from the cockpit

From Perry to Savannah What an exciting end to November and beginning of December with AgAir Update’s Open House and Hangar Party and the NAAA convention in Savannah! To add to all the excitement was the most blessed weather anyone could have imagined. I want to thank everyone that attended AgAir Update’s party. It was an overwhelming success, as I have been told many times. We must have had over 150 people; since we ordered enough barbecue to feed 160 and it was all eaten. There were seven ag planes in attendance: the Fire Boss, new dual cockpit AT-802, AT-602, AT-502, 510G Thrush dual cockpit, 510G and 510P Thrush. We lined them in front of AgAir Update’s hangar. It was a fantastic site to behold. Besides excellent food, drink and music, everyone that attended added so much to the success of the party. People came from California, Texas, Canada, Louisiana, Brazil, Georgia, Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana; heck, I know I can’t remember all the states. If you missed the party, you missed a grand old time. However, God willing, we will do it again in 2015 when the NAAA convention returns to Savannah. Savannah has proven to be an excellent venue for NAAA’s annual convention. The people there made every effort to go above and beyond to accommodate our group, making me proud of my fellow Southerners. The weather was unbelievable, even for Savannah. Many remember two years ago when it was colder than if the convention had been in Reno. That’s Savannah weather for you, unpredictable. When it is good, it is good and the week of the convention, it was the best; sunshine and 70°F. I was one of the lucky ones who was allowed a ride in the Fire Boss on Sunday before Monday’s demo water scoop on the Savannah River in front of the Savannah Convention Center to launch the convention. Fire Boss pilot, Jesse Weaver, and I made several scoops and drops along the waterway on the backside of the hotel. I’ve flown many different ag planes over the years. The Fire Boss was unlike anything I have flown, or even ridden in for that matter. I must confess, I thought after the first scoop with Jesse showing me how it was done, I could take the rear

seat controls and do it. Nope. Wasn’t going to happen. It will take several training sessions before I feel capable of maneuvering this aircraft to scoop 700-800 gallons of water. There is simply no describing the success of the 46th annual NAAA convention. I was told hotel room nights records were broken and I am sure so was attendance to the event. The auction was a huge success raising $100,000s for the Association. A big thanks go to the contributors. The exhibit hall was overwhelming. There were no less than 12 aircraft on display. My biggest regret was not being able to walk through the exhibit hall. I must have exhibited at no less than 25 NAAA conventions over the years and this was the first time I was not able to visit the booths. I simply could not get out of the AgAir Update booth. At every turn, someone was standing with a question or simply wanted to talk. Hey, that was why I was there. Thanks for coming by the AAU booth! I want to thank those who left comments and likes on the AgAir Update Facebook wall. Facebook has served greatly in allowing AgAir Update to give those who were not at Savannah (and those who did attend) an almost real-time look at the event. I am humbled by the many positive posts. They are appreciated. After a very busy week, I was glad to return home and rest. January and February are busy months for Graham and me. We will attend several trade shows and be on the road more than at home. For any that I missed visiting with in Savannah, I hope to see you at a state trade show. keep turning...

Dear Carlin, It was nice to read your article about Jesus Christ in AgAir Update. It is so nice to see a commercial publication about ag flying have a portion of it used to teach people about Jesus Christ. I commend yours and AgAir Update’s efforts. Thank you, Scott Wick Wicks Aircraft Supply Good morning Scott; Thanks for the email you sent Carlin, who forwarded it to me. Carlin and I have been friends and associates for more years than I can count. He approached me at an NAAA convention over a decade ago and asked if he could write a religious column for AAU. The rest is history. His column is commented on, and favorably, as much as, if not more, than any other column in AgAir Update. I am glad that you enjoy and appreciate it.—Bill

I look forward to AgAir Update every month. As I was reading agair mail in the November issue, I realized the comment on the 1962 G164 was my airplane. When I was a teenager I wanted to be a “cropduster” and cut out the ads of the Merrigold crop duster school, which did not make my mother happy. I had a successful career as an airline pilot instead, but when I flew into Elmyra, New York and looked at the grey and yellow Ag-Cats lined up across the field ready to start their careers, I wondered if I was missing something. I decided to purchase an early model and restore it back to original condition. It took five winters with the help of Agviation, Hershey Flying Service and Merv Lewis to complete the restoration. I flew it for the first time in May and can say it was exciting. My grass strip is only 1300 feet with a hill at the end, so there would be no stopping if something wasn’t working right. Fortunately everything was correct and the flight went well, considering it was the first time I flew an Ag-Cat. I have 12 hours on it now and have decided to sell it (see classified section) hopefully to someone that would install the spray equipment and use it for the purpose it was designed for. Regards, Charlie Leigus Durham, CT

Hello Charles; Small world! Thanks for the compliment. I hope you find a good buyer for the Ag-Cat. AgAir Update is surely the place for that. I have many hours in one of the birds, but that was a long time ago. I am impressed with your first flight from a 1,300-foot strip!—Bill

tribute to Charlie Christmas Charlie Christmas of Shelby, Mississippi passed away the morning of 25 Nov 2012. I worked for Charlie in my early days as an ag pilot during the mid 70s. I learned a lot from him that I have carried with me since, using my learning in not only the ag business, but corporate flying, trucking and life in general. “Be a perfectionist,” he told me. One day on the loading ramp, I can’t remember what I had done, but he told me “Gale Johnson, you are too honest for your own good”. All these years, I’ve regarded that statement as the highest compliment I’ve ever received from any person I’ve worked for. Gale N. Johnson Alba, Texas

hands-on-flying Hello Tracy. I enjoy reading your columns in AgAir Update very much. The recent one about the Garrett Thrush was very relevant, and I just had to make a comment. I did ag flying for 39-years on the Katy, Texas prairie, 19692007. Ninety percent of our flying was rice, along with a few good years of soybean acres. About 65% of our flying on rice was fertilizing, along with some rice planting. I have about 7500 hrs. in Ag-Cats, mostly 600 hp, and 7500 hrs. in PT6 AT-400, 502B, 502A, 602 and 802 airplanes. You are right, every airplane flies different. Of the many 600 hp Ag-Cats I flew, some would turn a little quicker, come off the ground quicker, or whatever. They just handled a little different, but none had any bad characteristics. The two AT-802As I flew were not a “pilot’s airplane” as far as handling was concerned. You could not take your hands off the stick and they required your constant attention. It took me about 30-40 hrs. to feel comfortable. The main thing about the AT-802 that I

Once GPS was perfected, it became a real time saver and helped the accuracy of the application by eliminating the people flaggers. On the 600B Ag-Cat, the new spreading trays would allow us to apply 100 lbs. of urea to the acre on a 55-60+ foot swath. Fertilizing was always my favorite part of the rice flying and this made it better than spraying , except for the extra takeoffs and landings. Your last paragraph sums it up for the older aircraft, “they simply do their job so well.” Keep the articles coming. Have a safe and prosperous season and keep you nose below the horizon. liked, when you pulled up to a 40,000 lb. Kilibrew, you could empty the unit in 8-10 loads using a 75-80 foot swath. This would have been 18-29 loads in the 400 gal. Ag-Cat. The AT-602 was one of the best, well balanced, “pilot loving” airplanes I ever flew. It had the power, carried the load and could handle strong crosswinds. I told Leland Snow that once and he grinned from ear to ear. A friend of mine flew the AT-602 a few days while I was sick and told me it flew very much like a Thrush, which I have never flown. It is hard for me to choose the best technological advancements during my flying years, but I think the turbine engine would be first, gps a close second and the newer spreading trays and spraying equipment in there somewhere. I never had a turbine engine quit me, however I blew seven-eight cylinders on PW 1340s and rode two down into rice fields. That is not counting the mag, carb and spark plug problems.

