With the GuiaTM nav console, safety in the cockpit just got a little easier. Obstacles in a spray field are unfortunately a hazard that pilots encounter on a daily basis. The GuiaTM system goes the extra mile with the Obstacle Display feature which allows pilots to view all marked towers on the GuiaTM screen. approaching obstacles, the GuiaTM console and light bar will flash to When app warn the pilot to manoeuver their aircraft. With the Obstacle Feature, pilots can download the most recent FAA obstacle files and upload them to the GuiaTM nav system. We also offer the option to clients to input their own powerline files and obstacle files with tower height and color code them. The FAA feature is available for all states and the files are updated several times a year at NO COST!

Air Tractor goes Hollywood “We’re really pleased that Disney approached Air Tractor to help with this project. When the Dusty Air Tractor flies past air show spectators, they’ll be entertained and learn how aerial spray planes play a big role in helping feed the world -- as well as how we do our job in a professional and responsible way to protect our environment.” The Dusty Air Tractor airplane is scheduled to appear at 11 air shows across the U.S. and Canada beginning Memorial Day weekend, and continuing through the summer and fall months.
An Air Tractor AT-301 from south Texas has gone Hollywood as part of a big promotional effort surrounding the release of Disney’s Planes animated comedy adventure movie. The AT301 airplane, owned by veteran ag pilot Rusty Lindeman, has undergone a star makeover in the form of a turbine engine conversion to an Air Tractor model AT-400A, along with a fresh new paint scheme so that it now resembles the movie’s hero, a crop duster named Dusty. For thousands of air show attendees this summer, Disney’s Planes will zoom to life with Dusty’s flying performance at select air shows across the United States. Lindeman will be in the pilot’s seat flying aerial demonstrations for the crowds.
“Our entire industry was excited to learn that the little crop duster ‘Dusty’ is the hero of Disney’s Planes,” commented Kristin Edwards, Air Tractor’s Vice-President, Sales. “We’re happy to help in bringing Dusty to life for the air show performances and hope that the audience will have fun and learn a bit more about the role of aerial application in modern agriculture.” In addition to an Interactive Disney Display Hangar offering a variety of activities, Air Tractor will provide kids and parents with puzzles, other giveaways and information explaining Air Tractor’s role in helping farmers grow an abundant, safe and healthy crop and to protect our environment and natural resources. Disney’s Planes takes off in theaters on August 9, 2013. For information about the movie, go to Disney.com/planes.
Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch sees a powerful opportunity to reach a lot of people with a positive message about our industry.
A new paint scheme was but one step in transforming Rusty Lindeman’s AT-301 into an AT-401A to fly at air shows as Disney’s Dusty.

Flying through sequestration Compared to 2012, the 2013 fire season is off to a slow start. By this time last year, several large fires were ongoing across Western states such as New Mexico and Colorado. However, this year the first week of May saw snow accumulation along with subfreezing temperatures across those states, as well as much of the Rockies and the Midwest. The Predictive Services Office of the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) released their fire forecast for the country in early May. It shows a few hotspots in California, Arizona and New Mexico for the early part of the season with activity migrating to the Pacific northwest by late season. Most of the country shows normal to below normal fire activity. The forecast is good through the end of August. It has been about a year and three months since the United States Forest Service (USFS) issued its solicitation for bids for the next generation of heavy air tankers. As I write this in early May, no action has been taken and we are well into fire season. For many months now, the USFS has been saying the solicitations would be out “soon”. I imagine the vendors who have invested tons of time and
money in their equipment are getting a little nervous. The USFS has extended the contracts for the “legacy” air tankers. That is how they refer to the remaining 1950s era P2-Vs that are currently the only heavy air tankers available. As it stands now there are only eight of them nationwide. In the Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) world there are two types of contracts administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Call When Needed (CWN) contract is just what it says; when the need arises the aircraft and crew will be placed on duty and when the need goes away they can be released. The Exclusive Use (EU) on the other hand guarantees the vendor from thirty to ninety days of availability with an option to extend. The availability and flight time costs are much less on an EU. The EU contract is a better value to the government when there is fire activity but if it a slow season they are stuck with the aircraft for the duration of the contract. Last year there were about fifteen EUs with the majority of the contracts being CWN. In 2013 the government has chosen to double the number of EU contracts to about thirty.
It remains to be seen how the sequestration will affect wildland firefighting. With budget cuts in every agency involved, it is bound to have some consequence. The USFS has already announced it would have about 500 fewer boots on the ground this summer and there have been rumors that it is the reason for the delay in the nextgeneration heavy air tankers contracts. Historically, when lives and property were threatened the suppression funds were made available. I hope by June all aircraft are on contract including the next generation heavies. Let’s all be safe out there. We lost too many fellow aerial firefighters last season. Have a prosperous season and maybe I’ll see you in the mountains.

So you want to be a SEAT pilot? by Marc Mullis Today Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) contracts require the contractor to create and implement a Safety Management System (SMS). This system covers all aspects of company activities including operations, training, safety, planning and response. Our company manual at M & M Air Service is more than six hundred pages and is very cumbersome, so we converted it to digital discs which each pilot and driver has while on contract. The contents of the disk are available for viewing on a laptop computer while in the field. This, combined with a compact scanner and printer, makes for a mobile and efficient overall system that clicks with the government’s move to a paperless system. Required content in the SMS includes a company training program for newly
hired fire pilots. As our company’s Fire Instructor Pilot, I was tasked with developing and administering this program. It consists of twenty-five hours of classroom interaction and twenty-five hours of flight time in one of our Air Tractor AT-802 air tankers. The applicant must meet the minimum experience requirements listed in the contract. It usually takes between ten days and two weeks for a pilot to complete the course, depending on weather and the learning curve of the student. Mornings are spent in the classroom and afternoons in the cockpit. Each item in the curriculum must be covered through the course of the program. In early March I received a phone call from fellow Texan, Todd Landry. After introducing himself, he explained he had spoken with with our company
T-424 getting a load at the Ft. Stockton SEAT Base.

