Jeff Tidwell, ArAAA president, presents Bill Lavender with Associate of the Year award in North Little Rock, Arkansas January 14.

Do it for them Ten years ago, I visited Riceland Aviation in Jennings, Louisiana for an article about Plummer Props conversions. This article was about a change in props for the radial-powered M18 by a Canadian company and the balancing of those props by Jeffries Airworks. The article was also about Riceland Aviation, owned and operated at that time by Billy Precht, Sr. and Jr. In February of this year, Billy, Jr. was killed in a turbine-powered M18 while flying for Riceland Aviation.

change the statistics? Obviously, only repeating safety efforts used in the past won’t do it.

January was a year ago when I visited Aeroclube Carazinho in Brazil, where I was hosted by its president, Dalton Schilichting. Dalton was the chief pilot instructor for the ag-aviation school at the club. Last month, he was killed when the wing separated from his Ipanema while spraying.

Don’t do this for AgAir Update, your state or national associations. Do it for your family. There is someone in this world that needs you to come home from a day of flying. Do it for them.

Any ag-aviation fatality is a grave loss. For me, it strikes closer to home when I know the pilot, like with Billy and Dalton. Billy’s accident was one of three fatalities in the U.S. in the first two months of 2013, equal to the total fatality count for all of 2012. It simply has to change. The only one who can do this is the pilot. You have heard this mantra before, maybe too many times. Could there be a numbing effect?

Keep Turning...

My hope is for every ag-operation and each pilot take the time to add no less than one new aspect to the safety equation. What can you do to enhance you staying safe? There has to be an endless list of actions you haven’t explored that could make you a safer pilot.

Until next month,

The industry has nine months more of flying in 2013. Its end, December 31, 2013, is only a day on the calendar. Ongoing safety efforts don’t stop on any one day. That day only defines a time window for measuring those efforts. Is the industry going to pay attention to these three fatalities in the U.S. and work harder than ever to not have another one in 2013? Statistically, it is going to be challenging, but not impossible. What would

band radio If I have brought this up in the past forgive me. What I am wondering is, would it be advantageous for our industry to have a separate air to air aviation frequency? This I think would be useful for those of us who travel to other areas for work. If you happen to be loaded for a field near where someone else is operating you could at least try and talk to them. Most of us who travel have a comm on board and not the business band radio of the contractor you are helping. I believe even some competitors would like to be able to communicate with each other in those situations. Bryan Hauschild Fergus Falls, MN Hello Bryan It was good to see you in South Dakota, if only for a moment. The common frequency idea is a good one and you would think an idea long ago in place. I know for General Aviation, often 123.45 is used. I think the quickest way to implement this idea is to use 123.45 for initial contact, then go to an agreed upon freq. I realize many agplanes don’t have a comm radio. However, for those that travel, most likely would, or should. Buying one would be good investment, as you never know when you may need it!

I have posted a survey question about this on AgAir Update’s eEdition. Let’s see what happens. Thanks for thinking of AAU with your idea. —Bill

mystery aircraft In regards to your Mystery Aircraft Photo in your March 2013 issue, could it be a De Kellis Air Truck? identifying the De Kellis Air Truck. Thanks for all the extra effort to do this. I just thought I knew how to search on Google, obviously not! You did a great job in helping AAU put a name to this aircraft.— Bill

Hello Sharon; You could very well be correct. I did a Google search, too, before publishing the photo. I found a reference to a plane in Oroville, but not enough to identify the one in AAU! Unless someone tells us differently, we will go GE Aviation with it being a De Kellis Air Truck!—Bill The mystery plane is a Kellis Air-Truck. It says it is a single place open triplane, no other data. You can go to www. aerofiles.com and see a better photo. Mike Ramsey Garwood, Texas From a blog on internet: DE KELLIS AIR TRUCK — It was a great surprise to see the photo of Tom De Kellis’ airplane in the December 2002 issue. There are photos of this aircraft posted on the walls of Oroville Aviation, Oroville, California. Common legend around the airport is that the Air Truck flew exactly once and it took everything the R-985 had to keep it in the air. The six wings were from J-3 Cubs and the mission of the aircraft was not agricultural work but to haul a jeep to back country trips in the Sierra Nevada. That certainly explains the boxey fuselage. It appears your photo was taken at the Oroville Airport. —Hugh Mattingly Paradise, CA

Minimizing effects of high temp, low humidity Development of non volatile mixtures and invert emulsions for low volume applications as tools to increase product efficacy through control of evaporation losses. by Alan McCracken When working with agricultural aircraft on a hot dry day I often question the logic in loading an aircraft with water knowing that a very significant portion will never reach the crop due to evaporation losses, especially so when the product label specifies high volumes of 3-5 gals/acre. On many occasions when I applied sun protectant I observed that the whitish cream stayed wet for many hours even though it had some water, an invert emulsion. This observation led me to contact chemical suppliers searching for products that could be mixed in the field to form a stable invert emulsion with agrochemcials. This short report deals with some aspects of this development

and potential benefits for aerial application with emphasis on improved deposition under hot, dry conditions. As background, we should ask the question, “Why is Ultra Low Volume (ULV) application the standard for the most difficult pests in the world to control, namely mosquitoes, locusts, boll weevil and forest spraying?” The most evident reason is the ULV technique provides consistent and effective control. One of the main reasons why is because of control of droplet size, using

non volatile formulations and suitable equipment that produce narrow droplet spectrums. My question is, “Why do we insist on using water and even increased volumes of water in many cases, knowing that the water evaporates causing the droplet sizes to literally change by the minute due to evaporation losses?” The researchers have invented fancy models to predict where the droplets might go. However, this is not practical since the rate of evaporation of each chemical mixture is different and hence droplet size will change dramatically with any change in temperature/ humidity during the operation.

Author with the Micron ULVA

It’s my opinion the use of water for aerial application should be restricted to conditions with low temperatures and high humidities, in all other applications we should use “non-volatile” carriers to ensure that the product reaches the target area. Only in this way can we expect to ever master the control of spray drift since a major cause of drift is the reduction in droplet size due to evaporation. Several concepts have been evaluated including: 1. Addition of a non volatile carrier [glycerine] to the spray solution in a sufficiently high concentration to reduce the rate of evaporation. This option is very attractive for low volume applications and now in large scale usage in Brazil since the glycerine is easily mixed with most agrochemicals and is also much heavier than water. 2. Adjusting the amount of water in the chemical mixture to maintain a highly concentrated solution that is less volatile than water. Field experience under conditions of severe evaporation has demonstrated that a level of 15-20% of “non-volatile” component of the formulation is sufficient to provide adequate protection of the spray droplets against evaporation losses. For a total spray volume of 5 liters/ hectare (5 gal/ac) this translates to 1 liter/hectare (1 gal/ac) of product + oil , either vegetable or mineral with suitable emulsifiers to produce a stable emulsion. 3. Preparation of an invert emulsion. This is a very promising alternative for low and ultra low volume spraying and two options have been evaluated, one based on mineral oil and the other utilizing soybean oil. These

products were easily mixed and showed excellent stability for many hours with widely used fungicides and insecticides both SC and EC type formulations.

Example of uniform droplets on a stem of corn using a tracer product

Equipment used for initial testing Tests conducted with a MICRON ULVA battery powered rotary atomizer designed for the application of ULV formulations of insecticides/fungicides and widely used in developing countries. This hand tool is of great value since it produces a very narrow droplet spectrum and is easily adjusted for different droplet sizes by simply changing the number of batteries. The Micron ULVA sprayer was used to evaluate effects of different formulations on droplet size and evaporation losses.

expect to lose 5-15% of the chemical product since the water based droplets will evaporate and drift to a neighboring farm, especially that fraction of the spray cloud in droplets under 150 microns, which could vary from 5-15%, or more.

