fast-Fix small engine treatment and Small Engine Pro multi-system additive for cleaning out gum and varnish, along with the STABIL Ceramic Pro-Guard and Blade Guard product designed for mowers and trimmers. The network recently celebrated the opening of its 200th Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto Store
The launch of the Bridgestone Select franchise model in 2006 went against industry conventions and challenged the perception of what a tyre store should be, says Bridgestone.
Bridgestone Select reportedly stunned the industry in its ambition to make the showroom more welcoming and removing tyres from the showroom environment.
Bridgestone’s retail offering also became even more convenient with the introduction of mechanical servicing, which led to the evolution of the brand to become Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto.
Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto introduced its e-commerce platform in 2019 and has continued to go from strength to strength with its transparent online pricing, and seamless online to store transactions.
Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto’s online offering provides the opportunity for customers to select their ideal tyre online and book at their nearest store, with flexibility in payments either on the website or instore, including buy now pay later options through Afterpay and Zip Pay.
The network set another new industry benchmark in 2023 with the nationwide roll out of the Bridgestone Tech Check platform, which gives motorists a mechanic’s perspective through a short video outlining what needs fixing now, and what can wait.
Recently, the store network celebrated an exciting milestone – its 200th store.
According to Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, Heath Barclay, the milestone opening comes at a time when trust, transparency and customer service is more critical than ever.
“We understand that tyres and mechanical servicing can be tasks that many motorists dread, so we’re committed to delivering the best possible experience for Australians through our network of 200 Bridgestone Select Tyre & Auto stores,” Heath said.
“Trust and confidence are so important when it comes to car maintenance, especially in the current economic climate, which is why Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto’s commitment to transparency and exceptional customer service continues to prove a winner with Australian motorists.”
Bridgestone Australia Sales Director, Claudio
Sodano, says that Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto’s growth has come from a customer focused approach in its offerings.
“Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto has evolved significantly since the opening of the first store, to the opening of store number 200, Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto Werribee, but our commitment to customer service has remained the same,” Claudio said.
“We’ve continued to put the customer first and in doing so, we’ve been able to grow to be one of the most extensive networks in the country as well as one of the most trusted providers of tyre and mechanical services in Australia.”
Claudio highlighted that the tyre and mechanical industry has gone through a period of significant change in recent years but emphasised the continued and sustained growth the Bridgestone
Select Tyre and Auto network has benefited from during this time.
“As an industry we’ve seen some major shakeups in ownership over the past few years, but we continue to benefit from steady growth from our retail and franchise model,” Claudio said.
“The opening of our 200th store is another reason both motorists and the industry can have confidence in the Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto brand.
“Over the past few years we’ve benefited from significant network growth, and that’s largely due to our collaborative approach with our franchisees and adoption of new initiatives like Bridgestone Tech Check, and the implementation of programs to support our business partners.”
The network of 200 Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto stores – the primary retail channel for
Bridgestone with stores in all capital and major cities throughout the country – is complemented by a further 150 Bridgestone Service Centres delivering great service to regional areas of Australia.
Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto is a multi-award winning customer service model, with the network taking out Gold in the 2023 Reader’s Digest Quality Service Awards in the tyre retailer category, and Most Outstanding Customer Service award for Car Servicing in the CANSTAR Blue rankings, with a perfect five-star rating across all categories.
New store provides new era for industry expert
The opening of Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto Werribee not only marked an exciting milestone for the network of stores throughout Australia, it was also the start of a new era for franchisee Marco Licalsi.
Marco boasts nearly three decades of experience in the tyre and automotive industry, having started as a tyre fitter and spending time working in the tyre retail space.
For the past 16 years, he has built his business under another brand, and earlier this year he faced a fork in the road.
It was then he opted to make the switch to the established and fast-growing Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto network – painting his store red and adopting the Bridgestone way of business.
“It is not true that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” Marco said.
“I’m excited to join the Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto network. Australians trust Bridgestone more than any other tyre brand, they set the standard in our industry and importantly, I’ve always been a fan of their product.
“There is a lot of structure and process around the Bridgestone franchise model, and it’s all designed to support business success.
“Everyone involved is so professional, and it was the Bridgestone staff that ultimately sold me on joining the network. The support team behind the scenes has been fantastic.”
According to Marco, it is Bridgestone’s continued innovation and investment into systems that makes it such a compelling prospect as a tyre and mechanical business owner, with strong customer focused initiatives.
“Becoming a Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto store means I can offer more to my own customers including e-commerce and the Bridgestone Tech Check video platform.
“These are two things that have been so well received by customers and make a huge difference to the experience that customers receive.
“I can’t believe the difference that Bridgestone Tech Check is making. Quite often we’ll get a
response from the customer saying ‘just do it’ before we’ve even called them to confirm the price. It has removed the hard sell for mechanical services.
“The fleet structure and business associate programs that Bridgestone has in place, such as with Uber, is also a key selling point. It’s all about the customers, and it’s the little things that make a huge difference.”
Heath said he was pleased to welcome Marco to the family.
“I am thrilled to welcome Marco and his team at Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto into the network as our milestone 200th store. I know they will further strengthen our extensive footprint of local, trusted experts for tyre and mechanical needs,” Heath said.

