Right in the Old Bread Basket. As the world leader in getting the job done, we’re proud of the agricultural aviators who help farms large and small fertilize crops, control insects and eliminate weeds. Together, we’re producing maximum crop yields from fewer acres, keeping tractors off wet fields to prevent topsoil runoff, and spraying for pests and diseases three times faster than any other form of application can. The result is 71 million acres of U.S. cropland that’s protected and productive. Which makes Ag Aviation the next best thing to sliced bread.

Thrush Aircraft

A message from Thrush Aircraft In just a few short weeks, we’ll be headed to Louisville for the 2014 NAAA Annual Convention. It’s our favorite event of the year – as it gives us the chance to catch up with those of you flying our airplanes (or are thinking about it), find out how your year has gone, and talk over what we can do to serve you better. Because as many of you know, service for us means more than just answering the phones and taking orders – it means listening to the folks that make a living with our products and helping them get better every time they fly. In that regard, it’s our tradition to use this editorial space each year not to promote our own products – but rather to share with you some of the things we’re doing to promote ag aviation – as we continue our dedication to raising awareness and building appreciation of the good work our industry does. It’s what every leader should aspire to, and it’s a responsibility we take to heart. In 2014, we focused this responsibility in three areas – growers, fire fighting, and in helping more young pilots afford the training they need to make a meaningful start in this business. For growers, this summer we launched a new marketing campaign called “Celebrating Ag Aviation” – and rolled it out at the world’s largest airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in front of some 600,000 attendees. The messaging is quite special as it speaks to the audience on behalf of Ag Aviation – and promotes the industry and the people who work in it – by making growers and others aware of the tremendous amount of good Ag airplanes and their pilots do. The first ad in the series is called “Right In The Old Bread Basket”, and it appears on the opposite page. We’re pleased to say that reaction has been terrific – and much more rewarding than simply hawking our products.

aircraft in the air and over a fire many times faster than most existing state resources allow. And all for very little cost. Pilots and their aircraft both have to be AG SEAT certified to serve in this capacity – and all work would fall under the control of the local fire fighting authorities in each state. It’s important to note that we plan to encourage participating states to make this training available to pilots of all makes of ag aircraft that meet their state’s AG SEAT certification requirements. It’s the right thing to do – and we’re very proud to be behind it all. To further support the AG SEAT program, our new 510G Switchback is completing the certification process and should be ready as planned for the 2015 fire season. If you haven’t seen the airplane yet, stop by our display at NAAA and have a look. In short, the 510G Switchback allows an operator to switch from spray operations to pinpoint accurate fire fighting in a matter of minutes. Meaning that, when called upon, an AG SEAT pilot can be ready to serve as a first responder and keep small wildfires, small. The motto of the AG SEAT program is: “First in the air. First on the fire.” – and the Switchback will allow pilots to be just that.

Last year in this space we announced the creation of the Thrush Agricultural Aviation Scholarship in concert with Women in Aviation. The scholarship awards $10,000 to a winning candidate to be used to further their agricultural aviation flight training. We’re happy to report our 2013 winner, Andrea Coppick, has already started her training. And, we’re every bit as happy to let you know that we have renewed the scholarship award for this year as well. All of the above is our way of giving back to an industry that has given so much to us – and for which we are very grateful. Please do come see us at NAAA 2014, and join us in helping ag aviation continue on its path of successful growth for many years to come.

For the aerial fire fighting arena, we created and launched a new program this year called AG SEAT, which stands for “Agriculture-based Single Engine Air Tanker.” In a nutshell, this program includes the training syllabus, course materials, specialized instruction to train and certify ag pilots on how to use their aircraft effectively as first responders in a fire fighting role, and how to work closely with individual state agencies and local fire companies when called upon. Having this Ag-based resource on-call significantly increases a state’s ability to rapidly respond to a wildfire and to have highly trained and certified pilots and their

Fast horses, good bourbon and the NAAA Convention There are not many things better than good Kentucky bourbon or the excitement of the horse track. Even though there will not be a Kentucky Derby going on in Louisville during December, you are still poised to have as much or better of a time attending the 48th National Agricultural Aviation Association’s (NAAA) annual convention and exhibition. I am sure there will be plenty of bourbon without the Derby! The NAAA’s Welcome Reception to be held Monday night, December 8, officially kicks off the week’s festivities (for a complete schedule, see page 11E of this Show Guide). The exhibit hall will be open Tuesday and Wednesday with the Farewell Reception and Banquet Thursday night, December 11. As always, the NAAA convention and exhibition promises and delivers an excellent venue for ag-pilots worldwide to network, educate and have an all-around good time. Already, registration numbers for the Louisville show are outpacing recently held conventions.

Reading the pages of AgAir Update’s Show Guide for the NAAA convention and exhibition will inform you about what to do, where to go and when to do it. For those of you not yet registered, everything you need to know about how to do that can be found here. The purpose of AgAir Update’s Show Guide is primarily two-fold; promote attendance to the NAAA convention and exhibition and better facilitate the time of those attending. When you read the Show Guide, you will see exhibitors’ ads featuring their products and services. In some cases, you will read a more detailed accounting of what you can expect when stopping by an exhibitor’s booth. You will also read about speakers, the program schedules for NAAA and WNAAA, as well as any other important events taking place. Reading AgAir Update’s Show Guide is an exercise in preparation. It will help you identify which sessions and receptions to attend and which exhibitors should be at

the top of your list to visit. I hope you can attend all the events NAAA has scheduled. I know having quality time with over 145 exhibitors can be a challenge. Planning with AgAir Update’s Show Guide will help you achieve that goal. I would like to extend an open invitation for everyone to visit AgAir Update’s booth, #828. Enter the exhibit hall at the NAAA booth and continue walking until you pass the Air Tractor booth. Take a left and we are on the corner in front of you! Let’s talk ag-aviation. These are exciting times and AgAir Update is right smack in the middle of them. We will be moving throughout the exhibit hall making videos and taking photos. Be sure to wear your best smile. Expect a good time with fantastic opportunities to grow your business and increase your profits when attending the NAAA’s annual convention and exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky December 8-11, 2014. Be there! I will be looking for ya!

From the NAAA

Bluegrass skies ahead at NAAA’s 2014 Convention Dec. 8–11 in Louisville On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to NAAA’s 48th Annual Convention & Exposition Dec. 8–11. With access to two dozen education programs, 140+ exhibitors and over 1,000 attendees, you won’t find a better opportunity to stay up on the latest technology, products, techniques and trends impacting your business than at the 2014 NAAA Convention. This year we’re headed to a new destination, Louisville, Ky., a city known for its hospitality, horses, bourbon and fun. Louisville is centrally located along the 1-65 corridor between Indianapolis and Nashville, within a day’s drive for two-thirds of the U.S. population. It is a wonderful city with a fantastic array of restaurants and attractions, including the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Horseracing’s mecca is just a 15-minute cab ride from NAAA’s headquarters hotel, The Galt House. All events are at The Galt House hotel, located along the Ohio River, and the Kentucky International Convention Center, two blocks from the hotel. In other words, everything is walkable. You can walk from the hotel to the convention center via the Louie Link Indoor Skywalk. (Limited transportation will also be provided to and from the convention center.) More than 50 restaurants and the Urban Bourbon Trail are also within walking distance of the hotel. The Galt House will serve as NAAA’s headquarters hotel, making it the place to see and be seen if you work in agricultural aviation. Room rates are $110 and $130 per night for the Rivue and Suite Towers, respectively, but you’ll have to act fast—the cutoff date for NAAA’s room block is Nov. 13. Book your room at www. agaviation.org/hotel or call 1-800-The-Galt. The fun begins at the Kickoff Breakfast Dec. 8. We are pleased to present the “Voice of Rural America,” Trent Loos, as our featured speaker at the 2014 Kickoff