Parameters of evaluation

Observations

1. Ease of mixing invert emulsions When the products were added to water and vice versa when the products were added to the chemical formulation a uniform creamy emulsion was formed immediately which did not cling to the wall of the sample bottle. 2. Time to mark water sensitive cards: During deposition tests using water sensitive cards, it was observed the droplets from the invert emulsion combinations took a much longer time to mark the cards than normally with water, showing the water content was secure within the oil. 3. Time to dry on collection mirrors: With all of the treatments, the droplets took much longer to dry on the mirrors confirming their effect on reducing evaporation losses.

In each case, the rotary atomizer produced a very narrow droplet spectrum as shown with the NMD:VMD ratio being very close to 1:1. When the number of batteries were reduced this resulted in a slower rotational speed of the rotary atomizer resulting in the production of larger spray droplets. As expected the lifetime of the droplets increased with an increase in droplet size.

Those of us who observe an application by air know it often takes between 5-10 seconds for the spray cloud to be deposited. In such a case, we could

When the “invert emulsions” were applied the droplets remained ‘wet’ for more than 30 minutes confirming a very low rate of evaporation, thereby ensuring that the droplets will reach the target crop or pest. The fact the product remains ‘wet’ should enhance the uptake of the product within the leaf. However, in one instance a heavy rainfall occurred just after the application that resulted in the product being ineffective since it was washed off the leaves. Further evaluations have driven me to adjust the chemical mixtures to ensure the spray droplets will reach the target and then dry to reduce the risk of washoff. In most cases this can be achieved through using a non-volatile carrier. For example, with low volumes of 1 ltr/ha (3 gal/ac) fungicides .5 lts/ha + .5 lts/ ha of the non volative carrier in an invert emulsion, then we can literally eliminate questions about temperature and relative humidity, since evaporation loss is no longer an issue.

By simple deduction, the droplet size produced by the equipment will then be the same size when they reach the target.

Observations

conditions of high temperature and low relative humidity, one could expect to lose all the droplets under 100 microns through evaporation.

With an excellent narrow droplet spectrum of 98% of the spray volume between 100-350 microns, experience has taught us this is the ideal droplet spectrum for the control of difficult problems including soybean Asian rust and spider mites. Under

Wind speed There are many articles and product labels published that state for minimum drift to apply with little or no wind. The reality is the complete opposite. There is almost always a higher risk of drift under such conditions for two obvious reasons. If

the spray droplets are hanging in the air they are subjected to greater evaporation losses resulting in smaller droplets that are much more prone to drift. Secondly, under such conditions there is a much higher risk of inversion conditions and these small droplets may then be carried long distances. Flying height This is also another issue that is frequently debated among pilots and technical agronomists. Flying too high above the crop results in major losses in droplet size due to evaporation losses and also to crosswinds. Furthermore, flying too high results in loss of one of the major advantages of aerial application which is movement of the foliage enabling increased crop penetration. Have proven repeatedly that for the control of pests/diseases within the crops aerial application is greatly superior to ground application [2x] especially so at low wind speeds. Flying too low can also increases drift due to ground effect that forces the wind tip vortices high above the aircraft.

Graph illustrating evaporation losses at an airstrip in Argentina. Note the dramatic change in the rate of evaporation between 08:00 hrs and 11:00 hrs. Equipment and control of droplet size This is the most critical issue and yet neglected by a large majority of operators who concern themselves more about foiling the volume of spray solution specified on the product label. Drift control products In my experience these types of products can only make a positive contribution in reducing drift if

all other aspects have been taken care of first. In such instance, they could be the icing on the cake. However, experience has also shown such products can greatly reduce the effectiveness of contact acting products, especially when spraying a dense canopy that requires smaller droplets to obtain adequate penetration.

Joe Huysmans—from Belgium to Brawley Born in Belgium in 1937, Jozef Huysmans lived his early years in a German-occupied country torn by the ravages of war. He’s one of very few Americans today that can say he has seen the business end of a B-17 bomber. His memories of that time are something he doesn’t speak easily about. Joe spent seven years in the Belgian Air Force during which time he earned a private pilot's license. In 1962, he

where flying seemed to be less restricted than in his home country. At twenty-five, with a student visa in hand and with any cash Joe could scrape together, he signed on as a parttime

crew member on a bulk carrier ship and set sail for America. In 1962 the Cuban missile crisis played havoc with Atlantic shipping causing his trip to be delayed and port of departure changed. The delay would turn out to be a fortuitous one. He finally landed in New Orleans and made his way to Nevada. “The school was good for me. I learned a lot,” he said. “We’d all go out to a place in the desert and take turns making passes in a Cub. We wound up with about ten ag hours and a commercial license.”

Joe speaks with the bitten consonants of a European accent. He is soft spoken and as easy going as a summer breeze. He is quiet and reserved, self depreciating, polite, and humble.

Joe left the school with a green card and a friend who had a car. They traveled around the West looking for a job when he found his first seat flying a back pack Super-Cub in Idaho. “I worked for a bald head man named Curly,” he laughed. American irony can be a strange thing for those who aren’t accustomed to it. He thought about his first season and the timing of his trip. “If I had been here three months earlier, I probably would have run out of money long before finding a job.”

His career has spanned fifty years. Flying back pack cubs in Idaho to Emair Stearmans in Hawaii, to flying a mixed bag of airplanes in Nicaragua where he met and married his wife Maria. Fortynine years and six children later, they are still together. He’s flown all over the country from the Northwest to the Southeast. Currently he flies summers in an AT 402 for Schertz Aerial Service in Illinois and winters in an S2RT Thrush for Farm Aviation in Brawley, California, but makes his home in Miami, Florida. “Why Miami?” I asked.

When I asked Joe for an interview and some photos, he looked at me like I was crazy. I explained to him that his was a unique and interesting story. He considered the idea for a minute then shrugged, “I suppose so. However, I don’t think anyone will believe you.”

During the sixties and seventies he lived and worked in Nicaragua. He would travel to the States in the summer flying in Texas, Florida and Georgia. Winters would find him back in Nicaragua flying and raising his family, but in 1978 the Sandinista Revolution made Nicaragua a very dangerous place. Joe looked for a home in the States that would be a good fit for his family and found that Miami, Florida with its Latin culture, fit the bill. ”The Sandinista soldiers were targeting kids.” He said about his move. “I had to get them out of there and find a safe place that would not be too much of a culture shock for them.” As for Joe, traveling doesn’t seem to bother him. “It’s part of the job and what I do.” I asked Joe about changes he’s seen in the industry. He thought a while then mentioned the advent of GPS and turbine engines as being the biggest improvements in equipment. “It’s the attitude toward business that I think has come a long way,” he added. “Back then, pilots were considered a dime a dozen and airplanes were cheap. operators just didn’t seem to care if you crashed or how you sprayed a field. They are a lot more professional and conscientious nowadays.” He looked over his glasses and spoke about regulations and restrictions. “We really only have ourselves to blame for much of that because of the way business was done in the past. We have gotten a lot better, but we have to be very careful and take care that we don’t give legislators a reason to keep adding more restrictions.” How about Joe’s take on the future of the industry? “I think it will just get tougher, safety is always a big concern and the new pilots coming up need to learn a lot more and have the patience it takes to make it in this business.” Any regrets? “Well, I never did make it to Australia. But that’s okay. I’ve met a lot of good people, made a lot of good friends and have flown in some wonderful places.” I then asked Joe to sum up his career so far. A thoughtful grin came to his face. “It’s like a marriage,” he says. “It’s the first fifty years that are the hardest.” Fifty years indeed, and still going strong. Joe Huysmans can attest to that.

