Scott Kinzer and I discuss the advantages of the Cascade Pressure Cowl.

After many months of planning and design, at the end of April, AgAir Update launched its all new web site, agairupdate.com. We had been leading up to the launch by strategically positioning ourselves with the introduction of AAU’s Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as my blog site. A visit to agairupdate. com will intrigue you with its new modern look and superior functionality. The classified section is searchable, completely redesigned to be easier to read and you can upload your classified listings. You can search for previously published articles by key word, author, title, etc. Of course, you can renew or subscribe online. You can even download ag-aviation “wallpaper” for your computer screen. Probably the most exciting new feature is the forum with its five subcategories. There’s even an interactive calendar where you can view dates and information about upcoming events, including where AAU will be in the future. When Graham, my son, came back to work with us, one of the first things he told me was our web sites, eEditions and databases were sick. He insisted they be revamped in the broadest sense of the word. At first glance, one may not think that to be too big of a deal, but I can’t count the months of effort (and money) it took to get where we are today with those projects.

New web site, social media; Where’s my newspaper? I’ll be the first to admit, I didn’t see the business value in social mediums like Facebook and Twitter. I’ve been proven wrong, again! Graham proved to me last fall the benefits of changing printers for AAU’s new look. I now realize how effective a Facebook and Twitter page can be in that these pages permit real time notifications. The printed edition of AgAir Update is mailed once a month, while our eEdition email is sent twice a month. Obviously, things occur that the industry needs to know about between those times, not to mention being reminded of events that have been already published in our print and eEditions, but may have been forgotten. With a Facebook or Twitter page, you can set it to notify you whenever AAU makes a post, or you can just check it at some predetermined interval. Facebook/ Twitter users already know this. I’m writing to those of us, including me, who refuses to participate in social media. Look at it from another viewpoint; it’s not about having friends on Facebook or following someone on Twitter. It’s about getting a prompt that says the spray clinic is this week, or some icon in the industry has done something of immediate interest. Of course, bad news travels faster than it ever has through electronic media.

from the cockpit Let me assure you, AAU’s printed edition will be the complete standalone publication as it has always been. AAU has intentionally designed its Facebook/ Twitter pages to drive the reader to our web site and in turn from there to anticipate the upcoming printed edition of AAU. I invite you to visit our Facebook and Twitter pages. You can do this easily by first visiting our new web site at agairupdate.com, then follow links to wherever you desire to go. As the summer passes, AAU will be continually introducing new features to the web site. Some of the features will be account management for your subscription and classified listing, an enhanced photo gallery, an eStore (AAU items) and other features that will keep AgAir Update your industry resource. Bookmark it today, please. In closing, I simply can’t help myself and must say, “Fly safe.” The 2010 spraying season for the northern hemisphere is upon us. Those of you in the southern hemisphere, I know you are looking forward to a well deserved break from flying ag. Whether you are flying or resting in the upcoming months, think long and hard about this month’s cover feature on the Air Tractor AT-504. Ag-aviation is in a situation where it is needing new pilots with experience, an almost impossible requirement and dilemma. The AT-504 resolves the issue in its entirety. This multipurpose ag-plane will allow an operator to safely mentor a new pilot, while being able to pay for itself by working, whether it be dry or liquid applications, or border patrol. An AT-504 could be the best way for an operator who is looking to retire to do it in a way that is profitable and practical. Read the article to find out more. photo Hello Bill! I have sent you a gig stick of photos I took last week at the Sylvester, Georgia Operation SAFE Spray Clinic. Be on the lookout for them. We are having a blast here in Douglas, Georgia getting this lady back in shape. The aircraft is a Yates Mag Truck (Lycoming IO-540 engine) and belongs to Lance McKinnon (standing on right, me on left). We believe the

aircraft was sabotaged. It looks like some sandblasting dust was put in the fuel tanks. The fuel pump was in poor shape (torn up on the inside). To say a lot of work is required would be quite an understatement. She will be a hard working, good flying lady when we get done with her. Hope to meet you someday! Best, Brian Wallis brianpwallis@gmail.com

Brian; Thanks so much for the great photos! Also, thanks for your article that is in this month’s Leading Edge column. I’m sure our readers will find your adventure with this aircraft interesting, at the least! —Bill

I just read the April issue with great interest, but have a question about Robert McCurdy’s article “Ag turns and gray eagles”. My hair is gray and I have flown a few million acres over the last 35 years, much of them in Air Tractors and Thrushes. I agree with the Air Tractor flight manual in that the use of flaps in the turn is pretty much standard operating procedure with all models of Air Tractors. I have never, however used flaps in the turns in Thrushes, and don’t know anyone who does. The wings are very different between the two aircraft and each have their advantages. Again, I would agree with the Air Tractor POH in that while flaps are an important ingredient in the Air Tractor turn, the amount used depends on many variables. Load, temperature (density altitude), relative wind, length of run and obstacles are a few things that come to mind in determining how

much flaps to use. Too little and you don’t get enough lift, too much and you are going to lose working speed and “bog” the aircraft down. As for Mr. McCurdy’s assertion of using full flaps in the turn, I simply disagree, especially in the Thrush. Using full flaps in the turn with a full load is downright dangerous in my opinion. For anyone, especially a relatively inexperienced pilot, to deploy that much drag in a heavily loaded airplane is not a good idea. Speed is lost and hard to recover and control responsiveness is seriously compromised. It is much better to keep the speed up, especially when loaded. The energy accumulated going across the field is money in the bank that can be “borrowed” in the turn, but you have to get it back and the use of full flaps at any time except landing makes it much harder to do. Pat Kornegay Sun Valley Dusting Company San Benito, TX pat@svatx.com Hello Pat; I agree with you about full flaps in a turn and I’ve only flown Thrushes for a little over 20 years. I’m sure our newly opened forum at agairupdate. com would make this a topic of much discussion. —Bill

take a stand Bravo! On the Tracy Thurman, The public’s perception article I just read in AgAir Update. I am in total agreement that for too long we have “let someone else” pull our weight. It’s time to get up an take a stand. 911 hurt us and we are still wearing the blackeye! I’m on board- let’s man up! Thanks again. I hope everyone takes it to heart. And takes action . super cub bi-planes I suppose you will get several responses from the folks around Stuttgart about the Super Cub bi-planes. Back in the early ‘60s there were a lot of cut back Cubs working rice, so it was natural to want better load hauling ability. As best as I can remember, a man named Bill Dortch working with Chuck Holbert, J. O. Dockery’s son in-law, built several of these. Dortch actually had an STC kit for the installation. Tenney Hartley can probably give a better accounting, since he was starting out about this time. I saw one of these rigs in Hollandale, Minnesota in 1977 when I was changing an engine on a Weatherly so we could get it back to Arkansas. The owner used it to hunt coyotes in the winter. If I remember correctly, the kit was advertised in Flying magazine even in the early ‘70s. Darn, am I getting old? question Hey Doc (Dennis Gardisser), Tried to catch you on FaceBook, but couldn’t, so had to do it the old way. Question: Does that deflector on the tail of some of the planes I see put there to deflect fertilize from “sand blasting” the tail affect the pattern of fertilizing? I have heard it both ways. Please state your opinion or what you have seen in test results. Thanks, David Duch Hazen, Arkansas dduch@aim.com

alligator Just thought I drop you a short note of human interest. I got a call from one of our former students and instructors, Geoff Gamble. He is flying an AT-502 in south Louisiana and told me that he had just done something in the airplane that I probably had never done. As he told the story, he was seeding rice and taking off with a

very heavy load. Half way down the airstrip, a large alligator crawled out to the middle of the runway. As Geoff approached the gator, it stood up on all fours and Geoff bopped him in the head with his left main gear. On returning from the applying load, the 10’ gator was still there and dead as a door-nail. Geoff was correct. I have done a lot of things in my 40 years of ag flying, but I have never hit an alligator. Robert McCurdy Columbia, LA Ramtaildragger@aol.co Robert, Well, that’s a new one to me. Too bad we don’t have a photo! Surely they served up some fine alligator afterwards. Bill

