Air Tractor founder, father of modern aerial spraying dies Wichita Falls, TEXAS – Leland Snow, founder and President of Air Tractor, Inc., and the inventor of modern aerial spray aircraft, died Sunday morning, February 20, 2011 while jogging near his home. He was 80 years old. Snow leaves behind a 53-year legacy of aircraft design and innovations that ushered in the era of the modern aerial spray plane. Air Tractor, the company he founded in 1972, produces the world’s most popular aerial spray aircraft and single engine air tankers for aerial firefighting. The company’s product line includes 400, 500, 600 800 and 1,000-gallon capacity aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney piston or turbine engines. They are used for agricultural purposes, forest and wildfire fighting, narcotic crop eradication, fuel-hauling, fighting locust plagues, and cleaning up oil spills in coastal waters. Air Tractor aircraft are found working not only across the United States, but around the globe, in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, North and South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Macedonia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Leland Snow designed his first aerial spray airplane, the S-1, in 1951. The 23-year old Snow completed test flights with the S-1 in 1953. Snow’s S-1 flew dusting and spraying jobs in the Texas Rio Grande Valley and in Nicaragua until 1957. He followed-up the S-1 with the models S-2A and S-2B, which were built when Snow moved to production facilities in Olney, Texas in 1958. In 1965, Leland Snow sold his company to Rockwell-Standard and was appointed a Vice President of the Aero Commander division. During this time, the Model S-2R was developed and named the Thrush. The first 100 Thrush aircraft were built at the Olney Division before the plant was closed and Thrush production moved to Georgia in 1970. More than 500 aircraft were produced under Snow Aeronautical Corporation and Rockwell-Standard in Olney. Snow resigned from Rockwell and devoted the next two years designing the Air Tractor. Construction began in 1972 on the Air Tractor AT-300, which later became the AT-301. Air Tractor’s first

turbine engine powered aircraft, the AT302, was introduced in 1977. In 1990, Air Tractor introduced the AT-802, the world’s largest ag plane. By 2011, more than 400 AT-802s had been produced. In 2010, Air Tractor delivered the 2,500th aircraft to an aerial spraying operator in Brazil. In 2010, Air Tractor produced 123 aircraft and its international sales accounted for more than 50 percent of its business. Actively involved in Air Tractor aircraft design and manufacturing until his death, Snow was also a great supporter and contributor to the agricultural spray aircraft industry, helping to promote agricultural aviation, educate the public about the benefits of aerial agricultural spraying and supporting efforts to introduce and train young pilots in agricultural spraying careers. To that

end, Air Tractor introduced in 2008 a two-seat, 500-gallon ag aircraft, the AT504, which was specifically designed for on-the-job training. In July 2008 Leland Snow transferred ownership of Air Tractor, Inc. to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. That same year Snow published an autobiography of his career in aviation, Putting Dreams to Flight. Snow was an avid runner, and competed in three marathons, including competing twice in the New York marathon. It was a common sight to see him running the streets of his Wichita Falls neighborhood. A memorial service will be held 2 P.M. Saturday, February 26th at Air Tractor in Olney, Texas. A legend leaves us, but his spirit remains On Sunday, February 20, I received a phone call. I knew one day this call would come; but impossible to know when. I was told Mr. Leland Snow, founder of Air Tractor, had passed away. Anyone reading this blog should already know who Mr. Leland was, I don’t have to explain. What I want to do is convey feelings and thoughts that I know each of us have no matter

which type of aircraft we fly; to those who don’t fly; and even to those who may not have known Mr. Leland. From a career that launched the first Snow aircraft in the summer of 1953 until today, Leland Snow changed the face of agricultural aviation forever. Taking it from the day of biplane Stearmans, to the AT-1002, nearly ten

times the aircraft. My experience with Mr. Leland began in the fall of 1979. I had decided to “move up” from my 600 hp radial B-model Ag-Cat to a turbine-powered aircraft. At the time, I could only scratch up enough money to take the less expensive route of a new PT6A-11AG engine that Air Tractor was about to offer in its AT-400 and Thrush already offered with its 400-gallon aircraft. Mr. Leland promised me if I would wait just a little longer, the -11AG powered Air Tractor would be available. Being young and impatient, I elected to buy the Thrush. Over the years, Mr. Leland’s and my path crossed many times. It seems like with every conversation I came away knowing a little more about something than I did before. At the 1988 NAAA convention in Mobile, Alabama, I approached Mr. Leland explaining how I was going to “write” an ag-av newspaper. He offered encouragement, but I don’t know if he really believed me. Snow from page 5 allow me to take a photo of him while standing outside next to an Air Tractor. Our relationship grew over the years. Whenever I wanted to communicate with him, instead of interrupting his day with a phone call, I’d send him a fax, even everyone else was using email. He always responded with a handwritten fax. I am sure he did the same with many others. One day a fax of his appeared on my desk. “Bill, if you could, please, when you take a picture of an Air Tractor in flight, don’t have the prop stopped. It looks as if the plane has had an engine failure.” As I read it, I thought, “He’s got a good point.” Not being a trained photographer, I was proud when I could set the camera’s shutter speed to stop the prop, as if the aircraft was gliding through the air. Mr. Leland didn’t see it that way. From that day on, I’ve always made sure the propeller of an in-flight aircraft was blurred to appear it was turning. On another occasion, I was listening to Mr. Leland give a talk at a convention. He was explaining how Air Tractor was moving forward developing ideas to improve his planes. I left that meeting after hearing him say, “Technology does not back up.” A simply enough choice of words, but none any truer and words that have stuck with me since. During Mr. Leland’s 50+ years in agaviation, he witnessed many changes, particular to ag-planes. His first design of an ag-plane had the pilot in an open cockpit seated directly behind the radial engine with the hopper behind the pilot. How different things are today with the pilot sitting behind the hopper in an air-conditioned cockpit with seat belt airbags surrounded by the safest structure possible, high-tech guided GPS, sophisticated application equipment and powered by a PT6A turboprop engine. The ag-aviation industry worldwide will miss and memorialize Leland Snow. Just how much of the aeronautical improvements the industry enjoys due to his efforts are unknown. Even at 80 years old, he never stopped working toward making the Air Tractor the best ag-plane that it could possibly be. He pushed the limits of our imagination with ever increasing hopper sizes, airframe improvements and more powerful engines, to even expanding into the military marketplace with the AT-802U. I hope that I can live my life as fully as that of Leland Snow’s.

