Watch for it AgAir Update is in the final stages of redesigning its web site. Not unlike the dramatic change you witnessed with AgAir Update’s printed version in November of last year, I am in high hopes you will welcome the new AgAir Update web site equally. For the most part, I plan to retain the basic functions of our current web site (www.agairupdate.com), plus add more while enhancing the graphics. The new design calls for a subscribers’-only login page that will open up more information to our readers. Subscriptions will be able to be paid and updated online in a more efficient and secure manner. Classified ads will be manageable, too, allowing changes and updates. Additionally, in the new design is a proposal for an ag-pilot forum. Several years ago during the early years of the Internet, AgAir Update Online had a forum. However, there was always one bad apple that ruined the rest of the apples in the basket. This time we will know who posts and posts will be monitored. I’ll be recruiting forum monitors who in turn will forward me any questionable posts. If I believe a post is inappropriate, it’ll be removed. I simply cannot have posts that are bad mouthing others, including AgAir Update advertisers. The new AgAir Update forum will not
be for opinions. Its primary thesis is for the advancement of ag-aviation and the education of those who read it. Posts should be informative and not ramblings. We’ll see how it goes and if it turns into a nightmare, I’ll take it down. I believe it will work. I think our industry is more mature and Internet savvy and will work to make the forum fulfill its intentions. As part of the revamp of agairupdate. com, my editorials will become my blog. I’m not into writing blogs, or being on Twitter and Facebook. I have way too much to do already. So, my editorial comments will serve as my blog. And besides, who would want to keep up with what Bill Lavender was doing on Twitter or Facebook? As soon as the newly designed web site is available, for those of you that have subscribed to our eEdition, you will receive an eEdition announcing it. Further notification will be in the printed edition of AgAir Update. Along the way, there may be a few bugs in it. So, your patience will be greatly appreciated. At this writing, I’ve completed three trade shows in the southern states and about to leave for cold Montana. Everyone I’ve talked with thus far had a positive, upbeat demeanor and was looking forward to a good season in 2010. There is quite a bit of excitement about
the upcoming NAAA convention to be held in Savannah, Georgia in December 2010. From the various conversations I have had about this, I believe there will be a good turnout. I was surprised at the number of people that have never been to Savannah, what a shame! It is truly a great, southern town with lots of history. Thanks General Sherman for sparing it from your pyromaniac behavior. Assuming you will be in Savannah in 2010, I’d like to strongly suggest you read the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. Visit amazon.com and search for the title to read excerpts. I’m sure you’ll buy it and as a result of reading it, have an even more enjoyable experience in Savannah, Georgia (No, I don’t have a vested interest in the sale of the book). Until next month, Blue Sky and Tailwinds...

ag airmail Thanks I signed up for AgAir Uptate on the recommendation of an old friend, Billy Price, and wanted to thank both of you. Good publication! I grew up in and around ag aviation, flew corporate and did my time with the airlines until being fired by my government because I reached the “retarded” age of 60. But I guess they did me a favor because it will allow me to get back to my first love, ag flying. With the help of several old friends in the business I plan to start my life again. Thought you might enjoy the birthday card I created for an “old cropduster” friend because I could not find one that suited the occasion. Jesse Thompson just turned 70 and is still “killin bugs”.
Thanks again and I will enjoy AgAir Update. Jon D. (JD) McCoy Edgewood, TX jondmccoy@yahoo.com Hello JD; Nice to receive your email and especially Jesse T.’s card, very nicely done. I’d like to request that you give me reprint permission of it, exactly as it is, in AAU? With credit to you, of course. I think, maybe, your hidden talent is poetry and drawing, along with flying! Thanks for the compliments about AgAir Update. I hope you do indeed enjoy reading it. Give my regards to both, Jesse and Billy, known them for a long time.—Bill

Hello Jean; Many thanks for submitting the photos. The Bull Thrush brings back many memories. Although my aircraft was not a Bull Thrush, I did own a Viper conversion Thrush with the R-1820 engine that was also on the “Bull”; quite an aircraft.—Bill

Thought you might like these vintage cropdusting day photos for your website’s photo section. My dad’s Stearmans and Cub in duster/sprayer configuration. Dad’s operation, initially Rice & Neely Cropdusting, later Bootheel Flying Service, was in southeastern Missouri from 1946 to 1980. This photo was likely taken in the late 40s or early 50s. The location is either Senath or Bragg City, Missouri. The Super Cubs and Stearman were used through 1959 when he converted over to 150hp Pawnees (three total) located in Caruth, Missouri. Although a non-spray Cub, it has the Rice & Neely logo. Sorry for the poor color. The old Kodachrome is badly yellowed and I can’t color correct worth a darn. Dad’s primary ag plane from 1946-1959 was a 1941 Stearman that he named Old Suzy, N50091. The photo was taken around 1951-52. The second photo is the same Stearman,
now restored to stock, owned by Bart’s Flying Service of Storm Lake, Iowa. Thanks, Jim Rice Store Maintenance Operations jim.rice@autozone.com
Hello Jim; Thanks so much for sending not only the photos, but the explanation that goes along with them. Dare I say, “Those were the good old days”? Maybe not so much good, but memorable. The restoration of the Stearman is surely befitting for “its” retirement.—Bill
guy wire I am submitting the attached draft article to the NAAA to publish in their magazine as follow-up to the “No Guy Wire Left Behind” contest. I want to personally thank you again for your help in getting this airborne. Please feel free give Lew Blomeley’s winning
design all the glory it deserves. Ron Cline, Chairman NAAA Safety and Reg. Committee Ellensburg, WA cvh@centralvalleyheli.com This is great Ron and will surely credit Mr. Blomeley in the article, with graphics, as submitted. However, one thing I must keep in mind, this is NAAA’s “thunder” and it would not be proper for me to publish this until after NAAA has done so, unless Andrew instructs me otherwise. So, I’m copying Andrew for direction. The soonest I could get it to press without pulling something set to go in the Feb. edition would be the March edition. But, I’ll wait until Andrew tells me when he would prefer. See ya and stay warm,—Bill

