Thrush Aircraft

A Message from Thrush Aircraft It’s hard to believe another year has gone by but, in just a few weeks, the industry will be headed to Reno for NAAA 2013, and we’ll be looking forward to seeing you at what promises to be an outstanding show. The folks at AgAir Update allow us space in this special issue each year to tell you just about anything we want about our company and our products. But, as we’ve mentioned before, we think a much better use of your attention and your time would be to talk about the things happening in our business right now, that will have positive and lasting affects on you, and the work that you do. You see, here at Thrush, we’ve always embraced the rule that: “Leaders should promote their category, rather than just their products” and it’s something we take very seriously. To accomplish this in 2013, we focused on two things: Exposing more people outside our industry to the benefits agricultural aviation brings to our world as well as to the technology behind it – and also doing something meaningful about the coming pilot shortage we anticipate in our industry. This year, to expose more people to ag aviation in a positive and effective way, we took our aircraft to the largest aviation gathering in the world – EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh. Seven days. More than 500,000 people. And a celebratory atmosphere surrounding aviation that’s unmatched anywhere in the world. And we didn’t just sit there quietly once we arrived. We performed in the airshow – the first time ever for an agricultural airplane to do so – bringing ag aviation up close to hundreds of thousands of people in a spectacular way. Our pilot, Terry Humphrey, put our new Thrush 510G through its paces on two different days – using a demonstration routine developed specifically for Oshkosh. You should have heard the applause and seen the thumbs up from virtually everyone in the crowd – from astronauts to ten-year olds – as they truly enjoyed seeing a real ag airplane demonstrating what real ag airplanes do, complemented by a narration from the show’s announcers that was carefully crafted to promote the positive effect our industry has in everyone’s life.

Our second focus this year was to pay more than just lip service to the growing shortage of qualified ag pilots we see in the world, brought about not only by the increasing retirements of older pilots, but also by the growing number of ag aircraft being built – thanks to ever-increasing evidence of their superiority to ground-based applicators. Simply put, we believe our industry will need more bright, young, well-trained pilots – and sooner rather than later. The first step for us in this direction was to create a scholarship program in concert with a terrific organization called Women in Aviation. With over 9,000 members, this group helps promote flying careers for both women and men – and together this year we launched the Thrush Agricultural Aviation Scholarship, which will award $10,000 to a winning candidate to be used to further their training and flying of agricultural aircraft. The scholarship will be awarded in March, and we could not be more excited to be a part of it. Also this year, we’ve begun development of a partnership with a Georgia state college to support a terrific new education program they have in the works. The program will allow students to obtain a degree that combines business, aviation and agricultural studies while also taking pilot training – from a private rating all the way up through commercial and ATP – all with the goal of stimulating new interest in agricultural flying as a career. When it’s ready, we believe this curriculum will be something every ag pilot will be proud of. Oshkosh, scholarships, college programs – it all may seem a long way away from the business of selling airplanes. But to us, it’s actually more important. Because if we can help agricultural aviation become more accepted, and help more people participate in it, we’re ensuring our industry’s future for generations to come. And to us, that’s our most important mission – and it’s one we intend to continue to accomplish in interesting ways for many years to come. I hope you’ll join us.

Dealt a winning hand Back in Reno again, the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s (NAAA) annual convention and exhibition will be held December 9-12, 2013. The Welcome Reception will be Monday night with the exhibit hall open on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Farewell Banquet Thursday night. As always, the NAAA promises and delivers an excellent venue for ag-pilots worldwide to network, educate and have an all-around good time. Reading the pages of AgAir Update’s Show Guide for the NAAA trade show will let you know what to do, where to go and when to do it. For those of you not yet registered, everything you need to know about how to do that can be found here. The purpose of AgAir Update’s Show Guide is primarily two-fold; promote attendance to the NAAA convention and better facilitate the time of those attending. When you read the Show Guide, you will see exhibitors’ ads featuring their products and services. In some cases, you will read a more detailed accounting of what you can expect when stopping by an exhibitor’s booth. You will also read about speakers, the program schedules for NAAA and WNAAA, as well as any other important events taking place this week. Reading AgAir Update’s Show Guide is an exercise in preparation. It will help you identify which sessions and receptions to attend and which exhibitors

should be at the top of your list to visit that will result in being dealt a winning hand. I hope you can make all the events NAAA has scheduled. I know having quality time with over 135 exhibitors can be a challenge. Planning with AgAir Update’s Show Guide will help you achieve that goal.

From the NAAA

Reap the benefits of NAAA’s 2013 convention Dec. 9–12 in Reno by Dana Ness, NAAA President, and Andrew Moore, NAAA Executive Director On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to NAAA’s 47th Annual Convention & Exposition Dec. 9–12. With access to more than two dozen education and training programs, 130+ exhibitors and 1,000+ attendees, you won’t find a better opportunity to stay up on the latest technology, products, techniques and trends impacting your business. This year NAAA is returning to one of our longtime convention destinations, Reno, Nev. Reno has always been a great location for pilots and exhibitors. Its convention center is blessed with ample show space, large trade show doors and close access to the Reno airport—three ingredients that work in aircraft exhibitors’ favor. It should come as no surprise, then, that seven aircraft will be on display at the NAAA Trade Show for attendees to explore and enjoy, but we are also hoping for a surprise appearance by a special celebrity aircraft. Stay tuned on that… The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino will serve as NAAA’s headquarters hotel, making it the place to see and be seen if you work in the aerial application industry. The last time we were in Reno was in 2009, and since then, the hotel has spent more than $6 million upgrading sleeping rooms and restaurants. With its central location, luxurious rooms and first-class amenities, the Silver Legacy has it all— including an 85,000-square-foot casino floor. NAAA’s room rate is $75 per night, but you’ll have to act fast—the cutoff date for NAAA’s room block is Nov. 6. Use the reservation code NAAA13 to obtain NAAA’s special group rate. To reserve your room, call 1-800-687-8733 or visit www.agaviation.org/ content/naaa-2013-hotel-registration-information.

The convention should get off to a stirring start at NAAA’s Kickoff Breakfast Dec. 9. You’ll hear the uplifting “Miracle on the Hudson” story from First Officer Jeff Skiles, co-pilot of the Jan. 15, 2009, U.S. Airways flight. Enjoy the breakfast buffet and hear the stories, lessons and scenarios from Jeff’s experiences in the cockpit. After the Kickoff Breakfast, the ASABE Technical Session will build on a new format that was introduced last year. Rather than focusing on specific research projects, members of ASABE’s presenters will address high-interest topics, exploring matters such as spray droplet size and classification, nozzle selection and operation, and spray deposition into the crop canopy using different nozzle systems and rates. Several states have granted CEUs for this session, including Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming. The theme of this year’s convention is “Ag Aviation: Agriculture’s Best Deal.” We strive to live up to that ideal by looking for new ways to make the convention better and better each year, and we feel that we have done just that with the addition of three exciting new sessions to our Thursday afternoon lineup. We are proud to present the first-ever NAAREF Safety Session, which will focus on the prevention of stall/spin accidents, and encourage all attendees, regardless of experience level, to stay for this session. Second, based on the success of our highly popular Compaass Rose sessions, we decided to try something new in Reno: speed mentoring! This fastpaced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots will consist of a series of 10-minute speed mentoring rounds led by experienced operators and pilots, insurance representatives and ag schools. NAAA’s “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session will begin right after the Dec. 12 Compaass Rose Session.

