from the cockpit
Thirty years and counting Last month, an old crop duster friend stopped by the office for a visit. Unfortunately, I was out of town. Charlie Foster and I go back to 1974 when he was flying a Stearman in the next county, and I was in my first season flying a 235 Hutch-wing, metalized Pawnee. The purpose of Charlie’s the visit was to give me four old “AgAir Updates” he had found. Until his visit, I had always thought I became editor of AgAir Update in 1988. His gift exposed my poor memory (hey, it was well over 25 years ago). Of the four editions, the September 1981, Volume 1, Number 2, was the oldest. There was no masthead to determine who was the editor of the 10-page newsletter, unless you call the author of the “President’s Swath”, Dave McDaniel, the editor and assume the GAAA was the publisher. I guess it would be proper to believe, AgAir Update’s roots started in 1981, 30 years ago. Heck, I was about to miss celebrating AgAir Update’s 30th year! The next oldest edition was the March/ April 1982, Vol. 2, No. 1. My guess is in 1982 the publication changed from biannual to quarterly editions. The publication still did not have a masthead, but now its editor was Donna McDaniel (Dave’s wife). The third edition was dated February
1986, Vol. 5, No. 4. How did that happen? The publication still claims to be a quarterly, but my math says it should have been Vol. 6, No. 1. I suppose there was a missing edition in 1985. Maybe that was when the transition to me becoming the editor. That means I have been punching away at this keyboard for 25 years. Well, not quite, since I couldn’t type at the time! Looking through those four old 1980s editions of AgAir Update brought back many memories. A number of the faces in the pictures have flown west, while many others are no longer in the business. Even more remarkable are the advertisers supporting the publication then that still do today: Gregory Flying Service (now Airforce Turbine Service), Souther Field Aviation, Covington Aircraft Engines, Micronair Sales and Service (now Micron Sprayers), AirSouth Insurance, MId-Continent Aircraft Sales
and Service, Southeastern Aircraft Sales and Service, Stainless Steel Spray Systems and Tulsa Aircraft Engines. These companies have been with AgAir Update every edition printed since, for over 25 years. I am grateful of the support from those first advertisers. There would be many more to come. By April 1986, the publication was 20 pages. In 1990, after being the editor of AgAir Update as a publication of the GAAA for about four years, I made a proposal to purchase it from the Association. In May 2011, AgAir Update, including all printed editions, was 208 pages. From the borders of Georgia, Alabama and Florida, AgAir Update has See Editorial page 7 agairupdate.com Volume 29, Number 7 July 2011

agair mail photo A couple of issues back (or maybe more) there was a picture of three Neptune Air Tankers. It appears to be a picture that I took on the Forest Service Ramp at Alamagrodo in ‘88. happen to know who might have one for sale? Best regards, Mauricio Pinzon Bogota, Colombia Hola Mauricio; All is good here, no problems. I trust the same is with you. Do you realize that this month, 19 years ago, I visited you? My goodness, how time flies. As for the a/c for sale, all that I know of are listed in our classified section on our web site, agairupdate. com. Anyone wanting to sell, places their aircraft there. The used aircraft market for good aircraft is very tight, if you do find one, it may be in bad condition or very expensive. Good luck with your search. And, please stay in touch! —Bill

My name is Tyson Lukasavige and I’m an aerial applicator with an operator in Nebraska. I recently attended the turbine transition course with Robert at Flying Tigers and tried to break your record of “least amount of altitude lost in a 360 degree turn.” However, I was unsuccessful in my endeavor. I have recently become an avid reader of AgAir Update and enjoy the articles and time you put into the magazine. On that note, I would really like to read an article about organic foods and
the myths behind them. I have been doing some research and find it very interesting what an “Organic Farmer” is allowed to apply to their crops. Also, I have found it interesting that an organic crop needs to be sprayed up to seven times for it to have the same effect as it’s synthetically sprayed counterpart that has one or two applications. I am interested in this topic and believe more light should be shed upon it because I reside in Colorado in the off season (front range and westward) and I can’t count how many times I have told someone what I do as a career and their response is “why do you want to kill people?” Now, you do have to take into account this is Colorado and people are a bit different here but I would like these people who believe so strongly in their organic food to know the truth and also other aerial applicators to understand the
differences. I was very surprised in the research I had done to find some organic pesticides are more harmful than their synthetic counterpart. Also, it was surprising to find Americans eat about 1,500 mg of natural pesticides per person per day, which is about 10,000 times more than the 0.09 mg they consume of synthetic pesticide residues. So, if you ever need some material I would love to see this topic out in the open so people understand it a bit better (I was pretty confused by it so that’s what prompted a bit of digging). Anyways, I hope all is well and continue with all the great work you do for agricultural aviation. Keep On Keeping On, Tyson Lukasavige Colorado Morning Tyson; Thanks for your patience in my delayed reply. You are running with a rough

editorial from page 4A grown to be read worldwide in three languages; English, Portuguese and Spanish. For me, the “ride” has been a good one and I intend to continue until I no longer can. As publisher/editor in the 1990s, with AgAir Update expanding to meet the needs of agricultural aviation, I could no longer focus on ag-flying and eventually retired from flying for hire in 2000, after 27 years. It was a easy/hard decision. At first, I missed those early morning spray jobs, or finishing up the ends after a long, satisfying day with many acres having passed under the wings. Today, I can only imagine how hard a long day in the cockpit can be for a pilot in his
late 50s, early 60s and older. I believe the way it is done is with pacing and many, many years of experience to lean on. You don’t see older pilots making high-G turns, overloaded takeoffs and pushing the envelope. Maybe there is something to the saying, “There are bold pilots and old pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots”. Did I get that right? Until next month, Blue Sky and Tailwinds...

crowd when you “hang” with Robert! (joke) You didn’t have a chance with the altitude loss record. I had you at a disadvantage with over 20 years in the turbine Thrush. If I’d have been more current, I’d have beat myself. Actually, it was a fluke. I got lucky. I appreciate your kind comments about AgAir Update. It is a labor of love; sure would hate to have a real job. As for the organic BS, search our “Spreading the Facts” at agairupdate.com. There are so many angles about organic farming, it can be overwhelming. I believe the most important fact is: Nobody has ever died from eating food sprayed by an aerial applicator. Many misguided people have died eating organic food, thinking it was more healthy for some reason (ignorance is bliss). I am sure you will be able to pick out some talking points and data from “Spreading the Facts”. —Bill

deployment I just wanted to say thanks for providing me with several back issues of AAU prior to my deployment in March in support of Operation Odessy Dawn/Unified Protector. I’ve been a subscriber of AAU for several months now and enjoy reading/learning about the ag aviation industry. Since I’ve subscribed to AAU and joined NAAA, I’ve met several pilots who shared with me their experiences and has offered me helpful advice about the industry and for that I’m greatly appreciative. I am looking forward to ending this chapter in my life in a couple of years and opening up a new chapter in this industry. Thanks again and fly safe! Herb Maraman Tifton, GA

