Good to the Last Crop. High yields don’t come easy. But for the folks who fly a Thrush, they come a whole lot easier. It’s not surprising since every Thrush offers superb visibility, speed, and maneuverability. Not to mention parts that withstand the test of time, weather, and plenty of long workdays. All so you can fly more hours than in any other ag plane. It’s what has made Thrush the favorite of some of the biggest crop dusting operations in more than 80 countries. And counting. Get the straight story on what’s happening at Thrush Aircraft. Visit us online or call Eric Rojek at 229.789.0437.

from the cockpit

Keep Turning... By now, everyone knows the NAAA convention and exhibition in Las Vegas was a record breaking success, outnumbering the Savannah convention in 2010 by 50-60 attendees. To me, this is a direct reflection of the series of banner years for ag-operators across the country. Because of the Hilton Hotel Convention Center’s design, there were only three aircraft on display, a 510G Thrush, AT-502B and Bell 47 helicopter. The fixedwing aircraft had to be trucked-in and assembled in the exhibit hall. Next year in Savannah, new entrance doors should be completed and, hopefully, there will be more aircraft on display. Have you noticed the BASF ads on television? They aren’t about ag-aviation, however, they do not shy away from the “chemical” word. At the end of the advertisement, the company logo proudly claims, “BASF - The Chemical Company”. I agree with this way of identification. More chemical companies should follow suit and not be timid about who they are. Remember the slogan, “Better living through chemistry”? That is such a true statement. Anyone arguing otherwise needs to get their head out of the sand. Everywhere you look, chemistry affects our lives in more good ways than bad. Give me good chemistry anytime. I like

my food without disease, no insects and positively no E. coli! I also like swimming in a sanitized pool and wearing clean clothes; which is not possible without chemicals. Next time someone makes a derogatory remark about chemicals, more specifically pesticides, be prepared to defend them. Compare everyday things that are usually taken for granted and not viewed as chemical/pesticide laden. The pool and laundry are only two examples. Even soap used as an organic (I hate that word) pesticide is still a chemical and if you get in your eyes, it is a dangerous one. This month kicks off the beginning of 2012. My how the clouds pass us by. Ag-operations south of the equator are in full swing. While those north of it should be planning and preparing for the 2012 season. Part of that preparation should be attending state trade shows. If your state has already hosted its convention, then begin putting into place the things you learned there. If you didn’t attend, or don’t plan to attend one in 2012, shame on you. You should attend for your own benefit. This month’s cover story is one that spans the lifetime of an operator; how Wilburn Johnson began and how he left his company in the capable hands of his sons. His story is not unlike many others.

It is always good to know our history; Johnson Flying Service is part of it. Also in this edition of AgAir Update, you’ll find a more detailed article about my evaluation flight of the 510G Thrush than the blog I published the end of November. Blogs are good for publishing information quickly. However, nothing beats print for details. I know you’ll enjoy reading about this fantastic ag-plane, even if you aren’t a Thrush pilot! AgAir Update (Graham and I) will attend many of the state conventions during January and February. Please be sure to come by our booth and visit. I may be jumping ahead of myself, but I think Graham has video plans that you may want to check out. So until next month, Keep Turning... P.S. - I suppose you noticed I’ve replaced “Blue Sky and Tailwinds” with “Keep Turning”. Sometimes, you just have to make a change, a refresh. I may slip in a BST, but for now, I want you to “Keep Turning”. You can apply various annotations to this slogan; “Keep Turning” the aircraft in a profitable and safe way and “Keep Turning” the pages of AgAir Update, to name a few.

blog comment 80-85 gph? (510G Thrush evaluation flight) That seems excessive, that puts it on roughly the same level as an 802 with a PT6A-67, especially since our M601 (751 shp) indicates around 45 gph. I hope that was a typo! Anonymous blog commentor The fuel flow is not a typo. According to Jody Bays, V-P at Thrush, I

misunderstood him. Here are Jody’s comments: “From what I have seen, fuel burn for the 510G is almost identical to the 510P, just you’re going about 10 mph faster in the G. Slow down to the P speeds and you’re burning about 5 GPH less than the -34P. fuel burn for both aircraft should average around 50 GPH, more if you “dog” it, less if you “baby” it. I don’t think you can make the H-80 burn 80 GPH, I must have mis-spoken.” Hope this helps, —Bill

prop Bill, just read article on 4-blade prop for 510G. Do you give the prop credit for the increased performance over your first flight in the 510G, or were other changes made in aircraft or engine settings? Is anyone testing this prop on a 510P? Thanks, Ricky Davidson Southland Flying Service, Inc. Tchula, MS Hello Ricky; Yes, I give all of the credit of the performance improvement of the 4-blade 510G over the GE H80 I flew last December to the 4-blade Hartzell prop. That is the only significant change that I know of made to the aircraft. However, the overall performance of the 510G over the older version of the turbine Thrush is not only the H80, but also the reduction of about 300 pounds of ballast removed from the firewall area. Not only 300 pounds lighter, but taking that much weight off the “nose” makes an obvious difference in the aircraft’s performance, along with 800 SHP being available. The fuselage is also extended about 18” and that surely affects the balance of the aircraft. I don’t know if Thrush plans to test the Hartzell 4-blade on the Pratt. I’ve included Jody Bays, vice-president of Thrush, in this email for his comment. To me, it would seem worth a test. I do know the blades of the 4-blade prop are the same blades in the 3-blade prop on

the 510P, except there are four of them and they are four inches shorter on the 510G. Hope that answers your questions. Thanks for reading my blog and AgAir Update! Read Jody Bays reply below: Through rumor, I understand Queen Bee Specialities (ID) is flying a 502 with the four-blade now and likes it, but because it’s a heavier prop it moves the CG forward on the 502. It’s also a considerably more expensive prop. Our S2R-T34 could possibly benefit more from the four-blade than the GE airplane did. The T-34 is tail heavy, so extra prop weight is more lead that comes out of the airplane, plus due to the station number of the prop, 30 lbs of prop could be as much as 50-60 lbs of lead removed ending up with a lighter and better performing airplane, the down side being cost. On the plus side, a 106” prop at 2200 RPM, standard day, has a tip speed of .912 Mach, which is getting a little inefficient and noisy. At 102” and 2200 RPM, same day, tip speed is .877 Mach, still a little high, but much better, certainly would be quieter and should develop more thrust. Mach number of the GE prop is .83, about as low as you can go without losing thrust, in fact I was worried we would lose thrust, but apparently didn’t. The airplane you flew last week is a different airplane than the blue one you flew at your hangar before last year’s NAAA show, not vastly different, but down under the skin, there are several changes. We have spent the past year trying to work out any of the “bugs”, plus it has been extensively pattern tested by both the USDA and Alan McCracken. On the GE, we haven’t been sitting on our hands while waiting for it to become a certified engine. We have done a lot of “polishing”, four different props, four different exhaust stacks, plus a lot of testing on control throws, ratios etc. to try to get a “balanced” airplane. I hate an airplane that is sensitive

and light on aileron, but heavy on elevator or vice versa. I wanted to lighten the controls, pick up some maneuverability, but not lose any of the stability in gusty winds that a Thrush is known for. It’s easy to get maneuverability, but hard to get it without losing stability. I’m crossing my fingers, but the GE should launch without any of the problems new airplanes come with. I’ve had a free hand to change any little things we have come up with along the way, none have been big. The only thing I can think of that I haven’t addressed is no way you are checking the oil level without a ladder, or the tailgate of a pickup, or something similar. However, I have never had to add a drop of oil to any of the three GE engines we have had installed, still need to check it, of course. Jody Bays Vice President Thrush Aircraft Inc.

