Shock effect. Does it work? Last month, I received an email with photos of a tragic ag-av accident. It is speculated the pilot was trying to out run the fog. He ended up destroying the aircraft and killing himself. The four photos were horrific; a demolished aircraft and the ejected pilot lying on the ground. There was no doubts to how he died. The sender suggested the industry should see the photos for the shock effect to create a better awareness of the caution needed in the crop dusting business. As a matter of policy, AgAir Update does not print crash photos or relay information where a pilot has gotten into trouble and appears in the media. I don’t see how that could help anything by doing so. I have to admit, while in high school, our senior class was shown a slide show of automobile accidents and the victims. No doubt, it left a lasting impression and may have saved a life or two in that group of new, teenage drivers. There are at least two problems with printing crash victim photos, regardless of any benefits. First, considerations would have to be given to the family. I can’t imagine a family wanting their loved one displayed in such a manner.

Second, the reader would not have a choice whether to view or not. As the page is turned, the photo would jump off the page. Many, if not most, readers would prefer not to view this gore. However, in training sessions where there is a controlled audience and the family has been consulted, there may be a value to displaying and discussing explicit photos. With the family’s consent, the photos could be incorporated into the training session, giving the audience plenty of warning so one could excuse himself. I know from personal experience, if an ag-pilot gets by with a couple of mishaps without injury, he tends to think the aircraft is indestructible. Some pilots who don’t have mishaps may even fool themselves into thinking it can’t happen to them in their crashworthy aircraft. I’ve yet to see an aircraft that is crashworthy. Maybe our aircraft protect us better than the typical general aviation aircraft, or even an automobile; none are crashworthy, meaning worthy of always sustaining a crash that prevents injury to the pilot. The key word is “always”. Unfortunately, this was the fourth crash and second fatality during the season for this company. It is possible to have such

bad luck, but I dare to venture there may be problems within the organization. At a minimum, the company should take a long hard look at itself to be assured these accidents were not preventable by something it could have done. I hope you enjoy this month’s feature story about Aerovic, based in Ecuador. As you will read, it is a large outfit primarily spraying bananas. Most operators in the northern parts of South America and throughout Central America spray bananas. It is a unique type of flying, mostly in the early morning and sometimes late evening, since the banana leaves will fold during the heat of the day, hindering any coverage of spray material. To my knowledge, all banana See Editorial page 7

missed Been meaning to write and tell you that I missed Tracy Thurman’s article in last month’s paper; not sure what happened but I hope he continues to write a column in your paper, I thoroughly enjoy them! Keep up the great work on the paper, it is an invaluable source of information for me. Regards, John Thomas Nebraska City, NE Hello John; How about that! Tracy was actually missed! We ran out of space because of placing timely items and had to pull Tracy’s article to fit them in. However,

manuals I work with Aircraft Technical Publishers (ATP). I am working on a G164A question that came up recently. The Maintenance and Overhaul manuals for R985 engine appear to have separate manuals for commercial and military versions; Commercial B4 and B5 engines and Military AN-14B engines. Are operators allowed to use either manual versions (military or commercial) on any of the engines, or must they use specific manuals (military manuals for the AN-14B and commercial for the B4,B5)? Commercial manual part numbers are MM=118611 and OH=123440. The military par numbers are AN-0210AB-2 and 02A-10AB-3. Thank you kindly for any feedback, Wendell Olson Aircraft Technical Publishers Hello Rex; This email inquiry came in today. Would you like to respond, please? I’m not sure of the answer, but would suspect

the FAA certified radial engines would have to follow the civilian manuals. Thanks a lot!—Bill Hello Bill, We use the FAA approved manuals MM=118611 and OH=123440 which are the civilian manuals. I am not aware of an approval to use military issued manuals for civilian aircraft. Regards, Rex Vaughan Tulsa Aircraft Engines Tulsa, OK

editorial from page 4 plantations around the world fight the dreaded black and yellow sigatoka diseases and for the most part treated by air. Relative to other types of applications, the application rate is considered high at five to six gallons per acre (50 - 60 liters/ha sometimes more). The ag aviation world is moving toward lower volumes for applications. This is being driven by the need to burn less fuel, do more work in a given time span and better technology. One of these low volume enhancing technologies is the use of adjuvants. You will be reading more in AgAir Update about the use of adjuvants in tank mixes. This practice, once considered “smoke and mirrors”, has flourished and proved to be effective. For my North American readers, as you start this season, please remember there is no application job worth losing

your aircraft. As long as you protect the engine and airframe, your well-being will stay intact. For my south of the equator readers, after another successful season, think about what you can do to make next year even better. Take the time for maintenance that has been delayed, schedule to attend conventions and make up for lost time with family. Yes, I know. There is a contingent of operators positioned in the tropics and subtropics. Your work never stops. Pace yourself. Until next month, Blue Sky and Tailwinds...

fuel In regards to a fuel surcharge, in my business I like to keep things as simple as possible, therefore I keep the fuel prices built into the application. I feel the farmers (especially in this area) like one price and we have become too much of a fee-based society. Why

complicate? I really enjoy your publication and look forward to each issue. Please don’t add a fuel surcharge fee to my next subscription, instead add a buck or two. Just my opinion Jake Hoffner Hoffner Flying Yankton, SD Hello Jake; Good to see you at the Tri-States last month. Finally warming up here to the 80s, lots of sunshine. Everyone has a different opinion about fuel surcharges, from pilots benefiting from a price increase due to fuel charges, to sending the grower a message the increase is temporary or a least not the fault of the applicator. If you can get your growers to accept an increase in prices per acre that will cover the increased fuel cost, the better for you cause even (when) if fuel jumps $1.00 a gallon, that would be a low percentage in price per acre increase. However, in some areas, any price increase is bad, unless it can be justified, e.g. fuel costs. In very simple math, if the a/c is covering 100 acres

an hour and burning 50 gallons an hour, a dollar increase in fuel cost is $0.50 an acre, plus an additional percentage to cover pilot’s pay. With many operators, a $0.50-$0.60 increase per acre without an explanation, then have to do it again toward the end of the season, would cause bigger problems than a fuel adjustment charge. One of the great things left in America (we lose freedoms everyday), is operators are free to charge as they feel is best.—Bill P.S.- No fuel charge on ya subscription! -Bill

