Mr. Warren; Thank you for bringing the national problem of MET towers endangering ag-pilots to light on the News10 web site. Thanks for the feedback. I was personally outraged when I learned the energy companies actively work to conceal these towers. I’m a pilot myself (inactive recently) and have spent a lot of time in TV news helicopters at low altitude. I think AB 511 is a good start, but it’s ridiculous that there isn’t a national regulation on this. George Warren Reporter, KXTV (ABC) News10 Sacramento, CA

Alaska My name is Doug Glenn I am the president of Glenn Air, Inc in Palmer, Alaska. I have been a Part 137 operator since 1988. I stand by to spray oil dispersant for CISPRI that is a conglomerate owned by Chevron. Tesoro, Unical, Marathon Oil, Shell, etc. I have been a first responder with my Thrush since 1990. It works. I look forward to hearing how it worked out for you in the Gulf of Mexico last year. I was flying about 800 hours per year in the 1990s that has gradually decreased to about 250 the last few years. I do a lot of heavy mine reclamation work, dozers etc. We moved 275,000 yards of top soil on

one job last year then flew on seed and fertilizer. I also aerially stock fish. I have dropped two billion salmon so far, actually a few more than that. I have a weird ag business. I also deliver fuel with the Thrush if I can make a buck doing it, I hate it though. We manufacture oil absorbent boom and straw wattles in Palmer, so that keeps us totally busy. You can look at my web site, just Google Glenn Air Alaska and check it out. Dave Johnston and Gustins in Idaho have supplied my parts for years. My dad has an air taxi in Wasilla and used to have an Otter, a Maule and a Cherokee 6. The got rid of the Otter a few years ago. It was too much work for him, almost 70. I have quite a bit of otter and beaver time and was lucky to have owned a Pilatus porter at one time. I got to fly Bob Hoover around here in it and that was a highlight for me. We had a ball also had a bit much to drink the next night. He can put it away. Have you been here before? I sold a beautiful low time Bull Thrush to S.S Helicopters in David, Panama in 2002. Should have kept that plane I bought it

new from Dick Reed. Actually picked it up at the factory from Fred Ayres. Doug Glenn Glenn Air, Inc Northern Reclamation Services LLC Palmer, AK Hello Doug; A very interesting email, to say the least. Actually, I only reported on the SEAT response for the Gulf oil spill and was not involved in it directly. All in all, it was deemed a success. It proved to oil companies the job could be done safely single engine and single pilot. I’m not privy to all the information and I am sure there are details to be worked out, however, I expect should a spill happen again, the SEATs will be a part of the action. It is truly a whole different kind of flying with all the discipline and procedures. I believe I used to have a photo of your Thrush, taken by my South American representative (long story) who flies for United, often to AK. Mark your calendar, I’ll be knocking on your door come July. Of all the places in the world I have chased down ag-operators, never have I been to Alaska. I look forward to it! -Bill

Texas fire When this aircraft came over, I thought of Sandy and you. I took this photo with my cell phone. The pilot was dropping right next to our shop. Here in Possum Kingdom, Texas, we are experiencing the worst wildfires I have ever seen. On the south end of the lake several multi-million dollar homes are totally gone, even a few new ones. Roads are blocked everywhere and people have been evacuated. It is pretty scary and it’s not over yet. Roger is a volunteer fireman and has been fighting these fires on the ground. He’s exhausted, like all of our firemen. Carol Wallace Possum Kingdom, Texas

Hello Carol; I’m sure everyone is very grateful for the efforts your husband, Roger, and all the other firefighters and volunteers have exerted to minimize this terrible wildfire. I’m glad your family and property escaped damages. The aircraft is Tanker 834, an AT-802 Air Tractor manufactured not far from you in Olney. -Bill

loved the story and would never have guessed an original ex-WWII Stearman would still be spraying or dusting. Do you have an email for Joe? Leland Snow’s passing has also made me thoughtful and sad. Even over here in Africa, he took the time to respond to media email enquiries and some Air Tractor questions a few years ago. It’s amazing how a simple act of consideration could inspire such a high regard for a company and person on the other side of the world. How do I get hold of his autobiography? Best regards John Miller Linden, South Africa Hello John; You are welcome for the AgAir Updates. I looked on the Air Tractor web site to see if you could buy Mr. Leland’s book there, but couldn’t find anything, www. airtractor.com. I suggest you contact Mrs. Ickert at Air Tractor. She can steer you in the right direction. Also, I’ve forwarded your email to Joe. I’m sure he’ll be in touch. Hope this helps,—Bill

story Thank you very much for mailing me copies of your magazine - I enjoy every one of them. I was looking at the January issue story of Joe Woolslayer and if you have no objection, I would like to ask Joe if he has a photo of his Stearman that I could use for a small pic and caption in one of the African magazines. I might also send it to a couple of historic aviation magazine friends I have. I

great life Just finished the April issue. Great tribute to Leland Snow. His many innovations to this industry are a great

accomplishment for a great life. Thank you Leland. Many of us still think his best aircraft was the S2R. How many knew that the R was for “rice model”. The front window was supposed to open so that the pilot could help with the loader, just like with the Stearmans or Ag Cats? I remember when Leland brought his A model to the California convention in Palm Springs. He sold three aircraft to the Imperial Valley operators. Then, he later returned to Douthitt Airstrip in El Centro where four operators were based, my father-in-law being one of them. He was in a B model. I can well remember the distance between the firewall and the back of the 985 P&W. You could hardly get your hand between the firewall and the mags on the Stearman, but I could stand up between the firewall and the engine on the B model. He then went up to Calipatria to demo the plane to Wally Pankratz. Wally felt Leland was on the right track, but wasn’t quite there. Also the 985s were getting expensive and the 1340s were dirt cheap at that time. Wally had bought a bunch of them intending to install them on his N3Ns.I believe Wally invested money with Leland and sent Sam Cook home with him in order to help refine what Wally felt were necessities to Leland’s design and later fazed out his Ns with several C models with the 1340s.He then went through several Ds and into the Rs. I believe Wally also prospered when Leland sold out to Rockwell. Wally remained with the R design and later added the Garrett engine. The Thrush always remained strong in the Imperial Valley. Also in the April issue was a feature on cover crops. I can remember in the late 50s, we flew hairy vetch over cotton in Tennessee before the pickers drug their sacks through the fields. The sacks helped push the vetch into the soil and it provided both pasture and nitrogen for the winter. I spent a lot of hours seeding in my 40 years and remember the frustration of getting a good pattern. The best seeder I ever had was a 1976 AgWagon with a small Swathmaster. With the wing extensions, the Swathmaster had the best reputation for seed and dust in the Valley. I got a lot of new business with that machine. I finally concocted a “feeler gauge”

from strips of scrap galvanized metal as a gate measure so that I could accurately switch from dust, to seed and to granules at different rates. Crop duster innovation, just like many others have had to do. We always held back from the ends (remember a beneficial plant is a weed where it isn’t wanted) and trimmed the ends with the wheels on the deck. Added extra seed for a nice finish on the ends. Thanks for listening to old tales. Tom Mills (XDUSTER) Brawley, CA Hello Tom; Thanks for the compliments. You are a wealth of information. I never knew and probably most pilots don’t, the “R” stood for rice. Seems logical. As for your comment “Thanks for listening to old tales”, I think you should write down these memories and turn them into a series of articles for AgAir Update! You write really good. I can just see the column name — “XDuster Tales”. I bet my graphics people could create a really nice column style graphic with the X, kind of swooping over the “Duster” that has a puff of dust coming from it... Let me know,—Bill

It is going to be a busy one Fire season is in full swing and it appears that it going to be the most active one in years. It started in December across Texas and a good swath of the south central states. Texas began contracting aerial resources in mid-February and by mid- April nearly every available aircraft in the country was in the Lone Star State. They would include the DC-10 very large airtanker, seven Air National Guard Modular Aerial Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS), and the Evergreen 747 very large airtanker. Since the first of the year wildfires have ravaged about one and a half million acres and destroyed almost four hundred homes, businesses, and churches. There is no end in sight as the long term forecast calls for

above average temperatures and below average precipitation. Governor Rick Perry asked residents to pray for rain over Easter Weekend to end the inferno. The Evergreen 747 has been based at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, but it is contracted to fight a huge fire burning in Mexico, about seventy miles south of Eagle Pass, Texas. The Mexican government appealed to the United States and Canada to help battle the blaze which is doing a great deal of damage in an ecological sensitive area in a national park. Along with the 747, the Mexicans have contracted three Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs), and two Type One helicopters. Mexico has appropriated

ContaCt YoUR REPRESEntatIVES... Not easy, you say? You may have found phone and fax numbers easily, or a service that provides more for a fee. But good email addresses can be elusive. Here’s a site that shows all you need about your politicians, including their voting record, with just two or three clicks. Go to http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/index.htm, then insert your zip code - that’s all - and your reps’ names appear. Click on a name and much more shows up, including email address, committees, etc.