a “work around”. You might get away with it for awhile; except, not only will you have to “fool” the FAA (you’ll need a U.S. Commercial Pilot’s License), the state department of agriculture for the state where you work (you’ll need a pesticide license) and of course that state’s Worker’s Compensation and then our friend the U.S. IRS. I can assure you that one, if not all, of these agencies will see through your farce and the burden of proof otherwise will fall upon you and the operator. Besides, an operator would be foolish to attempt what you suggest. Why not do things the right way? There is a good reason for each requirement. While you are attending ag-school, you could comply with the other requirements.—Bill
breaking in Hello my name is Skylar Stevenson. I am currently a commercial-rated helicopter pilot with an instrument rating working on my CFI at Silverhawk Aviation Academy in Idaho. I am interested in ag flying, once I attain 1000 hours PIC. I understand it is very difficult to break into the ag spraying industry.
Could you lend me any advice or information on how to better myself professionally to eventually get into the business? I have my Class A CDL, and a Bachelors of Science Degree from Idaho State University. I also come from a farming family in southern Idaho and have been around farms all my life. I am a hard working and smart guy who wants to succeed in the aviation industry. Any advice you have to offer will be greatly appreciated. Skylar Stevenson Idaho Hello Skylar; You are correct in that breaking into the ag flying business is difficult. It appears you are on the right track, building hours and a good agricultural background. Assuming you are wanting to fly ag in a helicopter, I don’t know of a helicopter ag-school. I’m sure there are plenty of helicopter schools that will claim they can teach you to fly ag, but I wouldn’t count on it. If you are going to try to fly ag in a fixed wing, then I suggest you contact Flying Tiger Aviation in Louisiana. You will never get too much education in the ag-av business. Another option is networking by
joining associations like the IdAAA, PNWAAA and NAAA. AgAir Update also offers a Ag-Pilot WannaBe package provides a subscription to AAU and will send you contact info and a DVD about the industry. You can purchase it from our web site: www.agairupdate. com.—Bill
wannabe Hello, I am currently doing research on becoming an ag pilot. I am currently working on my Private License while working full time here in Gillette, WY. First of all, I want to say that I really enjoy AgAir Update. It has been very informative. Recently, I have had the opportunity to speak with some operators near me and they have also been very helpful. First, I spoke with Dean McClain, Owner of Ag Flyers, in Torrington, WY. Then I spoke with Bunker Sheppard in Wheatland, WY. I am considering taking a road trip this summer to check out Ag Flight and Flying Tigers aviation schools. My time is limited to about ten days, but I’d like to also find some operators to visit with along my trek. I would like to see a variety of different operations from owner operators to some of the bigger
outfits I have heard about. Besides visiting the two schools, I’d appreciate any contacts you could give me in the Midwest or southern portions of the United States. As always, I look forward to next month’s issue! Chris Bonter Gillette, WY Dear Chris; Good luck with your research to become an ag-pilot and thanks for your compliments. Wicked weather
by Bill Lavender The power of Mother Nature seems to have come together this spring. Besides the tragedy of the multiple deaths and seemingly endless destruction, ag operators have been spared direct blows without significant loss of property and no loss of life. However, the impact to most operators along the Mississippi River borders from Missouri to Louisiana has been substantial. A devastating combination of drought, tornadoes and flooding have reduced farming acres suitable for spraying by more than 50% for many operators in mid-America to the Gulf of Mexico following the Mississippi River. AgAir Update contacted key individuals on this route of destruction to learn firsthand the effects. Sandy Wells Executive Secretary / OkAAA “Bill, I checked on operators that lived in the El Reno, Oklahoma area or had businesses located nearby. Rick and Tanner Escott (OkAAA September 2011 Fly-In Hosts) said the tornadoes that plowed through Oklahoma came very close to their operation, but they were okay. He also said nearby Helena Chemical Company made it through safely. It appears the a tornado passed
10A
agairupdate.com
between them. Rick said he would definitely be installing a storm shelter for his family. I also checked on a few others - Junior Regier, Terry Thomson and J&C Enterprise. They are all okay.” Dennie Stokes Stokes Flying Service Parkin / Earle, Arkansas “We are all okay, but Stokes Flying Service has lost somewhere between 3,500 to over 4,000 acres of rice acreage to spray this year. I estimate a reduction of more than 50% in rice acreage. We have passed the planting date (first of June), so those acres will be planted in soybeans. Our farmers are way behind, even on high ground, due to so much rainfall. Hard rains have come through weekly, delaying their planting. We are positioned between the Mississippi River and the St. Francis River. Although the rivers never flooded their banks, the St. Francis floodway held the waters. In doing so, however, this created flooding on thousands of fertile rice land. Also, the rains took their toll on one of the best looking wheat crops I’ve seen. Our cotton acres will be 50% or less, due to wet fields. Some operators are worse off than us, while others are almost up to normal. Southeast Arkansas has been very dry, almost to the point of
barely enough rain to plant. Although, I hear they are cutting 80 bushel per acre wheat, compared to 50-60 bushel average yields. We were very fortunate to have missed the tornadoes. One passed to the south of us, but didn’t cause any damage. I’ve not heard of any lost aircraft or hangars, but several load pads were damaged.” Mike Lee Earl’s Flying Service Steele, Missouri Mike Lee operates at the north edge of the boot hill of Missouri. Although he avoided the tornadoes, his area was flooded by excessive rainfall, not rivers breaching their banks. Like Dennie Stokes, he had not heard of any loss of aircraft or hangars from the tornadoes that ripped through Missouri. However, his customers are feeling the effects of more than nine inches of rainfall in May. His farmers planted 24-48 hours non-stop before they got rained out and this has delayed planting and replanting to where Earl’s Flying Services’ rice and cotton acreage will be off by 50% or more. In one instance, Earl’s Flying Services water-seeded (aerial planting in standing water) 3,000 acres of rice, only to have excessive rains stack 10 feet of water on top of it. When it drained, it
pulled up rice plants by their roots. Now, it is too late to plant rice. If the fields will dry off, soybeans will replace the rice. It’s the same story for Missouri boot hill cotton acreage, too late to replant. More soybeans will be planted to replace the cotton. Unfortunately, soybeans planted around Steele, Missouri do not need much, if any, aerial spraying. North of MIke and out of his spraying area, Birds Point was purposely flooded by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, over 130,000 acres. This was fertile farmland already planted in rice. Mike operates one AT-802. Normally, he will get behind during rice season, so he calls in nearby Scott Rainey in western Tennessee, who does not have rice work. That may not happen this year. Bradley Reed Reed Aviation / Iota, Louisiana Although many operators were adversely affected along the Louisiana side of the Mississippi River Delta, south of the Morganza Spillway, similar to operators in Arkansas and Missouri, Reed Aviation’s problems are completely different. Bradley Reed, owner/operator, is facing drought conditions and the effects of Clearfield rice. Ironically, Bradley’s fellow Louisiana operators closer to the Delta are in drought
conditions for flooded farmland. Clearfield rice is a genetically modified rice that farmers started planting about 10 years ago in Louisiana. Unlike traditional rice varieties, Clearfield is farmed differently. Because it does not require flooding to control weeds, like weedy red rice, aerial applications have been reduced from 7-8 to four or less. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, in 2006 Bradley bought a couple of nearby operations, expanding his acreage to offset the effects of the Clearfield plantings. It took ten years for farmers to transition to this type of farming rice, especially the old timers, when they did it was all at once. Instead of flying from “can to can’t” in May, he’s in his office wondering what he could be doing. “I’ve prepared somewhat for the effect of Clearfield rice on my business. It really is not so bad being not as busy in May as we were in the past. Maybe I can take up some golf...”, Bradley jokes. Along with Clearfield rice, crawfish are taking their toll on Reed Aviation’s rice work. With rice only bringing $18 per hundredweight and input costs at $22 per hundredweight, many growers are looking for ways to offset the loss by farming crawfish in the rice fields. Crawfish typically don’t require Reed Aviation’s services. Doug Davidson Davidson Solid Rock Insurance Clinton, Arkansas “All of my ag customers avoided having any losses resulting in insurance claims. However, that cannot be said for my general aviation accounts. Many of them had extensive damage.” Paul Artman Gary Flying Service Inverness, Mississippi “We have been very lucky as far as the weather is concerned. We are now in a drought and wishing for a rain. Knowing a rain could cause a levee to break and flood, we don’t wish too hard. It’s a Catch 22 situation. We need the rain, but we don’t want others to suffer from a broken or breached levee.”
and, wildfires too Wildfires have scorched over 3.5 million acres, not counting the ones raging in Arizona. This represent triple the average and the most acres burnt in over a decade. In Arizona, in early June hundreds of square miles have been burnt with numerous homes and building.
From Arizona to Georgia, drought conditions persist; 94% of New Mexico and 96% of Texas are in drought conditions.

why? Weather experts searching for an explanation of this year’s weather claim the La Niña climate pattern is the reason. A recorded breaking La Niña, born in the Pacific Ocean from coolerthan-normal sea surface temperatures, in combination with altered jet stream flow set the stage for extreme weather. According to meteorologist Steve Bowen, as of late May the U.S. has seen eight separate billion-dollar events this year. In 2008, there were nine. He says the Mississippi Valley flooding has been a $5 billion disaster, while the tornado in Joplin, Missouri may end up being on of the costliest single tornadoes ever recorded (Source: USA Today). So far in 2011, 525 people have been killed, as a result of an estimated 1,438 spotted tornadoes. The average for this time of year is 823. If there is one bright spot amongst the havoc brought by Mother Nature, it is the elevated commodity prices. On June 10, corn hit an all-time high of $8.48. Soybeans prices are sky-high at $14.68. When commodity prices are high, farmers tend to spend more money protecting and enhancing the yields of their crops. Invariably, this means more acres will be flown over by ag-aircraft.

