Air Tractor president, Jim Hirsh, and I discuss upcoming ag-aircraft.
Why is Mississippi a safe state? As ag-pilots prepare for another season north of the equator and those south of it look forward to a much needed rest, AgAir Update readers will find the April issue a refreshing read. The cover story is about the AT-504 and the success it is enjoying; not only as a fantastic training tool, but as a comparable workhorse to its sister ship, the AT-502. Spanning from Canada to Arizona to Brazil, the AT-504 is realizing acceptance worldwide with models being delivered as far as into China and Australia.
line to toe and the true professional ag-pilot can do it. From my experiences, I have found a few traits that define that ability: the first turn of the day is very much like the last one, knowing when to take a break from flying, get plenty of rest and eat a proper diet, recognize the infamous “chain of events” leading to an incident, put enough fuel in the aircraft and the list goes on. Those in the northern hemisphere have an opportunity to make this the safest season yet, hopefully with zero fatalities and a minimum of incidents.
Thrush Aircraft continues to bring our industry new and innovative products. In this month’s issue, you will read about Thrush Aircraft’s announcement of its Switchback 510G Thrush. This aircraft has the Transland fire gate installed with quick removal features. Thrush is teasing us with limited information as of today, however, AgAir Update has been invited to make an evaluation flight that I am sure you will be reading about very soon. Thrush also recently obtained Canadian certification for its single and dual cockpit 510G aircraft (GE H80 powered). You can read about it also in this edition of AgAir Update.
I am going to pose a question that should make you stop and think. At the beginning of the year, AgAir Update writes a summary of accidents from the previous year based on NTSB reports. For the last couple of years, maybe more, Mississippi has led the U.S. with the lowest number of reported accidents. Why is Mississippi a safe state? In 2013, there were none as report on the NTSB web site in January of this year (A recent check on the NTSB web site reveal in fact there was one accident in October in Mississippi). This is understandable for a state like Wyoming where there are not as many ag aircraft. However, Mississippi ag-pilots log a significant number of hours. I believe praise should be given where due and Mississippi ag-pilots deserve the recognition. I challenge all states to match Mississippi ag-pilots’ safety record - this year is as good a year as any!
During the last days of January, I traveled to South Africa and was hosted by Ret Orsmond for a whirlwind, week-long excursion. South Africa is a beautiful and interesting country with only about 25 ag operators and 100 ag-planes; Orsmond Aviation owns 30 of those! I visited several operators, enjoyed great meals, hospitality and seeing the sights. I am in the midst of writing about that trip, dividing it into several parts as an AgAir Update Excursion in South Africa. The first installation of this series of articles can be read in this issue. It never hurts to remind ag-pilots of their responsibility to fly safe, while at the same time be profitable. That’s a very fine

Air Tractor’s AT-504 earns its place in the ag plane fleet Piston aircraft pilots and aerial application owners are looking for a practical and affordable path into turbine engine aircraft. The Air Tractor AT-504 offers one way to bridge the piston-to-turbine gap, providing the vehicle to begin bringing new pilots into the business in a way where they can learn while they earn their keep. The logic behind the 504’s reason for being is gaining traction among more and more forward-looking ag operators.
The AT-504 As Trainer Fran de Kock, owner of Battlefords Airspray in Saskatchewan Canada, comes at the new pilot challenge as a flight instructor and aerial applicator. Fran not only holds his commercial license with instructor and instrument ratings, he is also a board member in the CAIR Self Insurance Program. He has been turning out ag pilots from his Professional Agricultural Pilot Training Program since 2000. Having instructed for many years in a tandem seat PA25 and with the Gippsland GA200 ag trainer, which has side-by-side seating, Fran is convinced there’s no better cockpit configuration than side-by-side seating. Battlefords Airspray has, in fact, two AT-504 aircraft with which Fran has begun a new turbine transition training
program. “It’s reality training at its very best.” The AT-504 aircraft are outfitted as fully operational spray planes – equipped with Hemisphere GPS, flow controls, booms and nozzles, etc. When 504s aren’t being used for training, they’re part of Fran’s working fleet. He points out, “The 504 works at the same speeds, hauling the same loads as the 502.” In 2013 Fran instructed a low-time piston engine student who came to Battlefords with no prior spraying experience. He took Fran’s initial ag pilot course, then completed 25 hours of instruction in the AT-504. He was later hired and flew 200 hours last season in an AT-402. “Without the training in the AT-504, that exercise just wouldn’t have hardly been feasible for that guy,” Fran says. “The communication advantage [of sideby-side seating] is the big thing,” Fran points out. “You can feel the student’s reaction and see their face. When they’re in a situation that might become dangerous, you can be ready to react at the right moment. You’re right beside him. Engine management… you can put your finger on the gauge and say ‘Hey, watch the torque. Notice what the NG is.’ You can physically tap the gauge and draw their attention to it.”
“Communication with side-by-side seating is the big thing. You can feel the student’s reaction and see their face. You can be ready to react at the right moment if it’s necessary.” – Fran de Kock
Having flown 13 seasons in an Air Tractor AT-502B, Fran was a bit apprehensive changing to the AT-504 for spraying. But he was pleasantly surprised by how quickly he adjusted to the two-seat cockpit. “We placed the GPS and light bar directly in front of the left pilot seat. This proved to be the perfect configuration for spraying. After flying the 504 about 30 hours, I’m as comfortable in it as I am in the AT-502B.”
After flying the 504 about 30 hours, I’m as comfortable in it as I am in the AT-502B. I flew all season with 502s, and as advertised, the 504 is an AT-502 with two seats. — Fran de Kock