LIQUI MOLY believes in going the extra mile for quality
Lubricant specialist LIQUI MOLY says the statement, “motor oils made in Germany provide quality at the highest level,” is a promise it stands by.
It states “Made in Germany” is a valued designation of origin and promise of quality that many people worldwide trust in.
LIQUI MOLY has been developing and producing motor oils and additives in Germany since 1957 for an international market which now comprises more than 150 partner countries, including Australia.
In doing so, the company says it regularly sets new standards in quality and performance.
LIQUI MOLY’s solutions are largely based on ‘own’ formulations, which are frequently tested and adapted to current technical circumstances wherever necessary.
The company says the best raw materials, compliance with the highest specifications, and a complete testing process – from the ingredients to production and final delivery – ensure the highest level of safety and quality.
Motor oil must be able to do much more than lubricate and cool.
In modern engines, motor oil is really a structural component, with LIQUI MOLY stating that only an excellent motor oil that is pure liquid hightech can enable an engine to develop its full performance while complying with all emission limits.
It must function at high temperatures and under extreme pressure. At the same time, modern motor oil removes combustion residues, abrasion, acids, water and fuel particles from the engine, while protecting the engine from corrosion and ensuring it is leak-tight.
Through continuous research and development by the LIQUI MOLY laboratory team, the company say it guarantees that its oils meet the growing demands and fulfill or even exceed the strict manufacturer approvals of the automotive industry.
As such, it states that customers can trust that LIQUI MOLY’s oils have all these properties and meet the requirements, stating they have been proven to meet the quality standards of several globally recognised organisations for the automotive sector.
It explains this is confirmed, for example, by the Letter of Conformance (LoC) for EELQMS (European Engine Lubricant Quality Management System) in connection with Atiel and the ACEA test sequences, as well as licenses issued by API (American Petroleum Institute) and obligations to JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization).
In total, LIQUI MOLY has more than 300 specific approvals for motor oils from almost all international automobile manufacturers. Each individual approval obliges the company to exclusively produce and market the quality agreed with the OEM.
LIQUI MOLY notes that it sources the raw materials for its products from selected and reliable partners who supply the company with “the very best ingredients.”
Before these are processed, an in-depth incoming goods inspection and testing takes place in the laboratory – only if the ingredients meet the high requirements are they released for further use. Before a product is added to the range, the research and development department carries out various trials and analyses, right up to practical testing.
LIQUI MOLY says it researches, develops and tests until all expectations are met, and the product creates real added value.
In cooperation with the standards committee the motor oil specialists take part in interlaboratory tests for both used and new oils, ensuing that among other things, the analytical methods and results are correct.
LIQUI MOLY explains the zero-defect strategy ensures that, in the end, only those products that are flawless actually make it into delivery, noting that error tolerances are unacceptable.
During production, it notes the product in question must pass through several stages of quality inspection: from the visual inspection of the finished product to the reliable laboratory testing of the formulation.
True quality is about exceeding expectations, delivering peak performance, and providing solutions that last longer and protect better, says LIQUI MOLY, stating that “only by choosing the highest quality ingredients and having state of the art production facilities, such as LIQUI MOLY, this can constantly be achieved.”

Ryco says it is always working to be at the forefront of filtration development and technology
From the new and expanding Ryco NanoCel range to Ryco SynTec Oil Filters, backed by rigorous testing facilities “unseen elsewhere in the market,” Ryco says its products stand out from the crowd.
To prove Ryco products are market lead, Ryco explains it has established Australasia’s only dedicated filtration laboratory.
Here, Ryco engineers carefully test all filters to ensure they meet or exceed original equipment specifications in Australian conditions.
Ryco explains the lab team draws on vast technical experience testing and validating filters, so each Ryco product has absolute design integrity and fulfils Ryco’s promise of genuine performance.
Tested according to SAE and ISO industry standards, Ryco says the following filters offer “peace of mind for optimum engine protection, guaranteed”:
• ISO4548-12 Full Flow Oil Filter
• ISO19438 Diesel and Petrol Filter
• ISO16889 Hydraulic Filters
• SAE HS806 Oil Filter
• SAE HS3729 Air Filter
• ISO 17536 Aerosol Separator Performance (crankcase ventilation)
The company states this means that Ryco filters are not only developed to meet OE standards, but specifically international standards, and in many instances, exceed them.
This is important because Australia’s geology and environment is unique, and industry standards do not take this into account.
Ryco says it needs to exceed these standards to
excel in efficiency, longevity of life, and flow, while keeping Australia’s high silica levels and ambient dust in mind.
From Australia’s sweeping plains, to flooding rains, Ryco says its filters are made so that you can be “Ryco Ready” for anything.
To find filters that suit your vehicle, head to the Ryco website to use the Filter Finder tool and search your VIN or rego.

Burg Design has developed a new formula to meet the demands of modern diesel engines
The design of diesel engines has certainly changed significantly over the years.
Burg Design says it is making every effort to keep up with the ever-evolving industry by analysing its own products and implementing changes as needed.
“We needed to update our product to take into account the changes to the fuels and the demands the engines are making of them,” Burg Design’s Ray Graham said.
One result is the X1R Diesel Power Boosting Treatment, which is a five-in-one treatment that Burg Design says delivers immediate benefits. This treatment is said to significantly improve power/torque delivery and fuel economy and also increases the diesel fuel burn rate ratio through the use of Cetane, which is similar to an octane boost for petrol vehicles.
Burg Design says that with use of this product, the engine will start faster and run smoother. It states the boosting treatment will eliminate all carbon deposits and thoroughly clean all fuel lines and filters.
Moisture is also eliminated from the fuel tanks and lines, and the upper cylinder is lubricated. In addition, Burg Design says it reduces engine wear and stabilises fuel for up to two years.
“Our new Power Boosting Diesel Treatment formula will ensure consistently high engine performance by cleaning dirty injector nozzles, fuel lines, and all filters, and then keeping them free from deposits for a long time – we call this the ‘Clean-Up and Keep-Clean effect,’” Ray said.
“The X-1R Diesel Treatment features a Cetane Booster. This cetane boosting technology ensures that when used, the machine operator will clearly feel a difference in the power delivery.
“Our new formulation contains an improved water dispersant that stops water/ethanol separation and of course reduces exhaust emissions. The product also improves lubricity.”
Burg Design conducted tests on four representative diesel fuels using a treat rate of 96ppm under the ASTM D6079 test protocol with promising results.
“At this treat rate we saw a reduction in Wear Scar
Diameter (WSD) of 73μm from the D975 target of 520μm, thus making all of the fuels EN590 compliant and proving our X-1R Diesel Treatment Technology leads to improved lubricity.”

Mobil 1 says this product meets a whole new level of OEM oil specification: ‘required by the manufacturer’
The Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40 isn’t just approved by Porsche; indeed, the German automaker “categorically requires its use in all its GT models.”
‘Required by Porsche for…’ is printed right there on the C40 GT 0W-40 bottle and there’s even a licensed Porsche image on the front of the slicklooking, new bottle.
MotorActive – a distributor of Mobil 1 in Australia and New Zealand – says “no other oil brand can make the claim of ‘Required by Porsche’ – it is a whole new level of OEM specification.”
It explains such an exclusive distinction is only possible when you’re not just an oil blender, but a bottom-to-top global motor oil manufacturer.
“ExxonMobil tightly controls the entire process, from exploration (to find the world’s highest quality oil reserves), to the extraction and highly refining of that crude, right through to the engineering of a new super-premium, fullsynthetic motor oil like Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40,” MotorActive Managing Director, Bruce Morrison, said.
“This last process is key to what makes all Mobil 1 products a cut above the rest, as it entails millions of kilometers and many thousands of hours of real-world testing to rigorously verify the performance and benefits of any new specification.
“That is the level of effort and pioneering innovation it takes to create the world’s leading synthetic oil brand.”
The advanced technology in Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40 was developed within the framework of the collaboration established between Mobil 1 and Porsche AG over the last 25 years.
Here, the two companies worked hand in hand to specially formulate this entirely new specification of engine lubricant exclusively for Porsche.
“The C40 GT incorporates a unique additives package that delivers enhanced wear protection and exceptional performance in Porsche’s high-
performing, 9000rpm-capable, 4.0-litre, GT engines – even in track and all-out competition applications,” Bruce said.