retired I enjoyed your video of the fellow laying down a swath of dust from an open cockpit. I really liked the way the wind was rippling the skin on his face. Brings back great memories. I was young and bulletproof in those days. About the only time today’s Ag-pilots get any wind on their face is when they have the AC set on hi-blower. Still a “retired” crop duster and seeing a bit of the world delivering these fine birds to customers all over,

Air Tractor by C.Jurgens His thrumming aerobatics are colored in a swift, blurring yellow. Crisp, white-cream spires of light pierce the cloud-less sky. The anticipation of dawn rests behind the silhouette of mountains. Tassels shiver and sway. He parts the sugary air above the corn. The pilot divides the field in intervals against the breeze. The plane’s mists swirl and curl in curves that collapse together. The frothing vapors blanket each stalk in minute droplets. A white flag billows. It snaps steadily toward the impending break of day. Cragged mountains are becoming bruisy-blue below his suspended turns. The pilot writes out the day’s first long, swaggering S’s and 8’s. His flight is a looping penmanship written on the wind. Gold spills into The Uncompahgre Valley from the glowing East. Constellations are snatched one-by-one by the Colorado sunrise. The pilot hangs his golden cursive from what’s left of the stars.

Legacy in Arkansas 11/25/1936 - 09/24/2010 Wilburn Johnson, owner, pilot and operator of Johnson Flying Service in Weiner, Arkansas, served as the Arkansas AAA president and on occasion represented the Association in Washington, D.C.

by Bill Lavender Often times, an ag-operator will start his ag-flying career at a young age and during the course of his career, raise a family. Many of these young pilots hope all along the boys (and sometimes the girls) will follow in their footsteps to become an ag-pilot, eventually taking over the business. There are several three-generation operations (and maybe even a fourth) to be found throughout the country. Undoubtedly, each succeeding generation sees the past generation as a mentor, offering

guidance and wisdom from past experiences. Such is the case at Johnson Flying Service in Weiner, Arkansas. Wilburn Johnson left his legacy for sons Cory and Trampas to follow. Wilburn Johnson grew up in the Mississippi Delta watching ag-pilots work their Stearman aircraft over the Mississippi cotton fields. In 1958, he married “the girl at the movie theater”, Charlene, who stayed with him until his death on September 24, 2010. Wilburn started to realize his boyhood dreams when he began ferrying and spraying 220 HP Stearmans for MidContinent Aircraft and Sales in Hayti, Missouri. When Mid-Continent became the first Ag-Cat dealer, he had the privilege of ferrying Ag-Cat Serial Number 1 and spraying with Serial Number 2, both powered by a 220 HP radial engine in an semi-open cockpit. The older Mid-Continent ag-pilots called him “Junior”. He was all of 22 years old, the youngest of the Mid-Continent pilots. Wilburn also dreamt of flying ag in California. In 1962, young, adventuresome and with Charlene pregnant with Cory, Wilburn set out west to find his fortune. Charlene

stayed behind in Mississippi until Cory was born, then moved to California to join Wilburn, who had been flying for Inland Crop Dusters and West Coast Flying Services. After about six years working in California, Wilburn started Johnson Flying Service in 1968. Two more sons, Rolly and Trampas, were born during this time. Wilburn decided the time had come to return back East where there were more rice fields and less ag-operators. In 1975, he packed up the family and set up an operation in Weiner, Arkansas. There were no other operators in the area. In the latter days, Wilburn often commented about an operator on “the corner of every rice field”. The Weiner, Arkansas location of Johnson Flying Service started with an Ag-Cat, then later adding a Cessna Ag-Truck. Business was growing and after three years Wilburn added a 600 HP radial-powered Thrush bought from Darryl Riddell in 1978. In 1980, he converted it to a Lane Conversion. A year later, he added a factory Ayres Turbo Thrush that he bought from Lane Aviation. Cory and Trampas grew up in the ag-aviation business. They loaded and flagged in their younger years. Wilburn taught them how to fly in a Citabria and Super

Cub, telling them, “I better not catch you making tight turns, or you will go back to loading.” He started both of them in their ag-flying career in 1991 flying a turbine Thrush with GPS. He paid them $150 a week. By the second year, they got a raise to $350. In 1992, Wilburn bought a third turbine powered Thrush so that each of them would have a plane to fly. Wilburn decided in 1993 that it was time to try out an Air Tractor. So, he bought an AT-502. At first, Cory and Trampas were not fond of the Air Tractor. They were used to the handling characteristics of the Thrush. Cory even threatened to quit if he had to keep flying the Air Tractor. Obviously, his complaints fell on deaf ears. Wilburn bought a second Air Tractor the next year, replacing a Thrush with each Air Tractor. Finally, Cory and Trampas

adapted to the way an Air Tractor handled and Wilburn added a third Air Tractor in 1995, becoming a complete Air Tractor fleet. With three similar aircraft, father and sons would often find themselves flying near the other. On one occasion, Trampas noticed Wilburn was going across the field without the spray turned on. Trampas could not help himself from saying, “Daddy, that spray sure is falling down in the rice. How do you do that?” Wilburn’s response, not knowing his spray was turned off, “Son, when you are as good as I am, it is not a problem.” “Daddy, you can turn on your pump, now”, Trampas replied, getting one up on dad. In 2000, after 42 years of agflying, Wilburn decided to slow down. Charlene, as she does today, continued working in the office scheduling and keeping the books. Wilburn sold two of the AT-502s and replaced them with an AT-602. By 2002, Wilburn stopped flying ag altogether, leaving all the flying duties to Cory and Trampas. He had trained them well. Streamlining the company, the last of the AT-502s was sold and replaced

with an AT-402. The 602 would work primarily the dry work, while the 402 caught the spraying jobs. Later, the 402 was sold and Cory flew an 802 and 502 for Ken Grubbs Aero in Harrisburg, Arkansas. Whenever Trampas would get behind in the 602, Cory would come over and help catch up. In 2011, Johnson Flying Service added its second AT-602. Trampas was staying behind too much with Cory working in Harrisburg. Now, with the two AT-602s, Johnson Flying Service can handle as much work as was done before with three AT-502s. Although Wilburn is no longer at the helm of Johnson Flying Service, his attitude and character in business are carried on through his sons, Cory and Trampas, and his wife Charlene. They are left with memories; like while watching an old family reel to reel film with his family, Wilburn once said, “This is what I do when a farmer won’t pay me”, as he rewound the film with the airplane flying backwards and sucking the spray back into the booms.

Although difficult to see in this photo of Johnson Flying Service’s AT-602 the top propeller blade is painted white, while the other blades are painted the traditional gray. It is believed that while in flight, the white blade is visible to birds that may not otherwise see it, helping to reduce bird strikes.

Air Tractor to offer solid-state digital engine analyzer – EI MVP-50T Air Tractor, the world’s leading manufacturer of aerial application aircraft, has announced that the company will soon begin offering the Electronics International MVP-50T Engine Analyzer as an option/alternative to analog instruments. FAA certification is expected sometime in 2012. Evaluation and testing of the MVP50T has been undertaken during the past year with the new 1000-gallon capacity Air Tractor AT-1002 serving as a test platform. “Throughout testing,” said Engineering Manager David Ligon, “the performance of the MVP-50T has been flawless. It allows pilots to quickly assess extremely accurate readouts of the pertinent information about engine performance.” The all solid-state electronics digital display of the MVP-50T provides complete engine performance information at a glance: propeller tachometer, gas generator, internal

turbine temperature, engine torque, oil pressure, oil temperature, battery voltage, generator output, fuel quantity, fuel flow, fuel pressure, time to empty, and other critical functions.