$8.3 USDs to support these efforts. All Variable Term Contracts for SEATs have been been canceled for the 2011 fire season. Legal issues over the ranking system the government uses to issue the contracts led to the cancellation. The government has never made public the criteria used to rank the vendors. Many think the system was flawed since its inception and maybe the lawsuits will make it more fair and strait forward. In mid-April, the government canceled the aerial firefighting contract with Aero Union. This is the company that operates the entire fleet of P-3 Heavy Air Tankers. This came at the peak of the Texas spring fire storm. One would think that the government would have allowed

the P-3s to operate during this critical period and straighten out the dispute later. Within about a week, the issues were settled and the aircraft were back in service. It is shaping up to be a very active season across the western states this year, as well. After a three-year slump in activity, it will be welcomed by most aircrews. I hope all have a safe and prosperous season and maybe I will see you in the mountains one day.

SEATs key element in Texas wildfires by Bill Lavender The official start of fire season in the Lone Star State was mid-November, 2010. A drought of historical proportions combined with a heavy fuel load from the previous heavier than normal summer rains set the stage for the worst fire event in state history. By mid February, the first aerial resources were called out in the form of two SEATs dispatched to Sweetwater in the north central part of the state. They were to be followed within a few days by four more SEATs, along with helicopters and heavy airtankers. Late in the month, the first fire storm hit as a strong cold front brought blustery winds which pushed flames over hundreds of thousands of acres and destroyed more than eighty homes. Unfortunately there would be more to follow. During April 2011, Texas was ravaged with unprecedented wildfires, now becoming probably the largest wildfire event in United States history. By the last week of April, in the Possum Kingdom Complex, about 70 miles west of Fort Worth, more than 160 homes and 150,000 acres were lost. Two firefighters on the ground lost their lives fighting the fires. During this same period almost the entire range of the Davis

Mountains was lost to the Rockhouse Fire which scorched over 335,000 acres. Early spring fuel moisture in the single digits, wind speed in the double digits and temperature readings in the triple digits, it was not if, but when these fires would erupt in Texas, a “Perfect Storm”. The Texas Forestry Service (TFS) contracts with private Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) operators to be on standby for wildfires. When the wildfires exploded in the Abilene area, the TFS already had a Portable Airtanker Base (PAB) in position at the Abilene airport supporting eight Air Tractor AT802 SEATs and three “heavy” P2Vs and P3As. By the end of the month, there were 14 AT802s working with the heavies, along with four MAFFS (Modular Aerial Fire Fighting System, a C-130J with a 3,000-gallon tank). MAFFS are not called in until all available resources are being used. It can drop a swath of retardant one-fourth mile wide and 60 feet wide. The SEATs work well in the mix of larger aircraft as they are used to fill in gaps in the retardant lines or reinforce weak areas. Also, Evergreen’s DC-10 has

been utilized carrying more than 11,000 gallons of retardant. The aircraft can be filled in eight minutes and its computerized, gravity-fed dump system can release its entire load in eight seconds. It creates a three-quarters mile long and 300-feet wide swath. The Texas Forestry Service is the controlling agency for the Texas fires. It works with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forestry Services. These interagencies use a Resource Ordering System (ROS) to determine which, where and how many firefighting resources are used. Wildfires are rated based on the level of planning necessary to coordinate between agencies. Planning Level 1 starts with the initial fire call and these levels increase as the fires ramp up to a maximum of Planning Level 5. In April, the Texas wildfires were at Planning Level 4. Once all resources, ground and air, are fully utilized with all available units working with considerations for flight times, retardant and fuel supplies having reached their limits, Planning Level 5 is implemented.

Mike Kidwell, an employee of the BLM, was the PAB’s Air Tanker Base Manager (ATBM). He arrived on the job April 3 from his home base at Reno-Stead airport in Nevada. Originally, planning on a two-week stay, his command was extended to 30 days, being relieved the last week of April. With Kidwell managing the PAB, 546,715 gallons of D-75F fire retardant was dropped in 15 days. The fires still raged. As one fire event would come under control, another outbreak would occur. From early January when the first fire event occurred in 2011, until early May, more than 4.5 million gallons of retardant have been dropped and over 3,000 flight hours logged by the aerial resources. D-75F fire retardant was used to assist in containing the fires, laying fire lines ahead of the ground personnel and drops on targeted areas. The remaining world’s supply of D-75F was on the ramp at Abilene in late April, about 200 bins. Once it is gone, a new and hopefully even better material will replace it. D-75F retardant is delivered in a collapsable container in powder form. An air blast hose is attached to the bottom of

the container, pushing the dry material up into a pipe that mixes the material with water and stores in one of two 2,500-gallon, spill-contained poly storage tanks. The 2,000-pound container of D-75F mixes with 1,800 gallons of water for a 8.91-pound per gallon fire retardant solution. This solution contains NPK fertilizer, salt, coloring agent and an antievaporate dropping agent. The salt is a tried and true fire extinguisher (“throw salt on the fire”), while the NPK helps to restore the land nutrients, coloring agent to see where the retardant lands and the anti-evaporate helps reduce evaporation in very adverse conditions. The mix ratio of D-75F to water is critical, as well as the salt content of the solution. A MicroMotion machine assures the solution is the correct density. A spectrometer checks the salt content. The P3A is loaded 22,721 pounds (2,550 gallons), the P2V with 18,533 pounds (2,080 gallons) and the AT802 with 6,683 pounds (750 gallons) of the D-75F mix. The loading is overseen by two mix managers, while three ramp managers direct the aircraft on and off the loading ramp. SEAT aircraft contracts are flight time managed, both for pilot safety and payment. The flight time starts when the pilot announces on take off, “On the roll” and stops when the pilot pulls up on the ramp and announces, “I’m in the blocks”. The pilot is limited to a 14-hour workday with no more than eight hours of actual flight time during that period. There must be a minimum of 10 hours of uninterrupted rest between workdays and there must be at least one 24-hour period of off time away from the fire base every seven days. Helicopters, which operate from a different base but coordinate with fixed wing aircraft and “heavies” are the primary aerial defense, while SEAT aircraft (all AT802s) fills a unique position with its maneuverability, catching tight spots and filling gaps in fire lines. The SEAT is most effective within a 50-mile radius of the PAB or a satellite base. If the SEAT has to ferry more than 50 miles, between loads the time element allows the fire to get ahead of the retardant’s effect. All flights are coordinated with the lead spotter aircraft, usually a King Air, that makes the fire drop run to be sure it is safe for the air tankers. The pilot relays this information to the air tankers as well as the Incident Commander,

who choreographs ground operations. Sometimes the spotter aircraft has an Air Tactical Group Supervisor on board. Then, the spotter aircraft is designated as a Bravo Ship. After a drop inspection has been made by a Bravo Ship, the pilot can circle above the fire while the Air Tactical Group Supervisor makes decisions about the dynamics of the fire while directing air traffic and relaying information to the ground ops Incident Commander. Unless there is a miracle of wet weather and subsided wind, the Texas wildfires will continue on into the summer. Depending on the weather, the Planning Level could remain at four, increase to five or be reduced. The fuel for the fires is persistent and in combination with dry, windy conditions, the wildfires and the aerial assaults will continue with SEAT aircraft playing a vital role. It wasn’t that long ago, the availability of a SEAT did not exist. Only in recent years has the SEAT proved itself as a viable firefighting tool.