These products offer at-home ceramic coating applications
Meguiar’s has introduced two new ceramic coating products which are made to deliver professionalgrade ceramic coating results without all the difficulties in application.
Meguiar’s Ultimate Ceramic Coating and Professional M888 Beyond Ceramic Coating are designed to be 100 percent DIY-friendly with a straightforward application process and end results consumers can appreciate.
Meguiar’s advertises these as the next evolution in ceramic coatings with increased longevity and better performance.
Someone who is trying to complete a ceramic coating project on their own may encounter waxes and spray detailers that rely on ordinary SiO₂ hybrid-ceramic chemistry.
However, Meguiar’s says it formulates its ceramic coating products with a different process than any other similar product on the market. It states its cross-linking curing process results in in a strong, direct surface bond when applied to a properly prepared surface.
Meguiar’s says this formulation also leads to
greater durability, slickness, chemical resistance, and hydrophobic properties as compared to its competitors.
The application of the Ultimate Ceramic Coating involves three simple steps: mist on, spread, and wipe off.
Meguiar’s advertises this as being as easy to apply as a spray wax but with up to one full year of protection.
It can also be used to refresh professionally applied ceramic coatings to increase protection and encourage water beading.
The high-quality finish can also help make drying and maintenance easier, and one 236ml bottle has enough product to coat up to four cars.
The Professional M888 Beyond Ceramic Coating does require a specific application technique, but it is significantly less technical and much more forgiving than the average professional coating, says Meguiar’s.
The brand states this product is still very userfriendly with a triple-layer microfibre application pad and clear instructions on how to proceed.
It states consumers may find it worth the extra effort for the multi-year protection and super glossy finish that hides minor surface imperfections. Meguiar’s also promises this product will deliver next-level water beading and incredible slickness.
The brand says that both of these products are suitable for paintwork, plastic trim, PPF, wheels, and chrome.
These ceramic coating solutions are intended to give top results without all the hassle and high expense of other professional-grade applications. For more information, visit www.meguiars.com.au

These filters protect vital components by keeping fluids clean and free of harmful contaminants
Sakura Filters says it is renowned for its highquality filters designed for various machinery systems, including hydraulic and cooling circuits. Hydraulic fluids play an essential role in engine and machinery performance.
Hydraulic fluid is responsible for transmitting power, lubricating system components, preventing corrosion, and minimising heat.
Clean hydraulic fluid ensures that pumps, valves, and cylinders function properly and remain free from damage caused by contaminants.
Hydraulic systems rely on fluid under high pressure to perform various functions such as lifting, pushing, and operating transmissions.
However, over time, this fluid can become contaminated with dirt, rust, moisture, or other debris.
If left unchecked, these contaminants can cause damage to critical components leading to costly repairs and downtime.
Sakura explains that its hydraulic filters are designed to capture these harmful particles, ensuring that the hydraulic fluid remains clean, and the system operates smoothly.
The filters are built to maintain an optimal flow rate while offering fine filtration, ensuring
contaminants are effectively removed without restricting fluid circulation.
Made from high-quality materials, Sakura states that its hydraulic filters are durable and are made to withstand the harsh operating conditions they are often subjected to.
Regular maintenance and timely replacement of these filters prevent premature wear of hydraulic components, extend system life, and improve overall machinery efficiency, says Sakura.
Additionally, coolant is used to circulate through an engine to regulate temperature, preventing it from overheating.
Clean coolant is crucial to maintain optimal engine temperatures and protect against corrosion, scale build-up, and blockages.
Also, the chemicals in coolant can slowly degrade over time – reducing their ability to protect the engine.
Coolant filters are used in automotive, industrial, and agricultural applications to ensure that an engine’s cooling system remains free from debris and impurities.
Most of Sakura’s coolant filters also contain supplemental coolant additives (SCAs) to ensure the coolant remains chemically balanced throughout its service interval.
Those behind this product says it is “a game changer” for engine longevity
When it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s engine, ensuring the right oil flow is crucial.
Morey’s says its Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer stands out in the automotive market as a trusted product for enhancing engine performance and prolonging engine life.
Known for its unique formulation, this oil stabilizer is designed to work with both gasoline and diesel engines, providing a versatile solution for a variety of vehicles.
The primary function of Morey’s Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer is to improve the viscosity of engine oil, especially under high-temperature conditions. It works by maintaining the consistency of the oil properties for a longer period, which helps reduce friction and wear on vital engine components. This is particularly beneficial for older engines or those operating under heavy loads, such as trucks, SUVs, and high-performance vehicles.
Morey’s says the result is a smoother, quieter ride and reduced engine strain, which can lead to fewer mechanical failures and costly repairs over time.
Another key benefit of Morey’s Oil Stabilizer is said to be its ability to reduce oil consumption. By enhancing the oil’s viscosity, it helps prevent excessive burning of oil during high-mileage operation.
Morey’s says this makes it an excellent choice for drivers looking to get the most out of their engine without constantly needing to top off their oil levels.
Beyond its core functionality, Morey’s Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer also boasts impressive protection against engine rust and corrosion.
The additives in the stabilizer form a protective barrier on metal surfaces, guarding against moisture and contaminants that could otherwise cause damage. This makes it a reliable option for all kinds of driving conditions, from city commutes to rugged off-road adventures.
Overall, Morey’s says its Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer is more than just an additive; stating that it is a safeguard for your engine’s long-term health. With a proven track record of performance and protection, Morey’s says this product is a must-
By capturing harmful particles, the filters help prevent engine overheating and improve heat dissipation.
With the use of SCAs, engines are further protected by minimising corrosion and scale build-up.
Sakura says its coolant filters are engineered to work efficiently within the engine’s cooling system, providing reliable filtration without obstructing the flow of coolant.
In conclusion, Sakura says its hydraulic filters and coolant filters are vital to maintaining the cleanliness and efficiency of hydraulic and cooling systems, preventing the build-up of contaminants, helping engines and machinery run smoothly and last longer, and ultimately reducing maintenance costs and preventing possible costly failures.