“Throughout testing,” said Engineering Manager David Ligon, “the performance of the MVP50T has been flawless. Other 50T features include Over and Under Temperature lights that provide pilots with immediate alerts whenever critical function parameters are exceeded during flight. Onboard Data-Recording gives pilots the capability

to review entire flight histories for any flight. Customizable Checklists allow the MVP-50T to visually inform the pilot which steps have and have not been completed in each checklist. General Information Screens and Flight Plan Screens can be customized to store critical flight information, allowing pilots to create a “virtual cockpit”. An Onboard USB Port allows pilots to quickly change configurations, update firmware, upload checklists, upload flight plans, upload general information screens, and download critical flight data logs. “At Air Tractor reliability and performance is at the heart of everything we do.” says Ligon. “With its solid-state design, ease of operation, precision accuracy, and long list of features, the MVP-50T fits right in.”

GE Aviation’s H80 turboprop engine received EASA engine certification PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC -- GE Aviation’s H80 turboprop engine has received type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) during a celebration in Prague in the Czech Republic. This is the first GE Aviation engine to receive its initial type certification from EASA. “The type certification on the H80 engine is a significant achievement for the GE Aviation facility in the Czech Republic along with the engineering teams in Evendale, Ohio, and Lynn, Massachusetts, which helped in the design of the new turboprop engine,” said Paul Theofan, president and managing executive of GE Aviation’s Business and General Aviation Turboprops.

The H80 engine will feature an extended service life between overhauls. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine compared with the M601 engine, with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls. It will provide the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers to have flexibility in propeller selection. The H80 engine has been selected to power multiple applications, including the Aircraft Industries L410 commuter plane, Thrush 510G agricultural aircraft and Technoavia’s newly designed Rysachok aircraft, a twin-engine, 10-seat general aviation aircraft. The H80powered Thrush 510G aircraft has been flight testing since last year and entry into service is anticipated early next year. Last month, Aircraft Industries began its flight tests of the H80-powered L410 aircraft, which is expected to enter service in the third quarter of 2012.

When the H80 enters service next year, GE Aviation will be prepared with a vast network of service and support centers. GE has named Premier Turbines as a Designated Repair Center for M601 and H80 engines in North and South America. The following were named Authorized Service Centers for M601

and H80 engines: Smyrna Air Center, Cascade Aircraft Conversions, Winnipeg River Aircraft, Sky Tractor Supply Company and Cutter Aviation for North America; Alagro Fumigaciones, Solo Aviation, and TAM AE for South America; and AG Aero for Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

The agreement, which governs a broad suite of commercial arrangements, extends the partnership between P&WC and Thrush Aircraft, one of the leading agricultural aircraft manufacturers in the world. P&WC is a United Technologies Corp. company (NYSE: UTC). “The 10-year timeframe of our agreement with Thrush speaks to the long-standing and co-operative relationship we have,” said Mike

Perodeau, Vice President, Corporate Aviation and Military Engines. “We are gratified that P&WC will continue to work with Thrush to meet its engine needs, and we expect that this new agreement will set the stage for joint development work in the coming decade.” The commercial agreement announced today includes details on pricing, technical standards, terms and conditions, aftermarket support, warranty and training. “The completion of this long-term agreement is a significant new milestone for us,” said Payne Hughes, president of Thrush Aircraft, “and a meaningful one for our customers worldwide. We have always enjoyed our relationship with the Pratt & Whitney Canada team, and it is gratifying to know we’ll be continuing to work together well into the future. Our aircraft, and their engines, make for a very good combination.”

P&WC and Thrush have worked in tandem for many years as the manufacturer built its fleet of highly respected aerial application aircraft. Thrush’s 550P is powered by the PT6A-60AG engine, its 510P by the PT6A-34AG engine and the 710P by the PT6A-65AG engine. Thrush’s aircraft are known for structural durability and excellent performance under the most extreme conditions. They are flying today in more than 80 countries. “PT6 engines are used by 7,000 operators around the globe and stand as a testament to how P&WC reinvents its products to meet emerging customer needs,” said Perodeau. “Although other engine OEMs have tried, none have come close to matching the versatility and reliability of the PT6. We have consistently taken advantage of aerodynamic and material technology advancements to enhance the performance of the PT6 without

significantly increasing its size. We also helped build the modern agriculture industry by developing a distinct family of PT6A engines specifically for the agriculture market.”

“PT6 engines are used by 7,000 operators around the globe.” said Perodeau. There are currently some 27,000 PT6 engines in operation today, and the engine has booked a remarkable 350 million hours of flight. From flying in the Antarctic at 75 degrees below zero to supporting environmental efforts in reforestation programs, the PT6 engine and its adaptability continue to earn the respect and loyalty of pilots worldwide.

510G updates to a 4-blade propeller by Bill Lavender Last November, I had the privilege to travel to the Thrush Aircraft factory in Albany, Georgia to attend its employee and customer Thanksgiving appreciation lunch, as well as fly the yet to be certified 510G Thrush. I enjoyed flying the aircraft more than the lunch, however the fresh caught Georgia fried catfish were superb. I had flown the GE-powered 510-gallon

The author prepares to make evaluation flight in 510G Thrush with its newly installed 4-blade propeller.

Thrush almost a year ago at AgAir Update’s Open House and Hangar Party. Then, it had the same 3-blade Hartzell propeller as the P&WC PT6A-34 510P Thrush, with the exception the GE prop was shot peened. Dennie Stokes also flew it that day and we felt the aircraft did not have the “get up and go” on takeoff for 800 SHP. This time, at the Thrush factory, the 510G had a 4-blade Hartzell propeller. This prop was the fourth generation of propellers fitted to the H80 engine for the Thrush. The 4-blade Hartzell propeller is 102” long, four inches shorter than the PT6A Hartzell prop. Earlier, the 106” PT6A propeller (shot peened), an AVIA propeller and a 108” Hartzell prop had been tested. The 108” propeller was another disappointment in performance, like the prop the PT6A engine uses. However, the buyer will have a choice between the AVIA or the 4-blade Hartzell for the H80 engine on the 510G. The 3-blade AVIA is manufactured in the Czech Republic, is relatively expensive and has special service considerations.