agairupdate.com
owner about a job as a SEAT pilot and had been instructed to contact me about attending our training program. He said he had been flying an AT-802 in the State Department’s drug spraying eradication program in South America and had grown weary of being shot at by the drug cartels. After comparing schedules, we agreed on a date to meet in Ft. Stockton, Texas (FST) to begin the training. Ft. Stockton is where we hangar our SEAT aircraft and is also close to mountainous terrain which would be needed for some of the simulated fire operations. The office in the hangar also serves as a classroom. A few weeks later Todd arrived at FST on a Friday afternoon. After he checked into a hotel, we had dinner and discussed the upcoming day’s work schedule. I supplied him with a copy of the current
Call When Needed (CWN) contract and instructed him to look through it when he returned to the hotel room. Our step with training the next morning would be contract content. The contract is the bible we operate under and a complete understanding of its contents is vital to a new SEAT pilot. Saturday morning Todd and I met in the office to go over the contract item by item. After a morning of delving into the finite wording of the contract, we moved onto aircraft familiarization. Tanker 424 was used for the training and Todd spent the next few hours getting used to the placement of switches and radio operations. Per contract, all company aircraft must have consistent locations of all pertinent controls. A pilot moving from one aircraft to another should have no problem with orientation. The rest of the afternoon was spent with Todd flying the aircraft and getting used to its feel and operation. The student was given more material to study upon his return to his hotel room. As day two dawned, we were in the classroom discussing a long list of subjects that included fuel types, fire behavior, incident command system, airspace over a fire, radio procedures and much more. The morning sessions went by fast as Todd was very interested in learning all he could and asked a lot of questions. Incorporated into the sessions were videos, many of them taken over
actual fires that included audio between the various aircraft. These are important learning tools because they give the student a feel for what it is like to be operating in the fire traffic area. After lunch we moved into the cockpit to learn about the operation of the hydraulic gate system. We discussed coverage levels versus line length and emergency procedures in case of a malfunction. Todd spent the afternoon dropping loads of water to develop his accuracy skills and getting used to the aircraft pitching up when the load is released. Most agpilots have never practiced dumping a full load from their aircraft. If not prepared for the effect, loss of control is possible. Todd started with a small load and gate opening and progressed up to a full load and maximum coverage level. When the gate is opened to its widest deflection, its aerodynamics add to the pitching of the aircraft. I placed a barrel by the runway for a target and we went to work. With a radio in hand, I stood near the barrel and gave Todd tips on altitude and start points. By the end of the day he had it down pat. As the days progressed, the missions became more complex and realistic. After nailing accuracy and altitude, we advanced to splitting loads. Oftentimes SEAT pilots are asked to put one load of retardant on more than one target. I have split one load into as many as six drops. This can be accomplished with
the computer on the gate controller, but I wanted Todd to be able to master the split procedure manually. It is a skill that only comes with practice. After our morning classroom sessions I always give a briefing on the afternoon’s activity. Having covered all the basics, it was time to start flying on simulated fires. For these missions, I served as dispatch and aerial supervision using my experimental RV-4 as an aerial platform. I could select the location for the simulation by going to Google Earth™ and select a latitude and longitude in suitable terrain. I filled out an aircraft dispatch form, handed it to Todd and timed him on how long it took him to set up his aircraft with frequencies and lat-long positions. Our first few missions were carried out in relatively flat terrain. I played the part of Air Tactical Group Supervisor or Air Attack. Without actual smoke and flames on the ground, it can be very difficult to convey a target description to the student, so I used physical features such as roads and fence lines for targets. Mission after mission was flown with each one becoming more difficult for Todd. Distractions such as frequency mix-ups and diversions became the norm, along with the terrain becoming more extreme. As we moved into the mountains, my role switched from Air Attack to Lead Plane. With a Lead Plane the tanker pilot doesn’t have to receive a

target description, you just follow Lead and he shows you where to put the retardant. I had made arrangements with the Texas Forest Service to send engine crews out to our simulations and participate in our training. However, at the last minute they had other priorities arise. Even so, I did my best to make each mission as realistic as possible.
The RV-4 used for an aerial supervision platform during the training.
After we had completed each item in the curriculum, I issued Todd a completion certificate. He and I both felt assured that he was now ready for a real fire mission. He had already attended the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) training program in Boise, Idaho and completed the required online tests. All that remains with his carding process is an oral exam and check-ride with an inspector from the Office of Aircraft Services (OAS). Upon completing these items, he will be issued a Level II card, which will allow him to serve as an apprentice for one year. After twentyfive successful documented missions he will receive a Level I card, which will allow him to fly initial attack missions.

When I first entered the National SEAT program many years ago there was no required training to be carded. If you had the proper credentials and could pass the oral and check-ride you were in. I was carded in Buckeye, Arizona one day and flying on a fire in New Mexico the next day. I could fly the airplane, but knew nothing about the fire aviation world other than what I had learned on my own. It was truly on the job training. Soon after that, the BLM initiated the National SEAT Academy in Safford, Arizona. It was better than nothing, but was not a really good learning environment. After several years of trying to make it work, the BLM abandoned it and shifted all initial training to individual vendors. This change has been a huge success and seems to be getting better each year.
Aerial fire control in Chile, in a big way by Bill Lavender In Chile, forest fire protection is big business. In order to do it, a fleet of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft is required if a company is going to participate in fighting these wildland and urban interface fires. Fumigacion Aereas Analusa Sociedad Agronima (FAASA) is one of the major aviation companies in Chile that private forestry plantations depend on to protect their forest from fires. Grupo FAASA was founded in Spain in 1945 by Sebastion Almagro. Then, the company started with a Pawnee and Ag-Cat for crop spraying. As less crops were being sprayed, Almagro expanded the business into aerial firefighting in 1966. He started with Puma and Super Huey helicopters. Today, FAASA has over 60 operational bases in Spain, with its primary base in Palma del Rio in the province of Cordoba and employes over 300. Of these, just over 100 are pilots; 4-5 engineers, 6-7 supervisors and 20 mechanics. FAASA operates a fleet of more than 65 aircraft of which seven are AT-802s. Five of those are dual cockpit models. The rest of
their fleet are helicopters: Bell 212, 222, 412, Augusta 119 Koala (24) and three Kamovs. Three of these nearly 60 helicopters are outfitted as med-evac units.
Grupo FAASA Chile employees over 100 people: one engineer, five supervisors, 18 mechanics and 42 pilots. In 2006, FAASA expanded its firefighting operations into Chile forming Grupo FAASA Chile. A portion of the Spanish fleet travels to Chile to work fires from November to April. This compliments the Spanish fire season that runs from May to October. Five AT-802s, of which four are dual cockpit models, are ferried from Spain to the Chilean base at the Carriel Sur International Airport in Concepcion, 500 km south of the capital city of Santiago. They are never all ferried at the same time. Twenty-one helicopters are shipped on different ships with a minimum of 15 days between shippings, protecting the
(R) Jaime Lopez Bubert has been with FAASA for five years after working as a spray pilot flying an AT-802. Today, he flies very little, mostly as a back up pilot. He is kept busy managing the pilots and day to day operations of the company. Along with Jaime is Francisco Carrasco Contereras, who is the Logistics and Spares Manager. He resolves issues and provides solutions. He is also responsible for importing parts, speciality tools and aircraft.

Grupo FAASA Chile employees over 100 people: one engineer, five supervisors, 18 mechanics and 42 pilots. All pilots work in Spain during its fire season. The pilots flight time is regulated by the Chilean DGAC (FAA). No more than 12 hours on call are allowed with only eight of those being flight hours. The pilots are allowed a maximum of 30 consecutive days of being on call before they are required to take a 12-day off duty rest. FAASA pilots are required to have a minimum of 1,000 flight hours and an aerial firefighting certificate. The company has an ongoing training program that each pilot must participate in annually. Training is done at the Spanish primary base, Palma del Rio. A FAASA-owned company, C.A.E.N.A. (Compania de Enseñanza Aeronautica) can train a pilot from his first flight to the aerial firefighting cockpit.