1. Mike Kidwell with D-75F containers. Air is blasted into the retardant container to stir up the powder that exits the top of the container into a hose that is connected to the red venturi-like pipe. Here, water is injected into the powder as it passes through, mixing it into solution as it dumps into the 2,500-gallon holding tank. 2. Mix managers set up the MicroMotion machine. It monitors the density and load amount to the air tankers. 3. Interior office of the PAB with computers tracking air tankers working fires. 4. One of two U.S. Portable Airtanker Bases, working from the command center; all the Air Tanker Base Manager needs is a ramp to store fire retardant, water supply and aircraft fuel. Inside is an office for monitoring fire activity and tracking in real-time by the air tankers using transponder-based Automated Flight Following (AFF). Also, the unit contains an inventory of supplies typically needed at an air tanker base.

PORTLAND, OR—Simplex Manufacturing Co. of Portland Oregon announced that they have acquired the granular spreader product line from Heli- Ap. Simplex will build the full line of spreader at their Portland, Oregon headquarters. The new Simplex GS250 30 cubic ft. spreader weighs in at an industry low 90 lbs while the Simplex GS400 55cubic ft. spreader weighs approximately 135lbs, making both products the lightest spreaders available. Both new Simplex spreaders can be re-started in flight in the case of engine stoppage. The new Simplex spreaders also feature the ability for the top portion of the tank to slide up, increasing tank volume by up to 30%. This allows the operator to carry lighter volume materials without compromising safety by overloading denser materials. Mark Zimmerman, President and CEO of Simplex manufacturing, commented that the new spreader’s design allows for any helicopter with a conventional threeprong cargo hook wiring harness to use our system with all of the functionality and available features, without the need to install additional wiring to the aircraft. He also stated that “The acquisition of this new line of spreaders is just another

indication of Simplex Manufacturing Co’s continued investment in the agricultural spray market”. He also commented that “Simplex has been the leader in the spray business for 65 years and we intend to maintain that leadership position with additional new agricultural products that will be introduced later this year”.

Both new Simplex spreaders can be re-started in flight in the case of spreader engine stoppage. Founded in 1946, Simplex has built a reputation as the leader in design, manufacturing, and certification of mission equipment for helicopters. Simplex maintains its industry leadership by incorporating the latest technology in design and manufacturing systems from high-strength, low-weight composite materials to produce cost-effective systems for agriculture, firefighting, power line cleaning and other aerial applications.

Aerial fire code proposed in New Zealand The National Rural Fire Authority (NRFA) of New Zealand has unanimously agreed that a new code would be developed for aerial firefighting. The code will be auditable as part of the AIRCARE Audit, but is likely to be limited to just proof of pilot competency, equipment status and condition. Initial thoughts on the content of the code are: • Pilot training to the appropriate Unit Standards (or equivalent) for fire behaviour and safety • Pilot competency and a one-off check ride with an E-Category Instructor who is experienced at fire fighting • Personal Protective Equipment • Operational Risk Assessment • CAA certification for operations and maintenance • Equipment requirements including foam operation and pilot controlled variable rate discharge for buckets over 1,000-litre capacity, aircraft fit for purpose • Communications, e.g. radio frequencies • Logistics – what an operator must supply with the helicopter, e.g. fuel for helicopter and pilot • A fatigue management program • Lead pilot responsibilities • Monsoon bucket operations • Compilation of Flight Management Summaries Source: New Zealand Helicopter Association via NZAAA newsletter

Fire burns 11,000 acres in Nebraska A wildfire April 22nd burned 11,000 acres near Thedford, Nebraska threatening at one point to spread to buildings in the community. Thomas County Sheriff Gary Eng said no structures were damaged, no wildlife were killed and the only injuries were two firefighters from Valentine who suffered minor burns. Eighteen sections of land were blackened by the blaze. Sheriff Eng says the fire was started when an all-terrain vehicle being used by a rancher checking his livestock ignited dry grass in a field. Eng said with the fire being whipped

along by 30-to-40 mph winds, losses could have been much worse. At its peak, the fire was nine miles long and a mile wide...coming to within about two miles of federal land managed by the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands. More than 200 firefighters from over 20 departments spent about seven hours battling the blaze, with help from a plane flown by NATA member Garry Wells, Wells Air Service in Scotia, dropping water and foam. Planes help douse grass fire from Aurora News-Register A smoldering burn pit caught fire late Wednesday afternoon along 18 Road near Phillips and burned an estimated quarter section of grass before area firefighters and two airplanes combined efforts to bring it under control. Giltner Fire Chief Perry Hosier reported from the scene that strong winds were apparently a factor in the fire, which broke out on property owned by Gene Gustafson. “It looks like it started in a burn pit area,” Hosier said. “When we got here the winds were up to 15 to 20 miles per hour. It’s something that could have been burning a week or two weeks with that much stuff in a pile. The winds just picked up and with everything so dry we’re very fortunate to have the mutual aid departments and the aerial apparatus.”

“If they get a fire that gets away from them or one they need extra help with, the local fire department contacts NEMA (the Nebraska Emergency Management Association) and then they approve it and either call the fire chief or dispatcher to line it up.” Jensen noted that both of his two aircraft on site at the Aurora Municipal Airport were undergoing annual maintenance, though he was able to get

one ready for service rather quickly. “I had to put some panels on one airplane so it took about 35 minutes from the time they called until the time we were in the air.” Jensen called Rick Boardman at Henderson, who was quickly in the air headed for the Aurora airport. Both planes were filled with water by the Aurora Cooperative, dumped their load on the fire and then returned to be filled

again, this time by area farmer Galyn Hurst, who brought his water-loaded semi to the airport. Doug Krueger piloted the Traudt Aerial plane, while Boardman flew the plane from Henderson. “They were able to get into some areas where the fire department couldn’t get with their trucks and equipment,” Jensen said. “They thought they did some good.” Source: www.auroranewsregister.com

Aerial applicator planes owned by Aurora Cooperative and stationed at Traudt Aerial and Boardman Aerial were called into action Firefighters from Phillips were first on the scene, sometime around 5 p.m., and were soon joined by crews and equipment from Giltner, Marquette, Aurora and Chapman. Hampton firefighters helped at the Aurora Airport. Central City crews were en route to the scene, but were called back. Aerial applicator planes owned by Aurora Cooperative and stationed at Traudt Aerial and Boardman Aerial were called into action, with each being filled up twice and dropping approximately 400-500 gallons per load on the site. “I think that’s what finally put a dent in it,” Hosier said. Fire crews remained on the scene until after 8 p.m. James Jensen with Traudt Aerial noted that ag application aircraft can be a tool in such circumstances through a Nebraska Forestry Service program.

FAA issues Air Tractor SAIB Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) CE-11-30, issued May 9, 2011, informs registered owners/operators of all Air Tractor, Inc. AT-250, AT-300, AT400, AT-500, AT-600 and AT-800 model series aircraft (under Type Certificate Data Sheets A9SW, A17SW, and A19SW) of an airworthiness concern. Specifically, this SAIB provides guidance with special emphasis for general and detailed inspection and repair of corrosion that can be expected in the Air Tractor airframe structure under the severe special use environment these airplanes operate in. At this time, this airworthiness concern has not been determined to be an unsafe condition that would warrant airworthiness directive (AD) action under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 39. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) received reports of severe corrosion affecting various primary structure in Air Tractor, Inc. model airplanes. The range of Air Tractor models shares a similar philosophy in both structural design

Valve

and materials. The highly corrosive environment these airplanes operate in while dispersing chemicals and performing firebomber operations make them susceptible to corrosion in areas and to a degree not normally seen in other general aviation airplanes. In some cases, corrosion of primary structure can be severe enough to degrade the ability of the affected airframe member(s) to carry required certified loads.

identifying, and removing corrosion from airframe structure can be found in FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 43.13-1B, Chapter 6. If corrosion is found in your Air Tractor, Inc. airplane, contact your Air Tractor dealer or the Air Tractor service department for service related support. The FAA recommends you inspect your Air Tractor, Inc. airplane structure at the time intervals and using the inspection procedures directed in Snow Engineering