Earnin’ While He’s Learnin’ Grace under fire is SOP for Bill Dare of Twin Eagles Aviation in Mohave Valley Arizona. The decorated Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient flew and commanded Huey helicopter combat missions during his hitch in the Army. “We took ground fire all the time. You get used to it,” Bill says with a cool smile. He came away from that experience with a few scars and an exquisitely refined outlook on risk management. Now Dare is bringing his grandson into his business as a brand new ag pilot, and believes he’s stacking the odds in his favor with the AT-504. By Bill’s calculations, it makes more sense to start his grandson Jake in the 504 and skip the piston ag plane training phase altogether. “Having trained other pilots, when they first take off you gotta cross your fingers and hope they make it,” Bill says. “But with the 504, you can have an instructor in there until you’re ready to release the new guy. When you put a pencil to everything, add in the safety factor, in my book it’s better to go ahead and buy the 504 than to put Jake into an older piston airplane and worry about the chance of an accident because it’s an old airplane.” Ag pilot and instructor Randy Hansen is Dare’s primary pilot. When Jake got his commercial license, he and Randy hopped into the AT-504 for turbine engine flight training. Hansen instructs from the right seat as Jake flies spray jobs. “It’s a wonderful flying airplane,” says Hansen. “It reminds me a lot of the 502; there’s very little difference. It’s light on the controls, and even with two side-by-side seats, everything is within easy reach. As an instructor, I can see everything that’s going on.”
L-R: Grandson Jake Dare, ag pilot/instructor Randy Hansen, Granddad Bill Dare -- Bringing up a new generation of ag pilots with the AT-504.
Bill contends the 504 isn’t just a training expenditure. It’s bringing in revenue as Jake gets his training. “As far as carrying the load and getting out and doing the work, it does an excellent job. It’s probably the most productive training aircraft I’ve ever seen. And safety-wise, it’s so much better than a tandem seat airplane.”
about 5,000 hectares (12,300 acres) per week during peak season. Buying the AT-504 boosts his spraying capacity about 30 percent. Manoel Fenner has his sights set on moving into more turbine aircraft. But he needs more turbine engine-qualified pilots. And that’s where the AT-504 and training program come into the picture.
Man With A Plan About 5,700 miles south of Bill Dare’s Mohave Valley operation, in Nova Ponte Brazil, Manoel Francisco Fenner de Souza has put his company, Fenner Aviação Agricola Ltda., on a path to an allturbine aircraft fleet. Two key elements of his plan are his recently delivered AT504, and a turbine transition training program developed in partnership with Air Tractor dealers DP Aviação and Frost Flying Inc. Working with an Ipanema 201-A, Brave 300, Cessna AGwagon, and AT-502B, Fenner’s four pilots typically cover

While the turbine transition program is being developed, the AT-504 is already working along with the rest of the fleet. It has accumulated a little over 150 hours flight time since its delivery in December 2013. Most of the 504’s work consists of spraying corn and cotton crops. flight training in the AT-504. “The instruction will be done at Nova Ponte, in the state of Minas Gerais, at the airport where Fenner’s operation is based.” According to Diego, it’s a perfect location for an ag flight school. There are aircraft support facilities, hangars and training classrooms. There’s no airport control tower and almost zero traffic. The 4,900-foot asphalt runway is more than adequate. And the airport is surrounded by open farmland. The turbine transition training is expected to begin in May or June 2014. Fenner is enthusiastic about the AT-504 and what it promises for his business. “The AT-504 is the hub of our turbine transition training program and a big part of our plans for growth. It is an ideal platform for training pilots in a safe manner.”

Closing the gap Shaun Kinniburgh, of Kinniburgh Spray Service in Taber Alberta, echoes Señor Fenner’s sentiments. It’s all about improving efficiency and propelling business growth. “We got the 504 for future expansion of our turbine aircraft fleet. The 504 closes the gap in the transition from piston to turbine. With it we can gradually move pilots up into the turbine a lot easier – or start them off in a turbine.”
Turbine Transition Training Air Tractor 504
“Fran de Kock came down last summer to help us with his 504. We saw what it will do: everything a 502 can do. So I thought, ‘Why not bring that asset into my business, too?’” Taking his lead from Fran’s ag pilot training operation, Shaun says that he intends to develop a training syllabus for his own pilots. “We’re going to do annual check rides and go through standard operating procedures to make sure everybody is doing things pretty much the same.” Kinniburgh still gives a nod to Battlefords Airspray for its world-class ag pilot training and turbine transition programs. “Fran’s got a good thing going there. Even with this 504, I will still be sending new pilots to him for a transition course.”

With the help of a spectacular host, Orsmond Aviation, I was able to visit with numerous South African ag-operators during the course of a week, as well as spend a jet lag recoup weekend in Bethlehem and a midweek rest day in Plettenberg Bay with Ret and Julie Orsmond. After a 15-hour non-stop flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg, Orsmond Aviation employees, Michael Posthumus and Bernhard Seyfferdt met me at the airport to drive me to my first stop of the trip, Johnie Smith’s Lugbespuiting, (Afrikaans for “Crop Spraying”). On the roadside, near Frankfort, Michael and Bernard
swapped off for my new driver, Theunis Corver. We traveled a short distance to where we were greeted at Johnie’s home for a braai, another Afrikaans word for a South African barbecue. Here, I met Johnie’s wife and family, along with friends. Of course, we talked about agaviation and enjoyed a fabulous meal. Afterwards, Johnie instructed Theunis to drive me to a local safaris-style bed and breakfast hotel aptly called “Siesta Guesthouse”. Unknown to me at the time, as our arrival was in the darkness, the hotel is a lion compound where the animals roam freely outside the fenced area for sleeping quarters! Johnie Smith formed Johnie Smith Lugbespuiting in 1995 with one Cessna

Even with the high density altitude, the AT-502s are operated at 1200 ft/lbs of torque and 2,000 RPM which gives them about a 240 KPH airspeed loaded (150 MPH). The Air Tractors were delivered outfitted with CP Products nozzles while the Cessnas with standard hydraulic T-jets.
Johnie Smith and I complete a local flight in Johnie’s PA-12 that he has owned since childhood.
Ag-Wagon. The base operation is in Frankfort, Eastern Free State at 5,200 MSL. The company now uses two AT-502s with PT6A-34AGs and one Cessna Ag-Wagon and one Cessna AgTruck, both with Bonair IO-550 conversions. Four pilots, including Johnie Smith, are employed. In Frankfort, there is very little humidity that practically goes away at 22°C (72°F), causing spraying operations to stop at 2223°C. Because of this, the flying day at Johnie Smith’s starts at 4:30 a.m. and typically stops by 10 a.m. Sometimes a load or two can be made at dusk, and if cloudy, the spray day can be extended.
With an average farm size of 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres), for the 50-80 grower customers Johnie Smith Lugbespuiting has, most applications are made at 30-40 liters per hectare (3-4 GPA). The season begins in September with herbicide applications on wheat. Later in the season, fungicides are applied and when needed, insecticides (pyrethroids for aphids) are included. As the season progresses, other crops are treated. The flying is made up of maize (corn) 60%, soybeans 25%, potatoes and sunflower 15%. Up to six trips can be made over the potatoes, depending on rainfall during the growing season. All of the crops usually receive at least one ground application made by the farmer at the beginning of the season, unless it is too wet or the farmer is too busy planting. During the growing season for maize, typically one application of dry urea fertilizer is made at 50-80 kg/ha (50-80 lbs/ac). The fertilizer is delivered in 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) sacks or 50-kilogram bags stacked inside a 500-kilogram sack. The fertilizer is augured into the aircraft.

Each aircraft has a mobile unit, Jerrycar, assigned to it. The unit has a fuel capacity of 1,100 liters (290 gallons). There is a team of two loaders and one pilot. The aircraft is loaded using a 3” load hose. Water is available at the airstrips. During the South African summer, Johnie Smith operates from eight air strips in the Frankfort area. He also has an additional eight strips near Mpumalanga, a province to the northeast. If a ferry is over five miles from one of these strips, a ferry fee is added to the invoice. The season in Free State and Mpumalanga comes to an end in March with late herbicide applications of 2,4-D on maize.