Chris Trust me when I tell you have I been there, having issues with a computer! Thanks for the subscription. —Bill

Working in the “grid” by Bill Lavender Most ag-pilots are exceptional pilots. This becomes ever so apparent when an ag-pilot has to fly between and under 400-foot tall wind turbines. Although there is ample room to fly amongst these monsters, they are intimidating and a distraction, especially if they are randomly constructed in pastureland. Keeter Aerial Spraying, based at the Olney, Texas municipal airport was introduced to the perils of flying around wind turbines this past year. A “farm” of 90 was installed over an area of about five miles wide and thirty miles long with most of it on pastureland that Keeter Aerial Spraying treats. Another 100 units will be “on the grid” by the spring of 2013, infesting another large area of farmland. Every year, as more wind turbines are installed, ag-pilots are learning that flying around them creates a new set of challenges. Not only are the turning blades flickering in the corner of the pilot’s eye, they are creating turbulence downwind. For those wind farms that Keeter Aerial Spraying has to fly near, it is impossible to create an A-B line with the GPS without at least one wind turbine, and usually more, being in the flight path. The best option a pilot has is rudder skidding past them.

Left to right - James Washburn, “Big” Jerry Schronk and “Little” Jerry Keeter”. James Washburn is the stepson of Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch and has been working from the ground with Keeter Aerial Spraying for four years. “Big” Jerry has flown for Keeter Aerial Spraying for the last ten years. His father, Ed Schronk of Schronk Aerial Spraying, once was a competitor of Keeter Aerial Spraying. “Little” Jerry has been in business in Olney, Texas since 1981.

A-12

agairupdate.com

During turns, a loaded ag-plane struggles to stay high enough to clear the wind turbines further downstream from the application; an ongoing distraction for the pilot while he tries to perform his other duties in the cockpit. The interruption in the A-B line, as well as the wind turbines scattered throughout the application site, increase the application time by 50% - sometimes more. In some cases, Keeter Aerial Spraying has the spinning blades of the wind turbine temporarily turned off. Some of the wind turbines are from 200 to 300 feet high to the hub, with another 100 feet of height added for the radius of the blades (GE Energy 1.5 MW). However, more often than not, these blades are turning. Or worse, there is a technician inspecting a unit that requires the aircraft to depart the field and temporarily cancel the application.

Jerry Keeter flew his first season with an operator near Wichita Falls, TX. Then, in 1982 he formed Keeter Aerial Spraying, flying off of his parents ranch near Olney, Texas. After one year of flying off the ranch, he moved onto the Olney airport, where he has operated for the past thirty years. During Keeter Aerial Spraying’s early years, Jerry operated an Ag-Truck at the “back door” of the Air Tractor factory. Following a casual conversation one day with Leland Snow, it became apparent to Jerry that Keeter Aerial Spraying would be operating Air Tractors in the future. In 1984, Jerry was flying a new AT-301. “We don’t have to wait overnight for a part,” jokes Jerry about being so close to the Air Tractor factory. “However, I buy my aircraft from an Air Tractor dealer.” Another advantage to being on the same airport as the Air Tractor factory is to

easily resolve an aircraft problem by consulting with an Air Tractor employee. It hasn’t always been Air Tractors for Keeter Aerial Spraying, even after the talk with Leland Snow. For a while, Jerry flew a turbine Thrush that came with buying a nearby flying service in 1987. However, two years later, he sold the Thrush and replaced it with a new AT502, in 1996 he traded for a new AT502B and in 1999 added a new AT-402. From 1996 to present, Keeter Aerial Spraying worked boll weevil contracts throughout Texas with the AT-502 and the AT-402, sometimes having to recruit the aid of other aircraft to tackle the big contracts. Jerry kept up with the work in Olney with the AT-502, while the AT402 would work boll weevil. Once Jerry finished up with the work at home he would then travel to the location they were currently treating for boll weevils. With the company growing, it became more difficult for Jerry to keep up while the other aircraft were away. In 2006, he addressed this problem and bought their first AT-602. This worked fine until the following year when it was a wet season and even the AT-602 needed help. That year the AT-602 did over 200,000 acres of just glyphosate work. In 2008, a second AT-602 was added and the AT502 was sold. For the past four years, Keeter Aerial Spraying pilots have traveled to Iowa to spray soybeans and corn. One of the company’s pilots leaves for Iowa in early July with Jerry following in a couple of weeks. That pilot is usually Jerry Schronk, “Big Jerry” the nickname the Iowans gave him. They also call Jerry Keeter, “Little Jerry” to help keep down any confusion with their names. They spend July and August in Iowa before returning to Olney, then leave again for Wyoming in September. Except this year, in Wyoming work was cancelled due to the drought there. This created a one month break before work started in October on winter wheat in Olney. “Bill, we treat a lot of wheat around here. In the last few years, I’ve noticed changes. We used to treat green bugs in the fall, now we are treating spider

mites instead and treating the green bugs in the spring I believe this is due to the insecticide impregnated wheat seed. It controls the green bugs in the fall, but not the spider mites and is played out by spring. You can’t fool mother nature,” analyzes Jerry. Keeter Aerial Spraying sells chemicals to its customers as a package price that includes the application with chemical(s). This eliminates individual customers having left over product and allows for having chemicals conveniently on hand in 250-gallon min-bulk units. Almost all the flying from the home base in Olney is either pastureland or winter wheat. Depending on where the bugs show up, the balance of work could lean more to either crop. There is a mix of field sizes, some can be more than 10,000 acres, but those are the exception. Like many ag-flying services, glyphosate applications are a big part of the work. Glyphosate is applied as a burn down, pre-plant application for wheat and a weed killer on fallow ground. It is also applied on grazing wheat after the cattle are removed in late spring. However, pastureland applications are where most acres are treated. Herbicide applications start in late April for broomweed and ragweeds and ends the first of July. With vast pastureland where only a portion needs an application, especially for mesquite control, Keeter Aerial Spraying uses prescription applications and Surety maps. Applications are made from shape files data that controls an automatic Satloc on/off box. This “magic box” reads the shape file that interfaces with the Hemisphere flow control turning off the spray where not needed and back on where needed. This saves the customer a tremendous amount of money by treating only what is needed. It is too tedious for the pilot to pick out the mesquite and fence lines during the application. The Satloc on/off box does this for him. This technology has also been used on Wyoming grasshopper contracts. Scouts will walk the pastureland and document

“We can go almost anywhere and work any contract with our communications and navigation equipment,” demonstrates Jerry from the cockpit of his AT-602. Here, the panel is outfitted with: PS Engineering audio panel, SL40 Garmin Comm, GT337 Garmin transponder, VHF Motorola comm, UHF Motorola comm and G396 Garmin GPS with XM weather.

GPS waypoints where the grasshopper infestation needs spraying. From this data, shape files are formed and a prescription application is written and sent to Keeter Aerial Spraying. With 30 years of ag-flying from the same airport in the town where he has always lived, creates a book-like rendition of Jerry Keeter and Keeter Aerial Spraying. In that book is his pilot “Big Jerry” Schronk, now a close friend who has flown with “Little Jerry” for over 10 years. The pages reflect the evident changes from flying an Ag-Truck the first couple of years in business within the shadow of the Air Tractor factory, to the transition to four different models of Air Tractors. Now, as pages in the book turn, wind turbines challenge even the best ag-pilot at Keeter Aerial Spraying. There are pages where droughts interfere with anticipated flying away from home. Pages where the latest technologies are used to fly a field. It is a book of adaptation; 30 years of it.

wind turbines According to National Geographic News, researchers in the Midwest are actively exploring the notion that wind turbines may aid in the growth and development of corn and other crops. One way wind turbines could help is by “mixing up the air,” thereby delivering more carbon dioxide to the crops. Another potential way they could aid crops is by making temperatures in the field cooler during the day and warmer at night, which could lead to less frost and less heat stress. The thinking goes that wind turbines aren’t unlike trees planted along the edge of fields in that both buffers “mix up the air and slow wind speeds.” Although those are two potential benefits being considered, researchers acknowledge the true effects are more complicated, meaning wind turbines could help crops in some capacity and be detrimental in other ways. And that doesn’t even take into consideration the possibility farmers could lose the option—and advantage—of aerial application since wind turbines may prevent ag pilots from accessing their fields. —Courtesy NAAA newsletter

Thrush names Yorkton Aircraft as sales representative for Canada Thrush Aircraft has named Yorkton Aircraft, which is a Thrush Authorized Service center, a Thrush sales representative for Canada. Yorkton brings considerable ag experience to the Thrush sales network and will be a key partner in the growing Canadian market. Yorkton is currently in its 24th year successfully supporting the ag industry. Thrush is thrilled to have a Canadian dealer represent Canada operators. Yorkton will continue to provide the same dedicated award winning service to ag operators, but now will have the opportunity to market new Thrushes. Founder of Yorkton Aircraft, Allan Denesowych, was an AME and a commercial ag pilot. He gave up flying ag because he knew he couldn’t be his customers competition. It was the right thing to do and he has taken this philosophy with him as Yorkton Aircraft has grown. Yorkton will oversee the delivery of multiple new Thrushes for operation for this coming spray season, as we hope our neighbors to the north continue to see favorable weather.