Leland Snow memorial scholarship established at Texas A&M University Olney, TEXAS – The family of aviation pioneer and Air Tractor founder Leland Snow and the non-profit Texas A&M Foundation have established an endowment fund for the Leland Snow Memorial Scholarship in Aerospace Engineering. The scholarship fund will provide resources to assist Texas A&M Aerospace Engineering students who show exceptional leadership and problem-solving skills, creativity in aircraft design, and academic promise. Leland Snow, Texas A&M Class of ‘52, founder and President of Air Tractor, Inc., died February 20, 2011 at age 80. He built a 53-year legacy of aircraft design and innovations that ushered in the era of the modern agricultural spray plane. Olney Texas-based Air Tractor, the company he founded in 1972, produces the world’s most popular aerial spray aircraft and single engine air tankers for aerial firefighting. Snow was actively involved in engineering and management of the company until his death. In Snow’s book, Putting Dreams to Flight, he described his days as an adventurous young student at Texas A&M making numerous parachute jumps near and on the campus. This was in the late 1940’s when parachutes were intended for emergency use rather than sport. As a senior Aeronautical Engineering student, he began design and construction of his first airplane, the Snow S-1. As a member of the Cadet Corps, he lived in the dorm and would not be allowed to store the steel tubing for the fuselage frame in his quarters without violating the school’s military code, so he hid the tubing in a long

shipping box between two sofas in the visitors’ room. Kristin Edwards, Snow’s oldest daughter and Vice President - Sales at Air Tractor, commented, “The qualities that my father exhibited as a young Aggie – a willingness to take risks and a focused determination to achieve his goals in spite of obstacles – are what helped make Air Tractor the success it is today. Our family wants to continue his legacy by rewarding a student who shows similar characteristics.” Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch remarked that Snow was a prolific aircraft designer whose accomplishments impacted the lives of millions. “Leland Snow was single-handedly responsible for certifying 29 different model airplanes. And then there’s an additional 20 variant models that were certified from his early designs sold to Rockwell-Standard Aero Commander in 1965. His bright yellow airplanes are responsible for increasing the production of food and fiber in the United States and many countries around the world.” Dr. Dimitris Lagoudas, head of the Aerospace Engineering Department at TAMU, remarked, “The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University is very proud of the accomplishments of Leland Snow and would like to see his legacy continue for years to come. His tireless efforts, keen intellect, strong discipline and work ethic resulted in lasting aircraft designs that will provide inspiration to future generations of students. They will know that their potential for growth and success has no limits because Leland has

paved the way for them. The gift by the Snow family to establish the memorial scholarship will allow his name and legacy to continue and we are thankful for that.” Donations to the Leland Snow Memorial Scholarship in Aerospace Engineering can be sent to:

Jackson says EPA will not change corn ethanol policy EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, fresh off her Iowa farm tour, told a Washington, DC audience this week the agency will not change its corn ethanol policy to ease corn supplies. Speaking to a U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA) forum, Jackson said, “Yes, corn prices are quite high, but everything we know and every USDA knows, it does not lay a very large percentage of that – much less than 5% of any increase – on the back of some of the corn being used as feedstock for

ethanol.” EPA’s role is administering the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the federal mandate on how much ethanol gasoline and diesel refiners must blend with their fuels under federal law. Currently the RFS requires about 12.5 billion gallons in 2011, but in January, EPA waived the percentage blend rate, effectively bumping to 15% from the current 10% rate. Nebraska initiates sensitive crop locater by Craig Romary Nebraska Dept. of Ag. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) would like to remind all Nebraska applicators to check out the Nebraska Pesticide Sensitive Crop Locater at www. agr.ne.gov. This is an on‑line, searchable database and map viewer intended to assist pesticide applicators in knowing where sensitive crops are located with respect to their application site. This has been promoted to grower groups and a number of new locations have been added in the last few months. The database currently contains 266 separate crop locations for approximately 174 growers located in 58 of Nebraska’s 93 counties. The database is predominately made up of vineyard and organic crop locations, but also contains locations for apiaries, fruit

and vegetables, orchards, and nurseries. The NDA has been double checking crop locations, so it has the best information available. Applicators can search by legal description, by county, or by a specific crop. They can also enter the date when last checked to see a list of records that have been added since that time. Users can also use the map viewer to visually see locations in relation to common features, such as roads, towns, and legal description boundaries. Applicators are advised to take the time to use this service and take the appropriate steps to reduce drift and potential sensitive crop damage. Also encourage commercial growers to provide their information to this web site. Source: NATA newsletter

TAAA hosts Op S.A.F.E. The TAAA District 3 hosted a spray clinic and dinner March 24 and 25, 2011 in Levelland, TX, bringing together months of planning and preparation. The clinic was the first TAAA sponsored pattern testing in a number of years and was hosted by Dan Kubal of Kubal Aerial Spraying. Dr. Dennis Gardisser conducted the Operation S.A.F.E. event, while other volunteers gave tours to local school children and teachers. A total of 12 aircraft attended the clinic. TAAA was able to complete the third and final PAASS program presentation, as well. Other milestones for this event were the debut of NAAREF’s Emergency Responder video. Over 20 local first responders attended the clinic and the video premier and were very appreciative for the specialized training. A big note of “thanks” goes

money talk

Samuel L. Miller, smiller@SLMmodels.com

Do your fees produce a profit? There are many ways to charge for aviation services. The type operation usually determines the conventional method of billing. Regardless of the billing method used, the end result must produce revenues greater than expenses in order to stay in business. Identifying

revenues is easy, but what about the expenses? Expenses are usually divided into fixed and variable categories. Fixed expenses are defined as the expenses of owning the aircraft. Variable expenses are defined as expenses resulting from the operation of the aircraft. Variable

expenses are created when the aircraft flies. What are the variable expenses of your aircraft in dollars per hour? Accurately evaluating your billing system requires determining what billing system produces a profit. There is only one time that you will really know whether an asset was a profitable investment. That time is the time you sell the asset and deposit the proceeds from the sale. Simply stated, you open a bank account when you purchase an asset. All funds received are deposited and all expenses paid are deducted from this account. When the asset after-tax sale proceeds are finally deposited in the account, you can calculate the Return On Investment (ROI) achieved. Calculating your ROI requires evaluating cash flow considering the time value of money from the time you purchase the aircraft through the time you sell the aircraft. Calculation of ROI requires using a computer financial model and this was

discussed in a previous article. Evaluate your billing system today the old fashion way; use paper and pencil to perform the steps below. Your bank account should provide an excellent record of revenues and expenses. Review your expenses over the last several years for each aircraft you operate. Review each extraordinary variable expense separately and prorate the total expense so that it makes sense to project an annual fixed or variable hourly expense amount as appropriate. Determine a total annual fixed expense and variable hourly expense for projection purposes. Review your revenue over the same time period. Determine the average revenue per hour for the total number of hours flown during the time period reviewed. The number of hours flown should include flying hours due to maintenance trips, test flights, training, positioning, etc. The hours flown when no revenue was collected should be

divide the revenue received by the hours flown. If the revenue per hour collected is not greater than your average cost per hour then you need to evaluate the billing system for your services. By immediately costing out each job, you will quickly determine a profitable billing system. IMPORTANT: Don’t let the recent rise in fuel costs turn your business into a loser. Implement a fuel surcharge to preserve your profit. AircraftCostAnalysis can be used to determine the after-tax ROI that was mentioned earlier. See www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com for the details.

