In the region’s main city, New Plymouth, there’s a huge selection of things to do, from waterfront walks and art trails to surfing, tramping and cycling. The city has world-class art galleries and museums and a growing entertainment scene, as well as exciting events throughout the year. Outside of New Plymouth, the coastline offers more than great surf. There are welcoming cafés, art and craft studios, charming small towns and opportunities to tap into the area’s rich history – explore the museums, discover the history of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, visit shipwrecks and eat to your heart’s content.

There is every opportunity to get off the beaten track in Taranaki, from quirky townships where you’ll be sure to find treasures and bargains alike, to tranquil bush walks and remote highways that are so sparsely used, petrol stations cease to exist.
