The main settlement is the Republic of Whangamōmona, first settled in 1895 with a population of 300 at its peak. Now home to around 100 residents, the village is centred around the Whangamōmona Hotel, which offers accommodation and hearty meals for locals and travellers alike.

Whangamōmona declared itself a republic in 1989, complete with its own presidential election, passport (which can be obtained from the Hotel) and iconic Republic Day held every second year in January, the next one being 21 January, 2023.

The Forgotten World Adventures rail cart excursion, and new pedal-powered option, is opening this unique area to new visitors, as is the growing range of walking and cycling routes and accommodation options in the area.