Add the total annual fixed and variable expenses (for the annual hourly utilization) to determine the total annual expenses. Divide the total annual expenses by the annual hours flown to calculate your average cost per hour. Compare your average revenue per hour to your average cost per hour. Hopefully, the average hourly revenue is greater than the average hourly cost. Now you have a quick picture of the net on an hourly basis. To improve your profit, you should cost out each job. hands-on flying

Gremlins in the cockpit Every flying machine can, at one time or another, get a case of the gremlins. They sneak into the aircraft from who knows where (I suspect that little opening just above the tail wheel spring). They wreak

havoc with all the electrical gizmos that we take for granted. Buttons, switches and knobs; it’s amazing how we depend on these little gadgets to get our work done. Pump brake, swath advance,

lights, GPS, everything has a switch of some sort. They are the locks and channels of the dozens of tiny streams of electricity that constantly flow throughout the aircraft. We hardly notice them until

they quit working. Then we curse the little contraptions for giving up after only about a million uses. As ag pilots we fly our machines and operate its systems by muscle memory and instinct. We rarely give a second thought to what our fingers and thumbs are doing. They know their jobs and are usually pretty darn dependable. There is choreography and rhythm to movement and as long as everything is going along normally, it’s perfectly timed and graceful. Throw in a sudden change of routine and they stumble all over each other. Instead of having Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire at your finger tips, you wind up with a handful of Keystone Cops. Gremlins showed up in the Thrush I was flying one night. Stealthy at first, they camouflaged themselves as a bad grounding wire contact in a work light. Next, my swath advance button stopped working. I resorted to using the keypad. I had to use my right hand to push the buttons, swapping hands from the spray handle to the stick, manipulating the keypad and swapping back. I know this doesn’t sound like much of an effort, but it doesn’t take long for that little bit of out of the ordinary movement to become quite laborious. Then, my light switch started acting up. The gremlins must have been having a good time watching me try every way possible to press a single switch. I finally gave up, got the lights to stay on continuously and spent the remainder of the night flying around like a giant turbine-powered flashlight. Worse than a complete failure of a system is when the gremlins make the system intermittent. This is an old gremlin trick designed to drive a pilot crazy. He’ll find himself pressing a button or flipping a switch until his fingers bleed. I tried to troubleshoot the electrical problems between loads and got zapped a couple of times for my efforts. If there is ever any doubt about the presence of electricity, just place two fingers on the contacts while your hand rests against the instrument panel. Trust me, it works.

The bonus is the whack to the funny the auxiliary switches in mind and give bone when you jerk your hand away and them a test now and then. with Newton Aviation, in a business arrangement, after selling his beloved Weatherly to Don. He enjoyed aviation, snowmobiling, NASCAR, mountain brookie trout fishing, hunting, music, reading and rodeo. He also enjoyed college football where he rooted for the MSU Bobcats. He enjoyed many trips to the Reno Air Races and Oshkosh Fly-In. Mike was a people person and loved to visit. His gentle spirit, quick wit and sense of humor was contagious. He will be greatly missed. He was a man of faith. He valued integrity, honesty, hard work and education. A meticulous planner, his attention to detail and his intelligence made him a standout. He was really a dog person, but when he married Connie, he became a cat person too. He was a true pet lover. He was a very generous man and loved his family and many friends. He was an active member with the Association of Montana Aerial Applicators and a former NAAA board member. He was a member of the Little Belt Snowmobile Club, NRA and AOPA. Mike was bitten by the flying bug during his first flight over his childhood ranch north of Hilger in a Luscombe

Silvaire piloted by his uncle Ed Biggerstaff. Building and flying model airplanes kept his fire going until he could start flying for real when he was a student at Montana State University with the Flying Bobcats. He quickly moved up the ladder after soloing in only four hours of total flight time. A TV show about crazy crop dusters? Thanks, but no thanks. NAAA has been contacted by someone interested in producing a reality show about crop dusting that he would star in. The pitch: Crop dusting is the third most dangerous occupation behind logging and deep sea fishing, two occupations that already have Reality TV programs, so why not crop dusting? After warming us up with that overture, the inquisitor explained he is a former single engine flight instructor and commercial-rated glider pilot, and he has always wanted to try ag flying. What he hopes to develop is a show that documents him “going up the ag pilot learning curve” and showcases pilots already engaged in aerial application. NAAA advises members to be extremely

guarded if approached about this socalled golden opportunity, or any other Reality TV “opportunities.” The truth is most of the stuff billed as Reality TV is no more real than professional wrestling. Sure, the shows involve real people performing real acts, but like in professional wrestling, the outcomes aren’t determined by the participants, they are orchestrated by script writers and editors. (Yes, even Reality TV has “scripts,” along with scads of product placement.) At this point, it appears this is more of an idea for a reality show than an actual reality show. The former flight instructor, who does not appear to have any TV production experience, told NAAA he is in the early stages of looking for a

Concorde Battery Corporation has released a new Parasitic Load Tester (PLT) to measure the parasitic load / drain on aircraft batteries when the master switch is off and the aircraft is inactive. The tester is designed to mate with a MS3509 style quick disconnect receptacle. This innovative PLT was conceived and engineered in response to concerns in the aviation community about the effect of parasitic loads / drains on battery capacity, state of charge, airworthiness and battery life. A parasitic load is a small, continuous flow of DC current that takes power from the battery when the master switch is off. Parasitic loads are present in most modern aircraft to some degree. Examples of parasitic loads are relays, clocks, radios and on board computers. Depending on the magnitude of the parasitic load, the battery in an inactive aircraft may be depleted within weeks or even days. A battery discharged in this manner can cause an AOG event. Another inherent

danger is that a battery without enough emergency power reserve can often still start the engine(s), leaving you vulnerable in the case of a generator failure. The FAA requires aircraft batteries to be certified with a minimum of 80% capacity for emergency power reserve in the event of an electrical generating system failure. Repetitive deep discharges from parasitic drain will shorten the battery life and batteries deeply discharged in this manner may not be recoverable. If authorized by the aircraft manufacturer, disconnecting the battery from the battery plug when the aircraft is stored will eliminate the parasitic load. Measuring parasitic load is easy to

do by connecting the PLT between the battery receptacle and the aircraft mating plug. The PLT is a molded polypropylene body equipped with separate test leads for connection to a digital multimeter (DMM). Concorde PLT part number 4102, is rated for loads up to 10 amperes and is equipped with a 10 amp fuse. Instructions on how to measure parasitic load and calculate time to battery depletion are provided in Instruction Manual, Aircraft Battery Parasitic Load Tester, Document No. 5-0409. The manual is packaged with the PLT and is also available online at www. concordebattery.com.

Aircraft registration renewal Approximately six months before an aircraft’s registration expires, the Registry will mail a notice with instructions to the owner using the mailing address of record. The notice will identify the expiration date, and the three month window during which application must be made to ensure receipt of the new certificate before the old certificate expires. A code provided in the notice allows on-line re-registration and payment of $5 fee when there are no changes in ownership, address, or citizenship to report. If there are changes to report, the form can be completed on-line, printed signed and mailed with the $5 fee. Check your current aircraft registration card for the mailing address of record. If your address is not current, you will not receive the re-registration form. Failure to re-register will result in the cancellation of the N- number assigned to that aircraft within 90 days after the expiration of an aircraft’s registration.

Eternal blessings from God “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). The Bible constantly affirms that God is the Father of Jesus Christ and that He

was sent into this world by His father to do His Father’s work. In one of the prophecies of the Old Testament that speaks of the coming of the Messiah,

Isaiah wrote, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). John wrote, “I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God” (John 1:34). Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:16-17). Hebrews tells us that in these last days God has spoken to us through His Son, and the Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of God (Hebrews 1:1-14). Paul is not thanking God for material blessings; he is thanking God for spiritual blessings in heavenly places. Spiritual blessings are far more important than physical blessings. God blesses us with earthly blessings, but they are temporary; spiritual blessing are heavenly and for all eternity. There is an evil heresy that has spread through the church in these last days. This heresy says that Christians can live in luxury, drive fancy cars, wear expensive jewelry, and live in the finest homes. False teachers say that having

wealth and living in luxury is a sign of our spiritual depth and strong faith. These false teachers say we can speak our own realities into existence if we have faith like they do. But true biblical faith is having faith in God’s promises, not our wishful thinking. Jesus warned us of this type of worldly thinking when He spoke of a rich man who had such good crops that he had to build bigger barns to hold them. With this great wealth he could take it easy, eat, drink and be merry. But God said, “Fool, this night you are going to die, and then who is going to own all your wealth” (Luke 12:13-20)? Then Jesus said, “So is the person who lays up treasures for himself and is not right toward God” (Luke 12:21). Paul wrote, “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:9-10). If God blesses us with worldly wealth we are not to be prideful about it and not to trust in these uncertain worldly riches, but trust

in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. We are to be rich in good works and willing to share our wealth with those who have a need (1 Timothy 6:17-18). Christians do not have a guarantee against poverty, but God does promise that our needs will be met. For humans, there is usually a vast difference between our needs and our wants. And happy is the person who walks so close with the Lord that their needs and wants are the same thing. They have set their minds on heavenly things and want very little of what this world has to offer (Philippians 3:20, 4:6-13, Colossians 3:1-4). It is not a sin to be wealthy, but there are several warnings in the Bible to the rich about how they use their wealth and how they treat the poor. Solomon wrote, “He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty” (Proverbs 22:16). James tells us that the cries of the poor have reached the ears of the Lord, and He will punish the rich that have failed to pay their employees a fair wage (James 5:1-6). Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). “In Jesus Christ we have redemption

through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7). The forgiveness of sins is the greatest need for humanity; without the forgiveness of our sins we cannot have the righteousness of God and we cannot enter into God’s heaven. Without the forgiveness of sins we are eternally separated from God and under God’s wrath (John 3:36). God has declared that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). The sins we commit don’t make us sinners; we sin because we are natural born sinners—we act like what we are.

