Good to the Last Crop. High yields don’t come easy. But for the folks who fly a Thrush, they come a whole lot easier. It’s not surprising since every Thrush offers superb visibility, speed, and maneuverability. Not to mention parts that withstand the test of time, weather, and plenty of long workdays. All so you can fly more hours than in any other ag plane. It’s what has made Thrush the favorite of some of the biggest crop dusting operations in more than 80 countries. And counting. Get the straight story on what’s happening at Thrush Aircraft. Visit us online or call Eric Rojek at 229.789.0437.

Kris Artman (MS) sure “dressing up” the picture.
Who made the first airplane flight?
Well, the answer to that question depends on who you ask and the accepted definition of an airplane. If you attended a typical American school, you learned Wilbur Wright flew the first airplane. However, if you attended a Brazilian school, you were told the first airplane flight was piloted by Alberto Santos Dumont. The answer to the question is determined by the definition of an airplane. The Wright brothers did not make the first flight, since gliders were in fashion long before 1903. In 1906, Brazilian Santos Dumont made the first airplane flight by definition; an aircraft is a machine that can take off on its own power, land on its gear and then fly again without attachments. This is exactly what Santos Dumont’s “14 Bis” did in France, a total of six times. The last and longest flight was 720 feet at a height of 15 feet. Later, he made the first “trip” in an airplane when he flew the 22nd aircraft he had built, “Demoiselle”, from St. Cyr to land at Wideville Castle 12 miles away traveling at 60 MPH. The Wright brothers’ “Flyer I” needed a catapult and a rail system to launch it. It was not able to take off, land and take
off again under its own power, therefore, it was not an airplane by strict definition. If you look back at history, others had made flights that did not qualify as the first airplane flight. These were gliders, one in particular being towed by a motorboat 60 feet above the Seine River. The craft flew, but it was not an “airplane”. Many will argue that the Wright brothers were the first ones to have heavier-than-air powered flight. Even that is not true, since there were powered hot air balloons before 1903. So, how does the flight of “Flyer I” on the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills become credited with the first airplane flight? If you believe a discussion about whether the Wright brothers were the first to fly a heavier-than-air-powered aircraft, or was it Santos Dumont, would be interesting, don’t leave out numerous others that claim to be the first; a New Zealand farmer, an inventor from India, even a Smithsonian secretary! The controversy usually focuses on the Wright brothers and Santos Dumont. Who deserves which recognition falls upon the definition of the first to fly an airplane. The Smithsonian Institution

defines the Wright brothers’ “Flyer I” as the first heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustain flight. When a twist of the definition includes taking off and landing repeatedly, like one would expect of an airplane, then the kudos fall upon Santos Dumont. The Smithsonian’s definition taken literally could include a powered hot air balloon, if it was controllable. How controllable was the “Flyer I” is debatable. Regardless of definition of an airplane and who made the first flight in one, both the Wright brothers and Santos Dumont were extremely talented men. Their efforts eventually led to today’s aviation that includes ag-aviation. I am sure glad they had the courage and foresight to get it done! Be sure to read Ernesto Franzen’s article in this edition of AgAir Update about the controversy over who made the first airplane flight. You’ll find the article interesting reading at the least. questions Months ago I contacted you by email for information about Thrush. Today, I need information about: 1.- Cost per acre on different rate of water. 2.- How many acres make Thrush or Air Tractor with Walter engine/hour. 3.- How much is cost of operation per hour. 4.- How many years or hours to return the investment on bought the plane with Walter engine conversion 5.- Intervals of maintenance of this engine and cost. Do you have any contact with somebody with information about this. Thank You Jorge Monreal Sonora, Mexico
Hola Jorge; How are things in Mexico? The questions you ask me are too ambiguous. So many factors are involved, like how far to ferry the aircraft, the part of the country where the operation is based, how large are the fields, etc. It is impossible to correctly answer the questions you ask, as they would differ for different locations and different operators. I apologize that I can’t give you an answer. Try posting your questions on the agairupdate.com forum, maybe you will get a better answer, or at least one from a Walter Thrush operator about his personal experiences.—Bill

drought How are you doing? Hope fine.. we keep updated thanks to your newspaper. I “stole” a lot of articles from the “Spreading the Facts” web page. I translated and published them in a regional newspaper here. Please let me know if you think this was OK. Maybe you know of our situation here in Argentina, especially in the central area, the most productive of all the country. We are having the biggest drought in more than 70 years, 80% of the corn is lost and the remaining 20% is waiting for water this week or it will be lost, too. We expected to fly on a lot of fungicide over corn, but our Air Tractors are still waiting to get out of the hangar! Soybeans can hold on a little longer, but they are in a critical situation, too, hoping for rain within the next 10 days. The height of crop is to low, so the firs weapon of farmers is the ground sprayer... so, the season 2011 - 2012 has become really complicated for us. However, we still have a hope for February and March. If everything continues bad, I will ask you to help me find a flying seat in
any ag plane in the US! That is all for now, Francisco Casajus Argentina Hola Francisco; I regret to learn of the drought in Argentina. stc I want to know if there is any stc or if it’s legal to add a front seat in a Grumman AG-164 year 1968 with a Jacobs engine. Thanks for your help. Jorge Cebollero
Hello Jorge; In the U.S. and most any country I know of, it would not be legal, without an STC or a FAA 337, to add a front seat to any single seat aircraft. However, there have been front seats added to Ag-Cats, not sure which models. I have copied Flying Tiger Aviation with our email, since they own one, as does Rod Thomas, who I have also copied. Maybe they can provide a more specific answer to your question. Or, maybe someone else will read our emails and contact you. Good luck—Bill My “two-hole” Ag Cat is a light frame 1960 model. It was converted using Form 337 and was one of many that Jim Krepps converted in 20 + years. In today’s regulation environment, I think it would be very hard to duplicate his work. Deposition and swath testing of the Thrush 510P
by Alan McCracken Last August, Thrush Aircraft, Inc. contracted me to conduct a series of tests with various spray volumes and equipment to determine the effective swath width for the Thrush 510P aircraft with various spray volumes and drop sizes. The goal was to maximize productivity. The aircraft was flown by Thrush Aircraft’s Terry Humphrey at the Thrush factory in Albany, Georgia. The flying speed for all treatments was 140 mph. The aircraft was outfitted with several nozzle/atomizer set ups; FF1550 (flat fan), FF6510, CPllTT, D8-45, D4-45 and Micronair AU5000 rotary atomizers. Weather conditions were hot and dry with temperatures up to 37°C (98°F) and relative humidity as low as 45%. Under more normal spraying conditions with chemical products the droplet sizes collected would be larger, since it would suffer less from evaporation loss. The swath width is a function of several factors including, flying speed and weight of the aircraft, wing span, spray volume, droplet size, crosswind component, height and density of the crop. The pilot must adjust the swath width to match the crop and the target pest to maximize the performance of the aircraft. He should be conscious of conditions that make it necessary to reduce the swath width for improved crop penetration. In essence, the shorter and more open the crop, the wider the swath, while using narrow swaths for tall dense canopies. I concluded that with both nozzles and rotary atomizers, wider swaths may be effectively used when spraying lower volumes with smaller droplet sizes. This was due in large part to the wing design and velocity of the Thrush aircraft. Using the Micronair AU5000, the effective swath is 33 meters (108 feet) with a 40% CV, flying into the wind. This means a short crop could accurately be treated using a 33-meter swath and have a much lower %CV with a crosswind.