Lastly, we’re pleased to present our first session on unmanned aircraft. With agriculture seen as huge market for UAVs, for better or worse, drones could have a profound effect on aerial applicators. Come to this intriguing panel and find out from representatives of the UAV, academic and federal government communities how they see unmanned aircraft being used in agriculture and for other civilian purposes. In addition to our three new concurrent sessions, we have several oldies but goodies on the docket. NAAA’s allied industry companies will host more than 20 company and concurrent sessions covering topics such as chemicals, propulsion units, engine manufacturing, security, application technology and helicopters. For new and low-time pilots, two Compaass Rose Sessions will be held at the front (Dec. 8) and back end (Dec. 12) of the convention. Advocacy and public relations training is the focus of NAAA’s General Session on Dec. 10. Whether it’s dealing with customers, civilians or consumers, engaging the public is becoming a more and more important part of an aerial applicator’s job description. Believe it or not, you can accomplish almost as much good outside the cockpit as you can inside it by making a good impression, dispelling myths about the industry and educating people about all the benefits of agricultural aviation. That’s not always easy to do, which is why we hope you can join us for “Earning a Skeptical Public’s Trust: How to Make a Compelling Case for Agricultural Aviation and the Work You Do.” Two of agriculture’s best linguists will advise us on this subject: Steve Powell of Solum Consulting and Leonard Gianessi of the Crop Protection Research Institute.

Agricultural and Biological Engineers. As always, you can expect a science-based overview of the latest state-of-the-art aerial application research—from minimizing drift to maximizing efficacy. ASABE’s presenters will focus on practical uses for aerial applicators during their presentations. Some states grant CEUs for this session. Visit www.agaviation. org/content/ceu-information for more information.

Tuesday, Dec. 10 General Session: Earning a Skeptical Public’s Trust: How to Make a Compelling Case for Agricultural Aviation and the Work You Do: Did you know that fewer than 2% of Americans farm for a living today and only 17% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas? The farm is a long way off from the fork for 49 out of 50 Americans, which is why NAAA has made advocacy and public relations training the focus of the 2013 General Session. Two of agriculture’s best linguists will show you how to make a compelling case for all the good agricultural aviation does. Leonard Gianessi, Director of the Crop Protection Research Institute at the CropLife Foundation, and Steve Powell of Solum Consulting will expound on the valuable role aerial application plays in meeting global food production needs, and demonstrate how to share that message in a way that resonates with the public and aligns with their values. They will also provide tips for telling ag aviation’s story when being interviewed by the media. Everyone associated with the industry—from ag pilots and their spouses, to office and ground personnel, to allied industry representatives—will walk away with sound strategies for building a story to tell the public about the importance of the industry and the work you do. Trade Show (Tuesday & Wednesday): In NAAA’s 2012 post-convention survey, 71% of respondents identified the NAAA Trade Show as their favorite program. There’s a reason it’s the convention’s premier event. This year, the world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show will feature 130+ exhibitors from all facets of the agricultural aviation sector and seven different aircraft, including one potential surprise celebrity aircraft. Live Auction: On Tuesday evening, join NAAA for

the Live Auction and Reception. This annual auction has become a highlight of the NAAA Convention with top-notch industry items to bid on and an engaging auctioneer, Illinois operator Kevin Palmer. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the PT6 engine, Pratt & Whitney Canada is contributing a brand new PT6A-34AG turbine engine. For more information, including a sampling of current auction items, visit www.agaviation.org/content/ live-and-silent-auctions.

Wednesday, Dec. 13 Trade Show: The trade show continues from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to evaluate cutting-edge products and valuable services offered by NAAA’s allied companies.

Thursday, Dec. 12 Be sure to stay through Thursday afternoon, Dec. 12, to cash in on three exciting new professional growth opportunities! Safety Session: For the first time ever, NAAA and NAAREF are proud to present the NAAREF Safety Session. This hour-long safety program will focus on the elimination of stall/spin accidents. This is a must-attend event for all attendees, regardless of experience level. You can never learn enough about safety as an operator and pilot in the aerial application industry. Speed Mentoring: If you’ve been in the industry less than five years, don’t miss NAAA’s “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session immediately after the Dec. 12 Compaass Rose Session. Essentially, it’s a fastpaced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots designed to shed light on what an aerial applicator’s life is really like. A series of 10-minute speed mentoring rounds will be led by experienced operators and pilots, insurance representatives and ag schools. This is your chance to pose questions to industry experts in a smaller group setting than the Compaass Rose sessions and builds on that popular session. 2014 will mark the 65th anniversary of Hershey Flying Service being in business. Originally started in 1949 as an aerial application business, Hershey eventually decided to dedicate its resources entirely towards maintenance and repair of agricultural aircraft specifically the Ag Cat in 1974. Since that time Hershey has developed many STC modifications to the Ag Cat, along with holding numerous PMA replacement parts to support the fleet. Although Hershey Flying Service has earned the reputation as being the “Ag Cat people”, we are currently working towards supporting other models of agricultural aircraft with parts and maintenance. We just recently received PMA for Weatherly tail springs. To meet the demand of new quality parts Hershey is moving towards implementing a state of the art machine shop using CNC equipment. Hershey Flying Service truly is “Everything AgCat...and more.”

Ag-Nav

Booth

Ag-Nav making your next job... The AG-NAV INC. team invites you to visit us at Booth # 1201 during the 47th NAAA convention in Reno, NV. FREE GIS post-processing software will be available to all visitors. On-site training provided. This year, AG-NAV INC. is pleased to introduce the new and improved Guidance system “AGNAV GUIA PLATINUM”. This system is designed like no other Nav system without operational costs. The Guia Platinum operating system is based on the LINUX platform, thus many advantages and higher performance delivered to our customers. With the latest technologies in computer and data communications, the Guia Platinum is designed to bring you the following benefits: Making your next job easier: The Guia Platinum has resistive touch screen with feedback to your touch and remote control 5-way switch which make navigation easier than ever before. Intuitive screen and on line help allow you to select the right command and configuration for your navigation needs. Making your next job safer: The Guia Platinum includes the obstacle and power line warning feature, which warns you of incoming obstacles and power lines. Now you can fly with a peace of mind. Making your next job more accurate: The Guia Platinum has auto booms technology, which turns spray on and off automatically. No more worries about when to turn spray on and off. No more worries about spraying over exclusion zones. Making your next job more effective: The Guia Platinum is compatible with our optional flow and gate control devices. This ensures that you apply the amount you want no matter what speed you’re flying. Making your next job more comfortable: The Guia Platinum has 8.4” super bright screen which can display a moving map with the aircraft centered on screen; or aircraft moving on the map with Line up or North up depending on your preference. Georeferenced topo map background is available. If you work at night, just press a button to change the display from day time mode to night time mode. Optional NVG Navigation screen available. Keeping all companies that interact with your application connected: The Guia Platinum has built in Wi-Fi and 3G module, which allows your customers and/or contractors to send project and area files directly to your system. You can send emails and spray data in your system directly to your

