agair mail medical Being an old flat engine pilot who has little interest in needle nose aircraft and funds are short, I still appreciate receiving the email edition of AgAir Update. Therefore, I have changed my address to: larry.fiese@ yahoo.com. I lost my medical a couple of years ago, thought I was done flying, sold my Pawnee and ended up getting another limited medical. A good Pawnee cannot be found, but I had kept my father’s Super Cub, which is being rebuilt to continue the tradition. Larry Fiese Gothenburg, NE

Hello Larry; Sure glad you got the medical thing worked out. You are right, not many good Pawnees left. Although, they did “pay” for many larger aircraft. I once had a Super Cub (150 hp) with a 90-gallon belly tank. I put a farmer in the back, can’t remember how much I put in the tank, but believe me, it was too much and no good way to lighten the load! Sprayed out the load and was glad to get back on the ground. If you find a few extra dollars, sure would appreciate your print subscription. You are missing a lot with just the eEdition.—Bill

back pain Bill just came from my physical therapist and thought, “How to relive back pain, elbow and legs, etc.” (without Jack Daniels) might be a good article for AgAir Update. I presume I’m not the only one who has some pain related with sitting in the plane all day with the stress and so on. If you’ve done, one please pass on this suggestion to NAAA, if they haven’t. Just getting going up here, thanks Jim “Kaz” Kazmierczak Lodi, WI Hello Kaz; Good to hear things are starting to get going up there in the cold North. Are you suggesting that I pretend to be a doctor and write these articles? I agree, probably many ag-pilots suffer from chronic back and other pains. I even had the endoscopic-style back surgery that was a complete success with less than a weekend down time. However, I wouldn’t know where to start recruiting a doctor to write about all this.— Bill

convention

Post 9/11, the North Dakota Ag Aviation Association decided to promote the agav industry and tell their story. Pictured is their most recent billboard, which is displayed in Bismark, North Dakota. The billboard was chosen for 24/7 advertising, the ability to display a short, important message and a large photo of an ag aircraft (which will get attention from children, farmers and the general public). The NDAAA uses the billboards during May, June, July and August to remind the audience of agricultural aviation’s contribution to the nations’ safe and abundant food supply. Mike and I will be attending the NAAA convention in Savannah in December. Mike would love to get his float plane rating and, since you live in the area, he was wondering if you knew of any reputable instructors. Also, is the weather in December historically suitable for lining up float plane training? Thank you for any help you can give us. Colleen Campbell Campbell Aviation, INC Dutton, MT Hello Colleen; I don’t know of any float plane ops near Savannah, much less a school. Whenever I hear of anyone discussing float plane training, I believe they are referring to somewhere in central Florida and/or Houston, Texas (DW Hooks Airport). Wish I could have been of more help.— Bill

Internation Crop Duster’s Day Just to note that International Crop Duster’s Day is May 27th, to recognize and offer respect to all the young and old crop duster pilots who have committed their skills, knowledge and professionalism to the aerial agricultural applicator profession. It is a day to give a pat-on-the-back to these pilots, and a moment of silence to those who gave their lives. International Crop Duster’s Day Society, 2811 Hwy 573, Anahuac, Texas 77514 oldduster@aol.com Bobby J. WheatFounder. New members are welcome. How about an article on those guys behind the scene, the A&P mechanics that keep those P&W and all the other name brand engines tuned to perfection. I‘ve hung my faith on those guys’ abilities many an hour. Thanks Bill and keep the ink flowing. Bob “Old Duster” Wheat Anahuac, TX Hello Bob; Hope all is well with you. All good here. Yes, I am aware May 27th is ‘International Crop Duster’s Day”. We put a notice in the May edition of AAU, on our Facebook page and our eEditions, worldwide. It is always interesting to read the responses you get, please be sure to forward any. As for the maintenance guys, I totally agree. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind and hopefully I will be able to get something done. One consideration is space. For a technical article to be of any real value, it takes a significant amount of space in the publication. So, the article has to be directed more to awareness than the nittygritty nuts and bolts (no pun intended) of the article.—Bill

mosquito Thanks for the heads-up on the mosquito article in the Laramie Boomerang. I hadn’t seen it yet but I knew it was coming to a head. Expect more of the same as I have backed out of a couple more projects that I have done for years. Finally, the public will have to face the consequences of the NPDES. Stay tuned, could be a wild ride. Dean McClain Torrington, WY I agree. I think your experience is just more to come. If we have to have this, then my hope is it will be snarled up and the howl from the public will be so loud, a “new” EPA will fix it. —Bill P.S. - FYI- for about 15 years I sprayed mosquitoes, both larvacide and adulticides for Kings Bay Naval Submarine base. It was a hoot. —Bill

airplane The dragon fly’s are getting huge here in Arkansas this year. A guy snapped this photo yesterday while I was fertilizing corn. The bug had perfect timing. Kenny Crider Swifton, AR Kenny, I think I saw a mosquito or two like that this past weekend here in Georgia... —Bill

I am looking for used agricultural airplanes in Central Florida. Do you have a company you can recommend? Thank you, Silas Brazil Ola Silas; Your best option is monitoring AgAir Update’s classified section at agairupdate.com. It is the latest information worldwide and is updated daily. Personally, I do not know of any aircraft, but I don’t keep up with them, either. I hope this helps and maybe I will meet you during one of my travels to Brazil this year.—Bill

Well, I am back to Hannibal, Missouri now...Man, it’s been chilly...made me break my rule about not wearing jeans. Anyway, I thought about what you said about the company in North Dakota about UAVs for ag. I am interested in this and would like to talk to them. As a crop duster with UAV experience, I would like to get the ball moving, talk to them and see if we can get something going. I feel there is a need and many farmers would like to see pictures of their fields during the season. I don’t see this so much as variable rate GIS-type data for applications. I believe instead farmers want to see their fields after a storm, or a hail storm, or cold weather damage. I believe this service belongs in the hands of Part 137 operators as an added business....whether it’s on the application airplane or on a UAV. Other than that...wore out...tired and I haven’t even really started the hard spraying yet. Hope this finds you, Sandy and your family well. Jason Blanke Jay’s Flying Service LLC hopes they equal Puerto Rico. Obviously, knowing someone like Hannibal Airport yourself at the destination makes the trip a success. Hannibal, MO I am copying a very dear and longtime friend, Cindy SchreiberBeck, with your email. She is working with the UAV people in North Hello Jason; Dakota and comes from an ag-aviation background. I am sure she Good to hear from you. I was just yesterday organizing my photos will contact you, if not, let me know and I will follow up. and looking at the ones I took in Puerto Rico while visiting you. Stay warm and safe this year. Remember, you are on a mission Sandy and I vowed to make similar business trips each year with of rice spraying/fertilizing in PR! —Bill

from the S.E.A.T.

Spinning an AT-802? The 2012 fire season is now in full swing for the south and southwest regions. It is hoped that it will not be nearly as intense as last year’s season. The National Weather Service has declared the La Niña weather pattern over and the drought conditions that plagued the region are slowly waning. Western regions have experienced a wet winter adding to already a heavy fuel load, setting the stage for a past due active season. Many government fire agencies are feeling the economic pinch brought on by the sluggish economy. Funds for prevention and suppression are tight. With aerial firefighting assets being the most expensive tool in the box, they could be used much more conservatively. Agencies that in the past have pre-positioned aircraft in fire prone areas now will be calling in assets after a fire has started and releasing those assets after the fire is out. The Texas Forest Service, for instance, has already stated it will employ those tactics in 2012. That state agency still owes over one-hundred sixty million dollars from suppression of fires in years past. In this issue of AirFire & Forestry, you will read an article about my recent attendance to the SEAT academy in Sacramento, California. The AT-802 simulators there are a great training tool. I had reservations before I went, but they

were squashed as I went through the program. Where else can you intentionally spin a fully loaded AT-802 and live to tell about it. I look for the program to only improve with time. The National Heavy Airtanker fleet is now down to only ten aircraft. One of the P2-Vs was found to have a crack in its wing spar and repairs are just not financially practical considering the limited life of the aircraft. There will be a real tug-of-war for these assets as the season heats up. On a recent fire in West Texas, six of them were used for several days. That’s sixty percent of the fleet on one fire incident! The fire mentioned above was the Livermore Ranch Complex. It was a real threat to a resort community high in the Davis Mountains. At its apex, there were six heavies, six SEATs and two helicopters working it. I have never before experienced such a smooth flow of aircraft in the fire traffic area. The Air Attacks and Lead Plane pilots are to be commended. It was a real pleasure to work with these professionals.