To finish off the day before heading for Bethlehem, Johnie and I took the PA-12 he has owned since his youth for an hour flight to view the countryside. I hadn’t lost my touch on landing from the days when I owned a J-5, the precursor for the PA-12. Theunis and I wished Johnie Smith farewell, thanking him for a Johnie Smith Lugbespuiting shirt that I know I will enjoy explaining to friends what the word means! It was only a few hours drive south to Bethlehem where Orsmond Aviation is based. Its owner and founder, Ret Orsmond greeted us upon arrival and quickly loaded me up in his car for the short drive to nearby Clarens, where Ret and Julie, his wife, lived.

April and May are off time and when 100-hour and annual inspections of the aircraft are done, as well as maintenance on ground support equipment. South African ag-operators are required to follow the TBO of the engine manufacturer. June through September are the winter months and the spraying season moves south to the Overberg in the Western Cape area. Mainly firefighting and small grain applications are made during this time.
Ret and I have a bit of history. I had visited him in South Africa 18 years before and he “tolerated” a family Thanksgiving at my house. We even made a trip once to Cuba with two other ag-pilots. It was good to catch up and enjoy a whisky (Famous Grouse scotch) by the pool. By now, the jet lag was really working on me (or was it the whisky), so off to an early bed Saturday night. Tomorrow promised to be a day of relaxation and visiting with the Orsmond family. Next month, Part 2 of AgAir Update’s South African Excursion continues with what I learned over the weekend about the Orsmond legacy that once operated 54 ag aircraft, now down to 30, and continues into the week with the first stop on Monday at Steve Bolt’s Aerial Farming Service in Winterton KwaZulu, South Africa.

Thrush 510G certified in Canada Albany, GA – Thrush Aircraft announced this week that Transport Canada, the Canadian civil aviation authority, has issued full type certification for the new Thrush 510G, which is powered by the new GE H80 turboprop engine. This latest approval comes hot on the heels of certification of the aircraft in Argentina and Brazil last year, and serves as an excellent indicator of the airplane’s amazing market reception following its initial certification in the United States by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in October 2012.
“Our Canadian customers have been very anxious to put the 510G to work over Canada’s farm fields as soon as possible” said Payne Hughes, president of Thrush Aircraft, “and the folks at Transport Canada have been simply great to work with in helping that happen as soon as it could” he continued. “They have also been extremely thorough in their evaluation process, and I’m very proud to have our airplanes carry their seal of approval.” The Thrush 510G was launched in the U.S. with a record-setting ceremony following FAA certification – during which time no less than five aircraft were delivered to their new owners on the very same day – as following initial flight tests, news of the aircraft’s amazing capabilities spread quickly in the agricultural aviation community. Since those first five deliveries, demand for the 510G has continued unabated
The Canadian certification process began some thirteen months ago, shortly after FAA certification was received, and it was concluded this week at Transport Canada’s offices in Ottawa to an enthusiastic reception. The certification includes both the single and the dualcockpit versions of the Thrush 510G.
and, last year, Thrush quickly sold out of its entire year’s production of the 510G, making it one of the most successful new product introductions in the history of the company. The dual-cockpit version of the 510G was next to be built, and it was awarded FAA certification in July of 2013. The specifications and flight characteristics of the dual cockpit 510G are virtually identical to the single-cockpit version – but it has the added ability to carry up to 200 lbs. of cargo, equipment, or even an additional pilot or observer in the rear seat. The aft cockpit of the dual cockpit 510G can be equipped with full flight controls and avionics, as well. Thrush sales in Canada are overseen by their dealer, Yorkton Aircraft in Saskatchewan. Agtelligent to introduce remote management software Oakland, Iowa - Mixmate’s family-owned parent company, Agtelligent, is preparing to introduce innovative management software that allows users to track assets from the office while exchanging information directly with Mixmate in the field via wireless connection. This unique web portal can be accessed by desktop, laptop or mobile device and not only simplifies farm data transfers by tracking every ounce of chemical used, but also generates reports that are automatically emailed to growers and landowners notifying them when jobs are completed. The Mixmate remote management software is cloud based and designed to manage multiple Mixmate units. In addition to wireless data transfer, users can login and access data with permissions relevant to their assigned tasks as well as have the option to select preloaded jobs allowing operators to quickly switch gears on the go. Tasks and jobs automatically update once the Mixmate, which comes with a rugged Android tablet, syncs with the server making the chemical mixing and application process quicker and more efficient.
“Our job builder functionality helps prepare work orders in advance, while the remote management capabilities allow real-time reporting to be completed on the job,” said Doug Applegate. “Overall, the interface makes the lives of applicators and growers much easier when it comes to record keeping and farm management. Mixmate is a mobile blending system from Agtelligent LLC, a family business bringing precision agriculture equipment, ideas, and innovations to the market to automate and streamline farming processes. Designed to accurately and efficiently mix chemicals or fertilizers for field application, Mixmate is ushering in a new chapter in precision agriculture. More information about Mixmate is also available at www.mixmate. com. Is the customer always right? In your daily struggle to maintain and grow your business, and be a good salesman, it is very hard to say no to your farmer clients. But what happens when they ask you to do something that could be harmful to you?
If you do not know for sure what is in the container given to you, and rely totally on the word of your farmer client, you are exposing yourself to an increased chance of having a target crop and/or drift chemical claim.
We’re seeing increasing risks, and repercussions, when farmers bring their own crop protection products
We find that when it comes to chemical damage losses, they can stem from not mixing or applying the right chemicals
for aerial applicators to use. Packaging and labeling can be suspect or even nonexistent.

that the aerial applicator intended to spray. In other words, an applicator didn’t apply the product he thought he was applying. Many times, the root of this mistake can be traced to the chain of custody for the chemical product: who handled the materials that were being used? Was the labeling lost or missing? Was it packaged in the original container? Sometimes, people assume they have the correct product, and forget to double check. We want to trust our clients, but in the words of Ronald Reagan, “Trust, but verify.” Our word of caution, as you get ready for this coming season: please review your procedures for accepting crop protection products from people other than your own chemical dealers, and decide now how you will control and accept farmer-provided chemicals. Decide if you will accept them at all. Set guidelines that you and your staff can follow. Limit this risk. It could save you from dealing with a loss where you did everything right, except for trusting that the unmarked or premixed product given to you was actually what it was supposed to be. Blame and liability will fall on you, as the aerial applicator, even if the farmer made the mistake. You’ll find that the resulting fight to put blame where it belongs is much more difficult than just saying "no" on the front end of the transaction. Be safe, and best wishes on a successful spray season.