From Bluechem Australia
Oxicat is a specially developed high-performance cleaner to sustainably and effectively remove soot and carbon deposits in the entire exhaust tract, especially in the area of the catalyst, the oxygen sensor, the turbocharger and the EGR valve.
This new decarbonising technology is a quick and effective preventative cleaner and is suitable for all petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.
With regular use, it provides protection against renewed contamination, increases fuel efficiency, optimises the engine performance and ensures the proper correct function of the catalyst and the oxygen sensors. Thus Oxicat supports compliance with the vehicle’s emission limits.
During driving processes, problems occur in the engine due to catalytic converter and oxygen sensor contamination causing an increase in fuel consumption, poor performance and an increase
in harmful exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons which damage the environment.
These problems occur in all vehicles, especially over short distances and for vehicles with exhaust gas recirculation, direct injection and turbochargers, and in areas with poor fuel quality. Often there is OBD (On Board Diagnostic) error engine light message to the driver.
Bluechem explains that the unique formula of Oxicat does not burn completely during the combustion, but instead remains in the exhaust system. As such, Oxicat will penetrate the residues and contaminations and dissolve them during ordinary driving.
Bluechem’s Oxicat can be used in all petrol and diesel engines and hybrid vehicles and is recommended for vehicles with excessive exhaust emissions.
The product should be applied regularly (every three months) to the fuel tank, 300ml will treat 60-80 litres of fuel. It is especially suited for city driving cycles.
Oxicat + DPF Power Clean
Bluechem says using its Oxicat and DPF Power Clean products together in diesel applications can result in fast and immediate DPF regeneration results within 20 minutes of idling the engine.
The new improved lubricant standards for the latest engine technology go into effect on 31 March 2025
Engine technology continues to change and improve, requiring engine oil enhancements to meet the demands of modern vehicles.
That’s where GF (Gasoline Fuelled) standards come in – every five to seven years a new series of sequence tests or standards are introduced to measure engine oil performance parameters.
The latest standards take effect 31 March 2025. Implemented by ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee), GF-7A and GF-7B specifications help improve fuel efficiency, timing chain wear, deposits, thermal stability and more.
Valvoline says the good news for its customers is that its current GF-6 engine oils not only will be upgraded to meet GF-7 standards, but they also exceed them, providing “exceptional performance and protection against the four main causes of engine breakdown: wear, friction, heat and deposits.”
The new GF-7 standards, effective 31 March 2025
New lubricant standards are going from GF-6 to GF-7, calling for more stringent engine oil protection and performance levels in numerous areas, including:
• Fuel economy and fuel economy retention
• Engine durability
• Wear protection
• Low-speed pre-ignition reduction in both new and aged oils
• Piston cleanliness
• Timing chain wear protection
GF-7 continues the A and B sub-specifications started first with the 2020 GF-6 upgrade.
The GF-7A designation applies to all grades 0W-20 and heavier. It is backward compatible to all previous GF-6A, GF-5 and older specifications.
The GF-7B designation applies to all SAE 0W-16 viscosity products and is backward compatible to GF-6B only.
The ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B industry standards contain several upgrades to the existing engine series tests.
The Sequence IIIH (Deposit Test), Sequence VIE (Fuel Economy) and Sequence X (Timing Chain Wear) are increasing the performance limits a baseline lubricant must pass.
Thanks to Valvoline’s dedicated internal Engine
Bluechem’s DPF Power Clean is a high power cleaner engineered as a Diesel Chemical Solution to help the regeneration of Diesel Particular Filters. The product can be used in all diesel engines and mixed with all diesel fuels and works while the engine is running.
A 375ml can of DPF Power Clean can treat up to 80 litres of diesel fuel.
The simple combination of DPF Power Clean with Oxicat results in DPF regeneration and all of the resulting benefits including reduced soot, increased Exhaust Gas Temperature, reduced emissions and improved fuel economy says Bluechem.

With the cost-of-living squeeze, Australian motorists are feeling the pinch now more than ever
This often leads to false-economy decisions that prioritise short-term savings, often at the cost of expensive repairs further down the line. When it comes to cars, and especially their engines, the secret to longevity is maintenance. Regularly and well-maintained cars will last longer and perform better than their neglected counterparts. While this may seem obvious, recent market studies show that consumers are increasingly prone to skipping their cars’ recommended services and/or use inferior lubricants and additives in order to save money.
Unfortunately, these savings often result in expensive repairs or part replacements later on.
It is a matter of trust
There are some a products on the automotive aftermarket that are often not fit for purpose.
To the average consumer, they all look similar so we can’t blame them for choosing products based on the price alone.
Educating the consumers and explaining the hidden danger of using inferior products rests on you – the automotive professional. This is why building relationships with your customers is more important than ever.
“Technicians build trust with customers, often over many years,” JLM Lubricants Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Gilbert Groot, said.
“When times are tough there’s an even greater emphasis on keeping repair and service costs within limits customers can afford.
“Top quality additives, or Liquid Tools, as we call them, can often take the place of a replacement part – with everyone winning!”
JLM Lubricants states that from DPF cleaners, intake cleaners, and injector cleaners to engine oil additives and lubricants, using premium quality, proven products not only prevents unexpected
(and unbudgeted) problems, but ensures reliability, performance and longevity.
A smooth-running, economical vehicle, performing at its optimum level means a happy customer; a customer which keeps returning for regular maintenance and service visits.
The big picture
“There are around 30,000 parts in a modern car, from the tiniest nuts and bolts to the engine block,” Gilbert said.
“Every time a technician fixes a part using one of our products, instead of replacing that part, it not only saves the workshop time and the customer money, it is one less part to order, one less part for scrappage.
“For vehicles where a part replacement cost either exceeds the vehicle’s value or it’s just not economically viable for the customer, using our products in a preventative way, or indeed, as a substitute for a new part, is the smart alternative.
“Take a Diesel Particulate Filter as an example. Cleaning a clogged DPF using even the most expensive, heavy-duty JLM cleaning products will still only cost a fraction of a replacement DPF, not to mention the time savings.
“This is where we’re seeing the biggest breakthroughs, in terms of the rising demand for JLM Lubricants’ products.”
With the global commitment to “Repair over Replace” growing rapidly, automotive workshops are playing a key part in the circular economy.
Choose wisely
JLM says its commitment to providing premium, effective, trade-grade solutions for common problems is evident in every product.
It states that recognised testing credentials, clear labelling of all active ingredients and focus on safety and environmental impact set it apart from
the multitude of “generic” products that claim to perform the same function.
“We’ve conducted studies that clearly show most generic products as ineffective at best and harmful at worst,” Gilbert said.
“Sadly, those products offset their shortcomings with an attractive, low price. In this case, the old saying You Get What You Pay For rings true.”
JLM explains that its brand mission is to develop and manufacture products that are in sync with the “Lean” philosophy which promotes the flow of value to the customer through the guiding tenets of continuous improvement and eliminating waste in processes to deliver more value with fewer resources.
It states that JLM’s development team works closely with automotive technicians, ensuring the new products and the existing formulas each play an important part in the Repair over Replace revolution.

