• All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand. International credit cards can be used, provided they have a four-digit pin number encoded.

SAFETY FIRST • Please don’t swim alone and take particular care at surf beaches. Rips are strong currents of water running out to sea; they are very dangerous for swimmers, but are difficult to identify. If the beach is patrolled by lifeguards, always swim between the red and yellow flags as they identify the safest area to swim.

Weather Watch It’s important to know what’s happening with the weather. New Zealand’s weather is changeable and unpredictable; parts of the country are susceptible to cyclones, other parts to strong winds and heavy rain. Sudden drops in temperature can take you from hot days to cold nights, especially in spring and autumn, so be prepared. Carry extra clothing, rain gear, sun hats and sun block.

Be conscious that New Zealand’s UV is very strong. Always protect your skin from the sun. New Zealand’s official weather forecaster is MetService, available online, where you’ll find up-to-date information on localised areas, as well as specifically for marine and surf, mountains and parks. Local and national radio stations also regularly update weather predictions. Tune in on the car radio.

tips for

road trips

On a budget Some travel costs you can’t do much about, though it pays to shop around for rental car deals – and a huge range of accommodation options translates to a range of related prices, too. From camping at Department of Conservation (DOC) sites, to booking into high-end, beachside resorts – the price of a bed for the night varies significantly. If you’re watching your dollars, here’s how to save: • Consider travelling in off-peak season. The height of New Zealand summer – mid-December to March – is when New Zealand families are holidaying. If you can take your road trip earlier or later, you’ll save on accommodation costs. • Keep an eye out for Farmers’ Markets. Many towns and cities run markets on weekend days. They’re a great place to pick up cheaper fruit, vegetables, fish, free-range eggs, artisan bread, honey and a lot more – and the produce is likely to be super fresh and probably organic. • Orchards, market gardens and berry farms selling direct from the gate are well worth stopping for. They tend to operate on the honesty box system, so ensure you have coins for very good deals on apples, citrus, feijoas, nuts, grapes and vegetables. • Shop around for petrol. Some service stations are cheaper than others.

Doubtless Bay © Destination Northland

New Zealand is great for travelling by car. It’s a long, narrow country with intriguing roads in all directions and while many of those roads are winding and narrow, they all lead somewhere interesting. 4

D

rive to the conditions, don’t be in a rush, and allow for plenty of stops along the way. Be spontaneous. While the plan may involve going from A to B, why not take that back road or explore the side roads? Do your research. Pick up maps and guides from an AA Centre or i-SITE, or check out itinerary ideas online. Book your accommodation online at www.aatraveller.co.nz

Kids in the car? Think about playing some car games and make a point of stopping to let them stretch their legs. New Zealand has plenty of quality, easily accessible playgrounds and even a run on the beach will help everyone enjoy the journey in the long run. Pack snacks. With or without hungry children in the car, it’s a good idea to have some food and bottled water to keep the driver’s energy levels up.

• Pick up an AA Smartfuel Membership, collect points on your travels and redeem them in the shape of discounts on petrol.

In the glovebox Have on hand: • Insect repellent • Sun block • Hand sanitiser • Tissues • Mobile phone • Torch • First aid kit • Plastic bag for rubbish

5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF

Northland

Waitangi Treaty Grounds © Waitangi Treaty Grounds BELOW LEFT: Lake Kaiiwi © Destination Northland INSET: Te Paki sand dunes © David Kirkland

DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU’VE SQUEEZED OUT EVERY LAST DROP OF NORTHLAND’S BEST BITS. HOW HISTORY SHAPED THE FUTURE To understand the critical decisions which would forever shape New Zealand, return to 1840. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds illustrates New Zealand’s most defining moments in history via a museum, treaty house and traditional Māori meeting house. Poignantly, there is a flagstaff erected in the very place the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, and an impressive ceremonial war canoe displayed in the waka house. The Treaty Grounds are a mere five minutes from Paihia, but will take you 180 years back in time. NORTHLAND’S BEST-KEPT SECRET Kai Iwi Lakes are rapidly being paraded across Instagram for their droolworthy waters and angelwhite sand. Walk the perimeter of an aquamarine Lake Taharoa and you’ll no doubt stop countless times. As each new sliver of empty champagne sand appears, you’ll be compelled to run down and dive in. Two campsites fringe the main lake, with various secluded spots to relax.