Breakfast. A well-known radio host, Loos connects rural and urban America by sharing the positive and motivating story of production agriculture. Trent is a sixth-generation farmer who launched his radio program “Loos Tales” on a single station in Missouri in 2001. Today, 3 million listeners hear his show online and on nearly 100 radio stations in 19 states. As a self-described agricultural activist, Loos encourages producers to stand up and proudly tell consumers about life at their operations. You’ll leave with an extra bounce in your step after Loos’ encouraging pep talk. After the Kickoff Breakfast, get up to speed on the latest aerial application advancements at the ASABE Technical Session. The ASABE session is the R&D component of our convention programming. Members of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers will report on a number of “new” tools that are ready to incorporate into your everyday operations, including a simple, low-cost imaging system that mounts onto your aircraft for collecting GPS-referenced images of your fields and the Aerial Application Technology Research Unit’s new aerial spray nozzle models. Several states have granted CEUs for this session, including Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wyoming. Each year we look for new ways to make the convention better, and we feel we have succeeded in that regard with this year’s substance-packed programming. Twentyfour educational sessions are on the docket, including programs focused on UAVs, aerial firefighting, chemicals, engine performance and maintenance, security and FAA regulations, helicopters and airframe manufacturer updates. NAAA is also excited about our great lineup of Thursday afternoon sessions featuring the NAAREF Safety Session, a special session on cover crop applications and the “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session for new and low-time ag pilots. This fast-paced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots consists of a series of speed mentoring rounds

led by experienced operators and pilots, insurance representatives and ag schools. Two Compaass Rose Sessions are also available for new and low-time pilots on Dec. 7 and Dec. 10. We strongly encourage you to attend NAAA’s General Session Dec. 10 for a fascinating presentation on generational dynamics in the workforce and the agricultural aviation industry. Multigenerational workforce expert Shira Harrington will shed light on the unique characteristics that distinguish four generations of workers from each other. She will also use case studies to examine generational dynamics within the agricultural aviation industry specifically. Armed with extensive research and her unique, realworld perspective of today’s workforce, Shira will provide insights to help attendees bridge the perceived gaps that can manifest between multiple generations working within the same aerial application operation. In NAAA’s 2013 post-convention survey, 72 percent of respondents identified the NAAA Trade Show as their favorite event. This year, the world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show will feature more than 140 exhibitors from all facets of the agricultural aviation sector and seven aircraft on the trade show floor. Whether you plan on upgrading your GPS system, are in the market for a new aircraft or simply want to investigate new crop protection products available from different chemical companies, you’ll find it at NAAA’s 2014 Trade Show. Our Live Auction is the single most important fundraiser for the association. One of the highlights of this year’s auction will be Pratt & Whitney Canada’s generous donation of a brand new PT6A-34AG engine. This is the second straight year Pratt & Whitney Canada has donated a new engine and the latest in a string of lucrative offerings Pratt & Whitney has provided to NAAA’s Auction. Along with the PT6 engine, a number of other great items are up for bid. See NAAA page 6E

Agtelligent introduces modular components Mixmate mobile blending systems, created by Agtelligent, introduces modular options, beginning with a new, free app. The Mixmate Android app, which is available for download in the Google Play Store, is used for manual data entry and, when combined with Mixmate hardware modules, increases efficiency by creating an automated system. It also calculates batches, records usage information and tracks fertilizer and chemical inventory. Your data is securely backed up to Intersect in case your device is lost or destroyed. The Intersect cloud service subscription has features that allow you to synchronize data between multiple devices and the office and allows you to manage and track assets and inventory directly from your web browser. A dashboard map view shows the location of devices, the status of jobs and notifications

are displayed as events happen. Jobs can be built, scheduled and assigned to operators and equipment in minutes. Your data is secure and is only shared with those who you grant permission. Notifications and reports can be automatically generated and shared with individuals specific to a completed task. For example, a grower could receive a detailed report when a chemical application is completed and the landowner can also receive a notification. Intersect will be the connection to third-party desktop and cloud-based applications. Â In addition to the free Android app and the Intersect cloud service, Mixmate modules allow you to create an automated system and are designed to work with scales, flowmeters, electric pumps, and valves. Users can improve record keeping and measurement accuracy by adding a flowmeter or scale, and add valves to automate their system. Whether you are

designing a new system or are looking to improve your current system, Mixmate will fit your needs. The Intersect cloud service, Mixmate app and modules are innovative products of Agtelligent, a family owned business based in Oakland, Iowa. Agtelligent was formed with the goal of bringing precision equipment and new ideas to the market to automate and streamline agricultural processes around the world. Those interested in learning more about Agtelligent are encouraged to visit them at booth 800 at the National Agricultural Aviation Association convention in Louisville, KY. from December 8th through December 11th, by visiting the official websites at www.agtelligent.com, www. mixmate.com as well as following the company on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

GarrCo Products

Field results show it pays to take Control™ by Dennis Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas, dgardisser@wrkofar.com It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80 percent of the time nothing happens, 10 percent of the time the result is worse, and 10 percent of the time there is a definite improvement. Laboratory results may be better, but actual field experience has been pretty close to this. For years, Arkansas S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of drift potential. These evaluations have included a variety of different equipment setups and operating variables and typically include the favored drift reduction additives for the area. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, there have been a few products that consistently show a positive response. Control™ from GarrCo Products, Inc., has been one of the products that has consistently shown a reduction in drift potential. A replicated field study was conducted a few years ago to look at 19 different drift control additives and water using two aircraft. The aircraft were selected to give two separate speed scenarios, at 115 and 150 mph. This study appears on Garrco.com. I encourage you to obtain a copy of that report and see how you favorite product performed. Control™ was one of the top performing products in this study. The key to consistency can also hinge back to how well products perform under real field situations. Arkansas had many operators utilizing Control™ as a drift control additive. Some of the comments I hear are:

• “Best material I’ve ever used.” • “Very easy to mix and load.” • “The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone.” • “Where can I get some Control™ ?” When one starts hearing these types of comments, there may be more to the performance than just good lab results. I was visiting a couple of different operators during the season and overheard conversations where they were either going to borrow some Control™ from someone else’s pallet until their shipment came in or another operator was coming to borrow some from there. This alone may tell the true story on performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. John Garr and I met with an Arkansas aerial applicator on a very cold morning to evaluate several different tank mixes. John has some new products under development and the mix results on those are another story, but we tried every way we could think of to cause mix problems with Control™ without success. Control™ mixed very easily under all scenarios, even with almost ice-cold water! I have had any number of operators ask me which drift control products are best. I’m not so sure there is a best product. Remember there are many application variables. I would recommend that operators select a product that consistently shows positive results. Also, additives alone are not the complete answer, although properly utilized; they may provide an extra margin of safety. Operators should use every tool possible to avoid drift, and proper equipment setup and operation will always play a dominant role.

Control™ Boosts Fungicide Performance, Ups Yield Deposition Aid/Drift Retardant

In an aerial, low-volume, fungicide application study: • Adding Control to a branded, commercial fungicide increased yield of corn by 10 bu/A over fungicide alone. • If corn is $4.50/bu, that’s an extra $45 per acre on a very small investment. • Contact us for more information on the study and a free sample. ™

There is still time to make your plans to join the WNAAA Dec. 8–11 in Louisville, Ky., for the 2014 WNAAA Convention. The WNAAA Convention is held in conjunction with the NAAA Convention & Exposition and is open to all women, including spouses and employees who work in the agricultural aviation industry. You don’t have to be a member of the WNAAA to join us for the festivities. There are many, many events planned for the WNAAA Convention this year. Come out and be a part of them!