opinion In response to Mr. Pat Kornegay’s letter to the editor (AAU May 2010) raking me over the coals about using full flaps in a turn in my Thrush, I would like to reiterate, the name of my column is “IN MY OPINION,” and that’s exactly what it is: my opinion. However, I do sincerely appreciate Mr. Kornegay commenting on the article. As mentioned in the original column, I make my ag turns the same way I saw ag pilots working rice in Thrushes in Arkansas back in the early 80s. I also know many Thrush pilots do not use flaps in the turn. In my turbine course, we make turns with and without flaps, but it is my preference to use flaps, if not full flaps, then five or ten degrees. With a heavy load, I make the primary turn, flaps retracted, relatively close to the ground to conserve the kinetic energy of the airplane. When I begin the secondary turn (back towards the field and into the wind), I extend the flaps and I allow my Thrush to balloon-climb until I reach 90° into the turn, then begin a descent as I intercept the next swath. I raise the flaps around the 135° point. I have never even approached a stall in my Thrush and God forbid I have ever influenced a fledging ag-pilot to

do something that would result in a tragedy. I teach safety! I need to add that two of our Flying Tiger Aviation instructors fly Thrushes in the Midwest during the corn run and they use flaps in their turns as well. I appreciate Mr. Kornegay commenting on my article. It’s nice to know someone as well-recognized and influential as him is reading my articles. Robert A. MET tower I like your latest editorial but write to comment on the MET tower issue. Ironically, while I was reading your newspaper, I received a call from a gentleman associated with a wind development company working in Illinois. He called to express his dismay upon hearing of the Thrush accident in California and asked if there was anything his company could

be doing to prevent such an accident. This particular guy has been sending me grid coordinates of all his MET towers for two years and has forced a priority for all of their towers to be adequately marked. My point is that not all “MET people” are uncaring. One of our biggest problems is the increasing number of private MET towers going up. I have yet to find a way to make sure those towers are marked and locations documented. State regulations are being considered and at least two other states have passed laws addressing the issue. We are also waiting to see what the FAA might do with a tower marking Advisory Circular after evaluating comments from the solicitation that just closed on Feb. 4. Whatever we do, it can’t happen fast enough. Regards, Rick Reed Mattoon, IL Rick; Point taken about the MET tower folks, other than they are doing a lousy PR job. It’s a huge problem and unfortunately the MET tower industry has not policed itself well enough to avoid impending regulations, which as we all know, can be worse than selfregulation. I believe it is only a matter of time before they are sued beyond belief, especially now since the FAA has taken comments and the dangers are fairly well documented that would indicate gross negligence on their part. I dislike most attorneys and despise excessive regulations. I wish the MET folks would wake up and resolve the issues.—Bill

Doing more with less The economic turmoil that has encircled the globe has affected all aspects of society in one way or another. The inevitable budget cuts that follow such a downturn will certainly have a huge impact on wildland firefighting. Several U.S. states have already announced a reduction in the number of full-time firefighting crew members and newly elected California Govenor Jerry Brown announced a full one-third reduction in the budget for CalFire. In most western states, the largest part of the firefighting budgets goes toward aircraft. They are expensive and can eat up money faster than a raging wildfire can run through dry brush. These cutbacks could occur just as the western part of the United

States is poised for one of the worst fire seasons in years. The last four fire seasons have had well below average activity and the odds are that 2011 will be above average. Late summer rains have produced abundant fine fuels and the development of a La Nina weather pattern have set the stage. It will be interesting to see what happens if this year indeed turns out to be a very busy one. However, the states are not the only ones feeling the impacts as all U.S. federal agencies are also facing severe belt tightening. I recently commented on the value of social networks such as Facebook in keeping aerial firefighters from around the world connected. Since then, Georgia

I know of several other state fire agencies that have pages on the network; The Texas Forest Service posts information such as training opportunities. It makes me wonder if government sites such as Inciweb may one day soon be obsolete. It is a changing world we live in. Mark Bickham, who headed the National Single Engine Air Tanker program from infancy through maturation has recently retired. Bickham did an outstanding job in overseeing the program and he will be sorely missed. His personal interaction with aircrews and contractors was always welcome in

this era of big government. Good luck my friend and I hope retirement does not put an end to your tanker base visits. The 2011 fire season is upon us. I am in West Texas as I write this and would not be surprised if I were called any day now. The forecast for this part of the country calls for very high fire danger at least through April. I hope everyone add something to their training programs besides a warm body. Remember safety is first and maybe I’ll see you in the mountains one day.

You have watched our helicopter fleet grow from an R22 to a R44; on through the Enstrom and now the big boy — the UH1H Huey. Why the Huey? The Huey would allow me to be productive year-round. summer, while attending to my first firefighting contract during the winter. In the search for a Huey, I found an excellent, type-certified Garlick Helicopters machine from Montana. A South African friend of mine now runs the Garlick facility and convinced me the Huey should have the big 1,400 SHP engine, as well as all the other “goodies” installed. After buying the helicopter, I focused on something that has never been done in South Africa fertilizing crops from a helicopter. I have very strong ties to New Zealand from my experience with the HeliPod spraying equipment for the R22 and R44. My heart started racing when I discovered IMS Helicopter Equipment Specialist of New Zealand. They sell fertilizer buckets for helicopters! I contacted the owner of IMS, Richard Lane. He was delighted to send pictures and specifications with available options for a fertilizer bucket that could easily handle one ton of fertilizer. IMS calls their buckets Ground-Effect spreading buckets. The IMS buckets

are simple, clean and very well made. There are no hydraulic lines or oil reservoir. It was also significantly less expensive than other models. I explained to Richard what I wanted and that I would be using a Huey for the job. I needed the capability to spread up to 500-600 kg/ha in one swath; but most of my work was going to be between 100-250 kg/ha. Richard said he would custom build me a bucket that would weigh only 169 kilograms. IMS installed a large spinner that is driven by a 16 HP Honda V-Twin engine that could easily handle the volume I needed. As for the gate opening options, there are two: a 24-volt electric with somewhat slower open and close speeds or a small on board compressor that provides quicker opening and closing with less hassle (approximately .3 seconds to open and shut). I decided to purchase the on board compressor unit. Now with a different and much larger helicopter and a new fertilizer bucket on the way, I needed to start marketing the idea of topdressing by helicopter, primarily for sugarcane

