Puerto Rico, zero drift and V-8 power Recently, I made a trip to Puerto Rico, my first. I was going for an article that was not only North American oriented, but had Latin American influences at the same time. I found that in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. Spanish is its primary language with English second, a carry over from its rule by Spain until the Spanish-American War in 1898. The island is approximately 110 miles west to east by 65 miles from north to south for a total of about 5,300 square miles, of which approximately 20% is water from rivers and lakes. It is also the winter base of operations for one aerial applicator from Hannibal, Missouri, the only aerial applicator on the island. Jay’s Flying Service (Jason Blanke) flies under contract for RiceTec, a hybrid rice seed breeding company, using an AT-400. When Jay is not flying in Puerto Rico from September to April, he works mainly corn in the Hannibal area. I won’t go into the details of the article in this editorial. You’ll have to catch it in an upcoming edition of AgAir Update. It could go unsaid, there are no aerial spraying opportunities in Puerto Rico. In the days of growing sugar cane,
numerous ag-aircraft worked on the island. Sugar cane farming has moved west to the Dominican Republic where there are numerous aerial applicators, mostly due to the rising cost of labor. If not for RiceTec’s needs, there would not be an ag-plane working on the island today. An AgAir Update reader, Kyle Scott (CO), sent me a copy of an interesting magazine article. Since drift is a major concern for our industry, Kyle thought a fairly new application for ground machines may find its way into aerial applications and virtually eliminated drift as we know it. You ask how could this be, when we all know “zero” drift is a target everyone wants to achieve but is so elusive. Granules. A group of collaborators (investors?) funded in part by a $5 million grant from Ohio’s Third Frontier Program, according to the February 2012 edition of CropLife magazine, are working with incorporating herbicides into granules. Three of these herbicides are glyphosate, 2,4-D and dicamba. Supposedly, the granules foliar feed when water activates them on the leaf, either from dew or during the

application. Another process being studied is foaming granules. When water touches the granule, it expands into foam covering a greater area. This technology is not too unlike successful soil dispersing products already in use. Currently, studies are being made using ground applicators. However, it is not much of a stretch of the imagination to visualize aircraft being used to disperse the granules. Aircraft are already making granule applications of fertilizer, alpha-toxin treatments and certain herbicides like Spike. Once the granules are perfected, my guess is aircraft will be called upon to make applications and for very good reasons; no soil compaction, timing, no crop damage, etc. I hope those applying for labels will have the foresight to include an aerial application label. If all goes well, by the time you read this editorial, Graham and I will have made a coast to coast excursion from Perry, Georgia to California and back, visiting operators along the way. We have no less than six stops lined up for articles, of which one is this month’s cover story about the TRACE engine. The TRACE engine, formerly the Orenda, is V-8 technology but far from simply an automotive engine bolted to an airframe. It brings to the industry more powerplant choices for the agoperator. The Texas-based company has already delivered several 400-series converted Air Tractors and is working on more STCs for other ag-aircraft. I have always enjoyed working with the TRACE folks and have flown TRACE-powered aircraft several times. Be sure to read my thoughts about this particular aircraft in this issue of AgAir Update. Until next time, Keep Turning...

agair mail wings The new Argentina ag plane that looks like a Pawnee, do you know if they have fabric or metal wings? I’m looking for ribs for my Pawnee. I’ve checked Univair with no luck. Thought I’d try south. JIm Kaz Lodi, WI Hello Kaz; The Argentine company you are referring to is LAVIASA, based east of Mendoza, Argentina. You are testing my memory, however, when I was visiting the company several years ago, I believe the wings of their Puelche (PA-25) were certainly dope and fabric. I would almost bet the ribs are interchangeable, however, probably not
legal for your aircraft. Also, you may find it difficult to contact the company. Polish up on your Spanish, too, before you do. I’ve attached some contact info. Be sure to tell them AgAir Update sent ya. Hope all else is well with you and that you have a safe and prosperous season in Wisconsin.—Bill
visiting My name is Shane Flack and I operate an ag flying businees in southern NSW Australia. We operate eight fixed wing and two rotary wing with a third helicopter hired during summer. Our main summer crops are rice and cotton with an increasing quantity of soy beans and vegetables coming to our area. We also do a variety of pasture
and cereal crop spraying in winter and spring. I am planning a trip to the U.S. and would like to get in touch with aerial applicators in the U.S. rice areas, especially helicopter operators who work in environmentally sensitive areas. Any contacts would be much appreciated. I can be contacted at: shane.flack@yahoo.com.au. Best Wishes, Shane Flack Hello Shane; As a matter of policy, AgAir Update does not get involved in setting up meetings between operators or giving out their information. I am sure you can imagine the problems that could cause and that readers expect privacy.
However, I can print your letter in our Letters to the Editor section of AgAir Update with your email address with hopes someone will contact you. Good luck and let me know how your trip turns out; could be an interesting article, keep notes and take pictures! —Bill

curious I found you on agairupdate.com. I’ve read some of your blogs and value the opinion of a man with so many years in the business. I am an Army helicopter pilot with aspirations for a career in aerial application after I retire from the military. Fortunately, I am already living my childhood dream of a career as a pilot. Seeing the crop dusters do their thing over the years has captured my imagination. I am an outdoors man and have an interest in agriculture. I would love to fill the unique niche that a career in aerial application offers. My vision involves a small operation spraying crops in and around southwestern Kentucky. Spraying is seasonal here, so unless I decided to travel I would be very busy for about six weeks per year. I probably couldn’t afford a million-dollar turboprop. Maybe an old Pawnee that can still get the job done. I’m not sure how much money I could make, but being able to pay for my business expenses and maybe grow the business a little would be a good start for a part time operation in the first few years. Like many aspiring ag pilots, I
am becoming frustrated with all the reasons why it’s too hard to get into the business as a new ag pilot rather than how I can become an ag pilot. Is it so unsafe that I should discard my aspirations and settle on a more mundane second career? From what I’ve read, most of the current ag pilots have been in the business for many years. The NAAA web site says that as food prices and demand goes up, the demand for aerial application will increase in the coming years. As the more senior aerial applicators reach retirement, how will the business continue if new pilots are not allowed to fill their seats? I have a lot of experience flying lowlevel and a clean safety record. I know nothing about aerial application, but I know I can learn this business. Do you have any advice, words of wisdom, encouraging tidbits? Thank you, Shawn Woodman Hello Shawn; You didn’t state whether you had fixed wing tailwheel time or not. If not, then you have a certain degree of a learning curve that is unrelated to your

Not easy, you say? You may have found phone and fax numbers easily, or a service that provides more for a fee. But good email addresses can be elusive. Here’s a site that shows all you need about your politicians, including their voting record, with just two or three clicks. Go to http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/index.htm, then insert your zip code - that’s all - and your reps’ names appear. helicopter flying. The low level part would apply, though, somewhat. First, forget about getting into the business on your own without working for an operator for at least three years beforehand. When I started, I launched out on my own after two seasons and I can assure you, I did not know enough to be doing that. Go to an ag-school. Regardless of what anyone tells you, it will make you smarter and safer. I bet you didn’t get into the cockpit of that helicopter without specific mission training; the same is true with ag. Being able to fly a tailwheel aircraft won’t make you an ag-pilot, nor will going to ag-school for that matter. But the ag-school will definitely give you the upper hand and for too many reasons to list here. Southwestern Kentucky probably is not too good of a place to start your career, as it is limited as far as ag-flying is concerned. Be prepared to travel. Aerial application is a profession and it is becoming more and more difficult to be an ag-pilot. If you really want to get into this business, prepare to pay your dues from the ground up for three or more years. Seek out as many ag-pilots as you can to talk with
them; networking. If you are out of the Services by summer, get a job working on the ground for an operator. In the fall, be sure to start attending state agaviation trade shows. Attend the NAAA show in Savannah in December. Join the NAAA. It is not going to be easy, however, persistence will pay off. Good luck,—Bill Shawn, We were copied on Bill Lavender’s reply to your letter to Ag Air Update as well as I received your e-mail yesterday regarding information. The TRACE Engines V-8 by Bill Lavender ROSENBERG, TX — Have you been considering operating an ag-plane in the heavy iron range of 600 HP or more? Maybe you need to add or replace an aircraft in your fleet or are simply looking for a choice other than the radial or turbine powered plane. There is a notable cost gap between the two. An alternative consideration would be a refurbished Air Tractor AT-301 powered with a water-cooled TRACE Engines OE600 engine. With STC certification expected before publication of this article, TRACE Engines will offer its V-8 design engine of 600 SHP for the popular AT-301 Air Tractor. Already, the company holds an STC for the AT-401 airframe. The AT-301 airframe is aptly suited for the TRACE Engines conversion. One of the main factors is the AT-401 airframe is often used for turbine engine conversions, thereby making it more costly to acquire. Depending on how much is invested in an AT-301 airframe after removing its radial engine, for about $80,000 USD (approximately $100,000 for the AT-401) an airframe can be totally refurbished by George’s Aircraft and for an additional $230,000 USD the firewall forward would have the all-new TRACE Engines OE600, including new cowling, all engine accessories, a 106” McCauley propeller and instrument panel. George’s Aircraft, located about 50 miles west of Wichita Falls, Texas (29TX), is the exclusive installation center for the OE600. For a total price of around $330,000 and an operator-furnished airframe, an ag-operator can

