With my Yankee friend, Rick Reed (IL).
It didn’t have to happen On the morning of January 10, 2011, a 1975 Thrush ag-plane hit a MET (Meteorological Evaluation Tower) in the California Delta. The impact sheared off part of the aircraft’s wing, resulting in a fatal crash. AgAir Update’s sincere condolences go to the pilot’s family. Ironically, January 5, 2011, the FAA issued a Proposed Revision to Advisory Circular (AC); request for comments. The FAA is considering revising the current AC on Obstruction Marking and Lighting to include marking guidance for METs. Currently, METs fall outside of the regulation of the FAA, even though they present a clear and distinct hazard to ag-flying. They are not marked, nearly impossible to see and often portable. At this point, the FAA does not seem to think the METs warrant regulation. Maybe after January 10’s fatal accident with a MET, the FAA will rethink their position. The MET involved in the accident was a portable unit with guy wires and no cement foundation. One observer was quoted as saying the tower was nearly invisible from the ground and likely much more so from the air. Where is the conscience of the MET people? Is a life not worth the inconvenience to properly mark the MET? Markings and regulations are not enough. METs’ positions should be entered into an accessible database that ag-pilots
can monitor. It would be even better if a notification system could be established where ag-pilot subscribers would receive alerts when a tower is installed, with its lat-long position. How hard would that be? METs are so dangerous to ag-flying, that unless immediate action is taken by the FAA and those who own the METs to address this safety issue, it will happen again. Pilots do not survive crashes involving towers. I can only imagine my liability if I was to erect an unmarked tower where it would affect flight safety. I feel confident the courts would find me negligent. I have yet to hear a negative comment about the NAAA trade show held in Savannah last December. Needless to say, that’s remarkable. I am often asked if the NAAA will be returning to this historical city. My understanding, so far, is the city of Savannah is planning on the NAAA convention to return in the very near future. Maybe in 2012 (that’s purely my speculation). In a recent Savannah newspaper, it stated more than 3,100 rooms were booked and over $1.3 million dollars spent because of the NAAA convention. The article implied Savannah city leaders were impressed. The NAAA was asked by city officials what could the city do to entice the Association to return? The NAAA responded with three items: 1)

install doors at the convention center large enough to accept aircraft, 2) extend the landing site and 3) move some palm trees to make towing from the landing site to the convention center easier. The Savannah Economic Development Authority has agreed to spend $140,000 to “blow out” the back wall of the convention center to accommodate ag-aircraft. The Authority is counting on at least two more conventions from the NAAA. Hilton Worldwide, Inc. beat out other hotels to build a $130 million, 500-room facility on Hutchinson Island where the convention center is located. This would be great, adding a second hotel on the same side of the Savannah River as the convention center. Ground breaking could start as early as May 2011. Do you want the NAAA convention to return to Savannah? Express yourself by visiting agairupdate.com and responding with our one-click survey. You’ll see the results immediately.

agair mail nose art I won the nose art drawing that was donated by BASF at the NAAA convention. We thought we would put the art on the tail of our turbine Cessna 188. Thought it was fitting to use the opportunity to promote agricultural aviation and depict the Husky spraying and including the wording “Agriculture Aviation - Stewards of the Sky” What are your thoughts? Hope all is going well. Best Regards, Terry Harchenko Salem, OR Hello Terry; Congrates on the nose/tail art! I’m sure your idea will work well and I feel that NAAA would appreciate it, picking up their convention theme. Send pix when you finish, please! Also, been in touch with Dave at Soloy about Brazil and our Latin editions. Thanks for advising him. I’ll be in Argentina where the owners of the C188 factory (Pijao) are based. I offered to delivery any message. See ya. Tell Jerry “Hello”!—Bill