The pilots are allowed a maximum of 30 consecutive days of being on call before they are required to take a 12-day off duty rest. FAASA, Chile or Spain, no longer conducts any crop spraying. It is solely an aerial firefighting company. In Chile, the company has three, major clients and CONAF (Corporacion Nacional Forestal, the Chilean government’s firefighting department). Chile has over 16 million hectares of forests. There are over 2,250,000 hectares of privately owned forest plantation, primarily owned by three private companies. The forests that FAASA is responsible for are through the center of Chile from Concepcion to Santiago. The lakes of Chilean are not conducive for the AT-802 Fire Boss, so FAASA flies from about 15 remote
bases. The helios use a Bambi bucket, dipping water from lakes and reservoirs. Sometimes, a heli-tank is used and filled with pumps. Each base has a 200,000 liter water reservoir with fuel tanks mounted on trucks and living quarters for the pilots and ground crew. It is necessary for the pilot that is on duty to stay near the aircraft. He is required to be in the air within seven minutes of the fire call. Each forestry client has an operations center with watch towers strategically placed in the forests. When a fire is spotted, the pilot is called directly and given the coordinates. The client decides if the pilot uses water or foam, depending on the size of the fire. If the fire is large enough, the client will require the use of a retardant. The type of aircraft used depends on where the fire is located, using the aircraft that is the closest. Each aircraft is tracked in real time by FAASA using GPS and cell phone connectivity. Managing over 65 aircraft from more than 75 bases of operation in two countries can no doubt be challenging. Grupo FAASA’s Spain and Chile operations have been doing it successfully for many years. It recognized the need for aerial fire protection decades ago and has since grown into one of the world’s leading aerial firefighting companies. FAASA Chile based at Concepcion, operates form a modern facility.

The “custom” in Custom Air, Inc. by Bill Lavender Ag-pilots are known for their innovation; custom building improvements to their equipment that is vital to their day to day operations. The industry thrives on that innovation, as well as reliability and efficiency. Often, when an ag-pilot sees where he can make a change to improve, he exercises his innovation. The results more often than not are changes that will benefit him and his fellow ag-pilots. Michael Hutchins started working at Custom Air, Inc. directly out of high school in 1991. The company was then owned and operated by Jim McKown in Roe, Arkansas. McKown had formed Custom Air, Inc. in 1974 and like so many other operators, was challenged by that era’s Thrush tailwheel. The tailwheel was, as some would say, missing the reliability and efficiency required of multiple, loaded takeoff and landings made daily working rice in central eastern Arkansas. McKown designed and built a single-arm style tailwheel that was superior to the yoke type tailwheels found on Thrush
aircraft in the 1980s. The Custom Air, Inc. tailwheel gave a solid ride with no shimmy. The side hub cap helped keep fertilizer and other contaminants out of the wheel bearings. When Michael Hutchins came to work for McKown, he had no aspirations to fly ag. At the time, he was attending college at Arkansas State University working toward a degree in Education. However, it wasn’t long after being around agplanes that he was bit by ag aviation. As good fortune would have it, Michael’s brother-in-law, David Strohl, was flying ag at Custom Air, Inc. He taught Michael how to fly and soloed him in 1994. In 1996, Michael flew his first season in a 600 Thrush. The following year, McKown moved him into a 1989 model 510 Thrush. Michael moved back after college and worked full-time with McKown at Custom Air, Inc. He expanded his flying experience by helping other operators throughout the country during his off season.
By welding a second reinforcement strap to the Custom Air Tailwheel, the STC was amended in November 2012 to include Thrush aircraft with a gross weight up to 10,500 pounds.

In 2007, Michael’s life took an unexpected turn; McKown was injured in an ag-plane. Michael was already in the process of buying Custom Air, Inc. and its tailwheel STC over an extended period. The accident accelerated this purchase and Michael finalized the purchase of the company in 2007. All of Michael’s previous experience working under McKown and flying for various operators in different types of ag-aircraft came together that first year as sole owner of Custom Air, Inc. Michael, being an innovative guy, started designing improvements for items he considered problems with his ag-aircraft.
Out of necessity, Michael Hutchins modified the Air Tractor T-boom connections on the AT-802 and AT-602 to a rigid tube. This sped up the spreader change over by eliminating sway bars.
After flying forestry work in an AT-602, Michael met John Schwank of Aero Spray in Appleton, Minnesota through a nearby friend, Darrin Henry. This was Michael’s entry into aerial fire fighting. He trained for aerial firefighting in both Boise, Idaho and Stafford, Arizona. Michael’s first aerial firefighting job was in 2005; seeding with an AT-802 in St. George, Utah.

He also realized with the higher gross weight Thrush aircraft, he needed to update the Thrush tailwheel STC. As recently as last November, Custom Air, Inc. received an amendment for the tailwheel STC to accommodate the 10,500-pound gross weight Thrush. Now, the tailwheel is licensed for all model Thrush aircraft, except the 550 and 660 series. Michael turned his other innovations into realities as well. Operating an AT-802, along with a 510 Thrush, he noticed when flying the AT-802 the windshield wiper would float at high speeds and not clean the windshield. He designed a deflector with a blade adapter that would keep the wiper blade firmly on the windshield and accept automotive-type wiper blades. The more Michael worked with the Air Tractor, the more innovative ideas developed. Wanting more out of his tow bar,

he designed a tow ring that would double for a jack point on the gear leg making it easier to service tires. With rice work, often the spreader is changed several times a day; time being of the essence. The Air Tractor’s spreader attachment points required several steps to attach and remove the spreader. Michael designed a rigid tube that extends from the belly to the attach point of the spreader, eliminating the need for sway bars. This considerably sped up attaching and removing the spreader. When traveling to help other operators spray corn in the Midwest, or for a firefighting contract, Michael saw a need for a radio cabinet. From that, Michael designed a custom built cabinet for GE Aviation aircraft radios. An operator can describe the type radios he wants in the cabinet and the type aircraft and Michael will design and build one. The cabinet exposes only the face of the radios, antenna coax cable and incoming power supply wiring. It can easily be removed when selling the aircraft and will fit like-kind replacement aircraft. Typical radios that are installed in the cabinet are a 560 Garmin GPS, audio panel, business band comm and a cell phone adapter. Often, particularly with firefighting aircraft, a transponder and second comm radio are added. At heart, Michael Hutchins is an ag-operator. He just likes to improve the aircraft he uses at Custom Air, Inc.

The firefighting version AT-802 has the Vondran fire gate. Michael developed and shared with Vondran the original software that controls the hydraulic gate. Michael used a 510 Thrush for his test bed. “The 802 will undoubtedly do a lot of work when it comes to row crops,” explains Michael. “However, if I am asked to pick the aircraft I like flying the best, it is the 510.” Even so, Michael primarily flies the AT-802 for row crop work, while Cleo King flies the AT-802 for firefighting. Clay Able, who has been with Custom Air, Inc. for four seasons, flies the 510 Thrush. The administrative work is carried out by Michelle Bueker.
A wiper blade deflector for high speed aircraft like the AT-802. It keeps the blade firmly on the windshield and accepts a generic blade. Until 2010, the company had operated primarily two, 510 Thrushes. With the addition of firefighting contracts, an AT802 was added to the fleet in 2010, replacing one of the 510 Thrushes. After two seasons of alternating the AT-802 between firefighting and row crop work, this winter a second AT-802 was added to the fleet that will be dedicated to row crop work, while the other will be exclusively for firefighting.
Custom Air, Inc.’s season starts in February. In the first two months, about 100 hours in the AT-802 and 75 hours in the 510 Thrush are flown spreading fertilizer on wheat and spraying glyphosate on rice and corn ground. Compared to operators only 25 miles south of Roe, Custom Air, Inc. does relatively little burn down applications. In late April, herbicide applications begin on rice, applied at 10 GPA. However, it is May, June and July that are the busiest months with fertilizer and fungicide applications on rice. Rice growers typically apply three to four applications of fertilizer throughout the summer, followed by one or two applications of fungicide and/or insecticide.