David; The deflector should be at the same angle as the top of the spreader skin. If you try to deflect it down, then there will be high pressure on the bottom of the deflector and low pressure on the top – and the airflow will be upward to the low pressure area – carrying particles with it toward the tail wheel section. Most of the fertilizer blasting usually comes from the gap in the linkage arm gate slots. I suggest that one make sure the slots are sealed with

& with the versatile AT-504 Earn Learn by Bill Lavender Ag-pilots are aging. The consensus is the median age of ag-pilots is quickly approaching 60 years. Who is going to assume the role of tomorrow’s ag-pilots, especially as the aircraft continue to evolve into larger and more powerful ships? In the past, the rite of passage to a turbine powered aircraft was by flying a season or two in a less powerful piston counterpart. Today, only Neiva of Brazil manufactures a piston-powered ag-plane, the Ipanema. An exception would be an occasional AT-401 radial engine Air Tractor. Used piston aircraft are becoming less numerous because they aren’t as sophisticated as modern ag-planes and are aging with high-time airframes. Leland Snow, of Air Tractor, Inc., recognized the ag-aviation industry was in need of a trainer aircraft that closely resembled the ag-aircraft of today. It needed to be turbine powered and had to have the flight characteristics of a popular ag-plane. To be successful, the trainer needed to be able to play a dual role and be a productive ag-plane. The AT-504 Air Tractor meets those criteria exactly.

8

agairupdate.com

The initial design of the AT-504 came about because of the requirements imposed by the Chinese to fulfill a purchase of an ag-plane from Air Tractor. They wanted the aircraft to be side-byside seating to ease the transition of their military pilots into ag-aviation. Snow studied the Australian GA-200 that is a modified Piper Pawnee PA-25 design with an expanded cockpit. Snow’s research involved removing the single seat of an AT502B and replacing it with two identical seats positioned side-by-side in the AT502B’s cockpit to see if the seats would fit. They did. Now, Snow only had to expand the canopy and install dual controls to have a trainer ag-plane that would meet the requirements of the Chinese and his idea for a trainer for U.S. and other worldwide markets. It was the summer of 2008 and Snow knew he could modify the AT-502B to become the AT-504. He wanted it at the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s annual convention in December. Much midnight oil was burned, but the aircraft was on display and Air Tractor was ready to take orders. In two and a half

short years, four AT-504s have been built, while seven have been sold; one went to Australia, another to Indonesia, two are scheduled to be delivered to the Chinese, the other three will find their way to a Lane Aviation customer in Costa Rica and Air Tractor dealers Larry Neal and Harley Curless. During the design of the AT-504 to be an ag-plane trainer and spray plane, Air Tractor also developed the aircraft into a border security surveillance aircraft. In a clean configuration without its spray gear, but with its air-conditioned cockpit that comfortably seats two pilots and a FLIR unit mounted to the firewall that extends into the airstream as needed, the aircraft becomes a highly maneuverable tool for border patrol. Its hopper is converted into a fuel tank that gives the aircraft over 15 hours of range with a cruise speed of approximately 160 knots. With the AT-504 in full production and units rolling off the assembly line, I was invited to visit the factory and conduct an evaluation flight. I could not think of anything I would

like more to do. However, due to lack of insurance, I would be accompanied by Air Tractor test pilot, Troy Vaught. Troy has a gazillion ag-hours and has been with Air Tractor for many years as one of its test pilots, as well as training other Air Tractor test pilots. I had no problem flying with him. It gave me the necessary perspective of how the aircraft handled and felt with another person in the cockpit. Unfortunately, conditions on the day of the evaluation flight were not conducive for me to fly the aircraft loaded. I don’t mind flying a new and strange aircraft at gross weight, but I like to pick my battles and do it when the weather is in my favor. That day a southerly wind was gusting above 20 knots. I can’t envision anyone attempting to spray under those conditions. Regardless, a flight was made with full fuel and empty hopper. I was number four to fly the aircraft that day with Troy. Ahead of me was Flying Tiger Aviation’s turbine transition instructor pilot and contributing writer for AgAir Update, Robert McCurdy. Second and third flights were with Billy Whitfield and his father Tim Whitfield of Fairfield, North Carolina. Billy will begin his second full spray season this year after starting out in a Cessna C-188 and flying most of the season in a PT6A-powered Piper Brave. The Whitfields participate in the PROAIR insurance program, insuring their two AT-402s and turbine Brave. To

place Billy on the AT-402 insurance policy, PROAIR required him to attend the Flying Tiger Aviation’s turbine transition course that is taught in a tandem, dual cockpit Thrush with a PT6A-34AG engine. The three pilots were invited by Air Tractor to fly the AT-504 for their opinions. After Tim Whitfield exited the aircraft, Troy indicated to me from the right side of the cockpit to climb onboard. I think he was very interested in watching me fly for future teasing and goading! The first thing I noticed was the difficulty I had entering the cockpit. The top of the canopy is extended slightly over the bottom of the door frame and there was no wire cutter or handle to grab other than one over the door at the top of the canopy. This leaves the pilot’s body hanging out over a decidedly uncomfortable distance from the ground. There’s got to be a trick to climbing into the cockpit. I was not able to figure it out during my first entry. Seated in the AT-504, the first thing you notice is the excellent visibility. Because the pilot is off-center to the left or right, it allows for full use of the windscreen, as well as a higher position of the seat itself. Other than almost being two of everything, the controls are exactly the same ones found in an AT-502B. The instrument panel is the same, as well. Attention should be paid when using one of the two center rudder pedals, as it is possible to catch the edge of your shoe between the two. Not anything dangerous, but it could be a distraction the first time it happens in a turn. Takeoff is no different from an AT-502B.

The AT-504 is the ideal aircraft to “earn and learn”. It works nicely across the field spraying for dollars, while training at the same time.

In this particular aircraft, it required a little more pressure on the throttle to move it forward. This is because you are moving two quadrants at once. The left side pilot’s quadrant is exactly like the AT-502B and in the same position on the left of the cockpit. The right side pilot’s quadrant is on his right and does not have the fuel and prop control levers. With too many years in a 600 and turbine Thrush, I always find it an adjustment to acclimate myself to the light feel of the controls of an Air Tractor. I tend to over control the aircraft. In reality, light controls are an asset. I just need more time in an Air Tractor to become used to them. Any Air Tractor pilot will find the controls and responses of the AT-504 very

Other than the expanded canopy top, the aircraft’s exterior is the same as the AT-502B.

similar to those of an AT-502B. It is important to understand the role the AT-504 can play in an ag-operation. Leland Snow explained it best, “Bill, let’s suppose an operator is getting older. He really doesn’t have that many options. He could sell out, but we all know it is difficult at best to get more money for the company than the value of the equipment. The ideal scenario is to mentor a young pilot with tailwheel time in the AT-504. The operator can spend countless hours training the pilot while at the same time taking care of his customers’ spraying. In doing so, the operator can become very comfortable with a new pilot’s abilities and at the same time reassure his customers the new pilot is capable of doing the job. Now, the operator has someone he can sell his business to that is capable of retaining the customers and doing a good job safely. “Maybe the operator has a son that he wants to break into the business. It’s

tough on a father to watch his son depart solo with that first load. He wants to be in the aircraft with him. With the AT-504, he can be. As importantly, he can also avoid buying a lesser aircraft that often is the only plane in which the low- or no- turbine time pilot can be insured. He doesn’t need a second aircraft that may not be as safe as he’d like for his son to be flying his first season.” The versatile AT-504 is the answer to many issues. It provides a unique training platform that is hard to beat. While at the same time, it is a high-production agplane. It can also perform other missions outside of a typical flying operation with its border patrol capabilities. The AT-504 is not an experiment, but a known entity modeled from its counterpart, the AT502B. My experience with the AT-504 was another positive logbook entry. There were no surprises. The aircraft flew as advertised. Pilots will find the AT-504 is “the ticket to earn and learn”.