HEDGE YOUR BETS ON SPOTTING A KIWI Nocturnal, timid and notoriously elusive, kiwi are not fond of the limelight. But Kiwi North, a museum and heritage park features a kiwi house that can turn day into night. Patience is rewarded with kiwi sightings, especially around feeding time at 11am, 1 and 3pm. Geckos are the jokers of the enclosure, camouflaging into their surroundings with great panache. They’re such a tease and always seem to be smiling – or laughing at visitors unable to see them, perhaps? The resident tuatara are less disguised but resilient. Found only in New Zealand, their ancestors once roamed Earth with dinosaurs.

SURF GIGANTIC SAND DUNES You’ll be pulling sand out of your ears for weeks afterwards, but sand surfing is worth every persistent grain. The Te Paki sand dunes are nothing like those at an average beach. These beasts appear on the horizon mere inches below the skyline, and on a gorgeous bluebird day, the smooth, soft sand makes an irresistible slide. Once in the car park, you can rent a boogie board and venture out into what can only be described as a Sahara landscape. At first glance, the nearvertical descents are terrifying, but the moment you hurtle down one, you’ll be hungry for another. Raise your feet to go faster, or drag them in the sand to brake.

SURF THE GIGANTIC TE PAKI SAND DUNES ON A BOOGIE BOARD.

DIVE INTO PARADISE Dulux should have a paint titled ‘Poor Knights Islands’ such is the brilliance of the water here. Located 23km off Tutukākā Coast, several emerald islands litter a dazzling blue sea. While the above-surface colours of this protected marine reserve entice day trippers into the water, its the below-surface residents that tempt them to stay. A city of marine life exists between reefs, drop-offs and archways. It’s little wonder divers and snorkellers take seconds to jump in, but forever to climb out.

Northland

JOURNEY TO NORTHLAND AWASH WITH CAPTIVATING LEGENDS FROM CENTURIES PRIOR, EVERYTHING IN NORTHLAND TELLS A STORY. FROM THE WRITTEN TO THE WHISPERED, YOU’LL BE HANGING ON EVERY WORD.

A Nation was Born

N

orthland is an avid storyteller. Historic accounts flood from its age-worn settlements, tales pass between elders and their kin, and the land is steeped in Māori folklore. Visitors are provided with an excellent opportunity to learn about New Zealand’s earliest inhabitants, listen to the lore of the land and delve into a captivating past. Proud to be called the Birthplace of the Nation, discover a region instrumental in shaping the New Zealand you see today. Historians estimate that Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator, first settled at Hokianga Harbour in 925 AD. Centuries later, when the first Pakeha (Europeans) arrived, Māori and Pakeha had to learn – often turbulently – to live together. The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi occurred on 6 February 1840. This resulted in British control over the country or governance, depending on whether you're reading the English or Māori version. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds chronicles this occasion and the decision, mixed with

12

defiance, which was ultimately made by about 40 Māori chiefs on that day. The town of Kerikeri hosts some of the country’s oldest buildings, creaking with the weight of secrets trapped within their walls, while the ancient kauri trees of the Waipōua Forest, some five metres in diameter and 60 metres tall, have lived through every New Zealand milestone. The ocean, both New Zealand’s gateway and guardian, is wild and unruly on the west coast, while the east is privy to white-sand serenity. The Bay of Islands in particular hosts a bevy of idyllic isles and bays. In contrast, making it to the windwhipped tip of Cape Rēinga will result in the meeting of the Tasman Sea with the fierce Pacific. As one of New Zealand’s most sacred sites, it’s here Māori believe spirits of the dead depart the world. Whether you arrive in Northland to chase oceans, forest or townships, behind every beautiful vista there is an equally gripping story.

EXPLORE THE

Whangarei District

Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads, part of the Kaipara District on Northland's east coast, are popular holiday spots thanks to their white-sand beaches: five are within a 15-minute drive. Mangawhai takes its name from the stingray which bask in the clear harbour waters. Kick back and go fishing, swimming, surfing, birdwatching, horse riding or play golf. The golf course is among New Zealand’s top 10 courses. Visit the Mangawhai Museum which tells the story of events centred around the harbour. One of the standout features of Mangawhai Heads are the sand dunes looked after by the Department of Conservation. The 5km Mangawhai Walk takes you along the beach and up a track to outstanding views of Bream Head and the Hauraki Gulf.