Increasing the blade angle of the atomizers reduces the rpm and increases the droplet size.
Swath width (meters) Higher spray volumes and larger droplets result in narrower swaths, since the larger droplets tend to fall directly beneath the aircraft. This in effect means a waste of chemical, since these large droplets often represent a major percentage of the spray volume. With the flat fan nozzles FF1550 and a high volume application of 54 liters/hectare [5.8 GPA) and angled down at 90 degrees produce an acceptable droplet spectrum that would contribute to good results with systemic products.
Size of drops (microns)

agairupdate.com
With a minimal risk for “off-target” drift, it is important to note that with so many large droplets, still, almost 2% of the spray volume collected was in droplets less than 150 microns, demonstrating the production of large droplets does not mean the elimination of “fines”.
Swath width (meters) The above graph demonstrates theoretical coverage at varying swath widths showing the number of droplets per cm² on the left hand scale and the percentage variation of the swath at varying swath widths on the right hand scale. Even with the very high spray volume the effective swath has only a modest variation when increased from 21 to 30 meters as indicated by the red line.

Changing the angle of the flat fan CPllTT nozzles from 0 degrees back to 90 degrees down had a dramatic effect on reducing the average droplet size and increasing the number of droplets collected from 23 to 109 droplets/cm². This change in droplet size is due to the increased shear caused by the airspeed of the aircraft. The volume of a spray droplet = [4/3 π r3]. This means a cubic relationship, such that a droplet of 200 microns diameter, has the same volume as eight droplets of 100 microns. For example, in practical terms a ball containing 24 gallons of water is only twice the diameter of a ball containing three gallons. In our discussion, VMD = Volume median diameter in microns; NMD = Number median diameter microns; VMD:NMD or Relative Span, when this value is 1:1 this confirms the presence of a uniform droplet spectrum. Dvo.1 is a value that signifies that 10% of the volume is under this drop size. Dvo.5 is a value that means 50% of the volume is under this drop size. Dvo.9 is a value that means that 90% of the volume is under this drop size. For the safe application of herbicides it is preferable to select nozzles and adjust the equipment to produce the minimum number of spray droplets under 150 microns [drift prone fines]. While some of the nozzles tested met this parameter, a major part of the spray volume was in very large droplets of 400 microns and larger resulting in poor coverage and essentially a waste of chemical product due to poor penetration with the larger droplets. When using water sensitive papers, positioned at an angle of 45° facing into the wind,it must be emphasized that artificial collectors only collect a sample of the droplets produced and is far from being an absolute value. Furthermore, the number of droplets collected is dramatically affected by the wind speed and variations in wind direction due to the aerodynamic behavior of small droplets. In practical terms, smaller droplets are seldom collected on artificial targets at low air speeds, since they simply float past the cards. In several tests, cards were placed horizontally on the ground and it was very apparent these cards collected very few droplets. The number of droplets collected on any collector paper, glass or other material depends on a series of factors including, droplet size, wind speed, surface area and angle of collector. Large droplets are easily collected on a horizontal or inclined surface, the smaller the droplet the less likely it will be deposited on a horizontal surface. With a higher wind speed fewer droplets will be collected on horizontal cards for which reason no small droplets are found on horizontal cards when the wind speed is 8-10 mph or more. In some of the treatments, we experienced variable winds, both in speed and direction, that resulted in low collection efficiency. The larger the surface area of the collector the fewer droplets will be collected and vice versa, a very small collector card will collect proportionally more droplets. Multiple trials over many years have proven without doubt the optimal angle for utilization of water sensitive cards is to place them at 45° facing the wind. The use of very large nozzle orifices such as the FF1550, produced a very broad droplet spectrum when operated at 0° and 45°, providing very poor coverage and a waste of most of the product from a technical standpoint due to the very large droplets confirmed by the values for Dvo.5 and Dvo.9. However, these same nozzles when angled down at 90° produced a much more uniform droplet size. The last two nozzles on each wingtip were isolated to reduce the risk of droplets entering the wingtip vortices. The spray deposits were analyzed using the Stainmaster 1.2.6 software program from Argentina. It is important to note the analysis was based on droplets

LIGHT - OVERHAUL 1.) A light overhaul does not increase the value of your engine as a zero TSO will. 2.) A light overhaul on average can make your aircraft worth $150,000.00 less than an aircraft with a zero TSO entry. Today we live in a world market and with the advent of the internet your trade has a good chance of spending its next life in a different country which requires an engine under TBO. 3.) A light overhaul does not address the whole engine, only specific parts that are called out in the work scope. Twenty years ago a light overhaul was called an IRAN, the only difference being that in most shops a IRAN consisted of looking at the whole engine (all of the parts). An IRAN was represented to be just that. Not to politicize the word overhaul, a low cost zero time overhaul consists of using overhauled parts and Pratt & Whitney vendors, as needed, in a low overhead shop where the savings could be passed on. We are a shop that has been overhauling PT6’s for over 30 years and that gives you one price and sticks to it. A light overhaul very seldom meets the advertised price. Remember, if meeting the price was the target, then some needed work would have to be left unaccomplished on a light overhaul. On a zero TSO overhaul every single part of the whole engine has to be addressed and returned to Pratt & Whitney overhaul spec’s. If you need a (Light overhaul?) Turbines, Inc. can do a proper IRAN at lower cost than any other shop. Turbines, Inc. was the very first shop to do IRANS on ag engines starting in 1981. And after more than 30 years, the same mechanics at Turbines, Inc. are doing them today. No disrespect intended, but some of the other shops were not in the PT6 business then and their present day mechanics were not even born yet. 4.) To sum it up, experience equates to lower pricing, better quality of work (safety & reliability), plus you have someone you can call who has operational experience. As a footnote, Turbines, Inc. has had a “137 certificate” since 1986 and operates three “500 gallon -34” airplanes. We understand the language you speak when you call us for advice or need help to get you going again. Most of the mechanics here are war veterans going back to the Vietnam era and are of that work ethic. We have always been known to tell the truth and we consider it a point of honor to stick by our quotes. If all of this raises any questions about light overhauls, IRANS, or Zero time engine overhauls, give me a call any time at 812-877-2587 or my cell phone at 812-249-0364.

collected and are not absolute values, however may be used for comparison purposes since only minimal changes in wind speed and direction during the tests. From a technical standpoint, many of the treatments had a very high value for the DMV, with values for Dvo.1, Dvo.5 and Dvo.9 confirming a very broad droplet spectrum as indicated in the summary data table. If a contact acting insecticide/fungicide was applied, it would achieve poor penetration as a consequence of the large droplet size and therefore produce only mediocre results. The operator must be aware that contact action requires insect/disease contact to achieve control. All tests with nozzles indicated a higher deposit under the fuselage due the presence of nozzles too close to the fuselage. Practical experience with hundreds of aircraft in South America have demonstrated clearly that no nozzles are required under the fuselage and also that the inboard nozzles or atomizers should be positioned at least 60 cm (24 inches) or more away from the fuselage. The pattern changes significantly
when smaller spray droplets are produced with the air turbulence opening the swath making it wider and more uniform. However, this is not
feasible with larger droplets that are more influenced by gravity and fall underneath the aircraft.