A “Poorboy” no more

(L-R) Sam Gray, Ron Moss and Billy Bob Stanley, with Randy Mink in the foreground, before Poorboy’s Flying Service’s 510P Thrush outfitted with a Cascade Pressure Cowling in Bay, Arkansas.

Randy Mink is a poor boy no more. It all began in 1975. Randy secured a summer job loading planes for an operator in Arkansas. By the time 1982 rolled around, Randy’s passion for flying had developed into a full fledged ag flying career. Several years later, Randy bought Ken Brunner’s Craighead County Flying Service and renamed it Poorboy’s Flying Service. Randy was flying an Ag-Truck and lamented ,“We were just poor boys trying to make a living. We used a slab of concrete where my father’s house used to be, which is clear across the road of where we live now in Bay, Arkansas.” That first year, Poorboy’s grossed almost $100,000 charging $2.25 an acre. The second year in business brought a Piper Pawnee Brave to his aircraft arsenal. Later, Randy decided to trade it

for an Ag-Cat which was eventually sold and replaced with an AT-301. In 1988, just three years after forming Poor Boys Flying Service, Randy sold all the round engine parts and the AT-301 and replaced it with an AT-502. As luck would have it, the AT-502’s prop got bogged down in a cotton field, causing upward of $250,000 in damage. Randy sold the AT-502 and replaced it with an AT-402. In 2007, Poorboy’s bought Ronnie Adams’ ag operation. Randy sold the AT-402 that came with the business and replaced it with a new AT-502B. Ronnie still flies for Poorboys in the AT-502. Billy Bob Stanley, Randy Mink’s nephew started loading for Poorboy’s over 28 years ago. He graduated to an ag seat after eight years on the ground. Fast forward to 2012. Poorboy’s Flying Service currently operates a 2008 550 Thrush with a PT6A-60, a 2012 510P Thrush with a PT6A-34 and Cascade Pressure Cowling and a 2009 AT-502B. Randy has owned seven Thrushes and five Air Tractors during 38 years of ag flying.

flies the 510P, working it at 150 MPH using 52 PSI torque at 2,000 RPM burning about 52 GPH. Poorboy’s Flying Service operates from four airstrips in three adjacent counties. Their main airstrip has 1800’ of concrete with a 600’ overrun; the other strips are half-mile sod. According to Randy, the Thrushes have no problems working from any of his strips. Also, Poorboy’s has a 70’ x 18’ Schweiss Bi-Fold door, hydraulically operated and outfitted to an 80’ x 120’ hangar built a year and half ago. The original hangar burnt from a battery charger outlet plug going bad.

The 2012 510P was purchased from Mid-Continent Aircraft Sales and Service in Hayti, Missouri where a Cascade Pressure Cowling was installed. Randy claims with the Cascade Pressure Cowling, the -34 burns fuel like a -15 and has more power at higher OATs. MidContinent also installed a Load Hawg, Hemisphere M3 with flow control, bottom fuel loader and VGs. Billy Bob

In Randy’s spare time he likes to build loader trucks to use in the business, but people hear about them and buy them. Randy finds himself keeping an extra one or two around for those calls. Usually, he makes up the trucks from used a rental truck chassis, like U-Haul units, using mild steel for the hopper and auger. Poorboy’s flies 11 months out of the year. Years ago, it had close to 130

farmer customers. Now, that number is down about half with 65 customers. Before, there were 400 to 500-acre farms, now the typical farm is 1,500 acres and more. “We get the work done for them, because they can’t get it done on time,” says Randy. Work starts with glyphosate burndown applications for rice in February. There are some rice seeding applications going on, as well. Also, wheat will get 46% urea fertilizer applications with typical rates of 100 pounds per acre. Sometimes an additional 50 pounds per acre of sulfate is added. Main crops treated are rice and corn, with corn applications on the rise. Poorboy’s rarely treats cotton any longer. Corn fertilizing is at 100 pounds of urea per acre when it is waist high. During tasseling, fungicide applications are made. For the second season in a row, nearly all the corn (95%) receives an alfatoxin application. These applications are made at 10 pounds per acre. The season also includes fertilizing rice at typical rates and times of the year for Arkansas. “Poorboy’s” is a misnomer. What started out 38 years ago as a summertime job with Randy Mink loading ag planes has turned into a successful Arkansas operation. Not a lot of “fluff”, just a good old Poorboy’s attitude to get the job done right.

H75 and H85 turboprop engines receive EASA engine certifications EVENDALE, OH—GE Aviation’s new H75 and H85 turboprop engines received engine type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The two new engines are derivatives of the H80 engine. The China Aviation Industry General

Aircraft Co., Ltd. (CAIGA) selected GE Aviation’s new H85 turboprop engine to power CAIGA’s five-seat Primus 150 business aircraft. This is the first application for the H85 turboprop engine. “GE is proud to certify three new turboprop engines in less than a year,” said Jim Stoker, president and managing executive of GE

Aviation’s Business and General Aviation Turboprops. “The H80 family of engines offers customers a range of horsepower with advanced material and technology, and the engines are generating significant customer interest.” The H75 engine is rated at 750 shaft horsepower (shp) for takeoff and maximum continuous operation, and the H85 engine is rated at 850 shp. Like the H80 engine, the H75 and H85 engines are aimed at the agricultural, commuter, utility and business turboprop aircraft segments. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration type certification of the H75 and H85 is anticipated next year.

Scholarships awarded to two future agricultural pilots In partnership with NAAA, BASF expands commitment to aerial applicators through the agricultural aviation scholarships

is pursuing his commercial pilot’s license. He already has his private license and hopes to begin his agricultural pilot training after completing his current program this winter.

SAVANNAH, GA—Two budding pilots are a step closer to soaring over the fields of America thanks to a pair of scholarships from BASF and the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA).

Foltyn attended Ag Flight Pilot Training LLC in Bainbridge, Georgia, and plans to continue his education later this year with plans to become an aerial applicator.

Justin Mook of Wiggins, Colorado, and Kippy Foltyn of Lansford, North Dakota, were awarded NAAA/ BASF Agricultural Aviation Scholarships of $5,000 and $2,500, respectively and honored during the 46th Annual NAAA Convention and Exposition Kickoff Breakfast in Savannah, Georgia. The scholarships are the product of a partnership between BASF and NAAA, a partnership that aims to build the future of aerial application. “America needs more qualified aerial applicators,” said Gary Fellows, Ph.D., BASF Plant Health Technical Services Manager and member of the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF) Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System, (PAASS) Program Development Committee. “With these scholarships, we’re able to provide people like Justin and Kippy with the opportunity to receive the education they need to enter the field.”