I hope everyone has a safe and profitable season. Remember to always leave yourself an out and I hope to see you in the mountains one day.

Pushing

the Envelope

By Marc Mullis

As I lined up on runway 34 at the McCall, Idaho airport, I mentally went through the flightplan for the upcoming mission. The Air Tractor AT-802 I was piloting was loaded to its maximum gross weight of 16,000 pounds. I would make a left downwind departure after takeoff and climb to what I thought was a safe altitude for a series of stalls. The airspace chosen for the maneuvers was over a relatively flat area in the otherwise mountainous terrain. The first stalls would be rather simple and progress into more complex entries. After clearing the airspace I set up for the first in a series of stalls which would be wings level and power off. The aircraft gave plenty of warning as it approached the break, the stick trembled and the nose nodded at the horizon. As the stall became fully developed I unloaded the wing, kept the wings level with the rudder

F-12

and slowly advanced the power lever for an altitude loss of about six-hundred feet. I progressed into stalls out of turns which produced a more pronounced break and a greater loss of altitude, but they were still very manageable. My last maneuver would be a full-power stall out of a forty-five degree right bank. There was little or no warning as the right wing snapped over the top and I suddenly found myself in an ever tightening spin with the ground rushing up at me. I reduced the power, applied right rudder,

forward stick and waited. The aircraft impacted the ground just as the rotation stopped. I leaned back in the seat and asked the simulator operator for a reset and was instantly back on the runway at McCall, ready for another flight. Actually, I was not at McCall. The flight simulator I was in only showed me to be there. In reality, I was at McClellan Airpark in Sacramento, California. McClellen is a sprawling ex-United States Air Force Base that has been retired and turned over for civilian and government use. After it changed hands, the United States Forest Service built a huge training facility there for the education of wildland firefighters. One part of the complex contains the flight simulator room. The floor space within contains numerous non-motion simulators which represent heavy air tankers, lead-planes, helicopters and recently added single-engine air tankers.

All can be linked together both visually and audibly. All the action can be projected onto a big screen monitor in the class room area. I was there in early March to attend the National Single Engine Air Tanker Academy. The Department of Interior contract we operate under requires all carded pilots to attend the training program at least every thirty-six months. In the past, the Bureau of Land Management, which administers the contract, conducted the Academy in Safford, Arizona utilizing actual aircraft on simulated missions. Budget restraints and liability led the BLM to purchase two AT-802 simulators to be infused into the up and running system at McClellen. This is the second year the units have been operational.

Getting quality instruction in the AT-802 simulator.

The Academy is limited to eight participants per class. The class is then divided into two flights. The flights alternate between time in the classroom and the simulators. The instructors are top of the line individuals pulled from throughout the aerial firefighting world. The structure allows a lot of one on one interaction between participant and instructor. The small classes also let the program be customized for new or experienced pilots. Pilots new to the program will spend the classroom time learning the basics of all aspects of aerial firefighting while battle hardened pilots can concentrate on more advanced subjects. At the end of each day, the two flights are brought together for a de-brief and sharing of thoughts. Day one of the three-day program is spent in orientation in the simulator room. It starts with the National Lead Plane Program Manager, Rusty Warbis, giving a demonstration in the AT-802 on what our first mission should look like. I wish I had paid closer attention to Rusty’s demo because the tips he gave would prove to be pretty handy on later operational missions. Participants are then urged to spend time and get used to any simulators they should choose. This period would lead to my stall-spin accident mentioned earlier. The simulators are very similar in performance to their respective aircraft as are the location of controls and radio panels. They are however not designed to teach one how to actually fly the aircraft but how to perform procedures. After becoming comfortable in the AT-802, I moved into the lead-plane/ King Air sim and it was amazingly realistic. The wrap-around monitors lend a real sense of motion as some of the pilots claimed a hint of airsickness. I finished the day in the Sikorsky Skycrane. With a little coaching from Rusty, I was actually able to take-off in the loaded helicopter, drop a load on a fire and return for a safe, if not smooth, landing. Day two arrives and the game is on. We are handed a dispatch form just as if we are at the tanker base. As two pilots of the flight fly the mission the other two observe the action. The first mission is an initial attack where the air attack has not yet arrived. We were asked to give dispatch a size-up on the fire and determine where we thought our load of retardant would do the most good. After the mission we are critiqued on our procedures and decisions. With the simulator, one does not have to return to the base to get more retardant so multiple drops could be made in a short period of time. Each thirty-minute session in the machine seemed like hours of actual mission time. Every successive mission became more and more complex as more aircraft and ground equipment

were added to the mix. With more complexity came more procedures and again after each flight we were critiqued on our performance. By day three all of the participants had become quite comfortable with the nuances of the simulators and that was a good thing, as it would be an action packed day. We would be flying out of Jackson, Wyoming and the extreme terrain and addition of a lead plane would require everyone to be at the top of their game. Numerous aircraft filled the animated sky as we launched on a fire located in an urban interface area. Close attention had to be paid to spacing as multiple aircraft got in line to drop retardant or water in the target area. The radios were alive with chatter and it took concentration to filter out calls meant for your aircraft. I think that all participants may have pushed the edge a little because they knew the reset button was near and handy. At the end of the day there had been several accidents and close calls but because they happened in the simulators they were all incidents we could learn from on the spot. All simulations are recorded and can be replayed

for review and used in the training environment. In the old days at Safford, we were limited to two, maybe three missions per day and an accident was just that and could not be reset. It was difficult to learn under such conditions and the pressure to succeed out weighed any educational benefits. The majority of the participants in my class were seasoned pilots and they all agreed this training event was very useful and worth the time and effort. All are subject to developing bad habits over the years and training methods such as this tend to uncover them and make the individual aware of them. I would like to commend the new National SEAT Program Manager, Glen Claypool, for putting the program together and making it a resounding success. He did an outstanding job of revamping the SEAT training program which

had been souring for years. I think he recognized that much of the recurrent training we had been receiving was redundant and useless in bringing our pilots up to a common standard. Pilots were being subjected to the same materials that were introduced to them in their initial training years ago. With new technology in our grasp it makes for new training opportunities that are economical and productive. For example cheap in-flight cameras that record all the action on real missions are but one of the many tools we have at our disposal. They are invaluable for bringing new pilots up to speed on what is happening in the real world. With all the new technology at our disposal, there is one thing that I have not been able to locate at the local avionics shop, the reset button for my 802!

Safety for aerial firefighters by Marc Mullis Smoke from a wildland fire seems to draw general aviation aircraft much the same as the flame from a candle will draw a moth. It is just human nature to go take a closer look. The unwitting pilot approaching a smoke column that seems to be out in the middle of nowhere is probably unaware that he or she is about to enter some of the most congested airspace on earth; and that it is more than likely protected by a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR). Wildfires are the number one generator of TFRs in the United States and they are put up solely for the safety of the pilots engaged in fighting the fire.

After a fatal mid-air collision involving two airtankers over a fire a couple of decades ago, the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) decided to establish standardized rules for aircraft operating over a fire. At that time the Fire Traffic Area (FTA) was born. An extended attack fire may have a dozen or more aircraft operating in the airspace above it at any one time so it was essential that these rules be established. It is the responsibility of the Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) to provide clearances in and out of the FTA and provide proper separation for both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft in the area. As the activity over a fire ramps up, it is normally the duty of the ATGS to establish a TFR over the incident. It only takes a call to dispatch followed by a request to the Federal Aviation Administration and the TFR can be in place in less than thirty minutes. If the unknowing general aviation pilot penetrates the TFR without a clearance not only are they creating safety concerns but more than likely, legal issues. A check of NOTAMs and TFRs should always be included in flight planning but keep in mind that a TFR could have been established after you became airborne. To be safe if you see smoke stay well clear and be extra vigilant for aerial firefighters going to or from the fire.