The great AmericanBrazilian controversy: who invented the airplane? by Ernesto Franzen This controversy is not about who flew the first heavier-than-air machine, but about who flew the first airplane - a machine that can take off under its own power, land on its gear, then fly again without any attachments. I was visiting with our editor, Bill Lavender, and telling him about how moved I was at seeing the Wright Flyer at the National Air and Space Museum, despite the fact that Brazilians learn in school that Santos Dumont invented the airplane, and are told virtually nothing about the Wright brothers. Considering that the opposite happens in America, Bill asked me to write this article for the benefit of AAU readers. So here is the Santos Dumont history.
a 19th century nerd Alberto Santos Dumont was born in 1873 to Henrique Dumont, an engineer working with the top technology of his day, building railroads on the steep hills of Minas Gerais, and Francisca de Paula Santos, whose very wealthy family owned a large coffee farm. Coffee was the main Brazilian export commodity in those days. After Alberto was born, his father accepted his father-in-law offer to become a manager for the family’s farm. He was so successful at it that soon he started his own coffee farm, which in a few years was the most advanced coffee farm in the world. Among other innovations, it had a private 60-mile railroad running through it to transport the harvested coffee beans. Alberto grew up operating its Baldwin locomotive and reading Jules Vernes’ books and thus
developed his yearning for machines. When Alberto was 17 years old, in 1891, his father suffered an accident, falling out of a racing horse buggy. His left side became partially paralyzed. A pragmatic man, he sold the farm for the then highest-ever price for a farm in Brazil and started living off the money. Next, Henrique traveled to France, then leading the world in most areas of knowledge, to look for a cure for his paralysis. He took young Alberto with him and there they watched a demonstration of the latest mechanical device: the internal combustion gasoline engine. Upon seeing it, Alberto turned to his father and said, “Dad, I see this engine hanging under a gas balloon, navigating through the air like a ship, with me steering it. Foolish, isn’t it?’’ Returning to Brazil, he gave Alberto his

must study physics, chemistry, electricity, etc. Excel at mechanics, that’s where the future is. Don’t worry about making a living, I’m giving you money more than enough for all your needs for a lifetime.” Unfortunately, Henrique didn’t see his son’s deeds; he died a few days after Alberto arrived in Paris. In the beginning, except for his studies, Alberto lived a playboy life in Paris; he bought one of the first gasoline automobiles, dated celebrities and organized the first motorcycle race ever.
Center Boom
But not for his passion for sports – he wanted to evaluate the performance and reliability of the novel gasoline engines under harsh conditions. And in fact, some of his first airships later used motorcycle engines. In 1898, Santos Dumont finally had the chance to ride in a balloon; he took his Kodak camera along and documented the flight with several pictures, what would later become a habit of his. More important, he was forever smitten by the flying bug. Soon, he commissioned the
construction of his own balloon. It was the smallest hydrogen balloon ever, so small that many, including its makers, said it would never fly. Named “Brazil”, it surprised everybody by flying very well. Not because Santos Dumont was a very small man - 5 feet 3 inches tall and 110 pounds – but because Santos Dumont innovated by using a thinner (and much lighter) gas bag of Japanese silk, which he discovered was much stronger than the Chinese silk being used for balloons.
the first airship Soon, Santos Dumont started pursuing his vision of an airship. Other inventors had tried to fly airships by rigging steam and electrical engines under them; evidently, their weight prevented them from flying. Everybody considered it too dangerous to mate a gas engine to a hydrogen balloon and they even tried to ban Santos Dumont from doing it. However, he knew that any leaks of the lighter hydrogen would go up, so he turned down the exhaust pipes of his

At a later commemorative dinner, Santos Dumont complained to watchmaker Louis Cartier about his difficulty in taking his watch from his pocket to check on his flight time while piloting the airship. He then asked Cartier to make him a small square watch to be tied to his wrist by a strap, thus inventing the wristwatch. To this day, Cartier has a “Santos Dumont” collection in their catalogue. After winning the Deutsch Prize, Santos Dumont became a world-wide celebrity, even visiting the United States and meeting Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Alva Edison, among others. He kept on perfecting his airships, making them smaller and more maneuverable and taking people (including some notable dames) for flights. Most notable was number 9, dubbed “Baladeuse” (“hiker”) which he even landed in a Paris street to drink coffee!
14Bis – the first airplane In 1905, a group of members of the Aeroclub de France formed FAI Fédération Aéronautique Internationale
Santos Dumont flying the 14Bis at Bagatelle field. – to among other things, certify records in the aeronautical field. Of course, they didn’t recognize the Wright brothers flight, because Orville and Wilbur were being very coy about it at the time. That same year, Santos Dumont watched Gabriel Voisin using a motorboat to tow a glider 60 feet above the Seine river. That experience allowed him to estimate the power necessary to fly an airplane with the aerodynamics of those days. He set on designing his first airplane. For the best aerodynamic efficiency, it was a canard biplane design, made of the lightest materials Santos Dumont could find – bamboo, silk and a few small parts made of aluminum, a very exotic (and expensive) material at the time. Initially powered by a 25 HP Levavasseur Antoinette engine at the

rear, it was called 14Bis because Santos Dumont hung it from his airship number 14, forming a hybrid aircraft, for the first flight tests. It was 32 feet long and had a wingspan of 39 feet. Still influenced by his airship designs, the “cockpit” was a wicker basket, where Santos Dumont stood up. Its controls initially were comprised only by the front cell, which doubled as rudder and elevators; Santos Dumont expected that the 10-degree dihedral and rudder would be enough to steer it laterally. The gas bag was quickly abandoned when they found the airplane weight (352 pounds) was tearing it apart. Instead, Santos Dumont hung a steel cable between two poles, one higher than the other, and allowed 14Bis to slide down the cable so he could estimate its center of gravity and stability. September 13, 1906, Santos Dumont was ready for the 14Bis first try. Unfortunately, he only managed a two-foot hop and damaged one of the landing gear wheels. It was clear that the 14Bis needed more power. So he replaced the engine with another Levavasseur, a V8 with 50 HP. The
morning of October 23rd, at the Bagatelle Field in the Bois de Boulogne with the FAI board waiting to certify the flight and a cheering crowd of over a thousand parisians, Santos Dumont made the 14Bis take off by its own means, flying for seven seconds a distance of 200 feet at a height varying between seven and ten feet, landing undamaged on its wheels. Today, October 23rd is Aviator’s Day in Brazil. Santos Dumont later claimed the only reason the flight was so short was because he couldn’t control the airplane. Convinced rudder alone wasn’t enough to steer his airplane, Santos Dumont added ailerons to the middle of the outer wing cells with cables linked to his coat, so he actuated them by tilting his body. November 12th, Santos Dumont flew the modified 14Bis six times, the last and longest flight reaching 720 feet at a height of 15 feet. Some of these flights were filmed by the Pathé movie company; if you can stand the Portuguese narration, you can see some images of this flight and his later experiences here: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=vhE7UPOlmeQ . Like most early projects, 14Bis was unstable and eventually crashed,
without consequences to Santos Dumont. Unfortunately, no one realized its historical value and it was scrapped.
solving controllability Having mastered the problem of power; weight, Santos Dumont realized he had to find a way to make his airplane stable and controllable. He finally understood, while building a speedboat, that the controls – rudder and elevators - had to be at the rear for the aircraft to be
stable. Then he started designing his masterpiece – the Demoiselle (Dragonfly). Santos Dumont started by designing a two-cylinder water-cooled engine, which had the best power-to-weight ratio of the day, developing 30 HP, commissioning the Daracq company to build it. Then he built a conventional high-wing monoplane, with a conventional tail and wing-warping bank control, with the pilot seated under the wing. With a