The cockpit of the AT-504 is roomy, even though it is the same size as the AT502B. The windscreen is two-piece and does not affect the view of either pilot that are sitting off to the side of center.

Answering questions about the use of hydrated ethanol fuel in agricultural aircraft by Jeferson Luís Rezende info@inquima.com.br It’s natural to have some questions about use of hydrated ethanol as alternative fuel for the agricultural aviation in Brazil. Therefore, there are several various opinions, so the following is a discussion of its use: • Will the presence of water in hydrated ethanol may damage the engine? The water is present in the hydrated ethanol as a residual substance from the distillation process. The specifications require the water to be electrically neutral, free of ions and other substances. It’s amazing, but water in correct portions, found in hydrated ethanol, increases engine economy and performance. Because of these aspects, hydrated ethanol alcohol fuel is the best fuel for aviation in Brazil.

• Is the hydrated ethanol alcohol corrosive? Use of certificated kits developed from scientific tests, requires a change of parts that may be affected by corrosion and by any abrasive effects of ethanol. These changes prevent possible trouble in the aircraft fuel system. Meantime, use of self modifications, without attention to corrosion aspects, may impose the risk of losing of all the money saved by using hydrated ethanol, in despite of good engine performance. • Is it necessary to have a special hydrated ethanol fuel for aviation? In Brazil, hydrated ethanol alcohol is an appropriate fuel for aeronautical reciprocating engines because it is compatible for this class of engines without the need of additives or chemical changes in the fuel. Originally, its

equivalent octane number was 129, very close to that of high octane aviation fuel. It has the advantage to be also an automotive fuel, using the same distribution system of Brazilian car service stations and at airports under the same governmental specifications. The creation of an aeronautical ethanol could reduce the advantages of hydrated ethanol making it no longer economical. Moreover, hydrated ethanol has a freezing point lower than aviation fuel. There are no problems when flying within the certificated operational envelop of the aircraft. • How to solve problems of possible counterfeit hydrated ethanol? In Brazil, it is possible to find car service stations with counterfeited hydrated ethanol alcohol, using proportions of water in higher quantities

than established by regulations. The water used is often of poor quality and responsible for changes in pH, increasing the electric conductivity and gum deposit formation that will damage the engine in a short time. Problems with corrosion are always found when using fuels of unknown origination. The best way to prevent these problems is to frequently test the fuel with a dens meter and pH tester. • What precautions should be made between seasons? If the plane will be grounded for 15 days or longer, to prevent the effect of corrosion effects, it is recommended to unload all fuel from the tanks and run the engine for a few minutes using aviation gasoline for cleaning and lubricating the internal components of the engine. For longer than three months, it is recommended to use normal engine storage procedures.

leading edge

Funny business in Georgia by Brian Wallis Wallis Aviation Inc. DOUGLAS, GA — On the April 6, 2010, an annual inspection was started on a Cessna Ag Truck with an IO-540 Yates Mag Truck engine conversion. Its owner, Lance McKinnon, wanted to lease the aircraft to an operator for spraying during the 2010 season. That particular operator requested that I annual the aircraft. Not knowing the aircraft, I brought everything with me to the job, including the engine hoist, that unfortunately I would be needing. Lance told the operator he had noticed some “strange things” with the aircraft since he had purchased it after its annual in January 2009. To my surprise, Lance and I spent the better part of a day drilling out screws to remove multiple inspection panels. At

12

$70 an hour shop rate, he was starting to get nervous. We shouldn’t have been drilling out inspection plate screws less than a year since an annual. Lance informed me the airplane had an “interesting history” and that he wanted “every inch” of the aircraft inspected. He told me about problems with the aircraft that could not easily be explained, except through vandalism or worse, sabotage! Lance had only flown the aircraft a couple of hours since buying it. The aircraft’s engine did not seem to be running right. After checking the fuel tanks, he said he found an abrasive material. He cleaned out what he could, which included several teaspoons of this material (sand?) in the gascolator. After removing the few inspection panels we could, we decided to really start digging

into why these strange things were happening. I opened the fuel caps on the aircraft and saw debris littered throughout the rubber bladders. My heart sank. I pulled the fuel spider and the injectors. Three of the six injectors were clogged

and the internal components of the fuel spider were clogged with the same yet unidentified material. The fuel lines were also littered with debris. Other aircraft that had taken on fuel from the local fuel

truck at the same time had not reported any problems. Lance was obviously upset because he knew something was very wrong. Next, I removed the oil screen on the IO-540 and again, my heart sank. The engine was surely only minutes from seizing. The oil screen was so clogged with metal debris that the soldiered seam had burst from the pressure. Later that day, a news van showed up and started asking questions. They wanted to know if what they heard was true. Word was spreading fast, soon phone calls were coming in from hundreds of miles away. It was clear someone was watching and they were nervous. That evening the story broke on local news and Lance’s phone went into overdrive. I asked Lance about the aircraft’s fuel pump. He told me that it had recently returned from an overhaul shop. The shop told him it had never seen a fuel pump torn up like his. I immediately ordered all affected parts confiscated to be held as evidence. Lance wanted the appropriate authorities notified and an investigation ensued. The FAA ordered a halt to any work on the fuel system until an investigator could arrive.

and repairing tubing will not be cheap… nor the overhaul on the prop and lost time dealing with federal investigators. He cannot spray with the aircraft, thus he is not making any money with it. All of this forebodes badly for a person who innocently bought an ag-plane and has been subjected to what appears to be a very unjust outcome.

The oil screen from the IO-540 engine is bulging from being stopped up with debris.

An inspection magnet covered with metal from the IO-540 engine.

As a commercial fixed wing pilot and an AP/IA, I know what makes a plane tick and what doesn’t. Fearing the worst and hoping for the best, I asked some probing questions and found out several other operators in the past, at or near this particular airport, had run into similar strange problems and mysterious events. Not wanting Lance to end up in a burning heap, I probed deeper. He did not want to point fingers or say anything but I persuaded him to come clean.