Thrushes in Ecuador In Ecuador, there are approximately 165,000 hectares (407,000 acres) of banana plantations. With Sigatoka being a dreaded disease, aerial applications are extremely important for the banana growers. Aerovic C.A., one of the largest aerial application company in Ecuador, accounts for approximately 25% of the banana plantation hectares sprayed. Aerovic C.A. is the aviation division of the Favorita Fruit Company owned by the Wong Group. Headquartered at the Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Aiport in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Aerovic C.A. also operates out of five additional satellite strips. Aerovic was founded on June 16, 1987 running three departments: aerial application, maintenance and phytosanitary (plant health). Aerovic’s principal activity is the aerial spraying of banana plantations throughout Ecuador. Interestingly, in

addition to the aerial division, The Favorita Fruit Company is divided into three other divisions: Reybanpac, which handles banana, pineapple and macadamia export, production of plastic banana covers, production of dairy including milk, cheese and yogurt and finally accountability of environmental protection. The Fertisa division handles distribution and maintenance of agrochemicals. The final division, The Wong Foundation, is responsible for the education of employees’ families. Aerovic started its company with 4 Cessna T-188C’s (turbocharged Ag Trucks) and was very

successful with those aircraft. Yet, with the need for a larger hopper capacity, improved reliability and a lower peracre fuel cost, Aerovic turned to the turbine-powered aircraft. In 1998, Aerovic purchased its first turbine - the 400 Thrush equipped with a PT6A15AG. With improved efficiency and minimal maintenance costs, Aerovic immediately development a plan to convert their ten T188C fleet to turbine Thrushes. The plan was to add one turbine 510 Thrush every season; in

(L-R) Vice President of Thrush Aircraft Jody Bays, Operations Manager of Aerovic, CA Jose Cabrera Operations and Juan Philips of Africair, dba Tropic Aviation Distributors — Jose Cabrera accepts Aerovic’s tenth turbine Thrush at the Thrush Aircraft factory in Albany, Georgia.

addition to a 510-DC Thrush (dual cockpit/dual control) to allow the development and training of future turbine pilots. Currently, Aerovic operates thirteen aircraft. Of these thirteen aircraft, nine are Thrush S2R-T34 and four are T-188Cs. The fleet repetitively treats 35,000 hectares (86,500 acres) of farm land annually. Favorita Fruit Company Holding owns 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres) and the

remaining 25,000 hectares (61,700 acres) belong to independent growers. To meet the spraying demand to treat 35,000 hectares, Aerovic’s ten pilots fly an average of 6,500 hours a year. In addition to its agricultural aircraft, Aerovic operates a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, a C-206G and a C-182T for local and international flights. Aerovic’s President Mr. Rafael Wong who holds a private pilot’s license, inspects regularly the plantations with his Cessna 206. High spraying season runs between December and May during the rainy season with less applications between June and November. Current application rates vary from 3.5 and 6.0 gal/ha (1.5 - 2.5 gal/acre or 35 - 60 liter/ha) depending on the product being applied using CP nozzles or Micronair AU-5000 rotary atomizers. One of the main reasons for Aerovic’s success is the company’s commitment to quality throughout the organization. It implemented a quality assurance program for maintenance and quality standards in all of its operations. The company has been very successful in training all team members in the organization to participate in improving processes, products and services. As a result of their dedication to quality, Aerovic is certified ISO9002 as it applies to the aerial application and phytosanitary service. It has also earned the official certification of “Air Services Provider” granted by the Ecuadorian Civil Aeronautics Authority by meeting required aerial application standards. The major challenge facing Aerovic in maintaining and growing their company is the development and training of new pilots. To address this need, Aerovic developed a pilot training program to ensure their quality philosophy will also be used in pilot training. Leading the training program is Operations Manager Captain Jose Cabrera. Capt. Cabrera started with Aerovic in 1998 as its Operations Manager. He is a commercial pilot with 12,000 hours and 35 years ag experience in radial and turbine Ag-Cats, Air Tractors and Thrushes. Recently, Aerovic purchased a new dual cockpit/dual control Thrush Aircraft 510P from Juan Philips of Africair, Inc. dba Tropical Aviation Distributors, the Latin American Thrush authorized sales representative based in Miami, Florida. The aircraft was bought in order to provide turbine training to Aerovic’s pilots. The dual-cockpit/dual-control Thrush is equipped with bubble windows

in the aft cockpit to provide superb visibility. Even with the dual-cockpit/ dual-controls configuration, the 510P Thrush provides excellent speed and maneuverability. Pilots’ reactions have been extremely positive. No one expects a two-seat trainer to be as nimble as a single-seater, but the dual cockpit Thrush easily does the work of both – performing its duty as a trainer, while still providing full spray capabilities. Aerovic’s training program has benefited significantly from the tandem configuration of the DCI Thrush because it provides the trainee with standard cockpit arrangements and a close to normal working environment – all while maintaining the safety of having a qualified instructor on-board. Adding to the aircraft’s value to Aerovic’s operation is the DC Thrush fits perfectly into spray operations. With easily removable ballast, the aircraft performs flawlessly when going about daily duties outside of the training realm. “Thrush got it right when they built the dual-cockpit, dual-controlled 510P” said Captain Cabrera. “I don’t believe any other manufacturer offers an airplane that can provide such an absolutely hands on training capability in the actual spray environment, while still maintaining the highest margins of safety and dependability that we demand in our operation. I can’t imagine training agricultural pilots any other way, because there is simply no better way.” With the completion of the pilot training expansion, plans are underway for Aerovic to start expanding its operation to treating rice, palm and corn.

