> Organise a house- and pet-sitter; there are websites to help you find the best person. This is a good option if you have more than one animal needing care.

> Pet feeding services are another option. Someone will visit daily to check your pet is safe and to provide company.

> Traditional boarding kennels and catteries offer professional care and sometimes the chance to socialise your pet.

Before you leave checks

> Check your pet insurance is up to date.

> Avoid giving them a meal just before travelling so they don’t have a full stomach in the car.

> Attach a collar and tag with your phone number and, for dogs, council registration tags.

> Update your pet’s microchip details, in case they go missing and lose their tags.
