Foreword Quite fittingly, Music for a New Society is the name of what is generally viewed as John Cale’s masterpiece. It will be performed live and in its entirety for the first time ever during the Unofficial Opening of the Festival. Twenty-one Mexicans performing on Bispetorvet is about as live as it gets. They will ‘play’ Huey Mecatl: 10 shipping containers built into a twostorey pentagon. Theatre Replacement and Neworld Theatre will perform Winners and Losers, which will tell us loud and clear who the winners and losers are in the game of the times. How do you measure up?
Crossing geographic and artistic boundaries, Aarhus Festival has hand-picked the best entertainment for this year’s programme. From 30 August to 8 September, the Festival will be an antidote to the daily grind as we add a sparkle to the city’s many venues.
There’s also space for the more humorous aspects of daily life’s trivial challenges, with Victoria Melody, Carl-Einar Häckner and the Festival’s comical guardian angel Diane Spencer presenting our most ambitious and innovative comedy programme to date.
Planning the 10 days has taken us far and wide and has showed us that there is an increased awareness of the Festival among artists from around the world. The arts always tend to respond to the calls of their time and they do so today, in a period when it can be difficult to recognise our own world and when our own interpretation of this world is under reconstruction.
In this edition of the programme, Aarhus Festival has gathered a collection of events that particularly appeal to the Festival’s international guests. We look forward to welcoming you to Aarhus during this year’s Festival week.
Guided by this year’s theme, Signs of life – in a new reality, we want to explore the essential issues that we need to relate to, both in general and specifically in our city, and find ways to express this in a dynamic way.
Jens Folmer Jepsen, Director, Aarhus Festival

Gala Opening
Det Kongelige Kapel: Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, 30.08.2013, Musikhuset Aarhus
At this year’s Gala Opening of Aarhus Festival, Det Kongelige Kapel (The Royal Chapel) will play Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, directed by chief conductor Michael Boder. Also known as ‘The Tragic’, Symphony No. 6 embraces both fragility and pomp. Its Mahlerian finesse has an overwhelming clarity, while at the same time it is so dark that it rips into the soul. Mahler wrote the symphony at a happy time in his life. He had just married Alma Schindler, and his second daughter was born while he was composing the piece. Yet the tragic undercurrent of the symphony was to prove almost prophetic because after he had finished the work, Mahler faced several bouts of misfortune in rapid succession.

Unofficial Opening
John Cale (UK): Music for a New Society 29.08.2013, Rådhushallen ”It is, in many ways, Cale’s masterpiece.” Uncut
In 1982, former The Velvet Underground member John Cale wrote and released Music for a New Society. Over time, the album has become a classic with near cult status. Aarhus Festival has invited Cale to perform the album in its entirety for the first time ever. No additional performances have been planned so this will, in all respects, be a unique night, and one which has already attracted international attention. Cale will perform with his own US musicians and will also use the opportunity to perform more
recent songs. A Danish string quartet and four local choir singers will support the performance of Music for a New Society.
Unofficial Medium/rare Session with The DeSoto Caucus feat. KT Tunstall (UK), Beth Orton (UK) and Jim White (US) The DeSoto Caucus have added a local touch to a series of concerts at which local meets international under the title The Medium-rare Sessions. With a new album hot off the press and an impressive catalogue of positive reviews from national as well as international critics, the band is ready to embrace Aarhus Festival’s international guests again.
albums, but’Invisible Empire//Crescent Moon’ has brought the singer back on her A-game. With her second solo album, Trailer Park, Beth Orton created her unique ‘folktronica’ sound. In 2012 she published her most recent album, Sugaring Season – a monumental sign of life from an artist who, after some time away from the music industry, discovered that she still had an essential message to convey in the new now.
At the Unofficial Opening of the Festival, The DeSoto Caucus will accompany KT Tunstall, Beth Orton and Jim White.
Jim White is an alternative country musician, an elegant film director, a curious photographer and mass consumer of new technology. Back in the late 1990s David Byrne fell for White and signed him to his record label, Luaka Bop, which issued White’s first albums.
Critics and fans sighed with relief as KT Tunstall’s new album ’Invisible Empire//Crescent Moon’ was released in June 2013. The British singer has evolved a lot since her solo debut ’Eye to the Telescope’, which in 2004 earned her critical acclaim and millions of fans across the globe. It’s been a challenge for KT Tunstall to reach the same heights with subsequent