18E

agairupdate.com

customers and contractors when job is done. We will be glad to show you other products and technologies from AG-NAV: The SPRAYVIEWW software has been very successful with helping our clients interface applied data to Google Earth KMZ and KML maps. During the 2013 season many customers used this software to get accurate maps and geo-referenced data for their applications by interfacing with Google Maps. With SPRAYVIEWW, data analysis is easy and reporting is better than with other more costly agriculture GIS software on the market. Software upgrades are FREE forever. The Auto ON/OFF BOOMS System is the technology that allows you to use geo-referenced maps with exclusion zones and such when doing an aerial application and you want automatic control of the spray system. This year we delivered a fully automatic on/off valve that reacts in a fraction of a second to the map’s information during the application. This allows for the pilot to just fly the lines and maintain the guidance line accuracy. This makes the Nav system fully automatic along with our automatic AG-FLOW control. The SMART BAR (Large & Small), BRIGHT BAR (Large & Small), PILOT INDICATOR hardware suits the requirements for fixed wing aircraft and helicopters; Light weight and aerodynamically designed to fit any type of aerial application aircraft. All models will be on display at Booth # 1201. When you visit us at our booth, we will have several systems on display for you to interact with, such as the popular AG-NAV GUIA “GOLD” model for aerial application. The AG-NAV GUIA is a DGPS navigation system designed to meet and exceed specific requirements for guidance in aerial applications. Features such as the USB ports allows for fast uploading and downloading of files, saving you time and money. One USB stick can store data for a whole season, making the AG-NAV GUIA very safe and reliable. No data cards, no PCMCIA, no memory cards to carry or lose, just a plain USB key will do the trick. With the AG-NAV GUIA, your data stays in the hard drive until you decide otherwise. The NAV SYSTEM - The operating system for the AG-NAV GUIA allows pilots to navigate through menus with relative ease. It runs on LINUX platform; there are no attacks from viruses most common found in Windows operating systems. The AG-NAV GUIA uses features with full data logging that has

proven user-friendly and successful in agricultural, forestry, geophysics, mosquito control and many other airborne applications. The FLIGHTMASTER and Accuair navigation systems have been designed to meet mosquito control aerial application specific requirements in the battle against field infestation and forest pest control respectively. These systems carry an on-board weather station and provide real-time information on wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, temperature and barometric pressure. Data is updated on every pass and displayed on a moving map during navigation. FLIGHTMASTER and Accuair provide the pilot with swath, directional guidance and other navigational information required to carry out precise offset drift aerial applications. The AG-FLOW automatic flow control system has been designed to ensure a steady distribution of application rates by automatically adjusting its flow. This system consists of a flow meter or sensor, a valve and DC motor to adjust the valve position, and a controller box. The flow rate is adjusted automatically by the valve position; thus, controlling the required flow to the spray booms. The controller box is a state-of-the-art computer which has serial ports and CAN bus technology used for communications with other systems. The simple and easy installation process guarantees that the AG-FLOW is ready to use right after installation as calibration is very fast and effective. The AG-FLOW is also capable of variable rate applications. The AG-FLOW 1 is the only one you need for automatic flow control, working as a standalone unit the system performs same as the Ag-Flow (above) but without the need of a guidance system. Data is recorded at all times and can be easily viewed with Navvieww Software. Please register with us at www.agnav.com/ NAAA2013 for a FREE Q&A session. This session will take place on December 09 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. For more information on the above systems and other AG-NAV products such as FIRE-NAV, TRAXNAV, GROUND-NAV, LI-NAV and PHOTO-NAV, please visit us at NAAA BOOTH # 1201 or contact us today at 1-800-99 AGNAV (24628). Tractor With 2013 milestones in the books, Air Tractor looks ahead Booth

If this year was an indication, 2014 is set to be another banner year for Air Tractor, the world’s leading manufacturer of aerial application and firefighting aircraft. 2013 was marked by several historic milestones for the Olney, Texas company. In April, its 500th aircraft in the AT-802 series—the company’s hugely popular 800-gallon ag and firefighting aircraft— rolled off the production line, followed in mid-July by the 3,000th Air Tractor, an AT-502B. Last year Air Tractor produced and sold 180 aircraft, a company record, and one that will most likely be broken again in 2013. “All of our investments during the past several years to increase production, manufacturing quality and efficiency are paying off now,” says company president Jim Hirsch. “We are on track to produce 182 aircraft by the end of the December.” Hirsch remarked that Air Tractor has come a long way since it was founded in 1971 by Leland Snow, the ag aviation legend who passed away in 2011. “In 1975 we delivered 20 airplanes. That doesn’t sound like many now, but it was a real accomplishment then. Hirsch adds, “Today Air Tractor produces more ag airplanes annually than all of our competitors put together.” Air Tractor is positioning itself for continued growth and reaching new milestones, adding more capabilities in manufacturing and product support reports Hirsch. The Customer Service Department recently completed a makeover and expansion, giving it a greatly increased capacity and an even deeper inventory of replacement parts. A newly enlarged

and remodeled parts shipping area promises Air Tractor customers faster, more streamlined, parts order response and fulfillment. Jeff Dobbs, Air Tractor’s Customer Service Manager, has spearheaded the changes. “It’s a new era, of sorts. We have expanded our parts warehouse area and streamlined our processes with a new layout that has really made our workflow more efficient. A lot of focus has been put on reducing our backorder log this year, and we’ve done that.” Dobbs says that the Air Tractor Parts Department has had to become more efficient each year as more and more new airplanes enter the field. “Our goal is to make sure that Air Tractor service—from our dealers to here at the factory—is something that our customers can always depend on,” says Dobbs. The new volume of parts has almost filled the expanded warehouse space, Dobbs reports. “We have really increased Air Tractor parts volume… like landing gear, fuselage panels, control surfaces and

wing leading edges.” As examples, he points to more than 20 control surface parts on the shelves and dozens of landing gear assemblies on pallets, ready to ship. “In addition to our own parts,” Dobbs adds, “We’ve expanded our inventory of common replacement parts, such as filters, hoses, disc brakes and tires.” “As we’ve grown and made changes,” said Dobbs, “we try to keep one idea in mind: Continual improvement. From our manufacturing efficiency and quality control of our products, to our dealer organization, and right to the customer in the field. Offer a better product and better product support. That’s what our customers have come to expect from Air Tractor.” President Jim Hirsch views these milestones and changes with the perspective of one with more than 20 years at Air Tractor. “People who know something about the culture here,” Hirsch says, “know that we are not a company that’s comfortable resting on its laurels. We are driven to be the best and we are very much looking forward to 2014.”

Even the best gets better. Continuous improvement—that wasn’t just a catchphrase to our founder. It was what drove him over five decades to create the most versatile and popular line of agricultural aircraft in the world. Look for Leland Snow’s legacy in the performance, the productivity, and the many pilot safety features of every Air Tractor flying.

You can’t miss it.

ASC Rotary Atomizers increase market share in Mexico...

by Graham Parker I first demonstrated the benefits of ASC Rotary Atomizers to a group of Mexican operators in June 2005, where there was a problem achieving control of a virus in potatoes. The virus was spread by a fly, and getting control with conventional nozzles was proving difficult. It was soon proved that by using rotary atomizers much better coverage could be achieved. Since then there has been a steady increase of the number of operators in Mexico changing to rotary atomizers. More recently Benny Dueck, an operator in the Cuauhtemoc region of Mexico who is operating an Air Tractor 402B, enlisted the services of Alan McCracken to help him install and calibrate the system, thereby ensuring the best possible results were achieved. (A full report of the work and subsequent results are available from Alan; the report will also be published in AgAir Update)

Field results show it pays to take Control™ by Dennis Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas, dgardisser@wrkofar.com It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80 percent of the time nothing happens, 10 percent of the time the result is worse, and 10 percent of the time there is a definite improvement. Laboratory results may be better, but actual field experience has been pretty close to this. For years, Arkansas S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of drift potential. These evaluations have included a variety of different equipment setups and operating variables and typically include the favored drift reduction additives for the area. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, there have been a few products that consistently show a positive response. Control™ from GarrCo Products, Inc., has been one of the products that has consistently shown a reduction in drift potential. A replicated field study was initiated recently to look at 19 different drift control additives and water using two aircraft. The aircraft were selected to give two separate speed scenarios, at 115 and 150 mph. This study appears on Garrco.com. I encourage you to obtain a copy of that report and see how your favorite product performed. Control™ was one of the top performing products in this study. The key to consistency can also hinge back to how well products perform under real field situations. Arkansas had many operators utilizing Control™ as a drift control additive. Some of the comments I hear are:

“Best material I’ve ever used.” “Very easy to mix and load.” “The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone.” “Where can I get some Control™?” When one starts hearing these types of comments, there may be more to the performance than just good lab results. I was visiting a couple of different operators during the season and overheard conversations where they were either going to borrow some Control™ from someone else’s pallet until their shipment came in or another operator was coming to borrow some from there. This alone may tell the true story on performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. John Garr, Jeff Tidwell and I met on a very cold morning recently at Tidwell Flying Service in Lonoke, Ark.; to try several different tank mixes. John has some new products under development and the mix results on those are another story, but we tried every way we could think of to cause mix problems with Control™ without success. Control™ mixed very easily under all scenarios, even with almost ice-cold water! I have had any number of operators ask me which drift control products are best. I’m not so sure there is a best product. Remember there are many application variables. I would recommend that operators select a product that consistently shows positive results. Also, additives alone are not the complete answer, although properly utilized, they may provide an extra margin of safety. Operators should use every tool possible to avoid drift, and proper equipment setup and operation will always play a dominant role.

Control™ Boosts Fungicide Performance, Ups Yield Deposition Aid/Drift Retardant

In an aerial, low-volume, fungicide application study: • Adding Control™ to a branded, commercial fungicide increased yield of corn by 10 bu/A over fungicide alone. • If corn is $7.00/bu, that’s an extra $70 per acre on a very small investment. • Contact us for more information on the study and a free sample.

Mixmate prepares for official product launch Mixmate, the innovative mobile blending system designed by Agtelligent to increase the accuracy and efficiency of chemical application in the field, will be officially released to the general public for purchase prior to the 2014 growing season. The company has spent the past year undergoing extensive testing and fine-tuning in preparation for the product’s imminent release. Enhancements include a new, all-stainless steel frame design and robust controller that will support additional features planned for a future release. Mixmate’s Brent and Doug Applegate have also traveled to industry trade shows to demonstrate how Mixmate can positively affect precision farming operations, inviting attendees to ‘test drive’ the online app to gauge the benefits of a Mixmate system. Mixmate generates a record of the exact amounts of every product used in a batch with superior accuracy,

Pre

providing the information necessary for automated record keeping. The mix location, time and current conditions are also recorded. The system sends this data wirelessly to a mobile network, allowing multiple users including landowners or crop advisors to connect with and manage their operations from anywhere. The same data is available through an internet browser or on connected mobile devices for tracking assets and progress in the field, allowing application to be maintained or improved over time to achieve optimal results. Bulk ingredients connected to the Mixmate system are automatically measured and dispensed, while motorized ball valves and pumps are computercontrolled to precisely measure each individual chemical. Batches are customized for every field and can be calculated based on the area, volume or weight of chemical ingredients at each location. With field

Portable

Mixmate’s portable design allows for increased safety in the field by excluding any need to transport ‘hot’ mixes. The system comes with a built-in jug rinser for effective cleaning as well as a safety latch to ensure the tank remains closed during cleaning or automated filling, eliminating the need for messy measuring pitchers. Mixmate is also easy to calibrate and a built-in tilt sensor automatically corrects the weight on sloped terrain. AgriSmart Information System

Product preview from AgriSmart Information Systems LLC

Flight Plan Online brings together some of the best technologies to give you a better way to communicate with your customers and manage your business so you can focus on spraying more acres. You and your pilots will be able to spend more productive time in the air and less time doing paperwork. Your customers will appreciate the professional and accurate mapping that Flight Plan Online provides as well as its ease of use. They will welcome the ability to track the progress of their job orders with no phone calls. The most powerful component of Flight Plan Online is the ability to process job orders using a centralized online system. This allows you or your customers to submit accurate jobs orders with geo referenced field maps. As job orders come in you can review them for accuracy and formally accept the work. Job orders can also include sensitive area alerts, field worker alerts, and adjacent crop identification to let you assess the level of risk. You can see all outstanding jobs on a map screen to filter those jobs into the most efficient batches for spraying. You can easily schedule job batches with common products and geographic proximity. Flight Plan Online generates all the information needed by the pilot, including loading sheets, individual job maps, and master maps that give an overview of all field locations. You can easily upload shape files to your guidance system to make the most of the guidance technology that is already in your plane. After spraying you can record actual application information and if desired, download the data from your guidance system to include as-sprayed imagery. You can then generate invoices from the job details already captured in the process, even on the same day you spray! Flight Plan Online also acts as your electronic system of record keeping, allowing you to generate a formal

application report any time to document regulatory compliance. Flight Plan Online communicates wirelessly with the newer guidance systems. Our customers tell us that Flight Plan Online makes their lives better, takes stress out of the cockpit, makes them more efficient internally and brings better communication to their customers.

Bottom line, Flight Plan Online will help you earn more revenue and maximize your profits by making the most efficient use of your resources. Kimmel Aviation Ins. Kimmel Aviation Insurance arose from a need to write hard to find and much needed insurance on cropdusters in 1972. The insurance side of the business started very pragmatically as customers were coming to the Kimmel Aviation Ag Aircraft dealership to trade in their $500 converted Super Cubs and Stearmans for the more productive and shiny new Cessna Ag Wagons and Ag Trucks. The $20,000 price tag and the ever evolving regulatory environment in the early 1970s mandated that all certified applicators must carry a minimum liability insurance policy or a bond of $10,000. Cessna Finance also wanted to make sure their loans were protected.

Booth

Very few companies would insure ag aircraft back in the early 1970s so Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find that coverage for their customers. From its humble beginnings, the insurance part of the business grew and formally incorporated Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1979. Over the years, Dorothy Kimmel has received numerous industry awards including, but not limited to MAAA Outstanding Service Award – 1975, MAAA President’s Award – 1985, WMAAA President, 15 years WMAAA Director to the WNAAA, WNAAA Vice Pres. 1991, WNAAA President 1992, Lee Abide Award – 1998, Arkansas (AAAA) Distinguished service award 2006, MAAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award – 2006. In addition, Dorothy also served on numerous committees and served both the NAAA and MAAA for each of her 45+ years as a member of both organizations. Her most outstanding achievement was to raise a family of four boys, all who entered the ag aviation field and chose career paths closely related to ag aviation. Although Dorothy is still active in the agency, her youngest son, Frank Kimmel, took over the day to day operations of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency in 2004. Frank brings with him 14,000 hours of flying experience including 8000+ as an ag pilot. Frank also has his own pedigree of accomplishments including , 1992 John Horne Memorial Safety award (NAAA), Novartis Leadership training delegate – 1998, NAAA Related — Kenny & Michael Christmas, Christmas Flying Service, SHELBY, MISSISSIPPI Service Award – 2008, Arkansas (AAAA) Outstanding Service Award 2008, and the MAAA Allied Industry Associate of the year 2010. In addition to the ag association awards, Frank was elected by his aviation insurance peers to serve on the Aviation Insurance Association (AIA) Board of Directors in 2005. He served as the Director of the Domestic Agents and Brokers Division until he was elected Vice President of the AIA in 2009 and then AIA President for 2011 – 2012. As you can see, it is true when their ads say, “When you need a respected voice to work for you, “The Kimmel’s Have You Covered”!”

Tulsa Aircraft Engines is expanding to keep up with the supply and demand! by Rex Vaughan Over the years, Tulsa Aircraft Engines has purchased core engines to keep up with supply and demand. This spring, we had the opportunity to purchase a huge inventory from Duff Aircraft. This inventory purchase consisted of R-985, R-1340, R-1340 geared nose engines; R-985 new parts; fuel pumps, 80 new 1416 starters, still in cans; and 260 new R-985 cylinders overhauled by the Military, still in cans.