and pastures. This service had never been offered in South Africa and many growers weren’t certain of its operation. They wanted to see it work before making any decisions. I managed to get a few customers to commit, so I was set. My plan was simple: spread fertilizer and ask the others

to watch. I installed a TracMap GPS in the Huey. It is also manufactured in New Zealand. I have operated the TracMap four seasons and can say that for a helicopter, it is by far the best, easiest and most compact GPS system I have ever used. Slinging a bucket eight meters under the Huey, while maintaining 60 feet above the crop in rolling terrain was going to require getting used to. I needed a laser altimeter. Its accuracy would help me maintain a steady altitude during the application. I mounted it on the forward inspection plate below the collective. Eager to try the new unit, I fired up the old girl and slowly lifted into a hover. As I lifted, the unit displayed my height above the ground. On the display is a small triangle that shows the direction to lift for my desired application height. At exactly 60 feet the triangle disappeared. I continued vertically only to see another triangle pointing to descend. How did I spray all these years without this technology? Now, I was really excited! I had an awesome Huey, the best GPS

and a laser altimeter...I was going to sleep in my machine! The IMS fertilizer bucket arrived in an impressive shipping crate. We opened up the crate to see a new, shining stainless steel work of art. The workmanship was excellent. The welds were the best I’ve seen. After unpacking and assembly, I began installing the electrical system for the bucket. IMS had provided me the wiring diagram, simplifying the installation. After several hours sorting out the wiring of the system to the Huey, the moment of truth hit me...was it going to work? Battery master switch on...all good so far. The switch for the bucket turned on and the small 24-volt compressor came to life. While waiting for the compressor to

build up enough air to switch off, I looked at the agitator. It wasn’t working! What I had done wrong? When the required air pressure was reached, I activated the cyclicmounted switch to open the gate. Immediately there was this sound of air and a very quick opening of the gate. I went over for another look in the bucket to see the agitator working. The clever boys at IMS designed the agitator to work only when the gate is open. To verify, I closed the gate and sure enough the agitator stopped. I was itching to go test the bucket over the sugarcane I was farming. I needed to select the proper size gate plate. IMS offers plates with different size diameter holes. The design allows easy removal of the gate to pop out

the plate and install the one closest to the kg/ha required. I climbed in the Huey with the bucket positioned forward of the aircraft nose with the spinner rotating at its correct RPM. I wanted to see the spread, so I opened the gate for a second. The fertilizer came gushing out in a complete 360 degree arch, excellent. I eased in the collective and the blades whipped me up into a low hover. With a quick glance to check engine temps, pressures and RPM - all good, I added more collective. I knew with the added cable length to the bucket, I should break ground with it at eight meters. At six meters, I checked the mirror between my feet and could see the slack in the cables been taken up. At exactly eight meters on the laser altimeter, the bucket broke away from the ground. I ascended into a high hover to check for bucket movement. The bucket was positioned with its Honda engine in the front and wing in the rear. I moved the stick slowly forward to an airspeed of 50 knots. Looking in the mirror, I could see the bucket was very stable with the wing really doing its job.

I was amazed. Anyone who does sling work, knows what it is like to carry a load and it doesn’t

With only a six meter sling, it could be short for a nose landing. Entering a hover over the pad, I allowed the bucket to touch the ground. I reduced power to add slack to the sling and slowly started to track rearwards to position the bucket forward of the nose. I landed with the bucket in front of me. However, it appeared the sixmeter sling was too short for comfort considering the height of the bucket with the Huey’s skids on the ground. I lifted off and set up to position the bucket on the right side. This proved to be much better. I had a good view of the bucket and there was sufficient cable length. I shut down the beast, exited and switched off the Honda engine, thinking this endeavor was money well spent. Now, I needed to impress the local farmers. Three days later was a perfect day with mild temps and no wind. It would be my proving day and my first job. At first light, my crew and a few local farmers arrived at the landing zone to wait for 15 tons of fertilizer in 50 kg bags. The mission would be spreading 80 kg/ha of a new “black” urea over sugarcane. One of the farmers gave me directions to the field. On my approach, I noticed power lines running across the field. They looked to be about 10 meters above the crop. My application height would be 18 meters (60 feet). That gave me an eight-meter gap, if I flew the numbers

always do what you want! I positioned for the sugarcane field, crossed referenced the laser altimeter and started a descent to a 60-foot application height. At the threshold of the field, I opened the gate and instantly there was a white arc of urea bellowing out of the bucket. I stuck my head out of the Huey to look at the pattern...it was perfect. At 100 kg/ha, the operational swath was 36 meters. The bucket was throwing further than that, so this distance allowed for an overlap. Approaching the end of the field, I activated the gate giving an instant snap shut. I added power to start my turn for the next run, finished the field and headed back for landing. Was it better to position the bucket on the nose of the Huey for landing or on my right side (pilot) to see it better?

correctly. I could see I was at the right altitude and continued to set up for the first run. I could see the power lines getting closer. Laser numbers good, I was over the lines, phew! I tracked straight to the end of the run, marked again and now had my A/B line set. I climbed away, pulling in some power for the left turn. I looked down at the mirror to see the swing with this load. I was surprised, as it wasn’t bad. I decreased power to turn left. I advanced the TracMap to 1-left and descended for my next swath. At the correct altitude and position, I opened the gate and flew across the field toward the power lines. As I approached them, for the first time in my ag career I felt confident about the location of the power lines; I knew I was safely over them and out of danger. Several more runs completed and the bucket empty, I returned to the LZ. In a hover, I glanced down to see 15 new bags waiting to be loaded. I positioned the bucket close to them and slowly reduced power. The Huey’s downwash was entering the bucket causing a slight left to right swing. I eased down and concentrated on catching the swing at the right

moment. Like an old grandfather clock’s pendulum ticking, I watched the swing, adjusted my height and at the right moment lowered the collective. The bucket settled on the ground next to the opened bags. My ground crew grabbed the sling cables and I landed left of the bucket. I could see smiles on farmer faces...this was good. I had decided to not make any flying swath tests and spread pattern checks before I flew my initial application. I had very good info from IMS concerning application rates. Richard had given me an application rate table compiled from years of field applications. My next job was over a pasture of cut grass. This would be good for seeing the distribution pattern. I applied 125 kg/ha of white urea using a swath of 36 meters. Afterwards, I walked the field with the farmer. The pattern was constant and uniform. The farmer said, “Man, this spreads better than my tractor!” What more could I ask for?