have what is virtually a new AT-301 TRACE Engine aircraft. The aircraft has 123-gallon fuel capacity and a 325-gallon hopper. George’s Aircraft does an excellent job of refurbishing the airframe with all new bolts, spring gear, cables, side panels, stainless steel Dzus fasteners, aluminum belly skin, seat cover, paint, tires, brakes, wing-spar modes and OEM hopper refurbishment. All AD’s are complied with, as well. With the new firewall forward power, the aircraft is as close to being new as possible. At George’s Aircraft, the refurbish and conversion takes about 90 days. An engine conversion-only requires about 150 man hours. For a later model AT-301 refurbish, the hopper is 350 gallons and the aircraft comes with a metal tail. TRACE Engines‘ Andy Biery invited me to conduct an AgAir Update evaluation flight in TRACE Engines’ AT-302 while it was being upgraded with a spray and Hemisphere GPS systems at Lane Aviation. The 1979 aircraft with only 1800 TT used to be a factory AT-302 with a Lycoming turboprop engine before being refurbished by TRACE Engines. The 1500-hour TBO TRACE engine requires only basic maintenance. Every 50 hours the oil and oil filter should be changed and the radiator’s water level checked. The radiator cooling system should be flushed at the annual inspection. There is also an exhaust valve inspection required every 400 hours. However, the next generation of TRACE Engines will have this inspection extended to TBO with a new valve geometry and a new style camshaft.
Also, the next generation TRACE Engines will have a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system. The FADEC will replace the fuel injection and magneto systems. It is also expected to improve the 32-40 GPH fuel consumption, along with certification for use of automotive fuel. The TRACE Engines conversion kit weighs approximately 1300 pounds, about 200 pounds lighter than a radial engine and prop configuration, or nearly 300 pounds lighter when compared to a geared radial engine and prop. Once Andy briefed me with all the information about the OE600, I was eager to start the evaluation. It had been quite awhile since I’d flown an Air Tractor, so I elected to make the first couple of flights with the hopper empty and with full fuel. Andy explained that I should ease in the power allowing the turbocharger to catch up at 30” of manifold pressure. My limit was wide open throttle, or 52” MP. The indicated RPMs were those of the engine with a redline at 4,400. The propeller is gear driven at a 2:1 ratio. The EGT limit is 1550 F° with a normal operating range is the mid-1400s. The aircraft was outfitted with a JPI Engine Monitor system. I “played” with the empty aircraft using a power setting of 32” and 3,800 RPMs. This was more than enough power and the aircraft flew across the field at 130-135 MPH. After a series of flybys for pictures and a couple of landings, I taxied the aircraft to the loading area and pumped 200 gallons of water into the hopper. The density altitude was 1500 feet with a
seven-knot wind from the south, not challenging conditions. Because the TRACE Engine is turbocharged, it can make full power at any density altitude the ag-operator may encounter. The TRACE Engines AT-302 lifted off the runway almost immediately with 45” MP and 4,400 RPM, power to spare. The aircraft handled this light load with ease using 35” and 4,000 RPM. The extra power made the aircraft fly very similar to when it was empty. Now, it was time to see how it would do with a full load. The last flight was made with the hopper completely full at 325 gallons and about a 3/4 fuel load. This time I used 52” MP and 4,400 RPM on takeoff. The aircraft broke ground before the 1,500-foot mark on the runway. With a higher density altitude, a more experienced pilot would probably be able to be flying at the same point. A 1/2 mile airstrip would have ample length under any conditions, short of a severe downwind takeoff. With the full load, I used 40” and 4,000 RPM to simulate spray runs with the aircraft. It handled nicely, scooting across the field at 140 MPH and making the turns with ease. I wasn’t doing hammerhead or split-S turns, just safe basic 270° procedure turns at about 90 MPH with a small amount of flaps. Coming from a Thrush background, the Air Tractor was plenty light on the controls for me. However, it has the short wings of an AT-301 without aileron or elevator servos. Adding servos may be something an Air Tractor pilot would want. I prefer the feel the aircraft had without the servos, but then, I didn’t fly it all day long and tire of making turns. I couldn’t find any negative traits in the TRACE
A little about TRACE Engines TRACE Engines is based in Midland, Texas. There are four engines in service for ag-aviation. The V-8 engine is 495 cubic inches (8.1 liters) and weighs 740 pounds dry. It has an aluminum block with six-bolt main caps that hold the AgAir Update Editor, Bill Lavender, makes entry into a simulated spray run with the TRACE Engines OE600 AT-302.
crankshaft in place. The engine is rated at 600 SHP for takeoff and 500 SHP for continuous use. Its rated fuel consumption is 0.44 lbs/hp/hr and has a power to weight ratio of 0.81 hp/lb (1.33 kW/kg). Using 45” MP and 4,200 RPM would burn about 40 GPH. A reduction in power to 36” MP and 3,800 RPM drops the fuel flow to 27 GPH. The first OE600 TRACE Engines conversion was launched November 11, 2010, and was installed on an AT-401 owned by Neal Aircraft, Inc. of Slaton, Texas. In an upcoming edition of AgAir Update, there will be an evaluation article of the TRACE Engines AT-401 that the airframe was refurbished and conversion installed by George’s Aircraft. The OE600 engine has been installed on AT-401, AT-301, Aero Commander, Chinese N5A and the de Havilland Beaver aircraft.

Engine AT-302. It picked up speed descending into the field similar to a turbine AT-400 series aircraft, just not quite as much but more than a radial AT-301. It may not be as fast as a turbine 300 or 400 series Air Tractor at normal power settings, however, it is burning about 25% less fuel than a turbine. If the operator wants to buy more fuel, then I’m sure a higher power setting will make up the speed difference. It will take some getting used to the noise the engine makes if idled too low or when shutting down. When idling under 1,700 engine RPMs and during shut down, the prop “drives” the engine and causes a rattling noise. Andy assured me this was not a problem and even showed me a short video of an open gear box and how the gear teeth lap create this noise. As a matter of general operating procedures, the pilot should keep the engine idle speed at 1,700-2,000 RPM. Remember, this is the engine RPMs and that the propeller would be rotating at 850-1,000 RPM. With an overhaul cost of $40,000 (really a remanufacturing to new specs), engine reserves should be about $26 an
hour, considerably less than a turbine engine’s reserves. Per acre fuel cost is going to be neck-in-neck with the turbine. Although the TRACE engine is burning about 20% less fuel, the fuel cost of av-gas is offsetting this savings when compared to Jet-A. However, with the next generation TRACE engine, being able to use 91-octane fuel (automotive), there should be a fuel cost savings, along with the convenience of using automotive fuel. All things considered, an operator can pay almost any price for an ag-plane. If turbine performance is wanted, that cost can range from $250,000 to over a $1,000,000. Of course, a $250,000 turbine would surely be lacking in many things such as the engine not being new. With the TRACE Engine conversion installed on a George’s Aircraft refurbished AT-301/302, the operator has nearly a new airframe and a new firewall forward for less than a similar turbine powered aircraft. Factor in the projected operating costs, the TRACE Engine AT-301/302 makes for an excellent choice between the radial and the turbine powered ag-plane.