top of it. Can you tell me when this is due? BTW - I had given my issues to a friend of mine - a radiologist - because I thought he would enjoy it. Although he is a doctor, he loves learning new things and sure enough - he told me yesterday at breakfast that he had subscribed because he enjoyed reading and learning about ag-aviation. His name is Rob Newth and he’s in Overland Park. Great guy and loves not only the business of ag but the values your magazine represents. I appreciate all you guys do and am particularly impressed with the new web offerings that have cropped up. I hope you have a great new year and am looking forward to future issues! Warmest regards, Jim Alsup Overland Park, KS Hello Jim; Thanks so much for enjoying AAU and thanks for passing it along. We are “just having fun”! Your sub expired with the December edition. I’ll have Brit give you a call to renew. You should have gotten a couple of notices via email and regular post. —Bill
snow Enjoy the magazine very much. The subscription was started by Leland Snow for my dad a couple of years back and I kept it up for him. When his eyesight got bad he loved to look at the pictures, especially if they were of any “Snow” designed and built airplane. He and Leland were great friends. Sadly, dad passed away in 2010. I carry the magazine on my trips with Continental Airlines now and read it from cover to cover. I am closing down his PO Box, so I would appreciate you switching the mailing address. Also, I am interested in exploring the SEAT business after my airline career. I noticed in one issue there were a couple of very good articles. Were they just inserts, or is their a forestry version of the AgAir Update. While I don’t think I’ll ever “cropdust” again, I might be able to become a SEAT pilot. If so, I would appreciate switching the
subscription from the ag side to the forestry side. Thanks very much, Jeff T. Burke Jr. Houston, TX Jeff; No problem, will update the database asap. Sorry to hear about your dad. Thank you for the compliments. As for AgAir Update’s SEAT articles, part of AgAir Update becomes AirFire & Forestry four times a year. So, you get the best of both worlds since your sub includes both. -Bill
stearman Howdy Bill and AAU Team! Thank you so very much for the article on my Stearman. This was a very timely boost to me. Your newspaper is great fun and helps me to keep up with friends and technology! I just may have to hang the Stearman in the hangar and have me one of those GE Thrushes someday!!! Looks pretty sharp! Sincerely, Joe Woolslayer Tulsa, OK Hello Joe; You are most welcome, my friend. I’m glad you liked it. As for the GE Thrush, it’s a hoss! —Bill
association I’m curious to know if Tennessee has an ag aviation Association? Thanks, Don Rainer Wimberley, TX Hello Don; I do believe that Tennessee started an ag-av association, albeit a small one. You’ll need to contact Ben Baker, as I believe he may be the contact person. I’ve included his email address in the Cc: field of this email.—Bill
friends I met a South African ag operator in Savannah and became immediate friends.
I mentioned the possibility of him coming to work in the Midwest for three weeks or so, during July on the corn run and he said he’d really like to do that. If you know of an operator needing an experienced turbine pilot, let me know. Thanks, Pierre Smith Louisville, GA pierrejs@bellsouth.net Hello Pierre; I’ll print your “Letter to the Editor” and maybe someone will respond.—Bill
getting back We’re still at home recovering, not able to fly yet, but looking forward to getting back in the air! At least we can enjoy reading all about it - your new format is great! We read one of AgAir Update’s articles on pilots’ salaries - please, can you send us the article again. We’d also like to know what the average charge is per acre to the farmer for spraying at two gallons/acre (we do 20lt/ha average) and solids application - do they charge by weight per acre (we do kg/ha)? Best regards Pat & Sara Neylan Airspray East Africa Hello Sara and Pat; So good to hear that you are surviving from your fiasco near-death experience. I had to turn down Russell’s offer to go camping! Thanks for the compliment about AgAir Update. It is appreciated. As for pricing, it is all over the place, depending on several factors. I’ve heard of Midwest operators getting $8-$10 per acre for two-gallon work, while operators in the South as low as $3.00 and in some cases, lower. Much of pricing depends on length of season (amount of work), distance to ferry and size of fields. The same holds true with dry work. The rate per pound could be anywhere from $0.03 to over $0.10. I suggest you visit AgAir Update’s Forum and post your question to see the answers you get. There has been
quite an interesting number of posts about pilot’s pay, which also varies. Your post would surely receive the same activity. See ya and take care of yourselves. No more camping in the boon docks filled with murderers and thieves!—Bill
cellphones The New Zealand Director CAA has made it clear that unless the industry (aerial application) introduces procedures for the safe use of on-board cellphones, he will regulate their use. That might mean that cellphone use is prohibited in GA aircraft. The NZ Helicopter Assn. has developed a simple procedure as industry best practice. The NZAAA strongly advises that all ag operators adopt this procedure and incorporate it into the operation’s manual suite. Procedures for Cellphone and Satellite Phone Use in Aircraft 1) Any person on board other than the pilot in command (PiC) shall be permitted to use a cellphone at any time provided that the PIC is isolated from it to the extent that the conversation cannot be overheard. 2) PIC’s shall be permitted to use a cellphone for verbal communication under the following conditions: a) The cellphone is ‘hardwired’ into the aircraft such that the PIC can operate it hands free; and b) When the aircraft is on the ground and the RPM set to ground idle; or c) During flight above 500’AGL when the PIC has assessed that the distraction will have no effect on flight safety. 3) PIC’s shall not use a cellphone when engaged in any activity other than when the aircraft is in the cruise condition. Use during agricultural, lifting, fire fighting and all low level operations is expressly prohibited. 4) PIC’s are permitted to send texts, only when the aircraft is on the ground and the RPM set to ground idle. 5) Onboard telephone systems should be set to divert to their answering service after no more than four rings. 6) When company personnel want to phone a pilot they should phone the ground crew and ask them to get the pilot to return the call. John Maber NZAAA Executive Officer Hamilton, New Zealand
G’day John; All makes good sense to me. Texting is prohibited while driving in Georgia and other states, surely texting while conducting ag-ops is too dangerous. I feel the same is true for phoning as well. The recommendations of the NZ Helicopter Assn. seem reasonable enough to me.—Bill
possibilities As publisher and editor of AgAir Update and a crop duster, you have the pulse of the aerial application business. In just a few weeks, will be the second year anniversary of my divorce and I am exploring possible employment opportunities. I am a licensed professional civil engineer with 22 years of consulting experience and have been quite miserable in this field since I started. The divorce has given me a new lease on life and I’m trying to decide what I can do for the second half of my life. I’m 45 years old and have no kids. I’m exploring possible employment opportunities for a full time flying position with an operation that has a solid safety record with benefits if possible. I have 1,875 hours total time with 935 hours in tail wheel (mostly in Cessna 180s and 185s), with no accidents or incidents. I have a single-engine, multi-engine amd ATP ratings, as well as my A&P license (work has been on Cessna and Beechcraft single and multi-engine general aviation aircraft). I have no turbine experience, but learn and catch on quickly and need to start somewhere. Do you have any ideas or recommendations where I might be able to find employment? I was born and raised in Georgia and left the Peach State in April 2003 with my then fiancée. I currently live in Paige, Texas and would like to end up either in Georgia or an adjacent state as my parents live in northeast Georgia and are getting up in years. I plan on putting my place on the market in spring of 2011 and moving as soon as I sell the it. I was wondering if you were aware of any operations that are currently or might be willing to mentor a future aerial applicator. I wouldn’t be opposed to a job with Thrush Aircraft that could lead

to a position as a ferry pilot or demonstration pilot. From what I have observed and I may be wrong, but you have to know someone within the industry to give you a chance. Thanks for your time, Shaun Beroset Paige, TX Hello Shaun; The short answer, attend an agaviation school. You already have a good starting resume with tailwheel time and an A&P license. At 45, if you are going to do this, you need to get started right away. I have no magic formula to finding a seat, nor do I recommend people to operators, can’t go down that road. Your best bet is get involved with the industry by going to ag-school, attending state and national trade shows for the industry and working for an operator on the ground. The odds of you simply walking up to an operation and start out flying ag are slim and none. It is simply too much to ask of a responsible operator to turn a green pilot lose with his expensive equipment and potential liability. There has to be a transition involving training, attitude and the operator getting to know you. There are exceptions, but I would be very wary of an operator that told you otherwise, unless the operator and you already have a relationship. It is not going to be an easy endeavor getting into flying ag. It will take lots of due diligence and sacrifices. However, for those that succeed, they are some of the most satisfied people in the world. Hope this helps—Bill