Colusa; An interview with Norm Hunter The film industry and the media have not been kind to agricultural aviation. Hollywood has depicted us as drunken louts and incompetent rejects. The media has portrayed “Crop Dusters” as poison spewing hap-hazard cowboys with no regard for safety, people, or the environment. It is no surprise that when a film maker enters the arena of ag aviation and pitches the idea of a movie where the main characters are ag pilots the first reaction is one of suspicion, doubt and in some cases complete rejection. Enter Norm Hunter. A film producer, writer and director, who has a vision of a romantic family-rated film that will bear the name of the town in which the story takes place; the Northern California farming town of Colusa. Here, rice is the primary crop and understandably the story involves the aerial application of rice seed.

The first thing to note about Norm Hunter is that he is not a typical Hollywood guy. He has an Ivy League education in aerospace engineering, but possess a blue collar personality; the kind of guy that would wear a tuxedo with grease under his finger nails. A glider pilot and formula race car builder and driver; he is ostensibly a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Perhaps it is one thing that makes him a dedicated aviation enthusiast and causes him to gravitate toward ag flying for the basis of his movie.

13 YEARS

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Norm at Rick Richter’s office in Maxwell California, just up the road from the town of Colusa.

Having discussed the concerns that most of us would have as to the portrayal of our industry, I asked Norm what his intention was as far as characterizing ag pilots and operators in his film. “I have the utmost regard and respect for ag pilots.” He said, “I intend to portray you guys in the film just as you are. Completely professional, evolved and family-oriented. Ag pilots are the unsung heroes of aviation and I want to show all the work and dedication that goes in to doing what you do.”

GPS Systems for Aerial Applicators Only

Grow With Us

He went on to mention his ultimate goal. “I want to give the audience a good story, a good solid family film that highlights American agriculture and food production. I’m filming here, away from the toxicity of L.A. where it is image over substance, where everything is superficial. This is the movie I want to make and this is the place to do it, where I can focus on the kind of family values that is predominant in agricultural communities like Colusa.” As an industry, we need to keep in mind this is a movie about family drama, romance and conflict resolution. It is not a documentary about ag aviation. There will always be a line between producing a dramatic film and recording the reality of an industry. Ag aviation serves as the back drop and part of the vehicle that carries the story forward. However it is not the primary focus of the film. There are some “sensational maneuvers” planned and I know I am not the only one to caution Norm on the use of shots too far out from the realm

of reality or even possibility. A movie has to have excitement and I am sure it is inevitable to see a few eyebrow raisers during the course of the film. He assures us, however, they are few and the normal flying ag pilots do is plenty exciting for the audience. There will be cockpit footage that demonstrates the actual flying an ag pilot does. Norm mentioned this footage will be shown just as it is done every day in ag planes across the country, “Totally pro and totally cool.” I know throughout the industry feelings toward this film will be mixed. I think most of us will be cautiously optimistic at best. Norm has done his home work. He has studied and observed ag flying in Northern California; he has enlisted the help of none other than Rick Richter to act as mentor and advisor during the planning and production of the movie. He has talked with over twenty agpilots and ag-operators and has gleaned volumes of information in order to maintain technical accuracy and scene

construction; from quick turn arounds in the loading area to precision flying. Perhaps the movie “Colusa” represents an opportunity for the industry to cooperate with a film maker in order to produce a mutually beneficial product. The time could be right for ag aviation to hit the silver screen in a positive

light. I think if we reject the notion out of hand, the next guy who decides to make a movie with ag-pilots as central characters might not go to the trouble or take the time to consult with folks in our industry. Perhaps this movie might set a positive precedence for any that might follow will have to emulate. I don’t know for sure, but I’m cautiously optimistic.

Transland - redefining ag-aviation dispersal equipment During the 1950s, ag-aviation developed a need for sophisticated dispersal equipment. The time for homemade devices used for aerial dusting operations was rapidly coming to an end and liquid applications were on the horizon. With this evolution in mind, Conrad Barlow formed Transland, Inc., a California-based company dedicated to the development and manufacture of the most modern dispersal equipment of that time.

An overview of the Transland, LLC facility in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Valve

Fast forward more than 50 years Founder Conrad Barlow passes away in his 80s in 2004. He had brought Transland from its infancy to the undisputed leader in dispersal equipment. With Barlow no longer running the company, it was sold to Texas entrepreneur James Frank in the spring of 2007. Frank moved the

company from Harbor City, California to its current home in Wichita Falls, Texas. In June 2007, Transland, LLC was fully operational with only five employees, of which three came from the Californiabased Transland. Today, Transland employs 31 full-time employees, that includes three engineers. The company manufactures a full line of high quality, all stainless steel dispersal ag-aviation equipment from its newly acquired (2011) facility near the Kickapoo Airport in Wichita Falls. The facility is 130,000-square foot facility shared with Sharp Iron Group, a contract manufacturer in light sheet metal fabrication, precision machining and design. Sharp Iron Group is also a James Frank company. When Frank bought Transland, Inc.

Roberto Rodriguez, general manager, goes over blueprints for a Transland product.

one of his goals was to continue to bring the very best and innovative dispersal equipment to the ag-aviation industry. In doing so, Transland now offers a complete line of stainless steel products. This virtually eliminated corrosion and increased overall strength. A complete, all-stainless steel liquid dispersal system on an ag-aircraft only increases the gross weight by 25-30 pounds. In keeping with Transland’s mission

to be the best and complete ag-aviation dispersal equipment company, it recently purchased the STC for the “Wingman”, formally a dry loading assist product manufactured by Frost Flying Service. The Wingman eliminates the need for a person to jump onto the wing to open and close the hopper door while spreading the fertilizer. Presently, the Wingman STC is for the AT-802, AT-602 and AT502. Transland intends to improve the hydraulically driven Wingman, as well as add more aircraft to the STC list. The Wingman will become available through the Transland dealer network in the summer of 2012. New products that Transland, LLC has developed in the past five years are: • An all stainless steel SSG Fire Gate for the AT-802. It is a bomb bay-style gate that was originally developed for Canadian firefighting company Conair. • A Seeder Plate that positions inside the throat of the hopper to even and slow the outward flow of seeds. It opens and closes to prescribed gate openings, accurately delivering the desired poundage of product through the gate. It eliminates the mechanical linkage to the gate door, including the emergency dump feature. The emergency dump feature is controlled by a manual valve that is opened by a second dedicated accumulator for emergencies that will keep pressure in the system should the hydraulic pump fail. The future for hopper gate operation is hydraulics and Transland is fully vested towards it. Other Transland stainless steel products include: • Center boom with Camloc connectors and strainer section • Meterate with updated bearings that can be greased and a new style gear mechanism that is easier to change. • Boom hangars for all model Air Tractors • Over-center boom hanger clamps • Pump mounts • Booms • Pumps • Valves