Simplex and Eurocopter demonstrate high-rise firefighting capability Simplex Manufacturing and Eurocopter have completed a demonstration of Simplex’s newest High Rise Firefighting system for the Eurocopter EC225 in Hong Kong as part of the China Air Show. Simplex developed the system for the EC225 after a successful development and deployment of a high rise fire fighting system on an AVIC H-425 in China last year. Simplex will continue to expand its fleet of high rise fire fighting systems to the Russian build KA-32, China built AC313, and other helicopter models in the coming months. The High Rise Firefighting systems utilize Simplex’s extensive fleet of certified fire fighting tanks. Simplex is the only company in the world with certified fire fighting tanks for both the EC225 and KA-32 helicopters. The system developed for the EC225 utilizes the Simplex Manufacturing fire fighting tank for the EC225 in addition to the Simplex Hydra Foam

Cannon. The Simplex Hydra Foam Cannon is the result of several years of research and development on the best methods for aerial firefighting from a helicopter. Simplex’s Hydra Foam system integrates leading edge technologies including a FLIR EVS3 infrared camera to assist firefighters in seeing the fire through smoke.

The system also includes a laser range finder to provide accurate distance measurement to the building. The system utilizes a Simplex certified boom from the recently STC’d Simplex Power Line Washing System.

The boom extends outside the rotor tips for the best possible effectiveness in firefighting. The Simplex Hydra Foam System can be installed in a helicopter in approximately 15 minutes, providing operational flexibility allowing the helicopter to be used for other missions. The system also has large dump doors to allow the helicopter to drop water and foam vertically on structures and wildland fires. Simplex Manufacturing is granted first China STC Simplex Manufacturing has been granted a Validation of Supplemental Type Certificate (VSTC) from the Peoples Republic of China for its Robinson R44 agricultural spray system. Fires Down Under by Marc Mullis Most of the news coming out of Australia over the past few months has been the historical flooding that devastated the northeastern part of the country. The high waters covered millions of acres of fertile farmland and destroyed or damaged countless homes and buildings. Just as the waters began to recede, another pestilence started to unfold in yet another region of the vast country. As the elevated temperatures and gusty winds of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer months dried out the landscape, wildfires started making the

headlines. The fuel types that dominate most of the Outback tend to burn very hot and very fast. When the fuels combine with blustery winds, this makes for very fast moving firestorms that are very difficult to contain. One such blaze in February destroyed sixty-four homes before it was extinguished. A fast-moving fire in medium to light fuels are often best managed by applying aerial resources, such as air tankers or helicopters. In the past, Australia has not had a national, organized aerial firefighting program. Instead, the country has simply leased assets from other

countries for use during the fire season. This has usually been Ericson Skycrane Type 1 helicopters, which can be loaded aboard cargo planes and flown overseas. Last summer they tested the DC-10 Supertanker, but officials decided that it was a tool they did not need in their box. The government has also had an arraignment with aerial applicators to provide assistance when a fire was nearby. For the Australian summer of 2011, Australia has made an agreement with a Canadian company, Conair, to lease two Convair 580 heavy air tankers, three AT-802F Single Engine Air Tankers

(SEATs) and one air attack platform, or as they call them north of the border a “birddog” aircraft. Conair will supply flight crews and support personal over the period of the contract. Other duties, such as dispatch and management, will be performed by Australians. Along with two Skycranes and other local assets, this will constitute by far the largest aerial firefighting force ever assembled in the country. It will be interesting to watch as Australia’s aerial firefighting fleet grows through the teething pains of a new industry. I wish our mates Down Under the best of luck!

Macedonian AT-802A Fire Boss’s travel to Spain for annual inspections by Igor Bozinovski One year after their delivery to the Republic of Macedonia, two Air Tractor AT-802A “Fire Boss” amphibious fire-fighting planes from Macedonia’s Protection and Rescue Directorate returned to Spain for a scheduled annual maintenance inspection by “Avialsa T-35 S.L.”, a Valencia-based Part 145 maintenance organization that specializes in Air Tractor, Dromader and Cessna aircraft maintenance.

The 2.000-km ferry flight started October 28 from Skopje’s Alexander the Great International Airport and lasted three days due to foul weather. The annual maintenance inspection of the planes started shortly after their arrival at Valencia. The inspections were successfully finished November 24, after which both planes returned to Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle International Airport in Macedonia December 19, 2010. Macedonia is the latest Avialsa AT-802

The planes were delivered to the Protection and Rescue Directorate of Macedonia November 8, 2009 under a $10.3 million USD purchase contract that Protection and Rescue Directorate signed with the Spanish company, “Air Tractor Europe S.L.” March 5, 2009. Under that contract, Macedonia purchased three Air Tractor AT-802A “Fire Boss” single-seat planes, related aircraft equipment, spare parts and training for pilots, engineers

and mechanics. The third Macedonian AT-802A “Fire Boss” was delivered to Macedonia on March 1, 2010 and is scheduled for its annual inspection by “Avialsa T-35 S.L.” during early 2011. The Macedonian AT-802A “Fire Boss” fleet serves with the 2009-established aviation unit of the Protection and Rescue Directorate and is using Skopje’s Alexander the Great International Airport as its home base. Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle International Airport located southwest of Macedonia is used as an alternate and forward-operating base during summer seasons. The summer

of 2010 was the first firefighting season for Macedonia’s AT-802A Fire Boss fleet. During August, the three Macedonian firefighting planes performed 142 wildfire-extinguishing flights for a total of 40 flight hours. While the planes are primarily intended for use in Macedonia, they are also available on request to countries in need of their firefighting capabilities, especially to the Balkan states of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