Turbine Installation, LLC

The Hartzell is more expensive than its 3-blade counterpart and weighs 26 pounds more. However, it is higher from the ground than any of the other props, helping protect it from FOD and should be quieter. Its excellent performance easily offsets any weight gain. Starting the H80 is a no-brainer. A pilot would have to be on a mission of destruction to hot start the H80. Flip on the Master, MVP-50T wakes up. Once the MPV-50 does is checks, press exit, enable auto-start and turn on boost pump switch, fuel control in ground idle, press the start button for three seconds, H80 completes start, turn on the starter/ generator and turn off the auto-start. For normal ops, the flight idle position of the fuel control lever is inop. It is only used in an emergency when, for whatever reason, the throttle system fails. Then, the emergency auto-start switch is activated and the throttle is overridden by the fuel control lever. However, there is no governor action and an engine over speed could occur without the pilot’s attention. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the performance of the H80 powered 510G Thrush. Flying it with an empty hopper and 228 gallons of fuel on board for the first load, there was no doubt during takeoff the aircraft had “get up and go”. I found the 510G to be about 10 MPH faster than its sister 510P. At 500 feet AGL, 160+ MPH was easy to obtain with 90% torque and 1,900 RPM. At Jody’s request, I stalled the aircraft at altitude. He was correct that the aircraft is a gentle giant and simply does not do anything unusual in the stalling configuration. I took it to full stall empty, but admit I only approached

The MVP-50T display while in level flight. Note power is at 95% torque, which equals 760 SHP that puts the 510G Thrush at 165 MPH at 3,300 AGL. The ITT is deep in the green. to a stall (stall horn sounding, stick slightly mushy) when loaded in the turns. Who in their right mind would want to be in a relatively steep turn, loaded and intentionally stall the aircraft while low to the ground? There is no reason to accidentally, fully stall the aircraft loaded and turning; the aircraft gives you plenty of warning beforehand. The maximum rated 800 SHP for the H80 is 100% torque and 2,080 RPMs. One percent of torque equals 8 SHP. The H80 is a derated engine. Dynamically, it is capable of developing more than 1,100 SHP. The H80 on the 510G has been limited to 800 SHP, primarily for simplifying certification. At rated power, the H80 is purring like a kitten and operating with a relatively low ITT temperature. Because of this, it is able to reach its maximum certified 800 SHP up to 107°F. This translates into a high density altitude, making the H80 a workhorse in any ag spraying environment. Satisfied with the empty performance of the 510G, I made another load with 350 gallons and I estimate about

No doubt, the 510G Thrush with its new red and white paint scheme casts a beautiful and daunting footprint.

The 4-blade Hartzell prop easily taxies the loaded 501G Thrush to the runway for takeoff.

200 gallons of fuel. The Electronics International MPV-50 instrument gauge (which is the cat’s meow) does not indicate any more than 82 gallons per side, but neither does the old fuel indicators, pegging full at about 80 gallons per side. The real purpose of flying the aircraft with only 350 gallons was to loosen the rust on this ag-pilot’s skills. I decided it was prudent to fly with a piece of a load, just to be sure the “like riding a bicycle, you never forget” saying held true with flying a loaded ag-plane. It did. For the third load, I overfilled the hopper with water onto the tarmac and the fuel level was still somewhere above the MVP-50T max indicated 164 gallons. Taxiing out, the aircraft felt like any heavily loaded aircraft with its gross weight somewhere over 10,000 pounds (4,800 pounds empty weight + 1,080 pounds of fuel + 200 pounds of pilot + 4,080 pounds of water = 10,160 pounds). The 510G is certified for a maximum gross weight of 10,500 pounds. With water in the hopper, it would be next to impossible to exceed that limit. Really doesn’t matter, because the aircraft can carry far more than 10,500 pounds. One of the interesting aspects of the 510G is its CG configuration. An ag-plane will fly better with a slightly rearward point of CG. Remembering the 510G is different from any other Thrush in that it does not have 300 pounds of ballast up front and the nose is extended 18 inches past the firewall, the CG range is 24” forward to 30.5” aft. A max fuel load only moves the CG aft

by 2.5”, while a full hopper (depending somewhat on the product) moves the CG slightly forward, less than an inch. The most rearward CG configuration is an empty hopper with full fuel. The most forward CG configuration is a full hopper and with no fuel. Neither of these configurations are typical for spraying. The CG ends up ideally located with a load and moves very little with an ever changing gross weight. Adding power to 100% torque and 2,080 RPMs for takeoff, the tail was up in 1,300 feet and the aircraft was off the ground at about the 1,700-foot point, climbing steadily at 100 MPH. However, there was a reported 7-8 knot headwind and the outside temperature was 74°F. In my opinion, the advantages of the wind and temperature were easily offset by this out-of-practice pilot. No doubt a current Thrush pilot could easily beat my numbers. I ferried the 510G to the field using 90% torque and 1,900 RPMs. My IAS was 160 MPH, loaded. I used the same power setting for the spray runs and found myself moving across the field at 165-170 MPH. I know this airspeed is about 25 MPH faster than the ideal airspeed for a good spray pattern. In the case of the 510G, that has been disproved by USDA spray pattern analysis’s that indicate application speeds up to 180 MPH are acceptable. The pattern may be acceptable, but the pilot better be up to speed too; you are quickly approaching any obstacles. The fuel flow on the MVP-50T was not calibrated to the H80. I know this

because it was reading 35 GPH at high power settings. Jody Bays, vice-president of Thrush Aircraft and test pilot, told me I was burning about 50-60 gallons an hour. On the same fuel burn, the 510G is about 10 MPH faster or at the same IAS, about 10 GPH less than the 510P. This animal of an ag-plane was a thrill

to fly. I could find zero wrong with the aircraft. It flies like a dream, very much like the older, short wing, 400-gallon, rag tail, -34 Thrushes, except it has a 25% larger hopper, double the fuel capacity and will outrun the older Thrush like “a scalded dog”.

Despite a tough start, 2011 growing season finishes strong RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC— Despite some of the most challenging growing conditions in decades, 2011 crops rebounded well, allowing many corn and soybean growers to capitalize on high commodity prices. Growers who implemented proactive crop protection practices, including use of preventative fungicides to control disease and promote Plant Health, proved that intensively managed acres help growers get the most out of every acre. “The wet, late spring had growers bracing for the worst,” said Nick Fassler, Technical Market Manager for BASF. “While harvest results showed a lot of variability in both yield and quality, it was a profitable year for growers across the Midwest. Those that intensively managed their acres and used preventative crop protection application practices are seeing even higher profits.” Nationwide, yields landed below the

five-year average, but with the high price of grains, many growers saw profitable returns. In many cases, those who planned ahead for their herbicide and fungicide applications saw greater success than others. Although yield increases of this nature are not typical, growers who follow a planned approach often see a profitable return on investment. In four years of replicated university and seed company trials1 from 2007 to 2010,Headline AMP™ fungicide showed consistent corn yield advantages of more than 10.5 bushels per acre over untreated areas. In soybean trials, Headline® fungicide provided consistent yield advantages of more than 3.8 bushels per acre over untreated areas, while regularly outperforming competitive products. Looking forward to next year, it’s important for growers to evaluate the effectiveness of their management practices in 2011 and use what they

have learned to make improvements in 2012. The latest research on proactive crop management programs can also provide valuable guidance.