We purchased and relocated the inventory to Tulsa and had to rent several different storage buildings until we could build our own. Currently, we have added a 1250 sq ft building to the east and an 8000 sq ft building to the north to accommodate the inventory. We are excited, and want to let all of our current and potential customers know that we have lots of new parts and low time engines available for purchase. In addition, Tulsa Aircraft

Engines added the Super 600 engine to our overhaul capability list. Tulsa Aircraft Engines has had a high volume of new customers this year, and we thank you for placing your trust in us. We will continue to be dedicated to our radial engines, and we want to thank all our customers for choosing Tulsa Aircraft Engines to be your overhaul shop of choice.

Aero-Engines, Inc. was founded in 1955 to service the needs of operators using Continental W-670 and Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 engines. The company was founded by eight experienced mechanics and continues 58 years later to have the most experienced and dependable crew in the business. The current partnership ranges from a minimum of 30 years to 40 years of experience with the company. Centrally located in Los Angeles since its inception, our shop continues to be the leader in providing quality and dependable overhauls of Continental W-670 and Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 engines. We have the most complete facilities in the country with an engine shop equipped to do our own inspections such as magnetic particle (Magnaflux) dye penetrant (Zyglo), ultrasonic and dimensional. Our cylinder shop’s strict standards include fully “metallized” cylinders, 100% guide replacement, new or serviceable pistons and a choice of “steel” or “nu-chrome” barrels. Our accessory shop overhauls our magnetos, carburetors, starters and generators using the finest parts and equipment. Our machine shop is the best equipped of its kind, with cam and cylinder grinder, balancing machines and much, much more. The parts department has an extensive supply of parts, enough engines to support our extensive exchange program. Aero-Engines, Inc has provided service to a large number of ag operators over the years, but has also overhauled engines for commercial and private aircraft such as the de Havilland Beavers and Otters, Stearmans, Staggerwing Beachcraft, etc. Many of our engines have been on the winning aircraft at the Reno Air Races in the AT-6 category. Last year’s winner was Dennis Buehn.

Super 600 Aero-Engines is the home of the Super 600, officially known as the Vintage Radials’ altered Pratt & Whitney R-1340. The engine incorporates a modified version of Pratt & Whitney R-2800 cylinders, thus increasing reliability and performance of the engine. The increased cooling fin capacity, higher rated manifold pressure, larger valves, forged heads, higher horsepower rating and increased compression ratio of the R-2800 cylinders is quite an improvement over the original R-1340 cylinders. The Super 600 engine, approved under STC SE01200LA, is rated at the same horsepower as the stock R-1340, but operators of the 25 engines in existence believe there are some “hidden horses” that can provide a boost when needed. Presently these engines are being used on Air Tractor, Ag-Cat and Thrush aircraft. We serve you with pleasure; confident we can supply you with the quality engine to suit your needs. Valley Air Crafts rolls out new parts ordering system After three decades serving Central Valley ag operators—ten as a factory-authorized Air Tractor dealer and service center—Valley Air Crafts of Tulare, California, has earned its reputation as the go-to resource for aerial applicators throughout California’s verdant Central Valley. “Ag operators here in the Valley know us and rely on us,” says owner Mike Schoenau. To be even more responsive to customers, a new feature on the Valley Air Crafts website, www. thevalleyaircrafts.com, now offers ag operators a convenient way to order parts with an email request. “We hope our customers will try this new way to order

parts,” Schoenau says. “It assures that their message gets to us. Of course they can still call us, too.” Valley Air Crafts sells and services the full line of Air Tractor aircraft from facilities at Mefford Field Airport, just outside Tulare. Tulare is about an hour’s drive between Fresno and Bakersfield in the southern Central Valley. In addition to selling and supporting Air Tractor agricultural and firefighting aircraft, Valley Air Crafts offers maintenance, repairs, and replacement parts for other brands of agricultural spray aircraft, as well as commercial and private aircraft and

Robinson helicopters. At the company’s 8000-square-foot hanger/ maintenance and parts facility, five maintenance technicians and two parts specialists provide the responsive service and support that Valley Air’s customers count on to keep flying and working. “At Valley Air,” said company president Mike Schoenau, “our customers have come to expect a high level of working knowledge, expertise, and professionalism. And whether they need service, parts, or another Air Tractor, we are going to make sure they get it.”

ZEE Systems introduces its new Z33-8900 Motor Compressor and Z33-89600 Motor Compressor Condenser assemblies with brushless DC variable speed drive motor and direct drive scroll compressor. This system is built for easy maintenance and efficient operation. The motor is more efficient with built in soft start and the scroll compressor means a lower starting and running current. No brushes to change. No pulleys and belts to adjust. With the optional controller the motor speed can be adjusted for desired cooling at the lowest possible current. The Z33-8900 Motor Compressor will be used in all future designs. The SZ43, SZ58 and Z99 drive motors will be phased out with continued parts support planned for several years. The Z33-8900 is designed to easily retrofit current motor compressor designs.

BASF

Booth

Flying ahead of the demand curve By Gary Fellows, Technical Market Manager, BASF When women are asked which traits they look for in a husband, “a good listener” inevitably finds its way to the top of the list. Fortunately for the romantic prospects of most aerial applicators, that one is already covered. Or at least it should be – because good aerial applicators have plenty of practice in this area. Every day, you must listen to the demands of your customers and deliver if you want to stay in business. But, like in any relationship, listening is only the first step. If you want relationships with your customers to flourish – and, in turn, your business – you’ll have to anticipate your customers’ demands and provide them with solutions before they even know they have a problem. It worked for Joel Meyer. Meyer’s Wellsburg, Iowa-based aerial application operation, Meyer Agri-Air, has been in business for 20 years. Much of that has been spent as a one- or two-plane shop, but the operation recently went through a growth spurt. How? By getting ahead of the demand curve. “The past few years have brought growers more competition, more costs, more pressure for higher yields and more extreme weather than any time I can remember,” Meyer said. “And because of that, growers have prioritized Plant Health and demand it more than ever before.” Instead of waiting for his customers to come to him for help with diseases threatening their fields, Meyer managed to solve their issues early on with Headline AMP® fungicide from BASF. “When we first implemented Headline AMP fungicide, we often took before and after photos of treatments to see how accurate and effective they were,” Meyer said. “After the treatments, you could tell with just

54E

agairupdate.com

a quick glance which crops were treated and which weren’t. We even had a neighboring farmer who wondered why his crops, only a few feet away, were not as green or healthy-looking.” Neighboring growers weren’t the only ones who noticed. The kind of results Meyer achieved with Headline AMP fungicide drew the attention of other growers and created a cycle of demand that ultimately led to a huge expansion for his business. “Growers in the area saw the results and asked us to do the same thing to their fields. It worked, and the next year the same thing happened. The demand for us grew, so we needed to increase our supply by adding planes and pilots,” Meyer said. “Now most growers can’t afford not to spray, and our business is reaping the benefits.” But this cycle doesn’t start by itself; it often needs to be catalyzed by the applicator. And sometimes that means more than anticipating the customer’s demands – it means creating them. While growers are usually on the lookout for ways to improve their operation, applicators shouldn’t take this for granted. After all, growers are busy people, their days filled with tasks from sunup to sundown, and they may not see every possible opportunity to improve. It’s your job to find these opportunities and provide solutions that make their fields better, even if they don’t see the need for it right away. To do this, applicators need to become salesmen. They need to plant a seed in growers’ minds, to prove to them that they need this product or service, even if they haven’t used it, thought about it or perhaps heard about it before – which is no small task, especially today. “Farmers are doing a much better job of being