Meet and Greet (RSVP by Nov. 17) Monday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Christmas at the Galt House and Shopping First things first, enjoy breakfast while hearing Trent Loos connect rural and urban American. Following the Kickoff Breakfast, the women’s first activity will be to tour the Christmas at The Galt House attractions. The sightseeing starts with the KaLightoscope Christmas Carol, a retelling of Charles Dickens’ famous tale as told through larger-thanlife handcrafted luminaries, performers and 3D projection. The Meet and Greet is the perfect time to put a face to a name while meeting this year’s WNAAA officers and directors. Guests of the WNAAA will also get to enjoy a taste of Kentucky drinks. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes and end at the Mistletoe Marketplace and The Galt House’s unique boutique shops, giving you just enough time to get some shopping in before the WNAAA President’s Open House. There is no cost for the Meet and Greet, but we will need a final headcount by Nov. 17 to enjoy this spectacular event as a group. Flight Plan Online brings together some of the best technologies to give you a better way to communicate with your customers and manage your business so you can focus on spraying more acres. You and your pilots will be able to spend more productive time in the air and less time doing paperwork. Your customers will appreciate the professional and accurate mapping that Flight Plan Online provides as well as its ease of use. They will welcome the ability to track the progress of their job orders with no phone calls. The most powerful component of Flight plan Online is the ability to process job orders using a centralized online system. This allows you or your customers to submit accurate jobs orders with geo referenced field maps. As job orders come in you can review them for accuracy and formally accept the work. Job orders can also include sensitive area alerts, field worker alerts, and adjacent crop identification to let you assess the level of risk. You can see all outstanding jobs on a map screen to filter those jobs into the most efficient batches for spraying. You can easily schedule job batches with common products and geographic proximity. Flight Plan Online generates all the information needed by the pilot, including loading sheets, individual job maps, and master maps that give an overview of all field locations. You can easily upload shape files to your guidance system to make the most of the guidance technology that is already in your plane. After spraying you can record actual application information and if desired, download the data from your guidance system to include as-sprayed imagery. You can then generate invoices from the job details already captured in the process, even on the same day you spray! Flight Plan Online also acts as your electronic system of record keeping, allowing you to generate a formal application report any time to document regulatory compliance. Flight Plan Online communicates wirelessly with the newer guidance systems and is compatible

with Android and iOS devices, enabling you to operate in a paperless way if desired. Our customers tell us that Flight Plan Online makes their lives better, takes stress out of the cockpit, makes them more efficient internally and brings better communication to their customers. GE Aviation’s H Series engine family extends its reach GE Aviation’s H80 engine family continues its growth with more certifications, more deliveries and more applications. The H80 engine has received certification from 10 aviation authorities to date (EASA, FAA, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Uruguay, Russia and South Africa). GE plans to pursue additional certifications as needed, in support of the growing H80-powered fleet. GE has also received EASA and FAA certification for both the H75 (750 SHP) engine as well as the H85 engine (850 SHP). With this expanded H Series model line, GE Aviation is pursuing new applications worldwide. To date, GE has delivered over 60 H80 engines to support Thrush 510G production. The Thrush 510G has been well received around the globe with H80powered 510G aircraft in operation in nine countries on four continents. Included in these deliveries were H80 engines to support an order for 20 510G aircraft by Beidahuang General Aviation Company of China, the largest single order of Thrush Aircraft ever.

“With two full years of service in diverse environments, the engine’s versatility and performance have become clear,” says Jim Stoker, President & Managing Executive of GE’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops. “As we approach our 200th engine delivery, we’re fulfilling our promise to reshape this market by providing innovative technologies like the Electronic Engine Control which is expected to enter service on the Nextant G90XT and more engine choices for operators.” In 2014, GE Aviation’s H Series engine powered four first flights of all new and engine STC retrofit aircraft: CAIGA’s AG300, an H85–powered, five-seat, light singleengine pressurized turboprop business aircraft with a carbon fiber composite airframe; Nextant Aerospace’s G90XT, a reimagined King Air C90 aircraft featuring new H75 engines, new propellers, Garmin G1000 avionics and new paint and interior; Technoavia’s allnew H80-powered Rysachok twin engine aircraft; Air Tech’s L410 engine upgrade, featuring new H75 engines and enhanced aircraft performance. GE Aviation has taken steps to ensure customers have support around the world. In 2014, GE added two new Authorized Service Centers (ASC’s) in the

United States: Mid-Continent Aviation in Hayti, MO and Souther Field Aviation in Americus, GA. GE is also authorizing new ASC points in South America like Air Andes in Argentina, to support recent and upcoming deliveries. GE Aviation expects to add additional ASC points in 2015 as the number H Series powered aircraft continues to increase. Line maintenance courses are offered to both ASC’s and customers alike to ensure that both learn how to keep their engines in top operating condition. The H80 turboprop engine family incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The engines feature a service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls. The H80 engine family also offers a standard auto start and limiting unit to simplify engine start-up as well as a choice of propeller governors to allow customers flexibility in propeller selection. GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. GE Aviation has a global service network to support these offerings. TracMap

TracMap progress continues – interview with North American sales manager Mark Hornback Question: Tracmap recently had an independent survey done with Tracmap customers across North America. What did you find in the survey? Mark: I thought it would be very positive, but it turned out incredibly positive. Our customers are very outspoken about Tracmap. Of the customers surveyed, 97% said they would recommend Tracmap to other operators. They also said they would purchase more TracMap systems. That’s a pretty big statement. Question: What are they so positive about with Tracmap? Mark: The two major factors were Outstanding Customer Support and being User Friendly. I have customers that help me sell systems. They talk with other pilots about Tracmap, and call me to tell me to call this pilot that had shown interest in their system. That says a lot right there. Question: Those are some important factors when dealing with GPS mapping systems. Pilots cannot afford to have issues in the field. What makes Tracmap stand out? Mark: Fortunately, we don’t have a lot of issues with our system. It’s easy to install into the aircraft, and they have been very reliable. Also just having someone answer the phones at all hours for questions is a huge factor. We work with customers across all time zones, and we are not limited to set hours. Having a centrally located distribution center in Griffin, GA with the ability to ship pretty much anywhere overnight is also a huge plus. Question: What have been the biggest changes for Tracmap in the last year? Mark: The outside light bar has been a big factor. We rolled it out last year at NAAA, and it has been going very well. We were selling every light bar we had in

Booth

stock for quite a while. The other big factor for Tracmap is Traclink, our Job Allocation and Proof of Placement System. It’s Google Earth based, and web based. Between Traclink and the wireless transfer of jobs to the aircraft from the office, it’s a very efficient way to go. Question: How has Traclink been received? Mark: For those who want to produce maps, and those who want to wirelessly send jobs to aircraft, it’s been going very well. I have some customers using Traclink for just making and or editing polygons. And others that are using it for scheduling of all jobs, and then storing all jobs for future reference. The customers like it because they can click, and create a report for a job done in several different formats to pass on to their customer. It also works with Flight Plan Online and Agsync easily. Question: How can Traclink help customers be more efficient? Mark: I was in New Zealand for the equivalent of their NAAA. It was amazing to see how Tracmap and Traclink are a driving force there. At the convention, Tracmap was the only GPS system to exhibit. I was talking with some operators about Traclink, asking them how Traclink has helped them. I was told in typical Kiwi fashion, that they cannot afford to NOT use it. The time spent in the cockpit trying to get a USB stick to work, or they have the wrong one, etc. cost them a lot of time. Now with it all being sent wirelessly to and from the aircraft has improved their efficiency greatly. I was also told that the cost for a year of Traclink can be recouped in a matter of a couple weeks. In New Zealand, Tracmap dominates the market. Virtually no-one uses anything else now. Question: We know about their GPS system for ag aviation. What else does TracMap do? Mark: We have been doing a lot of fire work. The fires