In soybean trials, Headline® fungicide provided consistent yield advantages “We strongly encourage growers to start thinking about next year’s crop shortly after harvest,” Fassler said. “Looking to next season, we recommend that growers think about the right seed varieties based on expected disease pressures, as well as planning ahead for a residual herbicide application and ideal timing for a preventative fungicide

to help squeeze the most out of each acre.” Many growers recognize the value of this approach, according to a recent survey2 conducted by BASF Crop Protection. The survey showed that 83 percent of row crop growers agree that a preventative fungicide application is necessary, because once disease is present, yield has already been lost. A nearly equal number of respondents said a planned fungicide helps gain more yield than fields left unprotected. High commodity prices, as well as an increased focus on risk management, means more and more growers are looking for ways to intensively manage their corn and soybean acres. realize greater communication with their customers, improved organization and communication with the pilots, efficiency and safety through improved flight planning, and better ground crew information and preparation. Application planning is streamlined and input costs are reduced significantly as a dispatcher can better manage work orders and direct the aircraft to avoid duplicate or inaccurate applications. Viewing real-time information, communicating scheduled and completed work immediately, and being able to review previous flight data also allows companies to verify work is being done properly. “Hemisphere GPS’ air business is focused on products featuring agricultural services that save time and money for customers through more efficient use of instant information,” said Greg Guyette, General Manager of the Air Business Unit at Hemisphere GPS. “Imagine a world where jobs are created from the truck or coffee shop, and a bill is sent the same minute the job is finished with thorough statistics of precisely what was done and where. With HQ Sync, this capability is now a reality.” “Today’s luxury of real-time work order tracking from recommendation to completion is tomorrow’s necessity,” said Clay Rassi, AgSync Sales Manager. “HQ Sync connects the pilot and plane into the live work order tracking loop to allow growers, consultants, chemical suppliers, and applicators to communicate like never before.” HQ Sync will be featured at aerial application shows around the country in 2012 including the Texas Agricultural Aviation Association’s Convention in Fort Worth, TX on January 4th and the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association’s Convention on January 8th. Mark Hartz of Almyra, AR leads NAAA’s 2012 officer team WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is pleased to announce that Mark Hartz of Almyra, AR, has been elected President of NAAA for 2012. Hartz is the co-owner of Grand Prairie Dusters Inc., a two-airplane operation that has been in business for 23 years. Hartz and his business partner, Scott Goetz, operate off of a municipal airport and have the added responsibility of managing the airport. They are Mark Hartz mainly a rice

operation but also treat wheat, soybeans and corn. Hartz’s term as president marks his third officer role at the national level. He served as NAAA’s treasurer in 2001 and vice president in 2011 during Rick Richter’s administration. NAAA’s full Board of Directors consists of 42 State, Regional and Allied Industry Directors, the NAAA officer team, the WNAAA and NAAREF presidents, the immediate past treasurer and five past presidents, as well as numerous committee appointees. Hartz said he finds it gratifying to see such a large group of people working together united for a common cause. “It’s an education to see exactly what NAAA does and how much time is involved.

Some of my greatest friends on earth come from my association with the NAAA,” Hartz said. In addition to his previous officer roles with NAAA, Hartz has served on the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association’s Board for many years, including filling all of its officer positions. He has been an aviation safety counselor for FAAST since 1999 and in 2011 won the prestigious Regional FAAST Team Award. Serving alongside Hartz on NAAA’s 2012 officer team are Leif Isaacson of Terreton, Idaho, Vice President; Gaylon Stamps of Panhandle, Texas, Secretary; and Kyle Scott of Fort Morgan, Colo., Treasurer. “I’m deeply humbled and honored to be asked to serve,” Hartz said of his duties over the next 12 months as NAAA’s highest elected officer. “It’s my intention to do the very best job that I can and I’m really looking forward to it.” Leif Isaacson has been an ag pilot Leif Isaacson for 37 years and

the owner and operator of Desert Air Ag since 1986. Desert Air uses four turbine Air Tractors for ag work and a helicopter for county and sheriff work. Isaacson is a longtime NAAA member and has been active on its Board of Directors for several years. He has been a PAASS presenter for the last five years and heavily involved in NAAREF, NAAA’s sister foundation. He served as NAAREF’s Vice President in 2011 and is continuing in that capacity in 2012, putting him in the unique position of filling the vice president’s post in NAAA and NAAREF simultaneously. Gaylon Stamps is a secondgeneration ag pilot. He took over Stamps Spraying Service in 1975 when his father went into corporate aviation and has Gaylon Stamps been an operator ever since. Stamps flies a Cessna at home, but for past four years he has been a “hired gun” flying for other operators. He taught his son-in-law how to be an ag pilot, and now Jason Davis does the majority of

Grant Lane, Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, TX: “We needed an inexpensive solution to finding the airstrip at night. Being familiar with my airport, I could always get somewhat close and adjust at the last minute to be lined up down the runway. hands-on flying

Breaking camp Thinking back about last year, when the spraying season grinds to a halt, the geyser of work orders slow to a trickle then dry up completely. I find myself

flying back to the strip after my last job of the season. A clear blue sky above and an abundant green ground below. I look down on my shadow skating along

beneath me and experience a great sense of pride in the work that we ag pilots have done here. The fields are full and tall, flowing in

the wind and bursting with the life that the grower prayed for. It’s just a matter of time now before the last chapter in the cycle is finally written. Soon the giant harvesters will take to the fields and cut huge swaths through thousands of acres that only a few months before were barren ground. Mother Nature still has a hand or two to play and we all hope her cards will come up fair. After I land and shut down, completing that last load, the airplane will finally get its thoroughly needed scrub down and will be pushed back into the hangar for a rest. There’s a list of squawks, minor things that will get repaired or adjusted during the downtime and it will be readied for the next season. It’s silly to be melancholy about such things, but I guess that’s just the way it is. Time to break camp. Pack up the ragged old sea bag, pull the chocks on the travel trailer and head back to the southwest. Northern California has been good to me and I hate to see it fade away in the rearview mirror. I am fortunate to have a good supportive spouse; who braved the long, arduous I-5 trip on several occasions in order to share the season and hang out with her meandering ag pilot husband. We had a great time and the folks at Williams Ag Service became our adopted family. What a gift this is. For an ag pilot, having two seasons is about as good as it gets. The transition

between the two requires preparation and thought. Its two totally different worlds and a guy can get himself lost quite easily if he doesn’t keep a good separation between his brain and his bottom. I try to take some time off between seasons to decompress a little bit and catch up on the things that always seem to take a back seat to the job. A new season represents new challenges. Getting back in the saddle of night flying and in the cockpit of an airplane I’ve grown unfamiliar with is an anxious thought, but an exercise that I always look forward to. As a practice, I have one of the other pilots give me a re-familiarization brief on the aircraft and the area. I spend extra time getting to know the cockpit layout and switches, even going through the motions several times reaching for and activating the different switches and controls with my eyes closed, including back up switches. I’ll double check the rudder pedals and taxi the aircraft around a little bit just to get the sight picture right and a feel for the weight and balance of the machine. I can’t speak for all pilots, but getting to know the airplane a little bit on the ground works a lot better for me than trying to

do all the catching up in the air. There are a lot of things that a pilot will forget during the course of flying a different aircraft in a different part of the country. I don’t believe there has been a pilot yet that doesn’t experience some sort of apprehension when moving between seasons, whether they admit it or not. To quote a man I once knew, “If you ain’t a little scared, then you don’t appreciate the situation you’re in.” During those first ten or so hours in transition, it’s important to first concentrate on flying the airplane and correctly identifying the fields. This can be particularly challenging if your breaking (back) in period coincides with some of those really dark nights the southwest is known for. Even the boss warns that staying safe trumps being efficient while familiarity and competence returns. As far as being a traveling ag pilot goes; I believe the gypsy in my blood is wearing a little thin. It could be getting time to put the old sea bag away for good and let the roots grow someplace where the word “home” is an actual place and not just a vague destination over the horizon. We’ll see what lies ahead.