“BASF has been a major supporter of NAAA over the years, and we appreciate their continued generosity,” NAAA Executive Director Andrew Moore said. “The grant that allowed us to establish the agricultural aviation scholarship has helped ensure that the pipeline remains well stocked with competent and capable professional ag pilots.” “Thanks to these scholarships, Justin and Kippy’s dreams are beginning to take flight,” said Fellows, “and the agricultural aviation industry is much better off because of it.”

stewardship

In addition to these programs and partnerships, BASF has helped lead the proliferation of aerial fungicide application beginning with the introduction of Headline® fungicide in the early 2006. Today, BASF offers a number of fungicide products in addition to Headline fungicide that can be applied aerially. That includes Twinline® fungicide and Caramba® fungicide for cereals and Headline AMP® fungicide, a combination fungicide specifically developed for corn growers who want maximum protection from foliar disease, as well as improved Plant Health. New in 2012, BASF also launched Priaxor™ fungicide, a new product powered by Xemium® fungicide, which provides a new mode of action for use on soybean, potato and tomato crops.

BASF continued its support of the NAAA Annual Convention and Exposition as a diamond-level sponsor, which included sponsoring the kick-off breakfast and NAAA scholarships. In addition to sponsoring the yearly event, BASF continues to work with NAAA and NAAREF year-round to keep safety and efficiency top-of-mind for pilots across the U.S. Each year, BASF sponsors a number of NAAREF’s Operation S.A.F.E. (SelfRegulating Application and Flight Efficiency) fly-in workshops, a program that educates pilots to make safe and precise applications.

“Investing in our products is just as important as investing in the professionals who apply them,” said Fellows. “We’re honored to partner with industry leaders like NAAA to help move the industry forward.”

“BASF is committed to the aerial application industry and the Operation S.A.F.E. workshops are just one more way we can help educate pilots and keep them safe in the air,” Fellows said.

insights

Consider these New Year’s resolutions to benefit your industry by Andrew Moore NAAA Executive Director At NAAA, the staff does its best to meet the objectives outlined in Article II of the NAAA Constitution, which include, but are not limited to the Association being the “recognized public policy advocate for the agricultural aviation industry; the primary resource for agricultural aviation knowledge exchange, education and business services … and the public’s professional source of agricultural aviation industry information and education.” The fact of the matter is staff cannot do this alone, nor was it intended that we do it alone, and we certainly do not. NAAA and its sister organization NAAREF have a slew of dedicated volunteers that make these two organizations effective. But there is always room to strengthen our cause. As 2012 President Mark Hartz so aptly stated, “We all need to step up, contribute our time and effort and serve as patriots to the industry.” To be effective “public policy advocates,” staff organizes a PAC fund to contribute to candidates running for federal office and meets with federal officials constantly to make known to them how government policies affect the aerial application industry. However, it takes a whole army of ag aviation operators, pilots and allied members to volunteer their dollars to the AgAv PAC and, more importantly, volunteer their time to write or visit a government agency or congressional office to truly make a difference in influencing policy. As a former congressional staffer I know how important a constituent visiting, writing and calling his or her legislative official is. It can influence a vote, particularly when done en masse.

B-4

agairupdate.com

Reaching out and getting to know your public officials can make all the difference. Let me give two examples. When NAAA was urging the enactment of legislation for an exemption to the federal aviation excise tax on fuels used for farming purposes it was NAAA’s Arkansas members and their close relationship with their U.S. senator at the time, Blanche Lincoln, that made the difference. Lincoln was a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax laws, and moved our legislation through that body. Lincoln had a long relationship with aerial applicators in Arkansas, many of whom flew her across the state when she was campaigning. On the House of Representatives’ side of the Capitol, our legislation was assured of passage once the House Ways and Means Committee Chairman gave it his blessing. The Chairman of that committee at the time was U.S. Representative Bill Thomas of California. NAAA member and aerial applicator Delbert Williams of TriStar Agrinautics in Wasco, Calif., who was one of his constituents, personally visited with his district office in Bakersfield, Calif. These two federal legislators were instrumental in the fuel tax exemption’s enactment, and it was NAAA volunteer members who a profound effect in moving these legislators to act on our behalf. In 2013 we will see many new faces in Congress. We continue to face federal debt, currently at $16 trillion, that threatens our fuel tax exemption and poses the possible levying of user fees at public use airports as a means to raise

federal dollars to combat the debt. We also face growing safety threats from towers, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and other obstacles, in addition to the new burden of NPDES permits and pending drift and bee protection regulations. Being strong politically will be vital for the well-being of our industry as we seek to influence these policies so they take into account our best interests. I would encourage you to do what you can to write letters to federal legislators and regulators when requested via NAAA or state association grassroots alerts. Also, establish a relationship with your local, state and federal policymakers and contribute to their campaigns if they are friends of our industry, and please contribute to NAAA’s AgAv PAC (www.agaviation. org/content/pac-donation-form).

Recruiting an army of ag aviation advocates Effectively being a “primary resource for agricultural aviation knowledge exchange, education, and business services … and the public’s professional source of agricultural aviation industry information and education” is one job. Effectively advocating the content of these resources is quite another. NAAA staff spends a lot of time putting together substantive educational, informational and promotional materials for and about the industry. We also field press calls, speak at public forums and distribute our information to a wide list of media, government, and other public entities and educational outlets. But to permeate the public we need a solid army of advocates.

We develop the original life-saving, stewardship-enhancing educational content for PAASS each year, but it is the platoon of PAASS presenters delivering the material at state association meetings where the material reaches and positively affects the actions of our aerial application troops. The same goes with the substantive information we produce at NAAA such as the new NAAA Media Relations Kit and the Aerial Application Industry Survey. Both contain a wealth of demographic information about the industry and information on the industry’s importance, safety, security and environmental stewardship. If there aren’t industry soldiers taking the substantive content of the Media Relations Kit to the public—whether it be to educators, to schoolchildren, to the local media, to boy and girl scout troops, to local government officials at town hall meetings, etc.—our industry’s reach won’t be nearly as extensive if just left to the NAAA Board, our staff of seven and state associations. Let’s face it, President Obama didn’t win the presidency by going at it alone. He had active troops in every state in the union, in every county in each state

and in every township in every county advocating a message that effectively delivered to him, like it or not, the most powerful position in the world. Effectively advocating professional aerial application as an invaluable tool resulting in the safe and affordable production of food, fiber, and biofuel, and forestry and public health protection works exactly the same way. Many troops spread throughout the country are needed. At NAAA, the Board and staff promise to deliver materials and to deliver advocacy, but we need your help. You can start by becoming an NAAA member if you aren’t one already. To join, call 202-546-5722, visit www. agaviation.org/content/membership or complete the membership application in any issue of Agricultural Aviation magazine. Make a New Year’s resolution to benefit this great industry of ours. Suggestions on how you can be an agricultural aviation patriot are offered below.

Compare aircraft costs using NPV When you consider a change in aircraft usage or aircraft ownership, you should evaluate the total cost method for using the aircraft as well as how a specific aircraft “A” compares to aircraft “B”. Do you own, lease, or contract for the usage of the aircraft? How does the costs of using aircraft “A” compare to aircraft “B”? Which usage methods and aircraft is the better deal from a financial viewpoint?

Please notice that no qualifiers have been placed on the usage method, intended usage, or specific expense category of either aircraft “A” or “B”. It might not even be an apples-toapples comparison. You might already own “A” and want to compare the cost of keeping “A” to trading it for “B”. You might be comparing leasing, owning or contracting aircraft usage of several different aircraft models. Your interest is strictly financial. From a big picture standpoint, aircraft “A” and “B” could be investment “A” and “B”. Which investment is the better deal from a financial viewpoint? How do you make this financial comparison and answer this question? Please notice that the features and benefits of the aircraft usage methods or aircraft types is a totally different question that you should

also be evaluating. This paper only discusses the financial consequences of an investment. Please realize the importance of addressing these concerns today due to our current economic situation. Start planning now to determine the best financial decisions for your situation. When Congress passes the new tax laws, you can further evaluate your financial plan. Using NPV to evaluate your financial alternatives and specific aircraft models could save you significant money. If you aren’t familiar with NPV, do a little homework now so you have time to study and understand the impact NPV can have on any of your financial decisions.