When rice flying has ended, soybean spraying becomes a “big deal” with applications to treat insects and fungi. Usually, at least one fungicide application will be made and up to two insecticide applications for caterpillars and/or stinkbugs, resulting in two or three applications over soybeans. There is no cotton work near Roe. By September, the season comes to a close, leaving the winter months for Michael to work on his ag-plane improvement projects.

Bridge the consumeragriculture divide with these tools from NAAA Are consumers buying what production agriculture is selling? In the literal sense, the answer is yes, but according to research conducted by the United States Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (USFRA), the general public has been largely unreceptive to traditional ag industry messaging and skeptical of modern farming practices. More than conquerors through faith in Jesus Christ “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered” (Romans 8:35-36).
Nothing can separate a Christian from Jesus Christ’s love for us, not even the worst problems of our earthly life nor the worst sins we commit in our earthly life—not even our physical death. God said to the people of Israel, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). Nothing can break the bond of love between Jesus Christ and His church.

Jesus Christ’s love for us is more certain than that the sun will shine tomorrow morning. Someday we will not need the sun (Revelation 21:23, 22:5), but Jesus Christ will still love us. If you ever doubt Jesus Christ’s love for us, just remember, He died for sinners like you and me (Romans 5:6-8).
God’s Holy Spirit. By faith we take up the whole armor of God, so we can withstand all the attacks of our sinful nature, this evil world and Satan (Ephesians 6:10-20). Jesus said, “The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mark 14:38). We are more than conquerors when empowered by God’s Holy Spirit.
Then Paul said, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Christians have the temptations of our sinful nature, the temptations of this sinful world and the temptations that Satan throws at us. Christians have physical sicknesses, physiological struggles, family problems, financial struggles and many other problems. But we don’t walk around with a defeated attitude, we come out boldly, living a godly life and witnessing for Jesus Christ. How? By faith we believe that every problem is refining us and making us spiritually stronger. By faith we hate sin and love righteousness, because we see how sin destroys people’s lives. By faith we yield our earthly body to be controlled by
Peter and John went to the temple to pray and God used them to heal a lame man. The people gathered around and Peter began to preach about Jesus Christ. The Pharisees and Sadducees heard about the healing and preaching and had Peter and John arrested. These Jewish leaders questioned John and Peter about how this miracle was performed and Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said it was Jesus Christ who healed this man. These Jewish leaders couldn’t deny the miracle, but they told the apostles not to speak in Jesus’ name again (Acts 4:1-18). Peter said, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard”

(Acts 4:19-20). After they were released the apostles prayed, “Lord, look on their threats and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word…And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the Word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:23-31). The Holy Spirit gives life; the sinful flesh profits nothing (John 6:63). God kept doing wonders, miracles and healings through the apostles, and the high priest had them put in prison, but God’s angel set them free and they went back to preaching in Jesus’ name. The apostles were brought before the Jewish leaders and the apostles were told not to preach in Jesus’ name again and Peter said, “We ought to obey God rather than men…The apostles were beaten, and they went away rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for Jesus Christ” (Acts 5:12-42). These apostles were led and empowered by God’s Holy Spirit and became more than conquerors for Jesus Christ in their earthly life.
With the exception of Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul is more responsible for what Christianity has meant to this world than any other person in church history. Paul never went to seminary, he never studied missions or church growth and yet Paul took the gospel of Jesus Christ to Asia (modern day Turkey), Greece, Italy and other places along the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea and possibly into Spain (Romans 15:24-28). How did Paul accomplish God’s purposes for his life? Paul was consumed by his love for Jesus Christ, his love for Jesus’ church, and he was empowered by God’s Holy Spirit. Paul was beaten, put in prisons, shipwrecked and suffered from hunger and thirst (2 Corinthians 11:22-33). When Paul was told he would be taken prisoner if he went to Jerusalem, Paul said, “I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 21:13). The only way this evil world can keep a man like the apostle Paul from teaching the good news of Jesus Christ is kill him—which is what happened. But Paul’s words lived on in the Bible!

Is your relationship with Jesus Christ a dull rule keeping experience; or is your relationship with Jesus Christ one of intense and exciting passion like the apostle Paul? Is your relationship with Jesus Christ just a dull habit of going to church on Sunday? Or is your love for Jesus Christ passionate and demonstrated in your everyday life? Are you afraid you will lose your earthly riches, power, prestige and importance if you are a powerful witness for Jesus Christ? If your love for Jesus Christ isn’t growing every day, then it is becoming less every day. If your love for Jesus Christ is based upon rule keeping it will eventually die out. But if your love for Jesus Christ is driven by the power of God’s Holy Spirit it will be a raging fire, and nothing can put it out. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow Me (Matthew 16:24). Henry Martine said, “O that I were a flame of fire in the hand of God.” Live like you will stand before God—because someday you will (Hebrews 10:27).

The key to survival is meeting the cash flow requirements of your business. For the commercial aircraft operator, this means evaluating the financials of each aircraft in the operation. Concentrate on your cash flow and the calculation of Return on Investment (ROI). Prepare budgets and financial plans for each aircraft in your fleet. How?
Preparing a sound financial plan requires the projection of cash flow. Review the expenses on each aircraft over the last several years. Identify any large upcoming cash requirements or expenses (aircraft improvements, overhauls, special inspections, etc.) for each aircraft. Will cash be available to pay the large expenditures? If not, then additional capital will be required. Project the normal annual fixed expenses as well as the hourly operating expenses. Be especially careful to adjust expenses that might change significantly. Examples could be fuel or increased aircraft maintenance expenses due to aircraft being out of warranty or just being an older aircraft. Evaluate the revenue of each aircraft. aircraft ownership expenses? Were the annual utilization hours and hourly rate high enough to cover the fixed expenses as well as the variable expenses? Are adjustments in rates or utilization required to maintain a profit? Identify any areas where adjustments are required to survive. Analyze the financial impact that different scenarios produce in your business. Concentrate on the cash flow of each aircraft you operate. To answer the financial impact question, compare the after-tax cash flow of keeping your present aircraft against trading for another aircraft. The after-tax cash flow analysis should consider: capital expenditures, down payment, principal and interest payments or lease payments, fixed expenses, hourly
expenses, major upcoming expenses, warranty, utilization, depreciation, tax rate, revenues and resale value. Use a financial model to simulate the cash flows by varying different items that have major impacts on cash. Use Net Present Value (NPV) to provide the relative values of the different cash flows in today's dollars. Remember; concentrate on what you can control and seize any opportunities. AircraftCostAnalysis is a financial model that can perform this type of analysis. It will save you many hours of building and checking the math in your own financial model. See www. in my opinion
Should not happen Recently one of our students received an email from an ag-pilot buddy of his (I will just call him John) saying that he had a near miss with another ag-plane. As it was told to me, John was just lifting off in his Ag-Cat with a heavy load of fertilizer when an Air Tractor ferrying from XYZ airport at approximately 150’ AGL flew right over the departure end of the runway in use. John said he had to make a sudden, radical turn and descent
to avoid a midair collision. John thought he knew who the pilot/operator was and called him when he returned from his mission. The pilot he called denied even flying close to John’s airport. Maybe this pilot was lying or maybe not. I guess it really doesn’t matter.
When I hear of stories like this, it makes me angry. I have had a few near misses. I guess all of us have. Some of the near misses occurred from another pilot ferrying dangerously low like mentioned herein and another one in particular when a rogue ag-pilot was making a low, high speed fly-by for his buddies on the loading crew. Regardless of the circumstances, I think it may be time to open up a can of “whoop-ass”. However, at my age I’d probably be on

the receiving end, so that may not be such a good idea. The only real recourse is to report it to the FAA, but I simply am not going to do that. Doing something like the last mentioned incident, In My Opinion, is inconsiderate of other pilots, apathetic and just plain stupid! Aside from the fact that it is illegal, if an FAA inspector were to observe any of these flyers, they’d be working as the loader and not the pilot. Dallas • Hyannis • Pittsburgh

So what’s the answer? I don’t have one. At Flying Tiger, we have our own little “Compaass Rose” session once a week. We have kicked the matter back a forth at length. One of the suggestions from a student was at the NAAA Compaass Rose session would be to determine if attendees would be willing to make a vow not to do something stupid in your ag plane and not to ferry less than 500’ unless circumstances dictate otherwise and you can still be safe. Midair collisions happen and aside from the tragedy of losing a father, husband, brother, friend, etc. and two airplanes, it makes me very angry ‘cause it should not have happened!