DynaNav - different by design This is an often used phrase, however, in our case it is most appropriate as it completely describes not only how we design and manufacture product but also the way that we do business. Technology has changed the way business is done, especially in the area of communications. Today there are many utilities enabling immediate direct communication in a variety of forms to virtually anyone in our world. Taking advantage of these technological advances is where our company sets itself apart from others in our industry. Strong statement? You bet. Here’s why we can make that claim: Direct to customer support. Our knowledgeable combination of business professional’s, product design and technology make it possible for us to provide immediate resolution of a variety of needs – purchase, support, upgrade, even customize a product, virtually instantly and anywhere on the globe. Since 1995, our extensive network of satisfied customers on 5 continents has

proven this claim over and over again. Our confidence in our product durability, reliability and overall performance is evident in our full 3 year warranty that we provide - the best in the Aerial Ag industry by far. Instant response to service requests. We are proud of our reputation for responsiveness among our ag pilot customers. We understand that the season is short and productivity equals profit, you can’t afford downtime caused by product failures. In the event that a product failure does occur, you want to tell your story once and to someone who understands the issues without having to consult a manual or relay the problem up the line. Direct to customer sales. Middlemen do not add value to our product. Why? Because DynaNav products have few product failures, are fully upgradeable in the field and require only a few hours training on our simulator (included in our free software). Without middlemen, we have been able to offer our products

at a lower price for a higher quality technology. Aviation-specific design. Aerial application environments are significantly more complex than groundbased environments using wheeled vehicles. Since the very beginning we have designed our aerial guidance

and mapping products specifically for Precision Aerial Agriculture applications using fixed or rotor wing aircraft. Because of this Aerial Ag focus, our products feel more natural to the pilot and are designed to maximize safety in aviation environments.

how DynaFlight systems are different include: IFGI (Integrated Flight Guidance Instrument) Safer, more intuitive, and more accurate than light-bar technology, the IFGI is mounted on the dash panel just below the pilot’s line of sight. Similar to a heads up display, the IFGI can be scanned along with other instruments and monitored using the pilot’s peripheral vision. Not only does it provide navigation, guidance and mapping updated at 30 times per second, it gives the pilot discretionary control over the entire system and menu topics.

DynaGrip, intuitively familiar to any pilot. The ergonomically designed grip fits comfortably in the palm of the hand for secure control over the entire DynaNav system and many other aircraft functions. Our unique design employs a 5-function “top hat” switch and trigger switch for entry. The dynamic combination of integrated flight guidance (IFGI) and hand grip (DynaGrip) keep the pilot’s E.O.T.W. (eyes out the window) and hand on the control at all times.

Antenna, GPS/GLONASS WAAS/L BAND Capable Specifically designed for maximum performance on an aircraft under the rigors of air-ag operations, this antenna is shaped for signal enhancement and to minimize signal loss. Meeting growing demand for pilot accountability. with the extreme accuracy of the DynaFlight system and capabilities of AirAg Office software solutions, pilots and operators will be able to better comply with specific criteria required by various agencies and bodies that govern the aerial agriculture industry.

TracMap appoints four additional distributors The New Zealand GPS company TracMap has continued its rapid progress as a new entry in the GPS guidance market, with the appointment of four new distributors in the past two months. This brings its total distributors to eight. It seems its targeted theme of “easy to use” has struck a chord with many operators. The appointment of the additional distributors is part of the company’s 3 year growth plan for the North American market. “We spent the past 18 months getting to know the industry and identifying people who we are confident can support the TracMap brand” said company president Colin Brown. “We felt it was important to have good distributors in place before committing to a product rollout.” One of the new distributors is Coastal Helicopters, based in Panama City, FL. Company president Greg Clubbs is delighted to have picked up a TracMap

distributorship. “We have been looking for a better guidance system for some time” he said. “Quite apart from being simple to install and easy to use, we like the TracMap philosophy. “It fits closely with our approach to business, which is stay focused on what you are good at, and deliver a high quality product.” Greg also commented that an additional bonus was that several of the TracMap’s unique features were ideal for some of the specialised contract work the company undertook. Another new distributor is Frankie Williams, operating from Americus, GA. Many readers will know Frankie, and his reputation for a no-nonsense approach. Frankie liked the TracMap system as soon as he saw it. “I have been looking for something to replace my old WAG that I could work”, he said. “My problem with most of the systems on the market today are they are too complicated for my old brain.”

Frankie said that he knows a lot of guys who just want to fly simple patterns and occasionally produce a coverage map. “For these guys, the TracMap system will be ideal” said Frankie. Joe Cordoba from Southern Florida is another new TracMap distributor. “I have been around helicopters for years”, said Joe, “and when I saw the TracMap system at Heli-Expo this year I recognised its potential immediately”. Joe has a lot of customers through Latin America, and believes the ease of use and reliability of the TracMap system will suit them admirably. The other new TracMap distributor is Isolair Aviation, headed by Walter Bliault in British Columbia, Canada. Isolair Aviation is linked to existing TracMap distributor Isolair Helicopter Systems, out of Portland, OR.

Careful weed management answer to rise in resistance RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC— Resistant weeds are on the rise, but industry experts say growers can take a few key steps to address or avoid resistance in their fields. Managing Glyphosate Resistance Experts suggest the following tips to reduce the impact of resistance in fields: 1. Begin with clean fields and control weeds early. Do this via a burndown and/or preemergence application of a residual herbicide, such as Kixor® herbicide technology. 2. Scout your fields regularly, identify weeds and their location in the field, and respond quickly to changes in weed populations. “Growers should scout their fields for changes in weed population – particularly weeds that survive a herbicide application. Even subtle changes can be an early indicator of a potential weed resistance problem and can rapidly become a field- or farmwide problem if they are not addressed quickly,” said Dan Westberg, Ph.D.,

Technical Market Manager with BASF. 3. Institute an integrated weed management program that employs multiple modes of action. 4. Follow label directions closely to achieve optimal performance. Pay close attention to rate and timing information. 5. Use other agronomic practices, such as crop rotation, cultivation and cleaning of equipment between fields, to diversify your weed control options. Experts agree that one of the best methods for fighting resistance is incorporating different modes of action into a weed management strategy. Kixor products, including OpTill™ herbicide for soybeans and Verdict™ herbicide for corn, give growers the opportunity to do so. Effective on more than 70 hard-tocontrol broadleaf weeds, Kixor helps combat glyphosate resistance and get the most out of every acre. For more information about Kixor herbicide technology or the BASF Crop Protection portfolio of products, visit www.agproducts.basf.us.

hands-on flying

Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@yahoo.com

It’s about risk management Flying is without a doubt our safest mode of travel. Statistically, the most dangerous part of aviation is the drive to the airport. Of course aerial application

and aerial transportation are two very different ways of using an aircraft to accomplish a task. It’s not exactly crab fishing in the

Bering Sea, but ag flying certainly has its share of hazards. We are engaged in a business where risk and danger are part of our daily lives. It’s an integral part of what we do and it’s something that has to be considered before, during and after every flight - prepare, execute and learn. Risk management is a skill that is acquired through training, experience and professionalism. It’s a big part of the aeronautical decision making process. For an ag pilot, those decisions are complex and require an entirely different set of analytics than other aspects of aviation. During training, risk management is something that should be specifically addressed. It is one of the most important traits of being a competent and safe ag pilot.