Pigs can fly! by Bill Lavender COTTON PLANT, AR—Until not too long ago, maybe ten years or so, most, if not all Air Tractors and Thrush aircraft were painted yellow, (albeit different shades). Occasionally, an operator would have a favorite color or paint scheme and when the aircraft needed repainting, he would use it; and this is exactly what a die hard Arkansas Razorback fan has done. Stan Ferguson, owner/operator of Southern Aire, started ag flying in 1976 working for Charlie Christmas in Shelby, Mississippi. In the winter of
1980, Stan formed Southern Aire, Inc. in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Working rice and cotton between Crowely’s Ridge and the Arkansas River Delta, Stan found himself in his late 50s flying 600-700 hours a season in an AT-502A (PT6A-45 with AT-802 empennage). Stan wanted to cut back on his flying hours and told his wife, Sue, “this many hours in a season are killing me.” Stan sold the 502 and replaced it with an AT-602. The 602 was a bare fuselage bought from Randy Gibbons of Marvel, Arkansas in the winter of 2008. The fuselage
Like with so many other ag-pilots, in this fish eye view of Stan’s 602 cockpit, his wife, Sue, is flying with him (photo right of hopper window).
came from a 1997 model, the rebuilt wings from another 602 with 54 hours on them. Stan figured this would be the last aircraft purchase for his remaining ag-flying career. Sparing no expense, he powered the 602 with a fresh overhauled PT6A-65 engine and new prop. For comfort the seat frame was covered with a Seating Solutions seat cover. Guidance is supplied by an M3 Hemisphere GPS. For fast loading, a Frost Wingman is used. Every bolt, nut and moving part was installed with new Air Tractor parts. The delivery date was supposed to be May, in time for the 2008 season. The delivery date came and went. Arrangements had to be made to cover Stan’s work and finally, the aircraft was delivered in August. As luck would have it, during the aircraft’s first job and Stan with only a few hours logged in a 602, the engine flamed out due to a contaminated fuel tank causing Stan to land cross ways in a soybean field. The aircraft suffered minimal damage, primarily an aileron. Stan repaired the damage enough to fly the aircraft out of the soybean field. The incident put the 602 back in the shop until the end of September, after the 2008 season was over. Instead of selling the 502 as planned in 2008, Stan had to use it to complete the season.
Stan flew the 602 for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, logging 1,179 hours. “What happened to flying less hours?” Stan asked Sue. The two-year old Air Tractor paint scheme was already starting to fade, stain and flake off the airframe. It would need repainting. Stan, Sue and Stan’s son, Robert, are Razorback fans in a very big way. Believing the 602 would be Stan’s last ag-plane, the three decided to make a Razorback fan statement. They decided to paint the 602 Razorback colors and add Razorback logos and artwork from prop to tail, wingtip to wingtip. The “N” number was changed to N602SQ, named after Sue, Stan’s wife of 32 years. The 602 is the third “Susie Q”. The first one was a Cessna Ag-Husky and the second one was the 502. Sue and Robert created the paint scheme and sent it via Facebook to Mrs. Crider at Crider Aircraft Painting in Mena, Arkansas. To the Ferguson’s favor, the folks at Crider Aircraft Painting are avid Razorback fans, too. According to Stan, “Crider really showed their stuff on our 602. I realize the aircraft is unique, but most pilots I know still have a little boy left in them and I am no different! Woo Pig...Sooie!”

Air Tractors to Brazil by Ray Dyson As a working ag-pilot for thirty-eight years and nearly thirty-thousand hours in the air, I, like many crop dusters, felt the time flying an airplane from point A to point B was necessary to get to the next job and back to work. Our life is one of constant maneuvering. When I wasn’t working an Air Tractor I was teaching and flying aerobatics in a variety of really cool hot rod airplanes. Straight and level was not a regular part of my repertoire. So, it seemed out of character when I decided to retire from ag-flying at 60 that I accepted a long standing offer from a friend to join him ferrying Air Tractors to customers worldwide. Now, after completing three trips to Brazil, Ecuador and Spain, I can tell you that these long straight legs are a whole new and interesting challenge. This article is about my first trip from Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, Texas to Cuiaba, Brazil. We were a group of three AT502s. The route took us to Fort Pierce, Florida, then Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, on to Boa Vista, Brazil and finally to our
destination in Cuiaba twelve hundred miles further south. This journey consisted of four thousand miles, four days and nearly thirty hours flying time. We departed Lane Aviation VFR on a rainy morning flying low along the Gulf coast to the mouth of the Mississippi River. There, we picked up an IFR clearance for the route across the Gulf of Mexico to Sarasota, Florida then onto Fort Pierce after a total of six hours in the air. The weather steadily improved with “The Sunshine State “ faithfully living up to its name. The next day we fueled the hoppers with 475 gallons and topped the mains. We filed an IFR flight plan that took us to Puerto Rico through the Bahamas, east of Hispaniola and to Aguadilla on the western tip of Puerto Rico. Once again, the weather was perfect; smooth air, scattered clouds and great visibility. I knew it wasn’t always going to be this easy but I was happy for it. After Puerto Rico, we left the U.S. territory and the bureaucratic workload
became more intense. Since the AT502s were being exported, a series of documents had to be presented to U.S. Customs. Everything had to be in perfect order or you were going nowhere. To depart the U.S. territory, an EAPIS report has to be filed with the TSA at least two hours before departure, which if not done properly could result in thousands of dollars in fines. Since we were flying an international flight, an ICAO flight plan had to be filed as well. All this done, we departed early the next morning for South America. Our route took us east towards San Juan then a turn to the south towards a series of waypoints over the Caribbean Sea to the coast of Venezuala. Once near land, we began to encounter towering cumulus. I flew around the bigger buildups, only penetrating the smaller and more benign clouds that rain on you heavily as soon as penetrated. This gives me a little IMC practice in the Air Tractor which I know I will need later. All things considered it was a smooth leg.
Arriving at Boa Vista, Brazil, I got my first experience with the rigid discipline of the Brazilian controllers. I think the controller asked me four times to verify my gear was down and locked. On the ground, after more than seven hours flying, we discover it is a Brazilian holiday and none of the government offices were open. This left us stranded on the ramp with no way to get our passports stamped and visas validated so we can enter the country. Fortunately, we were met by an agent who knew a federal policeman who was willing to stamp our documents. Because Boa Vista is a port of entry into Brazil, we were required to present documents to the authorities necessary for importing the AT502s into the country. The next day was a whirlwind tour of a series of governmental agencies paying taxes, landing, departure and immigration fees and other fees I was not quite sure about. Everything had to be stamped and signed and stamped again. After the fees were paid, we