When it comes to automotive repair, the right tools can make or break a job
Auto technicians need equipment that not only works well but also boosts efficiency and precision. Gearwrench says this is where its 90T Ratcheting Wrenches come into play; designed to address the most common challenges of speed, strength, access. If you are looking to cut down on time, Gearwrench says a 90T ratcheting wrench is a must-have in your toolkit.
The main feature which sets the 90T ratcheting wrench apart is its 90-tooth mechanism, which allows for just a four-degree swing arc to turn fasteners.
While traditional ratcheting wrenches require larger swing arcs – sometimes as much as five to 10 degrees – Gearwrench says the 90T wrenches let you to work in far tighter spaces with more precision. This is especially useful when working on vehicles with limited space, such as underneath the car, behind an engine, or in compact areas like suspension components.
In these tight spaces, every degree of movement matters. The 90T ratcheting wrench allows you to work in places where a traditional wrench wouldn’t
fit, making it easier to get fasteners turning without unnecessary repositioning of the tool, says Gearwrench.
As well as its reduced swing arc, the Gearwrench 90T wrench offers flexibility through its Double Flex GearBox design.
It also features a 180-degree flex head, allowing it to pivot and reach fasteners that may be positioned around corners or in awkward angles.
This is especially helpful when working in confined spaces, as the flex head ensures you don’t need to remove and reposition the tool constantly.
The wrench also includes off-corner loading, which helps prevent fastener rounding – a common problem when the wrench slips or doesn’t engage the fastener properly.
This feature, along with the extra-long beam that provides leverage and strength, helps you apply more torque without compromising the control or safety of your work.
Gearwrench 90T ratcheting wrenches are also ergonomically designed with handles that ensure a comfortable, non-slip grip, even during extended use.
The longer beam provides leverage while still being comfortable in your hands, reducing fatigue and increasing your efficiency.
For those who regularly work in tight positions, the 15-degree offset found on some models helps improve knuckle clearance.
This means fewer accidental hits to your hands or wrists, making the wrench more comfortable to use in awkward positions.

Meeting Australian Standards for window tinting
Window tinting regulations in Australia aim to balance safety, visibility, and comfort.
Most States enforce typically a minimum Visible Light Transmission (VLT) of 35 percent for windows on either side of the driver, while rear windows often have more lenient requirements.
Victoria, however, has some of the strictest standards, requiring workshops to document compliance with photo evidence of the tint test results.
These regulations are crucial in maintaining road safety, ensuring that drivers retain adequate visibility while reducing risks associated with excessive tinting.
Visibility issues, including those caused by excessive window tinting, are widely recognised as a significant factor in road accidents, particularly in low-light conditions or adverse sunlight conditions.
Reduced visibility can delay a driver’s reaction time and hinder their ability to detect obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles.
Workshops and garages play a critical role in ensuring compliance, as failure to meet legal requirements can render vehicles unroadworthy and even expose service providers to liability.
To support workshops and enforcement agencies, AutoTest says the AutoLight MAGNETIC offers a cutting-edge solution for tint testing.
It says this hands-free light transmission meter is lightweight, portable, and designed for ease of use, delivering precise results in seconds.
It reportedly streamlines compliance with stringent regulations, particularly in Victoria, where photo documentation of test results is mandatory.
For advanced applications, AutoTest says the AutoLight Plus takes functionality further with enhanced connectivity, seamlessly integrating with Workshop Pro, a 10-inch Android tablet brake tester and workshop maintenance tool for efficient record keeping and reporting.
According to AutoTest, law enforcement agencies, including the Victoria Police, already rely on AutoLight Window Tint Meter to ensure vehicles meet safety standards.
AutoTest says this widespread use underscores

In this article, Warren and Brown answer this common question
If you have inherited an old Warren and Brown torque wrench, such as one of its deflecting beam models, you might wonder if it needs calibrating.
Warren and Brown says these tools are renowned for their durability and accuracy, often passed down through generations.
But does age affect their precision? It is a common question.
Warren and Brown says its torque wrenches from the 70s and 80s were among the best for tasks like tightening head bolts, harmonic balancer bolts, and flywheel pulley bolts.
Known for their reliability, it says these tools have stood the test of time.
However, even the best tools require some attention to maintain their accuracy.
Generally, Warren and Brown deflecting beam torque wrenches shouldn’t need calibration if they’ve been well-maintained.
Proper storage, such as keeping them in their original boxes and without tension, helps preserve their accuracy.
However, if they’ve been roughly handled, dropped, or stored improperly, calibration might be necessary.
Warren and Brown states you can perform a basic calibration check at home to ensure your torque wrench is still accurate.
It advises you use a modern ratchet-type torque wrench for comparison on a torque test rig –securing a bolt in a vice can serve for this purpose. After securing a large bolt in a vice, test both wrenches at various torque settings (for example, three to five different settings) to determine if calibration is required.
Professional Calibration
For those who prefer a professional touch, Warren and Brown says you should consider taking your torque wrench to a specialist.

A range of options is available from Interequip
Interequip offers a number of solutions across different price ranges to suit varying requirements. Amongst the range are solutions from Autel, Thinkcar, and Cojali Jaltest.
Interequip says Autel’s latest MS909CV comes with B200 for heavy duty battery test and report and features optional ADAS calibration software for Class 3-5 vehicles, ADAS coverage, and Class 6-8 vehicle dynamic calibration.
Meanwhile, it states the Autel MS908CVII is a cheaper option than MS909CV for light, medium and heavy duty trucks but excludes the ADAS option.
Both MS909CV and MS908CVII come with J2534 pass-thru module. Autel’s ADAS main frame is compatible for CV and Passenger cars, it just needs the CV ADSAS upgrade kit and can only work with the MS909CV scan tool.
Interequip says the Thinkcar Max Full version is an affordable scan tool ‘two in one’ for passenger
cars, hybrids, heavy duty trucks and commercial vehicles.
Model Max comes with a large 13.3 inch colour touch screen and features specialised OEM advanced programming software.
Think X2 also features a 10 inch touch screen with a J2534 Pass-Thru module upgradable with a CV software package.
Interequip notes that during programming, it is very important to have a continuous power supply – Thinkcar has the PPS150 ‘five in one’ multi-functional programming power supply to make sure the power is stabilised for the scan tool performing deep level programming. The PPS150 can also jump start and fast charge car batteries. Thinkcar also has a ADAS calibration frame to add on.
There is also a 2025 new release from Thinkcar – a multifunctional maintenance tester which integrates a pressure test (cylinder, transmission), oil test (lubricant and brake oil quality), tyre pressure test, and tyre thread test. Interequip will be exhibiting this product at upcoming trade shows.
Another brand available from Interequip is Cojali Jaltest, which presents a professional diagnostic scanner specialising in heavy duty and commercial vehicles.