NATA Operation SAFE sponsored by BASF by Alan Corr, Certified S.A.F.E. Analyst As was the case last year, early spring pattern testing has been slow due mainly to weather conditions. Only in a few cases has rain been the issue, mainly it’s been the wind. Early pest issues have also been keeping a number of operators busy this year. Pattern testing has gotten into full swing during the past few weeks and should continue strongly until fungicide season. I have tested seven planes so far this spring and have an additional thirty planes scheduled. The planes tested so far this year have mainly been either new aircraft or planes that have a new boom set-up or nozzle replacement. One positive item that was brought to my attention with two new AT-502s this year is that the tube was already braced and secured under the aircraft when the plane arrived. This has not been the case in the past and there have been issues with the tubes coming apart within

the first few hours of use. Again, please check to make sure the tube is secure especially at the up side of the bypass valve. As we get into herbicide season it is vitally important to consider drift potential, especially when spraying around sensitive crops and farmsteads. A large droplet size is vitally important. I also strongly recommend the use of drift retardants, and although I can’t recommend a particular one, I have not come across any that have not performed as they should. Some likely are better than others, but again, the ones I have tested do reduce drift. While reducing drift, it

is important to remember that they do not eliminate drift. I am sure that we all know applying herbicide in a 14 mph wind is not a good idea. The crosswind studies I conducted last year show when applying two gallons per acre, the 14 mph crosswind can move three tenths of a gallon per acre over 300 feet downwind with no additive, and over a tenth of a gallon per acre with a drift retardant. Lesser amounts were applied all the way out to 450 feet downwind. A nine mph brought those application rates back to 230 feet downwind. Even with a four mph crosswind, an application rate of one-tenth of a gallon per acre was recorded 150 feet downwind from the center of the aircraft. Reducing the application height from eight feet to four feet for spraying does not reduce drift. It will apply more product directly under the aircraft, but will in fact drift farther downwind than the eight foot spray height. Again, for herbicide application, you should have a volume mean diameter of at least 400 microns (and up to 500 microns, if possible) and consider the use of a drift retardant product to reduce drift potential. I truly appreciate both BASF’s and NATA’s involvement and sponsorship of Operation SAFE here in Nebraska. It is a highly successfully program and a vital part of increasing spray efficiency and effectiveness. Please have a safe spray season!

EPA issues Section 18 label for BASF fungicide in Louisiana RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – To help fight strobilurinresistant sheath blight that threatens yields and crop quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted emergency access for aerial applicators and Louisiana growers to apply Sercadis™ fungicide to their rice fields.

current outbreak of sheath blight as “the most economically significant in Louisiana rice production since the early 1970s.”2 Sheath blight typically infects the culms at the water line between the late tillering and joint elongation growth stages, and can progress rapidly, causing tiller lodging and collapse.

The State of Louisiana received approval from the U.S. EPA for emergency use of Sercadis because there are currently no other alternatives for effective control. Such Section 18 labels are granted to states where problems can be clearly identified within a specified geography, where there are no other alternatives for control and where there is a significant risk of major economic damage.

Sheath blight can spread from tiller to tiller within a rice field. Farmers commonly rotate rice with soybeans, which can also carry the disease, known in soybeans as aerial web blight.

Resistant sheath blight has created these conditions in southern Louisiana. Louisiana State University’s AgCenter refers to the

Under the emergency exemption, Louisiana growers will be able to obtain Sercadis fungicide at specific retail locations that are near the area where resistance is identified. “BASF is determined to help Louisiana growers solve this pressing problem with a solution that has been researched,” said Paul Rea, Vice President, U.S. Crop Protection, BASF. “BASF was happy to share its research data with officials from Louisiana to help them fight this disease,” Rea said. “It is innovative products like Sercadis that will help protect yields from tough diseases for rice farmers throughout the region in the years to come.” As an industry leader, BASF is dedicated to providing resistancemanagement solutions, technical support and educational tools to help growers implement disease management program based on best practices. “Sercadis provides an optimized formulation of a carboxamide fungicide, providing both disease control and preventive benefits in rice, while combating sheath blight with a new mode of action,” said Brianne Reeves, Technical Market Specialist, BASF. Sercadis contains Xemium® fungicide, a new active ingredient in the carboxamide family. Xemium also is the active ingredient in two new products—Merivon®fungicide and Priaxor™ fungicide— which recently received registration by the U.S. EPA. Priaxor will be used primarily on row crops as well as select specialty crops, such as potatoes and tomatoes. Merivon received registration on specialty fruit crops, specifically pome fruits, such as apples and pears, and stone fruits, including cherries and peaches.

Adhere to the PAASS motto with these summer safety tips “Upon the performance of each rests the fate of all.” If you’ve ever attended the PAASS Program at a state convention then you have heard those words uttered more than once. NAAA and its sister organization, NAAREF, take that motto seriously and ag pilots should too. Particularly, now that the summer flying season is in full swing and all eyes are upon us. With that in mind, here is a daily checklist to follow to ensure your season is safe and productive, provided by the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) and the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF). Guard Against Fatigue. Increased activity leads to longer flying days and less time off for rest. Many times pilot error accidents are the result of poor decision making that can be traced directly to the effects of fatigue. Flying while fatigued can easily be fatal! Fatigue is not always easy to recognize, but when tasks normally completed with ease require extra concentration, chances are the effects of fatigue are starting to seep in. It is a known fact a person is a very poor judge of his or her own physical or mental condition. Senior Air Medical Examiner Dr. Mark Ivey, a helicopter pilot and an expert in sleep medicine, has some simple advice to combat in-the-cockpit fatigue: take a nap. “They’re not just for kids,” Ivey told Agricultural Aviation magazine.

6

agairupdate.com

“Humans have two periods during the 24 hours where they are sleepiest: 0300 and 1500. These are also the times when fatal motor vehicle accidents occur the most. Most ag operators are not flying at 0300, and 1500 is usually the heat of the day. So take a nap for 20-40 minutes around 1500 and then take one or two cups of brewed coffee.” Remember to get a good night’s sleep too. Drink Plenty of Water: Dehydration sets in quickly when the heat index rises and can lead to more severe heat-related illnesses. Keep yourself and your crew hydrated by providing plenty of fresh water to replace what gets lost during the day through perspiration, urination and respiration. Early symptoms of mild dehydration are headaches, chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain and constipation. Urine with a strong odor along with a yellow or amber color indicates the need for more water. Thirst is the most obvious sign, but people typically don’t realize they are thirsty until well after the shortage of water occurs. Rehydrating is another reason to take frequent breaks. Establish Personal Minimums: NAAA encourages each pilot to establish personal minimums and make them hard and fast rules to live by. In your desire to get the job completed quickly and still do a good job for your customer, it can be very easy to justify an action “just

this one time.” Spur-of-the-moment decisions can bite you. Establish your own personal minimums after giving consideration to all conceivable hazards and evaluating mitigation measures for those hazards. Once established, the safety bar should not be lowered just because you were able to get away with something once. Watch Out for Obstructions: Obstructions are one of the most dangerous hazards for pilots operating in the low-level portion of the airspace. You should use every method available to learn the location of obstructions in or near the field to be treated. Beware of new obstructions. The number of telecommunications towers, GPS differential signal towers, wind energy towers and turbines and other obstructions erected in agricultural regions has increased significantly over the past several years. This is an area of grave concern for aerial applicators and NAAA. During the last 10 years, groundaffixed obstructions (trees, power lines, towers, etc.) have accounted for 18% of the ag accidents and 32% of the fatalities. Help yourself, your customers and the entire industry by joining NAAA’s “Let’s Be Fair About Sharing the Air” campaign to inform farmers and landowners of the threat construction of towers and other obstructions adjacent to farm fields will have on your safety and your customers’ ability to have their crop aerially protected. To learn more about this campaign, please visit www.agaviation. org/towers.htm.

Ferry Above 500 AGL: When ferrying, remember the PAASS safety phrase “Ferry Above Five and Stay Alive” to keep yourself above power lines, unmarked towers and other ag aircraft conducting spray operations. Another important consideration in many parts of the country is ferrying at or above 500 feet is required by FAA regulations. Flying at a higher altitude has the additional advantage of allowing more reaction time in the case of an aircraft or engine malfunction. Check Temporary Flight Restrictions: As the presidential campaign kicks into high gear, so too will the number of VIP Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs). The aviation industry already has seen a marked increase in the number of VIP TFRs published this year. Checking TFRs before you fly is always important, but you should be even more vigilant about checking VIP TFRs until the elections are over. A list of current TFRs are available on AgAir Update’s website, www. agairupdate.com/tfr.php ly 1 ive Ju t c e ff rates E rship e b m e Fly Safe! These important safety alerts are sent every other Monday in April, May, June and August and every Monday in July, which historically has been the peak month for ag accidents. Additional safety reminders are issued whenever aviation activity warrants them.