picked up our flight plans and departed. However, don’t start your engine before receiving your clearance. We depart in good weather with a route south through central Brazil across the vast expanse of the Amazon jungle. Flying at 13,000 feet for five hours, with nothing but an unbroken sea of trees in every direction, is truly awe inspiring and a little unnerving as well. You realize you are truly in the hands of a Holy Trinity: God, Pratt and Whitney. My biggest problem was communications. Transmissions from the controllers were scratchy and weak. I was told the equipment is outdated. On top of that, the accent of the Portuguese-speaking controllers is nearly incomprehensible. All this makes for a lot of “Please repeat”, creating frustration on both ends of the communication. The further south I flew, the worse the weather became. I was going around ever bigger thunder heads until I reached a line I could neither get over, through, or around. The last two hundred miles was spent down low flying around rain shafts en route to Cuiaba. After landing, I was immediately met with a host of officials wanting more documents signed. Then, it was off to
Immigration and Customs for more stamps. The Brazilians love their stamps. After completing the documentation, it was back to the airplane to pack up the ferry radios and gear. Then, there was the obligatory life threatening cab ride to the hotel where you eat dinner, catch a quick night’s sleep and board a flight for home early the next morning. Being a ferry pilot is a lot like being a crop duster in that you spend long hours in the cockpit of an ag-plane with the addition of having to adhere to a series of U.S. and foreign government regulations and procedures that if not adhered to properly can make your life truly miserable. Another difference is flying IMC in an Air Tractor. Don’t get me started on that. They are a great airplane, but a poor instrument platform. All in all, I have to say I am enjoying my new endeavor. International flying in an Air Tractor is a huge challenge for this old crop duster that I welcome. The learning curve has been extremely steep and shows no sign of flattening out. It is like going back to college with final exams in the cockpit all by yourself, except there is no pass or fail. This is a good thing and helps keep this grandfather’s synapses firing smoothly.

Airworthiness Directive for Air Tractor AT–802 and AT–802A AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), DOT. ACTION: Final rule; request for comments. SUMMARY: The FAA is revising an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for Air Tractor, Inc. (Air Tractor) Models AT– 802 and AT–802A airplanes. That AD currently requires owners to repetitively inspect (using the eddy current method) the two outboard fastener holes in both of the wing main spar lower caps at the center splice joint for cracks and repair or replace any cracked spar, and changes the safe life for certain serial (SN) ranges. This AD retains the actions of AD 2010– 17–18 and reduces the applicability from all serial numbers beginning with SN–0001 as required by the previous AD to SN–0001 through SN–0269. This AD was prompted by FAA’s evaluation of a comment from David Ligon, Air Tractor, and its determination to reduce the applicability from that already required by the previous AD. The FAA is issuing
this AD to detect and correct cracks in the wing main spar lower cap at the center splice joint, which could result in failure of the spar cap and lead to wing separation and loss of control of the airplane. For the full revision: visit www. agairupdate.com/Air Tractor AD DATES: This AD was effective January 14, 2011. The Director of the Federal Register approved the incorporation by reference of certain publications listed in this AD as of September 9, 2010 (75 FR 52255, August 25, 2010). The Director of the Federal Register approved the incorporation by reference of certain other publications listed in this AD as of April 21, 2006 (71 FR 19994, April 19, 2006). The FAA must receive any comments on this AD by February 14, 2011.

Since issuing AD 2010–17–18, the FAA has evaluated a comment from David Ligon, Air Tractor, and determined to reduce the applicability from all serial numbers beginning with SN– 0001 as required by the previous AD to SN–0001 through SN–0269. Airplane SN–0270 and subsequent wing main spar components are life limited at 11,700 hours time-in-service as described in Air Tractor, Inc. AT 802/ 802A Airworthiness Limitations, Pages 6–i, 6–1, and 6–2, dated: September 16, 2009.
AD Requirements This AD requires accomplishing the actions specified in the service information described previously. The AD also requires sending the inspection results (if cracks are found) to Andrew McAnaul, Aerospace Engineer, ASW– 150 (c/o MIDO–43), 10100 Reunion Place, Suite 650, San Antonio, Texas 78216; phone: (210) 308–3365; fax: (210) 308–3370.
Applicability (c) This AD affects Air Tractor, Inc. Models AT–802 and AT–802A airplanes, serial numbers (SNs) –0001 through –0269, that are: (1) certificated in any category; (2) engaged in agricultural dispersal operations, including those airplanes that have been converted from fire fighting to agricultural dispersal or airplanes that convert between fire fighting and agricultural dispersal; (3) not equipped with the factorysupplied computerized fire gate (part number (P/N) 80540); and (4) not engaged in only full-time fire fighting.