My jaw hit the floor. I cannot reveal any details, as a federal investigation is ongoing and many people are involved on many different levels. At this point, the engine has been removed and placed in a secure location for further investigation. The rest of the airframe will be gone through with a fine tooth comb. As of today, the mysterious threatening phone calls and harassment has stopped. Lance’s IO-540 is trashed. Replacing the fuel bladders

International Crop Duster’s Day May 27, 2010 by Bobby J. Wheat As International Crop Duster’s Day approaches, I thought I would share a few memories of an old Stearman crop duster pilot of days and years gone by. Early morning came and the acreage board was full of jobs, as the season was in full swing. I began the day with removing the tie-down ropes from the Stearman, checking the oil, wiping the dew from the tiny the windscreen and seat cushions and then slid into the cockpit. After the loader truck driver cleared the oil from the cylinders with a few turns of the prop, he called out, “Contact!” I switched on both magnetos, pushed the mixture forward, gave the old primer a couple of shots and called back, “Contact.” With a hearty leg-swinging pull on the prop, the old 450 fired up, coughed a little smoke and roared to life. After a few minutes of warming up and checking the few working instruments (tach, oil pressure, manifold pressure and

temp gauges), I taxied over to the runway where the loader truck was set up beside a semi-truckload of 80-pound fertilizer sacks. I dismounted from the Stearman, talked with the farmer and got the flagmen lined up on where I’d start the application. We were ready to begin the day’s work. I wiped the green lens in my goggles (AN6140, of course) and put on my old surplus WWII cloth helmet. I tucked the powder puffs over my ears and buckled the strap under my chin, then crawled back in the cockpit and took on my first load of the day. Loaded with 1200 pounds of fertilizer in the stock wing Stearman, I swung the tail around and lined up with the runway. Running up the engine to 1,500 rpm, I checked the mags. Everything was ready to go. As I opened the throttle, I glanced behind to see the prop blast covering the loaders with dust, grass and empty sacks. I knew I was getting a cussing, but that’s

the way it was on some of those narrow strips back then. Roaring down the short strip, the old Pratt & Whitney seemed anxious to get into the air. Pulling the nose up, I got airborne and quickly assumed the flying attitude of a loaded stock-winger. Sometimes you thought you might have to stand up in the seat to see over the nose, but that’s how the old Stearmans flew. Airborne and leveled out, I began to reduce my RPMs and manifold pressure only to find the throttle linkage, (you old timers will remember the tube and bell crank linkage arrangement on the Stearman throttles) jammed in the full throttle position. What a way to start the day. I began a gentle turn back towards the strip and lined up for a full-load landing. I touched down, cut the throttle and heated up the brakes bringing the Stearman to a stop. I taxied back to the loader truck, swung the plane around and cut off the engine. My loader driver knew the routine well and was bringing a screwdriver over to unscrew the zeus fittings and open the cowl. Once inside the cowl, a few minor twists and turns, a little oil on the bearings, the linkage frees up and seems to work properly. We buttoned up the cowl, cranked up and I blasted off once again, somewhat ticked at the lost time. Everything went well and after a while, the 20 tons of fertilizer disappeared from the 18-wheeler and onto the crop. Everything was fine all day until about 3:00 pm. The weather was getting hot, the strips seem shorter, the loads seemed heavier and the sun was hot on my red nose and lips, which were cooked from the sun. (About that time in the season, Stearman pilots look like raccoons, with white around the eyes where the goggles fit and a deeply tanned, deeply blistered nose and lips.) I had prepared to take off with a fresh load of fertilizer for another customer. The flag-boys were already in the field. I’m loaded with gas, oil and fertilizer when I blast off down the dusty strip. I was off the ground and turning toward the field, preparing to ease back on the throttle when, all of a sudden, the

leather prop seal decides it’s time to be replaced. Hot oil sprayed back from the prop, covering my face. Another quick turn toward the strip where I made a hot landing and taxied back to the loader truck and shut her down, oil dripping off everything. This time, I borrowed the farmer’s pick-up and went to my base. I got the mechanic, the prop tools and a new leather prop seal, then headed back to the Stearman. Now, if you’ve ever experienced this situation, you know how oily the Stearman becomes from a blown prop seal. The seal is replaced, the oil wiped off as good as could be and the operations began again. As time and technology evolved, pushpull cables were fitted to the Stearman, solving the stuck throttle linkage problem. Neopreme seals were developed, forever stopping the blown-out, oil in face, leather seals of WWII design. Now, weren’t those the good old days? What could be better than that? Ever had a buzzard come through your prop? International Crop Duster’s Day evolved to honor those pilots who were considered “Crop Duster Pilots”. In those days, we wore our helmets and goggles, with the strap pulled up over the top of the helmet, to the drug store when we had time for a cup of coffee. Folks grinned and in good-natured fun called out to us, “Here comes the raccoon faced duster pilots!” (We never admitted the 2-4-D on our clothes killed their flower and plants.) International Crop Duster’s Day founder Bob Wheat is wondering if anyone might like to join up as a charter member of the International Crop Duster’s Club? A few bucks would get you an ID card, a windshield sticker and maybe something else could come along as well. If anyone’s interested, contact me and let’s talk about it: oldduster@aol.com We might want to have a fly-in on May 29 this year at the Anahuac, Texas airport and spend the day hangar flying. (Anahuac located on the eastern shores of Galveston/ Trinity Bay, or about 65 miles east of Houston.) Nothing spectular, maybe a prize or two. You might even see one of M&M’s or Swopes or Brown Turbines working the rice fields in the area. If anyone’s interested, or has questions, let me hear from you.

Asian citrus psyllid control Florida citrus is big business. Keeping the groves disease free is big business, too. One such disease is Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening disease, caused by the bacteria produced by the Asian citrus psyllid. HLB first showed up in Florida in 2005 and has already wreaked havoc on groves in the state’s southern tier. Because the weather in Florida tends to be dry and cool during late fall and early winter, citrus trees stop producing new growth psyllid need to lay eggs for reproduction. To compensate, adult psyllid feed on mature leaves until new foliage can be produced in the spring, usually in mid to late February. To combat the pest, growers are using what they call a dormant spray, which is a foliar application of insecticide aimed at exterminating the over wintering adult psyllid. The larger the treated area, the greater effect the treatment will have. The cooperative dormant spray efforts for 2008-2009 were conducted via air and ground. Almost 80,000 acres were contracted out for aerial spraying with the balance being done

Psyllid count immediately following and four-five months after dormant sprays. The psyllid population grew by 50% in the aerial block, compared to 83% increase for the ground block and more than 2800% for the untreated block. with ground equipment. The goal was to reduce the psyllid population by 60% using aerial applications. In the only identifiable untreated block, it was found that the pest population had more then doubled. At four to six months after treatment, populations were only up 50%. The untreated block was up 2800%.

As a result, southwest Florida citrus growers have decided it’s in their best interest to apply the dormant spray. Most have already applied one application and plan to do another; 70% of the applications will be done by air. Other options, such as releasing beneficial insects early in the growing season, are being considered as well.

Robert A. McCurdy, Chief Pilot / Flight Instructor Flying Tiger Aviation, LLC, ramtaildragger@aol.com

in my opinion

Truthfulness, etc. Recently I was in a conversation with one of our instructors here at Flying Tiger Aviation, who is also an excellent and active ag pilot. He mentioned to me that he knew of a very low time ag pilot who had landed a seat after billing himself as having 1500 ag hours. Our instructor knew this “newbie” and knew he had lied about his flight time. He also learned that this young man had “balled up” the ag plane he was flying, got fired and was then rehired by another company. What we have is a two-pronged problem; the pilot responds to a situation where the hiring operator now demands more than 1,500 hours of ag time and it may cast an unwarranted dim light on us or any other ag aviation school. What can we, the schools and the operators, do about this situation?

I always tell the new student that if they do really well, they can use me for a reference. If he completes the course, but does not do exceptionally well, they will already know it and probably won’t use the school for a reference. Furthermore, when a prospective employer calls for a reference, good or bad, the school will tell the truth. The school makes a logbook entry on completion of the course and lists the date and total ag time the student has as of that date. Emphasis is made to the student the importance of being completely honest regarding his ag flight time. In my opinion, if the operator is reputable and he needs a pilot, he will respect the applicant’s honesty and may be willing to give him a chance to prove himself, especially if he has a good

Auger uger A Dan an’’s s D Trucks rucks T

recommendation from the school. If students include on their resumes that they are graduates of one of the schools, then the operator should contact the school requesting information on the prospective pilot employee. An email request will give the school time to check their records and talk to the principal instructor before responding to the operator. The operator should closely examine the applicant’s logbook and question him as to the validity of the hours logged. The last and probably the most difficult thing for the school to do is to tell a mediocre student that he might consider looking for another line of aviation employment, like flying for the airlines or corporate aviation where the actual flying is a lot less demanding.

