Welcome to Aarhus Festival Aarhus Festival is one of the largest cultural events in Scandinavia and certainly the cultural highlight of the year in Aarhus. From the 31st of August to the 9th September, the city’s streets, squares, parks, concert venues, theatres, galleries and museums come to life with events that you most likely cannot experience elsewhere. The festival is a thematic event and the theme of the year determines the artistic programme. This year's theme is ‘Big – size matters’. Aarhus Festival has decided to gather the events with a strong appeal to international festival guests and present them in this special edition of the festival programme. The entire programme contains more than 1000 events – find more on aarhusfestival.com and download our app available in both the App Store and from Google Play. This programme is our way of greeting all expats and international families in Aarhus and Central Jutland and showing you what kind of city you have come to. Hopefully, this edition will encourage you to take part in the festival and re-discover the city of Aarhus. We warmly welcome you.
AAF — Interview By request from the Festival, architects from France, among others, along with architecture students from Aarhus, have created urban spaces with sustainable materials. Along with local production companies, acknowledged film makers have produced animation films and feature films, of which several have received international awards afterwards. Famous Michelin chefs have been working at the pots in the kitchens of local restaurants and have together created exceptionally delicious gourmet food, and students at one of Aarhus' teachers' colleges have learned to make gigantic dolls by an Australian theatre company. All with the purpose of giving the visitors to the Festival experiences that are out of the ordinary and leave a mark on local everyday life.
The Festival should learn from the world In recent years, Aarhus Festival has developed from a local town fair to an international event with significant international attention. Jens Folmer Jepsen, who is on his sixth year as the executive director of the Festival, makes a virtue of this internationalisation.
- Aarhus should be worth the visit. The artists and ultimately the audience will hopefully be left with the feeling that Aarhus is a city that, in addition to its nature and culture, is also characterised by being a city where it is possible to be challenged because of the availability of great conditions, says Jens Folmer Jepsen.
Cultural and artistic development across national borders is of great significance to the executive director of Aarhus Festival, Jens Folmer Jepsen. In recent years, this has resulted in a large number of new constellations during the Festival within music, film, food and architecture, where skilled local forces have entered into cooperation with foreign like-minded people in order to move towards new heights during the Festival and not least to develop and be inspired from each other.
During this year's Festival, the audience can, among other things, experience the result of an international exchange, when the Icelandic-Italian singer Emilíana Torrini takes the stage along with the musical Aarhus commune The DeSoto Caucus at the event The Medium-Rare Sessions.
- It is no longer just a matter of purchasing international shows, explains Jens Folmer Jepsen, and the basis of this strategy is clear: - The Aarhus Festival has a double task. First of all, we should show the world what we are capable of in Aarhus, and second of all, we should become even better and become an even more interesting city to live in and to visit.

AAF — Interview Grundfos has its headquarters in Bjerringbro and is very much focused towards the main city of Central Jutland, Aarhus. The company has subsidiaries in 56 countries. - We would like to support the activities that are of an international nature. Aarhus Festival is an international event that has tentacles into the big world and a global network. Therefore, it is natural for us to get involved in this event. There is a large number of expats employed at Grundfos, and Kim Klastrup sees it as a significant challenge to offer a sufficient amount of activities to the expats coming to Denmark.
A promising sponsorship of a spectacular event
- We obviously provide practical help, but life is not just practical – there is also a cultural and social dimension that it can be difficult for the company to take care of. Therefore, it is a great help that Aarhus Festival initiates activities where expats can meet others in a similar situation, says Kim Klastrup, and continues:
Since 2003, Grundfos has been a sponsor of the Aarhus Festival – a sponsorship that makes the company an active and visible part of the Festival. A walk through the Aarhus Festival City Park provides a tangible meeting with one of the results of Grundfos' sponsorship of Aarhus Festival. You see, the international pumpmanufacturing company, which employees 18,000 employees worldwide, has its world premiere of an enormous water volcano, which explodes in varying intervals around the clock and sends a cascade of water into a large pool.
- In Denmark, there is a great need for us to become more aware of the situation of expats and newcomers in general. While the expats are here, it is extremely important that they are received in a positive way, making them as well as their families feel welcome.
Kim Klastrup, branding manager at Grundfos, is happy that the company is visible through this water installation at this year's Festival. It is new that we contribute with something this dramatic at the Aarhus Festival. The water volcano makes our sponsorship visible and gives locals as well as visitors something to be fascinated about. This is much more interesting and promising for us than having our name on a Festival programme.