Aussies resist wind turbines by Phil Hurst CEO – Aerial Agricultural Association of Australia phil@aerialag.com.au Hope this finds you and yours well and recovering from an enjoyable festive season! Thought I would let you know what’s been happening in Australia over the last few months, as many of the issues are common with what is happening in the US. Sorry for not keeping in touch more in 2009, but it was a busy year on every front... I’ve been following the wind farm issue in the U.S. with interest as we have the same challenges here in Australia. AAAA recently released our revised wind farm policy – along with an accompanying powerline policy – to help regulators, developers and other interested parties know that they have a responsibility and duty of care to aerial application pilots. A copy is attached and is also available from our website – www.aerialag.com.au. Our position is simple – unless the developer can prove by independent assessment that there is no safety or
economic threat to aerial application from the development – then we are opposed. We have communicated this broadly to government agencies, wind farm development companies and others and I thought a little international cooperation may also assist both of our industries. Our federal government also released a national aviation policy just before Christmas, but industry feedback is that it is a case of ‘no meat, no potatoes’. Certainly little in it for aerial application, other than more meetings and work on providing expertise for regulatory ‘reform’. You can find a copy of the policy at http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/ aviation/nap/index.aspx And on the chemical front our regulators have put out a discussion paper on establishing a national scheme for chemical control of use regulation so as to hopefully make it more consistent between our eight states and territories and the Feds – all of whom currently run slightly different regimes... We work as closely as we can with our
regulators and they all recognise our Spraysafe accreditation program for pilot licencing , so hopefully we can achieve greater consistency and perhaps even simplification of requirements. AAAA will be launching our Aerial Application Management System program this year, which covers all regulatory requirements for aerial applicators – including chemicals, dangerous goods, drift, flying, occupational health and safety, industrial, human resources, tax and corporation law – along with risk management, safety and quality assurance systems. We have done all the hard work for operators by developing full risk assessments for all of our legal requirements, as well as writing templates for procedures / checklists, etc. for staff. All modules will be independently audited to gain accreditation. The idea is to simplify evidence of compliance so that regulators will have continued faith in our role as professional aerial applicators and thereby maintain access to chemicals, permit reasonable buffers on label and reduce management
workload. The side benefit of a strong due diligence defence against complaints, prosecutions and civil suits is also useful. I’ll keep you posted on progress. We already have the first group of participants signed up for training and induction. Also, our national convention will be held on the 8th and 9th of June 2010 at the Holiday Inn Surfers Paradise, Queensland. Details will be posted on our website in the next month or so. Hello Phil; No need to apologize, I understand about a busy year. All good here, busy too. I appreciate your update on happenings in Australia, particularly the wind turbines. I’ve copied our Executive Director at NAAA, Andrew Moore and our newly elected NAAA president, Brian Rua. Brian has been actively involved with having to deal with wind turbines in North Dakota. He has written a couple of articles for AAU about this and I’m sure will find your comments of great interest. —Bill

AT-1002A Reno Debut RENO, NV – The Air Tractor AT-1002A single seat agricultural and firefighting aircraft made its first appearance at the 43rd Annual National Agricultural Aviation Association Convention and Exposition in Reno, Nevada. The airplane made its first test flights only days before, on November 25, 2009 according to Leland Snow, Air Tractor company president. Air Tractor Chief Pilot Troy Vaught was at the controls during the test flights and during the seven-hour flight to Reno. He reported the new airplane flew well. The AT-1002A is Leland Snow’s twentieth ag-plane design and is five times as large as his first airplane, the S-1, which was test flown in 1953. A Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67F, 1600 SHP, turbine engine powers the 1002A. The engine turns a 5-blade Hartzell, 118.7inch diameter propeller. The 1002A is the largest aircraft produced by Air Tractor and has a takeoff and landing weight of 20,000 pounds, with a useful load of more than 10,800 pounds. In its aerial firefighting role as a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT), the AT1002A can carry as much as 1,060 U.S.
gallons (4,012 liters) of fire retardant. The fuel tanks hold 521 U.S. gallons. In agricultural spray plane models, the fuel tanks can be blocked off in the field to hold 335 gallons, maximizing the working payload. The 1002A is the “big brother” to the 16,000-pound gross weight AT-802 and 802A, long popular with the aerial spraying and firefighting industries. Since 1993, more than 325 AT-802 series aircraft have been delivered to customers around the world. The AT-802F has become the dominant single engine air tanker in the United States; 77 of the aircraft were contracted for aerial firefighting during the 2009 fire season. “The AT-1002A will be in even greater demand than the AT-802F for firefighting because of two features,” says Leland Snow. “First, with the same fuel load as the 802, the AT-1002A will carry 35 percent more load in the hopper. Second, the fire doors are 56 percent larger than the fire doors on the AT-802F. This allows a much greater coverage level, making the AT-1002A well suited for high fuel content wildfires.” Both the AT-802F and the AT-1002A
are equipped with the new Trotter Controls Generation II Fire Retardant Delivery System (FRDS). This system delivers a precise flow of retardant through the fire gate to provide consistent retardant coverage on the ground. Coverage levels can be set by the pilot, which minimizes retardant waste and increases effectiveness. “The Gen II FRDS has remarkable diagnostic features that allow the pilot to quickly determine what has gone wrong if there is trouble. It also has several levels of redundancy to assure the fire doors open and close when activated,” adds Snow. “We believe that the AT-1002A will become the ‘world’s firefighting airplane,’ because no other purposebuilt firefighting airplane can carry a thousand gallons of retardant, drop it with computer-controlled consistency and accuracy, and offer this kind of operating cost efficiency,” states Snow. According to Snow, FAA certification of the AT-1002A is expected before the end of 2010. The initial production rate for the AT-1002A will be about 12 aircraft, or about one a month. Snow added that demand for the new aircraft may well

GE Aviation’s turboprop business takes off in 2009 EVENDALE, OHIO — Since GE’s acquisition in mid-2008, GE Aviation Czech s.r.o., formerly known as Walter Engines, has been busy --- launching a new engine, being selected to power a new aircraft, receiving a Czech grant and expanding its services and support network. Eighteen months ago, GE Aviation
acquired certain assets of Walter Engines, a Czech Republic-based manufacturer of small turboprop engines and high precision machined parts for the aviation industry. Renamed GE Aviation Czech, the business has made great strides. Among the highlights: • New facility and test cells: GE Aviation