Artist-in-residence: Jim White (US)
Efterklang: The Ghost of Piramida, documentary (CPH:DOX)
Jim White is both an unruly and a disciplined artist. He takes a bit of everything and gives a bit of everything, but whatever he does, he does it with zeal. Jim White will come to Aarhus and Aarhus Festival over a longer period, not just to make music but also to direct a movie set in the city. The movie, Jim White’s thoughts about it and some musical samples can be experienced when the Copenhagen documentary festival CPH:DOX visits Aarhus. The musically gifted American was taken into David Byrne’s fold when the latter signed him to his record label, Luaka Bop. Eight albums later, White has not lost his edge and clear character. At the Festival’s Unofficial Opening Jim White will perform with DeSoto Caucus, and in Tegn på Trio (Signs of Trio) he will give his songs a new expression. Jim White is also one of the artists who will represent Aarhus at the Royal Danish Theatre when different Festival arrangements will be presented at the Royal Danish Playhouse in Copenhagen. Last but not least, Jim White will give guest lectures at the Royal Academy of Music during his stay in Aarhus.
The Russian mining town of Piramida on Svalbard was abandoned in 1998, left as if it were an imaginary scene from a time after a third world war. The people are gone, but the minimalist concrete estates remain as a monument to the life of days long gone. In The Ghost of Piramida, the Danish band Efterklang enters the town to gather its melancholic soul in the form of small sound bites that frame their latest release, Piramida. After the screening, Efterklang will perform the music and discuss the project with the audience. Director: Andreas Koefoed

Tegn på Trio (Signs of Trio)
The Old Maid and the Thief
The music comes in 3s, when 3x3 singers play with 3 musicians over the course of 3 days. Aarhus Festival pursues its quest for the perfect musical experience by allowing the best singers to sing the best songs with the best musicians at a venue with the best conditions for musicians and audience.
Experience Menotti’s weird fable about decaying morals and female cunning. This humorous 1939 radio opera in 14 acts can now be experienced for the first time at the Royal Danish Theatre and during Aarhus Festival, recast in a universe of medical romance novels and Desperate Housewives.
Exclusivity takes on a different meaning when a maximum of 200 people per day get the opportunity to get really close to a set of musicians who have all been diagnosed as ‘world class’.
Old maid Miss Todd lives in a small village together with her housemaid Laetitia, who is worried that she too may end her life as a spinster. Then vagabond Bob enters the lives of both women. Desperate for male company, they take him in and shower him with attention. But Bob is not who he pretends to be and soon all are entwined in intricate lies.
The base trio accompanying the singers is made up of Argentinian Diego Schissi, Swedish Gustaf Ljunggren and American Tony Garnier.

Festival Concert
Festuge Classic 2013
The Aarhus Festival Concert starts with Wagner’s prelude to the Mastersingers of Nuremberg. American–Japanese Eugene Tzigane interprets Brahms’ beautiful Symphony No 2. Aarhus Symphony Orchestra’s own Oliver Nordahl plays solo in Strauss’ marvellous and technically demanding oboe concerto. In this, the orchestra looks ahead to Strauss’ 150th birthday, which will be celebrated around the world in 2014. In April 1945, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s oboist was stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen where he visited Strauss and asked if he would ever write a solo concert for the oboe. Strauss answered with a curt “No”. The question must have lingered in the head of the ageing composer because as early as February the following year, the melodious piece was premiered in Zürich.
Despite his tender age, 25-year-old American Joshua Weilerstein, Malko winner of 2009, has become an incredibly popular guest conductor in Aarhus’ Symphonic Hall. This time he will bring his sister Alisa, who is five years his senior and has earned herself a name as one of the greatest cello players of our time. In Aarhus, she will perform Bruch’s popular Kol Nidrei and Tchaikovsky’s lovely Variations on a Rococo Theme, with which she made her debut at the age of 12. This musical cornucopia also includes a performance by German soprano Mojca Erdmann. Performed by: Joshua Weilerstein (conductor), Mojca Erdmann (soprano), Alisa Weilerstein (cello), Palle Kjeldgaard (host), Chorus of the Danish National Opera and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.
Performed by: Eugene Tzigane (conductor), Oliver Nordahl (oboe) and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