Maps I was flying in a remote section of the Valley a while back. It was a dark night and the air was rough. There was a lot of dust suspended in the air reducing the effectiveness of my lights to about half. The map that was supplied by the PCA was a really bad copy of a really bad copy. The lines were skewed and information was blacked out. I wound up circling three or four times in order to sweep my lights around enough to get a good picture of the fields before me. Alternating between my flashlight shining on the vague map and squinting my eyes into the gray haze, I finally determined the correct field and was able to go to work. A certain amount of aggravation is a part of everyday

life for an ag pilot, but there are some instances that are completely avoidable. At the start of the night I had gotten in a hurry and overlooked the condition of the map. An error that came back to haunt me while trying to fly in less than ideal conditions in an unfamiliar area. Sometimes I think the word “aggravation” was originally coined as a way to describe the blending of agriculture and aviation. Modern agricultural aviation is a cutting edge industry. Today’s operations are a far cry from their predecessors that relied more on ingenuity than technology. The economic stakes are much higher today, as well. Just about every aspect of today’s food and
fiber production represent fortunes in investment and risk. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars in manpower and equipment behind every job that an ag pilot does. We have the best of modern engineering and precision application devices at our finger tips. From our own personal gear to the aircraft we fly, the systems and avionics we rely on; the tools at our disposal are generally the best there is. Why then, with all this advancement are we still getting field maps that wouldn’t make the cut off requirements for kindergarten refrigerator art? It’s kind of like working in a hardware store and using a dime as a screw driver.

I know the guys in the Midwest have mostly broken the code on maps and field location. Satellite pictures and GPS coordinates take a lot of the guess work and error possibility out of the job. Nothing is ever one hundred percent sure, but the better your tools the better the probability of a positive outcome. Before the night’s work begins, I generally review my maps and draw in things that are omitted or obscured. I will write the road names in large bold print so they are easier to see. Sometimes I redraw the whole map or have to call the PCA for confirmation or a replacement. I’ve fallen victim to the bad or mistaken map design before. It’s not a happy place to be. Even if the map is wrong, the result is the same and the pilot will take the brunt of the fall out. I fly in several corners of the three valleys we operate in. Sometimes it will be months before I’m working the same area, so familiarity gets a little vague. We have a spotter that can be invaluable at helping to locate and identifying unfamiliar fields. It also helps to have other pilots who are just a radio call away that have been flying the same areas for thirty years. I’m reminded of the conversation I
Center Boom
had with a PCA not long ago when the map he sent was completely illegible. “It’s just south of your airstrip.” He replied impatiently. Well, I thought, that at least narrowed it down to a portion of the hemisphere. I asked again for more detail. He took a deep breath and replied. “You fly over it almost every night.” Okay, that at least narrowed it down to a specific area code. Finally he decided to send a better map. It worked out well because working off the first map and going off of what I thought the area was would have put me a mile off target. I know we all have had similar experiences. It’s a part of the job that has almost become tradition. Information is ammunition. The more you have the better your chances of success. Going on assumptions or “possible maybes” will set a pilot up for failure. Sometimes it’s difficult to ask for help. Our pride gets in the way and we don’t want to sound stupid. I always figure it’s better to ask a stupid question than to have to explain a stupid mistake. Besides, the least the grower or PCA can do is provide us with the necessary tools and information that we require to do a good job for them.

Enstrom 480B agricultural spray system certified in China Menominee MI—Enstrom Helicopter Corporation and Isolair Inc. recently received Chinese certification for the
Innovator II 3900-480 spray system. The lightweight system fits all Enstrom 480 and 480B models, and can be quickly installed or removed for ease of use. The launch customer in China for the Isolair spray system was long time Enstrom customer Wuhan
Helicopters, who recently purchased a new 480B helicopter specifically for agricultural spraying. “We see a lot of potential in the agricultural spraying market,” said Enstrom’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Tracy Biegler. “The combination of the 480B’s low costs, rugged construction, and safety, along with the efficiency and ease of use of the Innovator II system make for an attractive package. Operators in North America and Europe are already seeing this, and we are excited to be expanding into the Asian market.” “The 480B is proving to be an excellent spraying helicopter, and it is very versatile,” noted Michael Powell, President of Isolair. “With easily changed nozzles and a flow control right in the cockpit, the operators can tune the system for whatever they are spraying. We designed it to be easy
to install and remove so that the operators can use the aircraft for other purposes when not spraying. The 120-gallon tank mounts under the belly, and the entire assembly, pumps, booms, etc… all attaches with only a few quick disconnect pins.” Founded in 1959, Enstrom Helicopter Corporation manufactures a complete line of helicopters. The three-seat, piston-powered F28F and 280FX are popular training, sport, and light commercial aircraft. The larger turbine-powered 480B is available as a three-place advanced trainer and patrol aircraft, a 2+2 four-seat training helicopter, or as a three to five-place executive transport. For law enforcement applications, Enstrom produces an optionally equipped variant of the 480B, known as the Guardian and the F28F called the Sentinel.

BASF champions Operation S.A.F.E. again in 2012 Program offering equipment and NAAA membership incentives to aerial applicators who participate in fly-ins enters third season RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—BASF and the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) are teaming up for another year in support of Operation S.A.F.E. (Self-regulating Application and Flight Efficiency). Through this partnership, BASF provides financial support for participating aerial applicators through sponsorship of fly-ins throughout the country. NAAA members also qualify for application equipment rebates as part of Operation S.A.F.E., which provides aerial applicators an opportunity to increase equipment performance, applicator
knowledge and help ensure safety. “We’ve had more than 1,250 aerial applicators participate in nearly 150 fly-ins throughout the country during the three years our Operation S.A.F.E. incentive program has been in effect,” said Tony Goede, Aerial Manager, BASF. “BASF continues this partnership with NAAA to help the aerial application industry continue to be safe, efficient and effective.” Any operator or pilot can participate in an Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in clinic. Those who are NAAA members can take advantage of the BASF Equipment and NAAA Membership Rebate Program. NAAA member participants wishing to collect the rebate are required to partake in a calibration clinic, and subsequently complete the BASF and NAAA Operation S.A.F.E. Incentive Program application form. After completing these steps, the
operator or pilot can be reimbursed for some of their 2012 membership dues or submit receipts to receive rebates for nozzles and/or tips purchased for their aircraft.
Any operator or pilot can participate in an Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in clinic. “BASF is steadfast in its commitment to help grow the ag aviation industry, as demonstrated by their generous support of NAAA once again,” said Andrew Moore, Executive Director of NAAA. “We’re grateful for their partnership and for making these incentives available to encourage the
most effective, targeted application and increased safety.” Operation S.A.F.E. clinics are part of BASF’s ongoing stewardship effort in support of aerial applicators and the safe and proper application of its products. BASF is committed to offering reliable, effective products—like Headline AMP™ fungicide for corn and Headline® fungicide for a number of crops, including soybeans and cereals— to the agricultural aviation industry. Operation S.A.F.E. was developed in 1981 by NAAA and is managed by the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF). The program is designed to demonstrate that agricultural aviators recognize their responsibility to ensure precise agricultural chemical applications. Operation S.A.F.E. clinics give operators and pilots the opportunity to