AAU Argentina excursion by Bill Lavender In last month’s excursion article, Walt Jazun (AgAir Update South American rep) and I completed our third and fourth visit of this eight-stop journey. In this article, we are now into our fourth day, Wednesday, and have checked out of the hotel in Rosario, headed west for our first stop of the day. Zarantonello Servicio Aereos is a familyowned and operated flying service working off a sod strip, “El Gaucho”, near Las Parejas, about 100 km west of Rosario. Owner, pilot, husband and father, Daniel Zarantonello flies the company’s AT502, while his wife Ilse and two daughters, Celina and Virginia, arrange the scheduling and accounting. Zarantonello Servicio Aereos operates within an 80-km radius of El Gaucho that includes approximately a million hectares (2.47 million acres) of farmland. The company has about 200 customers, which is more than the typical Argentine ag-operator. This is due to the small size of the farms. Forty-two years ago, Daniel started flying ag in a high-wing British-built Auster. Three of the four seats were removed to
Aluminum Strainer
accommodate a 90-gallon hopper to spray insecticides on flax. In 1972, after surviving a year in the Auster, he traded it for a Piper PA-18A Super Cub and formed Zarantonello Servicio Aereos. At this time, soybeans were just getting their start in a big way in Argentina. A chemical company provided most of the work, which was spraying herbicides on the soybeans. Zarantonllo Servicios Aereos grew and Daniel added a C-180 to his aircraft fleet. In 1977, he traveled to the U.S. to buy a new Cessna 188 Ag Truck. After Fabrica Militar de Aviones started building C-188s under license with Cessna in Argentina (FMA built 33-34 A188Bs between the years 19721975), Daniel bought a new one. With a decade of operating Cessna 188 ag-planes, Daniel traveled to the U.S. to visit the Air Tractor factory in Olney, Texas. He was very interested in the AT400 with its PT6A engine. Jet A was one-third the cost of av-gas. Moving up from a piston to a turbine ag-plane was every ag-operator’s dream. The difference in the cost of fuel made this feasible. After giving much thought to going turbine, he bought the Polish-built Turbo Kruk with a PT6A engine
instead. He operated the Kruk for five years. Daniel’s desire to own and fly an Air Tractor never left him. In 1998, he bought a new AT402 with the PT6A-11AG engine. He had ferried other ag-aircraft for others from the U.S. to Argentina. It was only natural that he ferry the AT402 to Argentina, as it would expedite the delivery. The urgency to buy and take delivery of the AT402 had been heightened, Argentina was about to implement a 10.5% VAT on imported ag-aircraft.
With nearly forty years of steady growth, Zarantonello Servicio Aereos replaced the AT402 with a new AT502 from Ag Sur, the
The Zarantonello family, (L-R) Celina, Ilse, Daniel and Virginia with Zarantonello Servicio Aereos’ AT502. A pilot is brought in the during the busy season to fly the Ag Truck.

An aerial photo o El Gaucho landing strip, base of operations for Zarantonello Servicio Aereos. Daniel Zarantonello set up operations here in 1975.
Fueling a British-built Auster in the mid-1970s. The 90-gallon hopper is in the cockpit, after having removed the three passenger seats.
Argentina Air Tractor dealer in Pergamino. The El Gaucho air strip is located in a “sea of soybeans”. Soybeans are planted in rotation with corn every third year. After the second year’s crop of soybeans, winter wheat is planted in the fall and followed by corn in the spring. Roughly, the million hectares of farmland is one-third corn and two-thirds soybeans. The 2010-2011 spray season was not as good as the season before due to a lack of rainfall. With commodity prices up, next year is expected to be good year with farmers spending more money to enhance yields for their crops. Ground machines spray herbicides until crop rows are too narrow. Aircraft mainly apply fungicides and insecticides. If the customer believes there may be an insect problem, an insecticide is added to the fungicide tank mix. Zarantonello Servicio Aereos avoids glyphosate applications during the early part of the growing season. However, late season glyphosate applications are made for weeds in crops that are Roundup Ready. Customers are just starting to experiment with applying fungicides on corn and soybeans. Daniel’s customers are seeing a yield increase with these applications. “It will be interesting to see
what happens,” muses Daniel. The AT502 is outfitted with 14 rotary atomizers spaced evenly across the boom, seven per side, stopping three-fourths of the way out from the fuselage. Most applications are 20 liters/ha (2-GPA). The AT502’s GPS is manufactured by Tiger SRL and set at a 25-meter (82 feet) swath width for most applications. Daniel uses the Ag Truck for smaller jobs and as a backup aircraft. After lunch, Walt and I drove south 180 km to Venado Tuerto where we would spend the night, as well as enjoy a special parrillada hosted by ArAvia’s Guillermo and Fernando Giordana. Evolving from a corporation formed by Luis Giordana in 1985, ArAvia opened its doors as an ag-aviation supplier of parts and services in 1993. Owned and operated by Luis Giordana, the company grew and now, along with offering ag-aviation supplies, it also offers parts and services to general aviation. Luis has semiretired, turning over the day-to-day operations to his two sons, Guillermo and Fernando. This was not the first time AgAir Update visited ArAvia. Befriending the Giordana’s in the late 1990s, the relationship has grown over the years. ArAvia has been an invaluable partner for AgAir Update in Argentina.
Luis Giordana chats about old time with AgAir Update’s Walt Jazun, who grew up in Mendoza, while Guillermo looks on. Located on Aerodrome La Siesta at the outskirts of Venado Tuerto, ArAvia has expanded its facilities by 1,000 square meters (10,763 s.f.) for a total of 2,950 square meters (31,750 s.f.). Company growth prompted the expansion. Over 2,000 new part numbers have been added in just the past year. Construction for the additional space started in September 2009 and has just now been completed. The expansion included new and separate offices for Guillermo and Fernando. This freed up space for the sales offices of which most sales are handled over the phone. The new area included a reception area that was almost complete during AgAir Update’s visit. An exotic staircase leads to the upper level offices. When asked about

this modern-looking, granite phenomenon, Guillermo explains, “We checked the cost to install an elevator. It was way too much, many thousand of dollars. So, in our infinite wisdom, we decided upon this staircase, which we like very much. However, in the end, it would have been much cheaper to have installed the elevator!” One of the attributes of ArAvia is its ability to stock thousands of aviation parts. Most of these parts come from the U.S. Because of this, it takes time and money for them to arrive and clear customs. Instead of the ag-operator having to wait on a part for their AOG airplane, in most cases, ArAvia stocks the part and can have it to the operator the same day using ArAvia’s C-210 or the next day with an overnight carrier service. This level of service requires a large warehouse and shipping area, which ArAvia now has with the new expansion. ArAvia’s offices, with their shining glass windows, are a beauty to behold. With its new expansion, ArAvia will continue to meet the demands of its many customers throughout South America. With one day left of our excursion, Walt and I retired for an early night. The next morning, Friday, we were scheduled to meet with Alejandro Moreno of Ag Sur,
the Argentina Air Tractor dealer located in Pergamino, and ArgenProps based in Buenos Aires Capital Federal, another 400 km of driving. The fourth and last part of AgAir Update’s 2011 Argentina Excursion will be in the next edition of AgAir Update.
1. From these photos of ArAvia’s newly expanded offices and warehouse, it is easy to see how important the Giordana’s believe it is to stock parts and be able to accommodate the customer. 2. The “Staircase”. The steps are made from black granite. The handrail has yet to be added in this photo. Empty five-gallon buckets prevent use. 3. The sales team’s office, room for four sales representatives to handle customers’ calls. 4. ArAvia’s offices are modern and welcoming for the customer that drives at Aerodrome La Siesta. However, many customers fly and most call by phone and have their parts shipped to them. 5. Fernando enjoys the privacy of his new office. In the past, Fernando and Guillermo shared office space with the sales team.