Mark visits Apex Helicopters Inc. in Waterloo, Ontario to do some training with Chris Vankoughnett and his crew. that were in Australia in the last year showcased the capabilities of the Tracmap system. We had systems in all types of aircraft fighting these fires. In Australia you have to show where water was taken from, and where it was dropped as well. Because water is so valuable the water that was taken from dams has to be replaced. The data that the Tracmap system easily generated was key in showing pick up, how many gallons taken from the water source, and where the water was placed. With the wireless ability, Fire Control was able to get the information quickly and accurately to manage the fire. TracMap is also very big in the ground industry in New Zealand. Most of the fertilizer and a lot of the spray that is applied to New Zealand farms are with TracMap guidance, and now they are rapidly expanding into the viticulture industry in Australia and North America, putting systems on grape harvesters and sprayers. Plus they are also used for lots of other things, like mosquito control, aerial toxic bait, and search and rescue. Question: So the future is looking good? Mark: Very much so. I have some great customers that will talk with potential customers about their Tracmap experience. We have a great product, and we are continually adding new functions to the systems in our product line.

Pratt & Whitney Canada

P&WC ag team aims for sweet spot to meet operator needs Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC), like no other engine OEM, has built a solid relationship with the agricultural industry. That means developing specific initiatives to address issues faced by the industry and the challenges of running an aerial application business. “In recent years we have actually accelerated our efforts to put ourselves in our operators’ cockpits and to understand what we can do to make their operations run more efficiently and maximize their profits,” says Denis Parisien, Vice President, General Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “A number of new initiatives and programs we have introduced were developed by our internal Ag Advisory Board to champion issues for our operators.” For example, the extended warranty for new PT6A engines, originally announced at the 2013 NAAA Annual Convention, provides greater peace of mind with coverage for five years or 2,500 hours, whichever occurs first, replacing the previous 1,000-hour warranty. This optional extended warranty will be available for purchase in 2015 on new PT6A-powered Ag Aircraft. Customers interested in taking advantage of this offer should inquire at their aircraft dealer. As well, the company has increased the Time Between Overhaul (TBO) interval for the PT6A-34AG engine from 3,600 hours to 4,000 hours. Considered the workhorse of the Ag industry, the PT6A-34AG engine has over 5.5 million hours of flight to its credit and is the most popular engine in the industry. P&WC has leveraged this experience to justify the increase to aviation authorities and to provide additional value to its customers. Since many Ag operators typically fly 400-500 hours per season, the extended TBO means another year of operation and profits before an overhaul is required. For the PT6A-34AG – as for all PT6 engines – there are no cycle limitations for TBO. Even with lowcycle fatigue (LCF) parts, the lowest life component on the PT6A-34AG engine has 16,000 cycles which is a standard that most other similar engines are challenged to meet.

38E

agairupdate.com

P&WC: “We’ve been taking notes”. “Our PT6 is a proven, durable product, possessing an exceptional track record that represents great value in the marketplace,” says Parisien. “The PT6A-34AG has been put through its paces for more than five million hours of flight, giving us an incredibly robust database on the engine’s performance and potential. It’s a competitive advantage that you can’t buy or manufacture overnight and one which we can turn into increased competitive advantage for our customers. That’s the reason we can extend the PT6A-34AG’s warranty and its TBO with confidence.” Other distinct benefits of the engine can be traced back to its original design. For example, fuel nozzle and hot section inspections can be conducted on wing. Proper maintenance means gaining an accurate view of the engine’s internal components on a regular basis to ensure safety and to maximize performance. P&WC provides for a fully planned maintenance environment that is personalized to meet the needs of the individual operator. Planned maintenance recognizes that Ag operators make money only when they are flying. P&WC offers Engine Condition Trend Monitoring (ECTM) which gives the operator the flexibility of scheduling maintenance events – such as hot section inspections – without interrupting their business operations. “Our maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) network for the Ag market continue to perform well for our operators,” says Parisien. “With both owned and designated facilities within our global service network, we have a proven ability to work quickly and cohesively to address both unexpected issues and regular ongoing maintenance needs. That comes from knowing just how critical an AOG situation can be for an operator and his clients.” P&WC’s Ag Advisory Board draws its members from virtually every department within the company, including Engineering, Marketing, Customer Service, Leaseco, Field Operations and Communications. Its

mandate is to examine how improvements can be made to the way in which the company interacts with its ag operators. The team takes a highly customercentric approach based on the belief the best way to ensure P&WC’s success is first to help ensure the success of its customers.

P&WC will be donating a PT6A-34AG engine for the NAAA’s live auction to raise funds for the organization and its many programs One of the premiere events on P&WC’s annual calendar is the NAAA Annual Convention to be held this year from December 8th to 11th in Louisville, Kentucky. As it did last year, P&WC will be donating a PT6A-34AG engine for the live auction to raise funds for the organization and its many programs. Last year, P&WC’s donated engine raised more than US$400,000. The company is also a strong supporter of PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) which provides continuing education to NAAA members on safety, security and drift mitigation. “We will once again have our full contingent on hand for NAAA,” says Parisien, “as it’s a prime opportunity to meet with our operators and find out what’s on their minds.” The P&WC PT6 Maintenance Training & Pilot Familiarization Technical Review, now a recognized seminar for A&P mechanics to meet their IA renewal requirements, will be held on December 7th, while the P&WC reception will take place on the evening of December 9th.

What makes a LEGEND? It starts with an idea, it grows with the PURPOSE to delight CUSTOMERS, and it’s born from VICTORY. But the only legends that are truly worth celebrating are those that carry on long after the first victory lap, where VISION, purpose and success are ongoing. This is the legend of the PT6 engine. Kimmel Aviation Ins.

608

Kimmel Aviation Insurance arose from a need to write hard to find and much needed insurance on cropdusters in 1972. The insurance side of the business started very pragmatically as customers were coming to the Kimmel Aviation Ag Aircraft dealership to trade in their $500 converted Super Cubs and Stearmans for the more productive and shiny new Cessna Ag Wagons and Ag Trucks. The $20,000 price tag and the ever evolving regulatory environment in the early 1970s mandated that all certified applicators must carry a minimum liability insurance policy or a bond

of $10,000. Cessna Finance also wanted to make sure their loans were protected. Very few companies would insure ag aircraft back in the early 1970s so Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find that coverage for their customers. From its humble beginnings, the insurance part of the business grew and formally incorporated Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1979. Over the years, Dorothy Kimmel has received numerous industry awards including, but not limited to MAAA Outstanding Service Award – 1975, MAAA President’s Award – 1985, WMAAA President, 15 years WMAAA Director to the WNAAA, WNAAA Vice Pres. 1991, WNAAA President 1992, Lee Abide Award – 1998, Arkansas (AAAA) Distinguished service award 2006, MAAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award – 2006. In addition, Dorothy also served on numerous committees and served both the NAAA and MAAA for each of her 45+ years as a member of both organizations. Her most outstanding achievement was to raise a family of four boys, all who entered the ag aviation field and chose career paths closely related to ag aviation. Although Dorothy is still active in the agency, her youngest son, Frank Kimmel, took over the day to day operations of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency in 2004. Frank brings with him 14,000 hours of flying experience including 8000+ as an ag pilot. Frank also has his own pedigree of accomplishments — Kenny & Michael Christmas, Christmas Flying Service, SHELBY, MISSISSIPPI including , 1992 John Horne Memorial Safety award (NAAA), Novartis Leadership training delegate – 1998, NAAA Related Service Award – 2008, Arkansas (AAAA) Outstanding Service Award 2008, and the MAAA Allied Industry Associate of the year 2010. In addition to the ag association awards, Frank was elected by his aviation insurance peers to serve on the Aviation Insurance Association (AIA) Board of Directors in 2005. He served as the Director of the Domestic Agents and Brokers Division until he was elected Vice President of the AIA in 2009 and then AIA President for 2011 – 2012. As you can see, it is true when their ads say, “When you need a respected voice to work for you, “The Kimmel’s Have You Covered”!”