An ag pilot is charged with the safe and proper use of a very expensive flying machine. His life depends on making sure the risks to the public, himself, his aircraft and the crops he is treating do not outweigh the benefit of what he is doing. Otherwise, it is a big roll of the dice with all the chips on the line. Given the circumstances, it’s a gamble that may not be worth taking. When the odds start stacking up against you, it might be a good time to rethink your plan of attack. There are times when discretion is the better part of valor. Wind, wires, mountains, towers, obstructions, mechanical status of the aircraft and your own health and abilities are things that must be considered before pumping on the load and pushing forward the throttle.

There are two possible outcomes when an ag pilot is pushing the limits in excess. One is he will return safely and his peers will say he is a “helluva pilot”. The second is his peers will be standing around at his memorial service questioning why he did such an idiotic thing.

Wind, wires, mountains, towers, obstructions, mechanical status of the aircraft A pilot needs to appropriately assess the situation and make a conscious note of all the risks involved. It could be something as simple as what applied pattern to use or what he should expect from the conditions in the upper air as he is making his turns. Density altitude and downwind runway operations are big considerations. I’ve read reports where if a guy had simply made two loads instead of one, or swapped take off directions, he could have afterwards taxied the airplane back to the hangar instead of having to

haul it back on a truck. Ag pilots are prideful creatures. We have an innate drive to excel and a competitive nature in what we do. Sometimes those things, along with a good dose of stubbornness and a splash of peer pressure, will cause us to ignore the risks and lead us to taking unnecessary chances; Risks that could wind up smashing a pilot and his aircraft right into the NTSB record books. There isn’t any sense in de-registering a perfectly good airplane, or pilot for that matter, for the sake of saving a few minutes or trying to prove something that nobody will remember come tomorrow. There’s no way to remove the risks and dangers related to aerial application. The key is to mitigate those risks to within acceptable limits through sound judgment and good airmanship. View every job individually and analyze it before you dive in and go to work. Stay ahead of the airplane, far enough that you can identify possible hazards and adjust your flying to compensate. Remember: the true “helluva pilot” is the one who makes it to retirement with minimal scar tissue and money in the bank. Ya’ll take care out there!

Fishing fibs & tall tales on the Little Red River by Lynn Baxter, WRK of Arkansas, LLC WRK of Arkansas donated a guided fishing trip on the Little Red River and a private flyin to the WAAAA auction during the 2011 AAAA Convention. Dennie Stokes, Stokes Flying Service, purchased the fly-in, and AAAA president, Brenda Watts, purchased the guided fishing trip. On March 19, WRK of Arkansas met Brenda Watts, Lou Stokes, Amy Gibson and Janice Everett at Lobo Landing Resort located on the Little Red River in Heber Springs, AR. From the start we could see the

competitiveness of the anglers. Friendly bets were placed just as the boat was pulling out of the marina. Wagers on the first fish, biggest fish, and the most fish caught were placed. Amy Gibson caught the first trout of the day. She soon added a second, third and fourth fish to her tally. Brenda was thoughtful enough to teach everyone on the boat how people cuss in Watson, Arkansas. Lou showed everyone that not only could she catch her share of trout, but she could also snag the AAAA President a few times! Janice, the quiet one, caught her limit of

trout and might have even snagged the biggest trout of the day. Overall it was an exciting fishing trip! Brenda, Lou, Janice and Amy both caught their limit of five fish each which brought the trout tally to 20 trout in a record two hours! The ladies want it to be known that if anyone wants to purchase the WRK of Arkansas fishing trip at next year’s WAAAA fund raiser, they will have a battle on their hands, because these ladies are coming back again next year!

in my opinion

Open mouth, insert foot I am fix’n (proper southern English) to tell you a short “sea story,” and if it offends someone, I sincerely do apologize. I honestly do not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings. Several months ago a young man and his dad came to my office to get some information on our ag-flight training program. As it was, he already had his Private Pilot’s License and wanted to work towards his Commercial certificate, which would include the ag flying he would be doing. I made the suggestion that he may want to consider working towards his Instrument rating. The conversation that followed went something like this: STUDENT’: Is it really necessary to get an instrument rating? ME: Not really. There are many

successful ag pilots who do not have an instrument rating, but these guys probably have been ag flying for a long time. This industry has been going through major changes in the last 20-30 years. The introduction of GPS guidance systems, turbine engines, flow control, variable liquid and solid dispersal rates, electrostatic and CP nozzles, etc., and that is just with the airplanes. Revolutionary loading systems, wet and dry, are radically different than when I flew my first load of toxaphene in a 450 Stearman. After having made that brief tangential statement (which is really not totally irrelevant), I continued my soap box expounding; ME: If you were to decide that ag flying is just not for you and you

wanted to go into another field of aviation such a corporate, airline, freight or flight instruction, then the instrument rating is a requirement. Furthermore, In My Opinion, I believe that usually an instrument rated pilot masters the GPS much quicker than the non-instrument pilot. They, usually, are much smoother on the controls than the non-instrument rated pilot and are more likely to fly the airplane in balanced, coordinated flight. And then I hit the “home run.” ME: Having an instrument rating or not having an instrument rating is like comparing a highway patrolman with a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement to a deputy sheriff who never even finished high school. Actually, I used a rather crude term that makes reference

How is the current economy influencing your business? Is an aircraft purchase decision being considered this year? What are some common sense considerations affecting an aircraft purchase decision? President Obama signed the “Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010” into law December 21, 2010. This law changed the requirements for 100% and 50% bonus depreciation, but that doesn’t guarantee it will benefit you. Profits are down for many companies. Run May & November Lower profits may not allow you to benefit from this extra depreciation. The difference between the bonus depreciation and normal depreciation