KUGLER KQ-XRN

Because we inherited our sin nature from Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12-14), God will allow us to have our sins forgiven if we will accept God’s conditions of believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. If we don’t accept the conditions of God’s offer of forgiveness for our sins, then we will suffer the consequences of our sins, which is eternal damnation in the lake of fire with Satan and his demons (Revelation 20:14-15). A righteous God must punish sin. The greatest miracle in all the universe was when, “God made Jesus Christ to be sin for us (John 1:29), who knew no sin (Hebrews 4:15); that we might be made the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21). We can have eternal life in God’s heaven only because Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sins and satisfied God’s demand for justice. Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Are your sins forgiven? It’s your choice where you will spend eternity!

It’s just plane smart. “You can’t find a slow release nitrogen product that’s easier to handle and easier on the equipment. We piggyback aerial applications of KQ-XRN with fungicides with good results. No other products fit our system as well as Kugler products.”

in my opinion

Upcoming Corn Run for 2011 We are fast approaching the time of year for the mass ag-pilot migration to the Midwest for the 2011 Corn Run. A lot of southern pilots have already headed north. I was talking recently with one of our instructors, who will be traveling to Nebraska, about some of the differences he and other southern pilots will face compared to local flying. Of course, the first thing that comes up is the ferry distance. This increase in distance does not present too much of a problem - the charges per acre are 2.5 to 3 times more than 2 and 3-gallon work at home; so the dollars per hour at the end of the day are usually about the same. Another thing to consider is the likelihood that they will be flying to a field they have never been to before. It

should go without saying to look the field over thoroughly before entering the first spray run.

In some areas multiple ag-planes are working in a very close proximity. Check for hidden wires, neighboring crops, gardens, kids playing in the back yard, houses with a swimming pool or clothes drying on a clothesline and remember: it is not you who determines what is and is not a “congested area”. (Found in FAR 137.51 and 137.53.) Pay

particular attention to FAR 137.51 (b) (4) (i). With this in mind, you may fly 35 miles to a field, and discover in order to spray the field a turn over houses is required. What’s the proper course of action? There will be some areas of the country where multiple ag-planes are working in a very close proximity. Remember to be vigilant in your use of the radio and your scan for other traffic. Announce your position and your intentions. Be courteous - to everyone, the other pilots, the other operators and even the local community. Be a good representative of your home. As per always, be safe, have fun and make money!

From the first to the last Ag Cat by Bill Lavender Along interstate I-10 in southern Louisiana sits the oldest ag-operation in the state, Lyon Flying Service. Started in 1954, the company has always been owned by one man, Emery Lyon. Lyon Flying Service was one of the first Ag Cat operators and distributors in the country, buying its first Ag Cat in 1959. Not only does Lyon Flying Service still operate Ag Cats in the rice country of Louisiana (two turbine-powered, 550-gallon modified hopper D-models), it continues to stock over $20,000 in Ag Cat parts, even though the aircraft is no longer manufactured. In the early 1950s while Emery Lyon’s brother was away at college, Emery decided that he could fly his brother’s Vagabond. Without permission, training or an incident, Emery successfully circumvented the 45-minute bus ride

to school and commuted via aircraft. He continued flying, unlicensed, to airshows and events as far away as Houston, Texas. It was on one of these cross country trips the FAA finally caught up with him. To satisfy the FAA, and to the dismay of Emery’s brother, Emery’s parents sold the Vagabond. Letting a little time pass after the run-in with the FAA, Emery decided to purchase an Aeronica Chief and use the aircraft to formally attended flight school on the Welsh airport. After Emery graduated with a Private Pilot’s License, there was a fatal accident at the flight school that closed its doors, ending Emery’s “formal” flight training. Later, Wilson Dorion formed Welsh Flying Service using Stearmans. Knowing Emery was a pilot, Dorion asked Emery to fly for him. Emery declined, citing his lack of Stearman time. Undeterred, Dorion insisted Emery

fly the 220 HP Stearman back and forth to high school to build time. Emery gladly complied, logging many hours and paving the way to his ag-flying career. Emery started his ag-flying career during his senior year in high school.

While his friends were off at the beach vacationing, Emery was making money crop dusting. During his first year in college, he bought Welsh Flying Service from Dorion and changed the name to Lyon Flying Service. At 19, Emery was

operating five Stearmans - as a private pilot. Emery also demonstrated Cessna aircraft for a Cessna dealer who was also an FAA designated pilot examiner. After one of Emery’s flight demonstrations, he inquired to the dealer if he could get his Commercial license. Unknown to Emery, the examiner had thought he was a Commercial Pilot all along! With one flail swoop of the pen, the examiner quickly handed Emery his Commercial ticket. By 1959, Lyon Flying Service was operating six 450 HP Stearmans. Four

were set up for dry work and two for wet work. While Emery was operating the six Stearmans, Louisiana Flyers had ordered a new 2B Thrush. Bill Rose of Louisiana Flyers told Emery he should also order one. Emery had just survived a crash in one of his Stearmans that tore off the bottom left wing after hitting a tree. Loaded, afraid to touch the controls, Emery and the aircraft circled their way forward until finally spotting a field where he believed he could land. During the landing, the top section of the aircraft’s wing separated. That’s when Emery

Lyon decided he would never own a mono-wing aircraft; ending any further discussion about buying a Thrush. After the Stearman crash, Emery sent a letter to Grumman Aircraft inquiring about buying an Ag Cat, even though at the time the aircraft had a poor spray system and no dry system. That year, Lyon Flying Service bought its first Ag Cat, Serial Number 5. In 1961, executives from Grumman visited Emery in Welsh. This visit started the process that eventually replaced the six Stearmans with four Ag Cats

and established Lyon Flying Service as a dealer for the next thirty-plus years. While in Welsh, the Grumman executives hired Emery’s shop foreman “Sparky” Heisten, who eventually engineered and patented a vane spreader and a sliding, cam hopper gate door for the Ag Cat. He eventually retired from Grumman. Since that first Ag Cat purchase, Lyon Flying Service has sold over 900 Ag Cats. The company has bought over 50 Ag Cats for its use; flying, then replacing them in three or four seasons with new ones. As an Ag Cat dealer, Emery worked with Grumman to develop the Ag Cat spray and dry systems, as well as 46 and 64-gallon fuel tanks. He recommended to Grumman that they not offer the 46-gallon fuel tank, but Grumman did anyway. Between Lyon Flying Service and Dick Reade’s Mid-Continent Aircraft Sales and Service in Hayti, Missouri, 80% of all Ag Cats built were sold by them. Lyon Flying Service sold its last new Ag Cat in 1992. During its 55 plus-year history, Lyon Flying Service was a Cessna and Dromader dealer. In the early 1980s while a Dromader dealer, the company helped Melex certify 35 Dromaders.