Funding for NAAREF services and programs, such as PAASS, the Fly Safe campaign and Operation S.A.F.E., comes from NAAA and other donors willing to invest in the future of agricultural aviation. We invite you to join the cause of preserving and protecting the aerial application industry, your livelihood and your life by joining NAAA. If you aren’t an NAAA member already, this is a great time to join. You’ll save an average of 10% if you sign up by June 30, before NAAA’s new dues structure goes into effect July 1. question and answer

FAA’s Aerospace Medical Certification Division

Question: In 2004, I had an exercise EKG for a UK Civil Aviation Authority first-class medical and an anomaly was found with the reading. I went to our local hospital for a follow-up examination and was found to have a narrowing of my left descending atrium. A stent was installed in 2004 and I now take one 2.5 mg Bisoprolol tablet per day. I had no indications of any heart problem before, and I have had none since. I have also recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and am taking one 500mg Metformin tablet per day.

I haven’t flown since 2004 and I wish to renew my second- or third-class medical, in order to exercise privileges as a flight instructor. Is this possible?

Answer: Yes it is. The requirements for full second-class privileges are different than those of third-class or private pilot. This is especially true for the stent insertion. All airmen who request second-class medical certification for this procedure must provide the FAA with a maximal nuclear stress test performed according to the

Question: I am a 49-year-old male single engine VFR pilot who recently just purchased a Skyhawk for our small flying club. At the age of 43, I had a minor heart attack that required two stents. I fly now with a special issuance that must be updated annually, but I’d also like to teach. My health is excellent according to my cardiologist, and I exercise and take my medications religiously. Is getting a CFI for me possible?

The regulations—specifically, 14 CFR 67.401— state that an airman must demonstrate that he or she is safe to fly for the time period of the medical certificate. In a special issuance, the airman must provide evaluations or medical tests to demonstrate that to the Federal Air Surgeon, and then re-demonstrate that fact on a recurring basis. Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid levels, can cause effects on the human body that could adversely impact one’s ability to fly safely. This condition can cause weakness, severe depression, memory loss, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. For these reasons, it is important for the FAA to have regular data showing that the airman is not hypothyroid, and is “euthyroid,” as your physician will call it.

Answer: Yes sir, it is very possible. Since treated coronary artery disease is one of the FAA’s specifically disqualifying medical conditions, you must demonstrate to the Federal Air Surgeon that you are safe to fly. You will need to provide us with all of the medical records from the heart attack and the stent insertion, plus undergo the testing that you can locate with the first two URL addresses in the previous question. The Federal Air Surgeon’s Cardiology Consultant Panel must review the cases of ALL airmen who request first or second-class medical certification. This is a panel of cardiologists familiar with aviation medicine who will review your case when it is ready, and make a recommendation whether to grant you a waiver. If you are granted a waiver, known in the FAA as an Authorization for Special Issuance, you will need to provide the FAA with evaluation and testing at least once a year in order to maintain your certification.

money talk

Samuel L. Miller, smiller@SLMmodels.com

Bidding jobs for a profit To realize a profit from any flying job requires financial planning. The plan should cover the period of time you intend to own and operate the aircraft. When preparing a specific contract, the contract period and hourly utilization will have an impact upon the bid. Establishing a standard hourly rate assuming an annual hourly utilization is a crucial step. Lower rates might be charged for contract periods that provide greater than the average hourly utilization. What long-term “Return On Investment” (ROI) percentage is desired for the aircraft investment? This will vary

with current economic conditions and other competing investments. I suggest basing the long-term ROI goal over a five-year ownership period. Determine the profitability of the investment by applying the “time value of money” principle. You purchase the aircraft. You operate the aircraft for a five-year period. You sell the aircraft. Use an annual hourly utilization that is attainable in your market area to determine the monthly after-tax cash flow for this aircraft over the fiveyear period. By using a financial model you can evaluate how changes in expenses and revenue affect profitability. Creating a financial analysis spreadsheet that considers all the costs and revenues is a time consuming process. However, the final product is worth

After deciding on the expense values and other factors to be used in the final projection, then determine the standard hourly revenue rate that will produce the desired ROI. Calculate the “Net Present Value” (NPV) of the after-tax cash flow using the desired ROI percentage as the discount rate in the NPV formula. If the NPV value is zero then you have achieved the desired ROI. Use Microsoft Excel’s “Goal Seek” feature to change the hourly revenue rate until the NPV is zero (remember to use the desired ROI as the discount rate in the NPV formula). You have the standard hourly rate to produce the desired ROI. Now, you can

the effort. By changing one factor at a time in a financial model, determine the sensitivity of the investment return to the factor being changed. Vary each of the different costs and revenue to determine the factors that change ROI significantly. After identifying the most important factors, you will know the critical items that are controlling the ROI. Manage these factors or react to their changes by adjusting the revenue rate to achieve a consistent ROI.

apply your business sense to your current situation to determine the hourly rate you will bid on the job.

Other “Business Sense” factors to address are: The value of your service to the client. The competition. Major input items might change during the contract length to significantly vary the ROI such as fuel price, remote storage, deadhead to maintenance base or other contract commitments, pilot travel expenses, insurance, etc. It might be wise to change the rate based upon increases in one or more of these items. The long-term analysis provided the standard hourly rate to produce the desired ROI. You should have a good business reason to charge less than the standard rate calculated. Can the new job be performed without risking less service to your current business? “The devil is in the details.” So are the profits. I hope this helps you bid your next job for a profit. Nebraska Aviation Trade Association extends grant to UNL Extension for safer skies By Larry Schulze, NATA Communications Director During the January 2012 Nebraska Aviation Trades Association Board of Directors meeting, Larry Schulze informed the Directors of a developing University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension program of interest about MET tower awareness. John Hay, Extension Educator – Energy, of the Department of Biological Systems Engineering in Lincoln was creating an Extension program in which he would contact owners of MET towers in Nebraska, inform them of the FAA guidance on the marking of MET towers, and encourage their compliance to do so. Hay learned about the FAA guidance after NATA had written him last November and complimented him on his newly created “Wired For Wind” 4-H program in which 4-H members construct model wind turbines.

Since very few MET towers are properly marked in Nebraska, the NATA Directors saw value in getting more MET towers marked in our State as per FAA guidance. The Directors decided to ask John Hay to submit a project proposal for consideration for possible funding by our Association. After reviewing John Hay’s program proposal at the February Board meeting, the NATA Directors decided to provide a grant in the amount of $2000.00 to UNL Extension to support the “MET Tower Marking Awareness Program.” The NATA grant is for the following components of this program:

• An awareness program / communications to MET tower owners encouraging MET tower markings as per FAA guidance and tower registration with the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics • • An annual report to NATA during the length of the project by each January 31st on program activities, successes, and accomplishments as a result of the “MET Tower Marking Awareness Program” and the NATA grant. • NATA President Brian Wilcox offered an ag spray plane and pilot for videotaping to demonstrate a liquid application (of water) to cropland in the vicinity of a MET tower to assist in the production of the two video programs.

• Materials and supplies to mark one MET tower with paint striping, marker balls, and guy wire sleeves (at ground anchor points) as per FAA Guidance. • The taping and production of two video programs published to YouTube.com to demonstrate the steps to install markings on a MET tower as outlined by FAA guidance with grant acknowledgement to NATA in the sponsor’s credits in the opening segment of the video programs. The NATA Board of Directors required the following program components: • Acknowledgement of NATA as grantor (with its logo) in video programs and other communications with program stakeholders

Meanwhile, Hay has constructed a map of Nebraska in which each MET tower registered with the NE Department of Aeronautics is identified. The map shows the locations of each of the Nebraska 85 MET towers as he began his program in mid-March 2012. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension network is also involved in the “MET Tower Awareness Program.” In the last few days, Hay contacted each Extension Educator – Agriculture across Nebraska. The Educators learned of Hay’s program and of the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics web site (http://www.aero. state.ne.us/windTowers. htm) where MET towers are registered.

As an example of how fluid this industry is, Hay immediately learned that about 15% of the addresses of the owners on the Aeronautics web site had changed. As a result, he is finding that the owners’ email addresses may be the best method for contact. He is continuing contacting the owners and following up as needed.