businessmen now,” said Dennie Stokes, owner of the Parkin, Arkansas-based Stokes Flying Service. “They have a better eye for their expenses and try to minimize them at every turn.” Stokes’ company has been in business since 1981, succeeding even when growers were trying to cut costs. Part of the reason he’s been successful is by convincing growers that his operation, and the products they offer, are not expenses at all – they’re investments. “When some growers hear fungicide, they worry about the $25 or $30 per acre it will cost them and ignore the additional 10 bushels per acre we’ve seen it yield,” Stokes said. “That’s quite a hefty return, especially when spread across the majority of their acres. And we have to show them that.” All gains come with a price, and yield increases are no different. But it’s an investment that needs to be made. With fierce competition, rising input costs and everunpredictable weather, the margin for error is low in agriculture. So if growers aren’t doing something to constantly protect yields, they aren’t likely to succeed. “As my grandpa used to say, ‘You can save yourself broke if you’re not careful,’” Stokes said. “Applicators can’t save farmers enough money to make them prosperous, but with the right timing, equipment and products, we can help them make a lot of money.” Always read and follow label directions. 21st Annual NAAA Convention Show Guide

Getting down to bid-ness: things are heating up for NAAA’s 2013 auction As NAAA’s 47th Annual Convention & Exposition nears, several Allied Industry members have stepped forward with generous donations to NAAA’s Live Auction. The always entertaining Live Auction continues to be one of the Association’s most popular and successful fundraisers, but NAAA could not accomplish this without the support of our many friends and allies. Last year NAAA raised nearly $370,000 at the Live Auction and close to $12,000 at the Silent Auction, the second-highest auction total ever, second only to the $460,000 in auction proceeds raised in 2010. Nearly $200,000 of that 2012 amount came from Al and Mike Schiffer of Al’s Aerial Spraying in Ovid, MI, and Jon Pew of Sarita Aerial Contractors in Coolidge, AZ, who were the top bidders for P&WC’s certificates of credit for OEM parts and maintenance services for a large and small PT6A AG engine, respectively. P&WC is upping the ante even further for the 2013 Live Auction. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the PT6 engine, by contributing a brand new PT6A-34AG engine. Such an impressive gift is not unprecedented for P&WC. “As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, it was important to us to make this contribution to NAAA’s Live Auction,” P&WC Vice President of General Aviation Denis Parisien said. “We hope this year’s pledge of a PT6A-34AG engine will contribute to establishing a new bidding record!” “P&WC’s commitment to the ag industry and NAAA’s initiatives has enabled us to raise record dollar amounts, which provide income for NAAA projects and programs,” NAAA Executive Director Andrew Moore said. “We can’t thank them enough for their support.” NAAA is very appreciative of the generosity shown by P&WC and numerous likeminded Allied Industry companies, its state associations and aerial applicator backers. Their contributions and auction purchases support the aerial application industry’s long-term livelihood by providing funding for association projects and programs. NAAA is still in need of auction items to make this year’s auction its most successful one yet! To donate an auction item, fill out a form online at www.agaviation. org/content/live-and-silent-auctions or email your donation information to information@agaviation. org. Big-ticket items are usually reserved for the Live Auction, with smaller items allocated for the Silent Auction, but final determinations are made on site once all the offerings have been inventoried.

Pratt & Whitney Canada P&WC’s Ag Advisory Board

Booth

Seeking new ways to enhance the customer experience Pratt & Whitney Canada’s (P&WC) storied PT6 engines currently power thousands of aircraft used for agricultural purposes in the United States and abroad. For many years, P&WC has been designing and manufacturing aircraft engines specifically for the ag market, acting on the input of both operators and OEMs to create engines that meet the exacting standards required of aerial applicators. “From the beginning we viewed the ag market as having its own distinctive dynamic within the General Aviation industry,” said Denis Parisien, Vice President, General Aviation. “We have long maintained an ongoing dialogue with its industry players and have been active participants at events such as the NAAA’s annual convention in order to tap in to the latest trends in the industry. Some of our most popular ag engines – such as the PT6A34AG and PT6A-67AG – stem from the excellent relationships we have built within this sector.” Parisien said the company decided in 2011 to launch a new initiative tailored for the ag industry by creating an internal Ag Advisory Board. Members of the advisory board are drawn from virtually every department within P&WC – Engineering, Marketing, Customer Service, Leaseco, Communications, Field Operations, etc. “The primary purpose of the advisory board is to enrich the customer experience for the ag industry,” said Parisien. “Obviously, delivering dependable engines that meet operator needs is the team’s modus operandi. To achieve that, board members take a highly customer-centric approach with the goal of creating solutions that simplify customers’ business operations.” Operator benefits achieved through the work of the Ag Advisory Board have involved process improvements dealing with engine accessories (also known as

62E

agairupdate.com

Line Replaceable Units). “We wanted to introduce changes that made it faster and more convenient for customers dealing with accessories replacement,” said Yves Houde, Service Engineering, PT6, Customer Service, P&WC. “For example, we opened the exchange pool for overhauled components to the ag market, meaning they now have greater options when replacing accessories,” added Houde.

Knowing that most ag operations are small businesses for whom the bottom line is always a critical focus, P&WC introduced a program to keep upfront costs to a minimum for operators dealing with replacement accessories. Operators with an engine under first-run warranty can now receive accessory replacements at no initial charge. P&WC then examines the replaced accessory and only bills for the replacement if it is deemed not covered under warranty, thus ensuring that the operator conserves precious cash. “We also maintain significant inventories for ag engines parts and accessories within our Parts Distribution Centres,” said Houde. “We target to

provide 12-hour parts delivery anywhere in North America which helps ensure minimal downtime for operators.” To assist in achieving this target, P&WC positioned material at a forward stocking location in Memphis, Tennessee, to extend the company’s carrier pick-up time by an additional six hours (from 6:00pm EST to 12:00am EST). The Ag Advisory Board has made progress in a number of other areas as well such as by reducing paperwork for operators. “Operators told us that our engine rental contracts, for example, were too complicated,” Parisien said. “So we did a complete overhaul of the contract format to make it shorter and simpler.” As Parisien noted, P&WC has been an active and enthusiastic participant at the NAAA annual convention for many years. The company has donated engines in the past to support the excellent work of the Association and has also been a strong supporter of PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) which provides continuing education to NAAA members on safety, security and drift mitigation. Two P&WC events are planned at this year’s NAAA convention -- the day-long PT6 engine seminar and the company’s evening reception. They have both long been popular with the NAAA community. This year, the seminar will be held on Sunday, December 8 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm and the reception will be held at 7:30 pm, Tuesday, December 10.

P&WC Launches Mobile App This summer, P&WC introduced an app designed to give its 10,000 operators around the world instant access to a host of services from all makes and models of wireless handheld, tablet and laptop devices. The app uses geographic positioning technology to identify the location of the user. It then provides contact information for the closest Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility in P&WC’s global Service Centre Network of both owned and designated facilities. The app gives direct telephone access to P&WC’s Customer First Centre (CFirst), which offers 24-7 service, providing operators with real-time personalized assistance. The app is available at http://app.pwc.ca.