Music The piano trio has always been the most popular jazz combination. Just think of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Michel Pettrucciani, each of whom took trio jazz to new heights. Brought together for the occasion, this trio is made up of three of the world’s best jazz musicians. Dado Moroni is in league with Stefano Bollani and Enrico Pieranunci, while Reuben Rogers has made his name as the US’ new great international bass player. Last but not least, Jazz House Montmartre’s renowned house drummer Alex Riel is Denmark’s greatest international name in jazz. The trio will hit the Great American Songbook and give us a classic swinging Montmartre night.

Ujazz is for people who appreciate music as an organic form of art and who have no qualms about classifying a 20-piece electric guitar orchestra as jazz. This year’s programme promises a great deal and the names in it guarantee great artistic quality and profound musical vision.
STEFAN PASBORG & DAWDA JOBARTEH Ujazz is proud to present the first collaboration between Danish Stefan Pasborg and resident Gambian Dawda Jobarteh. Stefan Pasborg is well known from his popular funkjazz/afrobeat trio Ibrahim Electric, while Dawda Jobarteh, whom Danish music magazine GAFFA described as “a kora master”, has been part of Pierre Dørge’s jazz troupe the New Jungle Orchestra. Time: 15.00-15.50
JESPER ZEUTHEN PLUS Freejazz legend Jesper Zeuthen has collected a super band of established Danish improvising musicians, whom he will take to Ujazz under the name Jesper Zeuthen PLUS. The band is an extended version of the Jesper Zeuthen Trio and has Jesper Zeuthen himself playing the alto saxophone, while Kasper Tranberg plays the trumpet, Kristian Tangvik the tuba and Adam Pultz Melbye the bass. Time: 16.00-16.50

LARS GREVE & CARSTEN DAHL Experimental jazz meets classical jazz in the Greve Dahl duo – two established and recognised Danish jazz musicians. Despite his young age, saxophonist Lars Greve has performed on a large number of releases. In 2012, he received the prestigious Sonning award. Pianist Carsten Dahl is known both in Denmark and abroad for his keyboard talents. Jazz magazine Jazz Special named his album Metamorphosis ‘Jazz Release of the Year’ in 2011. Time: 17.00-17.50

OSGOOD, FRIIS & GOODIEPAL Drummer, multi-instrumentalist, com poser and musical entrepreneur are just a pick of the labels that Kresten Osgood effortlessly take on. He has convened an almost infinite number of musical groups of prominent artists from home and abroad. At Ujazz he will play with experimental folk, jazz and avant-garde singer Maria Laurette Friis and the controversial artist Goodiepal, who in 2001 released the electronic album Narc Beacon, described by several critics as brilliant, innovative and original. Kl. 18.00-18.50
MURCOF (MX) & TONY BUCK (AU) Mexico meets Australia when the electro-minimalist Murcof plays with percussionist and drummer Tony Buck. Both musicians have a varied set of projects behind them. Murcof collaborates with live musicians, whose sounds he samples and edits. His main sources of inspiration are classical music, baroque music, minimal techno, dub and industrial music. Tony Buck grew up in Australia, developed his talents in Japan and Amsterdam, and now lives in Berlin. This project is the first meeting of these two giants. Time: 19.00-19.50
THE FISH (FR) The Fish is a Parisian freejazz-trio, made up of three of France’s most recognised musicians of the past decade: Jean-Luc Guionnet on the alto saxophone, Benjamin Duboc on the bass and Edward Perraud on the drums. Last year, the trio released the album Moon Fish. Their music has been described as Albert Aylerinspired intense and energetically explosive. Time: 20.00-20.50
RHYS CHATHAM (US) Composer, guitarist and trumpet player are just some of Rhys Chatham’s titles. His main hunting grounds have been avant-garde, minimalism and post-rock, and he is best known for his compositions for the Guitar Orchestra. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Chatham played in New York with artists such as Glenn Branca and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. On this occasion, Chatham will play with a large troupe of Danish musicians Time: 21.00-21.50
SVIN VS. OXX Post-rock and freejazz band Svin entering the ring to face the local boys of heavy-instrumental Oxx promises to become quite a fight. They will punch each other musically in an attempt to create a common sound. Both are underground bands within their genre, but Svin played at Aarhus’ SPOT festival in 2012 and have toured extensively. One thing the bands have in common is their experimental use of the saxophone Time: 22.00-22.50
CTM Unpredictable, complex and compelling are some of the words that characterise CTM. Front woman Cecilie Trier has recently become an exciting name in the alternative Danish music scene. Before she started her solo project, CTM, she was part of Le Fiasko, Choir of Young Believers and Chimes & Bells. The cellist and songwriter takes her inspiration from sources such as Talk Talk, but has found her own sound in a mix of 1980s drums, computer sounds, incredible precision at the keyboard and a sonorous voice with which she enchants her audiences. Time: 23.00-24.00