Let the engines tell the story

Speaking strictly for myself, often times during my ag flight instruction, I overlook an item of importance that I took for granted the student already knew, or an item I did not place sufficient emphasis. This is especially true of a student who already has a commercial pilot’s license. A few examples would be the longitudinal axis must be parallel to the centerline of the runway when landing in a crosswind. Or with a wheel landing, when the wheels touch down do not pull back on the stick. Do not let a crosswind pick up the upwind wing after touchdown, or you may end up the ditch. Airspeed and descent angle on short final should always be “on the money,” so that you can always be prepared for landing on a short sod airstrip even when you do have a 4,000’ paved runway in front of you. These are only four examples that come to mind right now. Surely there are many more. But maybe these will help the aspiring “agviator”, as well as the operator and the ag flight schools. And so as always, be safe, have fun and make money!

Simplex receives pma for helipod products PORTLAND, OREGON—Simplex Manufacturing Co. (www.simplexmfg. com) is pleased to announce that it has now received FAA PMA on its newly acquired line of Helipod products, including the new spray system for the Robinson R44 helicopter. Simplex purchased Helipod International in June of 2009 and successfully transferred all of the FAA and other STC’s during the remainder of 2009. Simplex was awarded PMA by the FAA for the Helipod line of cargo pods and spray systems just before Christmas 2009. EASA approval is expected spring of 2010. Manufacturing of the FAA products is now based solely in Portland while the manufacturing of CAA approved products and the development of new Helipod-based products will continue in New Zealand. The first FAA/PMA

cargo pod was delivered to Agrorotores Trabajos Aereos Ltda. of Chile in January. The first R44 spray system built with FAA PMA will be shipped to PTE Systems of Beijing, China later this month. Due to the popularity of the spray systems, Simplex has added extra shifts in order to accommodate the demand for R44 spray systems with deliveries scheduled through June of this year. Founded in 1946, Simplex has built a reputation as a leader in design, manufacturing, and certification of efficient, long lasting, and practical mission equipment for helicopters. Simplex maintains its industry leadership by incorporating proven technology and utilizing high-strength, low-weight composite materials in the design and manufacturing of its systems.

money talk

In determining the question of whether a new or used aircraft should be purchased, the main financial factor is the after-tax cash flow and Net Present Value (NPV) for each option. When you know the after-tax cash flow difference and NPV, you can make the decision of whether the benefits of a new aircraft purchase are worth the investment difference. Two immediate factors impacting a purchase decision are availability and price. When can the aircraft be placed in service? The new aircraft backlogs enjoyed in recent years have shortened as the economy has weakened. Cancellation of new aircraft orders or delayed delivery of new aircraft has

shortened the new aircraft delivery schedule. Purchasing a new aircraft with an acceptable delivery date at a significant discount might be possible in today’s market. Purchasing or trading for a used aircraft is an alternative. Most used aircraft values are depressed and there is a large inventory. After five years, what will be the percentage resale value of the used aircraft you are considering? Due to the depressed market today, the used aircraft might actually appreciate in value. Remember, the resale value has a big impact on total ownership cost. How do the estimated actual dollar values in depreciation differ between the new and used aircraft?

Most important, visit your tax counsel and advisor to confirm the current tax laws concerning accelerated depreciation and the after tax financial impact on your situation. The difference between accelerated depreciation and normal depreciation deserves comment. The total amount that can be depreciated using either method is the purchase price plus sales tax for an outright purchase or the cash difference paid plus the sales tax for a trade transaction. The year in which the depreciation is deducted differs between accelerated and normal depreciation. The total depreciation is the same. The purchase of a new aircraft might offer some of the following benefits. Lower initial capital cost due to a smaller down payment & lower interest rates. A new aircraft may reduce your current tax obligation by using accelerated depreciation not available with used aircraft. New aircraft are more reliable, have higher dispatch rates, use the latest technologies, and have less down time due to parts availability & manufacturer response times. Operating costs are lower due to less unscheduled maintenance, reduced major inspections, warranty benefits, better aircraft support,

and faster return-to-service. In most situations, the total costs of purchasing a new aircraft are more predictable than purchasing a used aircraft. Used aircraft purchase benefits may include the following: A used aircraft purchase may offer a better delivery schedule and lower capital obligations due to an attractive price. The estimated resale value of a used aircraft may be a positive. Used aircraft purchases should consider the status of major upcoming inspections and required component overhauls. Upcoming maintenance costs can add up quickly. Due to the current condition of a business, the tax benefits of a used purchase may be more attractive than a new purchase. To evaluate the financial difference between new and used purchases, calculate the after-tax cash flow of each option. The difference that depreciation and resale values make in the new and used aircraft purchase can be significant. What is the Net Present Value (NPV) of both the new and used after-tax cash flows? AircraftCostAnalysis is a financial model that performs the analysis discussed. See www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com for the details.

the anatomy of

aviation insurance

An insurance nightmare This past winter brought a great deal of snow to the Eastern Seaboard, especially one FBO. An accumulation of 32 inches

of wet snow collapsed a hangar roof onto an estimated $300,000,000 worth of corporate jets with the tail sections of

each jet supporting the damaged roof. Imagine the FBO and aircraft owner’s horror to see these aircraft with their nose wheels in the take off position inside the hangar. While I do not have any information other than what is public knowledge and the investigation is still ongoing, this is such a compelling story that I would like to outline a few of the insurance issues this accident brings forth.

Was it an Act of God? If it is determined that it was an Act of God, each individual aircraft owner’s insurance will pay for the damages to their aircraft in accordance with their individual policy. All deductibles will apply. This includes a pro rata reduction for time compliance components such the engines, props,

All The Parts You Need… in one pass. Compro

rotors, etc. to reflect their remaining useful life. Remember, the insurance company’s obligation is to restore the aircraft to its condition prior to the accident. Additional issues such as loss of use and loss of value will also come into play. Most corporate jet policies will have some limited loss of use and re-imbursement provisions, usually with a waiting period and capped at a certain dollar amount. It will also have a limitation on the size and seating capacity of any substitute aircraft, which should be similar to the damaged aircraft. This could be particularly problematic since these aircraft where unmovable for a long period of time—longer than the usual period of repair or replacement. In an unusual case like this, each

insurance company might make some accommodation as part of the claims process and settlement. Each company has its own personality when it comes to things of this nature. Long-standing relationships are a definite value. It is rare to find loss of value provision in an aircraft policy. Any damage history could significantly reduce the value of the aircraft. With an Act of God declared, the owner has no apparent recourse to recovering this loss unless he can somehow implicate the FBO owner or someone else to gain access to their insurance or assets. In order to determine if this was or was not an Act of God, the claims teams on this investigation will want to answer several questions as to the design and construction of the hangar. Specifically, was the hangar of sound design and construction according to the proper building codes for the use intended? Who was the architect? Is he insured, and so, for how much? Who were the contractor and crew? Did they use proper procedures and methods? What limits of liability insurance do they carry? Was there materiel fault in the steel, rivets and other materials used in construction? Assuming everyone is insured,

each of the parties involved (aircraft owner, FBO owner, building architect, building contractor, building materials manufacturer and supplier and possibly the airport) will be represented by their respective insurance companies or attorneys. Each insurance company has the obligation to either defend their insured against a claim or pay the claim, reserving the right to subrogated against the party each feels responsible for the damage. The only one that can’t be sued is God, but if He has insurance I’m sure someone will try!