wingspan of only 16.4 feet, it weighted only 242 pounds. Santos Dumont went through three configurations between 1907 and 1909, before reaching the “definitive” Demoiselle. The first version (number 19) had two props driven by chains like the Wright flyer; just like the Wright brothers, Santos Dumont had trouble making this setup work, but unlike them, he gave up on it and number 19 never flew. After some experiments, Santos Dumont
built number 22, the final Demoiselle. It is considered the first practical airplane in the world; fully controllable, Santos Dumont flew several public demonstrations in it. It was the first airplane to take off from a field, St. Cyr, and land on another, at the Wideville Castle, 12 miles away, making it the first air trip. It held the first official FAI speed record, at 60 mph on that trip, and also the first short takeoff record, of only 196 feet on a later demonstration.
The Demoiselle’s high speed prevented Santos Dumont from wearing his trademark hat.
One late afternoon in September 1909, Santos Dumont took off in worsening weather and went missing. His mechanics launched a search party the next morning, to find the Demoiselle parked intact on the lawn in front of a wealthy family house, where Santos Dumont had spent the night as a guest. Despite the happy ending, he confided to friends he had felt “dizzy and sick” during that flight and they referred him to the best neurologist in Paris. Unfortunately, the doctor diagnosed the beginning of multiple sclerosis, the same disease that had driven Santos Dumont’s mother to suicide in 1902 the disease forbade Santos Dumont from further flying. However, Santos Dumont made a last demonstration with the Demoiselle, September 18, 1909, flying over a crowd while holding a handkerchief in each outstretched hand, thereby proving Demoiselle was stable enough for hands-free flying. He then announced he would give Demoiselle blueprints for free to anyone interested; several publications printed them, including Popular Mechanics magazine in the US. Thanks to this, many museums have exact Demoiselle replicas today, some of

when a near-exact replica was built for the movie Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, they had to hire a female stunt pilot to fly it. Santos Dumont lived on as a celebrity, receiving honors wherever he went. After World War I, he alternated periods living in Europe and in Brazil, until 1932, when, possibly in a bout of sclerosisinduced depression, he watched an airplane being used to bomb and strafe fellow Brazilians in the Constitutional Revolution. That night, he took his own life by hanging himself with his necktie. Despite several public affairs, he never married, nor had any children.
the controversy Santos Dumont’s flights were the moon landings of the day; they were watched by crowds, photographed and even filmed. Most important, they were certified by FAI’s sanctioning body. When they heard of the 14Bis flight, the Wright brothers stepped out and revealed their 1903 flight, with only a few witnesses and a picture as proof. No wonder then, that the Wright brothers claims were received with skepticism. Only in 1908 did FAI recognize their flight – and that only increased the controversy; Wright
brothers defenders simply point to the 1903 flight; Santos Dumont defenders counter by saying Flyer I needed a catapult and so didn’t take off under its own power, and had skids that needed a rail for the take off run, instead of a landing gear that allowed it to take off from any level surface. Wright brothers defenders say Santos Dumont outsourced the 14Bis engine, instead of designing his own; Santos Dumont defenders claim virtually all airplane makers nowadays do the same. The argument will probably never end. I’d like to honor all three men; they were undoubtedly very bright and ingenuous and extremely brave. Just think of the lump in your throat during your first solo, now imagine that without the hours of dual you had before – without even seeing an airplane fly before! I think we can make justice by saying the Wright brothers did the first heavierthan-air flight, while Santos Dumont flew the first airplane – flying under its own power with a landing gear that only required a level surface long enough for take off and landing. by Christophe Druarte France Bad news in Europe. After several years of fighting a ridiculous law, aerial spraying is banned in Europe. In France, we have some derogation on rice, bananas, maize and vineyards, but with so many restrictions I estimate in less than two years it will be ended completely. I participated in Brussels and Paris meetings about this law and I saw that civil servants and officials made a decision without referring to any survey or statistics. All arguments from the industry were useless. It was a political decision just because of prejudices. Now, a lot of spraying is done by ground machines with terrible effects on drift
and the health of operators; the cure is worse than the problem. I noticed one thing in all of the discussions. The common point of all opponents of aerial spraying - they have never seen a plane or helicopter spraying, nor a ground machine spraying for that matter. The perceived way of life in Europe, and certainly in the world, is about an Utopian dream of natural and organic, think of rich European people, but who can’t feed the world. In 1985, there were 45 aerial spraying companies in France, in 2002: 12, in 2012: 4. What is in the future? Fortunately for me and some of my colleagues, we still have some work in Africa and other foreign countries.

growers looking to control yield-robbing diseases, maximize yield potential and realize Plant Health benefits.” Growers continue to recognize that Headline and Headline AMPfungicides are the leaders in the crop fungicide market in disease control and Plant Health. Both of these products provide ample benefits to growers, including stress tolerance, better standability and improved yield potential, all of which may positively impact a grower’s bottom line. In on-farm research results from 20102011, Headline AMP showed consistent yield advantages of more than 12.8 bu/A in corn over untreated acres in 137 corn trials. Headline, the most researched fungicide on the market, provided consistent soybean yield advantages of more than 4.6 bu/A over untreated acres in 260 soybean trials, while regularly
outperforming competitive products. “Headline and Headline AMP were brought to the row crop market after years of research highlighting disease control and Plant Health,” Rea said. “These products are part of a growing
portfolio of BASF fungicides, which will continue to expand in the coming years. BASF invests a great deal of resources in research and development to bring innovative products to the market to help growers be more successful.”