MET update On April 26th 2011 North Dakota’s Governor Jack Dalrymple signed into law Senate Bill 2206 regarding Anemometer/ meteorological evaluation towers (mets). Here is a summary of the bill. The marking requirements will take effect on August 1, 2011 after that date all new mets going up in North Dakota will need to be marked, as stated below. Any mets that are up before that date will have until August 1, 2014 to get marked as required. There is one exception; Mets that are currently up within the confines of an existing wind generating site will not have to be marked.
Marking: 1. All towers will be painted alternating orange and white. 2. At each anchor point for the guy wires there will be at least a 7 foot Safety sleeve. 3. One marker ball on each of the highest guy wires. Also in the bill is a requirement for the Department of Aeronautics to
establish and maintain a database of mets in North Dakota. It also requires notification of Aeronautics 10 days prior to mets going up and 10 days after one comes down. The database will be established by January 1, 2012. While SB 2206 does take a step in dealing with the issue of unmarked mets, it is not a complete fix to the issue especially in the next few years. Please be very careful as there will be a significant number of unmarked mets in North Dakota for the next few years. Wishing you all a safe season; Matt Hovdenes President-NDAAA Website below has final version of the bill: http://e-lobbyist.com/gaits/ND/2206 Website below is chronological progression of SB2206 through the legislature: http://www.legis.nd.gov/ assembly/62-2011/bill-actions/ba2206. html

been a priest for many, many years and I have never heard anyone confess the sin of greed.” Greed is one of the most reprehensible sins mentioned in the Bible and here in Colossians 3:5 Paul
says that greed is idol worship. There is lots of preaching about coming to church and giving money to support the church, but we rarely hear a sermon on the evils of greed. Probably because of the fear that rich people in the church will be offended! Greed is one of the most heinous and evil of all the sins mentioned in the Bible and we don’t like to be reminded of how greedy we really are. Self worship (pride) is the worst sin, but greed is a very close second. Pride and greed lead to all other sins. Greed is so evil that God put it in the top Ten Commandments out of over 600 laws in the Old Testament, “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21). AgAirUpdate 4.66" x 6.03 God says to have no other god’s
before Me (Exodus 34:14). When people are greedy they are worshiping worldly things more than they worship God. James says that wars and fights come from greed for money so you can spend it on your own pleasures. James then calls a person who does this adulterers and adulteresses because they worship worldly things more than they worship God—anything that has to do with greed is idolatry (read James 4:1-5). You either worship God or you worship yourself. If you worship God you say, “God, whatever pleases You, that is what I want!” When you worship yourself you say, “That is what I want.” Even if God says, “No, that is idol worship, you cannot serve God and yourself—self worship is forbidden.”

You say, “I don’t care, I want that.” Now you are bowing to the altar of self and out of this deep-seeded greed come evil desires that turn into evil thoughts, that turn into evil actions. “Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience” (Colossians 3:6). The things Paul is talking about are, “fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire and greed, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5). Now, did you notice that greed is right in there with the sins of sexual immorality? Since God rates idolatry right up there at the top of the list of sins, we have to acknowledge that God rates greed as one of the worst sins of humanity. As humans, we often overlook the destructiveness of greed. Jesus’ criticism of the Pharisees was because of their greed (Luke 11:39). Jesus turned the tables over and called the spiritual leaders a den of thieves because of their greed (Matthew 21:12-13). The modern attitude of condoning the sin of greed will not find any support from Jesus Christ—God reacts against all sinfulness. “Take heed and beware of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses”
(Luke 12:15). Every sin we ever commit comes down to self worship (pride) and greed—I want it for me! We either do what God wants us to do, or we do what we want to do. We either accept what God has given us by work, good stewardship and doing what is right; and worship God in it. Or we worship our self and what we have done. Every sin we commit goes back to one root—we have chosen ourselves over God. That is idolatry and God calls idolatry sin. Pride (self worship) and greed were the motives of Satan when he sought to overthrow God and take over God’s heaven (Isaiah 14:12-20). Greed was the reason God sent the Hebrew people into 70 years of captivity—they didn’t give their land the seventh year rest that God’s law required (Leviticus 25:4; Jeremiah 25). When greed is directed toward money or worldly things it ends up in lying, cheating, manipulation, stealing and even murder. When greed is directed toward fame and self-glory it ends up boasting, bragging and selfrighteousness. When greed is directed toward worldly and social success it ends up in selfish ambition and putting other people down to gain your selfglory. When greed is directed toward a

When greed is directed toward political power it ends up in oppression and tyranny. Greed for sex, money, power and ambition is to worship what you want—you are bowing to the idol of self. Jesus said you can’t serve God and yourself (Matthew 6:24). Greed causes people to demand their way over the rights of other people and even over God’s right to rule their life. want to be greedy and get more land, more cattle, more cars, more airplanes, more houses, more money, then go right on and get them, but remember what God says: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars— they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Did you get that? Idolaters will end up in the lake of fire with Satan and His demons. If you choose to be a greedy person you could find yourself on the receiving end of God’s wrath. The Bible never prohibits ownership of property. The eighth commandment, which says, “You shall not steal” points out that there is such a thing as personal property, or the commandment is useless. What the Bible prohibits is greed as a motive for building wealth. Greed is the reason people steal! Misrepresenting something so you can sell it for more money is greed. Trying to put you’re your competition out of business is greed. Greed has destroyed many family relationships, friendships and even nations. Greed is idol worship and God hates it.

spreading the facts
about STFs We are each aware of the need to get out the “Good” word about pesticides and aerial applications. But it appears we are preaching to the choir, ourselves! Although, much progress is being made with the school programs teaching kids about ag aviation. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the American population is urban. Therefore many probably aren’t getting our message. Most ag applicators simply do not have the time or expertise to address civic clubs and preach on-the-stump about our industry. But there is a way to make a difference. At AAU we have developed an idea that each of us can participate in with little or no effort and yet make an impact on Americans nationwide. Every newspaper is always looking for newsworthy and interesting information they can publish with minimum effort, i.e. no reporter or research costs. Submissions with reprint permission always generate interest. With the “Spreading The Facts” section in AAU, you can copy and mail, email or fax to your newspaper positive information everybody else needs to know that we already know! It will be reprinted in multiple newspapers educating the public with “Spreading The Facts” about ag aviation and pesticides. • Photocopy/cut and paste it • Mail, email or fax it to newspaper. Put newspaper’s fax number in machine’s speed dial, email address in “recipients”. • Educate the public! Reprint permission given by AgAir Update - an international agricultural aviation publication