Help your customers by offering spare keys as part of your service options
Here is the scenario, your regular customer realises they’ve lost or misplaced their car key – it is a common, frustrating experience for drivers, and mechanics see firsthand the stress and inconvenience it can cause when you are left with only one key for your car, flirting daily with the real prospect of not having a way to start your vehicle if you misplace or damage the only remaining key.
From being stranded at the shops to facing costly delays, not having a spare key can quickly turn a simple inconvenience into a major headache. That’s where you can stand out by offering added value during vehicle servicing, helping your customers stay prepared by providing spare keys as part of your service options. It is a simple yet impactful way to enhance customer satisfaction and build loyalty.
The VS – VZ Commodore is an example of a very popular vehicle that MAP Keys and Remotes can
provide a spare key and DIY programming option for your customer.
MAP Keys and Remotes offer replacement keys fobs and also a very easy to use key programming device that plugs in to the OBD port of the car, allowing multiple keys to be programmed quickly and easily.
The KF200 programming tool works with the MAP keys KF204 and KF205, which suit the range of VS-VZ Commodores.
Programming can be done in approximately two minutes, with a maximum of eight keys programmable to one vehicle.
The KF200 is required because there is no onboard procedure to learn a new key to the vehicle. Using a device is the only way to program new keys.
“It is designed to be simple enough that anyone can DIY and it is the market leading, cost-effective
stand-alone solution, designed and programmed in Australia by our in-house team of engineers,” MAP Keys and Remotes says.
The KF200 can be purchased through national parts supply stores in Australia and New Zealand. For more information or to purchase from a local part supplier, visit www.maparts.com.au
Brad Gannon recently took on the role of Group Chief Executive Officer for the Capricorn Society, taking the next step in a 16-year career with the cooperative
The new year brings us a new Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer, the Perth born and bred, Brad Gannon.
Brad has progressed to the leadership role after 16 years with the organisation, with the last five spent as Automotive Chief Executive Officer.
“I’m thrilled to be leading Capricorn as we start our 51st year of supporting our community of Members, Preferred Suppliers and our hardworking team members,” Brad said.
“Capricorn is an amazing purpose-led organisation that is genuinely committed to making a difference. Our purpose is not just written on the walls, it is lived each and every day.”
Brad’s first job provided a subtle hint that cars would become a part of his entire professional career.
He started out as a central Perth Car Park Attendant working the 5:00pm to midnight shift. After a number of years, he progressed to the prime-time Saturday afternoon shift.
“My first job involved interacting with a great mix of customers from the tenants in the building, to the shoppers, theatre goers, and everyone in between. I became very good at dealing with flat batteries and executing the old push start, something young people today would have less of an idea about!” Brad said.
While working as a Car Park Attendant, Brad studied at University and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in General Management along with a Bachelor of Laws.
Brad then worked in a law firm for ten years, progressing through various roles to Senior Associate and ultimately becoming a Partner.
This exposed the talented young lawyer to a broad range of corporate, commercial and litigation work.
“After a decade in a law firm, I had reached the point where I was looking for something different and Capricorn was looking to appoint its very first in-house General Counsel. I applied for the role and was successful and it was the start of a wonderful journey at the organisation,” Brad said.
“Most recently I led Capricorn’s automotive division across Australia and New Zealand. This role included managing the field sales team who look after our Members face to face, the customer service team who provide phone assistance, and managing our preferred supplier relationships, product development and sales operations.
“This role also included responsibility for all of our products outside of Capricorn Mutual, including our Trade Accounts, the Capricorn Rewards program, Capricorn Travel and our extended lending / financial services products to name a few.
“My 16 plus years of experience at Capricorn has given me a clear understanding of the needs of both our Members and our suppliers. I am always looking for ways for us to help them grow stronger, so as Group CEO I look forward to helping their businesses thrive.”
Brad is passionate about mentoring and promoting from within. His advice for people starting a new career:
“believe in yourself and be adaptable.”
“Having that growth mindset where you are open to learning and new opportunities will mean that anything you perceive as setbacks along the way are just the fuel you need to achieve your ultimate success,” Brad said.
“Work hard and seek feedback. Build strong relationships with others – you will be amazed how generous and supportive people are with their time for those trying to make a difference to themselves and those around them.
“A good attitude is more important than a large range of skills. Skills can be learned by those with a good attitude, but if you don’t have the right attitude, this limits the individual as well as having a negative impact on those around them.
“Finally, look after yourself both physically and mentally so you can take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves during the formative years of your career and beyond.
“I have truly loved making a difference to people’s lives in terms of the work I have done or how I have helped individuals realise their potential. I have found that so many people talk themselves down when the reality is they are capable of so much more than they ever knew or thought.”
Brad is philosophical about the lessons learned from decisions that may not have been the best for whatever reason.
“There are always those hiring decisions which you have not got quite right, but probably the bad decisions that stick in my mind are where we may have underestimated the amount of change required to achieve a specific goal,” Brad said.
“On the flip side, going too slow on change that needs to be made is never good, it is imperative to bring everyone on board when hard decisions need to be made and action taken.”
On the personal side, Brad – who is married with two teenage children – likes getting out and about.
“I enjoy exercising, getting outdoors, going for a walk or a swim and spending time with family and friends. Exercising also helps me with my other passion of eating too much or my habit of eating more of the wrong things than I should. I enjoy a good movie or TV show and I am partial to some sport,” he said.
“My family means everything to me. Like every father, you want to support, nurture and provide your children with great opportunities to grow and be themselves. All you want is for them to be good people and to help those around them. I truly believe that when your family is happy, so are you.”
Capricorn was formed back in 1974, when a group of Golden Fleece Service Station owners met at a training session on how to run a business. Over the next four days, these twelve strangers got to know one another and while discussing the topic ‘How to improve your business,’ they discussed buying better.
Taking matters into their own hands, the owners formed a joint buying group to pool their resources and increase their buying power. The strategy worked, and their numbers grew to 17, when they decided to officially register as a cooperative.
Frank O’Connor was appointed General Manager and remained in this position until 2000, growing the strength of the company while always maintaining its original purpose and vision.
The early years were tough and the fledgling cooperative nearly didn’t make it on several occasions. But under Frank’s stewardship, Capricorn grew until Membership passed the 500 mark in 1988.
In 2004, Capricorn celebrated reaching 9,000 Members and today Capricorn has more than 30,000 Members and 2,000 Preferred Suppliers who make up its community across Australia and New Zealand. Capricorn Members include mechanics, collision repairers, auto electricians and those from other related fields.
The Capricorn product range includes a trade account, fuel card, a generous reward program, a travel agency along with extended lending products. Capricorn Members also have the option to take out risk protection through Capricorn Mutual which was launched in 2003.
The success of Capricorn was never guaranteed. But Brad says where it is today is a testament not just to the vision of the original founders and the hard work of all those who have followed, but to the value Members continue to see in the power of working together.
Brad says Capricorn has survived and thrived because the organisation has spent half a century listening to and meeting the needs of its Members.
In explaining Capricorn’s long-term success, Brad outlines the very straight forward key strategies.
“Capricorn has always been driven by cooperative principles. Our Members and the broader Community including our Preferred Suppliers and team always come first in every decision that we make,” Brad said.
“It is this spirit of cooperation that makes us unique because we are making decisions that are sustainable for all of our community across the long term. It is also important to note that our Members are not just our customers; they are also our owners.”
The Capricorn community and the connection that exists between its Members, Preferred Suppliers and the Capricorn team is identified by Brad as the company’s key competitive advantage.
“We clearly understand that running a workshop can be isolating and challenging, so having Capricorn’s support, whether by attending industry events or utilising our industry tailored training products and business services, we hope to make the running of an automotive aftermarket business less isolating and much easier,” he said.
Like all business owners across the industry, Capricorn Members are presently facing a number of challenges, with many continuing to be impacted by the skills shortage along with feeling the pinch of the ever-increasing cost of living.
“Capricorn remains committed to helping our Members’ businesses and we will be focusing on continually improving our services to support our Community. We will also be introducing new ways for our Members to reconcile their statements, to make online purchases from our Preferred Suppliers along with new opportunities to save on energy costs,” Brad stated.
By introducing initiatives such as the Capricorn Rising Stars Apprentice of the Year Award to encourage and recognise apprentices in the industry, to promoting the industry and the opportunities that it provides, Brad says Capricorn is committed to working with its Members to look for solutions to ease the pressure of these and future challenges ahead.
“We have created a very strong and successful community within the automotive aftermarket industry that extends beyond business relationships and this continues to be our focus moving forward,” he said.
“It is our goal to help all members of the Capricorn community through every step of their business journey, as ultimately their success is our success.”
Capricorn proudly works alongside the AAAA to champion change and to help resolve issues faced by our industry, collaborating on the issues that directly affect its Members.
“Capricorn and the AAAA form a powerful voice for the industry, complementing rather than competing with each other in an industry that we are all passionate about,” Brad said.
“We also share the main reason why both of our organisations were originally formed - to support and deliver value back to its members in the automotive aftermarket industry.”