Potential health and environmental concerns make reducing pesticide spray drift a priority for the OPP. Applicators should prepare now for new protocols that will rate pesticide products, spray equipment and spray techniques according to drift reduction capabilities.
complex decisions Choosing the right spray nozzles and determining the correct nozzle spacing, boom height, boom pressure and application volume all come into play when aerial applicators work to keep products on target to achieve optimal results. But time and weather aren’t always on their side. “Aerial applicators work in a time-sensitive industry and have to manage their work very efficiently — from setting up their spray boom to managing the volume of liquid they will apply to an acre,” says Lillian Magidow, technical lead at the WinField Product Development Center, River Falls, Wisconsin. “The best applicators are always looking across the whole system to make strategic choices.” One major reason for drift from aerial spraying is non-optimal spray droplet size; specifically, very fine droplets don’t have enough heft to reach the crop, she explains. Fine droplets can be reduced with nozzle choice and boom setup, but simply producing larger droplets does not eliminate the problem. Large droplets can shatter apart into fine droplets when exposed to wind shear in the aircraft wake.

“For insecticides and fungicides, aerial applicators will want to choose a setup that delivers a finer droplet spectrum,” says Magidow. “Unfortunately, that carries a high risk of drift. With an herbicide application, you can use a coarser spray and still get good control. Applicators are always having to balance spray efficacy with drift management.” Several strategies can help applicators prepare for the expected changes to current regulations.
operation S.A.F.E. Administered by the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF), Operation S.A.F.E. helps applicators fine-tune and recalibrate spray systems. At S.A.F.E. Fly-In clinics, applicators can have their equipment professionally analyzed for pattern uniformity and droplet size. S.A.F.E. analysts recommend changes to improve aircraft performance; then pilots can run immediate follow-up tests to ensure their systems are set up correctly. “Pilots who participate in S.A.F.E. clinics receive an evaluation of the droplet spectrum being delivered by their airplanes,” says Dennis Gardisser, Ph.D., P.E., president of WRK of Arkansas, which conducts S.A.F.E. clinics, and a licensed commercial agricultural pilot. “They can see whether they are producing fine droplets prone to drift or evaporation, or too many big droplets that hurt efficacy. We help them target droplet spectrum for a specific product or mode of action.”
take a PAASS Another NAAREF program is the Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System (PAASS) program. Attendees learn about safety and drift minimization. The PAASS program works to reduce aviation accidents and drift incidents by improving aeronautical decision-making skills.
The PAASS program works to reduce aviation accidents and drift incidents by improving aeronautical decision-making skills. Scott Bretthauer, Ph.D., extension specialist with the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, University of Illinois, is a PAASS program instructor and S.A.F.E. analyst. “What we know about the new EPA regulations is certain application products are going to have a buffer zone and this zone can be reduced by using DRT,” says Bretthauer. “So far, there are more questions that are unanswered than answered, but we believe the new regulations will focus on nozzles and adjuvants to begin with.”

adjuvant advantages Adjuvants can help provide reliably uniform droplet size and increase the potential for spray droplets to land where they should within the crop canopy to provide the most protection for developing crops. One example of an adjuvant that combines deposition, canopy penetration and drift reduction is MasterLock® adjuvant by WinField. “Adjuvants help maximize the grower’s investment, especially when trying to manage tough-to-control pests,” says Magidow. “MasterLock®, for example, reduces the amount of fine particles in the spray pattern without thickening the spray. It keeps more spray droplets within the most effective size range and is wellsuited to aerial applications.” “Picking an adjuvant that will work for a specific water quality and water pH, mixing procedure, and application scenario is a bit tricky,” Gardisser says. “Adding an adjuvant to the spray isn’t a guarantee you’re going to get a reduction in drift potential. But we see that when adjuvants are properly used, applicators may get additional security against drift potential, and we encourage them to use adjuvants.”
Earning Stars One feature of the OPP DRT Program is a rating system modeled
on the United Kingdom’s Local Environment Risk Assessments for Pesticides (LERAP) system, which awards stars for decreases in fine spray relative to standard spray. In the LERAP system, no star is awarded for products that achieve less than 25 percent reduction in spray drift, but products achieving 75 to 100 percent reduction in spray drift earn up to three stars. “Applicators are expected to move to the highest-star products immediately,” says Gardisser, “because they’re doing everything they can to avoid drift. If they encounter a couple of drift issues, they may not be able to get insurance. And that could put them out of business faster than a regulation will.” The EPA’s Information Collection Request (ICR) period on the proposed regulations closed on January 22, 2013, with 28 comments received. The OPP will review and address all comments. After that, the proposal will be assessed by the Office of Management and Budget. Applicators shouldn’t wait for new regulations to be sure they’re getting the most from every application, says Bretthauer. “I recommend aerial applicators take advantage of educational and equipment-verification opportunities and pay attention to research being done on drift reduction, particularly by the USDA Agricultural Research Service Aerial Application Technology Group in College Station, Texas. That knowledge will help them select and set up their equipment now — and prepare them for what’s ahead.”

A perfect example of this was a first-of-its-kind Schweiss “Gate” built by Schweiss Doors for “The Paw,” an upscale dog and cat resort. The owner of the 27,000 sq. ft. luxury pet resort needed a room divider gate, wall if you wish, to separate a 96 ft. room in half for dog training and handling purposes. Who you gonna call? What made this Schweiss 46 ft wide, 1,500 lb. multiplefunction designer gate different was how Schweiss Doors built it to his personal gate design. Yenish wanted a quiet and smooth operating Schweiss gate that stood about head high with the top half of seethrough polycarbonate panels and below that utilized steel paneling.

This particular Schweiss gate allows humans and animals to see across to the other side of the room without having to raise the Schweiss gate. A push button control on the side wall lifts the Schweiss gate conveniently out of sight and the Schweiss gate lifts in less than a minute. Schweiss Doors designed it to lift straight up to the high ceiling, up and out of the way when not in use. Five popular patented Schweiss Bifold liftstraps and a two h.p. top-mounted Schweiss quality electric motor easily and quietly lift the Schweiss Moving Gate. The owner was absolutely needing a safe gate that would not
cause harm to humans or animals in the public facility. He also noted that it was reasonably priced and comparative in price to a pocket door, but much easier to use. He enjoyed working with the professional Schweiss design team to get this Schweiss designer gate done. The Schweiss gate now virtually gives the animal resort two rooms to work in, or when in the up position, a larger size room. “If You Can Think It — Schweiss Doors Can Build It!” Learn more about Schweiss Doors at: www.schweissdoors.com or call 800-746-8273.
The Paw, an exclusive dog and cat resort in Minnesota had Schweiss Doors install a 46 ft. liftstrap moving gate. The gate lifts to the ceiling when open and divides a 96 ft. room in half when down.