Are climate models lying about food, too? by Dennis T. Avery Computer models at Stanford University have just “told” us that man-made global warming has already sapped some of the yield potential from our food crops. They say wheat yields would have been 5.5% higher since 1980 without the earthly warming; corn yields would have been 3.8% higher. Stanford’s computers apparently didn’t tell their programmers that U.S. corn yields have actually risen by more than 60% since 1980—during a period when they were supposedly hampered by too much heat. Wheat yields rose 14%, aided by higher levels of CO2, which act like fertilizer for plants. In fact, if you’re worried about global food production, don’t pay much attention to this study. Recall that our recent temperatures have recently been about the same as in 1980 and 1981. Net warming since 1940 is only about 0.2°C. Those are not numbers that would frighten a plant breeder, who understands that all of the wild species have proven they can handle climate changes of at least 4°C with little problem. Computer models only work if they have been programmed with adequate information. The computerized climate models, for example, claim that the earth’s recent warming is “unprecedented.” However, nobody

told the computers about the Medieval Warming (950–1200 AD) and the Roman Warming (200 BC– 600 AD), both warmer than today. Moreover, our corn, wheat and rice are all originally tropical crops: Corn originated in the hot, wet lowlands of Mexico—and didn’t get cold-tolerant enough for the Corn Belt until after 4,000 years of careful seed selection by many generations of farmers. Wheat was native to the Fertile Crescent—the hot, dry regions of Palestine and Israel. In the Punjab today, it tolerates summer temperatures as high as 100°F. Rice evolved in the Yangtze River Valley of China, where summer temperatures also rise above 100°F. But rice thrives, too, in Manchuria at summer temperatures of only 80°. Drought, not temperature, has been the real enemy of food production, around the world and over time. The big droughts have come more often during the “little ice ages” than during the predominantly good weather of the global warmings. The warmings have been the good times, for humans, crops and wildlife. Over the last 4000 years, the region of Iraq has had droughts as long as 300 years during “little ice ages.” Its cities and fields were abandoned, left
to nomadic shepherds. Egypt suffered only 8% of its Nile floods below-normal during the Medieval Warming—but 38% below-normal floods during the Little Ice Age. Closer to home, California had two century-long droughts during the Medieval Warming. Perhaps the computers should be programmed to look for shifting rain patterns and not worry about a 0.2° shift in temperature. The real food challenge? The world will need to nearly double its farm output in the next 40 short years, to meet a last, moderate increase in population—and a huge surge in affluence. The rising incomes will have everybody in the world bidding for a high-quality diet. We’ll need all the technology research can muster, including drought-resistant crops. Otherwise, food prices will soar and wildlife habitat will disappear under innumerable plows Dennis T. AOPA successfully rallies senators to protect GPS Thirty-three senators—including 13 Senate General Aviation Caucus members—have asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to rescind wireless network operator LightSquared’s approval to expand until the company can demonstrate that signals from thousands of ground stations won’t
interfere with GPS reception. On the heels of a successful legislative effort by AOPA and others, nearly a third of the U.S. Senate sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski asking him to take all necessary steps to protect GPS “from interference that could cause interruptions” from LightSquared’s
wireless network. LightSquared, under terms of a conditional waiver it received from the FCC’s International Bureau, must demonstrate through tests and analysis that its network, which would make use of more than 40,000 transmitting stations, will not interfere with GPS. The waiver has been criticized by the multi-industry Coalition to Save Our GPS and government officials as a “highly unusual” FCC action, given the “fundamentally different” nature of the network from what the commission’s integrated service rule permits. AOPA reported May 12 that Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) had appealed to their colleagues to join them in expressing concerns about interference with GPS, and that LightSquared’s testing was set to begin in mid-May in Nevada. AOPA has urged pilots flying in the vicinity of Boulder City and Las Vegas, Nev., to promptly report

any GPS signal degradation during the various test periods to the FAA and the association through the conclusion of tests May 27. “Numerous parties have raised significant concerns about interference from the LightSquared system into the Global Positioning System (GPS) frequencies,” said the May 19 letter. “These parties included the GPS industry, aviation, agriculture, construction, cellular telecommunications companies and government entities such as the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the Department of Defense, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Homeland Security. We have substantial concerns that LightSquared’s proposal places an unacceptable risk to public safety through interference with GPS receivers necessary for aviation, first responders, agriculture, construction, maritime navigation, E-911, and national defense systems.” The letter called on Genachowski to involve the full commission “in the process of making sure GPS is not compromised in any way, that the FCC require an objective demonstration of non-interference with GPS, and that the waiver for LightSquared be withdrawn until this demonstration is met.” “AOPA and our fellow aviation industry stakeholders have been working diligently to gather support in the Senate for the letter to the FCC,” said Lorraine Howerton, AOPA vice president of legislative affairs. “Almost a third of the Senate signed this letter to protect our GPS, which is significant and sends a strong message to the FCC.” In addition to Roberts and Nelson, the bipartisan group of senators who signed the letter included Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Claire McCaskill (DMo.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Scott Brown (R-Mass.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), David Vitter (R-La.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and John Thune (R-S.D.).
Proposed pesticide applicator certification plan will advance human health and environmental protection on tribal land nationwide In a May 18, 2011, Federal Register notice, EPA is announcing and soliciting comments on a proposed federal program to certify applicators of restricted use pesticides (RUPs) in Indian country where no other EPA-approved or EPA-implemented certification plan applies. RUPs are potentially hazardous chemicals that require special training and techniques to be used safely. Federal law requires EPA-approved certification of RUP applicators nationally, including in Indian country. Most of Indian country is not covered by a certification mechanism. EPA’s Proposed Federal Plan for Certification of Applicators of Restricted Use Pesticides within Indian country will help fill this gap in the
certification of applicators of these hazardous chemicals and by ensuring that RUP applicators are competent to apply RUPs in Indian country, thus providing greater protection for human health and the environment. EPA published a similar proposed federal certification plan specific to Region 8 Indian country in the Federal Register on April 20, 2011. For more information on EPA’s restricted use pesticide certification program, please see our Web pages explaining the certification and training of pesticide applicators.

Fatigue is an expected and ubiquitous aspect of life. For the average individual, fatigue presents a minor inconvenience, resolved with a nap or by stopping whatever activity that brought it on. Typically, there are no significant consequences. However, if that person is involved in safety-related activities such as operating a motor vehicle, piloting an aircraft, performing surgery, or running a nuclear reactor, the consequences of fatigue can be disastrous. Fatigue is a condition characterized by increased discomfort with lessened capacity for work, reduced efficiency of accomplishment, loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness. Two key concepts can be derived from this definition: 1. Fatigue can develop from a variety of sources. The important factor is not
what causes the fatigue but rather the negative impact fatigue has on a person’s ability to perform tasks. A long day of mental stimulation such as studying for an examination or processing data for a report can be as fatiguing as manual labor. They may feel different—a sore body instead of a headache and bleary eyes—but the end effect is the same, an inability to function normally. Fatigue leads to a decrease in your ability to carry out tasks. Several studies have demonstrated significant impairment in a person’s ability to carry out tasks that require manual dexterity, concentration and higher-order intellectual processing. Fatigue may happen acutely, which is to say in a relatively short time (hours) after some significant physical or mental activity. Or it, chronic, may occur gradually over several days or weeks. Typically, this situation occurs with someone who does

not get sufficient sleep over a prolonged period of time (as with sleep apnea, jet lag, or shift work) or someone who is involved in ongoing physical or mental activity with insufficient rest. General aviation pilots are typically not exposed to the same occupational stresses as commercial pilots (i.e., long duty days, circadian disruptions from night flying or time zone changes, or scheduling changes). Nevertheless, they will still develop fatigue from a variety of other causes. Given the single-pilot operation and relatively higher workload, they would be just as much at risk (possibly even more) to be involved in an accident than a commercial crew. Any fatigued person will exhibit the same problems: sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, apathy, feeling of isolation, annoyance, increased reaction time to stimulus, slowing of higher-level mental functioning, decreased vigilance, memory problems, task fixation and increased errors while performing tasks. None of these are good things to have happen to a pilot, much less if there is no one else in the aircraft to help out. Obtaining adequate sleep is the best way to prevent or resolve fatigue. Sleep provides the body with a period of rest and recuperation. Insufficient sleep
will result in significant physical and psychological problems. On average, a healthy adult does best with eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, but significant personal variations occur. For example, increasing sleep difficulties occur as we age, with significant shortening of nighttime sleep. A variety of medical conditions can influence the quality and duration of sleep. To name a few: sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, certain medications, depression, stress, insomnia, and chronic pain. Some of the more common social or behavioral issues are: late-night activities, excessive alcohol or caffeine use, travel, interpersonal strife, uncomfortable or unfamiliar surroundings, and shift work. No one is immune from fatigue. Yet, in our society, establishing widespread preventive measures to combat fatigue is often a very difficult goal to achieve. Individuals, as well as organizations, often ignore the problem until an accident occurs. Even then, implementing lasting change is not guaranteed. Lifestyle changes are not easy for individuals, particularly if that person isn’t in complete control of the condition. For example, commercial pilots must contend with shift work and circadian

rhythm disruption. Often, they also choose to commute long distances to work, so that by the time a work cycle starts they have already traveled for several hours. While a general aviation pilot may not have to deal with this, a busy lifestyle or other issues may lead to
fatigue. Therefore, general aviation pilots must make every effort to modify personal lifestyle factors that cause fatigue. Get plenty of rest and minimize stress before a flight. If problems preclude a good night’s sleep, rethink the flight and postpone it accordingly.