Is 2011 the year for an aircraft purchase? deserves comment. The total amount that can be depreciated using either method is the purchase price plus sales tax for an outright purchase or the cash difference paid plus the sales tax for a trade transaction. The difference between the bonus and normal depreciation is the year in which the depreciation is deducted as an expense. To evaluate the financial difference, prepare an after-tax cash flow for the next five years using both the bonus and normal depreciation methods. Then use Net Present Value (NPV) to compute the value in today’s dollars of each depreciation method. You might be surprised with the results of this calculation.

money talk The aircraft depreciation remaining on a current aircraft impacts the cash flow for the continued operation of that aircraft. The depreciation amount claimed each year is a non-cash expense that reduces the tax bill and effectively produces cash. Think of the tax savings from depreciation as an interest free loan from the government for as long as the aircraft is owned. If you are near the end of your depreciation, then evaluate a replacement aircraft. If the replacement aircraft is a new aircraft, then it might qualify for the bonus depreciation. The delivery date is one of the key items affecting bonus depreciation. Taxes are always one of the factors affecting a purchase decision, so visit your tax counsel and advisor to confirm the after-tax financial impact of a purchase this year. Used aircraft values are depressed. The resale value has a big impact on total ownership cost. New aircraft offer greater reliability and lower operating cost than used aircraft. If you’re trading a used aircraft for a new aircraft, the trade value offered might be a deciding factor in the purchase decision. Will the resale value of the used aircraft increase significantly in the future? Purchasing the new aircraft at a significant discount might change the resale percentage, but be careful about jumping to conclusions. Purchasing or trading for a used aircraft is an alternative since used aircraft values are depressed. Due to the depressed market today, the used aircraft could actually appreciate in value. Since bonus depreciation applies to capital improvements on any type (new or used) aircraft, making improvements to your current aircraft or purchasing a fixer-upper might be a better financial option. Common sense tells us that as the aircraft ages it will be less reliable and cost more to maintain. Has your aircraft reliability or availability changed significantly? How much longer will your current aircraft be up-to-date with technology? Will your aircraft maintenance cost increase significantly? Those making a purchase decision to order a new aircraft that delivered in the years that the economy was strong

enjoyed the greatest financial reward. The aircraft replacement timing was great due to receiving a high trade-in value for the used aircraft while not paying a premium for the new aircraft when it was ordered. we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-3, 14). Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Paul wrote, “For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him (Colossians 1:19). Paul and Peter called Jesus Christ both God and Savior (Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1). Jesus Christ is eternal. Jesus said, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore” (Revelation 1:18). Jesus Christ was fully man and fully God. “And in Him you have been made complete” (Colossians 2:10). Jesus raised the man’s daughter from the dead, and she was made totally well (Matthew 9:18-26). Jesus healed the man with the withered hand; He made the withered hand as complete as the AgAirUpdate 4.66" x 6.03 other hand (Matthew 12:13). Jesus

healed the woman’s daughter who was demon possessed; He made her totally free from demonic possession and healed her completely (Matthew 15:21-28). Jesus touched the open coffin of a young man who was dead, and said, “Young man I say to you, arise.” The young man who was dead sat up and began to speak, totally healed and alive (Luke 7:11-15). At the pool of Bethesda there was a man who had been lame for thirty eight years. Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” Immediately the man was completely healed and he took his bed and walked (John 5:1-11). When Jesus Christ healed someone He made them completely whole, totally healed and well. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (John 10:27-28). Paul said, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new… For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:17, 21). Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 11:25-26, 14:6). Paul said, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Peter said that trusting in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is the only way a person can be saved (Act 4:12). Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior gives a person eternal life in God’s heaven—it is complete and eternal salvation! “Who is the head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10). These principalities and powers are rankings of angelic forces, both good and

demonic. Jesus Christ is not only the author and finisher of a Christian’s eternal salvation (Hebrews 12:2); He also rules all angelic forces. God’s good angels, and Satan and his demonic forces, are under the control of Jesus Christ. The spiritual warfare that goes on in the spiritual realm is partially revealed in Daniel chapter 10. The demons that possessed the man who lived in caves were cast out by Jesus Christ into a herd of pigs (Luke 8:26-39). A man was brought to Jesus who couldn’t speak because he was demon-possessed, and Jesus cast the demon out and the man spoke (Matthew 9:32-33). Good angels can’t make a Christian any more spiritually complete; and demonic angels cannot make a Christian spiritually incomplete. “In [Jesus Christ] a person is circumcised with a circumcision that is not performed by human hands, but in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Jesus Christ” (Colossians 2:11). Circumcision was the sign that the man was a member of the nation God would create through Abraham (Genesis 17:10-14)—but it never made anyone righteous in God’s

eyes. Circumcision is of value if you keep the Law of Moses perfectly; but if you have broken even one of God’s commandments your circumcision is worthless (Romans 2:25). sin in the flesh” (Romans 8:3). “Having been buried with [Jesus Christ] in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through your faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead” (Colossians 2:12). The Christians who were baptized in the New Testament had made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. Christians should be baptized, but apart from faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, dunking someone in water is only going to get him/her wet. The same power of God that raised Jesus Christ from the dead will raise up every believer from the dead. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9). Jesus Christ takes every Christian who dies into God’s heaven and gives them a new spiritual body (2 Corinthians 5:18), completely healed physically and spiritually for all eternity. Christians also have the power of the Holy Spirit to live a life that is pleasing to God while they are on this earth. Becoming a Christian is not hard; just trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

NAAA President Rick Richter testifies to Congress about high fuel prices’ effect on agricultural aviation WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rick Richter, the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s (NAAA) 2011 president, testified today before the House of Representatives, Small Business Committee, Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade on the topic of high fuel prices’ damaging effects on small businesses. Richter, who is also owner of Richter Aviation, an aerial application small business in Maxwell, Calif., focused on the harmful effects fuel costs have on aerial application businesses, farmers and ultimately consumers. Richter informed the committee aerial application accounts for an estimated 18 percent of commercially applied crop protection products in the United States and is often the only method for timely pesticide application. Increases in fuel prices “result in a number of cashflow and service-marketability issues for

the aerial application industry,” Richter testified. Moreover, “the price of fuel always tends to trickle down all the way to the last entity in the supply chain, from the applicator to the farmer to the retailer and ultimately to the consumer.” Richter stated fuel surcharges have become a common part of an aerial application business’s invoice. Thanks to higher agricultural commodity prices, these surcharges are met with minimal complaint by farmer-clients presently because they are receiving a good price for their crop. The agricultural aviation industry would face real challenges, however, should fuel and commodity prices move sharply in opposite directions. For example, if the same high fuel prices exist as they do today but commodity prices return to 2002 levels—when prices were two to three times lower—farmers would be less willing to embrace

Defeating dehydration Summer is prime time for flying. It is also a prime time for dehydration, given the combination of higher ambient temperatures, higher humidity, and warm winds. Certain beverages, e.g., coffee, tea, and soft

drinks, can further increase the risk of dehydration. Since dehydration can produce headache, fatigue, cramps, sleepiness, and dizziness, it can put pilots at increased risk for incidents and accidents.