Aarhus Festival invites expats and their families to attend an outstanding reception in the popup Festival restaurant, The Gourmet Grill, on Saturday the 1st of September from 3 to 5 PM. At the reception, you can relax with your family as well as meet other international employees from all over the world and you can enjoy the special Festival atmosphere while also indulging in delicious and mouth-watering delicacies. The delicacies are prepared by the founder of Mefisto, Lars Kyllesbech, who is not only one of the best chefs in town, but also has a Michelin star on his resume.

A different television show
Our Big World band, consisting of musicians and soloists from several places in the world, performing new songs written by great artists.
Each year, the Aarhus Festival is started with a Gala opening, where Her Majesty the Queen Margrethe the 2nd, patron of the Festival, attends. This year, the Gala opening is a news show performed live from the great hall of Musikhuset Aarhus and from places all over the big world. The show is designed as a news show, which covers the largest population the world has ever experienced from various angles and corners of the world. Instead of the reporters and experts that usually populate news studios, Our Big World has artists as hosts and reporters. At Musikhuset Aarhus, the audience will, among other things, find the hostess and author Josefine Klougart and the

Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls

It is big, grand and a must-see when 180 Catalonians visit the Aarhus Festival and build human towers. On each other's shoulders and in up to eight layers, Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls present the more than 200 years old Catalan tradition, which has developed from the Ball de Valencians from the 18th century, a dance from Valencia. The foundation of the human tower rests on the strongest shoulders, while the youngest and lightest children climb all the way to the top of the living sculpture. Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls are a symbol of the town Valls in Catalonia. The members are from all walks of life and include children as well as adults and elderly – several families have participated for many generations. Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls have built towers at several large opening ceremonies, including the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. In 2010, Unesco added the "human tower discipline" to the list of protected cultural heritage.

The Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan is convincing in everything she does. After years of apprenticeship with Damien Rice, where she, among other things, played bass and sang, and after warm praise from Herbie Hancock in connection with her participation on his 'The Imagine Project', she was ready to go solo. Her debut 'Sea Sew' is a masterpiece, which was for example nominated to the prestigious Mecury Prize. This was followed up by an intensive tour around the world and the album 'Passenger' – produced by the giant Joe Henry. Big voice, big personality, big songs and a band that has a lot of experience working together, guaranteeing a big experience during the Festival.
The quality is x-large when the musical commune The DeSoto Caucus invite the Icelandic-Italian singer Emilíana Torrini with them on stage. Since her debut album 'Love in the Time of Science' from 1999, Emilíana Torrini has published a total of six solo albums, three in English, three in Icelandic, with very different musical expressions, from electropop over pop-rock to acoustic, folk music-inspired songs. American Brian Lopez, who released his first solo album, 'Ultra', in the spring, will kick off the concert with The DeSoto Caucus. In recent years, The DeSoto Caucus have performed during the Aarhus Festival with Howe Gelb and Mark Lanegan, M. Ward, CV Jørgensen and Josh Rouse, among others. The band will release their second album, 'Offramp Rodeo', on the 3rd of September.

Little Big Thing 1:1:∞
Before I Die
In New York, the city's old freight traffic railway has been turned into the public area 'High Line' for the citizens and visitors of the city. With inspiration from this, architecture students have, in a big cooperation with the Aarhus Festival, created 'Little Big Thing' for the square Store Torv – a piece of urban space furniture of a size that makes the term urban space building more fitting.
As part of 'Little Big Thing', eight large boards will be integrated, where passer-bys are encouraged to share hopes and dreams for the future in the public space. This brings are world-wide art project by the American artist and urban planner Candy Change to Denmark for the first time. IKEA Aarhus and DR are also participating in the project, and therefore, you can also share your dreams for the future during the Festival in IKEA Aarhus and on dr.dk/ kunst. There is room for big as well as small wishes on the Before I Die wall.
'Little Big Thing' is the hang out place of the Festival, with places to sit, small stages and platforms, from which you can see the city from a whole new angle. Among other things, 'Little Big Thing' will be the venue for the concert 'Songs from the big Aarhus songbook' (Sange fra den store aarhusianske sangbog) and 'What Cheer? Brigade'.

Tight Spot In the middle of the darkness of the culture centre Godsbanen, 'Tight Spot' is crammed in. The enormous inflatable globe installation is the latest art project created by the Scottishborn New Yorker, musician and artist David Byrne. A low frequency sound from speakers placed inside the globe create small vibrations. The sound landscape is David Byrne's own voice, which has been recorded and processed beyond recognition.