Northland WAIPŪ IS A BONNY WEE PLACE WITH CAFÉS, BARS AND ART STUDIOS. THE TOWN’S ORIGINAL 940 EUROPEAN SETTLERS CAME FROM SCOTLAND VIA NOVA SCOTIA IN CANADA AND THE WAIPŪ MUSEUM TELLS THE STORY OF THEIR SETTLEMENT.

WAIPŪ HIGHLAND HERITAGE Led by Scotsman, Norman McLeod, almost 1000 Scottish Highlanders migrated to Waipū in 1854 having already journeyed to Nova Scotia and Australia. This great voyage is told in fascinating detail at the Waipū Museum, including heritage trails to historic sites such as the McLeod’s house, the church and the blacksmiths. The annual Waipū Highland Games are held every New Year’s Day, with haggis and field events aplenty.

t the southern end of the Whangārei District is Bream Bay’s spectacular arc of white sand and miles and miles of heavenly deserted beaches. While all the beaches have sand and surf in common, each one has its own distinct characteristics. Lovely Ruakākā has a children’s playground, and if you fancy a flutter, the Ruakākā Racecourse hosts about 10 races each

season. Just south of Ruakākā is Uretiti, a stretch of beach with sand dunes and a nudist section. It has a popular Department of Conservation campsite behind the dunes. Fabulous WHANGĀREI

W

hangārei is where giants gather: giants of geology, nature and history. Named Whangāreite-rerenga-paraoa by Māori, which means the gathering place of whales, it centres around a long, winding, tidal harbour overshadowed by rugged volcanic cones. Just a two-hour drive north of Auckland, Whangārei’s city is the 'big smoke' of the north. Centred around the waterfront, where the Hātea River joins the harbour, international cruising yachts berth here at the Town Basin, which is a charming hub of cafés and culture. Whangārei is a creative city with more craftspeople, proportionally, living here than anywhere else in New Zealand. This city is also renowned for its fascinating museums, amazing walkways and proximity to a number of incredible beaches. Whangārei Heads sunset © Getty Images

hangārei is a place surrounded by incredible natural beauty. It sits pretty at the centre of a region of beautiful beaches, tumbling waterfalls, twinkling caves and rugged hills, all worthy of getting out and exploring. There are 114 beaches spread along the Whangārei District's beautiful white-sand coast and fringing the harbour, so spending some time lazing on the beach should be an essential part of your Whangārei itinerary.

Situated not too far from the city, the Whangārei Falls are spectacular. These 26m-high falls are accessible via a 30-minute loop walk through native bush, and there are vantage points at the top and a picturesque picnic spot at the base. At Abbey Caves Reserve, explore three caves and their twinkling glowworms and fascinating stalactites. Read the safety signs first though, and be prepared to get wet!

T

he small yet lively Tutukākā Marina is the hub of the Tutukākā Coast. It's home to restaurants and bars, and it's where you'll find an extensive network of fishing and diving charters.

Game fish species abound in the deep blue Pacific water that washes this coast: at Tutukākā, you can hook up with a boat running everything from day charters to longer excursions as far north as the Three Kings. Tutukākā is also the gateway to the snorkelling and diving spots of the Northland coast – ‘Twin Wrecks’, two ex-navy vessels sunk to provide diving wrecks, and, of course, the Poor Knights Islands. This underwater spectacle of walls, caves, tunnels and 60m drop-offs creates a jaw-dropping experience for divers. Keep a tight bite on your mouthpiece!

Ōakura Bay This horseshoe bay is where teal water tickles soft golden sand and holiday homes sit invitingly just metres from the beach. The waves are punchy and keep surfers occupied for hours, while the clean beach pulls

swimmers into its crystal waters. At low tide an investigation of the rocky outcrop is a must, as are the ice creams, bought from the dairy and devoured on a stretch of sea-fronting grass.

TRANQUIL WATERS

C

olours feel accentuated in the Bay of Islands. When the sun shines on this subtropical micro-region, an impossibly blue sky bleeds into dazzling emerald water, and picture-perfect hills – plucked straight from the pages of a children’s book – roll into talcum

white sand. Once you’ve finished goggling these startling vistas, you’ll be inspired to dive in. Quite literally. You’ll find no issue pursuing paragliding and big-game fishing, snorkelling, sea kayaking and swimming with dolphins. Scattered with 144 islands between Cape Brett and Purerua Peninsula,

divers are delivered mile after mile of rocky coastline, with two noteworthy shipwrecks. Take a cruise in the company of whales, or sail to the world-famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ enthralled as your skipper navigates a route through the gap. Embark on walks to the aptly named Rainbow Falls, and

kayak up the Waitangi River to the thunderous Haruru Falls. History buffs will enjoy Russell, where some of New Zealand’s first permanent British citizens settled. If you’re a keen foodie, head to Kerikeri where you can source local fresh produce at the weekly Old Packhouse Market.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO • The Bay of Islands sits on the north-eastern coast of New

Zealand’s North Island and comprises of over 144 islands.

• Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator, first settled at

the Hokianga Harbour in 925 AD. For centuries after this Māori arrived in their waka (canoes). The Bay of Islands is home to tribes such as the Ngāpuhi.

• The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi took place in 1840.

Learn more at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Open daily, except Christmas Day.

• In 2006 a study found that the Bay of Islands has the second bluest sky in the world after Rio de Janeiro.

• Located in what’s often referred to as the ‘winterless

north’, winters are mild and summers are hot. Typically, temperatures are 20-22°C in summer and 15-16°C in winter.

• Sheltered bays and tropical currents from the equator make the water very inviting.

Hundertwasser’s Kawakawa

P

aradise for trainspotters, the Bay of Islands vintage train runs down the middle of Kawakawa’s main street to Taumarere Station on Fridays and weekends and daily during the school and public holidays. While in Kawakawa, see the unusual Hundertwasser public toilets. The curved shapes and brightly coloured ceramic tiles and bottles in the beautiful toilet block are the Austrian architect’s only southern hemisphere project. PAGE 9 - REGIONAL MAP

year-round destination full of charm and incredible scenery, Russell is a pleasant place to spend time before embarking on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail.

See the country’s oldest church, Christ Church, built in 1836; its walls are scarred by musket and cannonball fire. Visit Pompallier Mission, constructed in 1842 to print Māori language books.

Russell is one of the country’s oldest European settlements and was once a major whaling and trading centre. It’s hard to imagine now, but the town was infamous as the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific’ because of drunken lawlessness. In 1840, the then-named Kororāreka became the capital before it was moved to Auckland a year later.

With abundant seafood, the town has top eateries including the iconic Duke of Marlborough and The Gables. Russell is also the base for many water activities and there’s a good choice of walking trails to discover its history and also lovely tracks in nearby Ngaiotonga Forest.

M

any visitors to the Bay of Islands choose Paihia as their base. From where to eat to what to see and do, the town covers all bases. Paihia offers a great dining scene with many outstanding restaurants

and cafés, often showcasing the locally caught catch of the day in their menus. If you’re in need of relaxation, book a massage at one of Paihia’s day spas, or for an insight into Māori culture, check

out a culture show here. There are also a range of fantastic souvenir shops to browse, where you’ll find everything from greenstone carvings to possum fur products. Otherwise, simply wander towards the water and laze on the white-sand beach.

he Bay of Islands is exactly that – a bay full of islands. It therefore makes perfect sense to explore the region by boat. Whether you launch from Ōpua, Paihia, Russell or Kerikeri, you’re bound to discover your own private piece of paradise. Sailing options include half-day, fullday and overnight trips with vessels ranging from 20ft yachts to traditional gaff-rigged schooners. You can also help sail your own vessel. Dive in – you might find your own private cocklefilled bay. Beds of plump scallops await divers, and the fishing is excellent.

BACK ON DRY LAND Enjoy a journey through New Zealand’s earliest settlements on the two-day Twin Coast Cycle Trail – Pou Herenga Tai. For glittering views of a region that’s extremely easy on the eyes, head inland to the Mt Bledisloe Lookout, and for an excellent walking track, drive 5km out of Paihia to the Haruru Falls. From here you can walk to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Waitangi HISTORY IN THE MAKING The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are part of the 506ha Waitangi National Trust Estate. A must-see is the Treaty House, which was built in 1832 for the first British resident James Busby. Across the lawn is the magnificently detailed whare rūnanga, a beautiful meeting house with intricate carvings, which was completed in 1940 to mark the centenary of the treaty.

I

f you want to know more about Māori and European history in New Zealand, this is where you need to start. It was in Waitangi on 6 February 1840 that the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed between Māori and the British Crown. The treaty established British control over New Zealand or governance (kawanatanga), depending on whether you’re reading the English or Māori version. And while neglected for many years, the treaty has played an increasingly

important role in recent times. The 35m waka taua (war canoe), Ngatokimatawhaorua, was built for the centenary of the treaty and a photographic exhibit details how it was fashioned from gigantic kauri logs. The flagpole in the grounds marks the spot where the Crown representatives and Māori chiefs signed the treaty. Admission fees apply for entry to the treaty grounds with a discount for New Zealand residents. Te Kongahu Museum of Waitangi has interactive displays and taonga (treasures) on display.