Dehydration alone can create insidious hazards to your health, as well as to your safety as a pilot. There is, however, a more serious danger. If you do not remain aware of environmental conditions and your personal physiological status, you can progress to heat exhaustion, even if you maintain the necessary water intake for proper hydration. There are three stages of heat

The amount of water you need to drink depends on work level, temperature, humidity, personal lifestyle, and individual physiology. The standard guideline for proper hydration, though, is to drink two to four quarts of water every 24 hours. Another way to measure your intake is the familiar eight-glassesa-day guide: If each glass of water is eight ounces and you drink eight glasses, then you end up with 64 ounces or two quarts. As with every other aspect of your health, the key is to be continually aware of your condition. Most people become aware of being thirsty with a 1.5-quart deficit. This level of dehydration triggers the “thirst mechanism.” The problem, however, is that the thirst mechanism does not trigger until you are already

dehydrated. In addition, the body’s thirst mechanism is too easily turned off by drinking just a small amount of fluid. By the time you feel thirsty, you already have a significant fluid deficit, and if you drink only enough to make the sensation of thirst disappear, you are merely delaying the much- needed replacement of body fluid.

exhaustion, and transition from one to another is not necessarily obvious. The first, heat stress, is characterized by a body temperature from 99.5 degrees to 100 degrees F. At this level, the pilot may experience reductions in alertness, performance, dexterity, coordination, and visual capability. In the second stage, which involves a body temperature of 101 degrees to 105 degrees F, the pilot experiences more obvious fatigue. Other effects can include nausea/vomiting, giddiness, cramps, rapid breathing, or fainting. These are not good at any time, but are especially dangerous when piloting an aircraft. The third stage, a body temperature above 105 degrees F, is heat stroke. In this condition, the body’s heat control mechanism stops working. The pilot

can experience mental confusion and disorientation and may exhibit bizarre behavior. At its worst, heat stroke can produce a coma. As with every other aspect of your health, the key is to be continually aware of your condition. Fly safely, and never pass up an opportunity to have a fresh glass of water! He turned southbound and noted a 7- to 10-mile-per-hour (mph) tailwind. The pilot reported that the tailwind, coupled with the descent, caused the helicopter to enter a settling with power condition. He stated that due to the close proximity of the trees he was not able to perform a normal recovery of lowering of the collective and applying forward cyclic control. The helicopter descended between a row of trees and the main rotor blades struck the trees. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the helicopter before the accident. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA224* Date: March 11, 2011 Location: Swan Lake, AR Aircraft: AYRES CORPORATION S2R-T34 Injuries: 1 Minor. According to the written statement submitted by the pilot, he was approaching the airport to land when he encountered a gust of wind. The airplane subsequently impacted power lines and subsequently impacted the ground below, inverted. The empennage was twisted and partially

helicopter turned approximately 60 degrees in heading, and experienced a loss of lift. He reduced the collective and initiated an auto rotation. After the helicopter came to rest, the pilot exited the helicopter, and reported that the transmission was “hot” and the transmission cooler was “the same temperature as the outside air temperature.” According to photographs provided by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that responded to the accident location, the helicopter was resting on the hopper that was utilized to carry the applicant and it was leaning about 45 degrees to the left. The tailboom was severed and the main rotor blades were damaged. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA179* Date: April 01, 2011 Location: Newman, CA Aircraft: EAGLE DW1 Injuries: 1 Serious. On April 1, 2011, about 1020 Pacific daylight time, an Eagle DW-1 collided with a propane truck near Newman, California. The airplane was operating under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 137.

The commercial pilot was seriously injured, and the airplane sustained substantial damage to both lower wings from impact forces. The local aerial application flight departed a private dirt strip near Newman about 1000. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The pilot stated that he was applying his fifth load of the day, and was on the third pass of that load. He was flying over the field, and approaching power lines and a road that split the field. The power lines were about 35 to 40 feet above ground level (agl). He had been flying under the lines unless a power pole was in the way or he observed traffic on the road, which was fairly busy. As the airplane approached the road, the pilot noticed a propane truck approaching his flight path from his right to left. He tried to adjust, but could not clear the truck. The left main landing gear separated after it collided with the top of the truck. The pilot was able to maintain control of the airplane, so he returned to his nearby home dirt strip. During the landing, the airplane settled hard, and knocked the pilot

Plans to modernize the decades old safety recommendations program are underway Washington, DC - The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) voted unanimously this week to change its Most Wanted List Safety Recommendations Program Board Order The Board Order is an internal document that provides policy guidance and establishes procedures for the identification, development, selection and implementation of safety recommendations on the NTSB’s Most Wanted List. “With this week’s vote, the NTSB will begin a significant transformation of one of our flagship programs, the Most Wanted List,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “For the past 20 years, the Most Wanted List has spotlighted certain critical

transportation safety issues and the NTSB’s safety recommendations that would address them It has been one of the NTSB’s most effective tools, but after 20 years, it is in need of a face lift and procedural streamlining The Board has now paved the way for those important updates to take place.”