Czech moved to a 135,000 square-foot facility in Prague in earlier 2009. The facility includes CNC machining centers, EDM and NDT capabilities and a new surfacetreatment plant. The most recent addition includes three new automated engine test cells for development, certification and serial production acceptance testing of turboprop engines. About 400 employees work at the new facility. • H80 engine launch: Immediately after the acquisition, GE launched the H80 turboprop engine, which will produce up to 800 shaft horsepower (shp) to power utility, agriculture and business and general aviation aircraft. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable turboprop engine with significantly enhancing hot-day takeoff performance and high-altitude cruise speeds. The H80 engine will also feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours and 6,600 cycles between overhauls. Component testing as well as aeromechanical and performance testing are underway. The first engine to test will begin running in the first quarter of this year with certification expected in mid-2010. • H80-powered Thrush 510: At EAA 2009 in Oshkosh, Thrush Aircraft selected the H80 engine to power an improved version of its 510-gallon, 10,500-pounds gross weight Thrush aerial applicator (crop duster). The H80-powered Thrush 510 is expected to enter service this summer. At NBAA, Thrush and GE announced the H80-powered Thrush 510 launch customer,
a joint venture between Boschung Global AG and Inter Sinex AG of Switzerland. The venture plans to operate the aircraft in Kazakhstan, which is the world’s seventh largest producer of grains and a major exporter of wheat. • Power 90 and Smyrna Air Center designations: Also announced at Oshkosh, GE Aviation named the Power 90 as the GE Preferred Engine Conversion for the King 90 aircraft and Smyrna Air Center as a GE Designated Engine Installer for the Walter M601E engine on King Air 90 aircraft. Smyrna Air Center of Smyrna, Tennessee, holds the rights to the Power 90 conversion Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). Power 90 is an FAA-approved STC conversion for King Air 90, A90, B90 and C90 aircraft in which the original engines are replaced with the more powerful 751 shaft-horsepower (shp) Walter M601E-11A engines. The E-11A engine delivers faster rates of climb, higher flight levels, faster cruise speed than current engines and lower acquisition and maintenance costs compared with competing conversions. • Cascade Aircraft Conversions engine purchase agreement: During the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) annual meeting last month, Cascade Aircraft Conversions signed a formal agreement to purchase M601E-11 and M601D-11 engines from GE for its engine conversion STCs on Thrush and Air Tractor 300, 400 and 500 series aircraft. The engine conversion benefits include lower acquisition and maintenance costs with no fuel nozzles, no hot section inspections, no engine teardown in a wire strike event and improved hot and high performance. • Premier Turbines repair center designation: GE Aviation also announced at NAAA the selection of Premier Turbines as its Designated Repair Center in North and South Americas for M601 and H80 engines. Premier Turbines will offer heavy repair services, exchange engines and
rentals, line replacement unit rotable pools and field service support to all existing and future M601 and H80 engines in the Americas region. GE Aviation will provide the necessary OEM parts to meet Premier Turbines’ needs. Premier Turbines will be ready to accept M601 engines for repair in the first quarter of 2010. • Czech research grant: The Czech Government awarded research grants valued at about $4 million USD (70 million CZK) to GE Aviation Czech. The grants will assist GE Aviation Czech in incorporating advanced technologies into its existing Walter M601 series engines to reshape the landscape of turboprop aviation. These research grants were the first grants GE Aviation has received from the Czech Government. GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of commercial and military jet engines and components as well as integrated digital, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft. GE Aviation also has a global service network to support these offerings. “The quality of the close air support we provide is directly related to the quality of the ground support we receive.” Our Commanding Officer posted these words in our maintenance control section as a reminder that the success of the mission rested as firmly on our enlisted shoulders as it did on the shoulders of the officers who would take those aircraft into battle. I believe that those words ring true in ag aviation just as they did in Marine Corps Aviation; if the guy on the ground isn’t well versed and well trained, those short comings will have a direct and perhaps dire effect on the outcome of the mission. Not a single flight goes out that isn’t dependant, in one way or another, on the efforts of the ground crew; loaders, mechanics, spotters, secretaries, all those who drag the hoses, fix the squawks, maintain the trucks and wade through
Every flight starts and ends on the ground rivers of paperwork. All the folks who work diligently under sometimes less than ideal circumstances in order to get those aircraft and their pilots in the air so that they can do what they were meant to do, and do it to the maximum effectiveness of their capabilities. Having a good, reliable, well-trained ground crew not only increases productivity, but also enhances safety. People who know their jobs well and who are educated in all aspects of the operation, from beginning to end, will have a much better understanding, and a vested interest, in what they do. Mistakes are more likely identified as the work progresses if all hands involved have a

good grasp of what is required, often times before they become problems. Two sets of eyes are always better and three or four are even better than that. Fostering among the crew a sense of progression and accomplishment builds cohesion within the unit. A pilot or operator is benefiting himself, his people and the bottom line if his crew is bolstered from the ground up with good training, good personnel and good equipment. On the same note, having a ground crew that is inept, sloppy or careless, not only endangers them, but also the equipment and the mission as a whole. Here in the world of ag aviation, most of us pilots have spent a season or two “in the trenches”, so to speak, learning and earning our way into that first coveted seat. It is a style of industrial inner-promotion that is designed to ensure a continuity of knowledge and experiences. Most of the guys I know who man the mix tanks and hook up the hoses don’t know what it’s like in the seat of that airplane, and that’s okay, but the pilot who doesn’t know and appreciate what happens on the other side of that load hose won’t understand one of the most vital elements of his own job. Any pilot, no matter how experienced, whether permanent or seasonal, should establish a good working relationship with his ground crew. A pilot should show a sense of trust and respect for those who support him. He should also be deserving of the same in return. Most people who man the ground positions in an ag flying operation are local folks who are considered as close as family by those who employ them. It would not be good for a seasonal pilot to be sent home in the middle of a busy corn run because he could not get along with his ground crew. It has happened. Mistreating those who keep you in the air won’t keep you in the air for very long.
Here in my little piece of the world, I am very fortunate to have a ground crew that is as dedicated and capable as any you will find. As a pilot, I am confident that when I climb into that airplane, I can concentrate on doing the job at hand. I don’t have to devote so much of my already limited mental capacity to worrying about the myriad of things that have to happen before the throttle goes forward or the spray handle goes down. Of course all these things must be considered and confirmed, but I can tell you that it sure is nice to know the load being pumped into the hopper is correct, the tail wheel has plenty of grease, the annual inspection wasn’t pencil whipped and those guys outside the cockpit are just as concerned as doing a good job as I am. The ag aviation business is one of many variables and very often conditions and requirements can change right before your eyes. Having a crew that can think on their feet, who are ready and adaptable to circumstances and who are professional in their tasks, goes a long way in mitigating those variables so that the end result and the mission as whole will have the desired outcome. Every flight begins and ends on the ground. If our ground support is lacking, it will certainly show in the results we get from the air. We rely heavily on our ground crews. They are an integral component of our industry without which the pilot’s job would be exceedingly difficult. Pilots and ground crewmen are dependent on one another. It is an air-ground team that gets the acres sprayed. It is a system that works pretty darn well, but one that can’t be taken for granted. After all, isn’t ag-flying just another form of close air support?

FAA expands cylinder AD The FAA is superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for Lycoming Engines (formerly Textron Lycoming) models 320, 360, and 540 series, ‘‘Parallel Valve’’ reciprocating engines, with certain Engine Components, Inc. (ECi) cylinder assemblies, part number (P/N) AEL65102 series ‘‘Titan,’’ installed. That AD currently requires initial and repetitive visual inspections and compression tests to detect cracks at the head-to-barrel interface, replacement of cylinder assemblies found cracked, and replacement of certain cylinder assemblies at new, reduced times-in-service. This AD requires the same actions, but for an expanded population of cylinder assemblies. This AD results from reports of 10 additional cylinder head separations since issuing AD 2008-19-05, on cylinder serial numbers not listed in that AD. We are issuing this AD to prevent loss of engine power due to cracks at the head-to-barrel interface and possible engine failure caused by separation of a cylinder head, which could result in loss of
control of the aircraft. This AD becomes effective February 4, 2010. The FAA estimates this AD will affect about 18,000 ECi cylinder assemblies installed in aircraft of U.S. registry. The visual inspection and compression tests will take about 4 work-hours for each engine. An individual cylinder replacement will require $1,100 for parts and 6 work-hours. Lycoming engines with a set of 4 ECi cylinders will require 12 work-hours for the cylinder replacement. Lycoming engines with a set of 6 ECi cylinders will require 16 work-hours for the cylinder replacement. The FAA estimates 18 percent of the affected population of cylinders will be replaced and the estimated total cost of the AD to U.S. operators to be $10,172,000. The estimate is exclusive of any possible warranty coverage. For more information contact: Peter Hakala, Aerospace Engineer, special certification office, FAA, Rotorcraft Directorate, peter.w.hakala@faa.gov; telephone 817-222-5145; fax 817-222-5785.