Longer naps produce sleep inertia, which is counterproductive. • Try to turn in at the same time each day. • If you can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed, get up and try an activity that helps induce sleep (watch non-violent TV, read, listen to relaxing music, etc).
EPA proposes policy on nanoscale materials in pesticide products WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today it plans to obtain information on nanoscale materials in pesticide products. Under the requirements of the law, EPA will gather information on what nanoscale materials are present in pesticide products to determine whether the registration of a pesticide may cause unreasonable adverse effects on the environment and human health. The proposed policy will be open for public comment. “We want to obtain timely and accurate information on what nanoscale materials may be in pesticide products,” said Steve Owens assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “This information is needed for EPA to meet its requirement under the law to protect public health and the environment.” A number of organizations, as well as government, academic and private sector scientists, have considered whether the small size of nanoscale materials or the unique or enhanced properties of nanoscale materials may, under specific conditions, pose new or increased hazards to humans and the environment. EPA also recognizes that nanoscale materials have a range of potentially beneficial public and commercial applications, including pest control
products. The agency will continue to encourage responsible and innovative development of products containing nanoscale materials to realize these benefits while also addressing health or environmental concerns. The new proposed policy options will be published in the Federal Register shortly. The notice will also propose a new approach for how EPA will determine whether a nanoscale ingredient is a “new” active or inert ingredient for purposes of scientific evaluation under the pesticide laws, when an identical, non-nanoscale form of the nanoscale ingredient is already registered under FIFRA. This approach will help ensure that EPA is informed about the presence of nanoscale ingredients in pesticide products and allows a more thorough review of the potential risks. Comments on the Federal Register notice will be accepted until 30 days after publication. The notice will be available atwww.regulations.gov in docket number EPA-HQ-OPP-2010-0197. More information or to read the proposed notice: http://www.epa.gov/ pesticides/regulating/nanotechnology. html

Buy, lease, or contract aircraft “A” or “B”? You decide which best deal is best. When we consider a purchase, we want to know how the total ownership cost of aircraft “A” compares to aircraft “B”. Which one is the better deal from a financial viewpoint?
Please notice that no qualifiers have been placed on the ownership method, intended usage, or specific expense category of either aircraft “A” or “B”. It might not even be an apples-toapples comparison. You might already own “A” and want to compare the cost
of keeping “A” to trading it for “B”. Your interest is strictly financial. From a big picture standpoint, aircraft “A” and “B” could be investment “A” and “B”. Which one is the better deal from a financial viewpoint? How do you make this financial comparison and
answer this question? Use Net Present Value (NPV) to evaluate and compare any situation “A” and “B” financially. What is NPV? How do you compute and use NPV?
what is NPV? NPV is a single dollar value that is calculated from a cash flow of payments over a period of time which has been adjusted for the time value of money. To adjust a cash flow to reflect the time value of money requires that each cash flow value be adjusted for the time the payment was received at an interest rate charged on the cash flow. Normally, the interest rate used in the adjustment is called the discount rate. The single dollar value of the total adjusted cash flow not including the initial investment is known as the Present Value (PV). The Net Present Value (NPV) equals the Present Value

(PV) less the Initial Investment. As an example, assume $100,000 is the initial investment in an aircraft. This aircraft investment produces a cash flow of $25,000 a year for 5 years. The total cash flow received over the five-year period is $125,000. Assume an interest rate (discount rate) of 10%. The $125,000 cash flow adjusted for the time the payment was received (assumed here to be at the end of each year) and the 10% interest rate produces a Present Value (PV) of $94,769.67. The Microsoft Excel PV financial function was used to make
this calculation. Therefore: NPV = ($5,230.33) = $94,769.67 (PV) less $100,000 (Initial Aircraft Investment) By definition; if the NPV=0, then the investment return is equal to the discount rate. If the NPV is greater than zero, the investment return has exceeded the discount rate. If the NPV is less than zero, the investment return is less than the discount rate. In the example above, the NPV calculation produced a value less than zero, a negative $5,230.33. Since the initial investment of $100,000 produced a negative NPV of $5,230.33 using a

For the actual mathematics involved, Google “NPV formula” and read about the formula. As you will see, the timing of the cash flow and the compounding of interest are both taken into account. It is much easier to use a financial calculator than hand calculating NPV using the formulas. The Microsoft Excel NPV financial function makes the calculation easy. NOTE: Excel’s

Air operators extend midwest season with cover crop seeding by Tim Buckley Cover crop seeding has changed Townsend Aviation’s fortunes for the better. Aviation support for midwest agriculture had been seasonal until the recent trend to no-till practices, adding cover crops into standing, mature corn and soybean crops in the late summer.
“We’ve tripled our acreage in the last three years,” said Townsend, who said they seeded over 15,000 acres last August. Farmers have flocked to cover crops like annual ryegrass because of the immense economic benefits: erosion control, reduced compaction, improved
soil health, increased crop production and lower costs on fuel and fertilizer.
“We’ve tripled our acreage in the last three years,” said Townsend Cameron Mills planted 1100 acres of annual ryegrass in 2009 and 2010. Despite very different weather patterns, the Indiana grower said the aerial seeding produced fantastic results. Mills used Townsend Aviation and said the operator flew on 22,000 pounds of seed accurately in one afternoon with two planes. “Annual ryegrass seed is very light, so you have to make adjustments for that, with a narrower swath,” Mills said. “Seasoned pilots who apply liquids know about wind drift and protecting
neighbor’s property.” Townsend uses Satloc M3 GPS equipment on his planes and helicopter, and upgraded his computer software with Flight Plan Online. “I can either upload field data files sent electronically from farmers or have them come in with their maps and I’ll load it here,” said Derek Shannon, one of Townsend’s mapping technicians. “I also invested in a new truck specifically because of the cover crop market,” Townsend said. A beefy Ford cab and chassis was shipped to Auger Dan’s in Trumann, AR, where a stainless steel loader and scale assembly was mounted. “The front-load auger is quicker and much safer than the old loading operation,” said Mills. “They can put about 2500 pounds of annual ryegrass seed into the plane in under three minutes.” Townsend said word of mouth, from clients like Cameron Mills, is responsible

You Cover the Crops... We’ll Cover the Rest
Townsend Aviation’s Thrush is being loaded with annual ryegrass seed from an Auger Dan’s custom, front-loading auger truck built in Arkansas. Townsend flies on ryegrass seed for clients like Cameron Mills (Walton, IN) who uses the seed as a cover crop on wintering, no-till fields. Cover crops are hugely popular and aerial seeding is seen as the most efficient and least expensive method. Townsend has expanded his operation to accommodate the cover crop market.
for most of the increase of his cover crop business. However, he was invited by Purdue University to a conference last year on no-till and cover crops. “We were the only air operator with a booth,” Townsend said, “and it was very effective. People are moving to aerial seeding very rapidly because it’s way more convenient than drill
seeding and doesn’t cost any more.” Further east, Jeff Chorman flies on annual ryegrass and other cover crops to farms near the seashores in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Cover crops have been a major part of the effort to reduce nitrate leaching from poultry farms into the seafood-rich Chesapeake Bay.

hands-on flying
California rice country - part one California - The name still bears a whisper to thoughts of a bountiful land where lush valleys are surrounded by
evergreen covered mountains. It’s a place where the promise has not died, only foreshadowed by the turbulence
of today’s social and economic times. Politics and bureaucracy aside, the Golden State still has a rich and diverse agricultural base. The Sacramento Valley of northern California is home to an estimated 550,000 acres of California rice production. The main staple of twothirds of the world’s population; rice is a high-demand product. American rice farmers are leading the world in production per acre. Technology, science and innovative techniques are increasing quality and yield - all while having minimal environmental impact. In many instances, rice production is actually providing wildlife habitat. The best part of rice production, however, is the fact it’s nearly all done by air!
Rice is definitely an ag pilot’s crop. Once the basic tractor work is done and the field is prepared, the aerial applicator takes over. From preplant fertilizer all the way through to harvest, the aerial applicators of California’s “rice bowl” are hard at it. Ground rigs are shunned and are only grudgingly used in areas known as “no fly zones”, places where certain chemicals are restricted from application by air. Many operators have incorporated a ground rig extension to their own business in order to be able to provide that service when necessary.
During the season, every corner of the sky is occupied by two or three airplanes working in close proximity of each other.