In addition, participating applicators agree to submit voluntarily to an inspection of their aircraft and recognize the importance of using operating procedures to help ensure: • Compliance with manufacturers’ mixing rates, application recommendations, and label requirements of agricultural chemicals. • Adequacy of safety procedures in storing and handling agricultural chemicals. • Compliance with flight safety procedures. NAAA encourages every operator and pilot to participate annually in an Operation S.A.F.E. clinic. “Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins allow applicators to evaluate important factors like spray patterns, droplet size and application precision,” Goede said. “BASF continues to support programs like this to help the industry increase safety, efficacy and stewardship.”
NAAA members also can access the library of education and communication stewardship services offered by the association. NAAA releases 2012 aerial application survey results A landmark NAAA survey of operators and pilots offers the most comprehensive glimpse of the aerial application industry ever Eight years after NAAA conducted its last survey, a new view of the industry has emerged thanks to two landmark new surveys of Part 137 operators and pilots conducting agricultural operations. Taken together, the 2012 NAAA Aerial Application Industry Surveys paint the most comprehensive portrait of the aerial application industry ever. The results are documented in the

official operator and pilot reports, which are available exclusively to NAAA members. Free copies were mailed to all NAAA members. The surveys also are available on NAAA’s website, www.agaviation.org, in the News & Publications section. NAAA surveyed member and nonmember Part 137 operators and pilots between December 14, 2010, and March 31, 2011, to gather data about the demographics, standard practices, equipment, crops and acres treated, risk perceptions, and health and safety of operators and pilots working in the aerial application industry.
100 Hour Inspection Eddy Current Inspection Aircraft Recovery Aircraft Refurbishment
Comparisons with data obtained in prior surveys were made to identify trends. An additional purpose was to gather information about the aerial application of crop protection products and provide such data to the EPA and crop protection product manufacturers to aid in registration/reregistration, thereby increasing the availability of those products to the aerial application industry. The survey was administered on NAAA’s behalf by SRA International and funded by a grant provided by the Southwest Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention, and Education in Tyler, Texas. To ensure confidentiality, a Data Use Agreement was signed assuring the data belongs to NAAA and will not be disclosed without NAAA’s permission.
The pilot portion of the 2012 survey was the first of its kind to focus exclusively on agricultural pilots.

A total of 508 operators and 324 pilots responded to the web-based survey, which was modeled after similar paper-based surveys conducted in 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2004. The pilot portion of the 2012 survey was the first of its kind to focus exclusively on agricultural pilots. The 37.6% response rate among operators is very high compared to other surveys among similar target audiences. The pilot results closely correspond to the operator results, suggesting that the reliability of both surveys is high. Some of the key elements to emerge from the 2012 NAAA Aerial Application Industry Survey are as follows.
Demographics: On average, operator respondents have been Part 137 certificate holders for 21.8 years. Operators have been in the industry 6.1 years longer than pilot respondents (27.4 years to 21.3 years) and have, on average, 5.8 years more agricultural flying experience than non-operator pilots (25.5 to 19.7). The Average age of operator respondents was 53. Pilot respondents were 49.9, on average. Flight Time: Operator respondents had an average of 12,336 hours of total flight time, including 9,946 hours of agricultural flight time. Total flight time for pilot respondents ranged from less than 100 to 34,000 hours for an average of 10,997 hours. Pilots logged an average 8,510 hours of agricultural flight time. Total flight time reported by operators was 11% more than ag pilots. Total agricultural flight time was 17% more than pilots. Geography: Respondent business headquarters were in 44 different states, all but Connecticut, Nevada, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Hawaii. The top five states for aerial application business headquarters among the operator respondents, in order, are: Texas, Arkansas, Minnesota and, tied for fourth, Kansas and California. Equipment and Standard Practices: During normal operations, operators reported they had an average of two pilots and 2.1 aircraft per operation. That’s slightly less than the 2.2 aircraft per operation reported in the 2004 survey. Fixed-wing aircraft account for 87% of the fleet, helicopters 13%. These are comparable to the 2004 survey when the proportion of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters was 88% and 12%, respectively. Sixty-five percent of the helicopters are turbine powered and 68% of the fixed-wing aircraft are turbine powered.
Equipment for combined fixed-wing and rotorcraft aircraft (operator results)
*1,076 total aircraft (helicopters and fixed wing)
The new operator survey also highlights the technological advances that have occurred over the past eight years. Closed cockpits are in place in 99% of the fixed-wing aircraft and 87% of the helicopters used for aerial application. GPS use has grown from 20% in 1994, to 60% in 1998, to 94.7% in 2006, according to an independent EPA survey, to the point where it is practically indispensable. Operators reported 99% of their aircraft had a GPS system with a mounted lightbar; however, only 93% of the operators said they used GPS as their primary means of swath guidance. Eight-five percent of aircraft used were equipped with smokers to determine wind direction. To minimize spray drift, 83% said they used smokers, 82% said they used drift control additives, 79% said they modified droplet size and 73% changed flight patterns to minimize spray drift. Crop Treatment: When asked to list the usual and maximum number acres treated in a single day with a single aircraft for a variety of crops, the highest averages in terms of usual acres were applications to cotton, soybeans, corn and rice. This also was true for the maximum acres treated in a single day using a single aircraft: cotton (1,122 usual acres/1,993 max. acres), soybeans (1,111 usual/1,953 max.); corn (959 usual/1,820 max.) and rice (946 usual/1,701 max.). In nearly all instances, the average acres in 2010 were higher than in 2002. Acreage data in the 2012 and 2004 surveys were based on the two most recent full seasons of aerial application work. Risk: Operators and pilots view power lines, communication towers, and meteorological evaluation towers (METs) as the top three occupational hazards; however, the relative magnitude of the risk was higher for pilots. When asked specifically about wind turbines and
METs, 59% of operator respondents and 56% of pilot respondents said they pose a safety or field-accessibility issue. In addition, 35% of operators said they have policies in place regarding working near wind turbines or METs. Operator Workload: Nearly one half of the operators work between 100 and 200 days a year doing operations and during the busy season, 67% worked between 8-12 hours a day with most report getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
Once again, the complete operator and pilot survey reports can be found in the News & Publications section of NAAA’s website, www.agaviation.org, but you must be an NAAA member to access them. Pesticide adventures at Triangle Lake

by Dennis T. Avery Churchville, VA—My brother lives in Triangle Lake, a small community in Oregon’s Coastal Range foothills, surrounded by pastures and forests. Recently, a wealthy couple from Chicago bought a local property and is kindling what they call the “Pitchfork Rebellion” against pesticides. They allege environmental damage and health hazards to local residents from tree, crop and roadside spraying. I thought of Larry and Linda when the American Farm Bureau Federation sent me a recent column that said Obama appointees have been demonstrating what farmers and ranchers have known for years: that too many government agencies have become havens for activists not interested in the basic functions of safety and commerce, but in “reshaping” our society. Back at Triangle Lake, the EPA’s Pesticide Analytical Response Center has come in to assess the local pesticide risks. The EPA has already collected urine, water and garden samples from 64 local volunteers. They’ve tested for residues of 116 different pesticides. Linda says she volunteered, and the EPA found no pesticides traces in her urine or the family drinking water. There have been problems with the EPA’s volunteer sampling because many of the volunteers do not live where this year’s spraying was scheduled. The Pitchforks now accuse the local landowners of hindering the collection of post-spray samples on their properties.
Experts warn that the knapweed is spreading across the Mountain West region.