Review your billing system to ensure a profit There are many ways to charge for aviation services. Some billing methods combine different types of charges to determine the final bill. Some possibilities include: $/Statute Mile, $/Nautical Mile, $/Take Off, $/ Landing, $/Day, $/Elapsed Time, $/ Flying Hour, $/seat, $/Trip, $/excursion, $ for positioning, $/Statute Mile or Nautical Mile for deadhead, $/acre, $/ pound, $ for excess ferry distance, $ charge for small patches, $ charge for spot treatment, $/load, $/Flying Hour fuel surcharge, etc. Charges may differ depending on the type terrain, weather, day, night, or other special conditions. The type operation usually determines the conventional method of billing. Regardless of the billing method used, the end result must produce revenue greater than expenses in order to stay in business. Does the way you charge produce a profit? Making a profit requires the total
billings to be greater than all the fixed expenses plus the variable expenses created by the hourly operation of the aircraft. How do you evaluate your billing system? Accurately evaluating your billing system requires determining what billing system produces the ROI (Return On Investment) you seek to achieve. Calculating your ROI requires projecting cash flow from the time you purchased the aircraft through the time you sell the aircraft. Discussion of this method requires using a computer financial model and will be deferred to a future article. To get you started on evaluating your billing system, I suggest the old fashion way; use paper and pencil to perform the steps below. Review your expenses over the last several years for each aircraft you operate. Review each extraordinary expense separately and prorate the
“Where Quality and Customer Service are First Priority.”
total expense so that it makes sense to project an annual fixed or variable hourly expense amount as appropriate. Determine a total annual fixed expense and variable hourly expense for projection purposes. Review your revenue over the same time period. Determine the average revenue per hour for the total number of hours flown during the time period reviewed. The number of hours flown should include flying hours due to maintenance trips, test flights, training, positioning, etc. The hours flown when no revenue was collected should be included in the total hours flown because you pay when the aircraft is flown for any reason. Add the total annual fixed and variable expenses (for the annual hourly utilization) to determine the total annual expenses. Divide the total annual expenses by the annual hours flown to calculate your average cost per hour.
Compare your average revenue per hour to your average cost per hour. Hopefully, the average hourly revenue is greater than the average hourly cost. Now you have a quick picture of the net on an hourly basis. To improve your profit, you should cost out each job. Determine which jobs produce profits and which jobs produce losses. At the completion of each job, divide the revenue received by the hours flown. If the revenue per hour collected is not greater than your average cost per hour then you need to evaluate the billing system for your services. By immediately costing out each job, you will quickly determine a profitable billing system. AircraftCostAnalysis can be used to determine the after-tax ROI that was mentioned earlier. See www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com for the details.

Something else to consider I have just returned from the latest NAAA convention and exposition and I honestly think it may have been one of the best that I have ever attended. Furthermore, the two Compass Rose sessions were also the best, especially the last one on Thursday morning, in which there were by my estimate between 90 and 100 attendees. Topics discussed were invaluable to everyone, and not just the novices and soon-to-bes. Even an old timer (real old timer) like me heard something for the first time. It’s kinda like the old
cliché “can’t see the trees for the forest.” This is something that I always knew in the back of my head, but never really stopped to analyze it. And it is exactly this: every time a pilot takes off with a load, he / she is carrying something besides a hopper full of fertilizer, seeds, or pesticide. He/she is carrying the operators reputation! During this session of the Compass Rose, the question was raised, “Has any operator ever had a farmer call you on the phone and make a comment like this

WE DO GOOD WORK!
(I am paraphrasing but not exaggerating), “I don’t know who that pilot was spraying my wheat that you sent out here, but if you ever send him again I will just have to go to another ag operator.” And the truth is, I did receive a call exactly like that and that is when you have a very serious decision to make. And it is not a “cookie-cutter” decision. There are a lot of circumstances and conditions which will weigh in on your response. This situation is all the more important when hiring a new ag pilot. There are a lot more aspects than the new ag pilot’s flying abilities. There are several personal characteristics to be considered, but that is not the point of this dissertation. What is to be considered here is, is this new pilot skillful enough to do the farmer a good job without trying to prove his machismo by pushing on the edge of the safe and common sense envelope? And, will he bring your airplane home in the same shape it was when he took off. Maybe it would be good idea to call the farmer, especially if he is a particularly good customer and tell him that you have a new ag pilot that you consider to be a good pilot and comes with the recommendation of the ag aviation school from which he just completed. Ask if he

would mind if you sent him to make this application on his crop? You may suggest that the farmer observe the application. It may not be a good idea to tell the pilot that the farmer will be observing him. It should go without saying that you send this new ag pilot to an easy field and that you spend extra time with him/ her explaining exactly how you and other pilots have been flying the field. One other thing that I would like to touch on and this comes from, a bad experience. Pay particular attention to the possibility of a drinking problem. Even if the pilot can “fly the wings off of an airplane”, this sort of situation can destroy your airplane, his life, your reputation and give to you and his family big time stress. When you are considering hiring a new ag pilot, he should not object to your grilling him along these lines. If he does, you may need to “read between the lines!” Well, as mentioned earlier, this is one of those topics that is so glaring and so obvious, that in my opinion, often times does not get the attention that is demanded. And so, as always, be safe, have fun, make money and give a new ag pilot a chance to prove him/herself. It may be one of the best moves you’ve made.