in my opinion
Bad judgement There are three situations that have come to mind recently regarding bad judgment calls in ag aviation. I am sure you can think of others that could have ended in tragic results or, at the very least, bent the metal of an airplane. The first situation that presents itself is the dumb decision to fly when weather conditions absolutely preclude even getting in the cockpit. In My Opinion, the most insidious danger to an ag pilot regarding weather is fog. This is just one reason why I advocate ag pilots have an instrument rating: as an instrument rated ag pilot, I myself have flown into an airport enshrouded in light fog; so light in fact,
that there is no visual problems when looking straight down through the fog. However, on short final, and 10 – 30 feet above the touchdown point, suddenly your forward visibility goes to zero! I also think when ferrying an ag plane, you have the potential to find yourself in this situation, more often than not. An instrument rating will give the pilot an invaluable respect for and insight into flying into marginal VFR conditions. Additionally, if the young ag pilot were to decide spraying was not for him/her, but wanted to go into some other field of aviation, an instrument rating is a prerequesite. In My Opinion, a non-instrument rated ag pilot taking

off in marginal VFR/IFR weather is a classic exercise in poor judgment. The second situation that I often ponder is precision landings. An ag pilot should be the master of the spot landing. Recently, I heard of an ag pilot landing on what should have been an adequately long enough air strip, but came in so fast in the AT602 (did not even use reverse) ran into structures on the end of the runway, doing heavy damage to the airplane. In My Opinion, this was not only a serious lack of piloting skills, but also an equally serious lack of good judgment. Now I am not advocating making the final approach deep into the “region of

reverse command”, also known as the “back side of the power curve”, but just like you were taught when working on your private pilot’s license, you could safely approach at 8-10 mph over the power off stall speed, such that when you close the throttle, she will sit right there with a nice firm three-point-thump. The third and final point to ponder: an ag pilot should be sitting on the very edge of his seat, acutely aware when scooting along at 145 mph and 8 feet above the crop. When applying the aeronautical cliché, “situational awareness” to ag flying, the bar is raised skyward. In the event of a large bird, wire strike, encountering a stall, sudden accelerated stall on the pull-up over trees or hitting a rice levee with a landing gear, etc., the correct reaction should be a reflex, not a reaction. And so...be safe, have fun and make money.

wing and a prayer
Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com
Appointment with death and judgment “It is appointed for men to die once, but after that the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Every person on this planet has an appointment with death—we can’t escape it. The statistics are impressive, 100 percent out of 100 people will die. The Psalmist wrote, “What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?” (Psalm 89:48). Solomon said, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2). Many times there
is no forewarning of our appointment with death. Death is often swift and without any warning. No person has a guarantee of another day, hour or minute of life—we don’t know when our death will happen—we are all just one breath away from our appointment with death. A person cannot live beyond the days appointed by God (Job 14:5). When we were young we had the feeling of immortality, death seemed to be far out in the future; we didn’t think about it much. But as we grow older
we begin to think about our mortality. It’s not as easy to jump out of bed in the morning or jump upon the plane to get in the cockpit. We ease our self down off the plane, no jumping down off the wing for fear of springing or breaking something. Those long hours in the plane or helicopter begin to take their toll on our mind and body as we grow older. We hear about our friends, some old and some young, that have passed on and we sometimes wonder when our time will come. Some men and women who have really good
genetics and by God’s grace, may live to be over 100 years old, but you can be sure they will eventually die. Job wrote, “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He comes forth like a flower and fades away; he flees like a shadow and does not continue” (Job 14:1-2). Belshazzar was having a drunken party when a hand appeared and wrote words on the wall that no one could understand. Daniel interpreted the writing and told Belshazzar, “You have been weighed in the balances

and found wanting because you lifted yourself above God, in whose hand your very breath is.” Belshazzar was killed that night by the Mede and Persian army (Daniel 5:1-30). The rich man’s crops yielded so much that he decided to build bigger barns to store his crops, and take life easy. But the Lord said, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:16-21). Here are two men who died before they got the chance to enjoy their power and wealth. “God has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Acts 17:26). After death the judgment! The Bible over and over affirms that there will be a day of judgment for all mankind. Paul told the philosophers on mars hill in Athens, “God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ whom He has ordained” (Acts 17:31). Paul told the church in Rome that
God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ (Romans 2:16). Paul told Timothy that Jesus Christ will judge the living and the dead at His coming (2 Timothy 4:1). Jude wrote, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him” (Jude 14-15).
The Bible over and over affirms that there will be a day of judgment for all mankind. There are two different judgments for humanity mentioned in the Bible. To Christians Paul wrote, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good EASA Certified Repair Station EASA.145.6252

or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10). The judgment seat of Christ is for believers; it is not a place of condemnation. If a Christian’s works are good (like gold, silver and precious stones) there will be rewards. If a Christian’s works are not good (like wood, hay and straw) they will be burned up by God’s fire, and the Christian will suffer loss; but the Christian is saved and will enter into heaven (1 Corinthians 3:9-15). Some of our works that look good to us will be burned up because our motive was wrong. Some of our works that looked like a failure to us will receive reward because our motive was good. Jesus Christ knows our every thought and motive (Matthew 9:4, 12:25). The judgment for unbelievers is very different than that of a Christian. John wrote, “I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then
Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:11-15). God loves you more than you can imagine, and wants you to be in heaven for all eternity. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life…I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die” (John 3:16; 11:25-26). Is your name written in God’s Book of Life?

by Tracy Thurman January 9th 2012 was the annual PAASS presentation and meeting of the AzAAA hosted by Custom Farm Air in Stanfield Arizona. PAASS presenters were Doug Thiel, a California operator, and Eric Klindt of Minnesota. The presentation was excellent and provided a lot of insight to fellow pilots. The handful of ag pilots that make up the Arizona roster had a chance to catch up with each other and swap stories over a delicious lunch sponsored by Jet A USA.

about NationAir NationAir, www.nationair.com, combines the influence of a national brokerage with the personal relationships of a local broker. Founded in 1978, it is one of the country’s oldest and largest aviation insurance brokers. NationAir is
headquartered in suburban Chicago and fields representatives in eight locations across the country, with clients in all 50 states and 30 countries. NationAir works with all major underwriters and has pioneered specialized programs to help the general aviation community operate safely.
It’s time to expect more from an aviation insurance broker. A lot more. Many insurance buyers don’t realize just how much they could be getting from a broker—and how much they might be missing. Agricultural aviation requires specialized insurance knowledge. Fortunately, NationAir has provided affordable coverage in this area for over three decades, so we understand all of the details and issues related to the aerial applications business. We provide you with superior customer care, expert advice and unique services such as contract review and dedicated claim advisors.