T

he Far North is a tale of two different coasts. The east is more urbane with deep water harbours, sandy beaches and beautiful islands. The west is soulful and rugged with long stretches of isolated sands and gumdigger relics.

Whangaroa is an area of unspoilt beauty with amazing rock formations and regenerating bush. Known as the Marlin Capital of New Zealand, Whangaroa Harbour is only minutes from good fishing grounds. It’s safe for kayaking and small-boat fishing.

Cape Rēinga lighthouse sits proudly watching the Pacific Ocean collide with the Tasman Sea. The spirits of deceased Māori are said to leap into the waters here to return to their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. The lighthouse salutes the stretch of land curving south to the giant Te Paki sand dunes – great for tobogganing – and Ninety Mile Beach.

At Mātauri Bay, a memorial to the Rainbow Warrior stands on the cliffs looking towards the spot where the Greenpeace vessel was finally scuttled. The protest vessel was blown up in Auckland in 1985 by French government agents trying to thwart the campaign against French nuclear testing in the Pacific. It’s now an excellent dive site packed with marine life.

Doubtless Bay Sweeping in a gigantic arc, Doubtless Bay is a lengthy bay with shady pōhutukawa trees, stunning beaches and rugged, rocky bays – an idyllic holiday destination. Mangōnui is the first township in the bay heading north and was once a whaling port, but is now notable for its courthouse, historic reserve, dune riding tours and fish and chip restaurant over the water. At Coopers Beach, there’s safe swimming and the pōhutukawa trees provide welcome shade. At Cable Bay, check out the pinkish sand, rock pools and a small lagoon. The wonderfully scenic Karikari Peninsula has a reputation as a go-to place for some R&R.

FAR NORTH’S TOP SPOTS The Far North is known for its abundant fish life but the Houhora coastline is in a world of its own. Not only are the crystalline waters teeming with snapper and kingfish, they’re colossal in size. A fishing charter is a wonderful way to spend the day. Catch yourself a prize fish worthy of boasting about in the pub, or simply enjoy the tales spun by your skipper. Don’t be surprised if your reaction to Whangaroa Harbour is much like a moth around a light; you will be instantly drawn to its beauty. At just 200 metres wide, the narrow entrance opens to reveal a tumbling hillside, hidden bays and slivers of sand. Walk the track up the Duke’s Nose for stunning harbour views, or sail away on a boat for an effortlessly romantic experience.

aitāia is the northernmost town in New Zealand and a good staging point from where you can explore the Aupōuri Peninsula, the sliver of land at the top of the North Island. The town is a good base to enjoy blokarting, fishing, diving and surfing. Visit Te Ahu which houses a museum dedicated to the area’s interesting mix of Māori and

Dalmatian ancestry. See a kauri gumdiggers site at Gumdiggers Park at Awanui. The Ancient Kauri Kingdom nearby is the largest retailer of kauri in the world and has a factory showroom. There are vineyards near Kaitāia too. This is also a good place to shop for gifts from skilled craftspeople working with wood, ceramics, paint, glass, flax, bone and greenstone. inety Mile Beach is actually only 55 miles (88km) long and runs from Ahipara to almost the top of the North Island. Cape Rēinga is nearly the North Island’s most northernmost point. Surville Cliffs are 4km further north, but less accessible. At Cape Rēinga, the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea dramatically merge; there are spectacular views from the lighthouse and several walking tracks for exploring the Cape and Spirits Bay. In Māori legend, Cape Rēinga is where the spirits of the deceased leave the land by sliding down the roots of a lone pōhutukawa tree – slipping into the sea and continuing their journey to their ancestral home of Hawaiki. Spirits Bay can be accessed by gravel road and it’s worth the detour for the fantastic views. Head south to discover shipwrecks, giant sand dunes, gumdigger remnants and quiet beaches.

T

his is a rugged beach town at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach. Ahipara is famous for its towering sand dunes, amazing sunsets and one of the best left-hand surf breaks in the world.