VICTORIA MELODY (UK): MAJOR TOM When Victoria Melody discovers by chance that her dog, Major Tom, has what it takes to enter a beauty contest, she decides to register it and use the occasion to take a peek into the world of dog shows. Major Tom’s debut ends rather embarrassingly and so Victoria Melody decides to experience for herself what she has done to Major Tom: she enters the Mrs England 2013 beauty pageant. Major Tom is a one-woman/one-dog show, which describes in a comical way the experiences of dog and owner judged only on their looks. In Major Tom, Victoria Melody merrily probes the fascination with fame and beauty in a world where the winner takes it all. Artist Ursula Martinez has been the creative mentor for the show.
”Beneath the show’s natural charm there’s an uneasy commentary on self-obsession.” Exeunt Magazine

VICTORIA MELODY (UK): NORTHERN SOUL Victoria Melody gets up close when she explores the nooks and crannies of the world surrounding us. For a whole year she lived with pigeon breeders, and recently she learned to dance northern soul. And indeed, Northern Soul is a show about the northern soul music and dance culture, about pigeons, and most of all about Victoria Melody herself. Northern Soul is for people with a good sense of humour who love people. The performance at Aarhus Festival is the first in Denmark. The director behind the show is the critically acclaimed Spanish– British artist Ursula Martinez, who has herself previously performed with her cult striptease act at the International Night Cabaret in Aarhus. After the show on 6 September there will be a Northern Soul/Motown club night at HeadQuarters. Free entry.

SARAH KENDALL (AU): GET UP, STAND-UP London-based comedian Sarah Kendall visits the Festival with her show Get Up, Stand-Up. The show was well received in the UK where, in 2004, Kendall was the first woman in nine years to be nominated for the Perrier Award. Sarah Kendall has taken a break from comedy for a couple of years to spend some time with her family, and is now back with her intelligent observational comedy. Among other things, Get Up, StandUp is about the world that Kendall’s daughter will grow up in and, with references to The Ugly Duckling, about how society values beauty higher than talent.
”A truly brilliant show that’s just got to be seen.” Chortle.co.uk
”Thoughtful, intelligent, enlightening and… really funny. Kendall has a dry, subtle British-style sense of humour.” The Observer
CARL-EINAR HÄCKNER (SE): SWEDISH MEATBALLS Swedish Meatballs is Swedish CarlEinar Häckner’s latest solo show, which has received high praise from critics at the comedy festivals in Adelaide and Melbourne, to name but two. Swedish Meatballs is a compilation of clowning, magical chaos, razor-sharp humour and odd songs. In Sweden Carl-Einar Häckner is an institution and a superstar, so there is a good reason for his latest solo show to be called Big in Sweden. Carl-Einar Häckner is also responsible for the variety show The Road at Hermans. Read more on page 15.