Ag-aviation accident rate improves in 2009 by Bill Lavender The following statistics, taken from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records, indicate trends in ag-aviation accidents during 2009. It should be noted there has been no
factoring for the number of hours flown in each type aircraft, as there is no way to know this information, which can easily askew any assumptions. The number of ag-aviation accidents in 2009 decreased by 14 from 2008’s
97 and still less by nine than 2007’s 92, but more than 2006’s 69. 2009’s fatality rate of seven was similar to the two previous years’ eight, better than 2006’s 10 and half of 2005’s 14. Typically, most accidents occur in

May, June, July and August. These are the double-digit months for accident numbers in 2009, like in 2008 and 2007. The rest of the months of 2009 were in the very low single digits. In 2009, July and August tied for the most accidents with 17 each. The other two double-digit months were 13 for May and 12 for June. This is a pretty good indication of when the season started to heat up. There was less corn spraying in some areas, so these numbers could be reflecting that fact. The number of accidents in the major corn raising states, where lots of flying occurs in a very short time period, were only 12 total in Illinois and Iowa and none in Indiana. Again in 2009, like in 2008, California took the national lead with nine accidents. Iowa came in second with eight accidents, while Arkansas, Mississippi and Georgia tied with five accidents each. Illinois and Louisiana had four accidents each. Idaho, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin had three accidents each. Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada and Oregon had two accidents each. Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, South Carolina and South
Dakota had one accident each. Other states with ag-aviation operations did not report any accidents. The Air Tractor led the way this year with 33% (24) of the accidents. This should come as no surprise, since it represents the majority of the agaircraft in use. What should be a surprise, and proves to be every year, is the Ag-Cat accident rate was second with 16% (12). In 2009, helicopter accidents came in third with 15% (11), while Thrush accidents were fourth with 14% (10), followed by Cessna C-188s with 11% (8). The rest of the ag-accidents were single digit with the Piper Pawnee (all types) at 5% (4), the Dromader at 4% (3) and the Weatherly at 1% (1). Every type of agplane flying, except the Eagle, had an accident. (Percentages were rounded.) Take a look at the single digit rate of ag-aircraft accidents. There are probably less Pawnee, Dromader, Weatherly, and surely the Eagle, agplanes operating than any other type ag-aircraft. As should be expected, these aircrafts’ accident rates are lower. It now becomes obvious, to really make any qualified assumptions, the number and type of ag-aircraft and
the number of hours each type of aircraft flies in a season are critical numbers that are missing from the NTSB reports. Thus, all assumptions are simply that, assumptions. Take note of the number of helicopter accidents with 15% (11). This is probably a bit more than it should be, since an assumption would be helicopters make up less than 10% of all U.S. ag-flying.

You just can’t win at this guessing game. Most operators buy ag-planes for reasons other than safety; reasons such as price, availability and productivity. Besides, relatively speaking, ag-planes are inherently crashworthy. We pilots need to keep them out of the trees and wires. We need to be sure they have adequate fuel while flying them. We need to think before we fly, not after the fact. It is a welcome relief to see the fatalities number one less than 2008’s eight and much less than the 14 in 2005. Now that this number has finally gotten into the single digits for three consecutive years, every effort should be made to target zero fatalities during a good spraying year. The good news is accidents are lower in the past several years from the traditional 150+ accidents and 15+ fatalities in pre-PAASS years. American ag-pilots are flying smarter due to participating in the PAASS program. Awareness is key. It allows for the education spoon to feed. Fatal accidents, and accidents in general, should be studied more closely, especially when almost half of the accidents in 2009 were non-mechanical
(That could mean pilot error.) In 2008 that percentage was 64%. 2009 was a significant improvement. All pilots should be extra careful in 2010, making it the best year yet with the lowest number of accidents and fatalities. Zero accidents equates to zero fatalities.

spreading the facts
about STFs We are each aware of the need to get out the “Good” word about pesticides and aerial applications. But it appears we are preaching to the choir, ourselves! Although, much progress is being made with the school programs teaching kids about ag aviation. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the American population is urban. Therefore many probably aren’t getting our message. Most ag applicators simply do not have the time or expertise to address civic clubs and preach on-the-stump about our industry. But there is a way to make a difference. At AAU we have developed an idea that each of us can participate in with little or no effort and yet make an impact on Americans nationwide. Every newspaper is always looking for newsworthy and interesting information they can publish with minimum effort, i.e. no reporter or research costs. Submissions with reprint permission always generate interest. With the “Spreading The Facts” section in AAU, you can copy and mail, email or fax to your newspaper positive information everybody else needs to know that we already know! It will be reprinted in multiple newspapers educating the public with “Spreading The Facts” about ag aviation and pesticides. • Photocopy/cut and paste it • Mail, email or fax it to newspaper. Put newspaper’s fax number in machine’s speed dial, email address in “recipients”. • Educate the public! Reprint permission given by AgAir Update - an international agricultural aviation publication

Bill Gates bets a billion on ag research CHURCHVILLE, VA—“Environmentalists are standing in the way of feeding humanity through their opposition to biotechnology, farm chemicals and nitrogen fertilizer”— straight talk from billionaire Bill Gates at the World Food Prize Symposium in Des Moines October 15th Gates could have said with equal truth that the same environmentalists, by demanding organic-only farming, are risking the future of the planet’s wildlife. The world will need more than twice as much food by 2050 to feed a peak population of 8 billion affluent humans and their pets. Gates believes we should get that additional food from higher yields on the 37 percent of the earth’s land area we already farm, not by threatening massive numbers of wildlife species by clearing more land for low-yield crops. Gates has thus delivered the most important speech on food and the world’s future since Dr. Norman Borlaug accepted his 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. Borlaug’s “miracle wheat” had made him the symbol of the original Green Revolution, which tripled yields on the world’s best cropland through scientific research after 1960. Dr. Borlaug spent the last years of his amazing life trying to extend the Green Revolution to Africa and many farming regions with marginal lands, where today more than one billion people try to feed their families with hunting and slash-and-burn farming. Now, Gates has committed more than $1 billion of his personal fortune
to improving crop yields in Africa and marginal farming regions. He announced in Des Moinesanother $120 million in gifts for additional farm productivity research, including support for drought-tolerant corn and pest-resistant sweet potatoes. Until this moment, Gates had not spoken out on the use of biotech and chemicals to continue raising world crop yields. Britain’s Royal Society has also just produced a study, Reaping the Benefits: Science and the Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture. Led by Dr. David Baulcombe, this report also concludes that biotech crops are one of the technologies urgently needed to avoid a global food crisis. The eco-activists have claimed that organic-only farming could provide all the food needed—but only if humanity became vegetarian. Otherwise, there’s a severe global shortage of cow manure and “extra” land and water to plant vastly more nitrogen-fixing green manure crops. However, history tells us that only a tiny percent of humans voluntarily choose to be vegetarian. The Center for Global Food Issues and the reports of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology say even going vegetarian wouldn’t save enough land from the plow. More research must be brought to the farms in the coming decades to avoid wildlife disaster. The saving grace to date is that we’ve farmed the best land, which had large numbers of a few species; expanding onto the poor soils will threaten
huge numbers of species. Ironically, another speaker at the World Food Prize Symposium—economist Jeffrey Sachs who directs the Earth Institute at Columbia University—criticized agriculture as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Sachs, of course, was implying that either the world’s people must somehow sharply cut back on food and manufacturing, or cut human numbers by some enormous percentage. It was an ironic reminder that the first Green Revolution lost its momentum after its funding from the Rockefeller Foundation had been drastically cut back. Ethicist Garrett Hardin tells us that Allan Gregg, a Rockefeller vice president, was one of the first to refer to population growth as “a cancer on the earth.” The government agencies that took over support for the international agricultural research network after Rockefeller dropped it have not been able to stand up to the political clout of the green movement. Once again private philanthropy may provide the final step toward a world of adequately fed people and abundant wild-lands, as it did during the first Green Revolution. DENNIS T. AVERY is an environmental economist and senior fellow for the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. He was formerly a senior analyst for the Department of State. RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – When faced with the challenge of preparing for next year’s crop, weed control planning done now can help growers get the most out of next year’s acre. This planning includes the aerial application of three products in the Kixor family from BASF; Integrity, Optill and Sharpen. Each of these products carry an aerial application label that permits water volume rates starting at three gallons per acre. Planning Tip #1 – Modify your weed control program Weeds are still a grower’s No.1 enemy, bringing losses of around $95 billion a year in lost global food production. As the 2009 season comes to an end, now is an excellent time for growers to identify their weed control challenges and modify their weed control program for cleaner fields in 2010.
“Growers looking back on their 2009 season may note an increasing trend of more difficult to control broadleaf weeds and realize they need to make changes to their control program,” said Dr. Dan Westberg, BASF Technical Marketing Manager. New solutions, like the recently introduced Kixor® herbicide technology from BASF, are designed to control the toughest broadleaf weed control challenges facing growers today. The family of products powered by Kixor recently received federal registration by the Environmental Protection Agency, and will be available this spring in most states. Planning Tip #2 – Start with a clean field “Crops typically grow slowly in the spring due to cool, wet conditions making it a prime time for early
emerging weeds to take over and threaten the crop’s ability to get firmly established,” said Westberg. “Treating early with a herbicide that offers fast, complete burndown, like a product in the Kixor family, means growers are able to control those weeds before they can threaten yield potential.” Research published by Ohio State University in 2003 clearly demonstrates the need for treating early to protect crops. In corn, results show that weeds as little as four inches tall have the potential to cause a 4.5 bushel-per-acre yield loss. According to Westberg, certain weeds, like glyphosate-resistant marestail, must be controlled prior to emergence of some crops, such as soybean, where effective in-crop postemergence options are lacking. Failure to get complete burndown of marestail in soybean may result in a mess for the rest of