All licensed aerial applicators in Mississippi who were members of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association in 2010, and had no proven drift violations within the past 24 months, were eligible to participate in the A.C.E. Pilot Program. Each participant completed a questionnaire that documented their experience, track record and voluntary environmental stewardship efforts. Karl Holcomb, President of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association presented each A.C.E. Pilot with a plaque and a cash award for $1,500.00 at the recent Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association’s annual meeting in Bay Saint Louis, MS. Olney, TEXAS – Only a little more than two years after Air Tractor, Inc. delivered its 300th AT-802 aerial application aircraft, the company has announced the delivery of its 400th 802. The aircraft is now hangered at its new home, Dungan Aerial Service, located in Connersville, Indiana. “This marks another very significant moment in Air Tractor history.” says Leland Snow, president of Air Tractor, Inc. “The quickening pace of AT-802 sales is a clear sign that the aircraft’s combination of high capacity, high performance, and reliability is making it a top choice of the aerial application industry.” Jeff Dungan, owner of Dungan Aerial Service, Inc., agrees. “The 802”, he said, “is a perfect fit for our kind of operation here in Indiana. Two 802s, working in tandem, is an excellent setup for us.” Dungan Aerial Service, Inc., provides agricultural application services in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. “In our part of the country”, Dungan continues, “we have long ferries from

our base here at Connersville out to the spray jobs. BASF continues support of Operation S.A.F.E. in 2011 Collaboration with NAAA incentivizes aerial applicators to participate in S.A.F.E. fly-ins RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, February 14, 2011 – BASF will continue support of Operation S.A.F.E. (SelfRegulating Application and Flight Efficiency) fly-ins in 2011 through its collaboration with the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA). Through the partnership, BASF provides financial support for participating aerial applicators, which can be used towards membership in NAAA or for new spray equipment. “More than 800 aerial applicators participated in 99 Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins over the last two years,” said Tony Goede, BASF Plant Health Coordinator. “This important program helps ensure efficiency for the entire aerial application industry.” In order to take advantage of the BASF Equipment and NAAA Membership

Rebate Program, an operator or pilot must be an NAAA member. Although it is not necessary to be a member to participate in an Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in, that person must become an NAAA member before applying for and being granted approval for the rebate application. Then the operator or pilot can apply to be reimbursed for some or all of their 2011 membership dues or submit receipts to receive a rebate for nozzles and/or tips purshased for the aircraft. “This program is proven to enhance professionalism in the aerial application industry by directing aerial applicators to join NAAA, where they have access to the library of education and communication stewardship services offered by the association,” said Andrew Moore, Executive Director of NAAA. “The program also allows applicators to equip their aircraft with new equipment to ensure precise applications. After machining is completed, each disc is heat treated using the proprietary Black Steel® process. The heat treatment strengthens the steel by bonding the carbon, oxygen and nitrogen in the top layer of the metal. This is not a coating or paint that can wear off during the life cycle of the disc. The steel itself is transformed. The heat treatment gives the steel its aesthetically pleasing black appearance and provides a surface with a high resistance to the corrosion and oxidation (rust) associated with the extreme thermal cycling experienced in aircraft braking systems. Clean fuel During the summer of 2008 I flew out of Mandan, North Dakota spraying corn, wheat, sunflowers, etc. The man who had the flying service also happened to be a farmer. This in itself should have been a subtle, slightly-red flag. The farmer was also a pilot and actually had done some flying with us at Flying Tiger Aviation. So my old, naive, trust-everybody self, along with Edwards Barham, owner of Flying Tiger Aviation, was duped. I will call this man John, but of course that is not his real name. John asked me if it would be OK to use his farm diesel in my turbine Thrush, because in reality, it is all the same. Furthermore, he had a buddy that used farm diesel exclusively and never had any trouble. Besides, it would really save him a lot of money. I had heard of some other turbine ag pilots

who used farm diesel and I certainly could empathize with him. However, I told him that I just felt a lot better using Jet-A and I did...or so I thought! John had an old 3-ton fuel tender truck that he assured me had been thoroughly cleaned and filled with gen-u-wine Jet-A. I took him at his word. Big mistake! Last February, when we were having the annual inspection done and new fuel injector nozzles installed, it was discovered that three of the fourteen nozzles had trash in them. The fuel spray cone was not at the 60 degree angle that it was supposed to be. This can be disastrous because if the nozzle is spewing a stream instead of a 60 degree cone that nozzle turns into a blow torch and could actually burn a hole in the combustion chamber. We had to have a borescope inspection

performed and praise the Lord no damage was done. We were very lucky. If it can be proven there is an normally insured incident due to bad fuel, there is the possibility your insurance is null and void. Of course, the main reason to use only fuel that is prescribed by the manufacturer is to avoid a major, big-time expense, which will far exceed the paltry savings in fuel cost. I installed a new filter in the spring and again after 200 hrs on the Hobbs meter. Some pilots even have two filters inline, which is a very good idea. Moral to the story - if you cannot get real Jet-A fuel...use Stolichnaya Elit or Absolut vodka; I guarantee they are clean! And so....Be safe, have fun and make money.

2010 Final NTSB report By Bill Lavender Editors Note: The following statistics were taken from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records, indicating trends in ag-aviation accidents during 2010. It should be noted there has been no factoring for the number of hours flown in each type aircraft, as there is no way to know this information, which can easily askew any assumptions. Ninety ag-aviation accidents were reported in 2010, reflecting an increase by seven from the 83 reported in 2009. This was seven less accidents than the 97 that were reported in 2008. 2010’s fatality number of five is two less than 2009 and three less than 2008 and 2007. The fatalities seem to be on a continued decrease from 2006’s 10 and 2005’s 14. Five fatalities are much lower than 14, especially when considering the

probability of more hours being flown in 2010 than 2005. Most of the accidents in 2010 were during June, July, August and

very low single digits numbers with zero in March. July had an unusually high number of accidents, 30, triple the number in August and almost tripling with the eleven in June and twelve in September. Most operations are in high gear during July. It is also the beginning of corn spraying in the Midwest. The number of accidents, broken down by states, were a total of 12 for Illinois, Iowa and Indiana combined, the same as last year. For the third consecutive year, California had the most accidents with 16, compared to nine last year. Texas came in second with nine, followed by Arkansas with eight. Iowa had five. Idaho, Illinois, and Nebraska had four each, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri and Washington had three each. Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon and South