insights Standard of Care
Unmarked METs don’t meet this legal principle; as such the tower industry should beware by Andrew Moore NAAA Executive Director The legal term “standard of care” is one that has come up recently as it pertains to the aerial application industry. Before I provide an example, let’s review its legal definition. standard of care n: The watchfulness, attention, caution and prudence that a reasonable person in the circumstances would exercise. If a person’s actions do not meet this standard of care, then his/her acts fail to meet the duty of care which all people (supposedly) have toward others. Failure to meet the standard is negligence, and any damages resulting therefrom may be claimed in a lawsuit by the injured party. The problem is that the “standard” is often a subjective issue upon which reasonable people can differ. One example of how this principle relates to aerial applicators is its applicability to entities responsible for erecting unmarked towers in areas where lowlevel flying occurs. NAAA has conducted research identifying legal cases whereby defendants that did not properly follow an FAA Advisory Circular (AC) have been found negligent and liable for damages in accidents that could be tied to the defendant’s failure to heed such guidance. In those cases, the courts determined that Advisory Circulars serve as an established standard of care which people should have towards others.
B-4
agairupdate.com
As part of our continued efforts to ensure proper marking of towers under 200 feet, NAAA sent letters in January to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and dozens of U.S. meteorological evaluation tower (MET) manufacturers warning them that ignoring an FAA Advisory Circular (AC) providing guidance on the marking of METs and other government warnings on the risks posed by unmarked METs would very likely result in legal liability for a tower company whose tower resulted in an accident due to improper marking. The FAA amended Chapter 3 of its AC 70-7460-1 in 2011 to include marking METs under 200 feet in height and recommended the entire MET structure should be painted with alternate bands of aviation orange and white paint. In addition, the AC recommends that all markings should be replaced when faded or otherwise deteriorated. Additionally, the FAA advises that all METs should have high visibility sleeves installed on its outer guy wires and should have high visibility spherical markers (or cable) balls of aviation orange color attached to the guy wires. Another government action referenced in the letter establishing a standard of care that should be met in regard to marking METs was a spring 2013 National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issuance of six safety recommendations. Among these was a recommendation that the American Wind Energy Association revise its Wind Energy Siting Handbook
so as to include language informing the reader of the hazards posed by METs to low-level aviation and to encourage the voluntary marking of METs to increase visibility. There are also numerous state laws in existence requiring marking of METs and other ground-based obstacles.
Draft Letters Available from NAAA NAAA has made information related to tower entities’ potential liability for not abiding by the AC available to U.S. aerial applicators in the form of draft letters. These letters may be used to prompt those responsible for erecting unmarked towers in an applicator’s area to abide by FAA AC 70-7460-1 and existing state law. NAAA is also making a letter available for aerial applicators to use to thank entities responsible for properly marking towers for low-level aviators. To access these letters go to: www.agaviation.org/ content/letters-warning-met-entitiesabout-liability-not-marking-towers. We urge you to use this resource if you are subject to unmarked METs in your flying area. Draft language from these letters states that these government issuances on METs have: … created an adequate level of foreseeability so as to place a legal duty on the part of those installing these towers to mark all METs in accordance with the recommendations of both the NTSB and the FAA. Courts which have examined this issue find that Advisory Circulars represent
persuasive authority for exemplifying safety practices prevailing within an industry (see Muncie Aviation Corp. v. Party Doll Fleet, Inc. (5th Cir. 1975) 519 F.2d 117, Sierra Pacific Holdings Inc. v. County of Ventura 204 Cal.App.4th 509). These cases have shown that Advisory Circulars can be presented as evidence of the standard of care; and, given their status as a recommendation drafted by the FAA itself, they carry significant weight in determining liability and resultant damages.

The following is but one example of the many ways in which NAAA advocates
In the Muncie Aviation Corp. v. Party Doll Fleet, Inc. (5th Cir. 1975) 519 F.2d 117 the plaintiff in the case sued for damages caused by a collision with the defendant’s aircraft. The plaintiff’s complaint alleged the defendant failed “to follow standard landing traffic procedures at an uncontrolled airport.” (Id., at p. 1180). The defendant appealed contending that the trial court erred by permitting two FAA advisory circulars recommending landing procedures at these airports because they were merely advisory and without the force of law. The appellate court concluded the advisory circulars were admissible “to provide the jury with guidelines for determining what procedures were followed by pilots in the ordinary course of such landings and to assist the jury in measuring ordinary negligence … and the jury could permissibly infer that [the defendant] failed to meet the appropriate standard of due care.” (Id., at p. 1180).
We get it. You’re used to flying solo. But everyone knows you can’t do it alone. And neither can NAAA.
Membership matters. Join NAAA in its efforts to preserve and protect agricultural aviation and your way of life. Call (202) 546-5722 or visit www.agaviation.org to join the cause.
Because of this type of supportive case law establishing Advisory Circulars as a legal standard of care, NAAA feels safe in concluding, as we did in our membership ad2.indd 1

The resurrection of Jesus Christ “Brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to
the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). When Paul talks about the Scriptures he is talking about the Old Testament which has many word pictures of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Genesis 22 pictures Isaac as a type of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Abraham’s mind Isaac was dead the three days they traveled to the mountain. When God told Abraham to spare Isaac’s life and replace him with the lamb God provided, it was a picture of the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 11:19). The lamb that took Isaac’s place was a type of Jesus Christ dying as the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the world.

Psalm 16 says that Jesus Christ’s body would not see corruption, rise from the dead, and set at the right hand of God (Psalm 16:10-11). Psalm 22 tells us what Jesus would say on the Cross, how He would be mocked, that His hands and feet will be pierced, that none of His bones will be broken, and that they will cast lots for His clothing. Psalm 22 is a picture of a man being crucified on a Cross hundreds of years before the Roman government came up with this type of punishment. Isaiah 53 tells us of His suffering and dying for our sins and after Jesus Christ has suffered for the sins of the people He will rule with the mighty (Isaiah 53:11-12). Jesus said, “As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, so shall the Son of Man be in the earth.” Jonah was a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ dying and spending three days in the belly of the earth and rising again the third day to prove He had power over death and that He has satisfied God’s demand for the penalty of sin.
couldn’t steal Jesus’ body (Matthew 27:62-66). These guards would be put to death if anyone escaped their guard. The Jewish religious leaders and Roman government officials would have presented Jesus’ dead body if they could have and proved that the apostles were liars. But both Jewish and Roman historical written statements and traditions say that the tomb was empty. Positive evidence from a hostile source proves that the tomb was empty. If Jesus’ resurrection isn’t true, then the report of
women being the first witnesses would not have been allowed. Women had a low status, and were almost never allowed to testify about anything in those days. After the soldiers saw that the body of Jesus was missing, they told the leading priests what had happened. The priests bribed the soldiers to say that Jesus’ disciples had stolen the body of Jesus while they were sleeping, and they (the priests) would back up their story (Matthew 28:11-15). There is no way
All four gospels present the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and each gospel presents different details After the burial of Jesus Christ a stone was rolled over the entrance of the tomb, there was a seal put on it; the penalty for breaking that seal was death by crucifixion. Pilate sent a group of Roman soldiers (as many as 50), to secure the tomb so the disciples