Extension educators were asked to scout for MET towers in their counties Extension educators were asked to scout for MET towers in their counties and determine if the towers were registered with Aeronautics. tower that was not registered with the Department of Aeronautics. I have contacted the owner and they are moving to get it registered.” The two video programs that will be produced this summer will show the steps to install markings as per FAA guidance will have national impact because the videos will be available on the YouTube.com web site. Owners of MET towers in other states will learn of the FAA marking guidance and the steps in marking the towers. The video programs will further encourage additional MET towers across the country to be in compliance. Ag pilots in other states will also be able to provide the web addresses for the video programs to MET tower owners in their respective states to further increase the awareness of the FAA guidance for the marking of these towers. The Nebraska Aviation Trades Association is excited about this Extension program to encourage MET tower markings and tower registration. NATA is pleased to announce that this is the first grant that the Association has provided to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. NATA has had a long history of working with UNL Extension and acknowledge that John Hay’s program is important to ag pilots. Lives will be saved because additional MET towers will be marked as per FAA guidance and their visibility will be improved. Safety of flight will be enhanced.

wing and a prayer

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

The righteousness of Jesus Christ gets you into God’s heaven All religions, except Christianity, teach that humanity must relate to God by their good works. The reason these religions have gained a strong foothold in many people’s lives is because humanity is incurable arrogant and self-righteous—we love to boast of ourselves and our accomplishments. The problem of

trying to relate to God on the basis of our good works is that God is absolutely holy and perfect, and humans are natural born sinners and full of imperfections! Isaiah wrote, “Your iniquities have separated you

from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you” (Isaiah 59:2). “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). How can sinful humanity relate to a righteous God who cannot look with approval upon sin? Without God’s help we can’t—but the self-righteous nature of humanity causes us to try anyway.

We make up a list of good things and bad things—everyone’s list is different. Then we try to live according to the standards that we have established—but we will fail to keep our own list of rules! We think that if we can live close enough to our list of good things we are relating to God. But we are actually trying to make God a debtor to us because of our own self-righteousness—and God will not be a debtor to humanity. Isaiah said, “We are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness works are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Humanity has a sin problem; what can we do about it? Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” His disciples then asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:23-26). It is impossible to buy or work your way into God’s heaven. The people asked Jesus, “What shall we do, that we may do the works of God?”Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent” (John 6:28-29). Trusting in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is the only way you can become righteous enough to enter into God’s heaven.

back to His Father in heaven so believers can receive the Holy Spirit. While Jesus was in His earthly body He couldn’t be omnipresent. When Jesus ascended into heaven He entered into the eternal, timeless and space-less existence so He could become omnipresent in the universe (Psalm 139:1-12). Jesus said, “For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them …I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 18:20, 28:20). Jesus Christ does not live in any earthly building—Jesus dwells in His people! “I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you…The Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands” (John 14:20, Acts 7: 48). Every person who trusts in Jesus Christ receives His Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:1314), and becomes a part of the body of Christ, the church.

Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Jesus said, “Now I go away to Him who sent Me…It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you” (John 16:5-7). Jesus is telling His disciples that He must go

“When the Holy Spirit has come He will convict the world of sin…because they do not believe in Me.” Not believing in Jesus Christ is the only sin God will not forgive; all other sins are forgiven when we place our faith in Jesus Christ. But whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in Jesus Christ. The reason people don’t believe is because they don’t want to give up their ungodly lifestyle (John 3:16-19). Rejecting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is blaspheming the witness of the Holy Spirit and is the unpardonable sin. Jesus said, “Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matthew 12:31-32). “When the Holy Spirit has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness… of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more” (John 16:8-10). When Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:1-10) He demonstrated the righteousness that God will allow into heaven! How do you get the righteousness of Jesus Christ? The only thing you can do is believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior! Paul said he counted his righteous deeds as rubbish when compared to the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:8-9). Jesus Christ is the only name under heaven

given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). “For God made Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ!” (2 Corinthians 5:21). “When the Holy Spirit comes He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment…because the ruler of this world is judged” (John 16:8-11). Satan is the ruler of this world (John 12:31, 1 John 5:19), and Jesus Christ judged and totally defeated Satan at the Cross (Colossians 2:15, 1 John 3:8). Satan still roams the earth seeking to defeat Christians and capture souls, but he will eventually be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10). Satan still has power over anyone who has not put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). But Satan’s power over Christians is broken, because, “Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Jesus Christ’s divine power has given Christians everything we need to live a life of victory over our sinful flesh, Satan, and this satanically controlled world. Jesus Christ came that we may have eternal life, and that we may have it more abundantly…And have an abundant entry into God’s heaven (John 10:10, 2 Peter 1:11). Don’t wait! Choose Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today!

Buffalo County, NE OKs new rule for wind turbines KEARNEY, NE (AP) – Buffalo County authorities have approved erection of wind turbines in industrial zones. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a zoning amendment that will require special-use permits before the turbines may be built. The amendment was spurred by a business owner who wanted to put up a turbine to power his facility. Tim Williams with Buffalo Air Services told the board that safety was a concern for him as a pilot, so he asked supervisors to mandate special markings for the turbine towers. The turbine planned by Denny Jorgensen will have a red light on the top. Before approving his permit, the board recommended he use a stripe pattern with alternating colors on the base tower to improve its visibility. Source: NATA Voice

aeromedical advisory

Sneezes and zzzzs As winter’s grip on most of the country slowly loosens, the countryside comes back to life. While most people regard the warming weather as nothing but good news, not everyone is so cheery. For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, the annual spring rejuvenation can be a very unpleasant time. To cope with the sneezing and congestion, many allergy sufferers turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medications like Benadryl®, Allergia-C®, and other common

allergy remedies. Though effective, these medications are not without side effects. In fact, the active ingredient in most of these medications is the same: Diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is a great medication that can be used not only for allergies, but also to treat cold, cough, and even motion sickness.

It can even be used to treat allergies in your dog (but check first with your vet for dosing and instructions). But it also has a function that can be especially troubling for those of us in aviation: it acts as a sedative. More on that in a moment.

The cure can be worse? In weighing the use of any medication, you always have to consider whether the cure is worse than the symptoms. Because many, if not all, medications have side effects, it is important to consider those side effects in your

decision to take a medication, especially an OTC medication where a doctor and pharmacist are not involved in the decision. In the case of diphenhydramine, side effects can include dry mouth, nose, and throat; drowsiness; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; loss of appetite; headache; muscle weakness; and nervousness. While it’s unlikely you will experience all of these side effects, even one or two can have a negative effect on your ability to fly safely. So if you find yourself in a situation where you feel the need to take an allergy medication, you need to seriously consider whether you should be flying at all. Remember that it is your responsibility as pilot in command to ensure that you meet all applicable medical standards before any flight. No one expects you to be as skilled as an aviation medical examiner in determining your exact medical status, but you know your body. Just as with any flight, the FAA expects you to be honest with yourself when it comes to assessing whether you are fit to operate an aircraft as pilot in command.

Would you fly on sleeping pills? Now back to diphenhydramine. The side effects are certainly a potential issue, but that’s not all. In addition to being used in OTC allergy medications, diphenhydramine is an active ingredient in a number of sleep aid medications. These include Unisom®, Sominex®, and Nytol®. It is also a key ingredient in most, if not all, labeled medications with the “PM” notation,

• Easy to Use • Complete Program • Superior Customer Service • Strengthen Customer Loyalty • Meet the Needs of Your Pilots • Maximize Your Business Opportunities • Make the Most of Your Guidance Systems

(800) 890-6945

such as Excedrin PM® or Advil PM®. Most people probably wouldn’t be aware that OTC medication taken for allergies is also widely used as a sedative. Another problem with diphenhydramine is that some people are not aware of its side effects. Individuals who have taken diphenhydramine often subjectively report that they feel “perfectly fine.” However, performance tests show that these same people were just as incapacitated as others who were legally intoxicated from alcohol. Needless to say, this knowledge should lead you to the conclusion that it is not a good idea for you to perform flight crew duties while taking these medications. This discussion also highlights the larger issue for pilots: Our standards must be higher. We have to take a much greater interest in our medications, whether OTC or prescription, for how they could affect piloting A better way to communicate ability. If you’re not sure, with your customers and manage your business so you can focus ask your AME. Better still, on spraying more acres. when in doubt, sit it out. Remember that flying is supposed to be fun … and you’ll have a much better, and much safer, flight when you are fit and free of potentially harmful medications.