Carolina had two each. Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin had one accident each. Other states with agaviation operations did not report any accidents. Oddly, helicopters lead the way with 29% (26) of the accidents this year, even though they make up only an estimated 10% or less of the fleet. Air Tractors were next with 23% (21), followed closely by Ag-Cat’s 23% (20). The Air Tractor number should come as no surprise, since it represents the majority of the ag-aircraft in use. What should be a surprise, but proves to be true every year,

is the Ag-Cat accident rate was equally as high. There is no simple answer for why that is. One could summarize it may be because of fewer experienced pilots and older planes. Thrush accidents were fourth with 13% (12), followed by Cessna C-188s with 7% (6), Dromader with 3% (3) and Pawnee with 2% (2). Only the GA-200, Weatherly and Eagle ag-planes did not report any accidents. Take a look at the single digit numbers of ag-aircraft accidents. There are probably less Pawnee, Dromader, Weatherly and surely the Eagle agplanes operating. As should be expected,

these aircrafts’ accident numbers are lower. It now becomes obvious, to really make any qualified assumptions, the number and type of ag-aircraft and the number of hours each type of aircraft flies in a season are critical numbers that are missing from the NTSB reports. Thus, all assumptions are simply that, assumptions. You just can’t win at this guessing game. Most operators buy ag-planes for reasons other than safety; reasons such as price, availability and productivity. Besides, relatively speaking, ag-planes are inherently crashworthy. Pilots should keep them out of the trees and wires. They should have adequate fuel on board. It is a welcome relief to see the number of fatalities continue to decline. Now that this number has been in the single digits for four consecutive years, every effort should be made to target zero fatalities. Accidents are considerably lower in the past several years from the traditional 150+ accidents and 15+ fatalities in pre-PAASS years. American ag-pilots are flying smarter due to participating in the PAASS program. Awareness is key. It allows for the education spoon to feed. Fatal accidents (and accidents

All spray pilots should be extra careful in 2011, making it the best year yet with the lowest number of accidents and fatalities. Zero accidents equates to zero fatalities.

The worship that God wants God says, “I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:21-24). These forms of worship and spiritual expressions are God-ordained in the Old Testament and they are expressions of a right relationship with God. But religious activity without backing it up in the way you live your daily life is repugnant to God! Without a godly lifestyle, traditions and formalism are useless and empty; and they anger, rather than appease God.

When people say, “You ought to be in church on Sunday to worship the Lord!” It makes me wonder if they know what real worship of God is all about. Don’t misunderstand me, I think going to church is great and if you want to become a member of some local denominational or independent church there is nothing wrong with it. The Bible actually tells us not to forsake the assembling ourselves together (Hebrews 10:25). But being an active member of a church or denomination does not prove you are a Christian and is not necessarily pleasing to God. Outward rituals and religiosity does not prove that a person is a Christian. The woman of Samaria said to Jesus, “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is

the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:20-24). Real worship of the Lord has nothing to do with where you are at, or what church organization you belong to, but it has everything to do with the attitude of your heart and mind, and the way you live your life. Christians should live their life in an attitude of worshiping Jesus Christ every second of their life. The Lord says, “The multitude of your

sacrifices—what are they to Me? I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. When you come to appear before Me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of My courts? Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. The message is simple, if you want to have a right relationship with God then stop living like the rest of this satanically controlled world does. Religious formalism has caused many people to put too much importance on the clothes a person wears, how often they go to church, and how much money they give, rather than on the way they treat their fellow human being. This has to be a stench in God nostrils. Jesus said, “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws’” (Matthew 7:21-23). God says He hates pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech (Proverbs 8:13). Jesus gave us two commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second one is this; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There are no other commandments greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31). There is the saying, “Words are cheap,” which is very true. We can say we are Christians, but if our words are not backed up by a righteous and moral lifestyle, and love for other people, especially other Christians, we are not telling the truth. Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Christians are indwelt with God’s Holy Spirit, which gives us the capacity to love others, not just in words, but in actions. It doesn’t do any good to say to a hungry person, “God bless you,” and then walk away without providing food for them (read James 2:14-18). James says that anyone who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. And if a person does not bridle their tongue, this person’s religion is worthless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is to visit orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world (James

1:26-27, James 4:17). Paul wrote, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:1-5). True worship of God is always active in doing what is right and good.

Integrated management program helps increase corn and soybean yields, new BASF research shows Results announced during grower seminar in Chicago RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—BASF announced that a comprehensive 2010 crop protection study revealed that using a portfolio of BASF products can lead to an average 9.1 bu/A increase in soybeans and 33.3 bu/A increase in corn when compared to a low-input glyphosate program.1,2 Small-scale replicated field studies in soybeans and corn were conducted at university and BASF research sites throughout the Midwest. The objective of the research was to evaluate yield responses to BASF crop protection inputs – including Headline® fungicide, Headline AMP™ fungicide, Kixor® herbicide technology and Respect® insecticide. “So many factors affect yield potential, from weeds and diseases to

Krugman flunks food —and history by Dennis T. Avery CHURCHVLLE, VA—Paul Krugman is a big deal: Princeton professor, New York Times columnist and Nobel laureate (2008). Krugman wrote last week about the “food crisis, the second one to hit the world in the last three years.” His key statement: “what really stands out is the extent to which severe weather events have disrupted agricultural production. And these severe weather events are exactly the kind of thing we’d expect to see as rising concentrations of greenhouse gases change our climate— which means that the current food prices surge may be just beginning.” What warming? The puny 0.2 degrees C we’ve had since 1940? On food, we’re currently diverting a huge proportion of the world’s crops to biofuels. We’ve created an artificial shortage of the world’s already-scarce cropland. Two years ago, the high food prices were driven by a very high price for oil, so our corn ethanol plants were running full-tilt. World food prices nearly doubled. This year, the high food prices are driven by a combination of high fuel prices, and diverse bad weather in the U.S., Russia, Australia and China, to name a few weather-challenged regions. The farming gods are always fickle. They bring drought, floods, bitter winters, heatstroke summers, hailstorms and untimely frosts—at their whim. When humans started to farm, their most important gods were always the “earth

Talking about severe weather, how about Cahokia, the only city ever built by the American Indians? It was founded on corn, in Illinois, the heart of today’s Corn Belt. And it grew to perhaps as large as 50,000 people. After 1200 AD, Cahokia suffered two 30-year droughts in 60 years. The city disappeared. The people who could walked away. In 2200 B.C., a “little ice age” hit the whole world. A belt of irrigated agricultures around the world failed simultaneously—and didn’t recover for about 300 years! Southern Greece, the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, and what’s now Iraq and Syria all collapsed. Many thousands died. Nomad shepherds took over the parched land. The first Chinese dynasty collapsed then in the Yellow River Valley due to drought—and “little ice ages” have since brought down five more-recent Chinese dynasties. The last to fall was the fabled Kublai Khan during the Little Ice Age. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the Little Ice Age brought three massive sea floods within a few decades, each of which drowned 100,000 people. The coasts of Europe are lined with huge sand dunes created by hurricanes. Most of these dunes