May is the big month in rice country. The farmers are rolling the dice on the weather, flooding their fields and loading up air strips with trailers full of seed and/or fertilizer. Once the seed is taken out of storage, it’s placed in bins and soaked in water before being loaded up for delivery. The soaking provides the seed with weight so that it will incorporate evenly in the flooded field and also begins the germination process. When the rice is weighed, an average of 22.5% is figured as water weight. Once the seed is wet, it can be a tense 24 to 48 hours for the farmer, as well as the aerial applicator, it’s got to be in the field as soon as possible. Rice seed sprouts quickly and can die in the truck if held too long. If the weather turns bad, high winds, torrential rain or just about anything
short of a full blown natural disaster, the seed still has to be flown on. Take my word for it - rice flying can test an ag pilot’s ability, stamina and at times the limits of his courage. Of course if conditions exceed safe operation limits, the seed has to take its chances in the truck. During the season, every corner of the sky is occupied by two or three airplanes working in close proximity of each other. Pilots have to have their heads on a swivel in order to avoid the real possibility of a midair collision. It is intense flying that requires solid concentration on the job at hand. A rice pilot establishes the habit of scanning the sky above and ahead of him as well as the edge of the field in order to avoid pulling up and into another airplane. The 500-foot ferrying rule is definitely a good idea, higher is better. Near misses happen, but fortunately no one has swapped any paint thus far. The pilots I have had the pleasure to work with and around are adamant about coordination and courtesy to other aviators. This is an area where cooperation works. Competitors share airstrips and airspace without
complaint. It’s a good practice that would be nice to see in other parts of the country. Rice flying is a specialty in aerial application. It’s a business that leaves the spray booms hanging on the wall more times than not and the spreader all but bolted onto the airplane. Precision application with a spreader is kind of like painting a fine portrait with the same type of brush that you use to paint your house. It’s tricky, but it can be done. For a spray pilot, the learning curve into rice flying is steep. It’s a practice of constant adaption to different materials, conditions and applied rates. Experience comes quickly though in the fast paced cycle of operations. During the push to get the seed on, a pilot is in the cockpit from dawn to dark. It’s not unheard of for a pilot to fly a 100 loads a day. There has been a lot of water under the bridge since I first earned my wings in this area. Next month in my column, I’ll go deeper into the life of a rice pilot. Until then fly well and stay safe!

Accelerated stalls Accelerated stalls, and especially cross-control stalls, are subjects that I have mentioned previously in this column. In My Opinion, they need a repeat. A cross-control stall usually occurs when you are in a steep turn, heavy, close to the ground and about to overshoot your next swath run. Instead of breaking it off and starting the entry all over again (which is what you should do) you just feed in a little down-wing rudder. The turncoordination ball goes unnoticed as it silently slides towards the higher wing. The stall warning light is on and you just ignore it, like you always do. The lower wing decelerates slightly and you pull back on the stick just a little bit harder and increase your angle of
bank another five degrees. That’s not much, you think. Then, very suddenly and with no warning, the airplane quickly, violently rolls towards the low wing. Viola! You are inverted at 200’ AGL. You have less than 3 seconds to live.
The accelerated stall comes as a surprise to some pilots. The accelerated stall comes as a surprise to some pilots because of its occurrence at a higher airspeed than
where the airplane normally stalls (wing load of one G). Remember, a wing can stall at any speed - all that is necessary is for the angle of attack to get high enough. As the G-load increases (during a turn) the stall speed also increases. Your wing will reach its critical angle of attack when the airspeed is proportional to the square root of the wing load. For example, if you are pulling three Gs in a turn back to the field, your stall speed has increased to 1.73 times what it would be under normal circumstances (square root of 3 is roughly 1.73). Aggravate this with a little cross-control input and you have a recipe for disaster. I heard, recently, of this very

engine run-up and departed. When the airplane was approximately 60-100 feet above the runway, the engine began “spitting and sputtering.” The pilot made a forced landing off the end of the runway and collided with trees. After the airplane came to a stop, the pilot noticed a fire starting in the radial engine and was able to quickly egress the airplane. A FAA inspector performed a postaccident examination of the airplane. He reported that both wings sustained substantial damage and the post impact fire consumed the cockpit, fuselage, empennage, left wing and the inboard section of the right wing. NTSB Identification: *WPR11FA221* Date: May 09, 2011 Location: Miles City, MT Aircraft: Air Tractor Inc AT-802A Injuries: 1 Fatal. On May 9, 2011, an Air Tractor AT802A sustained substantial damage when it impacted mountainous terrain about 11 miles east of the Frank Wiley Field Airport (MLS), Miles City, Montana. The pilot was fatally injured. The cross-country flight originated from Aberdeen, South Dakota, destined for Fort Benton, with an
intermediate fuel stop at MLS. Information provided by the FAA revealed that the operator/owner of the airplane contacted the FAA on the evening of May 9, 2011, after becoming concerned when the pilot had not arrived at his intended destination. The Montana Aeronautics Division and United States Air Force, local law enforcement and local volunteer pilots commenced search and rescue operations throughout the area of the pilot’s intended flight path. The wreckage was located by aerial units on the afternoon of May 10, 2011 about 11 miles east of MLS. A witness, who was located about 0.3 miles northeast of the accident site reported that while inside her home, she heard the sound of an airplane flying low and fast past her home. She said that the sound of the airplane was very brief and seemed like the airplane was moving very fast from the east to the west. Shortly after hearing the airplane, she heard a “poof” sound and immediately walked over to the window to look outside for the airplane. The witness stated that she didn’t see the airplane or any smoke within the area. The witness

further stated that she observed a cloud layer covering the top of the mountain ridge to the west and noted a light rain mist with good visibility was below the layer of clouds. According to a company representative, the pilot was returning from Wisconsin following the completion of an aerial firefighting contract and was relocating the airplane to Fort Benton. Examination of the accident site revealed that the airplane impacted trees and terrain about 11 miles east of MLS. All major structural components of the airplane were located throughout the approximate 360-foot long debris path, which was oriented on an approximate heading of 212° magnetic. The wreckage was recovered to a secure location for further examination. NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA222* Date: May 11, 2011 Location: Pleasant Grove, CA Aircraft: Thrush Aircraft Inc S2R-T34 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot stated that he had just completed spraying a field and was landing to the north with what he
estimated to be a 12 mile per hour tailwind. As the airplane touched down on the main wheels with the tailwheel off the ground, the airplane began to veer to the left. The pilot attempted to correct the airplane back toward the runway, but it continued to veer left towards a berm. He added full power to attempt to abort the landing, but collided with a trailer near the departure end of the runway. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal flight. The pilot noted that the reloading and refueling equipment is located at the north end of the airstrip and they always land to the north and takeoff to the south to save time. damage including separation of the aft tail boom/tail rotor assembly, and crushing of the forward fuselage. The helicopter was being used to spray fungicide on a wheat field. The operator reported that the helicopter pilot would land the helicopter on the platform of a truck positioned in the farm field. Another employee would then fill the chemical hopper and add fuel as required while the pilot remained in the running helicopter. Once filled, the pilot would then proceed back to the field and continue the spray operation. According to the operator, the pilot had completed twelve of the cycles and was proceeding back to the field when the accident occurred. The terrain where the accident occurred consisted of rolling hills. The helicopter came to rest on the back side of a hill. At the top of the hill, pieces of nozzles from the spray booms were found. The tail rotor and chemical hopper were separated from the helicopter. S2R-T600 was substantially damaged during a forced landing to a field, following a partial loss of engine power while maneuvering at low altitude near Greenwood, Mississippi. The pilot stated that while making a pass over a field on a north heading, the airplane experienced a sudden partial loss of engine power. The engine then regained power, surged, and the pilot thought he might be able to turn back to the field he was just spraying; however, the engine subsequently experienced another partial loss of power. The pilot then
released the remaining chemicals and decided to land straight ahead, into a bean field. During the landing, the airplane struck a ditch and came to rest upright. Examination of the wreckage by an FAA inspector revealed substantial damage to both wings. The airplane was equipped with a Pratt and Whitney PT6A engine which will undergo further examination. NTSB Identification: *WPR11CA229* Date: May 18, 2011 Location: Kahlotus, WA Aircraft: Rockwell International S-2R
Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he attempted to takeoff with a strong crosswind. During the takeoff sequence, the airplane veered off the airstrip onto soft dirt and subsequently nosed over. Weather reporting stations within 30 nautical miles of the airstrip reported wind from 324 degrees, varying from 6 to 7 knots and gusting up to 16 knots. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal flight.