NAAA General Session:

Generational diversity in our workforce and the agricultural aviation industry Presented by Shira Harrington With three generations currently in the workforce, generational differences will continue to manifest in different perceptions of work ethic, communication, work-life balance, technology, and career advancement, just to name a few. Furthermore, as the agricultural aviation sector continues to age, the industry must consider ways to recruit and retain the next generation of aviators. This

General Session will include case studies specific to the agricultural aviation industry. Shira Harrington, founder and president of Purposeful Hire, Inc. and Fortune 100 consultant and staff trainer, and is a keynote presenter on managing the multigenerational workforce. She brings her extensive research and her unique, ‘real world’ perspective of the world at work to bridge the perceived gaps between the generations. Shira has presented her findings to numerous associations and was the keynote presenter at the Agricultural Retailers Association’s annual conference in 2009. She has been published in the monthly

magazine of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, was profiled in the Washington Business Journal and is a contributing author to Motivating the Millennial Knowledge Worker. You will leave the General Session with a better understanding of how to communicate across the many different generations working in the ag aviation industry today. The General Session is the educational anchor on the second day of the convention, and this year’s session is one that every applicator ought to attend. Co-Sponsored by Syngenta, Ag Container Recycling Council and AIG.

Kawak Aviation

Kawak adds the new T3N “Slim” to its line of throttle quadrants Since the introduction of the Kawak’s T3 throttle quadrant for the Air Tractor 502, 602, 802 and Thrush aircraft, numerous operators have requested a slimmed down version of the popular quadrant for their 402s and 504s. These aircraft along with others such as the B model Ag Cat have a limited envelope between the dump handle and the quadrant. The quadrant offers all of the features of the original T3 including the “Safelock” gate to prevent the propeller from inadvertently coming out of feather all while being built with a narrower profile. The quadrant also incorporates a heavier power lever for more lateral stiffness. The canted in power lever also addresses the issue of hand clearance between the lever and the cabin wall on the Air Tractor 504.

Kawak has been building throttle quadrants for TPE331 powered aircraft since 1994 and most recently Pratt & Whitney PT6 and General Electric H80 powered aircraft. The next evolution of the Kawak quadrant will be a replacement for those on radial engine powered aircraft most of which are using World War II vintage units. Kawak has been serving the agricultural aviation community since 1993 providing an array of FAA approved products that include propulsion systems, hydraulic driven spray systems, and other accessories that solve problems, and make the aerial applicator more efficient and profitable.

Air Tractor

40 years of non-stop production at Air Tractor LOUISVILLE, KY – Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch says the company plans a big celebration of its 40th anniversary during the 2014 National Agricultural Aviation Association Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. “This year marks our 40th year of continuous production of Air Tractor aircraft and our collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada. Ag operators have relied on Air Tractor now for three generations because we’ve provided them with the stability and continuity of an aircraft platform that performs reliably day after day, year after year.” Since production began in 1974, Air Tractor has become the world’s most popular ag plane, delivering more than 2,500 aircraft powered by the legendary Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turbine engines. “There’s simply no other engine that can approach the PT6 in terms of performance, reliability and worldwide support,” says Hirsch. “Air Tractor and Pratt & Whitney deliver a performanceto-value advantage that’s unmatched.” The company reports that it has built and delivered more than 1,000 of the 502-series aircraft, 600 of the 800-series aircraft, 250 of the 600-series aircraft and more than 1,300 of the 300/400-series aircraft during the past four decades. “Those numbers tell a simple story: You can depend on Air Tractor. We’re with you all the way.” Hirsch adds. Early Air Tractor aircraft were powered by Pratt & Whitney R985 and R1340 radial engines. In December of 1979, Air Tractor’s first PT6-powered airplane, the AT400, was test flown. “Today, with the exception of maybe one or two radial engine AT401B airplanes that we produce for customers, all Air Tractor aircraft have the PT6A. Our airframe and the PT6A work well together.

It works well for our customers, too. We have customers who started with us in the 1970s whose grandsons are now flying Air Tractors.” At last year’s NAAA Convention, Air Tractor announced a special extended warranty program for PT6A series engines and Air Tractor airframes. The program has been popular with Air Tractor customers and is still in effect, reports Hirsch. The program consists of a full warranty on the airframe for 1 year or 500 hours, plus 2 years or 1,000 hours on major structural components. Air Tractor coupled its airframe warranty with an extended PT6A engine warranty of 2,500 hours or 5 years. Pratt & Whitney announced that their PT6A extended warranty will continue for the first six months of 2015. In a related development, Pratt & Whitney Canada announced it has extended the PT6A-34AG engine TBO to 4,000 hours. The AT-502B, AT-504 and some AT402B Air Tractor aircraft are equipped with the 750-HP -34 AG engine. “This certainly points to innovation in design and material technologies that our customers have come to expect from Pratt & Whitney PT6A series engines,” notes Hirsch. Hirsch also hinted at new collaborations in the offing. “We continue working with Pratt & Whitney Canada to find new ways to improve the performance, economy and value of our aircraft. We know that every ag operator has a sweet spot where his operation and equipment are most profitable, or he wants to move into a new range of productivity. We are working with Pratt & Whitney Canada to provide airframe and engine combinations

about At its Olney Texas manufacturing facilities, Air Tractor produces a line of eight aircraft that includes 400, 500, 600 and 800-gallon capacity planes powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. They are used for agricultural purposes, fire fighting, narcotic crop eradication, fuel-hauling, fighting locust plagues, military strike/ reconnaissance, and cleaning up oil spills in coastal waters. From North, South and Central America, to Australia, Indonesia and China to Spain, Italy, Croatia and Africa, Air Tractor aircraft can be found in more than 30 countries around the world and are supported by a global network of Air Tractor dealers.

Pickett Equipment

The best chewing-out I ever received was from an aerial applicator The following is a recounting of events between Mike Jones of Mike Jones Flying Service in Epps, LA and Bill Everett of Pickett Equipment. We thank Mike for his permission to use his name.

have a bone to pick with you,” Mike said.

Having used the traditional 2” Flomax 8 for years, Mike talked with me at the annual state conventions about the 3” Flomax with the 5-vane high speed impeller that Pickett and Flomax developed for aerial applicators. He’d ask the price, but never ordered one.

Confused, I said, “I’m sorry; I’m not following you.”

“Is there something wrong with the pump,” I asked. “No, Bill,” he said. “What’s wrong is you!”

A few years ago, almost on impulse he said, “I want to take that unit home.”

Before I could say more, he continued, still agitated “I save at least a minute and a half loading; that’s $5.00 in fuel every time I load, not to mention reducing the wasted time on my turbine and my prop. I load several hundred times a year, Bill. That adds up quickly; this is real money.”

Months later, I was driving near his area and stopped in to see him. I saw that he’d put the unit into service. Although I missed him, I left a note.