Last year, I had the privilege of attending the NAAA’s 2010/2011 Leadership Training Program. There, I learned the structure, purpose and positive impact NAAA has on the industry. Not just in the United States, but around the world. Every applicator, regardless of whether they are members of the association or not, have benefited from the NAAA’s hard work. With this in mind, I was astonished to learn that NAAA’s membership rosters are only half full. If you associated with the aerial application industry, you need the NAAA! Imagine for a moment that NAAA
does not exist. Here are a few things that would be absent from our industry: 1. Aerial applicators would not have been the first general aviation sector to return to the skies after 9/11. Timecritical crops would have gone untreated by air resulting in lost revenue for aerial applicators and the chemical companies; and lower yields for growers. 2. Aerial applicators would be paying federal excise tax on aviation fuel, costing each applicator potentially thousands of dollars each year off their bottom lines. 3. There would be no NAAREF (National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation) to conduct research on cutting edge techniques and practices which vastly improves aerial application methods as well as develops and produces various invaluable programs such as P.A.A.S.S., Operation S.A.F.E. and Compaass Rose. The PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) Program, a series of educational lectures, has led to significant reductions in the number of accidents and fatalities in this industry as well as a reduction in drift incidents. Operation S.A.F.E (Self-Regulating Application and Flight Efficiency) is most recognizable for the spray pattern test clinics which has enabled aerial applicators to maximize their applications while simultaneously reducing instances of drift. The Compaass Rose program provides education and guidance for individuals already in or wishing to get into the aerial application business. All of these incredibly important programs sprang from NAAA. It is important to note however that NAAREF is not and cannot be funded by NAAA membership dues. My wife and I had a daughter. She was a young, beautiful, bright girl who was born with limitless potential. There was nothing but her own choices that could have ever stood in her way. She fell victim to the drug culture and the temptations that it offers. On January 2 of this year, she was found dead at our home by her younger sister. She died in her sleep. Dealing with loss and tragedy is a fact of life. In our profession, the loss of a friend or loved one is always a possibility. We live and work in a hazardous environment. We know and accept those conditions when we climb into the cockpit. Training and experience are the tools we use to gain an edge on the hazards we face in our lives. But there is no good way to be prepared for the devastation of death. Simple words and sentences cannot begin to illustrate the roller coaster of emotions or the feelings that overwhelm us. Humans have a need to rationalize events in our lives. I attended the Arizona PAASS presentation. By chance, the main module happened to be dealing with loss and tragedy. I have to say it was difficult to sit through it as my own experiences were so recent. However, the information presented was necessary and I gained insight from the presentation and the telling of others experiences. As my wife and I stumble through this recovery, we have found maintaining communication becomes difficult. The thoughts, regrets and feelings of loss become an all consuming cloud that hangs over us. We find ourselves sitting idly absorbed by the shock, staring bewildered at unanswerable questions. I have noticed a little bit of the light that once danced in my wife’s eyes is now dim. Her smile doesn’t quite turn up as much as before. Perhaps the weight of her loss is so great it bears down on her soul. Our youngest daughter suffers quietly, concentrating on her work and moving forward in
memories will be with us forever. Right now, I can’t honestly say what it is that I’ve learned from this loss. Hindsight only brings unanswerable questions about an empty vessel that once held a beautiful and priceless life. To all of you out there; take care and stay safe, hold onto the ones you love and cherish every day that you have.

by Dennis T. Avery CHURCHVILLE, VA: Africa is the only continent where food production per capita is falling as its population continues to expand. Three-fourths of Africa’s food is produced on small farms that get radically lower crop yields than its experimental farms. Even if these little farms got adequate fertilizer and high-yield seeds, they still wouldn’t get the higher yields produced by First World farmers because of the heavy weed populations fostered by Africa’s high temperatures, high humidity, and intense sunlight. A Nigerian field has an estimated 200 million weed seeds per hectare! African women are courting disabling diseases as they spend 300 hours per hectare per season to hand-weed a field of corn. The weeds also limit too many

Add herbicides to Africa’s rescue plan African families to one acre of low-yield corn per year. The kids are weeding instead of going to school because the family has to eat. The men have gone to the cities because poor roads mean they can’t earn a living selling farm products from their villages, even if they were able to produce extra food for sale. AIDS has cut the available farm labor by at least 10 percent, and malaria by more than that. The healthy must spend their time nursing the ill. The critical weeding time is the first one-third of the crop’s existence, and that means weeding competes with planting on most small farms. Corn crop losses in an un-weeded field have been measured at 55–90 percent, rice yield losses at 50100 percent. Poor weed control cut yields in a Kenya cassava field by five tons per hectare.

What should Africa do? The same thing First World farmers do in this age of technology—use herbicides. In a Nigerian test plot, atrazine on the corn crop doubled yields and cut costs by 60 percent. On peanuts, in Zimbabwe, herbicides cut weed control labor from
100 hours per hectare to one-fourth of an hour per hectare while yields rose sharply. African governments are now pinning hopes on fertilizer as a crucial input to raise food yields and meet its fast-rising food needs without plowing down more wildlife habitat. Putting only fertilizer on

a weedy corn plot can, unfortunately, increase yield losses! Weeds can often out-compete crop plants for the nitrogen in the soil. That is why the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) reported as early as 1998 that crop yields in Africa would stay at the subsistence level as long as the hand-hoe is the primary means of weeding.

by five tons per hectare. Africa will need lots of little countryside farm stores to distribute the better seeds, fertilizers, and herbicides. It needs weed experts far below the PhD level, people who will live and work in the farming regions. It needs better roads, to bring in the inputs and take out food to sell in the cities. Without these rural enhancements the rural population will stay at subsistence level while increased land clearing will keep the wildlife at risk of extinction The rest of the world needs to come
to terms with the African population growth, which will be proportionally greater than anywhere else in the world over the next 40 years. After 2050, the population growth will be over, but any African wildlife species lost in the next four decades will be gone for good. England’s Prince Charles went to Africa last April and told them they need organic-only farming. They’ve been farming organically for thousands of years and have reaped hunger from low yields and economic stagnation in rural areas. That won’t feed the population that’s building in Africa any more than it will feed tomorrow’s population in China, India, or Bangladesh. Dennis T. Is this in the future for Part 137? Fatigue has been on the NTSB’s Most Wanted List of transportation safety improvements since 1990. Over the first century of powered flight, countless accidents trace pilot fatigue as a contributing factor. This is why the NTSB is so pleased that the FAA issued a long-awaited science-based rule for flight and duty time. Secretary LaHood and former FAA Administrator Babbitt have worked for years to shepherd this contentious rule through the process. The NTSB applauds the leadership of DOT and FAA for bringing it across the finish line. While this is not a perfect rule, it is a huge improvement over the status quo for large passenger-carrying
operations. Yet, the NTSB is extremely disappointed that the new rule is limited to Part 121 carriers. A tired pilot is a tired pilot, whether there are 10 paying customers on board or 100, whether the payload is passengers or pallets. As the FAA said in its draft, “Fatigue threatens aviation safety because it increases the risk of pilot error that could lead to an accident.” This is particularly a concern for crews that fly “on the back side of the clock.” The NTSB looks forward to working with the FAA and the aviation community to support the rule’s essential education and training components and to identify areas where additional measures are needed.