What makes a LEGEND? It starts with an idea, it grows with the PURPOSE to delight CUSTOMERS, and it’s born from VICTORY. But the only legends that are truly worth celebrating are those that carry on long after the first victory lap, where VISION, purpose and success are ongoing. This is the legend of the PT6 engine, and now it’s time for us to CELEBRATE 50 inspiring years of turboprop INNOVATION. Visit us at NAAA 2013 Booth #910

growers time. In order to see high yield results, growers must take an active role in pest management. The use of aerial applied products often saves growers time. This can be critical during planting and throughout the growing season when pests or disease threaten a crop. Agricultural aviation and FMC have the same goal – to encourage best management practices. An important player in the overall agriculture industry, aerial application is a critical component of high-yield agriculture. The focus for the grower must be to produce maximum yield. By utilizing aerial applications, growers can be more efficient and effective with their time and resources. This type of best management practice is encouraged by FMC. GE Aviation’s H80 Engine family extends its reach

GE Aviation’s H80 engine family continues its growth with more certifications, more deliveries and more applications. The H80 engine received certification from nine aviation authorities in Europe, the US, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Uruguay and Russia. Certification for South Africa is underway. GE plans to continue pursuing additional certification based on where the customers will operate the engine. In September, Beidahuang General Aviation Company received six of the 20 H80-powered Thrush 510G aircraft on order. The order from Beidahuang General Aviation Company, a subsidiary of the State-Owned-Enterprise Beidahuang Group in China, was the largest single order of Thrush Aircraft ever received. GE Aviation has taken steps to ensure the H80 engines have a smooth entry into service for customers like Beidahuang. Line maintenance classes are offered to help

66E

customers learn how to keep their engines in top operating condition. GE Aviation has also developed an extensive network of service and support centers around the world, including in China. In July, GE Aviation signed an agreement with China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co., Ltd. (CAIGA) to be the first Authorized Service Center for the H80 engine in China and perform line maintenance inspections and routine engine maintenance. The H80 turboprop engine family incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuelefficient, durable engine with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The engines feature a service life of 3,600 flighthours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls. The H80 engine family also offers a standard auto start and limiting unit to simplify engine start-up as well as a choice of propeller governors to allow customers flexibility in propeller selection. The engine family consists of the H75, H80 and H85 engines, which will be aimed at the agricultural, commuter, utility a n d

business turboprop aircraft segments. The H75 engine will be rated at 750 shaft horsepower (shp) for takeoff and maximum continuous operation, and the H85 will be rated at 850 shp. Beyond the Thrush 510G, the H80 engine powers Aircraft Industries’ L410 that entered service this year and Technoavia’s all-new Rysachok twin engine aircraft. Last year, CAIGA selected GE Aviation’s H85 turboprop engine to power its Primus 150 aircraft, a five-seat, light single-engine pressurized turboprop business aircraft with a carbon fiber composite airframe. Flight testing of the H85powered Primus 150 is scheduled for this year. This spring, AIR-TEC signed an agreement to develop an engine upgrade program for the L 410 aircraft using the H75 engine. “The H80 engine family has garnered strong interest around the general aviation industry,” said Jim Stoker, president and managing executive of GE Aviation’s Business and General Aviation Turboprops. “We are excited to expand the engine’s reach and increase our customer base around the world.” GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. GE Aviation has a global service network to support these offerings. Pickett Equipment

Booth

Pickett doesn’t believe in “good enough” It would be easy to sell the same products every other loading equipment provider sells. The same pumps with the same underpowered gas engines. It would be very easy. But there’s a simple reason we don’t take the easy route: you, the aerial applicator. We’ve been exhibiting at state aerial applicator conventions for over 40 years and the national for over 20. We could do as the other loading equipment providers do: not show up and just mail a catalog. That would be the easy thing to do. But we won’t do that for one simple reason: we feel that’s disrespectful to you. We exhibit at the conventions because we like talking with aerial applicators. We’re pilots, too. We enjoy meeting new people and chatting with old friends. But we don’t attend the conventions merely to socialize. We come to learn.

We’ve spent each convention learning something new. Something different. Something we can do to better serve you. That’s why we worked with Flomax to develop the Model No. 29944. It’s the best pump available in terms of GPM, longevity and serviceability. You won’t find a better pump. We’ve looked. Other vendors may not tell you there’s a better option; something faster. We feel it’s a disservice not to tell you. We want you to be happy with whatever it is you purchase from us. We want it to work season after season. It means fewer orders for us, but happier customers. Above all, we want you loading as quickly as possible, because every minute loading is one not spraying. We realize you only have so many days to spray. Fill those days with as many loads as possible. That’s what we’re all about.

Take the 29944 Flomax pump pictured below. It’s faster than any other 3” pump out there. It will give you up to 390 gallons a minute. You’ll fill your hopper in under three minutes. Every, time. Only the Flomax 29944 has the high-speed, allstainless five vane impeller shown below. Yes, we could sell a 3” pump hooked up to a Chinese gasoline engine. It would make things easier on our end. But it is inferior to a Flomax 29944 with a Honda or electric motor. We don’t want you having to key the starter more than once. We don’t want you waiting on your pump, burning money as you windmill. We don’t believe in “good enough.” We at Pickett thank you for your continued support over the years. We look forward to seeing you in Reno!

Transland acquires CP Products Transland and CP Products are pleased to announce that two of the most respected companies in the industry are teaming together to become an even stronger presence in the aerial application market. Effective September 1st, CP Products became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Transland. James Frank, owner of Transland, said, “CP Products has been a successful and innovative part of the aerial and ground application industry for the past 22 years. It is our intent and responsibility to build on the product development heritage that they have left for us. The CP nozzles are a critical product line that we are excited to be able to offer our customers. We are fortunate that Carolyn felt that we were a great fit to continue the legacy that she, her father and Chris have established in the industry. It is not just the great products that have set CP Products apart, but its people. We are truly excited about adding these talented people to our team.” According to Carolyn Baecker, “When the decision was made to seek a buyer for CP Products Company, the primary concern was finding an industryrespected firm which would continue producing innovative products for both aerial and ground

spraying. Transland is the perfect fit. Transland’s familiarity with and commitment to the aerial application industry is just as strong as CP’s has been. The CP brand is in good hands.”

CP Products has been a successful and innovative part of the aerial application industry for the past 22 years. Transland General Manager Roberto Rodriguez said, “We are constantly looking for different ways to improve and diversify our product line. The acquisition of CP Products will strengthen our position as the leader in the manufacture of dispersal systems and allow us to provide another aspect of dispersal equipment to our customers.” Anthonie York, who will be temporarily locating to Tempe, Arizona to assist in the transition of CP Products put it this way: “In an effort to focus on

serving our customers and our industry to the best of our ability, it makes perfect sense to have Transland and CP Products team up. From my time at fly-ins, conventions, NAAA board meetings and becoming a SAFE analyst, my path has crossed Carolyn’s many times. That is because we have the same focus and goal, and that is to better serve the customer and industry. Carolyn and her team have done a great job over the past 22 years. We are excited, humbled and grateful to serve and look forward to the opportunity before us.” It is our intention to continue to use the exact same distributor base that has helped each company serve the industry and be successful. Our goal is to add value to the industry in general and our distributors in particular. Likewise, we will always gravitate to the distributors that work to add value to us and to the industry. TracMap

Booth

TracMap progress continues – interview with North American sales manager Mark Hornback Question: You came into this role 12 months ago knowing nothing about the ag aviation industry. How have you found it?

been with the company they have added lots of improvements that I have asked for as a result of talking to pilots.

Mark: It’s been a big learning curve, but people have been great. That’s the thing about aerial applicators. They don’t mind if you don’t know much to start with, as long as your attitude is right, and are prepared to learn.

And as far as customers go, you wouldn’t know it wasn’t a North American based business. We have a major distribution base just out of Atlanta, GA, so apart from special items, we can ship overnight to most places in the country.

Question: So you have learned a lot?

Question: We know about their GPS system for ag aviation. What else does TracMap do?