At a public meeting April 10, many residents said they were concerned if the Pitchfork Rebellion prevailed they would lose the ability to control Russian knapweed, an invasive Asian alien with creeping roots that sink 20 feet deep into the soil. It literally poisons other vegetation. Experts warn that the knapweed is spreading across the
Mountain West region at rates of 8–14 percent per year. Triangle Lake suffered many job losses in the 1990’s, after the Clinton Administration radically cut Pacific Northwest logging to “protect” the spotted owl. Monitoring since the shutdown has found the spotted owls are actually hybridizing with the Eastern barred owl, which is moving across Canada and into the Pacific Northwest, but the rural Oregon lumbering jobs are still gone. So, Triangle Lake is now more dependent on pastures and Christmas tree farming. But the Russian knapweed is threatening those enterprises too. The usual treatment has been with the herbicides atrazine and 2, 4-D--herbicides which have had decades of safe effectiveness. The Natural Resources Defense Council has recently—again—demanded both atrazine and 2, 4-D be banned. The alleged threat to humans from 2 4-D is unproven “endocrine disruption.” (Eating soy products and peas will also “disrupt” your endocrine system.) Atrazine’s safety has been repeatedly confirmed by the EPA itself, but it’s targeted because non-toxic traces of it turn up seasonally
in Corn Belt drinking water. There are newer herbicides that kill knapweed, but they’re expensive—a real problem for rural Oregon. What is this costing the federal government, (and thereby the taxpayers) and to what purpose? The pesticides being used today even survived the EPA’s vengeful attacks during the Carter years. But Carol Browner, Carter’s EPA Administrator, is now a White House Czar. She wants some pesticide scalps to placate the folks who have forgotten why we needed pesticides in the first place— such as keeping bedbugs out of hotels and schools, and ensuring we have a potato crop next fall. What will the Pitchfork Rebellion cost Triangle Lake, and what does EPA’s eagerness to jump into a meaningless fray mean for our futures? Dennis T. ground level in rural areas of Idaho. New towers will have to comply with the law’s provisions starting July 1. Existing towers will be allowed one year to be brought into compliance. It was estimated that there are more than 400 small unmarked and unlit towers that would be covered by the provisions.
New towers will have to comply with the law’s provisions starting July 1. “These small, unmarked towers present a significant hazard to low-level general aviation aircraft operations, including aerial application, emergency response, wildfire suppression, and medical helicopter operations,” said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of airports and state advocacy. The bill, signed by Otter on March 27, exempts power transmission lines and military communications structures.
From the bill’s February introduction, AOPA, the Idaho Aviation Association, and the Idaho Agricultural Aviation Association worked collaboratively to advocate for its provisions, conferring with the governor’s office and Senate leadership. “Idaho members should reach out to their state legislators and thank them for their support of this significant GA safety enhancement,” Pecoraro said, noting that the bill’s safety provisions come at no cost to the aviation community. Recent passage of a tax exemption bill covering aircraft parts and supplies was another highlight of an Idaho legislative session that was supportive of aviation, he said. Credit: AOPA www.aopa.org

wing and a prayer
The war between God’s army and satan’s army In eternity past, the one and only sovereign, holy, and infinite God created the angels for His purposes and glory. These angels sang together, and shouted for joy when God created the physical universe (Job 38:7). God was the sovereign ruler of the government within the universe, which was a government of light and life. Everything in God’s kingdom was perfect, no conflict of any type. After creation “God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:25). Within the government of God was an angel of the highest order, of the cherub class, named Lucifer. Lucifer thought he should be the
God of the universe and he rebelled against God. God allowed Lucifer to form a government of rebellion within the universe (Only God knows why). Now there are two governments in the universe; God’s government of light and life, and Satan’s government of sin and darkness. These two governments are fighting in the heavens and on this earth for the control of this universe and the souls of humanity. Isaiah wrote about the rebellion and eventual destruction of this angel, “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut

down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit” (Isaiah 14:12-15). Through Ezekiel, God speaks of this angel and his eventual destruction, “You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You
were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you…Therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and
I destroyed you, O covering cherub” (Ezekiel 28:11-16). God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden within God’s government of light and life and told Adam to rule over the garden, and Adam and Eve had fellowship and communion with the God. God’s only restriction for Adam and Eve was that they couldn’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; and if they ate of the forbidden fruit they would die. Satan deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit and she gave the fruit to Adam and he ate. By their own free will Adam and Eve disobeyed God and died spiritually, and were cast out of the Garden and the whole earth was cursed because of their sin (Genesis 3:1-22). Adam and Eve were cast out of the presence of God and entered into Satan’s government of sin and darkness and became slaves of Satan and ruled by their sinful fleshly desires. Adam and Eve needed a Savior to rescue them from Satan’s government of death and darkness—they had no power to save themselves. “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned”
(Romans 5:12). Adam disobeyed God and became a sinner and left a legacy of sin to all humanity—all humanity inherited Adam’s sinful nature. With the exception of Jesus Christ, every person born on this earth is a habitual sinner and a slave to their sinful nature—we are born that way. Just as Adam and Eve needed a Savior to save them from their sinful nature, so every person on this earth needs a Savior! “There is none righteous, no, not one…For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:10, 23). Paul said, “For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ…Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:17, 20-21). To solve the sin problem for humanity God sent His only begotten Son into this world in the likeness of sinful flesh to be tempted like we are and know and understand the weakness of our flesh when we are tempted, and yet He was without sin (Hebrews 2:18). The only way out of
Satan’s government of sin and darkness is through faith in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, who came into this world as a man and died on the Cross as the perfect sacrifice for the penalty of our sin. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Choosing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior puts you in God’s army, but if you reject Jesus Christ you are under Satan’s control and in his army—there is no middle ground. Some day this battle for the universe and the souls of humanity will come to an end. Jesus Christ will
come back and destroy Satan and his forces and cast them into the lake of fire and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever (Revelation 20:7-10). God loves you and wants you in His heaven, but He will not force you to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, so your sins can be forgiven (Acts 4:12)—you have to make that choice for yourself. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can wait—you only have one day at a time—today may be your last day on this earth.

in my opinion
Spring safety meeting I left Mississippi in the spring of 1996 to fly as a somewhat Gypsy pilot all over Texas on various government boll weevil contracts (Boll Weevil Eradication Program). Before then, I operated my own flying service from 1971 through 1989 in the hills of Mississippi, with the exception of one year I was recovering from burns received from a very sudden stop around a sweet gum tree in my Pawnee. During my tenure at Mac’s Flying Service in Grenada, the state was divided into six, maybe seven, districts. The size of each district was such that each one had about the same number of operators. Each district
held a safety meeting in the spring. The FAA was invited and a huge fish fry or bar-b-q cook-out was hosted by Kimmel Aviation Insurance and Barksdale Bonding Co. I think some of the major chemical companies also contributed to the regale and were given the podium to introduce new products. Dorothy and Frank Kimmel and Billy Ray Adams (Barksdale Insurance) spoke on ag aviation insurance. Of course, the FAA had a spiel regarding safety and ag aviation accidents from the previous year. At some of the events, the US Air Force from Columbus Air Force Base spoke

to the operators about military “oil burner” routes through the state. There were always a lot of questions for the speakers, which were an invaluable part of the program. Fellowshipping among the pilots and operators was just as valuable as the presentation. During these gathering of ag-pilots and operators, friction amongst them was reduced immensely and the use of another operator’s airstrip, as well as their assistance, was often the outcome. I believe these sorts of meetings have helped to greatly reduce accidents, as well as improve relationships.

Smoke gets in your eyes Flame-retardant materials and improved fire-extinguishing systems have made inflight fires a rare occurrence. Extinguishing the fire obviously is first priority, but smoke inhalation is a very real danger. In fact, inhalation of the toxic gases in smoke is the primary cause of fatalities in most fires. Smoke gases do not need to reach lethal levels to seriously impair pilot performance. Knowing what to do is crucial, and the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute’s (CAMI) pilot-education brochure on this topic is a great source of information. Here are the key points:
Smoke and Smoke Gases The smoke composition and heat from a fire vary with the type of burning materials and environmental conditions. The two principal toxic-combustion gases from smoke are carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Irritant gases, such as hydrogen chloride and acrolein, are generated from burning wiring insulation and some other cabin materials.

Smoke Effects For many reasons, smoke is bad news for pilots. Visual smoke can make it more difficult to escape. Irritant gases can induce tears, pain, and disorientation. The toxic gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, can cause physical incapacitation and death. As you may remember from ground school, carbon monoxide combines with the hemoglobin in blood and interferes with the oxygen supply to tissues. Hydrogen cyanide inhibits oxygen utilization at the cellular level. Even relatively innocuous fire gases, such as carbon dioxide, can be harmful, because CO2 increases the respiration rate, which can increase inhalation of other combustion gases. The decreased oxygen level in most fire scenarios compounds the problem of getting enough oxygen to maintain normal function.
Survival Planning the correct actions in advance will greatly increase your chances of survival, if you experience an in-flight fire. Extinguishing the fire is obviously a top priority, so a small, handheld fire extinguisher should be standard equipment on your aircraft. Be sure your
equipment includes a cloth. A cloth held over the nose and mouth can provide protection from smoke particulates. Wetting the cloth will allow it to absorb water-soluble toxic gases, such as hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride, so bottled water should be another item for your on-board emergency equipment kit. Another action to consider in advance is cabin venting. Venting will reduce the concentration of combustion gases, but remember that it may not be a viable option while actually fighting the fire. For more information on this subject and other important topics, take a look at the CAMI brochures at http://www.faa. gov/pilots/safety/pilotsafetybrochures/. Good health and safe flying! EPA denies petition on 2,4-D pesticide In a petition filed on November 6, 2008, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) requested that EPA cancel all product registrations and revoke all tolerances (legal residue limits in food) for the pesticide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, or 2,4-D. After considering public comment received on the petition and all the available studies, EPA is denying the request to revoke all tolerances and the request to cancel all registrations. By way of background, in 2005, as part of the regulatory process to ensure pesticides meet current regulatory standards, EPA completed a review on the registration and on the safety of the tolerances for 2,4-D. EPA determined that all products containing 2,4-D are eligible for reregistration, provided certain changes were incorporated into the labels and additional data were
generated and submitted to the EPA for review. During the recent review of the petition from NRDC to revoke the tolerances, EPA evaluated all the data cited by NRDC and new studies submitted to EPA in response to the reregistration decision. Included in the new studies is a stateof-the-science extended one-generation reproduction study. That study provides an in-depth examination of 2,4-D’s potential for endocrine disruptor, neurotoxic, and immunotoxic effects. This study and EPA’s comprehensive review confirmed EPA’s previous finding that the 2,4-D tolerances are safe. EPA also carefully reviewed NRDC’s request that the Agency cancel all 2,4-D product registrations. Based on studies addressing endocrine effects on wildlife species and the adequacy of personal