The company says its recent rapid expansion allows it to better serve customers
Being there for its customers is at the heart of Burson Auto Parts, says those behind the company.
Over the last six months, Burson Auto Parts has undergone rapid expansion across Australia, providing mechanics and workshops with greater access to an extensive range of parts, tools and equipment.
In Tasmania, Burson’s Cambridge store opened its doors to customers on September 30, 2024.
“The Cambridge store represents the latest step in our expansion across the Hobart region, enabling us to service more trade customers from the eastern side of the Derwent River to the Tasman Peninsula,” Burson Auto Parts Tasmanian Regional Manager, Shaun Medhurst, said.
Expansion continued throughout last year, with Burson’s first Victorian satellite store opening in Clyde North on November 29, 2024, in order to meet growing demand east of its existing Cranbourne store.
Burson Auto Parts says early customer feedback was fantastic, with many loving the added convenience the store brought to the community.
“We look forward to continuing to provide great service and be an integral part of the area!”
Burson Auto Parts Clyde North Store Manager, Joe Calipari, said.
To mark the end of 2024, Burson Auto Parts hit the ground running by opening its Erina store in New South Wales.
This store opening represented Burson’s continued push to expand across the Central Coast region.
“We’re looking forward to serving local businesses and providing the quality service that Burson is known for,” Burson Auto Parts Erina Store Manager, Peter Griffey, said.
“With our team’s combined experience, we’re eager to build strong relationships with the trade community here.”
In an effort to consolidate and streamline delivery services to customers, Burson Auto Parts has implemented multiple store mergers.
The Katoomba store has been merged into the Penrith branch (NSW). Joondalup has been integrated into Wangara (WA), as has Ashmore into Southport (QLD).
Store relocations also took place in the Australian Capital Territory, with the Fyshwick and Mitchell branches moving to locations that offer greater visibility and more optimal space for business operations.
As Burson Auto Parts makes headway into 2025, it says connecting with customers remains a top priority.
Customers south of the Gold Coast can now access Burson’s newest store in Mermaid Beach (QLD) and further stores are expected to open in Kangaroo Flat (SA) and Redland Bay (QLD), providing greater access to Burson’s expert advice and extensive catalogue of parts, tools and equipment.
Burson Auto Parts says that its continuous expansion “represents its commitment to being your number one trusted trade partner, and bringing its service promise – We’ll Get It Sorted –to your workshop.”

The workshop took out the “Best Automotive and Transport” category
Brisbane European specialist, K and G Automotive, says it was thrilled late last year to take out the win in the Best Automotive and Transport Business category at the 2024 Logan Business Distinction Awards.
This marks a significant achievement for the family-run business, which previously won the Best Business in Logan Award in 2018.
Celebrating 17 years of operation this year, K and G Automotive says it has cemented its reputation
as an industry leader, known for its expertise in servicing and repairing European brands like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, Mini, and Skoda.
It says its commitment to automotive excellence, innovation, and exceptional customer care has been key to its continued success.

Megabus suggests three effective customer retention strategies
In the fast-changing and ever-evolving automotive industry, building lasting customer relationships is the key to standing out and driving consistent business growth.
Follow-ups are a simple yet powerful tool to enhance customer satisfaction, build loyalty, and ultimately boost profits.
Megabus outlines the following as three straightforward strategies you can integrate into your business.
General follow-ups
Reaching out to customers shortly after their visit with a call, SMS, or email can make a lasting impression.
This gesture shows you value their business, care about their experience, and are open to feedback.
A thank-you message, or a quick check-in, can turn one-time clients into lifelong advocates who are more likely to recommend your services to family and friends.
Targeted follow-ups
Did a customer express interest in additional
services or products during their last visit? Do not let that opportunity slip by.
Use your system to schedule a reminder to follow up with them later, offering tailored suggestions or a special promotion.
This personalised approach not only increases sales but also demonstrates that you pay attention to their needs.
Scheduled service reminders
Routine maintenance is a cornerstone of automotive workshop businesses, and helping customers stay on track benefits both them and your business.
Ensure your system flags upcoming services and sends reminders via SMS or email.
This proactive approach not only keeps their vehicles in top condition but also secures repeat bookings. Customers will appreciate the courtesy and planning, which allows them to budget for the expense.
Follow-ups do more than drive revenue, they foster trust and long-term relationships.
By showing genuine commitment to customer
care, you position your business as a partner in your customer’s automotive needs.
Megabus recommends you start small –implementing these changes does not require overhauling your operations, just a focus on organisation and consistency, with the payoff being happier customers, better retention, and a thriving workshop.
Megabus encourages you to invest in follow-ups and watch your profits grow, but warns to ensure you always comply with spam laws to ensure your customer communications are both effective and legally compliant.