Currently, the list contains 56 individual recommendations, many of which have been on the list for years. Currently, the list contains 56 individual recommendations, many of which have been on the list for years. The

new Board Order stipulates that future lists would be limited to a maximum of 10 issue areas, each supported by recommendations, and that the formerly separate state and federal Most Wanted Lists be combined into a single, comprehensive list Board Members each year will select the issues for the Most Wanted List by a written voting process, and the updated Most Wanted List will be unveiled in an annual press conference “The beauty of this new process is the fact that the Most Wanted List can be changed completely each and every year, if the Board so chooses,” Hersman said “This will go a long way to keeping the Moat Wanted List fresh, dynamic and current for the next 20 years of its life.” NTSB Media Contact: Terry N. Old memories surface at the darnedest times by Bob Wheat, Founder International Crop Duster’s Day Society When I heard of the passing of Leland Snow, it brought back memories of when I first met him in the late 1950s. He was selling his newly designed S-1 and S-2 ag planes. He came across as an educated, well-mannered type of guy. He knew the ag flying business and was determined to build a better airplane. At the time, I didn’t believe his designs would rock the earth, but what did I know? It doesn’t seem to have been that long ago, but the years passed ever so quickly flying those old airplanes. Then suddenly, it was out with the old and in with the new. What a difference Leland Snow made to this business of flying low and slow! As I sat thinking of the old days, memories of other great pilots I had known and flown with flashed across my

mind. Men like Rocky Dally of Louisiana who perished in a mid-air collision in the 60s; the German pilot who wasn’t wearing his seat belt and hit power lines, losing his life as he was catapulted through the spinning propeller.

The years passed so quickly flying those old airplanes There was Lloyd Steen of Mississippi who’s life was claimed in a mid-air collision in the 70s and A.J. Harmon, who as a 20-year old B-17 pilot in WWII survived, came home and flew crop dusters until he met his fate in a mid-air collision in the 80s. Just as Leland Snow, these pilots were doing what they loved best:

flying, building, working on and talking airplanes. Each of these great men left behind a legacy for people with whom their paths crossed. Their impressions left memories in peoples’ hearts that will always be cherished.

The International Crop Duster’s Day Society says its goodbye to Leland Snow. Leland, you did a fine job and you will be missed. May the memories of you and your accomplishments forever be remembered...Farewell!

The International Crop Duster’s Day Society If you’re a crop duster pilot who’d like to join the International Crop Dusters Society, send your name, address and pertinent information to me. There are no dues and we would like to have you as a member. You’ll also get a membership certificate suitable for framing. If you have stories, tales and pictures about the “Golden Days of Crop Dusting” that you would like to share, we would appreciate having them for our files and to share with other members. Perhaps someday a book chocked full of those memories just might be possible! Bob Wheat The International Crop Duster’s Day Society 8148 W. F M 515 Yantis, TX 75497 oldduster@aol.com

AAU’s Argentina excursion 2011 by Bill Lavender ARGENTINA — It had been awhile since the last time I made an excursion where I visited numerous ag-operators and ag-aviation companies during one trip. Lately, my trips have been one or two stops, but not so with my last trip that took me to Argentina, where I made eight stops in five days, driving 1,700 km (about 1,100 miles). It was a whirlwind trip. Whenever I travel in a foreign-speaking country, I have a translator with me. For this trip to Argentina, Walt Jazun, one of my South American representatives, met me at the Ezeiza Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires on Sunday morning, after an overnight, 10-hour nonstop flight from Atlanta. Many of you have met Walt over the years and know his real job is a captain on an Airbus 320/319, flying for United Airlines based out of Denver. Walt grew up in Argentina. Not only is his Spanish perfect, but he also knew many of the people we would visit. One of the challenges of traveling in Argentina is driving. I have done it many times and each time my driving skills

are tested to their limits. For this trip, thankfully, Walt did most of the driving. The Cracker Jack box rental car was expensive, about $500 a week, and rightly so, us having a good chance of dinging it. I always buy full coverage insurance in South America. My credit card auto insurance and my primary auto insurance is not good in Argentina. I have checked. Our plan was to use Rosario as our base, staying at the Holiday Inn for the next three nights. Rosario is a good-size city north of Buenos Aires by about 300 km (180 miles), a four-hour drive with numerous toll roads. It was good to arrive at the hotel mid-afternoon after the grueling flight and drive. Tomorrow, we would be refreshed and ready to make two visits. Monday, we drove north 150 km (90 miles) to Sauce Viejo, Santa Fe. Walt had prearranged a visit with SpeedAgro for the morning and Tiger SRL in the afternoon. SpeedAgro is a growing adjuvant manufacturer certified under ISO 9001 quality standards. Its products are registered in Argentina, Uruguay,

Paraguay, Bolivia and Ecuador. Soon, the company’s products will be registered in Chile, Brazil, Central America and Mexico. Formed by SpeedAgro’s president, Victor Escalas, in 2001, the company’s product line consists of three formulations for aerial applicators; SpeedWet Antideriva NG, an anti-drift product, SpeedWet Siliconado NG, an anti evaporant product and SpeedWet Maxion NG, an accelerator used with herbicide mixes. These products are different from many other adjuvants because they are composite formulated water-based, not oil. SpeedAgro also manufacturers other chemicals not directly related to agaviation. SpeedAgro’s facility is 6,900 s.m. (74,000 s.f.) of offices, manufacturing and warehouses. It is certified by CASFE (Association of Agricultural Health and Fertilizers) in the Premium Category. The quality of SpeedAgro’s products are the result of rigorous research and development. Tests were conducted at different experiment stations of

INTA (Institute of National Agriculture Technology), as well as other agricultural research organizations and private companies. Twelve 5,000-kilogram (11,000 pounds) quantity stainless steel vats are used to formulate SpeedAgro products. The vats are controlled by computers that determine the exact amount of mixture calculated by weight, not volume. Individual packaging are also filled based on weight vs. volume to insure accuracy. The facility has a production capacity of 2,000 liters an hour. A new facility is being built that will increase production to 15,000 liters per hour. It will be open in time for the upcoming 2011/2012 spray season. Not only does SpeedAgro products enhance the chemical application, they save the applicator and grower money by replacing oil in tank mixes. Oil-based adjuvants cost about $1.80 - $2.50 USD per hectare (2.47 acres), while SpeedAgro products cost about $1.30 USD per hectare. SpeedAgro stands apart from its

competitors by its dedication to producing one product that can address many concerns for the applicator. The company believes the more adjuvants needed for a single tank mix increases the risk of instability of the mix. After touring SpeedAgro modern facilities, Walt and I traveled across town to visit another company, Tiger SRL. Tiger is a GPS manufacturer for ag-aircraft. The