WRK, Mundell Enterprises team up for Spike applications by Dennis R. Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas LLC WRK of Arkansas flew to Laverne, Oklahoma early in February to help Terry Mundell have his AT-402 tweaked perfectly for Spike applications. Terry has a pending Spike application contract and wanted to be sure he was doing the best job possible. His AT402 was outfitted with a Transland 23502 (sometimes referred to as a 10-vane spreader) and a Transland Meterate gate box. Spike application rates range from 3 lb/ac to 15 lb/ac. It is very difficult to accurately meter these low rates without some type of metering rheostat controllable gate.

WRK’s dry collection system was shipped by LTL freight to Mundell headquarters at Rosston, Oklahoma in advance of the test date(s). Terry, his crew, and I assembled the collectors on the day I arrived in preparation for an early morning test routine the next day. Mother Nature cooperated with an excellent weather window for testing. Several evaluations were conducted so Terry could determine the exact rheostat number to set the controller for the desired application rates. Uniform swath widths of 55 to 60 feet were selected as the optimum operating criteria for this type of application.

insights

Seven tips to get the summer flying season off to a safe start “Upon the Performance of Each Rests the Fate of All.” If you’ve ever attended the PAASS Program at a state convention then you have heard those words uttered more than once. NAAA and its sister organization NAAREF take that motto seriously and you should too, particularly now that the summer flying season is in full swing and all eyes are upon us. With that in mind, here is a daily checklist to follow to ensure your season is safe.

do a good job for your customer, it can be very easy to justify an action “just this one time.” Spur-of-the-moment decisions can bite you. Establish your own personal minimums after giving consideration to all conceivable hazards and evaluating mitigation measures for those hazards. Once established, the safety bar should not be lowered just because you were able to get away with something once.

Guard Against Fatigue: Increased activity leads to longer flying days and less time off for rest. Many times pilot error accidents are the result of poor decision making that can be traced directly to the effects of fatigue. Fatigue is not always easy to recognize, but when tasks normally completed with ease require extra concentration, chances are the effects of fatigue are starting to seep in. It is a known fact a person is a very poor judge of his or her own physical or mental condition.

Bee Careful: Regardless of the cause, the rapid decline of honeybees over the last five to seven years has everyone from beekeepers to fruit and vegetable growers to the EPA feeling the sting of the phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder (CCD). This has major implications for agriculture since approximately one-third of all crops in the United States require insect pollination. The USDA-Agricultural Research Service has stated that CCD could threaten the pollination industry if it becomes more widespread. As such, operators and pilots need to be attuned to pollinator concerns and mindful of protecting bees while they work. Remember to follow state rules on locating and notifying beekeepers of intended chemical applications. Additional stewardship measures include reading and following label directions and to determine whether bees are foraging. If so, be mindful of the pesticide’s toxicity to bees and apply late in the evening or early morning when bees aren’t foraging.

Senior Air Medical Examiner Dr. Mark Ivey, a helicopter pilot and an expert in sleep medicine, has some simple advice to combat in-the-cockpit fatigue: take a nap. “They’re not just for kids,” Ivey informed Agricultural Aviation. “Humans have two periods during the 24 hours where they are sleepiest: 0300 and 1500. These are also the times when fatal motor vehicle accidents occur the most. Most ag operators are not flying at 0300, and 1500 is usually the heat of the day. So take a nap for 20-40 minutes around 1500 and then take one or two cups of brewed coffee.” Remember to get a good night’s sleep too. Drink Plenty of Water: Dehydration sets in quickly when the heat index rises and can lead to more severe heat-related illnesses. Keep yourself and your crew hydrated by providing plenty of fresh water to replace what gets lost during the day through perspiration, urination and respiration. Early symptoms of mild dehydration are headaches, chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain and constipation. Urine with a strong odor along with a yellow or amber color indicates the need for more water. Thirst is the most obvious sign, but people typically don’t realize they are thirsty until well after the shortage of water occurs. Rehydrating is another reason to take frequent breaks. Establish Personal Minimums: NAAA encourages each pilot to establish personal minimums and make them hard and fast rules to live by. In your desire to get the job completed quickly and still

Watch Out for Obstructions: Obstructions have always been hazardous to low-level pilots’ health, but the number of telecommunications towers, GPS differential signal towers, meteorological evaluation towers, wind turbines and other obstructions erected in agricultural regions has increased significantly over the past several years. Be on the lookout for new obstructions, including unmanned aircraft systems, and use every method available to learn the location of obstructions in or near the field to be treated. From 2000 to 2010, 7.2 percent of aerial application fatalities were the result of collisions with towers and 13.0 percent were the result of collisions with wires, including guy wires connected to towers. Taken together, tower and wire collisions accounted for 1 out of every 5 ag aviation fatalities during this span. This is an a matter of grave concern to aerial applicators and NAAA. You can help by joining NAAA’s “Let’s Be Fair About

Sharing the Air” campaign. Several tools are available at www. agaviation.org/towers.htm to aid ag pilots in their outreach efforts. One of the simplest and best examples is NAAA’s wind tower safety stuffers, which illustrate how poor tower marking and improper wind turbine siting put pilots’ lives and farmers’ livelihood at risk. The double-sided safety stuffers fit into a No. 10 envelope and can easily be enclosed along with a customer invoice or letter campaign to county planners and local leaders. They are available in packs of 100 at no charge to NAAA operator members and to non-members for $25 per pack, Wind tower safety stuffer requests should be directed to NAAA at 202-546-5722 or information@agaviaiton.org. Ferry Above 500 AGL: When ferrying, remember the PAASS safety phrase “Ferry Above Five and Stay Alive” to keep yourself above power lines, unmarked towers and other ag aircraft conducting spray operations. Another important consideration is ferrying at or above 500 feet is required by FAA regulations over all but open water or sparsely populated areas. In Arkansas this season, the FAA has issued violations for aircraft ferrying below this altitude. Flying at a higher altitude has the additional advantage of allowing more reaction time in the case of an aircraft or engine malfunction.

Fly Safe! These are but a few of the safety reminders NAAREF sends to operators and pilots through ongoing Fly Safe alerts. In the interest of safety and the benefit of all, Fly Safe messages are shared with NAAA members and non-members—specifically, all operators and pilots with a valid email address on file with NAAA. A fax option is also available. These important safety alerts are sent every other Monday in April, May, June and August and every Monday in July, which historically has been the peak month for ag accidents. Additional safety reminders are issued whenever aviation activity warrants them. If you are a Part 137 operator or ag pilot who has not been getting Fly Safe, please contact NAAA Director of Education & Safety Ken Degg at (202) 546-5722 or kdegg@agaviation.org to be added to the recipient list. Although this advice is free, the resources to produce it is not. Funding for NAAREF services and programs, such as PAASS, the Fly Safe campaign and Operation S.A.F.E., comes from NAAA and other donors willing to invest in the future of agricultural aviation. We invite you to join the cause of preserving and protecting the aerial application industry, your livelihood and your life by joining NAAA if you aren’t a member already. To join, call (202) 546-5722 or visit www.agaviation.org/content/ membership to apply online.