the season. Growers can control troublesome broadleaf weeds with preplant burndown applications using Kixor herbicide technology before they begin competing for valuable nutrients and threatening a grower’s yield potential. Planning Tip #3 – Efficiently manage your risk and operation Making sure a herbicide provides both rapid burndown and residual control is another step growers can take to control resistant weeds and manage their fields more efficiently. With Kixor herbicide, growers can expect control of tough

broadleaf weeds three-to-five times faster than glyphosate and 2,4-D, allowing growers to plant quicker and manage their fields more effectively. “Growers are very particular about having clean fields. Kixor helps control weeds fast and leaves the fields looking clean, so growers can be confident and proud of the way they manage their farm,” said Westberg. While rapid burndown can mean controlling weeds at a faster rate, using a herbicide such as Kixor that also provides residual control gives growers the peace of mind of knowing they have some level of protection in their field. This protection means fewer in-season postemergence applications that have to be timed around wind, rain and other scheduling conflicts. “The rapid burndown and residual control offered by Kixor helps growers manage their fields more effectively and efficiently for a better return on investment,” said Westberg. “These are all benefits that growers may miss without a strong, early weed control program that includes an effective herbicide.” As planning begins for growers to get the most out of every acre next season,

Returning Board members include Richie Crockett, owner of Devil Dusters, Inc. in New Mexico, and Doug Johnson, owner of Johnson Aero and Mid State Aviation, Inc. in Nebraska. The PROAIR Risk Retention Group, Inc. Board of Directors consists of Ronny Rogers, owner of Garland Agviation in Arkansas, Troy Winch, Vice-President and Director of Captive Insurance for Risk Services, LLC, as well as Tim Steier, Trevor Edwards, and Amy Allen. Steier, who was elected Chairman / President of both groups, commented, “Our industry has reached a high level of professionalism, indicated by the
reduction of accidents and fatalities. The camaraderie and training we are doing, in programs like PAASS, tells me together we can accomplish tremendous savings to our industry. Examples of this are found in the 12-year insurance program the Canadian Aerial Association enacted. I am confident that our program with PARMA and PROAIR will be as successful.” Trevor Edwards stated, “I’m proud to serve on these Boards alongside an industry leader like Leland Snow, top insurance managers, and respected ag operators. I think their broad base of experience and knowledge will benefit our group as we move forward.” One of the most important bylaw changes approved by members at the meeting was the removal of the assessment provision. Edwards said, “This change was already approved by our regulators in the Nevada Division of Insurance, and it means that in the event
of a loss members will not be assessed any money beyond their premium and capital contribution already in the company. Edwards continued, “We’re excited to enter our third year in business. We’ve had one year with no claims, and one year in which a tornado totaled a member’s aircraft, along with a couple of smaller claims. We were able to pay these claims promptly and in full, without the hassles that operators sometimes experience in dealing with traditional insurance companies.” “We’ve also received great support and
a vote of confidence from our reinsurers during a recent trip to London,” said Edwards, “They said that even though PROAIR and PROAIR RRG are new companies starting business in a soft insurance market, they can see the potential for our growth and success, and they look forward to a long-term partnership.” For more information contact Trevor Edwards at 800-717-7504 or visit the website www.proairrrg.com.

The mark of antichrist “He (the false prophet) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Revelation 13:16-17). The Greek word “charagma” translated into our English word “mark,” is also used in Acts 17:29 where it is translated into the English world “graven,” talking about the idols of worldly people. The original Greek words of verse 16 could easily be translated “causes all… to give themselves a mark.” It is a picture of earthly minded people eagerly wanting this mark to continue doing business in their earthly minded ways. Worldliness is so ingrained into the human mind that it is a way of life for most of humanity—even for many professing Christians.
All of Paul’s, Peter’s, James’, and John’s epistles were written to Christians, and they all have strong warnings against greed and loving the things of this world. You might fool yourself and others into thinking you can serve money and God, but you can’t fool God. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters…you cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). People become slaves to their earthly desires, “For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him” (2 Peter 2:19). John wrote, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him…The world and its desires will pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:15-17). Just before He destroys this world’s commercial system, God warns His people, “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any
of her plagues” (Revelation 18:4). “Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666” (Revelation 13:18). There have been many ideas of what will be used to put this mark of Antichrist on earthly minded people. It will probably be some kind of electronic device or computer chip, but we really don’t know— it’s all guesswork. There is nothing in the Bible that tells us how this mark is going to be placed on those who will accept it. This mark will be a part of the worldwide monitoring system that will come into place during Antichrist’s rule on this earth. Monitoring systems such as NSA, Project Echelon, Menwith Hill, Project P415 are all a part of the world monitoring systems in place today. These systems monitor most of the electronic communication systems
on planet earth. When Antichrist comes along he will take control of these systems and use them to control everything that God will allow him to control on planet earth. It will be extremely hard to hide from Antichrist’s control during the last three and one-half years of the tribulation. “No one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” Those who control the worldwide surveillance system in existence during the last part of the tribulation will essentially say, “You either worship Antichrist or starve,” and there will be no exceptions. Many of those who refuse the mark will die of starvation, disease, or be killed by Antichrist’s worshipers. People who think that they can store up food and other supplies to outsmart Antichrist and his surveillance system are only fooling themselves. In