protective equipment for workers, the Agency concluded that the science behind our current ecological and worker risk assessments for 2,4-D is sound and there is no basis to change the registrations. 2,4-D is a phenoxy herbicide and plant growth regulator that has been used in the U.S. since the 1940s. It is currently found in approximately 600 products registered for agricultural, residential, industrial, and aquatic uses. There are 85 tolerances for 2,4-D. EPA published the NRDC petition for public comment on December 24, 2008. EPA documents responding to NRDC’s petition on 2,4-D including a prepublication copy of the agency’s Federal Register Order are available on EPA’s website at www.epa.gov/pesticides. When the Federal Register document is published in mid-April, it will be available with the related documents in docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2008-0877 at www.regulations.gov. A 60-day period for filing objections and requests for a hearing on the Order runs from the date of publication in the Federal Register.

The grape “vineyard” (128 plants) by L.B. Davis Davis Ag Consultants An out of state helicopter operator applied the herbicide 2,4-D on a pasture in a lower valley on the eastern slopes of the of a mountain range out west. A claimant alleged that the 2,4-D drifted over a mile to the west and damaged his grape vineyard. The vineyard was on a shale hill about 100 to 150 feet above the valley floor. There was a road that went directly from the treated pasture onto the claimant’s property. The road made it easy to inspect the area between the two. We found symptoms of 2,4-D treatment within a few feet of the pasture and the
susceptible plants (those that would have exhibited symptoms of very tiny amounts of 2,4-D) showed no symptoms until we arrived about 50 feet from the claimant’s property. Therefore, it was my opinion the helicopter operator did not get 2,4-D on the claimant’s property. The claim was denied and the claimant subsequently filed a lawsuit. Knowing that 128 grape plants could not bring much money, he and his lawyer came forth with the following allegations: The (now) plaintiff was planning to develop a variety of grapes that would withstand the winter cold and prosper in this area. He had allegedly brought in grape plants from Italy while serving in the Navy or
Chester Roberts Supply Company Merchant Marines (it turned out that these were imported illegally). With the grapes, he was going to develop a wine industry in the valley and the 2,4D had supposedly ruined his operation. The plaintiff and his attorney then claimed that the 2,4-D had caused him to lose a government grant of $850,000. They filed a

lawsuit for $1,500,000. The defense of the lawsuit was under the direction of attorney Fred Begy from Chicago. Fred sent an associate to go with me to the area and re-inspect the property, including the grape plants. There was an appointed date and time that we could go onto the

We also visited and interviewed the neighbors in the area. The impression that we got was not very favorable for the plaintiff. We inspected the grapes at the appointed time, took pictures and made notes. I found and counted 128 places that been prepared for plants, but only about 115 grape plants had been put in. I said to Fred’s associate, “I have my notes, sketches and pictures. You can take me to the airport and I will get off the payroll”. The reply was, “You are not going anywhere. These people will talk to you and they won’t talk to me as freely”. So I stayed until all had been interviewed.

The plaintiff produced a chemical analysis report showing a very high parts per million in grape leaves from the property. We calculated the parts per million (PPM) that would have been found in grass from the pasture immediately after the spraying was done. The PPM in the report was more than three times the amount that would have come from the pasture just after the spraying. After the plaintiff had presented his case, we presented evidence that the lack of symptoms between the two properties eliminated the possibility 2,4-D had drifted from one to the other. Attorney Begy and his associate introduced all of my notes, sketches and pictures into evidence. We also introduced evidence showing the PPM of 2,4-D shown in the analysis report could not have come from the pasture and that the sample submitted to the lab had to be doctored (extra 2,4-D deliberately added to the sample). Another expert also substantiated our opinion. Neighbors testified as to the plaintiff’s character and we were awarded a complete defense verdict. The plaintiff was assessed $13,200.00 in costs, attorney fees, etc. It feels good to win one like this...

Do your bills produce a profit? Due to the escalating fuel prices and other price increases that might occur this year, now is an appropriate time to evaluate your billing system. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until your checkbook has a negative balance to investigate what happened to your business. There are many ways to charge for aviation services. Some billing methods combine different types of charges to determine the final bill. Some possibilities include: $/Statute Mile, $/ Nautical Mile, $/Take Off, $/Landing, $/Day, $/Elapsed Time, $/Flying Hour, $/Trip, $ Positioning, $/Deadhead Statute Mile or Nautical Mile, $/acre, $/pound, $ for Excess Ferry Distance, $
Small Patches, $ Spot Treatment, $/Per Load, $/Flying Hour Fuel Surcharge, etc. Charges may differ depending on the type terrain, weather, day, night, or other special conditions. The type operation usually determines the conventional method of billing. Regardless of the billing method used, the end result must produce revenue greater than expenses in order to stay in business. Does the way you charge produce a profit? Making a profit requires the total billings to be greater than all the fixed expenses plus the variable expenses created by the hourly operation of the aircraft. How do you evaluate your billing system? Accurately evaluating your billing
system requires determining what billing system produces the ROI (Return On Investment) you seek to achieve. Calculating your ROI requires projecting cash flow from the time you purchased the aircraft through the time you sell the aircraft. Using this method is best accomplished with a computer financial model that includes the after-tax profit produced by your business. To get you started on evaluating your billing system, I suggest the old fashion way; use paper and pencil to perform the steps below. Review your expenses over the last several years for each aircraft you operate. Review each extraordinary expense separately and prorate the

total expense so that it makes sense to project an annual fixed or variable hourly expense amount as appropriate. Determine a total annual fixed expense and variable hourly expense for projection purposes. Review your revenue over the same time period. Determine the average revenue per hour for the total number of hours flown during the time period reviewed. The number of hours flown should include flying hours due to maintenance trips, test flights, training, positioning, etc. The hours flown when no revenue was collected should be included in the total hours flown because you pay when the aircraft is flown for any reason. Add the total annual fixed and variable expenses (for the annual hourly utilization) to determine the total annual expenses. Divide the total annual expenses by the annual hours flown to calculate your average cost per hour. Compare your average revenue per hour to your average cost per hour. Hopefully, the average hourly revenue is greater than the average hourly cost. Now you have a quick picture of the net on an hourly basis. To improve your profit, you should cost out each job. Determine which jobs produce profits and which jobs produce losses. At the completion of each job, divide the revenue received by the hours flown. If the revenue per hour collected is not greater than your average cost per hour then you need to evaluate the billing system for your services. By immediately costing out each job, you will quickly determine a profitable billing system. AircraftCostAnalysis can be used to determine the after-tax ROI that was mentioned earlier. See www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com for the details.

AAU kicks off first leg of excursion 2012 Editor’s Note: It is amazing how things have changed in the last 20 years. Graham is now a standard “fixture” at the AgAir Update offices. We both have an IFR rating, compared to our excursion 20 years ago. And, thank goodness, we travel with GPS! Please forgive the lack of pictures. Twenty years ago, the photos were not digital and we simply don’t have access to them any longer. Besides, you wouldn’t recognize the guilty ones in the article. The exception is the one photo with Graham and me by the C-182. It has been perched on my desk for the last wonderful 20 years.