What is NPV? Use Net Present Value (NPV) to evaluate and compare any situation “A” and “B” financially. First, your rocket-science hat is not required to understand this concept. Please be patient and read carefully as only your common sense is required. When money is spent today that produces a cash flow (receipts or distributions) in the future, you can use NPV to calculate the value of this cash flow in today’s dollars. All investment decisions center on calculating today's value of a future cash flow. This is more complicated than the simple addition and subtraction of the cash receipts because a dollar today is worth more than a future dollar. You must consider the time value of money. Performing a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis will provide you an answer on the current dollar value of your investment. You can use before or after tax cash flows to calculate today’s dollar value on any

investment. Using after-tax cash flows provides the advantage of considering all tax benefits in your investment decision. The Net Present Value (NPV) is a single dollar value that is calculated from a cash flow over a period of time which has been adjusted for the time value of money. The NPV of an investment is the difference between the sums of the cash flows (adjusted for the time value of money) produced by the investment less the amount initially invested. To adjust the cash flows to reflect the time value of money requires that each cash flow value must be adjusted for the time it was received (or disbursed) and the interest rate used to calculate the present dollar value. The interest rate used in the calculation is known as the discount rate. The discount rate used is usually your

B-10

agairupdate.com

current cost of borrowing or the percentage return you could achieve with a safe investment. The single dollar value of the total adjusted cash flow not including the initial investment is known as the Present Value (PV). Therefore: Net Present Value (NPV) = Present Value (PV) less Initial Investment. As an example, assume $100,000 is the initial investment in an aircraft. This aircraft investment produces a cash flow of $25,000 a year for five years. The total cash flow received over the fiveyear period is $125,000. The aircraft is sold at the end of Year 5 for $70,000. Assume an interest rate (discount rate) of 10%. The adjusted cash flow for the time the payment was received

(assumed here to be at the end of each year) and the 10% interest rate produces a Present Value (PV) of $138,234. See “Net Present Value Example” table and “HOW TO COMPUTE NPV” section below. The actual financial PV formula was used to calculate the “Adjustment Factor” in the table. However, it is much easier to use a financial calculator that contains the NPV function. NPV = $38,234 = $138,234 (PV) less $100,000 (Initial Aircraft Investment) By definition; if the NPV=0, then the investment return is equal to the discount rate. If the NPV is greater than zero then the investment return has exceeded the discount rate. If the NPV is less than zero then the investment return is less than the discount rate. In this example, the NPV is a positive $38,324. If you make this initial investment of $100,000, you will earn $38,324 more than 10%. A discount rate of 21.05% will produce a NPV=Zero, which means the investment return was 21.05%.

How do you compute NPV? Use a financial calculator or use the NPV financial function in Microsoft Excel to make the calculation. NOTE: Excel's language about discounted cash flows differs from the standard finance nomenclature. Excel uses the letters NPV to denote

the Present Value (not the Net Present Value) of a cash flow. To calculate the finance Net Present Value of an investment using Excel, calculate the Present Value using the Excel NPV financial function then subtract the amount of the initial investment. For your information, the IRR financial function in Microsoft Excel was used to calculate the investment return of 21.05% noted above. The AircraftCostAnalysis program can be used to produce NPV analysis for any type aircraft, ownership method, lease or purchase, rent or contract situation. Do the math before you invest. Bola en el centro “Mantener su bola en el centro” - that’s spanish for “keep your ball in the center.” I have a lot of turbine transition students from all over Latin America and this is a phrase that I use incessantly. I cannot stress enough the importance of ag flying with the ball in the center of the “balance ball” window. Aside from being safe, your efficiency is much greater and the pilot is much less fatigued after 8-10 hours in the cockpit; you can

multiply the fatigue factor by ten if you do not have an air conditioner. Recently, I had a young man go through my turbine transition course who had been flying a C-188 Ag-Truck for the past several years. When we would pull out of the field and begin the primary turn downwind, he would apply way too much downwing rudder, slamming the ball to the other side. Correcting him in the air did not help very much. It was easy to tell sitting in the back seat that he was very erratic on the rudders. When we returned to the base, he explained to me that his Cessna did not even have a balance ball and he was always told to step on the

down-wing rudder. Well, that is correct, sortof. Too much rudder could result in a crosscontrol accelerated stall if you are already at a slow airspeed, in a steep turn, and the nose pitched up. That would really ruin your day!

because he did have the presence of mind to step on a rudder to roll the airplane rightside-up an instant before it slammed into the ground. The airplane did not slide 10’ following impact.

An inadvertent accelerated stall occurs very quickly with little or no warning and in the extreme, the airplane can roll inverted unless an instant, correct reaction is initiated. I have seen the results of an “inadvertent accelerated stall” and it isn’t very pretty. Fortunately, this pilot survived, though seriously injured,

I have lightly touched on this subject in a previous In My Opinion column, but after flying with the student mentioned earlier, it was my opinion that I needed to touch on it again.

ASC-A10 Rotary Atomizers make lower volume applications possible by Graham Parker Because of the superior coverage rotary atomizers produce, lowering application rates becomes possible. Much work has been done to evaluate the results of lower rate applications. As well as better control there is the obvious advantage of increased productivity. Excellent results can even be achieved by using Microlight aircraft. Because of their relatively low operating speeds and limited payload it is difficult to justify the use of these craft, however for small areas, and with the excellent droplet spectrum that rotary atomizers produce, the Microlight becomes a very useful tool. In most cases, it is just not possible to use a conventional nozzle system for lower rates and high volumes need to be applied in order to achieve adequate coverage. Rotary atomizers do not need high pump pressure to achieve droplet uniformity and therefore, because of the excellent droplet spectrum, lower application rates can be used. The only adjustment needed to operate the ASC-A10 atomizers on slow flying aircraft and helicopters is a change of fan blades to longer ones. Another advantage over conventional nozzles is an increased swath width giving a greater work-rate.

Volare DC™ provides aerial applicators with a tool to optimize droplet size WAUKEGAN, IL—Aerial applicators now have an on-target solution when delivering timely and more precise applications of crop protection products. Precision Laboratories, a leading provider of specialized chemistries, recently introduced Volare DC™, a new adjuvant technology for aerial applicators. Volare DC, briefly known as Avianis DC, delivers improved drift control, deposition and coverage when applied through aerial application equipment. Unlike ordinary drift retardants designed for ground application, Volare DC optimizes droplet size and deposition by “right-sizing” spray droplets to resist wind stream shear that ruptures oversized droplets formed from ordinary drift retardants.

“Aerial applicators are under ever increasing pressure to cover more acres while delivering timely and ontarget applications of crop protection products,” said Jim Reiss, vice president of Agricultural Chemistries at Precision Laboratories. “Oversized spray droplets can break apart at application speeds above 125 mph, creating smaller droplets that are more susceptible to drift. Volare DC is specifically designed for aerial applicators to optimize droplet size and resist breakup at high speeds.” Recent research shows a distinct difference between ground and aerial applications, where ordinary drift retardants can be ineffective for the aerial market. In 2011, Volare DC was validated through research performed at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Services (ARS) Aerial Application Technology high speed wind tunnel. It reduced drift by over 30%

We factored your neighbor’s crop value into the chemistry. Right-sized droplets resist wind sheer for less risk of drift. Unlike ordinary drift retardants that were designed for ground application, Volare DC™ eliminates super-sized droplets that rupture from wind shear and micro particles that hang in the air. Instead, Volare DC creates “right-sized” droplets that drop to the crop and stay there. It’s an added dose of confidence and one less thing for you, and your neighbors, to worry about.