Shipwreck Bay was aptly named because many ships foundered off the coast here. Walk along the foreshore above the bay and discover gumdigging relics at Ahipara Gumfields Historic Reserve. There’s an 18-hole golf course running parallel to Ninety Mile Beach affording stunning views while you enjoy a round of golf. Relax and enjoy the scenery or take a beach safari, quad bike ride, go surfcasting or dig your toes in the sand and see tuatua shellfish pop up ready for eating.

Explore HOKIANGA

Couple by the Hokianga Wharf © David Kirkland

M

ore than 1000 years ago, Kupe and his people were the first to arrive in New Zealand, landing at beautiful Hokianga Harbour. This area is steeped in European history too: the first Catholic mass was held at Motuti in 1838. Along the waterfront are the historic towns of Ōpononi, Ōmāpere, Rāwene, Kohukohu and Hōreke. The beautiful twin settlements of Ōmāpere and Ōpononi are famous for the huge sand dunes that dominate the horizon.

After visiting historic Clendon House at lovely Rāwene, catch the car ferry from Rāwene to charming Kohukohu. Visit the Mission House in Hōreke, built for Wesleyan Reverend Nathaniel Turner in 1838 with views over the harbour. Not far from Kaikohe is Ngawha Springs where the rustic thermal pools are soothing and therapeutic. See the Wairere Boulders, some 30m high, formed by a lava flow 2.8 million years ago. They are thought to be the only eroded basalt rocks in the world. Hokianga sand dunes © Getty Images

OPONONI, OMAPERE & HOREKE Laid-back Ōpononi and Ōmāpere are dual settlements on the south shore of the Hokianga Harbour. With a long stretch of white sand and glorious blue water, everyone’s dream of an easygoing lifestyle can be played out here. You’ll need both thighs and nerves of steel to tackle the giant sand dunes that these two settlements are famous for. To reach the dunes, catch a ride with Hokianga Express Charters from

Ōpononi Wharf. Standing at the foot of these golden behemoths is a daunting sight, but watching fearless children flying down the slopes on a body board – laughter resonating as they go – will reassure you it’s not as scary as it looks. Trudging to the top will definitely put some heat in your legs, but once you’ve whizzed down the dunes at an exhilarating speed, nothing will stop you from storming up for another go. It would be

wrong to leave Ōpononi without saying hello to the statue of Opo the dolphin. A resident himself in the 1950s, he liked nothing more than taking the local kids for a ride on his back. Hōreke is a town of firsts. It was one of the first places to be settled by Europeans with a shipbuilding industry established soon after; the Horeke Hotel is one of New Zealand’s first pubs, and the nearby Methodist Mission hosted

the country’s first ever murder trial in 1838. Perhaps most troubling, the Horeke Hotel didn’t initially sell any beer. A short drive down SH 1 leads to Rangiahua, home to tidal marshes thriving with wildlife including wading birds. Hōreke is also on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Ōpua. Stop for a rest at the aforementioned Horeke Hotel, now serving plenty of drinks and fresh food in an idyllic setting.

ravelling through the Kauri Coast/Kaipara District, you’ll pass the many inlets and tributaries of New Zealand’s largest harbour, the Kaipara. The area is renowned for its major kauri industry and shipping. Kaihū played an important part in the Northland’s kauri-logging boom. It was here the trees were logged and sent to Dargaville. Today there is an art and craft gallery dedicated to all things kauri, including furniture. Trounson Kauri Park was named after Edmund Trounson who died helping others in the 1918 flu epidemic. Edmund’s father, James Trounson, made the park a reserve back in 1890. The area is now 586ha and home to rare creatures like kauri snails, bats, weta and brown kiwi. Unfortunately, Kauri Dieback Disease riddles many of our kauri trees, eventually killing them. There is no cure so please clean your gear before and after visiting kauri areas to prevent extinction. MATAKOHE

A

lovely little town set on an estuary at the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour, Matakohe is conveniently placed for exploring the mid-North’s scenic attractions. It lies a short distance from three boat ramps, with several golf courses, great walks and scenic drives nearby. The Kaipara Harbour is famed for its great fishing – drop a line off the wharf to catch your dinner. The town has several bush reserves nearby and two cafés where it’s easy to while away the entire afternoon. The early pioneers set up home at Matakohe and the Matakohe Kauri Museum tells the story of the golden years of kauri logging and gumdigging. Matakohe is also where the country’s first elected New Zealand-born Prime Minister, Joseph Coates, was born. The Coates Memorial Church was built and named in his honour and is now one of the town’s attractions.