Frederick E. Tilton, M.D. FAA Federal Air Surgeon
aeromedical advisory
Pilots are welcome here Those are the bold-type opening words on an FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) brochure entitled Physiological Training Courses for Civil Aviation Pilots. The phrase certainly
applies to the courses that are the subject of the brochure, but it also applies to the entire range of resources that CAMI’s Airman Education Program creates and makes available,
free, to pilots at http://www.faa. gov/ pilots/safety/ pilotsafetybrochures/.
Protecting your eyesight Let’s start with a subject that is
timely for summer flying in general: Protecting your eyes from exposure to harmful solar radiation. The medical certification process has long accommodated the reality that very few are blessed with perfect vision. Unless you are among those fortunate few, the “limitations” portion of your medical certificate will clearly state the requirement for use of corrective lenses when you fly. Wearing glasses or contact lenses when you fly meets the legal requirement, but corrective lenses are not enough. Because infrared and ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage your eyes, you also need protective lenses. The right sunglasses can help protect your eyes from exposure to harmful solar radiation. Sunglasses also reduce the effects of harsh sunlight, decrease eye fatigue, and protect your eyes from the risk of impact with objects (such as flying debris from a bird strike).
Beyond the image Sunglasses have long been part of the “cool pilot” image. When you are selecting your next pair of flying sunglasses, though, be sure to consider function along with fashion. Here are just of a few tips from CAMI’s Sunglasses for Pilots: Beyond the Image brochure: • Wear sunglasses that incorporate 99 to 100% UVA (ultraviolet-A) and UVB (ultraviolet-B) protection. • Weigh the pros and cons of the most common lens materials in use (“crown” glass, monomer plastic (CR-39®), and polycarbonate plastic). • Choose a tint that screens out only 70 to 85% of visible light, and does not appreciably distort color. • Avoid polarized lenses, which can reduce or eliminate the visibility of instruments with anti-glare filters. how to deal with it. The course addresses questions including: can we maintain present levels of safety as we grow older; what effects does aging have on piloting performance; how can we adjust for them; and how do we know when to say “when”? It discusses physical and mental changes among older pilots, and offers advice for adjusting for these changes in the cockpit. It also covers suggestions for avoiding common aircraft insurance issues and offers a positive, but honest, discussion of slowing down and/or stopping. “The reality with aging pilots is that there is no denominator by which to judge exposure,” said AOPA Foundation president Bruce Landsberg. “Obvious incidents of incapacitation remain rare, but subtle deterioration and subsequent accident involvement is not easily ferreted out. TracMap makes strides in aerial GPS TracMap establishes US Base and appoints two further distributors New Zealand GPS business TracMap has continued its North American expansion with the establishment of a distribution center in Griffin, Georgia. Company president Colin Brown reports that it was always part of their growth strategy. “We felt that as volumes grew, we needed to be able to adequately support our distributors and their customers. “Having a base in Georgia is part of that growth process,” said Colin. “Georgia is an ideal location for us,

for it means we can overnight product to most areas in the country out of Atlanta. As part of that growth strategy, the company has also appointed two more distributors, meaning it now has eleven distributors in total. Again, this is part of the company’s growth plans, according to Colin Brown. “We want to have sufficient distributors to provide reasonable geographic coverage, but not so many that they (the distributors) can’t achieve good turnover and throughput, and hence be an important part of their overall business,” said Colin. The two latest distributors are Rusty
Colin Brown presenting David George of Spearman, TX with his TracMap prize
Lindemann, based in Hondo, Texas and Kevin Vondran, from Brinkley, Arkansas. For Rusty Lindemann, taking on the TracMap distribution is a logical extension of his business. “We already operate a number of aircraft up through the Midwest, and as well, have a growing aircraft maintenance business. “The TracMap system, particularly with its ability to shift data using cellular rather than USB fits well with how we want to operate and will also suit a number of other operators”, said Rusty. Kevin Vondran is also excited about taking on TracMap distribution. “It is a great system,” commented Kevin. “It’s simple, easy to operate and seems to have features most pilots are looking for.” Kevin initially approached TracMap about a system for data recording for his innovative firegates. As a result of those discussions, Kevin recognized the TracMap system was also well suited for conventional spraying and requested being appointed a distributor. For TracMap, adding Kevin to their distributor network made sense.
‘We knew we were not adequately represented in the middle of the country. With Kevin, we have gone a long way toward overcoming that problem,” said Brown.
Live tracking and wireless map sending is an easy option for TracMap TracMap has been shifting data wireless for six years in New Zealand, which is their original base. Most of the fertilizer spreading trucks in New Zealand use their system and last year over 40,000 maps went through the TracMap system. TracMap used the NAAA convention in December to launch their ability to send and receive maps by cellular modem in North America. For a lot of operators, using USB thumb drives to upload target fields and download coverage maps is all they need. But for others it is not an adequate solution according to TracMap’s Colin Brown. “They need the reliability of cellular,” he says. And he should know. Getting reliable data by cellular was one

of the design criteria of their original systems introduced to New Zealand operators six years ago. Now 70% of fertilizer spreading trucks and a similar proportion of aircraft operate TracMap systems. “Our early experience clearly showed that when you have busy people operating away from their home base, relying on downloading to USB and then emailing is just not reliable,” said Colin. In addition to map sending, the company also offers the ability to track an aircraft’s location using the same built-in cellular modem. “It offers great piece of mind,” said Colin. “While not
as good a coverage as you can get from satellite-based tracking systems, it is a lot cheaper to operate and for a lot of locations it is good enough”. The system uses a dedicated cellular data modem permanently connected to the TracMap hardware, which is connected to the Internet. Users then use an Internet log-on to shift data or see an aircraft’s location. For TracMap, this latest option is part of its philosophy of constant improvement. “One of the advantages of being a smaller company that is totally focused on agriculture, is we clearly
understand what pilots need and can quickly adapt and modify our systems to suit.,” commented Colin. “While we endeavor to get it right the first time, the reality is that you can always improve on what you have done in the past.” The company recently released a new operating system which it had spent three years designing as a result of customer feedback and which has been well received by pilots. For existing customers, it is a free download from the company’s website.
TracMap Lite win goes to Texas Late last year TracMap ran an international competition to mark the launch of its innovative TracMap Lite GPS guidance product. It attracted entries from as far afield as South Africa and Italy, but the winner was David George, who operates out of Spearman, Texas. David is delighted with the win and has in fact decided to upgrade to the Flight Pro version, due to the options it provides for dealing with SHP and Google Earth files.

in delivering high quality work and this in turn means having a reliable GPS. “I installed a new GPS in my Thrush last season and had nothing but problems,” said David. ”Winning the TracMap has been absolutely great, since I needed something more reliable for 2012.” Like many aerial operators, David takes great pride in delivering high quality work and this in turn means having a reliable GPS. The other thing David has enjoyed about the TracMap system is how easy it has been to learn. He purchased the optional vehicle kit, so he can put the system in his truck and drive around to get familiar with it. To quote David, “As promised, I put the TracMap in the truck asap. Wow! It is super simple, once you get familiar with the menus. The vehicle practice kit worked like a dream, five minutes and I was driving around the ramp. It’s a great system.”

Air Tractor sells R-1340 engine bearing manufacturing to Covington Aircraft Engines After months of discussion with Covington Aircraft Engines representatives, Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch and Covington Aircraft Engines Executive Vice President Aaron Abbott met recently at Chester Roberts Supply in Collinsville, Texas to “ink the deal” finalizing the purchase from Air Tractor, Inc. of the manufacturing rights for producing Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engine bearings. The sale completes Air Tractor’s divestiture of R-1340 engine parts manufacturing. According to the sale agreement, Chester Roberts Supply will remain the distributor for the bearings. “Many, many years ago Leland Snow acquired the rights to produce replacement bearings and a crankshaft for the R-1340, since the AT-300 and AT-400 series aircraft were built with surplus R-1340 engines,” says Jim Hirsch. “And in those days many of these engines were rebuilt and repaired by Covington in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. So when Air Tractor made the shift to outfitting its aircraft with the Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbine engines,
the 1340 crankshaft manufacturing rights were sold to Covington. Since then Air Tractor has continued to have a great business relationship with Covington. And because they are one of the world’s premier Pratt & Whitney turbine and radial engine maintenance and repair companies, it just made sense to talk to them about purchasing the R-1340 bearings.” The manufacturing rights purchased by Covington Aircraft Engines covers a total of five bearing sets used throughout the R-1340, including master rod bearings, blower bearings and thrust bearings. According to Rob Seeman, Operations Manager for the Radial Division at Covington, the company overhauls an average of 170 radial engines each year. “We’re the world’s largest R-985 and R-1340 overhaul facility and see engines come in from all points on the globe. Bringing in the bearing manufacturing to Covington not only gives us a ready inventory of bearings, but also allows us the manufacturing flexibility to adjust
output for one bearing type or another – which helps us complete engine overhauls in a timely manner.” “This transaction reflects our continuing commitment to the R-1340,” says Aaron Abbott, “and supporting agricultural aircraft operators with state-of-the-art products and service. Even with the many reciprocating and turbine engines available today, the R-1340 remains an economical, efficient and dependable engine.” Abbott reports that he expects bearing manufacturing to begin at Covington sometime in 2012, following FAA certification. “It’s always a pleasure doing business with Air Tractor,” says Abbott, “My father and Leland Snow go back to 1972, and both companies have benefitted from a shared commitment to the Pratt & Whitney engine family. We believe our customers have done well by them, too.”