Precision Laboratories launches Volare DC™, a new adjuvant technology for aerial applicators At NAAA, Precision Laboratories launched Volare DC™, a new adjuvant technology for aerial applicators that delivers improved drift control, deposition and coverage when applied through aerial application equipment. "We factored your neighbor's crop into the chemistry," said Jim Reiss, vice president of Agricultural Chemistries at Precision Laboratories. "As part of our launch at NAAA, we are signing up aerial applicators for our Good Neighbors Giveaway Sweepstakes. Aerial applicators are good neighbors when they minimize drift with an on-target application." One grand prize winner of the Good Neighbors Giveaway Sweepstakes will receive a Charbroil® grill, Yeti® cooler, set of grill utensils and an Omaha Steaks® gift card. A random drawing will take place from all eligible entries received at NAAA. Unlike drift retardants designed for ground application, Volare DC optimizes droplet size and deposition by "right-sizing" spray droplets to resist wind stream shear that ruptures oversized droplets formed from ordinary drift retardants.

MIKE’S AIRCRAFT SHOP, INC.

"The concept of Volare DC was born through conversations with university researchers looking for more effective drift control than traditional drift retardants," added Reiss. In 2011, Volare DC was validated through research performed at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Services (ARS) Aerial Application Technology high speed wind tunnel. It reduced drift by over 30% compared to alternatives and provided superior compatibility at a low-use rate. "We really enjoy coming to the NAAA Convention and we are proud to be affiliated with aerial applicators," said Reiss. "They are a great group of professionals who have done so much for this industry. It's a great opportunity to have face-to-face conversations and to learn how we can help deliver products that solve their needs." For more information on Volare DC, log on to precisionlab.com.

They like nothing better than to see their local operators at each other’s throats. They know that the operator will do just about anything they ask, anytime, anywhere and for less money, if it means a chance at one upping their competitor. I think most of us have seen this game played as fine as any fiddle at one time or another. I’ve seen PCAs change their tunes quicker than it takes to walk through the door. Down talking the other guy depending on which office they are standing in, while the operator gleefully basks in the false light of the PCA’s temporary praise. Temporary, because as soon as he leaves the PCA will only grin at himself in the knowledge that he once again pulled the wool over the “dumb crop duster”, stirring the pot to get a better price and snap-of-the-fingers service. The operator will think he won another round against his arch enemy down the road. He more than likely screwed himself as much as the other guy. He certainly did no favors for the ag aviation industry. It’s a vicious circle. Every action requires an equal and opposite re-action; and so the cycle continues, unnecessarily increasing

the burden on our own, while the customer lights a cigar, puts his feet up and watches the show. It’s manipulation, plain and simple. It’s easy to do when your opponent is put off balance by emotional distraction.

every operator still conducts his business in a manner that best suits him. Trusting your neighbor doesn’t mean you shouldn’t brand your cows. On the other hand I’ve been to places where the well has been poisoned. Grudges and feuds going on to a point that the customer holds the operators by the nose and can make either one jump and dance on a whim. And they do it; just because they can.

I understand that any business has to court accounts and instill confidence in customers, but how far should you go? We provide a necessary service. One that the agricultural industry needs and wants. Sure, when a grower trusts us with the defense of his crops, we should take on that responsibility gratefully. However, we should also have the authority and clarity to conduct our business in a manner that is most efficient and profitable for us. Leave the “getting even” games on the playground.

Pilots are the range riders of any operation and many hold a fierce loyalty to their employers; “Riding for the brand”, as Louis L’amour would call it. A pilot will and should conduct himself in a manner that brings credit to the name of the operation that is embroidered on his hat. Just like in the wild west, some pilots take on the boss’ grudges, perhaps to prove their loyalty, or to endear themselves to the management. That’s not where an ag pilot’s head should be and flying erratically or aggressively at and around another aircraft is down right stupid. Let the boss grind his own ax. Loyalty don’t mean much when you’re in intensive care, or in jail, or six feet in the ground. Don’t be gullible enough to undo yourself or another pilot because you think you have to prove something.

I’ve seen places where operators work together inasmuch as they communicate and confer with each other. They compare prices, not all being the same but all within a comfortable margin, to give the customer a fair deal and the operator a decent expectation of profit. They discuss policies and procedures. Again, not all the same but maintaining a level of professional stature that ensures good service but does not subjugate themselves to the customer. It works very well and keeps everyone happy. An old time operator once told me, “If a customer is basing his work off the bottom line, then bottom line service is all he should expect.” Everyone gets along, checks and balances exist in the professionalism and reputations of those involved. GPS goes autopilot by Bill Lavender MONTICELLO, LA — Just when you think nothing more revolutionary than GPS can come along in the ag aviation industry, an ag pilot, which is generally the case, has another great idea. Would you believe an autopilot coupled to a GPS unit? Sound impossible? Wonder why anyone would dare trust an autopilot at 140 mph, five feet off the ground? Stop for a moment and think. Then allow me to elaborate.

Back to our GPS coupled with an autopilot. How much easier do you believe flying the lightbar would be if you had a device that would assist/control yaw while traveling across the field. Consider an autopilot that would track the center light of your lightbar simply with rudder inputs. If you, as the pilot, can direct that aircraft within ten feet of the center light’s depicted line of travel, all the aircraft would need is small rudder inputs to track on-line. The pilot would control the aircraft’s altitude and roll.

First of all, it is a super idea; providing you take the idea in context. We’re not talking about a full three axis autopilot coupled to the GPS, that might be a little too much. However, at this very moment there is research to that very tune. Maybe I’ll be able to bring you that article before year’s end. And, it’s not related to this article in any fashion.

Not a bad concept, hey? Well, I’m proud to say I was the second person in this small world of ours to “test” fly such a device, second to the inventor, Bruce Rye who is president of Aviation Guidance Technologies, Inc. in Oak Grove, Louisiana. I’ve told you I had a great job! And, for you doubting Thomas’s, the autopilot works!

Bruce Rye is a pilot for Monticello Flying Service, which is owned by his brother Steve Rye, Mike Lingo and Adam Plunkett. Adam flies the company’s AT-502 and Bruce flies the AT-401. The autopilot system, which will be sold and marketed under the trade name TrueTrackTM is installed in the AT-401. Monticello Flying Service operates in the northeastern part of Louisiana. About 25% of their work is treating rice, another 60% is cotton and the rest is corn and soybeans. The company was bought three years ago from James Ruffin. Before Monticello Flying Service, the Rye brothers flew their farm acreage, still taking care of a 1,000 acres of the rich Louisiana soil. Bruce left the farm slightly over ten years ago to pursue a career in the computer and electronic publishing business. (We had more than just airplanes to talk about.) However, he decided to return to the family business and go back to flying ag. When Bruce left in the '80s he was flying a Pawnee and marking fields with human flaggers. When he returned to ag flying in 1995 the company was using Air Tractors and SATLOC GPS units. It was a brand new world for him. For Bruce, like anyone else who first starts out with a GPS in an ag plane, the first 100 hours can be frustrating. He had to contend with the adjustment of not flying ag for ten years, as well as adapting to a higher performance aircraft. During this frustration he told himself, there must be a better way to flag fields.

Because of his frustration, he developed an idea that utilized his electronic knowledge and flying experience to invent the first autopilot guided GPS. The work on Bruce’s invention began in June of 1995. It became a personal project. He would fly during the day and whenever he had a spare moment, he’d tinker on the autopilot GPS. He decided all that was needed and all that would ever pass FAA scrutiny would be a unit that would assist yaw via the rudder. Bruce Rye stands by the With this in mind, Bruce had TrueTrack TM autopilot an electrically driven servo mounted in an AT-401B. built, which mounts in the rear fuselage of the AT-401. He then bridled the servo’s cables to the rudder cables. From there, he contracted with a control systems engineer, Dr. William Pratt Mountfield, Jr. of M & M Technologies, Inc., to design the computer hardware and write the software programs that make up the digital controller of the autopilot. The digital controller chip mathematically analyzes the lightbar info stream telling the servo how much and when to actuate the rudder cables.