NAAA, fellow GA groups host Harrison Ford on Capitol Hill On March 19, the House General Aviation (GA) Caucus, co-chaired by U.S. Reps. John Barrow (D-GA) and Sam Graves (R-MO), held a discussion about general aviation issues on Capitol Hill with Academy Award nominee and pilot Harrison Ford. NAAA was a co-host of the event along with 11 other general aviation organizations. Ford used the time to discuss the likely economic and safety issues that would occur should almost 200 contract air traffic control towers close as FAA is proposing. He also discussed the negative effects that would occur to our aviation and overall economy should aviation user fees be implemented as will likely be proposed in President Obama’s upcoming FY 2014 budget. The event was attended by numerous members of the House of Representatives, media and their staff. Ford, probably best known for his acting roles as intergalactic space pilot Han Solo in the Star Wars films and archeologist Indiana Jones in the film franchise that bears the same name, is a passionate pilot and humanitarian who described how flying helped reinvent his life some 20 years ago. The actor, with NAAA’s

He went on to talk about sequestration and the impact that closing of hundreds of towers would have on the small airports with towers in jeopardy. Ford specifically mentioned ag aviation and its importance in treating 20 percent of our nation’s crops as one of the crucial roles general aviation plays in the U.S. and the dire affects that user fees and

tower closings would have in grounding such general aviation operations. Graves thanked Ford for his advocacy on behalf of general aviation and for bringing a spotlight to significant issues affecting the industry. NAAA is appreciative of Congressman Graves and his staff for their work in setting up the GA Caucus event with Ford. The Association will continue to opposed user fees and monitor the effects of sequestration on aerial application. The FAA plans to close as many as 173 towers on April 7, with 16 more to shut down on Sept. 30.

Are you being led by God’s spirit? “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14). Almost everyone has to get out into this sinful world to make a living for our family. What really demonstrates whether we are led by God’s Spirit, or not, is how we react to the circumstances of our life. Before believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we are naturally governed and ruled by our sinful nature

(Ephesians 2:1-3). We didn’t have a choice—we are natural born sinners because we inherited Adam’s sin nature. After we are born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit of God we are a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17).

God doesn’t leave Christians to our own worldly wisdom. God the Father has sent the Holy Spirit to live in all Christians to teach and lead us (John 14:16, 26). To be led by God’s Spirit we must deny our sinful human nature and yield our body to God’s Spirit! The primary way God’s Spirit leads Christians is through opening our mind to understanding God’s Word. Christians have to make a determined effort to

study God’s Word to know what God expects from us in our earthly life (2 Timothy 2:15). God’s Word is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). David wrote, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word…Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9, 11). Solomon wrote, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). “Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truths and teach me” (Psalm 25:4-5). Obedience to God’s Word always produces the spiritual fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

self-control

Only Christians with a strong desire to be led by the Holy Spirit will have the determination to overrule our sinful nature and allow God’s Spirit to lead us. The Holy Spirit will not force us to obey God’s perfect will for our life. We cannot be led by the Holy Spirit until we voluntarily surrender our life to Him. Christians are to grow spiritually; and spiritual growth doesn’t come easy—it takes a strong effort on our part. Yielding to the leadership of the Holy Spirit involves every second of every day of our life.

“God guides the humble in justice, and God teaches the humble His way” (Psalm 25:9)—religious pride always hinders a Christian’s spiritual growth! It’s easy to look spiritual in church—but not so easy to deny our sinful nature and be led by God’s Spirit in our everyday life! “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6). God’s Spirit will not lead prideful Christians! Jesus Christ’s church exists as a result of the Holy Spirit working in the lives of men and women. The Holy Spirit was poured out on the apostles and they became unstoppable in their witness for Jesus Christ (Acts 2:1-47). The work of the Holy Spirit was so powerful in the lives of the apostles that they didn’t fear anyone or anything—not even their own death. When they were

threatened Peter said, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to Him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20). The Holy Spirit directed Peter’s mission to the Gentiles (Acts 10). The Holy Spirit directed Paul and Barnabas on their missionary journeys (Act 13:1-3). God uses Holy Spirit led people to accomplish His purposes on this earth! God always honors His children who are being led by His Spirit! If the Holy Spirit isn’t leading

the local church it is nothing more than a social club. “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16). The Holy Spirit gives Christians that inner knowledge that we are children of God. The Holy Spirit illuminates God’s Word to our spirit and mind; renewing our mind and bringing our will into God’s will for our life (Romans 12:1-2). Christians are to deny our sinful nature its desires, and allow

the Holy Spirit to teach us, and lead us in living a godly life that is pleasing to God (Galatians 5:13-26). The Holy Spirit puts godly attitudes, motives and thoughts into our minds, impressing upon us to keep ourselves from the sinful actions of pride, greed and immorality in this evil world. The Holy Spirit gives us the spiritual and physical power to take the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ into all the earth (Acts 1:7-8). When the Holy Spirit is controlling the lives of Christians we become an unstoppable force demonstrating God’s love to all humanity.

The saying “Garbage in, garbage out” is usually true. Christians cannot put sinful thoughts and motives into our mind and expect godly things to come from our life. Only Christians who saturate their mind with the Word of God know how to live for God. Christians must train our mind to react in our earthly circumstances just like Jesus Christ would. This can only happen when we allow God’s Holy Spirit to control our life—and that takes determination and commitment to our spiritual growth. Christians cannot live a perfect life in our earthly body, but Christians can eliminate much of our sinful attitudes, motives, thoughts, and actions if we get under the control of God’s Word. Only Christians who get their mind filled with the truth of God’s Word know how to keep our sinful nature under control and allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts and actions. It is impossible to live a godly life in this satanically controlled world without the leading of God’s Spirit—“The Spirit gives life, the sinful nature counts for nothing” (John 6:63). Being led by God’s Spirit, or our sinful nature, is a choice we make every day

by Bill Lavender CORCORAN, CA - Lakeland Dusters Aviation, Inc. is a different twist about ag aviation operations. Operating in the San Joaquin Valley, positioned in central California, is Lakeland Dusters’ home base, Corcoran, farming capital of California and quite possibly the world. Surrounded by rich vast farmlands for cotton, wheat, barley and safflower, along with many minor “truck farm crops” and speciality crops.

Lakeland Dusters roars with R1340s Dennis Bernsen prepares to take-off with 385 gallons at one of Lakeland's satellite strips. Note loader's dress attire, a must in California.

operating nine radial 600 horsepower Thrush aircraft. Like any ag pilot I wondered, why nine 600 Thrush? Why not turbines? Everyone else in the U.S. who could possibly justify a turbine was doing it, especially operators who had been using several radial powered ag planes. A good question to be answered. Well, as it turned out, there was good reason for this selection of powerplants by Lakeland. There was more to this operation than just operating nine 600 Thrush. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Charlie Jarvis, assistant general manager at Lakeland for the past 13 years. Dave Johnston, Johnston Aircraft Service, had already arranged for the visit

with Lakeland. I was to meet at lunchtime with Darrell Frey, general manager and part owner. Meanwhile, Charlie did an excellent job of unfolding the Lakeland story. Lakeland Aviation, Inc. was formed in 1947 by Von Glahn in Corcoran, California as an aircraft dealer. Lakeland Aviation evolved into an ag operation, Lakeland Dusters Aviation. It then went through the hands of several individual owners operating Stearmans advancing through Pawnees, Braves and finally the Ayres Thrush. In the early 60s, two farming operations bought the business, Hansen Ranches and Gilky Farms. Twenty years ago Darrell Frey (pronounced Fry) came on board as the general manager. With his chemical background and expertise for squeezing efficiency from an operation, Lakeland Dusters became a premier ag aviation operation in the San Joaquin Valley.

We factored your neighbor’s crop value into the chemistry.

The company operates from the Corcoran airport and six satellite strips. Lakeland owns the paved strip in Corcoran, but it is open to the public. The satellite strips are within a 20-mile

Right-sized droplets resist wind sheer for less risk of drift. Unlike ordinary drift retardants that were designed for ground application, Volare DC™ eliminates super-sized droplets that rupture from wind shear and micro particles that hang in the air. Instead, Volare DC creates “right-sized” droplets that drop to the crop and stay there. It’s an added dose of confidence and one less thing for you, and your neighbors, to worry about.