London cameras are everywhere, and it is getting that way in many American cities. Cameras in satellites and aircraft can see many of the things we do, and listening devices are more common than we would like to think. There will be millions of people who will take the mark of the beast because the things of this world are their gods; they don’t realize that greed is idol worship (Colossians 3:5). “If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand he, too, will drink of the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of His wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb” (Revelation 14:9-10). “The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly and painful sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped his image” (Revelation 16:2). This is God’s judgment on everyone who takes the mark of Antichrist, because in doing so they have pledged their allegiance to Antichrist, and rejected Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus said, “I tell you, whoever acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who
disowns Me before men will be disowned before the angels of God…If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels” (Luke 12:8-9, Mark 8:38). Ever since John wrote the book of Revelation there have been many people who have named dozens of people as the Antichrist—and they have all been wrong. Because the Greek and Hebrew alphabet are also used as numbers, there have been hundreds of attempts to discover who Antichrist is by using some sort of numerical system. People have twisted words and letters around to prove their point—and they have all been wrong. If you manipulate words and letters around enough you can make almost anyone the antichrist with this numerical system. Who Antichrist is, or what his mark will be, is irrelevant to a person who has Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and lives their life to please Him. Paul wrote, “We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus…Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39). The destruction of Antichrist and the False Prophet next time.

Women-run ag-operation in Colombia Mrs. Sandra Valle, executive vice president of Calima Fumigacion, Uraba Colombia
by Robert McCurdy robertMcCurdy@agairupdate.com During a recent training visit to Colombia, I had the pleasure to work with Calima Fumigacion. I was very impressed with the entire operation, from the office personnel, to the line and the
maintenance crew, to the pilots. Based in Uraba, Colombia, the name “Calima” is taken from an Indian tribe located near Cali. It may very well be the most smoothly run, organized agricultural aerial application operation I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of very good
operations. Calima Fumigacion gives new meaning to the old cliché, “Runs like a Singer sewing machine.” There are six, 510 S2R-T34 Turbo Thrushes, one S2R Thrush and five Cessna 188s. All airplanes are equipped with VHF radios. The Turbo Thrushes are equipped with 60 stainless steel CP nozzles with stainless steel CP check valves, SATLOC M3 GPS and IntelliFlow flow control units. The Turbo Thrushes typically carry 450 gallons per takeoff, the Cessnas carry 170 gallons and the S2R carries about 300 gallons. Three of the Cessnas are based at another location. The line maintenance crew consists of PT6A-34 mechanics, airframe and GPS specialist, fuelers, spraying system personnel and an army of extras to help
wherever needed. The line personnel wear safety equipment that includes ear protection, rubber aprons, boots, gloves and hard hats. There is a painted yellow and black stripe on the flight line, which very clearly delineates the “Do Not Cross” zone that no one except authorized personnel may cross when flight operations are in progress. The flight line crew stays busy, as you may expect, with seven to nine airplanes in the air at one time, all spraying five gpa over large banana plantations within 15 miles of the base in Uraba. I was shown one banana field of more than 2,000 acres. Mr. and Mrs. Valle founded Calima Fumigacion in 1964. Mr. Valle, an ag pilot, was a visionary who, in 1965, brought the first Cessna 188

to Colombia and then in 1982 the first Turbo Thrush. Today, Mrs. Valle is president and owner of the company, while her daughter, Sandra Valle, the executive vice-president of the company, oversees day-to-day operations. Sandra’s sister, Viviandra, is the company’s purchasing agent and lives in Miami, Florida. There is a wonderful rapport among the pilots, Sandra and her mother. Incidentally, all three women have a thorough working knowledge of the ag-flight ops and the SATLOC M3 GPS. Each morning before the airplanes take off, Sandra walks out on the flight line to observe the loading and fueling of each airplane. It is a morning ritual for her and, of course, it tells the pilots that she has a personal interest and concern for each one of them. Calima Fumigacion is located very close to the Equator. As the outside air temperature approaches 90°F, the banana leaves begin to close preventing the fungicide from doing its job. When this happens flight ops have to be stopped. Then, each aircraft is thoroughly washed. The wash water is collected in special containers, run through a decontamination process and returned to nature in an environmentally friendly way. All airplanes are maintained to like new, showroom condition. The pilots wear Nomex flight suits and gloves, flight boots and helmets. The flight assignments are made the night before. There is an informal pilot meeting every morning at 0530. Pilots and planes are airborne shortly thereafter. Special assignments among the pilots include, Chief Pilot, Training/Instructor Pilot and Safety Pilot. I visited Calima Fumigacion to conduct a safety seminar and to offer new

ideas regarding spraying techniques. It was a genuine pleasure and huge learning experience for me, as well as to observe their operation and to get to know Mrs. Valle, Sandra, Viviandra, the office personnel, the line personnel and especially the pilots, for whom I hold the utmost respect and admiration.

Hydrogem –A new technology for aerial application by Alan McCracken mccrackenalan@yahoo.com Ariel Orlando Destefano Hydrogem is a new glycerin-based additive that is under development in Brazil that shows great promise in improving the efficiency of the aerial application of agrochemicals. This product has been developed from approximately 10% of the by-products from the production of biodiesel that otherwise would be wasted. It presents an excellent alternative to more expensive mineral or vegetable oils as a vehicle for low volume applications. This is of great significance since the product is being produced in very large volumes in biodiesel production and these volumes present major disposal problems. Furthermore, Hydrogem is a natural product easily mixable with water and biodegradable in addition to having low volatility that assists in reducing evaporation and improving deposition of the spray droplets. It has been registered with the Ministry of Agriculture in Brazil. Field tests in 2007/2008 have confirmed that the product improves spray deposition especially so when added to spray solutions that are applied at low volumes of 5 -10 liters/ ha [0.5 – 1.0 gpa] for the control of pests and diseases in a range of crops including soybeans, corn and cotton. The patent holder, Ariel Orlando Destéfano, has been conducting research since 2005 with respect to the utilization of biodiesel residues in agriculture. In the year 2007, a
production facility was installed on the property of one of the largest soybean growers in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil for their own consumption. A total of 800,000 liters [211,000 gallons] have been sprayed via aerial and ground applications in low spray volumes to increase operational capacity and to reduce costs. After advanced discussions, it is expected an agreement will be signed with a major company in the soybean business in Brazil for the production of large quantities specifically for low volume spraying. Other companies have registered products containing 93% glycerin as anti-evaporates, however, this product is notably different since it contains organic adhesives, other elements and additives that have the effect of stimulating photosynthesis. Glycerol is an organic compound, also commonly called glycerin or glycerine. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. Glycerol has three hydrophilic hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature. The glycerol substructure is a central component of many lipids. Glycerol is sweet-tasting and of low toxicity. The trials in Brazil that have been conducted during the past two seasons have confirmed Hydrogem can be used as an effective spray additive. Furthermore, the product also shows promise in increasing the absorption rate of agrochemicals. The only