An annunciator panel mounted on the instrument panel has a lamp that flashes when the system is processing valid data. There is also a trim control thumb wheel that allows the pilot to trim the rudder for different airspeeds and loads. An on-off push button is mounted in the control stick. The pilot activates the unit after he is lined-up with his intended swath and deactivates the unit before pulling up and out of the field. Simple. After a brief explanation and some picture taking, Bruce invited me to fly the AT-401. Let me say, I am not proficient with a GPS. I can operate one, but I don’t consider myself an artist at staying on track. Bruce explained to me that I could easily override the system and demonstrated this to me by activating the unit and having me press the rudder pedals. The rudder is a little stiff when overriding the autopilot, but nothing that could be considered a safety problem.

fly their lightbar set his way. I’d like to meet them. Bruce had the first outboard light set for four inches (that’s not a typo). The next light was set for nine inches with a full deflection indicating seven feet off line! When I made my third pass, using a wide turn, I waited until I was within 10-15 feet of center line keying off the LED numbers. Once I was within 15 feet, I activated the autopilot. The unit began feeding in corrections. After several passes I found that if my intercept angle was too great the aircraft would overshoot and the unit would be constantly feeding back and forth across the center line with less and less overshoot each time until it finally lined up. However, with a small intercept angle the unit would track to the center line, making it possible for a low-time GPS pilot to be proficient.

Bruce further explained to me that I would want to rig the rudder trim on the way to the field by activating the unit, adjust the trim control thumb wheel for a center ball, then switch the unit off. With a few more instructions, I fired off the R-1340, warmed her up and headed out. At the field I set the A-B line. The SATLOC unit was set up for left-hand racetrack. On the second pass I set the C-line, then activated the autopilot. The unit held a good, straight track.

How safe is this wonder machine. I can’t see any problems, safety wise. What about spikes, the unit failing, or the unit exerting a full deflection. I’m sure those are legitimate concerns. But, I don’t see how any can be much of one. The maximum rudder deflection is 2.5 inches at the trailing edge of the rudder with the autopilot engaged. During my flight, I exited the field, didn’t turn off the unit and made the turn with no problem. You could even finish an application with a failed unit that had a full locked rudder deflection by overriding the unit with rudder pressure.

It should be noted that Bruce had the lightbar lights set just a little tight for me. I am sure there are “some” ag pilots that could

The unit is not a negative safety issue. A maximum spike from the GPS would incur a 2.5 inch trailing edge rudder movement that

has no more impact on the aircraft than a gust of wind. It might not be wise to fly the aircraft in close proximity of obstacles with your feet on the floor. Otherwise, it would be no problem to let your feet rest on the floor in an open field. Is that safe enough? Sounds to good to be true. There are many good points about the unit, and there are a few problems that will be resolved. One problem initially was the lag between the aircraft’s actual position and the position the GPS calculated. Bruce tells me that since the time I test flew the autopilot changes have been made to the control algorithms to compensate for this delay. If not compensated for, at 140 mph it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out the unit could end up chasing itself, especially with a green pilot or in a crosswind. I had a 10 knot, 90° crosswind and was a green GPS pilot. (I hate using the word “green” pilot for describing myself.) Even so, under these conditions the unit was able to hold the center line within 6-8 feet. Bruce explained to me that with the new algorithms, the unit is capable of staying within four feet of the center line, better than most pilots. Makes mathematical sense to me. The good points are many. It is one of those products that sound good in a discussion, but when in actual use the light bulb really comes on. I believe safety is the most prominent feature. The overall relief of pressure and stress from continuous monitoring of the lightbar will be reduced with the GPS autopilot. Along with not having to constantly “walk” the rudder pedals, the GPS autopilot will make GPS ag flying much safer and easier.

The TrueTrackTM autopilot is mounted in the rear bulkhead of the aircraft and the actuating cables are bridled to the rudder cables (upper photo).

The pilot’s accuracy will vastly improve. I know there are those pilots who can peg the center light the majority of the time. However, I don’t think even the best ag pilot can consistently peg the center light after 10 grueling hours in the cockpit. The autopilot GPS can. Then there is the rudder trim. I’ve always adjusted the rudder trim tab on aircraft I fly to rig the aircraft in the loaded configuration. Then upon return to the base, empty, I would have to stand on the rudder to keep the aircraft coordinated. Not only is this aggravating, but it is tiring as well. With the TrueTrackTM autopilot, the pilot can set his rudder trim in any load configuration. With the autopilot GPS, the pilot can literally fly the aircraft with his feet on the floor, whether going to the field, across it, or back to the strip. I understand that tracking a GPS can be a real art when working forestry, or for applications that are considerably higher than row crops. With the TrueTrackTM autopilot, these problems would be minimized. Anywhere a pilot has minimal reference, like crossing a rice field, the TrueTrackTM autopilot will be an asset. And, I’m sure there are a number of ideas and uses that I haven’t thought of that can justify this product. At least the cost is acceptable, at $4,995 per unit and less than a day of down time for installation. Bruce is very close to receiving the STC for the Air Tractor AT-401 and AT-502. A separate STC will have to be issued for each aircraft manufacturer and some cases different models of ag aircraft. The STC that Bruce is presently working

on will apply to several different models of GPS, including the SATLOC AirStar, SATLOC ForestStar, Basic WAG Flagger, WAG Flagger I and WAG Flagger II. Other models of GPS units will be adapted to if demand for them is adequate. If projections go as planned, the unit will be available to the ag aviation market in the summer of 1996. As with any new product there are production limitations within a finite market. If you think a yaw autopilot is a viable option for your GPS unit you may want to get your name in the pot. I predict this will be the hot item in ag aviation for 1996. I would suggest you give Bruce Rye a call at 318-428-7999 and express your interest and needs. I loved the unit and believe, without a doubt, it is an asset for our industry. Editor's Note: Seventeen years was a long time ago and is apparent from this article. I made a few predictions that obviously did not come true. However, it was in the mid-1990s and GPS was just starting to become popular with ag-pilots. On the following page, you will read a 2012 survey about the topic I wrote about 17 years ago. The results are interesting, as are the comments. I wonder if the comments would be the same after reading the article? Unfortunately, Bruce Rye was killed in his AT-401 shortly after this article was published. No, he was not killed flying his autopilot invention. He was killed pushing the envelope at the home strip, completely unrelated to the autopilot. -Bill Lavender

Would you use a yaw damper style autopilot interfaced with your GPS and rudders? This would be one of the most dangerous things to be installed on the ag aircraft. Preparing yourself and your family for the New Year The Apostle Paul wrote, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13b).

God’s got some exciting things in store for each of us as He continues to expand His Church through the work of His Holy Spirit in this New Year of 2013. I’m looking forward in anticipation of what God is going to do for us in this coming year. Every one of us need to prepare ourselves spiritually if we are going to succeed this year in this sinful world that we live in. The apostle Peter wrote, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). To win this spiritual battle

It takes an act of God to open the ears and eyes of a person to the spiritual world around us, but if our minds are constantly on earthly and material things, God will not open our minds to the spiritual world; He will not violate our free will. One of the problems within Christianity today is that we have become so involved in our material world that we have lost our spiritual insight. The cares of this life, the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for material things have choked out the desire to see and hear the spiritual dimension. We don’t think

or talk much about heaven anymore, we are afraid of someone saying, “He is so heavenly minded that he is no earthly good.” But I would rather be so heavenly minded that I’m no earthly good, than be so earthly minded that I’m no heavenly good, which is the condition of much of Christianity today. Paul said, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). How you live your life on a daily basis will demonstrate more about your spiritual life than the words you speak.

How you live your life on a daily basis will demonstrate more about your spiritual life than the words you speak. Jeremiah was one of God’s prophets during a difficult time in Israel’s history, he suffered rejection and persecution. Yet God’s Word produced deep joy in his heart. In a vivid statement, he said to God, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). If we will make God’s Word a part of our daily life through reading, study, meditation and memorization, it will make a difference in our spiritual life. A New Year’s resolution to read God’s Word as often as possible is a good resolution to make and try to live up to. Not to put yourself on a legalistic trip; if we miss a day we start again the next day—it’s a good

each morning will make an imprint on your mind that can make a lasting impression on your life. “I have God’s Word in my mind so I will not sin against Him…God’s Word gives wisdom, knowledge, and understanding” (Psalm 119:11, Proverbs 2:6). God bless you this New Year.