The 7.5 Auger Dan loader by Graham Lavender Auger Dan had a problem. Quite often, he was asked for what he describes as an “entry-level” dry loader system. For an ag operation that is breaking into dry work, many were looking for a good used unit designed for a one-ton truck to start them on the dry materials path. Dan commented that the truck needed to be in good shape, with the ability to make long hauls to his home base in

Arkansas for a retrofit to an Auger Dan system. In reality, Dan Whited discovered most operators wanted to keep their one-ton truck for a backup; not use it exclusively for an auger truck. With this in mind, he developed the self-contained 7,500 lb auger system, labled “The 7.5”. The 7.5 system consists of a folding 10 “ stainless steel auger pipe and 7,500 lb capacity stainless steel hopper

mounted on a fork-liftable structure; complete with a Honda-powered hydraulic system. The hydraulic system is electric/manual and enables the unit controls to be operated from the truck cab. This system can be outfitted with all of the options of Auger Dan’s larger trucks: electronic scales, roll over tarp, 430-gallon fuel tank, load sock height adjuster and anti-dribble valve. Some of Auger Dan’s customers have

KUGLER KQ-XRN

dedicated a truck to this system and installed a hydraulic PTO pump instead of the Honda system. The 7.5 system has been installed on a variety of trucks, including a 3500 Chevy, 550 Ford, 4500 GMC and even a 4300 International; all while maintaining legal height and width measurements for highway travel. The 7.5 is designed to ship in a high cube shipping container. This allows for it to be shipped anywhere in the world. It has also been shipped on a lowboy trailer and a two-axle utility trailer. However, most customers send a truck to Auger Dan to have the system installed. The 7.5 loader will load a 600-gallon aircraft with urea in a little over two minutes. It is clearly an excellent backup system. For large, multi-aircraft operations, it may be more practical to consider Auger Dan’s larger 10,000 lb loading unit.

“You can’t find a slow release nitrogen product that’s easier to handle and easier on the equipment. We piggyback aerial applications of KQ-XRN with fungicides with good results. No other products fit our system as well as Kugler products.”

GOOD JUDGEMENT AND RISK MANAGEMENT

HeliGPS is introduced to the market After two years of tests on thousands of acres HeliGPS was introduced to the market. HeliGPS is a GPS mapping and guidance software package that runs on any Windows PC. By utilizing standard off-the-shelf hardware it provides a very cost-effective solution to GPS guidance in forestry and agriculture applications. Pilots simply bring a netbook or tablet into the aircraft, connect a GPS receiver and start their work. Half or even quarter boom operations are properly recorded with the optional EK-45 device and the software may be controlled from a simple multi-position thumb switch. The applied passes are shown as a 3D projection allowing the operator to view a larger area ahead. Many highend features such as Google Earth KML file import/exports, ESRI shape files import/exports, waypoint imports,

seamless weather data integration or the loading of previous operation data in the background assist the pilot in his daily work. The pilot may also add information such as customer data, products used, rates applied and others to the current operation file. All data of a job or field is stored in a single file making it easy to transfer the complete information to the office or to a different unit. HeliGPS supports the business with customizable outputs to standard office applications such as MS Excel for the creation of spray records or invoices directly from the application. The benefits of this system are further enhanced with standard features found on any Windows system. Using wireless or a standard internet connection, files may be sent to the

Ugly Duckling

With this IMO, I am taking a little different approach. Do you remember the children’s story about the “Ugly Flying Tiger Aviation offers Duckling”? It may have been one of flight and ground training Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Anyway, a mama for budding ag pilots, and duck was raising seven little baby ducks. turbine transition training All of the little yellow baby ducks were for older hands. about as cute as - cute little baby ducks except for one, which was big, brown and ugly. However, eventually the ugly duckling turned out not to be a duck at • Dual-Control Turbine Thrush all, but a swan, and she continued to

grow into an elegant, beautiful, graceful swan. In My Opinion, not too long ago, our industry was looked upon as the “ugly duckling” of the general aviation family. “Crop Duster” was a dirty word and a very derogatory term. But it isn’t that way today. In fact, we are the very envy of many pilots in almost all other fields of general aviation, even though some may still be reluctant to admit it. Lately, I accompanied my grandson, a senior in high school and a prospective college student to Delta State University, my own alma mater, in Cleveland, MS. new Diamond 42, twin engine aircraft. My grandson has a strong attraction to aviation; God only knows where he got that from! While walking through the guided tour of the university and the aviation department, several aspiring young aviators, as well as some members of the aviation faculty, grilled me with questions about ag aviation. It was obvious by their interest that our industry has a new face. One that I think has only made its strong appearance within the last 10-15 years - and it continues to flourish. As a matter of fact, I dare say that now we are members of the “elite” in the general aviation family and I know we are the

wing and a prayer

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

Entering into God’s rest The Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, where your fathers tested Me, tried Me and saw My works forty years. Therefore I was angry with that generation and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart and they have not known My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest’” (Hebrews 3:7-11). The writer is talking about when the Hebrew people complained against God and Moses about not having enough water and meat to eat, and when the people were afraid to go into the Promise Land because of giants in the land. Their unbelief and not being satisfied with God’s provision caused what should have been less than three months journey from

Egypt to the Promise Land to become forty years wandering in the desert (Exodus 17, Numbers 11, 14, 20)! By allowing fear to grip their hearts because they didn’t trust God’s power to deliver them, they created many problems for themselves. Our world is filled with turmoil, strife, hunger and unrest. The problem of getting a stable government in Iraq and the war that is still going on in Afghanistan, which seems there is no escaping with a solid victory. The conflicts, strife and hunger in parts of Africa that have no human answers! The problems that could arise if Iran gets a nuclear bomb and Israel thinking of bombing the Iranian nuclear facilities! The financial woes in Greece, Spain and

other European countries because they have been living above their financial means! And now the possibility of some large European banks collapsing because they like the high interest rates these bankrupt countries are paying them for their loans. One side wants to spend more than they have and the other side wants to profit from the other’s stupidity. People getting themselves into trouble and expecting someone else to bail them out! “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked” (Isaiah 57:20-21). The same thing that is happening to nations around the world is happening to many Christians today. They are never satisfied with what God has provided them, always wanting more. God expects people to work and make a living for

their family. “If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8). “The soul of a lazy man desires and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich” (Proverbs 13:4). Working hard at your business or job is honorable in God’s eyes. God tells us to be good employers and good employees (Ephesians 6:5-9). But God also expects us to take time in our life to worship and thank Him for His blessings. Habitual complaining about our problems is a lack of faith in God to take care of us, because nothing happens in a Christian’s life that isn’t ordained by God (Romans 8:28). “Beware, brethren, lest there be in

any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). The Hebrew people couldn’t enter into the promise land because of their unbelief. Lack of faith keeps many Christians from enjoying the rich and full life that God wants us to experience in Jesus Christ. Many Christians are still wandering around in the wilderness; allowing their fleshly desires to control their life and not separating themselves from the ways of this sinful world. Many Christians are living a defeated Christian life because they are not conquering over the things that God

expects us to conquer. We use excuses such as, “I have this weakness for this fleshly habit, or it’s this problem that I’m going through, or I want to get more worldly things—or there are just too many obstacles in this world for me to defeat.” Lack of faith can destroy our Christian experience on this earth. Peter said, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:2830). God made Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Our faith in Jesus Christ gives us eternal life, and delivers us from the dominion of sin (Romans 6:14), from the dominion of Satan, from the love of this world, from the lusts of our flesh, and from the love of self. This is a supernatural work of God in our life, which changes our heart and transforms our life. We don’t have to stay in that wilderness of sin, because we have God’s Spirit to guide us in a rich and full life in Jesus Christ. As you start this next year of your life, make sure your eternal rest in Jesus Christ is secure!