Flagger signals Lakeland pilot by flashing mirror. The device positioned in front of him is the weige that is rolled end over end in four feet increments.

working radius of the spraying operation. This allows Lakeland to be less than five miles of every job, most of the time less than three miles. The San Joaquin Valley grows just about every imaginable crop and Lakeland treats most of them. Their season is year round with only a slight let-up in December and January. January starts off with preplant herbicide applications, Treflan or Prowl for cotton ground. In February, fertilizer is applied to wheat, barley and small grains, followed by insecticide applications and 2,4-D work. As the season progresses into spring, Gramoxone is applied to pre-plant ground for cotton. Beginning in May through August are insecticide applications for seed alfalfa and cotton. This is mainly Comite, Monitor, Lannate, Dibrom, Meviphos, Cygon, Capture, and Javelin. By September through November, the season comes to the end of a year’s cycle with defoliation on cotton and desiccation on seed alfalfa. In December, there is fall seeding of wheat and barley and pre-plant Treflan applications on safflower. One might think coordinating six year-round pilots would be a problem. In the busier time of the season, Lakeland may call-in one or two, even three more pilots to catch them up with their work load. Generally, the six full-time pilots manage all of the flying. They do not work on the aircraft, nor load. Each of these pilots are long-time employees of Lakeland and it is no wonder. When one looks at the fields these pilots treat, a Georgia pilot

Darrell Frey and Charlie Jarvis stand inside the holding room for the wash-water recycling unit. would think he had died and gone to heaven. Of course, for many, the night flying spoils the perfect pilot seat. The pilots, by their request, keep an even keel on their annual pay. Whichever pilot is down on acreage becomes the pilot up for the next day. Each day this is computed from the work orders turned in by the pilots. This method of allocating work loads evenly distributes the gravy with the undesirable work. Although I personally didn’t see any fields I considered to be undesirable. If the pilot becomes overworked and needs time off, he can take it without worrying about getting behind on pay. As a matter-of-fact, each pilot has one mandatory week-end off

April 2013

a month, according to Frey. When the pilot does return to work, he is first man up until he catches the other pilots. Darrell told AgAir Update, at the end of the year each pilot’s salary would be within $1,000 of each other. It is Lakeland Dusters’ policy for all ag flights to be in formation pairs. Each round-robin (racetrack) turn spaces the back and forth tracks 1,320 feet apart. This is possible since all the fields are one mile square. The formation flying, one aircraft in a turn while the other crosses the field, greatly increases the efficiency of the flagging and loading operation, not to mention the safety factor. The company has four loading and flagging crews. The loading crew is made-up of a loader who is licensed by the state of California with a Qualified Applicator Certificate or “Silver” card, a loader-helper and a water truck driver. The flagging crew is comprised of a crew chief and six flaggers. The flaggers mark their swaths with a weige stick. This is a triangular device four feet wide at the bottom that is swapped end to end for the designated swath, 52 feet for wet work and 48 feet for dry applications. Although the swath may seem tight for most ag operators using Thrush aircraft, Lakeland has found with infrared detection this is the swath that best suites their customers. Charlie Jarvis explained to AgAir Update how Lakeland had discovered if a pilot deviated off center-line during his spray pass, an aircraft taking the wider swaths would produce a jagged

Pilot Dennis Bernsen approaches flagger applying Prowl over cotton ground. Notice horizon in background, no trees, no obstacles, clear open runs.

edge. They also found that no two pilots determined the same center line. It depended on how and where the pilot was picking his line-up points. Also Lakeland’s largest customer, Boswell Farms, felt they got a better job with the 52-foot swath. All applications are made at five and ten-gallon rates. Low volume applications (below three gallons) are not permitted in California. Lakeland uses the Tee Jet nozzles manufactured by Spraying Systems. Darrell and Charlie explained their observations indicated improved drift control with the CP nozzle. Lakeland scheduled a swath analyses for their Thrush aircraft outfitted with CP nozzles the following week. They felt confident Lakeland Dusters would be switching all nine aircraft to CP nozzles before summer.

When questioned about scheduling, Charlie explained as a courtesy to the city of Corcoran no take-offs from the Corcoran airstrip were made after 10:00 pm at night. The company would schedule the applications near Corcoran in the earlier part of the day and move to their satellite strips for the later night work. As a general rule, herbicides are applied during the day with better visibility and night applications are reserved for the insecticide treatments. As for the consideration given the town of Corcoran, Lakeland Dusters is probably one of the pioneer aerial application companies to participate in positive community relations, especially with the school system. Each Lakeland Duster aircraft has the Corcoran school mascot, the Panther, painted on the vertical tail and each water-boom truck has the Panther painted

Each Lakeland aircraft is blazoned with the Corcoran mascot, Panthers.

During Ag Air Update's visit, Darrell visited the school, along with other community leaders, teaching the students about business ethics. Aero Engine performs Lakeland Dusters’ engine overhauls. Lakeland, over the years, has developed a set of specs for their overhauls they believe has improved the reliability of the radial engine. They have also installed the Sky Tractor Oil Filter Conversion Kit on their Thrush. Charlie pointed to a 1,400 hour engine on the floor, “Bill, we just pulled this engine with 1,400 hours on it. It was running

fine. Normally we operate our engines 1,200 hours. But now we believe, because of the oil filter, we can extend our overhaul times. We will be watching this engine’s overhaul very carefully and make a decision whether to continue the hours-extension based on the outcome of the engine overhaul.” Lakeland does all of their maintenance with three mechanics on staff. Both Lionel Garza and Steven Carlson are IAs and Art Verduzco is working on his certification. Art also does all of the logo artwork on the aircraft and service trucks. The office is managed by Joyce Cavin doing the billing and secretarial duties. Steve White, a Lakeland employee since the

The majority of Lakeland chemicals are delivered in bulk quantities in closed systems. AgAir Update caught up with pilots, Dennis Bernsen and Carl Corwin, flying Prowl on cotton land. They were hauling 385-gallon loads with the extended-wing Thrush from a satellite strip less than a mile from the 640-acre section (less 40 acres for drainage ditches and roadways). The loads required three minutes to fill using 2-inch plumbing and were disconnected with dry breaks, although the load was topped with clean water.

Charlie commented the company was converting to 2 1/2-inch systems to expedite loading even more. AgAir Update witnessed the last load of 100 gallons of clean water being applied over the target field to flush the Thrush spray system. Average production with the Thrush is 250 acres per hour per aircraft. Back at the home base in Corcoran, a visitor might see a large area covered with black plastic. Underneath the black plastic is soil removed from an old abandoned dump pit, 6,000 yards worth! Lakeland is working at reclaiming the soil through bioremediation. The results have yet to be determined. Darrell stated, “Bill, the California Department of Water Quality has been more than fair working with us on this project. If this soil

AirTech

can’t be restored, Lakeland and probably every operator in the country has a problem.” Today, Lakeland captures all of its rinse water for their aircraft on a special design covered pad. This 60’x60' pad collects the water in a 100-gallon double-lined stainless steel sump. The material is then pumped into a secure building where it is processed in a 1,200-gallon tank with an ozonator, like you would find on a hot tub, but with a higher capacity. The water is circulated through a special filter that removes petroleum oils, then through three carbon filters that remove any remaining contaminants and is finally stored in a 3,000-gallon holding tank. The system is surrounded by a containment dike. The water in the holding tank is used to wash the aircraft. Due to the process of recycling, Lakeland periodically has to add water to the system, so there is never any water that leaves the system to enter the environment. Lakeland has developed cleaning methods that only require 12-15 gallons of recycled water to clean the Thrush or load trucks. Estimated cost of a system large enough to handle nine aircraft, $35,000. Darrell said the cost would be about the same for a one aircraft operation, as it was for their nine. With the combination of clearing the aircraft spray system over the target field and the wash water recycling system, Lakeland creates no hazardous waste. At lunch I asked Darrell Frey and Charlie Jarvis the big question, why isn’t Lakeland Dusters operating turbine aircraft. Darrell

He explained how Lakeland liked the versatility of several aircraft, reminding me of Lakeland’s policy of dual aircraft spray flights. "Okay", I said. "You could operate four turbines." Again, Darrell explained how Lakeland was self-insured and how hull insurance would be required on the new turbines. He went on to tell me because of the close proximity of their fields, the turbine’s speed would not be of any great advantage. He also said hopper size was a factor, with only a minimum benefit from one larger. What Darrell said made since, especially after witnessing their operation. It would be very hard for Lakeland Dusters to be much more efficient and remain cost effective at the same time. You can’t argue with more than 50 years of success.