date from the Little Ice Age, not from the Medieval Warming. The peer-reviewed journal Natural Hazards in June, 2005, published a special issue on extreme weather events over the last century. It found there is less severe weather as the world warms, with no increase in thunderstorms, hailstorms, tornados, blizzards, Asian monsoons, heat waves or floods. Blogger Jo Nova reports that a recent re-examination of global tropical storms and hurricanes found no trend in the past 30 years. Russia frequently has droughts and Australia has a cycle of flooding. Krugman is trying to frighten us about what’s very likely the finest weather humanity has ever seen. Obviously, we’re still getting heat waves, blizzards and some hurricanes—but fewer of them. Nevertheless, you are three times as likely to read about the severe weather we do get—because the media are seeking it out. Our Nobel Prize Winner strikes out on both food and climate change. For each fuel price, determine the $/ Hr revenue required to equal the ROI base goal. This can be done using the “Goal Seek” feature in Excel. Record the fuel price in column one and the calculated $/Hr revenue in column two. The difference between the base case $/Hr revenue and the calculated $/Hr revenue for the new fuel price is recorded in column three. Column three is the fuel surcharge in $/Hr needed to maintain the base ROI. Using the table you created, the total dollar amount of the fuel surcharge billed to the customer equals the hours flown for the customer multiplied by the $/Hr surcharge.

No matter how you bill, you need to collect the total dollar amount of the fuel surcharge to achieve your ROI goal. If you bill the customer in a unit different for $/Hr then you will need to make the conversion from $/Hr to the customer billing unit. Using an agricultural operator as an example, the AG operator might need to convert the $/Hr surcharge to a $/pound or $/acre surcharge. The important point is to collect for all the hours flown to complete the customer job from the time you left your base until you returned. This charge might include a long ferry distance or additional flying time due to the layout of the job requiring many short passes. To achieve the ROI goal the conversion factor from $/Hr to $/pound or $/acre must consider the extra flying. The fuel surcharge might vary from customer to customer depending on the difficulty of the job. Many AG operators pay the pilot a percentage of the gross revenue. The fuel surcharge should not be counted in the gross revenue used to calculate the pilot commission or you will not achieve the ROI goal. NAAA holds spring board of directors meeting The National Agricultural Aviation Association’s (NAAA) Board of Directors met in Arlington, Virginia February 10-12, 2011 with President Rick Richter of California presiding. Fourteen committees of NAAA held meetings Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, with each committee chairperson reporting to the NAAA Board Saturday afternoon. The National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation’s (NAAREF), a safety and education component of NAAA, board of directors also held their meetings during this time. The Leadership Training Program held its spring meeting and graduated the 2010-2011 class. Two hundred forty NAAA members in the past 15 years have attended the Leadership Training program sponsored by Syngenta. The Awards committee reported to

“Agricultural Aviation, America’s Winning Hand.” The 2012 convention will have NAAA members returning to Savannah, Reno/Silver Legacy Hotel in 2013 and back to Savannah in 2014. The Insurance committee stated it would be participating in a General Sessions Mock Trial at this year’s convention. The Long Range Planning committee expressed to the board members their view foresees a possible reduction in grants coming from FAA and EPA, particularly as this affects the Agricultural Research

Station (ARS) in College Station, Texas and funding for the PAASS program, respectively. The committee chairperson stressed to the board to be considering alternative methods to fund the ARS, as well as other projects of the NAAA. It was noted the number of pilot members could shrink as larger aircraft are put into use. The committee is looking into hiring a professional association counselor to examine the NAAA governing structure, membership categories and revenue stream and offering guidance on how to continue doing things

Furthermore, the committee has directed staff to investigate working with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) to share databases to improve membership for both associations. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,695 NAAA members, 755 were Operator, 37 Affiliated Operator, 430 Pilot, 32 Pilot Graduates, 3 Participating Pilot, 178 Allied, 26 Affiliated Allied, 132 Associate, 28 International, 35 State and 40 WNAAA, as compared to 1,637 total members the same time in 2009. The Research and Technology committee reported that a “sensitive area” area database called “Driftwatch™” has been developed by Purdue University in Indiana for use in that state. chemical companies, state agencies and organizations. The database will be in use in three additional states for 2011 and is to be made available to other states wishing to use it. The committee is also examining the possibility of a group of members visiting Brazilian operations in 2011 and suggested that NAAA sponsor the trip. The committee’s report advised the directors that certification, similar to Operation S.A.F.E., would be desirable for aerial spreading of cover crop seeds in Midwestern states to ensure proper application of the various seeds used for cover crop production. The Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations committee discussed “hot fueling” and concluded there is a need for all operators to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for both hot fueling and loading that addresses known safety issues. The committee said AmSafe airbags have been approved for installation on Air Tractor aircraft and approval on the Thrush is expected in the near future. An FAA representative attended the committee meeting and attempted to clarify the misunderstanding about Operations Specifications (Ops Specs) for Part 137 operators. He clearly stated that there are no Ops Specs for 137 but that there is a requirement for FSDOs to enter each operator’s vital information into the Web OPSS database. The committee was advised that for any ag-plane that operated under a Part 137 certificate, it “probably” should be listed on that operator’s Web OPSS information. It was also noted that per Part 91.313 rules a restricted category aircraft could not operate from an airport where commercial passenger carrying operations (Part 135 or 121) operations are being conducted without a waiver. The committee advised that operators obtain a waiver if they anticipate operation from one of these airports from their local FSDO in the beginning of the year and renew it annually. NAAREF reported that BASF would continue in 2011 its partnership with NAAA by funding up to $225 for participation in an Operation S.A.F.E. spray clinic or toward the purchase of nozzles or spray equipment. September training session held in La Junta, Colorado. The NAAREF Pilot Rescue video started a year ago is nearing completion and will be distributed by mail to NAAA members. The video addresses first responders/ rescuers on how to safely extract a pilot from an ag-aircraft crash. PAASS will add a modest price increase of $10 for attendance to the 2011/2012 PAASS program. It was reported to the board that after viewing several locations not suitable for an NAAA office, the real estate agent was released. Tthe search

for another NAAA office location will continue with a new agent. The New Mexico AAA made its third, consecutive $2,000 contribution to NAAREF. The association pledged to continue for three more years with a $3,000 contribution each year for a total of $15,000 contributed in a six-year period. The association raises money for the contribution at its annual convention barrel throwing contest. The WNAAA essay scholarship theme for 2011 will be, “How to Promote Agricultural Aviation

Positively.” All contributions to the program will have to be made electronically. In 2011, Sue Stuart of Texas will be the first woman from the WNAAA to attend the Leadership Training Program. The WNAAA will be inviting wives of the Leadership Training Program to become involved with WNAAA. The 2011 NAAA spring board of directors meeting adjourned Saturday afternoon, February 12.