A trip through nine states visiting nine ag aviation operations in a Cessna 182 piloted by none other than yours truly. Saying this was an excursion is an understatement at the least. I have always been a fair weather (very fair weather) pilot. Like most ag pilots, I’m sure, I don’t like to get out of the county, much less most of the way across the United States and back. I have always flown with the philosophy, if you can’t see in front of you, don’t go! Admittedly, the distance in front has varied to some degree over the years, depending on the need to

Georgia with the pick-up of the Cessna 182 aircraft. Good friends, Steve Coker and Ken Edmondson, owners of the C-182, allowed me to lease their aircraft. I say good friends because anyone who will turn loose such a beautiful aircraft as this one for nine days and 25 hours of flight time would have to be good friends. The aircraft was equipped with long range fuel tanks (79 gallons), a loran, ADF, and two nav/com radios. There were some IFR instruments, that I didn’t understand, much less know how to use. Believe me, my experience with cross country flying has usually been with a magnetic compass and in an ag plane. The loran worked for about fifty miles then went amiss. I never turned on the ADF, and used the nav/com only to know when I crossed the north/south radials of the VOR. We avoided all controlled areas. We were complete snobs and didn’t talk to anyone on the radios. I realize many of you are thinking, “What an idiot”. But I also know many of you understand exactly what I am referring. It wasn’t until we were running into some scuddy weather and I tried to call flight service, when I was advised by FSS of the neatest radio frequency, Flight Watch

sod strip runs north and south. Mike had warned the strip would be soft, but OK. They had been busy for the past thirty days working rice. The rainfall had been so great during the past few days the strip was wearing down. We who have worked from sod strips know all about that! Mike operates two Air Tractors, an AT-301 and an AT-502. Much to my surprise, I discovered Mike often flies the AT-301, while his pilot, Frank Fryery, pilots the AT-502. Stephanie, Mike’s wife, explained to me it was the only way to keep a good pilot. She went on to tell me the operation needed to keep the AT-502 in the air as much as possible during the busy spraying day. This meant that Frank flying the AT-502 was the best way, since Mike often would have to deal with the growers, along with the other chores involved in running an ag operation. I guess by now you are thinking, Stephanie? Could this be the once Stephanie Humphries of Lanair Corporation, Rosenberg, Texas? Of course. Only now Stephanie is a Gallman. She has worked around ag pilots for so long, she finally had to marry one of them. Mike and she got married last July, 1991. She has since opened the Louisiana branch of Lanair in

on 122.00. I told you it had been a long time since I flew general aviation. Graham got out of school on June 5th, Friday. We made the two hour drive to Valdosta and spent the night at the local Holiday Inn. The next morning we drove the remaining thirty miles to Quitman to board the C-182. Ken Edmondson, past vice president of the NAAA, met us at his operation. He had the aircraft clean and ready to go. Flight Service said a line of rain and thunderstorms were between us and Bunkie, our first stop. Oh well, may as well head out and go until we couldn’t go any further. This was the leg of the trip, 515 miles, that the loran gave up and I discovered Flight Watch. If you have never flown in the South during the summer, you owe it to yourself to try it someday. It can get real hazy, hot, and under the right circumstances rain showers and thunderstorms in all the wrong places. By noon, we managed to wind ourselves through the light rain showers and around the thunder bumpers. After crossing the mighty Mississippi, the clouds broke open and we soon found Bunkie, Louisiana. Bunkie Flying Service, owned and operated by Mike Gallman, is located about two miles south of Bunkie. The

Bunkie at Mike’s base of operation. When a customer of Lanair calls the Lanair 800 number, they have a choice to be transferred to the Louisiana branch or to talk with Vanessa Johnson at the Rosenberg office. The Louisiana branch is every bit Lanair as Rosenberg. Customers still have the quick and dedicated service they received when Stephanie was in Rosenberg. Only now the ag operator can be better served by the diversification of Lanair. Each office is connected by phone and fax. If a aircraft part is not available at one branch, the other branch makes sure the customer gets what he needs. Stephanie has been much too valuable to this industry to have lost her to an ag operator. Now she has her ag pilot and we have a better and improved Lanair. But back to our first stop, Bunkie Flying Service. Bunkie Flying Service began in 1983. Mike opened the flying service with two AT-301 planes. In April of 1990, he traded one of the AT-301 aircraft with Lane Aviation for a new AT-502. Bunkie Flying Service currently operates from the Red (James Cooper) Smith airstrip bought from Mrs. Virginia Smith, wife of Red. Major crops treated in Bunkie are rice, cotton, sugarcane, soybeans, corn and
milo. Rice makes up about 50% of the flying. Bunkie Flying Service will treat rice four to five times a year. Stam is flown on for weed control at ten gallons per acre. Two or three applications of 46% urea is applied at rates from 100 pounds per acre to 200 pounds per acre. All of the rice work is flagged by the farmer. Mike handles scheduling by the hour. The grower is told the time to be in the field and the Air Tractors are there within 15 minutes of the pre-arranged time. Mike, over the years, has become able to accurately schedule application jobs throughout the present day and the next day. Equipment coordination and reliability are critical aspects for this kind of scheduling. He knows the capabilities of the aircraft and ground crew. Rice planting is also done by aircraft. In the bayou country of Louisiana, many of the rice fields also serve as crawfish “fields”. After the rice is harvested in the fall, the fields are flooded. The crawfish begin emerging from boroughs several feet in the ground. The crawfish are harvested throughout the winter until May. In May rice seed is flown over the flooded crawfish “fields”. At this time of the year the crawfish begin to return underground for the

summer months. This permits a unique working relationship for farming crawfish and rice in the same field, year-round. The other half of Bunkie Flying Service spraying is 20% cotton, 15% sugarcane, and 15% soybeans and milo. The cotton work is determined largely by the amount of rainfall, limiting the farmer’s ground machines. The sugarcane is a three-year rotational crop. The cane is planted from seed the first year. Mike and Frank make about two insect applications and one Polado (Roundup like product labeled for sugarcane) application the first of September. The Polado is applied to stop the growth of the cane, thereby increasing its sugar content. A word of caution would be not to overlap, says Mike. The cane is cut the first year and the stubble remains. The following two years the cane grows from the stubble. After the third year the stubble is disked in and a new crop, such as soybeans, is planted. Bunkie Flying Service starts their flying season in February with some fertilizing on wheat and winds up the season in the fall with the Polado applications on sugarcane. While the AgAir Update Excursion Team, Graham and I, was at Bunkie
Flying Service, Mike and Frank were up to their ears in work. It had been raining for the past several weeks, causing applications to be made under marginal conditions, fog in the mornings and thunderstorms in the evenings. Mike apologized for not having the time to spend with us. We told him we had rather see him working than spending time with us moping over no work! Saturday evening, after a long day in the saddle, Mike came home, cleanedup and the four of us went to Lafayette to try out the Cajun cooking. The next morning Mike headed back for another day at the airstrip and Graham and I prepared for the next leg of our excursion, a long 685 miles west to Plains, Texas. More thunderstorms were forecast for the Dallas/Fort Worth and Waco area, just our luck. And it was going to be all up hill, the elevation in Bunkie was 39 MSL, while Plains was over 3,900 MSL. 1992 Editor’s Note: Next issue watch for the future portions of the First Annual AgAir Update Ag Operation Excursion, when we visit Mike Cobb at Plains, Texas and Aero Tech Sales in Clovis, New Mexico, and others.

NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA096* Date: January 20, 2012 Location: Brawley, CA Aircraft: Arrow Falcon Exporters OH-58C Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On January 20, 2012, about 1900 Pacific standard time, an Arrow Falcon Exporters, Inc., OH-58C helicopter sustained substantial damage during takeoff when its main rotor mast fractured near Brawley, California. The pilot was not injured. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the aerial application flight. No flight plan had been filed. The helicopter was attempting a departure when the event occurred. The owner of the company stated that the aircraft was performing outlying

operations and was operating off the back of a truck. The helicopter had just been refueled and loaded with applicant. When the pilot pulled up on the collective to begin the takeoff, the main rotor mast fractured. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA103* Date: February 05, 2012 Location: Yellow Pine, ID Aircraft: Rockwell International S-2R Injuries: 1 Uninjured. While landing at a remote snowcovered airstrip with about 350 gallons of fluid in the airplane’s hopper, the pilot touched down at too great of a descent rate. The airplane bounced back into the air, and then touched down again on the packed snow surface. As
the airplane began to slow and the airplane’s weight began to be transferred from the wings to the landing gear, one main landing gear attach fitting, which had been damaged during the initial hard touchdown, allowed its associated gear leg to partially collapse. The partial collapse of the landing gear resulted in the airplane veering to the right, whereupon the right wing impacted the snow bank along the side of the runway. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA112* Date: February 14, 2012 Location: Yellow Pine, ID Aircraft: Rockwell International S-2R Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he made a normal touchdown in the tailwheel
equipped airplane onto the centerline of the snow packed runway. Approximately halfway down the runway, the pilot reversed thrust in an effort to slow the airplane down. Shortly after entering reverse, the airplane veered approximately five degrees to the right. The pilot applied left brake and rudder to correct the turn; however, there was limited braking action on the runway surface and the airplane continued to the right. About three quarters down the runway, the airplane struck an ice chunk and the right main landing gear collapsed. The airplane’s right wing was substantially damaged. The pilot reported no mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operations.

NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA115* Date: February 22, 2012 Location: Farmington, CA Aircraft: Texas Helicopter OH-13E/M74 Injuries: 1 Serious. On February 22, 2012, about 1125 Pacific standard time, a Texas Helicopter Corporation OH13E/M47 was substantially damaged under unknown circumstances while conducting an aerial application run on an agricultural field in Farmington, California. The pilot received serious injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no FAA flight plan was filed for the flight.
According to the pilot and the assistant who loaded the chemical payload, the helicopter had been working the local fields since about 0830 that morning, and had applied about 13 loads. The helicopter lifted off to begin another spray run after reloading by the assistant, who then turned his attention elsewhere. Shortly thereafter, he heard the sounds of the helicopter crashing, and turned to look, but he did not witness the accident. He ran to the accident site, assisted the pilot, and summoned for help. The helicopter was highly fragmented, with a debris

field that measured a few hundred feet square. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) information indicated that the pilot held a commercial pilot certificate with a rotorcraft-helicopter rating, and a private pilot certificate with airplane singleengine land and instrument ratings. His most recent FAA second-class medical certificate was issued in August 2011. He was the previous owner of the operator. The helicopter was certificated in 1977, and was equipped with a Lycoming VO-540 series piston engine. The 1155 automated weather observation for Stockton Municipal
Airport (SCK), Stockton, California, located about 9 miles west-southwest of the accident site, included variable direction winds at 3 knots; visibility 9 miles, clear skies; temperature 15 degrees C; dew point 8 degrees C; and an altimeter setting of 30.25 inches of mercury. NTSB Identification: *CEN12LA236* Date: April 09, 2012 Location: Lakin, KS Aircraft: Ayres Corporation S2R-T15 Injuries: 1 Serious. On April 9, 2012, at 0930 central
daylight time, an Ayres model S2R-T15 airplane was substantially damaged when it collided with a tower guy-wire during an aerial-application flight near Lakin, Kansas. The pilot sustained serious injuries. The pilot reported that he had the tower in sight as he maneuvered back toward the field being sprayed. He stated that the airplane began to “shutter”, as if entering an aerodynamic stall, during the turn toward the field. He reportedly reduced elevator input, in an attempt to recover from the aerodynamic stall, as he continued the turn to avoid the tower. The right wing collided with a tower guy-wire before the airplane collided with terrain. The closest weather observing station was at the Garden City Regional Airport (KGCK), located about 25 miles east of the accident site. At 0930, the KGCK automated surface observing system reported the following weather conditions: wind 160 degrees at 7 knots; visibility 5 miles with mist; scattered clouds at 800 feet above ground level (agl) and an overcast ceiling at 1,500 feet agl; temperature 13 degrees Celsius; dew point 12 degrees Celsius; altimeter setting 30.14 inches of mercury.

From seeds to the air by Bill Lavender Fifty-two years ago, Sr. José Parizotto Beé and his wife, Ernestina Zen, bought a 50-hectare farm near the small town of Tapejara, Brazil. At the time, Sr. Beé was driving a truck. He liked the area and after buying a farm, started

raising wheat, corn and soybeans for seed production. He formed his family operated business, Sementes Beé, producing quality seeds. In 1982, his two sons, José Carlos and Claudio and daughter, Luciano, joined the company. Twenty years later, Sementes Beé saw a need to own an Ipanema to spray their crops. After their neighbors saw the Ipanema spraying and knew of the high quality of seeds the company produced, they asked for their crops to be treated, as well. From this came the formation of AgroFly Aviação Agrícola. Today, AgroFly operates five Ipanemas, four EMB-201s and one EMB-202, from three main bases, Tapajera, Vavaria and Passo Fundo, about 50 km apart. AgroFly is one of a group of three aviation companies owned by the Beé family and Eduardo Rocha that include SupportFly and FlyLog. SupportFly is a newly formed maintenance company that services both general and agricultural aircraft. It is based at the Passo Fundo
(L-R) José Carlos, Weligton Renato/technician, Paulo Renato/flight coordinator and Eduardo Rocha, general manager of AgroFly at Tapajera.

AgroFly mainly treats corn, wheat and soybeans with herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in the rolling hills of Tapejara and Passo Fundo. About 90% of the flying is done with eight MicroSpin rotary atomizers per aircraft at a rate of 15 liters/ha. One of AgroFly’s Ipanemas is outfitted with Micronair rotary atomizers. The company is in the process of comparing the differences in the two types of rotary atomizers.

typically fly about 400 hours each during a season. The 15l/ha rate has been selected by AgroFly based on research done by the University of Passo Fundo. Eduardo’s wife, Dr. Daisy Costa, is a professor and researcher at the University. Her work includes comparing the effectiveness of the aircraft versus ground machines. Each year, she helps host a farmer’s
field day with demonstrations and tours of test plots of seed plantings and chemical applications. AgroFly’s five Ipanemas typically fly about 400 hours each during a season. Five pilots are employed with Eduardo as a back-up pilot. The Ipanemas have a mixture of GPS units that include an Ag-Nav Guia, Hemisphere M3 and Lite II. The pilots are proficient with each unit. AgroFly recently bought its EMB202 outfitted with the Hemisphere M3 and an Intelliflow flow control unit. This year’s success of the Intelliflow suggests the other aircraft will soon have flow control units. AgroFly Aviação Agrícola is part of a multi-aviation, family owned group of companies. With its roots starting in the seed business, the quality of service the Beé family has offered for 52 years carries through, lending AgroFly to be a successful Brazilian ag-aviation company.

Consider this advice, don’t become a statistic Human factors are involved in every aviation accident. In some cases these factors cause the mishap and in other case they can save the day. • Do not leave yourself without a backup plan to make sure you can get the job done without getting boxed into a corner with now way out. • Get enough rest. Pilot fatigue degrades performance. If you are tires, stop flying and take a short
“power nap”; it can make a big difference. • Eat well and do not become dehydrated. Avoid alcohol. The aftereffects of alcohol can degrade performance beyond eight hours. • Recognize external pressures such as loss of a loved one, marital or financial difficulties or business pressures that can make your work unsafe. • Do not fly if you are ill. Reassess
yourself daily, Know when to say no. Do not risk your life, your aircraft, your business for one flight. • Ask your doctor if it is safe to fly while using prescription or nonprescription medications. • Develop basic safety rules form the experience and wisdom or yourself and others. • Do not allow short-cuts or expediency to draw you away from your personal safety rules.
• If you work for a company and you see something unsafe, speak up. You may save a life. • If you work alone, learn to remind yourself of the importance of safety. Picture a loved one before every flight. • If you have years of experience, try to pass along your wisdom to new pilots and avoid complacency. Attend the PAASS program. Learn from others and share your experiences.