On August 11, 2010, the FAA issued AD 2010–17–18, amendment 39–16412 (75 FR 52255, August 25, 2010), for all Air Tractor Models AT–802 and AT–802A airplanes. That AD requires owners to repetitively inspect (using the eddy current method) the two outboard fastener holes in both of the wing main spar lower caps at the center splice joint for cracks and repair or replace any cracked spar, and changes the safe life for certain SN ranges. That AD resulted from the FAA’s evaluation of service information issued by Air Tractor and a determination for the needed to add inspections, add modifications, and change the safe life for certain SN ranges. The FAA issued that AD to detect and correct cracks in the wing main spar lower cap at the center splice joint, which could result in failure of the spar cap and lead to wing separation and loss of control of the airplane.

SAIB concerning oversized tire installations This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) alerts registered owners and operators of small airplanes, to follow established safety criteria, guidance and data when modifying aircraft with tires that are oversized compared to the original equipment FAA approved type design. Oversized tires have been FAA approved by supplemental type certificates (STC) and field approvals on numerous small aircraft types for an assortment of reasons, such as maintaining ground clearance when installing larger propellers or improving landing performance for unique conditions. These oversized tires have customarily been referred to as “Tundra” tires. At this time, the FAA has determined that this airworthiness concern is not an unsafe condition that would warrant airworthiness directive (AD) action under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 39. Investigation of a recent accident highlights the need for reminding operators of part 23 certificated airplanes that oversized tire modifications require
analysis and substantiation as well as periodic inspections to prevent unsafe conditions. This SAIB reiterates the criteria to apply when evaluating the use of oversized tires and for determining the appropriate requirements to obtain necessary FAA approval. Recently, there was a non-fatal accident involving an Ag-Cat Model G-164B airplane equipped with the larger 29x11-10 tires. The aircraft encountered a wheel failure that caused a wheel brake to lock up, which resulted in the aircraft departing the runway, coming to rest in a ditch. An investigation determined the likely failure sequence of the accident was due to an initial crack of unknown origin in the inner flange. The weakened flange allowed the larger pressurized tire to fail the flange at the crack. The wheel flange broke into several pieces 360 degrees around the wheel assembly circumference. The broken flange pieces pressed inward by the existing tire/ tube pressure, contacted the calipers, and caused the wheel brakes to lock up. The aircraft subsequently left the
runway and came to rest in a ditch. The facts provided from the initial onsite investigation were insufficient to determine the precise failure scenario. Some G-164B aircraft have been modified with “Geared” Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engines having larger diameter propellers. With the reduced ground clearance these propellers tended to siphon up debris on unimproved airstrips when at flight attitude during takeoff, thereby damaging the propellers. To improve ground clearance, some operators replaced the standard 8.50x10 tires with the larger 29x11-10 tires on the original Cleveland Wheel and Brake wheel part number 40-101. This practice subsequently continued with the turbo propeller configured aircraft. The larger tires on the 40-101 wheels reduced the running clearance between the tire sidewalls and the wheel brake calipers. There is no documented FAA approval to install these larger tires on the G-164B aircraft. However, an STC that authorizes the larger tire approval on similar aircraft (Air Tractor) has been issued. This STC has been used by operators
and repair stations as a basis for field installations for the G-164B aircraft. Operators of oversized tires should acquire an STC or field approval supported by FAA-approved data with similar original equipment manufacturer (OEM) restrictions for installation, pressure, etc. Before installation of larger tires operators should do the following as a minimum: 1. Initially inspect wheels for cracks using an industry standard fluorescent penetrant process with annual inspections thereafter. 2. Install only approved vendor supplied tires. 3. Install new tubes. 4. Determine the appropriate tire pressure for your specific tire, aircraft, and aircraft operations in consultation with the approved tire manufacturer and FAA Advisory Circular, AC 23-17B. 5. Check for clearance between the tire and brake components. 6. Check the tire pressure and abnormal wear at 2 week intervals or less. Additional safety information to the public of potential problems associated with aircraft with oversized tires is also provided in Safety Alert for Operations (SAFO) 10007, dated 5/24/10.

Kemper is also the dealer for Air Tractor aircraft for the Northwest U.S., the Dakotas and all of Canada. “I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Richter said of his duties over the next 12 months. “We’ve got a great group to work with. It’s going to be exciting and rewarding, and I’m just looking forward to working for the Association in 2011.” The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) represents more than 1,600 members in 46 states. NAAA supports the interests of small business owners and pilots licensed as professional commercial aerial applicators that use aircraft to enhance food, fiber and bio-fuel production, protect forestry and control health-threatening pests.

wing and a prayer
Jesus Christ rules everything in the universe “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:15-18). The Bible has been called, “Jesus’ Book” and in a sense that is true. Jesus said the Old Testament testified of Him (John 5:39). Matthew, Mark, Luke and John speak of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry and
His dying for the sins of the world (John 1:29). The book of Acts is the apostles telling the world, “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The letters of the apostles teach us what Jesus Christ has done for His church, how to live for Jesus Christ and that Jesus Christ will return for His people (1 Corinthians 15:50-54, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Revelation reveals Jesus Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16). Jesus Christ is before all things (Colossians 1:17). The apostle John wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
God. All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made…He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him…That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life. The life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us” (John 1:1-3, 10, 1 John 1:1-2). Jesus said that before Abraham was born “I am” (John 8:58), indicating that He is the eternal God. “In Him all things consist” (Colossians
1:17). Jesus said, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). Jesus Christ holds the universe together and maintains the balance of natural forces necessary for life to exist on this earth. Jesus Christ keeps the galaxies, stars and planets in their proper place in the heavens and controls their motion. Jesus Christ controls all the energy of the universe; He controls all gravitational, centrifugal and centripetal force. Jesus Christ controls every law of nature—the miracles He did and His resurrection from the dead prove that! Someday Jesus Christ will release this force and the whole universe will literally explode. Peter tells us, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens

will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10). Jesus is the creator and sustainer of this universe. We can thank Jesus Christ for “Upholding all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). Jesus Christ is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). Jesus said, “I will build My church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). Paul said, “There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all and in you all…He gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:4-13). Jesus Christ gives His church the mental, physical and spiritual abilities to accomplish its mission on this earth. Jesus told His disciples, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Jesus Christ gives all the gifts of the Holy Spirit to Christians for the work of ministering to His church (Read Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12). Every Christian is given a specific job within the church; the ability to fulfill these ministries is by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. Peter wrote, “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:3-4). Paul tells Christians, “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). Jesus Christ’s church is not a human organization. You cannot get into Jesus’ church by becoming a member of some denomination or local church. Jesus told Nicodemus that a person must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). How is a person born again? Jesus said, “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life…I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die” (John 3:16, 11:25-
26). Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:28-29). Paul wrote, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). Accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is the only way into God’s heaven. It’s a personal choice everyone has to make for them self!

Keeping fit for flight Pilots are taught to follow the “IMSAFE” checklist to evaluate their mental and physical fitness before each flight, but how do pilots get and stay fit? FAA offers a brochure titled “Fit for Flight” (http://www.faa.gov/pilots/safety/
pilotsafetybrochures/media/FitFor_ Flight.pdf ) that provides some basic information for pilots on how to adopt and maintain a flying-friendly healthy lifestyle.

get with a program While you don’t need the body of a professional athlete in order to fly, maintaining strength and flexibility is important. Muscles that aren’t used tend to atrophy and weaken—even that big one in your right leg that helps you keep the airplane on the centerline during takeoff. A healthy cardiovascular system helps you avoid potentially lifethreatening conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. One of the other important benefits of physical fitness is that your body is better prepared to cope with the various emotional and physical stressors that are encountered while flying. Of course, we’d be remiss if we did not remind pilots to check with a physician before beginning any exercise program. If your FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is also your primary care
physician, he or she may even be able to tailor a program to your specific needs and flying lifestyle.
eat right, fly smart The “Fit for Flight” brochure suggests that pilots who want to improve their overall diet eat well-balanced meals that offer a combination of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Keep your energy up, but avoid eating a big nap-inducing meal right before a flight. While many studies have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol can be good for your heart and possibly reduce the risk of some types of cancer, pilots need to be mindful that the“eight-hour bottle-to-throttle” rule is the absolute minimum. Some individuals may require a longer period between drinking and flying depending on the amount of alcohol consumed and their personal metabolism.

Drinking enough water throughout the day is important for anyone, especially if you work out. Remember, dry air aloft can also make you thirsty, so always have bottled water available in the cockpit— and a good alternate in mind in case you or your passengers need a bathroom break.
IMSAFE Checklist Before each flight, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Illness – Am I sick today? Am I coming down with a cold or other ailment? 2. Medication – Am I taking any medications that would impair my ability to act as PIC? 3. Stress – Am I under a lot of stress right now (work, family, or other pressures)? 4. Alcohol – Have eight hours, or more, elapsed since I last consumed alcohol? (See 14 CFR section 91.17) 5. Fatigue – Have I had enough rest or am I feeling sleepy? 6. Eating – Have I had enough to eat or am I feeling hungry or thirsty?

in my opinion
Beyond the sadness This topic I have touched on previously; but now deserves elaboration. I tell my turbine students, especially the young guys who can fly my turbine Thrush like they have 20 years experience, “You do not have to prove your machismo to anyone!” In other words, do not fly “over your head.” Extra heavy loads and super fast turns will bite you eventually and that’s the truth. I have already heard talk that in a full day of flying you can cut as much as 30 minutes off your time which “might” equate to another 50-100 acres or $400-$800. It is still my contention this kind of flying will result in your demise. Furthermore, statistics show accidents that are attributed to 15 or 20-second turns and/or flying extra heavy, account for the vast majority of pilot error accidents. When you weigh

the additional risk vs. the money return and you opt for the additional risk, you put yourself in the “dumb-a--” category. You may as well go to a casino and shoot craps. When I hear of a young turbine pilot who “bought the farm” from trying to fly over his or the airplane’s capability, I am truly grief stricken. I know what I put my family through when I crashed a Pawnee in 1971. I spent four months in the burn unit of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. My accident was due entirely to flying way over my head and outside the safe envelope of the airplane. My sadness is soon followed by anger. The young pilot’s accident did not have to happen! Today’s ag planes are truly marvels of aeronautical engineering, but they are not made to compete with an Extra 300 or an S-2 Pitts. Hammerhead turns and aileron rolls are fun in an airplane designed for aerobatics. “In My Opinion”, 200 gallons in an Ag-Truck is way beyond the safe limit, as is 300 gallons in a 450 Ag-Cat and I could go on and on. This makes me think about a related subject which is surely controversial and that is re-currency training. Just because I am in the business of training agpilots and conducting turbine transition training, my position as an ag-pilot instructor is genuinely irrelevant. I tell my students; I consider ag-pilots to be every bit as much a “professional” as
military fighter pilots, airline pilots and corporate pilots. All the aforementioned professional pilots participate in recurrency training. Furthermore, for agpilots, individual states have commercial pesticide applicator’s seminars and as a commercial pilot you must have a biennial flight review. The primary road block to re-currency training is: “What aircraft are you going to use to fly?” The AT-504, AT-502 simulator and DC Thrush aircraft, along with selected instructor ag-pilots, could be used similarly to my 2.5-hour turbine refresher course. If such a policy were implemented, a consensus about course requirements would need to be reached. An ag-pilot re-currency flight could also double as a biennial flight review, which needs to be logged anyway. It’s just “My Opinion”, but I believe it is time to think about recurrency training. Maybe a committee could be formed to conduct research about it. It seems to me there have been numerous pilot error accidents of late that should not have happened. Be safe, have fun and make money, always in that order.