these soldiers would have been sleeping because of the penalty of death! And even if they were sleeping, the rolling of a huge stone (over 1000 lbs.) from the entrance of the tomb would have woke them up. All four gospels present the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and each gospel presents different details, which together gives us a complete picture of this world changing event. No person in the history of mankind has influenced
the world as much as Jesus Christ. In fact, the eternal fate of this world and mankind rests upon Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus Christ was seen by Peter, then by the other twelve apostles. After that He was seen by over five hundred people at once, of whom the greater part were still
alive when Paul wrote this, but some had died. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me [Paul] also, as by one born out of due time (I Corinthians 15:5-8). There is overwhelming proof that Jesus Christ rose from the dead after three days and nights in the tomb. The apostles were beaten, threatened with death and eventually 11 of them died a martyr’s death and none of them ever recanted their story of Jesus Christ rising from the dead. The apostle John is the only one who died a natural death. Take away the resurrection of Jesus Christ and you eliminate the deity of Jesus Christ, salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, and eternal life in God’s heaven.
WITHOUT OUR ADJUVANTS, YOU’RE JUST SPRAYING MONEY INTO THE WIND.
No one took Jesus Christ’s life from Him; He laid it down Himself, and He took His life up again, and the authority to do this came from His Father (John 10:1-18). The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross was not an accident; it was a choice He made for Himself. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead proves that God the Father was satisfied with the perfect sacrifice Jesus Christ made for the sins of the world (John 1:29). Paul said, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). This Easter Sunday don’t confuse the real reason for Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection with the traditions of this world— only the Bible presents the truth. Our eternal destiny is based upon believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior—it’s your choice!

A few years ago I had a turbine transition student, who may very well have been the worst student I have ever had. A little bit about his personality; he was a salesman and I won’t say of what. He was obsessed with telling me about how much money he made.
He even brought his W-2 form to show me. Said he had flown a multitude of different airplanes which turned out to be a lie. Said he had an AT-502 waiting for him, also a lie. This guy was obnoxious. I let him get to me such that all I wanted to do was finish the course and send his gluteus maximus back to wherever he came from. He stayed at the Tiger Inn (our dormitory) and none of the students wanted to be around him. I guess I should have felt sorry for him, but he was
such a “posterior exit point of the alimentary canal”! Besides, he could not fly worth a flip.
Ag Pilot Photo Mat -$9.99 Great for displaying photos in a fun way unique way. Mat measures 28” x 7”.
So, why do I bring all this up? We were pre-flighting the Thrush and I told him to check the oil. He did and I asked him if he had snapped the dip stick down and locked. He assured me that he had done it. I did not check behind him (big mistake); I suppose because I was in such a hurry to be done with this guy. After about 15 minutes into the flight, I felt a slight vibration and heard a humming noise, both of which became more severe and louder. I took control, climbed to 1500 feet and headed straight for the airport. I knew exactly what had happened. All of the oil had siphoned from the engine. Still M A R K E T P L A C E at 1500 feet and about two miles from the airport, the AgAir Update | Junior Page | 7.08”w x 9.14”h PT6 gave up the ghost and went into automatic feather. I dead sticked the Thrush onto Runway 18 with a tailwind. What is the moral of this little ditty? Circumstances can sometimes clog up your cognitive thinking to where you may cut corners, or forget something, or just plain become irrational. Of course, the best thing would be to go home and relax. The next day you will be able to function much better. However, we all know that is not always practical. Seriously, go back inside the office and lay on the couch. Tell everyone not to bother you, no sudden loud noises and do a 15-minute meditation. Which reminds me, buy the book called Mending the Body, Minding the Mind by Dr. Joan Borysenko. It’s a real eye-opener and should be a must read for ag pilots. Be safe, have fun, make money and don’t let other people make you lose your focus.

EPA proposes new safety measures to protect farm workers from pesticide exposure WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. EPA announced proposed revisions to the Worker Protection Standard in order to protect the nation’s two million farm workers and their families from pesticide exposure. “Today marks an important milestone for the farm workers who plant, tend, and harvest the food that we put on our tables each day,” said Gina McCarthy, EPA Administrator. “EPA’s revised Worker Protection Standard will afford farm workers similar health protections to those already enjoyed by workers in other jobs. Protecting our nation’s farm workers from pesticide exposure is at the core of EPA’s

work to ensure environmental justice.” EPA is proposing significant improvements to worker training regarding the safe usage of pesticides, including how to prevent and effectively treat pesticide exposure. Increased training and signage will inform farm workers about the protections they are afforded under the law and will help them protect themselves and their families from pesticide exposure.
This proposal represents more than a decade of extensive stakeholder input by federal and state partners and from across the agricultural community including farm workers, farmers, and industry on the current EPA Worker Protection Standard (WPS) for Agricultural Pesticides first established in 1992.
Workers and others near treated fields will now be protected from pesticide overspray and fumes. In addition, EPA has proposed that children under 16 be legally barred from handling all

Largest source of Cessna agav parts by Bill Lavender Circa 1994
WEATHERFORD, OK - During my trek across the United States in April of this year I had the opportunity to stop and visit with the gang at J & C Enterprises, Inc. What a pleasant surprise. Owners, Jerry Buster and George Bryan, had on more than one occasion insisted I have lunch with them and include an eyewitness account of their multi-million dollar ag aircraft inventory.

