This piece was commissioned by Laurence Osborn as a continuation of his LSO Soundhub Change Ringing project, with funds from Arts Council England.

Duration: c. 8 minutes

Instrumentation Two Violins Double Bass Percussionist with two bells, two milk frothers, wooden brushes, hard and soft beater The instruments may be amplified if desired. Please aim for as natural a sound as possible in the amplification.

Performance Notes Glissandi and/or ‘falls’ from a note start immediately and happen evenly for the full duration indicated. The important thing about the ‘wide, slow vibrato’ moments is that the vibrato is very wide (up to 1/4 tone in each direction) and that it occurs irregularly and is not ever coordinated with the other parts. Whenever a microtone notation is present, NB that I am not asking for specific/precise quarter-tones, but rather deviations of a not precisely determined size, which may reach a maximum of a quarter-tone. The important thing is that the altered pitch is audibly recognisable as an altered pitch. In passages where the quarter is moving in ‘unison’ the size of the deviations should be matched between players. In all other passages the deviations are free.

The bow is placed very near the bridge (msp), the left hand makes as many oscillations over the indicated distance as possible throughout the full duration of the indicated note. The bracketed note indicates the duration the effect continues. [cf Sciarrino, Capricci N. 4 per violino]

Overpressure of the bow causes the sound to distort, eventually becoming a ‘scratch’ tone. This effect comes on gradually. The player should aim for the ‘scratch’ sound to be fully established about 3/4 through the notated duration.