MET towers and the FAA by Terry Stieren MN Agirucltural Aviation On Wednesday, December 15, there was a meeting held with Representatives of the Wind Industry/Aviation Safety Working Group and the FAA. I am pleased to be able to report that the FAA appears to be poised to take a giant step forward regarding the issue of unmarked, unlit, unidentified, towers which pose a very real hazard to low level aviators in the U.S.. At Wednesday’s meeting the FAA announced that in the very near future they will be publishing a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) in the Federal Register. The NPRM will lay out proposed standards for marking and/or lighting of structures under 200’. Once the NPRM is published, it is likely a 30 day comment period will follow, during which everyone’s comments will solicited and reviewed.

It is hoped the final rule will be in place by March/April of 2011. CAUTION: As everyone knows, we are dealing with the Federal Government in this instance. Things have a tendency to change from one day to the next.
However, we are most hopeful that this very critical safety issue will continue to receive the high-level attention it deserves from policy makers in Washington, D.C.
Also at Wednesday’s meeting, members of the FAA Safety Team announced plans to develop a publication to increase awareness of these towers. Gary Kwasniewski of the FAA is in charge of this effort. Gary has a rough draft of the publication for which he is seeking comments. Gary, now that you have our e-mail list, could you please forward an electronic copy of the brochure to all of these folks? If you are interested in making comments, please respond to Gary by no later than Jan.1. We will continue to update our Working Group on the progress of this issue, and as soon as we are notified that the NPRM is published, we will notify all of you. Thanks to all of the representatives who took time out of their very busy schedules to attend this meeting, and thanks to the FAA representatives who continue to work to bring this critical issue to the forefront. service before January 1, 2012 (before January 1, 2013, for certain property with a long production period and for certain aircraft), the property does not qualify for the 50% special depreciation allowance. 3) Asset must also be placed in service before September 9, 2010, or after December 31, 2011, and before January 1, 2013 (or before September 9, 2010, or after December 31, 2012, and before January 1, 2014, for certain property with a long production period and for certain aircraft). The original use of the property must begin with you after December 31, 2007. 4) Asset must qualify for the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System [MACRS] depreciation method. 5) Asset is not eligible for bonus depreciation if the asset was purchased by a binding contract that existed before January 1, 2008. For the 50% bonus depreciation, the bonus depreciation claimed in the first year is in addition to the normal depreciation calculated on the balance (Purchase price plus sales tax less the bonus depreciation). There are no dollar limits on the amount of depreciation claimed using either bonus depreciation percentages. For any depreciation method, the total depreciation claimed can never exceed
the purchase price of the equipment plus the sales tax. The bonus depreciation available on NEW equipment could make purchasing new equipment more beneficial to the purchaser than purchasing used equipment. In some situations, bonus depreciation might create an immediate tax refund due to a net operating loss that could be carried back to previous years. “TABLE ONE: Depreciation Percentages Table” shows the differences in depreciation for new and used equipment using the 50%, 100%, 5 Year MACRS and 7 Year MACRS depreciation methods. Expanded Asset Expense Election for Small Businesses (Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Code): This asset expense election applies to both new and used assets as well as new improvements. If the total of all asset purchases during 2010 or 2011 are less than $2,000,000, the taxpayer is allowed a first year deduction of up to $500,000 in Section 179 expenses. If total asset purchases exceed $2,000,000 per year, the maximum amount expensed ($500,000) is reduced dollar-for-dollar by the amount of purchases in excess of $2,000,000 until the expense deduction reaches zero when the total of all asset

purchases reach $2,500,000. During 2012, $125,000 can be expensed, provided the total assets purchased in 2012 are less than $500,000 and the amount expensed is reduced dollar-fordollar until reaching zero when total asset purchases reach $625,000. Both the 50% bonus depreciation and Section 179 expensing methods can be used if total asset purchases do not exceed $2,500,000. Section 179 deductions are considered first, then the 50% bonus depreciation, and finally the regular MACRS depreciation on the balance. NEW & USED SECTION 179 EXAMPLES using 5 Yr & 7 Yr MACRS: Table Two and Table Three show examples of combining the Section 179 deduction with the 50% bonus depreciation using 5 Yr MACRS and 7 Yr MACRS depreciation methods. 5-Year Carryback on Net Operating Losses for Small Businesses: This new bill provides additional benefits that allow losses in 2010 to be carried back five years for small businesses and could apply against the alternative minimum tax. Gross receipts of $50 million or less are required to be considered a small business. The AircraftCostAnalysis program can be used to produce cost analyses that compare the cash flows of different depreciation methods and therefore assist in your decision making on which depreciation method is best for your situation. New cell phone technology in the ag-cockpit ComLinkPro recently introduced the Angel - a small, lightweight audio headset interface with a heavyweight punch that is ideal for ag-pilots. The Angel has built-in stereo Bluetooth connectivity and a multitude of input and output jacks, as well as an integrated flight computer, all designed to help the ag-pilot manage operations via his cell phone while on the ground reloading.