Ag Cats east and west by Bill Lavender Biggs, California and Weiner, Arkansas Back in the spring I had the pleasure of visiting with longtime Ag Cat operators, the Jones brothers, Alan (Tiger) and Dale of Chuck Jones Flying Service. They also own Ag-Viation, an ag aviation supplier and FAA Repair Station. Then this fall I was fortunate enough to visit another Ag Cat operator in Weiner, Arkansas, Craig Keller of Keller Flying Service. Both run turbine Ag Cats and both primarily work rice, but are a continent apart. Biggs, California is in the heart of northern California rice country. Chuck Jones Flying Service operates three C-Model Frakes Turbo PT6A-34s with 500 gallon hoppers and raised wings,, plus five 600 Ag Cats and a Bell Jet Ranger. The Cats fire-off in mid-April with the heaviest flying, although there
is some ag flying going on year-round. Rice makes up about 75% of the applications. This includes a preplant fertilizing of 100-200 pounds of 16-20-0 and a Furadan treatment. Almost every acre of rice is planted by air using presoaked seed. Granulated applications of Ordran, for control of water grasses, and Londax, granulated Stam, are made after the seeding. The Londax is applied at 1.6 ounces per acre on an 80-foot swath (see picture of Tiger with applicator). Applications of parathion or Blue Stone (copper sulfate) are added to the rice paddies for freshwater tadpole shrimp control. It isn’t difficult to understand the operation requires expertise in takeoffs and landings. “Bill, it’s not uncommon for our Ag Cats to takeoff and land as many as a 100 times in a day.” Tiger stated. That is probably one of the reasons the Ag Cat is a

favorite of Chuck Jones Flying Service, who not only operate the biplanes, but is a distributor, as Ag-Viation, for them as well. The flying service can stay caught up pretty good with the three Cats, but will bring in operators, outside of the 25 plus or minus agav operations in the Biggs area, to help them during the busier months. The Jones’ Cats hardly ever ferry more than two miles to a job and never fly formation. The flying service works from more

than 35 airstrips throughout an operating area five miles wide and 40 miles long. This region is bordered by the Sierras on the east and just crosses the Sacramento River to the west. They can work an entire day within two miles of where they started their day! “Everything happens real fast around here”, Dale laughingly said referring to how close in the work is. The enormous amount of flying done on rice requires an extensive flagging operation. Eight load crews, each consisting of three loaders and two flaggers plus the pilot, sometimes working 100 hours a week, can be an ag operator’s worst nightmare. Of course the ground support operation requires a few extras for the no-shows. Dale had experimented with one of the GPS electronic flagging systems, but wasn’t convinced at the time it was the best way to go. Not only do the Jones brothers operate a successful flying service and an Ag Cat distributorship, but has a maintenance shop staffed by six mechanics. The FAA approved repair station, headed by Frank Bowles, have fuselage jigs for the A, B, C, and D-Model Ag Cats. While I was there a pet project was unveiled, the fuselage of a dual cockpit Ag Cat, one day soon to be built into an Ag Cat trainer! Forthcoming will be an STC for the installation of the geared R-1340 on all 600 horsepower Ag Cats.

The tires are cut down, glue applied, wrapped with special rubber for aircraft tires, then cooked. After cooling the tires are then balanced and inspected. “We have never had in three years of recapping a total failure. I flew a 600 B-Model and comparing it to today where the C-Model Frakes Turbo’s have become a mainstay with Ag Cat operators. My, how time changes things. Then in mid-August I had the opportunity to knock on the door of a giant of a man who had been brought down by a tiny eight-legged Brown Recluse spider! Craig Keller just couldn’t get his heart into an interview with AAU; running fever, feeling like a truck had run over him. It was time to step back, reschedule and come back at a later date. That date was the following month and it was well worth the wait.
Nothing quite out turns and beats the safety of an Ag Cat Weiner, Arkansas - This visit Craig Keller was his normal self. Stepping out the door of his Arkansas home, he immediately insisted I put down my junk and come fly his Garrett powered B-Model Ag Cat, and without ever asking me when was the last time a had flown an Ag Cat (remember 14 years?). Of course I accepted the offer to fly his Ag Cat, not only had I not flown an Ag Cat in 14 years, but had not ever flown a turbine powered Ag Cat! Craig didn’t ask and I didn’t tell. Afterwards, Craig’s wife, Dixie, paid me one fine compliment by saying, “Bill, Craig has never seen his Ag Cat fly until today. I told him you fly just like he does.” Well, the Ag Cat didn’t fly bad at all. It was surprisingly fast, and of course, could turn around on spare change. It was most enjoyable, but flying Craig’s Cat wasn’t the reason for my visit.
Craig Keller reaches for the phone at his airstrip office. Circa 1993.
You may recall in the August issue of AAU there was a press release with a picture of Keller Flying Service’s new C-Model Garrett powered TPE 331-10 Ag Cat. This ag plane was supposed to have everything on it, not to mention a custom designed instrument panel by Craig Keller. The C-Model’s airframe was zero-timed by Jim Krepps of Malden Ag Craft in Malden, Missouri. The project was a complete success. Krepps test flew the aircraft July 15, 1993, proclaiming it airworthy. So, Craig and I took off in a people airplane headed for Malden

were the Ag Cat was hangared. There I got a first hand look at one awesome ag plane. The C-Model spins a four blade Hartzell prop connected to a Garrett Dash 10, 1,000 horsepower turbine engine. The C-Model airframe cradles a 600 gallon hopper furnished by Mid-Continent Aircraft and built-up by Jon Herr Fibreglass in Woodland, CA. The electronic guidance system is GPS by Del Norte. WAG is chilling Craig’s sweats with their Wag Aire air-conditioning system. The airframe has all the goodies one could possibly have on an Ag Cat raised wings, center line tall tail, Shadin flow meter, Crophawk, bottom loading fuel, custom paint with lettering, night lights, and Phillips dzus fasteners.
These two gents made it happen, (L-R) Craig Keller and Jim Krepps.
Keller Flying Service has been around since 1990 when Craig sprayed the 1,400-acre family farm, equally divided between rice and soybeans, with a 180 hp Champion Scout outfitted with a 90-gallon Sorensen spray system. Craig had always respected the performance of Ag Cats he had watched over the years working in the northeast Arkansas rice fields. So, his natural choice for a bona-fide ag plane was Ag Cat, a 1991 Queen Cat powered by a Pezetel 3-S engine with a 335-gallon hopper. The second year, in the spring of 1992, a loader accidently bumped the throttle of the Queen Cat sending the Cat spinning around in circles on the load ramp. After hanging on the wing and chasing after the Ag Cat for over an hour, the aircraft finally got away plowing into a loader truck! With spraying on the books and no time to wait on repairing the Queen Cat, Craig

bought and finished the season with a Garrett powered Dash One B-Model Ag Cat. The growth of the Keller Flying Service operation convinced Craig it was time to go to bigger iron, thus the birth of the 600 gallon C-Model Garrett Dash 10 Ag Cat. Ag Cats have served Keller Flying Service well, with the majority of the work within a seven mile radius and more than 90% of it rice, meaning a lot of dry work. The wet work is mostly herbicide on rice controlling grass with Stam at 10 gallons per acre application rate. Craig uses the CP Nozzle for his wet work. I questioned Craig about his decision to buy an Ag Cat and power it with a Garrett engine. “Bill, I feel real comfortable with the Ag Cat and its safety record. I can get into small tight fields by slowing down the Ag Cat. Most of my work is close-in, so long ferries aren’t a problem. “I decided to go with the Garrett engine because I had gotten real good service from my Dash 6 Garrett on my B-Model. I like the feel of instant power when I advance the throttle. My strip is only 1,400 feet long, so I wanted an ag plane that could get off the ground quickly, turn around just as quick, and be comfortable to fly,” Craig explained. He continued by telling about one of the reasons he felt he got good service from his turbine engine, information that would benefit any turbine operator, was his Power King APU.