MasterLock adjuvant optimizes crop protection applications ®

New adjuvant from WinField gets more spray into the canopy and on target to defend yields

SHOREVIEW, MN—Today’s farmers are constantly adapting their management practices to combat pests and get the maximum return from their fields. To help farmers enhance their disease and insect management programs, WinField developed MasterLock® adjuvant. “Combating yield-limiting pests involves more than just selecting the right crop protection product,” said Bruce Senst, director, Winfield Adjuvants. “In order to get the most from their crop protection investments, farmers need to ensure the products they select are reaching the areas pests attack.” New MasterLock® adjuvant

combines the proven deposition, canopy penetration and drift reduction of InterLock® adjuvant with new DropTight™ spreader-sticker technology. More of the spray gets into the crop canopy and stay put for optimized pesticide performance. MasterLock® works effectively with fungicides and insecticides and may be used with herbicides and other crop protection products. Simply put, MasterLock® adjuvant reduces the amount of fine particles that evaporate or drift away. That leaves more spray particles within the most effective size range for more consistent coverage and better canopy penetration. It can be used with both ground and aerial applications.

“Current management practices present a new wave of challenges for farmers,” said Senst. “For instance, planting continuous corn makes crops more susceptible to disease. Utilizing MasterLock® adjuvant to increase the efficacy of plant health products can help battle this issue. In addition to controlling spray drift, the adjuvant features DropTight™ technology that helps enhance droplet adhesion for less bounce and better droplet spreading. This means improved droplet coverage, more pesticide uptake and optimized control. Why do smart people do dumb things? by Guy Minor Have you ever noticed how we sometimes take a perverse pleasure in reading articles that detail aircraft accidents? That’s not terribly surprising; after all, an accident account is a cautionary tale complete with good guys and bad guys, tragedy and mayhem. You just can’t look away!

tragedy. The unfortunate pilot in the story somehow brought it on himself. He made a dumb move. He was somehow deficient in experience or intelligence. It feels so good to play the superior. It seems right to balance the scales of justice. There is a bad outcome; someone should pay the price.

Another guilty pleasure of accident reports is the ability to heave a sigh of relief because it wasn’t you and perhaps you convince yourself that it could never be you. Our natural tendency to make judgments helps insulate us from the

But is this attitude helpful in making sense of the situation? Before we start assigning blame, perhaps taking a closer look at the tangled relationship that exists between humans and errors can provide us better insight into the

“hows” and “whys” of an accident as well as help us understand the reasons behind our own aerial blunders. To be able to fully benefit from the lessons an error can teach, it is imperative to walk in the shoes of the person who made the mistake. Then ask yourself: “Why would an otherwise well meaning, bright individual make this mistake?”

to those that lead to errors. Success is the upside of having a brain, mistakes the downside. The problem is we often have no idea whether to call our actions success or failure until we observe their outcome and sometimes it is just too late. In considering error, it is useful to note that our brains have two functional modes: conscious workspace and long-term memory. If we encounter a problem we have never seen before, we use the conscious workspace to “noodle out” a solution. The conscious workspace operates in trial and error mode and it is easy to understand how the trial

If, on the other hand, we encounter a situation we have seen and solved in the past, we retrieve a program or skill from long-term memory to perform that task more quickly. These automatic routines guide much of our behavior because we are very comfortable working in mental autopilot mode. The error trap lurks, though, because if something changes about the context of the behavior during the running of a skill program, we need to alter the program to account for the change. These kinds of changes require us to exit autopilot mode, pay close attention, and then alter

and error mode might cause error. We try something. If it works, we call it success. If it does not work, we call it error.

the plan to accommodate the change. If we stay on mental autopilot or if we don’t focus properly on the change, we might simply miss the change and continue with the old behavior. The problem, of course, is that the old behavior may no longer be appropriate for a new situation. Result: error. Let’s look at a specific example. A man wakes up every morning, climbs into his car and drives to work. Every morning he takes the same freeway entrance ramp. Now it’s the weekend and his daughter asks him to drive her to a store located just beyond the familiar entrance ramp. As he approaches the ramp, he is deep in conversation. What does he do? He takes the entrance ramp. It is his habit. He doesn’t even notice until his daughter asks, “Where are you going?” Have you ever made a similar mistake? Perhaps you set your coffee mug on the top of your car and because it is not a common thing to do, it’s still there when you drive away. These are skill-based

errors. The way our brain processes routines pulled up from long term memory causes these errors.

Managing Mistakes Human error and human success come from the same psychological processes, so error in itself is not bad. It is the context in which we make the error that makes it so dangerous. Errors made in an unforgiving context like aviation can easily lead to disaster. We cannot change the penchant of people to make mistakes. We can however ask why the mistake occurred and determine how to address the cause in a systemic (not individual) way. We can structure and manage the system, so it is less likely to promote error, and so it will be more forgiving of error when it does occur. And we can look within ourselves. It is always smart to learn from your mistakes, but smart pilots prefer to learn from others’ mistakes. When reading those accident and incident accounts, though, avoid the smug and superior mindset we

so often tend to assume. Consider that the people who made those mistakes are people just like you — people who did not intend to do things that would cause an accident or incident. It’s tempting to characterize the person as silly, thoughtless, incompetent, or reckless, but anyone — in fact, everyone — can be adversely affected by a complex, confusing and stressful context. The remedy is to focus on the “why,” not on the “who.” The “why” question deals with influences, which gets to the systemic heart of the matter. And that’s when you truly learn why smart people can do dumb things and how you can avoid a similar situation. KAWAK Aviation earns STC for the new T3 throttle quadrant Bend, OR—The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) #SA02266SE to Kawak Aviation Technologies, Inc. for the development of its new T3 Throttle Quadrant for use on Air Tractors equipped with PT6 engines. A key design element of the T3 is Kawak’s “SafeLock” feature. SafeLock prevents un-commanded movement of the propeller lever when in feather, which can result in a potentially hazardous situation for the pilot, personnel and bystanders. The T3 Throttle Q u a d r a n t positively locks the propeller lever in feather and assures you will not fall victim to any uncommanded movement of the propeller lever. Giving you the confidence to know that your parked aircraft will stay parked. The T3 Throttle Quadrant features, canted levers to improve pilot ergonomics and reduce fatigue. Superior slide and gate design ensure ultimate safety and smooth operation. Kawak Aviation has also included multiple mounting provisions for an easy bolt in replacement on Air Tractor, Thrush, Dromader and Ag Cat turbine installations. Kawak Aviation Technologies, Inc. began as Ag-Air Systems in 1991. The company established itself as a market leading designer and manufacturer of fixed wing turbine propulsion systems and auxiliary hydraulic power for both fixed wing and rotor wing agricultural and utility aircraft.. Over the last two decades Kawak has become known as the premier supplier of high efficiency and reliable mission equipment for the aerial

firefighting, unmanned vehicle, and air cargo industries. Agricultural aviation however remains a primary focus of Kawak’s product development and overall business portfolio.