Mark: Heaps. In some ways it is a simple business, but the knowledge and skill required is immense. But the biggest thing I have learned is how good the people are to deal with. It’s an industry where a lot of business is still based on a handshake. Question: So you are enjoying it then? Mark: Absolutely. At the end of the day, it’s a people and relationship business, and I like dealing with people. It’s a great feeling to talk to someone, find out what they want, provide it, and then get a phone call out of the blue a couple of months later from them saying how happy they are. Also it’s great to know that all our customers are so willing to talk to other potential customers about how much they love their TracMap systems. Question: TracMap is based out of New Zealand. Has that caused any issues for you? Mark: Actually, it’s a plus. Those Kiwis’s seem to have a way of making things happen quicker and smarter than we do. Even in the time I have

Mark: They are very big in the ground industry in New Zealand. Most of the fertilizer and a lot of the spray that gets applied to New Zealand farms is with TracMap guidance, and now they are rapidly expanding into the viticulture industry in Australia, putting systems on grape harvesters and sprayers.

Mark in his favorite activity - meeting with customers, in this case Bart Alexander from Chem Air in LA Mark: It’s in final testing in New Zealand at the moment. We plan to launch it at the NAAA convention in early December. But a lightbar is a lightbar. It has guidance lights top and bottom, and 4 sets of numbers it can display. Question: What else is new?

Plus they are also used for lots of other things, like Mosquito control, Aerial Toxic Bait, Search and Rescue, and Fire. Question: Ok, so it’s a good company and has a good product. What’s coming that is new? Mark: The biggest thing is an external lightbar. This is something I have been asking for since just after I started. Because of TracMap’s origins in helicopters, they only had an internal lightbar, and that has been a real issue for some customers, and costing us sales. Question: So when are we going to see it, and how does it compare with the other lightbars out there?

Mark: TracLink, which is TracMap’s cloud based mapping system. Because TracMap have been doing cellular based map sending for seven years now, the system they have developed is just great. It’s simple and reliable, and makes sending maps from Flight Plan on Line and AgSync a real breeze. Question: So the future is looking good? Mark: Very much so. Last year was all a great learning experience. I am looking forward to getting around the various state conventions and catching up with the people I met for the first time last year. It’s a busy time, but well worth it.

New Tunica, Mississippi division now open Since 1972, Covington Aircraft has worked very hard maintaining their four core values of integrity, dependability, affordability and quality service. Quality service is one attribute that Covington is constantly monitoring and has always taken very serious. Aaron Abbott, Covington’s Executive Vice President, says “Just because we think we’re serving the customers’ needs doesn’t always make it true. We depend on our customers to tell us whether we’re making the grade or not. As we’ve traveled to the many ag shows, a repeated comment has surfaced over the last few years. ‘We wish you were more accessible and closer to us along the Mississippi River Delta.’” Covington’s new Tunica, Mississippi location is

an answer to those customer requests. Covington’s desire is to provide the same quality service customers have grown accustomed to having at the Covington Oklahoma location. Located just minutes from Memphis, their new state of the art facility will fulfill what their “Delta” customers are looking for, dependable, quality service close to home. Just out of Class B airspace on the new Tunica airport, Covington will be centrally located in the Mississippi Delta and able to provide expedited service to ag and corporate customers in the region. “Our intentions in Tunica are to support our customers with rental power sections, engines and props,” says Luke Abbott, Covington Aircraft Engines President and Operations Manager of the Tunica location. “Whether a job requires the use of our airborne Mobile Response Team, one of our Mobile Response Team trucks, or our Tunica fly-in facility, we will only be minutes away from supporting a customer that needs assistance. We also intend to inventory the accessories, parts and products that our customers may need. Whether you fly into our Tunica hangar or we come to yours, you will be able to depend on our Tunica crew and you can expect the same great service you have

received from Covington Aircraft over the past 40 years. Covington will be Covington whether we are answering the phone in the” Delta” or in Oklahoma. You will deal with the same people you are used to dealing with in Oklahoma. My family has relocated to the Tunica area and more Covington folks are on the way. We are serious about working and living here in the Delta, close to our customers.” The Tunica location will be capable of taking care of your needs whether it’s an older PT6A-20 or the new PT6A-67F or even a radial engine. David Hamilton, Covington’s Turbine Shop VP in Oklahoma, says: “This isn’t an R & I shop solely depending on our facility in Oklahoma to carry the mechanical and technical load. We intend for our Tunica team to be able to meet the needs of the operators in the area, with full intentions of putting down deep roots in support of our customer’s business.” With Covington’s extensive rental pool, Pratt & Whitney Canada warranty support, and new or overhauled parts and engines; Covington is proud to be a part of what’s going on in the Mississippi Delta. SATLOC — AgJunction

The new L7 lightbar and 7” screen Satloc released the new L7 Lightbar in 2013. Both the Satloc G4 and Satloc Bantam are now offering the L7 as a standard Lightbar. When the L7 is coupled with the G4, it features four LED displays with over 20 different options to view in each window. The high bright LEDs are the brightest LEDs that Satloc has ever used in a Lightbar. The L7 now offers an additional set of LEDs that can be used with a G4 for distance to a boundary edge, mark or waypoint. LiteStar IIs also include the L7 as the standard Lightbar, and all M3s can upgrade to the L7 Lightbar. Bantams, M3s and LiteStar IIs run in legacy mode with a 2-window display only. The L7 is completely waterpoof.

screen, but the new screen is designed by Satloc and modeled after the existing 9” G4 screen. Like the G4 screen, it has a high brightness feature for clear visibility in bright sunlight, and it allows low dimming for night flying.

creation of both liquid and dry-based prescription maps for variable rate applications. Existing Shape files can also be converted into Satloc prescription maps.

Connectivity with G4 and HQ

Every G4 is equipped with a Wi-Fi modem and router with amplifying antenna to allow logs and jobs to be synced with an office computer or tablet PC. The modem can be used to automatically move data from the aircraft to the office (or mobile device) without having to manually transfer through a USB stick.

The Satloc G4 includes a connectivity kit and a subscription to HQ, the AgJunction web-based program designed for the aerial application industry. HQ can be run on a tablet PC, office computer or mobile device. The connectivity kit allows an operation to move data quickly and save time. It includes both a Wi-Fi and a cell-based modem, a router with amplifier, a video camera and an audio modem to connect a headset through the G4.

HQ

New 7” Screen

HQ is a web-based program for viewing aircraft and field data over Google Earth or Bing Maps. With HQ, aircraft can be tracked in real-time, log files can be stored and reviewed, job files can be created and the G4 can be accessed through remote access. Weather data can be accessed through HQ and locations can be pinpointed through Lat/Lon searches or through entry of legal descriptions (Section/Township/ Range). Spray Data reports and As-Applied maps can be generated and emailed straight from HQ.

At the NAAA convention in Dec 2013, Satloc will release a custom 7” touch screen that can be used with the Bantam or G4. Its overall length and width dimensions are the same as the current 7” Bantam

The AgJunction Prescription Map generator is being implemented into the HQ program and will be available for the 2014 season. It allows for the

Wi-Fi Data Movement

Cell-based modem A cell-based modem can be used with the G4 in order to upload and download data in real-time. HQ can be used to send Job files on-the-fly to an aircraft or multiple aircraft. Job files are sent to specific G4s and stored in the cloud until downloading with a button push on the G4. Job files can be created and stored in HQ. Log files are associated with stored Job files for printing and emailing reports.

Remote Access A G4 can be accessed in real time from any remote computer through HQ. Through HQ, the G4 can be emulated on a remote computer screen (or mobile device) when the G4 is connected with a cell-based modem. This allows the pilot to pass access to another location so buttons can be activated remotely. This can be used for training and/or trouble-shooting.