In Oklahoma? I wasn’t prepared for the tour they had in store. I tried desperately to capture with pictures the impact I felt when I saw all that ag plane stuff! Jerry Buster began in the airplane business rebuilding aircraft in 1969. This experience lent to an expert eye for the value of salvage parts. In 1974, Jerry tuned-in on Cessna 188’s. In that same year, just to make sure he had a real handle on ag aviation, he and Dennis Boatwright formed Thomas Ag Aero in

Thomas, Oklahoma. In 1976 Jerry sold out to Terry Thomson. From these beginnings has emerged probably one of the world’s largest Cessna 188 used and new parts inventories. In 1989, today’s 50-50 partner and friend, George Bryan, came on board leaving his white collar job at the local 3M Company. J & C Enterprises incorporated in 1990. Today the company has several warehouses filled with over a million dollars of new ag aircraft parts and somewhere between one half to three quarters of a million dollars in used ag aircraft parts. This translates into over 8,000 line items. Meaning, not 8,000 pieces but 8,000 different kinds of parts! Of course, one of the first questions to materialize was where did all these parts come from. Jerry, George and Jerry’s son, Chris, travel the country and sometimes out of the country, such as Nicaragua, looking for inventories of new and used Cessna 188 parts, as well as wrecks. Demonstrating this technique, George and Jerry, drove me to their graveyard

I wish I had counted those haunting fuselages, at least 30, maybe more. I kept looking at a familiar orange one, about a 1969 model. Anyway, I couldn’t remember the tail numbers of the only Cessna 188 that I owned, I
guess Cessna manufactured more than one orange one. Jerry told me about a trip he made to Nicaragua and how he had to leave as many Cessna parts as he brought

out. Then he further explained the Latin American system of barter. This Oklahoman didn’t have the patience for such negotiations. Our return trip to the office introduced me to the rest of the J & C clan. Mrs. Cecilia, Jerry’s wife, was smiling happily at the computer. But her acquaintance wasn’t made until after I had cleared the front door welcome center, Tracye Kelly. Tracye is the receptionist and usually is the first one you talk with when calling J & C, unless Cecilia can beat her to the phone. Jerry told me Cecilia was secretary/treasurer. But I got the feeling there was more to that description; reminded me of another office in Perry, Georgia! Trespassing deeper into the offices of J & C, I met a familiar face, Phil Schmidt. Phil is J & C’s pilot/mechanic, helping Jerry and George with buying decisions on salvage parts. I met Phil a couple of years ago at an ag plane auction in Greenwood, Mississippi mistaking him for Jerry. Not good. Got it straight now.
Where Cessna 188s go to Heaven? An impressive sight and wonderful treasure of used parts.
After recovering from witnessing so many Cessna 188 parts, not to mention parts for the Pawnee and Thrush, along with the world’s only Aero Commander Lark and Dart new parts inventory, I asked George where did the name J & C Enterprises originate. It didn’t fit his initials. Thoughtfully, George explained that the J represented Jerry. Cecilia and Chris Buster had to fight over the C. The name

was decided on before George came along. With George’s entry, everyone decided to leave the name at J & C Enterprises, Inc. It fit and was already well-known to their customers. In my wanderings through the hangars of J & C, I observed two interesting details, accumulation of airframes to be dismantled and an extreme amount of orderliness. Jerry and George filled me in on how their system worked. All during

the year J & C builds their used parts inventory, cataloging the parts. Each part is assigned a tag that describes the part, its Cessna part number, the serial number and tail number of the aircraft it was removed from. This detailed cataloging is done for several reasons. It provides J & C a method by which to trace the parts active life. This, in turn, works toward satisfying FAA’s concerns for bogus parts. Jerry was quick to point out FAA’s bogus parts scare a few months ago could have a very serious impact on J & C Enterprises. The cataloging system was one way to counter bogus parts concerns and organize zillions of parts. (L-R) Cecilia Buster, "secretary/bookkeeper" and Tracye Kelly, receptionist, offer a smile for the interrupting camera.
Another facet of how J & C accomplishes organization of parts was the good fortune of Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus being located at Weatherford. Four parttime college students come in and work on dismantling aircraft then cataloging the parts. An excellent source of affordable and intelligent labor for a never ending job. In response to a leading question, Jerry explained, “Bill, I don’t really know how may complete Cessna 188’s we could build from the ground up. But we do rebuild about two aircraft a year. This provides the customer with the equivalent of a rebuilt Cessna ag plane. We use either new or almost new parts throughout the aircraft. This also provides a consolidated sale of many parts for us. And, it provides us with another aircraft in the field to service with parts.

Precision Laboratories announces winner of the Volare DCTM Drop to the Crop Sweepstakes WAUKEGAN, IL – Phyllis Howard with Howard Flying Service in Clarksdale, Mississippi, is the winner of the Precision Laboratories Volare DCTM Drop to the Crop Sweepstakes. Howard was drawn from 75 total entries that were received at the 2013 National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) Annual Convention and Exposition in Reno, Nev. She is the winner of a new, recently-launched Apple® iPad Air™. “I was tickled to hear that I had won the Precision Laboratories sweepstakes,” said Howard. “My husband and I attend NAAA each year, and we enjoy stopping by the exhibitor booths and learning about the new products and services available in
our industry. A big thank you to Precision Laboratories for the new iPad Air; I’m really enjoying it.” Volare DCTM is an adjuvant that reduces drift by up to 30 percent is designed for optimal deposition and coverage when applied through aerial equipment. Unlike ordinary drift retardants designed for ground application, Volare DC enhances droplet size by “right-sizing” spray droplets to resist wind stream shear, allowing it to drop to the crop for an on-target application. “My husband Bob has been flying since 1971, and we have owned Howard Flying Service since 1988,” added Howard. “With

Right-sized droplets resist wind shear for less risk of drift. Unlike ordinary drift retardants that were designed for ground application, Volare DC™ eliminates super-sized droplets that rupture from wind shear and micro particles that hang in the air. Instead, Volare DC creates “right-sized” droplets that drop to the crop and stay there. It’s an added dose of confidence and one less thing for you, and your neighbors, to worry about.

I was a little embarrassed to call the guy all the way out to where we were working in the middle of the night for such a task. I thanked him before climbing back in the cockpit, he flipped the wrench in his hand and grinned. “No problem. Fly safe,” he replied. I thought that was pretty darn cool of the guy. I could tell by his attitude that he took pride in the work he did and I was glad for that. I know pilots can be the bane of a mechanic’s existence and vise versa. I also know when you have a good working relationship between the air and ground crews, it makes life a lot easier and schedules run smoother. A properly operating tailwheel is a necessity, just as properly operating fuel controls, flap motors, spray valves and everything else in this business that we take for granted. We trust our lives to the dependability and safety of our machines and their components. A pilot conducts his preflight inspection and if all is well, makes a confident assumption the rest of aircraft is in such a state that it will carry him through the job and return him safely home at the end of the day. Making that assumption is a lot easier when you know you have a mechanic who is as dedicated to his job as you are to yours.