made its intro in the late 50s and early 60s, often replacing a Stearman. It became famous for its performance and safety. Since then several new ag planes have become popular in the agav industry. However, the biplane Ag Cat is still a vital tool for select operators, especially those with short strips and small fields. I am seeing more and more farmer-owned flying services. Keller Flying Service is one of these. There are arguments on both sides of the coin, from the dedicated spraying services to the farmer affiliated ones. The advantages are obvious for the farmer spraying operations. I'm not going to try to settle these arguments, it's just the nature of the industry.

by Olivia Thomas John Maynard Keynes, widely regarded as the most influential economist of the 20th century, once said, “The importance of money flows from it being a link between the present and the future.” Agricultural aviation rarely focuses on the immediate future, instead concentrating on the long-term goals of increased plant health and higher yields. As a connection between the present and the future, aerial application undoubtedly benefits the United States economy: agriculture accounts for 1.5% of the national gross domestic product, which reached $15.1 trillion in 2012 and of this percentage, more than 15% directly results from agricultural aviation. These numbers show that agricultural aviation adds over $30 billion to the U.S. economy. This is done through not only its influence on higher yields, but also on the aircraft manufacturing, chemical and insurance industries, as well as many smaller related fields. Aerial application noticeably plays a large role in the largest economy in the world. In order to apply chemicals, aerial applicators operations

must first invest in an efficient, reliable aircraft. This demand supports the aircraft manufacturers in the U.S. An example of this would be Air Tractor Incorporated, located in Olney, Texas. They are scheduled to build 190 airplanes in 2013, half of which will be sold domestically. At an average price of $900,000, these products will generate over $170 million in sales. In addition, 280 people are employed in its operations. Due to agricultural aviation, aircraft manufacturers pour funds into the local and national economies through employee wages, business investments and taxes. The next component of the aerial application business is the products that it uses. These products provide substantial yield increases and improve plant health. The chemicals, which come in the forms of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, are painstakingly designed to offer maximum protection and support for crops in the United States. Chemical companies spend billions of dollars in research, testing and marketing of these products. BASF, just one example of a chemical corporation, spent an estimated $2.28 billion in research and development projects in 2012 alone. As a global corporation, much of this money entered the U.S. economy through local testing, licensing, marketing and wages. In the United States, agricultural aviation applies approximately $300-500 million worth of chemicals each year. Corporations, aerial applicators and farmers all draw financial benefits from the use of these chemicals, which increases the flow of money in the U.S. economy.

In addition to these dominant industries, agricultural aviation also supports several smaller areas. Aerial application is often used for the treatment of mosquitoes in areas where West Nile Virus is a concern. In 2012, $1 million was spent by Dallas County, Texas, in an effort to reduce the number of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Agricultural flight schools, as well as national and state associations, increase public awareness of aerial application and may stimulate the flow of money in local economies. Research organizations such as the USDA Agricultural Research Service invest significant amounts of money into the exploration and development of subjects pertinent to aerial application. Finally, agricultural aviation supports small businesses and individuals providing parts, mechanical service and aircraft maintenance to aerial applicators.

Unfortunately, agricultural aviation involves its share of risks. This necessitates the purchase of aircraft, liability and drift insurance. Nation Air is one insurer of agricultural aircraft, providing national coverage for agricultural aircraft worth over $100 million. This coverage allows aerial applicators to increase crop yields by applying chemicals efficiently and effectively while having financial protection against accidents or lawsuits. Through this business interaction between aerial applicators and insurance companies, the economic flow of money continues. Insurance premiums become wages and taxes, which in turn stimulate local economies across the nation.

As the financial benefits of aerial application continue to be realized, it is evident that agricultural aviation has a significant economic impact in the United States: aerial application accounts for more than 15% of the agricultural economy. Through the support of agricultural aviation, industries specializing in aircraft manufacturing, chemicals and insurance are able to make an impact on local and national economies. In addition, smaller businesses and enterprises receive business from aerial
applicators, which stimulate small-scale flows of money. Agricultural aviation, which works to increase crop yields, is an exception to the norm in this age of instant gratification. However, it is this link from the present to the future that gives the industry value and enables it to play an important role in the entire U.S. economy Editior’s note: Olivia was sponsored by and is the daughter of Troy and Ellen Thomas.
DRP-955 opens doors for Davidon by Bill Lavender When David Chancy started his ag flying service in 1966 in Dooly County, Georgia, the Hutchison 235 Pawnee was king. When he got behind in cotton spraying, simply adding another Pawnee would get the job done. Drift and pattern accuracy were just not as important during that time period. Fast forward nearly 30 years: the Pawnee is gone, replaced by larger aircraft and the need to put the application on target, accurately, is priority number one. In 1995, David incorporated Davidon for the manufacture of DRP-955 adjuvant and the Hi-Tek atomizer. These two products addressed an area in the aerial application business that David felt needed improvement, application accuracy. Five years earlier, David had started the research and development to bring DRP955 and the Hi-Tek Rotary atomizer to

the marketplace. All of this was done from his base of operation in Dooley County, where today, these products are still manufactured with a close watch on quality control. This in-house production also gives Davidon the ability to be responsive to the customer’s needs and suggestions for product improvements. DRP-955 is a highly efficient adjuvant. Its seven proprietary ingredients make it the all-in-one adjuvant for the aerial and ground applicator. DRP-955 acts as an anti-evaporant to reduce spray drift. This places more chemical on the target, thereby increasing deposition. Due to this and DRP-955’s UV protection and bonding ability, the application is more effective. Davidon contracted with a retired chemist to help develop DRP955, using David’s firsthand experience as an aerial applicator as a guideline. In August 2000, Davidon received its U.S. Patent for DRP-955.
DRP-955 is a true solution adjuvant and comes in 2.5 gallon plastic containers. It works as a drift retardant, penetrator, spreader, sticker and UV protector. Davidon, Inc. is capable of producing up to 250 gallons a day.