He continued, “I’m a small operator: one airplane, me, and a loader man. That’s it. I also found that at the end of the day, we’re not as tired.”

The next day, my phone rang with one irate aerial applicator on the other end. “Bill, sorry I missed you. I

Feeling a little better, I asked, “Why are you upset, Mike?”

“Because of all the years I didn’t have this unit. Because you never told me this pump would do these things for me! Bill, in all the years I’ve ordered equipment from you, why didn’t you tell me that the big unit would make me money and leave me less tired at the end of the day?” “Bill,” he said,“I truly wish you had made me understand years ago what this pump would do for me.” He was right; a day in the busy season can be stressful. Loading fuel or spray solution is an interruption of something else that is productive. Saved minutes, just like saved dollars, can be spent on getting new customers or enjoying the time you have with the best asset of all -- family. Pickett, like most aerial applicator operations, is a family business. It is our pleasure to help meet your equipment needs. That’s why we give you our cell phone numbers. We are here to serve you. Aviation Specialties Unlimited Night Vision Goggles improve ag operators’ bottom line and safety BOISE, ID—Flying at night and spraying to protect and nourish crops is not a new concept in the world of ag air aviation, but the integration of Night Vision Goggles (NVG) is making it more efficient by potentially expanding hours of operation, reducing operating expenses, and increasing safety. Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU), has pioneered the use of NVG in the agriculture business by introducing the first FAA approved STCs into the market. Bruce Hubler, President of Valley Air Services, was among the early adopters of NVG in the industry. ASU modified three of Hubler’s aircraft, including two Thrush and one Dromader models, and sold Hubler his first set of goggles.

62E

agairupdate.com

“Flying NVG reduces a pilots workload which means the hours he’s out there, he’s going to work more efficiently, feel more confident, comfortable, and less stressed,” said Hubler. “Flying on a very dark night, you can be more proficient in your turns, and get the same job done faster, burning less fuel than you can without flying NVG. In a short time, the increased productivity and fuel savings offset the expense of purchasing the goggles and cockpit modification.“They basically paid for themselves during my first season flying with them.” While flying at night using goggles has the potential to reduce overhead costs, there is another very important value added benefit to operators; increased safety. Flying under NVG gives pilots close to daytime vision. Goggles

help to identify obstacles like wires, trees and other obstructions that can become hazardous even during daytime operations. “When you increase your visual acuity, you actually increase the cues that add depth perception at night,” states Hubler. “I’ve done it in the military, and now I’ve done it as a civilian. Both times, once you begin flying with goggles, there’s no going back. It’s just too good of an experience.” To schedule a demonstration while at NAAA booth 601, contact Mike Oster at moster@asu-nvg.com or call 844-ASU-INFO/844-278-4636 or stop by.

Ag-Tips

Ag-Tip Winglets are being re-engineered

AG-TIP winglets do not affect the FAA certified fatigue lives of the Air Tractor 301,400 series, Thrush and Cessna installations. AG-TIPS are also in the process of being certified for the new Thrush H80. Winglet technology for agricultural aircraft provides several benefits. Winglets diffuse wingtip vortices. Independent studies show that the AG-TIPS installation reduces drag, reduces the impact on spray particles for a wider swath, and with the proper spray system set-up reduces drift. AG-TIPS winglets are STC’d for most models of Air Tractor, Thrush, and Cessna agricultural aircraft. Production has started, so get your set ordered today in order to enjoy the benefits for next season.

Buying a Rolex

Your season was long. You worked hard.

You deserve it.

by Ben Wade It is hard to justify the cost of a Rolex watch, solely because it is a watch. I don’t know that you can. I tell my wife, it is not a watch. It is a very nice bracelet that just happens to give the time. It is even more difficult to justify buying a brand new Rolex. These watches, not unlike the turbine ag-aircraft engine, just keep on keeping on. They should. However, a person can save a significant amount of money buying a used Rolex; sometimes half the cost of new. Even a new one becomes a used one the day it is worn. But, buying a used Rolex can be testy. First, is it really a Rolex or some knock-off from Paraguay? When was the last time it was serviced and does it have a warranty? Aside the apparent need for the used Rolex to look new, it has to have a warranty and come from a reputable jeweler.

“Not affiliated with Rolex USA”

This is Arnold’s Jewelers’ 30th year in business selling used Rolexes. All used Rolexes from our store have been carefully inspected for authenticity and serviced with a full one year warranty. Some, even come with a two-year warranty. And, all have a buy-back offer. You have just finished up your season. It was long and hard. You deserve to reward yourself. A used Rolex from Arnold’s Jewelers can fulfill that longtime dream of owning a master timepiece, or upgrading the Rolex you own now. You can buy with confidence knowing not only did you save money, but that you are getting what you paid for. Give Ben Wade at Arnold’s Jewelers a call at 727-586-0414, or send an email to ben@ arnoldjewelers.com. Be sure to say AgAir Update sent you and you are asking about the Ag-Pilot Special.

Keeping Ag Cats in the air 2015 looks to be a monumental year as Hershey Flying Service is set to break ground on a new 22,000 square foot facility in David City, Nebraska. This is just another step in the process of upgrading the infrastructure and capabilities of the world’s leader in Ag Cat parts and service. This new facility located within easy driving distance of Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska will afford us the opportunity to draw from a large pool of aviation technicians to increase our efficiency and throughput of parts and service. Hershey has long been known for keeping Ag Cats in the air, but we are now beginning to branch out to other makes and models of ag planes. Our latest STC, “Storm Cutters” for Air Tractors, made their way onto the scene this past summer. Storm Cutters are the newest advancement in wire cutter technology. The blade is heat treated by a special process that case hardens the blade but still allows it to flex with the gear. Spacer blocks have been positioned along the blade to increase strength and stabilize the blade in case of a strike. Adel clamps positioned along the trailing edge of the landing gear secure the brake line and do away with the standard black zip ties currently used. Storm Cutters are now available and in stock for the 500 series Air Tractors, and we are currently taking orders for every other model of Air Tractor from the 300-800 series. This is yet another advancement in safety for the ag industry. Hershey Flying Service truly is “Everything Ag Cat.....and more.”

Insero

Insero Roadshow If you are not keeping up with the latest features and trends in technology, you may be missing opportunities and falling behind your competition. You may not be feeling any pain today but technology has a way of moving so quickly that you may find yourself behind the learning curve in the blink of an eye. But don’t panic, this does not mean you need to be able to use your watch to pay for groceries or check-in with friends using Foursquare’s Swarm App. However, becoming informed about the latest additions to the technology that you use in your business can make the difference between what you can provide to your customers vs what your competitor provides.

throughout the trip. Insero will also hold a fly-in in west Texas at Levelland on Nov 21st. The fly-in will feature a training session on the G4, Connectivity, IntelliFlow and Bantam software.

Insero Job #1 – Support

In between the state shows, Anthony Fay will be visiting with customers throughout the countryside. If you would like to get a better understanding of Satloc systems, or if you would like help with specific features of the system, including connecting the system through Wi-Fi or over the internet, contact Anthony Fay at 480285-4367. The goal of the Insero Roadshow is to bring support to customers’ doorsteps.

The key to understanding and successfully integrating new technology into your business is getting good training and support. This is especially true of GPS Guidance Systems and the software and peripheral equipment that can be used with them to back your aerial application business. Coming this fall and winter, Insero looks to bring comprehensive training and support for all of this, straight to customers’ backyards. Launched in late in October, Insero’s Roadshow will begin its travels to 21 events – mostly state and the national shows in North America. Insero will be driving across the country with new systems and parts available upon customer request. On-site repair services, training or upgrades can be arranged as well by contacting Insero over the next few months. The tour will continue through March and will consist of a string of presentations at shows and customer visits

68E

agairupdate.com

Also during the winter, Insero will host two training seminars in Tempe, Arizona. These all-day events will be reminiscent of the training sessions that were held in Arizona years ago when Satloc was working with pilots each month to increase the knowledge base of the general user. They will feature hands-on training with Satloc simulation software and a chance to work oneon-one with the trainers.