The eyes have it by Susan Parson, susan.parson@faa.gov Fit for Flight— Like any other aviator, I was eager to know how these procedures would impact FAA medical certification. Here’s the bottom line: The FAA allows most FDA-approved refractive procedures, including LASIK, PRK, and ICL for all classes of certification. The FAA accepts monovision after a six-month stabilization period and a successful medical flight test. Now for the details.—The FAA requires that civil airmen with refractive surgical procedures (e.g., PRK, LASIK) discontinue flying until the eye care specialist has determined adequate healing, with stable vision and no significant adverse effects or complications. For most FAA-allowed refractive procedures, you may resume exercising privileges on your current medical certificate under 14 CFR section 61.53 as

soon as your eye care provider releases you to resume normal activities, and when your visual acuity meets the standard for the class of medical you hold. The FAA does require your eye care provider to complete a report of eye evaluation (FAA Form 8500-7), which you need to present to your aviation medical examiner (AME) at the time of your next scheduled FAA medical examination. This report must verify complete healing, stabilization of visual acuity, no complications, and lack of significant residual effects that may accompany these types of surgical procedures (e.g., night glare, vision haziness, or eye discomfort). Sufficient healing typically occurs by six weeks, but up to a year or longer may be necessary in some cases. At the time of your next scheduled medical application, your AME may issue the appropriate medical certificate if you are found to be otherwise qualified. You may also submit this report directly to the FAA’s Office of

Aerospace Medicine. In addition to including specific data on your condition, it should also state that: The airman meets the visual acuity standards and the report of eye evaluation indicates healing is complete, visual acuity remains stable, and the applicant does not suffer sequela, such as glare intolerance, halos, rings, impaired night vision, or any other complications. There are a few more steps to take if you opt for monovision, since this procedure results in a monocular vision condition for purposes of FAA medical regulations. In other words, you do not meet the 14 CFR section 67.103, 67.203, and 67.303 requirements for near and distant vision with each eye separately. To regain medical certification after a surgical procedure, the FAA requires a six-month adaptation period. If you want to fly during this sixmonth interval, you must wear eyeglasses or contact lenses that correct you to meet the vision standard in each eye. Your medical certificate will state this limitation. (Note: The FAA does not permit use of monovision contact lenses (wearing one lens to correct for distance and one to correct for near vision) .

professional or aspiring professional pilot — should make without thorough consultation with a qualified eye care professional and serious consideration of the potential risks and inevitable tradeoffs. Although the FAA and most major air carriers allow laser refractive surgery, professional aviators must consider how it could affect their occupational and certification status. As with any invasive procedure, you should understand both the risks and the benefits before electing to go forward. But if you do … enjoy the view! Susan Parson is editor of FAA Safety Briefing. She is an active general aviation pilot and flight instructor.

In order to have this limitation removed at the end of the minimum six-month adaptation period, you need to ask the FAA Aerospace Medical Certification Division to authorize a medical flight test with your local flight standards district office (FSDO). Successful completion of the medical flight test will result in the issuance of a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) that removes the corrective lens limitation from your certificate. New Perspectives—There’s no question that I am now in the “I love laser eye correction” group. But I’d also be the first to stress that refractive eye surgery is not a decision that any pilot — especially a

better. He’ll apply the same pressure to another operator.

in reality, for multiple reasons, he was scared to fly.

In the military, student pilots and full grown aviators were told if for any reason you did not want to fly, no problem. There were any number of reasons you may elect not to fly: not feeling well, personal or financial problems hanging heavy on your mind, etc. Subconsciously, these things take up space of the hard drive of your brain, and may slow your reaction time down. The same principle applies to some Part 135 Air Medical operators as well.

This pilot was due for his annual flight physical during the middle of the season. So, I called the AME and told him what was happening. The doc told me that he would “feel him out” and take care of the situation. The AME ended up grounding the pilot. When the pilot returned to the airport, he tried, but could not hide his delight for being grounded. He stayed with me for the rest of the season loading the airplanes and other miscellaneous work.

Moral of the story is this: Do not let a farmer, another pilot or yourself intimidate you into flying when that quiet, little voice inside is telling you to do otherwise. In My Opinion, if you do have a good, reliable and conscientious pilot who may have something bugging him to the point that he needs to take a break, let him take it. That will be a lot better than having him roll the airplane up in a ball, or worse. And so as per usual, be safe, have fun, and make money.

Now, on the other side of that coin, you had better not abuse the privilege. When I had my flying service in the hills of Mississippi, I had this type of safety culture and “no questions asked offer” with my pilots. On occasion, a pilot would take me up on it. However, I did have a pilot who was always looking for some reason not to fly. After a few times of bailing out, it became clear to me that

Check your billing system. Are you making a PROFIT? Due to tax law changes, escalating fuel prices, the financial uncertainties with the economy, and other price increases likely to occur this year, now is the time to check your billing system. Make sure your billings are producing a profit. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until your checkbook has a negative balance to investigate what happened to your business.

Does the way you charge produce a profit? Making a profit requires the total billings to be greater than all the fixed expenses plus the variable expenses

created by the hourly operation of the aircraft. The fixed costs required to conduct any type flying service are significant. Aircraft, insurance, personnel, finance cost, depreciation, and support facilities represent a large investment. These entry costs are known but will vary with each aircraft so it is necessary to financially analyze the specific fixed costs of each aircraft and allocate a portion of the general

expenses between the different aircraft in the operation. The variable operating costs of each aircraft must also be analyzed. Each time an aircraft flies to a maintenance facility, maintenance test flight, positioning, training, etc., the hourly expenses must be paid. The hourly expenses created from these type flights must be accounted for in the billing system.

Combining the fixed and variable costs determines the total hourly operating cost. The biggest factor influencing total hourly operating cost is the annual hourly utilization. Spreading the annual fixed costs over more flight hours reduces the total hourly operating cost. Theoretically, each aircraft has a different total hourly operating cost and therefore a different price the operator must charge in order to produce the same percentage profit per

flying hour. Practically speaking, each aircraft model has an hourly charge rate determined by the marketplace. Assuming you collect the hourly charge rate determined by the marketplace, your financial plan should answer two questions. 1) What annual hourly utilization is required to break even on each aircraft? 2) What annual hourly utilization is required to produce the ROI (Return On Investment) you desire for each aircraft? After answering these

two questions, you know the annual utilization required to break even and to produce the ROI you desire at the market hourly rate. If these annual utilizations are not achievable, then additional financial planning is required.

It’s time to expect more from an aviation insurance broker. A lot more. Many insurance buyers don’t realize just how much they could be getting from a broker—and how much

Calculating your ROI requires projecting cash flow from the time you purchased the aircraft through the time you sell or trade the aircraft. I suggest using a five-year period for your projection and estimating the aircraft resale value at the end of the five-year period. There are many ways to charge for aviation services. Possibilities include: $/Statute Mile, $/Nautical Mile, $/Take Off, $/Landing, $/Day, $/Elapsed Time, $/Flying Hour, $/ seat, $/Trip, $/excursion, $ for positioning, $/Statute Mile or Nautical Mile for deadhead, $/acre, $/pound, $ for excess ferry distance, $ charge for small patches, $ charge for spot treatment, $/load, $/Flying Hour fuel surcharge, etc. Charges may differ depending on the type terrain, weather, day, night, or other special conditions as well as the type aviation service: aircraft charters, air ambulance, sightseeing tours, fire fighters, freighters, agricultural operators, etc. The type operation usually dictates the conventional method of billing. Regardless of the billing method used, the end result must produce revenue greater than expenses in order to stay in business. To improve your profit, you should cost out each job. Determine which jobs produce profits and which jobs produce losses. At the completion of each job, divide the revenue received by the hours flown. If the revenue per hour collected is not greater than your average cost per hour then you need to evaluate the billing system for your services. By immediately costing out each job, you will quickly determine a profitable billing system. Important: Don’t let the recent rise in fuel costs turn your business into a loser. Implement a fuel surcharge to preserve your profit. Calculating the profitability of the cash flow produced from an aircraft investment is time consuming. AircraftCostAnalysis performs these essential investment calculations while saving you time and effort. Details and sample reports are available at www.AircraftCostAnalysis.com.