Huey Mecatl
Theatre Replacement & Neworld Theatre (CA): Winners and Losers
Huey Mecatl is a gigantic pentagonal stringed instrument, built from 10 shipping containers on two levels. Between the top five containers, 10 strings are strung and played by 10 musicians with custom-made tools. The whole setup is led by one conductor. The containers work as resonance chambers which convey the grand industrial sound of Huey Mecatl. The music that can be experienced every night during the Festival has been composed specifically for the instrument and encompasses a huge sound landscape. During the late concerts, the instrument is flooded with artificial light. Huey Mecatl is a Mexican invention and the Aarhus show is the first time the instrument can be heard outside Latin America. In the daytime, Festival visitors can explore Huey Mecatl themselves.
Is Tom Cruise a loser? Is Mexico a winner? And are your own kids winners or losers? Winners and Losers is a Canadian play which in a handson and light-hearted manner observes who the winners and losers are in the new reality. Actors Marcus Youssef and James Long do not shy away from exposing themselves and measuring their own and each other’s life against the winner–loser scale. Winners and Losers premiered in 2012 and has since been performed at the Gateway Theatre, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, the Brighton Festival and the Magnetic North Theatre Festival. The director behind Winners and Losers is the acclaimed Chris Abraham, who also directed Eternal Hydra, Claudia and Boxhead. Today, he is the artistic director of the Crow’s Theatre in Canada.

Night Cabaret The brand new theatre house and culture centre Hermans, in Tivoli Friheden, will offer top-level entertainment, excitement, seduction, magic, comedy and music when it opens its doors to Carl-Einar Häckner’s variety programme The Road. Carl-Einar Häckner: ‘The Road’ Carl-Einar Häckner is a superstar in Sweden who knows how to combine comedy, music, magic and illusion in a way that makes the sum of it all look grotesque and exquisitely funny. Aarhus Festival is proud to be able to present Carl-Einar’s brand new variety show The Road, in which he plays out his pompous, brave and hilarious act with his fabulous musicians and a string of hand-picked artists.

AAF — Images Festival “Occupy Denmark with arts and create utopias through arts!” This was the call that IMAGES FESTIVAL sent to hundreds of artists from more than 40 countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America. From 30 August to 7 September, they will dictate the artistic agenda at Godsbanen in Aarhus under the slogan ‘Occupy Utopia’.
Amadou & Mariam (ML)

It is organised by the Centre for Culture and Development (Center for Kultur og Udvikling).
When Amadou & Mariam took to the Orange Scene in 2012, it was the fifth time the blind couple had got the Roskilde Festival audience on its feet. Listen and dance along as Mali’s leading and critically acclaimed duo treat the crowd to a concert full of terrific electric afro-pop.

The City Park For a short moment, the Festival wants to reshape the living reality of the City Park and counter the way in which we normally think of our city, creating a City Park that limits motorised traffic and looks at the safety of the more vulnerable road users. We want to build a City Park that is an experience in its own right.
Active and tranquil at the same time, the City Park should be a meeting point in the city. A central construction marks the connection between Musikhusparken and Rådhusparken and the crossings from one to the other. It serves as a transition, viewing platform, playground installation and grandstand in front of the City Park’s stage.
Aarhus Festival’s City Park will be created through a partnership between culture and commerce, for the benefit of all. It will be the venue of events for both adults and children.
Cyclists cross through the City Park on a meandering track with experiences and facilities specifically for them. Within the cycling zone are marked areas that make walking safer for pedestrians.

EMMANUEL JAL & RUNE SKYUM-NIELSEN Clichés are few and far between when Emmanuel Jal sings and raps about peace on earth. The 33-yearold Sudanese knows what he is dreaming about. When he was seven years old, government militia killed his mother and he was tricked into joining a murderous child army in Ethiopia. He fled, and ever since has used his traumatic past as fuel for his music. During the Festival, Jal will tell about taming his demons and making them groove in an attempt to reach out as widely as he can with his message. Emmanuel Jal will talk with culture writer Rune SkyumNielsen, author of Nr.1, a book that covers the history of Danish hip-hop.
Musikhuset Aarhus, Lille Sal Thomas Jensens Allé 1 September, 16.00-17.00 (doors open at 15.40, and Efterklang’s composition Lyden af København (The Sound of Copenhagen) starts at 15.45) Kr. 100 from billetlugen.dk or tlf. 89 40 40 40.