Return of the OE600 engine by Bill Lavender MIDLAND, TX — With prices of turboprop engines and Jet-A continually increasing, finding an affordable engine conversion for a large ag-plane can be difficult. One solution could be the 600

SHP reciprocating OE600, manufactured by Trace Engines based in Midland, Texas. Built on the design of a watercooled, V-8 piston engine, the Trace aircraft engine is capable of burning av-gas and in certification for 91 octane

Ryan Tomcala flew the 2010 season with an OE600-powered AT-401 Air Tractor. He uses 52” of manifold pressure (MP) and 4,400 RPMs for takeoff. When loaded his power setting is 45” MP and 4,200 RPM, burning 40 GPH. As the load lightens, he reduces power to 36” MP and 3,800 RPM with a fuel burn of 27 GPH. He figures with full fuel (123 U.S. gallons) and a full hopper (390 U.S. gallons) of a chemical mix, configured for spraying, the aircraft’s gross weight is approximately 8,900 pounds.

automobile gas. The conversion costs for the 300 and 400 series Air Tractor is considerably less than that of a turboprop, making it an ideal alternative for the ag-av operator. The OE600 was originally designed and manufactured by Magellan Aerospace Corporation and called the Orenda Engine. In 2006, Trace bought the rights to the Orenda and received its production certificate on October, 14, 2009. Trace is a limited partnership entity of about 25 investors, primarily based in Midland, TX. The company currently has 25 employees and the production capability of up to 120 engines per year. Trace also manufactures the TowBot, a $7,500— $12,000 remote-controlled aircraft mover. he first OE600 Trace conversion was launched on November 11, 2010 and was installed on a newly painted and with a fresh annual inspection AT-401 belonging to Neal Aircraft, Inc. of Slaton, Texas. Neal Aircraft is a Trace dealer and will use the aircraft for demonstrations

and ag-operations. Neal Aircraft has also ordered a second Trace conversion for an AT-301 that is awaiting the airframe for installation. Trace has bought its own AT-301 and will convert it to Trace engine power for demonstration flights starting this spring. The Trace conversion is a complete firewall forward installation with an approximate price tag of $260,000 USD. TRACE is currently offering discounts on conversions purchased this year. The engine makes up about $200,000 of the conversion cost, which includes installation, all hoses, oil tank, radiator, engine mount, McCauley 106” propeller, Electronics International digital instrumentation, intercooler and single-stage Garrett turbo charger. All components are of aerospace origin with tolerances held closer than the typical blueprinted and balanced reciprocating engine. Turn around time for the conversion is two—three weeks at the Midland facility. The overhaul cost is fixed to not exceed $40,000 giving an operating cost of $26 an hour based

crankshaft in place. Most reciprocating engines have only four-bolt mains. The improved aerodynamics and reduced weight, when compared to a similar radial engine aircraft, has the effect of adding an additional 80—100 SHP. Because of the turbocharger, the OE600 has the ability to develop full power under any density altitude an ag-plane would operate making its performance comparable to a turbinepowered aircraft. Developing 500 SHP, the engine’s fuel flow is 36 GPH. At the typical operating power setting of 65%, the fuel flow is 27 GPH. Using today’s auto-gas priced at less than $3.00, the engine’s fuel cost with auto-gas would be around $80-$90 an hour.

Cylinder compression checks should be taken at annual inspection or 400-500 hours, whichever occurs first. If needed, the removable steel cylinder sleeves and pistons can be changed. Otherwise, oil and oil filter changes at 50-hour intervals with regular oil analysis’s and engine monitoring are the only expected maintenance requirements between overhauls. The OE600 Trace aircraft engine has also been installed on the twin Aero Commander, Chinese N5A ag-aircraft and the de Havilland Beaver. Trace will be acquiring Supplimental Type Certificates for other ag-aircraft besides the Air Tractor and N5A. During the third quarter of 2011, Trace expects to have its TE750 engine certified. It will be able to produce 750 SHP and will have an updated electronic fuel injection and ignition system.

FAA Description of Airworthiness Concern: An AT-402 airplane was recently reported having a large fatigue crack in an engine mount tube at the LH firewall attach location. The same airplane also has a fatigue crack in the engine mount at the forward lower left lug, which is covered by AD 2009-11-05. There is currently no mandatory directed inspection for the cracked tube found by the firewall location. the FAA is concerned there may be other Air Tractor engine mounts that have not been inspected and that could have a fatigue crack present near a firewall location. Request for information: The FAA requests information from Air Tractor owners/operators and users/maintainers regarding in-service problems of fatigue cracks encountered for Air Tractor engine mounts, specifically near the firewall attach locations. FAA issues STC for Spectrum Electrostatic aerial spray system for Air Tractor AT-400 and AT-500 series Houston, Texas -- The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) SA09719AC to Houston-based Spectrum Electrostatic Sprayers, Inc., for use of the Spectrum electrostatic aerial spray system on Air Tractor AT-400 and AT-500 series aircraft. The low-volume, high-pressure Spectrum electrostatic system induces an electrical charge to each spray droplet, thus activating electrostatic forces which attract the charged droplets to the upper and under surfaces of the target vegetation. The system has been proven to improve spray deposition, reduce spray fallout and off-site drift, and improve control of target insects, diseases, weeds and brush. The Spectrum electrostatic system is widely used by aerial applicators around the world to improve spray performance,

reduce operating costs, and to enhance environmental and human safety. The system is now used by aerial applicators in North America to spray cotton, rice, rangeland, corn, soybeans, potatoes, sugar beets, vineyards and other crops. It is used to control soybean rust in Brazil, to spray sugarcane in Africa, and to protect cereal grains in Australia. The system has undergone flight testing approved by the FAA prior to issuance of the STC. Users purchasing the system will receive a copy of the STC, along with an FAA-approved Flight Manual Supplement, ICA, installation drawings, and an FAA Form 8130-3, Authorized Release Certificate. Components are manufactured under FAA-PMA, through a licensing agreement with Zee Systems, Inc., San Antonio, Texas.