A representative from the operator reported that the pilot was conducting agricultural spray operations when he experienced a flight control anomaly that resulted in an uncommanded roll to the right. The helicopter continued in a right descending turn and subsequently impacted terrain. The pilot sustained serious injuries during the accident sequence and was transported to a nearby hospital.

NTSB Identification: *CEN13LA152* Date: January 31, 2013 Location: Victoria, TX Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-401 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On January 31, 2012, about 0845 central standard time, an Air Tractor Inc., AT-401 airplane impacted trees and terrain during a forced landing following an in-flight loss of engine power while en-route near Victoria, Texas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane sustained substantial wing damaged. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot, under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137, as an agricultural application flight. Day visual flight rules (VFR) conditions prevailed for the flight, which did not operate on a VFR flight plan. The local flight originated from a private airstrip near Victoria, Texas, about 0835.

The pilot reported that he experienced a loss of engine power about eight to ten minutes into the flight. He tried various magneto switch positions and checked the magnetos where that troubleshooting did not return the lost engine power. The engine power loss worsened and the pilot executed a forced landing “in trees on flat terrain.” The pilot reported that the left wing was damaged and the right wing sustained “moderate” damage.

NTSB Identification: *WPR13CA120* Date: February 10, 2013 Location: Shandon, CA Aircraft: BELL 206B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he intended to spray an agricultural field and was maneuvering in preparation for his first pass when the helicopter lost engine power. The pilot subsequently accomplished a forced landing to an open field. During the landing sequence, the helicopter’s main rotor blades flexed down and made contact with the tailboom, which resulted in substantial damage to the tailboom assembly. The pilot reported that after the landing he discovered the fuel selector valve in the off position. He reported that he had turned the fuel selector valve to the off position to drain the fuel sump during the preflight; however, failed to re-open the valve after the preflight and prior to takeoff.

On February 18, 2013, about 1430 Pacific standard time, a Bell 206B collided with power transmission lines near Eureka, Nevada. The commercial pilot sustained fatal injuries; the helicopter was destroyed during the accident sequence. The flight departed from a temporary loading area adjacent to the accident site, at 1422. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The helicopter was utilized for a rehabilitation project on BLM land in the Pinto Creek Ranch area, about 12 miles southeast of Eureka. The area had sustained previous fire damage, and the accident flight was part of a series intended to disperse seeds in the affected area. The pilot performed multiple uneventful seed-dispersal runs throughout the morning, utilizing a spreader attached to the bottom of the helicopter. After lunch, he performed more drops, however, after departing for the last drop of the day, he did not return. A search was initiated, and at 1500 the helicopter wreckage was located. The entire helicopter, with the exception of the main rotor blades, was located about 150 feet north of a set of power transmission

lines. The lines traversed from east to west, and consisted of three sets of horizontally positioned tandem power cables. Above the power lines were two static lines; the southern static line was severed, and had become draped over the power lines. The helicopter sustained crush damage from the nose through to the aft bulkhead, and the tailboom had become severed just forward of the horizontal stabilizer. Both main rotor blades came to rest midway between the power lines and helicopter, and remained attached to each other at the seesaw hinge. The spreader was 1/2 full with seeds, and was located about 10 feet away from the helicopter.

Thrush 510G awarded type certification in Argentina First certification in South America heralds more the come Albany, GA–Thrush Aircraft announced this week that the Argentinian aviation authority (ANAC) has granted type certification for the new GE-powered Thrush 510G for operations there. This is the first certification for the new airplane in South America, and several more countries in the southern hemisphere are expected to quickly follow suit. The 510G was FAA-certified in October, 2012 and has rapidly gained an enthusiastic following – as the GE H-80 engine, combined with the rugged Thrush 510 airframe, is proving to be a extremely effective combination for operators in a wide variety of environments. The Thrush 510G has a hopper capacity of 510 gallons and a gross weight of 10,500 pounds. In addition, the 510G is over 200 pounds lighter than its sister ship – the legendary Thrush 510P. The 510G also carries a new fuel pump system and a new

Aluminum Strainer

solid state GCU electrical system as well. With GE’s new H80 engine up front, the 510G is expected to bring a higher level of performance to agricultural operations – from enhanced hot and high capabilities, to higher cruise speeds, improved reliability, and increased fuel efficiency over other aircraft in the category. Thrush currently has several Pratt & Whitney-powered 510P’s operating in Argentina, and the newly certified 510G will add significantly to the company’s presence there. Payne Hughes, president of Thrush Aircraft said: “The pilots and operators in Argentina are very important to us, and having the 510G certified in- country, gives them an even wider choice of aircraft to suit the missions that are unique to their region.” The first 510G destined for Argentina was delivered in December, and has been awaiting completion of certification activities prior to getting down to work. Now, with the new certificate in hand, the new 510G is expected to draw significant interest from local operators thanks to excellent initial reviews by both pilots and crews there.

CanAAA education fund takes off Calgary—An education fund for a little girl who lost her dad in an airplane crash early this month has grown by nearly $40,000 thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association (CAAA).

Darren Spence, two of his sons and a young friend were killed in a plane crash near Waskada, Manitoba in February. Darren was a member of the Board of Directors of the CAAA and the group decided to do something to boost an education fund for his surviving daughter Kaylie. The CAAA holds a fundraiser auction as part of its annual convention which was held in Calgary February 21-23. The auction is the major fundraiser for the association which is managed from an office in Edmonton. One of the items auctioned annually is the Legacy Bottle, a large bottle of spirits that doesn’t get opened but goes from province to province in a friendly competition between provincial organizations. This year, the Board of Directors decided to donate the proceeds from the auction of the Legacy Bottle to an education fund that has been established for Kaylie Spence. It was the final item at this year’s auction and sold to a Manitoba consortium for $20,150. Steve Kiansky handled the bidding for the Manitoba group and was a close friend of Darren Spence. “I knew that we were not going to let the bottle go anyplace but Manitoba,” said Kiansky after the auction, “but the support for the fund was overwhelming. It was an honor for me to do the bidding on behalf of the group.” After the sale Saskatchewan and Alberta bidding groups announced that they to would donate the money that members had committed to the bidding, just over $9,000 for Saskatchewan and nearly $8,000 from Alberta. Jill Lane, Executive Director of the CAAA, says the auction was not the end. “We have members who contributed following the auction and some who said they would be donating to the fund when they returned home, we are confident the total amount will be near $40,000.” Wayne Kauenhofen, auctioneer for the sale, says he has not seen anything like it before. “I have done a lot of auctions but to be a part of an event that helps a little girl is just a great feeling. So many of us are parents and know the feelings the family must be going through at this time. It was great just to be able to help in some way.” The fund will be administered by Deb Spence, Darren’s sister and is designated for Kaylie’s post secondary education. Additional contributions to the fund can be made to the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association until March 31, 2013.