Real time tracking of Tiger SRL units in Argentina. Gonzalo Slaboch (Luis Slabach’s son) is Tiger SRL’s IT manager, while Gustavo Peralta is head of Marketing. 100% Argentine-owned company started as a manufacturer of communication towers in 1989. In 1998, the company’s president, Luis Slaboch, launched it first GPS unit, the AT720. After eight years, the decision was made to sell direct to customers, dramatically increasing sales; ten units in 2008, 25 in 2009, 40 in 2010. There are 420 units in the field with about half of them working in Argentina and the balance throughout South America. The AT720 is unique in that all the data it generates for the pilot is displayed on its lightbar. The lightbar does not have an “intercept angle”. Instead, the pilot follows

a flight path similar to the command bars of a flight director of an attitude indicator. The pilot can fly a previously established A-B line solely from the lightbar display. The pilot can mark obstacles found in the application field; powerlines, trees, towers, etc. The lightbar will flash a warning when the aircraft approaches the mark. WAAS is not available in South America and differential correction is not used. However, the Tiger AT720 is capable of two-feet or less accuracy. The unit can be preloaded with shape files and be flown without any landmarks. If the unit is coupled with Tiger’s Flow-

Track 2000, it will automatically turn the spray on and off. The Flow-Track 2000 has its own GPS engine and controls the flow rate through a 3-way valve and clutch mechanism. The pilot can override the unit. The Tiger GPS provides real-time tracking and can be superimposed with Google Earth. The operator’s office or customer can monitor the application via the Internet with displays of temperature and humidity, rate of application, product applied per minute and application rate per hectare. The applications are data logged to an SD card.

Tiger is committed to service and resolving AOG problems. The company will be initiating a ground school for pilots of the AT720 and Flow-Track 2000, so they can take full advantage of their features. After a long day, Walt and I drove back to Rosario. Tuesday would come early. We were scheduled to meet Arrowws, SRL, another adjuvant manufacturer and agoperator Marcelo Fargioni for a parallada (bar-b-que) lunch. Be sure to follow along in the next edition of AgAir Update.

spreading the facts

about STFs We are each aware of the need to get out the “Good” word about pesticides and aerial applications. But it appears we are preaching to the choir, ourselves! Although, much progress is being made with the school programs teaching kids about ag aviation. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the American population is urban. Therefore many probably aren’t getting our message. Most ag applicators simply do not have the time or expertise to address civic clubs and preach on-the-stump about our industry. But there is a way to make a difference. At AAU we have developed an idea that each of us can participate in with little or no effort and yet make an impact on Americans nationwide. Every newspaper is always looking for newsworthy and interesting information they can publish with minimum effort, i.e. no reporter or research costs. Submissions with reprint permission always generate interest. With the “Spreading The Facts” section in AAU, you can copy and mail, email or fax to your newspaper positive information everybody else needs to know that we already know! It will be reprinted in multiple newspapers educating the public with “Spreading The Facts” about ag aviation and pesticides. • Photocopy/cut and paste it • Mail, email or fax it to newspaper. Put newspaper’s fax number in machine’s speed dial, email address in “recipients”. • Educate the public! Reprint permission given by AgAir Update - an international agricultural aviation publication

Toxins move up on the worry list

by Dennis T. Avery Churchville, VA—Forty thousand researchers and clinicians have just written to the Journal Science —through their professional societies—asking for broader and quicker testing of “new chemicals in our environment.” Eight societies, including the geneticists, endocrinologists, developmental biologists and others say that 12,000 new substances are being registered with the America Chemical Society every day. They admit that not many of these “new substances” will ever make it into the environment. Still, the societies are asking the federal government to broaden testing beyond toxicology, into such unproven dangers as trace levels of bodily toxins and potential endocrine disruption. This would, of course, employ far more of the learned societies’ members. Do these professional societies think they have learned a lesson from the climate modelers? To whit: if you want more of your members profitably employed, get the Feds to give them lots of nice, salaried government jobs with hefty retirements—to solve some newly concocted media-driven scare. Climatologists are now the third-bestpaid profession in the world, with many billions of dollars flowing into their research projects—since they elevated a net global warming of 0.2°C over the last 70 years into an international emergency. I recently got invited to a lecture on detoxifying my body, presented by a genuine “former professional tennis

player.” I managed to resist the invitation, but I did go on the Web to look at the detox alternatives out there, some of them were outright shilling for organic farming: “Most of the animals we eat are raised on factory farms. Seek a butcher shop where organically farmed meat is sold. It will be more expensive, perhaps that will help curb your consumption.” “Our crops of fruits and eatables are mass farmed… have led to less nutrient rich food products… Organically farmed food will really boost your nutrient intake.” “Our water supply is also filled with impurities such as lead, rust and chlorine… purchase a Brand X water filter… It is critical to your health”… Then there are the product-pushers: Toxin detox capsules; Detox blood purifier capsules with Goldenseal, a potent, cleansing herbal combination; Liver Renew Capsules; and the Hot Seaweed Bath 3-packs (save 15 percent). My favorite is the website of the Ayurvedic healing system from India. “You need this ‘renewal’ periodically if you feel ‘a general lack of zest for life’, feel ‘spaced out’; if you have ‘a general sense of malaise’.” Naturally, they recommend cleansing your system under the care of an Ayurvedic physician. Some of the advice they give is actually pretty sound: Stick to lighter, easier-to-digest foods and eat lots of cleansing fruits and vegetables. However, their “detoxifying tea” is probably just tea. I prefer to heed the wisdom of Dr Graham Colditz, a cancer epidemiologist from the Washington University School

of Medicine in St. Louis, on the occasion of another cancer scare report being delivered to President Obama last May “We already know what causes most cases of cancer, and it’s not pollution or chemicals lurking in our water bottles. It’s tobacco use and other unhealthy behaviors… Maybe up to 4% of cancer in the western world is caused by contaminants and pollution and yet we are chasing new, unknown causes… The damage is it distracts us, as a society, from actually acting on the things that are already in our grasp.” He mentioned giving up smoking, eating a pound of fruits and vegetables per person per day (cutting cancer risk by 25%), drinking less alcohol and eating less red meat. Thanks to our secure and safe food and water supply and world-class access to modern medicine, we are living long enough to get the diseases associated with old age. As baby boomers see 65 in the rear view mirror, they may treasure the remaining years enough to take Dr. Colditz’s advice. AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. T F N

AT-402B: Go turbo. The AT-402B, with the time-proven Pratt & Whitney PT6A-15AG turbine engine, offers impressive climb rates and overall performance.