When buying an Air Tractor on the West Coast... by Bill Lavender An ag-aviation maintenance shop doesn’t start its life thinking one day it will hold the coveted title of Air Tractor dealer, or even a service center. Sometimes, it just happens. In 1995, when Grouleff Aviation dropped its Air Tractor dealership, Valley Air Crafts was in a good position to become an Air Tractor service center. Its owner, Mike Schoenau, had opened Valley Air Crafts on the Tulare, California municipal airport in 1983 and had a long and successful history of working on agricultural aircraft. Mike Schoenau has always been in aviation, particularly ag-aviation. After graduating from Reedley College’s A&P

school in Reedley, California, in 1977, Mike went to work for Ray Poole Dusters in Madera, California repairing N3Ns, Stearmans and even a BT13 configured for ag-spraying and dusting. Later, Mike found himself at Spain Air working on Bill Spain’s Stearmans. Then, finally, he worked at Johnston Aircraft Service in Tulare for three years where he rounded out his ag-aviation experience working on Pawnee Braves and Thrush, along with any other type of aircraft that passed through the Johnston Aircraft Service shop. When Valley Air Crafts became an Air Tractor service center, at the same time West Coast Ag became an Air Tractor parts dealer. In 2005, when

West Coast Ag closed its doors, it was a natural transition for Valley Air Crafts to absorb the parts sales and in the process become an Air Tractor dealer. The company provides a full range of service and parts sales, along with new and used aircraft reaching from Tulare throughout California and into Nevada and Arizona. Valley Air Crafts annuals about 20 Air Tractors and a dozen or so Thrush each year. It also has a thriving General Aviation business that makes up about half the work at Valley Air Crafts. “I like having the diversification of general aviation aircraft in my shop,” tells Mike. “However, I make it very

Air Repair of Mississippi provided an elaborate dispersal system for the aircraft, including; the Load Hawg system with its hydraulic hopper door and auger, hydraulics manufactured by Kawak that operate the flaps, gate, boom valve and Transland interface system. Air Repair’s AccuRate interface box “marries” everything together. The Trimble GPS communicates with the Transland and AccuRate interfaces. Additionally, the aircraft has an STC’d side fuel loader manufactured by Turbine Conversions of Michigan. The engine is monitored by Electronics International’s MPV50T. Valley Air Crafts obtained the first field approval of the MPV-50T in an Air Tractor. This approval was used by Air Tractor for the PMA approval of MPV-50Ts in all turbine powered Air Tractors.

Pesticide residue risks recalculated For the past 15 years, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has been trying to scare U.S. consumers about pesticide residues on the fruits and vegetables in supermarkets. The EWG annually selects a “dirty dozen” produce items that they say pose the most pesticide residue danger to consumers and their kids. Now, however, two courageous researchers at the University of California/Davis say they’ve also tested the fruits and

vegetables—and found the pesticide residues on these produce items are essentially a million times below the “No Effect” levels found in the animal toxicity tests. That’s how much safety factor is built into the government’s reference doses and Acceptable Daily Intake recommendations. The EWG says consumers can lower their pesticide consumption by nearly four-fifths by buying expensive organic produce. Drs. Carl Winter and Josh Katz say the

EWG methods don’t even measure consumer exposure against the Acceptable Daily Intake. Such findings “suggest that the potential consumer risks are negligible and cast doubts as to how consumers avoiding conventional forms of fresh produce are improving their health status.” The most potent risk that Winter and Katz found in the “Dirty Dozen” was an exposure only 50 times lower than the Reference Dose for methamidophos — but that reference dose includes a 1,000–fold uncertainty factor for extrapolating the results of the most sensitive animal studies. For three commodities—blueberries, cherries, and kale—the Reference Doses were more than 30,000 times higher than the exposure estimates for all of the ten most frequently detected pesticides on those commodities.

Nor did the research team find much merit in the obvious EWG efforts to target commodities that showed traces of several pesticides. “Such effects still require exposure . . . to be at a level of high enough risk to cause a biological effect. Results from this study strongly suggest that consumer exposure to the ten most common pesticides found on the “Dirty Dozen” produce items are several orders of magnitude below levels required to cause a biological effect in any test animals.” Thus the likelihood of the various residues “synergizing” into high risks is also negligible. The research team seems to think the multiple-

This study says “buying organic” won’t much reduce your risks of getting cancer. In fact, Dr. Bruce Ames, also of the University of California/Berkeley, who received the National Medal of Science from President Clinton, says 99.9 percent of the carcinogens we swallow are natural compounds produced naturally by our fruits and vegetables to help protect them as they grow. Ames says “going organic” will reduce your exposure to carcinogens by about one tenthousandth of one percent. More to the point, Dr. Ames says the human body shrugs off life’s minor insults, such as the tiny amount of carcinogenic psoralens in your celery stalk. And be aware that organic produce also contains those same natural pesticides.

Why does your newspaper not tell you about studies like these? Ask them. Dennis T. Avery, a senior fellow for the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., is an environmental economist. If you are still worried, stomach cancer seems not to be triggered by ingesting pesticide residue, but by a stomach bacteria (helicobacter pylori) infection. This is why stomach cancer

I maintained five Ag Cats while in high school. I grew up with it. Didn’t have much money to go to an ag school. I started out in a J-3 Cub at the bottom, so it was up from there. I had the chance to fly a number of different ag planes till 79. At that time I transitioned to a turbine Thrush, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Flying Tigers and although I was already a practicing ag pilot when I started school, I learned a lot for the short time I spent there. Man said.... “take that machine and

go play with it.” I did. A few months later I realized that ‘crop-dusters’ tend to lie, or they just did not know what they were speaking of. Waste of money, and you should remove the Wall Street Journal article from your web-site, its misleading

is ridiculous! Graduates interviewed are mostly unhappy with the experience and don’t recommend it. Most importantly, maybe, is that there’s no job placement afterward - you’re on your own and you’re unlikely to be hired, according to those same graduates interviewed. In my opinion, AAU’s pro-agpilot school bent is strictly due to advertising revenue, and AAU’s hostile toward those opposed to the ag pilot school. Associates Degree in Agricultural Aviation (1989) University of Minnesota-Crookston Learned from my father and growing up around it. It was a family business and like most pilots of the time I was trained by my father. I was shown how to start the turbine and given operation instructions and left on my own. Wanted to spray since second grade and just pursued it after high school. Fortunately got associated with a great operator and started with him 35 years ago. Mentored by an operator. I have noticed that the sharpest ag pilots have generally had the most training. They are generally those that have advanced the most in their career. I was mentored into the industry in a very structured program which involved almost two full seasons on the ground as a mixer/loader and then another full year of dual ag followed by a closely supervised solo year. Mentored with an established operator I started 40 years ago. Ag schools are good but you need to start on the ground first and learn the business.

in my opinion

Rewards Recently, I had a young man go through my turbine transition course. He did not have any previous ag flying experience other than the fact that he had attended another ag aviation flight school. He did have around 300 hours in a 450 Ag Cat doing skywriting. This young man genuinely did have “the touch.” He had a natural ability to “feel” what the airplane was doing. Initially, he did not keep the airplane in balanced, coordinated flight rolling

into and out of turns, but with a little practice and persistence this situation disappeared entirely. He did have one other little pique; when beginning his primary turn following a pull-up leaving the field, he rolled the airplane a little too fast to suit me. After our first low-level flight, during our debrief, I explained

that ag pilots should concentrate on always flying his airplane in smooth, balanced, coordinated flight all the time. One exception, of course, was landing a tailwheel airplane in a crosswind. By following these flight characteristics, you can still turn the airplane in a significant degree of bank and never even get close to a stall. Furthermore, you do not have to abruptly enter the turn. Every time you abruptly or semi-violently make a control movement, either with the elevator, ailerons or rudder, you are

If you will always fly your airplane in smooth, balanced, coordinated flight there are three major rewards for flying your airplane like that: you will be safer, more efficient and will be far less fatigued at the end of a ninehour day. In-My-Opinion, there is still another reward for flying in smooth, balanced, coordinated flight: unnecessary g-loads on an airplane are cumulative and greatly reduce the lifespan of the airframe. If you take a wire coat hanger and bend it back and forth, you know eventually the coat hanger will break. That is exactly the same thing that happens to your airplane. You can actually turn your airplane around faster and, of course, much safer if you smoothly roll into a climbing arcturn with the balance ball centered rather than hauling back on the stick in a staggering, near stalling, 2-3 G flat turn. The bottom line is you will make more money at the end of the day and your prospects of dying of old age are a lot better; plus your airplane will be a lot happier! And so…be safe, have fun, and make money and be nice to your airplane.