aircraft powered by the H80 engine, and we expect to certify in mid2011. In addition to these activities, the team has expanded the global turboprop services network, signing an additional three authorized service centers in the first half of this 2011.” The H80 engine completed its first flight on the Thrush 510G aerial applicator in November 2010. Certification testing continues at the Business & General Aviation Turboprops facility near Prague in the Czech Republic.
Recent H80 engine agreements include: • Aircraft Industries, a Czech-based aircraft manufacturer, signed a sales agreement with GE Aviation for the purchase of M601 and H80 engines. The H80 engine for the L410-UVP-E20, a twinengine commuter aircraft, will bring the aircraft significantly more performance capability. This marked the first H80 engine agreement for the commuter segment. • Technoavia, a Russian-based aircraft manufacturer, signed a ten-year sales and cooperation agreement with GE Aviation for the purchase of H80 engines. The engine agreement is for the newly designed Rysachok aircraft, a twin-engine, ten-seat general aviation aircraft, which will primarily be used by Russia’s Civil Aviation State Pilot Schools.
Technoavia signed firm engine orders for 30 aircraft and has options for another 30 aircraft. This was the first H80 engine agreement in Russia. • GE Aviation expanded its turboprops’ services network this year, with new authorized service centers (ASC). GE ASC’s offer comprehensive line maintenance, removals and re-installations of engines and line-replaceable units (LRUs) and engine spares for the M601 and H80 engine families. GE Aviation provides ASC’s with comprehensive material support and training. Recently the following aircraft maintenance companies were named GE authorized service centers: • TAM Aviação Executiva, a premier Fixed Base Operator (FBO) with five locations in Brazil and a primary maintenance facility located in Jundiai, SP, provides service and support for business & general aviation aircraft that is unparalleled in the region. Recognized for worldclass excellence, and as the largest Cessna Citation service center outside the U.S., TAM AE offers service and support for a multitude of aicraft ranging from propeller driven through jet propulsion. • Solo Aviation Systems C.A., based in Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela, is an engine maintenance and services provider of more than

30 years, attending to a wide range of aircraft models in private, corporate and commercial aviation. Solo Aviation’s highly experienced team provides maintenance and services for M601 engines installed on L410 aircraft. • Alagro Fumigaciones, located in Funes, Argentina, specializes in maintenance and repair of aircraft. With more than 40 years of experience, Alagro provides engine inspections, airworthiness extensions, airworthiness approvals in Argentina, and a variety of repairs for aircraft and airframes. In addition to working with more than 90 customers across Argentina, Alagro also collaborates on repairs and production with Ecuador, Uruguay and Brazil. GE Aviation Business & General Aviation Turboprops has more than 1,600 M601 engines in service that have accumulated more than 17 million flight hours on 30 applications. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design
techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuelefficient, durable engine compared with the M601 engine, with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will also feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls, significantly enhanced hot-day takeoff performance and high-altitude cruise speeds. The H80 will provide the option of a single- or dualacting governor, allowing customers flexibility in propeller selection. GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. For collective action In my travels consulting and giving lectures, I have met many ag-aviation companies with numerous and various ways of conducting their businesses. Many of these companies have been successful, while others could improve an unfavorable situation and even others are struggling to save their beleaguered business. The question I always ask myself, trying to understand why these differences, is this: What leads companies with similar situations and opportunities to arrive at such different results? Why does the same conditions result in some companies being successful and others to fail? I am not referring to growth that occurs because of poor service, equipment and price cutting (that doesn’t even cover operation costs). Companies like these
arise and grow, no doubt, but they do not linger. I referring to companies that are innovative and win over their customers in a professional manner with reliable service and efficiency. When looking for a reasonable explanation for the success or failure of a company, I discover through a critical look at the structure of these organizations, the answer lies in the knowledge and skills of the management and the teamwork of everyone involved with the company. The common denominators for success are innovation, technological development, attention to detail and costs control. Above all factors, the successful companies have market vision and are proactive. Agricultural aviation suffers, in part, from what could be called a Catch 22:
We have perfect conditions to win over new markets, but for lack of organization, excessive competition and in many cases too much ridiculous pride, we end up stepping on one another causing everyone to lose. Markets in certain areas could be described as a balloon with a limited amount of air - controlled avidly by certain companies, rather than unite with their competition to “inflate” and grow the market. In most cases, the growth of a company in this situation is measured by how many customers it can “steal”. These are precisely the companies who are not making use of the latest technology, cutting prices and making it difficult for everyone, when joint and coordinated actions with their competition would be better. Often, a company in this situation mistakenly
believes it is growing, when in fact it is not. Their market is shrinking (like a wilting balloon), which will eventually and suddenly eliminate all. This is my observation from training students and consulting with various agricultural aviation companies. There is a need for collective actions - that could be coordinated by trade associations whereby we can expand our markets by working together. When companies act alone, the results are few winners and many losers.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. T F N
AT-402B: Go turbo. The AT-402B, with the time-proven Pratt & Whitney PT6A-15AG turbine engine, offers impressive climb rates and overall performance. The AT-402B’s light handling characteristics help reduce pilot fatigue – while delivering the payload, speed and productivity that helps create profits. Visit your Air Tractor dealer and learn how Wells Fargo’s financing options for qualified buyers make owning an Air Tractor more affordable than you might think. T F N
AT-502B: More performance; more profit potential. With Air Tractor’s AT-502B there’s plenty of power and a big, 500gallon payload to please both pilot and operator. The Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG turbine engine delivers efficient and effective performance that shortens ferry times and reduces takeoffs and landings. Since 1987 the AT-502 series has set the standard as the industry’s most popular ag plane. You can own one with attractive financing options from Wells Fargo. Talk to your Air Tractor dealer. TFN

AT-401B: Power and payload at the right price. Step up to a highly productive, low maintenance piston engine ag plane for a price that makes solid business sense. The economical 400-gallon capacity AT-401B has a pistonengine price tag, plus all the reliability, durability, safety features and flying ease that make Air Tractor the industry leader. For qualified buyers, Wells Fargo has attractive and flexible terms available. Call your Air Tractor dealer.
AT-802: Capacity that creates profits. An 800-gallon hopper, zippy 190 mph ferry speeds, and greater working capacity than any other ag aircraft on the market - the AT-802 is simply a hoss. With the AT-802 you’ll ferry faster, spray more fields and do bigger jobs all in one load. That’s production that only Air Tractor can offer you. Visit with your Air Tractor dealer about the AT-802. And ask about special Air Tractor financing now available from Wells Fargo for qualified buyers. T F N