Insero – What do they do? Insero is a distributor for Satloc, selling new systems and repairing any Satloc component – new or old. With new equipment, Insero is servicing Bantams, G4s and IntelliFlows – repairing components or updating systems to the latest firmware and software. Insero recommends that customers get their CPUs (from any and all systems) to re-image their hard drives before each season. This refreshes the hard drive and rids the system of any issues that could be building in an operating system after being used for extended periods

1005 Booth

of time. It also ensures that you are using the latest software. It’s the best way to start each season knowing you have what you need to begin your business year. Insero also workshops Legacy systems and has the ability to repair aging units such as the M3. As a promotion, through the winter of 2015, Insero will take any system in for a free evaluation. Contact Insero to discuss availability of hard-to-find M3 motherboards and other M3 components. And as a reminder, all M3 CPUs can be upgraded to work from a USB stick instead of a PCMCIA Card or Compact Flash card.

Help with Software, Peripherals and Upgrades Insero can work with you on a myriad of software items including any maps needed for variable rate applications. Insero recently added the ability to create maps (Pmaps) for dry applications. Send in any Variable Rate Shape file and it can be converted into a Pmap ready for use in the G4 or M3. In addition, Insero can help with any of your file conversion needs. Create or convert to kml (for Google Earth), Shape, Pmaps and more. Contact Insero for conversion utilities or to setup a webinar to walk a person or group through any of the software processes. Insero can also help you use and connect to web-based software platforms and interface to a host of peripheral devices. Everything from the web-based platforms of HQ, AgSync or FlightPlanOnline or even something as simple as DropBox or MapStar. Have you ever wanted to run a camera in-flight? Connect a camera to the G4 and take pics or video while you fly. With other hardware, you can connect a laser altimeter, or the AIMMS-30 onboard wind measurement and meteorological data system or even an engine trend monitor. For recording, most of this information can be saved as part of the log for future review. If technology is a weakness for you, then work with Insero to turn that weakness into a strength. With the right help, technology can be a serious weapon in your company’s arsenal. To hear about the latest and greatest features in GPS, or if you simply want to install or learn about a particular software, let Insero support you in your everyday environment. Only you know the best decisions for your company – let Insero help give you the information you need to make the most informed decision.

Turbine Installation, LLC

Turbine Installation received final FAA STC approval for the installation of the Honeywell TPE331-14GR engine in the Air Tractor AT-802 airframe in June 2014 bringing AT-802 operators the ability to optimize the efficiency of this aircraft. This efficiency is coming in the form of lower fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs and the ability to haul a full hopper in all conditions. The prototype AT802-14 has been in service with the national S.E.A.T. program providing unparalleled performance in the 800 gallon class. With the addition of the second TPE331-14GR powered aircraft to the firefighting fleet it continues to prove the benefits and performance of this powerplant.

Precision agriculture – Are you ready? “Precision Agriculture” is a prominent buzzword in the industry today as just about every farming practice has some reference to precision. As seen at this year’s InfoAg conference in St. Louis, technology has become commonplace in all aspects of farming. Today’s growers are adopting technology at an ever increasing rate because it is providing them with tangible results in the form of greater efficiency, higher yields, and substantive economic returns. Another driving force towards technology is a term that you routinely hear is “Sustainability”. Sustainability practices are being integrated into policies and business plans across government and suppliers of consumer products. Many companies like Walmart and Costco are demanding that every aspect of their supply chain meet their sustainability goals. What’s that got to do with your operation? It means that growers are going to demand that your aircraft have comparable precision application capabilities to that of a ground rig. Applications must be made with exactly the right amount of material in the right location and have all the data logging capabilities to feed into a grower’s crop management system. Prescription applications will be the norm. The tangible result for the grower as has been demonstrated with ground rigs, is increased and more consistent yields, and in many cases, reduced material costs. The efficient use of ag chemicals no matter what the application method will be essential in meeting both the customer and the public’s sustainability expectations. In the early 1990s when GPS guidance systems were still in their infancy, Kawak Aviation Technologies recognized the potential to combine the benefits of hydraulics with GPS control. Kawak Aviation has designed and supplied FAA approved hydraulic systems for 23 years supported by a background in the industrial hydraulic business for over 35 years. After receiving FAA approval in 2002 for an engine driven hydraulic system on the AT 802, Kawak along with Air Repair, Satloc, Jensen Aircraft Services, and a group of progressive minded California and Mississippi aerial applicators, combined the hydraulic driven chemical

72E

agairupdate.com

system with liquid flow control, GPS, and prescription mapping. The system ultimately was tested on a USDA Air Tractor 402 and was shown to provide excellent results with regards to accuracy and speed of rate changes utilizing a prescription map. In 2004, Air Repair and Kawak began a collaborative effort to develop a system that would give applicators all of the benefits of hydraulic control at a lower price point by utilizing an electro/hydraulic power unit. The system was designed primarily for dry flow control operation however the intention was to have a single power unit that could power not only the gate box, but boom valve, hopper door, flap system or any combination as well. A modular unit with the ability to have additional functions layered on depending on applicator preference.

“Precision Agriculture” is a prominent buzzword in the industry today as just about every farming practice has some reference to precision. The system has demonstrated 10 years of successful field proven service and during that time Air Repair and Kawak have continued to add capabilities as new technology has become available. The latest gate box control features a new Parker touch screen display with advanced software developed by Air Repair for the Parker control. The software was designed for total compatibility with the Satloc G4 system in order to provide both constant and variable rate functions for dry flow control. The control provides more than just simple repeatability of the gate box opening. A popular feature is the one touch gate cleanout. This allows momentary opening of the gate in order to clear a clump of material or in the case of liquid, drop as

little as 5 gallons and immediately return to the set gate opening. The control operates in conjunction with the gate actuating cylinder that contains an integral position feedback sensor or what has been generically referred to a as a “Smart Cylinder”. Kawak designed a smart cylinder retrofit for the 10” gate in 2003 to replace the low resolution encoder that was standard on the original 10” Transland gate. Kawak/ ARI also offers the only smart cylinder system for 5” gates which utilizes the same hardware and control as its 10” counterpart. Historically, the relationship between Kawak and Air Repair has been Kawak handling the engineering, FAA certification, and manufacturing of the hydraulic system components. Air Repair has contributed design and installation details along with software and control development. Additionally, Air Repair has been the primary sales outlet and provided installation services. Gate systems will now also be available through Kawak and its distributors which will provide customers with a comprehensive network for new systems, parts, installations, and technical support. Air Repair and Kawak’s goal is to provide applicators with an STC’d gate box system that offers the most features, best technology, best support, and be the best investment you can make on your aircraft. When you say, “There’s just not much call for prescription applications in my area”, you better finish the sentence with “yet”. Precision application equipment on an ag aircraft will be as routine as GPS and turbine engines (remember how many naysayers there were with those?). If you’re not doing prescription work today then take advantage of the constant flow capabilities to give your customer the best job possible. The time you spend agonizing over equipping your aircraft with the most technologically advanced application system will be the time your competitor is already out flying your customer’s fields. Make the decision to be a leader in the industry, not a follower!”