are hard to come by in this industry. The long hours, dusty conditions, sometimes the sheer pressure of being ‘Johnny on the spot’ with answers and solutions are tough combinations. Like a good ag-pilot, it takes years of training and experience for an ag-aviation mechanic to really be on top of his game. By then, the more comfortable, predictive nature of general aviation has called most of them away. We live and work in a world of constantly advancing technology. The days of bailing wire

and duct tape repairs are pretty much behind us. Engines and aircraft systems are sophisticated machines requiring a higher level of aptitude and specialized training. There is a higher caliber of person required to maintain our fleet than there was when we were adapting Packard parts to work on a Stearman. We owe a great debt to the men whose ingenuity got us to where we are and to those whose innovations continue to carry us forward. I think a natural tendency toward those talents are essential to the makeup of any good mechanic. Today, however, those tendencies are tempered with specific requirements as to regulations and maintenance manual directives. Million dollar flying machines (and their associated insurance premiums) are not very tolerant of shade tree fixes. We often lament the dwindling population of pilots in this industry. I have yet to hear anyone address the growing shortage of qualified mechanics. I can count on one hand and not even use my thumb or pinky, the number of true agaviation mechanics I know. These men are also rapidly approaching retirement. They hold a wealth of knowledge and experience that is indispensable and irreplaceable. I hope they have the opportunity to pass down their expertise to a newer generation of mechanics. Without them, our forward momentum will be hindered greatly. Aircraft mechanics are as essential to aviation as aircraft. They are truly the unsung heroes of the flying world. The Wright brothers might have stuck to bicycles had it not been for Charlie Taylor. Chuck Yeager would never have introduced the earth to the thunder of a sonic boom save for the guy on the ground who made sure the Bell X-1 was in top working order. All the aces and aviation greats, Curtis, Rickenbacker, Lindbergh, Post, Earhart, Hoover, Rutan and so many others could have only been names in a phone book had it not been for the guy on the ground with the busted knuckles and grease on his hands.

Paralyzed pilot takes flight by Clay Steen I am from Magee Mississippi and flew ag-planes for four years. In March 2002, I was involved in a car accident that left me paralyzed from the chest down. I have not flown in an ag-plane since. All of that changed recently when I went to Yazoo City, Mississippi to visit a close friend, ag-pilot Kelly Peeler. Kelly has been spraying for 18 seasons and has over 18,000 hours of ag time. He flies a dual cockpit AT-802. He offered to let me ride with him while he was fertilizing. This idea thrilled me and of course, I accepted. I can’t describe the feeling as we took off and headed to the field. The memories of my days flying ag came back to me. Riding in the rear cockpit of the 802, I felt like Kelly was Maverick and I was Goose! I will never be able to thank Kelly enough for what he did for me. Not a day goes by
that I don’t think about crop dusting…
my dream come true, to fly in an agplane again!
Thank you Kelly Peeler for making 1. Kelly Peeler prepares to enter the cockpit of his AT-802 for the flight with Clay Steen. 2. Kelly Peeler and Clay Steen about to depart in Peeler’s dual cockipit AT-802. 3. Kelly offers a “barf” bucket, just in case, as a joke. 4. Making the long awaited ride, spreading fertilizer.

The glass cockpit is here for the ag and general aviation market Yes, you can bring your beloved airplane to the current age without breaking the bank Yorkton Saskatchewan - Electronics International (EI) of Bend Oregon USA is pleased to announce their appointment of Yorkton Aircraft Service Ltd. of Yorkton Saskatchewan, as a dealer for their line of digital, modern aviation instruments. “I am genuinely excited to work with Yorkton Aircraft,” comments Tyler Speed, lead EI representative. “Their professionalism, product knowledge and expertise in the Canadian ag market is exactly what we are looking for! They are connected to the wider general aviation market too, that is the extra bonus. To kick off this partnership, EI has offered a $450 USD rebate on engine monitoring instruments and 10% off other products purchased before April 30, 2014.” The excitement is mutual. “We were first introduced to this company through Thrush Aircraft. Thrush has been installing EI’s digital Engine Monitor since 2011 in their new aircraft and
we were impressed with the system,” states Allan Denesowych, Yorkton Aircraft’s Director of Maintenance. “That product, the MVP50-T monitors all the major functions including N1, N2, ITT, torque, oil pressure, oil temperature, volts, amps, fuel level, fuel flow and time to empty. It has many other functions too. It offers pilots customized, interactive checklists, custom information screens, programmable temp limits, data recording capabilities, and the convenience of a USB Port on the front of the bezel for easy changes in configurations, data recording downloads and other critical files. This is contained all in one instrument!” EI is proud to be the one to bring the “glass panel” to Ag. In 2014 EI’s instrument is now standard equipment in the Air Tractor manufactured models as well. “Clearly this company is a market leader,” emphasizes Allan. But wait there is more to EI than just the MVP50-T! Instruments are available for the piston, twin and turbine market; full engine analyzer models to simple replacement of analog instruments.

No longer just an airline luxury Everyone loves their aircraft and whatever they can do to improve performance, increase value to the aircraft and make flying fun is of interest. These instruments do it all, plus make it sexy! We aren’t kidding! Soon Yorkton Aircraft will have the latest model in their Cessna 172. Visit us, sit in the aircraft, push some buttons. Even a fly if you want!
“The advancement from analog instruments to this system could very well be the next big improvement in this industry since GPS,” suggests Cheryl of Yorkton Aircraft. “The instruments are affordably priced, this is fantastic!” The entire product line is showcased at www.buy-ei.com. Visit that site to see pictures, installation information, testimonials, even videos from users of these products! Call Yorkton Aircraft to discuss pricing, installation and how you can bring your aircraft into 2014 – whether that is a 1951 Cessna or an older/ newer turbine aircraft. “Come on board, it will make your investment feel new again!” invites Cheryl.
All of these instruments are designed and built in the USA and most of the instruments fit flush mount within the aircraft’s existing panel making installation easy. The latest model is an instrument for piston engines that replaces your Tachometer but also replaces the manifold pressure, fuel flow totalizer, EGT/CHT bar graph analyzer, and more! Allan goes on to say, “For piston aircraft these instruments are crucial. Pilots and owners can now accurately monitor fuel management and temperatures. These are key issues in engine performance and adding to the safety envelope. For sure they add value to the aircraft and they just make flying way more fun!”

Transitional maintenance By now you have read a bit about getting back in the game; transitioning from the harsher winter weather and emerging to the spring ready for flight. There are so many things to consider — from regaining currency to brushing up on resource management and wildlife avoidance techniques. From an aviation maintenance point of view, this can be a twopart process.