Was it a faulty premises? If it is determined that there was a fault in the premises and that the building should have been able to withstand the weight of the snow, it is unlikely the architect or the contractor carries enough liability insurance to meet such a large obligation. It is highly likely that it will fall to the FBO owners insurance as well. An important fact to remember is that the aircraft owner’s insurance is always primary. It is possible they will repair their insured’s aircraft or declare it a constructive total loss, allowing the owner to find a replacement, then subrogate to recover their losses. There is a question as to whether this

could be insured under Premises Liability provision of the insuring agreement, hangarkeepers, or both. The salient question is, “has a bailment occurred?” In other words, did the FBO owner take the aircraft into its care, custody and control, moving them into the hangar? If so, any claim would fall under the hangarkeepers legal liability provisions of the policy, which would trigger any deductibles in the policy. However, suppose that the far end of the hangar was leased to a single company who moved their own aircraft in and out of the hangar. Since the FBO would likely

not have taken possession of the aircraft to move them inside, a bailment was not made and the insurance would likely fall under the premises liability provision of the policy as a faulty premises. One hypothetical twist—what if the FBO owner was the contractor or involved in construction of the hangar in some way? How would that affect the application of the provisions of the Airport General Liability policy to an accident? The best I can determine is that there should not be any exclusion in the FBO owner’s General Liability policy, which would prevent the policy from paying the claim. That said,

each policy of the different insurance companies from which an FBO could purchase insurance is different. As with any question that falls in the grey area, the issues will be discovered in claims investigation where final determination could be in a court of law. Whatever the outcome, it is the potential for disasters like this that should give pause to every FBO owner or operator when determining the level of liability insurance they want and need to carry. It is also a reminder for every aircraft owner to always insure his aircraft to its full value. In this tough economic climate,

there have been instances where aircraft owners have allowed their insurance to lapse to save money because the aircraft was simply sitting in a hangar unused. With your current insurance in place, how would you fare if this disaster happened to you?

Penetrating oils compared Machinist’s Workshop magazine tested various penetrants for break- out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants, with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment. The ATF-Acetone mix was a “home brew” mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note that the “home brew” was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group has mixed up a batch and use it with equally good results. Notice also that “Liquid Wrench” is about as good as “Kroil” for about 20% of the price. WE DO GOOD WORK!

by David Glessner Texas farmers and ranchers expected to battle wildfires, drought and pests, but now the EPA is demanding they also wrestle the crushing costs of greenhouse gas regulations-rules which stem from flawed findings. In an effort to stop an unfair fight before it begins. Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, along with Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, recently filed a challenge to an EPA ruling that threatens the livelihoods of Texas farmers and ranchers, hurts consumers’ budgets and hinders the health of the state’s $100 billion agriculture industry. “ Until sound science prevails over political science, I intend to stand by our agriculture producers and fight thin unfounded and detrimental burden.” Commissioner Staples said. Last December, the EPA ruled that greenhouse gases are harmful to the

environment and human health, and thereby warrant costly regulations under the Clean Air Act. Despite a lack of sound, scientific support and citing the Untied Nations climate-change claims that have been refuted and reported to be fraudulent, the EPA now plans to regulate greenhouse gases, which will cause a ripple effect that will drive many out of business; reducing the amount of food produced; and increasing food prices for consumers. While the subject of climate change is certainly worth exploring and open to debate, the Texas Department of Agriculture contends the EPA’s claims are premature, irresponsible and detrimental to the hard-working Texas agriculture producers who provide the safest, most abundant and most affordable food supply in the world. “97% of land in Texas is privately owned and more that 80% of land in the state is in some form of agricultural

Ag pilots recognized for environmental stewardship by Trey Cooke Six agricultural pilots were recently recognized for exemplary environmental stewardship. Selected pilots were ranked highest among their peers based on criteria established through the Applicators Conserving the Environment (A.C.E.) Pilot Program. Those pilots

selected for recognition include Skeet Edwards of Edwards Flying Service in Leland, David Habig of Dixie Dusters in Itta Bena, Gerald Jones of Valley Air Applicators in Indianola, Billy Ray Kent of Snow Brake Air Service in Greenwood, Kelly Peeler of Producers Flying in Yazoo City, and Chuck Travis of Cottonwing Air

in Indianola. Glenn Holloway, a member of the A.C.E. Pilot Program Steering Committee and Drew, Mississippi based ag pilot, pointed out that “many pilots take additional, voluntary steps to ensure that they have no environmental impact.” Holloway continued, “The A.C.E. Pilot

Program now affords us the opportunity to identify the best pilots among us in their efforts to protect our natural resources.” The A.C.E. Pilot Program was developed to recognize top environmental stewards in the ag aviation industry and to incentivize other pilots to become better stewards. Those organizations involved in developing, administering and validating the program include CropLife America, Delta Council, Delta F.A.R.M., Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association (MAAA), Mississippi Agricultural Industry Council, Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, Monsanto, Southern Crop Protection Association, Syngenta, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. All licensed aerial applicators in Mississippi who were members of MAAA in 2009 and had no proven drift violations within the past 24 months were eligible to participate in the A.C.E. Pilot Program. Each participant completed a questionnaire that documented his or her experience, track record and voluntary environmental stewardship efforts. Mark Kimmel, MAAA President, presented each A.C.E. Pilot with a plaque and a cash award for $1,500.00 at the recent MAAA annual convention in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. Pilots will also receive a sign for their place of business to recognize this achievement. Contact Trey Cooke at 662-686-3370 for additional information regarding the A.C.E. Pilot Program. wing and a prayer

Christian’s spiritual warfare “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers

of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 1:10-12). A spiritual battle is being fought on this earth between the powers of God and the powers of Satan. This spiritual battle cannot be fought with

physical weapons, the battle lies in the realm of the spirit, and Christians must arm themselves with spiritual armor and spiritual weapons—worldly and fleshly weapons have no power in this spiritual battle. Christians who don’t prepare themselves spiritually will be overcome by the temptations of their flesh, the world, and Satan. Christians must put on the full armor of God and use God’s spiritual weapons to defeat the schemes of the devil. Christians need to realize that they will be tempted by Satan’s demonic forces! At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry Satan tried to get Jesus to turn away from trusting His heavenly Father. Every time Satan tempted Jesus, He answered Satan with the Word of God—God’s most powerful spiritual weapon (Matthew 4.1-11). Jesus called Satan the prince of this world and Paul called Satan the god of this world. Most of the governments of this world are ruled

by satanic powers, and these governments will use every weapon they can think of to destroy the faith of Christians. Jesus said, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you” (John 15:18-19). This satanically controlled world is going to get worse and worse for Christians. Christians have the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit to help them live a godly life in this wicked world, but that doesn’t keep Christians from being tempted by their flesh, Satan’s demonic forces, and the evil worldly systems. Even though Satan masquerades as an angel of light and his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14-15), God’s Holy Spirit gives Christians the spiritual power to overcome these evil

forces. “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). If Christians will allow the Holy Spirit to rule their life they will not be led astray by the temptations of Satan. Satan is continually prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8-9). The Bible is the only place on this earth that tells us about God’s spiritual armor and weapons. Even though Christians live in this world, they cannot fight their spiritual battles with worldly weapons. Christians must use God’s spiritual armor and weapons because only God’s power has the ability to demolish Satan’s demonic forces (2 Corinthians 10:4). Using worldly weapons to fight a spiritual war is foolish. Worldly weapons cannot harm or destroy an evil spiritual force that cannot be seen, cannot be felt, and cannot be heard! Worldly weapons have no affect on demonic forces that have no physical body. Sort of like trying to shoot down an F-16 at 40,000 with a BB gun while standing on the ground. But even this example falls short of the foolishness of trying to fight spiritual battles with worldly weapons. To understand the power of spiritual forces let’s look at some spiritual battles that are spoken of in the Bible. The Bible says that an angel of the Lord killed

185,000 men in one night (2 Kings 19:35). Although this was one of God’s angels, demonic forces have similar power. God allowed Satan to use evil people and the forces of nature to destroy Job’s family and possessions (Job 1:8-19). Daniel was fasting and praying, and seeking spiritual understanding from God. God sent an angel to answer Daniels prayer, but one of Satan’s demons resisted God’s angel for twenty-one days. The battle was so fierce that God sent the angel Michael to help out the good angel (Daniel 10:1-14). If demons have this kind of power against God’s angels, you can be sure that humans have no power within themselves to fight against these evil spiritual forces. The king of Aram was setting up traps for the Israeli army. But every time he set up a trap Elisha would tell the king of Israel where the traps were. The king of Aram thought there was a spy in his army, but a servant told him that God was revealing his plans to Elisha. So the king of Aram sent his army to capture Elisha. The next morning Elisha’s servant saw that he and Elisha were surrounded by Aram’s army. Elisha asked the Lord to show his servant whose army was the greatest. The Lord showed the servant that Aram’s army was surrounded by an army of God’s angels.