Lyon Flying Service has certified 35 new A and B-model Ag Cats with turbine conversions. The company would use a radial “ferry” engine to bring the aircraft from the Ag Cat factory in Elmyra, New York to Welsh where they were converted to turbine power. Lyon Flying Service bought the first turbine “D” model, 550-gallon Ag Cat in 1981. The engine was a PT6A-15AG. The company still owns the aircraft and has operated it every season since. Now, the aircraft has a PT6A-34AG engine. In the aircraft’s 30-year history, it has survived

four catastrophic engine failures with no major damage to the airframe. Its wings have been modified to all metal, with new metal belly skins and panels, including a modified, double-hinged hopper door for ease of loading dry materials. The bottom of the fuel tank has .030” to .090” armor plate to protect against damage from a fertilizer loader’s auger. The two D-model Ag Cats work mostly rice, soybeans and about 2,000 acres of sugar cane. All the rice is planted by air using 120 pounds of seed per acre. This is done during April, May and June, along with applying dry fertilizer. Now, there is a hybrid rice seed that has cut aerial planting by 25%, but has increased fertilizing applications from one to two, plus two mandated herbicide applications. Soybeans are also planted by air using

30 pounds of seed per acre. During soybean planting, timing is critical, with a watchful eye on the weather. If there is rainfall before the aerially planted soybean is two inches tall, it will rot and require replanting. Lyon Flying Service used to treat 15,000 acres of sugar cane. The applications came at a time that fit well with the rice work. However, sugar cane acreage has reduced to about 2,000 acres, being replaced by soybeans and rice. Emery Lyon and Lyon Flying Service have served southern Louisiana farmers and Ag Cat operators from around the world for over 50 years. Emery experienced the beginning of what once was the greatest and most popular ag aircraft built, the biplane Ag Cat. Emery, Lyon Flying Service and Ag Cat’s history is inseparable.

note of interest: This 30-year old D-model turbine Ag Cat getting its annual in the Lyon Flying Service shop.

Every Ag Cat series of serial numbers ending in 13, e.g. 113, 213, 313, 413, has not survived. Unlucky 13. Actually, serial number 13 was skipped and the aircraft was given the serial number 12A, but it didn’t help, it still crashed. This phenomenon also has happened with the B-series of Ag Cats ending in 13.

NTSB Identification: *ERA11LA216* Date: March 25, 2011 Location: Culpepper, VA Aircraft: HILLER UH-12E Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On March 25, 2011 a Hiller UH-12E helicopter was substantially damaged during a forced landing into an open field, following an uncommanded high engine rpm and a loss of lift, while surveying an area for spraying near Culpepper, Virginia. The pilot reported that he was flying approximately 150 to 200 feet above ground level when he noted an uncommanded high engine rpm; the helicopter turned approximately 60 degrees in heading, and experienced a loss of lift. He reduced the collective and initiated an auto rotation. After

the helicopter came to rest, the pilot exited the helicopter, and reported that the transmission was “hot” and the transmission cooler was “the same temperature as the outside air temperature.” According to photographs provided by a FAA inspector that responded to the accident location, the helicopter was resting on the hopper that was utilized to carry the applicant and it was leaning about 45 degrees to the left. The tailboom was severed and the main rotor blades were damaged.

NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA181* Date: April 01, 2011 Location: Palouse, WA Aircraft: CESSNA 188, Injuries: 1 Serious. On April 1, 2011, about 1240 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna A188B collided with terrain during an aerial application flight near Palouse, Washington. The commercial pilot sustained serious injuries; the airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage from impact forces. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The operator reported that the pilot was on his third pass on the field, which was bordered by a butte. During the turn out, the airplane collided with the terrain.

AAU’s Argentina excursion 2011 AgAir Update’s Argentina Excursion - Part 2 by Bill Lavender In the May edition of AgAir Update, on Day 1, Walt and I arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina from the United States and drove north to overnight in Rosario. On Day 2, we drove further north where we visited SpeedAgro and Tiger SRL in Sauce Viejo, in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina north of Buenos Aires about 450 km (300 miles). After a full day, we returned to Rosario for the evening. Day 3—In Rosario for day 3, Walt and I visited Arrowws, which was founded in 1998 by Lisandro Falzone, the company’s president. Arrowws manufactures AgroSpray adjuvant products for agricultural aviation. All AgroSpray products are 100% manufactured in Argentina. AgroSpray’s Harrier is an oil-based anti-evaporate. It replaces higher concentrations of emulsifiable crop oil and is more compatible. One liter of

Harrier is the equivalent of twenty liters of crop oil. Used primarily with herbicide applications, Harrier contains silicone agents that help break surface tension when the spray droplet contacts the plant and improves penetration. Harrier Strike is designed for use with insecticides and Harrier Sentry for fungicides, each formulated to give the best possible results with each type of chemical.

AgroSpray’s Maxi-Drop is an adjuvant that is combined with Harrier in tank mixes. Its mission is to minimize drift from the target site and work as a sticking agent. The mix rate is 10-20 ml per 100 liters of water. A typical 1500-liter tank mix would require 1.5 - 2 liters of Maxi-Drop. AgroSpray continually monitors the mixing and application procedures of

the new customer, showcasing their concern for the customer’s success when using AgroSpray products. This insures the applicator selects the right product and mixes it correctly. One way this is accomplished is using AgroSpray’s Full Control to check the pH of the mix water. By adding a measured amount of Full Control, the pH of the water can be determined by its color. Once that is done, the pH can be corrected with the prescribed amount of Full Control to neutralize the water, making the chemicals in the mix more effective. AgroSpray’s products are tested with aircraft spraying dye-sensitive cards placed in a line perpendicular to the aircraft’s flight path. The check cards are scanned and evaluated using “Stainmaster” computer software. Arrowws employees 16 people. It is building a new facility in Rosario in order to handle the increased demand for its AgroSpray products. AgroSpray products are certified and sold in Argentina, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Uruguay. work better. The grower provides the chemicals and the crop oil. If the relative humidity rises above 60%, Mauricio always calls the grower to see if he should continue with his application. Serving as president for the Santa Fe aerial applicators association, Mauricio explains that negative media is one of the largest problems his members face. Like most aerial applicators in all parts of the world, the media usually works against the yellow airplane and its pilot, often with misinformation. Eating late in the day for lunch and

late at night for dinner is the norm in Argentina. It was mid-afternoon before beginning our lunch under the trees beside the hangar. As it often is, a glass of Argentina red wine (vino fino tinto) spurs the conversation, comparing ag-aviation in each country. With the day coming to a close, Walt and I bade farewell to the Fargioni’s and returned to our hotel in Rosario. Tomorrow would be Day 4 (of six days) when we would visit an operator near Las Parejas and from there to see an old friend, Guillermo Giordana, in Venado Tuerto for the night.

Mauricio Fargioni and Walt Jazun discuss ways to prepare a parrallada, while Andrés Fargioni looks on.

Walt and I excused ourselves and departed AgroSpray to visit with Fargioni Servicios Aereas in Pujato, about a 45-minute drive. Mauricio Fargioni and family had prepared us a very delicious parrillada (BBQ) lunch at their hangar. Mauricio Fargioni started spraying in a C-188 AgTruck in 1978. In 1997, he made the transition to an AT502 with a PT6A-15AG engine - buying it used from Ag Sur, the Argentine Air Tractor dealer. By 2006, he had added a new AT402 with a PT6A-11AG engine. Last year,

Mauricio’s son, Andrés, started flying ag in a C-188 AgTruck. The primary crop in this mid-eastern Argentine farmland is soybeans. Most of the applications are for control of insects and, now, for a new disease in the region called cercospora (frog eye). Using five rotary atomizers on each side of the aircraft, fungicide applications are typically 50 l/ha (five GPA), while insecticide applications are 15 l/ha (1.5 GPA) that includes one liter of crop oil and an adjuvant to make the crop oil

New Thrush spar cap STC by Bill Lavender There is an estimated 800 Thrush aircraft in the U.S. and another estimated 600 worldwide that will require the replacement of the lower spar cap to remain airworthy. Depending on the AD identified group the aircraft is in, the lower spar cap and splice block will have to be replaced somewhere between 5,400 and 6,200 hours of total time on the wings. This excludes recent and current production Thrush aircraft with its 29,000-hour wing. Previously, the choices available to meet the FAA’s AD have been a replacement of the lower spar cap with a new production unit, or installing the STC’d Avenger kit. In July 2011, the Century Wing Spar Mod, STC’d by Gulf Coast Ag Aircraft Sales and Service of Wharton, Texas will be available. The Century Wing Spar Mod is a lifetime wing lower spar cap fix that comes with a new lower spar cap and splice block assembly, hardware and tool list. Eugene Shanks, Sr. began developing

the “Century” in 2009. Originally, the design would have allowed the kit to be installed without removing the wing. However, the FAA would not approve the procedure and Shanks had to develop a replacement kit that is now the Century. The STC was issued April 8, 2011 and includes all S2R and S2D model Thrushes up to the factory’s 29,000-hour wing. Gulf Coast is currently establishing a network of dealers throughout the U.S., who can provide the kit and/or install it. The kit is shipped in a 20-foot container via truck. The lower spar cap is made from heat treated, aircraft grade, 4340 American steel. The steel is ultrasound checked before the spar cap is machined from the stock. The estimated installation time is 300 shop hours. This includes drilling off the fuel tank bottom of each wing and the leading edge skin from the rear spar line to the nose of the rib. The remaining top half of the wing remains intact. The bottom wing skins are drilled

enough to get to the backside of the spar. If the aircraft has the older, smaller butterfly plate, it is replaced with a larger butterfly plate. The installer has a choice of using AN, Huck, or Hi-Lok bolts. The FAA issued a 60,000-hour limit due

to the increased size and high strength steel use and from the results of strength analysis tests. The mod is considered a lifetime STC’d repair. The kit cost $50,000 including installation, about $1.20 an hour.