First up is focusing on “the man.” Previous editions have discussed the importance of ensuring maintenance integrity by never taking on more than you can handle or jobs that are beyond your understanding. There is no shame in admitting that something is new to you. In fact, the springtime transition provides the perfect opportunity to brush up on your proficiencies and as

such, the FAA Safety (FAAST) Team has some great courses to help you on your way. Found here, go.usa.gov/Z8Jj, the website lists core and refresher courses hosted by different agencies. Need to brush up on lubrication points for specific engines? The site has that. Feeling a bit shaky on modern borescope tactics? There is a course for that, too. A highlight course that is now being offered is titled Maintenance Error Avoidance and it can be found here: go.usa.gov/ZvhG.
Spring transition is the right time for you to take a closer look at every aspect of the aircraft. This is also a great time to reaffirm your own personal minimums and to create checklists reflecting your choices. Some things to consider adding to your list
include inspecting yourself (any new ailments?), your shop (are supplies adequate/calibrated/clean?), and publications (are they up to date?). The other half of the coin is “the machine.” Whether the aircraft has been mothballed during the winter or if it routinely flew will make a difference in what kind of inspections should occur during “spring cleaning.” If the aircraft has been stored, a good once-over will ensure items are properly lubricated, critters are evicted, corrosion issues are addressed, and routine battery maintenance is done. It is a great time to accomplish an annual so you can be reassured the aircraft is able to meet the demands of logging long summertime hours. Even if you don’t schedule a formal inspection, spring transition is the right time for you to take a closer look at every aspect of the aircraft and get reacquainted. To learn more about basic inspection techniques, check out FAA’s Inspection Fundamentals handbook (go.usa.gov/ZZ9Y). It’s also a good idea to give your plane a good wash down,

vacuum, and polish because if you are anything like most of my buddies, you did none of this before winter bed down. If the aircraft has been flying during the icier times of the year, springtime once-overs should include a check for frozen precipitation-inflicted structural damage. In addition, a thorough cleaning will get rid of deicing residues, salt buildup, mud, and those personal effects (i.e., the pile of empty coffee cups) you have “stored” in the back. In both cases, you should always confirm that any existing or recent safety bulletins, airworthiness directives, and/or advisory circulars pertaining to your aircraft have been addressed prior to partaking in the new flying season.
Snakes on a plane Although mentioned with humor earlier, in seriousness, wildlife damage isn’t just relegated to bird or mammal strikes. Rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects are resourceful and can be prolific. When you button your aircraft up for the winter, these opportunistic

animals can move in and wreak havoc on your sensitive wiring, create fire hazards, destroy insulation, and I have personal experience of what happens when a very large swarm of bees develops a “taste” for hydraulic fluid and decides to move the colony in. In addition, the droppings of these pests are often highly corrosive and that can damage the structural integrity of your plane as well as ruin a great paint job. They are also a hazard to your personal health, so keep ‘em out!
Warmer temps mean more flying opportunities. With a little bit of attention to “transitional maintenance,” both the man and the machine will be ready to take to the skies. The way it was systems, cockpit air conditioning and even cockpit heating; cockpit heating? hum…—how interesting! Suddenly, I had a flash-back to the years I flew the open cockpit Stearmans. Hot in the summer and cold, very cold, in the winter. Summer flying produced a raccoon face by wearing the cloth WWII helmet and the standard AN 6530 flying goggles and usually a split nose or lip from the sun or a hard-shell bug coming through the prop right into the already blistered “beak”.
by Bob Wheat During this cold, wet winter season that has held a firm grip upon most of us, I recently had an opportunity to stop during my travels and inspect a new ag-aircraft (crop duster to us old timers), a low wing, long nose beauty, all brightly painted, gleaming in the sun sitting outside its hangar on that clear cold day. I was amazed at the size of it and all the bells and whistles this aircraft possessed. The latest in Sat/Nav equipment, windshield washers, the modern instrumentation, communications
Chip Kemper, President
Winter flying produced many discomforts as well, a bird or duck coming through the prop spreading blood and mangled meat and feathers in the face, or a cold rain hitting the face, stinging like pea gravel. The little 6’’ X 14’ windshield didn’t offer much protection either. One cold winter morning, I flew from my satellite base in Texas to Vinton Louisiana, then northward to a place called Beulah, which was well over an hour’s flight from my base. Beulah was actually a pasture in a large cattle ranch and a place where my partner pilot, Rocky Daly and I were to fly from to apply 100 tons of fertilizer on winter pastures that day.

I had encountered a cold drizzle on my early morning flight to this place and temperatures were hovering in the low 40s to high 30s and the forecasts were more of the same all day. However, bundled up in my old WWII Bomber Sheep Skin leather pants and coat, I felt well-prepared for the cold. Wrong ! We got all the info we needed from the ranchers, got the flag boys in place and our day began applying fertilizer. All went well until about 2:00 pm, then the weather began turning colder and wetter. Ferrying up to a mile or more on some pastures, we began having to stop occasionally for a few minutes, clear the thin film of ice from our wings leading edges, warm up in the loader truck cab, then back to the grind. Finally, we emptied the last Killebrew bin. By that time, darkness wasn’t too far from being upon us. We both gassed up, preparing to head home when the radio from the main base suggested that I might want head east to Lake Charles because I probably wouldn’t get back to my airport due to deteriorating weather conditions toward the west.

After a quick discussion with the base and Rocky, I decided to head west anyway. Rocky replied, ok, but you’ll be spending the night in some cold wet pasture. Never the less, I took off headed south, then turned west using car lights to help guide me home. Things began to get tough about half-way home. Darkness set

in, a cold rain pelted me, so I decided to follow I-10 around Beaumont Texas, then cut south across the country which I knew well, toward my base.
So, I set up a slow, powered glide , expecting a rough landing. Feeling for the ground, suddenly lighting flashed and looming in front of me was thick woods.
After well over an hour’s flight, finally getting around Beaumont, I left I-10 and the car lights. Boy, did it ever get dark; goggles fogged up, a steady rain and I knew gas was getting to a critical point. Then suddenly, the P&W 450 burped once and I figured I was about to run out of gas.
Pouring the coal to the P&W, I climbed over the trees and back up into the dark sky. Gaining control of my pounding heart, I realized I was “temporarily misplaced” and I wasn’t where I thought I was.
I thought I knew about where I was and decided to make a powered landing in one of the old rice fields scattered about.
Preparing for a eventual dead-stick landing “somewhere”, when suddenly I popped out of the rain and dead ahead was my airport. After a quick landing and taxing into my hangar, I let out a sigh of relief, leaned into the instrument panel and went to sleep, colder than I’ve ever been. I was so cold I could hardly open my jaws.

Then a short while later, someone was shaking me awake, telling me to get out of the cockpit and into my office and to get warm.
GE H80 Series engines are built to last with advanced materials and a robust turboprop design. Combining the latest technologies with modern 3D aerodynamic design, these powerplants deliver the enhanced takeoff power, dependable hot day performance and reduced cost of ownership required by the modern aerial applicator.
Lucky for me, one of the local farmers was headed home and he saw the tail of my crop duster sticking out the hangar and figured something wasn’t quite right and stopped into investigate. Boy, was I glad he stopped for hypothermia was setting in.

I called the main base early the next morning and reported that I had made it with no problems, only to be told that” Rocky’ had to spend the night in a cold, wet pasture, unable to get to Lake Charles As I marveled at that new, low wing airplane, I wondered, dang it, why didn’t Lloyd Stearman invent a cockpit heater ? —oldduster