God’s angels struck Aram’s army blind and Elisha took the army captive (2 Kings 6:123. God’s spiritual forces may be invisible to our eyes, but they are always working for a Christian’s good (Romans 8:28). Peter tells us that God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through God’s spiritual gifts He has given us His great and precious promises, and through God’s spiritual weapons we can participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires (2 Peter 1:2-4).

Without a good knowledge of the Bible it is impossible for a Christian to fight a successful spiritual battle against their sinful flesh, this evil world, and Satan’s demonic powers. The schemes of the devil cannot be successfully overcome without understanding and applying God’s spiritual forces in our daily life. David wrote, “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). Christians are spiritually defenseless without God’s Word in their minds and hearts! We will talk about specific spiritual weapons next time.

General aviation industry prepares for an unleaded future by Chris Dancy Frederick, MD – The EPA has formally begun the regulatory process required by the Clean Air Act that may ultimately result in standards mandating the industry’s transition to unleaded aviation gasoline (avgas). The EPA has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) which is a key opportunity for the general aviation (GA) community to

provide comment regarding this possible new environmental standard and into the development of a plan for identifying, evaluating, and ultimately transitioning to an unleaded fuel. This is particularly important given the technical complexity and safety implications of removing lead from aviation gasoline since there is not a high-octane replacement unleaded avgas available today that meets the

requirements of the entire GA fleet. In the ANPR, the EPA recognized the complexity involved in identifying and safely transitioning to an alternative gasoline, stating, “Converting in-use aircraft/engines to operate on unleaded aviation gasoline would be a significant logistical challenge, and in some cases a technical challenge as well.” The agency also acknowledged that a joint effort will be critical in the likely case

that engine modifications will need to be developed and certified. The EPA continued, “Given the potentially large number of affected aircraft and the potential complexities involved, a program affecting in-use aircraft engines would need careful consideration by both EPA and FAA and the two agencies would need to work together in considering any potential program affecting the in-use fleet.” The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the Experimental Aviation Association (EAA), the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), the National Air Transportation

Association (NATA), and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) have devoted more than 20 years of research and development to identifying a viable alternative to the 100 “low lead” avgas formulation used today by most piston-powered aircraft. The industry stakeholders look forward to continuing their work with the EPA and the FAA on establishing a realistic standard to reduce lead emissions from GA aircraft along a transition timeline which balances environmental benefit with aviation safety, technical feasibility and economic impact upon the GA industry.

Wounded warriors: they’ve got heart...they need wings Editor’s note: Most ag-pilots are becoming very busy with their season, but the Veteran’s Airlift Command is an ongoing service that many ag-pilots should consider participating in during their off-season. As citizens, we owe an enormous debt to those who have sacrificed for our country. It’s a debt that is impossible to repay, but that won’t stop us from trying. The Veterans Airlift Command (VAC) provides free air transportation to wounded warriors, veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots. Presently, the priority is on the veterans of Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). As capacity allows, VAC’s mission will expand to serve veterans of other conflicts. Due to aircraft and pilot availability, we prioritize our missions like this: 1. Transport related to serviceconnected medical needs of service

We’ve Been Doing This Business Since Yeager was Punching Holes in the Sky Chuck Yeager didn’t stop with the braking of the sound barrier in 1947. He went on to test dozens of experimental aircraft in the skies over California’s high desert. As American heroes go, there’s none finer. And if you’re looking for a hero in the ag aviation industry, look no further than your knowledgeable friends at Mid-Continent Aircraft. We’re your authorized dealer for Thrush, Ag Cat, Cessna and Weatherly. So whether it’s ag-craft sales, service, parts or insurance, Mid-Continent will do whatever it takes to keep you flying — so your revenues can keep climbing sky high. So trust the worldwide leader in agricultural aviation. We’ve been doing this business since 1948. members and veterans of Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. 2. Transport for family members visiting the service members and vets of Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom at medical facilities, as well as friends who accompany those family members. 3. Transport related to serviceconnected medical needs of veterans of other conflicts. 4. Transport for family members visiting the vets of other conflicts at medical facilities, as well as friends who accompany those family members. 5. Transport related to any medical needs of any veterans. Flying VAC missions lets pilots accomplish something important while maintaining their proficiency. Because the focus is on wounded warriors, veterans and their families, VAC recruits pilots who will represent them with dignity and professionalism. This helps families feel safer and more

In April 2009, VAC took six amputees from Washington, DC to Boston to participate in the Boston Marathon as members of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded confident on flights, as many of them have never flown in smaller aircraft. The VAC generally schedules two instrument-rated pilots on each mission. This enhances safety and it lets the volunteer pilots share the workload and enjoy camaraderie. Pilots can volunteer for a few flights per year or several per month, depending on their schedules.

Volunteering the use of an aircraft is an outstanding way for businesses to demonstrate their patriotism and put available resources to work for a good cause. For companies involved in fractional aircraft ownership programs, it’s an excellent use of unused flying hours. Many of the plane owners who volunteer with VAC are also pilots

China releases biotech rice, bars biofuel CHURCHVILLE, VA— China says short world grain supplies have persuaded it to release biotech rice nationwide, ensuring the broadest-ever use of genetic engineering in a food crop. Chinese plant breeders say biotech crops are certain to produce higher yields, forestalling the need to finance costly rice imports for China’s billion-plus consumers. To further protect its grain supplies, China has also been discouraging grain-based ethanol for the last two years. Chinese demand for grain ethanol—mainly from corn—had threatened to inflate prices for China’s rice and livestock products as world oil prices hit record levels. Western biofuel mandates have more than doubled world grain prices since 2005. Corn costs have soared from less than $2 per bushel to more than $7, before settling recently at about $5.50 per bushel. Pork, poultry, beef, and milk producers are still warning of further food price inflation ahead due to biofuels mandates. The Chinese have already developed genetically engineered rice strains with bred-

in pest and disease resistance. They’re also experimenting with new nitrogen-efficient rice that needs only half as much fertilizer to get top yields. The new rice thus costs much less to grow, and emits far less greenhouse gas per ton of rice produced. They also say biotech rice “escapes” will not be a problem, since they’ve pre-programmed the rice to be hyper-sensitive to a particular herbicide. China already permits the growing of genetically engineered peppers, tomatoes, and papaya, and much of its huge cotton crop is genetically modified to resist pests. Biotech has overcome the deadly ringspot virus, which severely hampers papaya production in much of the world, and provided virus resistance for tomatoes and peppers. Another genetic modification permits Chinese tomatoes to survive the longer shipping delays caused by the poor Chinese roads and lack of refrigeration. The nitrogen-efficient biotech rice being tested by the Chinese emerged at Canada’s University of Alberta, as breeders were seeking drought-tolerant crops. Someone forgot to fertilize the seeds in