Here, everything will be put into perspective – right from being a red-head over racism to why children are intimidating. This partially auto-biographical comedy show is delivered by a fast-rising star, who is comparable to Joan Rivers and Sarah Millican. Not for the faint of heart ...
At the age of 17, British Josie Long won her first BBC Comedy Award, and since then, the now 30-year-old stand-upper has reaped several acknowledged awards. Now, she is visiting the Festival with her sixth comedy show 'Romance & Adventure'. It is going to be silly and fun and filled with big laughs, and Josie Long promises to swear less than usual.

AAF — Food Food Festival: Denmark's new food festival for children as well as adults with an interest in food. Here, the best Danish and Nordic breeders, producers and chefs will be gathering. You will have the opportunity to taste, smell and work with ingredients from Nordic cuisine. Food Festival will fill your stomach, head and heart.
Food Festival is 120,000 sqm of experiences with some of the best ingredients and food minds in Denmark. The festival includes a long line of cooking schools, where you can learn everything from bread baking to schnapps seasoning, and a number of the best Danish food companies will be there and show their products and teach you their skills. You can learn about new Nordic cereals and learn how to knead better bread. There will be butcher's courses, sausage stuffing, beer tasting and live brewing of beer. You can learn to gather seaweed for cooking on seaweed safaris, cutting fish, there is a food cinema, cooking competitions,
you can milk cows, churn butter, meet farm dairies and learn about cheese production, maturing and cooking with new Nordic cheeses. You can participate in a chocolate workshop, and learn about original and new types of cereal. The Festival will have a giant vegetable market from the best vegetable breeders in Denmark. And it has an independent children's area with, among other things, a bouncy castle made from organic hay and cooking over a bonfire with the kids. Wassim Hallal and the fish chef Boris Buono – formerly Kroghs and Noma – will set up restaurants on the site, and a number of other interesting chefs will have special courses and food schools

Under Byen vs Sidse Carstens

Music, film and installation meet in a sensory union in the concert installation of the rock band Under Byen and the film director Sidse Carsten. Through integration of the presence and physicality of the rock concert and the materiality and sense of space of the video installation, the audience is let into a world of symbolism and strong emotions.
The three composers Hannah Schneider, Heidi Mortenson and Kristina Holgersen and the visual artist Signe Klejs meet around the topic BIG. They explore abandoned buildings and past history at Aarhus Harbour. Places that used to be filled with life and which are now empty and lifeless. Together, they will transform atmospheres, sounds and images they meet along the way into a concert. The result of their cooperation can be experienced at Øst for Paradis.

Already when we are born, our gender is a determining factor regarding what clothes we wear and how we see ourselves. But is it possible to choose how to express your gender? And what does this mean to your love life? Gender, choice and love are the focal points when the American author and debater Erica Jong meets journalist and author Stéphanie Surrugue in an Aarhus Conversation Erica Jong had her international breakthrough as an author with the novel 'Fear of Flying' from 1973, which caused a stir because of its direct approach regarding the sexual needs of women. The novel has just been republished.
'I guess if the stage exploded...' is an unforgettable experience. At least, it is the goal of Sylvia Rimat's performance that no one leaves the hall without remembering everything that has taken place on stage. Using memory techniques and assignments, the audience will be trained systematically during the show in remembering – hopefully forever. The performance artist Sylvia Rimat, who was born in Germany and lives in England, is often focused on memory, personal stories and awareness in her performances. She has developed 'I guess if the stage exploded…' with the help of several memory experts. Immediately after the show, Sylvia Rimat will be participating in an Aarhus Conversation with the Israeli bestselling author Eran Katz about memory techniques. The Aarhus Conversation is a part of this event.