EPA releases work plan to improve evaluation of chemicals in the EDSP EPA is releasing an overview summary of the Agency’s work plan to improve the scientific methods used to evaluate chemicals that may affect the endocrine system in people and animals. This work plan relies on scientific advancements in computational modeling, molecular biology, toxicology, and advanced robotics. By incorporating these scientific advancements into evaluating chemicals under the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), EPA will prioritize and screen chemicals with greater speed, efficiency, and accuracy, while minimizing the use of laboratory animals. The work plan, referred to as EDSP21, follows recommendations made by the National Research Council (NRC) in a 2007 report on toxicity testing. Since EPA is required to complete registration review of registered pesticides by October 2022, new tools are needed to more quickly and efficiently screen and assess these pesticides. Development

and validation of these new tools will be a multiyear process. As these new tools become ready for use, the EDSP will transition to rely on computational toxicology methods and high throughput screens to more quickly and cost effectively assess potential chemical toxicity while minimizing the use of conventional whole animal studies. The work plan summary describes this transition. By way of background, EPA is required to screen pesticides and other chemicals for their potential to cause effects similar to those produced by estrogen and other natural hormones. For more information and to read a copy of the work plan, please visit: http://epa.gov/endo/

Airport (82V), Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, about 1300, and was scheduled to terminate at 82V. According to the pilot’s written statement, the airplane struck the top wire of a power line set just prior to commencing the spraying operation. The pilot stated that the airplane descended toward the field, and the right wing hit the ground followed by the engine. The airplane rolled to the left, with the left wing and tail sections contacting the ground; the airplane came to rest upright. The pilot reported no mechanical problems with the airplane, and the accident could have been prevented if he had paid more attention to the wire height and maintained additional clearance above the wires.

NTSB Identification: *ERA12CA003* Date: October 04, 2011 Location: Fort Pierce, FL Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: 1 Serious. The pilot estimated that he had serviced the tailwheel-equipped airplane with about 400 gallons of water and an unknown additional quantity of sulfur in preparation for an aerial application flight. Additionally, the pilot had previously installed rotary atomizer chemical disbursement devices on the airplane and then performed two test flights, noting that with the devices installed the airplane performed “sluggishly.” The pilot then taxied the airplane to the end of the 2,600-foot-long

runway with the flaps set to threefourths in preparation for takeoff. As the airplane accelerated down the runway, the tail of the airplane did not rise as the pilot expected, so he extended the flaps fully. As the airplane reached the end of the runway, the pilot felt that the airplane “did not want to fly.” He elaborated that while the engine instruments indicated no abnormalities, the engine was not providing the amount of power he expected and that the airplane’s performance was sluggish. He attempted to jettison the loaded chemical to reduce the airplane’s weight, but when he attempted to actuate the load jettison handle, it would not move. As the airplane approached tall trees beyond the end of the runway, and with the airplane nearing a stalled condition, the pilot attempted to land the airplane in an agricultural field ahead. During the landing, the airplane nosed over resulting in substantial damage to the nose, empennage, and left wing. A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the airplane following the accident and found no evidence of any preimpact mechanical

malfunctions or failures of the engine and that the load jettison mechanism functioned normally. An accurate account of the airplane’s weight at the time of the accident could not be calculated due to variances in the values provided by the pilot and the operator. Safety Board (NTSB) investigator-incharge, the pilot reported that during takeoff initial climb from a private airstrip at an altitude of about 150 feet above ground level (agl), the engine began to surge along with erratic propeller RPM and engine torque readings on the engine instruments. The pilot said he then initiated a 180-degree turn back to the departure airport and about half way through the turn, the engine lost power. He then initiated a forced landing in the direction of the departure airport. Subsequently, the airplane landed hard on the northern

part of the departure airport and came to rest upright. Examination of the airplane by company personnel revealed that both wings and fuselage were structurally damaged. The wreckage was recovered to a secure facility for further examination.

FAA issues new PT6A bearing AD The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-15AG, -27, -28, -34, -34AG, -34B and -36 series turboprop engines. This AD requires the removal of certain affected part manufacturer approval (PMA) replacement Timken Alcor Aerospace Technologies, Inc. (TAATI) first stage reduction sun gears and/ or the interacting planetary gear sets from the propeller reduction gearbox assembly. This AD was prompted by a failure report of a certain TAATI PMA sun gear, installed since December 22, 2008. We are issuing this AD to prevent failure of the sun gear, which will result in an engine in-flight shut down, possible uncontained engine failure, aircraft damage, and serious injuries. This AD is effective December 28, 2011.

This AD was prompted by a failure report of a certain TAATI PMA sun gear, installed since December 22, 2008. Since the FAA issued AD 2011-20-51, it received a report of another failure of a sun gear not listed in that AD. Analysis has revealed that additional PMA replacement TAATI gears, installed since December 22, 2008, have the same failure potential as the gears affected by that AD. The additional gears are identified as follows: Replacement first stage reduction sun gears, P/N E3024765, serial numbers (S/Ns) PC5-051 through PC5-089, and S/Ns SG36-051 through SG36-120, including the associated planetary gears in propeller reduction gearbox assembly. Replacement planetary gear sets, P/N E3101455-02, S/Ns EE-051 through EE197, S/Ns EE-4051 through EE-4094, and S/N EE-4113, including the associated sun gear in the propeller reduction gearbox assembly. To utilize chip detector inspections, within 10 operating hours after the effective date of this AD: Inspect the chip detector on the propeller reduction gearbox assembly for metal debris.

24A

agairupdate.com

Do the inspections in accordance with paragraph 1 of the Accomplishment Instructions of Timken Alcor Aerospace Technologies, Inc. Alert Service Bulletin No. T-804, Revision B, dated November 7, 2011. If the amount of metal debris found exceeds the allowable limits then, before further flight, permanently remove from service the affected gears as specified in paragraph (g) of this AD. Repeat the chip detector inspections within every 25 additional operating hours thereafter, until the affected gears are removed from service. Within 60 operating hours or 365 days after the effective date of this AD, whichever occurs first, permanently remove from service the PMA replacement TAATI first stage reduction sun gear and the interacting planetary gears, and the PMA replacement TAATI planetary gear sets and interacting gears, listed in paragraph (c) of this AD, from the propeller reduction gearbox assembly. The sun gear and planetary gear sets as-installed are considered to be

matched sets. Therefore, the sun gear and planetary gear sets associated as mating parts with an affected gear in the propeller reduction gearbox assembly must also be permanently removed from service. This AD applies to Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-15AG, -27, -28, -34, -34AG, -34B, and -36 series turboprop engines that have had maintenance done to the power section module involving the first stage reduction sun gear or planetary gear set replacement since December 22, 2008, and having a Timken Alcor Aerospace Technologies, Inc. (TAATI) part manufacturer approval (PMA) replacement first stage reduction sun gear, part number (P/N) E3024765, serial numbers (S/Ns) PC5-051 through PC5089, or S/Ns SG36-051 through SG36120, installed or TAATI PMA replacement planetary gear set, P/N E3101455-02, S/ Ns EE-051 through EE-197, or S/Ns EE4051 through EE-4094, or S/N EE-4113, installed. The FAA estimates the inspection in this AD will affect about 5,000 engines

installed on airplanes of U.S. registry. It also estimates the disassembly of reduction gearboxes will affect about 50 engines and the gear removal will affect about 40 engines. It also estimates that it will take about one work-hour per engine for inspecting the engine records. It also estimates that for about 10 engines, records identifying the gear S/N for each gearbox do not exist, so that it will take about 10 work-hours to inspect gears for affected S/Ns and then to reassemble the reduction gearbox. It also estimates that it would take about 16 work-hours for parts replacement. The average labor rate is $85 per work-hour. Required parts for one engine will cost about $14,500. Based on these figures, the FAA estimates the cost of the AD on U.S. operators to be $1,067,900.