Since 1997, ZF has produced 40 million passenger car axle drives for international passenger car OEMs
If you add the 10 million bevel gear sets and differentials installed in ZF automatic and dualclutch transmissions with integrated final drives, the total surpasses 50 million ZF final drives.
Today, ZF says it is the market leader in axle drives for conventional (front engine and rearwheel drive) internal combustion engine drivetrain layouts.
Thanks to significantly improved traction, stability and control, which result in enhanced safety and driving dynamics, the trend towards all-wheeldrive applications has contributed to the rise in demand for ZF’s proven axle drives over the past 20 years.
All-wheel drive boosts demand and safety
The success story for ZF passenger car axle drives began in 1997 when ZF produced the front and rear axle drives for the Mercedes-Benz M-Class at its Tuscaloosa (USA) site, with the bevel gear sets initially supplied from Passau.
ZF took advantage of the boom in all-wheel drive vehicles and the resulting demand and opened new production plants for bevel gear sets and the assembly of axle drives in Thyrnau and Gotha (Germany), Gainesville, and Marysville (USA), as well as Shenyang and Hangzhou (China). Now, the ZF customer list for axle drives is longer and more international.
Ongoing development breeds success for broadest product range
Since the first product generation, ZF axle drives have been characterised by lightweight construction thanks to their aluminium housings.
Thanks to its ground bevel gear sets, together with application-specific gear design, ZF says it has improved refinement and lowered noise levels.
In subsequent product generations, the weight was further reduced through design optimisations and the efficiency was improved by using lowfriction bearings and low-viscosity oils.
“The increasing demand over the decades has enabled us to create a range of variants,” ZF Head of the Axle Drives Product Line, Kay Schmidt, said.
“We focused on modularisation at an early stage, developing a system of standard components. As a result, we now have the world’s broadest range of axle drives to extract the best performance in any application.“
With the introduction of the controlled differential lock in ZF rear-axle transmissions in 2002, ZF was able to offer new mechatronic and electronic features as well as software control.
The electronically-controlled differential lock allows variable torque distribution between the two wheels of the rear axle, which not only improves traction even further, but also enhances driving dynamics and driving safety. Now in its fourth generation, ZF says it has continuously developed this feature to benefit its customers.
For the increasing number of all-wheel drive vehicles with front-transversal drive configuration, ZF has developed a rear-axle drive with an integrated all-wheel drive clutch based on its expertise from the differential lock.
This is a complete system consisting of mechanical, mechatronics and software elements to deliver all-wheel drive functionality.
This product is complemented by a powertake-off unit (PTO) installed on the front axle, which directs torque to the rear axle according to the requirements determined by the all-wheel clutch.
Based on its purely mechanical axle drive solutions, ZF also offers software-controlled, intelligent solutions with extended functionality for mild and plug-in hybrid vehicles (MHEV, PHEV) applications.
Just like the standard axle drives, ZF says they are characterised by a low power-to-weight ratio, low noise levels, and good efficiency – all essential for such powertrains.
ZF says the production anniversary proves that know-how and innovative spirit are well received worldwide. 40 million times – and the counter continues to run.

Airbag Man is celebrating this milestone in 2025
Reaching a 30-year milestone is a solid achievement for any business, and for Airbag Man, those behind the company say it is a testament to three decades of innovation, growth, and dedication to quality.
Since its inception in 1995, Airbag Man says it has pioneered the air suspension industry, creating reliable, high-quality products for a wide range of applications, from 4WDs and heavy vehicles to caravans and industrial equipment.
“It has been an incredible ride,” Airbag Man General Manager, Ben Clamp, said.
“Thirty years ago, Airbag Man was operated out of the family home and quickly grew, moving into three new facilities by 2009.
“Fast forward to 2020, we constructed our own purpose-built facility, which was more than three times the size of the current building at the time.
“As a three-year-old, I attended shows with my dad (Airbag Man Founder and Managing Director, Richard Clamp).
“Now as the General Manager at 33 years old, I look back at the absolute grind my parents went through to provide for our family and grow the business from the ground up – at the hard work, dedication and innovation achieved by the whole team, past and present.
“I am so proud of the business and, as we call it, ‘our Airbag Man family.’”
Airbag Man initially gained traction supplying replacement airbags for heavy vehicles in Australia, but the company really came into its own by designing vehicle-specific air suspension assist kits for 4WDs.
These kits provide users with the ability to adjust their vehicle’s ride height and improve handling, offering an innovative solution that filled a significant gap in the market.
Outside the HV and 4WD applications Airbag Man is widely known for, some of the places its products pop up might just surprise you.
Applications extend as far and wide as industrial and agricultural machinery, emergency vehicles, mobility, military, transport, rail, and even movie special effects.
Over the years, the company expanded its product range to an impressive 7,000 line items (and growing), including compressors, air tanks, air struts, lift axle valves, and more.
As the industry evolved, so did Airbag Man. The company invested heavily in research and development to stay ahead of market trends, introducing new technologies and custom applications that have set new standards for durability and performance in air suspension systems.
Airbag Man credits much of its success to a dedication to innovation.
“Our engineering team is second to none,” Ben said.
“We’ve always had a strong focus on R&D, ensuring that we keep up with new vehicle releases and bring new products to market as soon as possible to meet customer demand.
“This approach has been instrumental in our longevity and ongoing success.”
Airbag Man says its commitment to excellence extends beyond just its products.
The company prides itself on its customer service, offering expert advice and comprehensive support to ensure customers get the most out of their air suspension systems.
“Our customers are the heart of our business,” Ben said.
“We’ve built long-lasting relationships by providing solutions that truly add value, and that’s something we’ll continue to do moving forward.”
As Airbag Man enters its fourth decade, the company remains committed to its founding principles.
“Looking ahead, we’re focused on continuing to innovate and deliver products that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” Ben said.
“The next 30 years will be just as exciting as the first.”
Airbag Man says its 30-year milestone is a testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence, solidifying its place as a trusted leader in the air suspension industry.