The apostle Paul wrote, “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4). In Ephesians 6:10-20 Paul tells us that the only offensive spiritual weapons we have are the Word of God and prayer. All the rest are defensive weapons and there is no protection for the back. As Christians, we never turn and run, but always go forward! Let’s make a commitment to pray for the NAAA leaders, state leaders and their staff. Pray for our Nation’s AgAir Update | Junior Page | 7.08”w x 9.14”h leaders and ask the Lord to protect them and give them the wisdom to do what is best for our industry and country. God has given each of us 365 days, 6 hours, 56 minutes and 9 and 54/100 seconds each year of our life to serve Him. How we use this valuable time is up to us; we can use it for the good of all mankind, or we can selfishly use it for our self. It’s your choice. Paul wrote, “That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10). The Bible is a complete book of letters from God. I love the encouraging words, the good thoughts and the wisdom that comes from reading the Bible. As we read the Bible we can hear God whisper words of love and encouragement into our minds—an uplifting way to start and end each day. “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul” (Psalm 143:8). Goddirected resolutions are new commitments to change and to improve our Christian walk during the next year, and the rest of our lives. Reading the Bible

A tribute to Charlie Christmas Noah Charles Christmas, 80, of Shelby, Mississippi, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012. He was born in Campbellton, Florida on May 23, 1932. December 22, 1950 he married Miriam White in Dothan, Alabama. He served in the United States Army by fighting in the Korean War and returned to Dothan where he earned his pilot license in 1953. He moved to the Mississippi Delta in 1958 and flew for Curtis Pitts and Booga-Bottom. In 1961, he formed Christmas Flying Service. Mr. Christmas was a strong supporter of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association (Lifetime member) and the National Agricultural Aviation Association. He served as president of the MsAAA in 1976 and 1985. He was a Mississippi director of NAAA. —Information from Ray Funeral Home

From the Charlie Christmas (1932-2012) funeral service When this life is done, and at the gates I stand, My hope is that I answer all the questions on command. I doubt I’ll be asked of my fame or all the things I knew, Instead, did I witness the rainbows on rainy days I flew. The hours logged, the status reached, the ratings will not matter. Did I notice the sun’s rays on the lakes that scattered? Or what about the droplet clear that spread across my screen? How fast, how far, how much, how high? I won’t be asked these things. But did I take the time to watch the moonbeams wash my wings? And did I see the patchwork fields and the mirrored lakes below? Or the mountains high and velvet hills? Of these did I behold? And when the goals are reached at last, when all the flying’s done, I’ll answer with no regret—Indeed! I had some fun. So, when these things are asked of me, and I can reach no higher, My prayer this day with hands extended, please welcome home this flyer. —Unknown

reducing adjuvant chemicals used for aerial or groundboom applications to row and field crops. The voluntary information collection program would encourage the identification and use of drift-reduction technologies that can substantially reduce drift of pesticide spray droplets from the target application site (e.g., a corn field) downwind to nontarget areas. Exposures and adverse effects to humans, wildlife, crops and other vegetation from pesticide spray drift are well recognized.

Air Tractor Ram Air Inlet meeting ag operators’ expectations OLNEY, Texas–After two years of use in the field in more than 300 aircraft working around the world, Air Tractor’s ram air inlet is meeting with positive overall response among ag operators, according to Kyle Schroeder, Air Tractor engineer on the project. The ram air nose configuration and filtration system became standard equipment on all Air Tractor aircraft in 2011 following its introduction at the NAAA Convention in December 2010. Manufactured by Brackett Aero Filters, of Kingman, Arizona, the 3-stage foam air filter system utilizes a permanently mounted filter frame and features a disposable filter element with an improved “Double P” side-seal design. “We set our performance standards high for this new filtration system,” said Schroeder, “and the feedback from

operators tells us that it has met them every step of the way.” A stainless-steel filter frame and perforated backer holds the filter system in place. The “Double P” design allows the filter elements to expand to fill any gaps around the edges of the frame to block contaminants from entering from the edges of the air induction system. The filter has been tested to resist breakdown from chemical contaminants and is tough enough to withstand bird strike impacts. Tests results show that the new air filter offers improved airflow, which many operators have credited for lower ITT’s and reduced fuel consumption – which is a marked improvement over the previous paper media filters. Ground crews, too, have given their seal of approval to the new system, as

Air Tractor’s Ram Air Inlet gets a thumbsup from operators.

maintenance issues have been simplified with the easy-to-install easy-to-remove design. No washing or cleaning is required – the lightweight, flexible filter element is disposable, and more economical to use than the old paper media filters. “We continue to listen to operator reports from the field about the ram air filter performance,” says Schroeder. “Overall the comments are very positive, and if there’s a way we can make it even better, we will pursue that.”

Air Tractor to offer next generation hopper quantity and boom pressure gauge in 2013 OLNEY, Texas – Air Tractor, the world’s leading manufacturer of aerial application aircraft, has announced, starting in the second quarter of 2013, it will begin offering the highly accurate Reabe “True Quantity” hopper quantity and boom pressure gauge as standard equipment on 2013 production aircraft. The Reabe “True Quantity” system represents state-of-the art accuracy and a degree of precision that will translate into real operational efficiencies for ag pilots and operators. Applying the same technology that allows high-end industrial milling machines to maintain accuracy to within one thousandth of an inch, the “True Quantity” system offers onegallon precision, from full to empty, in a 500-gallon hopper.

“Air Tractor’s mechanical hopper gauge was about as reliable as a gauge can be.” said Air Tractor’s engineering manager David Ligon, “Now, with the Reabe system, operators will have the reliability but also with an impressive new level of accuracy.” The new system measures hopper fluid level to 1/1000th of an inch, then converts and displays the available quantity in gallons or liters. The system also detects whether the aircraft is in flight or on the ground and automatically adjusts the quantity displayed to reflect the aircraft’s attitude. Both positive and negative spray boom pressure is displayed. With its one-inch numerals, the display is easily readable in sunlight by the pilot or the loader and brightness can be adjusted to suit the conditions. The system has undergone more than

two years of field testing and earned STC and PMA certification from the FAA. “This system offers a degree of accuracy that the ag operators have long wanted,” said Air Tractor president Jim Hirsch. “Couple that with an Air Tractor, and you have got a winning combination.”

Mystery photo revealed Gull-Wing airplane for agricultural use gives pilot better view Specially designed for spraying, dusting and seeding, a new slow-speed agricultural airplane carries loads of more than 2500 pounds. It has a gulled center-wing section, with flight instruments mounted along the trailing edge, permitting the pilot better forward visibility and allowing him to watch the instruments without looking down into the cockpit. The aft end of the fuselage is open for easy cleaning. The Air Tractor’s cruising speed of 75 miles per hour allows good ground coverage from altitudes of 30 to 40 feet, instead of lower heights required in some older craft. Since 1987 the AT-502 series has set the standard as the industry’s most popular ag plane. You can own one with attractive financing options from Wells Fargo. Talk to your Air Tractor dealer. TFN

AT-802: Capacity that creates profits. An 800-gallon hopper, zippy 190 mph ferry speeds, and greater working capacity than any other ag aircraft on the market - the AT-802 is simply a hoss. With the AT-802 you’ll ferry faster, spray more fields and do bigger jobs all in one load. That’s production that only Air Tractor can offer you. Visit with your Air Tractor dealer about the AT-802. And ask about special Air Tractor financing now available from Wells Fargo for qualified buyers. TFN 2013 Air Tractor AT-502B, PT6A-34AG 750hp, Nuevo para entregar en Junio de 2013. AT-504: Learn and earn. With sideby-side cockpit seating and 485-gallon capacity, the AT-504 is a great way to train new ag pilots and earn while they learn. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG turbine engine, you’ll get working speeds and performance like the tried and true AT-502B. And when the training day is done, you’ll see that it was productive workday, too. Wells Fargo financing for qualified buyers is available; just visit with your Air Tractor dealer. TFN

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. TFN