FAA issues starter AD The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Continental Motors, Inc. (CMI) models TSIO-520, TSIO-550-K, TSIOF-550K, and IO-550-N series reciprocating engines. This emergency AD was sent previously to all known U.S. owners and operators of these engines. This AD requires replacing affected CMI starter adapters with starter adapters eligible for installation. This AD was prompted by five reports received of fractures in starter adapter shaft gears in certain part number (P/N) CMI starter adapters. The FAA is issuing this AD to prevent failure of the starter adapter gear shaft, leading to an inoperable oil scavenge pump and engine in-flight shutdown. This AD is effective December 28, 2011 to all persons except those persons to whom it was made immediately effective by Emergency AD 2011-25-51, issued on November 29, 2011, which contained the requirements of this amendment. This AD requires replacing affected CMI starter adapters with starter adapters eligible for installation.

The FAA estimates this AD will affect 195 engines installed on airplanes of U.S. registry. It also estimates it will take about four work-hours per engine to perform the actions required by this AD, and that the average labor rate is $85 per work-hour. Required parts will cost about $500 per engine. Based on these figures, it estimates the total cost of the AD to U.S. operators to be $163,800. This emergency AD applies to Continental Motors, Inc. (CMI) TSIO520-B, BB, D, DB, E, EB, J, JB, K, KB, N, NB, UB, VB; TSIO-550-K; TSIOF550-K; IO-550-N (Turbo-normalized only; STC SE10589SC); with a starter adapter part number (P/N) 642085A17, 642085A19, 642085A20, 642085-1A1, and R-642085A17, installed, where the engine was manufactured between January 1, 2011 and November 20, 2011, or, where a replacement new or rebuilt starter adapter that was purchased from Continental Motors, Inc. and installed between January 1, 2011 and November 20, 2011. Engine owners are required to comply

with this AD within the compliance times specified, unless already done. For starter adapters with less than 75 hours of total time-in-service (TIS) on the effective date of this AD, before further flight, replace the starter adapter with a starter adapter eligible for installation. For starter adapters with between 75 and 100 hours of total TIS, inclusive on the effective date of this AD, within the next 10 hours of engine operation, or before exceeding 100 hours TIS, whichever occurs first, replace the starter adapter with a starter adapter eligible for installation. For starter adapters with more than 100 hours of total TIS on the effective date of this AD, no further action is required. For the purpose of this AD, a starter adapter eligible for installation is a starter adapter with one of the P/ Ns listed in this AD that has a vibropeened manufacturer code below the ink stamped P/N on the starter adapter, or a starter adapter with one of the P/Ns listed in this AD that has more than 100 hours total TIS.

Your engine during the winter months? by Rob Seeman, Operations Manager, Covington Aircraft I am often asked, “Now that the (pleasant) flying weather has passed for most of us what is the best way to keep your engine in top condition through the winter months?” It is important to understand that there is no standard procedure that magically insures your engine will be corrosion free. Ultimately, the owner / operator of the aircraft is responsible to take what he feels as appropriate precautions. The geographic location of the aircraft will play an important role in proper preservation. Some of the recommendations that generally apply would be: • Change the engine oil. Although engine oil is made to lubricate the engine, many oils do have coating or preservative properties. This feature is hampered if the oil is not changed before storage. Used oil may contain contaminates and breakdown becoming acidic over a period of time. Changing the oil (and external

filter if applicable) and ground running the aircraft to operating temperatures is one basic procedure that will help fight corrosion during winter months. • Blanking the engine inlet and exhaust is an easy way to cut down on possible start up issues and lessen the amount of moisture that your engine is exposed to. It’s not unheard of to find insect nests or the occasional bird nesting in some of the worst places (for them and you), this would include your air inlet. Simply blanking the open ports into your engine will guard against this odd occurrence. Remember to position the throttle to closed and idle mixture to “Cut Off”. • Ground running the engine once a month is highly recommended when possible. Condensation is one of the main reasons for the dreaded “C” word (corrosion). Ground running the engine so that operating tempatures are achieved is the best way to burn off any condensation that has

formed or contaminated the engine oil. Remember to verify the magneto switches are in the OFF position and pull the propeller through to guard from hydraulic lock. Note: Bumping the starter is not a recommended procedure! • Between monthly ground runs I recommend nudging or bumping the propeller four to six inches. This is important because the engine utilizes mostly ball and roller bearings. Slightly moving the propeller rotates the balls or rollers so that they are not resting in the same location on the inner or outer bearing race. • Finally in most open-air, tie down, or floats situations I recommend spraying the cylinders with LPS 1 and utilizing a canvas blanket / cover to protect the engine from winter weather elements. Deflecting rain, snow and ice with this method will help protect from moisture accessing the internals of the engine and ignition system.

• Review the Preservation section (Chapter 10) in the Maintenance Manual (P/N 118611) for additional reference material. These six simple steps will help aid in getting a trouble free start up for the next flying season. This procedure is not applicable as a method of long term storage. For those procedures feel free to contact Covington Aircraft Engines!

LIGHT - OVERHAUL 1.) A light overhaul does not increase the value of your engine as a zero TSO will. 2.) A light overhaul on average can make your aircraft worth $150,000.00 less than an aircraft with a zero TSO entry. Today we live in a world market and with the advent of the internet your trade has a good chance of spending its next life in a different country which requires an engine under TBO. 3.) A light overhaul does not address the whole engine, only specific parts that are called out in the work scope. Twenty years ago a light overhaul was called an IRAN, the only difference being that in most shops a IRAN consisted of looking at the whole engine (all of the parts). An IRAN was represented to be just that. Not to politicize the word overhaul, a low cost zero time overhaul consists of using overhauled parts and Pratt & Whitney vendors, as needed, in a low overhead shop where the savings could be passed on. We are a shop that has been overhauling PT6’s for over 30 years and that gives you one price and sticks to it. A light overhaul very seldom meets the advertised price. Remember, if meeting the price was the target, then some needed work would have to be left unaccomplished on a light overhaul. On a zero TSO overhaul every single part of the whole engine has to be addressed and returned to Pratt & Whitney overhaul spec’s. If you need a (Light overhaul?) Turbines, Inc. can do a proper IRAN at lower cost than any other shop. Turbines, Inc. was the very first shop to do IRANS on ag engines starting in 1981. And after more than 30 years, the same mechanics at Turbines, Inc. are doing them today. No disrespect intended, but some of the other shops were not in the PT6 business then and their present day mechanics were not even born yet. 4.) To sum it up, experience equates to lower pricing, better quality of work (safety & reliability), plus you have someone you can call who has operational experience. As a footnote, Turbines, Inc. has had a “137 certificate” since 1986 and operates three “500 gallon -34” airplanes. We understand the language you speak when you call us for advice or need help to get you going again. Most of the mechanics here are war veterans going back to the Vietnam era and are of that work ethic. We have always been known to tell the truth and we consider it a point of honor to stick by our quotes. If all of this raises any questions about light overhauls, IRANS, or Zero time engine overhauls, give me a call any time at 812-877-2587 or my cell phone at 812-249-0364.