Studies at the University of Georgia have indicated a 20% increase in deposition when using DRP-955. Real world testimonies from pilots claim no longer is spray deposition on the windscreen a problem during return spray passes. DRP-955 is labeled in all states except California. It does not clog nozzles and will not turn into a clabber-like mix, even if it is overdosed. It is a true solution product that stays mixed. One gallon of DRP-955 will treat 200 gallons of solution at an applied rate of three GPA or less by air and 512 gallons when used by a ground rig In some tank mixes, the addition of a surfactant may be required.
(L-R) Rick Barnes of sales and marketing and Davidon president, David Chancy, present a table displaying Davidon products. On the far left and right are 2.5-gallon containers of DRP-955. Left to right across the top; stainless steel tubing for the boom attach kit, five Tri-Set nozzles, five stainless steel drop tubes, a boom bracket kit with T-Jet check valve and flow controller with red quarter turn handle. Left to right across the bottom; 3” and 2-2.5” boom clamps, disassembled Hi-Tek atomizer, two assembled Hi-Tek atomizers, Custom Boom System aluminum boom blank with welded, CNC milled ends.
Regardless how good an adjuvant is, to be effective it has to be applied with an equally good nozzle or atomizer. When David formulated DRP-955, he realized he needed to improve the way the product exited the aircraft’s booms. This led the way to the development of the Hi-Tek rotary atomizer. The Hi-Tek rotary atomizer has industrial Delrin® (an acetal homopolymer that

bridges the gap between metal and ordinary plastic) turbine blades and an aerodynamic aluminum housing. In its third generation, it has six turbine-like fan blades to turn the unit while in flight. These blades have less vibration and a more consistent RPM than previous generations. Even though the unit only turns approximately 6,500 RPM, the sealed bearings are 24,000 RPM-rated. All components that contact spray material is made of stainless steel. The Hi-Tek atomizer attaches to a Spraying Systems’ 1/4” T-Jet check valve. Each unit can provide flow rates up to 3.9 GPM. Depending on the type aircraft, typically 12-16 units are installed, equally spaced with half of the units on each boom. Analyses have shown an exception with the Ag-Cat where the inboard unit on the right boom has to be adjusted inward. The atomizers create very little drag on the aircraft. The outlet of the ¼” T-jet body accepts a 1/4” tube and a quarter turn ball valve assembly. The modified ball valve works
as a flow controller. When turned, the flow rate can be reduced to an amount determined by the customer, since each ball valve is drilled to order. The droplet size and spectrum is set by the rotating speed of the atomizer and the screen grid sizes; numbers 10, 15 and 20 mesh. The atomizers require a minimum airspeed of 100 MPH. Obtaining the optimum rotation speed of 6,000-6,500 RPM is done by using the Davidon boom attach kit. The kit allows for various positioning of the atomizer on the boom to take advantage of the effect of the slipstream. The kit also includes the flow control valve. Droplet sizes ranges between 300-325 micron with very few “fines” below 100 microns. Davidon also offers a mosquito atomizer that produces 40 micron droplets. The atomizer is very low maintenance. It requires greasing through a Zerk-like fitting every 100 hours with a “OO” grease. The atomizers come with a one-year warranty and are rebuildable. Customers can send in their atomizers
for a complete “Preventive Maintenance” inspection and replacement of necessary parts that gives the atomizer a new one-year warranty. Customers with second generation Hi-Tek atomizers can return theirs for an upgrade to the third generation model. When marketing the Hi-Tek atomizer, David realized not every operator needed or wanted a rotary atomizer. With this in mind, he developed the Tri-Set nozzle. This is a flat fan nozzle with three orifices; .062, .078 and .125 with three deflection angles; 0°, 22.5° and 45°. This combination of orifice sizes and deflection angles provides the operator a wide choice of droplet sizes and delivery rates. A unique feature of the Tri-Set nozzle is the design of the deflector plate. As the liquid exits the orifice, it “slides” along the deflector plate before entering the slipstream. The Tri-Set nozzle body is made of industrial Delrin® plastic, too. All the metal, except a brass retaining nut, is made of stainless steel. A Viton® seal

boom system on the aircraft, Davidon decided to build custom booms for its products. The boom is made from 20’ lengths of extruded aluminum blank. The CNC milled ends slide over the boom before being welded, insuring a secure fit. The interior of the boom has two reinforcement areas that can accept full thread contact for the atomizer boom attach kit and nozzles. The reinforced areas are located along the trailing edge and midway between the leading and trailing edges of the boom. Knowing time equates to money in the aerial application business, Davidon designed a boom clamp that is robust and quick with one simple pull-to-open movement. This greatly increased the speed it took to remove and replace the boom. The Hi-Tek rotary atomizer in its assembled and disassembled state. is used between the body and the deflection plate. The nozzle comes with a one-year warranty. The Tri-Set nozzle has been extensively tested at Texas A&M through the USDA’s Agricultural Research Station (ARS. See http://apmru.usda.gov/aerial/HomePage.htm). The highly favorably test results are posted on the ARS web site. As one successful product followed another, it was only natural for Davidon to find other ways of improvements that complimented DRP-955, the Hi-Tek atomizer and the Tri-Set nozzle. Because the atomizers and nozzles are mounted to a
“If it requires a ground crew 10 minutes to unscrew all the boom clamps and screw them back on in a change out and this is done three times a day, the operator loses a half hour. In the course of a 100-day season, that is at least 50 hours of downtime on the ground,” explains Chancy. “Furthermore, the pilot can easily see from the cockpit that the boom clamp is secure.” A Davidon boom clamp is made of CNC milled T6 aluminum and uses stainless steel hardware. It comes in two sizes for 2-2.5” and 3” booms. Davidon operates from a small shop in a small Georgia county. From here, products have been developed that help aerial applicators do a better and more efficient job. Formulating Final UTP-1301-Ad 1

The Davidon Custom Boom System has two areas of reinforcement that gives full thread contact for nozzles and the Davidon boom attach kit for the Hi-Tek atomizer. DRP-955 adjuvant led to the Hi-Tek atomizer, which in turn led to the Tri-Set nozzle. These products opened the doors to build even better ways to put them to work using the Davidon custom boom system with its attach kit, clamps and booms. Because Davidon manufactures all of its products in-house, it can address individual requests from its customers to better target the application. GE Aviation increases production for H80 turboprop engine GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — GE Aviation is increasing the production of its H80 turboprop engines this year to meet customer demands. “The H80 turboprop engine is flying on the Thrush 510G, and Aircraft Industries received its EASA certification in April for the L410 that was re-engined with H80 engines with aircraft being delivered,” said Jim Stoker, president and managing executive of GE Aviation Czech. “To meet the growing demands, we are increasing production to more than 70 engines this year.” GE Aviation Czech is manufacturing the H80 engines at its Letnany facility in Prague. The site employs more than 400 employees. The employees at the GE Aviation Czech facility manage the entire lifecycle of the turboprop engine from design and development to assembly and overhaul. The H80 turboprop engine family incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuelefficient, durable engine with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The engines feature a service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls. The H80 engine family also offers a standard auto start and limiting unit to simplify engine start-up as well as a choice of propeller governors to allow customers flexibility in propeller selection.
shaft horsepower (shp) for takeoff and maximum continuous operation, and the H85 engine is rated at 850 shp. Like the H80 engine, the H75 and H85 engines are aimed at the agricultural, commuter, utility and business turboprop aircraft segments. EASA certified the H75 and H85 engines last year with the FAA type certification anticipated this year. In November, the China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co., Ltd. (CAIGA) selected GE Aviation’s H85 turboprop engine to power its Primus 150 aircraft. CAIGA’s Primus 150 is a five-seat, light single-engine pressurized
turboprop business aircraft with a carbon fiber composite airframe. It is one of the fastest pressurized single-engine turboprop aircraft in its class.