inconvenient aspect has been the need to reduce the level of Hydrogem with some herbicides to avoid phytotoxicity. The product has shown to be a drift reducing agent, thanks to its density of 1.26 and an anti-evaporate with a boiling point of 290ºC [554°F]. Tests have shown that evaporation
losses were reduced to less than 0.5% with concentrations of 5% of the spray solution. Hydrogem works as a sticker, stimulant for the penetration, absorption of agricultural chemicals and sequestration of cations.

More than just a shop by Bill Lavender There are numerous ag-plane maintenance facilities throughout the U.S. Most are pretty good shops working on high-use ag-aircraft. Depending on the type of work needed, the shops typically have a geographic limitation, servicing aircraft in a defined region. So, how does a really good shop define
itself? North Star Aviation, Inc. of Ulysses, Kansas has been able to set itself apart from the norm in a multitude of ways. Not only is it a leading ag-aircraft shop in western Kansas, they service surrounding states as well. The shop offers unique services that usually aren’t found at a local shop, which brings in work from throughout the central portion

of the United States. Wendel Lambert is president and owner of North Star Aviation. He started his career as an A&P working for Mike Smith of Smith Speed Conversions (the famed Bonanza modifier) as the lead mechanic for seven years. He left Smith and, for another eight years, worked at an aviation facility in Johnson, Kansas. With more than 15 years of experience,
Wendel decided to open his own maintenance facility in Ulysses in 1996. The first ag-plane to come through the door was powered by a PT6A. Wendel had issues getting the engine going. He turned to, at that time a Pratt & Whitney Canada field rep, Fletcher Sharp for assistance. Sharp advised him to complete the heavy maintenance certification at P&WC. After doing so,

“ag-aircraft maintenance literally fell out of the sky.” Within two years, working from a 100’ X 150’ hangar on the Ulysses airport, North Star Aviation had four licensed mechanics all of which had traveled to Olney, Texas to be certified to work on Air Tractors. Last year, a second 100’ X 150’ hangar was built to help with housing and servicing AT-802 fire bombers and overflow maintenance from the main hangar. Today, North Star Aviation employees eight full-time licensed A&Ps, of which three are IAs, and two part-time A&Ps. Steve Rice, an IA, is North Star Aviation’s Director of Maintenance plus oversees the parts department that keeps over $300,000 of parts inventory that customers have access to 24/7. Although North Star Aviation specializes in Air Tractors and PT6A engines, by no means is it exclusive to them. It is not uncommon for a TPE331 Thrush or a radial-powered Ag-Cat to be in for service. North Star is a full service facility. Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, Texas is North Star Aviation’s exclusive Air Tractor parts supplier and recently, North Star Aviation became the Avenger Sales and Service Center for the central U.S., working with Dave Johnston of Johnston Air Service in California. The Avenger installation extends all-models Thrush aircraft wing spars’ life limit to 40,000 hours. The first installation by North Star
Aviation was completed in November 2009 that also included installing a North Star Aviation STC’d leading edge kit for the wings. The leading edge kit provides for an additional aluminum skin folded inside the leading edge improving its strength. North Star Aviation is currently obtaining an STC for its Par-Ser starting system (Designed by Hitek, Inc.) for PT6A and TPE331 turbine engines. Over 45 units have been successfully installed via a field approval FAA Form 337. At fuel induction into the engine, the unit converts line volts to the startergenerator to 48 volts. As the engine starting speed increases, less amps are needed in the process making 48 volts available to the starter-generator for a faster start. The Par-Ser starting system requires about three man-hours to install. It weighs a mere four pounds and is mounted on the firewall’s engine side. It is manually operated by the pilot and will not activate if the battery does not have sufficient condition to safely start the engine. Pilots typically see 100° C cooler starts using the unit. The unit sells for $3,800, installed. Another important service provided by
Wendel Lambert holds the less-than-four pound Par-Ser start boost unit; mounted on the firewall of an Air Tractor.
Steve Rice positions an Avenger kit’s components; Avenger spar cap for Thrush wing spar.

The new hangar is already full with aircraft about to be serviced, in service or waiting on pick up.
North Star Aviation during an annual inspection that affects the battery is the use of a Hitek desulfator. With every annual inspection, North Star Aviation inspects the aircraft’s battery condition. If the battery’s condition is 80% or better, it is returned to service. If less than 80% of condition remains, it is desulfated then retested to check condition. If 80% is not reached, the battery is replaced. Desulfating the battery revives and extends its life. Dallas Airmotive recently named North Star Aviation its designated ag service center for the central U.S. Dallas Airmotive returned to the

ag-aviation scene in 2009 with its new AGright Light Overhaul and Warranty Program for all-models PT6A engines. North Star Aviation had been working with the company for the last five years for its turbine engine service work and pushed Dallas Airmotive to develop the program. The AGright program offers a warranty of 1,750 hours or three years, whichever comes first. The program has an automatic warranty renewal program policy for the entire engine if Dallas Airmotive or North Star Aviation
performs the next scheduled hot section inspection. North Star Aviation can perform the hot section inspection on the wing, as well as accessories and gearbox inspections and light teardowns for both the PT6A and the TPE331 engines. The company can travel to the operator for major work, inspections and engine removal. It also maintains a rental pool of engines and power sections to keep its customers flying while their engines are being repaired or overhauled.
With starting systems, turbine engine servicing, aircraft recovery, factorytrained personnel and a service center for major wing repair, it comes as no surprise North Star Aviation in March 2009 became a dealer and service center for the installation of the AmSafe restraint systems for ag-aircraft. It takes North Star Aviation about half of a day to install a unit. As part of North Star Aviation’s flat rate annual, it uses a special machine to test the unit. Wendel Lambert’s North Star Aviation offers the ag-operator much more than a typical ag-aviation repair or annual inspection. Its diversity allows for just about any problem with an agplane to be competently resolved. It’s obvious that most of the 130 ag-planes North Star Aviation services and annuals each year are not all local, reaching further than from western Kansas, offering services unique to an ag-aviation maintenance facility.
Steve Rice, North Star Aviation’s Director of Maintenance and Parts Department shows the AmSafe restraint system for an Air Tractor prior to its installation.