The pilot landed after completing an aerial application to a field, and planned on refueling the airplane while the application tank was reloaded. He noted that among other distractions, he was having problems with his GPS, and began discussing it with another pilot. The pilot reported that after takeoff, he realized that he did not have the ground crew refuel the airplane. The destination field was close, so he decided to continue rather than return and fuel the airplane. The fuel gages indicated 1/4 capacity at takeoff and were bouncing around 1/8 capacity after he completed two passes. The engine subsequently lost power due to fuel exhaustion and the pilot landed in a flat field. During the landing roll, the airplane nosed over, substantially damaging the vertical stabilizer and rudder. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Prior to performing the aerial application flight, the pilot of the helicopter surveyed the field, and observed a set of power lines along the eastern border. He completed the application uneventfully, and while completing the final pass towards the east, the helicopter struck the power lines. He reported that he did not see the lines silhouetted against the grey sky until just prior to the collision, and that he performed an evasive maneuver in an attempt to descend below the lines. The helicopter struck the ground after the collision, nosed over, and rolled onto its right side, sustaining substantial damage to the fuselage and main rotor system. This was the pilot’s second revenue flight, having recently been hired as an apprentice. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.

On April 25, 2012, about 1052 central daylight time, a Thrush Aircraft Inc. S2R-H80 descended and impacted terrain near Bryan, Texas. The pilot was trying to retrieve a dropped item in the cockpit when the airplane began the descent. The certificated commercial pilot was uninjured. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and wings. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan had not been filed for the local flight that originated from Coulter Field Airport (CFD), Bryan, Texas.

Use caution, avoid loss of power, engine failure or mechanical failures

Pilots report loss of power or engine failure in approximately 30% of recent aerial application accidents. Other mechanical failures were noted in 11% of the accident rate. Don’t become a statistic! • Verify fuel quantity before every flight. Do not guess! Do not take off unless you know you have enough fuel for the application. • Manage fuel while flying. Do not allow an uncoordinated turn to move fuel away from the engine supply inlet. Pay attention to low-level warning lights. Use a wristwatch. Have a fuel time limit for every flight. • Prevent the use of contaminated

fuel. Know your fuel source and check samples daily. Use preventive maintenance to prevent problems when you are flying. Replace defective or worn-out components before they fail. Use approved parts from a reliable source when maintaining your aircraft. Conduct a thorough preflight and post-flight inspection. Clan the aircraft regularly. Pay attention to turbine engines. Be aware of loose P3 lines, blocked filters and fuel line problems, which can cause engine failures. Periodically inspect, lubricate and adjust engine controls.

• Conscientiously check for cracks in cylinders on radial engines. • Stop flying when an engine or airframe develops indications of a potential problem • Use an FAA-certified mechanic to fix mechanical problems. • Provide training, tools, parts and time for mechanics to properly maintain aircraft. • Make sure seatbelts, helmets and safety equipment are used and in working order. • Give modern agricultural aircraft the respect it deserves as a high-dollar machine; it is essential to the success of an application business.

Pilot safety –

Power Line Warning by Fred Ramirez Pilots in the field of aerial application are exposed to many hazards when doing their work in the air. A survey from Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries shows that agricultural pilots are at higher risk for fatal injuries compared with pilots in all other industries. Every year, numerous seminars and training opportunities are made available to ag pilots. These sessions, provided by agriculture aerial associations, help to develop an awareness of obstacles and improve skills needed to avoid aerial accidents. After my presentation about the Obstacle Warning feature for the Ag-NavTM GuiaTM system at a convention in Florida in 2011, I received several comments from individuals who were concerned about pilot safety. Most of the comments I received from pilots around the world, were to encourage us not stop at the obstacle warning feature and continue to extend it to a power line warning system, as well. Below is an example of an Australian e-mail that I received:

forget them and this is to have a way of pushing them back into the short term memory just before you get to them. Thanks, David

Many features in the Ag-NavTM navigation systems have come from requests from pilots. The Power Line Warning in the Ag-NavTM GuiaTM system was developed because of the previous emails.

Obviously power lines are a direct threat to pilots. The poles may be easy to see, but the wires are virtually impossible to identify under certain conditions. Failure to see and avoid obstacles is one of the top ten reasons for aerial accidents.

I asked David to send me a sample of power line data. He sent me a KML file that has data of power lines in several regions in Australia. In my mind, a line should have only two points, but in reality they look like Figure 1.

“We just hit another wire today. $100k cost to us. Classic “forgot the wire”. If we can get ObstLine in the system it would extremely valuable to us. “ Even though no life had been lost, the bad news was serious enough. What can we do to help pilots?

Google EarthTM took half a minute for my computer to load all data. Three weeks later, I sent the software update to David and asked him to test it. David made a test flight right away. I think he was as excited as I was to see how it would work. The next day, I found his email saying, “The unit tested very well, the warning is good”. He gave me some

From: David Black Sent: January-24-12 1:07 AM To: Fred Ramirez Subject: ObstPnt Hi Fred, I am just reading the manual to get a bit familiar with the system. We have Google Earth overlays of all the power lines in the areas we operate. How can we get this info onto the system so it becomes a ObstPnt? Power line strikes are a major issue at the moment. There have been about 12 strikes in the last couple of months. We have had one ourself. Speaking from experience, there is only one way to not

to generate a power line file *.kml. You can also fly to the field and mark the power lines manually. Make sure you have the three functions below in the Control Menu: • <NewPwrLn> to start and record the first point of a new power line. • <PwrLine> to enter the next point of the power line. • <DelPwrLn> to delete the last entered point if you happen to enter the point by mistake. The power lines you generated are saved in the agnav.pwr file. You can copy this file to other GuiaTM systems to share the data.

Figure 2: Power lines in Tottenham, Australia feedback to improve the feature. It’s not practical to have too many power lines in one file, so I asked David to make smaller files. The results were much better and easier to work in realtime.

For Ag-NavTM users, the new feature of Power Line Warning is in the GuiaTM software version 1.7.6. You can download the new software update for free from the Ag-NavTM website (www. agnav.com). You can use Google EarthTM

with all power lines and obstacles. When you are approaching a power line within a predefined warning time, the light bar display will be flashing. On screen a warning message “Power Line” will be shown. The hazard line will be plotted thick. When you see the warning, check around and take a quick look on the screen. The power line you’re approaching might be hard to see outside the aircraft but is easy to see on-screen. The warning continues until you’re flying away from the hazard. Make sure you give yourself enough time to check and maneuver the aircraft to avoid the hazard. You do this by setting the “Obstacle Alert Time” high enough. Is there any case in which you fly close to a power line and are still safe? Yes, it’s when you fly parallel to a power line. You won’t hit the power line, but be careful. Too close is dangerous. In this case you can define a safe distance called “Minimum Warning Distance” in GuiaTM. If you fly close to a power line within this minimum distance, a warning will be shown. Important notes: This feature is designed to enhance pilot safety by improving the awareness of obstacles. Due to known and unknown sources of errors, the warning may be late or missing. At all times, pilots must be aware of all obstacles, power lines and hazards inside and around the spray areas.

In the GuiaTM, it looks like this.

The spray season has already begun for another year. Watch the power lines and fly safely. We rely on your skills.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on centerpivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. TFN