Connecting rural and urban America by sharing the positive story of production agriculture has been the mission of Trent Loos since he walked into a radio station in Spearfish, SD in 2000 and asked to do his own program. That dream of this sixth generation United States farmer, often touted as an agricultural activist, came true on January 8, 2001 when “Loos Tales” aired on radio station KMZU in Missouri. Today, 3 million listeners on nearly 100 radio stations in 19 states hear the show every day, along with many who listen online worldwide. In addition to “Loos Tales”, Trent now hosts and produces a daily, one-hour radio program entitled “Rural Route,” “Illinois Truth Be Told”, “Dakota Trails and Tales” and “Colorado Trails and Tales,” which are available at his website www.LoosTales.com. Trent travels the globe to unearth stories about the people involved in the many different facets of production agriculture and to spread the good word about food producers. In 2013, Trent traveled to 22 different states, Ireland and Canada to share his passion for an industry he truly believes in. He encourages producers to stand up and proudly tell consumers about life on their operations. He utilizes modern technologies to share

Trent Loos his experiences abroad and to “spread the good word” about this age-old and “essential to life” industry with his radio and web audience. In 2008, Trent was recognized by West Quest as the “Voice of Rural America.” Written Loos Tales columns are printed weekly in the High Plains Journal and reprinted in countless other publications. He enjoys volunteering when he can with the All-American Beef Battalion. Trent was raised on a diversified farm near Quincy, IL and got his start in swine production with a runt pig at the age of five. He and his father expanded their operation to a purebred seedstock company that supplied boars and gilts to producers nationwide. Along the way, he earned an American Farmer Degree in FFA and won numerous awards at state and national swine shows. In 1990, Trent expanded his operation to include purebred Limousin and Angus cattle. Quarterhorses were added to the mix in the late ‘90’s, meat goats came to the ranch in 2008 and now the family is returning to its pigrearing roots with 40 sows. Last year they sold prize-winning show pigs into 12 different states. Trent and his wife Kelli enjoy living on the ranch in central Nebraska with their daughters, Libbi, Lindsi and Landri. Their adventures as a family include traveling, training and riding horses, youth sports, 4-H and archery. Sponsored by BASF.

Covington Aircraft Engines

Covington Aircraft’s Tunica, Mississippi location expands Since 1972, Covington Aircraft has worked very hard maintaining their four core values of integrity, dependability, affordability and quality service. Quality Service is one attribute that Covington is constantly monitoring and has always taken very seriously. Aaron Abbott, Covington’s Executive Vice President, says, “Just because we think we’re serving the customers’ needs doesn’t always make it true. We depend on our customers to tell us whether we’re making the grade or not. As we’ve traveled to the many ag shows, a repeated comment has surfaced over the last few years. We wish you were more accessible and closer to us along the Mississippi River Delta.” Covingtons’ new Tunica Mississippi location is an answer to those customer requests. Covington’s desire is to provide the same quality service customers have grown accustomed to having at the Covington Oklahoma location. Located just minutes from Memphis, their new state of the art facility will fulfill what their “Delta” customers are looking for.

Dependable, quality service close to home. Just out of Class B airspace on the new Tunica airport, Covington will be centrally located in the Mississippi Delta and able to provide expedited service to ag and corporate customers in the region. “Our intentions in Tunica are to support our customers with rental power sections, engines and props,” says Luke Abbott, Covington Aircraft Engines President and Operations Manager of the Tunica location. “Whether a job requires the use of our airborne Mobile Response Team, one of our Mobile Response Team trucks, or our Tunica fly-in facility, we will only be minutes away from supporting a customer that needs assistance. We also intend to inventory the accessories, parts and products that our customers may need. Whether you fly into our Tunica hangar or we come to yours, you will be able to depend on our Tunica crew and you can expect the same great service you have received from Covington Aircraft over the past 40 years. Covington will be Covington whether we are answering the phone in the ‘Delta’ or in Oklahoma. You will deal with the same people you are used to dealing with in Oklahoma.

My family has relocated to the Tunica area and more Covington folks are on the way. We are serious about working and living here in the Delta, close to our customers.” The Tunica location is capable of taking care of your needs whether it’s an older PT6A-20 or the new PT6A-67F or even a radial engine. David Hamilton, Covington’s VP of sales says: “This isn’t an R & I shop solely depending on our facility in Oklahoma to carry the mechanical and technical load. In our newly expanded shop-space. we are equipped and ready to perform complete hot sections and power sections. We’ve added balancing equipment, lathes, and enhanced our NDT capabilities.” With Covington’s extensive rental pool, Pratt & Whitney Canada warranty support, and new or overhauled parts and engines, Covington is proud to be a part of what’s going on in the Mississippi Delta. The new L7 lightbar and 7” screen Satloc released the new L7 Lightbar in 2013. Both the Satloc G4 and Satloc Bantam are now offering the L7 as a standard lightbar. When the L7 is coupled with the G4, it features four LED displays with over 20 different options to view in each window. The high bright LEDs are the brightest LEDs that Satloc has ever used in a lightbar. The L7 now offers an additional set of LEDs that can be used with a G4 for distance to a boundary edge, mark or waypoint. LiteStar IIs also include the L7 as the standard lightbar, and all M3s can upgrade to the L7 Lightbar. Bantams, M3s and LiteStar IIs run in legacy mode with a 2-window display only. The L7 is completely waterpoof.

existing 9” G4 screen. Like the G4 screen, it has a high brightness feature for clear visibility in bright sunlight, and it allows low dimming for night flying.

Connectivity with G4 and HQ The Satloc G4 includes a connectivity kit and a subscription to HQ, the AgJunction web-based program designed for the aerial application industry. HQ can be run on a tablet PC, office computer or mobile device. The connectivity kit allows an operation to move data quickly and save time. It includes both a Wi-Fi and a cell-based modem, a router with amplifier, a video camera and an audio modem to connect a headset through the G4.

New 7” Screen At the NAAA convention in Dec 2014, Satloc will release a custom 7” touch screen that can be used with the Bantam or G4. Its overall length and width dimensions are the same as the current 7” Bantam screen, but the new screen is designed by Satloc and modeled after the

HQ is a web-based program for viewing aircraft and field data over Google Earth or Bing Maps. With HQ, aircraft can be tracked in real-time, log files can be stored and reviewed, job files can be created and the G4 can be accessed through remote access. Weather data can be accessed through HQ and locations can be pinpointed through Lat/Lon searches or through entry of legal descriptions (Section/Township/Range). Spray Data reports and As-Applied maps can be generated and emailed straight from HQ. The AgJunction Prescription Map generator is being implemented into the HQ program and will be available for the 2015 season. It allows for the creation of both liquid and dry-based prescription maps for variable rate applications. Existing Shape files can also be converted

into Satloc prescription maps.

Wi-Fi Data Movement Every G4 is equipped with a Wi-Fi modem and router with amplifying antenna to allow logs and jobs to be synced with an office computer or tablet PC. The modem can be used to automatically move data from the aircraft to the office (or mobile device) without having to manually transfer through a USB stick.

Cell-based modem A cell-based modem can be used with the G4 in order to upload and download data in real-time. HQ can be used to send Job files on-the-fly to an aircraft or multiple aircraft. Job files are sent to specific G4s and stored in the cloud until downloading with a button push on the G4. Job files can be created and stored in HQ. Log files are associated with stored Job files for printing and emailing reports.

Remote Access A G4 can be accessed in real time from any remote computer through HQ. Through HQ, the G4 can be emulated on a remote computer screen (or mobile device) when the G4 is connected with a cell-based modem. This allows the pilot to pass access to another location so buttons can be activated remotely. This can be used for training and/or trouble-shooting.