and to control your Bluetooth MP3 player directly. This enables you to put your phone in your pocket, and use the Angel as the interface. It’s almost like having a mounted cellphone right in your cockpit. During the design phase, ComLinkPro wanted to make sure you could connect

pretty much anything to the Angel, so there are both a cell phone and stereo audio jack for wired connections, in addition to an audio output jack to record radio communications or to provide narration while videotaping. All pilots are sure to love the large, brightly colored, daylight readable screen. The auto-dimming feature means that the screen and keypad are easy to read on the brightest days and will dim appropriately for the darkest cockpit, making it easy to navigate Angel’s intuitive menus. Even the technologically challenged will find navigating between the phone, the MP3
player and the flight functions a snap. The lithium ion battery will keep your Angel going longer than you can stay in the seat and provides headset power so you can still use all of the features out of the plane. Calling a briefer from a noisy ramp or a customer while refueling and loading has never been so easy. After 15+ hours of use, it charges through a standard Mini-USB port that also doubles as the PC interface for downloading updates. Staying up to date with the latest software and features is simply a matter of a small download from www.comlinkpro.com.

hands-on flying
Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@yahoo.com
Spotlighted The AT-402 and I were boring through darkness in a place affectionately known as “Doom Valley”. It was an exceptionally dark night. The upper air was swirling around like a dog chasing its tail; it was rough as an old dirt road. I was to scheduled to spray 40 acres of head lettuce that was under siege by a regiment of army worms. My spotter reported the field was clear. I circled once, noted the tall wires to the south and the houses to the east and decided that dealing with the wires would be better than turning over the houses. I dove in and went to work. It was white knuckle, full sensory flying in turbulent air and oppressive darkness. I was on my third or fourth pass on the west side of the field when a car pulled
up along the road next to the wires. I flashed my work lights to try to warn it away. I figured it was just somebody who wanted to watch an impromptu air show. Suddenly the cockpit was filled with a brilliant flash of light! Wham! My pupils slammed shut with a bang that nearly made my ears ring. I yanked the spray handle off and hauled back on the stick hoping to clear the on rushing wires as my vision exploded before me. I climbed and put the airplane in as much a straight and level attitude as I could while I tried to clear the fireworks from my eyes. “What the hell was that?” I exclaimed to myself as I turned back toward the field.
When I approached a second time, the light swept across the airplane and back into the cockpit! I repeated my previous exclamation and saw that the light was being trained on me from the car below. I attempted to ignore the assault and tried a couple more passes. But the spotlight guy’s determination only grew stronger, while his accuracy improved. Anger swelled up inside me, bursting into rage. I was under attack and my instinct was to strike back. I flashed my lights again and dove at the car thinking at first only of retaliation and not the tall wires that he was parked next to. I pulled up sharply as a twinkle of common sense entered. I am usually an easy going guy, but
there was murder in my heart when I radioed my spotter to vector him to the scene and confront whoever was wielding that spotlight with orders to disarm, subdue and eliminate if necessary. My spotter takes his job and the safety of his pilot very seriously. Not surprisingly, the spotlight guy’s audacity faded quickly when he was approached on the ground. There was a tirade of information coming over the radio from the cockpit of my airplane. The guy declined an invitation to the airstrip in order to explore the digestive qualities of spotlights. Apparently he was having a bad day and the airplane was getting on his nerves. I was furious and

wanted to wring the guy’s neck and… well, you get the picture. I finished the field and returned to the airstrip. I climbed out of the cockpit to cool off my heated temper. I was not in the right frame of mind to operate an airplane safely. I was experiencing a bad case of “road rage”.
I thought of calling the Sheriff, but how long would it take for someone with a badge to arrive in the far reaches of the county in order to make a report? Cooled off and fangs retracted, I climbed back into the airplane and resumed my work. My thoughts played out the incident and the gravity of my reaction. I wondered how many agpilots had met their maker by falling victim to a case of “road rage”? I wondered how many are climbing into
the cockpit with their minds wrapped around an emotional issue, instead of locked onto the business of flying? I would bet there has been more than a few. There are a lot of dynamics in every person’s life that affects his ability to concentrate and make decisions. There are those who actually try to get others rattled as an extension of their own ego with no concern of the possible consequences. People with spotlights are but one example. As professional aviators, we bear the responsibility to operate our aircraft in the safest, most efficient manner possible. Outside influences that negatively affect our mental state are a threat we have to deal with often. Keeping a cool head and a steady hand when under this kind of stress doesn’t come easy. However, it is what could make the difference between making money or making the headlines. Remember, just when you think everything is going great, somebody is bound to come along and screw it up. Plan on it.

EVENDALE, OHIO – GE Aviation is offering M601 Line Maintenance Training at its Customer Technical Education Center (CTEC) in Cincinnati, Ohio. There are two sessions available – March 7 to 8 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 1. The first two M601E Line Maintenance courses were held at CTEC last year. The Air Transport Authority (ATA) level III course includes classroom and hands-on training for line maintenance mechanics and aircraft operators. Instructors will provide training on inspections, layout and operation, engine airflow, oil systems and components, fuel systems and components, exhaust systems, reduction gearboxes, air inlet, compressor section, power turbine section, combustion chambers, engine maintenance practices and general troubleshooting. To reserve your slot, contact Jennifer at cts.scheduling@ae.ge.com. For any questions regarding the course, contact Andy Pierson at andrew.pierson@ge.com. For more information about CTEC, visit http://geaviation.com/services/ctec. GE Aviation’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops has more than 1,600 M601 engines in service that have accumulated more than 17 million flight hours on 30 applications. The M601E-11 engine is the workhorse version of the proven M601 series engines for use in agriculture and utility aircraft applications. With no hot section inspection requirement and an internal fuel slinger free of recurrent fuel nozzle maintenance, the M601E engine provides distinct cost-of-ownership advantages. Flight testing on the H80 engine
continues on the Thrush 510G aircraft. The H80 engine is undergoing certification testing and will power business and general aviation, utility and agriculture aircraft. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine compared with the M601 engine, with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will also feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls, significantly enhanced hot-day takeoff performance and high-altitude cruise speeds. The H80 will provide the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers flexibility in propeller selection. GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft.