Farewell Aarhus! Secret Theatre (CA)
The silo facility De Fem Søstre (the five sisters) at Aarhus Harbour will form the setting for 'Beginning', which is constructed as a dialogue between the performance of the dancer Andrea Božić and the handmade drawings of the illustrator Julia Willms. On the concrete walls of the silos, the performance is started with the question: ”Where do we begin?”, which is followed by projections of the drawings of Julia Willms, created in close coordination with the shadow of Andrea Božić when moving across a podium. The performance takes place in the intersection between dancing and drawing as a negotiation between two people.
'The Farewell Project' is about the small goodbyes that have big consequences, about leaving a small place for a larger city and about creating a balance between quality of life and workload. A shop in midtown is turned into a temporary video podcast, where passerbys and the audience in the shop become participants in a collective story about how the urban society and new online meeting places such as YouTube and Facebook affect who we are, how we behave – and not least how we treat each other. The Canadian company Secret Theatre was created by Dustin Harvey and others in 2003 with a vision about exploring new media that have resulted in new ways of being together in the virtual world. Dustin Harvey is very inspired by the German group of artists Gob Squad, and he has helped develop their critically acclaimed performance 'Saving the World' from 2008.
The Croatian choreographer and dancer Andrea Božić is known for her kaleidoscopic performances, merging different art forms such as film, dancing, theatre and new types of media. Julia Willms, who was born in Germany, is an illustrator and lives in Holland. She is known for her video installations, which are often connected to a place and take place in the borderland between space and architectural environments.

"The clouts on the head are lashed out with such precision and professionalism that you have to surrender, head bang and beg for more."
A "column" of trash metal, death metal and big noise will be thundering across Aarhus when the band HateSphere give a concert in the car park of Salling. From the seven-storey concrete rotunda, the audience will have a view of the band, who will be roaring the aggressive notes upwards from the bottom of the rotunda in the vertical concert venue created for this purpose.

Since their self-titled debut album from 2000, HateSphere have released seven studio albums, including the latest, 'The Great Bludgeoning' from 2011, which has won a GAFFA award in December in the category Danish Hard rock Release of the Year, among other things. The band, which currently includes Peter Lyse Hansen, Esben 'Esse' Hansen, Jakob Nyholm, Jimmy Nedergaard and Mike Park, is one of the most popular Danish metal bands in Denmark as well as other countries.

What Cheer? Brigade (US)
On the 6th of September, the Aarhus Festival will present the one day festival Ujazz. This festival pushes the limits of jazz music and only presents newly composed or improvised jazz.
Big as a girls' marching band, punky as a young Tom Waits ... With brass and percussion instruments, the 21-person marching band 'What Cheer? Brigade' will be visiting the Aarhus Festival. The band, which is from the American state Rhode Island, breaks with all common traditions of the genre by mixing styles such as samba, Bollywood, Balkan, hiphop and heavy metal. The result is explosive and festive. 'What Cheer? Brigade' has become a YouTube phenomenon after uploading a video where one of the members of the band, with the entire band as backup, quits and literally blows away the boss and the unreasonable working conditions at a local hotel in a loud and sensational way.
The names on this year's programme include the former Led Zeppelin base player John Paul Jones, who has found a new playmate in Norwegian Helge Sten (formerly from Deathprod). The music is an extreme exploration of the noise universe, so expect anything other than 1970s rock. They will be performing together under the name Minibus Pimps. TIBETAN MONKS CREATE UNIQUE MANDALA Witness the making of a masterpiece when Tibetan monks visit Aarhus Festival 2012 and create a sand mandala in the Aarhus Art Building. This unique work of art will be made by carefully placing millions of grains of coloured sand in a precise pattern – a ritual known for millennia. Once completed, the sand mandala is ritually swept into a pile and thrown into the sea. In 2009, Joshua Weilerstein won the Malko competition in Copenhagen as the youngest ever, only 21 years old. This became the start of an impressive career, which has already taken him to a number of leading American orchestras and naturally also to Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Stanislav Pronin was born in Moscow, but trained in Odessa, where so many star violinists come from, including David Oistrakh.
The tenor Joseph Calleja has many fans in Denmark, not least because he has performed with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra on other occasions. Experience the choir of the Danish National Opera and the principal flute player Lena Kildahl Larsen together with Ulla Miilmann in a double flute concert by Joachim Andersen. Giordano Bellincampi will gather all the musical threads. The City Park The area at the music venue Musikhuset's park, the city hall park and the street Frederiks Allé forms the setting of a big public area for the whole family. Here, you will find music, theatre, food, sports, books, an inflatable play centre, model trains and much more. The large park has been decorated with grass, garden sprinklers and a water volcano.
Whisper your darkest secrets to the walking giant ear, make high fives and hand signs with the gigantic hand and tickle the enormous toes of the enormous foot. The doll company Snuff Puppets from Australia, who visited the Aarhus Festival in 2010, are back, this time with their 'Human Body Parts', showing the special characteristics of body parts in enlarged form.