FAA issues AD for obvious maintenance practices Docket No. FAA-2007-0218; Directorate Identifier 92-ANE-56-AD; Amendment 39-16894; AD 2011-26-04 —The FAA is superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for certain fuel injected reciprocating engines manufactured by Lycoming Engines. That AD currently requires inspection, replacement if necessary, and proper clamping of externally mounted fuel injector fuel lines. That AD also states that it is not applicable to engines that have a Maintenance and Overhaul Manual with an Airworthiness Limitations Section that requires inspection and replacement, if necessary, of externally mounted fuel injector lines. This new AD requires the same actions. This AD is not applicable to engines having internally mounted fuel injection lines, which are not accessible. The FAA is issuing this AD to prevent failure of the fuel injector fuel lines that would allow fuel to spray into the
engine compartment, resulting in an engine fire. This AD was prompted by Lycoming Engines revising their Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) to add engine models requiring inspections. This AD is effective January 25, 2012. You must use Lycoming Engines Mandatory Service Bulletin No. 342F, dated June 4, 2010, to perform the actions required by this AD. Contact Lycoming Engines, 652 Oliver Street, Williamsport, PA 17701, or go to www. lycoming.textron.com for a copy of this service information. You may review copies at the FAA, New England Region, 12 New England Executive Park, Burlington, MA. The FAA gave the public the opportunity to participate in developing this AD. The following presents the comment received on the proposal and the FAA’s response to the
comment: One commenter asked why the AD requirements are only for Lycoming engines, and not also for Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) engines. The commenter inferred that the FAA writes ADs just to make owners maintain their aircraft. In response, any AD made applicable to TCM engines with externally mounted fuel injector lines, would have to be written by the Atlanta Aircraft Certification Office (ACO), because that office has oversight of TCM. The Atlanta ACO has informed the FAA that at this time, there is insufficient data to justify an AD for TCM engines with externally mounted fuel injector lines, however, they realize there may be justification for issuing a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB), for TCM engines on this subject. They are looking into possibly issuing an SAIB. The FAA estimates this AD affects 21,180 four-cylinder engines, 21,449
six-cylinder engines, and 256 eightcylinder engines installed on aircraft of U.S. registry. It also estimates it will take about 0.2 work-hour to inspect all lines on a four-cylinder engine, 0.5 work-hour to inspect all lines on a six-cylinder engine, and 0.7 work-hour to inspect all lines on an eight-cylinder engine. It also estimates the average labor rate is $85 per work-hour. The FAA does not anticipate any additional costs on U.S. operators, as the inspection would be done in conjunction with other work performed concurrently. It anticipates no parts to be required. Based on these figures, the total cost of the AD to U.S. operators for one inspection of the affected engines is $1,286,875.

Air Tractor has new Air Tractor dealer for southern Africa Olney, TEXAS – Aerial application aircraft manufacturer Air Tractor, Inc. announced that Ag Aviation Africa will officially become the Air Tractor dealer for southern Africa in January 2012. Lourens Kritzinger and son Matt own and operate Ag Aviation Africa, and will be authorized representatives to sell and service the complete line of Air Tractor agricultural and firefighting aircraft. Ag Aviation Africa, located in Cape Town, South Africa will serve aerial spray operators throughout southern Africa through an infrastructure network developed over many years by Lourens Kritzinger who has operated a successful aerial spraying operation since 1977. “We have the ability to provide a range of services to operators across southern Africa,” says Kritzinger, “with Air Tractor sales, aircraft financing assistance, maintenance and field support to ag and aerial firefighting operators. Beyond aircraft sales and support, Ag Aviation Africa also provides value-added services such as consulting by highly regarded agricultural specialists who are experienced in aerial application of crops in various growing regions of Africa. Today, plants, insects and fungi are responding more and more in an irregular way to the application of chemicals, so it is very important to make use of the very best technical support to obtain the desired results,” notes Kritzinger. Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch sees southern Africa as an important and growing market for Air Tractor aircraft sales, and Ag Aviation Africa as the key to reaching aerial spraying operators there. “The world agricultural market expansion is shifting increasingly towards
developing countries. Investments in production capacity and infrastructure are moving towards the developing world, and that’s where our long-term opportunity for sales growth lies. Lourens Kritzinger has been involved in South Africa’s aerial application industry for many, many years and has important governmental and private industry relationships throughout the region that he has developed during the course of growing his own successful aerial spraying business. This kind of industry knowledge and experience is a common denominator among Air Tractor dealers worldwide, so Lourens and his son Matt are a natural fit for our dealer organization. We’re delighted to have them in our Air Tractor family,” says Hirsch. “We are very pleased and excited to become an Air Tractor dealer,” says Matt Kritzinger. “My father Lourens has flown just about every kind of ag aircraft during his career, and it’s clear that Air Tractor is far and away the best aircraft available. Air Tractor is unmatched for performance, reliability, pilot safety, parts availability and factory support.” Ag Aviation Africa sells and supports the complete line of Air Tractor agricultural and firefighting aircraft, ranging from the 400-gallon capacity Air Tractor AT-401B to the wildfire-fighting, 800-gallon AT-802F single engine air tanker. For more information about Ag Aviation Africa, go to www.AgAviationAfrica.com. Email Lourens Kritzinger at lourens@ agaviationafrica.com. Hershey Flying Service was established in 1949 by Pete and Floyd Rouche as an aerial application business. Pete and Floyd would start the season in the southern states and eventually find their way back to Nebraska providing aerial application along the way. In 1969 the brothers purchased their first Ag Cat and fell in love with the aircraft. In 1974 Pete and Floyd decided to retire from the aerial application buisness and go strictly into rebuilding aircraft. Their plane of choice was of course the Grumman Ag Cat. They were responsible for building all their jigs and fixtures for the aircraft, a skill they both learned working in California at the aircraft bomber factories during World War II. Pete worked on B-17’s and Floyd worked on A-25’s.
Today Hershey Flying Service is responsible for many STC modifications to the Ag Cat, along with holding numerous PMA replacement parts to support the fleet. Hershey has become the premier repair facility for Ag Cats with a customer base made up of the US, Canada and numerous other countries all over the world. AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. T F N