the greenhouse, but one set of plants grew vigorously anyhow. They had discovered a new and more efficient pathway for crop nitrogen uptake that allows top yields with half the nitrogen fertilizer. Arcadia Biosciences is marketing the nitrogen-efficient crops, working with Chinese rice growers and Australian wheat growers and is working to develop the new nitrogen efficiency in corn. Arcadia has already signed a licensing agreement with the Maharashtra Seed Company in India, the world’s second-most-populous country. Greenpeace claims that rice smuggled from biotech experimental fields has already

been sold on consumer markets without government approval, and perhaps even exported. However, with world rice prices recently hitting record highs, no one has seemed to care. The question today is how to produce adequate food, with cropland per person declining. In addition, fertilizer prices have been sharply inflated by the conversion of power plants to burn much of the natural gas which used to supply fertilizer factories. World leaders are also welcoming the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s major effort to create a renewed Green Revolution to create the first high-yield farming in

sub-Saharan Africa, supply the last surge of human population growth worldwide, and provide higher-quality diets for the tropical countries. DENNIS T. hands-on flying

Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@yahoo.com

Having your head in the game As I write this, our season here in the southwest is winding down while the rest of the country is beginning to ramp up. It’s a time of anticipation and planning; trying to get some idea on how the spring and summer season will unfold. If there is one thing that is certain in the world of agriculture it is that there is nothing that is certain. Every season is a roll of the dice with too many variables to count. Experience and historical trends are about the best tools we have to plan by. We can look at our bank accounts and hope, gaze out at the horizon and pray, but the fact is, you can’t be sure of anything until the acres on the books are marked off and the check clears the bank. The best we can do as ag pilots is

simply to do our best with the work we have. Keeping the aircraft and machines clean and in good working order, ensuring that we do good quality, accurate applications and making sure the grower gets what he pays for. These are tangible things that are in our ability to control or change. We can’t affect the weather or the markets, the economy or someone else’s practices. The best we can do is the best we can do within our own realm of influence. The center of that realm is our own mindset and the state of our mental acuity. Having your brain up to speed is as important a component of our jobs as the aircraft itself. Stress, fatigue and distractions; they are a fact of life. Given the opportunity,

these things can shroud a pilot’s ability to think at the required rate in a fog of uncertainty and confusion, leading to any number of very unfavorable results, from the tragic to the downright ridiculous. I’ve recently been re-introduced to the ramifications of “having your head up and locked”. It ain’t pretty. Cobwebs creep into the recesses of the mind, un-noticed or completely overlooked until what once was a professional aviator is reduced to a bumbling idiot with a pilot’s license and a high-powered airplane. Ag-pilots are a breed that require a high level of self-confidence and are somewhat aggressive by nature. It’s a personality trait of those who are drawn to this line of

work. We temper that confidence and aggressiveness with maturity, training and professionalism. We are human however, susceptible to basic instincts and emotional overload, particularly when we find ourselves behind the power curve, whether it be in our flying or our personal lives. These traits serve us well in the work we do, but they can work against us if mismanaged or allowed to be negatively influenced by outside sources. Stress breeds more stress and it seems that once it has a good foot hold, it invites all of its nasty little friends over to party on the host’s withering mental capacity, impeding decision making and basic skills, negatively impacting performance and

increasing the likelihood of errors and accidents. The trick here is to be able to accurately assess one’s own mental state. We are all different and all have different thresholds and triggers. It might be easy to tell the other guy he’s crazy, but what does it take to look inward and offer the same “advice” and then take the correct action in order to straighten whatever is bent? It’s difficult at best. I’m certainly not an expert on the subject, just a fairly average guy who has some experience with it. Regardless of the causes, and there can be many, we have to be constantly aware of how we are functioning internally just as we constantly monitor the gauges on the instrument panel. If you find yourself distracted or unable to concentrate, you may find that your timing is off, or your flying becomes sloppy, you get frustrated to the point of anger, or you simply can’t seem to center the ball, it may be time to re-evaluate where your head is. Get out of the airplane and “take ten”, back off a little, make your turns a little wider if necessary, give yourself a little mental space and get things

sorted out before you do something that might be considered “really stupid”. In this line of work a pilot can literally go from hero to zero with the push of a button. A pilot’s reputation and credibility is something that is hard earned and cherished, yet can be dashed to pieces in an instant if he allows himself to become complacent or mentally detached. It will be a mistake that will cost thousands of dollars, perhaps even an airplane or his life. The least it will cost will be the pilots pride and confidence, and those aren’t cheap either. Actuating that spray handle is just like firing a gun. Once it’s done, it’s done, and all that remains are the consequences. Good, bad, or otherwise, it’s an unforgiving business and screw-ups have a mighty long shelf life. These are some things that I’ve re-learned this season, the fact that talking to ATC is not the time to try out your best John Wayne voice, but that’s another story.

Ipanema achieves milestone of 1,100 aircraft produced Embraer delivers the commemorative aircraft to Foliar, from the State of Tocantins, Brazil São José dos Campos, April 7, 2010

BRAZIL – Embraer delivered the 1,100th Ipanema agricultural aircraft, today, in a ceremony held at its Botucatu plant, located 230 km from the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The airplane, tail number PT-UYB, was received by Foliar Aviação Agrícola Ltda., which is headquartered in the State of Tocantins and already operates four Ipanemas.

“The delivery of the 1,100th aircraft is a great milestone for us, because it shows the reliability, solidity and tradition of the Ipanema in the domestic market,” said Almir Miguel Borges, Embraer Vice President – Botucatu Plant. “There have been nearly 40 years of uninterrupted production, guided by continuous research to improve the aircraft

and always focused on the needs of our customers and of the Brazilian agricultural aviation market.” According to the owner of Foliar Aviação Agrícola, Eduardo Juliani, the evolution of the Ipanema throughout the years has been an essential factor for the success of this model. “Today, the aircraft has a more comfortable cockpit and is fueled by economic and ecologically-approved ethanol, which also increases its potential for increasing income.” The Ipanema is the world’s first assembly-line aircraft to leave the factory already certified to fly with hydrated ethanol, which is the same fuel used in automobiles. This is an option for the nation’s agricultural aviation market, because it reduces

environmental impact, operating and maintenance costs, and improves overall performance, which makes the product even more attractive to the market. With a leading 75% share of Brazil’s agricultural aviation market, the Ipanema is used mainly for crop dusting, but it can also be used to fight fires, stock rivers and lakes with fish, and combat hosts and larvae.

75 BELOW 24-HOUR DARKNESS ONE ENGINE THAT COULD

It was a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 free-turbine engine that powered the Twin Otter aircraft on a South Pole rescue mission the world won’t soon forget. Sean Loutitt, captain and chief pilot at Kenn Borek Air, rescued a man who was in dire need of treatment after developing a life-threatening illness while stationed in the frozen wilderness. His life depended on his rescue. And his rescue depended on P&WC engines.

AT-602: Raise the bar for productivity. You’ll reduce your overhead and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. The Air Tractor AT-602 can make that a very practical choice. Its big 630-gallon payload moves you up to economical, high volume production with one plane; reducing loads, saving time and cutting operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. For 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles the AT-602 is the ideal solution. Find out all the advantages of the AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. Large inventory or Air Tractor Parts. AT-802: Power that creates profits. An 800-gallon hopper, up to 190 mph ferry speeds, and greater working capacity than any other ag airplane on the market - what else is on your wish list? With the AT-802 you’ll ferry faster, stay on the spray site longer and do bigger jobs all in one load. That’s a major advantage that only Air Tractor can offer you.