Gulf Coast Ag Aircraft Sales and Service’s Century Wing Spar Mod is engineered for a 10,500 pound gross weight with a 60,000-hour life. Due to the larger spice blocks and strength of the spar cap, the unit weighs 40 pounds more than a stock lower spar cap. The 232-inch spar cap will work with both extended and stock wing Thrush aircraft.

Adjuvants affect droplet size and anti-evaporants substitute for crop oil The following is a presentation made by Alan McCracken (MACBRI) at the 2010 ASABE/NAAA Technical Session, sponsored by ASABE Technical Committee PM-23/6/2, at the 44th NAAA Convention & Exposition in Savannah, GA December 6, 2010. Written and submitted to AgAir Update by Alan McCracken and Victor Escalas (SpeedAgro). A series of field tests were conducted in Argentina to report on the use of adjuvants for improvement in the deposition of spray droplets and their effect in reducing losses due to evaporation. During the tests it was observed that the applied products behaved differently when applied through rotary atomizers than when applied using hydraulic nozzles. The outcome of the tests proved that adjuvants have a positive effect on the number of droplets collected when using water sensitive collection cards. The tests were conducted during

temperature ranges of 28-34°C (5870°F) and a relative humidity range of 22-45% with wind speeds ranging 5-11 MPH with an average of speed of 8.8 MPH at 90 degrees to the line of flight. Six different aircraft with different “found” spray systems (without making modifications) were used; Ayres Turbo Thrush, Thrush 600, Air Tractors AT401 and AT401, Cessna 188 and Kruk-106. Four types of rotary atomizers were represented; Micronair, Techmoliq, Aleman and JIB. The last three are manufactured in Argentina and Micronair in England. Also included in the spray equipment were ceramic hollow cone and CP09 nozzles. The spray volumes ranged from 0.3 - 1.2 GPA with a red dye added to enhance the visual effect of the droplets. The objective of the tests was to compare the efficiency of droplet collection with water sensitive cards [25 cm x 75 cm] placed at different

angles relative to the wind direction at a height of 20 cm. A total of four consecutive swaths were made upwind with an analysis made of the first swath. The Ayres Turbo Thrush with Tecmoliq rotary atomizers made the application for Graph 1. This graph evaluates the relative droplet collection efficiency of cards placed at different angles using a silicon additive (SpeedAgro’s SpeedWet Siliconado NG). Average number of droplets/cm² collected with five lts/ha.

Graph 1 indicates cards inclined at 45 degrees facing the wind collected more droplets than cards placed horizontally. In addition, more droplets were collected on

June 2011

25

the vertical cards, most likely due to the effect of the product in reducing the surface tension and consequently smaller droplets. Both the visual observation and the droplet analysis confirmed the following result; Horizontal cards were best for the collection of large drops, however had a low efficiency in the collection of small droplets. The other extreme was with vertical cards that collected very few or no large droplets. This trial demonstrated clearly that for collection of a complete droplet spectrum the cards must be placed at a 45 degree angle facing the wind direction. With the Kruk-106 using hollow cone

nozzles set at 90 degrees relative to the wind and applying 12 l/ha (1.1 GPA) and the AT402 using CP09 nozzles with an application rate of 8 l/ha (0.75 GPA), the addition of SpeedWet reduced the values for Dvo.1, Dvo.5 and Dvo.9 as well as the %CV confirming the effect of producing a more uniform droplet size (see Tables 3 and 4). It is also apparent the Nimbus-brand oil had a dramatic effect in reducing the droplet size, probably due to the effect on the surface tension. With an AT502 using Micronair AU3000 rotary atomizers at an application rate of 3 l/ha, the addition of SpeedWet resulted in larger droplet sizes

being collected on the cards. This test was conducted in low relative humidity, so it is probable the effect of SpeedWet was to maintain droplet size, while water droplets lost size due to evaporation.

With the Air Tractor-402 using CP09 flood nozzles at an application rate of 8 l/ha, the test cards were placed horizontally, 45 degrees and vertically at five positions across the swath with a crosswind. Note the very dramatic difference in the number of droplets collected between the horizontal cards and those at 45 degrees and vertically, with as many as six times more droplets being collected on the inclined and vertical cards when compared to the horizontal.

With the Air Tractor AT401 using 76 hollow cone nozzles at an application rate of 5 l/ha, only marginal differences are noted between products.

Water + Anti-drift

With the Cessna 188 using Aleman brand rotary atomizers at an application rate of 5 l/ha, the addition of SpeedWet showed no change in droplet size when compared to water. However, the antidrift product resulted in an increase in Dvo.9 values indicating the presence of some larger droplets. On the other hand, with oil there was a reduction in all values indicating a significant reduction in droplet size.

MACBRI

Produtos Agricolas Ltda. Agricultural Aviation Technology In summary, the addition of adjuvants like SpeedAgro’s SpeedWet can have a major affect to the droplet spectrum. Collection cards positioned at 45 degrees demonstrate the highest efficiency in collecting the most droplets. Using color dye enhances the definition of droplets for analysis and is also very effective in identifying equipment failures. With these tests, deposition aids show a promising effect in increased deposition under conditions of low humidity. Also, equipment type and settings are more important than the product when it comes to the droplet size/spectrum.

Volare

Stay with the two As a youngster, I was as persistent as any young child. It took years for me to mature. During that time, there were good and bad experiences. In the case of technological and production advancements, times require observation, analysis and common sense. Absolutely nothing survives undue criticisms. When I meet people who degrade one technology in favor of another, it sets a ceiling for that person to accept differences. When I hear, for example, someone staunchly defending the ground sprayer over aerial applications, or vice versa, with total disregard of the potential advantages of either, I am compelled to distrust the actual knowledge of the subject this person proclaims to have. I have found misstated texts where the author (probably thinking he is the smartest

of the smart) makes unacceptable statements about what we know is not true. The “fight” between those who advocate air or ground applications, one over the other, will not end any time soon, nor will either give up. Radicals, many times, refuse to talk about using the opposing technology and often they discover too late that both could be used together to optimize resources and maximize profit. Errors are on both sides: Some chemical companies, growers and others are against agricultural aviation with unfounded reasons, as well as are those who advocate aerial applications are the only solution to all problems. I have witnessed the combined use of both technologies with excellent results on farms where formerly only the

ground applicators were used. Growers with business acumen and managerial skills have increasingly promoted such symbiosis. Everybody wins! I confess to AgAir Update readers the theme of this article was chosen due to the photo that accompanies it. I took the photo while working in the field and sent it to AgAir Update’s editor, Bill Lavender. His reply was, “Marcelo, please, write an article about this photo ….” Many things I could have written, but it was pounding in my head that the picture suggests a perfect integration of two technologies, applications by air and ground, working together. The farmer has to put aside tendentious commentaries, get the correct information and exchange information with those who use both types of services.

He should check with professionals who have the expertise and knowledge of the subject at hand and always be suspicious of those who take exception with either “side of the coin.”

AT-504: Learn and earn. With side-by-side cockpit seating and 485-gallon capacity, the AT-504 is a great way to train new ag pilots and earn while they learn. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG turbine engine, you’ll get working speeds and performance like the tried and true AT-502B. And when the training day is done, you’ll see that it was productive workday, too. Wells Fargo financing for qualified buyers is available; just visit with your Air Tractor dealer. T F N

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. T F N
